Friday night my boys and I all went out to a local dive bar. Some of the girls we are friends with met as later that night at the bar as well. So before the boys and I went out my friend “jack” says to me “hey I know ur super close with “nicole” and I was wondering if u could hook me up with her. I think she’s super pretty” and I said sure whatever man I’m always down to help. Nicole and I have been best friends since about freshman year of highschool and have casually hooked up multiple times. For reference I’m 20 and shes 19 and “jack” is 19 as well.
Well the boys and I are at the bar and all the girls come now. So we’re about an hour later I say to “Nicole” “jack thinks ur cute, he’s a good guy u should give him a chance” and Nicole laughs and reply’s with “you know I only want u out of this group right” and I honestly didn’t know what to say to her so I just smiled at her.
Jack sees me talking to Nicole and text me “what did she say” I didn’t want to be mean to the kid but I knew from the beginning he wasn’t Nicole’s type but I didn’t want to beat the kid down.. who knows maybe she would’ve gave him a shot and it worked out well.
It’s getting towards the end of the night now and Nicole texts me (we’re all still together just scattered around) “I wasn’t kidding when I said I only wanted you. Can we you leave with me I’m not feeling good and I want to go home. If not I’ll see if one the girls will leave with me” and I won’t lie I think Nicole is really beautiful and we both had feelings for each other before but never pursued anything. I ended up ubering us back to her house so she wouldn’t be in an Uber alone.
Well jack saw us leaving together and was fluming about it. He later texted me “why would u leave with her, I thought u we’re putting me on with her and now ur hooking up with her?” Now Nicole sees that text while we were laying on her couch and shes pissed at jack. For more context me and Nicole ended up hooking up that night but it wasn’t planned it just happened when we got to her house.
Anyways michael one of my best friends says it was an asshole move on my end for leaving with her right in front of jack, but I explained how she wasn’t feeling good. Michael is the only one that knows me and Nicole hooked up last night. Everyone else knows we hooked up before especially when I’m home on leave.

Hello Pureasoiaf :) I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on this Hamlet reference in Daenerys IX (AGOT) as I know barely anything about Shakespeare, but I think its a fascinating and very informative choice. It's referring to this part of Hamlets famous "To be or not to be" soliloquy where he's contemplating suicide after being tasked with avenging his murdered dad and really severely not feeling up to all that (emphasis mine):

'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream —ay, there's the rub: For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause—there's the respect That makes calamity of so long life.

To give a really butchered translation of these lines as I understand them, Hamlet is saying that death (the "consummation") sounds pretty neat right now, actually. But, using sleep as a metaphor for death, as a Christian he fears "what dreams may come", aka what if he ends up in hell. So he decides not to risk it.
Compare to this, which is almost identical (and as that's one of the most famous lines in the history of literature would definitely have been removed by Martin or his editors if it was in there on accident):

Inside the tent Dany found a cushion, soft silk stuffed with feathers. She clutched it to her breasts as she walked back out to Drogo, to her sun-and-stars. If I look back I am lost. It hurt even to walk, and she wanted to sleep, to sleep and not to dream.

This quote closes out the chapter where, after Rhaego's death, Drogo's catatonia and the collapse of the Khalasar, Dany promises to avenge Eroeh, and basically decides that it's her job fix the whole world, seeing as nobody else is going to bloody do it. But then she finds she's unable to revive Drogo using sex, aka the sole power she has been alloted, due to her position as "wife", (i.e. she is confronted with her total powerlessness), and any hope for accomplishing her promise dies with Drogo.
We're given startlingly (and skillfully) very little direct information about her state of mind during and after this, despite it being her POV, and rely mostly on surrounding context: all of those things are horrifying, but also later she gets dragons. But, particularly in light of her likening walking into the fire to an act of consummation itself ("This is a wedding, too, she thought." - Daenerys X, AGOT) I think it's worth remembering that Hamlet stuff, because in that soliloquy the "consummation devoutly to be wish'd" is not marriage, but suicide. And Dany essentially sacrifices who she was, her personhood, to take on the role of Mother of Dragons etc etc. And, in keeping with other self-sacrifices in the books, it does work, when prior to her stream of consciousness in front of the fire she had absolutely no idea how to make dragons. And also, just for fun, brings the dragons birth a lot more in line with other magical occurrences in the books too, as it's self sacrifice that seems to be the key ingredient.
My two cents anyway. I'd love to hear what others think, especially if you're more familiar with Hamlet. Why do you think that "to sleep, to sleep and not to dream" line was used? What meaning is it supposed to convey, and does it affect how you see Dany's journey, or her place in the wider story? Are there any other Hamlet references that you've noticed? Is there anything else in that soliloquy, or the rest of the play, that you think may come up in the future?

Ever since I was a kid, I've been good at school. Gifted classes a few AP classes here and there. Either way I maded it to a decent school and graduated with a Bachelor's in Games and Interactive Design, and an associates' in computer information systems but I can't seem to get highered anywhere. Ive sent out a literal 1000 applications and have been met with either radio silence or rejection letters. I keep getting told to keep at it and I don't know how much longer I can just sit in place. Its been a year since I graduated and I have nothing to show for it. Its gotten so bad I'm thinking of giving up on everything entirely and joining the military just to start wiping the debt away and hope it'll get me some of the help I need. It feels though if I join the military I'll be giving up on the education I have and it'll all have been a waste of time. I’ve (22f) been a regular smoker since 17 or 18, chronic smoker since 19, but I’ve recently put a paused on my cannabis use due to some acute health risks I may have. I do expect to get the green light that it’s safe to smoke again, so I plan on getting back to it.
For reference I seem to have hEDS though not formally diagnosed. I am diagnosed with POTS and it runs in my family. I’ve also got autism, adhd, gad, FND, probably some other mental stuff going on, and likely some kind of autoimmune or neurological thing that’s currently unidentified (occipital neuralgia and Parsonage-Turner syndrome seem to describe my symptoms well but nothing confirmed yet).
I’ve always been very sensitive to weed, to the point of never really being sure if I actually enjoyed it (I’ve decided I do, I just don’t like the feeling of being super stoned that most others seems to enjoy). I sometimes have a reaction that presents similar to cyclic vomiting syndrome, but I don’t really think it’s that as the reaction doesn’t really seem quite like anything I’ve read about. Recently it’s been causing me to get some acute symptoms, along the lines of nerve inflammation/neuropathy, circulation problems (probably the POTS), weakness, vision changes, tinnitus, and some other neurological symptoms that, as a whole, appear rather stroke-like. I don’t think it’s a vascular issue, nor do any of my doctors, but the risk is enough to abstain for the time being. Awaiting the results of a CT scan to hopefully rule that out.
I’m wondering how y’all react to weed, how you use it, what it helps with, what it hurts with, etc.
I’m not sure if my problems are directly EDS related especially since I have so much else going on, but EDS being such a risk factor for other nonsense I figured I should ask here. Yes, I should probably quit for good if it causes me so much unpleasantness, but nothing calms my ever racing mind better. I’d like to find a way to make cannabis work for me better, so any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated 🙂

In the classic Blanchardian typology, autogynephilic transsexuals overwhelmingly opted for SRS when compared to HSTS', transitioned in middle age after having children, typically worked in high-demand knowledge industries, and more importantly dressed conservatively and acted demure and passively in real life. Prime examples of the classic autogynephile are Deidre McCloskey, Lynn Conway, Joan Roughgarden, Reneé Richards, Anne Lawrence, and Rachel Levine.
The use of "AGP" as a slur referring to non-passing MTF's with strong autistic traits does a disservice to the general public knowledge of transsexuality. The classic HSTS, ironically, in their desire to preserve the penis and exhibitionist "bimbofied" personae and sexualities, are closer to the "girldick" MTF's and Thai ladyboys. Confusingly, the radical feminist contingent slurs this crowd as "AGP" while claiming sympathy for the "HSTS" trans male, the latter of which is very much more outwardly sexual and "proud." Lawrence notes the ubiquity of shame in the experience of the autogynephilic transsexual.
Further still, we cannot discount the possibility that the revulsion for "AGP's" is motivated by distrust and fear of non-normative male heterosexuality. Shaming of heterosexual male gender non-conformity, the possibility that a man might be "gay" or might give the HR lady "the ick" is seen in the popular LGBT and feminist zeitgeist, as noted by self-identified autogynephilic transsexuals Andrea Long Chu and Anne Lawrence. Thus, it's not unreasonable to understand AGP as a reaction to and internalization of new selection pressures introduced by the neo-eugenic Second and Third Wave feminist and gay liberation movements.

Hi friends. I’ve(24F) been seeing my (technically at this point) boyfriend(26M) for a few months. We’re both homebodies so almost all of our time together is at his place, just doing comfy stuff together.
A few weeks into our dating, I planned to go to his place after work, but he didn’t reply to my messages (for future reference, I don’t double text when he does that) so I assumed something came up and went home instead. 24 hours after his last message, he replied as if nothing had happened, saying he just fell asleep. I said I’d rather he not do that again, that he can ‘disappear’ but if we have something planned I just want at least an ‘okay’ when I send him a message telling him I’m ready, or for him to tell me we should rain check it. He says I have free access to his flat so it’s not like he needs to come get me down from the lobby, but I insist it’s just the only thing I ask, and he seems to be okay with it. It happens again a few weeks later and I tell him that if it happens again I’d block him.
All has been fine until yesterday. He disappeared for over a day, then yesterday messaged me asking to go there at 8pm, and asked if I could help him with a work document. I do it for him, send the document at like 7.40, he replies at this point. I get ready, and at around 8.20 I send him a message saying I’m ready and he just doesn’t reply. I waited two hours and then I just got my PJs on and stayed home.
This morning, he send me a message again as if nothing happened, asking if I can come earlier today. I ask why and he says it’s because of his internal clock, that he keeps sleeping and that he was awake for 30ish hours before falling asleep yesterday. Keep in mind he didn’t message me for over a day during those 30 hours. Also, he works from 7pm to 3am so it’s weird that his internal clock would make him sleep at that time. I tell him maybe some other day, and he gets defensive but not really anything too bad.
He says he needs to do planning when I come there (he works at home and doesn’t clean up before I get there, so idk what planning that is) and that he’s dealing with some stuff, and that I shouldn’t take it personally. Until then he’s being polite, and I keep my replies polite as well. I tell him I don’t ask anything at all of him, this is the only thing that I expect him to do. He changes the tone of his replies, saying I’m spoiled for having expectations of him, and he then brings up the fact that he pays for food and weed sometimes when I’m there. He literally never mentioned that being a problem before, and I tell him he should have brought that up. I have no issues paying for my stuff, or even helping him out financially, I just had no idea it was a problem.
He then starts talking about how he’s only bothering to reply to me because he hopes it’ll knock some sense into me, and that he gets paid less than I do so I should be thankful for the stuff he does. Again, I had no idea it was a problem, and he knows I got fired less than a week ago and I’m dealing with a costly and stressful legal case.
“You can come in and out whenever you want. You know about that, you know that I have you permission to walk in, so quit the drama. What is upsetting is believing you're really think you're in the right to be upset about anything, when l've been happily quiet about everything else” was one of his messages, literally just copied and pasted here.
I’m trying to be understanding of both his problems with me and his reasons for not replying when I’m going there, and trying not take it personally, but I can’t help but feel like my issues are being dismissed. I’m dealing with a lot in my life as well, so I know I’m extra sensitive, so I want to ask you guys to give me some outsider insight. Am I overreacting, friends?
Edit; also, just pointing out that we didn’t work together or in the same company. Some parts of the post make it seem that way, but before I got fired we were working at two different jobs with two different schedules, and I’d always be the one to change mine to spend time with him.

• How long have you been taking photographs?

I started taking photos in 2011, I was working as a company grip on George Lucas’ “Red Tails” and met Philip Bloom. Philip was working as a cinematographer specializing in DSLR videography. While I was having a conversation on set with him, he mentioned that the canon t2i had the same sensor as the 7d that we were using for principal photography and that they only cost $699. I went and bought one that weekend. I still have it. My 3 year old son uses it with the 18-200 kit lens as his learner now.

• Why do you take photographs? What are you looking to get out of it?

I take photographs as an attempt to tell a story in a single frame. Working on motion pictures has trained me in the complexity of telling stories at 24 frames per second. I am focused on learning composition as a single frame storyteller so that when I decide to shoot a motion picture film, I will be able to draw on that understanding. Though, admittedly, most of my photography these days is focused on documenting my two young children.

• What inspired you to take this (group of) photo(s)?

This photo was a spur of the moment decision. It was during a commercial we were shooting for Siggi’s Yogurt. I was watching a set dresser skim the duckweed off the pond with the paddle of the canoe and I realized that if I ran down to the edge of the water and got my placement right on his next paddle back, I might be able to get him centered in the pond with the atmosphere from the smoke machine playing behind him. This was the first frame on a roll of Kodak Gold 200.

• Do you self develop or get a lab to process your film?

I have a lab do all of my film these days. When I was starting out, I would tank develop my 4x5 B&W, but after I ruined a batch that were photos of my cousin by using developer that was fully saturated, I haven’t trusted myself to do it since. I’ve had the good fortune to use Underdog Film Lab in Oakland, California, primarily for the last couple of months and I highly recommend them.

• What first interested you in analog photography?

My friend who I have known for twenty years dragged me to the local camera shop and twisted my arm into buying a 4x5 technika and enough equipment to sink develop at home using rodinal with 320TXP and developing to completion. Using that process, we got low contrast negatives that had a very high latitude and could be shot at 800iso allowing for some creative choices not often associated with large format, such as higher shutter speeds and more candid photography. I was hooked. I have since picked up two pentax 67 SLRs and a Deardorff v8 8x10.

• What is your favourite piece of equipment (camera, film, or other) and why?

It’s hard to choose just one piece of equipment, but my favorite combination would be the Deardorff v8 8x10 camera combined with E100 or Provia 100F and one of the focal combinations of my Cooke XVa set. I’m particularly fond of the two rear elements. In combination, they produce a 273mm lens which is slightly wider than normal for that format. Some of the images I’ve made using this kit are truly stunning. The other piece of my kit that I can’t forget to mention are my two Pentax 67s and 90mm f2.8. I love the focal length and quality of that lens. I have a 75mm f2.8 that I use seldomly but it’s also a nice one. I no longer care for the 105mm f2.4 since the slightly telephoto optical group is a little masculine for my style of portraiture and slightly too tight for the landscapes I find myself shooting on that format.

• Do you have a tip or technique that other film photographers should try?

I think everyone who shoots film or who wants to be serious about their digital photography should get comfortable and confident using a spot meter. The way I use mine is to decide in the moment exactly what in my frame I would like to be represented as neutral grey. Then spot that object and set my camera to that reading. If I am using it to spot meter a person, it’s very important to realize that the meter doesn’t care what skin tone you are attempting to represent, it will give you a reading to make that skin tone neutral grey. So it is important to decide what zone that person should represent and then compensate accordingly. Alternatively, carrying an actual grey card to spot meter in place of the subject will help you achieve an exposure reflecting reality.

• Do you have a link to more of your work or an online portfolio you would like to share?

I have an Instagram account that is mostly populated with images of my family, but it’s all film. I post my work there primarily. Eventually I will put up a portfolio, but my 3 year old and 9 month old sons keep me busy.

• Do you have a favourite analog photographer or analog photography web site you would like to recommend?

I am a huge fan of both Natalie Oberg and Alex Burke with the former representing a talented B&W landscape photographer and the latter representing a talented color landscape photographer.

• Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself or your photography?

I am a Filmmaker by trade. I see my photography as a way to become better at the job that I have devoted my professional life to mastering.

Hi! I got my CNA back in February and am planning on moving out of state. I currently work at a local bank and have never been a CNA/PCT. I'd like to be a CNA as I work on my prerequisites for nursing school. I just got my BLS certification and transferred my CNA to the state I intend to move to. I'd like to secure a job before signing a lease somewhere and have applied to 20+ jobs there this weekend. I've heard back from one place saying they only do on-site interviews and cannot do a Zoom interview. I'm starting to get worried no place will be able to do a virtual interview. Sam Altman quashes search engine launch rumors

iOS 18 iPhones may soon have ChatGPT

OpenAI will bring ChatGPT to iPhones. The integration is expected to happen with the upcoming iOS 18. This could significantly enhance the user experience and expand the capabilities of Apple's virtual assistant, Siri.
Parallel to negotiations with OpenAI, the tech giant is also engaging with Google's parent company, Alphabet, to integrate the Gemini chatbot into Apple's devices. These ongoing talks, however, haven't led to an agreement yet.

SoftBank’s Arm Holdings all set to come up with AI chips in 2025

SoftBank's subsidiary, Arm, plans to develop AI chips and launch them in 2025. Arm is establishing a dedicated AI chip division and targeting a prototype by spring 2025 and mass production by autumn. SoftBank will contribute to the initial cost of 10 trillion yen ($64 billion).
The AI chip business could be spun off to SoftBank. Negotiations with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (TSMC) and others for production capacity are underway. The move reflects rising demand for AI chips, which has boosted Arm's share price since its IPO in September.

GPT-4o: 2x faster, 50% cheaper, 5x rate limits than GPT-4 Turbo

OpenAI unveiled its new flagship model, GPT-4o (“o” stands for “omni”). It provides GPT-4-level intelligence but is 2x faster, 50% cheaper, has 5x higher rate limits, and enhanced text, voice, and vision capabilities than GPT-4 Turbo. It also matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvements for text in non-English languages.
GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 ms, with an average of 320 ms, which is similar to human response time in a conversation. It is available in the ChatGPT free tier and to Plus users.

TikTok tests ChatGPT-powered search results

TikTok is testing a new search feature that uses AI to generate results for some queries. For certain search terms, like recipes or product recommendations, TikTok will display AI-generated answers at the top of the results. These answers are powered by ChatGPT, and when you click on one of these AI results, it takes you to a page with a full response.
TikTok is also testing "search highlights," which appear at the top of some searches. However, it's unclear whether these highlights are AI-generated.

Meta explores AI-assisted earphones with built-in cameras

Meta is currently exploring AI-powered earphones with built-in cameras. The project is known internally as “Camerabuds;” however, it’s uncertain if the final product will be in-ear earbuds or over-ear headphones. The cameras let the AI take in surrounding information visually, allowing it to translate foreign languages, identify objects, and more.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly seen several possible designs but has not been satisfied with them. Outside of design, the major hurdle is fitting a camera and batteries in a tiny device like an earbud.

Google announced a wide array of updates across its AI ecosystem

Major headlines were Project Astra, an AI agent that can see and hear users in real time, and AI teammates that can answer questions and organize data within Workspace.
Google also introduced Veo, a high-quality video generation model, and significant updates to Google Search, including expanded AI Overviews, advanced planning capabilities, and AI-organized search results.

Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's co-founder and longtime chief scientist, has left the company. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the news on X, expressing his sadness and gratitude for Sutskever's contributions. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI's research director, will step up as a chief scientist.
Sutskever's departure comes amidst reports of disagreements with Altman over OpenAI's direction, mainly concerns about rushing AI-powered product launches at the expense of safety. The situation escalated last November when Sutskever and OpenAI CTO Mira Murati approached the company's previous board to express their concerns, leading to a brief attempt to fire Altman. Apple unveils AI-enhanced eye tracking, music haptics, voice shortcuts

Stability AI seeks buyer amid financial woes

Stability AI has been in discussions with at least one potential buyer recently regarding a possible sale. Stability AI also owes nearly $100 million in outstanding bills to cloud computing providers and other entities.

• The deal will also enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to redditors and mods. Reddit will be building on OpenAI’s platform of AI models to bring its powerful vision to life.
• Lastly, OpenAI will become a Reddit advertising partner.

OpenAI introduces improvements to data analysis in ChatGPT

OpenAI is rolling out enhancements to data analysis:

• Upload the latest file versions directly from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. This allows ChatGPT to understand your Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint files more quickly
• Interact with tables and charts in a new expandable view
• Customize and interact with bar, line, pie, and scatter plot charts in the conversation.

GenZ and millennials optimistic about GenAI use at work: Deloitte Survey

Deloitte’s 2024 Gen Z and Millennial Survey connected with more than 22,800 respondents in 44 countries to explore their attitudes about work and the world around them. One of the key findings was that Gen Zs and millennials are feeling uncertain about GenAI and its potential impact on their careers.
However, respondents who frequently use GenAI at work are more likely to say they feel excitement about, and trust in the technology. Frequent users of GenAI are also more likely to believe it will free up their time, improve the way they work, and improve their work/life balance.
But, conversely, the more a respondent uses GenAI the more likely they are to have some concerns as well.

For context I'm applying for experimental high energy physics phd! I double majored in philosophy and physics and have 3 lors from my physics research experiences! I have had classes (at the grad level) in philosophy with a professor and have done some interesting philosophy of scientific explanation ans philosophy of physics work with them for seminar papers and have a good connection.
Is it worth getting that 4th letter of rec to showcase my research skills I'm another field? Thanks!

I (21NB) have been talking to this guy (26M) for about two and a half weeks. We met at a show in my hometown (he was the guitarist for the opening band) and pretty much immediately hit it off. He stood so close to me his hair was brushing up against the side of my head and he got so excited talking about guitars I couldn't help but immediately develop a crush on him (I'm a guitarist too). We talked for a bit, I went back and watched the headliner perform, and then when I ran into him later, he gave me the guitar pick he'd performed with that night and called me by name.
I pretty much immediately left afterwards, super nervous and giddy about the whole thing, and a few hours later ended up finding his band (and by extent, him) on social media. As soon as I followed him (literally less than a minute is not an exaggeration) he followed me back and sent me a text telling me to have a good night and that it was great talking to me. He even spelled my unusual name correctly, which means he looked at my page.
We've been chatting for a few weeks. He asks me about myself, seems really happy to talk to me, and sends me videos of his band sometimes. He's talked about what he does for work, the music he listens to, etc. I know him way better than I ever expected to. It takes him a while to respond (he's got a lot going on), but he texts me at least once a day and sends me lots of :) and :0 emojis. Lots of omggggggs and lolllllls. He also seems to be interested in my hobbies and what I'm up to, even asking me to send him pictures of my art and helping me with my guitar playing.
But... there's kind of a big problem. He's in a completely different state from me. At least a two hour flight. And, yeah... I'm lucky enough to have flight benefits so I could feasibly see him if I wanted to, but I've also never been in a relationship. He definitely seems more comfortable talking to me than before, even sometimes bringing up stuff that could easily lead to more personal, private topics, but I've been kind of nervous to get into that stuff I guess.
I'm about 95% certain based on context clues that he's single, and it really seemed like he was interested in me at the show, but I just don't know how much I should let myself get invested in this. I also have no frame of reference to determine if he's even interested in me or if he just wants to be my friend because I've never been IN a relationship before.
The more I talk to him, the more I like him. He's really cute, he works with kids and he's genuinely just one of the sweetest, silliest people I've ever known. I'm REALLY, really starting to fall for this guy, and I'm just not sure how well I'd be able to handle another rejection if/when it comes to that.
I had some really traumatic shit happen to me last year involving me being SAed by a coworker who I had developed feelings for, and who did everything in his power to ruin my life after getting me to trust him. This has led me to be super cautious and I have some trust issues that developed as a result.
I just don't know what to do. Everyone keeps telling me to just enjoy it, but I just want so badly to know how he feels and I just don't really know what to do. I'd love to see him again but I don't know how I would bring that up without seeming too forward. I don't know what kind of timeline to expect either-- like, at what point would it be okay to ask to video chat? At what point could I bring up visiting him? How would I even go about presenting the idea of being in a relationship with this guy? I'm so lost.
