Peacock moss is a favorite plant of mine, but I’ve killed it twice as a house plant and am not willing to try again. However, I’m living in a more humid area now and redoing my parents yard. I recently discovered S. Ucinata can (allegedly) be grown as a ground cover here, and was immediately very intrigued. However, I also read it is hugely invasive in some areas. While I’m fine with planting non-native plants, I’ve been battling English ivy from the past owner relentlessly and would never want to create a similar situation. I just figured that since it’s a colder climate here in the winters, perhaps Selaginella would be limited in its ability to suffocate the rest of my garden?
If it is a viable option, any in ground planting and care tips appreciated!

Im 20, female, the only girl amongst 3 brothers (12, 18 and 28) and living in my family home. I am a full time electrical apprentice and do not make enough money to move out.
My family home is disgusting. I cannot even properly describe it to convey how bad it is. The bathroom benches are covered in hair, pubes, toothpaste, grime, gunk and god knows what else; all meshed together in a disgusting layer of filth. The sink holes are full of hair and grime, the shower is MOULDY and covered in soap grime as well as skin residue. I have cleaned this bathroom MULTIPLE times even though I genuinely have never contributed to the filth.
It has gotten so bad that I am struggling to clean myself. I cannot get myself to shower when it is in such a state. I have been cleaning myself with a clean rag, warm water and soap recently and my mental health is suffering. I can't even use the bath because it is covered in skin and soap grime and a lot of the times contains my brother's pubes and leg hairs because he shaves while he's in the bath and doesn't clean it after (WTF).
The toilet is always dirty unless I clean it (I'm the ONLY one who cleans it unless I beg my mum to), theres always at least 7 empty toilet rolls on the ground at all times no matter how many times I throw them out as well as random pieces of toilet paper on the floor.
The kitchen is a never ending mess, recyclables stacked up head high on the counters, an endless amount of dishes that rarely get done. I clean the kitchen but my brothers have absolutely 0 regard for keeping their living space even close to habitable so it ends up trashed within days. They leave their stuff everywhere, dirty dishes on the bench tops, food scraps, peanut butter, nutella; you name it! you'll find traces of shit on the benches almost any time!
I also had to deep clean the microwave because they keep letting food pop and splatter and just leave the mess in there to fester.
It is an absolute shit show.

Good evening! I used to be very spiritual, to the point where I would practice daily prayers and I felt very connected to the earth and in general to my spirituality. Firstly, I am aware this is an unofficial sub.
I own a Asus Tuf 4070 Ti and had to send it to service (ServisPoint) under warranty about 5 months ago due to overheating issues. I have a well ventilated case with 8 fans inside (positive pressure). Despite this gpu had 80 degrees temps with over 100 hotspot. I figured it could be dried thermal paste due to it being 1 year old. The service centre returned the item with an unreported damage on screw. I tried to make a complaint about this but they simply claimed it was there to begin with. I had not sent a proof of this to Asus beforehand as I was unaware of the infamous reputation of the service centre. The repair report also had no information regarding temperatures seen on tests after thermal replacement, effectively denying responsibility of it ever happening.
5 months after, gpu temps were keep raising and I found out that it had a pump out. The temps were 83-84 degrees (throttling) and the hotspot was 110 degrees. This was quite impossible to happen so quickly, I also work in computer repairs, none of the thermal pastes I used ever caused pump out in such a short notice. The shortest one was 11 months. The thermal paste producers also claim to guarantee their products for 2-8 years depending on brand. This could only happen if the service centre wrongly applied the thermal paste or used a counterfeit thermal paste. I sent it to the service under warranty again with proof of benchmark tests and thermals.
This time I well documented my requests in the RMA form and in the email following the RMA form directly to Asus. I pictured the gpu from every angle and sent it to Asus through email right after handing the gpu to the courier. I clearly explained that I did not consent to any of the repair or any actions without me directly notified beforehand and asked before proceeding. I left my personal number and included a formal signed letter that I explained I wanted the repair report to be thoroughly detailed and would not accept any unauthorised repairs. I also mentioned that Asus would be solely responsible if any unauthorised repairs were to happen or the requests in the RMA form to be ignored. Asus approved my RMA form, therefore, legally agreed on the conditions I included within the form. I own a Asus Tuf 4070 Ti and had to send it to service (ServisPoint) under warranty about 5 months ago due to overheating issues. I have a well ventilated case with 8 fans inside (positive pressure). Despite this gpu had 80 degrees temps with over 100 hotspot. I figured it could be dried thermal paste due to it being 1 year old. The service centre returned the item with an unreported damage on screw. I tried to make a complaint about this but they simply claimed it was there to begin with. I had not sent a proof of this to Asus beforehand as I was unaware of the infamous reputation of the service centre. The repair report also had no information regarding temperatures seen on tests after thermal replacement, effectively denying responsibility of it ever happening.
5 months after, gpu temps were keep raising and I found out that it had a pump out. The temps were 83-84 degrees (throttling) and the hotspot was 110 degrees. This was quite impossible to happen so quickly, I also work in computer repairs, none of the thermal pastes I used ever caused pump out in such a short notice. The shortest one was 11 months. The thermal paste producers also claim to guarantee their products for 2-8 years depending on brand. This could only happen if the service centre wrongly applied the thermal paste or used a counterfeit thermal paste. I sent it to the service under warranty again with proof of benchmark tests and thermals.
This time I well documented my requests in the RMA form and in the email following the RMA form directly to Asus. I pictured the gpu from every angle and sent it to Asus through email right after handing the gpu to the courier. I clearly explained that I did not consent to any of the repair or any actions without me directly notified beforehand and asked before proceeding. I left my personal number and included a formal signed letter that I explained I wanted the repair report to be thoroughly detailed and would not accept any unauthorised repairs. I also mentioned that Asus would be solely responsible if any unauthorised repairs were to happen or the requests in the RMA form to be ignored. Asus approved my RMA form, therefore, legally agreed on the conditions I included within the form. I’m planning a 7 day trip and my main concern is feeling too much like we are driving to lookouts and then just getting right back in the car. But with that said, there are so many amazing places to see. Based on your experience, is it better to cover more ground since the terrain changes so much, or to spend longer time in less places. Here’s the very rough itinerary I have in mind. Would so love to hear what y’all think.
Day 1: Land in Reykjavik in the morning. Rent a 4 wheel drive car. Treat the day as primarily a rest and recoup. Consider hitting Blue Lagoon. I know some say it’s overrated, but it’s been on my sister’s bucket list for a while so would love to check that off. What was your experience with the Blue Lagoon if you went?
Day 2: Head out early and hit Hrunalaug Hot Spring in the morning before it gets crowded. Drive to Hella and hit some things on the way. Spend time in Selfoss before making way to Hella.
Day 3: Hike Landmannalaugar for a good chunk of the day. Spend night in Hella.
Day 3 +4 : stay in Vik for two nights and do things around the area. Would like to do one longer hike here.
Day 5: I’m stuck here, what city would you reccomend staying in? Any cities around the south that have your heart?
Day 6: spend the day driving back to Reykjavík and hitting up small waterfalls, short hikes, cute towns, etc.

My front yard (800 square feet) ompletely dried out and died last year during the drought (bad / lazy maintenance on my part). The grass was st augustine. Now my front is a layer of dead grass and weeds. My back yard and side yards are st augustine with a small amount of weeds. Neighbors yard that borders my front yard is st augustine.
Front yard also has a big bumpy patch. Back yard is double the size of the front yard
I don't want to pay someone else a lot of money to fix my lawn, was quote 2.5k to bring in sod and grade it.
My plan was apply scotts southern weed and feed to kill the weeds and nurture the little st augustine that's left, level the ground, then apply seed and fertilizer, but st augustine only can grow from plugs or sod.
As far as I can tell here's my options.

I had to hold off on posting about this for a few months, due to any potential legal action our property may have been dealing with, for the incident. I never received any final update, so I think I'm in the clear to share.
Opening scene: it's 10pm, Night Audit (me) arrives, walking thru the lobby to get to their post, silent greetings to other staff, as I walk past guests checking in.
I set my things down in the back office, put on my name tag, chug the caffeine of my choice, and mosey my way up front. The guests that were previously there have gone on their way, and it's just me and 2nd shift staff. Our schedules have a 1 hour layover, so we start chatting about how the days been, and any info I need to know.
20 mins pass
Cue the phone call; 2nd shift picks up, while I start printing paperwork. I overhear my coworker exclaim, "I'm sorry, you saw what now?!" Ears perk up, and I'm listening in, watching my coworkers expressions for any indication if emergency services need to be called, or just send Security to handle it. Their eyes bug out, at whatever the person on the other end of the phone is saying. I hear my coworker ask for a the location of the caller, and the location of the incident; she repeats, "tennis courts, and fitness center lawn." I'm radioing Security to come by the desk, to prepare for whatever is going down; it's about to be shift change, so we happen to have both Security Director (SecDir) from 2nd shift, and 3rd shift Security (SEC) present.
My coworker eventually gets off the phone and informs me, "a member witnessed a van jump over a curb, skid out over the lawn, then drive off towards rooms, on the nature trail. He says that the driver stopped the van, jumped out, then took off towards the residential area, stumbling and clearly intoxicated."
Oh boy! This is not going to be fun. We immediately pass the info to Security, and tell them to go searching for the van, and the driver, if possible. I ask my coworker to call local PD, to ask for assistance; we're gonna need all the help we can get.
While I'm keeping in contact on the radio with Security, I'm also texting the big bosses, keeping them updated on what's happening. Eventually, my coworker gets off the phone, just as the member who had witnessed everything, comes into the lobby, to retell his story. As I'm listening, we get a radio call from SecDir stating she didn't see anything by the fitness center, and SEC also stating he walked a bit of the nature trail, and didn't see the van.
How do you lose a whole ass van?! There's no way this intoxicated individual managed to get back onto property, hop in his van, then take off with it...
I offer to help look, and SecDir says she's going home; SEC goes with me. I grab a flashlight, a radio, and tell 2nd shift, I'll keep her posted, and to let me know when PD gets here; I apologize for her potentially having to stay late.
SEC and I head to the fitness center, and right away, I see tread marks that have completely destroyed the lawn between the lap pool and the tennis courts... SecDir didn't see anything, my ass! She didn't even look. These are very obvious, and hard to miss. Just as I start going to follow the trail made by the treads, PD pulls up, and 4 squad cars are taking off near the residential homes, spot lights on, searching for our intoxicated driver; while 2 other sqaud cars park by the fitness center.
SEC and I waive down the officers, both about my age (20's), and show the the tread marks on the lawn. We have a giggle over how ridiculous the situation seems, and survey the area for any damage, or signs as to wear the van may have ended up. We still can't find it... only damage we find is a broken light fixture, some ruined landscaping, and the obvious lawn. I ask SEC to stay back, and continue talking to the officers, while I walked down one of the guest paths, that leads to some rooms, thinking maybe the member had confused that for the nature trail (the trail circles the whole property, but connects to the guest paths).
The property is 88 acres... we have proof, via the tread marks, the van exists; it has to be somewhere!
As I walk further down the path, I see yet another broken light fixture. BINGO We're on the right path! I continue down, scanning for a path of destruction, to lead me to this mysterious van. I look up, and am greeted with the tail end of a vehicle, quietly parked at the end of the path, blocking the entrance of a couple of our rooms, no where near a parking lot, where it should be resting.

Unable to hold back my astonishment, I start cackling like a witch, at the absurdity of the sight before me; I then yell back to SEC, "Bro! I found it!" Before falling back into laughter. I had the mental clarity to search around the vehicle, seeing if anyone was inside; as well as to check for more damage; or to make sure no guest was potentially pinned underneath this beast.
SEC and PD make their way over, while I'm still cracking up, realizing I'm the closest person to a supervisor, so I'll have to stay as long as PD is here, and help file reports; what a joy my job is!
I tell SEC to call SecDir back, and tell her she needs to get back on property; she agrees, and has an ETA of 10 mins.

PD searches the vehicle, and finds... drumroll please METH! Woo-hoo! This fucker was high as a kite! It's a miracle he didn't hit anyone, driving over the guest path. No identification found in the vehicle, other than a note with a name scribbled on it, so PD runs the plates; asking us to check if the name matches with any guests in house. IT BETTER NOT! I have 2nd shift on the phone, asking her to run names for me; no dice. I also ask her to look up the name on the note; nothing.
We're informed PD is going to fly a drone over the property, to check for heat signatures, trying to find our guy, seeing if he's still meandering in the desert. Nada...
Some guests I had checked in the night prior, walk by, and see the whole ordeal, with me pacing around, chatting to officers, and SEC. I check in with them, asking if they happened to see anything, or if they were just coming back? They had been out all night, and were just getting in; they ask what's happened, and if it's OK to watch; I'm not stopping them, I think it's funny as hell; they pull up their patio furniture, and peek over their wall to watch PD, SEC and I plan how to get the van out. Other guests come by, having just checked in, and warned of the chaos going on, and ask for directions to their room; I point them in the direction, apologizing for the disturbance, and getting a giggle from them, as they ask if every night is this exciting? "Gods I hope not!"
SecDir is back on site, and the big bosses have said they want to remove the van. Perfect! How...?
PD offers to get a tow truck to remove it, but that risks causing more damage to the property. Yeah... no. Let's try avoiding adding more damage to the landscaping, because I know grounds is gonna be pissed when they see what's happened to the lawn, and some of the perfectly curated plants on the path. Lucky us, while searching the vehicle, PD found the keys in the ignition! SecDir asks that I call our Front Desk Director (my boss), and ask how she wants us to get the van out; SEC offers to drive it out, and we just guide him around, to make sure he doesn't do significant damage to the property. My boss gives the all clear, and we all take position; PD in front, with SecDir, and me following behind, to make sure the tail end of the van clears things, or offering a push, if we get stuck on decorative boulders.
After about 5 mins, of yelling and directing, the van is returned to the black top, that is a parking lot, with cheers and applause! PD gets final statements from us, and suggests we get the van towed ASAP, so if the original driver returns, he might come to the desk looking for his vehicle/keys; basically setting a trap, so we could call PD if/when he returns. I thank the officers, and my team, for a job well done, then return to the desk; time to begin writing reports, updating the big bosses, and searching for 24hr towing...
My coworker is all giddy from the excitement, as I show her pictures I had taken; kicking myself for not having recorded us driving the van out, to document any damages we may have caused, but, oh well, I'm sure the bosses won't mind. I eventually get a hold of a tow company, and am informed they can't tow the vehicle, until after 48hrs, due to a new bill that has been passed in my state; but, they can come tag the vehicle; perfect! I keep SEC informed, so he can update his reports, and give him the van keys to hold onto, along with the tow companies info.
My coworker finally decides to leave the desk, and wants to go work out at the fitness center; it's almost 2am at this point, and her gym is closed. I don't have a problem with it, so I give her a member key. I include this information for a reason...
Around 2:45am, just as I'm preparing to run audit, I get a call from my coworker; I answer, "is everything okay?" And all I hear is her say, "I think the guy is back!" No. Fucking. Way. She continues, "I was about to leave, when I saw, someone I thought was a guest, stumbling around the ballroom area, and I asked if he needed help. He mumbled, and I couldn't understand him. Then I realized, he fit the description of our missing driver! He's in the parking lot right now, just kinda wandering."
LET'S GOOOO!
I'm on the radio, calling SEC, and telling him to go to the parking lot; and to meet up with coworker. I then start calling PD, telling them our guy is back, and we need them back here.
SEC calls me after I hang up with PD and is laughing; he tells me our guy is just standing by the van, trying to open the doors, and just acting super confused; probably thinking, "how did this get here?" SEC says our guy seems to have given up, and is now smoking a cigarette next to the van; probably having realized he probably fucked up, bad, accepting his fate.
PD eventually joins them, and takes the guy to jail for the night, for trespassing; unable to prove he's a guest, or knows someone who is staying here. Unfortunately, we couldn't prove he was the driver, because we don't have cameras on the property, other than the ones watching the desk. The guys does confirm it's his van tho, so some legal savvy people might be able to clarify if he can actually get charged for DUI.
The next night, I come on shift, to find the van gone, and no update from management on any legal action that is being pursued.

I tell SEC to call SecDir back, and tell her she needs to get back on property; she agrees, and has an ETA of 10 mins.
I call 2nd shift with my cell phone, to front desk phone, and update her; she's laughing along with me; and I break the news that she will have to cover the desk, until this is sorted out. "No problem! Just take lots of pictures!"

PD searches the vehicle, and finds... drumroll please METH! Woo-hoo! This fucker was high as a kite! It's a miracle he didn't hit anyone, driving over the guest path. No identification found in the vehicle, other than a note with a name scribbled on it, so PD runs the plates; asking us to check if the name matches with any guests in house. IT BETTER NOT! I have 2nd shift on the phone, asking her to run names for me; no dice. I also ask her to look up the name on the note; nothing.
We're informed PD is going to fly a drone over the property, to check for heat signatures, trying to find our guy, seeing if he's still meandering in the desert. Nada...
Some guests I had checked in the night prior, walk by, and see the whole ordeal, with me pacing around, chatting to officers, and SEC. I check in with them, asking if they happened to see anything, or if they were just coming back? They had been out all night, and were just getting in; they ask what's happened, and if it's OK to watch; I'm not stopping them, I think it's funny as hell; they pull up their patio furniture, and peek over their wall to watch PD, SEC and I plan how to get the van out. (Sealth lvl 10)
Other guests come by, having just checked in, and warned of the chaos going on, and ask for directions to their room; I point them in the direction, apologizing for the disturbance, and getting a giggle from them, as they ask if every night is this exciting? "Gods I hope not!"
SecDir is back on site, and the big bosses have said they want to remove the van. Perfect! How...?
PD offers to get a tow truck to remove it, but that risks causing more damage to the property. Yeah... no. Let's try avoiding adding more damage to the landscaping, because I know grounds is gonna be pissed when they see what's happened to the lawn, and some of the perfectly curated plants on the path. Lucky us, while searching the vehicle, PD found the keys in the ignition! SecDir asks that I call our Front Desk Director (my boss), and ask how she wants us to get the van out; SEC offers to drive it out, and we just guide him around, to make sure he doesn't do significant damage to the property. My boss gives the all clear, and we all take position; PD in front, with SecDir, and me following behind, to make sure the tail end of the van clears things, or offering a push, if we get stuck on decorative boulders.
After about 5 mins, of yelling and directing, the van is returned to the black top, that is a parking lot, with cheers and applause! PD gets final statements from us, and suggests we get the van towed ASAP, so if the original driver returns, he might come to the desk looking for his vehicle/keys; basically setting a trap, so we could call PD if/when he returns. I thank the officers, and my team, for a job well done, then return to the desk; time to begin writing reports, updating the big bosses, and searching for 24hr towing...
My coworker is all giddy from the excitement, as I show her pictures I had taken; kicking myself for not having recorded us driving the van out, to document any damages we may have caused, but, oh well, I'm sure the bosses won't mind. I eventually get a hold of a tow company, and am informed they can't tow the vehicle, until after 48hrs, due to a new bill that has been passed in my state; but, they can come tag the vehicle; perfect! I keep SEC informed, so he can update his reports, and give him the van keys to hold onto, along with the tow companies info.
My coworker finally decides to leave the desk, and wants to go work out at the fitness center; it's almost 2am at this point, and her gym is closed. I don't have a problem with it, so I give her a member key. I include this information for a reason...
Around 2:45am, just as I'm preparing to run audit, I get a call from my coworker; I answer, "is everything okay?" And all I hear is her say, "I think the guy is back!" No. Fucking. Way. She continues, "I was about to leave, when I saw, someone I thought was a guest, stumbling around the ballroom area, and I asked if he needed help. He mumbled, and I couldn't understand him. Then I realized, he fit the description of our missing driver! He's in the parking lot right now, just kinda wandering."
LET'S GOOOO!
I'm on the radio, calling SEC, and telling him to go to the parking lot; and to meet up with coworker. I then start calling PD, telling them our guy is back, and we need them back here.
SEC calls me after I hang up with PD and is laughing; he tells me our guy is just standing by the van, trying to open the doors, and just acting super confused; probably thinking, "how did this get here?" SEC says our guy seems to have given up, and is now smoking a cigarette next to the van; probably having realized he probably fucked up, bad, accepting his fate.
PD eventually joins them, and takes the guy to jail for the night, for trespassing; unable to prove he's a guest, or knows someone who is staying here. Unfortunately, we couldn't prove he was the driver, because we don't have cameras on the property, other than the ones watching the desk. The guys does confirm it's his van tho, so some legal savvy people might be able to clarify if he can actually get charged for DUI.
The next night, I come on shift, to find the van gone, and no update from management on any legal action that is being pursued.

2024.05.20 08:28 APeacefulWarrior Shadow Hearts (PS2) - A so-so start to a nearly-forgotten cult trilogy
TL;DR: Shadow Hearts is at its best when its reveling in its weird scenario and unusual character lineup, but suffers from a lot of issues common to early 6th gen JRPGs - and its biggest sin is that the combat is downright boring.
Shadow Hearts is one of those franchises that constantly comes up on 'best games you never played' lists, yet despite seeing three back-to-back releases on PS2, it somehow never even hit enough critical mass to even count as a cult classic. Instead, it's largely sunk into the memory hole.
Is it due to its first true entry being a pretty mid game? Maybe.
The Good
Shadow Hearts makes a strong first impression with its genuinely unique setting - the real world, in the late 1910s. Moreover, the first half of the game takes place in China while it was under Japanese occupation. I've never seen another game to ever have that as the setting, much less one from a Japanese developer! (They don't like talking about the Imperial days.) On top of that, the game is fundamentally horror themed, with a really interesting mashup of Victorian gothic, Lovecraftian, and Daoist horror tropes.
So if you want a JRPG with a totally unique setting, Shadow Hearts definitely has that going for it.
The game also features one of the more unusual casts of heroes to show up in a JRPG. By the end, your party includes:
Graphically, it's nothing special. It continues the 5th Gen method of using pre-rendered backgrounds with polygonal characters on top, and CGI cutscenes for major events. Honestly, at times it just feels like an upscaled PSX game, and rarely makes good use of the PS2's power. Still, the artwork is generally nice, within this style. Plus, the monster designs are genuinely creative, with some of the most interesting creatures I've seen outside of an Atlus game.
And it features one gimmick unique to this franchise: The Judgement Ring. It's basically a QTE, with a line sweeping around a round dial, and you have to hit the X button when it passes over certain hit zones. Every time you attempt to attack, or do any other battle action, you have to hit 1-5 marks on the dial for the action to succeed. Small red areas, much harder to hit, add power to the action, much like a crit.
The Ring of Doom also gets used for various other actions, such as haggling in shops, or performing actions on the map. Basically, you'll be spending a lot of time doing precise button-presses.
Unfortunately, this is where the game's good aspects mostly stop.
The Bad
Many of the game's problems are simply due to it being an early-2000s JRPG with the issues common to that time - such as battles being filled with overly-long repetitive magic spell animations that get very old, very quickly. Worse, because of the nature of the combat and its QTEs, you can't just play the game on fast-forward in an emulator. At least, not without constantly toggling FF on and off.
Making the combat worse is that it's simply boring. They don't actually do anything interesting with the Ring of Honor. It's just there to slow down your commands and punish you for not constantly giving the game your full attention. Otherwise, the combat is absolutely bog-standard stuff, with two lines of combatants taking turns wacking each other.
In theory, elemental weaknesses come into play, but their effect on battles seems absolutely minimal. Even the hero's demon transformations just grant a couple extra magic powers and extra-powerful standard attacks. The only other halfway interesting aspect is that the enemies are ruthless about spamming status effects, including ones which can make the Dial of Destiny invisible to prevent you from attacking! Which is just obnoxious, frankly.
To its credit, at least the game keeps the encounter rate fairly low. But that's faint praise.
Plus, of course, all the bosses are big sacks of hit points, leading to tedious 20+ minute battles as you whittle down their health. Attack, attack, heal. Attack, attack, heal. Attack, attack, heal. Neither side has enough attacks or buff options to actually make the fight interesting. Either you go into it with sufficient magic and consumables to survive, or you don't.
Likewise, while I love the setting and scenario, the actual plot is a silly cliche storm. A bad guy wants to destroy the world to save it. Our plucky heroes have to kill god. You've seen it a million times. I found the game was actually more interesting in its episodic moments, when the heroes wander into a town that's haunted by an evil spirit or such, and have to deal with that. By the end, the combination of the rote story and annoying/boring combat made me really hate trudging through the obligatory too-long final dungeon.
Piling onto the issues, I also really disliked the soundtrack. The main battle theme in the first half is genuinely one of the worst I've ever heard. It would have been OK as a one-off bespoke boss battle track, but it became downright grating quite quickly. Most of the rest of the tracks were unexceptional, and occasionally felt out of place (like a bouncy happy theme for a London slum?), with very little standing out.
And while the English voice dubbing in cutscenes and battles does have that early-aughts cheesy charm, it's surprisingly inconsistent on what got dubbed. Some characters even switch between English and Japanese during their battle cries!
Then on top of everything else, the game is absolutely FULL of missable content, including entire side-quests in new locations. Even important stuff like how to unlock your most powerful demons and attacks are gated behind completely unintuitive actions. And if you want to see the good ending, you pretty much have to follow a guide - not unless you're willing to religiously go back to every previous area and talk to every previous NPC, over and over after every plot beat.
In Conclusion
Can Shadow Hearts be recommended solely on its own merits? I'm not sure it can. The unusual scenario and Red Ring of Death gimmick just weren't enough to hold my interest, even with its relatively short 25-30 hour playtime, when the rest of the game design was just so mid. However, it seems that the sequels are considered much better games, so at least I'm still interested in continuing the franchise. Although I think I'll take a break before playing the next one.

Is it due to its first true entry being a pretty mid game? Maybe.
The Good
Shadow Hearts makes a strong first impression with its genuinely unique setting - the real world, in the late 1910s. Moreover, the first half of the game takes place in China while it was under Japanese occupation. I've never seen another game to ever have that as the setting, much less one from a Japanese developer! (They don't like talking about the Imperial days.) On top of that, the game is fundamentally horror themed, with a really interesting mashup of Victorian gothic, Lovecraftian, and Daoist horror tropes.
So if you want a JRPG with a totally unique setting, Shadow Hearts definitely has that going for it.
The game also features one of the more unusual casts of heroes to show up in a JRPG. By the end, your party includes:
- A loveable (sometimes) jerkass American as our protagonist, who can transform into demons
- A British Christian woman who prays her way to victory while smacking enemies with her Bible
- An ancient Chinese master of Daoist magic
- An overenthusiastic mercenary lady who likes explosives a bit too much
- A friendly vampire who's mostly there because he was bored from centuries cooped up in his castle
- A Dickensian waif, complete with newsie cap
Graphically, it's nothing special. It continues the 5th Gen method of using pre-rendered backgrounds with polygonal characters on top, and CGI cutscenes for major events. Honestly, at times it just feels like an upscaled PSX game, and rarely makes good use of the PS2's power. Still, the artwork is generally nice, within this style. Plus, the monster designs are genuinely creative, with some of the most interesting creatures I've seen outside of an Atlus game.
And it features one gimmick unique to this franchise: The Judgement Ring. It's basically a QTE, with a line sweeping around a round dial, and you have to hit the X button when it passes over certain hit zones. Every time you attempt to attack, or do any other battle action, you have to hit 1-5 marks on the dial for the action to succeed. Small red areas, much harder to hit, add power to the action, much like a crit.
The Ring of Doom also gets used for various other actions, such as haggling in shops, or performing actions on the map. Basically, you'll be spending a lot of time doing precise button-presses.
Unfortunately, this is where the game's good aspects mostly stop.
The Bad
Many of the game's problems are simply due to it being an early-2000s JRPG with the issues common to that time - such as battles being filled with overly-long repetitive magic spell animations that get very old, very quickly. Worse, because of the nature of the combat and its QTEs, you can't just play the game on fast-forward in an emulator. At least, not without constantly toggling FF on and off.
Making the combat worse is that it's simply boring. They don't actually do anything interesting with the Ring of Honor. It's just there to slow down your commands and punish you for not constantly giving the game your full attention. Otherwise, the combat is absolutely bog-standard stuff, with two lines of combatants taking turns wacking each other.
In theory, elemental weaknesses come into play, but their effect on battles seems absolutely minimal. Even the hero's demon transformations just grant a couple extra magic powers and extra-powerful standard attacks. The only other halfway interesting aspect is that the enemies are ruthless about spamming status effects, including ones which can make the Dial of Destiny invisible to prevent you from attacking! Which is just obnoxious, frankly.
To its credit, at least the game keeps the encounter rate fairly low. But that's faint praise.

Has a 350 trans with a shift kit. Pure steel no fiberglass body panels. Chassis fully welded by yours truly. Firewall was rusted out so had to cut out and replace,restored the cab, the bed of the truck is going to need a lot of fabrication work lots of rust. Has a 1975 ford 8inch rear end, rear drum brakes, front disk brakes. Running brake lines almost finished and Vega steering box. Buying miscellaneous parts here and there hopefully will have this vehicle done by the summer. Going to basically use these posts for memories. |
