'After 13 years': Marcos to sign bill doubling teaching supply allowance to P10,000
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is set to approve a bill increasing teaching supplies allowance from P5,000 to P10,000 starting School Year (SY) 2025-2026 in a ceremonial signing into law on Monday.
This was revealed to the public last Thursday night through an invitation sent by the Presidential Legislative Liason Office to ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro.
The ceremonial re-enactment of the signing into law of the "Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act" is set for June 3, 2024 at the Malacañan Palace in Manila. The letter was signed by PLLO Secretary Mark Llandro Mendoza.
"After a long fought battle to increase the Teaching Supplies Allowance (or chalk allowance) of teachers, the 'Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act' is now a law, hiking the current P5,000 teaching supplies allowance to P10,000," said the party in Filipino.
"This law was first filed by the ACT Teachers Party-list in 2011 and was brought to the forefront for years before being officially passed into law."
Teachers have long been clamoring for the said increase since the current allowance couldn't cover all the expenses needed to buy enough chalk, erasers, forms and other classroom suppplies. As a result, educators have been taking out money from their own pockets.
Said party-list spearheaded the most recent measure in the House of Representatives, which was later on passed in December 2023, with their approved version providing for P7,500 for SY 2024-2025 and P10,000 for SY 2025-2026 onwards.
Its counterpart bill in Senaate was likewise passed in May 2023. However, only P5,000 haas been granted for SY 2024-2025 in the reconciled Senate Bill 1964 and House Bill 9682 of the Bicameral Conference Committee.
It was officially transmitted to the Office of the President last May 3, 2024.
'Proof that collective action works'
In a separate statement, the Alliance of Concerneed Teachers (ACT) Philippines last Friday attributed the bill's passage to the tireless efforts of teachers and progressive supporters.
"This is proof that we could achieve victories through collective action alongside our genuine representatives inside the Congress, the ACT Teachers Party-list, who since 2011 have filed the bill seeking for the increase of teaching supplies allowance for our public school teachers," said Vladimer Quetua, ACT chairperson.
"Teachers have long been spending their own money for school supplies. Yearly, we take out a huge amount from our own pockets to fix classrooms. This includes teaching aid costs that we use for the benefit of children."
ACT likewise reiterated its call for a salary increase, including a P50,000 entry-level pay for teachers, P33,000 salary for salary grade 1 employees, SG16 for Instructor 1 in state universities and colleges, and P33,000 national minimum wage for all workers.

Hello! I am the Springfield Massachusetts Tornado, and today is my birthday!
Today I turn 13 years old, jeez how time flies by….
I was the strongest tornado of the New England Outbreak of 2011, despite my force and ferocity the NWS scumbags only rated me as an EF3!!!
I was so fumed to find out about the ratings, I am sure this reddit page can vouch for me in terms of how stupid the NWS really is, especially my bestest friend foreva El Reno, because we all know El Reno SHOULDVE BEEN a EF5! I do intend to make a devious return for the upcoming future, to show those NWS fools who I really am.. 😈😈😈
I am inviting everyone to a party this evening (except for Joplin, fuck Joplin). It would be great if you all could come, I hope to see you all there.
Oh and also the NWS is not invited, nor anyone from /tornado. Yk what only real ferocious tornados like I and El-Reno are invited.

2024.06.01 12:02 Normodox A Slush Fund for Radical Protesters?

The profusion of identical green tents at this spring’s anti-Israel protests struck many as odd. “Why is everybody’s tent the same?,” asked New York mayor Eric Adams. Like others, the mayor suspected “a well-concerted organizing effort” driving the protests. More recent reporting shows a concerted push behind the Gaza protest movement. But it is not as simple as a single organization secretly rallying protesters or buying tents. Instead, the movement’s most determined activists represent a network of loosely linked far-left groups. Some are openly affiliated with well-known progressive nonprofits; others work in the shadows.
The movement also draws on diverse but generous sources of financial backing. Those funding streams may soon be augmented by the federal government. As I chronicled last year in a Manhattan Institute report, “The Big Squeeze: How Biden’s Environmental Justice Agenda Hurts the Economy and the Environment,” the administration’s massive program of environmental justice grants seems designed to prioritize the funding of highly ideological local groups. The Inflation Reduction Act, for example, earmarks $3 billion for “environmental and climate justice block grants” intended for local nonprofits. Today, hundreds of far-left political groups include language about environmental issues and “climate justice” in their mission statements. If just a fraction of planned grants flows to such groups, the effect will be a gusher of new funding for radical causes.
As the Gaza protests spread across U.S. college campuses, many observers noted an eerie uniformity among them. From one campus to the next, protesters operated in disciplined cadres, keeping their faces covered and using identical rote phrases as they refused to talk with reporters. The Atlantic noted the strangeness of seeing elite college students “chanting like automatons.” Students held up keffiyeh scarves or umbrellas to block the view of prying cameras and linked arms to halt the movements of outsiders. At Columbia University and elsewhere, protesters formed “liberated zones,” from which “Zionists” were excluded. Around the edges of the encampments, the more militaristic activists donned helmets and goggles and carried crude weapons, apparently eager to mix it up with police or counter-protesters. We’ve seen these tactics before—notably during the “mostly peaceful” Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, when full-time agitators helped ignite riots, set up a police-free (and violence-plagued) zone in Seattle, and laid nightly siege to Portland, Oregon’s federal courthouse.
In a remarkable work of reporting, Park MacDougald recently traced the tangled roots of organizations backing pro-jihad protests, both on and off campuses. These include Antifa and other networks of anonymous anarchists, along with “various communist and Marxist-Leninist groups, including the Maoist Revolutionary Communist Party, the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), and the International ANSWER coalition,” MacDougald writes. Higher up the food chain, we find groups openly supported by America’s growing class of super-rich tech execs or the anti-capitalist heirs of great fortunes. For example, retired tech mogul Neville Roy Singham, who is married to Code Pink founder Jodie Evans, funds The People’s Forum, a lavish Manhattan resource center for far-left groups. As the Columbia protests intensified, the center urged members to head uptown to “support our students.” Following the money trail of other protest groups, MacDougald finds connections to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Ford Foundation, and—surprising no one—the George Soros-backed Tides Foundation.
Of course, the current wave of anti-Israel protests also involves alliances with pro-Hamas organizations such as Students for Justice in Palestine. Last November, Jonathan Schanzer of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies testified to the House Ways and Means Committee that SJP and similar groups have deep ties to global terrorist organizations, including Hamas.
For many keffiyeh-wearing protestors, however, a recently professed concern for Palestinians is just the latest in a long list of causes they believe justify taking over streets and college quads. In Unherd, Mary Harrington dubs this medley of political beliefs the “omnicause,” writing that “all contemporary radical causes seem somehow to have been absorbed into one.” Today’s leftist activists share an interlocking worldview that sees racism, income inequality, trans intolerance, climate change, alleged police violence, and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts all as products of capitalism and “colonialism.” Therefore, the stated rationale for any individual protest is a stand-in for the real battle: attacking Western society and its institutions.
In the U.S., this type of general-purpose uprising goes back at least to the riots at the 1999 meeting of the World Trade Organization in Seattle. In those protests, mainstream liberal factions—including labor unions and environmentalists—were joined by “black bloc” anarchists and other radicals eager to engage in “direct action” against police. That pattern—relatively moderate demonstrators providing a friendly envelope for hard-core disruptors—formed the template for many later protests: the Occupy Wall Street encampments in 2011, demonstrations following the police shooting of Michael Brown in 2014, 2016’s Standing Rock anti-pipeline movement, and of course, the calamitous summer of 2020.
These uprisings were not entirely spontaneous. In some cases, activists spend months planning mass actions—for example, against economic summits or political conventions—and can recruit street fighters from across the country. In others, an event, such as George Floyd’s death, sparks popular protests involving neophyte demonstrators. Those attract far-left activists, who swoop in to organize and expand the struggle, often tilting it toward more radical action.
That has certainly been the case at the college Gaza-paloozas. At Columbia, the New York Times spotted a woman old enough to be a student’s grandmother in the thick of the action as protesters barricaded that school’s Hamilton Hall. The woman was 63-year-old Lisa Fithian, a lifetime activist, who Portland’s alternative weekly Street Roots approvingly calls “a trainer of mass rebellion.” A counter-protester trying to block the pro-Hamas demonstrators told NBC News, “She was right in the middle of it, instructing them how to better set up the barriers.” Fithian told the Times she’d been invited to train students in protest safety and “general logistics.” She claims to have taken part in almost every major U.S. protest movement going back to the 1999 “Battle in Seattle.”
America’s radical network has plenty of Lisa Fithians, with the time and resources to travel the country educating newcomers about the “logistics” of disruptive protests. And these activists appear to have played key roles in the college occupations. The New York City Police Department says nearly half the demonstrators arrested on the Columbia and City University of New York (CUNY) campuses on April 30 were not affiliated with the schools. One hooded Hamilton Hall occupier—photographed scuffling with a Columbia custodian before getting arrested—turned out to be 40-year-old James Carlson, heir to a large advertising fortune. According to the New York Post, Carlson lives in a $2.3 million Park Slope townhouse and has a long rap sheet. For example, in 2005, he was arrested in San Francisco during the violent “West Coast Anti-Capitalist Mobilization and March Against the G8.” (Those charges were dropped.)
For a quarter-century now, Antifa and other anarchist networks have worked to refine tactics and share lessons following each major action. At Columbia, UCLA, and other schools, authorities found printouts of a “Do-It Yourself Occupation Guide” and similar documents. The young campus radicals are eager to learn from their more experienced elders. And, like the high-achieving students they are, they follow directions carefully. MacDougald asked Kyle Shideler, the director for homeland security and counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy, about the mystery of the identical tents. There was no need for a central group to distribute hundreds of tents, Shideler said. Instead, “the organizers told [students] to buy a tent, and sent around a Google Doc with a link to that specific tent on Amazon. So they all went out and bought the same tent.”
In other words, America’s radical class has gotten very skilled at recruiting and instructing new activists—even from among the ranks of elite college students with a good deal to lose. How much more could this movement accomplish with hundreds of millions in federal dollars flooding activist groups around the country?
From its first week in office, the Biden administration has trumpeted its goal to funnel more environmental spending toward “disadvantaged communities that have been historically marginalized,” partly by issuing grants to grassroots organizations. Previous environmental justice (EJ) grant programs were small in scope. But, with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in August 2022, a huge pool of grant money became available. EPA administrator Michael Regan told reporters, “We’re going from tens of thousands of dollars to developing and designing a program that will distribute billions.”
More than a year and a half later, it remains hard to nail down just where the Biden administration’s billions in EJ grants will wind up. Money is being distributed through a confusing variety of programs, and the process of identifying recipients is ongoing. To help outsource the job of sifting through proposals, the EPA last year designated 11 institutions as “Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmakers.” These groups are empowered to make subgrants directly to community organizations, under streamlined EPA oversight. In all, the Biden administration has entrusted these outfits with distributing a staggering $600 million in funding. The money is expected to start flowing this summer.
The EPA’s grantmakers include a number of educational institutions and left-leaning nonprofits. For example, the EPA chose Fordham University as its lead grantmaker in the New York region. Fordham, in turn, lists as partners two nonprofits that oppose immigration enforcement. (One, the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice, states on its website: “NJAIJ believes in the human right to migrate, regardless of citizenship or political status.”) Neither group claims expertise in environmental issues. Given that the IRA’s eligibility requirements for EJ grants are extremely vague, however, perhaps that’s not a problem. Almost any activity that could help “spur economic opportunity for disadvantaged communities” (in the words of Biden’s EJ executive order) might qualify.
Perhaps the most prominent—and problematic—EPA grantmaker is the Berkeley, California-based Climate Justice Alliance. The CJA is a consortium of mostly far-left activist groups. It describes its mission as working for “regenerative economic solutions and ecological justice—under a framework that challenges capitalism and both white supremacy and hetero-patriarchy.” The group is a vigorous proponent of the omnicause, embracing almost every left-wing concern as a manifestation of climate change. For example, the CJA website proclaims: “The path to climate justice travels through a free Palestine.” MacDougald notes that the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, one of CJA’s affiliated groups, “organized an illegal anti-Israel protest in the Capitol Rotunda in December at which more than 50 activists were arrested.”
The CJA website also includes a section dedicated to the cause known as Stop Cop City. It refers to an effort to halt the construction of an 85-acre police and firefighter training center outside Atlanta. Rag-tag activists from around the country have gathered around the facility since 2021. They have repeatedly battled with police—sometimes with fireworks and Molotov cocktails—and used bolt cutters to enter the site and torch construction equipment. (CJA’s Stop Cop City page features a cartoon illustration of three childlike activists; one brandishes bolt cutters.) The group also backs a legal defense fund for activists arrested in attacks on the training center or in other protests. For those looking for more inspiration, CJA links to an interview with former Black Panther and self-described revolutionary Angela Davis.
The Alliance is not an ideological outlier in Biden’s EJ coalition. On the contrary, when the White House assembled its White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council (WHEJAC), a panel of outside experts meant to provide “horizon-expanding EJ advice and recommendations,” it chose CJA co-chair Elizabeth Yeampierre to help lead the committee. Like other members of the panel, she sees environmental issues through an ideological, not a scientific, lens. “Climate change is the result of a legacy of extraction, of colonialism, of slavery,” Yeampierre told Yale Environment 360. As a group, radical EJ activists tend not to focus on pragmatic ways to reduce pollution and carbon emissions; for them, the real goal is overturning what they see as an exploitative economic and political system. Since these are the voices the White House chose to help shape its EJ policies, we can assume this worldview will dominate grantmaking decisions.
In February 2023, House Oversight Committee chairman James Comer, along with fellow committee member Pat Fallon, wrote to EPA administrator Regan asking for more information on the EPA’s grant programs. They noted that the EPA’s own studies of EJ grants issued in previous years showed sloppy supervision. According to an EPA report, an earlier version of the program funded projects that did “not logically lead to the desired environmental and/or public health [result].” Without better oversight and more clearly defined goals, the congressmen wrote, the EPA’s EJ grant machine risks becoming simply a “slush fund for far-left organizations.”
Since then, the administration has done little to reassure skeptics. To the contrary, the EPA has put at least one far-left organization—CJA—in charge of distributing $50 million in grant money. No doubt, many of the EPA grants will go to worthwhile projects. But money is fungible. A group that gets a large grant to, say, clean up dirty parks or teach children about recycling will also be able to hire more staff and divert more resources to political action.
With graduation behind them, most of the anti-Israel college protesters have stowed away their keffiyehs and moved on to summer vacations or internships. But the peripatetic activists who helped guide and intensify those uprisings are doubtless already planning their next actions. After all, two political conventions are looming. This fall, the college protests will likely flare up again, though by then perhaps focused on a different facet of the omnicause. And, with hundreds of millions in fresh funding flowing through the activist ecosystem, the groups that quietly nurture extremists—like those who firebombed “Cop City,” or who chant “Intifada Revolution!,” or who block bridges in the name of “climate”—will be more emboldened than ever.

2024.05.31 15:32 danmybhoy132 my 1980s

My 1980's

Although life seemed dreary and bleak it wasn’t, I just got a brand new pair of roller boots. It took me a while then I got the hang of them I was one of the first in my street to get a pair so there were all the neighbors' kids wanting a go on them. I let some of the people play with them I charged them 10 pence and got myself my own lunch in school for a week I felt like a had a job. My mum was in wonder all the time, I was pulling out money in all directions and she couldn’t put food on the table. So I done the right thing gave her last four pounds I managed to save and we had a hearty meal for about three days. If she was happy I was happy. My sisters were jealous of all the new friends I made because of my roller boots. They devised a plan that would leave me hurt and embarrassed. Dyane took a screwdriver from the kitchen drawer and went out to the landing. She had to be very quiet because the full close echoed and you didn’t want to wake up Maggie Murphy, she stayed on the top floor and mum said if we were bad in any way we would need to go to Maggie Murphy’s house and live. Truth be told we never actually seen Maggie we just heard how bad she was usually just after we got caught being mischievous. Dyane took the screwdriver and took out four screws from the wheel and soul of the boot. This was dangerous and silly but sibling rivalry in our home wasn’t rare. Me having no idea about the looseness of the skates would go out on them tomorrow to show off, because I was great at the stopping and starting. Dyane tiptoed back down the hallway putting the tool back in the drawer and sneaking to bed, I heard a noise but thought nothing of it and as quick as I reacted I was asleep. The morning time hit and it was Saturday, I loved Saturday me they always seemed to go on forever and some of the best times you had my age are on a Saturday, So my dad used to say anyway. Now four people at my bit had roller boots and we wanted to go do something like a skating trip to the loch six miles away, we would walk up and then skate around a few times, it was only six miles away near Coatbridge. My dad used to say we should move to Coatbridge he said that’s where all the catholic family’s stayed. My dad was one of them activist people you hear about fighting for the cause he called it. I don’t really understand what that meant but I grew up with him so what he did I copied naturally. We arrived at the loch a whole hour later, the reason we got there late is that my mate Richey saw an ice cream van driving about and we wanted some sweeties and chocolate for a picnic we thought since we’re going to the loch we might as well get hyper on all the chocolate. When we got to the ice cream van we heard music coming from it. “ A band called wham” the guy said it was impressive. I didn’t get know what a jitterbug was but I sure wanted one after hearing that song. We bought all this sugar filled sherbet and chocolate for the park of course most of it was gone by the time we got there. It was quite chilly at Drumpellier Loch that day. In fact it’s always cold I don’t ever remembering it being warm in the slightest. Maybe I should have learned and brought a coat. But I am young what can I do? That’s what mum used to use an excuse when I did bad stuff like smash Mrs Roberts’s window with a frog that time. I know it sounds weird a frog. How the hell? Basically I went to the burn one day in my wellies to get tadpoles, caught loads of the things I was well chuffed. I left them in a tub under my bed, forgetting about them they grew eventually to frogs. I smelt this horrible smell one day and went under the bed; a place mum dare not go. There were four small frogs they must have eaten the smaller frogs to survive. I was happy but scared in case mum found out no doubt she’d get Maggie down to shout as me or I’d have to see her my mum says her face has scars and she’s a real rough hooker, or looker. I cant remember what she said that well. I threw the frogs out the back window not knowing my mum was there I screamed and she turned her head I tried to lob the frog over the bin area walls onto the grass behind before she realised that I wasn’t just popping my head out to say hello. She continued hanging the washing unaware that I just threw a frog through Mrs Roberts’s window and she was now chasing a frog about her kitchen screaming. Shortly my mum noticed a distress and went over to see what was going on by this time she had got a lot of attention, she was still in pursue of the hopper her Zima frame couldn’t keep up with the feisty cannibal frog. My mum turned around and gave me THE STARE. This was meant for really bad times its as if just in that moment when she realises what you have done, death posses her looks straight at you, the saying goes” if looks could kill” My mums looks wouldn’t just kill they would torture, slap you with the big ring hand and chase you with a belt until you said sorry. Then kill you. We sat around the loch looking at the evil swan monster from the side cautiously “because they can kill you with one wing”. Richey said. The loch was nice and we seen all the baby ducks they were lovely better pet than frogs but the park ranger said we couldn’t lift them up because they weren’t ducks they were baby swans and that was the reason the big mum swan was hissing at us. We ran away. Two other guys we were with, whose names escape me left the two of us about an hour later Richey and me stayed and eventually put our boots on and started skating. “My feet feel weird man,” I said twice rolling down the biggest hill. Suddenly and without warning one of my Skates broke, the back wheel went flying and so did I. Right into the loch.. Richey stopped looked in shock and came chasing after me. I was in the water I couldn’t swim I was being pulled out into the middle, apparently underground suction pipes cleaned the water its been known before for people to get caught in these pipes and drown, so the stories say. I was scared and screaming. Miles from the rubber ring thing and Richey leaped in and swam toward me in a daze of water and faintness. The last words I remember speaking were “Please don’t let me die. My life flashed before my eyes. It showed me my family, my mum and uncle tam, my dad and sisters the two of them. I collapsed into the water. Blurry vision and a sore head I awoke in a hospital bed. My sister was crying.”Dyane why are you crying are you okay? Who died?” I said. “You nearly died. You and it was my fault I was jealous of the attention. I broke your skates please! Oh please don’t tell mum,” she replayed. I made a promise never to speak of it again because I loved my sisters and this is beyond Maggie Murphy bad this was like adoption bad. That was when these people who you don’t know come to your house and take your kids away. I saw it happen to Mr Higgins on my street. After his wife died of alcohol abuse or aids I forget what one. He was left with his two daughters and mum said “freaky going on in that house son I tell ye.” Later that week they took his daughters to a far away place, called Paisley. I never heard of it. My mum was still in shock and I was still in bed recovering now at home. Richey came to see me. He was always talking about the loch and what happened I didn’t like hearing about it because I was still a bit shaken up, even worse than that time I was dangled with my feet over the top flat veranda as a dare. When I got better mum made her lovely soup she did in the big pot, that’s when you know the family is coming. To see me apparently, because of what happened. I ate my soup so fast because I never had anything decent to munch in when I was bed resting except fruit, oh and did you know? Tomatoes are a fruit. I learned that when the doctor told me to eat healthy to regain stealth and fitness. For the next couple of weeks the house smelt like damp, it was cold and we thought the roof was going to fall in so we had to be moved out to number 65 at the top of the road before anything serious happened. A month later still nothing heard. A whole Three months went before it happened. “BOOOM” our old house roof blew right off. A gas explosion the papers said. I thought getting the damp was lucky meant where not dead. Mum seen this as a sign and my sisters where pretty hurt because they said they wanted to grow up in that house until they could leave. Mum seen this as a curse she said we didn’t go to Chappell enough and that’s what god does to protestant houses. Time past, three years in fact I left school and got myself a job working on the Glasgow building site near Easterhouse. I used to have to walk through a bad area known at Toi. Barlanark and Toi fought every weekend in a gang fight. I tried not to take part but sometimes you get caught in the middle and the anger builds up and you just burst into this infuriated madman and punch and kick and even throw glass bottles. Gang fighting at my bit was notorious, crazy and violent. I remember getting a taxi home one night and I said Barlanark please. The taxi driver looked at me like a just spat on his wain and said,” bit rough there is it no” “ if you know the right people life goes by without trouble.” I said to him. He locked the taxi doors and rolled up the windows thinking I wasn’t going to pay because the area I live in. I paid him the fair but no tip and headed down the badly lightened lane toward my door. I saw a couple of shadowy figures at My Close wondering what was going on but being sly and not letting them see me. One of the men came into light and I recognised him from Toi. This wasn’t a good sign. They had a petrol Bomb. My mum and dad are in that house; my sisters are away on a school trip thankfully. I didn’t want anything to happen to my folks because of something I did stupidly getting involved with a gang fight. Then it occurred to me they aren’t going to throw that in my house. They were after Richey. He got into some trouble with a drug dealer and couldn’t pay him for whatever reason and this was his revenge. I needed a distraction to help out my mate. “ OI the polis” I shouted. The thugs then lit the petrol Bomb and threw it toward his window “Catholic junkie scum” I heard them shout. The bomb missed the middle floor flat of the close and Landed at the bottom of the stairs. I shouted up to him to bring down water then looked down. I was on fire. “Stop drop and roll stop drop and roll,” I kept saying so I did I had to take of my jeans and stomp on them. They where ruined. In the midst of all the smoke and fire the whole street appeared to see what the commotion was. Richey ran down to see if I was okay. The police arrived. Sectarianism and gang fighting was major in Barlanark. Tensions were always high in the local pub. I’ve witnessed a chair going through the window more than once. Tension mounted because of the football game. The Winners cup, the final round. Celtic v Rangers. Celtic won. Rangers and Celtic fans everywhere caused mayhem. Our street once again divided between religions. What religion had to do with football I don’t know but the hatred between these people, once friends now enemies because of a football team. All I heard was I.R.A, U.D.A. it was nothing new that’s all you got in the news papers as well for four years there’s been non stop terror. Because of religion. Living in Glasgow in this time is like living in Ireland. There was so much temptation going on around me it was just a matter of time before I got sucked in to a fight or three. Dad died, man it was a hard time. Depression hit my mum hard, my sisters now lived in a flat in Castlemilk. Apparently it was the new up and coming council housing area, two times the size of Easterhouse. I was still in Barlanark with My mum after the funeral. She was getting to that age she needed me more than I needed her and if I went it would break her heart. So I lived with her and we where happy. I know this may seem rude but when dad died it was like mum became this new person. Like a weight had been lifted. The depression lasted a whole four weeks then she said “ what am I doing at this cooker I’m not a ball and chain anymore.” I laughed to lighten the mood. Mum was right she could fulfil her dreams now. They weren’t exciting but she could work now. Dad never let her work “ I’m the bread winner.” He used to shout when she brought it up in discussion. Now my uncle Tam can get her a job cleaning in the school, he was the janitor. They always needed an extra hand at the old primary. My mum aged forty and me aged nineteen lives was finally going in the right direction. The eighties have nearly passed. And the nights are filled with laughter in my house. I have grown up and I know what is wrong and what is right. I didn’t know before but now I do. It was 1989 and I decided to celebrate my 21st birthday in style at a club called McKinley in Shettleston.. I invited Richey I’ve not spoken to him since he got off drugs but his dad told me he was much better and life for him was promising. We left my house and went to the pub before the club to get a round in, as it was my birthday I didn’t pay it was ace. Mum was all chuffed and in her best gear for the night ahead. Everyone had their cameras out for a night to remember. “Richey mate how’s life?” I shouted at the bar when he walked in. “happy 21st man” he replied. It’s not long till Richey turns 21, a couple of months. He looked healthier after a bad turn in the winter the night before. Walking into the club there was balloons and banners all pre set. It was the best’ nothing could ruin this night. The drinks kept flowing and the laughter echoed through the night until about 2 o’clock in the morning. “Mate, mate I know its your day but I have news. You want to come outside for a fag and I’ll tell you,” said Richey. “ Ay mate no worries wait out side I’m just saying bye to my mum she’s heading home.” I replayed. The cold air hit you when you left the club and the streets where filled with siren noises and muffled conversation. We sat and he looked it me with a worried look on his face. I knew this look. I remembered this look. “I saved your life once and you saved my house from burning years ago. We are best mates and nothing ever going to change that. I’m sorry I’ve not been there for you man. I’ve been ill. It wasn’t drugs man I wasn’t on drugs the paleness the injections the staying in the house all the time, my dad said it was drugs but its not. My dad said it was a Poofs illness and I was never supposed to get it. I have aids.” He cried. I never said a word I looked at him. I hugged him. I never knew anyone to get aids before except Freddy Mercury. “So does that mean you’re a gay?” I asked not knowing much about the disease. “ No mate woman carry it to!” he said calmly. “ I wont make my 21st so I’ve been celebrating with you tonight., sorry I didn’t tell you, the chick you seen me with she’s not my girlfriend she’s a nurse. It’s a good distraction thought mate she’s sexy.” I laughed sobbingly and told Richey that his secret was safe with me and we continued to have a blast until 4am. Hangover kicks in and I ask myself if it was a dream, “did Richey actually tell me that stuff last night.” He did I know he did, damn. Months pass and time grows shorter for the lad down the road. Richey moved to a hospice near Airdrie. That’s where he would die. I never visited. I couldn’t. Even the thought of me going there and seeing him in some state killed me inside. A week later I was carrying the coffin of my once best pal. Who saved my life once? He did. I saved his life too. He was there for me; I’ll never forget him never never never……… New year 1990, “a toast to Richey in heaven” I yelled.” to Richey” they all said. My 1980's

2024.05.31 15:31 dBonesLH Spring Sci-Fi Reviews!

Hi Sci-Fi fans! I am back with a few more reviews. I bounce around primarily between SF, horror and Fantasy so if you like those genres you can find some of those reviews on my profile as well. Let’s get to it!

Lowest reviewed to highest.

Devastation of Baal by Guy Haley

Basic Outline- Leviathan has come to Baal! The tyranid swarm is staging a full scale assault on the birthplace of Sanguinius. Can Dante and the Blood Angels save their home?

Thoughts- I have been on a bit of a 40K kick between reading the books, lore and playing Rogue Trader on PS5. Dante (review below) really cemented to me how good a space marine focused 40K book can be if the author manages to tell a human story despite the inhuman personality of many of its characters. Haley doesn’t succeed as well here. The story tries to encompass the entirely of the battle for Baal and its two moons but as a result takes on too many POV’s many of which feel unnecessary and are too infrequent to really become attached to the characters. I honestly feel like if Haley had stuck to maybe three (the water seller and his son, Seth and Dante) the book would have felt more intimate and personal in a similar way to Dante. I had heard the critique that Haley’s depiction of the tyranid perspective was flawed and poorly drawn and I have to agree. It just felt repetitive every time being like it doesn’t care about itself, it is just a blood cell etc. We get it I understand the concept can we move on? The unfortunate thing is I can see the great book that is hiding in here which is demonstrated in the last 25 pages or so once we focus on the climax with Dante and the repercussions following the battle for Baal. Haley is at his best when he focuses on individual character stories and I hope as I continue onto Darkness of the Blood he gets back to it (although I am going to take a little break from 40K novels for a while).

Rating-3/5 stars. Some good moments sprinkled into a story that is too crowded with POV’s which feel unnecessary or repetitive.

Hominids by Robert J. Sawyer

Basic Outline- Ponter Boddit is a Neanderthal physicist who is accidentally transported to our parallel earth. Mary Vaughan is the biologist sent to investigate if he is a hoax or the genuine article. They must reconcile our many cultural and historical differences as well as investigate if they can return Ponter home.

Thoughts- Prior to picking this up for myself I had read a few people’s opinions on the writing of Sawyer and a lot of them were fairly negative. Many harped on his tendencies to over describe situations and unfortunately talk about how this series goes completely off the rails by the end. Obviously, this is the first book so I have not gotten into that and despite worrying about where it might go I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit. I am a sucker for “first contact” books and I think despite this being a parallel worlds first contact instead of an alien contact I think it qualifies. As to Mr. Saywer’s writing style I found it to be guilty of the occasional diversion from what might be considered the main thrust of the story but it gave colour to the world and reminded me of people’s randomly flying associations they make internally he is just putting them onto the page. I enjoyed the characters and as a Canadian found it charming to have the setting be so familiar to me (taking place in Ontario). The world and culture of the Neanderthals was fun to explore and compare even though at times it can be a little too idyllic. There were some elements that were negative from our cultural perspective but on the whole our humans per usual come off looking worse than the neanderthals. Which I don’t actually mind since you know what we do to the world hasn’t been exemplary. There were some aspects of the story which dragged a little (aspects of the trial regarding Ponter’s disappearance) but mostly I flew through it. A couple of moments felt a little farfetched (governments not taking a heavier hand with the area/discovery and scientists overlooking a giant obvious concern for any first contact scenario) but as I said it was an enjoyable read and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes next despite worries about the rest of the trilogy due to readers’ complaints.

Rating-4/5 stars. A great start and an interesting/different take on a first contact story. Good neanderthal world building with Canadian flair.

Dante by Guy Haley
Basic Outline- Chapter Master of one of the greatest Space Marine legions is Dante a mysterious and powerful figure to the Imperium of Man. Before his over millennia long rise to prominence he was just a poor boy scraping to survive on a desert moon. Witness the humble beginnings of a legend and the start of one of his greatest trials.

Thoughts- This book really surprised me. I have now read a handful of 40K novels and while some have been quite enjoyable (the Eisenhorn trilogy) many have been varying degrees of boring bolter porn to downright shoddily written dreck. For a space marine book in particular to humanize their main character in such a successful way was great. Going back and forth between young Luis trying to survive his dream of becoming a Blood Angel (the better half of the book by far) and fifteen hundred year old Dante making decisions which impact billions of lives was a great contrast and really intriguing to span the gap between who he was and who he became. Some of the moments were heartbreaking including a noble sacrifice in the later stages of the book which was quite touching and one moment where you really feel the impact of the length of time upon even these mighty immortal warriors. I think this has set a new standard for me as far as 40K novels go, it had some great action, excellent character exploration and incorporates the amazing setting that is 40K quite well. I am excited to read on into the rest of the omnibus and take on Devastation of Baal.

Rating-4/5 stars. A surprisingly human take on the immortal godlike beings that are the Adeptus Astartes. Maybe not the perfect start to enter this immense world but if you are interested in Space Marines in particular you could do much worse.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin

Basic Outline- Genly Ai travels to the desolate frozen world of Winter to invite the locals to join the rest of the worlds of humanity. However, there are large obstacles to his goal, a growing conflict between the nations on Winter and the cultural and physical differences between the genderless natives and the rest of mankind.

Thoughts- I have to admit that I had lofty expectations for this novel especially after posting my previous review of The Dispossessed and saying I enjoyed it immensely to which several people commented that this book was even better. As I started this smaller book (approximately 300 pages) after about a third I was if not struggling starting to wonder when the greatness would occur. I did not have as much of an attachment to Genly in the same way as Shevek from The Dispossessed as he seemed even more naïve and coarse when he should be coming at least as a trained ambassador even if he had never actually done one of these missions before. The book picked up in the next hundred pages once the POV of Estraven is introduced (the Prime Minister of one of the nations on Winter) but by then I was thinking how is Le Guin going to wrap this up in a satisfying way with only one hundred pages left? And with the last hundred I go goddamn Le Guin you did it again! I was invested, emotional and happy with where we ended. This book was obviously hugely influential in dealing with gender roles, sexuality and critiquing our own relationships between men and women and this was all in the sixties long before such conversations were commonplace. It very much took too long from my perspective to get going both from a story perspective and from a thematic perspective (the real conversations about gender and Earth’s backward way of thinking of them really don’t take off until the last hundred pages) which is my biggest problem with this novel. Perhaps for others this is fine but I felt for me The Dispossessed was paced better. The last third of this novel is excellent combining the best of adventure, survival and emotional storytelling. I just sort of wish this was parceled out a little more throughout the narrative. Le Guin is clearly a master and now after reading two of her seminal novels I am eager to continue to read her bibliography.

Rating-4/5 stars. Le Guin continues to reinforce her reputation as truly one of the Sci-Fi greats. It meanders a bit too much for the first two thirds before delivering a fantastic ending.
The Martian by Andy Weir
Basic Outline- Mark Watney is left stranded on Mars after a catastrophic storm on the surface. What follows is a desperate struggle for survival with all the elements of Robinson Crusoe but you know on Mars with a wise ass.

Thoughts- This book breached what I would consider the “normie” or casual reader sphere when it was released in 2011. Even during that time frame when I wasn’t reading much fiction, I heard of it and wanted to pick it up before seeing the Ridley Scott film. That didn’t happen and I ended up loving the movie and it became in my opinion, one of Scott’s best films. I am here to reinforce the thoughts of many people and say the book is just as good (barring one element I will get to later). Weir writes such likable and relatable characters especially Watney who is endearing and hilarious throughout the book with his gallows humour. You really root for him because he does the work, he keeps it light even in the darkest moments and is constantly tested. The tertiary characters are well drawn and feel real from the exhausted Bruce to the cantankerous Mitch or devasted commander Lewis. I have seen the film a dozen times and even while reading I was getting chills and was worried for Watney as he makes his journey and goes through roadblock after roadblock. That is writing that should be lauded when I am barreling through the book, hanging on every word and I know the outcome. There are some elements that differ from the film, I particularly enjoyed an extremely dark conversation concerning Johanssen which was in the book and missing from the film which was blackly hilarious. Also some parts of Watney’s final trip to the Ares 4 site was cut from the movie and was a nice little final F U to watch him try and solve even more problems. I will say and many people have mentioned it elsewhere the book does sort of just end, whereas Scott’s excellent adaption gives a more proper and satisfying conclusion.

Rating-4.5/5 stars. I was shocked that I enjoyed this book as much as I did considering I have watched the film so much and it was adapted fairly closely. Excellent character work and suspenseful writing make this one of the best survival stories I have ever read.

2024.05.31 07:24 EarthInternational9 Sounds like they celebrate car showed up at wrong address, instead of mine.

AI of a prototype self driving car used human brain of children? That's Doctor Frankenstein level of unethical. Did that really happen? Why isn't it in the news? Sounds like AI is getting fooled by MM right now. Is that really happening or just nightmare? MM lives at house behind me, but far too close because it's possible to go over fence. That was why I wanted gun finally with mentally ill son living elsewhere. I saw man who looked like RPM walk to that house, but he was told that he couldn't speak to me? Now they are shipping the deceased to India because they believe that the mother lives there right now.
Because of the owner of brain prototype doesn't like me, they brag that I never work again. So that explains all the extra bad in my life since Feb 28, 2011. One continuous crime? One continuous illegal experiment? Slavery included because Jax was involved. They brag that my kids aren't allowed to see me again because I belong to MM so have no more civil rights because of the very bad 7 mos marriage to his friend DEK. They EXPECT my silence but didn't invite me to the "basketball awards" to discuss anything. But they tell people that I was there, imposter accepted as me, they claim that I wanted to be a crazy slave and they were given rights and permission to exploit me in every way that cannot be altered or contested in court.
They are changing my identity overnight they brag, because I made "MM abuse me" instead of just having sex for money because he said I did that! They believe that if you sin, you can't stop because they don't think Christ saves. They brag about the deal of suicide pacts they made with children who were wrong to trust them. They are wrong, but they wanted my kids to die. They wanted me to commit suicide, so they never said they were sorry for anything they ACTUALLY did. They brag about drug dealers coalition never planning on treating my kids fairly because assumed autism is caused by drugs. They brag because they don't treat children of other people fair. They brag they tricked my kid into suicide so abandon me here.
Zelle account is set up with email on my resume BUT it goes to wrong bank account. Emails exchanged to/from customer service today because headaches kept me away from desk. Email notifications noticed on my phone, but email missing. Family calls me retarded because I don't think it's easy to have sex for money in my 40's or 50's after they sold me to white guy. Except for my mom, but it's been days and she hasn't been allowed to call me back? Or whoever is home, won't call me back despite my number being there to not be guilty?
They brag about plans to get Baker Act on me, with hacker making phone calls with router offline, so I can't get a gun. Unfortunately in Jax, not all disabled people are "allowed" to work meaningful jobs like I saw other places that I grew up. Back to RPM's visit, they explained to him that I was arguing with boyfriend because most of them can argue on phone with MM. I don't have phone number and we haven't talked since 1990. They pretend that I gave him permission to use surgically removed egg. They heard Gayatri mantra and decided it meant "poor", not wealthy. They expect me to kill myself so they get away with multiple murders, including mine!
They brag they changed Feb police report to claim that I died at scene of accident to make me illegal alien so dependent on doing illegal stuff to survive in Jax because drug dealers have more power than anyone!
Yes, they brag that Hispanic neighbors convinced title company to let them have my house for some insane reason. Don't use title companies or mortgage companies that help fraud or corruption!
They brag that they are so good at scam to convince people that I bought a wealth djinn because I wanted to be poor and preyed on by men. They don't see any other way that I could live except for hand-outs because they think black women can't work without permission in Jax! They brag because they don't think God exists since they got to use a time machine. They are full of pride because they stole from locked rooms enough for identity fraud to succeed. Wickedness.

2024.05.29 14:18 BioWrestling Fantasy Booking Edge vs. Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII (27) (Part 3/3)

Fantasy Booking Edge vs. Christian at WrestleMania XXVII (27):
SmackDown (Feb. 4 - Feb. 18, 2011)
Edge comes to the ring and says he saw every second of Christian’s title reign. Every promo, every defence, and every letter addressed right to him and his hospital bed. Edge says he thought the day Christian was world champion, he’d enjoy every moment of it. However, every second that went by, ever promo, defence and ‘letter’ made Edge more and more furious. Edge would sometimes mute the TV at the hospital and pretended his friend had gotten over his insecurities and the demons in his head and had won the world championship on his own terms. But, that wasn’t the case. Instead, Christian had let his demons beat him and write the narrative of his career and now, Edge has to destroy Christian and the monster he has become. That’s why Edge did what he did at the Royal Rumble, because the only man who is taking the World Heavyweight Championship from Christian, is Edge. When Edge takes that title Christian will realise he didn’t have to be second place to Edge, but because of his own decisions, Christian will live as second best, and the man Edge took the World Heavyweight Championship from.
In the lead up to the Elimination Chamber Match, a Chamber Match for the right to face Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII is set up. The first five participants are Edge, Kane, Rey Mysterio, Brodus Clay and Kofi Kingston.
As all five men stand in the ring speaking back-and-forth, a brawl breaks out. The brawl ends as Kane turns around into a Spear from Edge. As the Rated R Superstar stands tall, the lights go out and a familiar Gong hits. The lights come back on revealing The Undertaker behind Edge. Undertaker grabs Edge by the throat and nails him with a Chokeslam before picking him up and nailing Edge with a Tombstone Piledriver. Undertaker motions that he wants the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII, confirming himself as the sixth man in the Elimination Chamber.
Edge vs. Undertaker vs. Kane vs. Rey Mysterio vs. Brodus Clay vs. Kofi Kingston - #1 Contender’s Elimination Chamber Match - Elimination Chamber (Feb. 20, 2011)
Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston start the match off hot, followed by Brodus Clay and Kane who enter next, with Kane eliminating Rey Mysterio and Brodus Clay eliminating Kofi Kingston shortly after. Edge enters the match next and battles it out with the two big men as the match devolves into a triple threat. Soon after, Undertaker enters last and cleans house. Kane stands up to his brother as the two reignite their rivalry. Upon downing Kane, Kane and Brodus Clay decide to team up despite having battled back-and-forth the entire match, in the interest of taking out The Undertaker. The two men gang up on Undertaker, getting the better of him. However, as the two men have Undertaker where they want him, Brodus Clay is Speared by Edge and pinned, being eliminated. This allows Undertaker to recover and get the better of Kane, hitting him with a Tombstone Piledriver and eliminating him. Edge and Undertaker collect themselves and face off, reigniting their rivalry one last time. The two men battle back and forth tirelessly, the two men prove to be inseparable as both men take each other out at the same time. As both men lay lifeless on the mat, Brodus Clay, who is still knocked out from the Spear he suffered, is finally dragged out the door. However, before the referees can close the door, Brodus holds it. The referees try to snatch it from him but Brodus doesn’t allow it. Just then, Christian runs down with the World Heavyweight Championship past the referees and enters the Chamber. Christian holds up the World Heavyweight Championship towards Edge and begs him to get up. As Edge gets to his feet, a similar scene as the Royal Rumble takes place as Christian charges at Edge, before changing direction, and smashing Undertaker in the face with the title. Christian laughs and exits the chamber as referees and Teddy Long who has made his way down, demand he exit the Chamber. Edge looks down at Undertaker, and looks at Christian on the ramp. Edge decides his hatred and desire to face Christian justifies taking advantage of the interference, before capitalising. Edge waits for Undertaker to get back to his feet before Spearing Undertaker, covering the Deadman, and winning the Elimination Chamber Match, earning himself a match with Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. Edge and Christian stare each other down from the ring and the stage respectively, with the tensions high and the match to end it all set for WrestleMania.
Winner: Edge
SmackDown (Feb 25 - Apr. 1, 2011)
Edge comes to the ring and says at WrestleMania, this is it. Edge finally gets revenge for the attack that almost ended his career, the cash-in in front of both men’s mothers that traumatised both of them and tore apart a bond that had lasted 30 years. Edge finally gets Christian in the ring where he will exercise the demons that have haunted Christian’s entire life but now that the demons have consumed Christian and he has become one with them, he will have to destroy Christian along with them. Christian comes out with Brodus Clay and confronts Edge. Christian says this is the way it was always supposed to be. And despite Edge’s manipulation over the years, Christian still managed to break out and become World Heavyweight Champion. However, Edge is still trying to manipulate Christian saying him being his own man are because of his ‘demons’. Christian tells Edge the 30 years of manipulation are over and Edge needs to pull his head out his a** and realise it. Christian has always been better than Edge and Christian has proved the world wrong and at WrestleMania XXVII, he will prove the entire world wrong once and for all.
After a victory for Christian on SmackDown, Edge appears through the crowd, taking out Brodus Clay with a steel chair. By the time Christian realises, Edge is already in the ring behind him, steel chair in hand. Edge destroys Christian with the steel chair before cutting him in half with a Spear. Edge gets onto his knees and clutches Christian’s head in his arms as Christian lays lifeless on the mat. Edge tells Christian while Edge was in hospital and Christian was sending him all those ‘letters’, Edge was sitting in his hospital bed, writing his own. Edge begins reading them. “Dear Christian, thank you for writing me,” the letter goes on as a usual letter would, detailing how when Edge comes back he’s going to make Christian pay. Edge ends the letter saying, “I can’t wait to rip your head off. Edge”. Edge reads the next letter, starting the same with “Dear Christian, thank you for writing me,” and ending the same with “I can’t wait to rip your head off. Edge”, with a different yet similar message in the middle. As Edge continues reading the letters throughout the months, they all have the same beginning and end with a similar middle. However, the letters become shorter and shorter in the middle, as the messages become more deranged. The camera catches the writing becoming bigger and messier. The middles of the messages continue becoming shorter and shorter until they completely disappear. With only the beginning of “Dear Christian, thank you for writing me,” and the ending of “I can’t wait to rip your head off. Edge” remaining. As the writing becomes bigger and messier than ever, the beginning of the letter disappears as Edge’s descent into madness leaves the final messages with just the ending reading “I CAN’T WAIT TO RIP YOU HEAD OFF” in huge capitals as Edge reads letter after letter saying the same thing as his voice gets louder and louder as he throws the pages away. Edge, now screaming, explains that he went insane watching Christian torture his friends, destroy their friendship and torment him. And now at WrestleMania, Edge is going to RIP CHRISTIAN’S HEAD OFF! Edge picks up Christian and nails him with a Spear before holding the World Heavyweight Championship over his head.
Christian reveals he wants a regular singles match for WrestleMania XXVII, wanting a traditional match where both men can finally prove who the better wrestler is. However, Edge wants Christian in a stipulation where he can torture him, Edge wants Christian in his wheelhouse, Edge wants Christian in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match. To decide this, a match between Edge and Brodus Clay is made where if Edge wins, the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania will be a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match. But, if Brodus wins, the match will be a traditional singles match.
Edge vs. Brodus Clay - SmackDown (Apr. 1, 2011)
Edge wrestles with a new level of insanity in his eyes. The retro signature wide-eyes and fingers running through hair are all more heightened than ever before. Edge uses his crazed intensity and grit to fight back against the dominant monster and takes over the match. Edge has Brodus ready for a Spear and charges at Brodus until Christian runs in-between the men with a steel chair in hand. As Christian goes to swing at Edge, he turns and smashes Brodus over the head with the steel chair. Edge is confused as ring announcer Tony Chimel declares the winner by disqualification being Brodus Clay and the stipulation at WrestleMania XXVII being a traditional singles match. Christian attempts to flee the ring as Edge realises but is caught by Edge at the last moment. Edge beats the hell out of Christian until he is attacked from behind by Brodus with the steel chair. Once Christian has recovered and the two men have beaten Edge into a lifeless heap, Christian kneels with Edge’s head on his knees this time, and pulls a letter out his tights, and begins to read it. “Dear Edge, after all these months, this is my final letter.” The letter details how Edge coming back after the injury Christian gave him was the gravest mistake he ever made because now at WrestleMania XXVII, Christian has no choice but to end Edge’s career. Christian ends the letter the same as Edge did, only with one small grammatical difference, saying, “I can’t wait to rip your head off Edge”. Christian folds up the letter and lays it on Edge’s chest, before giving Edge one final kiss on the forehead. Christian holds the World Heavyweight Championship above his head as he and Brodus stand tall over Edge heading into WrestleMania.
Winner: Brodus Clay
Christian © vs. Edge - World Heavyweight Championship - WrestleMania XXVII (Apr. 3, 2011)
As Edge waits in the ring, the champion makes his entrance with Brodus Clay. However, as both men stand on the stage, Christian sends Brodus to the back, wanting to prove who is the better man one on one. As the bout begins, Edge invites Christian into the middle of the ring to wrestle. Christian wanted to prove who the better wrestler is, so let’s see. The two partake in multiple chain wrestling exchanges, with Edge coming out on top almost every time. As Christian grows increasingly frustrated, he strikes Edge with a clothesline as both men are ready to lock up, causing the match to evolve into striking and big moves. As the match goes on, Christian has Edge in position for a Killswitch when Edge pushes Christian off into the ropes who bounces off into a Spear. Edge goes for the cover and gets the 1, 2… Christian kicks out. Edge is clearly surprised by the kick out, not having recognised Christian’s improvement over the course of his World Heavyweight Championship reign. As the match continues Edge charges at Christian going for a Spear but is caught and spun around into a Killswitch which Christian gets this time. Christian gets the 1, 2… but this time Edge kicks out. As Edge recovers, Christian goes for a Disaster Kick only to be caught in mid-air with a Spear. A tired Edge slowly crawls to the cover and gets the 1, 2… the referee is pulled out the ring. Edge looks up to the see Brodus Clay who had ran down during Edge’s extended crawl to the pinfall. Brodus hops into the ring and stares down with Edge who attacks Brodus as the two men begin to brawl. Brodus lays out the more tired Edge with a Powerslam and prepares for a Fall of Humanity. Brodus leaps off the middle rope but misses Edge who rolls out the way at the last moment. Edge recovers and Spears Brodus before turning around into a Disaster Kick from Christian. With the referee still down, Christian exits the ring, grabs his World Heavyweight Championship and re-enters the ring, ready to smash Edge in the face with it, having maybe himself given up on beating Edge clean, and maybe having given up on the idea he is better than Edge. As Edge recovers, Christian charges at Edge with the title only for Edge to nail Christian with a Spear. Edge slowly crawls over and drapes an arm over Christian as the referee recovers and slowly counts the 1, 2… and 3. Edge celebrates having won back his World Heavyweight Championship and having gotten revenge for the sins of Christian over the past year. As Edge stands in the ring with his World Heavyweight Championship, he looks outside to see Christian staring back at him whilst sitting on the outside of the ring in defeat. Edge stares and gives a slight nod of the head to Christian, acknowledging that there still is and may always be bad blood there, but there is a new found respect for Christian as a main event competitor.
Winner: Edge

International Super Collider Celebrates 12th Anniversary

Unparalleled Journalism Since 1894
Since the creation of CERN 118 years ago, Switzerland has been considered the nexus of all international civil research. Even as the rules-based international order of the old fell over 50 years, Switzerland continued to be known as a haven for international science, regularly hosting academics and researchers from across the world. As the world rapidly changed and evolved, Switzerland persisted in its efforts to promote a rekindling of formal international science, leading to the Bern Conference on International Science in 2049, leading to the establishment of the International Research Organization (IRO) and the opening of the International Super Collider in 2061. Despite some hiccups and an international incident (SEE: Unraveling the Plan to Hack the ICS, Nine Years On), the International Super Collider has led the way in re-establishing international cooperation in particle physics, and more broadly rekindling the international spirit to advance science as a whole.
To celebrate the twelfth anniversary of the International Super Collider, officially opened on 2 January 2061, the Federal Council partnered with the IRO and Swiss University Conference to celebrate international science by declaring January 2073 as the Month of Curiosity. Highlighting the month is the Curiosity Exhibition, which is a display of the Curiosity Rover, recently bought and brought back to Earth by the IRO, and detailing humanity’s expansion through space since the 2010s. Despite the recent global political instability, reminiscent of the 2020s, all Member States of the IRO were invited to exhibit and take part in the Parade of Science occurring later in the month.
There has been speculation in academic circles and scientific publications (SEE: International Research Organization Hints at Orbital Mars Materials Lab in Science Magazine) about the IRO using the opportunity to get popular support and funding commitments from Member States for their next generation of international scientific projects, though the IRO declined to comment when asked about such speculation.

Cracking Open the “Hermit” of Europe

A Look at Europe’s Quietest Country

National Terrestrial Solar Science Lifestyle Opinion

Posted on December 19 2072 by Helen Aeschbacher, PhD - Opinion
Liberty for Posterity
In its hundreds of years of history, Switzerland has been variously deemed, by nations that have since been confined to history, an unnatural blot on Europe, a “mongrel” nation, or archaic hermit holding onto the ideas of old. Though Switzerland has been popularly known as the “Hermit of Europe'' due to its nearly three centuries of neutrality and non-interference in global affairs, it did not stay free in the age of hyperstates with hyperauthoritarianism by resting on its laurels. Even as time marched forward and the world left democracy & human rights behind, Switzerland remained true to its identity, being deemed the most free and wealthiest nation on Earth for over fifty years straight. This has led many would-be conquerors, political scientists, and even Swiss citizens themselves to ask a simple question, how has Switzerland been able to stay a beacon of stability and freedom in a world so dominated by turmoil?
If you ask the Swiss themselves, you would get a myriad of opinions all as unique as the Swiss nation itself. Some credit the strict border controls and tough immigration process, while others point to the ability of Switzerland to maintain diplomatic relations and neutral mediation for other countries. Most answers would also involve mention of Switzerland’s financial sector and robust high-tech sector, which have seen Swiss based firms and funds having interests across the Solar System and being the place to park one’s wealth or investments, as well as its reputation as one of the most defensible nations on Earth. While all likely play a part, I would posit that the most determining factor for Switzerland has been its reputation for stability. In a world where Japan controls more land than the British Empire did at its prime and nations are regularly overthrown in grand revolutions with esoteric ideologies, Switzerland has stayed as just Switzerland. Its borders have stayed the same for over two centuries and the substance of its government has stayed the same since the 1870s. When tourists are approved to visit, they see an idyllic nation that harkens back to the stability of yesteryear, not a twisted creation that belongs in the sci-fi of the 1900s as the destinations they come from appear.
In my latest book, A Look at the Shaded Kōi: Isolationism With Japanese Characteristics I delve even deeper into this idea, talking to Japanese citizens about their view of the world. Their views on Switzerland encapsulates this idea, with Switzerland being one of the most favorable foreign countries, while being perceived as the least likely of all nations to interfere with Japanese security. Political research in other states have seen similar views of Switzerland, with Switzerland’s only significant low point being its treatment of androids. Of course, if you ask the Swiss themselves, this is seen as a point of pride, with the country having voted to ban all physically autonomous intelligences in the 2050s, with only foreign diplomatic staff and specially approved machines being allowed in Switzerland’s borders.
This stability and wealth have come with concerns, however, as polls of the Swiss population suggest a near universal anxiety about possible violations of Swiss neutrality and the ongoing turmoil across the world. This reflects in recent Swiss referendums and elections, with all major Swiss parties committed to continuing the modernization and expansion of the National Redoubt and the Swiss people authorizing the creation of an underground bunker complex capable of housing the entire Swiss population. Yet these anxieties being immediately addressed and the people being in control of how they respond to the world around them are perhaps further proof of Switzerland’s stability and freedom. What most other nations have cast off as a liability continues to be the energy that sustains the Swiss nation and ensures its freedom for perpetuity.

Government

Switzerland is a confederation of 26 Cantons that are united under the 2000 Constitution. The legislature is called the Federal Assembly, with citizens directly electing members to both houses of the Federal Assembly, the lower house being the National Council and the upper house being the Council of States. Citizens also have the right to amend the constitution in national popular referendums via the Popular Initiative. The Cantons also have their own democratic governments, all slightly different from one another.

Switzerland has no singular head of state or head of government, instead the Federal Assembly appoints seven Swiss citizens to four year renewable terms to the Federal Council, where all seven Councilors act collectively as the head of state and head of government. Though not a formal member of the Federal Council, the Federal Assembly also elects a Federal Chancellor to act as the general staff for the Federal Council. This Federal Chancellor is often considered an unofficial eighth member of the Federal Council. The Federal Assembly also elects a Federal President yearly to chair Federal Council sessions, but they have no additional powers and are seen as a first among equals. Since the 1950s, the Federal Council has effectively been a grand coalition of all major parties in Switzerland, with the number of Councilors given to political parties shifting depending on the result of Federal Assembly elections.

Economy

The Swiss economy is, per capita, the richest on Earth, with the GDPPC of Switzerland in 2073 listed as $282,953.62. Switzerland ranks as one of the top innovative and productive economies on Earth, despite its low key approach to global economics. This has allowed it to maintain its place as one of the most advanced producers of pharmaceuticals, robots/androids (largely for export, given domestic restrictions), and luxury goods in existence. Despite its manufacturing sector’s prowess, most of Switzerland’s economic success is derived from its banking and investment sector, with nearly two-thirds of the world’s offshore funds being held in Switzerland. This wealth, in addition to the nation’s political stability, has allowed Switzerland (or rather its financial sector) to continue to control large amounts of the commodities market, have one the largest foreign currency holdings on Earth, and maintain large investments in the UNSC and Japan.

Though strong in its terrestrial holdings, Switzerland has come to rely heavily on the UNSC and Japan for its space-based investments. The necessity of using foreign space elevators, targeting investments at foreign firms focusing on space resource extraction, and a general Swiss preference to remain firmly in Switzerland have resulted in the domestic space industry in Switzerland being focused mostly on commodities trading and IPE-related services. The Swiss-based space-focused companies that do exist are largely subsidiaries of longstanding Swiss firms, with Nestlé being the largest Swiss business with significant assets in space.

2024.05.27 20:32 58mm-Invicta_rizz (#37) Showing Drum Corps to a friend, need show suggestions.

Hey all,
So, I’m inviting over a friend at my place with the express intent of showing him drum corps videos and I was wondering if I could get some recommendations or suggestions of shows I could show him. He’s a complete newbie to the activity and is a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers (I don’t know if that’s relevant, but I’m hoping it might help). Currently my list is:
In order: 1. Phantom Regiment 2008 Spartacus 2. Bluecoats 2014 Tilt 3. The Cavaliers 2002 Frameworks 4. Santa Clara Vanguard 2018 Babylon 5. Bluecoats 2019 Beatles 6. Carolina Crown 2011 Rach Star
Unordered: •Mandarins 2023 Sinnerman •Boston Crusaders 2023 White Whale •Blue Devils 2017 Metamorph •Carolina Crown 2013 e=mc2 •Bluecoats 2016 Down Side Up •Carolina Crown 2015 Inferno •Bluecoats 2022 Riffs and Revelations •Bluecoats 2023 The Garden of Love •The Troopers 2022 Voracious •The Troopers 2023 To Lasso the Sun •Suncoast Sound 1984 •Suncoast Sound 1986 Adventures in Time
I’m considering Madison 1995, Phantom Regiment 1996 & 2010, Velvet Knight 1992 and the Cadets 2011, but I’d like to hear feedback on those.
I don’t think he’d appreciate Star of Indiana 1991 and 1993 though.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks drumcorps!
Update: So my friend came around and we watched a couple of shows and he enjoyed it a lot. We didn’t get to go through the whole list, but I’ve already come up with an excuse for him to visit again, so we’ll go through the rest of the list. Thanks again drumcorps!
