2024.05.20 00:00 gregstatic Epic doesn’t respect our time

I’ve been playing Fortnite consistently 2-3 times a week since Chapter 2 started and have always completed the battle pass (not always been able to get the super styles but never been too bothered). This season will be the first where I don’t hit level 100.
I’m only interested in playing battle royal and I feel like I’m being punished for it and the game is starting to become a chore. I shouldn’t have to play other modes I have no interest in to get xp and I shouldn’t have to resort to afk cheats or creator xp map glitches to level up either. The other modes should be a sweet bonus for the people that like them or something to entice new players, they shouldn’t be a necessity.
I’ve done every battle royal weekly quest, I did all of the Star Wars quests and the story quests and the new dummy quests and whatever other quests there have been I’m still only level 77. It used to be that you could do all the weeklies and easily pass 100.
Epic are no longer being respectful of people’s time and preferences and frankly it’s making me not want to play this game anymore and I know I’m not the only one.

2024.05.20 00:00 sosolidshoe Deleted cookies, now whole site broken?

So the YT algo took a wrong turn recently and it's been bombarding me with shittier and shittier recommends(99% of my watching is woodworking and warhammer, you watch one "hey 'member when Star Wars was good?" video and suddenly as far as YT are concerned you want to be forcefed culture war ragebait and then, apparently, anti-feminist rants) so I figure hey, since I watch logged out I can just clear my cookies and "retrain" it right? Now this is what I see when I visit any YT page:
https://i.imgur.com/a6bI3Hq.jpeg
All pages; homepage, bookmarked channels, bookmarked videos, links to videos, the whole site. Clicking the burger menu does nothing. The site is still whitelisted for cookies. Rebooted browser a couple of times. Turned off all my addons to check if that worked same thing. It's just totally borked - wtf is going on?

Got the next quarter of the walls done today!
Super thankful for the Star Wars kits for the sand coloring! And this section of my desert happens to have a ton of granite. I've got 3 stone breakers at the end of my sky road for processing sandstone.

2024.05.19 23:45 FarahZiva27 Regarding Clone Wars, what do you think is the greatest single shot in the series?

I’ve seen some conversations for multiple franchises regarding what the single greatest shot in the movie or TV show is, when you’re watching and you pause it and that shot is the best there is. Across all of clone wars, what do you is the single best shot of the entire series. For instance, to me one of the best shots is at 16:34 in the episode The Lawless, as the Mandalorian doors open, and Kenobi is standing there with his lightsaber on looking at the massive battle in front of him. That shot is just incredible.

2024.05.19 23:44 Cosophalas Cicero on the pronunciation of Latin (excerpts from Orator 151-61)

I recently finished reading Cicero's Orator. It is a rather wide-ranging treatise that Cicero dedicated to his young friend, Marcus Brutus, in which he lays out his personal vision of the ideal orator. He touches on many subjects, even prose rhythm, but I thought his brief remarks about the contemporary pronunciation of Latin were the most interesting. Since I know how interested readers of this subreddit are in Latin pronunciation, I thought I'd share them here with my translations. Enjoy!
* * *
Hiatus:
In the first passage, Cicero contrasts the use of hiatus or, from the opposite perspective, the prevalence of syaloepha, the blending of vowels, in Greek and Latin. When he talks about a "collision of vowels," he means a word ending with a vowel placed next to a word beginning with one, both of which were pronounced.
"That collision of vowels frequently appears in it [sc. Plato's epitaphios], which Demosthenes generally avoids as a defect. But let the Greeks see for themselves; we [i.e. we Latin-speakers] are not permitted to pull vowels apart even if we want to. It's illustrated by those rough speeches of Cato themselves, and all the poets..."
* * *
Omission of final s and phonetic change:
Cicero also notes the frequent omission of the final s in various words. The examples he cites below are all in the ablative plural. Multimodis in particular is known from Plautus, and even Lucretius uses it (1.895), so we know that the middle i, derived from multis, was short. I wonder whether that also the case in the other examples.
Cicero regards the phonetic change of due- to be- (as in duellum to bellum) as a similar phenomenon. His remarks about the contraction of words with -xill- are not in fact correct, because those words are in fact diminuitives (vexillum, orig. "a little cloth," from velum, for instance).
"But why should I go on about vowels? Even without vowels they [earlier generations] often contracted words for the sake of brevity, so they'd say: multi' modis ['in many ways'], in vas' argenteis ['in silver vessels'], palm' et crinibus ['with palms and locks'], and tecti' fractis ['broken roofs/buildings']. But what is more impertinent that the fact they even contracted people's names to make them more convenient? Just as the called war duellum bellum ['war'] and duis bis ['twice'], so they named the Duellius who defeated the Carthaginian fleet Bellius, although his forebears had always been called Duelli. But words are even often contracted not for the sake of practicality but for the ears: how did your [sc. Brutus'] friend Axilla become Ala if not because of the disappearance of a rather broad letter? The same letter the elegant custom of the Latin language removed from maxillae [i.e. malae, 'jaws']and taxilli [i.e. tali, 'dice'] and vexillum [i.e., velum, 'curtain'] and pauxillus [i.e., paulus, 'little']."
* * *
Contractions:
"The also liked to combine words by joining them together, like sodes ['please'] for si audes [lit. 'if you dare'], sis [also 'please'] for si vis ['if you will'], and just in capsis ['take please' = cap si vis] there are even three words; ain ['you say so?'] for aisne, nequire [cannot] for non quire, malle ['prefer'] for magis velle ['want more'], nolle ['refuse, not want'] for non velle ['not want'], and we even often say dein and exin for deinde and exinde ['then', 'thence']. And isn't it easy to spot why, although one says cum illis ['with those'], one does not say cum ['with'] together with nobis ['us']? That's because, if one were to say that, the letters would run together obscenely [i.e. cum nobis would produce the sound cunno, 'cunt'], just as they would have run together if I had not put 'together with' [in the Latin, the word autem] between them. That gives rise to mecum and tecum ['with me', 'with you'], not cum me and cum te, so as to be like those vobiscum and nobiscum ['with you (pl.)', 'with us']."
* * *
Syncopated forms:
It seems that, at least in Cicero's time, the syncopated forms of the perfect stem of verbs were conventional, as well as the shortened from of the perfect 3rd person plural in (-ere for -erunt). I wonder whether the form with -erunt made a comeback as Latin was learned by non-native speakers or perhaps from literary Latin. Certain Romance forms (e.g. Spanish amaron, Italian amarono, French aimèrent from amarunt) seem to descend from it.
"How about the way they [sc. proponents of analogy] forbid us to say nosse ['to know'] and iudicasse ['to have judged'] but order us to say novisse and iudicavisse? As if we didn't know in this instance that it is correct to say the full word and conventional to say the shortened one. Thus Terence uses both: 'whoa, you didn't recognize [noras] your kinsman?' And the same author a little bit later: 'You recognized [noveras] Stilpo, I said.' Sient ['they may be'] is the full form, sint the shortened one. You're allowed to use both. Hence, in the same place: 'Later, they realize how dear they are [sint] from lacking them, and how great dominions must be [sient] retained.' Nor would I criticize scripsere alii rem ['others wrote the subject'], and I know that scripserunt ['they wrote'] is more accurate, but I gladly follow convention, which indulges the ears."
* * *
Hidden quantity and aspiration:
Cicero reveals that the i in the prefix in- is long before s and f, and similarly the o in con-. The introduction of aspirated consonants (such as the ch in pulcher) also was a change recent enough that Cicero avoided it until later in life.
159-60 quid vero hoc elegantius, quod non fit natura, sed quodam instituto: 'indoctus' dicimus brevi prima littera, 'insanus' producta, 'inhumanus' brevi, 'infelix' longa; et, ne multis, quibus in verbis eae primae litterae sunt quae in 'sapiente' atque 'felice', producte dicitur <'in'>, in ceteris omnibus breviter; itemque 'conposuit, consuevit', 'concrepuit, confecit'. consule veritatem: reprehendet; refer ad auris: probabunt. quaere cur: ita se dicent iuvari. voluptati autem aurium morigerari debet oratio, quin ego ipse, cum scirem ita maiores locutos ut nusquam nisi in vocali aspiratione uterentur, Ioquebar sic ut 'pulcros, Cetegos, triumpos, Cartaginem' dicerem; aliquando, idque sero, convicio aurium cum extorta mihi veritas esset, usum loquendi populo concessi, scientiam mihi reservavi.
"What's more elegant that this, which isn't the product of nature but some kind of teaching: we say indoctus ['unlearned'] with the first letter short, but insanus ['insane'] with it long; inhumanus ['uncultivated'] short, infelix ['unfortunate'] long; and, to be brief, in words in which the first letters are those in sapiens and felix, in is pronounced long; in all others, short. Likewise: conposuit, consuevit, concrepuit, confecit ['it settled, became accustomed, made a noise, completed']. Consult Truth: she will criticize it; refer the matter to the ears: they will approve. Ask why: they will say they like it that way. Speech should gratify the pleasure of the ears. I myself, since I knew that our ancestors spoke in such a way that they never used aspiration [i.e. h] except with vowels, I used to say pulcros ['handsome men'], Cetegos ['Cethegi'], triumpos ['triumphs'], Cartaginem ['Carthage']; but at some point--and late, at that--the truth [i.e., the 'correct' pronunciation] was wrested from me by the abuse of my ears and I yielded my manner of speaking to the people, though I kept my knowledge for myself."
* * *
Final s again:
And last but not least, Cicero notes the omission of final s in the Latin of an earlier generation. Evidently, it was fairly common to drop terminal s in general, but in contrast to the examples with which we began (like multimodis), the omission occurred in single words, not in one of two in the same number and case.
"Indeed--and this seems rather boorish now, but once refined--they clipped the last letter of those words that had the same two final letters as optimus ['best'], unless a vowel followed. Thus, it wasn't a faux-pas in verse, which now the new poets avoid. We used to speak like this: qui est omnibu' princeps ['who is foremost of all'], not omnibus princeps, and vita illa dignu' locoque ['worthy of that life and station'], not dignus..."

2024.05.19 23:43 RareContribution5947 Will there be a new empire in the next star wars movie(s)?

Since the first order and resistance are gone, will there be new empires? If there is a new empire that comes to power, who would their leaders be? I would imagine since they are planning on 2 more movies to come out in the next years, some sort of empires must rise up. Is there any information released yet?

2024.05.19 23:42 DaisyAipom My thoughts on The Elder’s Quest blurb

I’m probably a little late to this since I only found out the title, cover and blurb had been released a few minutes ago, though I personally have mixed feelings about it.
I love that Leafstar and Tawnypelt are getting POVs, I was just thinking the other day about how we haven’t had a main series deputy or leader POV since TNP, and it’s gotten repetitive only seeing POVs from apprentices and young warriors- and boom, we finally get a leader and elder POV! I don’t really have any strong opinions on Leafstar and Tawnypelt, I feel neutral about them, but just overall having protagonists from a different age group and clan role than normal is a nice change to see. Leafstar going blind could be an interesting plot point too, I wonder if she’s losing her eyesight because of age or because of an injury she received in Star or Ivypool’s Heart (maybe she’ll get blinded in a battle?).
I really hope Moonpaw is Whistlepaw’s apprentice, it would be cool to finally get a main series Windclan POV, plus I’d like to see Whistlepaw more. I do think it’s more likely she’ll be a Sun x Night kit though, and I’d be fine with that too tbh since while it’s refreshing to see other clans’ POVs besides Thunderclan, to me Thunderclan feels like home. We’ve followed their journey throughout 7 arcs, we might as well continue- plus imo it’ll feel like something is missing if we go the entire arc without a single Thunderclan POV, especially if the next arc does have a Thunderclan POV, because then they’ll likely be a bunch of new cats and character development that happened offscreen. Thunderclan has always been a part (and often the center) of clan drama, if they just zipped out of there when trouble is coming it’ll feel a little out of character in a way, to me at least, like how Windclan used to be nice but then turned aggressive out of nowhere because of Onestar, and then suddenly dropped out of relevance with the new arcs. This may be an unpopular since I’ve seen a lot of people wanting Thunderclan to not have much pagetime/impact in Changing Skies- but I don’t want Thunderclan to drop out of relevance, especially if it’s sudden and without proper buildup.
Either way though, there’s lots of potential for character dynamics between the 3 protagonists, in every other arc the main protagnists are friends or siblings of around the same age, whereas in Changing Skies it‘ll be two older cats and one young cat. It’ll be interesting to see how that will that affect their group dynamic and how they work together.
Though only complaint I have so far about the main protagonists is how usually in arcs with an apprentice/young warrior protagonist, whenever they find out a conspiracy or get a sign from Starclan nobody believes them because they’re young and therefore don’t have as much experience or respect from the other warriors, and that slows the plot down because the protagonist is ostracized or has to go on a quest in secret- but now that we finally do get oldeclan leader protagonists, from the blurb it seems like they’ll still have to go on a quest in secret and deal with the clans mistrusting their judgement. I just want to see a leader or deputy protagonist actually respected by their clan and giving orders that will be followed, damnit!
For example, it was really cool seeing Firestar as respected leader in The Darkest Hour and leading the full might of Thunderclan against Tigerstar and the other villains instead of having to sneak around and keep secrets like he did in the earlier books, the cat was completely out of the bag now, everyone has the same amount of information, and Firestar could actually use his authority as leader to do something against the villains. This is something I’d like to see again, in the past few arcs none of the big decisions that affected all the clans were made by the protagonists, they had to tiptoe around the leaders and wait for them to make their decisions (which sometimes takes a long time), seeing a leader protagonist move the plot forward themselves instead of waiting for their superiors to make the decisions would be so refreshing to see. But turns out Leafstar’s clan is gonna doubt her instead of respecting her, which is a bummer. She’ll probably still have the authority of a leader and stuff so what I want to see could still happen, but I mean when Thunderclan doubted Squirrelflight’s leadership some of them didn’t follow her orders and the clan itself was not united at all, and what I want to see is a leader protagonist leading a united clan against a greater threat rather than the “civil war because of a controversial leader” plotline rehashed again.
Speaking of rehashing, basically everything about the blurb feels like it’s taken from either TNP or TBC. The Moonpool and the cats’ connection to Starclan being threatened? We saw that with Ashfur cutting off the clans’ connection to Starclan and the Moonpool being frozen. Twoleg construction encroaching on clan territory, with some of the leaders not taking it seriously or believing the protagonist? Been there, done that in TNP with the twolegs destroying the forest and Leopardstar and Blackstar not wanting to leave. An apprentice hearing a mysterious voice in her head, thinks she’s having visions, but then the voice becomes sinister? That’s basically Shadowsight and Frostpaw’s plotlines mashed together. It could be that the blurb is worse than the actual book (never judge a book by its cover blurb, right?) but I don’t know, if it’s one plot point being similar to another arc’s then that could be fine, but basically every plot point listed has already happened before. It gives off the vibes that the authors are getting lazy or running out of ideas.
Overall, while the contents of the blurb have been mostly disappointing to me, there are still new and unique things that could happen even with multiple rehashed plot points (such as how it seems like the protagonists will be trying to stop something that hasn’t happened yet rather than something that has already happened like in TBC) so I’m still holding out hope for a good arc. Tbh it feels like Changing Skies could either be the best arc so far, or the worst. It has lots of potential, especially with how the protagonists are different from the norm, but the writing of the plot is just as important as the distinctness of the characters, and if the plot flops I don’t know if even the best character writing could save it. I just hope the writers pull through and manage to make all the controversial elements work. 👍

2024.05.19 23:40 AtomicBugger The Termination of Predators (3)

[Previous]
Memory transcription subject: Governor Tarva of the Venlil Republic
Date [standardized human time]: July 12, 2136
The loud footsteps of the predators trailed behind Kam and me, practically at their mercy as N-04H carried Cheln, its arms firm against his wool. The humans had remained silent throughout the tour, keeping to themselves as if the stars dared to explode under their words. No doubt that they’re maintaining a presence of power.
My brain switched into autopilot mode, as I steered our group to the next stop: my office. However, the second I opened the door, I realized I had made a dreadful mistake. In this morning’s panic, I had left a TV on. The news was cycling through footage of bomb shelters across the planet. Government advisories played on loop in the background. They were speaking rather candidly about the humans’ foray, and the likelihood of mass casualties.
There was no point in turning it off, they were already aware of our fears. N-04H stared at the screen, motionless.
“Your fears are more numerous than expected,” It began. “Up close encounters stimulating fear are expected. This is not. Fear throughout the entire planet, not of a minority but of the whole population. This response is not logical given your reason.”
Oh speh, it figured something was entirely off…
“W-well,” I stuttered “, again, y-you’re the very first alien l-life–”
“The response is not logical.” It cut me off. It sounded… agitated. “No species would react in this manner on a whole scale to the news of extraterrestrial life for the first time. Based upon the given nature of the venlil, war amongst yourselves is unlikely, needing no reason for the bunkers… Why would you need the bunkers in response to us if we are the first ever exterrestrial life to be here?”
Both Kam and I just stood there in shock, as this thing had deduced something about our livelihood. It was smarter than we had expected. Oh speh, actually intelligent predators?! Oh we’re screwed!
“U-um, w-well you see–”
“Have you been lying to us, Governor Tarva?” It said coldly.
“U-um–”
“Have. You. Been. Lying. To. Us?” It asked again, stepping forward menacingly. It wouldn’t let me have the chance to defend myself as my voice was merely a whisper compared to its loud voice. How could it? It's a predator after all. It’s in their nature to be devoid of empathy and filled with sadism.
It set Cheln onto my desk, continuing to approach. It was corning Kam and I into the walls. I could feel my eyes watering as we both huddled up together. It stretched both of its hands out, ready to bash our heads against the wall and feast upon our corpses. Closing our eyes, we waited for the inevitable.
I heard a beeping. Opening one eye, I glanced at my desk, witnessing a report, though obscured by Cheln, on Venlil Prime’s orbit on the screen. A fleet had been detected in our space. May the Federation burn these monsters.
A soft hand landed on my skull. Panicking, I prepared to scream for my life. Instead, I felt its claws… scratch against my wool? Looking at Kam, he’s also getting the same treatment, equally as surprised as I am. It's... soothing… It feels nice despite the firmness behind it.
“You have no reason to fear us.” N-04H said. “The similarities between us and the previous aggressors are zero percent.”
“N-no reason?!” Kam spat. “Look at you! You’re a–”
“A predator.” It let both of us go, walking back to my desk. The 3D photo… Speh, I left it on my desk! The picture in question was of myself, at a conference with dozens of Federation leaders. It was obvious, to any intelligent observer, that those diverse life forms were not of Venlil origin. “We are not the first non-hostile species either, correct?”
“Y-yeah…” I said. “You’re not… H-how did you figure out that your species were–”
“The rest of the species in this photo follow a pattern. Side-eyed. Flat teeth, common amongst herbivores. No indication of carnivorous or omnivorous species.”
It took a while for my translator to process those unfamiliar words. Prey… Predator… half prey, half predator? What [bullshit] is this predator spewing?! Either way, it’s a sign of relief, showing how idiotic this thing is for believing in such a thing. Maybe there still is a chance to outsmart the beast.
“What?”
“There are no species that follow a stereotypical appearance of a predator. Only that of prey. Your reactions to us, which do not fit your views as prey, shows previous experience with other ‘predators’. Venlil fear is not by the unfamiliarity of the unknown, but instead of the opposite.”
“Y-you’re right…”
“Tell me about the other predators.” Silence blanketed the room with a heavy grip. Nobody wanted to explain what happened with the Arxur; not even Kam would offer pointed comments on that subject. “That is not a request, Governor Tarva.”
What words could provide an adequate description of evil incarnate? My eyes swelled with water as memories resurfaced. My father, captured alive on the warfront, shipped back piece by piece. The day the Arxur launched a gas attack against my daughter’s school and left her braindead. The slave pens, the irradiated worlds, the Venlil kept as cattle…
I buried my head in my paws, trying to hide the tears. Showing such weakness in front of the humans was the worst thing I could do. This species, for all its refined words, was cut from the same cloth as our oppressors. If they saw the extent of our pain, it would be weaponized down the road.
Before I could say anything, S-4R-4 walked into the room… When did it leave the room?! Where was it the entire time?!
N-04H didn’t bother to glance back at its fellow predator, instead saying: “We now already have the information needed. You do not have to say anything else.”
Another beep. Again from my desk. I stumbled towards it, looking at the screen as I nudged Cheln away. Another fleet had entered orbit. A Federation fleet. Oh we’re saved! Yes! Yes! Wait… they were already detected before…
Realizing the implication, I flicked my tail, gesturing Kam to come over where I stood, to confirm what I was reading. Looking down upon, his eyes widened, gasping as he came to the same conclusion as I did.
It wasn’t a Federation fleet that was first detected before. We both slowly looked up at the humans, the foul beasts in place next to each other. They knew… They knew! They were setting us up! Let the Federation burn them!
The report was showing that that the Federation Fleet had already made contact with the unknown one. With instinct, I went under my desk, searching for the panic button. It wasn’t there… it was ripped out.
Going back out, I saw that the humans remained still.
Silence. We were at a stand off, all four of us.
The human starts off: “No more lies, Governor Tarva. Let us settle this conflict diplomatically with the Federation. As equals”

2024.05.19 23:33 DEL994 What were the three most effective and dangerous Sith orders ?

Amongst the many iterations and versions of the Sith Order that came to exist during the very long history of the Sith and of Star Wars galaxy, which three of them were the most dangerous and effective as Sith Lords, enemies of the Jedi and conquerors of the galaxy ?
Which three Sith Orders came the closest to reach their objectives and/or truly didn't mess around and were the most terrifying enemies to have due to how terrible and effective they were as foes and a threat ? And what were the reasons for their dangerosity and successes ? And how would you rank them ?

2024.05.19 23:32 Mzonnik Would a hypothetical, fully faithful film adaptation of PoD be possible?

Would a hypothetical, fully faithful film adaptation of PoD be possible?
For the record, I'm talking purely in the context of the EU continuity. Having recently re-read the novel, I wonder whether it could have been possible to create a movie that's as faithful to the text as the prequel novels are to the films (here it would go the other way around of course). Or does the way it's written rather make it impossible to adapt 1:1 or nearly 1:1? Now, I'm not even talking about the exact visual descriptions of characters and settings as much, the novel not being based on any visual medium makes it clear it would be hard if not impossible - but rather the story itself.

2024.05.19 23:26 Trigger9913 24 [M4F] #Anywhere #UK - Looking for a partner

Hi all! I am currently looking for something longterm. I will accept people from anywhere in the world as long as they can make distance work. I'm not huge or too picky on what I want someone to be like, so i'll talk about myself and see what bites!
About me:
I have a great voice and accent, and so i like using it by voice calling my partner. Ideally you would like to call too!
I am 6'2 tall, athletic build with black hair and dark eyes. I have light brown skin. My hobbies include gaming. I play on pc mainly. My current go-to games are rainbow six siege, warzone, rocket league, lethal company and star wars battlefront 2. Im also into airsoft and practice MMA (brazilian jiu jitsu and muay thai) I would describe myself as easygoing. I am usually very light hearted and i tend to make others laugh. This doesn't mean i cant be serious though, i often can and am. I am also very big on loyalty and communication. I love trying new food and socialising with friends and family.
I am an engineer by profession, having achieved my masters degree a year ago. I love what I do.
If you are someone who is good at communicating often, and wants something real and longterm, feel free to message me to find out more! :) i accept any ages above 18!

2024.05.19 23:23 Helios_Exousia I want Total War Star Wars to happen only because it will delay the arrival of 40k hordes who will devour this subreddit far more than WH trilogy ever did.

Because when they do arrive, it will be all about them and their shitty IP.

2024.05.19 23:22 CyberDaka WoTC Take Back Star Wars RPG

I've really enjoyed the fifth edition play style and it has me pining for a complementary Star Wars RPG as it has been in 3rd edition.
Asmodee or Edge Studios has been holding onto this IP with what seems like no announced plans to do anything but reprints and now would be a great time for Wizards of the Coast to swoop in and pick up the IP to get a 5e version rolling.
I hesitate to say this given the open gaming license debacle, but they need to take a page out of Paizo's book with 2e Starfinder being developed to work in sync with 2e Pathfinder.
What do you all think?
