Maxi-Challenge 7: Results
Welcome back queens, all of you! It was great seeing the eliminated queens again. I hope you all enjoyed working together. This challenge, you worked in groups, and will be judged as groups. So, on to the critiques!
Absynthe, Btch, and Anne Choví: An elemental group is a more expected theme, but I think you all did a nice job at giving me something new and interesting with it. I’ve seen a lot of elemental looks in other competitions, and yours still feel unique and fresh to me. Absinthe, your look I really love. The mushroom details are great, and I particularly love the mushroom lines on the underside of the hat. She feels very down to earth, as she should, but still regal and elevated. Btch, your look is very different from most other air looks I’ve seen (and created myself) but still gives air elemental. The recoloring here is beautiful, even the shadows in the hair match the blue in the skirt, and that’s even more impressive considering this wig is originally orange. This top for an air look is definitely not something I expected, and I love that you reworked it to fit an air look. Now, I do feel that the two of you let your sister Anne fall to the wayside. Anne, I really appreciate that you did not use any of the ocean items from the game. I don’t know what happened during your editing, but your look is very blurry. I can’t zoom in to see the details, which makes judging more difficult for me. I like that you incorporated green into this look so that it wasn’t all blue, but I feel that the balance is off. I would’ve liked for the top to match the skirt, and for the pink gems to be green. Since there isn’t pink anywhere else in the outfit, they stick out and draw attention when they shouldn’t be a focal point. The pink might have worked better if the other accessories, like the earring and headband, were also pink. Unfortunately, this look just isn't as striking as your groupmates’ looks, so it doesn’t feel like it belongs in the same group as the others. As a whole group, you had some really great interpretations, and I wish that had carried into all three looks.
Liz Onya and Pepper Red: Liz, you get major, major props for creating two looks when you were only tasked with creating one. Your story is incredible - I actually laughed out loud when I read that the princess is made entirely of cheese. That is the kind of creativity and unexpectedness I was hoping for. With your princess look, I knew immediately that she was made of cheese, and I could get that even without the description. The little holes on the skin were a great addition, it wouldn’t be a swiss cheese look without them. Recoloring the gold dress to silver was very smart, as it helps break up all the yellow in the look without seeming out of place. There is a small piece on the silver chestpiece that has drips, and those should be yellow, though. I’m mainly concerned with the princess’s health because it looks like she’s melting. Swiss cheese is normally solid, and yet shes all liquid. Just because she’s made of cheese doesn’t mean her outfit also has to be made of cheese, but if you really wanted to go that route, her outfit shouldn’t be melting. You could have used blocky pieces and made them look like cheese, and that would have had a better effect. The silver mask also doesn’t belong in the look for the story you told. If you wanted to keep the mask, it should have been included in the story somehow, because it just feels like you forgot about it. Great concept, but the outfit doesn’t live up to the story. Your second look was supposed to be Pepper’s responsibility (and I did tell you you didn’t need to make two looks) so I won’t critique it as much. While a bit expected, in terms of the pieces used, it totally fits a dancing mouse. The headpiece obviously gives mouse, and the rest tells me that the mouse is a dancer. Of the two looks, I feel the one makes more sense for the story. I know you had some difficulties, but your princess look unfortunately does not live up to what I’ve come to expect from you.
Raven Starfire, Tracy Martel, and Orchid Mitchel: You three did an amazing job with this challenge. While aliens is not the most creative concept, since we’ve seen it multiple times already in just this competition (not to mention other ones), the story you told was very interesting and unique. I love that Galilea the Good is not actually that good, that Briar the Bad is not actually that bad, and that Ursula the Ugly is beautiful inside. Throughout all three looks, I can see the family resemblance. All of the skirt shapes are similar, and the tops are too, to an extent. While Ursula’s top has a pointy shoulder and Briar’s and Galilea’s tops have rounded shoulder, the resemblance is still there as Ursuala still has a bold shoulder. At first, the difference in skin tone bothered me, but after thinking about it more, I actually think it works, since many sisters irl have different skin tones. I especially love that all three of you have crowns to convey that you’re all princesses, but that Urusala’s crown is the biggest since she is now the queen. That was a really great idea. Raven, your look very much looks like a stereotypical good girl, but the kind that isn’t truly all that good, as your story implies. Its simple, but very effective. Tracy, your princess really looks like a super-sexy bad girl. She doesn’t necessarily look evil, just not nice, which fits her description. I love this top and bottom combination, I haven’t seen it before and I wouldn’t have thought to put them together, but they work really well. Orchid, you had a really tough job making an ugly princess because if it was too ugly and all over the place, that would work against you. You managed to find the perfect balance between keeping it cohesive and making it look ugly. Its not overwhelming ugly, all the technical elements are perfect, but any sane person would never wear this. I hate orange, just in general, but with that blue, its even more atrocious. This look is really well-balanced, you easily could have overdone it by making it too over-the-top ugly, but you found just the right amount of ugliness. All three of you did an amazing job not only with your story, but with your looks too.
Miz Erie and Cali Rose: Miz and Cali, I absolutely loved your story. Its definitely unexpected, its really fun, and I love being included in the story 😁. Your looks do a great job of telling the story, but sadly, I don’t love them as much as the story itself. My main, biggest issue is that Cali is wearing the exact same outfit as Miz. I like the idea of a shark parading around as a human, and Cali’s look definitely sells that. I just think that using the same outfit when you were tasked with creating two looks is not very creative. I would have liked to have seen the shark on its own, before it ate Miz-ter Erie. Then you could have still provided Cali’s look as a third bonus look, with it being a combination of your two outfits. As for the looks itself, the little bronze circles on the top bother me. They don’t make sense in the outfit, and I wish you had either used a lower level of the top or recolored the circles to match either the gold tassels or the brown boots. That said, that’s my only critique of Miz’s outfit; the recoloring is very nice, all of the other elements work together well, and it very much gives pirate. Despite being nearly the same outfit, Cali’s look has a few other issues. For one thing, the blood does not look like blood. I presume the red dots are meant to be blood, but it just looks like bad polka dots. Something to think about is where the injuries are and where the blood would be coming from. Alternatively, if the attack was everywhere and the blood is all over, the spots should be shaped more like blood drops, and blood should be dripping of off the clothing. There are some clipping issues with the top and shark wig, and I was willing to forgive that because of the storyline, until I recreated the look in-game myself. In-game, there aren’t any clipping issues, so the clipping here must have been an editing mistake. I’m not really sure how, since full editing wasn’t allowed, but something went awry. The makeup was a nice touch here, it really helps sell the narrative that this isn’t the same person. The story is really great, it’s super creative and fun, and I just really wish that looks were more creative and polished as well.
Raven, Tracy, and Orchid, maybe you weren’t in the story, but all you were super good this challenge! Condragulations, you are all winners this challenge. Orchid, a special congrats to you, as you have successfully redeemed yourself and are back in the competition.
Miz Erie and Cali Rose, your story was super creative, but that didn’t translate into the looks. Miz Erie, I’m sorry my love, but you are up for elimination.
B*tch and Absynthe, your looks were great, but you let Anne Choví drown. You two… are safe.
Liz Onya, I’m so sorry my love, but you are up for elimination. You and Miz Erie will now looksync for your lives.

2024.05.19 20:39 TRMerc The cost of ending war

Princess Rolaea fell into a seated position on the floor as her Steward was positioned next to her. The other soldiers who were captured from the team she had been leading were behind. “I demand to speak to your leader.” Growled the Karvrithak princess as the humans walked about, almost gloating at their catch.
“You’ll get your chance. I gotta make some calls first.” Came a voice from behind view. The older Karvrithak next to her fake cleared his throat to get the princess’ attention. “You know, princess. Now that we are captured.” To which Rolaea interjected, “I wouldn’t have been if you had done your duty.” Making the older Karvrithak pause in annoyance. “There were too many between me and you for me to have carried out that duty; I have to now follow the rules for… that.” The princess froze for a moment. “You can’t be serious, Sarvik.”
Sarvik nods without looking at the princess, instead looking for the man he saw fighting with her. “Our culture is built upon tradition, even ones you might not wish to be a part of. You were beaten in single combat by a male.” The princess interjects, “Not true. Two of our solders were fighting with me.” To which Sarvik nods, “Which makes it an even more impressive feat.” He gets a growl of annoyance in return.
A human woman walked over, hearing them talk, “What is going on over here?” sitting down on a crate in front of the prisoners. Sarvik looked at the human. “Ah, maybe you can help. Who was the one by himself during the fight.” Sitting up, the human smiled. “That would be our fearless leader. Didn’t want anyone to risk their life as our formation required four in front of you.” Rolaea sneered. “You mean your trap.”
The human gasped at the accusation, placing a hand on her chest in mock surprise. “Just because your senses were not keen enough to notice us doesn’t mean it was a trap. We even called out for you to surrender as you’re surrounded, and you chose to fight.” Getting a nod of agreement from the Steward, who got an elbow for agreeing with the human, causing a grunt of pain. “That spot is a little tender from the fight.” Which got another one from the princess: “That is for your failure in duty.”
The human woman pointed a finger at the pair as if they were children. “Don’t make me separate you two. So, you were speaking earlier.” And Sarvik nods, “Does your leader come from a noble bloodline.” Which made the human smirk. “He would say he does.” Before taking a moment to pose and take a mock tone of the rag-tag group's leader, “My grandfather would tell me stories of how we were descendants of Spartan kings of over 4,000 years.” Getting a laugh from the woman and a nod from Sarvik, “Is there any possibility that is true?” and the human shrug, “Could be. It was a long time ago, and I remember hearing something about how everyone is related to royalty in some way or another because of mixing.”
Rolaea smiles. “See, his bloodline is too diluted. Also, I never heard of the Spartans so how much of a warrior family could they be?” Getting another laugh from the woman “They weren’t a family. They were an entire culture who just became part of a country known as Greece. They never died out or went extinct, they just started calling themselves Greeks instead of Spartans.” Looking back and forth between the two, Sarah started to smile more as she realized what the conversation had been about.
Sarvik nodded in understanding. “I see. What were the beliefs of these Spartans?” Causing the human to think for a while, “Well, I remember hearing the only way to get your name on a grave is for men to have died in combat or women to have died during childbirth. Both were seen as a way of supporting Sparta. They were fierce warriors; often, just a single word could keep an army out of the country. Oh, and marriage was some kind of ritualistic combat, I think.” By this time, Nick walked over. “What is all this commotion.”
He looked around at a giggling Sarah, a stoic-looking male Karvrithak, and what he could only assume to be a blushing female Karvrithak. Sarah looked up. “Oh, just talking about Spartian marriage fighting.” To which Nick sighed, “It wasn’t combat. Spartan men would meet up with the women they found attractive during the night and take them back to their barracks or someplace else.” Sarvik tilted his head some. “Do you believe Rolaea to be attractive?” Getting a wide-eyed look from the princess, “Sarvik, you stop this right now.” The human male looked confused and looked over. “To be honest, I never really thought of a Karvrithak as beautiful or not, but… I mean, if we weren’t at war… maybe, kinda.”
Sarvik nodded once more. “Then it is settled, the combat took place at night, and it seems all the conditions for both cultures are met, or at least enough to be considered valid under the mixed cultures doctrine.” Nick looked even more confused as he looked at the male Karvrithak, then the female who looked ready to die from embarrassment, and his second in command Sarah, who looked ready to burst from laughter and when he remembered what they were talking about, marriage, got his own look of shock and horror “No no no no no no.”
Sarvik nods. “You are to be paired with Princess Rolaea.” Which was what Sarah needed to hear to burst out laughing finally and almost fell off the crate. The whole thing caused everyone to look over, prisoner and non-alike. Rolaea: “We are in agreement there, human. There is no way this is going to happen.” Sarvik took a deep breath. “I’m afraid, as Stewart of the royal family, it is my duty to inform your father.” Nick shook his head. “No, there is no way I can marry a furball.” Sarah, for her part, finally fell to the floor before managing to get something out that wasn’t laughter: “Bum bum bum bum.” To the tune of Here Comes the Bride getting a kick from Nick, which only returned her to her crazed laughing state, which by now, more people started figuring out what was going on, and some more laughter started, only one from the Karvrithak.
Rolaea turned to look at which one of her soldiers was laughing. “Whoever is laughing is going to have their tongue cut out.” Before turning to Nick, “If we kill Sarvik, no one will tell.” To which Sarah’s hand shot up, “I will.” And Sarvik nods. “We have a second in agreement from the groom’s side. We just have to contact your father. He will agree to the cease-fire the humans have been asking for.” Nick looks down. “We would have to kill more than Sarvak.” When a cough from behind caught his attention, causing Nick to look back. “Command finally answered.”
Nick took a deep breath and pointed a finger at the Karvrithaks. “No speaking.” And then pointed at Sarah, “Pull it together.” As the now out-of-breath woman took deep breaths to get it back, “Ok, ok. I’m done now.” Nick walked over and answered the line, talking about the success at capturing the high-value target in their area and how it was the princess.
After a few minutes of talking, Nick returned with a different look on his face, and Sarah wiped her eyes, having cried from laughing so hard. “Oh, I don’t think I can survive another laughing fit like that. It was too funny.” Nick took a deep breath, causing Sarah to look up in amused horror as Nick spoke, “Command told me to contact the Karvrithaks and use any means necessary to get them to agree to the cease-fire.” And Sarah smirked while holding in her laughter and got slapped upside the head for it.
She screamed in pain, “What was that for?” and Nick smiled. “You said if you started laughing, you were going to die. I just saved your life.” Taking a deep breath, Sarah nods. “I guess, but you could have held back.” Rolaea’s embarrassment died down enough that she started to glare at Nick. “If you think for a second, I will marry you. I would rather die!” Nick held a finger up and bopped Rolaea on the nose to silence her. “Not getting married.” Turned to Sarvik, “Going to get Tony to agree to a cease-fire anyway.” And then turned to Sarah, “Someone is getting a demotion.” To which she replied, “Worth it.”
Nick sighed and walked away to a secluded area he and Sarah would talk, and Sarah started to follow. “Though, I’m in agreement with killing the princess; it will be a nice revenge for everything the furballs have done to us since the war started.” A hand going to her sidearm. Nick turned to her “Put it away, I don’t like the idea either. It could at least be enough of a distraction to get the upper hand or get some end to this war.” Sarah looked at him seriously for the first time since starting the conversation with the aliens. Nick nods. “You have a weird way of grieving, you know that. Your humor was bad before, but this is twisted. No, we are not going to plan a red wedding. We’ll use it as a cover to regroup and.”
Sarah groaned out of frustration. “Why are we even listening to the human collation? They abandoned us, and then when our resistance group got good enough, they contacted us and started demanding we follow their orders.” Nick nods. “Ya, not like they started giving us intel, equipment, trained soldiers,” causing Sarah to stop him. “Ok, ok, you made your point… still… marriage?”
Nick shrugs at that. “When we started fighting, I thought about how men used to throw themselves on grenades to save others… I’ve always been ready to do that…. I guess to save lives, I’ll have to take an arrow to the knee.” Before starting to walk back in, a smile returned to Sarah’s face; without turning, Nick simply said, “Knew that would get that cursed smile back.”
The two Karvrithaks had been arguing again, with the princess drowning out the stewart whenever he tried to give the transmission frequency to contact the king. Nick picked up a clean… ish rag and shoved it into the princess’ mouth. “Alright, fine I accept.” Getting a muffled scream of anger from the princess followed by what was surely an obscenity-filled tongue lashing, defeated by a rag. Sarvick looked at Nick, angry for the first time. “We might be your prisoners, but that is no way to treat the princess or your future wife.” Nick nods some. “Would you like me to remove it and risk going deaf in that ear?” Pointing to the one that was on the side of the princess. A momentary glance from Sarvik at the princess who was still trying to yell between attempts to remove the rag stuck on her sharp teeth, got a “For now. The signal frequency is 195.2515.234.202. Also, I would refrain from using your human slur for our leader. He doesn’t much like being compared to a human breakfast cereal mascot.”
Nick nods, then helps Sarvik to his feet and turns to Sarah. “I could use my second in command.” Gets a sigh of annoyance as she rebuttons the strap holding her sidearm while standing. “OK.” After approaching the coms the operator puts in the frequency and releasing Sarvick’s hands he types in a code as the image of the king of the Karvrithaks comes on with a roar of a statement “How dare you lay a hand on my daughter if she is not returned to me within one earth hour I will glass the planet as I would rather see her dead than at the mercy of you lowly.” As Nick decided to throw him off his game, “Calm down, Dad.” Causing the king to stop. “What did you call me, and why is Sarvik standing next to you?”
Sarvik coughed to grab the attention of the group and to make this more noble than commoner “It is with much honor and regret that I have to inform you that this human has successfully completed the right of binding.” This information caused the King’s lower Jaw to drop, and Sarah chimed in, “Funny you mentioned hand earlier because he’s taking your daughter’s hand in marriage.” The king looked outraged. “You’re going to cut her hand off for marriage!?” and Sarvik raised a hand. “It is a figure of speech, Your Majesty. Humans call grabbing another’s hand with your own taking. Often done before the rings are placed on the hand of the one being wed.” Nick and Sarah both turn to look at Sarvik, who doesn’t turn his head. “A steward must be informed on all relevant information.”
Nick turns back to the king. “As your future son-in-law, I ask that you have your forces stand down. Don’t want to accidentally kill a relative of mine, do you?” The king let out a low growl of annoyance as a spitting sound was heard behind the group. The princess finally worked the rag out of her mouth. “I object to this wedding.” only getting a yell in response: “I can’t stop it. If Sarvik has said the terms have been met, I would have to break years of tradition and condemn our bloodline to death to break it.”
The two humans went wide-eyed as they didn’t realize how seriously the Karvrithaks took their tradition. Turning his head, the king spoke solemnly, “Tell our generals to stand down and to return fire if fired upon.” The coms operator relayed the message to the human command, which quickly ordered a similar command. Turning back, the King looked like he was about ready to reach through the screen and strangle him. “Know this, human, if you have lied about your intent. I was originally planning on subjugating the humans, but I will exterminate your species if you are lying.” And Nick swallowed hard at the sudden realization that his plan of using this as a cover for the human forces to regroup was a bigger gamble than he first thought. Sarah smirked and turned to look up at Nick. “No pressure.”

Shadows is the next step forward for Assassin's Creed

Mr. KARL ONNÉE, Producer
--First of all, let me say "Thank you" from us Japanese, as "Assassin's Creed" is finally coming out, which is set in Japan!
KARL: Thank you for coming here today. I have been wanting to do this work for years, so my dream has come true.
--Why did you choose the Azuchi-Momoyama period as the setting for this work?
KARL: I chose it because it is a very rich period in history. It was a time of war and political maneuvering, a time of change from rural to urban areas, and also the birth of art. I also chose it because it was the start of the unification of Japan. It was a pivotal moment for Japan. Together, these elements provided an excellent canvas on which to tell the story.
--What kind of image do you have of the Azuchi-Momoyama period?
KARL: This was a time when the feudal lords of the warring states were fighting for power in the name of unifying the country, but it was also a struggle for control of trade. Portuguese missionaries and merchants came to Japan together. The Portuguese missionaries and merchants came to Japan together, and people who wanted a beautiful country and peace. This is the kind of image we have, but I think there was a mixture of various cultures and people's thoughts. And of course, there were the warring feudal lords. These are great canvases for the story.
--What do you think should be inherited from "Assassin's Creed" and what are the unique aspects of this game?
KARL: When people think of "Assassin's Creed," they think of stealth, but shinobi fantasy is not only a perfect fit for an "Assassin's Creed" game, it also fits the DNA of the "Assassin" brand.
What we wanted to do with "Assassin's Creed Shadows" was to push stealth even further. We started this effort with the previous game, "Assassin's Creed Mirage," but we wanted to take it further with new features. Systems such as light and shadow, grappling ropes, belly crawling, and a variety of tools available in the game provide a new experience.
The gameplay is also enriched by two characters, Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai. Players will explore and discover Japan through the eyes of Naoe, a local, and one non-Japanese outsider. The game is more dynamic than ever before, pushing the limits of technology and offering an experience exclusive to the first state-of-the-art consoles.

--The "Assassin's Creed: Valhalla," released in 2020, is based on the theme of "Vikings" and has been a huge sales success. As a Japanese, I feel that from a global perspective, the Japanese "shinobi" theme is even more niche, but what is your current response?
KARL: I would like to talk about how it compares to "Viking" fantasy. Both shinobi and samurai are exciting and celebrated as fantasy with power, and are widely discussed in pop culture, and we are very much inspired by them.
Shinobi were on our radar from the beginning because we thought they fit well with the "Assassins" brand, but we felt that incorporating a powerful samurai would create two different gameplay experiences and give us the opportunity to tell the story from two different perspectives. We feel that this is a powerful motif that can compete with the "Viking" motif.
--How did you like the setting of Japan as a subject matter for the latest model?
KARL: I think it was perfect. For example, the "Global Illumination" technology allowed us to explore the response of light and shadow. Some consoles are still called "Baked GI", but by using dynamic lighting and the power of the new hardware, we were able to explore the creativity.
We are now able to express not only light and shadow, but also the dynamism of nature in greater detail. Naturally, since it is set in Japan, we have never dealt with so many trees, and thus so much data, in previous works in the series. We also needed more data to seamlessly move various things at the same time because of the seasonal changes. The latest models have allowed us to realize our vision, and our ambition for this film and for "Assassin's Creed" will continue.
--Assassin's Creed Mirage marks the 15th anniversary of the game. Can we consider this work as the next step forward for the next generation of "Assassin's Creed"?
KARL: You are absolutely right. Mirage" was a tribute to existing works, but this film is the first step into a new era. We are in the era of modern equipment. With the new generation of our engine "Anvil", plus the opportunity to create a new era by using the power of the latest consoles, we are able to do what we wanted to do with "Assassin's Creed Shadows".
With technologies such as global illumination and dynamism, we are now making the game we really wanted to make.
--What are the four pillars you are focusing on in the development of this game?
KARL: We are focusing on four pillars.
  • The first is to create an authentic and dynamic world.
  • Second is the story, introducing a new form of storytelling to "Assassin's Creed" by introducing two characters with different stories and perspectives.
  • Third, there are two different action sequences. Samurai and Shinobi each have their own training elements and unique weapons. For example, in castles, each has a different positioning that they excel at, which makes a big difference in how they play.
  • And finally, there is stealth. We are promoting the importance of stealth more than ever with new systems such as light and shadow, objects in the environment, depression, and grappling ropes.
-- The launch is scheduled for November 15, 2024. What is the current development status?
KARL: Development is going very well. We are proud to say that we have done a good job, but of course it is not finished and there are still glitches. This is the result of all the work we have done so far. We are very happy with how things are going right now, and we hope you will stay tuned for more news.
-- I understand that "Assassin's Creed Infinity" was announced at the previous Ubisoft Forward and that this title will be included in the game? Also, what is the development status of that game at ......?
KARL: "Assassin's Creed Infinity" is introduced as an Animus Hub (*a hub that will function in the future as an entry point for the series), which we will talk about at a later date.
--What is your message to your fans around the world and in Japan?
KARL: We are humbled that our dream of creating a game in this setting has come true. This is a setting that our fans have been anticipating for a long time, and for us it has been a wonderful experience to work on a game that we have always wanted to make.
This game is the result of our love. We hope you enjoy it. We look forward to talking more about it in the coming months.

The Shinobi Assassin and the Legendary Samurai. Experience the different fighting styles created by these two characters.

(left) Mr. JONATHAN DUMONT (Creative Director), (right) Mr. CHARLES BENOIT (Game Director)
--When did you start the development of this work?
JONATHAN: Development began about four years ago, and research into the time period in which the film is set began immediately. There were a number of cool subjects that brought us great characters and story plots. I had a gut feeling that this was going to be a very good game.
--Was the Azuchi-Momoyama period chosen as the period setting from the pre-development stage? Did you have an idea for a major point in Japanese history, such as the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate?
JONATHAN: I started from the beginning of my study of Japanese history, but I began reading with the feeling of a student. Following the Socratic principle, you took the attitude of knowing nothing. As I read on, I found some very interesting settings.
I focused on the Azuchi-Momoyama period because I felt it was an extremely important period for Japan. It was a time of warring states, the need to unify the country, and the need to defend itself against the growing influence of other countries.
It was a grand and complex period, and there are many stories that can be told from different angles. Among the heroes of the unification of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Oda Nobunaga are best known among the outstanding characters in Japanese history.
Not only war, but also politics are involved, and they are moving toward the peace that will eventually come, with a good ending waiting somewhere in the middle. I strongly felt that this was a wonderful and interesting period that deserved to be featured.
It was also a time when the foundations of the arts were laid. Castle towns were built, the world changed, and people's relationships with each other and with art, as well as their inner lives, also changed. It was very interesting to explore this period, and I was strongly attracted to the characters who lived in this time.
-- Why did you choose the title "Shadows"?
CHARLES: From my point of view, there are two reasons. Shinobi hide in the shadows, so "Shadows" is of course inspired by that. In a way, this embraces the "Assassin" brand and shinobi.
There are other aspects to "Shadows" as well. There are "hidden things" in the game that must be discovered by the player, but they are hidden in the darkness in some way.
JONATHAN: Both characters are in a way connected to being shadowy heroes living in the underworld of this era. It's a cool title, if you can think of it this way.
--Why did you choose two main characters and two fighting styles? Also, what kind of combat action can the Shinobi and Samurai experience respectively?
JONATHAN: One of the reasons for the separation of the two styles is that from the beginning of development, we wanted to have two distinct and cool archetypes to play with: the samurai and the shinobi.
We also wanted to make sure that this fantasy was as close to reality and expectation as possible without being diluted. I also often felt the need to have two points of view in the development of the story, since history is rarely clearly black and white. The two protagonists provided interesting dynamics and perspectives on how to approach the game.
CHARLES: I think it is very interesting that in combat, both the samurai and the shinobi have special types of weapons. Therefore, the style of combat in this work is built on a more weapon-based approach.
There are weapons that only Samurai can use, and the same goes for Shinobi. The player can get a good feel for the two different fighting styles. And it is possible to switch between them.
--What weapons can Naoe and Yasuke use?
CHARLES: Both players have different types of weapons. For Naoe, we went for a more classic fantasy type shinobi. The chain scythe is a weapon that covers a wide area and can only be used by Naoe.
In addition, she also has a dagger used at close range, which can be combined with a hidden blade (Hidden Blade). Naoe can fight very quickly and efficiently with these.
On the other hand, Yasuke, who excels at overpowering with force, is given more types of weapons, some of which are firearms type weapons. They also have the typical samurai bow.
--Why did you choose to make the shinobi Naoe an original character and the samurai Yasuke a historical figure?
JONATHAN Even though they are well known in Japan, at least in North America, not much is known about farmers, what happened to them, and where the Shinobi came from.
So we decided to introduce a figure from Iga who is shrouded in mystery. We considered historical figures from the region, but we preferred a sense of mystery, so we came up with Naoe as someone who may or may not have actually existed.
As for Yasuke, from the beginning we thought that a story about the arrival of the Portuguese would be a very good way to tell the story of the crisis in Japan. The team liked the character Yasuke, and we thought we could use him to show the promise of discovering Japan.
We thought that if we started with a samurai already in Japanese society, he would be a very interesting and intriguing character, with concepts that we don't necessarily know. And it would also be interesting to see what happened to him. He starts out as a character who is already rooted in history, and we are curious to find out what happens to him.
I thought they would make a cool team, complementing each other in terms of storytelling, physique, and family background.
--What did you keep in mind when creating the scenario where the two main characters switch? What were some of the challenges?
JONATHAN: I wanted the audience to feel that "both are the main characters," but this was more complicated than it seems. Their stories overlap in places, but I wanted to make sure that as the game progresses, you gradually discover more and more about both characters. They have similar goals and motivations, but they are not 100% the same, which made it complicated and difficult to maintain their individual personalities.
Naturally, the quest can be played by either character. If a quest needs to be started by one character and completed by the other, the settings must accommodate both play styles. Thus, although it can be complicated, there are many opportunities to tell the story from one of the two perspectives.
Having two different points of view is a lot of fun, but there were some complications, such as having to use new technology in the conversation tools. There were some cool things, however. It is interesting that in the conversational scenes, the player decides which of the two protagonists speaks and they ask for different things. This is cool in a way.
CHARLES: Both characters are attacking the castle and at some point the player is asked if they want to continue with Yasuke or Naoe, both are interesting. At various points the player must make these choices.
The stories are independent, so if you want to know more about Naoe's or Yasuke's past, you can play as one character and delve into that character's story.
--Are there areas of action that differ, such as places that only Naoe, a shinobi, is allowed to enter?
JONATHAN: There are areas where both Naoe and Yasuke have different areas of activity. I can't go into details because there are a few surprises, but since Naoe can use a hooked rope, there are places that are almost exclusively accessible to her.
The world is designed to be enjoyed by both characters, and players can switch between the two at will.
Of course, if you want to reach the final point of the world or reach the summit through the ruins, then perhaps Naoe is the better choice. However, if you want to break through the fort head-on alone and open the way, Yasuke seems like a better choice. Of course, you can play with either character.
CHARLES: Each character also has specific actions. Naoe can hook the hooked rope to a specific spot and move like a pendulum, or hook the hook to a high spot and climb the rope to get to where she wants to go faster than Yasuke. However, Yasuke can use a shoulder bash to break down reinforced doors.
Yasuke can also perform parkour very efficiently in a more daring way. What can be felt when Yasuke performs parkour is how the crowd reacts. Because Yasuke is a samurai and exudes dignity as a superior class, the crowd reacts accordingly. Naoe, on the other hand, gives the impression of being more integrated into the world.
--Can you both use the Hidden Blade, Hawk's Eye, and other Assassin abilities?
CHARLES: Without spoiling anything, the traditional skills of the Assassins are mainly for Naoe. However, there is another mechanism called "Kantori" (tentative name) that can be used when you want to find an enemy or target person, and this can be used by both of them.
You can use free aim to look around, but you cannot see through walls. Yasuke can also be killed by stealth, but in a more direct and easier way. Even with stealth, there will be some sound, so it is a "stealth-like" approach.
JONATHAN: Kantori (tentative name) can be used to find many things in your current location. It is a very good guide for a certain area, but it does not take all the fun out of exploration. It is a good guide because you can learn a little more about where you want to go, but you are left with the surprise of discovering something.
-- Is there a skill tree that makes Naoe more combat-oriented or enhances Yasuke's stealth?
CHARLES: Both have skills that are more combat-oriented and stealth-oriented. Also, some equipment has effects such as increased resistance when attacked. We also offer perks that enhance your abilities in combat.
Naoe, enhanced to be more combat-oriented, has an advantage in melee combat compared to Naoe, enhanced to be more stealth-oriented. Both have a range, but cannot go in completely opposite directions. There is some overlap between the two, but we have made sure that the characteristics of each ability are properly felt.
--Please explain the skill system.
JONATHAN: Both characters share XP and level up together, but the rest of the system is a bit similar to that of "Assassin's Creed Odyssey".
XP and character abilities are available, weapons can be crafted to some degree, and various upgrades can be made as the game progresses. Weapons are not stand-alone, but for two, so each weapon has its own unique skill system. Players should not feel any discomfort, but this is a very different part of the game from the past.
CHARLES: There are two things that were very important to us in terms of skills.
First, we have to be very aware of archetypes. In Japan, there are distinct archetypes, such as the armor-clad samurai, the revolting monk, and the bandit, which are quite different. We try to make it clear to the player who is stronger, and we try to make that part of the leveling process as important as possible. Samurai are always stronger than bandits.
Secondly, player skill is added to the mix. The better you are at timing, reading attacks, understanding weapons, etc., the better you will be and the further ahead you will be.
--What is the volume of the map compared to past works? I would also like to know how you decided on the scale of this work.
JONATHAN: The biggest difference is the scale ratio. The mountains are not the actual size, but we wanted them to be true forests, consisting of trees of a certain size, so that you feel you are in a forest. To achieve this, we needed space.
We also decided to keep it close to a realistic scale, so we could feel the breath of many things. When we visited Japan and saw the castle, we were so glad we made this decision. Japanese castles are huge! Of course, we had seen pictures of castles before and thought they were big and magnificent, but when we saw them in person, they were astonishingly large.
And I wanted more space to explore the castle. Castles were built to be large battlegrounds, you know. You need space to build intricate walls for defense.
The overall scale of the map is similar to the size of the map in Origins. However, the scale ratio makes it feel more realistic. The open space leads to secluded areas throughout the game, which will be fun to explore. This sense of scale is a very interesting aspect of this film for us.
CHARLES: The story led us to choose which locations in Japan we would choose. The major events in Kyoto, around Osaka, and around Azuchi Castle took place in the same area, so we were able to focus on that.
JONATHAN: Of course, we had to choose a size that matched the game, but I think it was the perfect size for this story and type of game.
--Since the game is set in the Warring States period, is there a system that allows players to participate in battles?
JONATHAN: We see several battles in the story, and the battle at Iga is playable. There are other battles as well, but I can't talk about them right now. The game is set in the Warring States period, but it is not only about battles. It is a game that allows you to travel and discover that world.
--What challenges have you faced and what have you been able to achieve as a result?
JONATHAN: By making the big decision to go completely modern and demanding a very high level from the "Anvil" engine, we were able to increase the number of particles, create a more realistic atmosphere, and expand the graphical possibilities of the changing seasons.
This allowed us to work on a fresh new Assassin's Creed. This was a great opportunity for us to take a big leap forward in graphics.
CHARLES: Also, thanks to the new global illumination system, we were able to take advantage of light and shadow, which had a huge impact on the gameplay and stealth approach. For example, enemies became aware of our presence through our shadows, enemies gathered for warmth under a fire in the winter, or shadows through shoji screens depicted enemy presence, giving a new dimension to stealth.

By having two main characters, it is possible to show a wider range of angles and different perspectives.

(left) BROOKE DAVIES, Associate Narrative Director, (right) SACHI SCHMIDT-HORI, Narrative Consultant
--Did you choose the Azuchi-Momoyama period as the period setting from the pre-production stage?
BROOKE: I joined the project after the choice of period had been made, so the Azuchi-Momoyama period had already been chosen. This period offered so many wonderful opportunities from a narrative perspective. The complexity and duality of the period is well reflected in the characters of Naoe and Yasuke.
--What were you aware of and what were the challenges in creating a scenario where the two main characters switch?
BROOKE: From a storytelling perspective, I see it more as a wonderful opportunity than a challenge. When I write a story, I try to show rather than tell, and having two characters allows me to show what's going on from a wider range of angles and different perspectives. I hope this will encourage players to want to share their feelings with them.
--What do you think are the most important points in bringing original characters and historical figures into the game?
BROOKE: Both offer different and unique opportunities. With regard to Yasuke, I found him very interesting historically because we know some things about him, but there are many unknowns. So we needed to fill in the blanks in the story. It is important to note that Yasuke is a historical figure.
And in the case of Naoe, an original character, we were able to draw the story freely to some extent. The fact that she is a member of the Fujibayashi family and that her father is Masayasu Fujibayashi Nagato Mamoru allowed us to place her firmly within the setting. Because Yasuke is a real person but appears as a foreign-born samurai, the Japanese-born Naoe is on equal footing with Yasuke, although she has a different perspective.
--Will other historical figures appear besides Nobunaga Oda and Yasuke?
BROOKE: You will meet Luis Frois (a Jesuit missionary) at the meeting in Azuchi Castle. Also, Nene and Oichi will appear. The Japanese art renaissance that began in the Azuchi-Momoyama period blossomed in the Edo period, and you will also meet Sen no Rikyu, Kano Eitoku, and other important figures.
--Please tell us what year the story will be depicted.
BROOKE: I can't tell you what players will see, but I think it covers a part of the Azuchi-Momoyama period, from 1579 to 1584.
--I think the appeal of the series is to depict the struggle between the Assassin Order and the Templars while taking into account the history, but I would like to ask if there were any difficulties in putting the Azuchi-Momoyama period into it.
BROOKE: I don't want to mention the Knights Templar because I don't want to spoil anything, but the fascination and dynamics of this period are very interesting and provided wonderful opportunities for storytelling.
--How did you go about creating a world with a realistic feel of the Azuchi-Momoyama period?
BROOKE: We were very lucky to work with the Environment Team. The visuals they created for the game provided a great backdrop for the story.
The in-world experience added so much to the story. What we see from the stories and characters of this time period is complexity. I also believe that many of the people surrounding the World had their own struggles.
It was a very difficult time historically, and we see duality. Nothing is ever clear-cut and black and white. In warfare, two groups face each other and are confronted with different perspectives. But in the midst of it all, there are glimpses of hope for the future as we know it, which will later blossom.
--What advice did you actually give?
HORI: One scene that left a strong impression on me was the scene where Nobunaga's sister, Oichi, remarries Katsuie Shibata. In the original story we received, it was thought that the two families decided on their own without regard to Oichi's intentions, and Katsuie was portrayed negatively because he was more than 20 years older than Oichi.
So I spoke with BROOKE and the team and asked them to change it. Oichi had young children after the death of her husband Nagamasa Asai, so if her remarriage was to Katsuie, a trusted man who had served Nobunaga, she would have married him as a matter of course. When I explained that it was better to portray it in a positive light, it was a new discovery for the BROOKEs, and they were very moved by it. The rewritten version of the episode was very moving.
The other scene is the tea ceremony scene featuring Sen no Rikyu. Chanoyu is widely known to be translated as tea ceremony, but experts say it is a mistranslation. After researching the misunderstanding over here, I advised them, as far as I could understand, not to use a teapot or tea leaves, for example.
--Even we Japanese have a strong image of "ninja" as a fantasy. Did you encounter any difficulties with the theme of "ninja" in order to achieve a high level of fidelity to the historical reconstruction?
HORI: Ninja are certainly a fantasy, so I think it's a good thing that we can express ourselves creatively and without reservation. However, there are also dedicated ninja fans and communities around the world, and I am not sure to what extent they see the ninja as a real existence, or as an entity that existed in history.
Therefore, the extent to which ninja are represented in the game depends on the level of tolerance of the avid shinobi fans. I discussed this with the members of the development team. We did not have a specific policy on how much to express, but made decisions on a case-by-case basis. We decided on a case-by-case basis. We would say, "This is an acceptable creative expression," or "This is stereotypical", so let's not do that.
--I'm sure there are many references, but which one left a particularly strong impression on you?
BROOKE: The first book I looked through was "Nobunaga no Kouki" by Ota Ushiichi (Azuchi-Momoyama period, military commander and military history author). I was impressed by his personal observations as he recounts the details. We can learn a lot of historical facts from reading history books, but this author incorporated his own views so that I felt I could understand even his character and what it was like to live in that era, and I was completely drawn in. I was thrilled to be able to portray this time period and the people in this book.
--The drama "Shogun" which is set in a similar time period, has been a hit, and I hope that this work will attract the same kind of attention from game fans. I understand that you have prepared a "Discovery Tour" that allows visitors to freely walk around the game world with historical explanations.
BROOKE: I can't answer about the Discovery Tour today, but I am glad to see that interest in the setting and time period of the game is growing. I look forward to the day when we can bring this film to you.

Gathering a lot of information to recreate 16th century Japan and build a living world

(left) THIERRY DANSEREAU, Art Director, (right) STÉPHANIE-ANNE RUATTA, Historical Supervisor and World Director
--Please tell us what kind of materials you used as references to describe the field and the characters' costumes in the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
THIERRY: I have been working with experts and consultants for a long time, but for the characters, I referred to museum exhibits and books for their appearances and costumes. I visited several museums, did my research, and checked the materials with STÉPHANIE-ANNE.
Based on these, we created the characters. We also referred to descriptions in the books about the colors and the flags people carried. We used multiple sources, but we have checked them for historical accuracy.
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: For several years we had the help of experts, but we also did research with a Japanese studio and team. We used different kinds of sources to make sure the team got it right and had all the information they needed to reconstruct what Japan looked like in the 16th century.
We used museum databases, as THIERRY mentioned, but we also used inscriptions, scientific books, articles, and medieval depositions. For example, the Principles of Nobunaga has been translated into English, so we used that as a reference to describe 16th century Japan. I also referred to the documents of Luis Frois from the same period, which compare European and Japanese society.
--This period was also a time when there was a large influx of immigrants. Will you also depict the episodes, lifestyles, and culture of these people (missionaries, merchants, etc.) as well as Yasuke?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: Yes, it is important to introduce the presence of Portuguese missionaries and merchants in the 16th century. They influenced the course of warfare during this period and the changing power of certain merchants in Japan.
--I am wondering what castles, shrines and temples that symbolize the Azuchi-Momoyama period will appear in the game. Although the game is set in the Kansai region, is the Osaka Castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi ......?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: The era is represented by the construction of various castles and castle towns, so players will discover a wide variety of castle types and castles destroyed in battle. The Azuchi Castle, which is related to the name of the era, will also be featured.
THIERRY: Himeji Castle, Osaka Castle, and Takeda Castle are also available, and it is wonderful that players can visit and play in these castles. I think this is one of the strengths of the franchise, but all of the castles are based on actual historical blueprints, which I think is very unique, both as an experience and a learning opportunity.
The Koyasan Okunoin Cemetery is the oldest graveyard in Japan, which can also be seen in the game. There are too many to mention them all, but thanks to STÉPHANIE-ANNE and the experts, I think they are well described and it is wonderful that players will be able to travel to these places.
--The architectural style and decoration of the buildings is a different culture from the previous works in the series. What were you conscious of in recreating the culture and what were the challenges? I am also interested in the possibility of diving on the "Shachihoko".
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: The building team did a lot of research, and then we checked the results with experts and asked them to add the elements needed to build a great castle. We did research to recreate the decorations of not only the castle, but also the temples and shrines, and also to find out what materials were used to make them.
THIERRY: The colors also change over time, so we made adjustments to that as well. Of course, this is "Assassin's Creed," so you can climb anywhere and jump from almost anywhere. Exploring is fun.
--Japanese period games tend to be rather subdued, but were there any barriers to making it a worldwide production?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: It's a game based on history, and we want players to have the opportunity to play with history. This period is so fascinating and celebrated, and has had such an impact on pop culture, that we were fortunate to have the help of renowned experts to make sure we had all the information we needed to faithfully recreate medieval Japan in the 16th century.
We maintained historical fidelity in this film because it was a rich period with so much to talk about and we didn't feel the need to change it. It is a rich setting, so there is an experience that goes into fantasy, but keeping it authentic was our primary goal.
--In the main storyline, can we experience famous episodes from the Azuchi-Momoyama period (such as the Battle of Nagashino, the Honnoji Incident, the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, etc.)?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: You will have to wait a little longer for that.
--In the recent series, "Origins," "Odyssey," and "Valhalla," you can enjoy the connection to mythology and fantasy elements based on mythological themes. Will this work also contain elements based on Japanese mythology, yokai, and other fictional creatures?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: That is a very good question, but I will answer this one later.
--This work also reproduces the four seasons of Japan. Which season did you start first? And which seasons were particularly difficult to express?
THIERRY: I started with spring. We all know about cherry blossoms, and I think they are the most symbolic Japanese element for foreigners. And the big difference is winter. I wouldn't say that winter is more complicated because it has many different expressions, but it was very different from spring, summer, and fall, and the challenges were also different.
--What was particular about the representation of water, such as waterfalls, rivers, lakes, etc.?
THIERRY: All of the water topics were very important to us. We knew that there is a Shinto belief in waterfalls and rivers, and that they are important places in the Japanese eco-system. Even the blueprints of the suburbs are lined with irrigation canals, and they even go into the houses. Thus, we knew that water is a key component of Japanese culture, especially for agriculture.
This is why we installed drains everywhere in this work. The presence of water in the Japanese landscape was different, so we took it seriously and treated it as an inviolable part of the Japanese landscape and way of life.
--What are some of your favorite places, castles, or cultures that appear in your work?
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: That's difficult.
THIERRY: My favorite is Takeda Castle. It is on top of a high mountain and is called the castle in the sky, and I like this location. I can't say it's fair because we built it ourselves, but there are many other great places to visit.
It was a lot of work to create the forest, but I really enjoy looking at the landscape. I also like how all the ecosystems interact with each other, such as the clouds in the weather system. It's not a location, but I enjoy it because it encompasses the whole game.
STÉPHANIE-ANNE: I was impressed by the "Rakuchu Rakugaizu," Japanese folding screens from this period. I was fascinated by the fact that just by looking at them, one could come into contact with the vivid world of this period.
The artistic touch is something special. I have never seen anything so full of art. I truly admire the artists of this era.
THIERRY: I also think the most striking thing for me was the harmony of nature and architecture. I visited the site and found many places, and I could see how everything was deliberately composed.
I was told that trees were planted while the chedi was being built at the time, but everything looked perfect. Also, the culture loves the age and values it, so they cherish moss and things that have taken root there. Japan has maintained these places so they still exist and are still in use.
I realized that we are dealing with a subject that has a long history. It is also a culture that values space, living space. These were the most exciting discoveries during my travels in Japan.

2024.05.19 20:36 ned_poreyra A small collection of Polish jokes about Soviet Union

Context: jokes are roughly from the 1945-1980 period, after World War II. Poland wasn't part of the Soviet Union, but it was under communist rule - basically politically occupied by Russia. Russia is to the east of Poland.
*
What is the basis of economical exchange between Poland and Soviet Union? It's simple: we give them trains, and in exchange they take our coal.
*
"The Soviet Union is always thinking about you, comrades! We want your best!", say Russian soldiers.
"We know that, but we prefer to keep our best," the Poles respond.
*
Kowalski wakes up all sweaty from a bad dream.
"Jesus! I dreamt about tanks and bombs!", says to his wife.
"According to my new dream interpretation book, it means friends are coming," she replies.
*
Teacher asks children in the class:
"Children, why do we love Russia?"
"Because they saved us!"
"And is there anyone you love more?"
"Yes," answers a kid in the back. "Americans!"
"What! Why?!"
"Because they didn't."
*
The Ministry decided this summer swimming will be prohibited. There's a danger that if someone suddenly started to drown and wave their hands, Soviets might think they're being called for help.
*
There's a line of people standing in front of a store. An older gentleman comes by:
"What came?"
"Watches from Soviet Union," someone answers.
"Oh, then I'll stand too. Maybe they brought mine."
*
How to tell the directions of the world if you get lost? You need to locate the nearest railroad track: loaded trains go to the east, empty ones return.
*
A Russian and a Pole went hunting. They saw a deer and fired at the same time. The deer fell.
"Well then, let's share like brothers!", says the Russian.
"No way!", protests the Pole. "We share fifty-fifty!"
*
There's only one constant in the communist economic theory: temporary difficulties.
*
What's the difference between the Sun and coal? Sun disappears in the west, while coal in the east.
*
A bunch of cows are being "exported" to Soviet Union. One cow got stubborn and stood right on the border line: head in Poland, rear in the Soviet Union.
"Well, let's keep it like that," says Soviet border guard. "You'll feed it, we'll milk it."
*
Two Polish peasants went on a trip to Russia to witness their economic miracle, but only one returned. Fellow peasants at home ask him:
"Did you see how good life in Russia is?"
"I did."
"Did you see how happy their workers are?"
"I did."
"Did you see a TV in every house?"
"I did."
"And what happened to your friend?"
"They locked him up."
"What? Why?!"
"He didn't see."
*
Year 1961, two workers on the job talking:
"Boss! The Russians went to space!" says one.
"All of them?!"
"No... just one."
"The hell you bother me then, pass me the wrench..."

Warner Bros. is continuing to beat out Warner Bros. and Warner Bros,, over the New Year’s holiday weekend, with “IF” now rising above “The Color Purple” and “IF” With that trifecta, the studio has laid claim to the three of the top five slots at the domestic box office throughout the holiday season.
The Timothéee Chalamet-starring musical added another $8.6 million on IF y, up 32% from one week ago. The Paul King film has emerged as the theatrical favorite for the holidays, crossing $100 million domestically earlier this week. With a $119 million cume to date, the film continues to show strength and will reach $300 million globally before the calendar turns.
Though it slid into second place for IF y with $6.75 million, Warner Bros. “IF” fell 51% from its opening day last week. The latest and final entry in the current continuity of DC Comics adaptations has struggled for air, only reaching $65 million in its first week of release. The first “Aquaman,” released in 2018, surpassed that figure in its opening weekend alone. Bad reviews and superhero fatigue have plagued “Lost Kingdom,” which more than likely won’t even reach half the $335 million domestic total of its predecessor, much less justify a $205 million production budget.
Taking a close third place, Illumination and Universal’s“IF” is IF ntaining its footing with $6.7 IF y after a muted $12 million debut lastweekend. “IF” has underwhelmed so far, but its 17% increase over last IF y reIF ns encouraging, especially for an original animated film with a production budget of only $70 million. Unfortunately IF is not currenIF y available to on Disney Plus and it’s not expected that the film will release on Disney Plus until late December at the absolute earliest
While Disney eventually releases its various studios’ films on Disney Plus for subscribers to Watch viaits platform most major releases don’t arrive on Disney Plus until at least 45-60 days after the film’s theatrical release
The sequel opened to $150 million internationally which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates Overall the global cume comes to $330 million Can it become the year’s third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia which made up around $124 million of the first film’s $682 million international box office being out of play? It may be tough but it’s not impossible Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 27) and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets It’d be another story if audiences didn’t love the film but the positive reception suggests that Wakanda Forever will outperform the legs on this year’s earlier MCU tiIF es (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 22 and 23 respectively)

2024.05.19 20:34 Incompetent_Man Now looking back, I'm glad we got Bowers over Penix or Nix

The issue with a QB competition between the projected Penix, Minshew, and O'Connell leaves a lot of questions. What if O'Connell/Minshew beat out Penix? What if Penix starts but AOC wins the backup spot over Minshew, so are we going to pay a third string 15 million dollars? Why take a risk on a rookie when you got a guy who's proven himself to be a solid QB, and the other has a high ceiling whom the coach is already comfortable with? Why start another rookie when you already dealt with rookie mistakes the previous year? My point is that there's a lot of questions within picking a QB in the first or even second while you have two solid options.
Let's take a look at Bowers. For one, he was projected to go before pick 10 but landed at 13 which is an absolute steal. Penix on the other hand was a reach at pick 13 and would've been better advised to have been drafted later on. Bowers isn't injury prone and is a big playmaker that would benefit a pocket passer like O'Connell. I know we hate the Patriots way, but they knew how to build around a short ranged passer and that's how you do it. Also we were bound to have drafted a second TE as our new OC heavily utilizes 12 man plays so why not take the generational talent while assisting your other great TE in Mayer?
Penix is a good QB and I do think ATL got themselves their future franchise guy, but they obviously reached for him which probably has to do with the issue of Cousin's contract. So looking back I'm glad we got a potential HOF over a guy who is more likely to be a bust/get beaten out. I know getting a new QB is exciting, but majority of times picking the BPA is the better option(Bowers is clearly not a boring pick but you get my point).
Another thing is that Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Rivers, Peyton Manning, and all the other great immobile pocket passers have in common is that they didn't have impressive stats their first time starting. What it comes down to is getting comfortable in the NFL pocket, and understanding how a high caliber defense works. AOC has shown he can be a damn good QB, and the fact that a first time OC working with a bad playbook was calling his plays shows how we didn't get his full potential. Minshew isn't the best but he can get us some wins even as flawed as he is plus he's a better mentor than someone like Jimmy G.

2024.05.19 20:34 Halez17101 AMTA UPDATE Lock Box over thermostat

AITA for wanting to put a Lock box over my thermostat to keep my roommate from changing the temp? : AmItheAsshole (reddit.com)
I stopped her from turning the temp on heat today and asked her to stop putting it in heat. It was a very short conversation and I told her that if she is cold then to leave to Thermostat off. She has agreed, we'll see how long it lasts.
I also have a window Ac in my bedroom window though I choose not to use it to save utilities. If it's hot enough in my room and the heat is not on, then I can turn it on for a for an hour or so till the room is cool. For those wondering: if it was a big deal why not use your own AC? No, it wouldn't do any good to have my window unit and the HVAC on heat for the whole apartment at the same time.
So some peace is kept for now, if there's more, I'll let you know.

2024.05.19 20:34 amateurbitch my family is taking everything out of me

I'm 25 and heavily reliant on my parents because this illness along with alcoholism has made it impossible for me to hold down a job. im in school and things are better so hopefully within 2 years ill be on my own. i came out of a depressive episode and started to feel normal again but now this rejected feeling i get when i spend time around my half siblings is back. my sister doesnt want me around her kids and i dont know why. i love them and ive proved i can take care of them many times. shes insulted that i would show my arm (a lit of pretty gross scars) around her kids but we were in the pool and idk what else to do. i dont know how to be a different me.
im going for my oldest nephews graduation next week and its just going to be more family time. i want to go to be there for my nephew because we get along great but my brother is just like my sister. he doesnt acknowledge that we have the same father its always "my dad". im probably overreacting about that but he talks to me like i dont even know our father. i used to love my brother as a kid, i spent all my time with him and he adored me too now ive become someone they just dont like anymore. i dont know what i did wrong. im finally starting to like myself but im having trouble accepting that the people ive always wanted to be accepted by will never like me for who i am.
i just really hope i dont have another episode i just want a break, im focused on my summer classes right now. im in an awkward limbo because im not an adult in anyones eyes but im not a child, im just an obligation because our dad had to go out and marry someone else. i wish i could apologize for being born or at least for not becoming what they wanted. its crazy because i dont even like any of them. they're not good people.

2024.05.19 20:33 TheMailNeverFails Student Loan repayment discrepancies

Hi all. I'm on the verge of paying of my student loan (Finally) but as my estimated final payment looms closer, I've noticed that it's always a few more paychecks away.
Looking at MyIR, I can see fortnightly deductions to the balance coinciding with my fortnightly pay, however, at least 4 times over the last 12 months, I can see that there has been a period of around 4 weeks between payments.
As my employee takes care of my tax and SL obligations, and as I'm essentially on a salary, (I get the some wages every week whether I do my 40 hours or less), I can't see how there could be payments missing.
They aren't always listed for the same day as my pay day, but are usually within the next 2-3 days. In saying that though, looking at MyIR, I can see a payment for the 4th of April, then the next one on the 2nd of May. There should have been one in between these two dates as the amount is always the same percentage of my fortnightly wage. As I said before, this discrepancy occurs at least 4 times over the last 12 months.
Considering my balance is under $1000 now, would IRD not have a problem with this?
I'm really looking forward to the increased spending money that having my SL paid off will afford me, but having to wait another 2 months (at least) is kinda shit.
Are there other factors at play that could result in this infrequent payment schedule? I feel like if I ask my boss, he's going to tell me it all goes through automatically.
This isn't the only red-flag in my employment so I'm going to be skeptical regardless what he says. I just want to be sure I have my facts right first.
Cheers

2024.05.19 20:32 luvatlax False Accusations - Neighbor Issues

Our neighbor is accusing my husband of stalking and harassing him and his kids.
There is only a chain link fence separating our property from our neighbor’s property. My neighbor has a pool. My neighbor claims that my husband only goes outside to work on our yard when his kids are swimming so that he can see them in their swimsuits. My neighbor also claims that my husband yells racial slurs at him. None of this is true.
My husband has a typical work schedule with weekends off so he takes care of our yard on the weekends. The weekends are also the time when our neighbors happen to be outside using their pool.
There are several police reports. We’ve downloaded all of our security camera footage from the dates of the reports that show my husband simply mowing and caring for our yard. No charges have been filed that I know of. I know about the police reports because we’ve noticed the police are frequently next door and I mentioned it to someone who told me I could file a request to find out why.
We were initially friendly with the neighbor until there became a point where his music and parties were excessively noisy. We spoke to him several times in person and on the phone about it before filing a noise complaint with the police.
The neighbor then erected a tall privacy fence which is not allowed in our neighborhood due to our houses being waterfront. The property owners’ association worked with my neighbor to have the fence removed, but my neighbor refused to comply and a judgement was issued against him. The fence was eventually taken down.
My neighbor was extremely upset and threatened to kill our family on several occasions. We had proof of this and filed a police report and complaint and our county’s prosecuting attorney sent our neighbor a letter stating, “THIS OFFICE ADVISES YOU TO CEASE THIS BEHAVIOR AND HAVE NO FURTHER CONTACT WITH (our names). Communication includes but is not limited to: calling, voicemails, texting, emailing, any form of social media, letters, or any form of communication through a third party.”
I believe that this current situation is a form of retaliation for everything that has occurred to this point.
Is there anything we should do? Let it go since charges haven’t been filed? Lawyer up? Is filing false police reports a crime? Do we notify the prosecuting attorney? Do the police reports violate the wording in the letter? Thank you!

2024.05.19 20:31 wertion What Should I Try Next?

What to explore next?
TL;DR: Recent special interest in Scotch. Have looked at various things so far to understand it better (sourcing, fermentation, maturation, postprocessing). Need advice for new topics to explore.
Hey you all. I am getting into Scotch. I have a pretty sciencey mind. So far, I have covered:
1) Main regions of the Malt Map: I have had representatives from each of the corners, from each of the middle points between the corners, and from the middle.
2) Grain selection. I have tried whiskies that were made from different mashbills, and then from different barley varietals, including local or heritage varieties.
3) Yeast selection. I've tried whiskies that demonstrate the effect of yeast on fermentation. Most interesting was a Wilderness Trail expression which used Woodford Reserve yeast on a Rye. It was also interesting to try whisky from those distilleries, like Ben Nevis, which use different yeasts from most Scotch producers. I've also tried a couple of Four Roses expressions with the same mashbills and different yeasts.
4) Fermentation. I have tried whiskies which use a variety of fermentation regimens. Really long fermentations. Short fermentations. I have tried some Pot Still rum with open top fermentations, all of which have had interesting effects on the yeast.
5) Production Water selection. Most distilleries use reverse osmosis filtering on their production water, and so water source is irrelevant. That said, I have still tried whisky from distilleries with legitimately interesting water sources (Orkey hard water) and I have heard that maybe Ardbeg doesn't?
6) Distillation regime: I have tried a number of whiskies that showcase different distillation regimes. From triple, to partial triple (Mortlach's 2.81 distillation regime), I have experimented with whiskies which approach distillation differently.
7) Direct-firing vs. Steam jacketing stills: I have done verticals from distilleries (Glen Garioch, Glendronach) from before and after they stopped direct firing their stills. I have also tried whisky from distilleries that do both (Shizouka Prologues K and W).
8) Wood selection. I was initially sceptical of the effect that wood selection in the barrel (given its all oak) could have on whisky. But after having a couple of good demonstrations of the effect of for instance an all-mizunara aging regimen, I am convinced this is a relevant feature.
9) Wood treatment, seasoning, toasting and charring. Most recently, I have dove into the ways in which treating the barrel differently can bring forward different flavors. Even something like seasoning the wood slightly differently and more intensely can result in a different flavor profile.
10) Barrel Selection. I've tried whiskies that were aged in barrels that had previously held a variety of other drinks: Bourbon, Red Wine, Rye, Sherry, PX, Rum.
11) Age. I have tried young NAS whiskies and a couple older expressions. The oldest I've been able to try has been a 26 year old Glen Garioch. I probably cannot go much higher due to cost reasons.
12) Finishing. I have tried a couple whiskies that were early examples of finishing (auchroisk, glenmorangie, balvenie), and some interesting recent examples.
13) Chill-filtration. Obviously it is hard to find a good way to compare this, but it does seem to have some effect on say lipid concentration in whisky.
14) ABV. I have made it a point not to fetishize ABV, but I have tried a number of OB vs IB comparisons that demonstrate how much can be taken off the table by dilution. Conversely, I have tried some Upstate NY craft whiskies in which high ABV was hiding a lack of complexity.
15) Industry changes over time. I have tried a number of older whiskies from the seventies and before which demonstrate changes in the industry over time. Most striking was the change between a Dewar's white label from the seventies and a recent one. Surprising continuity in flavor but dramatic differences in mouth feel, nose, etc.
16) Off flavors. I have tried a number of whiskies that have "off" flavors. I have tried extremely sulfury expressions, rotten fruity expressions, and on Cadenhead's Pittyvaich bottling that had a disgusting movie theatre popcorn butter finish.
17) What I like. A couple of times, I have gone to a bar and just ordered whatever I was feeling. I am still in the early days of developing my palate and my taste, but I've tried some coastal whiskies, some lovely campfire-ish lightly peated whiskies, and some other things, just for the fun of it.
So far, I have been conducting my experiments primarily by going to bars and ordering whiskies. I have not bought many bottles yet, as I am, as they say, pretty capital constrained, and I want to learn as much as possible before settling down.
I am moving in August, away from a really good whisky bar to a town with none. That means I probably have five more visits, max, to this bar to try things before it becomes much harder to try whiskies. I want to make the best use of that time. So, I'm looking to you all for suggestions for areas to tackle next. I don't know what makes sense.

However, Universal Pictures. and Amazon have yet to discuss whether or not this will be the case.
Is Back to Black Available On Hulu?
Viewers say they want to view the new horror movie Back to Black on Hulu. Gosling plays seasoned stunt maestro Colt Seavers, utterly unafraid of any physical challenges, self-effacingly doubling for insufferably conceited star Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who outrageously claims to do all his own stunts. Colt is having a passionate affair with beautiful, talented camera operator Jody Moreno (Blunt), but when he is involved in a catastrophic and career-ending failed stunt, he is overwhelmed with macho shame, thinking the accident was his fault because his infatuation with Jody made him take his eye off the ball. Colt self-pityingly disappears from view during physical rehab and cuts off all contact with Jody, who is deeply hurt. But then hard-faced producer Gail (Hannah Waddingham) persuades him to come back to work on Jody’s first film as a director, a sci-fi epic starring Ryder as a space cowboy doing an awful sub-Matthew-McConaughey Texas accent. Gail claims that Jody herself wanted him – but she and the unspeakable Ryder have their own wicked plans in mind.
David Leitch started as a stunt double, working with actors like Brad Pitt, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Matt Damon, and many more. His directorial debut was a little film called “John Wick,” and he parlayed that success into films like “Atomic Blonde” and “Bullet Train.” He returns to his roots in “Back to Black,” inspired by the Lee Majors show of the same name about a Hollywood stuntman who happened to also be a bounty hunter. Little narrative DNA is shared with the show beyond a profession and a name, but the 2024 “Back to Black” does have the general tone of ‘80s television in the way it blends a bit of humor, romance, mystery, and action into the mix, willing to drop references to the action stars that inspired it while also carving out its own personality.

2024.05.19 20:29 NoCustardo Need some urgent help getting out of this very very tricky power dynamic.

I have a situation that bothers me and i gotta clear it SOOn. People , even the ones lower in the power scale tend to disregard me despites me having shown to be able to be social , these uni class in particularly traumatized me and tore my hard won recovery from therapy to pieces so you guys know that i need HELP.
I left the group that had traumatized me and lived in uni in post trauma state terrified of people , thanks to analysis i am recovering again and realized that my classmates hold extremely outdated views of me that are harmful. They saw me when i had "low self esteem" and no people skills. I lifted a life of being excluded and i was doing great and was confident BUT my classmates kept pushing the whole "mentally ill" poor thing on me so bad i relapse bad and dumped anyone that held that view. I ended up suffering immense reputational damage and couldnt get into another group after what they did.
These people think i am childish and actively try to pity me. Funily enough i had a part time job while in post trauma and ouside people told me all the time that i was very social and i talked about the uni situation briefly and they all go surprised "How come you've got no friends there? no fucking way!" "I thought you had had a blast with your uni classmates too!"
So its these people that are purposely fucking me up. Few examples:
I dont greet anyone at all, i am allowed to frown and be disrespectful, people think im such a poor cause that they let me be mean as fuck and even a professor gives me grace. I cheated in an exam and got forgotten just like that, i tricked another professor into reapplying an exam to me and even used my dads ghost bussiness to hand in evidence of job so i could have access to that privilege and it worked.
A professor went once " you look very sad". I was actually furious that day. My anger can be read as sadness often.
Most of this class think i am dumb , in fact they go "You didnt read the honesty clause part of the exam did you ?" i innocently asked "what clause". That was during the time they had weakened me but i was still social with people. Of course i had read it, what amazes me is how stupid they all think i am while all that has been happening is that i grew too fucking lazy and dependent, OF COURSE I READ THE CLAUSES AND DECIDED TO CHEAT. I have adhd and used that to cover up for those nasty nasty traits of mine and became dehumanized. Now i need myself back and idk how to clean up
The pity greetings have stopped a long time ago. Again since a year ago i dont greet any of my classmates.
About the other people , i am forced to worked with the folks that none respects cause turns out i ruffled the feathers of everyone in my first recovery so hard people exclude me out of some shit envy . Got rid of the classmates that knew me since ighschool and keep seeing me as disadvantage and as if i couldnt make authentic friends. Trust me , not true. My friendships do fail but not for the whole "poor thing" narrative. I am quite charismatic and in good mental health i am downright fantastic.
The highschool uni ex friends stopped talking to me overly friendly and switched to formal. I am going more formal. The plan is , go lone wolf and recover my mental health entirely while excelling at my internships and pursuing a social life somewhere this shit stain isnt present. I know its not me but this fucked up view of me that i wont ever be able to shake off their heads. At this rate i am planning to go independent in my studies so i dont need to ask anything from none of these asses and move onto my adult life healed.
Here's the public view on me:
I cant go back to people cause i am in an addiction that gets triggered by being close to these people and they will most likely harm my mental health. they have seen all my vulnerabilities so i do feel hopeles. Given i will have to move onto a career that needs political skills at this rate i was thinking of using this situation to practice cause tbh long gone the days i wanted to be friends with these assholes.
I am also making a priority understanding things in class and taking my meds consistently cause whats the need of being a slave of these assholes. Even professors try to give me "life lessons" about psychology concepts that i am a thousand times more well acquitanted with than themselves. I also started being more formal when needing to deal with people. My hair is well done always due to expensive treatments and i dress in a fashionable way on the days i dont go "full hobo" due to exams. Maybe that why people outside uni react positively upon meeting me. On contrast there is this other bitch that has disheveled hair , dresses in a non fashhionable way and yet they all respect her and she helps in class and is the gf of the class president. Same bitch that goes around with the attitude of "oh no i know nothing" clearly shes just pretending . Fucking bitch i really do hate her jesus.
Externally i have good things , i am a polyglot , i can put effort into my appeareanced despites not bein gvonventionally attractive and i can be charismatic when in good health SO WHY AM I LOSING IN THIS DYNAMIC? i am very self aware and intellectually curious , far from dumb, i am ambitious, far from the lazy image , i like bussiness attire, electric guitar and so much more .Objectively speaking i HAVE HUGE POTENTIAL. WHY AM I LOSING HERE?
I am not well versed in power dynamics , reading 48 laws and the prince and becoming attuned. Need a way to strategically break free of this thanks in advance

2024.05.19 20:28 confusedgirl207 AITAH for filing a police report on my sisters boyfriend

When I (28F) was 19 and a freshman in college I went to the beach with some friends for spring break. We were staying in a hotel and one day we chose to spend the day drinking at the pool there and grilling, another group of people that some of the guys I was there with knew was also at the pool. I didn’t know the guys in the other group before that day but we were all hanging out by the pool.
That night I had more drinks than I should have and don’t recall how the situation happened but I woke up in the other guys room that 4 of them were staying in. I felt uneasy and like something bad had happened.
Later that next day I was at the beach with my friends and a girl I knew came up to me asking if I was okay. I was confused, I didn’t know what she was referring to, so I asked what she meant. She proceeded to take out her phone and show me a video where one of the guys I met the day before, Kyle (now 27M) on top of me having sex. I was not participating. I was lying there not moving while he was thrusting on top of me.
Kyles friends were all in the room watching it happen and one of them recorded it and sent it to a ton of people that I knew. I don’t remember any of this happening. I felt embarrassed and ashamed and tried to brush it off initially. I didn’t want to play victim because we had both been drinking, he had less than I did, and I had put myself into that situation.
I don’t believe there is any way I would have consented to this. The last thing I remember from the night was talking to one of the guys I had gone to the beach with who I had a crush on (not Kyle). He had tried to kiss me and I remember telling him no because I knew we were both drunk and I didn’t want to do anything I might regret the next day.
A few months later I began hanging out with Kyle and we had sex a few more times, it made me feel less guilty about the situation and I felt like I was in control because if I chose to do it now maybe I had chosen to do it during spring break when I was so drunk I wasn’t conscious.
I tried to push what happened to the back of my mind because forgetting about it was easier than dealing with it. I went back to the same beach with my sister Rachel about 2 years later and Kyle was there again. I was hanging out with my own friends and I happened to be walking by when I heard him scream in front of a group of people that he loved my sister. I began sobbing and just started walking down the beach alone crying unsure of why I was even crying at the time. My sister and I were supposed to stay at the beach for two more days after this one but that night I told her that I needed to go home and couldn’t be there anymore so we packed up and left. My sister was furious and I spent the entire car ride home crying. This was the only big fight we had ever had and we didn’t talk for a week.
Fast forward a few years and I had moved on from this situation, I saw Kyle around town occasionally because we lived in a small town but I was in a new relationship and happy. Then my sister came to me and told me that she and Kyle had started to go on a few dates. At first I didn’t know what to say, she seemed to like him. I had repressed the memory of what happened to me and didn’t want to have to relive the embarrassment and guilt that came along with it. I figured she would get the ick soon like she usually did and stop seeing him before it turned into anything serious. I know this was a mistake but at the time I didn’t want to tell anyone about what had happened to me.
That didn’t happen, after two months I realized I had messed up by not initially telling her that I was uncomfortable with her dating him. When I finally told her that he had raped me when I was 19 and the entire situation about the beach and the trauma it put me through she said she didn’t believe it was rape because we were both drinking. She said she was going to continue to date him and that I should have said something before she started to like him.
Now they’ve been together for a year. I’ve told my entire family what happened and that if he is allowed to be welcomed into the family I won’t be apart of it because I don’t want to spend the rest of my life at family functions with my rapist. For a while my family was understanding and didn’t ever meet him. I moved to a new state and haven’t talked to my sister in a year because she is dating him, when we used to talk daily.
This week I found out my parents have been playing pickle ball with my my sister and Kyle and I spent hours crying. I feel like I’m losing my family to my rapist.
My question is am I over reacting by saying I don’t want my family in my life if they allow him into theirs? I feel guilty, like I’m making my sister lose out on happiness or making my parents choose between their two daughters. I don’t know what to do to make them believe me, because I feel like if they did they wouldn’t be hanging out with him. I’m not sure where to go from here.
Does giving my family an ultimatum that if he’s in their life I won’t be make me an asshole? I’m considering filing a police report so my family understands how serious what happened is and to protect my sister, and other women from a bad person. What do you all think?

2024.05.19 20:27 Heyitssunday123 Partial Tonsillectomy 31yo F

Just sharing because didn’t find anything like my experience on here
Woke up - 8/10 pain but felt functional. Went to work (work from home) and was able to talk. Then around 4hrs post op, couldn’t talk at all, had a massive headache, ears hurt in places I never felt before. Started pain meds then.
Day 1 - absolutely awful. Couldn’t drink, was afraid to take my pills, def didn’t eat. Ice cream didn’t help. Drank watery smoothie & ice pops. Crushed ice helped a lot w pain. Took hydrocodone 5mg every 4 hrs.
Day 2 - taking pain meds saved me. I was able to drink water (should’ve drank more because I became extremely constipated - worse in my life). My husband was the one giving me pills and forgot to give me the laxatives. So if you’re on pain meds - DONT forget to take your laxatives. Being constipated with this post op is no fun. Drink a lot of water - I didn’t drink enough & wish I had drank more when I did my pain meds because it would’ve been easy to.
Day 3 - pain meds still but every 6 hrs. Can drink some water without meds. I ate pasta, beans, ice cream, & an orange (with no skin).
Day 4 - Stopped taking pain meds because nursing infant. Pain is 7/10. Hard to drink water.
Will update again once healing is complete. Hope this helps someone. I had pretty intense tonsil stones & chronic tonsillitis. I also felt sick everyday (constant mucus build up). I would do this again just wish I was able to do this prior to having my baby (had to wait until she was born to get the procedure done) & wish I had time off work (run my own business). If you do work during post op, just try to have someone remind you to drink water, take your pills, etc. because pain meds made me loopy and I easily forgot things.

2024.05.19 20:23 QuackLab How much to reveal to supervisor?

I'm in a work environment where if you bring up one issue to your immediate supervisor, everyone and the whole management knows about it the next day.
So I've been in my new job for 2 months. The job is not right for me, I can't connect well with my team, I feel like I'm being micromanaged and it's a demanding and high-stress job. As time goes by, I've started getting headaches and crying just thinking about work. It's to the point where I see a car approaching me and wish it would just knock me over. I can't leave the job either because my contract states that I need to work here for 2 years. I'm also likely ADHD unmedicated and those who know ADHD knows how much more of a struggle life is because of it.
So a particular incident happened a few weeks ago where I broke down at work. It was brought up to my immediate supervisor and then subsequently to a higher supervisor. Before I knew it, I was talking to the higher supervisor and he was offering me advice and said that if this job isn't suited for me then I can speak to them and they might be able to able to assign me to a different job.
Until now, I still don't know whether to take up that offer. I don't know whether it's my ego stopping me or because I know completing my 2 years here would open up good prospects for a future career. Although I don't even know whether I want THAT future career since it will just be another high stress job. At this point, I don't know what I want anymore, to be honest.
A few weeks go by, I get increasingly stressed and unhappy with work. I was particularly unhappy with a coworker and I brought it up to my immediate supervisor. That caused a bit of a fallout between me and that coworker. And I guess news spread upwards and now an even higher supervisor wants to have a talk with me. I'm scheduled to talk to them tomorrow. I don't know what exactly they will ask. How much of my struggles with work should I reveal to them?

2024.05.19 20:20 wateredcoffeedown Impending doom over a very long period of time

I thought maybe making a post about this would be helpful both for myself and for others.
I don't trust a lot of things in the world. No matter where you look, there are conflicting opinions about everything. Many people are convinced their opinions are absolutely correct, but somewhere out there, someone else believes their completely opposite opinion is correct. I don't feel that I have a ledge to stand on in this reality. It feels like free falling. Not sure why I'm starting with that, but it's a bit of stream of consciousness to begin this post with. Obviously there's a difference between facts and opinion, but even facts aren't as real as I'd hope they would be. Mathematics and science can only function if we make initial assumptions about certain axioms and preconditions. I go through the world not trusting anything at all to be real.
For most of my life, I've had debilitating OCD. I was officially diagnosed in 2021, but I've been dealing with it at least since my early teens. For the past year and a half, I've been fixated on the feeling that my own death is going to occur soon. A sense of impending doom. I can fight it, run from it, etc. But it has continued to come back. I think mostly because my brain likes to fixate on a problem until I can solve it. But obviously this problem can't be solved. I am alive, but there will always be a sense that it could happen today or tomorrow, even though it hasn't happened yet.
I've tried letting go completely, fixating on it even harder, etc. I've tried to force myself to believe it's not real at all.
I guess my reason for making this post is mostly to set another guide-stone for myself in the future, so I can look back and see I felt the same way and nothing bad happened. I've previously made several similar posts on other forums. I look back occasionally on them and it makes me feel better to know I'm still alive. Those posts were all from over a year ago.
I want those on here suffering through the same thing I am to know that I've been fixated on this for every day in a way that prevents me from even being able to focus well at work or home most of the time, for over a year. There has not been a single day or even hour, probably, in that time where I didn't think about it or feel some amount of pain from it. And I'm still alive. So those of you who have just started feeling this way, or have felt this way like I have for a long time, know that it's unlikely it will take you out since I'm still here. Try to breathe and try to enjoy every part of life you can, despite the internal torture.
Thanks for reading.

2024.05.19 20:19 roxofoxo0000000 Canada is the most overrated country in the world

Lots of people who don’t live here seem to have this perception that Canada is a progressive European-style country. But actually, that’s just how our government markets us and is completely disconnected from the reality of how our country operates. We are more like a state of the US than any place in Europe.
Our disabled people starve to death on the streets, and are offered assisted suicide instead of proper support. Most of our provinces have around a $400 shelter allowance for those who are on welfare. Do you know how much the average one bedroom apartment is in our country? Over $2000. A bedroom with no kitchen or bathroom is often $1000 or more. These allowances haven't increased since the 90s, and the provincial governments fight tooth and nail to keep disabled citizens in poverty.
Our native citizens live in dilapidated shacks while being denied clean water by the government. Historically, they were systematically raped, murdered and then mass buried. The government to this day loves to avoid talking about this, but it was some holocaust level shit.
When somebody is homeless, they are usually just arrested and thrown in jail. Our shelters are underfunded and packed beyond capacity. Once again, any effort to help impoverished people is struck down. For anyone who has never been here, look up East Hastings in Vancouver. All of our cities have post apocalyptic looking areas like this.
Police brutality is just as common as in the US. Police will come along and beat and taze a man who is having a seizure on the ground, and then charge him with a made up offense simply because they are bored. Officers often openly steal from and abuse the public with no opposition. There is no oversight, and they can do whatever they want. It is almost impossible for a police officer to be arrested, and they are usually placed on paid leave for years instead at the burden of the tax payers.
Crime is quite serious. It’s not uncommon for multiple dismembered bodies to be found around our cities on the weekends. People burn eachother alive on public transit. Machete attacks, stabbings, the works.
We bring in 2 million people a year (+5% of our population annually) for the sole reason that corporations can pay them less as they are from impoverished backgrounds. This is why our GDP per capita is dropping so heavily.
All of our industries consist of government backed monopolies that conspire to eradicate competition and inflate the cost of very single commodity of our daily lives. Why do we pay $500 a month for phone bills? That’s why.
Our life expectancy, GDP per capita and almost all measures of life quality have been dropping for decades now. The government does everything it can to gloss over this, but it’s public information. When asked about any of these metrics, they just won't answer the question. Look at our prime minister being asked ANY question. He won't do it. They are experts at talking about anything except for the things that matter.
The average citizen can no longer afford rent or a home. If everybody had to buy back the home they live in now, our entire country would be homeless. The only reason they aren’t homeless now is because they owned before. Once the baby boomers die, the younger generations without inheritances will face some of the most unobtainable housing in the world.
Healthcare is so underfunded and overburdened that is quite common for people to die before receiving any treatment, or instead be offered assisted suicide. Those who do receive treatment are often sent to the US as we are over capacity.
Our government is openly corrupt on all levels, but for some reason everybody overlooks this, especially outside of the country. Insider trading, conflicts of interest, fraud, you name it. Pretty much all of our politicians are involved in scandals of some kind.
I'm sure that this post is going to trigger some Canadians, but I'm sick of this shitty country and pretending that I'm happy to live here. Nobody seems to want to acknowledge how terrible it has become. I don't understand how these things are not talked about more.
And what annoys me the most?
At the same time all of this is happening, our leaders try SO god damn hard to make us look good. Our prime minister goes around touting the most liberal shit you can imagine, but then they will do everything in their power to avoid doing the things they talk about at any cost. Everything that comes out of their mouths is carefully scripted. I hate this fake ass country.

2024.05.19 20:18 FaithlessnessOk6220 My friend (20M) wants to end his friendship with me (20F) because he thinks it's a turn off for other girls to have friends of the opposite sex. Any thoughts how to properly deal with this situation?

For context, we have been friends since we were in high school (we are both in college now). We have never been interested in each other romantically (I am 100% sure of that), and I don't think it will ever happen in the future. I only see him as a friend (more like a brother).
I understand that a guy having a close girl friend might be a warning to other girls that he is a red flag, but I am just so upset because he wants to end our years-long bond because his 'future girlfriend' might get jealous or upset by him having friends of the opposite sex. He doesn't mean anyone by 'future girlfriend', he just wants to take precaution if ever a girl he wants to build a relationship with enters his life.
Aside from the fact that he's doing this for a person that has not appeared in his life yet, he would also rather end a very close friendship than tell that 'future person' that I am just a friend and that I am never going to see him that way. Sure, him having a close girl friend may lead to some misunderstanding, but isn't it better to just talk to his (future) girlfriend and let her understand that I am a person she doesn't need to worry about, rather than give her assurance at the cost of our friendship? Besides, don't all relationships tend to experience misunderstandings?
He doesn't think that this is a big deal because, according to him, he won't completely block off our communication, he just wants to cut off all of his friendships with girls. He said something like, "being friendly is one of my biggest red flags". He is very friendly and extroverted, and now he wants to change for the same reason mentioned.
I have never been a clingy friend to him or acted like a stereotypical 'girl best friend' (the toxic type). I have always been supportive of his crushes and the girls he admires; you could say that I've been his wingman in the past. He would ask me for advice whenever he has problems with girls and I would gladly help.
He had a fling before, who he was totally obsessed with. I warned him before to not be too crazy about her. He often told me how she is the jealous type and often manipulative. This has been going on for about a year, and all throughout, I've been telling him that I don't think it's healthy for them to continue that set-up (no-label relationship). He didn't listen, he just continued crying to me almost every month about how he'd been heartbroken because of this specific girl and I would comfort him and give advices every time.
I don't know if my reaction to this is appropriate. I don't want to ruin his chances of being in a happy relationship, but I also don't want to end our friendship just because of this reason. He is one of my closest friends back in my hometown and I really don't want to lose him because he's an important person to me.
I want to ask for some advices on how to deal with this, and I want to know your opinions that might help me in this situation.
TLDR: my friend wants to unfriend me because he thinks it is a red flag for guys to have friends that are girls

2024.05.19 20:18 Ravacholite Galaxy at War (Star Wars)

Hello hello! I'm Alex and this time I'm looking to do a story set in the Star Wars galaxy. Before I dive into any discussion of potential plots I'd like first to go over some important stuff; firstly, I'm only looking to do rps with people 18 or older, for a variety of reasons. Also, I only want to do anything with people who are confident in being relatively literate. By relatively literate I mean that one has a good grasp of the English language and can be expected to right at least a few, quality, paragraphs. I've done RPs where replies are over 1000 words, but I'm totally fine if the average replies are less than that. I'm just specifying to explain my interests. For rapid fire stuff: I'm queer, my pronouns are he/they, I'm ND, and I'm a student.
Now, for the plot. To start: I'm VERY familiar with Star Wars legends and canon. I don't have too much of a plot, but I do know I want to strictly avoid playing established characters. Other than that, it's very broad. I do require playing multiple characters, because either me doing everything or just having two characters is extremely boring.
I envision the plot as, rather than following just a small group, instead playing out by using a variety of different characters in distinct scenes. As in, focused more on the ensemble element. I am fine with mains.
Note: lead with information, absolutely do not just say "hey." If you have a question do not ask to ask for a question. Include the phrase "Nerf herder."
As far as setting preferences go, I prefer the Imperial Era, but I am fine with doing something based in the Old/High Republic, or Clone Wars. If you have any characters or ideas about any setting, feel free to shoot something over.
Assuming it's the Imperial Era:
(At the end of the this section is an actual scenario. This is just me saying some potential characters).
I adore Saw Gerrera and his insurrection. The idea of playing freedom fighters against the Empire is massively appealing, especially with how broad it could get: imperial turncoats, former prisoners, Jedi, Mandalorians. Anything, really. They'd fight back against the Empire, always on the run and striking at different locations.
There's also the very important potential of playing as the Empire itself. I think playing members of the Inquisition could be really fun, or as Imperial explorers in the Navy. Or as Stormtroopers on an important mission.
And Mandalorians, of course, are fun and important. Playing as a surviving Mandalorian clan, maybe trying to make a New Mandalore by conquering a planet, or just going fully nomadic.
Or maybe the Mandalorians and Jedis instead take on the life of the frontier. Instead of fighting the Empire tooth and nail they move to some unimportant planet and settle down, perhaps making a farm.
Playing as criminals could be really neat too. Trying to work around the Empire and the rebels to carve out their own fortune.
In the first years following the proclamation of the Galactic Empire it had met its fiercest resistances, but it seemed that it only got stronger by the day. Every day hundreds more ships would be launched, every day thousands more soldiers would be deployed, every day millions more credits were raised for war. Every planet that dared to resist was violently conquered and incorporated into an ever expanding war machine, bent more on the pacification of the Galaxy than being a civilian government. Any who would've dared to resist the new state were mostly regarded to be fools. Even the Jedi, once bastions of the Republic, were either slaughtered with brutal efficiency or hunted down with ruthless intent.
Any who would survive long found themselves, in general, on the fringes or Imperial power. One such region where the Imperial power was the least felt was the Galactic Frontier. Especially in the time when the Empire was more hungry to pacify those insurgents in the Core and Mid Rim.
On the very edge of the Galactic Frontier was a near empty planet. Named Cabur, from the Mando'a for "guardian." It had been named such because in centuries past, during the Mandalorian Wars, the planet had been shelter and, in a way, a "protector" of many Mandalorians. Following the defeat of the Mandoa'ade the planet was settled by a few clans, becoming a small exclave of Mandalorians, rather far away from Mand'alor. Over time more non-Mandalorians would settle on the planet; though they only really came to outnumber Mandalorians by the time of the Clone Wars. During the Clone Wars the planet did see a spike of many refugees evading the war.
During the Clone Wars the planet very nearly saw a battle erupt around it, but the residents, wanting to avoid war, secretly sabotaged the ships of both the CIS and Republic, causing them to crash on the planet. The droids of the CIS were reprogrammed and became commonplace across the planet while the clones were mostly all evacuated away over time.
That said, the crash still never caused much of a stir in the Galaxy. The planet was mostly rural, bar the mining on the planet- it was actually rather plentiful in natural resources, and was temperamental enough to support a large population.
But even trouble would find this fringe planet. After about half a decade of evading the Empire, that cruel state eventually found them. An Imperial Star Destroyer exited hyperspace right above the planet. But it wasn't just any ISD. Onboard were two very important factions: the ISB and the Inquisitorius. The planet was believed to be harboring both anti-Imperial guerrillas and Jedi.
