2024.05.20 09:00 MingusTheClown RACHEL Z WITH OMAR HAKIM - June 10, 2024 at Yoshi's, Oakland

RACHEL Z WITH OMAR HAKIM June 10, 2024 at Yoshi's, Oakland
The world of contemporary jazz guitarist Ray Obiedo is an energetic and hypnotically rhythmic soundscape. It shows off the passion, flavor and style of the Northern California region that nurtured the musical soul of this fascinating and prolific jazz artist. Although Obiedo didn’t begin seriously studying guitar until his last year in high school, he had already been deeply influenced by artists like Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. He became totally focused on mastering his instrument and learning the craft of songwriting throughout the 80’s and 90’s, and his career as a jazz artist began taking form. Obiedo has performed with many of jazz’s most celebrated stars including legendary organist Johnny “Hammond” Smith, trombonist Julian Priester, Azteca with Pete and Sheila Escovedo The opportunity to play alongside the great horn masters Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley, and Maceo Parker from James Brown’s iconic funk ensembles was a true privilege.Touring the world with jazz superstar Herbie Hancock in 1978-79 was the gig of a lifetime! .As a session player, Obiedo’s guitar work has appeared on albums by artists as diverse as Grover Washington Jr, Lou Rawls, George Duke, Herbie Hancock, Sheila E, Brenda Russell, and The Whispers. Eventually launching his own solo recording career in 1989 releasing 5 CD’s on the Windham Hill Jazz label in 1989. In 2015 Obiedo started his own Rhythmus Records label and has released five contemporary jazz albums to date.

2024.05.20 02:36 NiceAndTipsyTopside The legacy of asterisks: the illegitimate 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2010 titles.

One day these titles will be dismissed entirely. The same way 60s Celtics dynasty is dismissed as "plumbers in an 8 team league" which greatly colors how people rate Russell.
NBA mythology created fairy tales out of NBA controversy in the 2000s. How will that change over time as more and more people poke holes in popular league narratives?
The Laker 3peat has a complicated legacy of corruption under the David Stern mafia and his ring of crooked refs embroiled in illegal gambling. After the Kobe fanatics die away and that era of Laker narratives fall apart, how do you think this period of NBA mythology will be reassessed?
Will Rasheed and Webber get any credit back after being robbed of the opportunity to be the best players on a Finals team?

2024.05.20 02:01 TheRandomMan79 So I rewatched the giggle…

I rewatched the giggle and then the Pyramid of Mars and this is my takeaway.
The one who waits is the talk of the town, but everyone is misremembering just who they are. They’re NOT a member of the pantheon, they’re somebody within the universe who the toymaker would not play a game with. The guardians are wiped out, the master is in a tooth, omega is outside the universe, Susan is not that scary. That leaves 2 options in my mind… Suetekh, or the Valeyard.
Now argument for Sutekh. -The poor dude has been stuck sitting around in a tunnel for 10000 years waiting for death. I’d argue he’s waiting. -He is a being so powerful the time lords were scared of him. -Had an occult following that could include the likes of the meep, Susan triad etc. -He tried to use the Tardis to escape before (all the Susan Triad stuff (S. Triad, Tardis)).
Now if it isn’t Sutekh, there is a quite a bit supporting the Valeyard. -Bigeneration has been introduced as a concept that can fix some plot holes with the watcher, and the Valeyard. Perhaps Russel wants to explore that. -The meeps boss has an obsession with 2 hearted creatures. -Leaks suggest the Valeyard might be involved down the line. -The Valeyard is “waiting” for his time. The doctor becoming the Valeyard is inevitable.
Biggest detractor to the Valeyard is that he doesn’t seem intimidating enough to scare of the toymaker.
Regardless, I think we need to bring some attention to “the oldest one” who I am convinced is a separate entity. Not only that, I believe the oldest one is going the main overarching villain of this whole era. The Trickster.
I know I know, you’ve heard it before! It’s been said, but I just can’t get the idea of ruby being a part of the pantheon out of my head. Russel was setting up the trickster brigade in torchwood, SJA and doctor who before Elizebeth Sladen passed away. I’m convinced he wants to finish that story. Also I love the idea of the doctors memory of the hooded figure, that left ruby at the church, changing until the hooded figure is the trickster.
So… perhaps all could be true at the same time?
If I had to guess, the pantheon and the trickster are going to be long haul mystery’s. I reckon Mrs Flood is maybe ruby? Susan will probably show up at some point too. With that being said this is what I think the next three seasons of doctor who will like:
Season 1: Pantheon stuff, trickster has put the doctor in a land of fiction esque tv realm after reaching an agreement with Sutekh. Susan triad is one of his servants. Susan may show up to help doctor here too.
Season 2: more pantheon stuff, doctor starts to have nightmares of the Valeyard, trickster shows up again, season ends with a Dalek finale (classic Russel)
Season 3: the fear and dread of becoming the Valeyard worsens. Trickster is involved by slowly manipulating events from the bigeneration to ensure ncuti/david regenerates into the Valeyard. David/ncuti/other doctors saves the day.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
TLDR; One who waits = Sutekh Main villain of era / The oldest one = Trickster Mrs flood = Ruby? Susan will probably show up at some point.

2024.05.20 00:34 G-M-Dark Episode 3: "Blow"- by Steven Moffat

So, did you manage to count all the re-cycled elements from Steven Moffat's first Doctor Who 2-parter The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances all the way back in May 2005 in Saturdays episode Blow - I mean, Boom...?
Did we have the Gas-Mask kid - no. We did not. But the main villain of the piece is indeed a combat ambulance, we have a kid - this time a little girl - searching (this time) for her Daddy who's been converted into something approximating what he originally was but not quite the original thing and the whole episode rests around a situation wherein everything's about to be blown to smithereens at any moment due to a bomb being on pause.
Oh yes, and the Doctor ends up dancing.
I'm a huge fan of Steven Moffat but, to be perfectly honest, Boom came across more a reject from the Droste Effect meta that became both the raison d'être and ongoing motif of his tenure as showrunner throughout his Matt Smith/Peter Capaldi era.
I got the gag right off the bat: Doctor Who instilled in this guy, at a very young age - that of Amy actually when 11 first meets her (a Scottish boy character would too on-the-nose and nowhere near as pretty to work with) - the urge to write, and I understand that: this fucking show got me at about the same age too.
So, when Steven Moffat gets his chance to write his own version of this thing, it's not just going to be a bunch of stories loosely strung together: this is going to be his dissertation on both the art of TV writing, as well as a history of Doctor Who.
If you want a free and actually very, very good course on both creative screenwriting as well as a crackingly good discourse on the art of writing Doctor Who - Steven Moffat's go as showrunner is an actually very, very witty, cleverly constructed and seriously well written Open University course in creative writing: he takes you through everything, the key core concepts being that writers - not just Doctor Who writers, but writers don't originate anything: they recycle.
To put it in the clearest terms, the screenwriter is The Silence: they don't originate anything, what they do is take whatever's already been done, chop it up into smaller bits and then tell an entirely different story to the "original" by simply moving the bits around to bring about a different outcome.
And you see this used over and over - the same motifs, the same story elements refused, often reversed from the original, and used as the basis of a new story effecting a different outcome, thus:
Say in the case of The Silence) (for example) you have a highly secretive religious order who go around manipulating everything to effect a history they want to replace another yet - at the same time - excise and remove all memory and trace of themselves from reality - whereas, when we come to Peter Capaldi's run we have The Monks who basically do exactly the opposite - they set out to write themselves into history making humanity believe they've always been there helping when, if fact the exact opposite is true...
But it doesn't just stop there: go back all the way to the Bill Hartnell era and the Peter Butterworth character The (Meddling Monk) - the idea of meddling Monks in the fabric of Doctor Who has its genesis far, far earlier - and The Silence too - go back to the David Tennant story Silence in The Library/Forrest of The Dead: Donna finds herself trapped in a virtual ream governed by a dapper suited Dr Moon who, the moment reality begins to creep in, just appears out of nowhere, gives you a "rational" reason why whatever glitch isn't important - and then, you forgot....
But even this has its roots in far, far earlier Doctor Who stories: the Mind Robber), The Land of Fiction - Moffat is perfectly candid about the fact he's not just simply a screenwriter, he's an incredible geek about Doctor Who - and he doesn't go to these lengths just for your benefit, this - his version of the show - is his oeuvre - he's not just a fan, he's a cleaver, cleaver bastard, and he never gets tired of letting you know that.
And so it goes on: Moffats take on the show is a meta involving his entire approach to both being a writer, the act of writing as well as knowing his stuff concerning the show - and, as you go through it, it's a joy to peel back the layers of exactly how many levels Steven Moffat likes to hold forth - confidently - about stuff he really does actually know a fuck of a lot about...
But here, in the context of the current show - this isn't what Moffats doing: he did all that, if you want to go back and stick your head inside Steven Moffats - by all means, go back and watch his version of Doctor Who.
Boom, however, is none of the above things, is just plain lazy: this is something he could have written with one hand tied behind his back and his eyes shut - and I wouldn't put it past him to have approached it that way were it not physically impossible for him to actually have done it.
This has all the superficial gloss of being a cleaver sci-fi concept - and. lest we not forget, the Villenguard Algorithm actually exists, if you're an NHS patient the acceptable cost of your long-term treatment is pre-determined and capped, controlled by an algorithm that just does the maths and decides to pull the plug after spending has reached a certain point: this is a real life thing, Steven Moffat hasn't made it up he's just become aware of it enough to feel as outraged as any right thinking person should - but, that's a different debate.
The point is Boom really is - for a fuck cleaver guy who never gets tired of pressing home how incredible cleaver he is - is a pretty lazy rehash of something he actually wrote far better, probably around 20 years ago.
Maybe that's the point - maybe this is a measure of the distance travelled and lessons learned: were this penned by anyone else, their parents would rightly (and proudly) give a copy pride of place magneted to the fridge - but this is Steven Moffat...
He actually does know better and he's ignoring it.
For Steven Moffat this really was going through the motions at turning in an original script - nice to see Davis's "snow" - and Ruby - are properly established as this season's Bad Wolf - but even this really is sticking to tried and tested crowd pleasing ground even on Russel's part.
Boom lacks, for want of a better word - everything that made Steven Moffat penned story the treasure it once used to be - I know the extended 5 years of the bugger running the show would drain anyone - but this was a rehash plain and simply just to have something to turn in.
Moffat wasn't trying here - he was coasting and, really, it shows. Great job on Russel's part pulling the show back from the brink BBC Studios had happily let the show slide perilously close to going over as far as domestic audiences were concerned - but I'm not seeing anything here that wasn't done better 20 years ago: and frankly it lacked any of the spark that actually made the show good when it first came back.
A few nifty tricks - the whole body thing - "Sharp scratch" - this is a guy who's been to the hospital more than he would otherwise like the past few years - you hit a certain age, I've been there.
But this was more a dud than an explosion - perhaps I should have tempered my expectations, but when the name Steven Moffat is attached to something - it should at least sparkle, and this wasn't even a sparkler.
Just a dud that, in the end, failed to go off.
8/10 if it were written by anyone else - coming from Steven Moffat, however - I'm being generous with a 6/10.
I watched it, probably never going to go back.

2024.05.19 22:55 dlmstd Just finished for the first time

Last night I posted how I was on episode 8 and did watch the next 2 episodes right after that. Episode 8 shit hits the fan and while I was expecting Nates death I didn’t expect it to happen when it did. They kinda pulled a fast one with him waking up from the coma so quickly. Then the shared dream with Nate and David was truly a gag with David waking up to the flatline.
I mentioned how I hoped Russel didn’t get any more screen time and he was literally in the next episode… for the last time thank goodness but yeah he was obnoxious.
Today I watched the last two episodes.
No mention of Gabe, ultimately he’s dead to Claire, who did in a way get her big break.
The incest scene was actually disgusting. Mostly because of how gross Billy is but the fact it didn’t seem like a dream at first was what made it realllllly weird.
Did anyone else think Brenda’s baby was dead when Nate and Nate Sr. were holding Willa?
The ending was quite nice, I’m talking about the real ending and not the last scene; with Claire leaving, Ruth moving in with her sister, and David and Keith moving into the funeral home and the name going back to Fisher and Sons. All that is very satisfying. The dinner scene was very touching and even though a lot of shows can bring back characters on screen after they die (this show never being an exception from the very first episode), which in ways lessens the impact of their death, Nate really felt dead. Any time we see apparitions of dead characters it’s really just the hallucinators projection and not really their ghost, and that rule applied to Nate. Good job.
Okay so one thing not sitting right with me is everyone else’s death. I appreciated it at first, seeing Ruth’s end… but when the next one was Keith who got shot and killed… it didn’t feel right and was like the least offensive bury your gays moment to ever happen in media. I’m not a fan of the way they leave the current timeline and handled the non-question of how everyone dies. Not quite sure if it was unearned but for me it was unfulfilling.
Brenda dying to Billy babbling… like how terrible for her??? Where was her new man? Where were Maya and Willa then?
David remarrying then collapsing and dying to a vision of Keith…. K. Also how David finally “healed” his fear of his attacker by hugging himself? I get the message I just don’t think it works after 20 episodes of him going back and forth with the trauma. No therapy just dreams and hallucinations…. Like “bam here’s another uncontrollable thing happening to you but this time David you’re gonna be healed” kinda rushed after being dragged for so long.
Claire dying at 102 in her bedroom with a hospice nurse… where’s her family? Like anyone? Even if she didn’t have kids where’s the nieces and nephews?
Ultimately I enjoyed the show very much. If anyone feels different to how I do about anything I said please say why, I’ll be reading them while rewatching the pilot.

2024.05.19 22:22 RexusBoisens- Any space-ish guitar instrumentals?

How are y'all? So I have been listening to David Matthews rendition of Space Oddity a lot after finding about the use of it in MF DOOM's Rapp Snitches Knishes and I'm wondering if any of y'all know of any albums or artists with that same sort of space-like guitar solos. Stuff oriented towards experimental jazz and chill guitar instrumentals (other than Pink Floyd, preferably more obsucre or chill). Something on the same vein as AiCortex/Casiopea/Piero Umiliani to name a few.
Thank you~<3

[Brag Post] My set of Cyberpunk stuff

"Mindless consumerism wins the day again."

(Pics inside)
As I like to brag about things I buy, here's my collection od Cyberpunk-branded stuff, excluding digital goods.
I don't like dust collectors, so my collection lacks figurines or keychains. I prefer physical media that I can enjoy by flipping pages and watching pictures. Collection is still incomplete, my ambitions won't let me rest until I waste all my money for more stuff with "Cyberpunk 2077" logo on it.
Night City Radio Deluxe Vinyl Set
To start with the most recent hunt: Radio Deluxe Vinyl Set includes two bright yellow-colored records and 12-inch felt turntable slipmat with radiostations logos (too big for my turntable) and extra packaging. Tracklist includes "No Save Point", "Night City", "PonPon Shit", "Delicate Weapon", "I Really Want To Stay At Your House", "Hole In The Sun" and others. The only flaw is lack of "Makes Me Feel Better" in the songs selection.
Edgerunners Vinyl Soundtrack and Phantom Liberty Vinyl OST
Yellow vinyl strikes again in more vibrant, lemonish version. There's an Edgerunners logo with sandevistan visual effect from the show printed on the both labels. Package includes two-sided sleeve with David Martinez and Lucy, OBI-like strip, cardboard insert with Lucy art and credits. Track listing includes "This Fffire" by Franz Ferdinand, which is opening theme from the show, Akira Yamaoka compositions and selections of songs from the anime and the game by Marcin Przybyłowicz and P.T. Adamczyk, like "Cloudy Day". The songlist is crowned with "Let Me Down" by Dawid Podsiadło.
Phantom Liberty OST has very similar packaging - Vinyl and cardboard insert with Songbird art, tracklist, credits and note from composers P.T. Adamczyk and Jacek Paciorkowski. I find this one more appealing visually, probably because of elegance of black and red mix and classic black vinyl, compared to Edgerunners' edgy yellow. The record's opening "I'm a Netrunner" gives the chills, there's no better track to start audio from Phantom Liberty. It also features "Hardest to Be" and Idris Elba "Choke Hold". Again, the final track of the compilation is Dawid Podsiadło's song titled "Phantom Liberty". Only thing I'd like this release to have is "Phantom Liberty" lyrics printed on the insert.
Cyberpunk 2077 3LP Soundtrack box set
This one is special, it's a 100-pieces limited copy signed by Marcin Przybyłowicz and P.T. Adamczyk. It includes a selection of OST tracks, with "V theme", "Rebel Path", "The Streets Are Long-Ass Guts", "Wushu Dolls", "Scavenger Hunt", "Patridiots", "Been Good To Know Ya", "Never Fade Away feat. Olga Jankowska". Also, it features Samurai EP in badass gatefold package, with brief info about Refused band.

In regard of music, the only thing I'm missing is Kerry Eurodyne's guitar, because the gonk who initially wanted to sell it to me changed his mind and now is straight up lying that someone stole it from his apartament. Also, original Johnny Silverhand's Deluze Orphean signed by famous actor Keanu Reeves was sold at charity auction in 2023 for ~7700 usd.
When it comes to other media, I mostly own paper - comicbooks and artbooks.
(comic)books
My cellulose set includes (left to right, top to bottom):
  • "No Coincidence" by Rafał Kosik;
  • "World of Cyberpunk" in both regular and deluxe versions - the deluxe one is exactly the same as basic version, but comes with set of gadgets like extra cardboard packaging, custom textured cover with Night City map art, temporary tats (XD), Johnny Silverhand poster and vehicles postcards. Funny thing is, it's more difficult now to buy regular version than deluxe one;
  • Limited edition of official game's guide coming with premium access code for Piggyback interactive map;
  • Limited "Art of Cyberpunk 2077" artbook - 216 pages of concept arts explaining different fashion styles, gangs design, some weaponery concepts, cars and main and side characters. It's basically physical, richer version of official digital artbook, and as far as I know it's the same one that was included in collector's edition. It's fascinating thing to see for one reason - some of character concepts visible on artbook's pages evolved into ingame characters in basically unchanged visual form;
  • Steelbook;
  • DVD box including OST on CD;
  • "Your Voice" comicbook in hard cover - I don't know much about this edition, why it is so small and where it was initially released. It's in polish, smells like poligraphic chemicals and it's the same thing as its bigger brother. Definitely rarest and most mysterious thing in my collection, if someone knows its origin, please share your wisdom;
  • Comicbooks - Trauma Team, Where's Johnny, Your Voice, Big City Dreams, You Have My Word and Blackout;
And that would be it. My next objectives are upcoming comicbooks and maybe collector's edition. Steelbooks would be nice addition too.

2024.05.19 20:23 Rambooctpuss Discography Rabbit Hole Warren Zevon: Excitable Boy (1978)

Discography Rabbit Hole Warren Zevon: Excitable Boy (1978)
Excitable Boy
Zevon's third album became his most commercially successful album. Moving away form the country rock and expanding more into straight out 70’s rock It contained his two most popular songs “Werewolves Of London” and “Lawyers, Guns, And Money” this album feels more LA than his previous record filled with shining bright grooves.
The album opens with “Johnny Strikes Up The Band” which is just this straight up 70’s rock song. It has all your typical Zevon troupes. Great vocals, nice crisp guitar tones, and that hard hitting melodic groove. “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner” was co-written by David Lindell who Zevon met in 1973 while Zevon was visiting Spain. The song is about a fictional character who gets involved in the Nigerian civil war and the Congo Crisis of the 1960’s. Lindell actually served as a Mercenary In Africa. The song was the last song Zevon performed live before his death. He performed on an episode of Late Night w/David Letterman on October,30th 2023.”Excitable Boy” is filled with so much energy. It features backing vocals by longtime Zevon friend Linda Rondstandt and Jim Horn on sax. “Werewolves Of London” has such a memorable melodic hook. This song is just filled with sarcastic fun. It became Zevon’s signature song. Mick Fleetwood and John Mcvie provide the rhythm section. The song started out as a joke between Zevon and Phil Everly and took on a life of its own. It was one of the hardest songs to record in the studio; they kept swapping out musicians and did over 40 takes. “Accidently like A Martyr” is a mid tempo blues tinged tune. I love Zevon’s voice on this track. He had a great way of giving off such yearning on songs like this. “Nighttime In The Switching Yard” is this disco/funk fueled track. Bob Glaub’s great bass work is the highlight of the song. It just gives off fun energy. “Veracruz” is about the American Invasion of Velacruz, Mexico during the Woodrow Wilson presidency. The song takes standard rock grooves and adds melodies and instrumentals from the Mexican Boleros which was popular in the early 1900’s when the song is set. “Tenderness On The Block” is your standard melodic 70’s rock song. It has such a catchy hook and melody that Zevon did so well. The album closes with “Lawyers, Guns, And Money” ; it has such a catchy melody you can’t help but sing along to that chorus. Lyrically Zevon has never been more vicious the song is about An Americans adventures in Latin America. It's just a great 70’s rock song.
It’s hard for me to determine which album I like better, this or the self-titled. Both have great songwriting and strong playing by Zevon and his parade of session musicians and guest artists. I love it for being more of a straightforward rock album. It is just a fun album to dive into. It definitely should be on any bucket lists or albums to hear before you die list.

2024.05.19 18:57 Impressive-End-2705 Composing a song by just humming

Hi,
I don't know much music theory, I can't hardly play five, six chords on keyboards, and worse on a guitar. Someone suggested trying with a baritone ukulele, as it should be easier playing chords. Maybe you won't believe me, but I had tried hard. However, it's quite easy for me to hum a melody, verse and chorus. So, how can I compose a full pop song? If you were me, which kind of musician you would look for to help you? I own a Dubler software which transform my humming into musical notes. I own Band in a box and a Daw, Ableton, with some plugins. Anyway, I can't see how I can find the right chords. Can you help me with a method for unskilled guys? Or is it some kind of hit and miss practise which demands patience? Thanks in advance!
David

2024.05.19 17:02 _Owl_Jolson A tip by David Russell on how to do tremolo, helped me to finally "get" rolling chords

My inability to properly roll chords was discouraging, and has kept me from considering myself a proper classical guitarist. I don't have the ability to hire a teacher, so I'm on my own, using YouTube videos.
I've watched a bunch on rolling chords and did some exercises but none of them really did the trick for me. But it was a video by David Russell who was actually teaching tremolo and not chord rolling, that got it to "click" with me.
Here, he talks about how even somebody who "works on a building site" can naturally and effortlessly make the proper, repetitive motions required for tremolo (and therefore chord rolling, of course).
Cued up at 3:54 https://youtu.be/PdoByVjSXKY?t=234
So keeping his example in mind, I have FINALLY been able to do chord rolls with some kind of regularity, and it is nice to know that with enough work, I'll be able to do them acceptably well while performing. Because I was beginning to have my doubts that I would EVER be able to "get it"... that I was some how brain damaged or something lol.

2024.05.19 15:48 lightingnations I found my girlfriend’s secret Google account and it feels like our entire relationship is built on a lie

I met Luna on a train two years ago. I’d just escaped from a toxic relationship, so romance was the last thing on my mind, but then she sat across from me in the carriage and asked about the book I was reading. She had a copy in her bag and wanted to know if it was any good.
I'd never felt such an instant, effortless connection with anybody before. I took a chance and asked her to dinner, and by the time the waiters cleared away our desserts, I already felt comfortable being vulnerable around her. So we went on a second date. And a third. And next thing I knew, we were planning our second anniversary.
Now in all that time, she never once gave off any 'creeper' vibes. But then a few months back, I stayed the night over at her place. When she got up to use the bathroom, I grabbed her laptop off the side desk so I could catch up on some work e-mails, and the incognito tab was just sitting there. My first thought was: either she's having an affair or she's got a secret fetish.
What I found instead was a Google account with a photo album called ‘Michael’s EX’. In it, there were 427 photos of my former girlfriend turned psycho stalker, Sadie. This included shots of ‘Sadie the stalker’ with her family, screenshots of her passport—the works. On Facebook, Sadie's latest post said Moving to the Philippines, and since then she’d become a social media church mouse, so how did Luna keep her under surveillance? And how did you even get PERSONAL ID from a person halfway across the globe?
Down the hall, I heard the bathroom door swing open. Quickly I closed the laptop and pretended to be asleep until Luna planted a kiss on my lips. “Wakey wakey Bugs.”
I faked a stretch. “Morning Lola."
(At school, the other kids christened me ‘Bugs’ because of my cartoonishly large front teeth; I called Luna ‘Lola’ because of her blonde bangs and heart-shaped face.)
“How about we grab a fry for breakfast?” Her smile didn’t seem genuine, more like she was wearing a mask.
“Crap. I forgot I’m doing overtime today, I’ve gotta get to work.” With that, I shot out of there faster than a bullet train to Tokyo.
Because I didn’t wanna believe the worst about someone I cared so deeply about, I didn’t contact the police (not that anybody could’ve guessed what Luna was up to) and made excuses whenever she asked to meet, delaying the decision whether to end our relationship.
At night, I couldn’t sleep. Every time a hedge rustled outside, I’d run to the window and pull back the curtain only to discover a black cat skulking around the garden. I put this down to my previous relationship leaving me with a mountain of unresolved PTSD.
Sadie the stalker also seemed normal until we moved in together. After that she started picking fights if she caught me talking to another woman, even just distant relatives or childhood friends. The screaming matches went from weekly to nightly, only ever ending when I conceded to her every wish and gave her full access to my phone and social media accounts. I literally needed to grab my clothes into a bag and run away one night, and then I started hearing noises outside my new apartment. And although I never found any evidence, I was pretty sure she’d broken in at one point because the books on my side table were suddenly out of order one day. What hurt the most was Luna knew all this and still acted the way she did.
Right as I reached my lowest point, my close friend Gertrude called and said, “The universe is telling me you could use a sympathetic ear.”
I told her the universe didn’t know the half of it.
I’d met Gertrude—aka my surrogate mother—on a flight to London. Passing over Wales the aircraft hit heavy turbulence, and the grey-haired hippie in the seat next to mine squeezed my hand so tight that my fingers turned blue. After we levelled off, she apologized and said, “So what’s calling you to London?”
“A job.”
A few glasses of wine from the service trolley later, she blurted out, “You know your aura is strikingly similar to my husbands.”
“Uhh, thanks. Where is he now?”
“Oh, he burned to death in a house fire.”
Gertrude’s eyes started welling up. To take her mind off the subject, I said, “I lied earlier. I’m going to London because I fell in love with a Londoner.” I pulled up pictures of Sadie (back in her pre-stalker days) on my phone. “We met in Italy. She looked flustered trying to read a map book so I offered to help. Next thing I knew, we were planning a trip to this place called Orvieto.”
“Michael, I need to know how this story ends. Gimme your number.”
Since then, we’d met two or three times a year.
I laid the whole mess out over pizza. It was the first time since finding the Google account I didn’t feel hidden eyes crawling all over me.
Just as I wrapped up the story, over in the corner booth, a family burst into a chorus of happy birthday. A waiter appeared carrying a chocolate cake, capped by a giant candle that looked more like a flare. Gertrude tensed up.
“So what do you think about all this?” I asked.
She looked back at me and said, “It’s possible your reaction has been a touch on the dramatic side.”
“DRAMATIC??”
“Well consider things from Luna’s point of view. Your last relationship lasted for, what, three years? Maybe she felt threatened.”
“I don’t believe this.” I grabbed a cigarette from my pocket, but Gertrude snatched it away.
“You know how I feel about you poisoning your lungs, Michael.”
“Don’t you start. I got enough of that crap from Luna.”
Gertrude always encouraged me to work through my romantic problems. Ultimately, I decided her love of fairytale romances clouded her judgement and ghosted Luna instead. But I couldn’t escape her shadow. She always felt close. In fact, it got so bad that at a friend’s costume party several weeks later, my eyes kept compulsively scanning the crowd as if she was there in disguise, ready to pounce.
I stood off to the corner until, over the sea of heads, I spotted a beautiful stranger dressed as Jarlath the Goblin King. I took a shot of liquid courage and made a B-line towards her.
Halfway across the crowded room, beer splashed across the front of my Ziggy Stardust outfit.
“I am so sorry,” a female pirate said, patting me dry.
“Don’t worry about it.” Every time I tried circling her, she moved to cut me off.
“I am such a klutz. Why don’t you come into the kitchen so I can clean up this mess?”
I put my hands on her shoulders and steered her out of the way. “It’s fine. Trust me.”
Approaching Jarlath from behind, heart slamming against my chest, I said, “Well this is awkward. One of us is gonna have to change.”
Jennie had bright blue eyes and dimples impossible to miss. Ten minutes into our debate about David Bowie’s greatest album, I said, “You know Absolute Bowie are playing the Half Moon next week. I could take you?”
“Sorry. I’m going with my boyfriend,” she said with a sympathetic smile. From beside the buffet table, the pirate stared daggers in our direction.
“No worries,” I replied, despite the fact I was brimming with jealousy.
The next day, as I jogged off my hangover, a brown-haired lady cut across my path and we both went spinning to the ground.
“Flip, sorry.” I rushed to pull her up by the hands. “I’m like a bloody zombie lately.”
She did a doubletake. “Ziggy, right?”
There was no mistaking those eyes. “Jarlath?”
“Well, Jarlath or Jennie. Eithers fine.”
“Right. Well, sorry again. Enjoy Absolute Bowie.”
Before I could jog away, she said, “Hey, so that guy I was seeing? Turns out he’s a total prick.”
Jennie and I went for coffee. Coffee morphed into drinks. Drinks morphed into a steamy make-out session on my sofa.
But as she covered my neck in soft kisses, my stomach turned. It felt like cheating. So, I put the brakes on things and said, “I can’t do this. I’m really sorry. You’re amazing, but I just got out of a serious relationship…and…it’s just…”
“Hey, don’t worry about it.”
We agreed we’d let our connection blossom in its own time.
Jennie had a playful mystique to her. Within a handful of dates, we’d developed inside jokes and could tell what the other was thinking. But Luna’s imprint was hard to shake, to the extent I almost mixed up the two ladies’ names multiple times.
To detox, I suggested Jennie and I spend a romantic weekend in the Lake District, because after two days of hiking and kayaking my ex would no doubt be a spec in the rearview mirror.
Hours before we set off, however, Luna’s mom called. She wanted to meet and wouldn’t accept any excuses.
“Look, it’s obvious why I’m here,” she said, sitting across from me in Starbucks. “Ever since you and Luna broke up, she’s been acting…different.”
“Different? Different how?”
“I call but she hardly answers. I go over to her place but she’s never there. Now she’s telling me she needs to find herself. Says she’s moving to Australia.”
Her fingers tightened around her cup. “I need to know what happened between you two. And I don’t care if that paints anybody in a bad light. I’m just worried about my daughter is all.”
I told her about the Google account.
“Did you confront her about it?”
“Hell no. I ghosted that crazy bitc—” I cleared my throat. “I mean, I just…stopped seeing her.”
She started crying so loudly customers at nearby tables paused their conversations. I touched her forearm, promised I’d call if I remembered anything else, then set off for my romantic weekend.
But while Jennie and I enjoyed all that fresh air and pub food, a thought nagged at me. Luna adored London, so why move to Australia? It seemed so out of character. Back at our rented cottage, I was so fixated on the thought I needed a smoke, badly.
“What the hell is that?” Jennie demanded, as she stepped onto the front deck.
I glanced at my hands. “Uhh, a cigarette.”
“Michael! Don’t be sarcastic. You know how I feel about those things.”
“…Do I?”
“Uhh, well it’s the same as anybody else. Quit poisoning your lungs and put that thing out.”
“Alright alright, geeze. Sorry Luna.”
“That’s okay.”
A knot formed in my stomach as she went back inside. I’d called Jennie Luna by mistake. And she hadn’t noticed. In fact, her reaction to me smoking was identical to Luna’s—even the snappy way she said the ‘poison your lungs’ line.
I followed Jennie into the lounge, where she’d curled up on an armchair with a Colleen Hoover novel. She was hiding something. What else did she know about Luna? Maybe I could trick her into revealing some details…
From behind, I started massaging her shoulders. “Sorry for being rude before. I know what you said came from a place of love.”
“That’s okay.”
I waited until her eyes drooped shut, then said, “It really is perfect here, huh? Maybe we should stay forever.”
“Wouldn’t that be amazing?”
Her little groans of pleasure, the rhythm of her breathing, it all felt so familiar. I waited until the tension in her neck dissolved, then I pushed my lips against her ear and whispered, “So how about we take this into the bedroom…Lola.”
“Hmm. Sure thing Bugs.”
My hands froze. Jennie jumped up. “Uhh, that felt so good, why’d you stop?”
“What did you just say?”
“What did you just say?”
“I called you Lola,” I replied, my arms frozen in midair. “And you called me bugs.”
“Like the cartoon, right? I thought it’d be a cute nickname. Anyway, I’m tuckered out.” She forced a yawn. “Why don’t we get some sleep?”
As her hand laced with mine, an image of me waking up drugged and gagged and tied to the bedposts flashed before my eyes.
I said, “Sure. I just…need to use the bathroom first.”
The second the door shut behind me, I flew out of the house, climbed in my car, and sped away.
Within seconds my phone started blowing up with calls, followed by texts. Where are you going? Is everything okay?
No, I wanted to reply. I’m onto your sick little game. Whatever it is, I’m onto it.
Luna stalked my stalker, now Jennie somehow knew Luna and I’s nicknames. How? Did all women take turns drawing straws and whoever picked the short one needed to become my girlfriend?
I couldn’t go home. For all I knew, my exes would’ve been there burning effigies of me. I needed a safe place. Somewhere I could lie low until I got all this straightened out.
“Of course you can stay,” Gertrude said over the phone. “I’m out with some friends, but I’ll meet you later. If you hop the side gate there’s a spare key under the kissing gnomes out back.”
Gertrude lived in a detached house in Wembley. It took a bit of foraging to find the gnomes hidden beneath the weeds in the brown, patchy garden.
I needed to shoulder the door open. Inside, a mountain of letters and flyers had piled up on the welcome mat.
Down the hall, a huge archway connected the landing with a lounge, where a bar sat against the far wall, surrounded by upholstered sofas, a low table, and tie dye sheets strung over the filthy carpet. Everything had a real elegant vibe, despite the musty air.
I’d drained two glasses of whiskey before Gertrude arrived.
“Looks like you’ve had a rough evening.”
I said we could talk in the morning.
“Not a chance. You can’t take negative energy to bed. Come on, confession is good for the soul.”
She sat on the sofa and patted the empty seat next to her. So, with a weary sigh, I shared a tale of deranged exes.
“Crazy,” she said.
“I sure can pick ‘em, huh?”
“No, I mean you’re crazy.”
“What?”
“Think about it. What’s more likely: that your ex’s are secretly in collusion, or you’re being paranoid? Look how bloodshot your eyes are. When’s the last time you got a good night’s rest?”
She made a great point; teenagers on the street occasionally shouted ‘Bugs’ or ‘Thumper’ at me. Jennie might’ve come up with the nickname herself. I pinched the bridge of my nose, groaning.
“Look, sleep here tonight. Tomorrow we’ll brainstorm ways you can make it up to Jennie.”
I fumbled through my pockets for a cigarette.
“Really?” Gertrude said. “If you insist on poisoning your lungs, can you at least do it away from my home?”
“Well if I can’t smoke, I’m gonna need a refill.” I shook my empty glass.
On my way toward the bar, a wave of wooziness hit me. My first instinct was to blame it on the alcohol, but there was something else.
It was her reaction to the cigarette. My finger ran through the thick layer of dust along the bar’s countertop. Why was it like the place had been abandoned? Why did Gertrude always pressure me to stay with my psycho girlfriends? And how come she always reached out, as if on cue, whenever my relationships hit problems? It couldn’t be coincidence…
I poured two glasses of whiskey and carried them to the sofa. “So, you’re really against the whole smoking thing, huh?”
“Of course. It’s a filthy habit.”
“Yeah. Plus, there was that mess with your husband. House fire, right?”
“I’d rather not discuss it.”
“Sure, sure.” I ignited the lighter with a roll across my trouser leg.
Gertrude grabbed a cushion and hugged it. “What are you doing?”
“Alright, cut the crap. What the hell’s going on? Have you been sending your friends to date me?”
“What are you talking about?”
I wrestled the cushion from her and held the lighter beneath it. “I want an explanation right now or I’m torching this place.”
This was an empty threat. I wasn’t some pyromaniac—I just wanted answers. Inch by inch, I raised the flame. “Last chance. Why are the women in my life acting weird?”
Gertrude grabbed for the lighter. As I swatted her wrists away, we both got scorched, and for a moment her skin went wild with spasms, a sensation I can only compare to reaching inside a bucket of wet, writhing maggots. My gaze whipped between her face and her hands, which vibrated like plucked guitar strings.
Before I could scream, she yanked me up, clamped a cold, wrinkled palm across my mouth, and forced me against the wall. I thrashed around, unable to move. For a lady old enough to collect a pension, she was crazy strong.
She waited until I ran out of breath, then said, “Michael, please. I’m not going to hurt you. Open your heart and listen.”
What else could I do?
“You were right before. I have been keeping a secret from you. The truth is, I’ve been in love with you since we met. I’d never flown before. And you were so so sweet. You started talking about this other woman, but I knew our energies were perfect for each other. And it’s like I always say, love makes us do crazy things. You can’t begrudge me that can you?”
She looked as if she expected me to respond, so I shook my head.
“But I think we’ve reached a point where our connection is so deep we can be completely transparent with one another.” She took a slow, steady breath. “Michael, all your ex’s, Luna, Sadie, Jennie. They’ve all been…well, me.”
I stared at her, confused.
She sighed. “It’ll be easier if I just show you.”
Out of nowhere her hand wriggled again, then her face tightened, as though the skin was being stretched over the bone. Wrinkles smoothed out and colour bled into her grey hair, turning it brown, and within seconds I found myself face-to-face with Jennie. Even her vintage clothes morphed into a green blouse and white slacks.
“See?” she said in Jennie’s voice, her now blue eyes locked on mine.
I screamed into the soft flesh of her palm.
“Sssh, it’s okay. I’m not gonna hurt you. Watch.”
Her entire body jerked and twitched, the muscles spasming as she shifted from Jennie to Luna. “See? Think of these as costumes”—from Luna to Sadie—"the important thing is what’s underneath. And you’ve fallen in love with what’s underneath three times. Now I’m going to let go, but I need you to promise you won’t overreact. Understand?”
On the verge of a panic attack, I nodded furiously.
The second she pulled away I made a break for the exit. The thing posing as Sadie grabbed me and hurled me backwards against the wall.
Like a disappointed teacher, she put her hands on her hips. “I’ve been so patient with you, Michael. So very, very patient.”
She blocked off any hope of escape. I sidestepped around the outer edge of the room, towards the bar.
“All those years moulding you. Trying to grow you into the man I know you can be. I really thought we had it this time. For the record, I wanted to do this the easy way. But drastic times...”
I was so scared I slammed right into the cabinet and yelped. Glass bottles chattered together, and then something wet ran down the back of my shirt. It was whiskey, leaking from the overturned bottle onto the carpeted floor.
Speaking more to herself now, Gertrude said, “I’ll just have to keep you here until you love me as much as I love you. Of course, that means posing as you so nobody gets suspicious, but that’s no trouble. I’ll tell your dad you’re moving to Italy. You always loved Italy.”
Pose as me? She'd been killing my ex's and taking their place, I was just the latest in a long line. She’d keep me as a personal sugar baby if I didn’t escape, but how? She was impossibly strong, and the only thing that seemed to scare her was…
Snatching the bottle, I doused the remaining whiskey all over the carpet and furniture. As I flicked the lighter open, Sadie’s hands shot up.
Bugs…darling…what are you doing?”
I took three slow, steady breaths. “Breaking up with you, you crazy bitch.”
I tossed the lighter forward. Within seconds flames sprung up all around us, spreading as far as the sofa. Sadie’s shoe caught fire, and as she stamped around, unintentionally fanning the blaze, her body writhed again, starting with the ankles. Fat boils climbed up every inch of exposed skin, milky white and with the consistency of frog spawn, like she’d had a killer allergic reaction to poison ivy.
She dropped to her knees, wailing like a wounded animal. This was my chance.
I made a break for the exit, giving the creature as wide a berth as possible. But as I got one foot planted in the hall something clamped tight around my ankles. My chin hit the floor, then I started sliding backwards.
I twisted onto my back. Where Sadie’s left arm should’ve been, a tentacle-like appendage stretched across the length of the room, a distance of over twenty feet. It reeled me toward her like a fish on a line. Whatever that thing was no longer looked human. It melted like an ice statue, with no bones or connective tissue inside, its lips nose and mouth becoming hideously elongated before dripping off in huge globs like melted candlewax. A fire alarm started wailing as the tentacle dragged me through the flames, scorching my arms and legs.
The loose mass of skin reached out and encased me like a mother bird sheltering its eggs.
“WHY WON’T YOU LOVE ME?” all my ex’s voices screamed at once. Whichever direction I looked, silhouettes of faces rose and fell, as if trying to burst through. Parts of them dripped inside my mouth, disgustingly warm with a bitter taste worse than Vaseline.
I put everything into clawing my way out if there. What was left of the beast had the consistency of wet clay and came apart just as easily. I tore away chunks until there was a hole large enough to squeeze through. Then, I crawled along surrounded by black smoke.
At the far side of the room I risked a glance back and saw a bumpy, uneven hand reaching out of a puddle of ooze. Soon I was crawling over the bristly welcome mat, then fumbling for the door. All I remember after that are paramedics wrestling me into an ambulance…
A specialist officer came to see me at the hospital the next morning. They’d been unable to contact the homeowner, Gertrude Huyton, and through his line of questioning I could tell they hadn’t found her ‘remains’ inside the charred house. Like the wicked witch of the West, my stalker had melted. I told the officer she said I could stay the night, and that I probably started the fire by dropping a cigarette.
“In that case, we’ll keep trying to reach her.” He walked to the curtain surronding my bed and paused. “Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, her cat is missing.”
“Her...cat?”
“Yeah. The little black one. One of the firemen pulled it out of the wreckage. The poor thing had burns over its legs but it ran off before anybody could take it to the vet.”
I swallowed a gulp and thanked him for telling me.
And now I’m still sitting here listening while nurses rush back and forth, terrified any one of them might be Gertrude…

2024.05.19 14:41 Mulberg Happy to find Paul Gilbert's album

Happy to find Paul Gilbert's album
Instead of bringing fridge magnets form trips, I decided to buy records in each city/country I visit. A memento of some sort.
Today I found Paul Gilbert's album in one of Amsterdam's record stores! Super happy about that, as Paul is one of my favorite guitarists. (and the price was also a steal)
Paul Gilbert, (co-founder of the band Mr. Big, was also a member of Racer X, and now a solo artist) is regarded as one of the best rock guitarists, and he's also a very good guitar teacher. He is famous for shredding, but is also very good at some melodic stuff, blues, and rock guitar in general. Highly recommend to listen to his records of you're into electric guitar.

2024.05.19 09:49 mshidekcomic What’s going on with Doctor Who

So as long time fan of Doctor Who I have been excited about the new Disney+ run. They started by bringing back David Tennat aka the 10th Doctor. Which started the weirdness, for those who don’t know when the Doctor “dies” they regenerate into a new body. So a Doctor with the same face is odd it hasn’t happened yet in the series. Then we got the return of Donna Noble who is a companion of the Doctor and last time we saw her she absorbed some of the Doctor’s energy/DNA, which was deadly to a human. The Doctor had to wipe her memory to save her.
In the 1st special Donna got her memory back and in the time since we saw her last she had a child which split the energy that was going to kill her so she regained her memories. Her child’s name is Rose (I will get into that in a bit). We meet an enemy who says when captured mentioned a boss.
The 2nd special isn’t as important but it still leads up to who may or may not be the boss, the Doctor and Donna end up on a ship at the edge of the universe and they run into this entity that tries to copy them, memory and all. The Doctor tries to capture them with the superstition that monsters/ demons can’t pass salt, which reading their memories the creature knows it’s not true, but by doing that it releases the being known as the Toymaker. Who in a Doctor Who episode over 50 years ago was trapped by believing the salt superstition.
The Toymaker is an entity from something called the Pantheon, beings of the Pantheon embody an aspect of life. The Toymaker is charge of games. They are god like beings that can warp reality around them.
In the 3rd special the Toymaker is loose and causing chaos over our world, the Doctor regenerates into 2 beings in this special. One stays as David Tennat Doctor and the new Doctor who we follow in the main series from now on, the Toy maker warns of his legions and The One who waits. We also see a woman’s hand that picks up a golden tooth which may be the character the Master or the Master is inside the tooth.
Now the first episode with the newest doctor introduces to the character Ruby Sunday who is his companion this season, we learn she was abandoned at a church when she was born. We don’t know where she is from or if she is even human (for now). However we do know something is going on with her cause when the Doctor and her try to remember that night it starts snowing. This where I get into the theory stuff. Something about the writing episodes feels off, I know that may sound weird and if it was a new show runner and writer I wouldn’t bat an eye but the person in charge of the show and writing right now is Russel T. Davies who was the one who helped start the 2000s era of Doctor Who.
Something about Ruby Sunday that stands out to me is she seems a lot like Rose Tyler the first companion of the Russel T.Davies run, she has similar fashion and mannerisms but she also reminds me of the Doctor, last time we saw rose was she was left in a another dimension with a human version of the Doctor. I think somehow Ruby is connected to that but there is more to this.
We learned recently that the Doctor isn’t actually from his home planet, we don’t know where he is from but with the mention of the Pantheon and The One who Waits. I believe either he or Ruby is related to the Pantheon, we recently met the child of the Toymaker. They are known as the Maestro who has control over Music.
Back to the weird writing I think one of these Pantheon entities are affecting the story, cause it still feels like Doctor Who but the writing feels slightly different. It could be one we haven’t met yet, The One who Waits, or maybe The Doctor or Ruby Sunday. If Ruby is related to Rose Tyler and Rose had a child with the Doctor’s clone, we know he doesn’t have any Time Lord in him but what if it had some of the Pantheon in him. It could be passed down to a child aka Ruby. Something is warping the reality around the Doctor and we have seen it in multiple instances in this new season. Plus I have seen some people mention seeing a lady show up in every episode I think she picked up the Master tooth and may also be a culprit for the warper.
Russel T. Davies loves a good story arc so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is hiding lore in plain sight, he did that with his first arc the Bad Wolf arc which is another reference to Rose Tyler. She was the main focus of that arc.
