2024.06.01 12:09 creeperwizardZ Recommend me lgbtq books like gideon the ninth and the priory of the orange tree

Hello, as the title says, i found these two books interesting and match what i would usually want to read but at the same time i found these books to have way too rich and complex vocabulary, and as English isn't my first language i find reading them quite exhausting having to constantly check the definition of each word I don't understand, it would be great if you could recommend me a book similar to them, tnx

2024.06.01 11:34 worklifeballoons iPadOS and neurodivergence.

People like to dunk on iPadOS for its oversimplification that is holding the devices back from being closer to a full-fledged computer in a traditional sense. As a reflex we are like "just put macOS on it already". And, yes, I too would love to see more software flexibility on the platform.

But the distinct, low multitasking UI paradigm of iPadOS has a value I don't see many people talking about. It gives people a way of computer interaction that is more focused on specific tasks or contents. And this is not only beneficial, but has become anectotally essential for me as a person with ADHD.

I use a macOS machine for intense deep specialized multitasking work. I always go back to iPadOS for anything related to focus. Writing a long e-mail, planning out projects, research, reading, sketching out ideas, communicating. All these things require much effort for ADHD brains. iPadOS happens to help a lot with focusing because of its limitations, not despite. It forces me to spread my valuably small attention span across lesser things.

Another way of thinking about it: macOS or any other desktop OS is more like this diverse, sometimes untidy workshop with lots of specialized tools, work benches, power tools and sheer space to get chaotic when the creative process requires it. iPadOS is the quiet headspace, the sketch book, the low-stimulus silent room, where you can go for think work. It's like two different cognitive rooms or ways of thinking. Apple's classic "think different" comes to mind.

Whatever Apple does with the gap between macOS and iPadOS, I hope that we can continue to benefit from what I call focus computing as opposed to scattered computing.

Any ND folks having similar thoughts?

Together We Can: Joining Hands for Education Equality with Pehchaan The Street School
"Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships."
– Michael Jordan.
JOIN HANDS symbolizes ‘to work together in an enterprise or a task.’ We can accomplish great things if we all join hands and work together.
You must have heard of the Elephant and the Monkey story. If not? Here is the story. In a forest, lived one elephant and a monkey who were too highbrow on their qualities and would often quarrel about who had superior qualities. So, one day an owl thought to teach them a lesson about the importance of collaboration and teamwork and had an idea to initiate a competition, and whoever wins would be considered superior and more powerful. The challenge was to get a golden fruit from an old tree present in the forest behind.
To reach the forest behind, both of them had to cross the river. But the monkey swept away along with the high current and after that, the elephant asked the monkey to ascend on his back, and then they successfully crossed the river. The challenge was still not completed. The elephant attempted to descend the tree but the tree was so strong and didn't shake so the monkey decided to climb up the tree and pluck the fruit.
When they came back and the owl was going to declare the winner, both of them first stopped the owl from declaring the winner and then expressed their gratitude towards each other and stated that they were able to do so because of their joint efforts.
The moral of the story has been stated as follows:
  • No one is superior to anyone, individually one is not effective. However, collectively as a team, we can achieve the impossible. All because you used unity at the right time to do the right thing.
  • Teamwork is the backbone of collaboration and effective communication within an organization. It increases efficiency and productivity.
  • Collaborative problem-solving leads to better outcomes.
  • As everyone knows, the work done by a team is always done at a much better pace, with high accuracy and precision when compared to the work of an individual. It always has a large impact on a huge amount of people.
  • Teamwork gives opportunities for growth, lowers the risk of burnout, yields fewer mistakes, and sparks creativity.
  • Working in a team encourages personal growth, addresses a large number of people, and reduces stress.
  • It leads to enhanced creativity and improved quality of work.
  • It improves organizational culture, and brainstorming and encourages a common goal.
  • Teamwork skills are essential for the academic and professional success of an individual.
Also, I would like to focus on the concept and the importance of education:
Education can be defined as the training of people, and the transmission of skills, knowledge, and character traits, and manifests in various forms. Formal education occurs within a structured institutional framework, such as private and public schools, following a curriculum.
  • It helps you improve your career and personal growth.
  • It contributes to human development and helps you make the right decisions in life.
  • It increases the chance of employment and also helps in the creation of an identity of a self.
  • Education provides stability in life, and it's something that no one can ever take away from you. By being well-educated and holding a college degree, you increase your chances for better career opportunities and open up new doors for yourself
  • It helps to reduce inequalities and reach gender equality.
  • It leads to innovations and discoveries.
  • It helps in the character and moral development of an individual.
  • Education helps a person to get knowledge and improve confidence in life.
  • It teaches lessons of gratitude and humanity.
  • Learning changes your thinking capabilities and perceptions.
Similarly, Pehchaan The Street School is not an individual entity. It has a group of volunteers whose motive is to help each underprivileged child create a PEHCHAAN (‘identity’) for themselves. In 2015, it consisted only of 5 volunteers, with an increase in time, Pehchaan The Street School consisted of 500+ volunteers along with interns and other community members.
Mr. Aakash Tandon along with his friends started it. Pehchaan The Street School aims to provide quality and free education to every underprivileged child. From elementary education to vocational studies, they have emphasized the value of education as a fundamental right. The motive is to make education accessible to every child with a desire to learn. The institutionalization and commodification of education across our country have severely restricted the ability of the underprivileged to access means of vocational as well as academic studies, and that’s the barrier that we aim to break with Pehchaan The Street School.
At Pehchaan The Street School, where the holistic approach to education dominates, we are venturing beyond just academics to break off from the conventional. They recognize multi-dimensional issues faced by underprivileged children and offer integrated interventions. They also provide free health checkups, skill enhancement courses, workshops on the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation, mental health treatment, financial support, and legal aid.
Various initiatives taken by Pehchaan The Street School for the rights to equality, freedom, and education for each underprivileged child are mentioned as follows:
  • Quality Education
It is provided by setting up informal schooling spaces in inaccessible locations; the initiatives break down barriers that typically prevent these children from accessing formal education systems.
Education completely changes the way how an individual thinks and takes action in their life.
  • Creation of a supportive environment
Pehchaan The Street School consists of parents, local communities, interns, volunteers, and various community members in the educational process fostering a supportive environment for all the children to learn efficiently.
  • Personal Hygiene and sanitation camps
Various camps are organized to provide information about hygiene and measures to maintain it. Hygiene camps conduct interactive sessions on handwashing, dental care, and personal hygiene, instilling habits that serve as the first line of defense against infections and diseases.
  • Financial Support
Financial aid is provided to underprivileged children through donations in various forms such as uniforms, books, shoes, cash, adoption of a child’s education, etc.
  • Menstrual education
Various sessions are conducted by Pehchaan The Street School to spread awareness and information about menstrual cramps, menstruation, and other factors related to it.
  • Gender Equality
Gender equality is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviors, aspirations, and needs equally, regardless of gender. Pehchaan The Street School also conducts sessions on social norms and etiquette, basic salutations, and educates children on how to treat others, etc.
  • Reduced Inequality
It stands for recognizing the unique challenges faced by different groups and implementing measures to overcome barriers, promote equal rights, and foster inclusive societies where everyone can thrive.
  • Free health checkups
Monthly free health checkups take place under the supervision of Pehchaan The Street School for each underprivileged child and woman.
  • Mental health treatments
Counseling, peer support, medication, psychological therapies, and brain stimulation therapies are conducted to keep the stress level low and are used to provide education about mental health.
Overall, Pehchaan The Street School focuses on the academic and holistic development of each underprivileged child as well as woman.

2024.06.01 07:51 trmdyl Same words constantly stacking vertically

So I don't know if this is related to synchronocity but I definitely get that vibe from this all the time and it happens to me constantly.
So a lot of times when I want to write something like a short story or take notes from something or whatever in a notebook or in a text app on pc or phone, a word (an actual unique word e.g. continue, empire, personality, treasure etc. as well as grammatical ones like about, they, so, who, what, etc. which are a bit less weird I suppose) starts stacking vertically on top of itself line after line and sometimes for an entire page.
I have wondered if this is just because of me using repetitive vocabulary but it still happens when I'm directly taking notes from a book or another article for example so I know it's not really related to my diversity in vocabulary.
I'm not sure if this is just some bizarre and random coincidence or what but it absolutely weirds me out as it happens to me a lot.
Should I chalk this up to some repeating coincidence or something else? I searched around and there is this technical typography term called "Rivers" which points to the stacking of white spaces in a page that creates a river-like pattern in a page but have not found anything similar related to same words stacking repeatedly in a page.
Anyways, thanks for reading and I really am looking forward to know what your guys thoughts are on this peculiarity?

2024.06.01 06:49 Party_Turnover6076 My take on Duolingo for learning French (After a year)

A couple years ago, I decided I was bored of gaming and social media - so I downloaded Duolingo and randomly picked French. The first year, it was mainly a time waster. I wasn't consistent nor did I take anything seriously. Now, after a year of consistent use - here's my "review" on using Duolingo for learning French.
Quick notes to fill in the story a bit more. Once I decided to study French as a serious topic - I found many things in French. I found articles, listened to music and podcasts, word searches and word finds, played games, read books, also had a couple conversations in French, and watched YouTube (Also, these WEREN'T designed for learners of the language - rather content created for native speakers. While it was frustrating - I do think it helped progress me quicker). I also was able to find someone who was willing to help me learn.
So, with all that said - here's what I have to say about Duolingo. I'm now on unit 5 - but it was a lot of skipping. Because of all my other sources I was using to study, I learned quite a lot just from exposure and so I'd take their leveling test every month or so. I used Duolingo on a daily basis and found it a solid platform for vocabulary. In the beginning - it was a great foundation. It explained the basic concepts quite well and was, for the most part, easy to follow. I didn't use any backup research except a couple times - and was understanding concepts for the majority of the time. After a couple months - things got more complex. While I continued to skip around in units {Skipped around units twice - that was it}, I found new concepts introduced that weren't well explained. They'd have a sentence and a couple examples to explain something that felt much more complex. Duolingo also missed quite a lot of regularly used vocabulary - or it was taught in later courses. Words like "sais" were common in reading or speaking French - but weren't covered in Duolingo until MUCH later (chapter 3 or 4 I think). There was also quite a few times where they'd place words that they never taught into a sentence and prioritized words you had gone over. This lead to a ton of confusion. More and more I'd find myself looking up words or relying on information found on other sites or other sources to back what they were trying to teach me up. A big problem, especially now with Duolingo, is being that they're using AI - and even before using AI - they use presets of words - and while this isn't much of the case on the desktop version - it doesn't help you remember words. I found myself sticking to several rules I saw like the idea there's always 4 words remaining after crafting a sentence correctly. There's also the added issue of the correction just being wrong at times. Or sometimes it would catch words I got in the wrong "placement". So the sentence was "Do you prefer curly or straight hair?" and I put "Do you prefer straight or curly hair" and it was marked as wrong. Technically my sentence was correct - but it was wrong because it didn't directly mirror the French translation.
Here's what I'll say to round off my statement.
There's no "one size fits all" program. I think Duolingo is incredible for the beginning. Especially if you're just wanting to play around in the language. I think Duolingo isn't great for explaining grammar or even sparking your mind to actively recall things. I think it's great for keeping a record of how long you've been at it - and how dedicated you are - but isn't something I'd say is the best thing for learning the language. I think it's best for someone to spend the beginning of their journey on Duolingo - but quickly (if you're taking it seriously) move to other sources. I think the biggest thing that has helped and in general makes sense to help others is to expose yourself to it. We didn't learn our mother tongue by reading text books and filling in "fill in the blanks" sheets. We learned it from observing and trying. I'm nowhere close to being able to form the perfect sentence nor can I always translate something perfectly - but I have made a ton of progress. It's only been possible as I've turned almost everything in my life to French. French learning doesn't have to be done with expensive apps and prepaid plans. Find ways to incorporate French into your life. What do you enjoy doing? What do you consume? Great, now find that all in French. Do you like to read? Read news articles in French (or books, but news articles are easier to find and more than often free). Do you like to do yoga? Find yoga videos in French to follow along with. Do you like word searches? Find it in French. There's so much more that you can do than an app or two. YouTube (and most apps in general) are great resources for content in French - or even changing the app's setting so said app is in French, Even your phone (under settings you can change your phone's language), books, podcasts, you could even change your browser's language. It's through being around the language that most of the time we learn it best.
Any additional feedback or ideas are welcomed!
This is all just coming from my point of view and my experience - my experience IS biased and IS flawed. Between switching chapters a couple times, having extra resources at play, and even having someone who explained it all is 100% Biased and flawed. This is just MY experience. I want to clarify that because I know some people with comment about how I might've missed something amongst switching chapters - which you're right. However, most things were introduced in an order and in said order they weren't always explained very well. Please keep that in mind. When looking at one's experience - their background and such can play a huge role in what they're saying.

Night of the Comet (night photo with light painting during exposure) (OC)
Night of the Comet ~~~~~ This made me think that this could have been a camper somehow appearing in the movie "Interstellar", maybe on Miller's Planet. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the camper with warm white and purple light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This was photographed while Tim Little and I were teaching a night photography workshop at Nelson Ghost Town in Nevada. Two-minute long exposure at night.
