2024.05.31 19:24 larki18 Viggo Mortensen scores his own movies. His music background is a saga in itself

Viggo Mortensen scores his own movies. His music background is a saga in itself
Viggo Mortensen was always drawn to the old piano in his grandparents’ house in Watertown, N.Y., 30 miles south of the Canadian border, the community where he lived after his parents divorced. Whenever he went over, he would sit down and play. He improvised melodies, usually imagining a scene or something visual.
“It was a comfortable place to be, and you could sort of travel with your imagination as you were playing,” the actor, 65, says via Zoom from his part-time home in Spain, the afternoon light spilling from the window behind him as he lights up a smoke. “Even as a kid, I liked doing that. I always related music to images. I would imagine being somewhere.”
It’s only too clear in hindsight that Mortensen was, essentially, scoring a movie in his mind.
Now he’s doing it for real. Mortensen has written and directed “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” a new western out Friday in which he also stars as a Danish immigrant handyman who leaves his bold new bride (Vicky Krieps) to serve in the Civil War. As if that weren’t enough hats to wear, Mortensen composed the music, performing several instruments on the score.
Mortensen, who also scored his 2020 directorial debut, “Falling,” joins a very exclusive club of directors who’ve created the music for their own films — from Charlie Chaplin and Clint Eastwood to Jeymes Samuel. But one doesn’t get the sense that this is some auteurist flex, or even simply a means to save on the music budget (as was the case for fellow club member John Carpenter). For Mortensen, who also does painting and photography and runs a micro publishing company, making music has always been a vital part of telling the story of his life.
“He really is a total, complete artist,” says Elijah Wood, Mortensen’s “Lord of the Rings” co-star, on a Zoom call from his home in Highland Park. “Certainly, there are people who express themselves in different disciplines and have other interests, but he’s so accomplished in everything he does. And he’s very humble and quiet about it. He just does.”
As his acting career began to take off in the 1980s — his first big screen role was as an Amish man in Peter Weir’s “Witness” — Mortensen married punk singer Exene Cervenka of the Los Angeles band X after they played husband and wife in the 1987 televangelism satire “Salvation!” He wrote some lyrics with her, although his role in her career was mainly limited to taking the cover photos for her solo albums. Their union ended in 1992, but it produced a son, Henry, who became a skilled musician and “knows a lot more about punk rock music than I do,” Mortensen says, “even though I like it.”
Still, there was always something punk, or bohemian, about Mortensen onscreen — even though he was often cast as working-class, macho types: a drug dealer, a hitman. He played tough parts sensitively, and straight parts sideways.
A fateful moment came in the mid-’90s, when the producers of a spoken word album about Greek and Roman myths approached Mortensen to contribute a piece about Poseidon. He wrote and performed a water-themed poem and “crudely, with a little tape recorder, recorded some water sounds to go with it,” he says. “I mixed it in a half-assed way and sent it to the company.”
They sent it back, fully mixed, with some interesting guitar parts by an enigmatic musician whose stage name was Buckethead. Brian Patrick Carroll is an Anaheim native who wears an upside-down KFC bucket for a hat over his long curly locks and a white “Halloween” mask. Mortensen asked Buckethead if he wanted to collaborate and they met in the Chatsworth studio of Travis Dickerson.
Something sparked between Mortensen, with his improvisational and decidedly non-pop inclinations and poetic musings, and Buckethead, with his virtuosic shredding and duffel bag full of Japanese toys. Their first indie album was “One Less Thing to Worry About” in 1997 (long out of print), which featured a black-and-white photo of Mortensen eating a shoe on its cover.
“We’ve made several records since then,” says Mortensen, “all with Travis recording and laughing and just enjoying us clowning around. Some things are really odd to listen to, I guess. But every once in a while, we’d come up with a melody that was really beautiful.”
The whirlwind, impromptu sessions involved Mortensen’s son from the beginning. Afterward, “I would feel just very calm, almost like a really benevolent kind of drug or something I’d taken,” Mortensen says, laughing at himself. “I would drive home feeling really good, and then when we had the record finished, I would just listen to it over and over again — especially driving.”
Even when Mortensen found blockbuster fame as Aragorn in the “Rings” films, he kept making these weirdo soundscape albums. At the height of “Rings” fever, he roped his new co-stars — Wood, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd — into contributing on a bizarre record called “pandemoniumfromamerica.”
Mortensen “invited us hobbits to laser tag,” Wood recalls, and then they all went over to Dickerson’s studio, where Buckethead and a bunch of instruments were scattered around the room. “It was just a couple of friends hanging out and messing around in the studio, and suddenly these things started to take shape out of the ether.”
On one track, “Half Fling,” Wood and Monaghan made “high-pitched, Muppet call-and-response voices,” says Wood. “I became aware instantly that the musical expression is not dissimilar from painting or photography for him. I don’t know that it even has an identifiable genre. I wouldn’t know how to classify it. It’s sort of beautifully undisciplined.”
“We did it for ourselves, really,” Mortensen says. “That’s how I see making art, generally — making it as a way of remembering what I’m experiencing at that time.”
That was the same impulse for Mortensen’s turn as a writer-director. “Falling” was inspired by memories of his mother and father, who divorced when he was young, and the dementia they both developed in older age.
Based on his own original script, “The Dead Don’t Hurt” is a classic western in many respects. Mortensen plays the Danish-born Holger Olsen — his own father, Viggo Sr., was Danish and the actor still has family in Denmark — and Krieps plays Vivienne Le Coudy, a French Canadian woman with clear echoes of Mortensen’s mother, Grace Gamble, of Canadian descent. The story was born from his image of her running around in the maple forests near the Canadian border as a little girl.
Mortensen says he wrote the score as he was writing the screenplay, pegging where he thought music should go. He knew he wanted music of the period and reached out to violinist Scarlet Rivera — who famously played with Bob Dylan in the ’70s — and cellist Cameron Stone to perform his folky Americana ideas. They convened in the Chatsworth studio and Mortensen joined in on piano and also played bass, guitar and percussion.
When it came to shooting the movie, the score was as much of a guide as the script.
“I played the music for the cinematographer and for my first [assistant director] and some of the actors,” he says, “just to explain: This is the tone I’m going for and this will affect the duration of the scene, the rhythm of the scene and even shot selection. And because it’s a nonlinear story I knew there were going to be transitions from one time period to another, or ellipses. I knew the music would help.”
The sharp sound of clacking claves accompanies Mortensen’s character in the present day, hunting down the man who preyed on his wife during his military absence. Warm fiddle tunes and sweet harmonies underscore happier times in their marriage. Mortensen’s melodic score has a tactile, earthy feel that perfectly suits the steep trails, canyons and rustic production design. (Stunning locations in Durango, Mexico, stood in for Nevada.)
“I don’t like it when the music in a movie is telling you, ‘Now you must be afraid. Now you must be sad. Now you must be happy,’” the actor-director-composer says, “any more than I like it when the dialogue does that or the acting or the cinematography. So the idea was to have all the music before, and know what we were aiming to get across — but that it would accompany, and sometimes be in contrast, in the right moment, to what was happening.”
Mortensen says he might hire a different composer for the next movie he directs. He’s aware of his own limitations. Regardless, he’ll involve them early.
But whenever he comes across a piano — in a hotel, a restaurant or in a holding area on the set of “Eastern Promises” — he’s going to sit down and play it.
“Even if you just play for two minutes,” he says, “it brings you back down, puts your feet on the ground” — and it lets Mortensen’s imagination wander off into some new world.

2024.05.30 17:56 smolbibeans Trip report : One month through 10 US National Parks in April-May

Trip report : One month through 10 US National Parks in April-May
I'm back from a roadtrip from San Francisco to Hamilton, ON, through Nevada, Utah, Northern Arizona, Western Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and more, with some camping but mostly motel/hostels/staying with family and friends. I came to this subreddit before for advice so I thought I'd do a little trip report on what I packed/what I bought vs what I actually used or needed.
Overall, I think I did a good job packing, it all fit into one carry on (+ personal item okay), and I was pretty ready for everything we encountered while not feeling like I overpacked. At the coldest, it was 26°F (-3°C) at night in Great Basin, NV and Bryce Canyon, UT, and at the warmest it was 77°F (25°C) in the day in Zion. We had pretty moderate temperatures for most of our trip, from Moab to Yellowstone we had a very mild version of each place's weather and that was great.
Bag(s):
1- Quechua Forclaz 50L : this has been my trusted backpack for over 7 years, I considered upgrading to an Osprey before this trip but couldn't justify it financially when it was still working, and I don't regret it. Having a backpack I know so well was great
2- Quechua Arpenaz 20L : potentially slightly cheating drop the one bag rule, I had this as a personal item on the plane (to bring gifts from France to the US and other gifts back from the US to France) and to serve as a day pack on hikes. It worked great, I could fit in a water bottle on each side, my tripod, a sweater, lunch, snack, camera accessories, my hat if it got cumbersome, just perfect.
3- a mesh tote bag (not pictured here) that folds very small and could be stuffed in a pocket. Like I predicted, it was super convenient for grocery trips, times where I didn't want to have a whole backpack with me, or to create a compartment of sort within my day pack.
Clothes :
  • 8 tops : 2 thermal long sleeve shirts, 4 tee shirts, 1 nicer long sleeve blouse, 1 tank top => I used both of the 2 thermal shirts a lot, I assigned one of them to be for cold nights of camping and the other one for hiking. It was the right amount of tee shirts and tank top ; I will say the nicer blouse (called a sassy top by a commenter lol) was not necessary, but I did wear it twice, for a dinner out at a restaurant and a hostel party, and I was glad I had it.
-1 summer dress (could be worn on top of the thermal long sleeve and leggings if it was colder or on its own if it was warmer) => this one I was also recommended to drop, but given how warm it was getting and the fact that I wanted to have nice options I still took it. I ended up wearing it a couple of times for outings, but also every time I went swimming, as a pre-/post swim outfit to just throw on top of a swimsuit, so it was convenient to have
-7 bottoms : 1 pair of cycling shorts, 1 skirt, 2 pair of black leggings, 1 pair of light wide legged pants, 1 pair of joggings, 1 pair of after ski pants => people had conflicting advice on the wide legged pants, I'm glad I took them because they were flowy and great for layering with leggings on days where there was a big temperature difference between the morning and the afternoon and comfy for long drives. People pointed out it seemed like there was a legging or pair of jogging missing (originally only 1 legging), so I went to Walmart and REI when I got to the US and I ended up buying the legging as welle as the jogging and the skort. The legging was a great buy, with 2 pairs I could again use one at night for camping and one for hiking ; the jogging would have been great if it didn't end up being too big and uncomfortable, I only wore it on laundry days ; and I only used the skort once, but tbh I bought it knowing it would be mostly used once I would be home, it was just good quality at REI and great price.
  • 1 pyjama set + 1 pair of warm bed socks=> I actually bought the pyjama set once in the US, and used 2 pairs of socks when camping.
  • 9 underwear, 7 pair of socks (mix of ski socks and sport socks), 2 regular bras and 2 sports bra => I ended up buying an extra sports bra at Walmart, it was a good price and I ended up using it so much more than I thought I would. Looking back, I would take 3 sports bra and only 1 regular bra, and an extra 1 or two pairs of socks. It was fine as it was but my socks got dirty so much quicker than I was expecting and I really needed to change them once a day, and with the extra requirement of an extra pair of sock to sleep at night it was a bit tight.
-1 swimsuit => wasn't sure I used it but I was very happy to have it in the end ! I used it to swim in Lake Powell as well as relax in the pools of two different hotels we stayed in after long days of driving.
  • 3 sweaters : 1 thinner sweater and 2 fleece jackets, they could be layered on top of one another => was originally planning on taking only one fleece but the good people of this sub convinced me otherwis, and I was very glad I listened. I was wearing a fleece at least at some point almost every day, even for a couple of hours, and I felt a lot less dirty being able to switch fleece.
  • *1 puffer jacket *=> I was originally thinking about taking a leather jacket, because I owned one and I didn't want to spend the money buying a puffer... You guys gave me a talking to haha, and you were right !! I also got great recommendations and ended up getting a puffer from Decathlon, it is so comfy and practical, folds into a pocket, not the warmest thing I've ever seen but worked very well layered with a fleece, also not very waterproof though.
-*1 rain coat *=> I mentioned a rain "cap" in my previous post, thinking about a cape or poncho, and that mistake caused some confusion haha. I ended up finding a raincoat in my closet that I took, I didn't end up using it but still glad I had it just in case.
Shoes :
-1 pair of hiking boots => they're somewhat falling apart inside but still sturdy and good. I did realize in this trip that they were a bit big, especially because I could never lace them as tight as I wanted around the ankle
  • 1 pair of sneakers=> I got myself some good tennis shoes/athletic shoes/whatever you want to call them and they were super comfy and efficient.
  • I had considered taking a pair of flip flops or sandals, didn't have space for them and forgot to buy any. I think it would have been good while showering in common showers a couple of times, and convenient after a swim, but I dealt fine without them.
Accessories :
-A travel pillow=> self explanatory, was great to use on the plane and for camping, actually forgot it on one of my flights back
  • A pillowcase=> great for stuffing with my travel pillow and a fleece jacket while camping
  • Microfiber towel => I used this surprisingly rarely (only 3 times the whole trip I believe);as all the hostel, hotel and friends we stayed at provided us with towels, and we didn't shower at campings that often...
  • 1 earwarmer=> especially useful when camping in the evening and at night, also used as an eye mask to sleep in the morning despite the sun
  • 1 scarf
-1 pair of finger less gloves=> people told me to get actual gloves, I didn't and I didn't miss it because it didn't get that cold and it didn't snow except lightly one morning in Colorado. But my hands do stay very warm naturally, and my partner was happy to have her own gloves.
  • Sunhat
  • A pair of sunglasses + My regular reading glasses
  • A small light water bottle (0.25L or 9 Oz) => this was objectively very small, but I decided against my Hydroflask because of its weight. This was good for short walks and just at night, I got bigger bottles on the trip and we used them to store water in the car as well as take on longer hikes
  • A big travel mug => I didn't bring it with me from France but got one from my in laws while in the US, great when camping
  • *Jewelry *: 3 pair of earrings, 2 necklaces => completely overkill, on the rare occasions I dressed up or wanted to wear jewelry I only ever wore the same one pair of earrings.
Toiletries :
  • Comb
  • Beauty stuff : mini eyeshadow palette, liquid eyeshadow, small concealer, BB cream, compact powder, mascara, two liquid lipsticks => I actually ended up using all of this at some point except one of the lipsticks. The liquid eyeshadow was a purchase right before this trip and it was awesome
  • Skincare: niacinamid face sunscreen, niacinamide serum, hyaluronic acid face cream => that was plenty enough, my skin loves niacinamide
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner => all purchased while we were there to use for both of us
  • Medication : some doses of diarrhea medication, some paracetamol, migraine medication, allergy pills, acid reflux pills => I did injure my tailbone like a week in and didnt have anything for that, but bought a huge bottle of Naproxen at Costco for $8 so it was fine.
Electronics :
  • Redmi Note 12 5G with 256 Go memory
  • Portable battery => it was enough to charge my phone 2-3 times, I didn't actually ever need to fully use it because the most we camped in a row was 4 nights and we weren't cross country backpacking. I do want to invest in a solar powered one eventually
  • Universal adaptor
  • Camera : Canon EOS M50 with a 15-45mm lens => I've had it since it came out in 2018 and it's so compact and easy to use ! I got it professionally cleaned before I left and that was a good idea
  • Camera accessories: Boya universal cardioid microphone with furry windshield, old Slick tripod a family friend gifted me, 3 extra camera batteries, 1 regular charger, 1 usb compatible charger that I can plug on my portable battery, 2x16Go memory card and one 512 Go memory card => everything worked great, my 512 Go memory card lasted me the whole month without having to empty it despite vlogging as well
  • No computer => I had posted here that I was going back and forth on taking my laptop, and a few Reddit users correctly pointed out that I was considering taking it out of fear rather than any real necessities. I had my phone with YouTube and netflix and social media, one book, and that was enough entertainment honestly. I did take a small memory harddrive with some movies on it to maybe watch on my partner's computers, did not end up using it so...
And that's it !
Organisation wise, I put :
  • all of my light clothes for warm weather in one packing cube,
  • all of my clothes for colder weather in another packing cube,
  • my underwear and socks between a smaller pouch and my sneakers when flying,
  • my towel and swimsuit in a very thin and foldable dry bag,
  • my pajama for the next night (depending on the weather) in the pillow case
  • my toiletries, jewelry, make up, skincare and medication in a little toiletry bag (with the liquids in the transparent bag within it).
  • my electronics in a little pouch => I wanted to get a specific electronic pouch that would be more sturdy and also prevent cables from getting tangled but I thought about it too late to purchase it and this random one I had worked fine
Once in the US, we bought or got from my in-laws the actual camping gear, since it was for the roadtrip and I didn't have to fly with it I'm not including it here.
Happy to answer any questions, I'm very thankful to this community and all the travel ones on Reddit :)

MTB Roadtrip
Looking for some advice here! I am planning on moving from Golden , CO to San Francisco, CA this weekend/next week. I'm going to be solo roadtripping with my mountain Bike (Spot Mayhem 150), and wanted to hit some iconic MTB destinations along the way.
Can anyone who's ridden in any of these places share some favorites/advice/recommendations? I'm a 26yr old male rider with good endurance and technical skills, nothing I'm really afraid of but open to any type of trail! (I'd also be open to food suggestions too)
Also, if anyone lives in one of these places and wants to ride together, let's link!
Thanks in advance :)

Itinerary

  • Moab: 1-2 days
    • been to Moab quite a few times. I love the The Whole Enchilada and the Amasa Back/Captain Ahab area (Rockstacker goes hard)
  • Sedona: 3 days
    • Never been. Heard great things but know nothing. This is where I'd appreciate recommendations the most.
  • Santa Cruz: One afternoon
    • Been here before but never ridden. Likely will only going to have time for one ride
  • San Franciso: Infinite
    • My final destination. I will be living here for the summer at a minimum. I've heard Mt. Diablo is great but could really use some trail recs/riding teams/groups, or anything else you see relevant. Cheers

2024.05.29 04:18 my3boysmyworld Don’t want to go to bed angry

Update* Don’t really know how to update, if I should do it here or make a new post, but I’m tired, been up since 3:30 this morning, and I think that contributed to a lot of what happened tonight. Let’s just say, things exploded. We both said things we didn’t mean (I told him I was going home with the boys and he could stay with mommy for all I cared. I know, low blow and seriously not right of me), but then we talked it out. We are all good. You’d think, a couple that’s been married for nearly 22 years would know how to communicate better. But, I think that’s part of the problem. We usually do communicate very well and we rarely fight. It’s so rare, that in 22 years of marriage, 25 years together, I can count on one hand how many fights we’ve had, including this one. I think we both didn’t know how to fight with the other and he resorted to withdrawing and radio silence and I exploded like I’m known to do. Things are good, and we are definitely not going to bed angry. Thank you to anyone who read!
Hi, I’m new here and on Mobile, please excuse any typos, grammar, or formatting errors. Please do not share. Husband and I have been married for 21, almost 22 years.
Hi, hoping for some advice. My husband (54M), two teen sons (19M, 16M), and I (48F) are currently on a cross country trip (USA). We left from Oklahoma, through Colorado and Utah to arrive in Northern California to visit my in laws. While planning this trip, I reminded my husband that one of my medical issues (I have many, and they make traveling hard) is severe heat intolerance and knowing how warm his mother keeps her house (it’s currently 87°F here and she will not use air conditioning, she most likely will have the heater on) I can not spend any time there without becoming heat sick. I reminded him numerous times. I especially reminded him when his brother and sister suggested we get an Air BNB to share. I told him I didn’t have a problem with it as long as I had control of the thermostat. That nipped that idea in the bud immediately. Just for reference, I will get red in my face, start sweating profusely, and even pass out or vomit at 68°F. 70°F and above will give me a migraine. I’ve been sent to the ER numerous times for heat stroke at what most would call “normal” or even “cool” temps. I keep my house at 60°F year round.
Now, what happened today. We were making our last push from Nevada into California, when we stopped in Reno for lunch. As we are walking into the restaurant, my husband turns to me and says “oh, we are going to my moms for dinner instead of going out. We are having spaghetti”. I saw freaking RED. I just got super quiet, don’t say anything. As we ordered and waited on food, I kept thinking about this, and after already having one heat exhaustion episode on this trip already (we just left on Saturday), I made a decision. I just said “I don’t think I will go to dinner tonight” I didn’t even get to finish the sentence. He threw his fork on the plate and walked off. Now, this pissed me off royally. He’s now mad at ME for something I can’t control and we had already agreed before this trip that we would limit our time at his moms??? Oh hell no. I texted him and said “Before you get pissed at me, why didn’t you ask me why? I have incredibly valid reasons you know.” So, after he came back, I tried to just ignore how mad he was, but his anger just made me more and more angry. So, I put my silverware down (notice, I didn’t throw mine down, I sat it down, said “I’ve lost my appetite. I’m going to the gift shop” (we were at a place with a gift shop). I went and just browsed. He came to me about 5 to 10 minutes later and asked to speak. So, we went outside and he just looked at me. So, again, I told him that we agreed to limit my time at his mothers and why. He got mad and said “I always have to make excuses for why you can’t go do things with my family”. Excuses???? Medical reasons aren’t excuses, IMO, they are valid reasons. So, yeah, at this point, he just started the biggest fight of our 21 year marriage. I said “fine! I’ll fucking go then!! But if I fucking pass out from heat stroke, that’s on YOU!”. I went back in to the bathroom.
He then changed dinner to a restaurant but I am still really, really pissed. He has never not taken my conditions with this little compassion and he never once fucking apologized or even admit to me that he fucked up. I know I should just let it go, but I’m a Libra. I’m still pissed at an old friend of mine for accusing me of something I didn’t do. And that was 30 years ago. I hold epic grudges and I can’t let things go unless I’m apologized to.
I don’t know why I’m posting this here. Except, I have no one else to turn to here. I’m currently too pissed to talk to my best friend aka husband. I should note, I’m a Libra and epic at holding grudges. Hard for me to let it go. So, Reddit, how do I forgive him without an apology when I’m stubborn and don’t forgive easily?
TL/DR: I’m currently pissed at my husband for getting angry with me over something out of my control and need advice on how to forgive without an apology, cause I’m not good at that.

New world blues Ch 174: Oh this is that kinda war
The Battle of Elko was never supposed to happen, why it started will vary from person to person.
Some blame the rampaging Danite Zealot troops. Others will blame a trigger happy trooper who alerted the incoming force. Regardless of who started it, it happened.
Before the battle the real target was New Vegas, mormon missionaries had spent the better part of the year scouting the land scape of Nevada and other states west of the rockies. By this time the fist of God had assumed power over Deseret and was now using these once peaceful preachers of god to mark targets of righteous conquest.
Elko was marked down as an unimportant supply depot of the WRF it sat in Wendover state but it wouldn't need more than a token force to capture it.
When the great holy war began it put up much more of a fight than expected and so reinforcements were sent. Seeing the Mormons reinforce General Rex pitcher called for back up. And slowly but surely the once small town not even bigger than the strip became the center for a bloody conflict.
3 times it was believed the town would be lost but yet the town held. Sabotage and atrocities would not hinder the defenders who withstood the scalding heat of the steam weapons.
Eventually as the tide turned and progress was gained elsewhere the Deseret forces would pull out of the quagmire they never intended to drag out but not before one last assault led to the capture and broadcast execution of Gabriel Taylor who was captured during prayer by one Private Ollie Cook

Sienna Acquires the “Case Lake West Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatite Project” in Ontario
May 23, 2024, Sienna Resources Inc. (“Sienna” or the “Company”) (SIE—TSX.v, SNNAF—USA, A1XCQ0–Germany) wishes to announce the acquisition of the new “Case Lake West Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatite Project” in the Larder Lake Mining division of Ontario, Canada, roughly 100 km north of Kirkland Lake, NE Ontario. This project consists of approximately 2,200 contiguous acres prospective for Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatites directly bordering Power Metals Corp’s (PWM) Case Lake cesium and pegmatite swarm discovery. On May 22, 2024 Power Metals announced “WORLD-CLASS CESIUM RESULTS UP TO 18.13% AT CASE LAKE.” This was very exciting news regarding this growing cesium district. Sienna management cautions that past results or discoveries on properties in proximity to Sienna may not necessarily be indicative of the presence of mineralization on the company’s properties.
Case Lake West Cesiumand Spodumene Pegmatite Project
Jason Gigliotti, President of Sienna states, “Management is pleased to be able to acquire the Case Lake West Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatite Project directly bordering Power Metal’s Case Lake discovery. This area is very active currently and Management is looking to start operations as soon as possible. With the significant announcement by Power Metals on May 22, 2024 of their ‘World-class cesium results…’ Sienna’s management is encouraged by these important results achieved directly bordering our property. Ontario is one of the most well-known mining regions in the world, and we are very pleased to have a large footprint in the heart of it. Management is very optimistic about the remainder of the year and how the overall tenor of the junior market is improving. Sienna has been building a strong portfolio of Canada focused assets in 2024 primarily in Uranium and now for Cesium and Lithium. Sienna management plans to continue and build on this trend in the future.”
About Sienna Resources Inc.
Sienna has recently acquired the “Case Lake West Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatite Project” in Larder Lake Mining division of Ontario, Canada roughly 100 km north of Kirkland Lake, NE Ontario. This project consists of approximately 2,200 contiguous acres prospective for Cesium and Spodumene Pegmatites. Sienna has also just acquired the 10,357 acre “Uranium Town Project” bordering Denison Mines Corporation (DML, DNN) , the 10,845 contiguous acre “Dragon Uranium Project” bordering Cameco Corporation (CCO, CCJ) and the 55,440 acre “Atomic Uranium Project” in the world renowned Athabasca Basin of Saskatchewan. Also, Sienna recently expanded the “Elko Lithium Project” in Elko County, Nevada. This project consists of approximately 1840 contiguous acres directly bordering Surge Battery Metals’ (NILI) “Nevada North Lithium Project” in Elko County, Nevada who announced the highest grade lithium deposit in the USA. Sienna is also one of the larger landholders in Clayton Valley Nevada. Sienna’s Clayton Valley projects include the Blue Clay Lithium Project, the Silver Peak South Project, and the Clayton Valley Deep Basin Lithium Project. Clayton Valley is home to the only lithium production in North America, being Albemarle Corp’s (NYSE: ALB) Silver Peak deposit. This project is also near Tesla Motors Inc.’s (Nasdaq: TSLA) Gigafactory in Nevada. On March 18, 2021, Schlumberger New Energy Venture (NYSE: SLB) announced the development of a lithium extraction pilot plant through its new venture, NeoLith Energy in a strategic partnership with Pure Energy (TSX.v: PE). The deployment of the pilot plant will be in Clayton Valley, Nevada, USA. The NeoLith Energy sustainable approach uses a differentiated direct lithium extraction (DLE) process to enable the production of high-purity, battery-grade lithium material while reducing the production time from over a year to weeks. Results from this pilot plant are expected in 2024 and could have a significant impact on the brine prospects within Clayton Valley Nevada as Sienna is located in the deepest section of this brine deposit.
This project was acquired via staking.

2024.05.23 05:30 ExaminationPlenty255 PNW Road Trip!

Hi all! Looking for some guidance or suggestions about my road trip up the PNW. Me and my partner have 9-10 days free for a road trip for my birthday. My hope is to get up to Seattle, but thinking maybe I should scrap that and wait to fly out another time. We’re bringing our lab with us and plan to camp in NorCal and Oregon, so far we have reserved a campground in Fort Bragg and are looking for our next stop on OR.
Is 9-10 enough to properly enjoy a trip all the way to Washington or should I focus on NorCal and Oregon this trip? Thanks for any suggestions!

2024.05.20 22:56 spuarestpeg IHG Rewards + Ambassador nights

IHG Rewards + Ambassador nights
Honestly, sick of having endless conversations with "Diamond Elite Support" who give me different answers every time I speak to them. They keep telling me Palazzo (Vegas) is bookable 60 days ahead but I'm been showing zero availability since my last trip in December 2023. Now today, it's popping up with the 'Reward nights not available at this hotel' but the support team say that's not true.
Secondly, the Ambassador night is such a pain to book. Finding availability before it expires seems like a herculean task. Just me or everyone in the same boat?
Can't wait to use my as 10 nights or so of points and never use IHG again.

2024.05.20 15:47 itsamalarkaly Trump's Wildwood Mirage

Trump's Wildwood Mirage
Shout out for some great reporting, something corporate media has given up on. It’s a good lesson on how MAGA creates fake news. Always projecting.
Trump’s Wildwood Mirage By Bob Hennelly May 16, 2024, 9:03 pm in Columnist, News
Sharing is caring! Wildwood officials who were the source for the Associated Press’s reporting that former President Trump drew between 80,000 to 100,000 to a beach front weekend rally now say it was not the number on the beach at the rally per se, but rather it was the number of people “in our town.”
For the actual rally number “we defer to the Trump Campaign for the exact count on the beach,” the latest Wildwood statement asserts.
Lisa Fagan, the Wildwood press spokesperson AP originally cited as the source for the original crowd estimate was quoted as saying the eye-popping estimate was “based off her own observations on the scene Saturday, having seen ‘dozens’ of other events in the same space.”
Five days later, when asked to explain the wide variance between the AP reporting and the NJ.com video that reveals a crowd in the few thousands, Fagan provided a statement from Mayor Troiano at odds with what the wire service initially attributed to Fagan.
“As a tourist town, we speak in tourism numbers,” Troiano wrote. “When we see that volume of people attending a beach event, we know that 80,000+ people are in our town. We see a quarter of a million visitors every weekend in the summer on our 1.89-mile boardwalk, not to mention our five-mile island, so we know what that volume looks like. They were watching and listening from the beach and boardwalk, in bars and restaurants, at hotels and second homes. People even lined up along the streets parade-style. We defer to the Trump Campaign for the exact count on the beach.”
Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano (R) told NJ Advance Media last week “the rally will be held between Schellenger and Spicer avenues, a stretch of beach between two amusement park piers” accommodating “a crowd size of between 30,000 and 40,000.”
Troiano is under indictment on state corruption charges that he, along with former Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron and City Commissioner Steve Mikulski, fraudulently obtained coverage in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) as full time employees. All three pleaded not guilty.
There’s a hearing scheduled in Troiano’s case on May 17.
I had cited the AP reporting on Trump’s rally size in my InsiderNJ story that was picked up by Salon.
Since I started writing for the Ramsey Mahwah Reporter at 17, over a half century ago, the AP has been the gold standard for news gathering. Founded in 1846, AP has been “an independent news cooperative, whose members are U.S. newspapers and broadcasters, steadfast in our mission to inform the world,” according to its website.
Steve Peoples, AP’s chief political reporter, who was on the rally story byline, tweeted “Lisa Fagan, spokesperson for the city of Wildwood, told The Associated Press that she estimated the crowd represented between 80,000 and 100,000 attendees, based off her own observations on the scene Saturday, having seen ‘dozens’ of other events in the same space.”
On May 11 before the rally, People tweeted “Trump’s team expects ‘tens of thousands’ of supporters to attend this afternoon’s Jersey Shore rally, which may be among the largest of his political career.”
People’s twitter account phrase is “the other side is not the enemy.”
But it just wasn’t the crowd size that AP used to boost the former president’s narrative. They gave his grievance about his having to endure criminal prosecution credence in their story headlined “Trump tells Jersey Shore crowd he’s being forced to endure ‘Biden show trial’ in hush money case.”
Then in the body of the story what the headline says is Trump’s view pops up in the ‘objective’ narrative.
“Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, drew what his team called a ‘mega crowd’ to a Saturday evening rally in the southern New Jersey resort town of Wildwood, 150 miles (241 kilometers) south of the New York City courthouse where he has been forced to spend most weekdays sitting silently through his felony hush money trial.
Sounds oppressive.
I wrote about AP’s media relations about the wide discrepancy between AP’s reporting on the crowd size and the actual video from the event. “The number is an estimate from an independent city official. The reporting notes this and is transparent about how Fagan arrived at the estimate,” AP’s media relations responded.
The AP wasn’t alone. “Sandwiched between the boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean, Mr. Trump stood in front of tens of thousands of people at a rally on the beach in Wildwood, N.J., where he largely repeated the same criticisms of President Biden that have characterized his stump speech in recent months,” the Times reported from a story datelined from the rally.
Of course, Trump cranked up his calliope proclaiming to the audience he had drawn “a much bigger crowd than Bruce Springsteen. Right?”
CBS News proclaimed that Trump’s one day appearance at Wildwood had ushered “in an economic boom” in the Cape May county town.
“The story is a gift to the Trump campaign, and a peerless propaganda victory in an environment in which momentum and intensity are critical factors,” wrote anti-Trump Steve Schmidt, who advised Sen. John McCain. “The fantastical number is now ‘real.’ Speaker Mike Johnson tweeted about it too (as an aside, big numbers are a challenge for Johnson, who believes Earth is 6,000 years old and people and dinosaurs lived happily together). It has the double effect of intimidating Biden supporters, and simultaneously disaffecting them. How could it not? Immense rallies — even imagined ones — can have a profound psychological effect.”
By Monday, the New York Times was asserting Trump was leading President Biden “in five crucial battleground states, a new set of polls shows, as a yearning for change and discontent over the economy and the war in Gaza among young, Black and Hispanic voters threaten to unravel the president’s Democratic coalition.”
The Times continued. “The surveys by The New York Times, Siena College and The Philadelphia Inquirer found that Mr. Trump was ahead among registered voters in a head-to-head matchup against Mr. Biden in five of six key states: Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and Pennsylvania. Mr. Biden led among registered voters in only one battleground state, Wisconsin.
Headed into the 2024 election, every American needs to up to the challenge of authenticating the news that they use to inform how they vote. After a generation of newspaper, cable and broadcast consolidation and layoffs news gathering has taken a major hit.
Truth and facts matter now more than ever.
We are in treacherous territory when the House of Representatives is controlled by a caucus that the overwhelming majority of whom broke their oath office voting NOT to certify the election of President Biden AFTER the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol at the instigation of former President Trump.
This same junta is now taking turns trying to subvert the rule of law by trying to delegitimize the ongoing New York State court proceedings in which former President Trump is a criminal defendant.
This is more like an ongoing insurrection and subversion of the rule of law rooted in twisting reality to validate Trump’s delusion that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
The essential question is how we know what we know because ‘the reliable sources’ we’ve always counted on historically appear to be buckling under as they cover this election as just another horse race.

2024.05.19 22:54 skr4wek Rumors / discussion etc about Giuseppe Andrews over the last decade or so

I thought it might be useful to lay out some of the more credible sounding comments and discussion I've seen around "the end" of Giuseppe's career and his disappearance. Nothing here is "officially verified", but I think there's a fair bit of truth in a lot of the information here, and might help point anyone who's interested in the right direction to a better understanding of his story. I've included the ones that make more sense to me/ reflect my own knowledge of the situation.
Giuseppe was living around Canandaigua, NY towards the end, staying with Mary's parents in her childhood home for a period, after they both had left Austin for unknown reasons. I would imagine the reasons would have likely been mental health and/ or money related for both of them (he was approximately 36 years old, at this point). Mary was still shipping movies out for a while around this time - the last order I placed on the website myself was November of 2014 and ended up emailing back a couple weeks later, because she had never sent me any information about receiving the order / shipping it out, in contrast to all earlier orders I had placed. She replied pretty quick though, and told me she had shipped it out earlier - it arrived about a week after. The return address was her parent's place in upper state NY.
Giuseppe's output got increasingly erratic and bizarre over the next couple years, and I wasn't really sure if half the items he was selling there were even real... they would have completely nonsensical descriptions, often like a free association / shitty "beat poetry" kind of thing, usually in all caps, featuring lots of bizarre and offensive language (racial slurs, AIDS references, etc), and the products listed were often things like a "3 minute DVD" for 20 dollars, so I was pretty skeptical / really didn't have much interest. He'd announce a ridiculous amount of new material, I'm talking like 5 new movies and 5 albums every week... The last order I made was for a few of the Austin films and I really didn't enjoy them, and more or less lost interest in any future projects at this point. I would still check periodically just to see what he was posting to the site, just out of curiosity / because a lot of it was really out there. He used to have audio samples for his "albums", and he almost exclusively was posting CDs of him ranting (with a ton of very weird throat clearing and coughing, it almost seemed like a Tourettes thing). His site went down somewhere between March 23, 2017 and July 3, 2017 according to Internet Archive. I can't remember exactly when he stopped adding new items, but it was probably sometime in early 2017.
He was clearly living in and around Canandaigua for a while, for at least 2-3 years, maybe even longer...
February 2017 - a twitter account called "HELP GIUSEPPE" was created and made three posts:
@ thecampaignbook Shia, G.A just came into my local bar needing help. he was stressin bad. hes in canandaigua NY and just stormed out of here
@ AdamRifkin G.A just stormed into my local bar, made it half way through the set up of this account and stormed out. needing you it seems.
@ EdwardNorton Giuseppe Andrews just came into my local bar very alarmed/needing a friend and help.
July 5, 2020 - a YouTube video entitled "What Happened to Giuseppe Andrews? A Short Investigation" is posted, some of the comments that were posted include:
(approx: 2021) I live in a small town called Carlin.. it’s literally 24 miles from Elko Nevada.. back in may of 2019 I was working at a small casino.. Giuseppe would often frequent the casino.. I worked the graveyard shift so it was mostly quiet.. he was polite and even remembered my name and would always ask me how I was.. I was able to get him to take a selfie with him and he even drew some artwork for me.. he told me that I could sell the artwork if I wanted to and fetch a decent price for it.. my husband and I were in the process of buying our first house and I told him no I would frame it and it would be proudly displayed.. he almost started tearing up..I’d happily upload the photo if YouTube would let me..
The same commenter also mentioned, responding to a comment about Detroit Rock City: yeah that was a good movie.. it’s really sad how his life played out.. he told me some sad tales of what he went through
> In early 2018 a man rang my doorbell in Canandaigua, NY. He was disheveled and seemed out of it***. He started yelling at me “I am Giuseppe Andrews, a Hollywood actor. I need you to call the police. “ I was startled and a little afraid but I told him to wait outside and I went in and called 911. He waited on my lawn and the police arrived in about 5 minutes. He spoke to the police in the car and then walked away. I don’t really live within walking distance of anywhere so not sure where he was going. I tried to obtain info from the police about what was going on but was not told anything. Has remained a mystery all these years later and I think people ( other than my neighbors who witnessed it) don’t believe me when I tell the story. Strange but 100% true.***
Some other interesting comments from various accounts, talking about the last stuff he was posting publicly:
> On his YouTube before he start d doing 13 albums in 2 weeks, his gf released a video a bunch of videos that was 4 or 5 hours long of him ranting on a couch with a guy. I think she was documenting it. I wish I would of downloaded it.
> And the next day it was all gone the footage, I have signed copys of DVDs and posters and shit he sent me in the mail.
(A reply from another commenter) - I remember he went on a long rant about various people in Hollywood and whatnot. Someone mentioned him having schizophrenia/paranoia, and while I'm in no way a psychologist or medical professional, it did seem like things were getting progressively more bizarre and unhinged. Given how creative and abstract he was when he initially started with his film making and music, I think it masked what was actually going on ( whether it was drug use, the onset of some sort of mental illness, or a mix of the two ). Earlier on he was still eccentric but seemed more lucid and driven with what he was doing.
> From what I've gathered (also a fan from DRC and Cabin Fever) his mother committed him to an institution and when released, he went to live with his mother. The twitter chick claims to be his fiancé now and he's no longer with Mary. But who knows.
It would turn out that Andrews also suffers from some very severe issues. Having chatted with his mother Giuseppegirl informed me that he has recently been placed in a mental health facility and has begun a 6 month stint in there where he has no access to the internet or anyone other than family members. He had a break up with his wife Mary Beth, who appears in a lot of his films, so it's possible that this is what put him over the edge. I've talked with Adam Rifkin who says he has some of Giuseppe's rarer films, but hasn't talked with the man for a few years now. That's as far as I have gotten in the rabbit hole.
A bigger YouTube channel made a video about Giuseppe's disappearance, titled "What Happened to Giuseppe Andrews? Internet Mysteries", posted Nov. 11, 2021:
(this commenter is different from account who made the earlier comment about ringing the doorbell in NY):
This dude showed up at my parents house 3 years ago in the middle of the night, asking for help and saying he needed to be let in. Absolutely no way was that happening. Long story short we found out after the fact that he was a character in Detroit Rock City & American History X some of my favorite movies
The last video of him I saw was a crazed rant of him yelling about censorship of art. He was real angry and cursing in a vlog style video. I think some people were criticizing him for use of racist language in his films I’m not exactly sure but I saw snippets of his rant and then the video was taken down a month later along with everything else.
1 year ago:
> He currently lives in Elko Nevada after having a schizophrenic break he still lives with his loving mother part time and she takes care of him. I see him around town a lot and only recently found out that he is Giuseppe Andrews. I can answer most questions if you’re curious.
There was also an interesting thread about 4 years ago, on a different subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/RedLetterMedia/comments/gal55x/giuseppe_andrews/
A few of the more interesting remarks:
After his California days he spent a few years around Austin making films that mostly just starred himself and his wife Mary. Some of these are really good but his minimalism and experimentation are pushed to the limits here. Some are absolute garbage. After this there was a short stint in upstate New York with this same kind of limited style. Shortly into this cycle things for weird then he disappeared. Right before he disappeared he was posting a lot of troublesome content and releasing TONS of music and films with nonsensical names like "fffff" which would be followed up with "fffffffff". I haven't seen any of this stuff.
> I remember the New York era where things kinda went off the deep end. He released a lot of content where he talked a lot. There was quite a few where he would mention that he was desperately trying to reach out to John Frusciante
Has anyone else stumbled across any comments out there, that support this general narrative / add additional context, or perhaps give reason to believe something a bit different? In particular, towards the end with his site and the long drawn out "spoken word albums" / posts he would make? I listened to some of the audio samples when they were on the site years ago and some of it was unbelievably weird, like he was in a totally dissociated state, talking to people who weren't actually there. There were a couple specific celebrities he was "talking to" quite often, John Frusciante was one for sure, and another guitar player from a relatively small band I can't remember now (I looked them up at the time and thought it was particularly weird, as they were like a small time college rock band who had broken up years prior).
One thing I do remember quite distinctly was I was quite surprised when a shot of Giuseppe on a playground with a man and woman in upper state NY was posted to Instagram, a short while after his website went down. If I remember correctly, they were musicians and the caption said something to the effect that he was helping them film a video. At this point I thought he was more or less completely out of it based on what he'd been posting to his website, so I was really surprised that he had connected with some strangers to actually do something like that, but I don't believe there was ever any follow up posts. I haven't been able to find that post since, if anyone ever remembers seeing that, and who the couple were that would be unbelievably helpful to me!
From the bits and pieces that have come out, I feel like I can stitch together a bit of an understanding of how things might have gone down over the last decade, but a lot is still very speculative to an extent. I'm really curious if anyone out there can corroborate some of these stories in any way, or add any additional information!

2024.05.19 19:55 IlexIbis Nevada Road Trip Questions

Nevada Road Trip Questions
In June or July I intend to fly into Las Vegas, rent a vehicle, and explore your state for 7-10 days. I'm mainly interested in the scenic/secluded/historic/"old Nevada" areas and not the big city amusements.
I'll have some minimal camping equipment with me (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag) and would like to do a mix of camping and staying in hotels but want to keep it flexible day-to-day.
The below is a preliminary route idea but I'm wondering if I'm missing out not visiting the more northerly part of the state.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
EDIT: So many great suggestions and feedback, I really appreciate y'all!

2024.05.19 19:50 doggo_bestie List of things to do with your kids this summer.

I noticed a lot of people are starting to look for things to do with their kids for the summer. I just finished this list and thought I’d share. Took me 3 hours. I’m sure it’s not comprehensive, feel free to add anything you see missing. Keep in mind, this list was made for a 6-year-old autistic child, and I was trying to avoid outdoor stuff and touristy strip stuff, although some made it on the list. Also, sorry for the bad handwriting.

2024.05.19 19:25 Aerosynth929 41m/41m Fun Gay Couple in Vegas, Baby! (General Penpals/Friendship)

I don't really know where to start here. Haha. I guess the reason I'm in this sub is that at the end of the day, I like to WRITE. I like to exchange well thought out messages and spend time writing and thinking about them. I like the idea of penpals. I guess for now I'd just like to meet some cool, fun new people who like to talk and share via email.
My partner and I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. We're both 41 years old. We are both a ton of fun. I'm super into EDM music and festivals. My partner is super into Legos. We travel all over the world, love to go out and eat at all the fun new restaurants here, like to go hiking and take our boat to the river and lake. We're very adventurous. I work in marketing and he works in real estate.
Life in Vegas isn't what we envisioned it would be when we moved here for work several years ago. It's good, maybe even better than we thought it would be - but different. Funny how adulthood throws you curve balls, huh? Three months after we moved to Nevada, we discovered that my mother (in her 60s at the time) had developed dementia. She could no longer live alone at her home in the Midwest, and had to come to live with us. So very quickly we found ourselves in caretaker roles and unable to go out to clubs, bars, date nights, romantic getaways... things like that... where you'd normally become acquainted with people. My mother has issues being by herself for long periods of time, so comes most places with us... and even though she's lots of fun, it does limit our ability to make new connections. Meeting new people here has been a little hard.
I don't really know what I am looking for out of this, just someone to chat with about life, work, philosophy - whatever. If you want to turn it into a RL friendship, that's cool too... but it would ultimately be a friendship with both of us. Some of our best friends and some my own lifelong friendships have started out in online forums like this one.
You don't have to be a gay couple, or even gay. I'm pretty much open to writing back and forth with anyone as long as you're chill and can hold a conversation.
Just hit me up if you're bored and any of that resounds with you.

2024.05.19 13:21 Federal_Machine692 I work as a security guard in a secret government facility, and this is what happened (Part 1)

Buster growled softly, baring his teeth at me as he stood in defiance. His stance rigid and unyielding, his tail stiff, and ears pinned back - he watched my every move with alert eyes.
My 3-year-old German shepherd had intuitively figured out the prospect of an upcoming bath when he saw me reach for the towel, and decided to give me a hard time over it.
“I know buddy. I am not happy about it either. But I will make it quick. I promise,” I tried to reason, holding up both hands to reassure him.
‘But it’s not even been a week…’ I could almost imagine him saying those exact words to me when he growled back in protest.
“You’re right...But listen, man. You’re dirty. I can feel your presence from here,” I said, standing ten feet away and pretending to cover my nostrils with my finger.
Buster, of course, didn’t care and continued to defy without hesitation.
I put my hands on my hip and sighed. My glance immediately shifted to a hose attached to a tap outside my quarters.
“Tell you what. I’ll make it worth your while. You don’t mind the jet spray, right? In fact, you even tolerate it sometimes,” I said, pointing to the hose located only a few feet away.
“How about a little cooperation now, and I’ll make you your favorite meal a little later?” I asked him, while reaching out to pick a can of chicken liver from the kitchen.
As I dangled the can in my hand, I could see it slowly chipping away at his resolve, his mind grappling with the pros and cons of my new proposal.
A moment later, Buster barked at me twice and slowly made his way out of the house. He sat by the garden tap, ready to receive his bath.
I took a handful of lotion and began to rub it against his torso to remove all the muck and grime that was sticking to his body. We had been quite busy lately, guarding the base and conducting multiple patrols along the perimeter every day. The rain a few hours ago certainly didn't help matters, with Buster leaping over puddles of water and actively rolling in the mud to escape the desert heat. I had to use a brush to remove the layers of dirt that had caked all over his body.
It’s been a strange week, to say the least. The days were busy but peaceful, while the nights brought scattered, random sounds. Their origins were a mystery, as they appeared not to originate from the base. But I wasn’t too worried about it, not yet anyway.
There is an air base located a couple of hours away from the facility, and it wasn’t unusual for them to conduct sorties at odd hours in the night. I assumed they were probably testing out some new technology.
My colleague Joe thought the same thing as well. But we couldn’t take any chances, and we both had a job to do. So we conducted regular patrols around the base just as a precautionary measure.
But deep down, I felt something nagging at me, like I was being watched by someone or something. I couldn’t exactly put it into words.
For a second, I wondered if Buster too felt the same way when I saw him suddenly lift his head up, listening intently with his ears up in attention.
I quickly turned back to check if there was anybody standing behind me, but I found no one. When I turned around to face him again, I saw him looking up at the night sky, his gaze focused and unwavering.
“What’s it buddy? You see something?” I asked him as I cleared away the foam from his face. Moments went by slowly. And then, just like that, as if nothing had happened, he put his head down and began pawing my leg, urging me to finish his bath. I sighed again and turned on the hose, to wash off all the soap.
He finally looked presentable and I have to admit, his coat glistened beautifully under the moonlight.
Before I could reach for his towel, Buster swiftly moved in to close the gap between us and looked me in the eye dead serious. He then shook his body vigorously, much like a wet dog trying to rid itself of wetness, and trotted off without bothering to look back.
I laughed out loud as I sat there, drenched in water. I knew I should have seen that coming. However, my smile quickly faded, as it also reminded me of Jessica, my ailing wife.
Before another thought could take shape in my mind, I heard a familiar voice blare across the radio.
“Mike, I need you down here. Get to the post quick.”
It was my colleague Joe and I replied back in the affirmative. I quickly grabbed my gear and signaled Buster to follow after me.
When I reached the post, I saw Joe standing there armed with his rifle. As a seasoned war veteran with two tours under his belt, Joe was a dangerous man and not to be trifled with. But he was also compassionate and wise beyond his years.
“What’s up Joe?” I inquired, as I approached him near the entrance of the base.
“I am not sure yet. I thought I heard something at a distance. It could well be nothing.” he replied, after a brief pause.
‘Well, we’ve had a lot of that going around all week’, I thought to myself.
He then turned around to look at me. “I want you to run a perimeter sweep first. Then go on patrol again. Take Buster with you” he said, before heading back to his post.
I started the jeep and drove out towards the perimeter. The engine hummed softly as I navigated the rough terrain, with Buster sitting alertly beside me. After finding nothing suspicious during my initial sweep, I decided to broaden my search radius.
A mile into the drive, Buster suddenly started barking, prompting me to stop the jeep immediately. He leaped onto the ground and dashed towards a boulder located a short distance away. I picked up my rifle and cautiously followed after him.
When I reached the spot, I keyed the mic attached to my shirt and said, "Boss, you need to come see this."
I knew he wasn’t going to be happy about leaving the guard post unmanned, but I thought he would prefer to come and inspect this himself.
Joe arrived ten minutes later, parking his vehicle next to mine. He walked towards the boulder overlooking a small pond, and switched on his torch to get a better look at the skeletal remains of an animal dumped nearby. Three other animal remains lay next to it, all appearing to be in a similar condition.
“These look like coyotes, probably stopping by to drink water from the pond before they were killed,” he observed, his voice expressing concern. “Did you find them like this?”
“Yes”, I replied. “And they weren’t here when I drove through the same place this morning. I thought it was quite odd to be honest, to find four of them out here all at once in the middle of the desert, that too at this hour.”
Joe simply nodded in agreement.
“What sort of creature do you think did this Joe?”
“I mean it must have a ravenous appetite to chew every sinew of flesh from the bone, and lick it this clean.” I said, leaning in take another look.
“Do you think it could be the Chupacabra or something similar?” I continued, knowing fully well my question was a bit far-fetched, but I had to still get it off my chest.
Joe finally stood up, switched off his torch, and looked around the vast open desert in quiet contemplation.
“This is in fact the fifth sighting in less than a week, Mike, and all have occurred in close proximity to secure government installations. The one before this was even stranger, and happened near a military base, where an old buddy of mine continues to serve.”
“He told me in that instance, the remains belonged to a dog. There were no signs of flesh or connecting tissue from the nasal region to the abdominal section, while the region spanning from the abdominal cavity to the tail bone was left fully intact. The whole thing was carried out with surgical precision, and drew morbid praise from even the medic back at the base.”
"But how is that even possible? What are you suggesting, Joe?" I asked, surprised by the tone of my own voice and my inability to hide my disappointment upon hearing about it for the first time.
“This is not a hunt for prey, Mike. This is a hunt for attention. Somebody is trying to make a point. And I’d say they are accomplishing their objective.” Joe said.
When we got back to the base, Joe updated the command centre about the new developments. I headed back to my quarters and lay down on my bed. The exhaustion washed over me and I immediately drifted to sleep.
I looked at my Mickey Mouse watch. The time was 5:36 PM. I was licking my ice cream while sitting next to my mom in the car. To my right, was my 4 year old cousin Henry who was fast asleep on his mother’s lap.
In the front, my dad was driving the car with his brother seated next to him. Then a truck from the opposite side suddenly came in our lane, and rammed into our vehicle causing it to turn turtle.
With great difficulty, I managed to extricate myself and pulled my cousin out from the wreckage as well. And then suddenly, the car exploded and went up in flames….
I opened my eyes and realized I was still in bed. The same dream had come and gone a thousand times before. It has become a constant part of my life ever since I was a 9-year-old kid.
I slowly got off the bed and found my head hurting. I had barely slept since last night’s excitement, and my mood was already beginning to turn foul.
Buster was already awake. I gently patted him on the head as I walked into the kitchen to put a kettle of water on the boil, and turned on the TV.
My attention immediately shifted towards the news. There was a nuclear explosion in Russia in a small town that was just a couple of hours away from Moscow. The details regarding the explosion were still shrouded in speculation.
“Just the kind of news to start the day,”I groaned as I reached for a nearby chair in the kitchen.
‘But what could have caused this?’ I thought to myself a little later, and hoped the damage there was minimal.
I then looked at the clock and set about getting ready for work. I showered, ate my breakfast, and was out the door by 8, with a hot cup of coffee in hand. Buster raced ahead to get to the guard post.
Joe had already completed his shift, and was waiting for me to relieve him of his duties. We high-fived as usual, and he began to walk back to his quarters. I settled into my chair, and made an entry in the logbook.
My name is Michael Armesto, a 30-year-old security guard working for a secret government installation located in an obscure area in the hot Nevada desert. The facility is centered around a medium-sized building occupying 7,000 square feet of space.
A 10-meter-high wired fence had been erected around the base to provide added protection. There was nothing else around the facility for miles, with the exception of a few boulder fields and mountains in the distance.
For over 5 years now, my colleague Joe and I have been working in shifts to ensure the guard post is manned at all times. When compared to other secret government bases, the security requirements here are not as stringent. And yet, neither Joe nor I ever had any clue about the kind of work being done here.
Every day, like clockwork, a bus carrying 25 people would arrive at the facility at 9:00 AM sharp. I had to open the gates to let them through, once the customary security checks were performed.
These people always wore lab coats and looked like scientists. They would work in the facility until 5:00 PM, and leave by the same bus at the end of the day. In all that time, they never once smiled or waved at me. It was as if their bosses had strictly informed them to not even initiate eye contact with people outside their circle.
Anyway, I never took offense to any of that. My job was to provide security to the facility, and I was doing that to the best of my ability.
As I sat back in my chair, ready to take another sip of coffee, my phone began to ring. It was from the hospital, and I answered it. A minute later, I called Joe and asked him to stand in for me. He immediately understood.
When he arrived at the guard post, I apologized for the inconvenience and Joe simply nodded with a reassuring smile.
As I was about to climb into my jeep, I pointed my finger at Buster and said, “STAY.”.
“Take him with you Mike. She will be happy to see him” Joe said quickly intervening.
“But Boss, I don’t want to leave you here alone after last night.” I protested.
Joe waved his hand dismissively. “Get going Mike. That’s an order.”
“And don’t worry about me. I’ll be fine. Go see Jess and tell her I am rooting for her,” he said, before walking back to the guard post.
I put a leash on Buster and climbed into the jeep with him. I started the vehicle and began driving towards the city to check on my wife Jessica. She was receiving treatment for lung cancer at St Mary’s Hospital, which was a 5 hour drive from the base.
Jess had never smoked once in her life, and for her to go through all this hardship really broke my heart. I would have normally liked to stay by her side during this crisis, but I could not afford the cost of treatment on my own. Thankfully, the insurance from my government job so far helped me cover most of the medical expenses.
After arriving at the hospital, I headed straight to her room and found her with tubes attached to her mouth. She was heavily sedated and looked like she was in pain.
Buster was standing by the door looking glum. He could see that Jess was unwell. Buster came into my life as a surprise birthday gift from Jess, and he has been a part of our family ever since. The people working at the hospital regularly allowed him inside the premises, knowing fully well that his presence always helped to uplift her spirits.
I came to know from the doctor that Jess had suffered a heart attack due to long term COVID complications. While she was stable and out of danger for now, she did need to undergo an emergency surgery within the next 3 days. The surgery alone would cost $30,000, and that was not covered by my insurance policy.
I pulled Buster by the leash to tell him it was time to go, but he kept resisting. He wanted to sit by her side for some time, even though she was unconscious and unable to acknowledge his presence. So, I too pulled up a chair and sat beside him. It immediately brought back happy memories of our marriage.
We used to spend our summers going on long drives, visiting natural parks, or idly sitting by the beach, enjoying good food and playing all kinds of sports. Jess and I would also often embark on scenic routes, with no particular destination in mind, allowing the road to guide us towards hidden gems.
Whether it's a visit to a historic village or a hike through a lush green forest, all the shared experiences helped strengthen our bond as a family.
The two of us also enjoyed using Buster to pull pranks on each other. Whenever Jess gave him a bath, she would command Buster to go ‘Shake’ in front of me and I would get drenched in water, leading to fits of laughter all around. It was one of her favorite pranks.
So when I saw my wife on the bed with tubes attached to her mouth, I got the reality check I needed. I stood up from my chair and yanked harder at his leash; he didn’t resist this time and followed after me.
I walked out of the hospital feeling a bit dazed. As I started to drive back to the base, my mind was busy trying to come up with solutions. I had only $2000 in my bank account, and that clearly wasn’t enough.
‘Maybe I could contact an official from the government and apply for a loan?’ I thought to myself. I kept driving while mulling on the best course of action.
Then, at a certain point, I suddenly snapped to my senses and immediately stopped the car. I had been driving for over 4 hours now. It was 7 in the evening, and night had already fallen.
Yet, I could not spot the base in the distance. Usually, by this time, the floodlights would have been turned on, and the facility would be easily visible for miles.
Instead, all I could see up ahead was pitch-black darkness. Something was wrong.
I tried calling Joe on his phone, but he was unreachable. I pressed the gas pedal and drove as fast as I could.
When I finally reached the facility, the situation looked much worse than I had feared. The entrance gate was left half open, with no one manning the guard post. The entire building just sat there in the darkness with no power. I tried calling on Joe’s number again. No response.
I then called Joe’s boss, who was stationed in Carson City, to inform him of the situation and possibly request reinforcements. He was unreachable as well.
‘What on earth is going on?’ I asked myself. This was completely bewildering on so many levels.
I slowly drove up to the base, and stopped the jeep a short distance away from the front gate. I wanted to be able to make a quick exit, if things turned hostile. I took a torch light from the dashboard and unfastened my sidearm from the holster. After getting down from the vehicle, I softly whistled towards Buster to follow me.
When I walked past the gate and checked the guard post, I saw a body lying face down on the floor. From a distance, it was difficult to identify the person clearly, but as I got closer I recognized Joe’s uniform. I ran towards him and turned him around and got the shock of my life. I stumbled back in fear and hit the floor hard.
I don’t know what they did to Joe.
But he was lying there dead! Very dead!
It was like he had been zapped or electrocuted. The only thing that was remaining of him was his skeleton. Not an ounce of flesh was visible on his body. And yet his uniform looked in pristine condition.
‘How is this even possible?’ I asked myself.
It immediately reminded me of the dead coyotes I found on patrol the previous night.
“Could this all be somehow related? Was this an execution? And was this carried out be the same group of people?” I wondered.
Joe’s rifle was still there, leaning against the wall. I holstered my sidearm and picked up his rifle. I checked the magazine. He hadn’t fired a single shot.
I then turned on the tactical light and started moving towards the government facility. No one could enter this building until they had a high level of clearance, and every person who had clearance, was issued an electronic key card to gain access. So I was shocked to see the door was left ajar here as well.
Before entering, I headed back to check the junction box. The darkness was making me paranoid and I wanted to see if there was anything I could do to fix it first. When I reached the box, I discovered that the power had been deliberately shut down.
I turned it back on, and the entire place lit up like a Christmas tree.
But the whole facility wore a deserted look. The bus that was usually used to ferry the scientists was still parked at the parking lot.
I doubled back towards the entrance, and slowly entered the building with my rifle pointed forward. This was the first time I was setting foot inside the facility. And if this was supposed to be a top research lab, I wasn’t seeing any signs of it.
The place had been hastily evacuated. There was not a single soul in sight. All I could see was waste paper and computer cables strewn across the floor. Everything else had been cleared out.
Buster then took off on his own, and dashed towards the far end of the building. Something had caught his fancy and I followed after him. He stopped against a large couch and started barking at me.
I looked down and could see something metallic hidden underneath. I stretched my hand to retrieve an aluminum briefcase with blood stains all over it. Someone was obviously holding onto it for dear life, and then tossed it underneath as a last ditch attempt to prevent it from getting into the wrong hands.
‘Did the scientists manage to escape? Or did something bad happen to them, like it happened to Joe?’
‘Could the nuclear explosion in Russia have something to do with this?’
“Are the two countries about to go to war? Is this to be viewed as an escalation,” I wondered.
A hundred questions were going through my mind now, and I had answers to none of them.
I decided to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible. I saw no point in staying, now that Joe was dead and the facility had also been cleared out. I ran back to my jeep, tossed the briefcase in the backseat, and began my drive back to the nearest city I could think of.
Twenty minutes into the drive, I began to get curious about the briefcase, and I had to stop the car to take a look. I switched on the light in my vehicle and opened the briefcase. There was some kind of a telescope inside.
On its base, it bore the insignia of a bright burning Sun with a single eye at it’s center. It also had a name tag attached to it that was labelled Korelo ZX4 – 1969.
The telescope in itself was a strange looking contraption, the likes of which I had never seen before. It was the size of a camcorder, and comfortably fit within the palm of my hand.
There were two identical knobs on either side of the device. The one on the left moved freely clockwise or counter clockwise. It felt similar to those old radio transistors, where you could switch back and forth between stations.
The knob on the right looked the same but had a small pointer attached to it. It had limited range of motion and worked like a switch. Close to the pointer were 3 printed dots, one larger than the other in ascending order. I guess this signified the 3 levels in which this device functioned.
I held the telescope gently in my hand and peered into the eyepiece. With the moon being the only source of light in the desert, I could hardly spot a thing. I then turned the knob on the right, and the device immediately roared to life. I could even feel it mildly vibrating in my hand.
As I peered into the eyepiece again, I now had clear vision of the space all around me. A green display had opened up and was providing clean imagery with stunning levels of detail. I slowly started to turn the knob on the left, and the telescope began to zoom in and out.
I could now clearly see the creatures of the desert ….miles away… coming out their holes …looking for prey. Their heat signatures capturing perfectly… the contours of their own bodies as they moved swiftly across the sand.
As I kept zooming in further, I could also spot the local diner of the nearest town that was more than 50 miles away. I could not only figure out the make and model of cars parked in front of the restaurant, but also read the number plates on them.
And then I looked upwards, pointing the telescope at the night sky, hoping to see the stars a little more clearly. And suddenly everything became obscure. It was like staring at a blank wall.
I moved the telescope away looking confused. Everything looked normal. There was an abundance of stars scattered across the sky, and there were hardly any clouds. I looked into the telescope again, and started zooming back, and my heart suddenly skipped a beat.
Thousands of feet high up in the sky, a large spaceship was hovering mid-air. It was big enough to accommodate an entire football field. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest as I just kept staring at it for several moments.
Then I slowly began to pan the telescope across the skyline, and soon realized that I was in for an even bigger shock! There were at least two more spaceships thousands of miles away. Make no mistake. They were clearly visible as the one I was standing in front of.
‘Ok Mike, What else you got?’ I said out loud to myself.
I then turned my focus back to the ship in front of me, and turned the right knob again.
The second dot got highlighted on screen, and the telescope suddenly zoomed in to reveal the insides of the spaceship.
The unfolding images were a little grainy but still definitive enough to provide sufficient visual quality. It was like an X-ray, CT scan and MRI all rolled into one. As I kept adjusting the left knob to get a clearer visual, I could see a large workstation occupying most of the space inside the ship.
Close to the panel, two people were standing and conversing with each other. They did not look human at all. In fact, they looked like aliens!
By this point, I was already sweating even as the cool winds of the desert were hitting my face, and ruffling my hair. I continued to stare into the telescope completely transfixed. I turned the right knob one more time.
The last big dot got highlighted on screen, and then I suddenly started hearing weird noises. Buster who was keeping silent all this while, let out a soft howl and dug his face into the sand. But the noises didn’t stop. It sounded odd and animal like. Like the garbled speech of someone attempting to speak with a mouthful of water. I realized I was now eavesdropping on the aliens talking amongst themselves.
I think they figured this out as well. Because one of them abruptly stopped speaking, and walked towards a work station, and then punched something on the console.
In a matter of moments, the other alien turned around and took a step forward in my direction. It looked like he was peering down at me, fully aware of my existence. A wry smile appeared on his lips, and I felt a shiver go down my spine.
I immediately switched off the telescope, put it back in the briefcase and ran towards my jeep. Buster followed after me. I decided to get to the nearest town and drove as fast as I could.

2024.05.19 10:54 bazengamkubwa Fish & Chips Wash Wash?

During a visit to town I noticed a lot of chips restaurants in town named after American states (Nevada, Tennessee, Arizona, Manhattan etc) and most if not all do not accept anything other than cash.
Do you guys know why they don’t take Mpesa? Could it be a wash wash strategy?
