2024.05.19 20:37 Werone90 When to titrate

76F SW205 CW193 GW175 I’ve been on the med for 4 mos. Went up to 7.5 six weeks ago and have only lost 2 lbs. since. My doctor gave me a big lecture about not titerating up because “you have to develop a new relationship with food” vs. “being dependent on an expensive drug for the rest of your life.” She also warned about increasing dose because “what are you going to do if you get to max dose and it stops working?” She wants me to focus on every bite: am I eating this to nourish my body or for some other reason? And if it’s the latter, find another way to fill that need/nurture myself. All good advice, but the net effect is that I’m scared to increase my dose to 10mg! But that might be what I need. Any advice welcome.

Maldives Island Is Sinking
Maldives Island Is Sinking As we stand on the fragile shores of the Maldives, it becomes painfully clear that this paradise is slipping away like sand through our fingers. With rising sea levels encroaching upon our beloved islands, the Maldives is facing an existential threat - the metaphorical tide of climate change relentlessly eroding the very foundation of our nation. But what does this sinking mean for the Maldivian people and the delicate ecosystem that calls these islands home? And can we find a way to stay afloat in the face of this looming crisis?Let us embark on a journey to explore the depths of the Maldives' sinking predicament, and perhaps discover a glimmer of hope amidst the rising waters.Key TakeawaysMaldives is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels due to its low maximum ground elevation and estimated rise in sea levels. The Maldives government has taken initiatives to combat climate change and strengthen resilience, including aiming to become carbon neutral.Overfishing and waste management issues exacerbate the impacts of climate change in the Maldives.International cooperation is crucial in addressing the sinking crisis in the Maldives, with a need for collective action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Rising Sea Levels Threaten the MaldivesRising sea levels pose a significant threat to the Maldives, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. With over 1,000 coral islands and a maximum ground elevation of just 2.4 meters, the Maldives is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels. An estimated rise of 20 to 30 centimeters in the next 20 to 40 years could have catastrophic consequences for the nation. The effects of rising sea levels are already evident in the Maldives. By 2021, 90% of the islands have experienced severe erosion, and 97% of the country's land no longer has access to fresh groundwater. This loss of land and freshwater resources has dire implications for the Maldivian people, who heavily rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods and survival. To address the challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels, the Maldives has undertaken various initiatives. The nation has set ambitious targets to become carbon neutral, eliminate or offset greenhouse gas emissions, and implement measures to combat sea level rise. Additionally, the Maldives has focused on mass tourism as a development strategy to generate revenue and strengthen its resilience to climate threats.Despite these efforts, the Maldives faces numerous challenges in the face of climate change. Overfishing, waste management, and the decline of natural environments and biodiversity are among the issues exacerbated by climate change and human activities. It's crucial for the international community to take collective action on climate change to support the Maldives and other vulnerable nations in adapting to and mitigating the impacts of rising sea levels. Failure to do so could result in the loss of a unique and culturally rich nation.Impact on the Maldivian PopulationThe impact of the sinking Maldives on the population is significant and multifaceted. Rising sea levels not only threaten the physical displacement of people but also pose a grave risk to their livelihoods, particularly those dependent on fishing and tourism. The scarcity of fresh groundwater further exacerbates the challenges faced by the Maldivian population, affecting their daily lives and overall health. As the government takes steps to combat climate change and its consequences, it's crucial to prioritize the well-being and resilience of the Maldivian people, ensuring their safety and stability in the face of these environmental challenges.Population DisplacementPopulation displacement in the Maldives due to the sinking of the islands caused by sea level rise is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention. As the Maldives consists of low-lying islands, the rising sea levels pose a significant threat to the population's safety and livelihoods. Efforts have been made to combat this impact, such as making the Maldives carbon neutral and implementing a National Adaptation Programme of Action. The construction of an artificial, elevated island called Hulhumalé has also been undertaken. Additionally, innovative solutions like floating homes have been explored as an alternative living option. However, environmental challenges such as overfishing, waste management, and damage to coral reefs further exacerbate the situation. The socio-cultural impacts of population displacement also raise concerns about preserving the unique Maldivian culture and identity. This situation necessitates comprehensive strategies and immediate action to address the challenges faced by the Maldivian population.Efforts to Combat Population DisplacementEnvironmental ChallengesSocio-Cultural ImpactsMaking the Maldives carbon neutralOverfishingPreservation of cultureNational Adaptation Programme of ActionWaste managementLoss of cultural heritageConstruction of elevated island (Hulhumalé)Damage to coral reefsAdaptation to new livingExploration of floating homesenvironmentsLoss of LivelihoodsThe economic impact of overfishing and the need for fishermen in the Maldives to travel further into the ocean to find fish has resulted in the loss of livelihoods and a decline in the fishing industry. This has had a significant impact on the Maldivian population, particularly those who depend on fishing for their income and traditional way of life. The sinking Maldives and the rising seas exacerbate this problem, making it even more challenging for fishermen to sustain their livelihoods.Decreased income for fishermen due to overfishing and the need to venture further into the ocean.Disruption of the fishing industry, leading to economic hardship for those dependent on fishing.Loss of traditional way of life and cultural identity for Maldivian fishermen. These factors highlight the dire consequences of overfishing and the sinking Maldives on the livelihoods of the Maldivian population, necessitating urgent action to address these issues.Increased VulnerabilityWith the loss of land and infrastructure due to severe erosion and the critical water shortage caused by the lack of access to fresh groundwater, the vulnerability of the Maldivian population is further exacerbated by the impact of climate change on coral reefs.Rising sea levels and increasing ocean temperatures have led to significant damage to the coral reefs surrounding the Maldives. Approximately 60% of these reefs have been bleached, posing a threat to marine life and the fishing industry, which is a vital source of income for many Maldivians. The deterioration of coral reefs not only disrupts the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem but also affects the availability of fish, a staple food for the population. This, combined with the loss of land and the critical water shortage, intensifies the vulnerability of the Maldivian people, who rely heavily on these resources for their livelihoods. The impact of climate change on the Maldives highlights the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies to ensure the well-being and sustainability of the population.Environmental Consequences of Sinking IslandsAs the Maldives Island sinks, the environmental consequences are becoming increasingly apparent. The sinking of islands, such as the Maldives, is primarily driven by the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels and increased frequency of extreme weather events are causing significant damage to this island nation. The environmental consequences of sinking islands can be devastating, with long-lasting effects. Here are three key consequences:Loss of Biodiversity: The Maldives is home to diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass beds. As the island sinks, these habitats are being submerged, leading to the loss of crucial biodiversity. Coral reefs, in particular, are highly sensitive to changes in water depth and quality, and their destruction can have a cascading effect on the entire marine ecosystem.Coastal Erosion and Land Loss: Rising sea levels contribute to coastal erosion, resulting in the loss of valuable land. The Maldives, being a low-lying island nation, is particularly vulnerable to land loss. As the land disappears, it not only affects the livelihoods of the local population but also exacerbates the risk of flooding and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources.Disruption of Natural Processes: Sinking islands disrupt natural processes that are vital for the functioning of ecosystems. For instance, the sinking of islands can alter tidal patterns and water flow, affecting the distribution of nutrients and sediment. These disruptions can have far-reaching consequences for the overall health and productivity of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The sinking of the Maldives Island serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of climate change on vulnerable island nations. Urgent action is needed to mitigate these consequences and protect the environment for future generations.Strategies for Mitigating the Sinking CrisisWhat strategies can be implemented to mitigate the sinking crisis of islands like the Maldives? The Maldives government, in response to the threat of rising sea levels and climate change, has been taking proactive measures to address the sinking crisis. These strategies can be categorized into three main areas: coastal protection, sustainable development, and international cooperation.Coastal protection is crucial in safeguarding the islands from the encroaching sea. The Maldives government has been investing in building seawalls and barriers to reduce the impact of waves and erosion. Additionally, they have implemented beach nourishment programs, where sand is replenished on the shores to counteract erosion and maintain the natural coastline.Sustainable development is another key strategy to mitigate the sinking crisis. The Maldives government has been focusing on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. They have also implemented strict regulations on waste management and sustainable tourism practices to minimize environmental degradation.International cooperation is vital in addressing the sinking crisis, as it is a global issue that requires collective action. The Maldives government has been actively participating in international climate change conferences and advocating for stronger commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They have also sought financial and technical assistance from international organizations and developed countries to support their adaptation and mitigation efforts. The table below provides a summary of the strategies implemented by the Maldives government to mitigate the sinking crisis:StrategyDescriptionExamplesCoastal ProtectionBuilding seawalls and barriers, implementing beach nourishment programsConstructing seawalls along vulnerable coastlines, replenishing eroded beaches with sandSustainable DevelopmentInvesting in renewable energy sources, implementing strict regulations on waste management and sustainable tourismInstalling solar panels, regulating waste disposal practices, promoting eco-friendly tourismInternational CooperationParticipating in climate change conferences, seeking financial and technical assistanceAdvocating for stronger commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, seeking support from international organizationsImplementing Adaptation Measures in the MaldivesIn order to address the sinking crisis in the Maldives, it's crucial to implement adaptation measures that can protect the coastal areas from further erosion and submergence.Coastal protection strategies, such as building seawalls and breakwaters, can help mitigate the impacts of rising sea levels.Additionally, investing in resilient infrastructure that can withstand the effects of climate change is essential for the long-term survival of the Maldives.Lastly, community-based adaptation initiatives that involve local communities in decision-making processes and empower them to implement sustainable practices can contribute to the overall resilience of the islands.Coastal Protection StrategiesCoastal protection strategies, such as implementing adaptation measures in the Maldives, have become crucial in addressing the urgent issue of sinking islands. With the Maldives being one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, it's essential to develop effective strategies to protect the coastal areas from further erosion and inundation. To tackle this pressing issue, the Maldivian government has embarked on a comprehensive coastal protection plan. This plan includes the following strategies:Building sea walls: Constructing barriers along the coastline to prevent waves from reaching the shore and causing erosion.Mangrove restoration: Planting and restoring mangrove forests to act as natural buffers against waves and storm surges.Land reclamation projects: Creating additional land by filling in areas with sand and sediment, providing a larger buffer zone against rising sea levels. These coastal protection strategies aim to safeguard the Maldivian islands and their communities from the devastating consequences of sinking islands. By implementing these adaptation measures, the Maldives can mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure the long-term resilience of their coastal areas.Building Resilient InfrastructureTo effectively address the urgent issue of sinking islands in the Maldives, the implementation of adaptation measures, specifically building resilient infrastructure, is crucial. The Maldives is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, with rising sea levels threatening its existence.Building resilient infrastructure is a proactive approach that can help mitigate the impacts of climate change and protect the Maldives from further sinking. This involves developing innovative engineering solutions, such as elevated roads and buildings, to ensure the country's sustainability and resilience.A new project focused on the development of resilient infrastructure is underway, aiming to strengthen the Maldives against the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.Community-Based Adaptation InitiativesCommunity-based adaptation initiatives in the Maldives are essential for implementing adaptation measures at the local level to address the impacts of climate change. This includes sea level rise and erosion, which pose significant threats to the vulnerable communities living on small islands in the Maldives. These initiatives aim to protect these communities and safeguard their livelihoods. To achieve this, the government of Maldives has implemented a National Adaptation Programme of Action. This programme seeks to advocate for global action on climate change and secure support for these community-based initiatives. The government recognizes the importance of addressing climate change on a global scale to effectively mitigate its impacts on vulnerable communities in the Maldives.Research and studies on climate change in the Maldives have been conducted to understand the local perceptions of climate change impacts. These studies also aim to develop sustainable solutions to address these impacts. One such solution includes the development of floating homes and artificial island construction to address the challenges faced by the Maldives in the face of rising sea levels.Additionally, the government is focusing on sustainable solutions for environmental challenges such as overfishing and waste management. These challenges not only impact the fishing industry, which is crucial for the livelihoods of many Maldivians, but also have adverse effects on the natural environment. The government recognizes the need to address these challenges in order to protect the delicate ecological balance of the Maldives.Importance of International Cooperation in Addressing the IssueInternational cooperation plays a crucial role in addressing the sinking of the Maldives island due to the collective efforts required to combat the impacts of climate change. The sinking of the Maldives is primarily caused by the rise in sea levels, which is a direct result of global climate change. As such, collaboration among nations becomes essential in implementing effective measures and policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions globally. The support and assistance from the international community are vital for the Maldives. This includes financial aid, technology transfer, and expertise to develop sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by climate change. The Maldives, being a small island nation, lacks the resources and capacity to tackle the issue on its own. International cooperation provides the necessary resources and knowledge-sharing platforms to address the sinking of the Maldives and other vulnerable island nations facing similar environmental threats.Multilateral partnerships and agreements are necessary to establish frameworks for addressing climate change impacts, including sea level rise. These partnerships allow for the development of coordinated strategies and actions that can benefit all parties involved. 2024.05.19 13:27 SoonGettingOuttaHere Why do you call it weaning when you're not actually weaning?

I've had some time to familiarize myself with this whole baby-led weaning thing, and, I must say, I am... a little confused.
First question is already in the title: Why do you call it weaning when you're not really weaning? In fact, not only are you NOT weaning, you are gradually increasing the amount of milk the baby gets, since the baby needs more nourishment as it grows, and you are ADAMANT that the "meals" (those aren't meals, but we'll come to that in a second) should not be a substitute for the milk intake. So, where does the weaning happen, then? And why are you so hostile to women who actually wean?
The principle behind this fad is that "food is only for fun in the first year". Isn't that a little reckless and short-sighted considering the obesity statistics in the US? Food is not for fun. Food is for nourishment. It is not for playing around and smearing it all over yourself and your surroundings. Not to mention how insensitive this notion is to people in countries where they cannot even adequately provide food for eating, let alone for playing.
Those aren't meals, and you know it. And no, your baby is not eating "the same thing as everyone else in the family". Your baby is getting bland ingredients, while everyone else is getting a composition. If you eat flour, then an egg and then sugar, is it the same to you as eating a cake? On top of this, you are mocking your child by giving them things you know they can't actually eat yet. They just get to chew around on it for a bit before you throw it all in the trash. And then you feel superior to mothers who actually go the extra mile and lovingly prepare a delicious puree meal for their little one that they can actually eat.
I'd really love to understand the reasoning behind this approach, as, to me, it seems incredibly wasteful, pointless and inconsiderate.

Key Takeaways:

What is Batana Oil?

Batana Oil, also known as Miskito Oil, is a natural oil derived from the nuts of the American palm tree, Elaeis Oleifera, native to Central America, particularly Honduras. It has been traditionally used by the Miskito people for its therapeutic properties in promoting hair and skin health.
For centuries, the Miskito people have treasured Batana Oil for its deeply rooted cultural significance. This ancestral knowledge and tradition have been passed down through generations, highlighting the deep connection between the people and this natural remedy. The process of extracting the oil is a meticulous craft, involving traditional methods that honor the palm tree's natural gifts. The rich nutrients present in Batana Oil make it a versatile elixir for skin rejuvenation and hair nourishment. Its moisturizing properties are renowned for promoting healthy hair growth and providing a radiant complexion.

How is Batana Oil Made?

Batana Oil is extracted through a cold pressing technique from the nuts of the American palm tree, Elaeis Oleifera, to preserve its nutrients and natural properties. This traditional method of oil extraction ensures the oil retains its therapeutic benefits.
The process of making Batana Oil through cold pressing involves carefully selecting ripe Elaeis Oleifera nuts, which are then cracked open to reveal the kernels inside. These kernels are sun-dried before being cold pressed to extract the precious oil, ensuring that the nutrients and therapeutic properties are well-preserved. This method, commonly practiced in Central America, where the American palm tree is prevalent, is known for producing high-quality oil rich in nutrients essential for nourishing and rejuvenating the skin and hair.

What are the Benefits of Batana Oil?

Batana Oil offers numerous benefits for hair and scalp health, including promoting hair growth, nourishing the scalp with essential fatty acids like omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9, providing antioxidants for hair health, and adding shine to hair affected by environmental influences.
Originating from the lush Mediterranean region, Batana Oil has been used for centuries as a holistic solution for maintaining healthy and vibrant hair. Its natural composition not only accelerates hair growth but also aids in deeply penetrating the scalp to nourish and rejuvenate hair follicles.

Promotes Hair Growth

Batana Oil stimulates hair growth by nourishing the follicles and roots with essential nutrients, promoting stronger and healthier hair growth.
One of the key factors that make Batana Oil effective for hair growth is its ability to deeply penetrate the hair follicles and strengthen the roots. This process not only encourages faster hair growth but also helps prevent hair breakage and split ends. By delivering essential nutrients such as Vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants directly to the hair follicles, Batana Oil revitalizes the scalp, creating an optimal environment for hair growth to thrive.

Moisturizes and Nourishes Hair

Batana Oil serves as an excellent moisturizer that deeply nourishes the hair, providing essential hydration and combating frizziness. It acts as a natural conditioning oil for smoother and healthier hair.
The unique composition of Batana Oil allows it to penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, delivering nutrients that strengthen and repair damaged strands. This botanical oil is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, which help to restore the hair's natural shine and vitality.
Regular use of Batana Oil can improve the overall health of your hair, making it more manageable and less prone to breakage. Whether you have dry, brittle hair or just need a boost of moisture, this oil is a versatile solution for all your hair care needs.

Reduces Dandruff and Scalp Irritation

Batana Oil aids in reducing dandruff and scalp irritation by restoring the scalp's microbial balance, offering therapeutic benefits for scalp health.
When the scalp's natural microbial balance is disrupted, issues like dandruff and irritation can arise. Batana Oil's unique properties help in rebalancing these microorganisms, thus calming the scalp and reducing discomfort. Its therapeutic uses extend beyond mere symptom relief, as the oil's nourishing components penetrate deep into the skin, enriching it with essential nutrients for long-lasting health. By incorporating Batana Oil into your hair care routine, you are not just tackling the visible signs of scalp issues but also nurturing and maintaining a harmonious environment on your scalp.

What are the Side Effects of Batana Oil?

While Batana Oil offers numerous benefits, some individuals may experience side effects such as allergic reactions, particularly those with hereditary hair loss concerns. Proper skin care is essential when using this oil.
Allergic reactions to Batana Oil can manifest as skin redness, itching, or swelling. It is important to conduct a patch test before applying the oil liberally to avoid adverse skin reactions.
Individuals with hereditary hair loss should consult their dermatologist before incorporating Batana Oil into their hair care routine.

Allergic reactions to Batana Oil can manifest as redness, itching, swelling, or even hives on the skin. These reactions are typically more common in individuals with sensitive skin or existing allergies. Despite the potential for allergic reactions, Batana Oil also offers numerous therapeutic benefits, including promoting hair growth, reducing inflammation, and improving overall scalp health.

Greasiness and Build-up

Excessive use of Batana Oil may lead to greasiness and build-up on the scalp, potentially causing irritation and other hair problems. It is advisable to use the oil in moderation.
While Batana Oil holds numerous benefits for hair, including nourishment and hydration, excessive application can have adverse effects. The build-up of oil on the scalp can clog pores, leading to scalp irritation and even hair loss over time. This greasiness not only makes the hair appear unwashed but also attracts dirt and pollutants, further exacerbating the situation.
To prevent these issues, it is crucial to strike a balance in the usage of Batana Oil, ensuring that it benefits the hair without causing any harm.

How to Use Batana Oil?

Batana Oil can be used in various ways for optimal results. It can be applied as a nourishing hair mask, a leave-in treatment for added hydration, or as a pre-shampoo treatment to protect the hair's natural nutrients.
When using Batana Oil as a hair mask, it provides deep conditioning benefits, revitalizing dry and damaged hair, leaving it soft and manageable. As a leave-in treatment, Batana Oil helps to lock in moisture, tame frizz, and promote healthy shine. Alternatively, incorporating Batana Oil into your hair care routine as a pre-shampoo treatment creates a protective barrier against the harsh effects of shampooing, ensuring that the hair retains its essential nutrients.

After application, leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes to allow it to penetrate the hair shaft and nourish deeply. For enhanced effectiveness, you can wrap your hair in a warm towel or use a shower cap to create heat and enhance absorption.
Rinsing off the Batana Oil hair mask with a gentle shampoo and conditioner will leave your hair feeling soft, silky, and deeply moisturized.

Fertility Treatments
Her bullshit tirade tonight about the comments on her body is just ridiculous. But then she states she’s going through FERTILITY TREATMENTS. Her doc is all sorts of unethical to be letting this woman with a BLATANT ED (lie to yourself all you want LKS, you know it’s true) go through fertility treatments nine months after giving birth. Shame on her and shame on that doctor.

2024.05.18 23:31 ten_yachtz How Are You Getting Your Nutrition In?

A big part of my health journey over the last few years (I have Long Covid) has been about building a solid foundation of nourishing foods into my day to day. This has looked like incorporating wide varieties of plants into my diet for antioxidants and tracking protein intake to support my strength goals in the gym/sport.
So as a FTM I am completely blown away by how powerful the food aversions are. It's like almost every food is revolting -- and powerfully so. I'm talking the mere THOUGHT of an aversive food can send me, let alone the reality of it being within the walls of my house 😱
I am curious how you all are navigating nutritional intake alongside these aversions? What foods are working for you? How are you preparing them? How are you meal planning for the week knowing one day you may wake up and believe eggs to be the spawn of Satan? Are you doing anything interesting to save/preserve foods if you grocery shop aspirationally and your body has a different idea by the time midweek rolls around?
I'll start.
For me here's what is working (theme is TANG/SOUR): - Watermelon, pineapple cut into chunks - Strawberries and blueberries (some days with greek yogurt, some days greek yogurt can GFY) - Guacamole (must be pretty limey/citrusy) - Siete Beans seem to be pretty solid - Applesauce - String cheese - Grilled chicken or steak - Salmon sashimi (high quality, ymmv and all that) but ABSOLUTELY NOT cooked salmon (🤷‍♀️) - Grilled broccolini - Mandarins - Turkey sandwich with mustard - Smoothie with protein powder, oats, frozen cauliflower, frozen berries, peanut butter
I cannot even make eye contact with salad greens or eggs or bone brotg, which is so sad for me because they have been a huge staple in my diet for YEARS.
Anyway, what's working for you? What tips/tricks do you have for getting in those sweet n00ts?

2024.05.18 21:55 VolkerBach In Praise of the Pig (c. 1340)

In Praise of the Pig (c. 1340)
https://www.culina-vetus.de/2024/05/18/in-praise-of-the-pig/
The König vom Odenwald is finished, but I will still need to do some work on the final edit and think about what to do with it. Meanwhile, here is another poem in praise of the pig:
https://preview.redd.it/jmuk8m0ip81d1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ac485fda4996e589c1fb007c5c6e225eec5fab3
IX This is a poem about the pig
And its usefulness
And it was made skilfully
By the kunig vom Otenwalde
As I have nothing new at this time
Many people say: “Very well,
We should have something new,
Kunig, make us a new poem!”
If I have to write something new
I will write about the pig.
Their squealing should gladly be tolerated
Sour liver (lebersoln) come from them
Filled and roasted
Happy are those who have them!
Boiled and smoked
They lose none of their virtue.
Now I should look at
Sausages in four manners
Made with brain and with blood
And also hot liver sausages
And sausages of sheer meat (brod = brät)
Those last long
Roasts by the embers
Give you joy
Bread catching dripping (betreift sniten) underneath
It is no wonder
Head, ears, tail, feet
And one part it digs with (the snout)
And the four pig legs
In vinegar and galantine
Tongue, spleen, and stomach
Of this, I, the kunig, must say
Of this come side dishes
Now hark what I say!
You also use the bladder well
Wherever it is useful.
You have bacon with peas
In your chickens and on a spit
And where there are boiled chickens
You must have bacon and parsley with them.
Further, I always serve
Fried lardons (grieben) in mus and on porridge
Pancakes and filled fritters (krepfelin)
All come from the pig
Dumplings from the rump (buzl)
Appear to be so small
But they are noble (like) venison (wiltbreht).
I will tell you more about the pig:
Shoulders and hams
Nourish nursemaids and women in childbed
Fat cabbage (kruot) come from the pig
Bride and bridegroom eat of that
This is common custom.
All foods are improved with it
Adding a little bacon to fish
I never forget to do this
Use your teeth if you can
Women and men both!
To use the large bellies and lard
You must have salt
You use it to smear on many things
Wagon sides (leitern) so they become smooth
Books, saddles, bucklers,
are protected steadily (by greasing)
And smiths always wear
A (pig)skin apron over their skin
Straps on the helm
Are carried on the field
Points and straps
Are inexpensively bought
The strop for the razor
I have heard and seen this
Is needed to swipe over often
When you wish to shave beards.
You also find, made of the skin
Belts, broad and narrow
I also tell you of the bristles
That they are used to brush hair
And every cobbler
Cannot be without bristles
Weavers and painters, too
Have need of bristles
And also every goldsmith
Works with them.
With bristles you make
Glasses clean, if you know how
And the noble bristles are
Put into the holy water sprinkler
Which is used in good intent
So God may have us in his protection.
The kunig has made this poem
Whoever can write a better one should do so.
This poem completes the series praising domestic animals, following the cow, goose, chicken, and sheep. While it mentions technical applications for pig products, its main focus lies on food. Pigs were kept primarily for eating.
The defense of the pig whose squealing seems to have annoyed people begins with a mention of lebersoln. I am not fully sure what these are, but I suspect it is a reference to the frequently attested roasted mashed liver wrapped in a caul. That certainly seems to have been a popular and exclusive dish. Sausages, made with brain, liver, blood, or sheer meat, are specifically addressed as four main types. This seems to be a mental classification that was current. We have surviving recipes for blood sausages, liver sausages, and the high-status bratwurst made from muscle meat. Some surviving recipes involving brain, too, may describe sausages, but I am less confident in identifying those. The poem does not mention lung sausages, a type we have several surviving recipes for. That may be owed to local custom, personal dislike, lack of status, or any other reason you care to imagine. Certainly people ate every part of the pig, and sausage making was a creative discipline.
Next, the poem mentions roast pork and the joy of eating the drippings with bread – betreift sniten possibly placed under the roast during cooking, though in my opinion more likely spread on toasted slices or loaves afterwards. I can attest to the fact that this is delicious. The feet, snout, ears and tail are cooked in a galantine. This is harder to interpret than it seems because the various words used to describe jelly today could refer to gelatin, but also to thickened sauces at the time. Clearly, though, these fiddly meat bits were cooked, taken apart, and served in an accressible and highly seasoned form.
The next section addresses bacon (speck), a useful ingredient in all kinds of dishes. This could refer to anything from mostly meaty salt-cured pork belly to mostly fat, white Rückenspeck. Interpreting individual recipes can be fraught that way, but it is likely cooks chose what they found served best. One especially interesting note is the poet’s injunction that boiled chicken must always be served with bacon and parsley (here likely meaning the root boiled with the meat). There may be the germ of a recipe in this line. Pig fat is also used as a cooking medium, which provides the connection to pancakes and the broad class of krepfelin fritters. The word usually means a filled fritter like a dumpling, but is often used for other kinds of fritter as well. The lardons (grieben) produced when rendering lard were another way of adding meaty richness to non-meat dishes, served with porridges and vegetable purees.
Two social practices are mentioned as asides: Pork shoulders and ham, probably dry-salted and smoked, are served to nursing mothers and fat kraut, most likely a cabbage dish, at weddings. We have other mentions of this and it seems to have been a custom early on. Addiong bacon to fish while culinarily plausible seems a daring suggestion given that fish was mainly eaten during Lent. It would not be a problem on meat days, obviously, so such recipes likely existed, but to find it stated as common practice in a clerical environment is a slight surprise.
What follows is a list of technical applications: Pigskin used in aprons razor, strops, helmet straps, and all kinds of other roles, pig fat for greasing leather, and bristles for sewing, in brushes, and in holy water sprinklers, the noblest avocation a humble pig could aspire to. Interestingly, we also learn that drinking glasses, still a luxury item, were kept clean using brushes. This kind of detail makes reading the König’s poems so rewarding.
Der König vom Odenwald (literally king of the Odenwald, a mountain chain in southern Germany) is an otherwise unknown poet whose work is tentatively dated to the 1340s. His title may refer to a senior rank among musicians or entertainers, a Spielmannskönig, but that is speculative. Many of his poems are humorous and deal with aspects of everyday life which makes them valuable sources to us today.
The identity of this poet has been subject to much speculation. He is clearly associated with the episcopal court at Würzburg and likely specifically with Michael de Leone (c. 1300-1355), a lawyer and scholar. Most of his work is known only through the Hausbuch of the same Michael de Leone, a collection of verse and practical prose that also includes the first known instance of the Buoch von guoter Spise, a recipe collection. This and the evident relish with which he describes food have led scholars to consider him a professional cook and the author of the Buoch von Guoter Spise, but that is unlikely. Going by the content of his poetry, the author is clearly familiar with the lives of the lower nobility and even his image of poverty is genteel. This need not mean he belonged to this class, but he clearly moved in these circles to some degree. Michael de Leone, a secular cleric and canon on the Würzburg chapter, was of that class and may have been a patron of the poet. Reinhardt Olt whose edition I am basing my translation on assumes that the author was a fellow canon, Johann II von Erbach.
I only translate the poems that deal with aspects of food or related everyday life here. There are several others which are less interesting as sources. They can be found in the newest extant edition by Reinhard Olt, König vom Odenwald; Gedichte, Carl Winter Verlag, Heidelberg 1988.

Christ is risen, dear brothers and sisters! Today, on the day of commemoration of the Holy Great Martyr Irene and on the day of honoring the Most Holy Mother of God for the sake of Her miracle-working icon, called “The Inexhaustible Cup", the Gospel of John is read during the divine service (John 6: 14-27).
14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that Prophet that should come into the world.
15 When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.Jesus Walks on the Sea(Matthew 14.22-27; Mark 6.45-52)
16 And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
17 and entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Caper´na-um. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.
18 And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
19 So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
20 But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
22 The day following, when the people, which stood on the other side of the sea, saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone;
23 (howbeit there came other boats from Tibe´ri-as nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:)
24 when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Caper´na-um, seeking for Jesus.
25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?
26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
27 Labor not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
After the miracle of the feeding of more than five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, a wave of rejoicing broke out among the people to bring Christ to power and make Him king. But the Lord, not wishing to indulge in false ideas about the Messiah as an earthly king, withdrew again to the mountain alone (John 6, 15).
St. John Chrysostom writes: “They no longer defend the law, they no longer pay attention to the violation of the Sabbath, they are no longer jealous for God: they have abandoned everything as soon as the womb was full. Christ has also become a prophet to them, and they want to make Him king; but He refuses. Why? To teach us to despise worldly honors, and to show that He has no need of earthly things."
The disciples, leaving Christ on the mountain, went down to the sea and got into a boat and went to the other side of the sea, to Capernaum (John 6:16-17). At that time a strong wind arose and the waves raged. The evangelist John notes that the disciples had already sailed twenty-five or thirty stadia, that is, about six kilometers, when they saw Jesus walking on the sea and approaching the boat (John 6:19). Christ saw them distressed in their voyage, the boat was in the middle of the sea, it was beaten by the waves, because the wind was against them. Wherefore the Savior went to them through the sea.
Blessed Theophylact notes that Christ “allowed them to experience the storm in order that, when after the storm there should be silence, they might be more glad of what had happened, and that an indelible remembrance of it might be engraved in their hearts. When they were in danger, He appeared before them and drove away their fear by His word, and caused silence on the sea, and thus created a twofold silence: He tamed the confusion in their souls and the turbulence on the sea”.
The crowd of many thousands of people stayed overnight on the same deserted shore where the miracle of the feeding had taken place. All saw that only one boat stood near the shore, and that the disciples of the Savior entered that boat and sailed away, while Christ Himself went to the mountain. The next morning people apparently looked for Jesus, but did not find him. On boats that came from Tiberias, a city on the western shore of the sea, many went to Capernaum, wanting to find the Savior.
When they found Him, they asked, “Rabbi, when did You come here?” (John 6:25). Perfectly understanding the mood of the crowd that was looking for Him, the Lord said, “You are not looking for Me because you have seen miracles, but because you have eaten bread and have been fed (John 6, 26).
In His further words, the Savior calls us to think not of perishable food, which a man who does not know God seeks to satiate himself with, and which perishes with the body, but of that which endures forever and will serve for spiritual satiation.
We, dear brothers and sisters, should remember that man cannot do without the spiritual food that gives eternal life, that is, without Christ Himself. Those who are nourished by His pure Body and Blood can taste and see how good the Lord is. It is in this way that the Savior not only opens to those who believe the possibility of abiding in the presence of God, but also grants them union with Him in the sacrament of the Eucharist.
Help us in this, risen Lord!

2024.05.18 20:15 decaguard NORMAN WALKER ON IMPORTANCE OF RAW PLANT FOODS

NORMAN WALKER ON IMPORTANCE OF RAW PLANT FOODS
HOW TO KNOW WHAT TO EAT AND HOW TO LIVE
The fundamental purpose of eating is to replenish the chemical elements composing the cells and tissues in our body. Replenishment is one of the basic laws of Nature in regard to organic chemistry, and our physical body is a laboratory functioning under organic chemistry principles.

The food that we eat should nourish these cells and tissues. Unfortunately, because Nature gave to man a body so elastic, so far as taking punishment is concerned, that it can survive for years on food which is destructive to the body, but appealing to his appetite and palate, man has indulged these appetites until the race is perceptibly degenerating physically.

The body is the vehicle of the mind, and the mind is the vehicle of the intellect. The intellect is that part of the mind that we use in observing and reasoning.

If the body is permitted to degenerate, then the intellect cannot be expected to function or develop constructively, as the spiritual and mental faculties in man grow and expand in direct relation to the improvement, regeneration and purity of the physical body.

We look on sickness and disease as something mysterious and dreadful and we blame germs and bacteria.

As a matter of fact germs and bacteria are the scavengers of Nature and are everywhere. When we breathe, we inhale millions of these little natural scavengers and it is their function to keep the debris in our body neutralized and to stir it up so that it can be eliminated from the body. It is our job, however, to keep our body in such condition that this elimination can be completed to perfection.

Due to the excessive quantity of inorganic food that we eat, food in which the life principle has been destroyed by cooking, canning, and other processes, this debris, or end-product of the digestion of this food, in the body, accumulates faster than we and these natural scavengers can remove it. The result is that germs and bacteria find a feeding ground within us in which to propagate. In this process of their propagation the sewage of their colonies is added to the debris and the result s what we call sickness or disease.

Whenever germs and bacteria enter a body which is thoroughly clean and healthy, within and without, they find no feeding ground of waste or morbid matter therein on which to colonize and therefore pass out of the system in the natural course of events.

Likewise, when all debris and accumulated morbid matter is removed from a sick or diseased body, then only is the first step established toward a recovery to a normal chemical balance.

How does this debris and morbid matter get into the body? In two distinct ways.

First, through the food which is eaten to excess in inorganic form (cooked, etc.) which can neither be assimilated by the body for constructive purposes, nor be properly eliminated; and also by such unnatural elements as serums, vaccines, injections, etc. These cause deposits which the body is unable to throw off in the course of its normal functions, if the eliminative channels are in any way impaired.

Second, through the cells and tissues of the body which in the course of our activities are constantly used up and remain there as dead matter after furnishing physical and mental energy. These used-up cells should leave the body as soon as possible after they have served their function, but they remain in the system for unnecessarily long periods of time due to faulty elimination.

We can give here only briefly a few of the interesting reasons why nourishing the body properly is of such vital importance. A brief outline of the process that causes the greatest accumulation of debris in the body is necessary so that we may be guided intelligently in the selection and combination of our foods.

Let us take, for example, an individual, 40 years of age. Undoubtedly like the majority of his fellow men he has formed the habit of eating at least three meals a day. This will average more than 1,000 meals a year, or in excess of 40,000 meals during his lifetime of 40 years. It is very important that we bear this in mind.

We will also assume that, like most people, nearly all the food he has eaten has been cooked, canned or otherwise processed, and rarely, if ever, does he eat either a sufficient quantity of raw food, or a complete meal of nothing but raw vegetables and fruits. The result therefore is that more than 40,000 meals, composed mostly of dead food (or inorganic chemical elements) have passed through his system during that time.

It is impossible to regenerate organic cells in a human body with inorganic (or dead) matter. We find that while the 40,000 meals did serve the purpose of sustaining life, hardly any nourishment in organic form was eaten to regenerate the cells and tissues of his body or supply the chemical elements composing these.

As a matter of fact it is appalling to realize that the limit of tolerance of such a condition is usually reached by the time we are 40 or 50 years of age. The age at which mature judgment and experience have been gained, a period in life when we should know what life has in store for us, the very prime of life, but the age at which most men and women find themselves with a neglected body which is degenerating rapidly and is no longer an efficient vehicle in which to put that knowledge and experience into practical use, speedily heading for premature senility and the discard.

We know that the body requires fiber. The error in judgment is in the interpretation of what function the fiber is intended to perform. To be of any value whatever, the fiber in our food must be composed of the raw cellulose, or fiber, of raw vegetables and fruits eaten as nearly as possible in their natural ripe state.

When so eaten, after proper mastication, the digestive processes extract as many as possible of the chemical elements contained in the fibers. The remaining fiber goes through the intestines becoming, figuratively speaking, highly magnetized by means of the muscular kneading of their peristaltic action. Thus they draw into the intestines from every part of the body the used-up cells and tissues, eliminating these, as well as the debris resulting from normal digestion and the end-products thereof, through the colon, thereby acting both as an intestinal broom and as a vacuum cleaner.

When food has been cooked or processed in any manner or form, however, the fiber or cellulose is converted into an inorganic substance in which every vestige of life has been destroyed. The fiber being lifeless therefore can no longer work as a broom or as a vacuum cleaner, but operates instead like a mop (usually a slimy one) pushing matter along without any cleansing effect. Due to lack of magnetic attraction, which cannot be generated in dead fiber, it has no ability whatsoever to draw into the intestines used up cells and tissues from other parts of the body, nor any other toxic matter which may have accumulated therein.

Consider these two pictures. On the one hand an abundance of raw fibers passing through the digestive and eliminative tracts, acting as a cleansing broom and as a vacuum cleaner after every meal, three times a day, leaving not only a clean intestinal tract each time but also removing from the system other accumulated waste matter. On the other hand visualize the fiber of cooked, devitalized food (nearly always in excessive quantities) passing through the intestines and eliminative organs three times a day - 40,000 times or more in 40 years-every time leaving a coating. 40,000 coatings, be they ever so thin, are bound to leave their mark.

Man is the only member of the animal kingdom who, notwithstanding his supposedly higher intelligence, indulges his appetites at the expense of his body, and pampers these deliberately, without using common sense or good judgment, listening to the silky voice of deception telling him that food has nothing to do with the condition of his body.

With such a lack of knowledge it is not surprising that just when we have reached the age when our knowledge and experience are of value to us, for us to use to advantage, and we are really anxious to begin to LIVE, we find ourselves handicapped with a physical body which is ready for the discard, if not for the grave.

The problem therefore is to know how to change our eating habits to regenerate our body, without too much discomfort, and reactions too strong for the comfort of the mind or the vicissitudes of our daily life, and what will enable us to achieve eventually a healthy body free from fatigue, sickness and disease.

2024.05.18 20:04 Horror-Cut-6375 My 3 years old refuse to eat most proteins. I don’t know what to feed her.

My daughter won’t eat any type of food that smells, no beef, chicken, cheese, she also doesn’t like legumes, the only proteins she will eat it’s some yogurts depending on the bread and how it smells, milk and peanut butter which I don’t wanna give her so much because oxalates and most have seed oils. I’m a little confused about what to feed her all she wants to eat is noodles, fruits, pancakes, cereal with milk and peanut butter bread. To me this diet doesn’t seem healthy or balance enough but she refuses everything else no matter how much I try. She’s growing fine she’s very tall and it’s on the right weight but I wish she would eat more nourishing food. Any advice?

2024.05.18 17:50 venicechick1949 What to eat and when does it get easier to eat?

I had my upper arch extracted on Thursday and an immediate denture. I went in yesterday morning for adjustments and they said it looked fine. It actually feels fine except for one sore spot. No pain except for when I eat. Obviously can’t eat any solid food so I’ve been living off low calorie ice cream and noodles. Idk what else to eat and I’m worried because I start a new job on Tuesday which is going to be a very physically active job so I have to be well nourished and I really struggle when I’m hungry. When were you able to eat solid food and do you have any advice on what I can eat while my extractions heel?

2024.05.18 16:49 jonf00 Nausea : help from partner

Hello,
My spouse is in her 14th week of pregnancy. She has extreme fatigue and nausea in the evening. She also had a few very bad migraines since she became pregnant, especially in the last couple days.
When does this end? How can I help?
She says I help plenty and is grateful for taking care of her but can’t help to feel powerless….
Any food and beverage suggestions to keep her and the baby hydrated and semi nourished . She’s usually a pretty healthy eater outside her love for Coca-Cola. She seems to tolerate salty foods and soda well. Especially cherry coke and all dressed potato chips.
