2024.06.02 18:16 JohnBierce Writing Advice: Economic Progression Fantasy

Progression Fantasy is still a very young subgenre, so I think it fair to forgive it a few growing pains, but...
It's got an economics problem. A real economics problem.
Namely: While there have been quite a few attempts at writing economic progression fantasy, where the MC progresses not just in personal power, but in economic strength (wealth, etc)- remarkably few of them impress me. In fact, the only one that I will outright declare a win is Kyle Kirrin's Shadeslinger. (Which, I should note, is not an attempt to build a functioning "real" economy, but instead to build a functioning videogame economy- a challenging task of its own, and one Kirrin does fantastic at for the purposes of his narrative.) (Also Frank is the best, long live Frank.)
Now, I've hardly exhausted the whole of economic progression fantasy, there's tons of examples I haven't read- but the failed attempts I have read, numbering quite a few, tend to have some fairly similar failure states. (I won't name any of them- I don't generally like speaking ill of other living authors' works,just their politics.)
This is of especial interest to me because I'm literally in the midst of writing an economic progression fantasy. I enjoy reading and writing this stuff! (Though, I should be clear, my upcoming series does not have a commerce-based progression plot- rather, it has a magic system deeply integrated into its economy. Also, it's socialist sword and sorcery.)
So here's a non-exhaustive list of failure states for writing economic progression fantasy, and tips for writing good economic progression fantasy/litrpg. And, while I'm very much a socialist and anti-capitalist, this advice is intended to be useful to anyone writing economic PF, regardless if they share my political and economic leanings. (Though I'm still gonna trash-talk capitalism a bunch lol.) And remember: I call them pitfalls, not rules, because these are not things you're forbidden to do, these are things that are harder to do.
Pitfalls:

Trying to write the protagonist's organization like a startup, the whole series: Startups can only behave like startups while they're small. Once a company gets big, attempts to continue functioning like a startup will just make the whole thing crash and burn. When you're small, just going "oh, Richard down the hall knows how to fix that" works fine. Once an organization grows in size, Richard down the hall cannot fix the issue for hundreds or thousands of people- there need to be standards and practices in place. And unfortunately, the transition between small agile startup and robust, reliable large business is a REALLY tough one to navigate, and is a spot where corporations frequently fail. This difficulty unfortunately extends to writing about the transition as well- something not helped by an absolutely ridiculous culture of praising startup values at levels ranging from the large mature corporations to schools to national governments! (I blame the VC industry for this silliness- they were largely responsible for an ecosystem where startups could wholly concern themselves with making themselves look good for potential buyers among the large tech firms, rather than care about profitability in any way, shape, or form. This silliness then spread, and... ugh, don't get me on a rant about VCs, it's a stupid industry full of stupid investors who are investing other people's money (often from pension funds) and getting disproportionate rewards on their rare few wins, while being sheltered from their losses, all while ignoring actual due diligence.)
Trying to write capitalism into a pseudomedieval setting: Medieval Europe was not capitalist, full stop. It was a feudal economy with its own distinct economic systems, often of shocking complexity and international scope. Do you need an accurate medieval economy in your progression fantasy? Probably not, it would be a lot of work to adequately explain it to your readers while logically modifying it to the demands of your magic system. At the same time, however, importing capitalism is a much more demanding challenge, because it relies on certain technologies and social structures that tend to be absent from pseudomedieval fantasy. (I'm importing capitalism into my current pseudomedieval work, but I'm doing it purposefully, and knowing what I'm doing, with a strong (at least for a layman) understanding of both capitalism and medieval economies.
Mistaking commerce for capitalism: When you go to the corner shop and buy a soda, you're not engaging in capitalism, you're engaging in commerce. In fact, most of use do not actively engage in capitalism in our day to day, though we often act as cogs in it. When I write a book, it's not capitalism, it's labor. When I buy lunch, it's not capitalism, it's commerce. Defining capitalism positively is a trickier endeavor, but generally speaking, you can see it as leveraging capital- high value goods that amplify labor value, like industrial machinery, real estate, or some intellectual property.
Going too fast in the late stages: Lotta economic PF and LitRPG picks up the pace of economic growth after a slow initial start, which... just doesn't feel right. Large scale expansion is difficult and slow in the real world, and is a much different challenge than the early stages.
Insufficient delegation: A PF MC that doesn't delegate in their economic organization as it gets large is gonna fail hard, and if they don't and somehow still succeed, it's not gonna read right to readers familiar with economics or the function of large firms.
Treating economic systems as too stable, especially capitalism: Economic systems screw up on the REGULAR, almost regardless of system. Having an economic system that's just been stable for centuries (hell, for decades) is deeply unrealistic. (Capitalism is especially prone to this, love it or hate it. (You should hate it.) Both socialist and capitalist analyses of capitalism tend to center on crises of capitalism, for good reason. Keynsian economics (or as left and right wingers alike enjoy calling it, for different reasons, Socialism Lite), is almost entirely built around strategies for avoiding, minimizing, and recovering from crises of capitalism.)
Falling for the Tragedy of the Commons: Look, coordination problems are damn tricky, and a lot of communities have failed at commons management. It's a real challenge with real failure states! But the Tragedy of the Commons in its modern form? Was completely non-empirical, just a bullshit thought experiment white nationalist Garret Hardin made up to advocate for eugenics. There are PLENTY of clever ways small communities manage to share common resources- in fact, this was basically how medieval economics worked! Villages shared most of their grazing land and much of their agricultural land, and had shared common coppicing rights in local forests. (With variances for region and feudal system.) The lords were very seldom managing peasants in their fields. (Why would they want to?) If you want to deep-dive into how small to mid-sized communities can safely manage their economic commons, I highly recommend Elinor Ostrom's Nobel-winning book (For Nobel in Economics values of Nobel) Governing the Commons.
Power scaling wrong: Wealth is power. Any power you give a character in progression fantasy? You gotta take into account when giving them challenges, so you have them at the power level you want them. Lotta folks slip on this one.
Having protagonists make money too easily: A lot of protagonists- especially isekai protagonists- just wander into a pseudomedieval society with an absolutely bottom shelf business idea and get filthy rich with it, to the point where it's kind of absurd how easy it is for them. You really think none of the locals wouldn't have thought of that? Avoid low-hanging branches, folks. (I'm reminded of a scene from the terrible 2001 move Black Knight, where Martin Lawrence tries to fend off his execution by showing a medieval crowd a lighter. "I make fire!" To which a bored peasant replies "We have fire.") Many technologies that would be nominally feasible for pseudomedieval societies would fail due to lack of support infrastructure- semaphore towers, for instance, would have been technologically feasible all the way back in the Roman Empire, but their optics technology sucked- without spyglasses, they would have had to place the towers way too close together, making semaphores economically unfeasible.
Having the protagonist become filthy rich without changing their role in society: Large amounts of money warp the hell out of social relations around people, in quite a few ways.
Making your currency system too clean and neat. A pseudomedieval currency with fixed decimal
Falling for "one neat trick": Pretty much ANY time someone advocates for a single cure for all economic ills, it's... probably bullshit. "Going back to the gold standard will fix all our problems!" "Giving control of the economy to genius CEOs will fix all our problems!" "Executing all landlords will fix all our problems!" "Lower all taxes and corporations will flood to the state of Kansas despite Kansas sucking!" It... never really works out. (Though persecuting landlords is super tempting, ngl.) That said, if instead someone is advocating for a single solution not as a "fix all problems" sort of thing, but as a "this will massively improve a lot of different problems" sort of proposal, it's okay to be more open minded and offer their arguments more time and brain space. (For instance, Thomas Piketty's advocacy for a return to powerful progressive income taxes in Capital in the 21st Century? He doesn't present it as a cure-all, but rather as a difficult to implement policy that would have significant impacts on wealth inequality, and offers an extreme degree of evidence. Agree or disagree with him, he's certainly not trying the "one weird trick" approach. (Though I should note that it's hard to disagree with the sheer scale of his evidence.)
Trying to to design an economy based off a niche economic theory, like Georgism, for your PF world without sitting down and doing your research first: Really do your best to understand how it could go well, disastrously, or weirdly. It could work out fine, even great, in some situations- a PF system where magic power is based off magical "ownership" of land that supplies the owner with mana, for instance, could integrate well with Georgism, but you've really got to know what you're doing to stick the landing. (This sort of speculative worldbuilding is the one time you shouldn't bully Georgists. They're just so... bullyable.)
Treating humans as rational economic actors: Bad idea. Humans are irrational as hell, lol.
Basing literally any of your ideas off those of Ayn Rand: lol. lmao.

Tips:

If you promise economic fantasy, deliver economic fantasy! Same thing as any other narrative promise- you don't keep it, your readers will feel betrayed.
It's okay to create the illusion of an economy! Seriously! You don't need to plot out an elaborate economic system, you can just leave hints and clues that let the reader puzzle it out to the degree they wish. Just keep what hints you do describe logically consistent and well thought out! Like: What products can be found at the market? How far away do they come from? Is bargaining common, or are there consistent prices? Do consistent weights and measures exist, or is that always a source of frustration for folks? Are taxes in coinage, in product/produce? And if they're in the latter, is it a percent tax (one third your wheat crop!) requiring expensive monitoring and enforcement, or is it a flat rate (two bushels an acre!) that can punish farmers for bad crops but is much cheaper?
Don't necessarily try to make your MC the leader of a large firm! You can, it can be fun, but there are plenty of other, often easier and more satisfying, paths to writing economic fantasy! Like, how does someone in the middle of a democratic revolution against a magical monarchy experience the economic shifts?
Remember: a government's ability to control an economy, to whatever degree, is strictly limited by the amount of information they have about that economy! Legibility is power!
Read quality economic fantasy outside PF and LitRPG. J. Zachary Pike's Orconomics, Seth Dickinson's Masquerade series, etc, etc.
Read more about actual economics. Basic economics texts are great here!
Then read a bunch of stuff critical of basic economics, because economics as a science is full of crap. For instance, there's STILL folks teaching that coinage and commerce arose out of barter, despite the fact that evidence of barter has never shown up in a pre-coinage society! Pre-coinage societies almost universally use complex social credit and debt systems. (Read David Graeber's Debt: The First 5000 Years for more on this. Fantastic book, has inspired quite a bit of SF/F.)
If you stumble across a disagreement between theoretical economics and empirical economics, side with the empiricists! If theory disagrees with reality, theory needs to be the one to bend. (In general, empirical economists are just in a whole different league.)
If you stumble across a disagreement between economics and anthropology, or economics and history, or economics and literally ANY other science... probably side with the other science. Economics is in a fairly rough state these days, folks, for... long, complicated reasons ranging from philosophy of science issues to good old fashioned corruption.
And, ABOVE ALL ELSE: Spend the time to figure out HOW your progression system will affect the economy! Doesn't need to be perfect, but you need to consider how magic will affect things like: Food production, shipping and logistics, crop yield, bank vault security, counterfeiting (illusion magic's impact on the economy? Potentially huge!), healthcare quality and access, public heath measures (even more important than healthcare!), the presence or absence of insurance industries, how the use of various materials like gemstones as magic components would affect their price, magic's impact on ursury/credit, its impact on contract enforcement (if tracking magic is stronger than concealment magic, it gets a lot harder to renege on a debt, and vice versa), its impact on capital accumulation, its impact on precious metal supply (divination magic or transmutation magic could absolutely flood the market for gold and or silver, crashing its price!), and much much more! You don't need to answer all of these specific questions- rather, you just need to give the reader confidence that YOU have spent time considering how inhabitants of your world would try to make a living with magic.

Again, this isn't meant to be an exhaustive list! It's just a few pitfalls and tips, in no particularly coherent order. If you want to write really good economic fantasy, of any subgenre, you need to do your groundwork, do your research, and be ready to stress test the hell out of your worldbuilding.

So i’m planning on saving up money to get an old car off of facebook marketplace. I know I want and manual w/ rear wheel drive. What car should I get or what brand? Hi all, I would like opinions on my current school list. I only have MSTPs on my list - I would be open to putting MD/PhDs that are fully funded.
Here are my stats/application info:
CA ORM and LGBT, 511 MCAT (took the 4/13 breach bank flop), 3.95 cGPA, 2500+ hrs research in multiple types of labs, 200 hrs clinical volunteering, 100 hrs shadowing, 150 hrs non-clinical volunteering (tutoring + art therapy), 500 hrs student council president, 150 hrs health council president, 50 hrs university gender advocacy, 2000 hrs graphic novelist (published!), 5 posters (national and international), 1 international presentation, multiple conference and university research awards and grants, several academic and major university leadership awards, and papers currently under review: 1 first author (was an international project with 10 countries), 1 first co-author, and 1 middle author.
LORs are great and include one from the VP of my university.
Really nervous that my school list is too much and too top heavy given my MCAT:

-Modified legend Bugsy Stevens passed away last week. He was a 3 time tour champ, and won countless other track championships around New England. While his real name was Carl Berghman, he adopted the moniker “Bugsy Stevens” to avoid being caught racing by his CO while in the USAF. His 3 Tour championships all came in Old Blue, driving the car that Jake Johnson (who, like Bugsy, is from Rehoboth, MA) currently pilots today. He is 5th all time on the Stafford wins list, behind only Ted Christopher, Woody Pitkat, Keith Rocco, and Tom Fearn.
-NASCAR Regional instituted a new rule for tire changes. The air gun used to change the front tires MUST be returned to the pit wall before the car can leave the box. This obviously creates an interesting situation for modifieds, as 3 tire changes are common, with the left front often running the entire race. This shouldn’t be a major issue this week, but it will be in 2 weeks time at NHMS. This comes after a couple other rule changes aimed at minimizing costs for teams, centered around tire usage and practice.
-Jake Lutz will make his first career Tour start in the 14 for Advantage Motorsports. Welcome to the Tour Jake! (No idea on relation to Craig)
-Sam Rameau is making his first tour start since he was suspended for his role in the melee at the Thompson World Series last fall.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Richard Donner's turn.
Initially, Donner wanted to develop a career as an actor. He gained a bit part in a television program directed by Martin Ritt, who encouraged Donner to become a director instead, and he hired Donner as his assistant. Through his connections in Desilu, he started directing commercials. In the 60s, he transitioned into television, directing episodes for shows like The Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Get Smart, and Gilligan's Island. Afterwards, he had his chance to direct films.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1960s, the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

X-15 (1961)

"Actually filmed in space!"
His directorial debut. It stars David McLean, Charles Bronson, James Gregory and Mary Tyler Moore, and presents a fictionalized account of the X-15 research rocket aircraft program, the test pilots who flew the aircraft, and the associated NASA community that supported the program.
There are no box office numbers available, but it is said that it had a short and poor theatrical run. Reviews were mixed, and Moore said she's not proud of the film.

Salt and Pepper (1965)

"Join the club."
His second film. It stars Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Michael Bates, Ilona Rodgers and John Le Mesurier, and follows two nightclub owners finding themselves in trouble over a woman's death.
It received mixed reviews, and it earned $1.75 million in rentals.

Budget: N/A.
Domestic gross: $1,750,000 in rentals. ($17.4 million adjusted)
Worldwide gross: $1,750,000.

Lola (1970)

"It may be love... but it's definitely exhausting!"
His third film. It stars Charles Bronson and Susan George, and follows a 38-year-old writer of pornographic novels who meets and falls in love with a sixteen-year-old school girl whilst living in London.
There are no box office figures, but you can be sure of something: it was panned by everyone.

The Omen (1976)

"If something frightening happens to you today, think about it."
His fourth film. It stars Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Harvey Spencer Stephens, Billie Whitelaw, Patrick Troughton, Martin Benson, and Leo McKern. The film's plot follows Damien Thorn, a young child replaced at birth by his father, unbeknownst to his wife, after their biological child dies shortly after birth. As a series of mysterious events and violent deaths occur around the family and Damien enters childhood, they come to learn he is in fact the prophesied Antichrist.
Producer Harvey Bernhard came up with the idea for a film about the Antichrist after talking with one of his friends. WB was on board, but they later pulled out, so 20th Century Fox agreed to distribute the film. Donner favored an ambiguous reading of the script under which it would be left for the audience to decide whether Damien was the Antichrist or whether the series of violent deaths in the film were all just a string of unfortunate accidents. Seltzer rejected the ambiguity favored by Donner and pressed for an interpretation of his script that left no doubt for the audience that Damien Thorn was the Antichrist and that all of the deaths in the film were caused by the malevolent power of Satan, the interpretation that Bernhard chose to go with.
There were some... dark stories over the making of the film. Some aren't confirmed, but others are verified. So take the following with huge grains of salt.
In September 1975, Peck was flying to London, and during the flight, lightning struck the plane. Shortly after, executive producer Mace Neufeld's plane was also struck by lightning while en route to Los Angeles. That's twice in a span of only a few weeks. Then, writer David Seltzer's plane was also struck by lightning. And, while filming in Rome, lightning narrowly missed striking Bernhard. Lightning may never strike twice, but four times, and to different people whose only six degrees of separation at the time was The Omen? Oh, it gets even creepier. A scene was postponed, which meant Peck was not needed on the set, so a private jet that the crew was going to charter to bring Peck in was not necessary. The next day, it was reported that the plane they had intended to book hit a flock of birds and crashed, killing everyone on board.
Neufeld, probably already on edge after his plane was struck by lightning, was planning to eat at a restaurant nearby, but it was hit by an IRA bombing. The day after filming, the hotel that Donner had stayed at was also bombed.
John Richardson, the set designer, created a particularly macabre scene where a character dies from decapitation resulting from an automobile accident. While in Holland in August 1976, Richardson and his assistant, Liz Moore, were struck by a freakishly unfortunate fate. They fell victims to a head-on-collision, where Moore was cut in half, in similar fashion to the one Richardson had designed for the film. It happened in a Friday the 13th, near a road sign which says: “Ommen, 66.6 km.”

Is all of this true? I... I'm not sure. I don't fully believe it. But I also don't fully not believe it. Whatever the case, it's truly one of the most insane behind-the-scenes stuff.
After a slate of weak films, Donner finally got his big break here. The film earned $78 million worldwide, becoming a huge box office success. While it initially received mixed reviews, its reputation grew with time and it has been named as one of the best horror films of the 1970s. It would spawn a franchise, but Donner didn't return for the director's chair. Why? He was preparing for something super.

Superman (1978)

"You'll believe a man can fly."
His fifth film. Based on the DC Comics character, it stars Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Thaxter, Jackie Cooper, Trevor Howard, Marc McClure, Terence Stamp, Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Jack O'Halloran, Maria Schell, and Sarah Douglas. It depicts the origin of Superman, including his infancy as Kal-El of Krypton, son of Jor-El, and his youthful years in the rural town of Smallville. Disguised as reporter Clark Kent, he adopts a mild-mannered disposition in Metropolis and develops a romance with Lois Lane while battling the villainous Lex Luthor.
Ilya Salkind had first conceived the idea for a Superman film in late 1973, and he bought the rights with his father Alexander the following year. DC wanted a list of actors that were to be considered for Superman, and approved the producer's choices of Muhammad Ali, Al Pacino, James Caan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Dustin Hoffman. The filmmakers felt it was best to film Superman and Superman II back-to-back, and to make a negative pickup deal with Warner Bros. To show how serious he was, Alexander hired Mario Puzo (The Godfather) and paid him $600,000 to write the script.
Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, William Friedkin, Richard Lester, Peter Yates, John Guillermin, Ronald Neame and Sam Peckinpah were in negotiations to direct. Ilya wanted to hire Steven Spielberg to direct, but Alexander was skeptical, feeling it was best to "wait until [Spielberg's] big fish opens." His film, Jaws, became the highest grossing film ever, and the Salkinds offered him the job, but by that point Spielberg chose to make Close Encounters of the Third Kind instead. Guy Hamilton was hired, but left before filming due to legal issues. After seeing The Omen, the producers offered the job to Donner. He was planning to direct the Omen sequel, but decided to take Superman instead. Donner was dissatisfied with the campy script and brought in Tom Mankiewicz to perform a rewrite to start from scratch. According to Mankiewicz, "not a word from the Puzo script was used."
Before Donner signed, the film already cast Marlon Brando as Jor-El in 1975. And his terms were insane; top billing, a salary of $3.7 million and 11.75% of the box office gross profits (totaling $19 million), and his scenes had to be filmed in 12 days. He also refused to memorize his dialogue, so cue cards were compiled across the set. Hackman was cast as Lex Luthor days later, getting a $2 million salary. The filmmakers made it a priority to shoot all of Brando's and Hackman's footage "because they would be committed to other films immediately."
The first plan was for a famous star to play Superman, although Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Sylvester Stallone and Paul Newman all declined. When Donner signed, he decided to get an unknown actor. Reeve was suggested, but Donner and the producers felt he was too young and skinny. When other actors weren't convincing, they decided to give a screen test to Reeve. They wanted him to wear a muscle suit, but Reeve instead decided to take a strict physical exercise regime headed by David Prowse. After gaining enough weight, he was cast. Compared to Brando and Hackman, Reeve was paid just $250,000 for Superman and its sequel.
Filming began in March 1977, and it lasted 19 months because they were filming two films. The budget was $55 million ($303 million adjusted), which made it the most expensive film by that point. Warner Bros. only planned to distribute the film in North America, but was so impressed by the Krypton sequence, that they decided to distribute it worldwide. It was supposed to last eight months, but there were conflicts on set.
Donner had tensions with the Salkinds and producer Pierre Spengler concerning the escalating production budget and the shooting schedule. Richard Lester, who worked with the Salkinds on The Three Musketeers and The Four Musketeers, was then brought in as a temporary co-producer to mediate the relationship between Donner and the Salkinds, who by now were refusing to talk to each other. On his relationship with Spengler, Donner remarked, "At one time if I'd seen him, I would have killed him." Due to this, they decided to stop filming back-to-back with the sequel, and Donner was assigned to finish the first film. By that point, 75% was already shot by Donner.
The film opened with $7.4 million in its first weekend, despite playing at just 508 theaters, breaking a record for Warner Bros. As it expanded, it earned $10.3 million in its third weekend, which was the biggest weekend in history. Through the December 22-28 week, it earned a colossal $18.5 million, a figure that no film achieved in just 7 days. It eventually closed its domestic run with $134 million. And WB was right in believing in its worldwide prospects, as the film earned a huge $300 million, becoming their highest grossing film.
The film also received critical acclaim, and it has been named as one of the best films of the 1970s. It won a Special Oscar for its Visual Effects. The film was deemed a cultural landmark for comic books, and it has been proclaimed by many as perhaps the most influential comic book film ever. For the world finally believed that, indeed, a man could fly.
With this, Superman was finally an icon on the big screen. While Donner filmed 75% of Superman II, he was controversially fired before resuming his duties. There would be more Superman films in subsequent years (including one next year), but none have captured the cultural zeitgeist that this one achieved.

Inside Moves (1980)

"It'll make you feel good, and that ain't bad."
His sixth film. Based on the novel by Todd Walton, it stars John Savage, David Morse, Diana Scarwid, and Amy Wright. It follows a man who became crippled after a failed suicide attempt, and he turns to drink, favoring a local dive bar frequented by the handicapped. There, he befriends the bartender, an ex-basketball player saving up for corrective surgery in hopes of returning to the court, and meets a kind young lady who aids him with his physical and mental rehabilitation.
Donner states that he agreed to direct the film only to take his mind off being fired and replaced from Superman II. He referred to the film as "the smallest film I could do that was just very near and dear to me, at that point, and I felt this is going to take my mind totally off that."
It received mixed reviews, and made just $1.2 million at the box office.

The Toy (1982)

"When Jackie Gleason told his son he could have any present he wanted, he picked the most outrageous gift of all... Richard Pryor."
His seventh film. The film stars Richard Pryor, Jackie Gleason and Scott Schwartz, and follows a janitor at a department store. The owner's son is told that he may have anything in the toy department. He chooses the janitor, who the owner pays to spend a week with the boy.
The film was panned by critics, and was named as one of the worst films of the year. But with $47 million at the box office, it was still a success.

The Goonies (1985)

"Join the adventure."
His eighth film. The film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, Ke Huy Quan, John Matuszak, Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi, Joe Pantoliano and Mary Ellen Trainor. In the film, a group of kids who live in the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, attempt to save their homes from foreclosure and, in doing so, they discover an old treasure map that takes them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate. During the adventure, they are pursued by a family of criminals who want the treasure for themselves.
Donner noted both the difficulties and pleasures of working with so many child actors. He praised them for their energy and excitement, but also said that they were also unruly when brought together. While Donner is credited as the director, some have referred to producer Steven Spielberg as co-director.
The film received a great response, and after a slate of weak films, Donner bounced back with a much needed box office hit. The film was very influential, and it helped launch the careers of many of its stars.

Ladyhawke (1985)

"A magical adventure."
His ninth film. The film stars Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. The story is about a young thief who becomes unwillingly involved with a warrior and his lady who are hunted by the Bishop of Aquila. As he learns about the couple's past and secret, he chooses to help them overcome the Bishop's forces, and to lift an infernal curse.
It received mixed reviews, and it failed to recoup its $20 million budget.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

"Two cops. Glover carries a weapon. Gibson is one. He's the only L.A. cop registed as a..."
His tenth film. It stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, and Mitchell Ryan. The film follows a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives — Martin Riggs, a former Green Beret who has become suicidal following the death of his wife, and veteran officer and family man Roger Murtaugh — who work together as partners.
Recent UCLA graduate Shane Black wrote the screenplay in mid-1985. Black stated that his intention was to do an "urban western" inspired by Dirty Harry where a violent character "reviled for what he did, what he is capable of, the things he believed in" is eventually recruited for being the one that could solve the problem. His first draft was quite different from the final film; it was darker in tone and it included massive action scale sequences. The ending of the script contained a chase scene with helicopters and a trailer truck full of cocaine exploding over Hollywood Hills with cocaine snowing over the Hollywood sign.
The script was rejected by some studios, but Warner Bros. took an interest. Producer Joel Silver was brought in and worked with Black to further develop the script. Donner also brought in writer Jeffrey Boam to do some uncredited re-writes on Black's script after he found parts of it to be too dark. Donner got Gibson involved, while someone else suggested Danny Glover. After a successful screen test, the film was greenlit.
The film was a huge hit, earning $120 million worldwide and continued launching the careers of Gibson and Glover, even if they already had a few recognizable titles by that point. It also received very positive reviews, and was another prime example of the buddy cop genre. Another Donner W.

Scrooged (1988)

"The spirits will move you in odd and hysterical ways."
His 11th film. Based on the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, it stars Bill Murray, Karen Allen, John Forsythe, John Glover, Bobcat Goldthwait, Carol Kane, Robert Mitchum, Michael J. Pollard, and Alfre Woodard. The film is a modern retelling that follows Frank Cross, a cynical and selfish television executive who is visited by a succession of ghosts on Christmas Eve intent on helping him regain his Christmas spirit.
After Ghostbusters, Murray only took a brief appearance in Little Shop of Horrors and chose to take a break. When he did feel a desire to return to acting, he said the "scripts were just not that good", and he returned to the this project as he found the idea of making a funny Scrooge appealing. Murray was paid $6 million for his role. He helped the writers, Mitch Glazer and Michael O'Donoghue, in rewriting.
Murray struggled with a scene where he reveals his redemption live on TV. Wanting a central acting moment, however, Murray gave an emotional and intense performance, deviating from his marked positions and improvising his speech. Glazer and O'Donoghue thought that the actor was suffering a mental breakdown. After he was finished, the crew applauded Murray, but O'Donoghue remarked "What was that? The Jim Jones hour?" Donner turned and punched O'Donoghue in the arm, leaving him bruised for a week.
Despite the commitment, however, there was drama behind the scenes. Murray said that while he was enjoying the experience of the script and having fun as "the meanest person in the world", he found the production "sloppy" and has expressed unhappiness with the final cut. For his part, O'Donoghue later said that Donner did not understand comedy, omitting the script's subtler elements for louder and faster moments. He estimated that only 40% of his and Glazer's original script made it into the final film and the surviving content was "twisted". Murray was also not content with Donner, "Scrooged could have been a really, really great movie. The script was so good... He kept telling me to do things louder, louder, louder. I think he was deaf." Donner, meanwhile, has a much more positive memory of Murray, calling him "superbly creative but occasionally difficult - as difficult as any actor."
The film received polarizing reactions, particularly for the tone. But as it was Murray's follow-up to Ghostbusters, it made $100 million worldwide, making it a box office success. In subsequent years, it has become a Christmas classic.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

"The magic is back."
His 12th film. The second installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Joss Ackland, Derrick O'Connor and Patsy Kensit. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh protect an irritating federal witness, Leo Getz, while taking on a gang of South African drug dealers hiding behind diplomatic immunity.
After the first film's success, Joel Silver asked Shane Black to write a sequel. Although he was struggling with personal issues, Black still managed to write the first draft along with his friend, novelist Warren Murphy. Although many people thought that their script was brilliant, it was rejected by Silver, Donner and the studio for being too dark and bloody, and because in the ending of the script Riggs dies, while they wanted to keep him alive in case of further sequels. They also wanted the second film to focus more on comedy, while Black's draft focused more on courage and heroics, like Riggs willing to die to protect Murtaugh and his family, due to his love for them.
When his script was rejected, Black felt that he had failed the producers. Black refused to re-write the script and quit from the project after working for six months on it. Black later said how the problem with the second film was that they did too much comedy, and how he dislikes the third and fourth films because of the way Riggs's character was changed. Donner got Jeffrey Boam back to rewrite, and one of the biggest changes was expanding Leo Getz's character.
The film received very great reviews, and saw a big increase from the original, earning $227 million worldwide.

Radio Flyer (1992)

"Powered by imagination."
His 13th film. The film stars Lorraine Bracco, John Heard, Elijah Wood, Joseph Mazzello, Adam Baldwin, and Ben Johnson and is narrated by Tom Hanks. Two young boys try to transform their toy into an airplane after their stepfather turns abusive. They wish to escape the physical abuse and fly away to safety.
The film received negative reviews, and it barely got 10% of its budget. Luckily for Donner, he had another film for that year.

Lethal Weapon 3 (1992)

"The magic is back again."
His 14th film. The third installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, and Stuart Wilson. In the film, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh pursue Jack Travis, a former LAPD lieutenant turned ruthless arms dealer, during the six days prior to Murtaugh's retirement. Riggs and Murtaugh are joined by Leo Getz as well as internal affairs Sergeant Lorna Cole.
Jeffrey Boam's first two drafts of the script were different from the final film. The character of Lorna for example was not a woman in original drafts, but the original character still had the same personality and was just as lethal and crazy as Riggs, making him his match. Riggs also had an affair with Roger's daughter Rianne, and a few parts in the final film where Roger suspects that Riggs and Rianne are interested in each other are only parts left from the original drafts. Donner demanded some big changes on the script which included changing the original character of Lorna into a woman and turning her into Riggs's girlfriend. He also re-worked the script to be less story-oriented and not focus on the main villains but instead on the relationship between Riggs and Murtaugh. He also toned down action scenes from the script and brought back Leo Getz into the story. All of his scenes were written in afterwards.
The film received mixed reviews and was considered as weaker than the previous films. But it still earned $320 million worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise and Donner's highest grossing film (although Superman still has that title adjusted for inflation).

Maverick (1994)

His 15th film. Based on the 1957–1962 television series, it stars Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and James Garner (who starred in the original series). The film follows Bret Maverick, a card player and con artist who collects money in order to enter a high-stakes poker game. He is joined in his adventure by Annabelle Bransford, another con artist, and Marshal Zane Cooper, a lawman.
The film received positive reviews, and was another great success at the box office, earning $183 million worldwide.

Assassins (1995)

His 16th film. The film stars Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. Professional hit-man Robert Rath wants to fulfill a few more contracts before retiring but unscrupulous ambitious newcomer hit-man Miguel Bain keeps killing Rath's targets.
The film was panned by critics, and was a box office flop.

Conspiracy Theory (1997)

"Jerry Fletcher sees conspiracies everywhere... one has turned out to be true. Now his enemies want him dead. And she's the only one he can trust."
His 17th film. It stars Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart, and centers on an eccentric taxi driver who believes many world events are triggered by government conspiracies, and the Justice Department attorney who becomes involved in his life.
The film received mixed reviews, and despite earning $137 million worldwide, it wasn't a box office success due to its high budget.

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

"The gang's all here."
His 18th film. The fourth and final installment in the Lethal Weapon franchise, it stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Joe Pesci, Rene Russo, Chris Rock, and Jet Li. It follows Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh as they investigate a Chinese immigrant smuggling ring. A crime boss named Benny Chan leads them to the Chinatown.
Wanting another film in the franchise, Warner Bros. and Joel Silver tried buying a new spec script titled Simon Says in hopes of rewriting it into a script for Lethal Weapon 4. Written by Jonathan Hensleigh, the story was about a police detective and a shop owner forced to find and stop bombs planted all over a city as part of a mad bomber's revenge plot against the detective. 20th Century Fox then bought the script, and decided to use it as the basis for a new Die Hard film, Die Hard with a Vengeance. Donner was committed to another film, but Gibson was not interested.
The film had a very difficult pre-production, as the script was still being re-written and rejected. Silver ultimately brought in TV writer Channing Gibson to work on the script, after he was impressed by Gibson's rewrite of a spec script titled Sandblast. Gibson took the gig thinking it would be a more relaxed writing job than anything he did for TV. However, much like the previous two sequels, the script kept getting changed and rewritten over and over again. Gibson would end up doing more work and revisions on it than on all of his TV work put together. Production even started with only half of the script.
Something you might have noticed, is that the budget was far larger than the previous films. While the previous two films cost $30-$35 million, Lethal Weapon 4 had a budget of... $150 million ($288 million adjusted). Which means that at that point, it was the most expensive R-rated film ever and the third most expensive film, just behind Titanic and Waterworld. Why? Because the delays kept coming... but Warner Bros. was desperate in greenlighting the film. Realizing they had no big tentpole releases scheduled for summer 1998, Warner Bros. finally greenlit the film in late 1997. So they opened all their wallets and started shooting in January 1998, despite having one third of the film not written yet, including the ending. Due to issues during filming, including the script changes, production ended around mid May, less than two months before its scheduled July release. The ending was not written until it was finally time to film it. Editors had to work very quickly to have the film ready, which is why the trailers feature some deleted and alternate scenes which are not in the film. So the film was greenlit, filmed and released in theaters in the span of just 7 months.
The film received mixed reviews. And if Warner Bros. was confident that spending $150 million to rush a film was worth it, they were in for a rude awakening. The film earned just $285 million worldwide, which meant that the film was a box office flop.
It was the last film in the franchise. Although a gang in a pub in Philadelphia kept the spirit alive by making three sequels, one of which had Danny DeVito as the bad guy.

Timeline (2003)

"You're history."
His 19th film. Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, it stars Paul Walker, Frances O'Connor, Gerard Butler, Billy Connolly, David Thewlis, and Anna Friel. It follows a team of present-day archaeology and history students who are sent back in time to medieval France to rescue their professor from the middle of a battle.
The film was a critical and commercial failure.

16 Blocks (2006)

"1 Witness... 118 Minutes."
His 20th and final film. It stars Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse. The film unfolds in the real time narration method, and follows Jack, who is assigned the task of escorting Eddie, a witness, from police custody to the courthouse. However, when they are attacked on the way, Jack learns that the entire NYPD wants Eddie dead.
The film received mixed reviews, and it marked his fifth bomb in a row. It was his final film before his death in 2021.

The Verdict

Despite the inconsistency of his filmography, it's hard to deny Donner as a very influential figure of cinema.
He was an expert in handling many genres; you'd expect the director of The Goonies to make 4 Lethal Weapon films? Or that the guy who made The Omen would make Scrooged? Sure, his last films indicated that he might have lost it, but you can't blame him for trying. The fact that he was willing to make Lethal Weapon 5 before his death show he was very committed. He was never too old for this shit.
And of course, there's Superman. The film that changed comic book films as we know them. It wasn't the first, but it was perhaps the most influential. There's an argument that either Batman, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Avengers, Deadpool or Joker are more influential, but those films wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Donner. It's why Kevin Feige shows the film to all the cast and crew before filming any MCU film. If the film was put in the careless hands of a mediocre director, it would've been forgotten almost immediately. And the genre would be very different today. So it's a testament to the strength of the film of how much it could change the landscape of what was possible. He and Christopher Reeve really offered something fresh and exciting. They truly made the world believe a man could fly.

News about ADCC/CJI are still allowed as top-level posts. All other stuff goes in this thread. We understand that the line between speculation and news can sometimes be blurry, but we don't want to put everything into a megathread unless we have to. So for now, this will be our approach.
What is going on with ADCC / CJI?
ADCC is arguably the most prestigious no-gi tournament in the world. B-Team instructor Craig Jones has been vocal about low pay for ADCC (see payout structure).
This year, Craig has announced the Craig Jones Invitational (CJI), which plans to pay each fighter $10k to participate and $1 million for the winner of each bracket. CJI is also scheduled to go head-to-head with ADCC in the same city on overlapping days: CJI on 8/16-17 and ADCC on 8/17-18. Craig believes the income for big tournaments should be spent on fighter pay, not production value or more expensive venues (link). His anonymous sponsor may provide funding for future years if successful (link). There are superfights on the CJI card as well; Craig is looking for separate sponsors for those fighters.
A number of fighters who were signed up for ADCC have already jumped ship to CJI, including Ffion Davies, William Tackett, Nicky Ryan, Nick Rodriguez, Jozef Chen, Mason Fowler, UFC fighter Luke Rockhold, and Lucas "Hulk" Barbosa.
Other athletes have been invited to fill in for now-vacant ADCC spots. No official news yet on Gordon Ryan's plans. Currently it is understood that he is in the ADCC superfight against Yuri Simoes.

2024.06.01 19:35 Fun-Teacher-1711 So, is PB a fascist?

Okay, I used to watch this show a lot when I was younger and back in September I decided to revisit and watch the whole thing (I'm about halfway through Season 7 right now).
And like, Princess Bubblegum is just a straight up totalitarian dictator. I mean, she rules as a strong-man autocrat (the only time elections are held, it's through a loophole and she eventually usurps the democratically elected leader). She operates (for a long time) a surveillance network not just within her own kingdom, but outside of it too. And she has a brutal police force (not just the banana guards, but originally the violent Rattleballs too, a sort of "secret-police"). She's even willing to use this power to destroy dissent (see: arresting everybody at Tree Trunks' & Mr. Pig's wedding, an event where she is even reffered to as a tyrant).
But this just points to her running a typical absolute monarchy, although a particularly repressive one. But I am going to go one step further - I will argue that PB is an ideological fascist, and her dictatorship goes beyond just an autocracy.
I would say the defining features of fascism beyond a repressive autocracy are (okay I would define them slightly differently, this is based on wikipedia lol):

Extreme Militarism, to which I point the gumball guardians, which she has been shown to use not just for defense. This is probably the "iffiest" point on this list, because overall the candy kingdom is quite peaceful (except for violently couping/overthrowing Lemongrabs).
Ultranationalism, to which I point to the time PB literally tried to genocide all the fire people and disable their military - because she distrusts them, not for anything they've done, but for their race. Also, isn't it strange that the only citizens of the Candy Kingdom are the candy people she created (a sort of eugenics)?
Subordination of individual interests, to which I point to the blatant disregard for the will and happiness of the candy people, including mass executions (like what she did to the Rattleballs) as well as the frequent cloning (a process none of these peeps consented to).
Strict regimentation of society based on social hierarchy, to which I point to the fact that all the candy people are created to pursue specific things based on their "type" (race), for instance banana guards being the police, starchy being the gravedigger, etc. and it being clear that the candy people may not even be capable of going outside this racial hierarchy & regimentation, with herself at the top - not a very just society at all, is it?

Overall, I would say that the Candy Kingdom shows many signs of a fascist(ic) dictatorship, and that Princess Bubblegum is definitely a fascist dictator. Especially since none of the other kingdoms/societies really seem to show these characteristics to the same degree at least (except maybe Slime Princess' sister).

I still have Anora at 1. When I picked Anora as my BP frontrunner back in March I fully expected another Boy and the Heron situation where my prediction falls flat on its ass, but surpirse, It looks like Anora could actually win best picture! So I will be here all year
Emmanuel has gone from my number 2 to off my longlists completely. I have also removed Megalopolis from my lineup for obvious reasons, and Juror No. 2 has dropped from 10 to 15.
I have Queer at 2 now as I think this is going to be Guadagnino's most acclaimed film yet and I'm expecting Netflix to pick it up for a big campaign.
Last month I had Nightbitch somewhere after 40 in my longlist but today I have it at 3. Searchlight + December release + buzzy actress in transformative role. I think this will be the weirdo oscar bait of the year.
I'm going in on Walter Salles' I'm Still Here since SPC picked it up and I believe Fremaux was talking about it as a potential Palme winner. I could easily see Salles picking up industry support.
I’m not sure what to do with Emilia Perez because it could go either way. As crowd pleasing as it is the critics are a little too divided for me to feel comfortable predicting it, but nothing else makes sense to put in at 10.

I kinda think Craig has this in the bag. I don't see any competition for him besides maybe Domingo but even then I do not think Domingo has a chance at a win. I keep seeing people say Domingo has a "narrative" but what is it? That you like him? If Sing Sing is winning an acting award itll have to be Macklin.

It's kinda overrated tbh. It has too many options, many of which are weird and useless. The best recipes were made by others, like "Reggie's Portra" (X-Trans IV), "The Big Negative" (X-Trans II) and "Craig's E6XD" (X-Trans I). So is there a list of confirmed recipes instead of random numbers?
Ritchie mostly shoots gas stations, occasional family portraits, empty desert roads. Of course each recipe looks okay with subjects like these. But it seems he hasn’t improved much over the years: just takes a short walk and uploads a new recipe after it. This isn’t hate, just my experience after trying recipes for different cameras. Recipes from YouTube sound fun, but you have to watch the video every time to get the settings. Is there a site maybe with curated recipes?

2024.06.01 17:01 eZGjBw1Z New and Changed Products - June 2024 (More price decreases than increases)

Usually around the first of the month we have a batch of price changes. According to the "How to Become a Contract Liquor Agent" document, "The Agent must also complete price changes that occur at the first of the month..."
I plan to use this post to capture other smaller changes that happen during the rest of the month before the big change next month. Be sure to go back and check out what changed last month after the 1st.
Counts for 6/1/24:

Number of Price Decreases: 486
Number of New Products: 29
Number of Price Increases: 20
Number of Status Changes: 7 (3 are to De-Listed)

For each category I've sorted by the amount of the price increase or decrease. New products are shown first, then price decreases are shown in decreasing order followed by price increases in increasing order. At the end are products with other changes unrelated to price.
Here's a link to what changed last month in May, 2024.
Current product status is indicated on each line as follows. OHLQ hasn't publicly explained what these things mean but I've included my best guess below.

- Regularly supplied and available for purchase
D = De-Listed
- No longer carried by OHLQ, may still be available in some stores or the warehouse. Sometimes considered a Last Call product
I = Inactive
- Discontinued by the supplier or otherwise unavailable to OHLQ

Hey everyone! I was pleased by the overwhelming interest I got in my collection, as someone who has a passion for building soil and hunting beans for unique phenos the last 15 years. I am glad how many people appreciate true one of kind heirloom genetics!
Why am I getting rid of them? Simply put - I am trying to go the legit route and this state is making it beyond difficult. I need to recoup and regroup. Any support is much appreciated. I’ve waited my whole life for this.
Pricing - I updated below. Much of my collection is very hard to find one of kind stuff that is highly sought after. No random pollen chucking, true bred stabilized genomes. There’s a lot of history in that list as well if you’re someone who understands the genomics of the plant. You’ll see breeder, where they’re out of, the strain name, the cross and a little bit of history / description on some of it. Some very very special stuff. Pricing is either what I paid for it or a little more if it’s something special that’s not easy to find or not being bred anymore.
*Each strain is in original packaging stored in a curidor at a steady 52 degrees, no light, no humidity. I find this is the best way to store beans for long term storage and guaranteed high germination rates. I usually get 97-100% germ rate with my germination method which I will include on a printed out sheet for anyone who grabs any of my offerings. I want you to succeed and find something special - I cherish my collection and sad to see a lot of it go but you gotta do what you gotta do. I’d really like to see this stuff go to growers who care about the plant and preserving the uniqueness to it for years to come. Hope all of this helps

Bandaid Haze ix 3.0 (Piff) - Cuban Black Haze x A5/Thai [R] 200 (2 packs) {These seeds originally came from a Spanish grower in the “A5 crew” out of Southern Holland. “A5” was short for their NL#5 x Haze A open Thai pollination project. These seeds were shared with legendary grower Bodhi, who found one male and used it to pollinate a cut of “Cuban Black Haze” that he had. The strain was referred to as “Piff” and the seeds were shared almost exclusively with Doc D. After running the seeds, Doc selected “Piff #7” and shared the cut back with Bodhi who further worked the line. The cut was a significantly better long flowering haze variety with a shorter flowering time than the Cuban Black Haze mother or A5 father. Bodhi then later referred to the strain as “Bandaid Haze” coining the term because he said “it heals all wounds” This genome has direct lineage to the New York Hazes (NYC Piff / Uptown Piff / Washington Heights Haze) of the 2000s without any of the paranoia/anxiety that came from many of the hazes from that era. Hey everyone! I was pleased by the overwhelming interest I got in my collection, as someone who has a passion for building soil and hunting beans for unique phenos the last 15 years. I am glad how many people appreciate true one of kind heirloom genetics!
Why am I getting rid of them? Simply put - I am trying to go the legit route and this state is making it beyond difficult. I need to recoup and regroup. Any support is much appreciated. I’ve waited my whole life for this.
Pricing - I updated below. Much of my collection is very hard to find one of kind stuff that is highly sought after. No random pollen chucking, true bred stabilized genomes. There’s a lot of history in that list as well if you’re someone who understands the genomics of the plant. You’ll see breeder, where they’re out of, the strain name, the cross and a little bit of history / description on some of it. Some very very special stuff. Pricing is either what I paid for it or a little more if it’s something special that’s not easy to find or not being bred anymore.
*Each strain is in original packaging stored in a curidor at a steady 52 degrees, no light, no humidity. I find this is the best way to store beans for long term storage and guaranteed high germination rates. I usually get 97-100% germ rate with my germination method which I will include on a printed out sheet for anyone who grabs any of my offerings. I want you to succeed and find something special - I cherish my collection and sad to see a lot of it go but you gotta do what you gotta do. I’d really like to see this stuff go to growers who care about the plant and preserving the uniqueness to it for years to come. Hope all of this helps

2024.06.01 12:35 Left-Finding6540 It's now June, I'm looking to make a thread of last minute tips, if anyone has any last minute tips for any subjects I'll add them

English: for section 1 question a on paper 1 use pqe, point quote explain, nake one point use a quote to back it up and explain, leave extra space after each point incase you have extra time to spend on it,alternatively a kind commentor added fhe following:Can I add one to English, from an English teacher. Instead of PQE, use PEEL . Point, Evidence, Explain and Link (to the next paragraph/back to the question). Will boost C mark.
Question b of that same question make sure if you write the text of a speech the whole text is said speech and if you have to for example write the text of a speech from a famous person you never step out of character. Your opening line should be basically a rephrasing of the question eg:write an article for the local newspaper, you should say "I am writing for the x newspaper to tell you about...", even if its unrealistic they still look for this in regard to your purpose mark.
For the composing:make sure there are famous people you can talk about a lot, also just a few topics that youve got some bit of knowledge on e.g ai might be handy
personal essay: use anecdotes even if they're made up
Short story:I'm avoiding this personally but make sure you show don't tell and alsondont leave plot holes, from what I've heard people who do this already have things like settings, characters and storylines planned out before the exam
Opinion essay: chose for or against and be strongly for or against, if im not mistaken you can be neutral but it's a lot harder
For the single text your first quote shouldn't be from act 1 scene 1 or your texts equivalent,your answer shouldn't be a summary
For hamlet: have lots of quotes, back in as many points as possible with quotes, remember the word regicide and antic-disposition, if the question asks about Claudius' role as villain if must only be his direct wrong doings (laertes, elder hamlet) and not the ones he indirectly caused by making hamlet mad (ophelia, polonius etc).
Comparative:constantly compare your 3 texts,(this next tip only applies if parf of your comparative course is never let me go) MOST of the time if you are doing the question 1 which is split up into a and b where a is in relation to 1 text and b is 2, never let me go will be in part a as it is hard to compare to other texts, this obviously depends on the question but if in doubt do that
Unseen poetry:I'm absolutely useless at this but on my mock I completely misunderstood the poem and got 17/20, waffle with confidence, don't spend too long on it as 20 marks is sweet fa in your English paper and the difference between spending 20 mins and 25 mins is no more than 3 marks. As a kind commentary added(soz days are long cba tagging everybody) backup using any poetic technique you can
Poetry: have one poem you can talk for days about no matter what, they will more than likely come up. Have 3 more you understand to be able to answer a question, then your perfectly covered. If you want to be more confident you can learn 2 poems to perfect 50/50 but from here to Thursday time management is important
History: if your a slow writer like me learn a metric fuck tonne of good quotes they're the quickest way to pick up marks, here's a few if you want them

Also know the 3 document essays off by heart as one will defiently come up,somebody mentioned about knowing every case study off by heart and learning information rather than essays but that's more long term advice than last minute, still tho
Geography: from here to friday dedicate 10 minutes to aerial photography, it's 8 marks waiting to be claimed. Nows probably too late for flashcards but if it isn't fucking use them for srps
Maths: nows not too late to print off a mock or past paper, see what needs the most work and make sure you fully understand them
Irish: if your like me and haven't done a scratch there's still more than a week, predictions are your best friend, learn one essay, one poetry notes, one story notes and one play notes and let God decide how well he wants you to do
French:be able to write about the Olympics as if your fluent, its probably going to come up. Know your tenses and your subjunctive. Learn off a few proverbs they add marks to any essay. "Je suis tout à fait d'accord avec le declaration Ci dessus","il est neccesaire de pesser le pour et le contre", "n'oublions pas le proverbe" and "a Mon avis" fit into most opinion pieces, know them(get correct spelling aswel mine was affected by autocorrect). Also if your down to the wire learn diary phrased, even if you write a bad diary you will get marks for the phrases.
Somebody has pointed out its the 70 year anniversary of the d day bombings so bare that in mind too
Accounting: final accounts will come up,know 2/3, learn all your ratios and all the theory they will come up, know either budgeting or costing as one of each will come up, that leaves the second 100 marker, it will most likely be suspense as that comes up every second year but it could be a 60 marker, I wouldn't even bother worrying about anything else until ratios,final accounts, budget/costing and suspense are up to the grade your hoping for but if all that is sorted learn off maybe 3 other possible 100 markers, that any you have 4 which includes the 80% likely suspense and 2 will come up, the accounting exam is probably the easiest to predict, and for the love of God know your theory. Keep doing exam questions of your struggling, every time you correct one write down your mistakes and have the list of mistakes next to you when doing the next one, then tear it and make a new list of mistakes
Biology: If you know photosynthesis and respiration off from the back of the hand, you are good to go because there is a very high chance one or the other will be asked in some form (could even be a full 30-mark question if you are fortunate enough).
Business: Be 100% familiar with the ABQ strands (the comprehension can help you out a bit in finding the information for each question but you need to know the material that goes along with it from the heart). For Section 3: Defo know Strand 1 or 2 as that comes up as a question 1 or 2, Ratios as that can come up (caught me off guard when I did LC and made the difference between H1 and H2 for me unfortunately) and then would recommend preparing either strand 6 or 7 (or both if you wish for the final question you decide to attempt) Think if I recall you have to do one from Part A, one from Part B and then one other question from either part. Section A is an easy way to pick up marks so if you are struggling bank on Section A and B to get you going and make a decent stab at Section C and know section 1-3 inside out
DCG - KNOW DIHEDRAL ANGLE!! This can come up in Section A as a short Q, in Section B as it's own Q, and in Section C in Surface Geometry.
Only eliminate one topic from Section B! Anything can come up, you can only leave one thing out in the exam. So, your study should be the same.
This is all my experience, I will add any good advice for these subject or other subjects that are provided in the comments, all of these are for higher level except for maths, good luck,don't panic and think about the pint that's instore once this is all over
