Don’t know if that’s a hot take or widely agreed upon.
Maybe it’s just not my cup of tea.
I’ve seen some that I absolutely love and find hilarious.
But look at that key word… “hilarious”, as in funny.
The issue is… I’ve found a lot of harem anime don’t intend to incite humor. The entertainment value comes from… watching a guy get all the girls.
Which, at least to me, isn’t entertaining.
Maybe I just don’t care to self insert and go “imagine if that was me!”
I’d happily watch a funny anime with harem aspects, but it’s can’t be a harem first.
Here are the harem anime I’ve enjoyed:

• Rosario and Vampire
• Quintessential Quintuplets
• Monster Mesume
• Rent a Girlfriend
• Baka and Test

I am not sure if these are all specifically harem. But they all have humor or story or plot progression FIRST, harem second. With fleshed out characters with real personalities.
And Quints and Rent don’t even have that much humor! They just have a real plot that progresses, and characters with real personalities.
But I’ve then encountered tons of harem anime that want the harem aspect to be the absolute main aspect. And they’re always just so god damn boring. Very little humor or story or plot.
And oh god don’t get me started on how not only does the guy almost always have absolutely no personality (which I’m guessing exists so that I can pretend he is me), but all the girls are exactly the same character (which I’m guessing exists so that none of them will be offensive to any possible viewer).
I guess for me, I either want my show to be funny, or have good plot and good characters, or both. It can include a harem on top of that, but not in place of that.
Power to you if you enjoy them, but in the end of the day, they’re just not my cup of tea.
