Flea market point & shoot shopping guide help
2024.05.19 21:57 _MrPickles420 Flea market point & shoot shopping guide help
Hey there
analogcommunity :)
I'm based in Jakarta this summer and plan to scour some flea markets for a camera to document my adventures with. My hope is that I’ll find a sick P&S for much cheaper than I would in western markets. I own a few back home but decided to travel light and look for one once I got here.
I drafted a buying guide to help me scan a table of used cameras and quickly filter between junk and potential gems. My priority is on sharpness and quality rather than zoom capabilities or anything.
I’d love y’all’s feedback on this! Do you think I should add, remove, or recategorize anything? Maybe I should organize or approach it differently? It’s based on a mix of personal knowledge and input from Gemini. Tysm
I don’t think a guide quite like this exists here but sorry if I missed it in my search. Might be helpful for others at garage/estate/yard sales too :)

Analog P&S shopping guide 💎 Diamonds (Unlikely finds, definitely grab them!) - Ricoh GR1, GR1s, GR1v (Consider entire GR series if excellent condition) - Contax T2, Contax T3 - Leica Minilux, Leica CM - Nikon 35Ti, 28Ti - Canon Prima Deluxe (Sharp 35mm f/2.8 lens)
⭐️ Great - Olympus mju-II (Stylus Epic) - Yashica T4/T5 (T4 SupeT5 Super) - Canon AF35M (Autoboy) - - Minolta TC-1
👍 Good - Olympus XA series (rangefinder) - Canon Sure Shot M/Supreme - Nikon L35AF - Fuji DL Super Mini
🙅🏼♂️ Junk/Avoid - Pre-90s zoom models (except highest-end) - Non-branded cameras - Low-end models from major brands (Kodak, Vivitar, etc.) - Excessively worn cameras - Early digital/hybrid models
—
Also, I know there’s risk in buying used like this. I’ve had good and bad luck in the past with used cameras. I’ll include my inspection plan in the comments.

2024.05.16 08:16 mikecro2 How did veterans perform and which players made a difference (GW37)
This goes with Picks and transfers the veteran managers made this week compared to sample of top 100k
Summary: Nothing in it. Despite the fact that more veterans had kept their BB and used it. But more went Isak(C) on the differential. And a quick shout out to the top veteran (OR12) for team name Ederson, Ake and Palmer. Sweepstake on their age anyone? 60? (For younger readers, ELP, an excellent 70s prog rock band.) I do like OR2, "Pinkie and de Bruyne". A reference which is only 30 years old.

2024.05.15 19:02 arsonak45 Did I make a mistake purchasing the Z 100-400 VR S?
So I originally bought the 100-400 to compliment my kit and complete the “landscape trinity” in a sense, which includes a 14-30mm f/4 S and the 24-120mm f/4 S. So now I effectively have 14-400mm in reach across 3 lens, which is ideal. I also have the 105mm MC, which is sharp as a tack and I love it because I shoot a lot of macro.
Now I want to delve into birding a bit, and I’m reading a lot about how the 180-600 would be the optimal choice for birding. Some folks are claiming that the 100-400 won’t cut it for birds, and that it’s a good lens if you want macro-style capabilities, but something I definitely don’t need since I already have the 105mm MC. Some people are even saying the 180-600 trumps the 100-400 in IQ, despite the latter being an S-line lens. It’s giving me the impression that all-around the 180-600 is the better lens and that I may have purchased incorrectly.
So long story short, if I were to get into birding, should I swap my 100-400 for the 180-600? Or can I get away with using the 1.4x TC with the 100-400 for such applications?
Edit: I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming response and various thoughts on the situation. My final thoughts, considering all feedback, is that the 180-600 definitely trumps the 100-400 in wildlife/birding capability, but I also don’t want to compromise on the “trinity” either. Size and weight are a huge consideration; right now I can fit all three lenses in my Wandrd PRVKE 31, and all for not much weight, but that goes out the window with the 180-600. Also as one user mentioned, I’ve been looking at the macro overlap wrong, and can definitely use the 100-400 as a pseudo-macro in instances where I don’t have my 105mm with me, which will be quite often, because between the 105mm and the 100-400, my backpack will either take one or the other with the other 2 lenses.
I think I’ll work with what I have for now, maybe get the 1.4x TC to see if I enjoy the birding niche in the first place. If it captures my curiosity like macro and landscape have, I’ll invest in another more specialized lens separately. Also my camera body is due for an update, I’ll likely wait for the next big Nikon announcement to choose between the Z8 or the Z 7III, if they make one.
Thanks all!

All of you unconsciously prune information. Forget it. Feed off it at your own convenience. I remember everything. Everything. Constantly. The pain of losing my comrades. The sadness. All of the information that composes those moments…never leaves my brain for a second.
Nico Vorgeil is the head of Union's science division. An atheist turned anti-theist, he was recruited for his one of a kind skill in pioneering the understanding of the universe. The only thing that could push him even further was his own union with a woman that had intellect to match his own. However, when she died in childbirth, his Negation manifested, dooming him to suffer endlessly. He died in regret, having betrayed everything he stood for in exchange for a few fleeting moment with his late wife.
But now, Fuuko Izumo's on a quest to give everyone a happy ending. And Nico's the one she wishes that for the most…

2024.05.13 05:34 Adventurous-Tone-311 Just switched to the Z8 from Sony for wildlife, please help me with a lens decision
I’m thrilled to be a part of the Nikon community again and can’t wait to get to shooting with the Z8. What a beast of a camera, holy shit!
I’m a little torn on lenses. I can’t afford any of the 5 figure f/4 super telephotos, but that still leaves me with so many options.
I shoot mostly birds, and do most of my work handheld. I’m leaning towards the 180-600mm, but the 400mm f/4.5 looks insanely good for the price. Would it be a better choice with a TC?
Is the 600mm f/6.3 substantially better than the 180-600mm at 600mm?
And finally, are any of the F mount lenses capable of what the Z mount super teles can do? I still see a ton of people using the Nikon 500mm f/5.6E PF for birding.
So many options!

2024.05.06 18:59 burritocaca Thoughts on Image 8+Verse 1 for Houston
Although I'm still trying to figure out the solution to the foundational image/verse question, there are a few generally appreciated matches that are pretty compelling to me. They are Image 2+Verse 6 for Charleston, Image 3+Verse 11 for Roanoke Island and Image 8+Verse 1 for Houston and Image 7+Verse 2 for New Orleans. I'm not sold on Image 1+Verse 7 for SF yet (although I do have a theory based on that match that I feel strongly about, as previously posted), and am still looking at the others.
I went through one of my old theories for Houston, and here's where my head is at for that one. I'd appreciate any constructive criticism.
- "Fortress north, Cold as glass, Friendship south" - Agree with the idea that this likely refers to the Glassell School of Art and the Friendship Pavilion.
- "Take your task To the number Nine eight two" - I agree that this likely refers to the locomotive engine south/southeast of McGovern Lake at the time.
- "Through the wood No lion fears" - I don't agree that this refers to the zoo, but are directions to walk through this area of wood. (I leveraged another's image so ignore the red lines, but my edit is the light blue arrow.)
- "In the sky the water veers", "Small of scale" - I agree that this likely refers to the fountain that used to be in the southwest area of McGovern Lake (see previous pic) and the scale train tracks.
- "Step across" - I disagree that it means to step across the train tracks (perpendicular to the track's path), and think it means to step across on the tracks to the other side of the little bridge, here.
- "Perspective should not be lost" - Here is another interpretation that I disagree with. I believe that this is pointing to Image 8, with the instructions to maintain the perspective provided by the image, specifically to keep the entire Pioneer Memorial Obelisk, the reflecting pool and Lindsey Plaza, which are represented by the largest column in the image, to your left from this area looking south/southeast ("Looking back") towards (but not at) the locomotive engine.
- "In the center of four alike Small, split, Three winged and slight What we take to be Our strongest tower of delight Falls gently In December night" - I think that this may refer to four post oak trees, and strongly believe that this is the specific location of the casque.
- "Looking back from treasure ground There's the spout! A whistle sounds" - I believe that from the burial location you'd see what the viewer sees in Image 8, that is the largest column (representing the obelisk, reflecting pool and Lindsey Plaza) on the left, and the fountain's spout in between the two columns on each side of the old entrance gate (and possibly the other, smaller columns in between the two large ones at the entrance and/or other columns further in the distance). Here are the two columns that used to be on either side of the main entrance to the Houston Zoo, which looks to have been right here (based on this image of the park. (I emailed the zoo to see if they can/will confirm.)
Now for the interesting part. I dug up some pictures of the entrance, and found two things of note on the right/west column after running it through an online AI enhancer tool. I know the eyes often see what they want to see, but
check this out. The pattern on the front side of the right/west column looks awfully like the profile of a rhino's head. Plus, I found
this picture on the Houston Library's online resource page. From my untrained eye, using the latter image, it looks like the pattern could be the rough wrinkles of a rhino's skin (or just bird feathers). I'm going to keep chasing down images for each column's front side. I can't find a picture with a good shot of face of the left/east side. The best one seems to be
this one (touched up from this postcard) and
this one that is covered up by a mischievously placed tree branch. Argh! I have a phone date with the Houston Library tomorrow. I'll let you know what I learn, but I'm really hoping it's a camel head/body!
In any case, I strongly believe that the casque is buried among four trees or
four somethings right about here (overlaid with the perspective image arrow).
The area was there at the time, and only a few feet from the believed burial site posted
here.
The Houston Parks & Rec. Dept.
has several requirements,State%20of%20Texas%20per%20code) to lawfully dig on park property, one of which being the digger must be a qualified, state-approved archeologist, which I am most certainly not. I am also not local, so there's that as well.
Cheers.
Edit: I'm an idiot. Hermann Park is
not named after Herman Melville! It's named after
George Hermann. I thought the
Pierre; or the Ambiguities reference was a dead ringer for Hermann Park for that reason. I need to reevaluate the entire thing now. My bad. I'll still chase down the images for the columns, but yeah, unlikely it's a friggin' camel on the other side. Grr.
Final Edit: I was able to find an image in the Houston Library archives (the library was super helpful) that seems to have been duplicated on the right column, and it seems that it is not a rhino, unfortunately, but
a freakin' pelican (you can see the bottom left area is identical as the second image above where I said it could be feathers), sigh. It doesn't matter anymore, but the corresponding area on the left column seems to have
this monkey carved into it. At least for me, most of my theory goes out the window as a result (other than the 982 reference, which I'm somewhat holding onto still). Ah well, at least I have a Houston library card now lol. Keep on keepin' on, I s'pose.

2024.05.05 11:54 d1j2m3 Nikon d500 err issue
I’ve been occasionally having an err issue on my d500 with 120,000 shutter count
It happened at first using duracell rather than Nikon brand batteries, but now happens on my brand new Nikon battery.
Then it just used to be using my 70-200 fl ed with tc20, and then without the tc 20
Yesterday it happened with a 200-500, I was taking a burst but the last shot sounded different higher in pitch like a pinging noise
Usually fixed by pressing the shutter, taking the battery out for a few seconds, yesterday required both.
What could be going on? Shutter or electrical? Only happens with e lenses too?

2024.05.04 14:19 TravelinBri74 The Cost of Birding as a Sony user - considering a Nikon Z8
I am a long time Sony user (from 2018 - I have the A7R III and A7R V); and have gotten consistently more into birding the last few years. Given that the A9 III is approximately 6000 USD (and only 24 MP) and the A1 more than 6000; and there are no Sony birding primes below 6000 USD, I am considering picking up a Nikon Z8 and 600/6.3. I would rather stick with Sony given my significant investment (I love the 14GM, 16-35 II and 24-70 II), but they really make it expensive to get into birding (I am not sold on picking up the 300GM to use with a TC - and even if I were, that and an A9 III or A1 would still be more expensive than the Z8 + 600/6.3). I have strongly considered the new Sigma 500/5.6, but if I stick with Sony, I will likely splurge out for the A1 II next year (or whenever it comes out) and wouldn't want to get a lens limited in FPS.
As such, the Z8, even as a second system (or possibly my only system down the line) seems like a bargain at the same price as the A7RV. Has anyone else gone through this and do you have suggestions or advice?

2024.05.03 21:58 Benjamin988u Sigma 150-600mm Sport vs Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF
I currently own a Sigma 150-600mm Sport, but I am thinking of switching to the Nikon 500mm f/5.6. I am really wanting a lighter lens, but want to know how auto focus and weather-sealing compare. I will mostly be doing bird/wildlife photography. I find I am normally shooting at 600mm anyways, so I don't really need the zoom capabilities.
I use a D500 and also have a 300mm f4d + TC-14E II
I was also thinking about the Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6, but I don't really want a downgrade in optics over weight.
