2024.05.20 07:28 Informal_Bike3523 Mastering Academic Writing: Tips for Crafting a Strong Research Paper

Writing a good academic paper requires a combination of careful planning, thorough research, and clear, concise writing. Begin by selecting a topic that is both interesting and relevant to your field of study. Ensure that it is neither too broad nor too narrow, allowing for a comprehensive exploration within the constraints of your assignment. Conduct a thorough literature review to understand the current state of research on your topic, identifying gaps that your paper might fill.
Develop a strong thesis statement that clearly outlines the main argument or purpose of your paper. This statement should guide the structure and focus of your writing. Create an outline to organize your thoughts and ensure a logical flow of information. This outline should include an introduction, body sections, and a conclusion. Each section should serve a distinct purpose in supporting your thesis.
In your introduction, provide background information to contextualize your research, introduce your thesis statement, and outline the structure of your paper. Make sure to engage your reader's interest from the beginning. In the body of your paper, present your arguments and evidence in a clear and logical order. Each paragraph should focus on a single point, beginning with a topic sentence that relates to your thesis. Use evidence from credible sources to support your arguments, and critically analyze this evidence rather than simply presenting it.
Transition smoothly between paragraphs to maintain the flow of your argument. Avoid jargon and overly complex sentences that might confuse your reader. Instead, aim for clarity and precision in your writing. Throughout your paper, maintain an objective and formal tone, avoiding personal anecdotes or biased language.
In your conclusion, summarize the main points of your paper and restate your thesis in light of the evidence presented. Discuss the implications of your findings and suggest areas for future research. Avoid introducing new information in the conclusion; instead, focus on synthesizing the information already discussed.
Once you have completed your draft, revise and edit your paper carefully. Check for coherence, consistency, and clarity. Ensure that your arguments are well-supported and that your evidence is properly cited. Pay attention to grammar, punctuation, and formatting, adhering to the style guide appropriate for your discipline.
Finally, seek feedback from peers or mentors to gain new perspectives on your work. Incorporate constructive criticism to refine your paper further. By following these steps, you can produce a well-organized, insightful, and academically rigorous paper that effectively communicates your research and arguments.

2024.05.20 07:13 lucky_719 Passed AT/AT/B in one month. Took online. Total spent $584.

My actual study time was really closer to two weeks because I took a few weeks off to travel and be distracted. (Recently laid off) I spent 4 hours in the hospital the day before the exam with excruciating back pain. Sitting for so long testing with that level of pain was one of the more miserable things I've done, but I wanted to get it over with. I had 30 minutes left to spare and took a 5 minute and 8 minute break.
I spent a total of $584, exam was $425 with membership. Membership was $159. I did not pay for the local charter. I did not pay for any study materials.
I did take the exam online. I know in person is recommended and I expected to do it that way but the earliest date available was mid June and I wasn't waiting 4 weeks to take it. I barred my husband from the room and from making any noise at all. He was good about keeping the cats away from the door. I cleaned everything out of the bedroom that I possibly could. I used a laptop but used an Ethernet cable for Internet. I set my laptop up on a clear plastic tote so it would be eye level. I paid a lot of attention during the exam to ensure I only looked at the screen and didn't go out of view even for a second. I drew all of my blinds and curtains closed. I kept water and some light snacks in my bathroom (separate room) in case I needed it during breaks. The proctor never interacted with me. Not once. It was a bit unnerving but extremely smooth process and I'm grateful as I had a lot of anxiety around testing online. The worst part was having to wait 25 hours and 38 minutes (who is counting?) after the test had ended for my results.
Background: I have severe ADHD but I am a very good test taker. I'm one of those sick people that finds these things fun. I have passed the financial licensing exams series 7, 63, and 66. If you are familiar with them, the series exams had more content to learn, but the PMP questions were very similar in structure and difficulty to the 63 and 66. Overall I thought the PMP was easier but I had less professional experience when I took the series exams. I took a lot of AP exams back in high school. I'd say this test was harder question wise than any of those but again, less content to cover. I'm a senior scrum master for tech teams with years of experience. I've never worked as a formal project manager in waterfall but I am extremely good at what I do. I mentor many other scrum masters and know agile inside and out. I didn't study for the agile part of the test at all. I took about 60 agile practice questions for reassurance and amusement but only got three wrong so figured I was good. I also have a bachelor's degree in business (years ago) so a good chunk was just a refresher.
I didn't spend any money on materials so here's what I did to study.
I started with Oliver Lehmann's free exam. I do think it was harder than the PMP but I wanted to get a baseline before doing anything. I reviewed all of the questions afterwards and wrote down the topics I really needed to focus on. I scored a 68% the first time through.
I started reading the PMBOK guide you get when you pay for the exam. I downloaded it on my Kindle and would read it when I had the attention span to do so. I read the first 50% of the entire PDF they give you but wish I would've started halfway through as it probably would have been more useful for me. It was taking too long and I was getting antsy so I stopped reading it.
When I didn't have the attention span to read, I binge watched David McLachlan's YouTube videos. I went through the 7th edition PMBOK video three times. First for content, second to check any weaknesses, third to review. I also cast the questions to my TV screen and would pause the question before he read it, answer it myself, then watch him go through it. If I saw any videos of areas of weakness he posted I'd go through them. I went through 60 of his agile questions but the rest of the time I was going through the waterfall ones. I can't give you a count. It was a lot. I did the larger question videos too. This helped the most out of anything I did.
I borrowed a lot of exam prep materials from the library but didn't end up opening any of them at all.
Finally I used this subreddit. Whenever I saw someone post a question they didn't know I'd go through it. So thank you all! I paid a lot of attention to what others were using and what I knew would work for me. I also had a friend who took it a few days before me and we would send each other practice questions or talk about it almost daily. It helped keep me accountable and motivated even when I started slacking off.
Maybe I was over confident but I did get sick of studying and just scheduled the exam for a few days later. I didn't feel 100% prepared but I did feel like I was solid enough to have a good chance of passing. Clearly I should have studied more on the business environments part lol.
Good luck to you all! It really is a beast of a test and frankly I never want to do that again.

2024.05.20 05:18 firelink-shrine In defense of lootas

Lootas have gotten no respect for a while, like it has been hard to make them feel right for a few editions. They had Dakka last edition which I didn’t think was terrible but they didn’t have good detachment support, and I think before that they had something else that worked pretty well then again I am an ork player so who knows what happened that far back.
Most will agree Lootas still aren’t living up to their full potential in 10th with really their main support coming only in dread mob if they have a mek with them which is also weird because of some overlap with reroll abilities. But I disagree with these so called logical arguments and here is why y’all need to put some more respek on my lootas names
-they can do some big work in dread mob now so throw that big mek in there with them, the one with the shokk attack gun -they are and always will be some of the coolest models. these gits just stealing shit and HAULIN giant kitbashed guns around? there is no other unit that makes me feel as good to scream DAKKADAKKADAKKA when rolling 30 dice and hitting 4 times. -they are fun to paint and they don’t break too easily when they are in the boyz bag on the way to the store or when I drop them and they bounce off my shoe and go under the table across the room -imagine all the different kinds of dakka coming out of the deffguns. lead solid projectiles, wish.com lascannon beams, spicy zapp gun electrical things…you name it. you can taste the rainbow with these guys when they open up. -people complain about the spanner tax, yeah yeah it makes the math harder for all of us and also sometimes it’s just nice to have more deffgun options for the flavour (see above) but have you considered that it’s also a free rokkit? I killed a terminator with a rokkit one time, really. Not bad spanner, not bad -5 lootas is only 50 points. 10 points more than grots. More tough, fewer wounds and models BUT more killy. why don’t you take some more lootas to hold objectives or whatever and they can plink while they’re holding it down eh? And they can get the loot too eh? Better than grots sometimes that’s why they call them lootas -if you put lootas on top of a tall building they get plunging fire and that notch of AP can be a real problem for some people (beakies). one time I put so many lootas at the tops of buildings and they can overwatch with some rerolls it ain’t bad truly plus they look even cooler up there -lootas

2024.05.20 05:17 throwawayyourhome Getting kicked out.

Throw away account because this person has already shown a massive disregard for my privacy and my boundaries and i don’t want this post to be used against me further so any and all identifying information will not be shared.
I was just served an eviction notice after the person I live with was out of town for two days. I was sent a text after they had left outlining things I needed to do to be able to stay within their house and I started to work on the things that I could feasibly get done before they got back into town. However, I was served an eviction notice while they were still out of town.
Before I was served the eviction notice, I was made aware of some texts that had been sent to a third party about me, which included some things that them and I afraid for my physical safety. Essentially the texts were along the lines of "if shes smart she wont come home tonight" after a message which out lined how angry they were with me for my lack of fulfilling promises I had made.
[Edit: These “promises” btw were things I have offered before and I have been turned down on many times, mainly paying rent and paying for gas money for rides. I was told to stop paying rent, I was told no every time I’ve offered to pay for gas over the past three years except for a handful of times I was told yes. The other promises I’ve supposedly broken just aren’t true, like apparently not taking care of things I said I would when I know for a fact I have been.]
After I read these messages, I blocked this person across all social media platforms, their shared account with girlfriend, their girlfriends socials, and their friends socials. I then made a little vent post about what was going on, which also included absolutely no identifiable information on the person i was venting about, and they somehow got a screenshot of it. I have blocked the person I feel has sent them the screenshot but have yet to test that out.
This screenshot they were sent was then sent to the third party mentioned above which essentially said I was no longer apart of that persons life or home.
I have not had anything directly sent to me except the initial text and then the eviction notice, and before they left there was no indication that there was anything wrong. There was even a discussion about some of the things on the list they sent me that they said they were okay with and had no issue with me doing.
Basically, all that being said, wtf do I do?
How do I safely retrieve my stuff? Where do I go?
I have nothing I can use to pack my stuff up, the third party I mentioned is not a housing option, and I don’t have a car nor do I have the money for my own place because I am sinking over half my paychecks into medical bills that I’ll be paying off for a number of months.
If it helps the most I’m willing to reveal about myself rn is that I am 19, make $9/hr for roughly 32-35hrs a work week, and while I have looked into my options for a car I cannot currently afford a car payment, insurance payment, and gas money on top of my medical bills.

2024.05.20 05:13 DemiFiendRSA 'Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1' Review Thread

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1
Reviews
The Hollywood Reporter:
Working from a discursive screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Baird, Costner is not at his best as a director with this kind of multi-branched narrative. He struggles to keep all the story’s plates spinning, as characters are sidelined and resurface with too little connective tissue.
Deadline:
For Costner, this is an impressive beginning, with the promise of more to come.
Variety:
There’s a hallowed place in cinema for multi-character dramas. But “Horizon,” simply put, doesn’t feel like a movie. It feels like the seedbed for a miniseries. Much of what happens is wispy and not very forceful; the film doesn’t build in impact, and it seldom seems to aim in a clear direction.
The Telegraph (4/5):
The film is earnest yet hopeful, with crisply drawn characters - but perhaps its full grandeur won’t be fully realised until part two.
Total Film (4/5):
A rigorous and handsome drama, finely hewn by Costner and his cast, this is an absorbing ride into the Old West.
Screen Daily:
Beautifully shot, with a deft command of period detail and a starry ensemble cast, Costner’s Civil-war set epic offers an old-fashioned celebration of the pioneer spirit – and a clutch of storylines that never quite have time to engage before the film moves on.
The Playlist (C-):
Despite the shootouts, some epic vistas (frankly, not as much as you’d expect), and a few fleeting moments of genuine tension, it all feels flat.
The Guardian (2/5):
In some ways, Horizon reminded me of Costner’s 2003 western Open Range, but that had a much more interesting performance from Costner and first-rate support from Robert Duvall and Michael Gambon. The acting here is far less impressive, and less directed. There isn’t much on the horizon here
Vanity Fair:
At least Horizon accomplishes one staggering feat: it makes one wonder if we were maybe a little too hard on The Postman.
Synopsis:
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

2024.05.20 04:58 Cheap_Cheetah_5182 AITA for telling my step daughter that she needs to causing drama and to grow up?

For context I (60 yrs old) raised my step daughter (21 yrs old) since she was 11 and have been married to her mom (60 yrs old) for 5 yrs. I know that my stepdaughter doesn’t have the best relationship with her bio dad & doesn’t like to talk about him much. But anyway she was telling me and her mom this morning that her friends have never seen a pic of her dad & that she decided to post a pic of her and her dad on her Instagram account yesterday.
I felt kind of off about it because I don’t want her to post anything that’s gonna start something since everyone thinks I’m her biological father. But we all go to church and my step daughter’s friends have heard about her dad but never seen a photo of him and she felt that it was time for them to see.
Anyway back to the story, I told my stepdaughter that she shouldn’t have posted the picture of her and her dad because it’s gonna stir conflict and that she’s gonna start nothing but drama. She tried telling me that it doesn’t matter because that’s still her dad and she still loves him. I tried to tell her that not everyone needs to know all the stuff that goes on between her and her dad. She said she wasn’t gonna tell anyone about their estranged relationship, that she just wanted to post a picture. But I think otherwise.
She tried telling me “it’s literally my dad. Why is that such a problem to you? I don’t see you getting so defensive when I post pictures of me and you? Why can’t you just understand that? What is so hard about this?? The church isn’t going to judge. At least I post about you online, I don’t ever see your 4 bio kids posting about you at all. They don’t even want to talk to you!!”
I got in self defense mode and told her “that’s different and you KNOW that. You seriously need to stop causing all this drama. You need to GROW UP! Maybe this is why you don’t have a lot of friends because you run your mouth too much and try to start something stupid every single time. It’s pathetic that you’re almost 22 yrs old and still act like a freaking child. Grow up man and go get a stupid job. I’m so tired of this. I don’t even know why you want to post about your dad after all the crap he’s said and done to you and when your relationship is barely making ends meet.”
There’s no way she’s gonna talk about my 4 kids like that and butt in like that. So I told her off and said that I said and walked out the door to my back yard to cool off. When I came back inside I could see that she had been crying and noticed tissues in the trash can. Her mom tried telling me that I crossed a major line and had no business to tell her daughter who is an adult what to & what not to post on her social media profiles especially when it comes to her dad. Now I feel pretty bad because of what my wife said but I dont feel bad about what I said, even though she told me I should be. AITAH??
Edit: the reason why people think I’m her bio dad at church [or anywhere] is because her dad is white, meanwhile me and her mom are full blooded Hispanic. My step daughter carries heavy genes for looking Hispanic. So people naturally think I’m her father.
