2024.06.02 21:01 Classic-Grape-4360 AITAH for being honest about my career at my middle school reunion?

A couple of weeks ago, I (25F) attended my 10 year middle school reunion. While I initially didn’t get any indication that I had pissed people off, I have recently received multiple messages from people telling me I was being arrogant and insensitive at the reunion party. I am genuinely unsure whether I did anything wrong, and would really appreciate some input.
For context - I am from a small town in a European country, that while being somewhat picturesque and charming, is for a lack of a better word extremely ‘white trash’. Substance abuse issues are extremely common (especially meth addiction), as is teenage pregnancy, petty crime etc. I lived there up until the end of middle school, when I chose to move cities by myself so that I could attend a university-preparing high school (the schools in my town only offered vocational high school degrees that would have not allowed me to go on to attend university. I loved school and going to university was my absolute dream.) I kept in contact with some of my middle school friends, but since I don’t really use social media I lost contact with most of my childhood friends. In my country, we end middle school at 15/16 and we are now 25, so earlier this year someone from my class invited us all for a 10 year reunion during the Easter holidays. I was going to visit some of the few friends and family I have left in the town around the same time, so I agreed to attend.
The reunion was a good time. A lot of people had already had several kids and gotten married, and it was really sweet seeing pictures of people’s children and hearing about their lives after not having seen them for so long. We also all asked about each other’s work/careers, which I assume is a super common reunion question. Since my town is a bit of a ‘dead end’ place most people had very standard jobs which you don’t need any higher education to do: carpenter, electrician, mechanic, hairdresser etc. While some people had started bachelors degrees, it quickly became clear that I was the only one who had obtained a university degree in the room. A lot of my former classmates were also unemployed, and had clearly had severe struggles with meth abuse, periods of homelessness, incarceration etc. A lot of people still seemed to live in the low-cost social housing complexes where I also grew up.
This is where I might have acted like an asshole. When people asked me what I have been up to since I left, I answered matter-of-factly and honestly. Since moving, I ended up doing very well in high school. Because of my good grades, I was able to get a scholarship and move abroad to attend a very famous elite university (think Harvard, MIT..). I developed a burning passion for my subject and got funding to go to a different (equally famous and elite) university where I did my masters degree and eventually PhD. I was stoked to get my doctorate while still being so young, and am currently doing a postdoc and lecturing at the same university. Additionally, I work part-time for a very famous international organisation (think the World Bank, IMF-type organisation), as an associate researcher. Although I didn’t say all this when people asked me about my life, I very straightforwardly said the names of the university and organisation I work for. I considered not saying it as to not come across as braggy, but ultimately decided that it would be best to just be honest about my life. I am an extremely bad liar and it just seemed too awkward to try and avoid the topic of my career. While no one made negative comments at the time about this, I got some very shocked and loud reactions about this at the time. But my hometown friends are now saying I was rubbing my success in the face of the rest of the class and taking away the spotlight from the mothers in the room that also deserved that kind of attention. They said it was insensitive to be so transparent about my life when I know how difficult life is for most people in my hometown. One friend even accused me of ‘forgetting my roots’.
What makes me even more assholey potentially, is that I also think I subconsciously wanted to let some of my former classmates know how well I was doing in my life due to how they treated me in the past. I came out as a lesbian very young and my classmates treated me like trash for it. I was beat up more than once after school, the other girls stopped inviting me over to their homes, and only two classmates really stayed friends with me (the ones who are still my friends today). The day I moved away, the ‘queen bee’ of my middle school told me that no matter how far I moved she wanted me to remember that I would always be a ‘trailer park d*ke’ no matter what. I think part of the reason why I chose to flaunt my career - and my stunning girlfriend on top of that - is that I wanted to rub it in how wrong she was. When I saw her at the reunion, she had clearly struggled with substance abuse issues and was apparently on her 3rd marriage. I would lie if I said that didn’t give me some level of sick satisfaction. I never brought up my accomplishments without someone asking me first - but now I’m starting to wonder if I should have kept my mouth shut. So, am I the asshole?
(Also - I am typing this on my phone while in a moving car, so sorry for any grammar mistakes and bad language.)

2024.06.02 20:50 Emotional_Peace_4290 Update: reviews of bangalore days, ustad hotel and Kumbalangi Nights

First of all, I really like your wedding styles and would love to attend one.( preferably a rough and desi wedding) once in my lifetime. I want to wear those lungis and traditional clothes. Hehe, seems too much fun.
Well as I said I will write a reviews of all film i watch so I binged watcg this three today. Let's get into it.
Bangalore Days: At first, I thought it was just going to be some fun flick, but wow! It was really something else. I ended up crying a little at the end (I just love Disney happy endings). Fafa is amazing as usual, but it was different from his action star role in Avesham.
I loved all three main characters; their differences yet strong friendship take the story to another level. I enjoyed the whole fun part in Bangalore, and then boom, some serious stuff went down, but they didn’t forget to joke around. Overall, a good movie. For cons, it was a bit too long for such a simple story. 4/5 for me.
Ustad Hotel: I knew something fun was going to happen at the start, but I still laughed so hard. As expected, it starts with fun and then places you in the characters' backstories and situations. Ustad was a great mentor and kind chef. Those lessons about cooking and why we cook really hit home, you know?
I really loved the actor (two movies and he’s in both), and he delivered a good performance nevertheless. I liked the ending and how everything worked out. The romance was kind of a miss here (though the actress is totally 10/10 🙈).
Kumbalangi Nights: Okay, whatever this movie is about, the place has my heart. What a beautiful place! And the Bobby guy, getting high and doing nothing—I feel you, my man. This place is 100% for chilling, nothing serious.
The whole brother dynamic started with fights and sadness but leaves you on a great note. I hoped there would be more story around Frankie, but we got Saji and Bobby. You start to hate Soubin Shahir's character in every movie at first, but the character development was too good. How Bobby got a baby and a job, how Saji became responsible. Boney and his girlfriend came out of nowhere, but yeah, good one.
And and Fafa... my man is a legend! He was scary as hell. How he groomed his moustache and all those looks—dude is a legit gangster. The worst time to propose: when he is shaving you and you’re asking for his sister-in-law’s hand... lmao! No words. Give a raise to the guy who chose the BGM, legend. Expected yet terrific end sequence. Loved this one. 4.5/5
Well, I had so much fun. Next weekend next three movies. Tell me how you liked this movies as well. Or some fun fact(maybe something traditional because I watched it with eng sub so..) Do you guys use letterboxd? Share ids.
thank you guys :)

2024.06.02 19:55 NomadicNarwhal7 "Bakit 'di ka nag-law school?"

Just another after 10 pm thought. I really just want to get this off my chest. What if tinuloy ko mag-law school? (WARNING: Long read)
Almost 1 year na since my graduation. Most of my blockmates from college are done with their final exams in law school. I wish them nothing, but success and happiness. Hopefully, they'll all be regular 2nd year law students next school year.
For some context of why and how I feel like shit rn. Here's a very short summary of my past: Ganado pa ako sa buhay noong 1st year college e. Determinado akong mag-law school kayat dali-dali akong nag-enroll aking pre-law course.
Then the pandemic happened. I lost all hope. Truth be told, if 'di nangyari 'yung pandemic baka nag-shift ako. Dahil alam ko sa sarili ko na bagsako ako sa 3 majors subjects ko noong 1st year 2nd sem. But I got saved by the bell. Instead of failed, dropped o INC, PASSED ang nakasulat sa grading report ko. Hanggang nagtuloy-tuloy na. From 2nd year, nag-3rd year to 4th year GRADUATING student real quick.
All kinds of shit went down noong nag-4th year na ako. I've already lost hope noong pandemic. Noong 4th year na ako?, I just didn't give a damn anymore. Bagsako kung bagsako, pasado kung pasado- bathala na. And then, boom! Pasado ('wag niyo na po akong tanongin on how I managed to pass. 'di ko rin po alam).
I got a job after graduation. Made some money, paid the bills, helped around the house and got to buy the shit I wanted at the time. But the most important thing that job gave me was clarity and realization. "I'm not built for law school", kako sa sarili ko. I finally accepted it and moved on. I resigned after 5 months. Kumuha ng educ units sa may local university namin 'cause I got bored and I wanted to feel in college again ( I know, it's stupid and immature. Don't you think I already know that?). Took the CSE and passed. Kakatapos lang ng semester, and decided i'm not gonna pursue that LPT.
Now, I'm a certified tambay. Nilalakad ko palang ang mga papers ko for employment so at least I'm not going to be a certified tambay in the nearer future.
And now, here I am. In bed, reminiscing and thinking about my what ifs in life. What if nag-law school din ako?
Masaya siguro na mahirap. Mostly mahirap, but worth it naman sa huli. Alam ko naman sa sarili ko na 'di ko kaya 'yung sakripisyo at dedication compared to other law students out there. I've been reading less and less, mostly because whenever I do my brain multiplies in being annoying and not shutting up of its thoughts. Rather than reading, improving my mind, I've been playing too much video games. Too much basketball, too much of this too much of that. Way too much distractions. Eventually, mawawala ako sa focus if I did decide to go to law school.
"Bakit mo sinasabi agad na 'di mo kaya kung 'di mo pa naman sinsubukan?" Y'all have a point there, but kilala ko sarili ko e. I know I cant give up playing video games and playing sports. Hanging out with friends doing God knows what in the middle of the night. Ayaw ko rin sinasakripisyo ang tulog para lang mag-aral. Tamad ko nga raw mag-aral e sabi ng mga high school prof ko (pakyu sila may degree na ako). Overall, I'm lazy. I get distracted too easily. I give up too early, and try to do less most of the time. I'm impatient. I'm incapable of adapting learning strategies and style benefiting a law student. I have all of these negative capabilities. Obviously, 'di talaga nababagay. Pero what if? Wala naman sigurong mawawala saakin kung mag-what if lang ako. Eventually, I'll stop siguro. Soon, magiging okay rin ako. But for now, what if?
What if tinuloy ko mag-law school?

2024.06.02 19:50 Acrobatic_Event_2552 Why I think Trump is Likely to win the election (or get in office some other way), why I think Biden is likely to lose (or get forced out of office), and why I'm terrified as hell.

I am genuinely concerned about the direction of the United States, and how it will affect the rest of the world too. For all of our lives, America was about freedom and democracy. It may not have been perfect, but we at least had tons of freedom that other countries did not have. We have the freedom to be friends with whoever we like, to enjoy whichever entertainment we'd like, for which news we could get, to criticize our own government, and to use whichever websites we want to (including this one). I also believe in peace, and that people can get along no matter what race, ethnicity, nationality, or their sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, etc, and I believe in going forwards. Unfortunately it looks like we are heavily going backwards, especially with Donald Trump (who has been charged SEVERAL TIMES, and is on trial) as a presumptive nominee. I think we all need to learn that we shouldn't take democracy for granted, but now we live in a time where we are so dangerously close to fascism, where everyone (especially marginalized groups) will face oppression. as Trump is trying to be a dictator (With even more authoritarian rhetoric than ever before. He even said he wanted to be a dictator "only on day one", but history tells us that they last far longer than just a day.) and unfortunately I think he's going to succeed, especially after SCOTUS gives him full immunity and renders him above the law. The worst part about all this is that so many Americans are sleepwalking into it, and some even embracing it. I am heavily believing now that no matter who legitimately wins the election, Trump is going to be in office, and our freedoms will go away (being EXACTLY what the Founders, the real ones and not the MAGA versions, didn't want.). Back in the late 2010s, it would have been considered a partisan hyperbolic statement by Democrats , but after 01/06/21, and the further radicalization of the GOP (to the point it's mostly just the Trump party), his increasingly authoritarian and violent rhetoric (that sounds an awful lot like Hitler) plus the extreme polarization, its safe to say that it's possible that our democracy won't survive the 2024 election, and here's why a dictatorship is very likely (or inevitable).
  1. Apathetic Voters and Protest votes. If you look at almost all of the polls, Biden and Trump are either tied, or Trump is in the lead by a small margin. In case you haven't noticed, Biden doesn't really have much of a loyal fanbase, meanwhile, Trump has a literal cult who will follow him NO MATTER WHAT. Biden's approval rating has sunken over the years, partially due to inflation (Even though things have been getting better recently), and of course the support of Israel (even though the situation is very complex and not only that, there's also Trump probably being even worse when its this, as he will absolutely NOT sympathize with the Palestinians.), he signed the bill that will likely Ban TikTok (Even though Trump called for that first, then flip flopped, even though he doesn't care about tiktok) and there is yet another issue than can never be fixed, HIS AGE (though Trump really isn't much younger.) As a result, he has lost the young vote, and many people would either vote for a 3rd party candidate or for Trump as a protest vote, or vote for Trump due his time in office being more "peaceful" and having better "economy" (Even though Trump sides with PUTIN in invading Ukraine, and the fact that the covid recession started under Trump, and lets not forget the George Floyd protests and Trump trying to stop even the PEACEFUL ones, he even threatened to use the MILITARY to do it.) Either that, or they'd refuse to vote for anyone thinking that all the options suck or that Trump will for sure lose so them voting is unnecessary. But, that's one of the reasons why Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election and Trump won (only by the electoral vote), and why we are all in this mess in the first place.
  2. Voter suppression: Even if there were a lot of people who would actually want Biden to win, Ever since the 2020 election, republican lawmakers across states have passed several voter suppression laws to make it harder for those who are most likely to vote against Trump or other republican candidates. More people would also be disenfranchised. Even worse than that, is that some of it could even be done by force, such as Maga people guarding the polls, and even Poll workers not working fairly either.
  3. Overturning an election could happen. Even if Biden won the election legitimately, there is still a chance that the election could be overturned, and not only that, there's a HIGHER CHANCE of it being successful than in 2020 (Especially considering that most of the congress REPUBLICANS that put country over party are GONE now). In fact people are already planning the election denial just in case Biden wins, which will ensure that it will be more likely to be a success, so it's very likely that even if Biden legitimately wins, Trump will be in office.
  4. January 6 could happen again. Even if the election doesn't get overturned, there is another way Trump could get in office, BY FORCE! When January 6 happened, it was very violent and scary, but it didn't prevent Biden from getting in office. However, things are likely to be different in 2025, and as such January 6 may be more likely to be successful than last time. They may use some tactics that are UNTHINKABLE, and of course, Trump could power grab and be in office, and thus become a dictator.

Now I know a lot of people would say that "dude relax, we survived a Trump term before, and we will survive the next one, it won't be as bad." Yeah, people said it "won't be that bad" in 2016, but even with the guardrails, checks and balances, and Trump's inexperience, that term resulted in several preventable covid deaths, a supermajority far right supreme court that overturned several things including abortion (which Trump TAKES CREDIT FOR) and of course, the January 6 attack (which he still PRAISES and will pardon all the attackers when in office). Those guardrails won't even exist anymore next time, as now Trump will pick only loyalists in his cabinet (and purge the “deep state” aka people who won’t go along with Trump), many of the moderate Republicans are leaving or are radicalizing (most of the ones that stood up to Trump are NO LONGER IN CONGRESS, and even HALEY has seemingly flip flopped as well.), and now Trump knows well what he's doing (and knows more about how the government works and how to exploit it), and let's not forget about Project 2025 (And Republicans are ALREADY implementing some of it). People also said similar things about Hitler back in the 1930s as well, such as saying that it was "hyperbolic", laughing at him, or even saying that he "wouldn't be that bad", but we all know how that ended up. Yet ANOTHER world war and genocide towards targeted groups (such as Jews, the disabled, and LGBT). The same thing happened with other dictators as well.

One of the worst things about this is that many people are sleepwalking into it, or don't even care. The mass media isn't covering enough of this, but instead "Biden is old" or stuff like that, which isn't helping one bit (especially when owned by billionaires), and what's even worse is that many of these people won't even realize the danger that's coming until it's way too late (as has happened NUMEROUS times throughout history, including in Germany). Even worse than that is that many people (Especially MAGA) are saying they'd prefer a dictatorship (though maybe not outright, though the fact that they support Putin is telling), and are saying that it's what America needs, and they (wrongly) believe that they will benefit from it. Not only that, a survey has revealed that Gen Z is actually leaning towards dictatorship as well. and not only that, Corporate America is starting to embrace the upcoming dictatorship. They believe they will benefit from it (they won't), being one of the reasons why the mass media won't report this enough. And not only that, it seems like NOTHING can stop him, not even his convictions (instead of opening the eyes of Maga, they will see him as being persecuted, meaning there is absolutely NOTHING that could open their eyes, they will never see him as someone who ONLY cares about himself, but as a savior, and i'm frightened by that.).

All of this will result in Trump winning the election (Which will be even more likely once he gets full immunity), and of course our democracy falling apart, the only belief system allowed being (their version of) Christianity, us losing our rights and freedoms, our education system being MAGA propaganda, Ukraine being taken over by Putin, and a possible Civil War II (or even worse, WWIII, and a possible nuclear apocalypse). Even worse than that, Putin could take over the US and betray Trump as well (and we will be totally fucked), but if not then Trump may try to take over the world. History tells is that usually the only way to get rid of a dictator is by violence (either a war or a coup), and we don't want to get to that point, but unfortunately, it looks like its inevitable, especially with the decaying of the guardrails and increased polariziation. Soon we may have to say goodbye to our rights and freedoms, and we will accept that we may lose some of our friends along the way, we may no longer be able to do whatever activities we enjoyed doing, we may no longer even be able to criticize the government anymore (even if its constructive criticism) as well as living in fear for a very long time. They also say that a loss of hope for our democracy could contribute to it, and admittedly, it's very hard to feel hopeful right now considering all of the factors, but there is still a little bit of hope. We can prepare for this, and make it so this is less likely,
  1. Everyone should vote: Everyone who is allowed to vote should vote. The two party system sucks, and I'm not the biggest Biden fan, but I'm voting for him anyway, because he's the lesser of the two evils, especially when the only other major choice is trying to overthrow the government. I think a vote for a 3rd party candidate or someone else who isn't on the ballot is a vote for trump (Especially since we have a TWO PARTY SYSTEM, other parties are UNLIKELY TO WIN), please let's not repeat 2016.
  2. Fight Voter suppression by supporting some non profit pro democracy groups, especially non partisan ones.
  3. Fighting against the overturning, again by supporting the same organizations.
  4. The people at the Capitol should be prepared for what will happen the next attack, and let’s NOT normalize such attacks.

However, there is still only a slim chance that saving democracy by these methods will happen, but the best we can do right now is enjoy the time we have right now. We should enjoy the time we can enjoy the media we want, go to the places we want, be friends with who we want, and spend time with our family members (Especially if they are in the LGBT community or other marginalized communities, because the time we have with them may be numbered), and of course live our lives to the fullest, by doing the things that we take for granted (As long as it doesn't hurt anyone). And soon, it's very likely to go away, and it's a very hard lesson, that in order to keep freedom or even improve it, we have to work hard to protect it, because it CAN happen here. If all the preparation that us and some government officials can do fails, then what should we do. Accept what will happen to us or flee to another country and live in exile, don't say that you weren't warned. We don't want this to happen, we want to live in a country without always living in fear. So please try to help us. Especially if you actually care about your rights and freedom, or that of your friends and family (especially those who are in marginalized groups). This election isn’t just Biden vs. Trump, it’s Democracy vs Dictatorship, and I think it would be hyperbolic if it weren’t for Trump’s Hitler like speeches, his praise of autocrats, the January 6 attacks in 2021, and Project 2025.

2024.06.02 19:34 LivytheHistorian A bright spot of confidence in a formerly “failing” student

Just wanted to share a hard won victory for my son today and thought you all might appreciate it!
My son was enrolled in a hybrid school for several years. Unfortunately our son struggled and was “behind” his peers in second grade despite doing well on at home days. We reached out to his physician to get him tested. The school started recommending holding our son back. Meanwhile our son had received an ADHD diagnosis and was rapidly catching up due to the medication and behavioral therapy. He went from not reading at all to confidently sounding out words almost overnight. The school was adamant however that he would not be moving onto 3rd grade. He also confessed to us and his therapist that his 1st grade teacher made him sit in a corner most of the day and that now his second grade teacher was calling him stupid in class. He told his doctor he was too stupid to learn and began refusing his medication because kids made fun of him for his brain being different. Obviously we had to make a change.
We pulled him out not long after Christmas his second grade year. We bought fresh workbooks and readers and computer games, etc. True homeschooling without the support of the hybrid school was scary. But it gave us freedom to try new curriculum better suited for his brain. He had the freedom to move from one subject to another when he’s bored or run off energy outside or learn from a YouTube video or podcast. We just focused on building base skills and building up his confidence but the damage was deep and he frequently would get frustrated and say he was just too dumb.
Now it’s more than a year later and reading finally “clicked.” He’s read about twenty chapter books this year and he’s doing fourth grade math and he loves science and geography and is even learning Spanish. And today he pulled up a new educational computer game where he got to pick his aptitude level. In the past he’s always gone for the easiest levels in every subject but today he told me he wanted to start at level two in most and level 3 in math and reading because “I’m really good at those things now.”
Frankly I could care less if he’s ahead, behind, or on par with grade level right now. But knowing he has confidence in himself? That’s the ultimate prize of parenthood. Im so proud of the wonderful human we have the privilege of raising and I’m so proud of everything he’s accomplished this past year.

2024.06.02 19:31 BRiEgN cgpa vs lsat

hey everyone!
so i had a rough first year and have since been brining my grades up and began getting help. by the end of my undergrad (expected april 2026) i should have around a 3.4 cgpa. i havent taken the lsat yet and im wondering if its worth it to study for the lsat while in 3rd and 4th year, conffer my degree in april 2026 and then go back for 2 semesters to attempt to get my cgpa up to a 3.5? will schools (im applying to all in canada besides sask, manitoba, unb prob) even look at undergrad courses done after my degree is conffered. i am really intrested in OZ if anyone has the direct answer for that? also the reason why i want to confer my degree no matter what is incase anything happens i still have my bachelors already and can hopefully move home and just take bird courses in the meantime.
or if i should just focus on my grades now, graduate in april 2026 with a 3.4 and then spend the may-september studying for the lsat to apply for the 2027 cycle.
i guess my main question here is; is it really worth it to go back for 2 semesters to raise my cgpa from a 3.4 to a 3.5 (and will schools even count this) or should i just focus on spending those months studying on the lsat.
thanks so much guys :)

2024.06.02 18:43 ALDO113A Beyond the Spider-Verse introductions, thematic wrap-ups, and foreshadowing - an ATSV anniversary theory

Shortform

Premise

Here is the textual taxonomy of trilogys as I've heard in (obscure, hard-to-find) writing structure lessons
Across may not have been a conclusive Act 2, but it is definitely a valid standalone one
"I'ma do my own thing."
"We're supposed to be the good guys."
Miles summarized his new path throughout the movie, then Gwen called out the Society for their enabling of so much death and suffering to serve a misguided dogma.
https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/File:Spider-Man_Across_the_Spider-Verse_poster_003_textless.jpg
There's almost certainly gonna an all-out ideological civil war (fists or not, composite of MCU and comics, but Spiders-only) like that split poster teased.
Gonna be grimly hilarious seeing Spinneret/Spiderling fight Peter B. and Mayday (the former are on Miguel's side to the left, along with Insomniac Spidey)
Yes, I believe there will be a few more new support characters in Beyond - there's a reason certain folks were at the front, and it's just really curious and a wasted opportunity that this Spider-MJ didn't interact at all with this active version of her other (stillborn) daughter or her (Mayday-616B) dad.
I very much appreciate the lifting of other Spidey variants to the zeitgeist fold - Noir, Ham, Gwendy-65, the UK/Punk and Indian ones, the weirdos like Parkedcar from Not! Pixar's Cars, a damn popsicle possibly (lol), a plushie, etc. - but they

Events and Themes

1. Universes

Serving the Installment 3 role, Beyond will probably tie up loose ends and make the above themes reverberate across universes. Like, for 42:
Beyond the 'verse of men of spiders, Reality-42 rises up against villainy.

2. Characters and Developments

By "reverberate," the Spider-Hero question is going to strike real nerves that change the Society and the world, making them examine the morality of the war they fight against anomalies like Spot; survival at all means and costs vs. idealistic stand against fate. And for certain Spiders, we could get more screentime with certain Society members and ex-members - preferably Spinneret and Spiderling, the Insomniac Spideys, and Scarlet Spider - and Endgame-ify Beyond's length.
Feel free to add more :) Not quite a Marvel binger yet, XD

3. Fates

Another element to be addressed is the room elephant of canon events. Their loopholes, their flexibility have to be expanded upon: They are fluid like time's arrows and oceans. For one:
Maybe we even trade one event for another, as in a major death of sorts. In my opinion:
Here's a unique twist: The mastermind behind this Spider- conspiracy grows a conscience after all the breaking lectures against his warped view of canon events, then resolves to save as many lives as possible, dropping all pretenses of controlling the Spider-War
At risk to himself, he'll unhesitatingly save lives while one/some of those who blindly followed him give theirs. As shitty as his Society's turned out to be, they still have their main directive of fixing multiversal incursions, and someone has to keep giving the orders, someone with the most drive and commitment (especially for atonement)
Why on Miguel? Matured thinking aside, it evokes how science and philosophy works; cognitive science has this cliché of at least two sides theorizing extremes that are contrary to one another, and as time passes with discovery, the proof points to both sides having a point and deciding on a compromise; this of course goes beyond simple personal disagreement
So who'll it be?
Spider-gents and ladies, none other than Gwendolyn Maxine Stacy of Earth-65B
In the vein of MCU Aunt May being her Pete's Uncle Ben delivering that responsibility quote, and through it occurs the Spider-Verse's true Ultimate Fallout/Death of a Spider event this way
Gwen being slain and (certainly) coming back would be a wakeup call to both her world and the Society, as well as the latter group's morality in their internal strife and conflict against Spot. Redeem her image to everybody, Miles included, while allowing them to get together on solitary terms
That way:
It'd also be a roundabout redemption for blindly following the Society's beliefs and causing unnecessary pain to Miles, deeper than "My well-meaning side right, your well-meaning side wrong" - no, both sides can have their two cakes; say, the rest save Jeff, Gwen herself - the motherless one - saves Rio, let 1610B not be 1610A in this particular way
I'ma spitball here, but it's kinda like Nolanverse (TDKR) Batman, come to think of it. Maybe George is informed of and reveals his daughter's "demise" and publicizes her ident? The latter I admit is questionable
Maybe Gwen goes to 1610B and RVs with Miles to Florence - there's this café on the banks of the Arno - for a fine evening sitting there and ordering a Fernet Branca
XD

(Potential) Foreshadowing

... "We wanted to craft this moment where Miles encounters this powerful figure in his life that he loved so much and he lost," says director Justin K. Thompson. "That's when he realizes that he is not really in his own dimension, as well as the gravity of what he has lost. In this reality, Aaron had to shake off his life of crime and became a surrogate father figure to Miles."
... In this alternate reality, the Sinister Six have been able to flourish and take over the world. "Criminality runs rampant," says Thompson. "We wanted to create a world where it felt like Aaron and Miles G. Morales of Earth-42 [this reality's counterpart to Miles Morales] are the only heroes.

Interviewer: Will we see other multiversal variants of Gwen Stacy in the future even if they don't have spider powers, like you do with MJ, Uncle Aaron, and Miles?
Lord: Currently yes. ... But there’s one I’m very excited about.
Miller: Yes, yeah, I know exactly the one you’re talking about.
Lord: You know the one I’m thinking of, which is based on... I’m not gonna say anything, I’m not gonna say anything.
Miller: But it is sort of plot-integral, I would say.
Interviewer: If there are other multiversal variants of Gwen in Beyond the Spider-Verse, will they impact her arc, her relationship with Miles?
Lord: I would say yes.
The Pete variants showed up after Blondie's demise, so they might reverse the sequence here - as I said, a bookend.
Yea, all these signs totally bode well for the other blonde Spidey here

In Defense

Now calm down before you web pitchforks on me
Rachel Cole: You know what gives me the strength? My loss. We're alike that way, I imagine. Admit it, nobody who's a stranger to that particular pain could ever be as driven as us.
Daredevil: Never... Don't you ever say that to me ever again, that is a repellent statement, it's a vomituous insult to every cop, every fireman, every soldier alive who steps up to fight for those who can't! I am sorry for your loss, but if you genuinely believe that only the death of a loved one can motivate a human being to take up a cause...then get your pathetic cynical ass out of my way so I can do my job!
It's relevant because Rachel's stance here was that people like them who fight for causes are solely inspired by loss, only for Matt to verbally skewer her. The subtext here, synthesizing it with the Spidey mythos is that it's misguided to think that losing forever more loved ones is the only way to make a true Spider-Hero.
Flip the narrative and say "Villainy only happens if they're abused/poorly raised, alas, poor villain;" one is warranted to call it a vomitous insult to every abuse victim/improperly raised junior out there who became better than their elders/superiors - i.e. not go evil.
Either way, the greater gist of this is losing a close one for good isn't the way, emphasis on "for good"

Future Implications

Wrapping everything up like above (I mean the objectives), one way or another (not necessarily mine), would show full commitment to the theme of forging one's own destiny right down to the metatextual. The Spidersoc let confirmation bias blind themselves to possibilities and seemingly have yet to expose themselves to the preestablished branch realities where, say, Spider-People lose nobody or a Gwen Stacy ties neatly her romance quest with a Spidey. The themes of doing your own thing openly and honestly and in safety - rather than requesting permission from broken systems - resonate much with an Excel list: People who are queeof colowomen/disabled
Beyond that obviousness, we have disabled Spideys, Muslim Spideys (that female UK one), Blob-fat Spideys - even PLUSHIE Spideys, just to name a few, all to show the movie being the most diverse and inclusive Spidey work to date. These themes are so incredibly applicable to the lives of atypical people or otherwise people who live under systems that aren't designed for them to succeed. IE: POC, women, queer people, people with disabilities, etc. One can argue "doing your own thing" was what made ItSV such a breakthrough success and a decade phenomenon: Everything about the animation
I get that a teen girl dying, even temporarily - especially one who resonates much with LGBT (transgwender specifically) themes - is real bad optics, but we went through this before with Luz Noceda (bi rep exactly) from The Owl House, and things landed on their feet :)
If/When she comes back to crimefighting, this would be the moment she goes by Ghost Spider like her A self - a Gwen who fought fate and died for it, but another Spider loved her so much, he raised her from death to life in Ultimate defiance (getting flowery prose here) that prevails

2024.06.02 18:24 TyMcDuffey Leadership Wisdom from King Sejong the Great of Korea

Leadership Wisdom from King Sejong the Great of Korea
Sejong ruled from 1418 to 1450. He is one of Korea’s most respected and admired rulers, celebrated for his deep concern for his people’s welfare and his promotion of scientific and cultural advancements.
King Sejong is best known for the creation of Hangul, the Korean alphabet, which was introduced in 1443. Hangul was revolutionary because it was designed to be easy to learn, increasing literacy and diminishing the gap between the elite and the common people. Sejong recognized that the Chinese characters then used in Korea were difficult for commoners to master, limiting literacy to the elite.
To address this, he assembled a royal research institute known as the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon). The group of scholars selected to work on the creation of Hangul was composed of the kingdom’s most distinguished linguists, philosophers, and scholars.
Sejong and his scholars studied the sounds of the Korean language and aimed to create a system that could accurately represent these sounds with simple, easy-to-learn characters. They designed Hangul to be phonetic, with each character representing a specific sound, making it intuitive and accessible. The shapes of the consonants were based on the shape of the mouth and tongue when pronouncing the corresponding sounds, while the vowels were inspired by philosophical principles of the universe, reflecting elements of the sky, earth, and human beings.
Specifically, the design of the vowels incorporated three fundamental symbols: a horizontal line representing the earth, a point or a short line representing the sky, and a vertical line representing humans. These symbols were combined to form the vowel characters, grounding the writing system in a cosmological framework emphasizing harmony and balance.
Sejong’s dedication to this project was driven by his desire to improve communication and education among his people. By providing a tool that everyone could learn, he democratized literacy and promoted broader participation in government and society.
Hangul’s introduction was met with resistance from some elites, particularly the scholarly class known as the yangban, who saw it as a threat to their status and the established social order. They believed that the traditional use of Classical Chinese script maintained their elite position and intellectual superiority. Despite their resistance, the common people quickly embraced the simplicity and effectiveness of the new script, as it allowed them to learn to read and write more easily.

Leadership Traits and Actions

Sejong’s introduction of Hangul showed his innovative approach to solving societal problems. Prior to Hangul, Koreans used Classical Chinese in writing, which was difficult for the common person to master.
Sejong established the Hall of Worthies, where scholars developed advancements in agriculture, metallurgy, printing technology, and astronomy. Notable inventions from this institute included the water clock, which improved timekeeping accuracy; the rain gauge, which was a significant development in agricultural planning; and celestial globes, which improved astronomical observations. These advancements showed Sejong’s commitment to scientific progress and practical solutions for his kingdom. They also solidified his legacy as a forward-thinking ruler.
Sejong’s policies were deeply oriented toward improving the living conditions of his subjects. He promoted the development and use of new farming techniques and tools, such as improved plows and irrigation systems, which increased crop yields. He encouraged the cultivation of drought-resistant crops such as millet and barley to mitigate the impact of adverse weather conditions.
To further support the common people, Sejong devised laws that lessened the burden of taxation on farmers and lower-class citizens. He introduced a tax system known as the “Daejeon,” which adjusted tax rates based on the fertility and productivity of the land.
This system categorized land into different grades according to its agricultural output potential, with more fertile lands being taxed at a higher rate and less fertile lands at a lower rate. The idea was to make sure that farmers with less productive land were not disproportionately burdened by taxes.
Sejong’s reforms also included measures to assess the farmers’ ability to pay taxes, taking into account crop failures and natural disasters. This responsive and flexible approach to taxation involved regular assessments and adjustments based on the current conditions of the farming community.
Local officials were tasked with evaluating the impact of adverse conditions on crop yields and reporting back to the central government. If a region experienced a poor harvest or was struck by a natural disaster, tax relief measures could be implemented. This might include reducing the tax rate, deferring tax payments, or, in extreme cases, exempting the affected farmers from taxes for that year.
These measures allowed farmers to retain more of their harvest for personal use and reinvestment into their farms rather than being driven into debt or destitution by inflexible tax demands. By alleviating the tax burden during difficult times, Sejong’s policies facilitated a more profitable and stable society, where economic growth was more evenly distributed and social unrest was minimized.

Life and Challenges

Sejong’s creation of Hangul teaches the importance of accessible education and the empowerment that comes from communicating effectively. This is a great consideration for any leader who wants to promote inclusivity and understanding.
Sejong’s ability to introduce new innovations while managing the pushback from traditionalist forces in the court demonstrates the challenge of balancing progress with tradition. This is a relevant lesson for modern change-makers. Consider the importance of strategic thinking, perseverance, and the ability to handle resistance when implementing new ideas.
Sejong’s empathetic approach to leadership, focused on the tangible needs of his people, emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing the challenges faced by those one leads.

Applying Sejong’s Lessons

Incorporate King Sejong’s principles by encouraging clear communication and promoting educational initiatives in your community or organization. Think about how you can use technology and innovation to solve problems while also taking into account the needs and reservations of all stakeholders involved. Reflect on how you can apply Sejong’s empathetic and innovative leadership style to encourage inclusivity and improve conditions in your sphere of influence.

2024.06.02 17:56 Louie_Cousy-onXBOX Why am I such a flakey person? How do I stop?

I’ll agree to plans because they seem fun and I want to do it, then the day of I’ll just tell them something else came up; I’m running out of dead uncle funerals for excuses. I’ve sealed the deal on going to multiple girls house’s for sex 5 times in the last month and just didn’t follow through on the day I said I would go over. In football terms I’ve been on the 1 yard line 5 times and haven’t scored yet- I haven’t even kicked a single field goal; I didn’t even turn the ball over either, I just punted into the back of the endzone. Dude I missed my best friend’s wedding last month. His wife is also a friend of mine and we’ve all known eachother since the 3rd grade too, so it wasn’t like I was scared of being an unknown attendee.
Am I just a genuine sociopathic-antisocial POS that should just dig a hole in the side of a cliff and live there?

"I'ma do my own thing."
"We're supposed to be the good guys."

- but they

Shortform

2024.06.02 16:59 Evening_Rip5794 My friend is weird. (1)

here are some things you should know first.
  1. I think she might have adhd or autism, though it's never been confirmed.
  2. she's very sheltered
  3. her parents are weird
  4. She is lonely
  5. I'm her only friend.
this is going to be long btw.
So, our friendship formed when we were in year 4 (3rd grade) and she has't left me alone after that. All it took was one small act of kindness -- and boom. She's obsessed. I've only started to talk about her to my family recently because now I understand that her actions are wrong. But everyone I've told has all downplayed me or ignored me because it apparently 'sounds like the plot of Baby Reindeer'.
For YEARS in our primary/elementary school, no one liked her. Even when we were in Secondary School. And it's mostly because of her lack of personal space, reading a room, touching people weirdly (including me), guilt-tripping, manipulation, gaslighting, hurting people mentally and hurting people physically. There's a lot of stuff to go through.
I hit puberty early - i was about 8-9 and later got my period at 10. Amy always used to go though my bag and would get mad if i told her to stop. A lot of the time she'd take stuff out of my bag, open stuff that wasn't her's or if she'd see stuff like tampons, pads, bras, she'd call me a slut, as a joke, despite us only being 10-11. She also used to hide my bag or thro it against walls and stuff inside would often break. I am and always have been horrible at telling people no, which is why she does all this weird stuff - cuz i can't say stop.
One day, I was at her house and was on my period. i asked to use her bathroom and at first she wouldn't let me but after a while she eventually agreed and let me. Because i was on my period - keep in mind i had heavy ones - it smelt weird after: kinda like metal, she told me. And then skip forward about a year, i was sat at a table with some of my friends: Amy, Cathy, Dora and James. For no reason, Amy brings up how I made her bathroom smell weird and that I left blood everywhere. Luckily, Cathy, Dora and James said that they didn't care and it was weird of her to bring that up. She acted sad the rest of the day and kept stabbing me in the thigh with a sharp pencil.
I have to stop writing but I'm not finished. I'll be writing the other part later but idk what to say.
sorry if any of this offends u.

2024.06.02 16:32 SparkyJet SparkyJet Reviews MLPFIM: Day 2 - (The Ticket Master and Applebuck Season)

S1E3: The Ticket Master! Slice of life episode that centers on the first rift between the new group of friends. Twilight Sparkle has an extra ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala and each of the Mane Six wants to attend. Applejack wishes to drum up business for the farm. Rainbow Dash wants to meet her Wonderbolt heroes. Rarity yearns to find her true love. Fluttershy craves to view the private garden full of fauna and flora. Pinkie Pie hopes to attend as it’s the biggest party in Equestria. All the discord and bickering stresses Twilight out and she can’t determine which friend to take with her.
Rewatchability: 2/10 rank. You can absorb everything in this episode upon the first playthrough There’s no stand out moments that cause a reason to rewatch it past the initial viewing. Also, Rarity’s demeanor irks me in this one. She acts like a total snob to Twilight and it’s a total contrarian to her earlier behavior the past two episodes. Really didn’t like that! Also, it’s odd Twilight asks Spike if he’s been to the gala. Twilight hatched Spike. She should literally know.
Humor: 3/10 rank. There’s not many moments. I did enjoy the Yakety Sax parody when the denizens of Ponyville chase Twilight and Spike and clamor for the extra ticket. That was refreshing. Also, the repeated disgust Spike makes about the Gala. Calling it “girly gala gunk” and “frilly frou-frou nonsense”. Though, the ending when he parades giddily from receiving a ticket to the event was humorous too. Oh, and who could forget “And then I said oatmeal? Are you crazy?” Classic quote of this tremendous show.
Songs: 2/10 rank. Like the previous episode, there’s not many. Only two are included and both were random whimsical ditties from Pinkie Pie. Her “Fantasy Song” when she imagines herself at the Gala is quirky and cute. The effervescent party pony does make some adorable expressions during the song. Both are short quick melodies that fill the time to this episode. Not much to say.
Plotline Enjoyment: 4/10 rank. Granted, it was nice to see an episode that showed disharmony in the Mane Six. This episode did a great job of showcasing their first rift. An extra ticket to an event that all wanted to attend is a very believable real world allegory that friends could quarrel over. However, it was surprising to see the length of the contretemps. Rainbow Dash and Applejack clashed. Rarity acted spoiled and stuck up. Plus, the other five ponies tried earning brownie points to Twilight by doing favors. The friendship lesson Twilight learned at the end about blessings was sweet though.
Would I recommend this episode: No.
Overall: 3/10 rank. A grade of D+ It’s not a terrible episode, per se, but it leaves a lot to be desired and is slightly fillerish. I’d have preferred if there was an immediate follow up episode, similar to the previous two-parter. Twilight should’ve admonished her friends’ behavior a bit. I would’ve liked to see who she ultimately chose to go with her in the end. The Ticket Master does an okay job with its presentation, but the conclusion did feel a tad rushed.
Question: Which pony had the best reason to attend the gala and deserved the extra ticket?
In conclusion, The Ticket Master is an early episode in the series that doesn’t really warrant a viewing. This episode isn’t bad, but falls below an average rank in my opinion. It has some nice moments like the Yakety Sax parody and Spike’s behavior, but those aren’t enough to save it, cementing this episode as one of the bottom of the barrel in my season one rankings. Three episodes down, and two-hundred and eighteen to go.

2024.06.02 16:29 Liquid_Pot I did something bad In 3rd grade and I think it scarred a lot of people

When I was in 3rd grade, I mixed up this batch of fake V and went to the cinema. I stood up over the edge of the balcony in the cinema and started dumping it and making gross noises. Then the people down below watching the movie that got the fake V on them started to TU for real. It caused a chain reaction and everyone in the room started to TU. I just wanted to share this somewhere where I may feel that I’ve confessed, because nobody knows it was me and I still feel guilty about it 20 years later.

2024.06.02 16:25 POOTERSS In for 22500 out for 28875(Golden Gate, Las Vegas NV)

In for 22500 out for 28875(Golden Gate, Las Vegas NV)
Played for about 2 hours on June 2 2024 from 4am-6am during the dead of night.
Table was initially empty when I first walked up. They only had half the table open. Bought in for 10200 initially and had to fill out W2 forms since it was my 2nd time there only.
Bet 70 on don't pass and maxed the odds on a point 9. Meaning I had 1050 odds laid against it. I immediately sevened out with a nasty 5-2 and said "let's go!!" Roll sequence was like 9, 3, 6, 7.
Bought in for 2500 more several more times to end up with a 22.5k buyin. I'm still rolling from the don't pass and table stays cold. I seven out 2 or 3 times in a row and it's amazing. Up about 2500 within 15 min.
After that 2 players join in. I bet the don't pass 70 and max odds on this young guy to my left who's rolling with 10 minimum on the pass and no odds. He establishes a point of 9. I lay max odds 1050.
After many rolls, at least 7 or 8, he hits the 9 5-4 and whacks me for 1100. This other guy to my right is placing all the numbers across for about 50 each, so 300 across initially.
I switch to the pass line, 70 pass and max odds. 4 is the point. Also start betting Come bets 70. Guy hits more numbers and eventually makes the 4. Nicee. Place better to my right is up to 1000 across.
Roller is on his 3rd point number but hasn't made much since he was only on pass and no odds. He gets up to about 25-30 rolls and is on a heater. Place better keeps hitting numbers, I hit a couple come bets too. Really great roll. Eventually the place better to my right gets up to 4500 across with 1500 on the 4. He started with about 1500 total it was funny. I hedge my 3 come bets with 200 big red. Roller who hasn't made much on a 25-30 roll decides to put it all on the field.
He rolls, it's a 5-2 7 OUCH. I lose about 2000 but had it hedged.
After that I bet don't pass one more time, nothing else. Guy tried to repeat the hot roll and it nope'd the table. 6-1 seven within 5 rolls.
I leave after that. Great performance. Ended up about 6000, I try not to get greedy these days.
Took a photo of my rack at the end when I colored
what I bought in for initially, 10200
Colored, the aftermath
Walking in at 422AM, so nervous

2024.06.02 16:13 ThrowRA_pickpick AITA for not bringing a gift at a birthday party

I 19F is friends with Kylie 20F, she and I have known each other since 3rd grade and our friendship is great... There's Jasmine 25f her birthday was yesterday the 1st and we didn't have any celebration because we all had Saturday class we all agreed to hang out on Sunday which was today.. Jasmine and I Aren't very close she's a friend of a friend we barely ever interact Now here's where the story actually begins I turned 19 in January and I had a small get together part everyone got me presents all besides Jasmin which is totally fine because she and I aren't close enough to be gifting each other... Well at least that's what I thought Today during her party of which happened at MY place and the drinks from MY FRIDGE, Jasmin lashed out at me screaming saying I didn't give her anything and I got stink eyes from everyone in the room which made me rather uncomfortable I apologised for peace sake and she scoffed calling me names of all sorts. I then became annoyed and lashed I screamed at her and told her how dare she scream at me for not getting her anything I'm literally just a broke 19 Yr old college student trying to make ends meet while. She on the other hand has a stable job and I didn't see the reason for her to be so upset about.
Now don't worry about My bsf Kylie she was behind me this whole time as she knows how tight my money situation is and she tried to calm Jasmin but she wasn't having it I kicked everyone out and later on got text messages from everyone calling me an asshole for not getting Jasmin a gift They seem to forget that all the drinks they had was from me and the location of the party was mine So am I the asshole?

2024.06.02 16:07 brod333 Responding to Exion’s response pt 2

Exion has a second response to my posts rebutting him. I’ll address that now. My my previous posts see https://www.reddit.com/Quraniyoon/s/uNMhn0XUpS. For his post I’m responding to see https://www.reddit.com/Quraniyoon/s/uUdbqbc7qs.
Once again Exion doesn’t link my post that he is responding to within his post. He should so everyone can see my full post that he’s responding to, not just the parts he quotes.
But it doesn’t. Not even close. The chapter is about a prophet/messenger of God who brought a Holy Covenant.
At I point out in part 4 of my rebuttals while there are parts of the chapter that mention the holy covenant in the context that’s best understood as the covenant with Israel, which Exion acknowledges as a holy covenant. Also no where in the chapter does it indicate any of the individuals mentions are the ones bringing the holy covenant, and it especially doesn’t say the king on verses 3-4 is the one that brings it. Exion has inserted this meaning into the chapter but his analysis of every verse in the chapter doesn’t cover any verse which says this.
I found it here: biblehub - Pulpit's commentary. Literally a direct copy and paste. Not sure how he missed it.
I missed it because Exion didn’t previously cite this source and this source isn’t a translation of the LXX. Rather it’s a commentary which on some occasions includes a translation of a verse in the LXX. It not something that shows up when looking for the original Greek and corresponding English translations. I’m not sure how he expected anyone to find that when he didn’t cite the source. I also still stand by that translation as being wrong. I linked to the original Greek to show it does have the phrase “in Persia”.
Regarding the "The prophecy describes a sequence of events" thing he pointed out, I had already revised each verse from part 1 in part 2, and it now makes perfect sense. He should read part 2.
I did read part 2 and responded to it. It still has 3 problems. First it’s an admission the original was wrong and not just by a minor mistake. If we look at just all the cases where he admits to being wrong there are enough cases that no one should trust him as a reliable source of information. The more of these cases he admits to the more reason everyone has to doubt him. Second as I noted in my original rebuttals the switch involves a case where he changed his claim about the historical facts based on his interpretation of the prophecy showing he is willing to misrepresent the historical facts to fit his interpretation. Third it doesn’t solve the problem of the sequence of events. Daniel 11:3 begins with a vav-relative, which I explain in my previous posts. This indicates temporal succession so if the kings in verse 2 are the first Caliphs the king in verse 3 must be someone who arose to power after those Caliphs. That rules out it being Mohammed who came before those Caliphs. However, his revision still claims verse 3 is about Mohammed so his revision still doesn’t fix his wrong sequence of events.
"This 'rising' could either be in support of Persia or in opposition to it. Remarkably, this aligns perfectly with the historical narrative of Islam, and here's why:..."
The point is to show an inconsistency with his interpretation of that Hebrew phrase with other similar cases in the very same chapter.
Also Exion doesn’t address the verb tense issue I brought up. The verb tense is the active particle. This indicates either a continuing or imminent future action. Islam was about 1200 years after the prophecy which is too long to be considered continuing or imminent future. In my part 4 I note a point where Exion accepts a translation where the temporal succession from the vav-relative is explicit in the English translations showing an inconsistency in Exion’s interpretation.
The Holy Covenant was brought by the mighty king, of course.
Too bad nothing in the verse cited says the king of verse 4 brought the holy covenant mentioned and the context of the verse indicates it’s the convent with the Jews. Again in my part 4 I address this in more detail.
However, he completely missed this point and is portraying the Bible as if it prophesies random historical secular events and secular kings, like a history book, rather than a Holy Book foretelling the era of a prophet and a king, much like King David.
In Daniel 2 there is a prophecy of a statue which from head to toe have 4 different mental. These are explicitly stated to refer to 4 kingdoms that would be in power one after the other before God destroys them all and establishes his kingdom. The first is explicitly stated to be Babylon at the time of king Nebuchadnezzar. In Daniel 5 there is a prophecy where it explicitly states the kingdom of Babylon will be given over to the Medes and Persians. In Daniel 7 there is a parallel prophecy where the 4 kingdoms are represented by 4 beasts. In Daniel 8 there is a prophecy about a Ram and Goat where it explicitly states the Ram is the Medes and Persians while the goat is Greece. Daniel 9 has a prophecy about a period of 490 years starting from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem which occurred during the kingdom of Persia. That’s 5 prophecies about the secular kingdoms of that general time period. Is it that surprising Daniel 11 would also be about the kingdoms of that same time period?
Furthermore Daniel 9 also mentions the abomination of desolation that is mentioned in Daniel 11. This links the prophecies together. It doesn’t make sense to break that link and have Daniel 11 randomly jump to a prophecy about early Islam.
Daniel also isn’t the only prophet to make prophecies about other nations. Check out Isaiah 11-24. Those chapters cover a lot of prophecies about secular nations.
He claims that secular scholars date Daniel to just after these events and believe the book is recording history while pretending to present prophecy. What a silly assertion. Don’t you think people would generally reject such false "prophecy" and declare them deviant liars, especially if they depicted events that had recently happened and everyone knew about? Both you and these secular scholars need to rethink your position because it is very unlikely (almost impossible to be true) and rather ridiculous, if I'm being very frank.
I never said the dating given by the scholars is right. The point was to show that even scholars biased against genuine prophecy recognize this very closely matches the events involving those secular kings. To show I’m not making this up here is The Oxford Bible Commentary, https://imgur.com/a/75vxAEJ.
The chapter is about a prophet who brought a Holy Covenant from God
Again where in the chapter does it say the holy covenant is a future covenant that will be brought about by the king in verses 3-4? It doesn’t say that, Exion is just inserting that interpretation onto the chapter.
Your interpretation that it is saying "as soon as he has risen" adds a temporal nuance that is contextually based rather than explicitly stated in the preposition and verb form. My translation aims for a more direct rendering of "when he stood" or "as he stood," which also respects the grammatical structure without adding interpretative elements not present in the original text.
Two issues here. First “as soon as” and “when” are synonymous. Both indicate that the subsequent fall occurs at the time the king will stand. Second the phrasing here is misleading. It gives the impression that his translation always included a temporal aspect coming from the preposition. However, this is what he originally said ‘The Hebrew doesn’t say “as soon as he has risen,” but only “There stood”‘. His original translation stripped the temporal part from the preposition. He’s changed his translation to add that temporal part. This is another example of where he either explicitly or implicitly acknowledges he was originally wrong. Again just looking at those examples there are enough to show we shouldn’t trust him.
No, it can't, because this is about a Holy Covenant.
Again where does it say that? Sure there are some references to the holy covenant but none state it’s the focus of the chapter or that it’s a new covenant brought by the king in verses 3-4. Rather the references to the holy covenant are about the events that happened between the Jews and those secular kings, like when the temple was invaded, the daily sacrifice stopped, and idol to Zeus set up, and unclean sacrifices made on the alter. Exion acknowledges the covenant with the Jews as a holy covenant in his 3rd part of Daniel 11 but never gives any reason to think the holy covenant in Daniel 11 is not the covenant of the Jews. I on the other hand have given reasons to think it is the covenant of Jews.
Neither Alexander the Great nor anyone else you mention (or anyone related to Alexander) anything to do with a Holy Covenant.
Ya they do like in the events about the temple I just mentioned.
What makes you think that the mighty king came after the 4 kings? The 3rd verse only said:
In the Hebrew it’s the vav-relative indicating temporal succession.
Are you claiming that this must be in chronological order just because the four kings were mentioned before the mighty king? If so, this is the first time I've heard such a claim. Please provide your proof for this supposed Biblical rule; I'd like to read it :). You won't provide any because none exist. But claiming that it does gives you something to "expose," so I understand your motive. However, in the real world, you're just making statements that aren't true.
That’s not my reason. Again it’s because verse 3 starts with a vav-relative indicating temporal succession.
The posterity refers to the Rashidun Caliphs, while "to others besides those" refers to Mu'awiyah and those who followed him. Do you know what "posterity" even means? Posterity literally means future followers or descendants. Lol. The mighty king is the one with the followers, which is why he is the one who brought the Holy Covenant from God, not the four other kings. Had you known what posterity means, you would never have written this in the first place, but we will look past this mistake. Now you know a new word and won't repeat this mistake again. Let's move on.
I know what posterity means. When Alexander the Great died his kingdom was divided into 4 and given to 4 of his generals none of which were his descendants, i.e. they weren’t of his posterity.
Regarding "The king of the south is prophet Muhammad" I had revisited this verse in part 2.
Another case to add to the list where Exion acknowledges he is wrong. Again throwing everything else away and just focusing on those cases it’s evident he is not a reliable source of information.
I don't know if you know this, but stem and branch are synonymous words, they essentially mean the same thing. And lowest part, bottom could also mean stem. Dictionaries define both words similarly:
Exion gives 3 different sources. Let’s examine each more carefully. First he links the strongs source, http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H5342&t=WLC. That link shows the strong meaning as a shoot/branch. Here is the same source for the second word, H8328 - šereš - Strong's Hebrew Lexicon (wlc). It says root/bottom/deep/heel.
Second he mentions the Klein Dictionary. There is an online version here where you can search words, https://www.sefaria.org/Klein_Dictionary,_%D7%A0%D6%B4%D7%A6%D6%B0%D7%A8%D6%B8%D7%94.1. The first word has sprout/shoot, while the second has root/source,origin/bottom,lowest part/root,stem.
Third he mentions Jastrow Dictionary. An online version with word search is here, https://www.sefaria.org/Jastrow,_%D7%A9%D6%B9%D7%81%D7%A8%D6%B6%D7%A9%D7%81.1. The first word has sprout/offshoot and second word has root.
Each of these dictionaries agrees with what I found in the BDB. The first word is referring to the upper exposed part of the tree, i.e. the sprouts/branches, while the second word refers to the bottom of the tree, i.e. the root. He tries to bold a part of the last dictionary to emphasize the second word has an analogous meaning to the first. Let’s look at it carefully.
, v. שָׁרָר) [chain, knot,] root. — Pl. שֳׁרָשִׁים, שֳׁרָשִׁין; constr. שָׁרְשֵׁי, שׁוֹרְשֵׁי. B. Bath. V, 4 העולה … ומן הש׳ וכ׳ that which shoots forth out of the trunk, or out of the roots, belongs to the landowner (v. גֶּזַע), expl. ib. 82ᵃ כל שאינו … זהו מן הש׳ that which does not see the light of day (when it shoots forth) is out of the roots’. Y. Ab. Zar. III, 43ᵃ top; Y. Taan. I, 64ᵇ ש׳ חטה the roots of wheat; ש׳ תאנה of fig-trees. Tosef. Shebi. VII, 17; ‘Uktsin I, 4, v. קוֹלָס. Ab. III, 17 וְשֳׁרָשָׁיו מרובין whose roots are many; a. fr.
Notice what appears immediately before the bolded part, it’s a Hebrew sentence. The bolded part is not the definition. The definition is given at the beginning and just says root. It then gives an example of a Hebrew sentence with that word. The bolded part is a translation of that previous Hebrew sentence not the definition of the word. This is another case of Exion misrepresenting his sources. That bolded part actually supports my point since it shows the root is the part where the rest shoots out of it, i.e. the root is the bottom part.
Either way, let's pretend you're right (even though you're not) it still doesn't matter because a branch out of her roots did sprout, which came to be a sect called Khawarij.
It does matter since he spends effort trying to show this is actual Aisha by name. The fact that it’s not casts doubt on his reliability of translating Hebrew and undercuts an important part of his argument for saying this is about Aisha.
Revised in part 2 already.
Which is one more mistake to add to the list of ones he’s acknowledged. Again just counting the ones he’s acknowledged we can’t trust him as a source of information.
This is just your faulty conclusion and presumption. I speculated that they might have lied about 'Aishah being his wife. However, I'm not satisfied with speculations, so I revised the entire post of part 1, and it turned out to be even more accurate.
It was more than speculation. He went on in the comments to try and defend his claim about Aisha being the daughter of Mohammed and even said “I didn't deny her existence, I denied her role in the life of our prophet, based on Daniel 11. It wouldn't say "daughter" if she wasn't his daughter. I mean, I trust the Books of God more than history books that are based on Sunni Hadiths... the same Hadiths that say that our prophet married a 6 year old child.” https://www.reddit.com/Quraniyoon/s/Ig6OsvEQy8. It’s pretty clear his only basis for his view of the historical facts what what he thought the prophecy said. He only changed his view of the historical facts after his interpretation of the prophecy changed. He’s not establishing historical facts and showing they fit the prophecy, he’s forming an opinion on the prophecy and forcing the historical facts to fit it.
If we can trust the historical sources for the other historical claims he makes then we should be able to trust it for the case of Aisha being Mohammed’s wife. If we can’t trust it for the latter then we shouldn’t trust it for the former. Unless independent reason can be given to trust them for one over the other he’s cherry picking his history to fit the prophecy.
u/TheQuranicMumin I said in my last post ‘you said “If he fails/refuses to do this, we will remove his posts for misinformation.” Can we agree already this counts as a failure to respond and consider his posts misinformation or do I really need to continue addressing his posts/responses?’ After going through his second response I’ll ask this again. Do I need to keep going through these or do you agree his posts are misinformation?
