I’m generally an extremely progressive person. For the last decade, I’ve spent tons of time thinking about solutions to the worlds problems, discussing them with other people, arguing, etc.
Climate change, systemic racism, patriarchy, homophobia, imperialism, capitalism, the list of massive worldwide problems is virtually endless. I’m going to focus on climate change to illustrate my point but it applies basically the same to any widespread societal issue.
There is no fixing the climate. We’ve been saying for 10, 20, 50 years that if we don’t take immediate, drastic action, things will be irreversible. Well, we didn’t take action. It didn’t happen. Now the Gulf Stream is slowing, the poles are melting, and literally nothing is closer to getting done. We have passed the PONR.
Not only that, even if we hadn’t, the systems of power that humanity has built for itself have calcified and are no longer able to be changed.
The internet is a unique variable that makes this unfixable. In no other historical example I have been offered was the fundemental nature of reality not only universally in question, but there were billions of dollars and entire media companies dedicated to maintaining that oppositional reality. How is a popular mass movement supposed to arise if no one is even looking at the same world. This wasn’t able to happen before the internet.
The way that the modern internet arose was a series of decisions about convenience. But at the end of all of those decisions, our social spaces are owned and curated by companies who’s entire business model is to choose what you do and don’t see about the world in order to sell your eyeballs to advertisers. They build their systems to maximize engagement, which is part of why misinformation spreads so easily.
Because of that, the social momentum that needs to exist for popular movements to succeed can’t be created. But, even if they were, the system of power they would be pushing against is incapable of giving that change to them.
The way democracy is so broken (intentionally by people who profit from breaking it and won’t ever stop) means that even if we could get everyone to agree on what reality is, that wouldn’t matter because the political class has no reason to listen.
My phone is really infuriatingly slowly typing out these sentences so I’m going to stop elaborating there but TL;DR:
The world as it exists now, the systems by which it operates, are not capable of changing. The internet and Ronald Reagan broke things in a way that is different from every single other historical moment up to now.

With the rapid growth of LLMs we've seen an influx of personal/virtual/AI assistants, agents, companions and more. We've seen many of them before, such as Siri, Alexa, Bixby, etc. Now it seems like a new one emerges every day.
In my opinion, an effective AI assistant needs access to our daily life data. That's why I believe a self-hosted approach is essential. It ensures we have complete control over our data. By building the assistant with a self-hosted foundation, we can then offer the option to host it in the cloud for those who prefer the convenience of cloud-based services. This hybrid approach would provide the best of both worlds: data sovereignty for those who want it, and flexibility for those who prefer the cloud.
So I was wondering when you hear about such assistants, what comes to your mind? What would be the "perfect" assistant or companion, what should it be able to do?
I've been building an open-source assistant myself since 2017. It's been in beta version for years (been bad a shipping 😅). Recently I implemented an LLM with an offline-first approach, and I feel that the core of the project is finally maturing.

I'm 26f with toxic parents, my mom being main problem. She is the main reason of my depression and anxiety. I'm married to wonderful man from "normal" (non-toxic, but they had their fair share of problems) family. He sometimes doesn't get the feelings and quarrels between my parents and I in the moment of it happening, he has not-so-great memory, so I remind him of the things they'd done, that he witnessed himself throughout our relationship. He understands my past and all the anger accumulated throughout the years, and supports me in all my decisions. They tried hiding their true colors from him at the beginning but they underestimated him and his experience. He tends to shout them up quickly and elegantly, without having to argue or getting emotional, which I love. In the ideal world I would just cut contact completely with my mother, but that is not possible as she controls lifes of my father, younger brother and grandpa. Cutting her would mean having to give up on almost all of my close relatives, which after loosing my grandma two years ago I'm not willing to do. Another thing worth mentioning is we currently live in the apartment we rent from them (very cheaply) while we try to build a house, but we've lived here almost 6 years now as I was university student. We had a legal lease that got mutually broken the day after we got married, but we still pay them money as we never actually got copy of document breaking contract, all we have is photo I took of a handwritten paper we signed then and there. All I can safely do is make reasonable (at least in my head) boundaries and sustaining them with help of my husband. She tries to cross them but as of 2,5 years now I was able to get it "my way" with only couple major fights with her. Now I feel I need to change that approach as we want to try for a baby soon. I fear all the toxicity associated with my mother would cause harm in my future pregnancies, but I can't block her. I need someone to guide me through process of preparing myself, my husband and ultimately my parents for this moment. My husband feels like talking with my father alone first would be the most reasonable approach, but it can't be done, as firstly, she would have fit he knew about anything before her, secondly he is a pushover for her, not willing to intervene if it would disrupt his false peace, and lastly because he would lie to our faces telling us he'd help, only to not even speak with her about anything to save his own ass. I know this as it'd happened before with lesser subjects. They even have a "great idea" of moving closer to us to, quote my dad "repair our relationship", while she even said "then the potential grandchild would live with us so I would raise them as my child and be better mum than before". My husband and I had talked plenty of times, and while we both feel sick by those comments and their behavior, we never got any logical, coherent approach figured. We know what boundaries we want to set but don't know how to go about it. Our future children will never spend a day in their care without us, will never be left unsupervised, my parents won't be welcome to our place without proper notice, we don't want any advices and them becoming grandparents will not mean our relationship with them would magically improve as they would like to think. I've had nightmares and sleepless nights for weeks because of this. I know I can't make them comply, so I fell lost and stuck, how do I go about this thing?

I decided to write this post because I've been feeling particularly lonely lately. I suppose it all adds up, the weather, the monotonous routine of work, sleep, and occasionally something enjoyable in between. So I decided to give virtual friendships another shot - please bear with me.

Ambassador Loxsel had mentioned that the Sivkits wished to see humanity’s progress, as he phrased it, staking their claim to further-off thrones. With a fleet beelining its way from Paltan space toward the site of the incident, the theatrical Sivkit had graced us with his virtual presence. The entire Sapient Coalition was watching, uncertain how our ships would stack up against theirs. The humans would attempt to hail the unknown hostiles through their drones, from the border base, but I somehow doubted our new enemies would pick up. The research vessels had long since ducked away from the front lines, replaced by top-notch attack drones rushing toward an open class.
Gunning down civilian ships was easy, as Naltor put it to me. The weaponry did take them out with startling efficacy, but they hadn’t picked a target that could fight back. Onso had facilitated another meeting with Kaisal, and Zalk’s secure tech lines proved invaluable to setting up a back channel, cutting out the Yotul middleman. I found myself on edge, worried that our schemes would be discovered. Kaisal promised the Arxur were heading into the fray, as soon as news of the dead carnivores was leaked to him. It might’ve gotten Bissems a gift-wrapped fleet, but I was worried about complicating a situation that was already perilous.
“Now that they’re rushing off to war, and trying to save the Osirs, there’ll be no time to save Ivrana or look for the ghost exterminators,” Zalk complained. “We have to do this ourselves.”
The Osirs were the human’s chosen name for the extinct quadrupeds, crafted after a myth that had appalled several SC representatives. It was named after a god who’d been chopped into pieces by his brother, and brought back to life when the bits of his body were sewn together. Even I wasn’t sure I liked that analogy, but the Terrans found it fitting. They were trying to stitch the carnivores back together with pieces of genetic data; it was easier to obtain viable samples with the Osirs than other extinct races. They could be the race that led the way for others—researchers were hopeful to create a synthetic embryo for them within a few weeks, and start its development in an artificial womb.
I heaved a sigh. “The humans haven’t paused their work on our ecosystem, or the outreach with our diplomats to start peace talks. Between a global war at home and whoever killed the Osirs and the Sivkit expedition, are ghost exterminators really the biggest threat?”
“Of course they are,” the Tseia hissed. “They’re the ones who attacked us. We have no answers, but they’ll go to the ends of the galaxy for these Sivkits and Osirs!”
General Naltor narrowed his eyes. “Settle down, Zalk. Both tasks deserve attention, and with the magnitude of power needed to wipe out a spacefaring species…this is extremely worrying. We can’t expect them to care about us, if we don’t address their concerns. The Paltans are in immediate danger.”
“Which is why we need to keep them on the defensive, so they don’t wind up in our territory. You think they’ll spare Ivrana if they get that far? They already wiped out one carnivore race,” I spat.
“It doesn’t change that we’re on our own, Tassi!” The Tseia tugged at his headfeathers. “We have to figure out ways to be useful, to get anything from anyone.”
“That doesn’t have to be solely military. Be team players; offer aid and a safe haven to any who need it. That’d buy goodwill, so maybe one day, more than people-eating carnivores will back us.”
“What are you all whispering about?” Dustin’s voice made me jump, and the xenobiologist seemed to notice that his presence startled us all. I wondered what he would think if he knew we’d been skulking around to meet Kaisal, and drag the Collective into this to gain a fleet; somehow, I doubted he’d approve. “I haven’t said anything, but you lot have been acting strange ever since your visit to Leirn. What did the Yotul drag you into? It was strange how soon they flipped their tune on your SC bid.”
Naltor scowled. “You’re the one who tried to get us in touch with them to change our minds. We can do some things on our own.”
“Of course you can. I just…thought we were in this together, and would be more open with each other.”
“Dustin, you get regular memory scans. We can’t tell you anything we don’t want leaking to the galaxy, even if we do trust you to keep it in confidence aside from that,” I said, thinking quickly.
I never confronted him, but I don’t understand why he withheld so much about the Arxur. Dustin could say that it’s publicly available info…still, his version of events was much less flattering.
The human scientist frowned, but seemed to give in. “You have a point. I just wish I could help more. It’s hard to give advice when you’re being iced out.”
“You’re not being iced out, so much as the Yotul don’t want the Terran government involved,” Naltor offered a half-truth. “We can’t afford to have them turn on us. It doesn’t have to affect our friendship. We’ve been through some real shit together, nerd.”
“Yeah. We have, haven’t we? Now, we’re witnessing a new interstellar war. I know I’m supposed to provide reassurance, but that scares me a little. All hell’s broken loose since we met Bissems.”
“We feel the same about everything we learned about you; everything’s gone to shit. If you don’t beat these cloacabeaks today, then we’re doubly fucked.”
“Cloacabeak. You adopted my word?” Zalk gasped.
“Shut up, wanderbird. It’s time to see what the white and fluffy ball of drama has to say…and how the battle goes.”
Loxsel had finally moved close to the screen, after making a show of checking that his viewport was completely shuttered and his door was locked. Secretary-General Kuemper looked like she’d swallowed sawdust, as the Sivkit finally unmuted; she was worried what the character of an ambassador would have to say. On an adjacent screen, an alternating feed from the drone formation showed that they’d been booted from subspace. If the aggressors were still in the area, that would prove this system was of enough importance to defend. We’d find out whether they’d confront our inbound fleet soon; should they choose not to meet us, we’d get a read on the planet the Grand Herd had been bound for.
“Hello from c-captivity—for I am a free man in name only! The fateful day of your r-rampage has arrived. Prowl the fields where millions died!” Loxsel screeched. Wasn't it hundreds of thousands? “Salivate at what might have been. May your s-savage hunger carry you to victory!”
Kuemper managed to keep a straight face. “I hope we’ll get a proper assessment of the enemy capabilities, or better yet, contact them to understand why they attacked you. I also hope that the UN has been treating you well.”
“I am well-fed. Fattened for the s-slaughter! You should not talk to them, predator…yet you admire their b-butchery. You seek their massacre techniques for yourself. Generations of scrumptious bites gone, p-puffed out of existence. Don’t you savor to play with your food—the taste, excoriating their flesh?”
“Loxsel, we don’t consider Sivkits to be food. We’re here to lend a hand, like you asked us to. We’d like to have diplomatic relations with the Grand Herd, but we can’t manage that without a shred of…normalcy in what you say to us.”
“Then just kill them all. Whatever r-ruse you project toward these servile prey, your instincts howl for blood. Brethren of mine, slain by their craven debauchery, entrails scattered. We want these abominations off this world, and your almighty claws can deliver it!”
The Secretary-General’s pupils snapped toward him. “Why are you so set on this world in particular? Wouldn’t it be wiser for the Grand Herd to avoid this…craven debauchery by choosing another planet? It’s not like this one is brimming with vegetation; our long-range scans suggest it’s mostly desert.”
“You wouldn’t understand. All that matters to hunters is w-what lines your voracious stomach, and ruling over as much terrain as possible. We have purpose. We want what’s ours, yet is now blighted by vermin. It could not be b-bloodless, no! Despair at the infestation. I lament…what was snatched, wrenched from our pastures! It is an insult to have to turn to foul, rancorous b-beasts like you.”
“You came to us. You didn’t have to,” Kuemper hissed. “You insult us—”
“I am showering you with praises, odes to your c-cruelty! I apologize if I insulted you; I’ll step it up!”
“What does stepping it up look like?” Onso snickered from the crowd. “Go on, show us!”
“Rapacious m-menaces of Sol, ingesting war and death with insatiable appetite. Flayers of children, crushers of hope, terrors that flattened the cradle!”
“That wasn’t them. The humans fought to save us, and then rebuilt our home from scratch,” the Gojid Prime Minister interjected.
“The cradle was flattened, and that’s the part that matters! Where was I? Ahem. Unhallowed ones who stole the Arxur’s cattle for yourselves, who had Duerten minions perform the shadow caste’s execution…who broke our spines!”
Kuemper smacked her forehead. “We definitely didn’t do that. We could fix them even, if you stopped shunning us.”
“By fix, do you mean removing the bone altogether? Paralyzing us so it’s not a problem? I’m not so ‘Sivkit-brained’ to not see through your word lures!”
“If that’s what you truly think of us, then never mind. Humanity doesn’t want to be seen as monsters, and you hold us in such low regard. Why don’t we observe the battle in silence?”
“Yes, predator master! I won’t dare to raise my voice or interrupt your war cries again.”
Loxsel placed a paw on the top and bottom of his muzzle, as if manually holding it shut. The human leader’s exasperation was on full display, adding color to an otherwise tense and sober moment. Having been booted from FTL transit on the system’s fringes, the drones dispensed ammo on the disruptors to ensure they wouldn’t impede backup; that allowed them to tunnel slightly closer, before planet-based gravity distortions interrupted their progress again. Ship signatures appeared, warping in behind the UN armada from the direction they came. More automated foes crawled out of the woodwork throughout the system, thousands upon thousands of them waiting. There were also a colossal amount of hostiles marching out from the desert world.
Attempts to hail the foreign faction went unanswered; the Terrans even flashed blinking lights from the hull, in case traditional communications weren’t working for some reason. Our enemies zipped toward the SC fleet, this time not hiding that their guns were primed for the kill. While prepping for combat, our force spared a few resources toward scouring the system for signals, and trying to crack their encryption. Running their language through a translator matrix could help us gather intel—perhaps learning more about the attacks on the Sivkits and the Osirs. However, there was nothing of use we could pick up, besides the standard background radiation and our internal signals.
Why are these people so hostile to us, so adamant about driving anyone out of this system without any communication attempts?
It was evident that these murderous aliens had been expecting our return, judging by the uptick in ships stationed here. They started off by slinging particle beams, but the Terran spacecraft on the frontlines were generating strong magnetic fields—which could separate the charged rays. General Naltor was taking notes about the SC’s capabilities, just as he had during the general strategy briefing. It was a test of hurling offensive weapons at one another, and seeing if they could be parried or deflected. The enemy had numbers, having anchored themselves deeply to this system. Ambassador Loxsel should lose whatever attachment he had to this world in a hurry.
Our own particle beams weren’t countered by plasma or magnetic shielding, rather being absorbed by what appeared to be a layer of liquid armor; our weapons’ power fizzled within the water, as the simple medium scattered their heat. The battle of engineering appeared to be a stalemate so far, with each party finding a unique counter.
“Only predators could c-create such dastardly weapons!” Loxsel brayed, paws flying away from his snout. “They dreamed up the same base horrors as you. This is hunter against hunter, a contest of t-trickery. How primal…this can’t be my life! I want out!”
Kuemper raised a hand. “These aliens are clever, Loxsel. They figured out their own way to oppose our particle beams, but we have other weapons. The question is really who has the best weapon.”
“Bring out the antimatter! Launch them at the planet and hope it falls from the heavens like rain!”
“That is not how we operate, even if they did with the Osirs. If they somehow aren’t behind the Osirs’ deaths, then that’s not the signal we want to send about our terms of engagement.”
“Do you kill your prey by being boring? Because I’m about to…drop DEAD! Dead, I say!”
“You do that,” Onso heckled from the audience. “In silence.”
Kuemper’s comment about whoever would deliver the weapon that turned the tide rang true; someone needed to score major blows. These enemies must have the force to at least whittle us down with their superior numbers. In any other system, throwing twenty thousand SC drones would be enough to overrun the place, but this region of space was fortified to the teeth. As we crested to closer distances, each side tested the other’s ionic shields and armor with plasma, and point-defenses against mini-missiles. The deciding factor was indeed that home advantage, the terrain being familiar to our foes. The asteroid belt—and I mean all of it—came to life, with tens of thousands of giant rocks chucked at us with slingshots.
“Hey! That’s our move,” Dustin protested, as the SC drones reacted to the barrage of space rocks flying in all directions. “Maybe humans aren’t the craziest ones out there.”
Zalk gave him a perplexed glance. “The hostiles threw a plurality of their asteroid belt at you, and that’s your reaction?”
“What do you want me to say? That we probably don’t have enough explosive firepower, or time, to break them all up?”
“I see your drones desperately firing away from the ships, and weaving all about to avoid space rocks. How am I supposed to believe you can protect the Tseia when you are getting rolled?”
The human’s lips curved down. “There’s always a bigger fish, Zalk. They’re formidable…but we’ve ended bigger fish before, with a lot less at our disposal.”
“While I appreciate an attempt at a relatable metaphor, I wouldn’t go comparing yourself to fish. On Ivrana, all fish get eaten by us,” Naltor quipped.
“Fine. There’s always a bigger Bissem—and I’m looking right at him.”
“Half-feathered nerd.”
I looked toward the screen with worried eyes. “Is now the time for jokes and banter?”
“Gallows humor, Tassi,” Dustin sighed. “Beats doomspiraling, doesn’t it?”
I couldn’t help but to “doomspiral,” as the enemy seized our automatons’ moment of weakness. Our formation was scattered across all three axes, but each feed showed them under a similar asteroid siege. Recognizing that the Terran-led craft were on the back foot, the hostiles made use of their greater numbers at last; they hurled themselves at our front lines—ramming tactics that piled onto the existing debris barreling down on us. Our drones were being beaten into submission, flinging antimatter missiles at asteroid and foe alike.
The SC dispatched their nanodrones to attack by a thousand cuts, but dust guns smited these with equally small particles. Larger ships’ shielding could burn them in a heartbeat, yet the tiniest vessels struggled to reckon with them. Clearly, our enemies had a rotating arsenal for every situation. Asteroids crashed over the paltry physical shields, rendering them ineffective in blocking incoming fire. The humans looked a bit disheartened, seeing that the hostiles had an answer for every punch they threw.
Not hesitating to bring all of their friends to the party, space stations nestled within the asteroid belt revved to life. The enemy dumped warheads in our faces as well, just as our casualties were teetering on the edge of a catastrophic count. The Sapient Coalition was getting hit with everything under the ice shelf, all at once. I wasn’t even sure our nemeses had shown their entire hand, but they didn’t need to. Feeds across the drone fleet were going dead, limiting the rapidly alternating angles. Lights blinked out on the space map’s display feed.
The humans aren’t going to be able to avenge the Sivkits or the Osirs today. This is a swift, devastating loss. We can’t take them on their own turf…and I’m not sure we could, even outside of their territory!
Kinetics, lasers, particle beams, missiles, and asteroids vanquished SC vessels one by one, despite their last gasp of resistance. For all of Dustin’s gallows humor, I could see the human was internally doomspiraling—fearing a war on the scale of the one they put to bed twenty-three years ago. Ambassador Loxsel flopped to the floor as the last feed went dead, amid a sea of debris that marked all that was left of our fleet. The Sapient Coalition had some hard questions to ask themselves, about how they could stand up to an enemy on this level…and to consider whether it was worth it to engage at all.

1) What are the demands and are they reasonable?
SJP has brainrot demands that will never make a change. A better demand is a demand to help Palestinians migrate or find better support through asylum ect. The US will never abandon Israel nor will the surrounding middle eastern countries because they want to keep Irans power in check and a fun canal called the suez exists. One state solution will lead to millions of deaths on both sides and a disruption to a canal that supplies 9 billion dollars a day to the world. If that gets messed with there will be an actual genocide happening.
2) What is an effective means of protest?
Yall suck at protesting. Your being more of a annoyance than “protesting”. Have realistic demands and keep your ranks in line and absolutley kick out those that are not ie. people that genuinley want to genocide Israelis and vandals. [easy way to check is if they start even trying to justify oct 7 with colonialism memes they probably are either performing mental gymnastics or actual terroist sympathizers]
3) Who am I looking towards for help?
Yall if we are being honest divestment from defense contractors seems like an amazing idea but in reality, these defense contractors probably kept Israel from actually carpet bombing the population. Its a odd argument but a large part of the relative lack of civilian deaths has been due to precision strikes (as much of a meme as it is) Literally most funds for research are from the military or adjacent so yeh schools will bs theur “divestment” but in like a year they will start that shit back up.
4) Whether or not you think Palestine should exist or not, is it feasible and the best option? If you look at the history of Palestine and its current state right now, as ugly as it may seem to point out, the vast number of palestinians are uneducated religous radicals who actually will genocide Israelis (case in point intifada 1&2 six day war ect.) In comparative numbers this type of conflict will reflect death tolls of millions and not the current tens of thousands if the Palestinians do get a one state solution. A good example is to look at the Rwandan civil war. Hamas as a governing body is absolute garbage considering Palestine as a country has one of the highest aid to population density yet the poorest and least educated populus. This analysis seems crude but it is important to do a sociopathic utilitarian calculation.
5) Am I stupid?

I wanted to share my experience with hypnobirthing techniques here since I definitely searched Reddit for others’ accounts when deciding whether to try it out and would have liked to have found more. I will say that this is not a comprehensive review of all that is hypnobirthing. I can only speak on the material I personally interacted with, which is only a small slice of available hypnobirthing education. I read HypnoBirthing: The Mongan Method by Marie F. Mongan and Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better by Siobhan Miller, founder of The Positive Birth Company. I also used the Freya app from The Positive Birth Company. I did not take any classes or purchase any additional hypnobirthing material.
I am a trained scientist and tend to have a pretty skeptical approach to information I receive. So I came to hypnobirthing from a practical mindset rather than a “woo” one. However, I respect the importance of psychological effects, and hypnobirthing is all about that. I had heard good things about hypnobirthing from friends and acquaintances, and decided to explore it as a potential tool for coping with labor. I ended up finding it a very valuable approach on the whole.
Note that I did this in preparation to have my second child. My first was born via scheduled C-section due to being breech so I had not experienced labor before having my second child.
Summary:
The Mongan Method book was the first book on hypnobirthing I read. It was not to my taste but I believed the overarching premise that labor and birth are less painful when you are relaxed. I also found some of the specific relaxation exercises in the book to be helpful, so on the whole I’m glad to have read the book.
I found the book from The Positive Birth Company to be more aligned with my sensibilities, and relied on that more heavily for my practice. However I think it may be less potentially powerful for some people than the Mongan Method book would be (I’ll explain what I mean by that further down in my more detailed review of the book).
Hypnobirthing is all about conditioning yourself to relax, so the more you practice the techniques, the more you will get out of it (this is medical research based!). I didn’t go what I would consider all-out on practicing the techniques, but did make sure to spend 15 minutes per day from about 33 weeks pregnant til my delivery at 40 weeks. I’d say my experience of labor benefited quite a lot from my practice. I had an unmedicated labor and birth, and it wasn’t painless and serene throughout, but on the whole I feel pretty certain that the hypnobirthing techniques helped. Would recommend, would do again, would even invest more in hypnobirthing practice next time around!
Having not taken any hypnobirthing classes and having gotten a lot out of just reading about the techniques, I can say the classes aren’t strictly necessary for one to benefit from hypnobirthing techniques. However I imagine taking classes could be useful to encourage commitment to the practices, point you to more varied resources, and perhaps for learning to achieve a deeper state of self hypnosis.
Brief review of Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method by Marie F. Mongan
This is maybe the most popular hypnobirthing book, and the author is known for popularizing the technique, so I figured it’d be a good place to start.
While I’m glad to have read this book as I did get something out of it, I can’t say I liked this book on the whole. There were too many confidently phrased statements that stank of bullshit to me (i.e. women didn’t experience pain in childbirth until the patriarchy meddled in) and I felt the author unfairly demonized doctors and medical interventions. I’m not without my gripes about the general state of American obstetrics, but I couldn’t get on board with the level of disdain coming from the author here.
But here’s my more charitable take: I did appreciate the overarching premise here, which is that you experience less pain and faster progress during labor if you are relaxed and not fearful. Hypnosis can help with relaxation. I think this book is meant to serve as part of the hypnosis process. It’s plausible to me that if you go in to labor without anticipating a bad experience (believing labor doesn’t have to involve pain) or fear of complications requiring medical interventions (believing that the doctors are unnecessary), you will be more relaxed. Personally I was unwilling to be hypnotized by the book in the manner, but I think it could be very helpful for someone more aligned with the author.
I was undecided on whether to try hypnobirthing for my own labor after reading this book. Since I didn’t consider the author a trustworthy source, I was also tempted to file her claims of pain-free labors under “total bullshit.” As one way to help me decide whether to seek out other hypnobirthing education, I searched Reddit for hypnobirthing experiences to see if anyone on here reported a pain-free labor. And while the answer to that question was no, the hypnobirthing stories did seem to report way less pain and distress than the average birth story. Based on that and other factors I decided that I would continue to consider using hypnobirthing, but would need to seek out a different guide.
I did find value in certain relaxation techniques provided in the book, and used them during my relaxation practice. I liked the author’s suggested breathing techniques, the “ultra deepening techniques,” and the “rainbow relaxation.”
Brief review of Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better by Siobhan Miller
True to what the title suggests, I found this book a lot more practical than the Mongan Method book. It provided less in the way of highly suspicious statements and more in the way of, here’s a thing you can do to help your labor experience feel more pleasant.
The author also leans to the side of being anti-intervention, but much less so than the Mongan book. While I don’t think Miller’s stance on avoiding interventions would work for everyone, I found it pretty reasonable on the whole. Unlike Mongan, Miller actually discussed the possibility of needing interventions like an induction or C-section and encourages readers to consider their preferences for one. I appreciated her message that all sorts of births can be a positive experience, not just low-risk vaginal births.
That said, this book did feel like it had less potential to be “powerful magic” than Mongan’s book. But, that’s probably only true if you can buy in to Mongan’s messages, which I couldn’t. I found myself much more willing to follow Miller’s framing and advice since her book wasn’t as entrenched in a philosophy I did not trust.
Before reading the book, I was considering trying the virtual hypnobirthing course offered by the author’s company, The Positive Birth Company. However I saw some people on Reddit saying that the book contained about the same content as the course, and that they’d preferred the book. So, I didn’t bother with the course.
I did buy the Freya app from The Positive Birth Company, and found it very helpful. I often used the guided meditations available through the app during my relaxation practice sessions, and used both the guided meditations and “surge timer” during my labor.
How I practiced hypnobirthing conditioning:
At around 33 weeks, I started doing daily relaxation practice for at least 15 min per day, mostly right before falling asleep. I’d settle into bed, start playing a hypnobirthing music playlist on Spotify, and set a stop playing timer on my phone. I’d start with several rounds of “surge breathing” as described in Miller’s book, along with visualizing a hot air balloon inflating and then floating off into the sunset lit hills around a valley filled with golden wheat. I’d then usually start playing one of the guided meditations through the Freya app, or else mentally go through one of the relaxation sequences described in Mongan’s book. By the time the timer stopped the music, I’d usually be feeling very relaxed and ready to fall asleep.
I tried some of the partnered activities with my husband, like light touch massage, but that only happened a small handful of times and we didn’t really end up practicing together on a regular basis.
In general I tried to avoid reading negative news stories and traumatic birth stories. I didn’t spend a whole lot of time reading positive birth stories but went through several on Reddit and The Positive Birth Company’s website.
How I used hypnobirthing techniques for my ECV:
My baby was breech at my 36 week appointment, so I scheduled an ECV (baby turning procedure) for 37 weeks. One of the things that influences ECV success rates is the relaxation of the abdominal and uterine muscles. I would be given drugs to facilitate that (a spinal and a tocolytic), but I figured trying to keep my whole body relaxed using hypnobirthing techniques wouldn’t hurt.
While receiving IV fluids and waiting for the procedure to start, I listened to my hypnobirthing music playlist and used surge breathing and my hot air balloon visualization. I was hooked up to a heart rate monitor at the time and it was fascinating to hear how the extended exhalation of the surge breathing really did slow my heart rate! When it came time to do the procedure, I used more surge breathing to try and stay calm. When the doctor started pushing on my abdomen I felt myself reflexively tense up, but consciously tried to release and relax instead. The procedure was a very quick success, and my doctor joked about being ready to accept her reward for “fastest ECV ever.”
How I used hypnobirthing techniques for my labor:
I packed my hospital bag with a lot of things to try and transform the labor room, including battery powered tea lights, a digital photo frame loaded with photos of my toddler’s life so far, a portable speaker and noise-cancelling headphones, a yoga mat, a comfy labor and delivery gown and grippy socks, and lots of things I imagined I might like to drink or snack on.
During early labor, my contractions were quite variable. They first started getting more intense in the middle of the night a bit less than 24 hours before my baby was born, and I got out of bed to put on my hypnobirthing music playlist and started to breathe through and time my surges using the Freya app. They were about 8 minutes apart at that point, and were definitely a bit painful but I wasn’t distressed over the pain at all. The breathing was helping me get through them and I felt both calm and excited all at once. Then the contractions became less intense and I decided to stop breathing/timing and go back to bed.
In the morning, the contractions were coming about once every 10 minutes, and I felt the need to stand while leaning and breathe through each one, but was able to stay calm. When they picked up in frequency and intensity, again to about one every 8 minutes, I watched some comedy shows as suggested by Miller’s book while bouncing on my exercise ball. Meanwhile I used the Freya app to help me breathe through and time my contractions.
I tried playing with my toddler for a bit but found I needed to stop playing with her when a contraction hit, which she became upset by. I found this stressful and the distress made my contractions feel a lot more painful, so I decided it was time to let my mother-in-law (who had just come to stay with us the evening before) take over my toddler.
I then called my doula to come over and took a bath while listening to my hypnobirthing music and the guided meditations on the Freya app. I found this very relaxing even as my contractions became more frequent and intense. Yes, there was pain, but I felt confident I could get through each contraction with my surge breathing. I was very focused on trying to remain and comfortable and calm as possible and felt I was succeeding and doing well. My contractions were about 6 minutes apart at that point.
After my doula arrived I was very very focused on laboring. It became more difficult to feel comfortable and relaxed, and the contractions were undeniably painful, but I was able to stay calm using my surge breathing. Weirdly, despite the increasing intensity of my contractions, they were not getting more frequent and not reaching the 5 minutes apart stage, so we all thought I had not reached active labor yet. Around 11 PM I was getting very tired and told my doula I might like to go to the hospital for an epidural in order to get some sleep, despite not being in active labor yet. She expressed concern that getting an epidural before I’d entered active labor might stall my progression, and recommended I go lay down in bed instead. I did so, but shortly after started feeling what I now realize was the urge to push.
We decided it was time to head to the hospital. On the way out the door, my water broke, and I was involuntarily pushing on the car ride over with now more frequent contractions. I kept up my surge breathing but was feeling much more pain as I was not able to position myself comfortably in the car.
Once we got to the hospital, the nurses announced that I was fully dilated and ready to push. Once in the delivery room I lost my cool. I was told to get on my back, which I hadn’t wanted, and told to hold my breath to push, which I hadn’t wanted. I felt unable to argue in the moment and tried to comply, but absolutely lost my hypnobirthing calm and started yelling as I pushed. Thankfully that stage didn’t last too long though, and I managed to push out a healthy baby girl.
After the delivery my doula commented to the nurses that she hadn’t realized how close I’d been to delivering since I’d been coping so well through my laboring at home. I credit most of that to my hypnobirthing practice. It’s a little ironic that I didn’t get the chance to use any of the labor supplies in my hospital bag. While at home I kept thinking the real deal active labor was still ahead!
Overall: my experience in the delivery room was unpleasant and painful but also fairly short, so I think of things as having gone very well on the whole. Preparing for labor via hypnobirthing made me feel excited to get to experience labor, and now that I’ve done so I can say I would still like to experience it again if we have a third child. It’s not something I’d do for funsies but as a way to bring my child outside my body I am happy to repeat the process again. It wasn’t painless, but my hypnobirthing techniques gave me confidence in being able to handle the pain and for the most part I did manage to stay calm and happy throughout most of my labor. And when comparing my own labor to the other birth stories I’ve heard, I do think I experienced much less pain and distress than average. In some ways I’m sure I just got lucky in terms of what my body ended up doing, but I also really believe that the hypnobirthing techniques helped!
Conclusions
I believe learning about and practicing hypnobirthing techniques was a great way for me to mentally prepare for labor, stay more relaxed and calm during labor, and get through while experiencing less pain than I might have otherwise.
In terms of hypnobirthing resources, I only have direct knowledge of the two books I read. I’d personally recommend Siobhan Miller’s book over Marie F. Mongan’s book, especially if you’re skeptical about hypnobirthing and wonder if you might have a less hypnotizable personality.
If you commit to practicing hypnobirthing techniques as described in a book of your choosing, you can still benefit from them during your labor without taking a separate hypnobirthing class. Since I didn’t take any classes I can’t say how much more helpful that might have been for me, but I can say I personally got a lot out of reading the books.

Sponsorship is one of our keys to success. Sponsors are OA members committed to abstinence and to living the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions to the best of their ability. Sponsors share their program up to the level of their experience and strengthen their recovery through this service to others. To find a sponsor, look for someone who has what you want and ask how he or she is achieving it. Will all abstinent sponsors please identify themselves in their post?

If you need to talk more about your difficulties and seek solutions, we suggest you speak to your sponsor and other members after the meeting.

American is literally the baby in comparison to all other governing countries UK, ROME, Germany. How is it possible that America got to be this great world power at only 247 years old????

This is a doozy, but I'll try to keep it brief as brief as possible.
TL/DR: teenagers are expensive, she has a good life, but child support could give her the extras she's craving. What are the risks? What are pitfalls? Could it be worth it?
I had a baby 14 years ago. She's my world, I love being a mom, and have been fortunate enough to have a solid middle middle class lifestyle. But, the cost of things like summer camp, sports, and activities as a teenager are starting to overwhelm me, and before I start issuing blanket no's to things she cares a lot about, I thought I'd investigate child support possibilities.
Here's some facts-

• This was fling, so we were never married.
• We live in OH and he lives in WA, but DD was born in a completely different state.
• No legal action has been taken so far- He's not on the birth certificate, and there's no custody or child support order in place.
• Paternity hasn't been legally established, though early on we did an independent one that was conclusively positive.
• He's seen her one time, when she was a toddler. He's not a terrible guy, but wasn't ready for parenthood. I've never denied access, but haven't heard from him in years. I've tried to reach him to work something out to no avail.
• He's not from the US but is married to an American, so I'm not sure of his status. It's all above board as far as I know.
• I do have an address for him, but have no idea where he works or how much he makes.
• She goes to good schools, gets good grades, we're active in the community, our home life is stable, and I'm a good mom- so I'm not worried about my parenting being questioned even if he wants to push it.
• She's the only child for both of us. I've never married, and have been mostly single since she was born- focusing on being a mom and growing my career.

Here are my questions:

• Right now, he's not on the Birth Certificate. Will he be added if we establish paternity and support? That would have to be done in the state where she was born, right? Do states automatically send that sort of thing to each other?
• Can he compel me to change her last name (she currently has my maiden name, and the same last name of my family (her village)). I don't want her to feel alienated by a sudden, unwanted name change. If he wanted to try this, he'd need to file in her birth state?
• I know that he could have worked to establish parental rights without my consent, but so far has chosen not to. If this action triggers him to file for visitation or custody, would he have a case? He hasn't shown any interest or support in 12 years, which I can't imagine would help his case.
• Will the courts consider her age and wishes?
• Is it even worth it? Are there risks I'm not thinking about?
