While travelling with the family in April we noted our economy tickets allowed us 23kg per person and one single bag each.
We readied 3 cases. 2 Normal sized cases for my wife and I to check in and for my daughter (5 yrs) and we packed a hand carry sized case for her to check in. This was how we had done things previously as it meant she could comfortably maneuver this smaller bag herself on its wheels.
We arrived at the HKG airport and went to the bag drop. There was a staff member there and they helped us weigh and label the bags. My daughers went first and came to 12kg. My wife's bag was 18kg and then my bag came to 29kg.
This is when the fun and games began. The staff told us that the last bag was overweight and we'd need to lighten it by 6 kg or pay a fine.
I remarked that surely the first two bags were only 30kg and our total was only 59kg vrs our allowance of 69kg. We were 10kg underweight.
Regardless the staff member said that no bag could exceed 23kg. I stated that in past years CX allowed families or groups to share bag allowances. Commonly called ""bag pooling"" this is common on airlines and is fine as long as the total did not exceed the groups total. The CX supervisor that dealt with us refused to even acknowledge the previous bag pooling policy.
Subsequently upon further researching I found the CX website Q&A asked this specific question and it confirms sharing bag allowances is fine on CX❗
I wrote to CX customer service and they said that while bag pooling was fine but that no bag could exceed 23kg. In years past the allowance was 20kg and upper limit for a bag was 32kg. In these situations then pooling was possible. Afterall pooling means some bags being under weight and some being over but the total coming under the aggregate weight allowed.
Since the weight allowance is set at 23kg and they stipulate that no bag may exceed 23kg I pointed out that it is now impossible to pool bags.
Despite explaining this obvious contradiction in their policies, in two emails, CX cannot accept this and just robotically repeat bag pooling can be used but that no bag can now exceed 23kg.

Wiktor Czarnowski disembarks from the Inter-city train, the flurry of coach class passengers rush ahead towards the exit down the platform from him, while a porter guides him and the remaining first class passengers toward an exit through the station’s first class lounge. A small crowd of the first-class passengers forms around a cart carrying their luggage, Wiktor instead walks past carrying only a briefcase. Outside of the trains cool air conditioned interior, Guiana’s tropical heat beats down on him with it’s typical endless onslaught. Casting a quick look over his shoulder to ensure he hasn't been followed, Wiktor’s eye catches on the 120km Tall Space Pier, as one of it's two platforms makes it’s climb to the heavens. A couple of years ago the wheels got worn down and lost their coating and Victorinox (the flagship store in Lausanne, Switzerland) replaced them for me. Free of charge!! I really enjoy everything about this piece of luggage: size, volume, design, quality of the materials - it's the best carry-on I've ever had. Oh spoiler.. I am in a relationship since 3 years, I love my girlfriend and pretty happy with my relationship.
Now.. while I was in Japan with my parents few days back.. we were travelling in a bullet train (shinkansen) from Osaka to Tokyo and everything is chill. My parents were in different cabin so was my sister and the train was about 2hrs 30 min. I had one big luggage bag which I kept in a reserved space. This reserved space is like outside the cabin adjacent to the door. I locked my luggage in the space and went to my seat
Now in this time I slept off coz why to waste time (lol, best way to cut time), I was in deep sleep since last night I got around 4 hrs of sleep.
Once the station arrived, I got up but kinda still tired.. like I was automatically walking based on my subconscious mind’s demand.
I walked towards the gate to open and collect my luggage, and as I opened the door, I saw this beautiful, gorgeous girl maybe from western or European side.. she got nice shoulder length curly hair, beautiful shaped of her face, nice body wearing dark blue shirt and same colour pants ( I dont remember a lot if details).
And once I saw her.. idk what happened.. first I subconsciously smiled (IDK HOW THAT HAPPENED BECAUSE I AM INTROVERTED TYPE) then I took 3 steps and I just looked at her face and suddenly zoned out.. Idk what to do next and as if eyes shut down for a split second. Then I realised I had to collect the bag, but again, Idk how I forgot where I kept the bag.. I looked around but din see the carrier where I locked my bag.. I took few glance but didn’t find it (meanwhile she was seeing me confused). After around 2 seconds I realised the bag kept which was just at right side. I took the bag and got off the train.
I have been wondering what happened to me? And why I think i wanna see her again? I don’t desire to ask her out or something coz I am already dating but maybe I could just say to her “Wow you look breathtaking and mind blowing beautiful”
But maybe thats fine.. maybe I should carry it with me. That day was something I would not forget I guess.

I'm going to the Grand Battle 2024 this August and it will be my very first event. I already have arrangements to fly with Delta from Florida ECP to YUL (Montreal Airport), and I have a bus ticket for a player-sponsored shuttle bus. I'm looking for a good option for a luggage bag/case with the following limitations.
1.) I am trying to bring my Epic Armoury Knightly Sword, the 105 cm variant.
2.) For the bus ticket I have a ticket that allows me room for an oversized luggage bag/case, and a carry-on/backpack sized piece.
3.) I need to be able to carry camping gear and my LARP gear for the whole week. Non-decorum. This includes a sleeping bag, tent, maybe a compact foldable cot or inflatable mattress depending on which is smaller. I do not intend to bring a sleeping pad, those things are really bulky while rolled up despite how light they are, and they suck. Trying to at least be somewhat comfortable throughout the week.
I suppose what I could do is go with a large case for the camping gear, waterproof cloak, and food, and then put any excess clothes that couldn't fit into my "carry-on," but I would still need a bag or case big enough to carry the sword without scrunching the ends. I don't mind doing a little weird configuration with luggage but it HAS to be TSA/Air travel compliant. I already have my plane tickets and there's no way I'm driving from Florida to Quebec by myself lol.

Was on a flight that took off having already been told it had mechanical issues, the engines over heated and we had to return to our origin. The rescheduled flight was scheduled to take-off after my connection, so I tried to get rebooked. New flight wouldn’t land for 24-hours, so I had to buy my own flight (though the man in front of me got rebooked on the same flight for free…). Couldn’t get my luggage back, had to pay for my own new flight, and now I can’t even get anyone to promise to deliver my bag… 🤔 which was a carry-on I was forced to gate check. Is it possible to get actual help from United? What is the secret?

So in a few weeks I am traveling to San Diego for a training at the University of San Diego. I will be staying in the dorms there. Check-in isn’t until 4 pm and my flight gets in at 10am. I checked with the program and they cannot store my luggage, because no one will be there and “they don’t provide the same services as a hotel” which I understand. What should I do with my luggage until then? I bought the city pass and plan on doing some of it before check in time and cannot carry my giant suitcase around with me.

So I had to hand deliver a new passport to this bank in Beijing to get at my salary, which had been accumulating for a full year. I booked a trip of only three days in Beijing and packed almost nothing. They never even asked for the old passport with the visa in it and I forgot to show it to them initially, being back on U.S. soil and all.

So these agents basically interrogated me for about an hour, took a full page of handwritten notes, and then when I thought he was going to go see if my story checked out, he just abruptly let me go.
Immediately thereafter I saw a news story about a customs crackdown on Chinese intellectuals and researchers which I am sure you can find on your own if you want, and I am sure I was caught up in this somehow. Other than dirty clothes and the computer, the only other thing in that bag --- and the last guy hand-searched it and then let me go immediately --- were ACLU "know your rights" cards detailing how to refuse to talk to the police and demand to be charged or released. I have no idea if seeing those were what made him let me go but it was funny when I realized that those were still there. I was also carrying $5000 U.S. cash, which I checked and was the limit I was allowed to take out of China by China, and he didn't seem to care about that paltry sum.
So I guess my question you is: Do they suspect me of drug trafficking fentanyl or being a spy? I wanted to tell them to just X-ray my butthole and get it over with. I'm white and not an advanced degree holder with any access to any knowledge of value, so the spy thing seems far fetched, and they seemed to threaten me not to keep coming through there again... so my secondary question would be, what would happen if I started going through Seattle customs every month like that? I am planning my first (largely solo) trip abroad and would love some advice on how best to pack for it!. While I know this isn't true one-bagging, only 2 bags for 6 months is greatly pared down by my usual standards, and I've found this subreddit extremely helpful for moving me closer toward traveling light. For the last year I've been traveling around the U.S. with a car absolutely stuffed full of extra clothes and supplies so getting down to only 2 bags will be a big change! Luckily, this time traveling has taught me a lot about what clothes I actually wear most and what supplies I actually use. Now I'm just trying to think about what luggage would be best.
My current plan is for my heaviest piece of luggage to be a backpack—my top contender right now is theOsprey Fairview 70L. I'll load it up with my clothes (in packing cubes) and shoes, and will have to check it when flying. My personal item will be the Uniqlo half-moon sling, but I'm stuck on what to bring as my carry-on. A duffel that can roll? A regular, carry-on-sized rolling suitcase?
My reasoning behind making a backpack my heaviest piece of luggage was that it will be easier to carry around, plus it will leave me more hands-free than if I was trying to roll or carry my heaviest piece of luggage. But then I got some feedback (from a non-frequent traveler) that it would be easier to roll a heavier piece of luggage, which is making me doubt my choices. I would love some feedback from people who are frequent travelers about what's actually easier!
For the majority of the trip (minus one month of frequent travel), I will be remaining in the same place for extended periods of time, so it's not like I'll be constantly lugging around my suitcases on trains and staying in a different hostel every night, or even every week. However, I'm aware that it's always easier to travel lighter, even if I'm only moving locations once a month. Any and all advice and input welcome, especially on my backpack choice and ideas for a carry-on!
Edit: I don't know what I was thinking with a 70L backpack. I tried one on in a store and it seemed perfect but obviously it wasn't loaded up and weighted down like it will be when I'm actually traveling. I will be doing regular tourist stuff around major cities, and going to one Michelin star restaurant I will need fancy clothes for, but I will also be doing farm work for much of my trip, so I essentially need two capsules: one for regular clothing and one for getting dirty/work geasun protection (I have worn lots of different types of clothing doing farm work depending on what, exactly, the work is). I don't want to have to do laundry every night and re-wearing clothes covered in sweat and soil is pretty gross in my experience, so that's why I'm checking a bag instead of one-bagging. But I'll definitely pack up all my clothes and see what size suitcase/backpack I actually need. My current plan is for my heaviest piece of luggage to be a backpack—my top contender right now is the
My reasoning behind making a backpack my heaviest piece of luggage was that it will be easier to carry around, plus it will leave me more hands-free than if I was trying to roll or carry my heaviest piece of luggage. But then I got some feedback (from a non-frequent traveler) that it would be easier to roll a heavier piece of luggage, which is making me doubt my choices. I would love some feedback from people who are frequent travelers about what's actually easier!
For the majority of the trip (minus one month of frequent travel), I will be remaining in the same place for extended periods of time, so it's not like I'll be constantly lugging around my suitcases on trains and staying in a different hostel every night, or even every week. However, I'm aware that it's always easier to travel lighter, even if I'm only moving locations once a month. Any and all advice and input welcome, especially on my backpack choice and ideas for a carry-on!
Edit: I don't know what I was thinking with a 70L backpack. I tried one on in a store and it seemed perfect but obviously it wasn't loaded up and weighted down like it will be when I'm actually traveling. Just looking for a bit of guidance from people more knowledgeable on this. As title suggest I’m making a move from US -> UK at the end of the year. Now I’m shipping most items via a professional moving company in a container, but have 6 reps and I’m unsure how best to cross the boarder without the ire of the authorities.
I know I can wear one, but the remaining ones could raise suspicion - so to avoid this could anyone recommend what’s the best way to get them to my new home? Do I put them in the container with the rest of my gear and risk it raising custom flags - or do I put them in my carry on/ check in luggage.
I travel there frequently and depending on the day I know UK customs and border control can be aggressively strict.
So the question I’m asking you all here is - am I over thinking this and will be fine, or do I need to plan for the worse and hope for the best?

TL;DR: AA canceled flight due to staffing issue and stranded elderly individuals without their luggage or proper compensation.
I’ve never written anything like this before (to my knowledge) but I am sharing this today in hopes that American Airlines will see it and take the feedback to help serve their customers better vs. the greed and lack of empathy I experienced today.
This morning, there was a flight set to head from Palm Springs to Dallas (flight AA2296).
The flight was canceled after about an hour of delay. American Airlines canceled the flight due to staffing issues. The pilot even came out to the gate and told the entire waiting room over the intercom— he had requested four flight attendants from the company, but the airline only sent one. With such a big flight, it could not take off understaffed. He apologized and expressed it was completely a failure on the part of the airline and that he understood our frustrations. His empathy was appreciated, but I cannot say that was given from the rest of their staff.
Even though the flight remained empty, the plane was still sent to its destination (Dallas) with customer bags still on board (my own included). There was even a family in front of me whose end destination was Barcelona— their bags left without them to Spain. I personally am missing an event I was heading to, but rather than being able to fly back home, I’m having to take a flight to chase down my luggage.
To top it off, booking new flights was a nightmare— few options comparatively, and practically none that could send someone to their destination within 24 hours. An international destination? That poor family will probably not see Spain for days. Why were the bags sent without their owners? Why would this ever be considered acceptable?
The airline even kept auto booking new flights and undoing the work of my travel agent, ultimately losing me decent flight options and sticking me with worse ones. This was happening to other passengers too.
The most concerning part?
Majority of the individuals I saw for this flight (Palm Springs) were elderly / senior citizens. These elderly folks were being asked to spend the next day or so without their bags of clothing (underwear, socks, shirts, etc.), toiletries, and perhaps even medication if not kept in their carry-ons. Everything is also incredibly spread out in the Palm Springs area—everything requires a car in the desert– nothing is within walking distance…especially for older individuals. Even getting to a store or restaurant will cost money and be difficult to coordinate (especially if older and unfamiliar with ridesharing apps). And costs of some of these items at the local hotels? A pair of shorts at the gift shop will set someone back $39.99. Underwear– $29.99. Expensive rental cars are the only other option.
These elderly folks were required to wait 1-2 hours standing in line as well to receive a voucher from the airline and find out where their bags had gone. And communication regarding all of this was abhorrent– they had customers going back and forth to different areas trying to find help with little if any direction.
The voucher? One night in a hotel and $12 to eat. $12 total to be used for lunch, dinner, and breakfast the next day…I don’t know of any restaurant in southern California that will serve a full meal for $4. It is also unclear if the voucher is even usable outside of the airport…a small airport with incredibly limited options and $4 water bottles.
.And if you have dietary restrictions due to health? That won’t buy you 75% of a meal. For me personally, this voucher is next to worthless given my own personal requirements.
These elderly folks (often living off fixed incomes) are now required to purchase clothing, toiletries, food, transportation to and from these places and the hotel, etc. to last them the next ~24 hours…with a $12 food voucher. And this was not weather or an “act of God” cancellation outside of the airline’s control. This was solely due to the airline’s incompetency and their lack of ability to listen to the concerns of their staff (the kind pilot). Given it is the airline’s fault, let-down customers should not have to be financially responsible.
To top it off, the woman at the customer services desk was incredibly unsympathetic to the customers in line. When I expressed to her that $12 would not be enough given my health and dietary restrictions and I could not afford to purchase food for the next 24 hours off of that alone, she said, “Too bad, because that’s all you’re getting.”
She did not seem to care about the dozens of elderly individuals in line either.
$12 across ~100 people would cost this multibillion dollar corporation $1200. That’s absolute peanuts. A hotel subsidized through negotiated deals for 75 people (assuming some traveled together)...all-in-all I doubt the costs to this company exceeded $10,000.
I personally am missing celebratory anniversary time with my husband and a celebratory night for one of my best friend's 30th birthdays. I have to book a different flight from that destination to get back home (I booked that one personally through a different airline since it was post work travel).This will personally cost add’l money I wouldn’t have spent otherwise if not for American Airlines’s incompetency. Again, it was not an act of God that caused these cancellations.
Special celebrations lost. Hundreds of dollars lost to add’l travel, food, clothing, toiletries, etc. Time lost. Stress gained. And all the airline will give is $12 as compensation.
I am most upset for the elderly customers on that flight who had to wait for 1-2 hours standing in line for a $12 food voucher. I took this travel for work, if needed, I have support to purchase food as I’m making my way to my next destination. But most individuals on that flight did not have that privilege. Everything will be out of personal pocket for them. And all AA is willing to give in total across the flight is worth less than a month’s rent in Lincoln, Nebraska.
American Airlines dropped the ball and has made it so the consequences to their business are negligible. Their system is set up to help the customer as little as possible. Power without accountability breeds disaster, and customers are the ones losing.
AA, do better.

Hey so I booked a flight with Delta Airlines to Seattle, the first leg of the trip is operated by AirFrance. While booking (on StudentUniverse) it said that It included 1 checked bag. I went to Delta airlines, entered my reservation, saw that I was allowed 2 checked luggages. Did the same with AirFrance, found that I was only allowed a carry on?? 😭😭😭😭 (had to pay for a checked luggage, they didn’t mention the price on the page) I looked for the same flight I booked on AirFrance’s website, it was double the price and it included 1 checked bag.
