What a trip! Photo dump and some thoughts for other travelers
What a great time in Manual Antonio. My Airbnb was basically on the border of the park. Probably less than 50 meters to the park entrance. Every day I hung out with monkeys, watched basilisks run across the water, and saw some amazing di̶n̶o̶s̶a̶u̶r̶s̶ birds. At one point I had a family of white tail deer within 10 feet of me, a black iguana within 5 feet of me, and a capuchin monkey within three feet of me. The photos of the capuchin monkey you see are not zoomed in. She ditched her troop and crossed the creek to hang out. I am in absolute awe at their intelligence and emotional ability. Her troop kept moving and when she realized they had left her, she got noticeably upset at not being able to find them. She kept looking from me to the jungle. Eventually I saw one of the babies playing in the stop of the palm. I pointed them out to her and she looked distraught about how far away they were. Then she sat on the rock next to where I was standing and clapped her hands at me. Clearly she thought I owed her something for her time and wasn't happy when I wasn't going to give her anything. It was the most amazing experience of my life with an animal, and I've befriended an elephant. The squirrel monkeys would come by my apartment every afternoon. I would walk around the corner and into the jungle, and we would just watch each other watching each other. And they stayed there playing and watching until I would leave. Then they'd continue their patrol of searching for food and avoiding capuchin.
I went to Costa Rica for the people, the culture, and the animals and everything exceeded my expectations. Ticos are amazing people. Kind and friendly. Everyone has jokes and you or someone in your group is probably going to be the butt of one. It's like an entire country of dads. They're hilarious and I love them. Did I mention kind? My flight home got canceled because of storms in Dallas. When I pulled up a day late to return the car, I told the guy what happened and that I was told to just drop it off and they'll charge me an additional day. Not a problem. He said that he saw a $45 charge for the extra day, which would be $51 with taxes or fees or whatever. And my guy went in and put a $45 credit on my bill and wiped out the charge. I love that dude.
Shout out to the waiter at El Sitio in Cartago who refused to serve me an Imperial until I pronounced it right.
Honestly by the end of the trip it felt like home. I was acclimated to the heat, comfortable driving and kept thinking about whether I could afford to retire there on a meager income.
Some tips or thoughts for other people going.
The tap water is safe and delicious. Don't go down there and waste money to create a bunch of plastic trash. When you ask for water in a restaurant or soda, ask for "un vaso con aqua" otherwise they're probably going to bring you a bottled water because you're a tourist.
You always hear, "It's expensive there." No it's not. This is coming from privileged gringos who think because the people are poor, they should be able to eat and travel dirt cheap. You will spend far more staying in a US city for a week than you will in Costa Rica. The expense of Costa Rica is mostly upfront. Airfare, hotels/airbnbs, and transportation are the biggest expenses. Even then. I got very nice king hotel suites for under $150 in San Jose. The same or less than you'd expect to pay here in the States. Once you're in country, what you spend is on you. You can go on $200 excursions. Or you can take cheaper tours and chill. You can go eat breakfast at an upscale restaurant and pay 14,000 - 20,000 colones. Or you can go to a soda and pay 6,000. It's all up to you. I went down with $1700 to spend, and even with the added cost from a flight cancelation, I came back with over $500. And honestly I could have come back with more, but some opportunities came up that I didn't want to say no to.
Driving in CR. If you've driven in other Latin American countries then you might be in for a shock. It's a lot more like driving in the US than some place like Ecuador. Traffic in San Jose is insane, but manageable. I don't get the complaints some make about the roads. Most tourists are going to be driving on highways that are pretty well maintained. Even the back roads in and around pueblos aren't bad. They're just unpaved gravel with the no more potholes than you'd expect on any dirt road in the US. You can drive at night in the city and around tourist areas. Don't try and drive outside of those areas at night. Costa Rica is dark like no place else I've been. I don't even remember seeing the stars there. It's definitely not safe. If you've never driven in Latin America, you'll do ok, but the traffic in SJ may be a bit much. Unless you've driven on around some plafe like LA/Baltimore/DC at rush hour. Then you kind of know what to expect.
Converting money to USD. Too easy. Replace the comma with a decimal and double the number. 10,000 colones is $20.00.
Speaking to people. A lot of people know English. Especially most of the people you'll interact with. I know enough Spanish to get myself around, but it's too easy to just say "hablo un poco español," and everyone will be happy to try and help. Just pull out your translation app and you're good. I also found that Ticos were happy to help me with my spanish and many had questions about English they wanted to ask. I didn't know how badly I wanted someone to ask me to define "cocky" until Chad at Donde Alex asked me.
Go to restaurants when they aren't crowded. These places can get busy, and going when they're slow is a totally different experience. Like I said, Ticos are awesome people and interacting with the waiters, cooks, and the souvenir vendors on my way to the beach were some of the best times I had there.
Go visit. Have fun. Interact with the people there. And no preocupados. Todo está bien en Costa Rica. Pura vida✌️and muchas gracias to all the Ticos and Ticas who made my trip special.

2024.05.19 19:50 doggo_bestie List of things to do with your kids this summer.

I noticed a lot of people are starting to look for things to do with their kids for the summer. I just finished this list and thought I’d share. Took me 3 hours. I’m sure it’s not comprehensive, feel free to add anything you see missing. Keep in mind, this list was made for a 6-year-old autistic child, and I was trying to avoid outdoor stuff and touristy strip stuff, although some made it on the list. Also, sorry for the bad handwriting.

Going through me and my siblings childhood collection - part 2; McDonald’s
My family loved going to McDonald’s (like a 90s family does) which is why there are so many. The craziest part to me is that me and my siblings didn’t crack them all open! I am tempted to open some up but I also think it’s kind of cool to have sealed stuff from 20+ years ago

Exploring the Ruins of Volubilis
Immerse yourself in history and explore the ruins of Volubilis like a time traveler, with its ancient stones standing as silent sentinels of the past.
Located near Meknes in north-central Morocco, this archaeological site offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience culture and discover history.
Wander around and your gaze will be drawn to impressive structures such as the basilica, triumphal arch, and forum, all covered with intricate mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology. Though many of these have been damaged over the centuries by earthquakes or looters, they still provide a fascinating insight into life during Roman times.
In addition to the grandeur of its ruins, Volubilis holds some other secrets too; it's home to several unique species of plants that aren't found anywhere else in North Africa.
As you wander through the olive groves and palm trees, keep an eye out for lilies called 'thousand flowers', a type of wild iris which blooms between April and May each year. The sight is truly magnificent!
Volubilis may not be as large or well-preserved as some other historical sites in Morocco, but it certainly deserves a visit for those interested in discovering more about this nation's past.
From its glorious monuments to its flora and fauna – there's something here for everyone who loves learning about ancient cultures!

2024.05.19 06:37 mark54398 May 14 - May 17 trip report

Wow, such great fun!
As others had advised, traffic and parking was generally manageable as these dates were Tues - Fri. Driving from place to place was generally possible with a couple caveats.
Things were certainly getting busy when I left late morning on Friday but that's Friday.
Tues - Thurs, the main issues I had with parking were in Curry Village and the Welcome Center complex (also has a restaurant and general store). These two place are a hot mess, at least in the afternoons (I never went there in the morning other than 7am for the mist trail and that was fine). I did manage to find parking there a couple times but had to circle around a bit and If this is what it looks like in mid-May, it must be an absolute nightmare during the the truly busy season.
If you're trying to grab a relatively quick meal, I don't recommend the pizza deck or the burrito place in Curry Village. They don't seem to be in a much of a hurry over there, even when there aren't many customers there. I eventually found a cafeteria (7 tents pavilion) style joint and it was quick to get food and plenty of seating (on a Thursday around 5pm).
Lower Yosemite falls and Bridalveil falls are kind of a paradox. Both involve getting wet. Refreshing in the afternoon, not so much in the morning, though mornings will be warming up. But, parking is harder in the afternoon, especially for Lower Yosemite.
The main parking lot for Bridalveil Falls may be impractical to get to at any time other than early morning / late afternoon because there is a road crew flagger operation running (one lane road) at the junction of Southside Drive and Highway 41 from sometime in the morning to like 3pm, which basically means sitting through that flagger wait to make the turn into the lot.
I ended up parking at at the El Capitan viewpoint a bit further down Southside Drive, which has a large amount of parking on both sides of the road (late morning on Friday, I still found a spot). There is a sign on the south side of the road for the Bridalveil Falls trail. It's a longer walk than the main lot for the falls but still less than a mile round trip.
I was so happy Glacier Point road was open. It is totally worth the drive up there, seeing the valley and beyond from high up above. One tip I got from a woman at the visitors center is that Washburn point is better sunrise viewing and Glacier Point is better for sunset viewing. I made two trips up there - once for sunset and once for sunrise and on the sunset trip, with it being light enough to see everything when I arrived it was obvious as to why. But when I drove up to Washburn Point the next morning for sunrise, I was the only car there and there were lots of cars driving right past heading to Glacier Point (5 minutes away at the end of the road). That's exactly why I'd have done had I not gotten the tip and my first trip up was for sunrise.
Last thought - Vernal falls is sooooooo worth it, I saw a double rainbow created by the waterfall. It was the highlight of the trip for me.
Shuttle buses aren't currently running to the Mist / John Muir trailhead, so that adds an extra 2 miles roundtrip (flat ground) to the hike.

2024.05.19 02:18 MyBtflDrkTwstdFntsy Recommendations for hidden gems?

Hi everyone,
TL;DR: As the title suggests, I am looking to visit a hidden gem or a more quiet area with plenty of history, culture, and activities around August. I am thinking about a beachy area and thought about Cantabria/Asturias/Basque Country (basically the north of Spain). Open to all suggestions, not just the north
For context, I visited Spain for the first time 3 weeks ago, staying for 10 days around the Madrid area and I loved it (So much so that I am thinking about continuing my studies there as I have Portuguese citizenship). For those 10 days, I spent seven in Madrid and took day trips to Segovia, Toledo, and El Escorial with a family member living in Madrid. It was my first time in Europe and I wanted to absorb everything as if I were a local, so I walked everywhere, got lost in certain streets/districts, talked to locals, went to a Real Madrid game by myself (lifelong Madridista and my grandfather was a huge Madridista), and tried to find my own restaurants (through locals' recommendations and recommendations from a family member living in Madrid). However, I think that one needs to stay for long periods for big metropolitan cities like Madrid and Barcelona to fully absorb everything. Again, I spent 7 days in Madrid and felt like I had not seen absolutely everything.
I currently do not know how long I can go to Spain for but I am thinking about returning with my mom (she came with me to Madrid and loved it too) and possibly inviting my childhood friend (not sure about his interests in terms of traveling so I do not want to disappoint) for around a week to 10 days. Because I'm not sure I can spend an entire week in a city to get immersed, I'd like to get recommendations for smaller, quiet beach towns/historical towns where there won't be *that* many tourists or maybe cities that can be visited for less than 5-6 days.
My mom received an invitation from an old friend who lives in Cantabria but I'm not sure if there's much to do (Santander is beautiful, tho). Other ideas would be town-hopping in the North, so Cantabria, Asturias, and the Basque Country? Another idea is to go to Valencia and maybe the beach towns around?
I'd like to save Andalucia for a future trip because I want to go there for at least 3 weeks. Apart from my lifelong obsession with Madrid, I've always wanted to visit the South and I feel that a week is way too little. Although if you think it can be done in the time frame I mentioned, recommend me some places to visit in Andalusia besides Sevilla, Malaga, Cordoba, etc
ALSO ** I'm from Miami, so the high temperatures aren't a problem - it's currently around 105F here. Don't worry about that

2024.05.19 00:36 numthots Oyster Oyster, *, Washington, DC

Recently went to Oyster Oyster, a 1-star restaurant in Washington, DC. The restaurant is relatively small — they only serve parties 4 or smaller, and there were maybe a dozen tables, mostly two-tops.
The restaurant is "oyster-tarian", which is to say, a fully vegetarian restaurant with an optional oyster course. My wife and I don't eat non-fish seafood, so we skipped the oyster, but found the meal delightful.
Personal ranking: 4/5. Food/service exceeded expectations. I'd recommend, go back, but not rush. Examples: El Cielo and Rasika tasting menus in Washington, DC. Because the menu is pretty seasonal, I'd probably choose a late summer or early fall reservation for my next visit.
Service: Service was really wonderful. This is definitely a fast-paced restaurant. Because of the size, there's basically no space between the door and the host stand, we were basically seated immediately. They don't give you the food menu until you're on your way out, and it's a set tasting menu, so food starts pretty immediately after seating and selecting (or not) wines/non-alcoholic beverages. Servers are fairly casual, but kind, knowledgable, and fun. I wouldn't say we felt doted on, but it's also a small enough place that a server is almost always in view. The meal was also quick: we were in and out of there in 90 minutes, despite it being a five course meal. That said, it wasn't rushed — and I don't think their reservations are explicitly stated for 90/120 minutes.
Wine: I'm not a huge wino, but we split the pairing and I honestly really enjoyed the wines! One bubbly, one white, two dinner reds, and a dessert red. The two reds were both unusually light, and we quite liked them. We didn't see the pairing list, but they emailed it to us after our reservation, which was nice. Pairing was $85 pre-tax/pre-tip, with a $15 surcharge for us to split it. Every pour came with an in-depth description of varietal, terroir, winemaker, distillation process, and a "why" Oyster Oyster chose to offer that particular wine.
Food: The food was delicious, and the overall meal was filling but not overwhelmingly so. The meal is light on the protein, which I often look for in a meal, but that honestly wasn't much of an issue night-of.
Would recommend! I think it's gotten significantly easier to get a reservation than in years past, and it was a fun time!
Edit: I apparently don't know how to do a gallery and text.

2024.05.19 00:11 Master-Quantity-1490 Cusco Traditional Markets, History, Location and Tips

Cusco Traditional Markets, History, Location and Tips
A notable aspect of Peruvian culture lies in its vibrant markets, and Cusco is no exception. If you haven’t experienced any of Cusco’s markets (or any across South America), you’re in for a sensory overload.
Take, for instance, the renowned San Pedro market in Cusco. Here, you’ll encounter endless rows of stalls and quaint shops brimming with a plethora of goods, ranging from fresh produce to traditional remedies. Amidst the bustling chaos of sights and scents, vendors eagerly vie for your attention, touting their wares. Additionally, many markets spill over into expansive outdoor areas where you can indulge in a meal, snag souvenirs, or simply soak in the lively atmosphere.
These markets serve as the backbone of everyday life for locals, offering affordable provisions and a prime spot for souvenir hunting in Cusco.
Cusco’s markets are a must-see for visitors to Peru, offering a glimpse into daily life that’s truly unique. Even if you’re not in the market for anything specific, they provide unparalleled opportunities for people-watching, Peru Amazon Trips will show you how to reach all of the Traditional markets that are located in Cusco’s vicinity taking the Main square as a reference for your starting point.San Pedro Market
This sprawling market has become a tourist hotspot (mostly because of local agencies recommendations), renowned for its wide array of alpaca clothing and souvenirs alongside stalls selling fruits, vegetables, juices, cheese, and meat.
Make sure to explore the rear section of this expansive hall, where you’ll find some of the most affordable lunch options in the city. However, a crucial tip is to opt for the busiest kitchen to minimize the risk of foodborne illness.
Location of the San Pedro market: situated near Plaza San Francisco, accessible by passing through the arch adjacent to Iglesia Santa Clara.

Wanchaq market

The Wanchaq market, familiar to locals in Cusco, is another noteworthy option.
Similar to other larger markets in the city, it offers a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, cheese, and meat, as well as clothing, kitchenware, and likely any other essentials you might require.
Location of the Wanchaq market: situated near Avenida Tullumayo (Parallel Street to Avenida del Sol).

Artisan’s market

For distinctive keepsakes, visit the Artisan’s Market in Cusco, where you’ll find a variety of items including alpaca sweaters, jewelry, pottery, and other crafts.
Experience the thrill of bargaining with fewer crowds of tourists.
Location of the Artisan’s market: Avenida El Sol, in front of the fountain known as the “Paccha” (which is actually the translation of fountain in Quechua)

San Blas Market

This is a much smaller market situated in San Blas’s pretty neighbourhood, northeast of the Plaza de Armas. It’s a far less touristy location and only sells staples such as fruit, vegetables, cheese and meat. However, it still makes for an interesting introduction to Cusco’s markets if you’re in the area.
The San Blas square around the corner also hosts an artisan’s market at weekends with great Peruvian souvenirs to check out.
Location of San Blas Market: San Blas Market is located in the San Blas neighborhood of Cusco, Peru. At the end of Lucrepata’s main street.

Vinocanchón’s Market

Situated at the southern edge of the city, just before reaching the city limits, this market stands as one of the largest and most comprehensive in town. Serving as a vital resource for individual households, restaurants, and small businesses in this part of Cusco, it offers a diverse range of products beyond fresh produce.
It’s a traditional market where encountering another foreign visitor is unlikely.
Location of Vinocanchón’s Market: This market is located almost at the end of the city, you can reach it by going to the disctrict’s stadium in San Jerónimo’s neighbourhood.

Tips before you head to any of these markets on your own

#1 Refrain from making immediate purchases.
Cusco’s markets overwhelm with choices. Often, identical items line neighboring stalls.
Whether it’s alpaca sweaters or cooking utensils, explore the entirety of the market before committing.
Expect initial high prices; bargaining is customary. Indicate disinterest, then negotiate for the best deal.
#2: Be vigilant with your belongings
Always look after your own goods, specially at crowded spots like San Pedro market, prone to pickpocketing due to tourism.
Stay cautious amid distractions while safeguarding valuables like cameras and phones. Consider wearing them on the front and utilizing internal pockets for money.
Keep a copy of your passport; store the original securely
https://preview.redd.it/hfmdws2sd91d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f1effa53b4172bf891e9a64e31937dadd512fe3
.#3: Dedicate some time to exploring the local markets in Cusco to uncover a wide array of goods.
You’ll find that these markets offer a diverse selection of items, with San Pedro market standing out as the largest and most central, boasting a variety of clothing, souvenirs, kitchen supplies, and groceries.
Meanwhile, San Blas market, though smaller, exudes charm and provides a range of fruits, vegetables, and other grocery items. Wanchaq, while similar to San Pedro in terms of offerings, provides a less touristy atmosphere, making it ideal for mingling with locals.
Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by the discoveries you’ll make in and around these markets. Whether you’re in search of shoelaces, USB drives, birthday candles, Tupperware, or nail polish, you’ll likely find it here.
#4: Consider hygiene when buying in the market
Keep in mind that the market is where locals typically shop for groceries. For many travelers, exploring local markets can be an eye-opening experience, as they offer a variety of goods, including raw meat.
Unlike supermarkets where meat is often neatly packaged, in Cusco’s markets, it’s common to find meat being sold freshly cut. While this method may not be the most hygienic, it’s practical. While seeing raw meat may be off-putting, exercise caution when purchasing or consuming it.
This caution extends to eating at the markets, where hygiene standards aren’t always guaranteed. Seek advice from your accommodation or tour guide on which stalls to trust, or opt for busy food stands with high turnover to ensure freshness and minimize the risk of foodborne illness.
#5: Bring a bag with you.
It’s a common practice for locals to carry their own (reused) plastic bags. When you make purchases in Peru, you’ll likely receive a bag to start with (although it’s advisable to travel with a compact bag regardless).
By bringing your own bag to the market, you can reduce the amount of plastic you use during your time in Peru.

6: Understanding Baby Alpaca Wool

Many tourists visiting Peru are eager to purchase soft alpaca sweaters featuring charming Andean designs. However, when a vendor mentions “baby alpaca” wool, it’s important to clarify the term. Contrary to what some may imagine, it doesn’t refer to wool taken from recently sheared baby alpacas shivering in the Andean cold.

2024.05.18 20:46 dancew0nder Etiquette in restaurants for solo travelers

I'm American, and travelling in El Salvador solo right now and am a little uncertain about etiquette around eating. I see it might be considered rude to leave immediately after eating and you're supposed to stay and chat but..I'm alone so I have no one to chat with. Also what's the etiquette for paying? Do I ask for the check? Or go up to the counter and pay when I'm done eating?
Also is it rude for me to be on my phone constantly while at a restaurant? I am looking up where to go next, or using Google translate usually.
Thanks!! Also this country is beautiful and I'm enjoying myself immensely 😊

2024.05.18 19:35 portorock80 Mom and Pop grocery stores

I'm looking for the name and city of local mom and pop grocery stores in San Diego county. We've been to several in the El Cajón/La mesa area like Vine Ripe and Kaelin (I believe is the name), but are looking for other similar stores that have hot food options or sandwich delis that are good quality.
My family and I have lived in the south bay for twenty years and are very familiar with the restaurants and Mom and Pop grocery stores out here.
Thanks San Diego Family!

2024.05.18 11:43 pronyo001 Tucson 1.6 GDI vélemények

Sziasztok!

2024.05.18 08:45 Expensive-Ad5314 I don't want to go to Lebanon either

I'm fully Lebanese and lived in Lebanon for 20 years, but I have been living in France for the past 6 years. It's not that I hate Lebanon, but I have strong negative feelings of frustration against it. It's nothing related to the economic situation, as I am fortunate enough to come from a wealthy family who was mildly impacted by it or the explosion of the port of Beirut.
I was never able to integrate into the Lebanese culture. My parents raised me like a French kid, and I was almost never exposed to the Lebanese culture. I was extremely sheltered to the point where, a couple of years ago, I thought that "Tayar el Wataneh el 7or" → "Tayar = Tiyara" → "Tayar = armée de l'air" → "Ouwet = armée de la terre."
I never enjoyed life in Lebanon. People say Lebanese people are warm, but in all objectivity, I find us to be culturally rude, envious, and two-faced. They say nice things to your face and spit false rumors behind your back.
There are many things that go against my personal values that are part of the Lebanese culture: homophobia, bullying, French-bashing, lack of education in the general population, corruption, greed. The list of flaws is endless, and most of you are probably aware of them. Maybe some of you are able to ignore them, but I can't.
There's also my personal experience of being raised in an upper-middle-class environment. To be honest, I don't understand how Lebanon can function as a society. My entourage hates Muslims. By hates, I don't mean dislikes them, I mean actually hates them, like they would be okay with/wanting Lebanese Muslims to be unalived.
I find people to be too noisy, uncivilized in public, hysteric sometimes. It's also culturally okay/encouraged to be invasive and not respect people's boundaries. I'm sorry but I don't want to do small-talk with a random taxi-driver who will try to guess my religion and where I come from based on my family name, or friends/family members who don't leave you alone when asked to and will comment on every aspect of your life even if you ask them to keep their unsolicited opinions to themselves.
My family wants me to visit this summer, as they have been the ones visiting me for the last 6 years, and I have to see my grandparents who are getting old. I am dreading the idea of going back because I will die of boredom. I have no friends in Lebanon and dislike parties or hiking. I don't know how to drive nor want to in Lebanon (the lack of public transports is horrible!). I enjoy the boring Parisian style of tourism where I jump from a café/restaurant to another and see museums and temporary expositions.
