2024.05.19 12:53 m_nan Adding a "grid coordinates" token
So, our setup is: submitted by m_nan to AboveVTT [link] [comments] DM: desktop controlled via Ipad through Chrome Remote Desktop Players: Intel Compute Stick plugged in the back of a TV, miniatures on top We use various maps, but mostly stuff built with Dungeon Alchemist. At times, it becomes tricky to coordinate adding an effect on the map and place it correctly. So, I was thinking of adding two series of coordinates on the sides of the map. This way, anybody can go "I place a 2-square-radius effect on G-15" and I, as the DM, can place it directly from my screen and I don't have to crane my neck out of the DM screen while fiddling on the ipad and trying to wrap my brain around the fact that the screen is placed perpendicuarly to me so UP-DOWN movements on the Ipad are actually LEFT-RIGHT on the screen and vice versa. There are both numbers and letters tokens in AboveVTT, I can place them on the map and group them. I have infact done so already. Problem is, it's more than 50 objects to load, and sometimes - for reasons - I might even need to move them at which point AbVTT goes bananas for a while as it moves them one by one. So, I was wondering, is there a way to have the two lines as a single object (even in a roundabound way like making it the texture of a 1-square line effect that when stretched correctly marks the squares in the right way)? Can't seem to find a way to add big-ish assets, only 1x1 tokens, so here I am asking for advice. Maybe it's trivial and I'm just not looking in the right place. https://preview.redd.it/i0esi3we3d1d1.png?width=1917&format=png&auto=webp&s=9ce2107c48d20c9ffaf89a529e62376957e1cb2e |

2024.05.13 02:15 nomorelandfills No, You Beg - 2021 article from The Cut about the difficulty in adopting in the COVID era
Another copied article to keep in reserve. It's an odd article from the pandemic, recounting the boom in rescue adoptions. It is a fairly pointless article in that it uses some really shifty rescuers, including Pixies and Paws, as sources, brightly highlights a bioethicist who uses her own foolish adoption of two pit bull mixes as evidence that most people shouldn't own dogs, and chronicles but fails to understand the loathing rescuers have for adopters. It does, however, wonderfully illustrate how rapidly the good times ended in rescue. Anyone reading the the current "we've never been so overwhelmed with dogs" rescue laments should know that there's a link between today's problems and yesterday's reckless opportunism. submitted by nomorelandfills to PetRescueExposed [link] [comments] The "bioethicist" “I think it’s probably true that the majority of people who want to adopt a dog should not,” Jessica Pierce, a bioethicist who studies human-animal relationships, tells me. “They don’t have the wherewithal and don’t have what they need to give the animal a good life.” She herself ended up with two pets that didn’t get along at all — a herding mix and a pointer mix whose constant fighting made the idea of hosting a dinner party both perhaps “bloody” and definitely “scary and miserable.” She says shelters shouldn’t “drive away potentially loving and appropriate adopters because they don’t meet predetermined criteria,” but she also sees the importance of a thorough application process that prepares humans for the pitfalls of pet parenthood. “You need to be ready to have a dog who doesn’t like people very much,” says Pierce. When Bella, the 11-year-old she got from the Humane Society, dies, she’s not sure she will get a replacement, noting that the pandemic puppy boom is “driven by a reflection of human narcissism and neurosis.” However, this is a fantastic truth long overdue for the telling. “I started to talk to shelter leaders across the country,” Cushing says. “And one by one, they said any adoptable dog without a medical issue is gone by noon on Saturday. But the public didn’t know that. Only the dog seekers and the experts did.” https://preview.redd.it/v2owlquz230d1.png?width=1139&format=png&auto=webp&s=a95a7983b4f018f043125a0819a16941cec1e6aa Jack, adopted by Tori and Paris through In Our Hands Rescue. It was a rainy Sunday in June, and Danielle had fallen in love. The 23-year-old paralegal spent the first part of her afternoon in McCarren Park, envying the happy dog owners with their furry companions. Then she stumbled upon an adoption event in a North Brooklyn beer garden, where a beagle mix being paraded out of the rescue van reminded her of the dog she grew up with, Snickers. It all felt like fate, so she filled out an application on the spot. She was then joined by her best friend and roommate, Alexa, in sitting across from a serious-looking young woman with a ponytail who was searching for a reason to break her heart. Danielle and Alexa were confident they would be leaving with Millie that day: After all, they had a 1,000-square-foot apartment within blocks of McCarren and full-time employment with the ability to work from home for the foreseeable future. But the volunteer kept posing questions that they hadn’t prepared for. What if they stopped living together? What if Danielle’s girlfriend’s collie mix didn’t get along with her new family member? What would be the solution if the dog needed expensive training for behavioral issues? Which vet were they planning to use? All of which, upon reflection, were reasonable questions. But when it came to the diet they planned for the dog, they realized they were out of their depth. Danielle recalled that Snickers had lived to 16 and a half on a diet of Blue Buffalo Wilderness, the most expensive stuff that was available at her parents’ Bay Area pet store. “Would you want to live on the best version of Lean Cuisine for the rest of your life?” sniffed the volunteer with a frown. She would instead recommend a small-batch, raw-food brand that cost, when they looked it up later, up to $240 a bag. “If you were approved, you’d need to get the necessary supplies and take time off from work starting now,” the dog gatekeeper said. “And the first 120 days would be considered a trial period, meaning we would reserve the right to take your dog back at any time.” The would-be adopters nodded solemnly. The friends rose from the bench and thanked the volunteer for her time. Believing they were out of earshot, the volunteer summed up the interview to a colleague: “You just walked by, and you’re fixated on this one dog, and it’s because you had a beagle growing up, but you want to make your roommate the legal adopter?” When Danielle and Alexa were young, one could still show up at a shelter, pick out an unhoused dog that just wanted to have someone to love, and take it home that same day. Today, much of the process has moved online — to Petfinder, a.k.a. Tinder for dogs, and various animal-shelter Instagram accounts that send cute puppy pics with heartrending stories of need into your feed and compel you to fill out an adoption application as you sit on the toilet. Posts describing the dogs drip with euphemisms: A dog that might freak out and tear your house up if left alone is a “Velcro dog”; one that might knock down your children is “overly exuberant”; a skittish, neglected dog with trust issues is just a “shy party girl.” Certain shelters have become influencers in their own right, like the L.A.-based Labelle Foundation, which has almost 250,000 Instagram followers and counts Dua Lipa and Cara Delevingne among its A-list clients. Rescue agencies abound, many with missions so specific that you could theoretically find one that deals in any niche breed you desire, from affenpinschers to Yorkshire terriers. This deluge of rescue-puppy content has arrived, not coincidentally, during a time of growing awareness of puppy mills as so morally indefensible that even Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could draw fire for seemingly buying a purebred French bulldog in early 2020. Then came the pandemic puppy boom, a lonely, claustrophobic year in which thousands of white-collar workers, sitting at home scrolling through their phones, seemed simultaneously to decide they were finally ready to adopt a dog. The corresponding demand spike in certain markets has simply overwhelmed the agencies: New York shelters that were used to receiving 20 applications a week were now receiving hundreds, with as many as 50 people vying for a single pup. The rescue dog is now, indisputably, a luxury good, without a market pricing system at work to manage demand. A better analogy might be an Ivy League admissions office. But even Harvard isn’t forced to be as picky as, say, Korean K9 Rescue, whose average monthly applications tripled in 2020. And yet someone has to pick the winners — often an unpaid millennial Miss Hannigan doling out a precious number of wet-nosed Orphan Annies to wannabe Daddy Warbuckses and thus empowered to judge the intentions and poop-scooping abilities of otherwise accomplished urban professionals, some of whom actually did go to Harvard. This has led to some hard feelings. Every once in a while, someone will complain on Twitter about being rejected by a rescue agency, and it will reliably set off a cascade of attacks on “entitled rich white millennials assuming they can have whatever they want,” followed by counter-attacks on those who “appoint themselves the holy sainted guardian of all animals.” Danielle was ultimately deemed unworthy, not even receiving a generic rejection letter over email. After all, there isn’t really that much incentive for the rescue agencies to be polite these days. The modern animal-rescue movement grew alongside the child-welfare movement in the mid-19th century. It got another boost in the years following World War II, when Americans were moving out to the suburbs in droves, according to Stephen Zawistowski, a professor of animal behavior at Hunter College. Suddenly, there were highways, yards, and space. Walt Disney was making movies about children and dogs that promoted the idea that no new home was complete without a loyal animal companion. (Zawistowski said that one might call this the Old Yeller Effect, but there were various riffs on the same theme over the ensuing decades. Essentially, Flipper was “Let’s put Lassie in the water.”) In the early ’80s, University of Pennsylvania researchers confirmed the effects that animal companionship has on everything from blood pressure to heart conditions to anxiety. Pets were no longer just how you taught Junior to be responsible; they might be critical to maintaining adults’ physical and mental health. The way people spoke about animals started changing. The idea that “homeless” dogs were sent to the “pound” because they were “bad” went out of fashion. “Suddenly, you had ‘rescue’ dogs brightly lit in the mall,” says Ed Sayres, a former president of the ASPCA who now works as a pet-industry consultant. “Basically, we gave animals a promotion.” Meanwhile, in the late ’80s, spay and neuter procedures had been streamlined and were being recommended by vets as well as by Bob Barker on The Price Is Right. Then came The Ad. Released in 2007, it featured close-ups of three-legged dogs and one-eyed cats rescued by the ASPCA over a wrenching rendition of Sarah McLachlan’s “Angel.” The commercial warned that “for hundreds of others, help came too late.” In just a year, the ad raised 60 percent of the ASPCA’s annual $50 million budget. The organization was reportedly able to increase the grant money it gave to other animal-welfare organizations by 900 percent in ten years. It is difficult to overstate the emotional hangover The Ad inflicted on millennials and members of Gen Z. Janet M. Davis is a historian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she lectures on animal rights to a demographically diverse body of students — everyone from cattle ranchers to vegan punks — most of whom cry when she shows The Ad in class. “It absolutely brings down the house,” she says. “Every time.” Theoretically, the point of dog adoption is that there are more dogs born into the world than there are humans lined up to care for them. But as interest grew, the supply problem became less acute. Thanks to widespread spay and neuter policies, there are simply too few unwanted litters for what the adoption market wants. National chains like PetSmart partnered with local shelters to supply its animals for sale. Savvy rescues in dog deserts like New York hooked up with shelters in the Deep South, where cultural attitudes toward spaying and neutering pets are much more lax. While there is no official registry of how many shelter dogs are available in the U.S., in 2017, researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine for Mississippi State University published a study reporting that the availability of dogs in animal shelters was at an all-time low. “That is,” says Sayres, “an environment that leads to a kind of irrational, competitive behavior.” The rescue mutt had become not just a virtue signal but a virtue test. Who was a good enough human being to deserve a dog in need of rescuing? Heather remembers the old easy days. “I went on Craigslist and an hour later, I had a puggle,” she says of her first dog-getting experience with her boyfriend in college. George the puggle humped everything in sight, shed everywhere, and chewed through furniture until the end of his life, but she loved him all the same. Flash-forward 16 years: She and that boyfriend are married, have two kids, and can’t seem to get a new dog no matter what they try. Yes, she could find a breeder easily online (currently for sale on Craigslist: a Yorkie-poo puppy from a breeder asking $350 and just a few screening questions). But instead, in the middle of the pandemic, “I was sending ten to 12 emails a night and willing to travel anywhere, and no one would give us any sort of animal,” she remembers. Shelters would send snappy emails about how her family wasn’t suited for a puppy, even though they made good money and had clearly cared for their dearly departed George — they once drove three hours to get the dog a specially made knee brace. “I was trying to be really up front with people and would say that my daughter has autism and that I have a 3-year-old, and they would say no. It felt like they were saying, ‘We don’t give dogs to people who have disabilities.’ ” It didn’t matter what kind of dog she applied for — older, younger, bigger, smaller — there was always an official-sounding excuse as to why her family wasn’t suitable. (“Pups this age bite and jump and scratch and while they are cute to look at, they are worse than a bratty ADHD toddler, without diapers,” one rescue wrote. “Sorry.”) She considered looking at emotional-support animals that work specifically with autistic youth but found out they could cost 18 grand and require a two-year waiting period. She couldn’t stomach the idea of setting up a GoFundMe, as other people in the community had. “It got to the point of me wondering, Okay, so what dogs do children get?” she recalls. “I always thought that dogs and children go together.” By the fall of 2020, Heather had turned back to breeders. “People get a little spicy when you say you paid for a dog. You want to scream that you tried your hardest, but it wasn’t possible,” she says. Others, like Zainab, figured out ways to work the system. She blanketed agencies with applications in the early months of the pandemic, applying for 60 dogs. (The ease of applying online might also explain the statistics.) She thought the fact that she had a leadership role in public education would demonstrate that she was both successful and nurturing. “I’m a professional, I make good money, and I have a master’s degree,” she tells me. She was rejected all the same. Finally, a co-worker suggested Zainab make a résumé in order to stand out. The multipage document — which features testimonials from high-powered friends, including local elected officials — is what got her an exclusive meeting with Penny the pug in a parking lot. She was handed over with a leash tied around her neck and vomited in the front seat of Zainab’s car about three blocks later. Success! Or take Lauren, who’d had dogs all her life and found living solo during COVID lonely. “You can’t be without an animal at this particular time,” she told herself. So she started applying for dogs on Petfinder and boutique-rescue websites. “I would look up at my clock, and it would be two in the morning,” she says. Her hopes were high when she got a meeting with a Chihuahua mix in the suburbs named Mary Shelley. Lauren thought the meeting went well, but it ultimately didn’t result in the interviewer granting the adoption. “Then I was in conspiracy-theory mode, thinking she doesn’t like gay people, or single people, or people who live in the city,” she says. “It was a crazy-making experience. It’s a pandemic, so your world is already turned upside down, but I became psychotic. “The people who run rescue organizations — this was their moment to shine,” she adds. “Even though they were totally bogged down with requests, they got to feel the power. They got to make someone’s dreams come true or smash them to the ground.” The inquiries can get extremely personal. “I found the questions very offensive,” says Joanna, a Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center nurse who tried to adopt last year with her architect husband. “I was like, ‘What does this have to do with getting a dog?’ ” Her husband didn’t even want to put the thought out into the universe, but he was forced to admit that he’d probably be the one to take a shared pet in the event of a divorce. The two also had to grapple with what would happen if one or both of them died of COVID during the pandemic. And would both of them be able to take three days off at a moment’s notice to help the dog acclimate to its new home? “I was frank with her and said, ‘I take care of cancer patients,’ ” says Joanna. “She was very unsatisfied with our answer.” “The more popular the rescue is on the internet, the more clout they have,” says Molly, a writer in New York. “If you have a really good social-media presence, you can throw your weight around.” (The clout goes both ways: Posting about your rescue dog on Instagram is an indirect way of broadcasting that someone out there deemed you morally worthy enough to be chosen.) She inquired about eight dogs in six weeks from about five different rescues, only to be continually rejected. She finally got an interview with a rescue agency whose cute dogs she had seen on social media. They asked to tour her apartment over Zoom. Fine. They asked for her references. Great. But then they asked if she would pay for an expensive trainer. She asked if she could wait — not only was it during the height of COVID, but the cost of the sessions with the trainer could be close to $1,000. The person she was dealing with said over email that dogs were investments and suggested she look elsewhere. “I was like, This is so Brooklyn,” she says. Still, others wished the warning about trainers had been more explicit. At the height of the pandemic, Steven remembers scrolling through social-media post after social-media post saying things like “URGENT: NEED TO FIND THIS GUY A HOME” while “picturing this dog on a conveyor belt going toward this whirring saw. And meanwhile I am screaming at my phone, ‘I applied and you turned me down!’ ” But after securing a dog, he came to believe the process, while tough on the human applicants, wasn’t tough enough when it came to the dog’s needs. Right off the bat, Cooper was very hyper and mouthy when playing. “We were doing the thing that everyone does, like, posting pics: ‘We’re at the park, isn’t this fun, hahaha,’ ” he says. But the reality was much less Instagram-worthy. Cooper became difficult to handle, especially in a small New York apartment; mouthiness escalated to gnashing his teeth and guarding food. “It’s embarrassing, and I hate having to tell people we had to give the dog back,” he says. (So much so that Steven requested a pseudonym for himself and for Cooper.) “To be frank, the experience we had with the dog was pretty traumatic. If this volunteer had felt so powerful, I wish that they had said we wouldn’t be able to handle this dog.” Although Steven’sInstagram is replete with photos of other friends’ dogs, evidence of Cooper’s existence has disappeared from the account. The rescue-dog demand has also been stressful for the overwhelmed (and overwhelmingly volunteer) workforce that keeps the supply chain running. On a recent Saturday, Jason was speeding toward JFK airport in a windowless white van covered in graffiti. Though he was on his way to help rescue dogs, he is the first to admit he’s not the biggest fan of the animals. “I just need something to do,” he says. “I was going crazy sitting around the house.” His friend, who was employed at a rescue, recommended him for an unpaid gig. Prior to the pandemic, he managed an Off Broadway play in the city. The 34-year-old, who is athletically built with a shaved head, has a compulsive need to be coordinating a production, and getting dogs to New York City from a different continent is definitely that. Many of the city’s rescue dogs come from other parts of the world these days, brought over by volunteers who take them through a complicated Customs process. This is part of what Pet Nation author Mark Cushing calls the “canine freedom train.” A former corporate trial attorney, Cushing had thought that American shelters were filled with dogs with a figurative hatchet outside their kennel; that was until his daughter, a shelter volunteer, said that, in fact, scores of people were lined up around the block every weekend in hopes of adopting a handful of dogs. “I started to talk to shelter leaders across the country,” Cushing says. “And one by one, they said any adoptable dog without a medical issue is gone by noon on Saturday. But the public didn’t know that. Only the dog seekers and the experts did.” Jason waited in arrivals, ready to stop anyone who walked by with dog crates. When he saw some, he swooped in. It turned out that he had ended up with an extra animal — one that was yowling like it needed to get out and pee. He couldn’t figure out to whom it belonged, and after about 40 minutes of drama in the pickup area, two large men jumped out of a truck with out-of-state plates. They handed Jason $20 before he knew what was happening, loaded the dog into their Silverado, and sped off toward North Carolina. It was unclear if they were adopters themselves or worked for a shelter. With that out of the way, Jason tried to carefully maneuver a luggage cart full of the remaining dog crates to the lot where he was parked. When one fell, the animal inside didn’t make a sound, presumably zonked from its long journey across the ocean. More volunteers were waiting at the shelter with food, water, and an enormous number of puppy pads when he arrived. After the animals decompressed from their long flight, they would be taken to an adoption event, where they would hopefully meet their new humans. Emily Wells hasn’t taken a vacation in years. She works full time on Wall Street but is also the coordinator for Pixies & Paws Rescue — a job that she does in between calls and meetings and emails. That means responding to DMs on Instagram about available dogs, attending adoption events on weekends, and getting on the phone with a vet at 10 p.m. because one of her fosters got sick. That also means screening applications, which more than doubled during the height of the pandemic. Typically, she denies about one-third. This part of her job might not be the most physically demanding, but it does take a psychic toll. “What I’ve found is a lot of people are very entitled,” she says. “They send nasty emails. I’ve been called every name in the book. But there are reasons we deny. We are entrusted with placing a living, breathing thing in someone’s home for the rest of its life.” She wishes people would understand that the rescue is just her and one other person trying their best to deal with off-the-charts levels of demand. “I know rescues that don’t even reply,” she says. “So the fact that we do and still get shit for that is annoying.” And explaining why someone was rejected can create its own problems: What if they use that information to fib on their next application? Rescues like Wells’s are largely dependent on foster parents to house the dogs they import. Foster-to-adopt is one way that people adopt pets, a means of testing out compatibility and increasing one’s chances of adopting in a hypercompetitive city. But demand for dogs was so high last year that even proven volunteers couldn’t get their hands on a foster. Take Suchita, an animal lover who moved from India to New Jersey for her husband’s VP job with a big bank in 2019. Unable to work owing to visa issues, she became a prolific dog fosterer for a rescue in Queens. She also worked with a program that pairs volunteers with elderly animal owners who need help taking their pets out on walks. That program was suspended during COVID, which left Suchita desperate for more dog time. Figuring that online volunteer work might fill the void, she started helping another organization wade through its massive backlog of applications by calling references. She offered to foster more dogs but didn’t hear back, nor did her attempts to adopt pan out. When she went ahead and adopted Sasha, a Pomeranian, through another rescue agency, the first organization was not happy. “After I posted Sasha on Instagram, they called me saying it was a conflict of interest to have worked with another agency,” Suchita says. “I was not at all prepared for that. Then they unfollowed me. It really hurt, but no hard feelings.” She is humbly aware of the fact that in New York, there is always someone who has a nicer apartment, a better job, and more experience than you. If everything else is equal, why shouldn’t a shelter try to give a dog to someone who can afford to give it the best life possible? “They don’t treat humans nicely, but at least they treat dogs nicely,” she says. In some corners of the rescue world, a reckoning is taking place. Rachael Ziering, the executive director of Muddy Paws Rescue, which found homes for around 1,000 dogs last year, got her start volunteering at other nonprofits whose adoption processes she found abhorrent. She saw, for instance, people look at adoption applications and say, “Oh, that’s a terrible Zip Code. I’m not adopting to them.” Or they would judge people based on their appearance. “I know a lot of groups that will ask for your firstborn along with your application,” she says. “I think it’s well intentioned, but I think it just took a turn at some point. It’s morphed into sort of an unhealthy view that no one’s ever gonna be good enough. Nobody’s ever perfect — the dog or the person.” Muddy Paws is instead embracing what is known as “open adoption,” a philosophy that allows for rescue volunteers to be more open-minded about what a good dog home might look like. It has started gaining traction among groups like the ASPCA in recent years, in part because the organization’s current president was denied a dog — twice. Instead of rejecting applicants outright based on their giving the “wrong” answers, Ziering’s team speaks with hopeful dog owners at length, learning about their lifestyles and histories to match them with the pet best for their family. Still, even a more inclusive philosophy toward profiling adoption applicants comes up against the intractable math: There are only so many dogs that need homes. Though Muddy Paws rejects less than one percent of applicants, some decide to adopt elsewhere if it means getting a dog faster. Is any of this good for the dogs? Depends on whom you ask. If the intense questions involved in securing the dog cause someone to reflect before making a decision they’ll regret — sure. Others note that the average dog’s life span has hovered around 11 years for decades. “I think it’s probably true that the majority of people who want to adopt a dog should not,” Jessica Pierce, a bioethicist who studies human-animal relationships, tells me. When Bella, the 11-year-old she got from the Humane Society, dies, she’s not sure she will get a replacement, noting that the pandemic puppy boom is “driven by a reflection of human narcissism and neurosis.” “A lot of this is driven by Instagram,” she says. “We have this expectation that dogs are not really dogs; they’re toys or fashion accessories.” I’m not pushing you, but it seems like you want to bring him home,” the Badass Animal Rescue volunteer said with the controlled energy of a used-car salesperson. Bill and Sherrie, a middle-aged couple who had lost their English bulldog three years ago, were looking for a replacement. The dog with a bright-red boner jumped on Bill, and everyone pretended not to notice. “He definitely has energy,” Bill said brightly. The couple were on the fence, and the volunteer could sense the close slipping away. Although this organization saw applications rise 200 percent during the pandemic, things are now recalibrating back to normalcy. We are, it seems, witnessing the cooling of the puppy boom. The unbearable loneliness of the pandemic has abated, replaced with anxiety about how to possibly do all the things all of us used to do every day. New Yorkers are being summoned back to the office or planning vacations. Many young professionals are finding that, when given the option between scrolling through rescue websites until 2 a.m. or doing drunken karaoke in a room full of friends, Dog Tinder is losing its appeal. Local shelters are seeing application numbers slip — many say they have returned to pre-COVID levels — which, in turn, has made it slightly more of an adopter’s market. Bill and Sherrie went to the hallway to talk it over. He was definitely a puller like their old dog, Xena. And he was also a hell of a shedder. The volunteer kept talking about something called a “love match,” but was this really one? “We’re just gonna need a little more time,” Sherrie confessed when they came back inside. No one was making eye contact. As they prepared to leave, the dog jumped up on Bill again, his tongue flopping sideways and his wagging tail spraying white fur. He was clearly not aware that the tenor of the room had shifted. “We might be back,” Bill said with an obvious twinge of guilt. “Don’t worry!” We will probably look back on the class of pandemic dogs adopted in 2020 as the most desirable unwanted dogs of all time — the ultimate market-scarcity score for a slice of virtuous, privileged New York City. People like Danielle will see them paraded around places like McCarren Park, the living, breathing trophies for self-satisfied owners who made it through the gauntlet. At least for the next 11 years or so. |

2024.05.09 03:42 ItinerantDoGooder Installing solar in a day for under $350 - Complete how-to guide
I posted this to the Casita Forum as well but since I know different people prefer different sites (and Reddit is Google-searchable), I thought I'd post it here as well. I hope it helps others. submitted by ItinerantDoGooder to casitatrailers [link] [comments] We just bought a 2018 Casita LD and the first project was to get some solar on the roof to keep the battery topped up. Having built out a camper van a few years ago, this wasn't new to me but I’m by no means an expert, just a well-researched amateur. All in all, this was a pretty simple install and relatively cheap. I know there were a number of solar threads but I know when I was starting out how helpful it was to have a step-by-step guide so I hope this helps others looking to do similar. Parts list: - Renogy Bifacial 115-watt square solar panel - $100: This is a perfect fit between the fan and bathroom exhaust. It is bifacial which means technically it could charge from the underside as well. I didn't need this feature but the dimensions fit perfectly and it was the same price as a non-bifacial (when purchased on Amazon) - Victron SmartSolar 30-amp MPPT controller w/ Bluetooth - $128: You can get other controllers for cheaper but Victron makes the best and this is an exceptional price. It includes Bluetooth monitoring via the app. The single panel only requires about 8 amps but this allows plenty of room for expansion in the future - Z-brackets - $15: I initially tried to purchase the adjustable brackets to slightly angle the panel so as to take advantage of the bifacial feature and to allow great surface area for adhesion but ultimately those brackets required too much modification to adapt to the curve of the casita so I went with the traditional z-bracket - Renogy 10' 10 AWG solar cable - $20: Exactly the correct length to run from the panel, through the gray water vent, and to the tow connector in the closet. 115-watts wouldn't require 10 AWG wire but in case I decide to add more solar panels in the future, I could still use these cables. Also, the cable run from the 7-pin connector is 10-gauge and consistency is neat. - 30-amp breaker - $16: This runs between the panels and the controller. I prefer this to a fuse since it allows me to easily disconnect the solar from the controller when needed - VHB 4950 Mounting Tape - $16: I reached out to 3M to inquire what tape to use to mount aluminum to fiberglass and explained my use case. This is the tape they recommend along with...
MOUNTING THE SOLAR First I attached the z-brackets to the panels and put a drop of Loctite on each bolt. The bolt size is 5mm. The order is (from inside the panel) bolt, locking washer, washer, panel, bracket, washer, nut. Next, I placed the panel on the roof of the Casita to test the fit. I positioned the panel with the brackets on the front and back rather than side-to-side for 2 reasons: a) Since the wind is coming mostly from the front, I figured this would provide more strength. No idea if this is true or not but it makes sense in my head. b) this positions the wires on the side closest to the gray water vent coming out from the closet which is where I want them. The cables should be on the door side of the Casita. I determined how much I need to bend the brackets to accommodate the slight slope of the roof and bent accordingly. The brackets are aluminum so they bend easily with just your hand or pliers. Once I had a flush fit and centered on the roof, I traced the outline of the brackets in pencil. Next I cleaned the mounting points on the roof and brackets with alcohol and applied the 3M tape primer (recommended by the representative at 3M) with a Q-tip. Once everything dried, I applied the VHB tape to the brackets. Next I placed the panel on the roof making sure the cables are on the Casita door side and the bent brackets in the front. I aligned the brackets with the outline I drew and removed the film from the VHB first on the driver’s side, leaving the protective film on the passenger side tape. I pressed firmly for 30 seconds to ensure a good adhesion. Moving to the passenger side, I pulled the cables out from underneath the panel, removed the protective strip from the VHB tape and affixed the panel to the roof, again pressing firmly on the brackets for 30 seconds. Then I left some weight on the panel overnight to help the VHB tape to adhere and ensure a flush fit. ROUTING THE WIRES AND ATTACHING THE CONTROLLER On my model the vent cap for the gray tank above the closet just lifted off with a little pressure. It looks like there was supposed to be a screw there but it was missing. Other models may require drilling out the rivets. From inside the closet I drilled two holes through the elbow of the PVC pipe directly below the vent with (I think) a 3/16” drill bit. I fed the wires through the vent into the closet and routed them along the wall behind the PVC. NOTE: the wires are the same color so you need to keep track of which is positive and which negative. The MC4 connector has a tiny + or - on it to help but once the wires are on the inside, you won’t know unless you label them. Next I attached the solar controller to the wood hatch at the bottom of the closet covering the wires. This may or may not be the best place for your setup but it has the benefit of providing a nice run of 10 AWG wire to the battery. CONNECTING THE CONTROLLER TO THE BATTERY I cut two lengths of 10 AWG wire about 18” long and stripped them. On one side of one of the 18" wires and one side of the 12" wire I attached a ring terminal with shrink tubing. Electrical tapes works also Next I connected the wires to the Casita battery. It’s a good idea to disconnect the battery first to make sure you don’t accidentally short the wires. NOTE: Casita uses black or yellow for hot and white for neutral. Most solar connections use red for hot and black for neutral or, as in the case of the wires linked above, black for both. Confusing, I know. I connected the positive (hot) wire with the ring terminal to the small red fuse mounted on the floor and the other side to the positive battery connection on the solar controller. Then I connected the other 18" wire to the negative battery terminal on the controller. I opened the IDC connector (aka tap splice) for the neutral (thick white wire) and swapped it for a wire nut that joined all three wires (the two that were already connected and the negative coming from the solar controller) together. A little electrical tape kept everything secure. Once both battery wires were connected, I reconnected the battery and the controller came alive and could be set to the appropriate battery type and charging profile. For the Victron controller and the AGM battery I have that was apparently the default profile (confusingly named Gel Victron Deep Discharge). You do not want the “AGM Spiral Cell” profile which is not for AGM batteries. I recommend downloading the app for more controls and to track usage. CONNECTING THE SOLAR PANEL TO THE CONTROLLER Once the charging profile is set, I connected the negative solar wire to the controller. I mounted the 30-amp breaker next to the controller. I attached the third ring terminal to the positive solar wire and connected it to the breaker. I took the 12" wire with the ring terminal and connected that between the solar controller and the breaker. Ideally the terminals will be crimped and shrinktubed but pliers and electrical tape also work. Once all the wires are in place, give a firm tug on all the connections to make sure they’re not going to come out. Head back up to the roof and connect the MC4 connectors and ziptie everything in place to make sure it’s not going to flap in the wind. https://preview.redd.it/wbw1m0d32bzc1.jpg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0364164cedc8106c41b89ac0099fc8fd3f35c0f1 https://preview.redd.it/prfvikq42bzc1.jpg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=523c72239ed20f0ae6095aa70dee73728bef52b6 https://preview.redd.it/g6ubseli2bzc1.jpg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8f0a3001c1e4b7eef90a76125247c5989715b603 FINALLY... Check the Victron app to see if everything is working and the controller is charging. If everything is working correctly, replace the vent cover and screw or rivet it down. It’s a good idea to have a dip in the wires before they enter the vent so that any water running down the wires won’t enter. Last, I caulked the holes that were drilled for the wires and ziptied everything in place in the closet. A couple days later I applied Eternabond over the brackets as a secondary measure to ensure they won’t come loose and to keep water and dirt from working their way under the VHB tape. And Bob’s your uncle. https://preview.redd.it/quenw2192bzc1.jpg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f93caa6b987455b495052a503b9737080436f9b |

2024.05.08 01:13 Uthakker2 Taking my Dutch KNIL to the Welsh Nationals 2024
Hello there, submitted by Uthakker2 to boltaction [link] [comments] again. After the WTC earlier this year I yet again found myself with way to many brown points and money saved up. Naturally I had to venture out and blow it on playing a bit more plastic toy soldiers somewhere in Europe. After talking to the ever friendly Pete from the Juggernauts after the WTC and further drawing on the wisdom of one Alistair of Scotland, asking for their recommendations on a proper singles bash on their group of islands they recommended the Welsh Nationals. Held in Ireland. Just kidding. https://preview.redd.it/9zgc53xd12zc1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8286ccb5797ea24cc47ed1195b7d1e16ad609c7d So, what are the Welsh Nationals? A lot of the information about the event can be drawn from this here banner of the Facebook event page. It's a Bolt Action (V2) GT held in Cardiff, Wales, at the marvelous Firestorm Games store, organized by Rhys and Josh - who did so expertly. That being said a fair warning to those allergic to all things competitive: this is an AAR to one of the biggest competitive BA events of 2024 and my retelling is from the perspective of a competitive player. If you don't like that type of content, I recommend skipping this post! It was held on the 4th and 5th of May, which were Sat & Sunday respectively. There were going to be 3 rounds at 2,5 hours on the first and 2 more rounds of 2,5 hours on the second day. Good stuff. 52 players had signed on. Even better stuff. So I booked some flights, packed my things and traveled from Düsseldorf over Amsterdam to Bristol, England, to then arrive in beautiful Cardiff on Friday night, just in time before the event. My return was planned for Monday morning, I was ready to go! Bring. It. On. Disclaimer: I was busy playing at the time/or looking up the next mission: Photos are few and of shotty quality, my apologies, I tried - and also I'm retelling strictly from my perspective and from what I remember. Take it with a grain of salt and room for errors in details. Spelling errors are hidden on purpose for you. Army Composition Rules: (in case you somehow missed it)
As the title gave away, I ran took my Dutch (KNIL) to their second planned singles outing since the WTC in February. I had still a BUNCH of painting and basing to do, so I used the time to get on finishing my still very bare bone force. I'd preferred playing practice games, but as there is not to much going on in terms of active BA playing around here I only got two games of practice in. Which in fact were the grand total of games I played between the WTC and the Welsh Nationals. I could've used more, a lot more! https://preview.redd.it/r53ntoix32zc1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=146e1fc3d8f870822c316403423e456fb5a650d5 So, 1250 points. I've never played at those points. Less so with my Dutch. Should've taken my US or Germans, who can really use the extra points, whereas my Dutch excel at lower point costs due to their absurd cheapness. That being said I used my WTC 1000 point list as a basis and then expanded from there. I cut an inexperienced mule, upgraded a regular mule to vet, dropped an inexperienced horse and truck and from the freed points bought myself two Alvis Straussler armored cars, another light utility vehicle with light anti tank cannon and two regular anti tank rifles. My new list so went from 1000 points and 25 orders to 1249 points and 27 orders while trading 2 useless spam-dice for 5 more combat units. It seemed like a theoretically good idea. As said, sadly I could only practice twice, and only once on the actual mission pack. My army was vast and soft as butter on a summers day. Perfect for taking on the best the GB-meta could sling at me. https://preview.redd.it/e6yw2u9w42zc1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97293f083f68946d7c8f2ea6d07a7624b1f4e9c9 My list: Infantry:
So what does that all tally up to? I'm running a tank platoon with four fully enclosed 7+ machine-gun vehicles, mounting a total of 10 individual MMGs for some sweet 50 shots of highly mobile firepower. Two of theme even sprinkle in some Recce for good measure. I'm also running a leaf-blowegunline with 3 howitzers and two mortars which are supplemented by 10 MMGs, 2 snipers, 4 AT guns and 2 AT rifles to deal with pesky gunslingers. I got more. Thee-Hee. I'm also running a horde of 66 infantry with 36 being tough fighters. sure they shirk, but that don't matter too much in most cases, as they get to retake order test with their full strength and on a charge put out some amazing 11 attacks /6 of which are TF... While costing about half as much as a single Japanese bamboo squad. They clock in at just 38 points in this layout. Unless they're charged in the open they outperform nearly any other unit in the game pointwise! Of course they will lose and die against a plethora of enemies in CC - but you kill 3 Ghurkas while at it - and you've outperformed him point-wise ;) it's amazing! After so many words, the actual Battle Report: Round #1: Sectors With check-in each player was given a number for the duration of the event (mine being 29). Every Table was given a letter (A-Z). The first pairing were like so: 1 vs 2 on A, 3 vs 4 on B and so on. This meant I played against Keith (30) on some letter half way down the alphabet. The mission was "sectors" and played largely into the strengths of my army. You deploy in a quarter diagonally opposite of your opponent. There was predatory-bombardment allowed. Which sucks, but on with it. You score 1 VP per kill, 1 per unit in a neutral quarter and 2 per unit in the enemy deployment zone. I have 27 units, its not hard for me to rack in point just by moving them. I deployed along the neutral zones around me and prepared for moving my entire army into scoring secotrs. Keith played late war elite Germans with two Kugelblitzes, but his few order dice meant that he couldn't put any dent in my numbers and thus i smothered all three other sectors with units, largely ignoring his two beefy tanks and gunning down his infantry with amassed vehicles and artillery. Good stuff and a first victory for me with the secondary secured. the table. This may have been my favorite table of the event (from the ones I played) https://preview.redd.it/62m7ifobb2zc1.jpg?width=1661&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=09e5008e4a6491c7bbad81f8be12c9f2fe8dabe1 https://preview.redd.it/tiancfobb2zc1.jpg?width=1836&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f17f651f49367ae7936cb99d770f06bb191f552d Round #2: Heartbreak Ridge As Swiss goes, I now faced another victor from round one. In this case i went up against one Dan Lane of the Juggernauts podcast and his French horde. In Heartbreak Ridge there are three objectives, one in each players quarter and a neutral one smack in the center of the table. This is usually where 95% of the action happens and sadly all to often a draw is produced by two armies grinding to a halt over the center objective. In our game, fielding somewhat similar armies with similar dice counts (his 25 vs my 27) we had somewhat of a mirror match. Where he brought bigger howitzers, flamers and cavalry I had brought more armor. He pushed units from reserve from his entire board edge. Infantry in the center, closest to the center objective, with his cavalry going around the flanks, likely trying to bait me to move my much slower infantry to intercept and if ignored: tackle my quarters objective. his snipers messed mine up, my mortars messed up his heavy howitzer, my 4 armored vehicles bullied their way up mid-table against a sole howitzer that had taken some hits. he formed a tight circle of small arms around the center objective whilst i tried to push my swarm of swordboies onto said objective. meat-grinder. I had a truck with a troop on the objective first, which he routed of the table when they failed to rally inside their transport on 3 pins with two attempts. bad luck. but i got 5 more, all running towards the middle. As there is a ruin and we have a massive 52 dice in the bag we have to make good time, which we did all things considered. I pushed another unit onto the objective at the end of turn 4 and he moved an engineers squad into point blank range (flamer missing), a cavalry squad shot to 3 guys, a lone CO and the remnants of an inex. infantry section of his (2 men) into very short range of the objective. however I was holding it in a way he couldn't make contact with it - so he kept shooting the squad on target, who were in hard cover, but still he managed to get them up to three pins. we enter turn 5, i get my dice first. nice. i rally my squad on obj. which would've likely sealed the deal. but of course i fail and go down, with my 3 pins. at least in hard cover. in short succession we draw our last hand full of dice. my two tanks grind through the ruin wiping out all of his units that could've held the objective with their 6 MMgs - but in doing so, killing the engineers right next to my squad before they could activate, they opened the LOF for one of his snipers who of course shot, hit and routed my unit on target. one of my tanks touching the objective made the draw inevitable, and there was not gonna be a 6th turn. 3 more infantry units of mine failing to activate with 1 and 2 pins respectively, even on double tries for one of them the downside of shirker infantry :D... It was a great game, very much exciting to the very end and swinging back and forth. In hindsight I should've used my tanks to get onto the center early on and bully back his advancing units who had no real anti-tank means making it easier for my infantry to run onto center... hardly playing 2 games in 3 months really takes a toll on your problem solving skills - or rather your redundancy-planning. Anyhow. A great and fast game, sadly a draw, but i got myself that secondary and having bully vehicles is always good times. Sadly I didn't take pictures of this table. Dan Lane would move on to win the tournament, so i pride myself being the single draw on his record for this event. Round #3: The Bigger The Better Drawing is similar to Losing always somewhat of a downer early on in such an event, as it usually means you drop out of the top field. This event turned out very different and also, I got to face off against Juggernaut Alex Bundock and his Polish lancers. The Bigger The Better is much like Meeting Engagement - but instead of 1 kill = 1 VP it was split up to where units of higher point-cost would reward higher VPs for being killed. A rule I like very much, as in other scenarios killing a Tiger is worth as much as killing a mule. Which is very counter-immersive. Anyhow: we played on a desert map with lots of buildings and high walls, which his cavalry could recce and regroup around but my tanks and armored cars didn't struggle much to keep up. We had a whole lot of nothing happening all game on my right hand side of the table where 80% of my army and his two tankettes fought an awkward battle of incompetence leading to nothing at all being killed (iirc), whereas all the action happend on my left, his right. here we had a glorious cat and mouse skirmish of 3 gun-trucks, a CO, 2 At-rifles, 2 tanks, 1 armored car and one blob of my sword-slingers against 4 of his vet. cavalry squads and two dakka-tanks. As this was his side of the board, so to speak, opposite to his deployment, he could occasionally bring his two med. howitzers and sniper to bear on me but to little effect with all the buildings in the way. While I was really not very effective at killing him, he got a tad bloodthirsty and charged his units in-between the houses all my units were hiding behind and around where, with time and many misses, i was able to pick his units apart. Oddly having 2 infantry and a sniper next to the secondary for the whole game, I never realized this actively and thus never moved onto the secondary. But neither did he, so it was a win for me, with not secondary - and a bloody good game against Alex, who I count as a friend and ever helpful fellow hobbyist (he is the one who offered me a ride, had i stayed at the same hotel, and also provided me with a large tray for my army, as my travel-one is to small). Great guy, great game. the last 4 of 36 lancers hiding behind a high wall. The lone bear holding down the med. artillery, after recrewing the other gun twice! lots of my stuff just sitting around the right hand flank doing nothing. smoking tanks to the west. dead lancers Day One: 2 W - 0 L - 1 D and 2/3 secondary objectives Round #4: Seize and Hold On to a very interesting mission I've never seen before: Seize and Hold against one Paul Wickens and his Soviet horde (21 dice). Table quarters, again, with 4 objectives, two per quarter, one in each placed by both players - however in a so small corridor that it didn't actually matter (8" from all table edges, 8" from long center line and 8" from other objectives. Essentially this means its a small, 8"*16" corridor, which, after the native player places his objective gets roughly cut in half or more... so it's more an illusion of choice when placing an objective in the enemy quarter. I placed my objective in Pauls quarter as close to his table-flank and the long centerline as possible, put 3 squads of infantry and a whole train of stuff into outflank. My plan was to push into his sector and onto the objective with sheer brute force. My armor was reserved to come in mid table from my long side to stop any pushes from his to my diagonally-opposed quatre and also stop anyone trying to take the secondary - but me (I now had learnt that they were worth an actual tournament point each - rather than just being tie-breakers). the rest, roughly a third of my army deployed in my sector to block off any chance of his to come from reserve onto my two objectives. I was playing for the win big time. Sadly the table was spammed with hard-cover, LOS-blocking buildings and HIDDEN-rules were in play. Pretty much from the get go Paul aborted any potential plans of trying to attacking my sector and focused everything on the defense of his. Playing the long game this one. Bringing in his reserved infantry not to challenge me, but to pack his short board edge so my out flankers were unable to arrive from more than 24" into the table. where a convenient wall was placed with hidden vet. Scouts in Ambush, who simply waited the whole game for my outflank to happen. Along with them Scouts he had 12 dogteams and two fausts all hiding (actually "hidden" keyword" behind houses and his two heavy autocannons in constant ambush. His entire setup screamed "You Shall Not Pass". Since Im not part of the GB championship, of which the Welsh Nationals is one of the three tourstops, I had no reason to play the long game. And personally I find playing for draws in singles events very unsatisfactory. So I pushed him as hard as I could. starting wiht an AT rifle to bait an ambush, which he didnt trigger, but using them boies to spot all his hidden units on that side and even killing a vet. tankhunter behind one of the houses, trying to get them fausts removed. I was right at the wall with his scouts, about 5" from the objective i had placed for me. He charged the AT rifle with the hunters - and got killed :D. Hopefully I roll a d6 regroup, to land 2" further up, not far enough to cross the wall and clear the 1" gap of the scouts.... But he charges me again, this time a dog-team. He dies, again. I regroup, this time a whole... 2" across the wall and painfully close to the objective. I could smell it. one of his snipers close by turns and kills one of the team, when of course i fail my morale check and get routed. I drive up my truck to "the wall", he ambushes me a bit earlier to limit my pour-out. where i roll another glorious 2 to only make it up to the wall, now with a pin and having taken losses almost impossible to get the squad to move up to the objective. But I'm lucky. He charges me with a squad of his inex. infantry, which my tough fighting shirkers of course snack up and regroup...... 2" over the wall, but not far enough. These last 2 survivors get mopped up by something else he has on that corner. which is most of his army. two more squads of infantry arrive from reserve but of course cannot move over the wall nor enter along his short edge due to his infantry being spread around there. In a last ditch effort I successfully bait his ambushing autocannon and remaining faust with a racing utility truck of mine, running towards his other objective. After having baited him I race my armored car already on the field in an 24" dash toward the other objective to obstruct. we turn into turn 6 and i manage to activate the armored car first to connect with the objective. the game is won, i turn the car, fire 5 shots into his holding CO (going down) and into the autocannon, hitting 4 times. I fail to wound him at all with the 4 hits, neither the CO, we draw the last dice of the game. of course its his. autocannon activates through the pin, no problem. double hit. double pen. double boom boom goes my armored car. the game ends on a for me unhappy draw, However at least I got the secondary and had a fun game against Paul. mid game, one can already see the reserves pouring hin along his short edge, where the veterans with SMG hold \"the wall\", my oibjective ever so close behind. table layout. nothing at all happened on my side of the board. it all went down on his short edge of the board. this could've been a thing of beauty - but he just had to get the dice and roll some good hits, did he :D... Round #5: Meeting Engagement A chill and easy last mission against the excellent Richard CZ and his Ghurkas. This was the only Ghurka army I faced at this event. To my big surprise and relief. Sadly in the one mission where they were probably best against me: kill points - and points per unit don't matter... and i have 27 squishy dice against his 16. The mission, in case anyone doesn't know is: move on along your long table edge and simply kill the other guy better than he kills you. good stuff. I had two guntrucks with CO's and infantry outflanking both sides to allow some nice side/rear shots into any adventurous tanks and mop up rear placed artillery and support with my infantry. Ghurkas with an M3 Lee and Stuart were a different ballgame however. Richard brilliantly played a "denied flank", rendering anything i put on the other table-half - including my out-flankers, redundant. All the action was always going to be on the small open corridor on the left table half. I took the secondary mid-table at my discretion, as there was no one to contest and the battle raged to my left. his para-Ghurkas, tanks and mortars against my armor and artillery. no point in tossing in infantry for me. I beat him to a bloody pulp. Then he beat me to a bloody pulp. Then, pretty sure we were drawn, +1/-1 something, he had what felt like the upper hand, his Lee and stuart raigning supreme, my bigger guns dead/unmanned, my guntrucks having to hide from his stuarts firepower... didnt look to shiny. I brought my outflanks not to attack him - but along my own long edge sprinting over the open field towards the safety of houses to not get caught by his advancing army, which i couldnt stop in that concentration... All looked dire, until he, I think, became a bit bloodthirsty and rushed his brengineers in to kill a guntruck and tank in the middle of my bottom left army conentration. his flamer missed, and his 10 shots mmg caused but a pin. It was the top of a new turn and we were at about 10 vs 20 dice, having me draw first. my tank wiped out his engineers with its 15 shots. he drew and activated his Bren not to move, but shoot, not killing my gun-truck again. he drew again, moving up his Stuart into the fray and failed to kill the gun-truck - again, also missing my tank with his AT gun. Now i activated my outflanking infantry which had entered the table and were pressed to the ground along my long edge to get up and run towards his lone, actived bren, proximity kill assured. one of my 4 guntrucks shot and caused 2 pins by damage (1 result) on his Lee, then my howitzer hit on a magical 6 on his Lee, causing damage through the roof for 4 pins, my mortar too hit on a 5+ ranging in (iirc) and caused damage for 4 pins total - routing the monster. my tripple pinned, indestructible gunbuggy activates for a fire - and this the stuart in short range blowing it up. We shook hands on a great and bloody game, ending 15 mins early. Secondary secured. Very good result against ghurkas in kill points for this force. a whole bunch of stuff just standing around uselessly. my right outflankers just taking pot-shots at super long range... you can see all my stuff on my left looking at the stuart that had just died there (some models already packed away). you can see our three dead tanks and my burnt down armored car between the two houses. bloody mess. Final Results: 3 W - 0 L - 2 D with 4 secondaries for 15 Tournament points. I cam in 4th, which I'm happy about with my Dutch. Tournament take-aways: The event was well run, awesome prize-support, lots of awards, friendly people and organizers. The size of it meant that newecasual players could play more casually at their speed after the first round, while the nasty cheesers like myself got to play amongst themselves in the top 10ish. good stuff! Also lunch was included in the very fair event-costs and the venue itself was handicapped-accessible and a proper nerd-heaven. Very cool! Im not going to another BA event when I have to check into a hostel. not gonna do it. In-Game-wise take aways: I was unsure of the Dutch at 1250, as they do not get that much stronger with more points (imo), they excel at 750-1000 point games. Whereas many other nations can dramatically ramp up their power with them extra 250 points, for Dutch not really that much ramps up I think. I tried very hard to squeeze something sensible into the army. However after the event I am positively surprised of how well they carried themselves at 1250. At times it almost feels like cheating running this army. You just have so much of everything. So much redundancy, something dies? who cares, Ill put another 2-3 up there! A word on missions: I am no fan of missions that lend themselves to be easily drawn, like "Seize and Hold", You spawn on two objectives - all you need to draw. All your units are hidden. Just hang tight and defend your position and you cant lose. For tourney play not my favorite. My guess is roughly a third or half of all tables drew that one. Special Thanks go to Daniel Moody and Sally who graciously offered me rides to & from the venue and even let me borrow a phone charger-adapter, as my EU plug wasn't fit for the GB sockets. Thanks a bunch and until next time! |

2024.05.06 06:29 DryClothes2894 My unicorn Dual-CCD 5800X running 2100 FCLK, no WHEAs and Dual-Rank B-Die@4200c16, stable!
Alrighty so this is probably the most bizzare 5800X yall will ever see. This came out of a random prebuilt I had laying around so yall should keep those handy cause you might get lucky like I did. submitted by DryClothes2894 to overclocking [link] [comments] This 5800X is a dual CCD CPU, that is the cores are the secondary CCD of a dud 5950X, many programs like HWINFO, OCCT, and PBO2 tuner all show this, the cores are 8-15 instead of 0-7. This actually breaks the curve optimizer in the BIOS as well funnily enough. In terms of silicon quality though it kinda sucks, to the point where on stock auto everything it cant even run Ycruncher without raising the LLC and doing some tuning and dialing in on the cores and PBO limits. https://preview.redd.it/9w93rqzxaqyc1.png?width=330&format=png&auto=webp&s=355246bd70b173fe4289d5de370cfbdaf23908b4 https://preview.redd.it/mgn61dfudqyc1.png?width=529&format=png&auto=webp&s=9962313e7e25af6bac37f5df222439a5d5789751 So already this is a weird chip, being dual CCD. What puts it into unicorn territory is that it runs 2100 on the FCLK like nothing, it even did this on the dog board from the prebuilt, although with more aggressive voltages. So I decided to invest into this unicorn and give it a proper stable, and went all in on a very 2021 esque build, featuring a MSI MAG B550 Unify-X, a strong bin of GSkill Trident Z Royal B-Die, 360mm AIO with 6 fans in Push-Pull, as Zen 3 soft throttles at 70c so cooling is everything, and an RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition. The build turned out great: https://preview.redd.it/qzd82dj1cqyc1.jpg?width=2250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00615184e978bb77700bae4ea0c2938fdc7ee0b8 https://preview.redd.it/04ek5758cqyc1.jpg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=44e543e765ee1cc2eae556dd3a47a861805f99ac And now onto the overclocking aspect of this build, here is the final tune that has so far passed Ycruncher VT3 and TM5 Anta777 Extreme. Ill probably run some Karhu on it later but it probably will be alright. I should add too that with this high FCLK there was some audio issues if the voltages werent quite set right, even though 2100 can boot on almost auto VDDGs. 2133 FCLK and up seems to boot hole on both dog board and the Unify-X, if that werent the case I'm sure higher speeds could at least run with some WHEAs, but so far nothing Ive done has been able to induce any WHEA errors the way my other Zen 3 CPUs easily do on higher FCLK. This screenshot is just from the last runs where I finally nailed the last few things down, but before this its already ran plenty of VT3 and TM5 when I was making sure certain subtimings would be stable for this, and the whole time on the Unify or the prebuilt its never had a single WHEA error reported in HWINFO, nor has it seen any significant performance inconsistency that wasn't related to the cores not having great silicon and it would be hovering at the 70c soft throttle point modulating the boost speed up and down slightly. This definitely is a great board for RAM OC and I'm glad I found one as they seem to be quite rare these days. I did raise the drive strengths a bit when I was troubleshooting something but I don't think those helped much past going from stock 20 to say 24 or 30ish ohms. Interestingly when I was testing flat 16s for the primaries I would always get one single error at exactly a half hour into the run for TM5, and if I ran it an hour I'd get a second one, and so on. It was always the same error too, but I cant understand the cryptic arabic lettering that the codes use so I was kinda confused. It ended up being either tRP or tRAS, I tested those both at 16 with a 17 tRCD and it had the error but all at 17 passes. The primary timings I suppose arent the best for B-Die at this speed but the subtimings are pretty solid, 3-7 on the tWTRS/tWTRL is strong B die even at like 3600, 119ns tRFC is as low as it goes, lower doesnt boot. SCLs at 3 sadly was error city, but I could probably run the Same Dimm/Different Dimm timings at 4-4 6-6 and be fine, as they were on that initially for a while till I decided to loosen them to rule out that variable when tracing down the one error every half hour. I think tWR is at the register limit, TDWR at 8 is imposible above 4000, I tried 9 and that didn't work so its on 10. Also like 48 Proc ODT is the only value that even boots at these settings, anything else is instant training boot loops. I would include some benchmark results but the numbers are kinda bleh because the CPU has very poor boost speeds, anything over 50 for boost override and it cant even boot, It needs to be on very high LLC to even pass Ycruncher at bone stock, and thus from all that Vcore needed it obviously gets very hot and hits the 70c soft throttle point quickly even with a 360mm Push-Pull setup for the cooling. But ill take some crazy fast DDR4 B-die over a few 100mhz on the CPU any day. https://preview.redd.it/6vgafcy5eqyc1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=fbd737e25d36d515d233c7356c0cb83b663aab96 |

Fast forward to April 2024, the Iowa Senate approved a bill that provides legal immunity to agricultural chemical manufacturers from lawsuits alleging the companies did not inform users about the health risks, provided the products include the necessary EPA labels. “Why would they do this?!”, you ask. Answer: Campaign contributions. Bayer, who owns RoundUp is very active in the political world. In fact, owns BAYERPAC, which is legally authorized to participate in the political process at the federal and state levels by contributing financially to political candidates. https://preview.redd.it/y39dvagew9yc1.png?width=1076&format=png&auto=webp&s=3886b851476de8fb16c35d79fc71d9f7ac372552 Bayer also makes contributions outside of BAYERPAC. You can view some of their 2020 contributions here, there are a lot of them. They donate to both parties, bit like Zionists, they're most likely owned by some, probably Black Rock, State Street, & or Vanguard, or even Artisan. So, you can see why they are able to get whatever they want passed in congress. That, my friends, was the true story of Roundup, Glyphosate, Rigged Studies, Corruption and the secret Population Control Weapon, disguised as a weed killer, funded by Rockefeller. Oh! There is a small light at the end of the tunnel. It’s a really small light though, like a nightlight, but smaller. The teeny-tiny-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel news is that Bayer is phasing out Glyphosate in some of their products. YIPPIE! Drug the Water Supply, Destroy the Family, Reduce Fertility (1969)Rockefellers Population Council's publication states THE GOAL IS "ZERO GROWTH", and here's how they're going to achieve it...“Let us assume that today’s national family planning programs, mainly based on voluntary contraception, are not “enough” - when “enough” is defined not necessarily as achieving zero growth in some extended present but simply as lowering birth rates quickly and substantially. “Enough” begs the question of the ultimate goal and only asks that a faster decline in population growth rates be brought about than is presently being achieved or in prospect - and within the range of the possible, the faster the better” … “let us say that the proximate goal is the halving of the birth rate in the next decade or two…” - Bernard Berelson, President of the Population Council (1969).Take a journey with me, back to the 1960’s, shortly after the crazy Eugenics program was banned. If you haven’t read my post on Eugenics, it’s another dose of incredible, untold history that every American should read (and you Canadian’s and German’s too, you guys were just as bad as us). So, as I was saying, Eugenics had been recently outlawed because it had spun completely out of control. When it was banned the public assumed this meant the crazy sh*t was over… little did they know, while everyone was distracted by the (Tavistock) Hippie Movement and the Vietnam War, the population control agenda was just beginning. Prior to 1970, 30 heads of worldwide governments had already endorsed efforts to limit the population. The National Family Planning Program had already been adopted in a couple dozen countries and was activley supported by the United States, Sweden and many more (lemme guess, Canada and Germany too?) https://preview.redd.it/voac59g3x9yc1.png?width=655&format=png&auto=webp&s=d80e1589df04aae92f409ef86ef7a1e634d905f1 In early 1969, a 12-page document titled, “Beyond Family Planning” was published by Bernard Berelson, who was the proud president of the Rockefeller-founded Population In the document, Mr. Berelson writes, “Indeed, the ultimate goal of population policy - that is, zero growth - need not be agreed upon or even considered by officials who can agree upon the immediate goal of lowering growth by a specified amount by “as much as possible” within a period of years. And since there are always goals beyond goals, one does not even need to know what the ultimate goal is - only the direction in which it will be found. Would insistence now on the acknowledgement of an ultimate goal of zero growth advance the effort…”, “There is agreement, however, that the problem is of such magnitude and consequence that additional efforts are needed to reach a solution…” The document goes on to scheme ways to reduce the population, with the ultimate goal being “zero growth”. Today we are going to discuss many of the president of The Population Council’s ideas. IDEA #1: EXTENSIONS OF VOLUNTARY FERTILITY CONTROL“Liberalize induced abortion”. Berelson writes, “since it is voluntary it can be justified as a contribution to the effective personal freedom of individual couples”, then goes on to say, “with gradual effort it will be politically accepted.” And here we are today…https://preview.redd.it/081phpzbx9yc1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=378fbec2866f02803f4312c2e584edc4ebc24f17 Do you know who holds the patent on the Abortion Pill? YEP, the Population Council holds the patent for the Abortion Pill! IDEA #2: INVOLUNTARY FERTILITY CONTROL VIA THE WATER SUPPLYThey feel, because population growth is such a problem, the government should regulate births. A fertility control agent, designed to lower fertility to 75% below the current birth rate could be deployed. This chemical would be included in the water supply in urban areas and administered by “other methods” elsewhere.Adding these sterilants to staple food is another way to secretly dose people. - I find this to be exceptionally interesting because I recently published Vitamin A: Population Control - United Nations Evil Food Fortification Program, and in this article I show you that Vitamin A (a lab-made chemical that we are being duped into believing is a Vitamin), is a secret fertility reducing agent that is a teratogen. In addition to causing sterility, miscarriages and still-births, teratogens are responsible for 5% of ALL birth defects! https://preview.redd.it/qrrezrwix9yc1.png?width=713&format=png&auto=webp&s=58bdaa1d16ab1692f1fdddbf52b55b9db40f910c https://preview.redd.it/3p3r7rtjx9yc1.png?width=437&format=png&auto=webp&s=5794523092892c0ab25025a908bfe6d00774ce73 https://preview.redd.it/3jtyzqplx9yc1.png?width=1277&format=png&auto=webp&s=c5502e9a87ca0364bff93dc4016624e1277c987d Yet it is being pushed on women as prenatal vitamins, and women are literally gobbling them up. 24,000 reviews on a single product containing this evil chemical: Then, if the child survives through birth, whether born with birth defects or not, it is fed formula fortified with more Vitamin A, followed by baby food loaded with multiple Vitamins, then childhood Vitamins. If the child breastfeeds and the mother is taking Vitamins, both the mother and child are being dosed. Berelson goes on to question, “How are fertility control agents or sterilants to be administered on an involuntary mass basis in the absence of a central water supply or food processing system?”. Clearly, it is imperative that as many people as possible are forced to utilize a centralized water supply because that ensures the public is being dosed with fertility reducing agents. Regarding a centralized food processing system, this phrase stood out to me because I wrote this post called Poison Food Supply: History of Food Fortification - Adding Toxic Chemicals Under the Guise of “Vitamins”, in which I shared a true story of corruption, bribery and extortion, leading to our food supply being forever adulterated with chemicals. That tale begins with salt “fortification” in the 1920s. Once salt was allowed to be chemically treated, the chemical manufacturers saw a goldmine, so, before you knew it, milk needed chemical Vitamin A and D (rat poison, hazardous), then flour, then grains, then, quite literally, everything processed suddenly needed added Vitamins (the United Nations dictates which chemicals are to be used to keep us healthy). In 2024, it is impossible to find non-fortified flour at any of my local grocery stores. Every single one contains Vitamin A and a lengthy list of other Regarding the Beyond Family Planning document, they want to make sure people do not fall ill from the chemicals. I highly doubt this is because they care. I suspect it is because people would start asking questions then demanding this chemical concoction be removed from the water and food supply. IDEA #3: LICENSES TO HAVE CHILDRENThe idea was to have people collect ten certificates, which would then allow the person to have one child. Certificates could be earned, purchased or inherited. - Sounds like a f*cking video game or scavenger hunt. Disgusting.IDEA #4: TEMPORARY STERILIZATION OF ALL GIRLSA “time-capsule contraceptive” would be given to all girls, as well as women after delivery of a child. Reversing the time capsule would require governmental approval. This could also tie into the certificate system mentioned above.IDEA #5: PAY PEOPLE TO STAY ON CONTRACEPTIVESAnother idea was to give people a free gift, like a transistor radio. (Thought to self: Free gifts? Kinda like this?…)https://preview.redd.it/gnkgqdnqx9yc1.png?width=1283&format=png&auto=webp&s=ded499c0272e108e87c342641b7828fa3fa212d2 The Population Council went on to suggest that people could also earn bonuses for “non-pregnancy”. A lottery scheme was also proposed. Where have we heard of this before? Oh yes, now I remember… https://preview.redd.it/i4cnjm7tx9yc1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d8138020bf1308057e323e3663f455d08928c4a https://preview.redd.it/sjforl4ux9yc1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=8536c9a7c250d8bcb4dce6b2beb5e506374fb0d9 https://preview.redd.it/ulo6gs1vx9yc1.png?width=676&format=png&auto=webp&s=dcb623fabea7492af9919ee9c6acdc1b0410ba7b Now that I think about it, I know two women who had miscarriages after taking the jab. One was pregnant with twins at the time that she, and her husband, got vaccinated together. A couple weeks later, her husband died on the couch from a heart attack in the middle of the night. My family donated to the GoFundMe Campaign and purchased some items for a fundraiser raffle. Before the raffle took place, she miscarried one of the twins. The other was born with birth defects that December. The other woman who miscarried was my sister-in-law's sister, only three weeks after the booster. Doctors assured her it was not the vaccine and was “just stress from work”, because, you know, women weren’t designed to carry a baby and also deal with stress, they are just too fragile. Sh*t like this makes me want to walk into the nearest hospital and punch the first doctor I see in the face. Additionally, the Population Council discussed a plan to “offer incentives for vasectomy”. Vasectomy is considered a permanent form of male sterilization, and boasts a 99% success rate at forever-preventing pregnancy. IDEA #6: PENALTIESAs we saw with Covid, the government loves “the carrot or the stick” PSYOP. If you choose carrot, you quickly discover it’s a GMO carrot, fortified with Vitamin A. If you choose the stick, you discover it’s actually a Naginata.Either way, the government hates you and wants you to die (but only after Big Pharma can experiment on you for 40+ years; just pretty-please die before you reach the age of collecting a single benefit you spent your whole life paying in to). Regarding the Population Council document, the stick options they discussed include:
IDEA #7: RUN A PSYOP TO GET WOMEN OUT OF THE HOME AND INTO THE WORK FORCEA little personal story for you: When I was growing up in the 1980s, my father worked and my mother stayed home to raise three kids. We were by no means wealthy, but we always had utilities and food, without government assistance. If the old car needed repair, dad wrenched on it until he figured it out. Us kids got new clothing when our older cousins outgrew theirs. Other than using some canned fruits and vegetables, mom cooked every meal from scratch. We wasted nothing. We had stew made from scraps so often, that as an adult, I refuse to eat it; I have not had stew in 25+ years and still don’t want it, lol.Fast food was a very rare splurge and only purchased with a coupon combined with pre-planning to maximize savings; there was no such thing as ordering a Taco Bell Taco Supreme, you get a regular taco and add sour cream at home or you get nothing. When my little brother was pestering my parents about, “can we please take a vacation?”, they bought a used tent and set it up in the back yard for him. Other than that, our only vacation was within our home state of Michigan, once a year, to a place where my family got a steep discount because they knew the owner. Despite never having “the finer things in life”, my family did fine off one income… but I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to being envious of fellow students opening their brand-new-every-year lunch boxes to display fancy fruit roll-ups in shiny wrappers, juice boxes and Spaghetti-O’s in a flashy, new thermos, while I had yet another sandwich with 2 pieces of ham and a slice of cheese. My mom refused to cut off the crust because that’s wasteful, so I was the one kid with sandwich crust. Although we didn’t have what the cool kids had, we had a two-parent household, with a mom who was always home to clean our scraped knees, take our temperature when we were sick, whip us when we were bad, and who always had a homecooked meal on the table for dad when he got home from work. As an adult, I realize that this was far more important than fancy lunch box contents. I mention all of this because, somewhere on my shadow-banned Twitter account, I have this video explaining how, around the 1960’s, they planned to rig the system to ensure that, over time, it would become nearly impossible for a single income to support a family. I tried like hell to find this video, but my content is so shadowed that even I can’t locate it. Anyway, point being, they schemed to disrupt the childhood I grew up with and a key factor is getting women out of the home and into the workforce. In the document, they state that women could be forced to labor outside of the home, although they later point out that this could impact the ability of men to work, due to lack of job positions. This would then lead to men being at home, which doesn’t solve the problem of a stay-at-home-parent. We already saw these efforts to get women to abandon the household and join the workforce play out during World War II with Rosie the Riveter To this day, these efforts continue with the unending push for women to “break the glass ceiling” They define the Glass Ceiling as an invisible barrier designed to stop certain people (meaning everyone except white men) from reaching high positions in a company. Because the ceiling is invisible (just like viruses and vitamins), there is no conclusive way to show it has been broken, therefore the ploy can indefinitely continue. By the way, for those who don’t know, the reason women didn’t vote was because they didn’t want to, because the power of voting came with automatically being eligible to be drafted for war. Men wanted to protect women and women needed to be home to protect their children and household, not go fight a war. Another idea to get women out of the house was convincing them to extend their education by going to college (which in itself is a rabbit hole, far beyond propagandizing the youth. A large quantity of these colleges are basically front organizations for biological weapons programs. No, biological weapon does not mean “virus”. They state these efforts, combined with encouraging later age of marriage, “all contribute to population control in a significant way”. They also mention ending maternity leave would be a fantastic solution. IDEA #8: DIRECT MANIPULATION OF THE FAMILY STRUCTUREGetting women out of the home is only part of the population control plan. The other essential component is to, “introduce distractions into people lives to take them away from their family”. Think about what we have today; music that applauds infidelity, casual sex and the single life while degrading the opposite sex. We are bombarded with free pornography, cell phone games, social media, streaming services, not to mention the news media, which broadcasts endless chaos… all distractions.“Selective restricting of the family in relation to the rest of society”, is another idea the Population Council suggests. They go on to say, “social measures designed to affect the birth rate indirectly” have been proposed by the United Nations, the Small Family Norm Committee, the Central Family Planning Council, and have, “appeared in almost every issue of publications such as Family Planning News, Centra Calling and Planned Parenthood” IDEA #9: PROMOTE NOT BEING MARRIEDYou can’t directly tell people, “don’t get married because then you might have children”, so instead they choose to convince women that they don’t need a worthless man for anything:https://preview.redd.it/i5z969ufy9yc1.png?width=823&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d4ae746a4d717ab36f964750ed078d2d53aba77 https://preview.redd.it/tcmii4qgy9yc1.png?width=765&format=png&auto=webp&s=6aa7f4f5f08533f772574178c262a08a5384a04e https://preview.redd.it/ulntwfnhy9yc1.png?width=1418&format=png&auto=webp&s=cbc3a58499e3358f51fd086b4ddb6a14089efea7 https://preview.redd.it/z09f119jy9yc1.png?width=967&format=png&auto=webp&s=66c692485319d1d1d46957f92900b204a142e0a5 IDEA #10: PRESSURE RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONSLet me be clear, I have nothing against gay people whatsoever. I couldn’t care less what people do in the bedroom as long as it ain’t diddling kids. But reality is, being gay is wonderful for population control because two people of the same sex cannot procreate. People wrongly assume that Pride is pushed so hard because they want “Gay Rights”. This is blatantly false. They want No Rights for anyone, including gay people. They want “zero population growth”, and people who physically cannot procreate are far superior to a vasectomy that has a 1% failure rateRegarding the pressuring of religious organizations, now the Pope is endorsing same-sex relationships. https://preview.redd.it/llt7ftrly9yc1.png?width=1176&format=png&auto=webp&s=c35004e6c54f3f9fd984b5aca29eb238dcd836fd Then the Pope upped the ante and now supports Transgenderism, which is even better than being gay if you can convince people to completely lop off their kids wee-wee. https://preview.redd.it/7zjicq0oy9yc1.png?width=1046&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ddc5154766d8f4744e9245fd517320fd0995b03 Btw, in that Eugenic piece I wrote, they were performing “A-Sexualization” surgeries and sterilizing kids as young as six, in the 1940s! Is it ironic that today we have the Transgender movement targeting this same demographic? I think not. Was Eugenics actually the Transgender Movement 1.0? Regarding the topic of Abortion, the current stance from the Pope is pretty much, “it’s bad, but we should stay out of it because it’s a political issue”, which is a great way to play both sides. IDEA #11: ESTABLISH A USA FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF POPULATIONThe Beyond Family Planning document states The World Health Organization, UNICEF and UNESCO “have moved some distance toward family planning, if not population control, but only slowly”, this is why the new agency is imperative. This new entity would have the power to take “whatever steps are necessary to establish a reasonable population size”. … which is yet another attempt at resurrecting the Eugenics program, then feeding it crack cocaine and meth so it goes into overdrive. IDEA #12: INCORPORATE POPULATION CONTROL MATERIALS INTO SCHOOLSThe president of the Population Council says his is a great option because it is not expensive. Do we even need to discuss the filth being pushed in schools? Pride flags hanging in classrooms? Transgenderism and “Glass Ceiling” curriculum? Teaching everyone that all white men have oppressed them for all of history, meanwhile never teaching them that the real oppressor is the government? Those were the highlights of their ideas. THE MOST IMPORTANT PSYOP OF ALLDuring the document, they emphasize, more than once, how the public perceives the program is of utmost importance. They want to make sure it is not seen as population control but instead promoted as “freedom”…1 eye symbolism of course lol https://preview.redd.it/f2puv7oxy9yc1.png?width=1456&format=png&auto=webp&s=b1e0f375dfcaeed9d92b775e8825d1d1172df0b2 In the 1969 document, they go on to call people having multiple children ignorant. FINAL THOUGHTS:On page 7 they use the word “infanticide”, and in the next sentence ask, “How many innocent or unknowing men may be vasectomized for a fee?” before they are forced to stop this practice due to morals (damn morals, always getting in the way of everything! The NIH’s INFANTICIDE Experiments, took place at the exact same time as Eugenics. One of the most important admissions from this document is that they are unable to control a large population of refusers.I should close out this by mentioning that this document was authored primarily targeting India’s population, but, as you can see, the exact tactics Rockefellers Population Council fantasized about in 1969 came to be, across the world, as if in Lockstep. The government wants to kill you and your family? Regardless of where you live. |
2024.05.03 18:14 spartachilles Election of 1948 - Round 1 A House Divided Alternate Elections
The year is 1948, and America is at a crossroads. After nearly a decade of brutal warfare spanning from the plains of Russia to the jungles of Indonesia, the Second World War has finally come to an end. However, this has merely given way to a new slew of geopolitical issues as after a year of escalating tensions former President Alvin York unilaterally ordered the total nuclear annihilation of America’s erstwhile ally the German Empire. With the global order now thrown into chaos again by this betrayal of trust and the severe climatological effects it has entailed, a worldwide movement has arisen claiming that no one country can be trusted with the keys to atomic power and that the nations of the world must unite into a single federal government. However, there remain many skeptics unwilling to surrender the national sovereignty they so desperately fought for in the Second World War and even among its supporters many competing visions vie for recognition as the new path forward. Aside from the tumultuous international situation, domestic American politics remain as fraught with conflict as ever as the country slowly makes its transition back to a peacetime economy. To many, the economic dislocation arising from fighting a global war provides the perfect opportunity to shape the country’s economy to their vision, while pent-up labor unrest from the war has exploded into a nationwide phenomenon. submitted by spartachilles to Presidentialpoll [link] [comments] Federalist Reform Party Incumbent President Charles Edward Merriam Returning to the helm of his party 20 years after he was first its nominee, 73-year-old incumbent President Charles Edward Merriam now fights to preserve Federalist Reform after the successive collapses of two of its administrations. Beginning his career as a professor of political science, Merriam first achieved political office as a city alderman in Chicago shortly after the Second American Revolution. Channeling the widespread disgust at the rampant corruption in the state government, Merriam brought the local Solidarity and Federalist Reform Parties into an alliance that propelled him to the Illinois Governor’s Mansion in 1920. His following two terms in the office would turn him into a national superstar with his dramatic prosecution of corrupt teamster’s president Cornelius Shea. Thus well positioned at the Federalist Reform National Convention of 1928, Merriam led a radical transformation of the party in abandoning its past equivocation for the dictatorship in favor of a new vision of a powerful yet responsive federal government under the principles of Herbert Croly’s New Nationalism. However, his hopes for the presidency were dashed both that year and when his nomination was denied in 1932 in the face of the rising Formicist movement. Rather than making another attempt at the presidency, Merriam instead became one of the country’s inaugural Censors to help establish the precedents and principles that would guide the nation’s new auditory branch. Yet with President Alvin York seeking an experienced elder statesman to help guide him after rising to the office, Merriam accepted the offer of the vice presidency from York. But when York ordered the nuclear destruction of Germany without consulting even his own cabinet and subsequently resigned from office, Merriam was thrust into the presidency himself with a charge to repair a country left broken by this national crisis. In the months since then, Merriam has tirelessly worked to stabilize the national economy while soothing persistent labor unrest and has taken a keen interest in overseeing the reconstruction of a world left scarred by war to help repair America’s international reputation including overseeing the recent independence of Indonesia. In light of his advanced age, Merriam has suggested that he would retire at the end of his full term to avoid the risk of another premature presidential transition. Incumbent Vice President Edward J. Meeman Capturing the minds of many within the Federalist Reform Party as its chief advocate of the Atlanticist concept of a world federation, 58-year-old incumbent Vice President and former Governor of Tennessee Edward J. Meeman joins the ticket as a stark internationalist. Introduced to politics by his father who was a two-term state legislator, Meeman joined the Social Democratic Party after the Second American Revolution and applied himself to a career in journalism. However, as he rose through the ranks of the newspaper trade to become the editor of his own magazine, he switched his affiliation to the Federalist Reform Party due to his increasing disdain for the corruption and bossism of his former party. Becoming the editor and business manager of the Memphis Press-Scimitar at the same time as Louis Brownlow became the Governor of Tennessee, Meeman was an indefatigable crusader against the influence of Social Democratic Boss E.H. Crump and supporter of the transformation of the state into a laboratory of Federalist Reform democracy. Widely regarded as one of the state’s premier journalistic figures throughout the governorship of Gordon Browning, Meeman emerged as his natural successor when Browning ascended to the vice presidency. Taking charge of his state amidst the Second World War, Meeman chiefly preoccupied himself with mobilizing Tennessee for the war effort but also notably brought many of the state’s African Americans into his coalition by liberalizing civil rights laws as well as his efforts to improve environmental conservation in the state. Inspired in part by his own German heritage, Meeman emerged as a harsh critic of the atomic bombing of Germany and later became the standard-bearer for the Atlanticist movement within his party. Commanding a crucial section of the party in its National Convention, Meeman was tapped as Merriam’s running mate to win over his support for the President’s renomination and thereafter appointed by Merriam as his Vice President. However, intraparty dissatisfaction with Meeman’s nomination and Merriam’s alliance with world federalists in the party has led to a movement to instead put veterans leader and world federalism opponent John Thomas Taylor on the vice presidential line. Although the party sports many adherents to world federalism and remains deeply influenced by the movement, Merriam and the Federalist Reform Party at large have withheld their endorsement of a world government. Instead, Merriam has proposed the formation of a supranational international association to mediate international conflicts, promote the spread of democracy around the globe, and coordinate international action to rebuild after the war and meet the increasingly pressing challenges of global famines. Envisioning representation of all nations of the world but a special role for major powers such as the United States, United Kingdom, and China, Merriam has called for collective security and the establishment of enforceable international laws to be the basis of this organization. However, he has not shied away from suggesting the creation of international economic planning boards and even more ambitious proposals for a baseline common world citizenship and the creation of an international currency. Moreover, while Merriam has not endorsed the world federalist movement, he has not explicitly ruled it out either and promised to appoint delegates to an international convention to discuss the Atlanticist model of federation between Western-style democracies. With a Hansenist revolution having gripped the island nation of Haiti and threatening to spread communism in Latin America and beyond, Merriam has argued in favor of an intervention to restore the democratic government of Haiti and block it from exporting revolution. Claiming that the nationwide labor unrest has spiraled to the point of crisis, Merriam has strongly endorsed the National Labor Arbitration Act compelling unions and employers to submit to government arbitration. However, he has called for an even handed approach to such arbitration recognizing the needs of both labor and capital to ensure a harmonious economy. Furthermore, Merriam has called for a law to implement a corporatist scheme of industrial associations formed in partnership between employer and employee syndicates to steer economic policy such as wage and price levels. However, Merriam has refused to tolerate violent or criminal actions by labor unions and called for the strengthening of anti-racketeering laws as well as a federal criminal syndicalism law to outlaw the advocacy of violent revolution. To further support economic activity, Merriam has called for the proliferation of government planning agencies staffed by subject matter experts tasked with analyzing the economy for profitable, environmentally beneficial, or socially desirable investments and working with private industry towards their implementation. In addition, Merriam has supported the continued reduction of wartime taxes and tariffs alongside reductions in government spending to bring the budget into balance and limit inflation. Adhering to the longtime platform of his party, Merriam has also supported the implementation of a peacetime universal military training program. As a longtime opponent of political corruption, Merriam has promised to rid the federal government of graft and wasteful spending and pledged to bolster the powers and funding of the Council of Censors. Believing that the primary purpose of the national education system is to groom the next generation of leaders, he has called for the reformation of the Dewey Education Act towards heightening civic education and national identity. To implement his agenda, Merriam has also strongly supported an overhaul of the executive branch to further empower the presidency with added staff, full discretion to reorganize the federal government, and the line item veto on budgets passed by Congress. Solidarity Minnesota Senator Walter Judd Channeling the longtime legacy of internationalism in the party to stake its claim on the world federalist ideal, 49-year-old Minnesota Senator Walter Judd runs to fulfill the vision of previous party nominee Harold Stassen. Educated as a doctor, Judd left the country as a young man to escape the national tumult by becoming a medical missionary in China. Remaining there for many years as the head of increasingly large medical missions, Judd was a frontline witness to the atrocities of the Sino-Japanese War while caring for those brutalized by the Imperial Japanese Army. Upon his return to the United States, Judd delivered a testimony to the House of Representatives that was widely seen as pushing the country along its path toward declaring war on Japan. Launching his political career as a Representative from Minnesota soon thereafter, Judd rose to national prominence with his eloquent speeches in favor of aid and intervention on behalf of the Chinese. Holding a close relationship with Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen due to their close alignment on many issues, Judd nominated him for the presidency at the party’s 1944 convention, a favor which was repaid by Stassen’s loyal support in Judd’s campaign for the Senate in 1946. Since the end of the Second World War, Judd has been one of the principal Congressional leaders in the fight for the world federation while also maintaining his staunch support for a close Sino-American relationship. Florida Representative Mary McLeod Bethune Regarded as one of Solidarity’s most distinguished Congressional figures, 73-year-old Florida Representative Mary McLeod Bethune has been honored with the party’s vice presidential nomination to bolster its support with its Southern and more liberal wings. Born to a family only recently freed from slavery during the Fremont presidency, Bethune was determined from a young age to pursue education to overcome racial disparities she felt in her hometown. After a brief stint as a missionary to the Congo, Bethune became a teacher herself and moved to Florida to start a school for black girls. Even despite adversity such as her school being burned down by the Ku Klux Klan during the Second Civil War, Bethune remained committed to her vision of the future and later founded a successful college in Florida. Increasingly interested in the world of politics, Bethune joined a number of associations for the advancement of civil rights and women’s suffrage which brought her into contact with Solidarity. After serving as an advisor in various capacities for President George Foster Peabody, Bethune secured a place on the party’s list of representatives allocated seats under the national proportional representation system that she has maintained for over twenty years. Widely regarded as an expert in policy areas ranging from education to civil rights to commerce, Bethune has played an important role in many pieces of legislation throughout her career though she has regarded her co-authorship of the Fair Employment and Fair Education Acts as among her crowning achievements. With the support of the bulk of his party, Judd has called for the creation of an all-inclusive world federation uniting the nations of the world under a single government. The main goal of his proposed world federation would be the abolition of international war and international control over nuclear weapons and the development of nuclear technology. However, he has also supported the delegation of limited enumerated powers to the world federation in a manner similar to that used in the United States to allow it the ability to govern over international reconstruction, to guarantee the self-determination of peoples, and to support other crucial international objectives that may arise over time such as the budding exploration of outer space. As a believer in a special Sino-American relationship stemming from the efforts of President Tasker H. Bliss, Judd has argued that a strong relationship with Chinese Premier Chiang Kai-Shek is crucial for the establishment of the world federation. In the interim before the establishment of such a federation, Judd has vocally called for a heavy investment into foreign aid and technical assistance to support international reconstruction efforts and rebuild America’s international reputation, particularly emphasizing government-subsidized exports of foodstuffs as a way to simultaneously support American farmers while addressing food shortfalls abroad during the exceptionally cold year of 1948. As a devoted anti-imperialist, Judd has also called for the forced dismantlement of the colonial empires of the defeated powers in the Second World War as well as the application of diplomatic and economic pressure on the remaining colonial powers of Europe to oblige them to grant independence to their colonies as well. Believing that communism represents a threat to international democracy, especially as expressed in the Hansenist ideology, Judd has supported heavy American economic and military aid to prevent its spread in Europe and Latin America though he has opposed direct military intervention. Arguing that inflation poses the gravest risk to the livelihood of the American people by degrading their purchasing power, Judd has made combatting it his chief domestic political priority. Believing price controls to be liable to distort the free market by inducing shortages in crucial goods and thus supporting their removal as soon as practicable, Judd has instead called for a substantial reduction in government spending to eliminate the federal deficit and clamp down on inflation. However, he has opposed making cuts to popular programs such as the social insurance system or educational aid and even supported an expansion of public housing spending to address damage and shortages from the war. Instead, Judd has concentrated on the drawdown of wartime expenditures, the elimination of redundant federal agencies, and a reduction in public works spending. While acknowledging the need for a social safety net and reasonable regulations to avoid monopolistic practices, Judd has remained a disciple of the free market overall in ensuring the prosperity of the American people and criticized his opponents as seeking to stifle the nation’s economic growth with excessive regulation. To this end, he has opposed the National Labor Arbitration Act as excessive government interference in the national economy. Convicted in his belief in equality among the races from his experiences abroad, Judd has strongly endorsed federal civil rights legislation to finally end the practice of segregation in all public accommodations, ensure diverse representation in juries, and outlaw discrimination in employment. Additionally, Judd has endorsed the removal of racial quotas and other immigration restrictions still enforced from Populist-era laws to allow immigration into the United States by people from around the world. Popular Front New York Representative Vito Marcantonio Successful in bringing together the Social Democratic and Socialist Workers Parties under a joint ticket and alliance agreement known as the “Popular Front”, 45-year-old New York Representative Vito Marcantonio has thus become the face of a newly united American left. Born to humble beginnings in an immigrant family residing in a crime-wracked neighborhood of Harlem, Marcantonio excelled at academics despite the challenges of his youth and began a successful career in law soon after his graduation. Building his reputation by taking on cases defending workers wronged by their employers and protestors arrested during demonstrations against the Mitchel presidency, Marcantonio built crucial connections within the Social Democratic Party that propelled him to an appointment as a United States Attorney and later election to the House of Representatives. While quick to make a name for himself first with his opposition to President Howard P. Lovecraft and later for his opposition to the declaration of war upon Japan, Marcantonio always remained sensitive to the needs of his constituents and returned to Harlem every weekend to solve their governmental problems and thereby earned their undying loyalty with every election. With his initial opposition to the war tempered by his loyalty to the Social Democratic Party and flexibility regarding supporting certain war measures, Marcantonio found himself uniquely positioned to earn the joint nomination of the Social Democratic and Socialist Workers Party and thereby take a leading role in uniting them electorally under the Popular Front while maintaining their formal political independence. However, while he is nominally the candidate of the united American left and enjoys some support from former Syndicalists, the most die-hard followers of communist icon Joseph Hansen remained opposed to Marcantonio and have sought to write in their imprisoned leader instead. Washington Governor Harry E. B. Ault With the Popular Front agreement demanding the nomination of a Socialist Workers politician for the vice presidency, 64-year-old Washington Governor Harry E. B. Ault stands as the candidate of the more radical side of the electoral alliance. Born to a family of committed socialists, when he was a teenager Ault moved into a blossoming cooperative socialist colony in Washington state. Serving as a press secretary for the ill-fated 1908 presidential campaign of Eugene V. Debs, Ault became a wanted man during the Grant dictatorship and witnessed the death of his political mentor Hermon F. Titus at the hands of Grantist Blueshirts. Surviving until after the Second American Revolution, Ault became the editor of Seattle's premier labor-owned newspaper, the Union Record. Thus, he became a central figure in the Seattle General Strike opposing the influence of William Z. Foster and urging a pragmatic balance of direct and political action. Appointed as a United States Marshal by President Frank J. Hayes as an olive branch to pacifists amidst the rapid split of the Social Democratic Party over the issue of the Second World War, Ault was placed into the impossible situation of enforcing laws such as the Alien Registration Act that he found fundamentally unjust and resigned his position soon after. Nonetheless, this service was enough for him to be marked for arrest by his former employee Anna Louise Strong when she took leadership over the Seattle commune during the Syndicalist Revolt against President Howard Hughes. After a brief spell of Federalist Reform control over the state following the suppression of the revolt, Ault led the Socialist Workers Party to sweep elections in the state in 1944. Although he drew some consternation from his allies for his pragmatic choice to avoid excessively obstructing the war effort in order to stave off another federal intervention in state politics, Ault nevertheless became a national voice for the war-weary searching for a quick end to the war. Arguing that the formation of a world government is the only possible path to ensure world peace, Marcantonio has strongly endorsed the creation of a worldwide federal union. While supporting the delegation of powers to control nuclear power and international armaments, Marcantonio has also gone a step further than his opponents in suggesting that the federation be granted a relatively broad power to provide for the “general welfare” and regulate “international commerce” in a model similar to that of the United States. Seeing leftist governments abroad as the principal allies of the United States in forming a world federation, Marcantonio has called for closer relations with Aneurin Bevan’s United Kingdom and Alvaro de Albornoz’s Spain while calling for more support of leftist movements in the occupied countries of the Pact of Steel. Curiously, Marcantonio has also reportedly exchanged letters with Italian world federalist Santi Paladino and Sicilian political leaders regarding the annexation of Sicily to the United States as a precursor to the world federation. Strictly opposed to the European colonial empires, Marcantonio has called for their immediate dismantlement and the creation of new nations under the principle of self-determination. Additionally, Marcantonio has harshly criticized his opponent’s proposals for intervention against international communist movements as warmongering efforts that would needlessly spill the blood of workers. Attacking the National Labor Arbitration Act as being designed to suppress the right of workers to strike, Marcantonio has campaigned upon its repeal while suggesting that his administration would back the efforts of workers to achieve increases in wages and reductions in working hours as recompense for their wartime sacrifices. Additionally, Marcantonio has called for the nationalization of monopolistic industries such as banking, shipping, electric power, gas, and oil, as well as the nationalization of any industries dependent on government purchases with the defense industry chief among them, arguing that they exploit both the consumers they service as well as the workers they employ. In light of the struggles of the American healthcare system during the deadly Japanese biological attack of bubonic plague and the continued issue of homelessness stemming from destruction in the Bakuhatsu, Marcantonio has called for the creation of a socialized system of national healthcare as well as an ambitious public housing program to guarantee homes for the poor and dispossessed. To fund his extensive governmental proposals, Marcantonio has called for a vast reduction in defense spending as well as the maintenance of many wartime taxes as well as stiffer capital gains, excess profits, land value, and estate taxes. Meanwhile, attacking postwar inflation as the result of unbridled corporate greed, Marcantonio has supported the maintenance and extension of broad price and rent controls. Having built a reputation as a champion of immigrant and minority communities in his district, Marcantonio has supported federal civil rights legislation to bar segregation in housing, employment, and public accommodations as well as an opening of the American immigration system.
