2024.05.20 00:28 h0r53_5t4R Need help with Music Producer / Gaming laptop choice

Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy / configure a new laptop that I can use for both gaming and music production. I've narrowed down my options to ASUS, Dell & Alienware, Lenovo, HP, and XMG. Here's what I'm looking for in terms of specs:
Given these requirements, could you recommend specific models from these brands? Also, any advice on ensuring good thermals would be greatly appreciated. Are there any models I should avoid due to poor cooling?
Thanks in advance for your help!

2024.05.20 00:18 _Karsteski_ I'm having serious issues with my newly build PC. Would very much appreciate some advice on this situation

Hi folks, I rebuilt my gaming PC a few weeks ago, and ever since then it has had some very strange problems that I can't explain with my limited knowledge. The worst of which is that it is randomly cutting off, specifically when playing performance intensive games.
The initial issue was that it would never boot on first try, it would first have an error (which I no longer remember) then it'd boot up into some sort of BIOS safe mode. This was when I was using an ASUS TUF B650-PLUS Wi-Fi board, which I returned. Now, I still have an issue where my PC takes FOREVER to boot, say around 1-2 minutes but it does boot. During this time my motherboard usually sits with its red + yellow error lights on, referring to the CPU and DRAM respectively.
Finally, I'm having random troubles with videos severely stuttering on my second monitor, regardless of whether this monitor is plugged into my iGPU or dGPU. I've not determined why this is the case or narrowed down the cause.
Specs for context:
Possible Relevant Peripherals: - Main Monitor: Alienware AW3423DWF 1440p165Hz HDR ultrawide monitor - Secondary Monitor: Dell S2417DG 1440p 165Hz monitor
I've tried logging some metrics for when the PC cuts off but since AMD Adrenalin Software only writes to memory when the logging is complete, it's been worthless. However, I did video record the logs at the moment the recording cut off. Here's the last moment before the power loss.
Anyways, if anyone has any ideas of what next to troubleshoot, that'd be great. I guess I have to try swapping out all my parts to narrow down this issue..? What a damn pain.

2024.05.19 23:33 help_with_stuff canada, looking for a laptop for emulation

Hi all. I am looking for a laptop that is capable of running emulators like pcxs2, project 64, and Citra without turning into an oven. My budget is $1200 CAD MAX including taxes.
refurb is fine as long as it does what i want. don't care too much about screen size or if it's thin
Also, a massive boon would be a touchscreen. i really like a touchscreen but the device itself does not need to be foldable.
other than the aforementioned uses, i will not be using it for advanced gaming. just old school retro emulators and such
I have tried researching but there's an absolute mind-boggling amount of graphics cards, spec sheets, etc. and every time i find something and delve into a rabbit hole, i end up even more confused so i would LOVE for somebody more intelligent than me to lend me a hand
thanks for suggestions

2024.05.19 22:53 Far_Marsupial6303 More info about the height of the new 6TB 2.5" WD drive

Posting for visibility as an addendum to this thread. https://www.reddit.com/DataHoardecomments/1cu2301/finally_after_seven_years_a_6tb_25inch_external/
I was looking at the WD site and noticed they have other models beyond the WD Black external and there are spec sheets for them. They are not listed
To those who wonder why the height is important, max 15mm height for 2.5" drives has been the standard for may years and is the largest height allowed in 2.5" enclosures.
The 5TB MyPassport case is 19.2mm and the drive is 15mm. The 6TB is 20.6mm so the drive is probably 16 or 16.5mm to accommodate the additional platter. I suspect this may allow them to fit snuggly in some 15mm cases. For reference, the lowest height 3.5" drive is 19.5mm.

Pricewise, the "bargain" ;-p, is the Elements SE at 169.99MSRP, vs $129.99 for the 5TB.

PC shut down and won’t boot back up again - CPU and DRAM lights on
I was just using my pc when all of the sudden, it shut down. So I tried booting it back up again, but it wouldn’t even show a display. The CPU and DRAM lights are on, and I’ve already swapped CMOS batteries, checked the power supply at the store, and changed RAM. I’m hoping it’s the motherboard at this point, but I’ve got no Idea at this point, so I came here.
Specs are: RAM: 32gb T-Force ddr4 delta rgb (swapped for 16gb Kingston fury) CPU: Intel i7 11700F Motherboard: Asrock z590 steel legend PSU: Thermaltake Smart 600W 80+ GPU: Dell RTX 3070

2024.05.19 22:09 Lonely-Drawer2344 First Desktop Build - PCIe Clarification

If using an AMD 78003XD CPU that has 24 usable PCIe lanes and a RTX 4090 GPU that needs 16 lanes for peak performance, is the Asus ROG STRIX X670E-E a suitable motherboard if I want to use The Nvidia Founders Edition RTX 4090 and two Samsung 990 Pro 4 TB PCIe 4.0 X4 SSDs while ensuring the GPU won't be switched to 8 lanes? The key focus for my build is peak performance and eliminating anything that will cost performance drop. So if a second SSD will drop performance, then I will drop it. Unfortunately spec sheets or a schematic of the motherboard don't explain to a novice how the motherboard is designed to operate and I read someone say the E-E design is worse than the E-F. Cost is not an issue so please no price shaming and it definitely doesn't need to be an X670E chipset or the RTX 4090 FE. B650 and another RTX 4090 GPU would be great if it can achieve what I want at a lower cost.
My build thus far:

Mix and matching speakers?
Hi, I have one Yamaha ns-iw760 (130w max/ 40w cont at 6 ohms), and one bose 251 ( 200w max/ 100w conts at 6 ohms). Could I use them one for rigth speaker, one for the left speaker for one channel in my Nuvo Grand Concerto (2 x 40watt cont at 6 ohm)? I am not sure if this would damage any of the speakers or the amp. I am attaching the specs sheets for reference. I would greatly appreciate some help here.

2024.05.19 19:44 plzhelpmebuildpc $12k build

Hi guys.
I am going to need quick help on deciding on the parts for a $12k build that I need to finalize parts for by the end of the week for work. I'm in Boston, I can't find anyone to help except Microcenter for this hardline cooled PC so hoping that folks here can be more helpful. The spec sheet I got after talking with the staff for about an hour is below:
Current total cost: $10,279.20 (incl. $800 build fee, $829 warranty)
Hardware
Intel Core i9 14900kS Raptor Lake 3.2GHz (link)
ASUS Z790 ROG Maximus Formula Intel LGA 1700 ATX Motherboard (link)

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 ROG Strix White Overclocked Triple Fan 24GB GDDR6X PCIe 4.0 Graphics card (link)
Seasonic Prime TX-1600 1600 Watt 80 Plus Titanium ATX Fully Modular Power Supply (link)
Case
Lian Li V3000 Plus Tempered Glass eATX Full Tower Computer Case - White (link)
Watercooling
14 x Bitspower G 1/4" Enhanced Straight Compression Fitting - Deluxe White (link)
4 X Bitspower G 1/4" 90 degree Rotary Adapter - Deluxe White (link)
2 X Bitspower G 1/4" Thread 45 degree Rotary Adapter - White (link)
6 X Bitspower G 1/4" Male to Female Straight Extender - Deluxe White (link)
1 X Corsair iCUE XC7 RGB ELITE LCD CPU Water Block - White (link)
2 X EK Quantum Surface P480M 480mm Radiator - White (link)
4 X Corsair iCUE Link QX120 RGB Magnetic Dome Bearing - 120mm PWM Fans Starter Kit - White - 3 pack (link)
1 X Corsair iCUE Link XD5 RGB Elite White Pump/Reservoir Combo - White (link)
6 X Bitspower 1/2" (13mm) x 5/8" (16mm) PETG Link Rigid Tubing 1m - Clear (link-x-5-8-(16-mm)-petg-link-rigid-tubing-1-m-clear))
1 X Corsair iCUE Link Qx120 RGB Magnetic Dome Bearing 120mm PWM Fan - White (link)
1 X EKWB CryoFuel Dye Pack (link)
The water cooling from Corsair doesn't look the best in my opinion. But the staff were going off of what's in stock. There is also no GPU block specified here, as we had agreed I would provide an EKWB, however there seems to be some recent drama around EKWB and I don't wanna give them our hard earned bucks.
I need to ask you all for help around the water cooling aspect of this build. I love custom PCs although I've never build one, and I am looking for advice on how to better do it. My understanding is that the V3000 is supposed to be massive, and we could put in two reservoirs, and it may be beneficial to have multiple pumps as well to help the flow around the system.
I'm happy with the fittings from Bitspower but open to other ideas.
I wish I could get nice custom cables to match the aesthetic of this build but I do not have time to wait the 3 weeks they apparently take to ship. Nonetheless I am thinking of upgrading it down the road, so also open to ideas there.
Happy to answer more questions. Any help you can provide would be wonderful.

2024.05.19 19:30 Hasz Adding external rigid Foam insulation in front or behind WRB

Hi All,
I am considering adding exterior insulation to an detached workshop I'm building, in climate zone 5b. I am building with 2x4 exterior walls with r-13 fiberglass batts. My roof will be vented. Workshop is about 300 sqft. The room will be conditioned by a minisplit only.
I am considering two main options for sheathing and wall assembly. Both stackups start from studs:
  1. 7/16" OSB/ply + WRB + 2" rigid foam + furring strips + siding
  2. 2" rigid foam, + 7/16 ZIP + siding
The 2" rigid foam spec comes from this ICC table
For option 2, I can't easily source ZIPR, so I would consider buying regular ZIP sheathing and just adding the rigid foam directly behind it.
A few questions:
  1. If you look at this stackup, figure 2-12S they've placed the rigid insulation on the outside of the weather resistant barrier, where as something like a ZIP R assembly places it behind the WRB. Should the exterior insulation go in front of or behind the WRB? I suppose the main concern would be trapping water between two impermeable surfaces, but I find conflicting opinions about this.
  2. Is ZIP (-R) worth the additional price? Right now, OSB is $20/sheet, Ply is 25/sheet, and ZIP is 32/sheet. I haven't installed it before, so not sure if there are sufficient laboair tightness savings to justify the 50+% cost increase.
  3. For the rigid exterior insulation, I am looking at EPS, XPS and Polyiso. polyiso looks like the best cost/performance option to me, but would appreciate some advice. Thanks!

2024.05.19 16:46 The-Sicilian96 Can an RTX A4000 be installed in a Precision 3460?

I’m looking to install a graphics card in my Dell Precision 3460 SFF with the 12th gen I9, and I was wondering if the RTX A4000 would work in it? It has a power requirement of 140W, and the most powerful graphics card that was originally optioned with the tower was the RTX 4000 ADA at 130W. I’m not seeing in the technical specs a maximum power output, and when I called Dell tech support, they didn’t know either.

2024.05.19 15:53 EliteCakeMan Just ordered the 1 V over the 1 VI. The screen is needed!

Sorry Sony guys I know most of you don't care. I just wanted to put my opinion somewhere in a hope that Sony or some one who does care may see it.
I've been waiting for months for the brand new release of the Sony Xperia 1 VI, super excited about it for a very long time and I only missed out on buying the 1 V at launch because id recently bought a Samsung Flip 4.
After watching many videos, comparisons and spec sheets. I just can't justify £1300 on a HD screen phone, QHD or QHD+ would have been okay. But it's literally half the resolution as the 1 V and you get nothing from losing the 21:9 screen. I got the 1 V for £800 Brand new sealed, so nearly half the price of the 1 VI.
But I can't complain I'm very happy with my new Sony 1 V purchase!
EDIT: I understand the screen isn't always 4K but id rather have it for when I can watch my BluRays in full 4K with no black bars with 21:9 rather be stuck at 1080 all the time.

2024.05.19 15:43 codypendant How should I configure SSD/nvme

Just acquired a Dell R740xd LFF for my new box and I am trying to decide how to setup my pools/vdevs. Here are my system specs: 2x Xeon platinum 8272CL 768gb ddr4 ecc ram 2x 480gb M.2 SATA (on Dell BOSS card for boot) 4x 3.84tb Samsung SAS3 SSD 2x 4tb Kioxa NVME SSD 4x 16tb WD ultra star HDD (this will be a Z1; will add another 4x Z1 as needed)
I do use virtualization for several virtual machines as well. I also use a couple chart apps. Should I create only one pool with separate HDD and SSD vdevs? Or create a separate pool for each?

2024.05.19 14:47 WorldLove_Gaming So... Where can Nintendo go after Switch 2?

I know the Switch 2 is still not released but we're basically at the point where reliable sources have reported on 90% of the spec sheet and physical aspects (including dimensions even) and it got me thinking: what else is there that Nintendo could do for their next-next-gen console? A foldable screen? Wireless streaming to a dock? Pocketability? Slimness? Lower price? On-screen controls (I hope not lol)?
I want to know your thoughts. Because in my opinion a possible Switch 2 Pro could already get PS5-levels of performance with a dockable portable device for a reasonable price if Nintendo wanted to. What else could Nintendo do to change the console game?

2024.05.19 14:35 Kunal_Sen How to Buy Your First Car (according to MotorInc)

MotorInc is an automotive YouTube channel featuring the enthusiasts Karthikeya and Shumi that has grown on me slowly. I particularly like their talkathons. Of which, on the latest one today, they discussed a topic that I thought might be relevant to many forum members here. It's titled:
How to Buy Your First Ever Car
The video entails the following main facets:
  1. Knowing Your Budget (and the benefits of stretching a bit in order to leave "headroom" to grow with the car)
  2. The Case for Petrol as Default for Most Use Cases
  3. Not being blinded by spec sheets, using vlogs only to narrow choices and test-driving before final selection
  4. Three Good Car Essentials or Hygiene Factors (Responsive Engine, Balanced Suspension with Control first priority and Comfort Second, and Well-Engineered Nature)
  5. The Features Question and the VFMness of the Mid-Variant (incl. debate on the usefulness of ADAS) and the need to have optional-feature variants and exploring the possibilty of fitting a car with after-market accessories.
  6. The Safety Conversation (difference between active and passive safety and need to stop putting all the onus on rating agencies, valuing features like rear washer and ESP over toted features like a high number of airbags)
  7. Personal Experiences
I don't agree with their after-market installations advise, but other than that, the video made a lot of sense. What do the others think?
