2024.05.08 04:07 BethA69 It's all over for me!

I already said this as a comment, now I'll say this as a post. My heart is still breaking! Cause now we'll never get to see what the DLC heroes look like! And my ideas won't have a chance to shine either! And now there is no possible chance for a sequel to finish the story! And to also think I could ever imagine that this game could also have an animated movie or TV series with the same design used in the cinematic trailers. I just hate this so much! I really wish this was just a bad dream! Why can't this be saved!? I think I'm starting to cry now! Unless a petition were to start in order to save all of this, I'm going to be leaving everything about Redfall to help me forget the pain.💔😭

2024.05.08 01:13 Uthakker2 Taking my Dutch KNIL to the Welsh Nationals 2024

Taking my Dutch KNIL to the Welsh Nationals 2024
Hello there,
again.
After the WTC earlier this year I yet again found myself with way to many brown points and money saved up. Naturally I had to venture out and blow it on playing a bit more plastic toy soldiers somewhere in Europe. After talking to the ever friendly Pete from the Juggernauts after the WTC and further drawing on the wisdom of one Alistair of Scotland, asking for their recommendations on a proper singles bash on their group of islands they recommended the Welsh Nationals. Held in Ireland. Just kidding.
https://preview.redd.it/9zgc53xd12zc1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8286ccb5797ea24cc47ed1195b7d1e16ad609c7d
So, what are the Welsh Nationals? A lot of the information about the event can be drawn from this here banner of the Facebook event page. It's a Bolt Action (V2) GT held in Cardiff, Wales, at the marvelous Firestorm Games store, organized by Rhys and Josh - who did so expertly.
It was held on the 4th and 5th of May, which were Sat & Sunday respectively. There were going to be 3 rounds at 2,5 hours on the first and 2 more rounds of 2,5 hours on the second day. Good stuff. 52 players had signed on. Even better stuff.
So I booked some flights, packed my things and traveled from DĂźsseldorf over Amsterdam to Bristol, England, to then arrive in beautiful Cardiff on Friday night, just in time before the event. My return was planned for Monday morning, I was ready to go! Bring. It. On.
Army Composition Rules: (in case you somehow missed it)
  • 1250 points
  • up to 2 Generic Reinforced Platoons
  • V2 rules and 2024 FAQ/Errata
  • no theater platoons, no tank platoons, no planes, no named characters, only correctly labeled theater units, the usual stuff.
My Army:
As the title gave away, I ran took my Dutch (KNIL) to their second planned singles outing since the WTC in February. I had still a BUNCH of painting and basing to do, so I used the time to get on finishing my still very bare bone force. I'd preferred playing practice games, but as there is not to much going on in terms of active BA playing around here I only got two games of practice in. Which in fact were the grand total of games I played between the WTC and the Welsh Nationals. I could've used more, a lot more!
https://preview.redd.it/r53ntoix32zc1.jpg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=146e1fc3d8f870822c316403423e456fb5a650d5
So, 1250 points. I've never played at those points. Less so with my Dutch. Should've taken my US or Germans, who can really use the extra points, whereas my Dutch excel at lower point costs due to their absurd cheapness. That being said I used my WTC 1000 point list as a basis and then expanded from there. I cut an inexperienced mule, upgraded a regular mule to vet, dropped an inexperienced horse and truck and from the freed points bought myself two Alvis Straussler armored cars, another light utility vehicle with light anti tank cannon and two regular anti tank rifles. My new list so went from 1000 points and 25 orders to 1249 points and 27 orders while trading 2 useless spam-dice for 5 more combat units. It seemed like a theoretically good idea. As said, sadly I could only practice twice, and only once on the actual mission pack. My army was vast and soft as butter on a summers day. Perfect for taking on the best the GB-meta could sling at me.

My list:
Infantry:
  • 2* inex. 2nd. Lt.
  • 6* 11 inex. shirkers with 6 pistols
  • 2* reg. snipers
  • 2* reg. AT-rifles
  • 2* inex. med. mortars
Artillery:
  • 2* inex. light howitzers
  • 1* reg. howitzer
Vehicles:
  • 1* vet. mule
  • 2* reg. MH CTLS tanks
  • 2* reg. Alvis-Straussler armored cars
  • 4* reg. light utility vehicles with forw. mounted light AT-guns
  • 1* inex. truck
The KNIL at the Welsh Nationals on Alex Bundocks tray he lent me (my travel-tray is too small for the army)
So what does that all tally up to?
I'm running a tank platoon with four fully enclosed 7+ machine-gun vehicles, mounting a total of 10 individual MMGs for some sweet 50 shots of highly mobile firepower. Two of theme even sprinkle in some Recce for good measure.
I'm also running a leaf-blowegunline with 3 howitzers and two mortars which are supplemented by 10 MMGs, 2 snipers, 4 AT guns and 2 AT rifles to deal with pesky gunslingers. I got more. Thee-Hee.
I'm also running a horde of 66 infantry with 36 being tough fighters. sure they shirk, but that don't matter too much in most cases, as they get to retake order test with their full strength and on a charge put out some amazing 11 attacks /6 of which are TF... While costing about half as much as a single Japanese bamboo squad. They clock in at just 38 points in this layout. Unless they're charged in the open they outperform nearly any other unit in the game pointwise! Of course they will lose and die against a plethora of enemies in CC - but you kill 3 Ghurkas while at it - and you've outperformed him point-wise ;) it's amazing!
After so many words, the actual Battle Report:
Round #1: Sectors
With check-in each player was given a number for the duration of the event (mine being 29). Every Table was given a letter (A-Z). The first pairing were like so: 1 vs 2 on A, 3 vs 4 on B and so on. This meant I played against Keith (30) on some letter half way down the alphabet.
The mission was "sectors" and played largely into the strengths of my army. You deploy in a quarter diagonally opposite of your opponent. There was prepatory-bombardment allowed. Which sucks, but on with it. You score 1 VP per kill, 1 per unit in a neutral quarter and 2 per unit in the enemy deployment zone. I have 27 units, its not hard for me to rack in point just by moving them. I deployed along the neutral zones around me and prepared for moving my entire army into scoring secotrs. Keith played late war elite Germans with two Kugelblitzes, but his few order dice meant that he couldn't put any dent in my numbers and thus i smothered all three other sectors with units, largely ignoring his two beefy tanks and gunning down his infantry with amassed vehicles and artillery. Good stuff and a first victory for me with the secondary secured.
the table. This may have been my favorite table of the event (from the ones I played)

Round #2: Heartbreak Ridge
As swiss goes, I now faced another victor from round one. In this case i went up against one Dan Lane of the Juggernauts podcast and his French horde. In Heartbreak Ridge there are three objectives, one in each players quarter and a neutral one smack in the center of the table. This is usually where 95% of the action happens and sadly all to often a draw is produced by two armies grinding to a halt over the center objective.
In our game, fielding somewhat similar armies with similar dice counts (his 25 vs my 27) we had somewhat of a mirror match. Where he brought bigger howitzers, flamers and cavalry I had brought more armor. He pushed units from reserve from his entire board edge. Infantry in the center, closest to the center objective, with his cavalry going around the flanks, likely trying to bait me to move my much slower infantry to intercept and if ignored: tackle my quarters objective. his snipers messed mine up, my mortars messed up his heavy howitzer, my 4 armored vehicles bullied their way up mid-table against a sole howitzer that had taken some hits. he formed a tight circle of small arms around the center objective whilst i tried to push my swarm of swordboies onto said objective. meat-grinder.
I had a truck with a troop on the objective first, which he routed of the table when they failed to rally inside their transport on 3 pins with two attempts. bad luck. but i got 5 more, all running towards the middle. As there is a ruin and we have a massive 52 dice in the bag we have to make good time, which we did all things considered. I pushed another unit onto the objective at the end of turn 4 and he moved an engineers squad into point blank range (flamer missing), a cavalry squad shot to 3 guys, a lone CO and the remnants of an inex. infantry section of his (2 men) into very short range of the objective. however I was holding it in a way he couldn't make contact with it - so he kept shooting the squad on target, who were in hard cover, but still he managed to get them up to three pins. we enter turn 5, i get my dice first. nice. i rally my squad on obj. which would've likely sealed the deal. but of course i fail and go down, with my 3 pins. at least in hard cover. in short succession we draw our last hand full of dice. my two tanks grind through the ruin wiping out all of his units that could've held the objective with their 6 MMgs - but in doing so, killing the engineers right next to my squad before they could activate, they opened the LOF for one of his snipers who of course shot, hit and routed my unit on target. one of my tanks touching the objective made the draw inevitable, and there was not gonna be a 6th turn. 3 more infantry units of mine failing to activate with 1 and 2 pins respectively, even on double tries for one of them the downside of shirker infantry :D... It was a great game, very much exciting to the very end and swinging back and forth.
In hindsight I should've used my tanks to get onto the center early on and bully back his advancing units who had no real anti-tank means making it easier for my infantry to run onto center... hardly playing 2 games in 3 months really takes a toll on your problem solving skills - or rather your redundancy-planning. Anyhow. A great and fast game, sadly a draw, but i got myself that secondary and having bully vehicles is always good times.
Sadly I didn't take pictures of this table. Dan Lane would move on to win the tournament, so i pride myself being the single draw on his record for this event.
Round #3: The Bigger The Better
Drawing is similar to Losing always somewhat of a downer early on in such an event, as it usually means you drop out of the top field. This event turnt out very different and also, I got to face off against Juggernaut Alex Bundock and his Polish lancers.
The Bigger The Better is much like Meeting Engagement - but instead of 1 kill = 1 VP it was split up to where units of higher point-cost would reward higher VPs for being killed. A rule I like very much, as in other scenarios killing a Tiger is worth as much as killing a mule. Which is very counter-immersive. Anyhow: we played on a desert map with lots of buildings and high walls, which his cavalry could recce and regroup around but my tanks and armored cars didnt struggle much to keep up. We had a whole lot of nothing happening all game on my right hand side of the table where 80% of my army and his two tankettes fought an awkward battle of incompetence leading to nothing at all being killed (iirc), whereas all the action happend on my left, his right. here we had a glorious cat and mouse skirmish of 3 guntrucks, a CO, 2 At-rifles, 2 tanks, 1 armored car and one blob of my swordslingers against 4 of his vet. cavalry squads and two dakka-tanks. As this was his side of the board, so to speak, opposite to his deployment, he could occasionally bring his two med. howitzers and sniper to bear on me but to little effect with all the buildings in the way. While I was really not very effective at killing him, he got a tad bloodthirsty and charged his units in-between the houses all my units were hiding behind and around where, with time and many misses, i was able to pick his units apart.
Oddly having 2 infantry and a sniper next to the secondary for the whole game, I never realized this actively and thus never moved onto the secondary. But neither did he, so it was a win for me, with not secondary - and a bloody good game against Alex, who I count as a friend and ever helpful fellow hobbyist (he is the one who offered me a ride, had i stayed at the same hotel, and also provided me with a large tray for my army, as my travel-one is to small). Great guy, great game.
the last 4 of 36 lancers hiding behind a high wall. The lone bear holding down the med. artillery, after recrewing the other gun twice!
lots of my stuff just sitting around the right hand flank doing nothing. smoking tanks to the west.
dead lancers
Day One: 2 W - 0 L - 1 D and 2/3 secondary objectives
Round #4: Seize and Hold
On to a very interesting mission I've never seen before: Seize and Hold against one Paul Wickens and his Soviet horde (21 dice).
Table quarters, again, with 4 objectives, two per quarter, one in each placed by both players - however in a so small corridor that it didn't actually matter (8" from all table edges, 8" from long center line and 8" from other objectives. Essentially this means its a small, 8"*16" corridor, which, after the native player places his objective gets roughly cut in half or more... so it's more an illusion of choice when placing an objective in the enemy quarter.
I placed my objective in Pauls quarter as close to his tableflank and the long centerline as possible, put 3 squads of infantry and a whole train of stuff into outflank. My plan was to push into his sector and onto the objective with sheer brute force. My armor was reserved to come in mid table from my long side to stop any pushes from his to my diagonally-opposed quatre and also stop anyone trying to take the secondary - but me (I now had learnt that they were worth an actual tournament point each - rather than just being tie-breakers). the rest, roughly a third of my army deployed in my sector to block off any chance of his to come from reserve onto my two objectives. I was playing for the win big time.
Sadly the table was spammed with hard-cover, LOS-blocking buildings and HIDDEN-rules were in play. Sadly Paul never even tried mounting an attack on my objectives and played for the draw right from the get go. Bringing in his reserved infantry not to challenge me, but to pack his short board edge so my out flankers were unable to arrive from more than 24" into the table. where a convenient wall was placed with hidden vet. Scouts in Ambush, who simply waited the whole game for my outflank to happen. Along with them Scouts he had 12 dogteams and two fausts all hiding (actually "hidden" keyword" behind houses and his two heavy autocannons in constant ambush. His entire setup screamed "You Shall Not Pass". Since Im not part of the GB championship, of which the Welsh Nationals is one of the three tourstops, I had no reason to play the long game. And personally I find playing for draws in singles events very unsatisfactory. So I pushed him as hard as I could. starting wiht an AT rifle to bait an ambush, which he didnt trigger, but using them boies to spot all his hidden units on that side and even killing a vet. tankhunter behind one of the houses, trying to get them fausts removed. I was right at the wall with his scouts, about 5" from the objective i had placed for me. He charged the AT rifle with the hunters - and got killed :D. Hopefully I roll a d6 regroup, to land 2" further up, not far enough to cross the wall and clear the 1" gap of the scouts.... But he charges me again, this time a dog-team. He dies, again. I regroup, this time a whole... 2" across the wall and painfully close to the objective. I could smell it. one of his snipers close by turns and kills one of the team, when of course i fail my morale check and get routed.
I drive up my truck to "the wall", he ambushes me a bit earlier to limit my pour-out. where i roll another glorious 2 to only make it up to the wall, now with a pin and having taken losses almost impossible to get the squad to move up to the objective. But im lucky. He charges me with a squad of his inex. infantry, which my tough fighting shirkers of course snack up and regroup...... 2" over the wall, but not far enough. These last 2 survivors get mopped up by something else he has on that corner. which is most of his army. two more squads of infantry arrive from reserve but of course cannot move over the wall nor enter along his short edge due to his infantry being spread around there.
In a last ditch effort I successfully bait his ambushing autocannon and remaining faust with a racing utility truck of mine, running towards his other objective. After having baited him I race my armored car already on the field in an 24" dash toward the other objective to obstruct. we turn into turn 6 and i manage to activate the armored car first to connect with the objective. the game is won, i turn the car, fire 5 shots into his holding CO (going down) and into the autocannon, hitting 4 times. I fail to wound him at all with the 4 hits, neither the CO, we draw the last dice of the game. of course its his. autocannon activates through the pin, no problem. double hit. double pen. double boom boom goes my armored car. the game ends on a for me unhappy draw, However at least I got the secondary and had a fun game against Paul.

mid game, one can already see the reserves pouring hin along his short edge, where the veterans with SMG hold \"the wall\", my oibjective ever so close behind.
table layout. nothing at all happened on my side of the board. it all went down on his short edge of the board.
this could've been a thing of beauty - but he just had to get the dice and roll some good hits, did he :D...
Round #5: Meeting Engagement
A chill and easy last mission against the excellent Richard CZ and his Ghurkas. This was the only Ghurka army I faced at this event. To my big surprise and relief. Sadly in the one mission where they were probably best against me: kill points - and points per unit don't matter... and i have 27 squishy dice against his 16.
The mission, in case anyone doesn't know is: move on along your long table edge and simply kill the other guy better than he kills you. good stuff. I had two guntrucks with CO's and infantry outflanking both sides to allow some nice side/rear shots into any adventurous tanks and mop up rear placed artillery and support with my infantry. Ghurkas with an M3 Lee and Stuart were a different ballgame however. Richard brilliantly played a "denied flank", rendering anything i put on the other tablehalf - including my outflankers, redundant. All the action was always going to be on the small open corridor on the left table half. I took the secondary mid-table at my discression, as there was no one to contest and the battle raged to my left. his para-ghurkas, tanks and mortars against my armor and artillery. no point in tossing in infantry for me.
I beat him to a bloody pulp. Then he beat me to a bloody pulp. Then, pretty sure we were drawn, +1/-1 something, he had what felt like the upper hand, his Lee and stuart raigning supreme, my bigger guns dead/unmanned, my guntrucks having to hide from his stuarts firepower... didnt look to shiny. I brought my outflanks not to attack him - but along my own long edge sprinting over the open field towards the safety of houses to not get caught by his advancing army, which i couldnt stop in that concentration... All looked dire, until he, I think, became a bit bloodthirsty and rushed his brengineers in to kill a guntruck and tank in the middle of my bottom left army conentration. his flamer missed, and his 10 shots mmg caused but a pin. It was the top of a new turn and we were at about 10 vs 20 dice, having me draw first. my tank wiped out his engieneers with its 15 shots. he drew and activated his bren not to move, but shoot, not killing my guntruck again. he drew again, moving up his stuart into the fray and failed to kill the guntruck - again, also missing my tank with his AT gun. Now i activated my outflanking infantry which had entered the table and were pressed to the ground along my long edge to get up and run towards his lone, actived bren, proximity kill assured. one of my 4 guntrucks shot and caused 2 pins by damage (1 result) on his Lee, then my howitzer hit on a magical 6 on his Lee, causing damage through the roof for 4 pins, my mortar too hit on a 5+ ranging in (iirc) and caused damage for 4 pins total - routing the monster. my tripple pinned, indestructable gunbuggy activates for a fire - and this the stuart in short range blowing it up. We shook hands on a great and bloody game, ending 15 mins early. Secondary secured. Very good result against ghurkas in killpoints for this force.
a whole bunch of stuff just standing around uselessly. my right outflankers just taking pot-shots at super long range... you can see all my stuff on my left looking at the stuart that had just died there (some models already packed away).
you can see our three dead tanks and my burnt down armored car between the two houses. bloody mess.
Final Results:
3 W - 0 L - 2 D with 4 secondaries for 15 Tournament points. I cam in 4th, which I'm happy about with my Dutch.
Tournament take-aways: The event was well run, awesome prize-support, lots of awards, friendly people and organizers. The size of it meant that newecasual players could play more casually at their speed after the first round, while the nasty cheesers like myself got to play amongst themselves in the top 10ish. good stuff!
Also lunch was included in the very fair event-costs and the venue itself was handicapped-accessible and a proper nerd-heaven. Very cool!
Im not going to another BA event when I have to check into a hostel. not gonna do it.
In-Game-wise take aways:
I was unsure of the Dutch at 1250, as they do not get that much stronger with more points (imo), they excell at 750-1000 point games. Whereas many other nations can dramatically ramp up their power with them extra 250 points, for Dutch not really that much ramps up I think. I tried very hard to squeeze something sensible into the army.
However after the event I am positively surprised of how well they carried themselves at 1250. At times it almost feels like cheating running this army. You just have so much of everthing. So much redundancy, something dies? who cares, Ill put another 2-3 up there!
A word on missions: I am no fan of missions that lend themselves to be easily drawn, like "Seize and Hold", You spawn on two objectives - all you need to draw. All your units are hidden. Just hang tight and defend your position and you cant lose. For tourney play not my favorite. My guess is roughly a third or half of all tables drew that one.

2024.05.08 00:51 Unlucky-Yoghurt-143 Very important article from an Italian advocate regarding Milan’s financial situations…

… and the lack of investments in the team. The article has been translated by myself since it’s in Italian and non Italian readers would not understand it otherwise. I think it highlights very clearly the speculative way this club is being run (at the expense of sporting results and not only in Europe, not only in Italy, but even in the city of Milan itself, which now sees a clear domination from Inter, the likes of which our club has NEVER seen before in our entire history).
The translation is as follows (edit: this https://feliceraimondo.substack.com/p/previsione-bilancio-milan-202324 is the link)
“This year without the Champions semifinal, revenues will plummet -- guaranteed!"
A phrase we have often heard uttered by the fan in the bar downstairs or by fans on social media. In today's in-depth analysis we will highlight and explain why this risk has been averted and how Milan will manage to close the current financial year by arriving at about 450 million in revenues and closing in substantial balance even net of capital gains (a result that many other Italian clubs still struggle to achieve, having to resort to Player Trading to increase revenues and reduce the economic imbalance).
A virtuous management, to the point of being all too virtuous if we consider that the Rossoneri club as of June 30, 2023 spends only 31% of revenues on player and coach salaries (34% net of capital gains).
Things do not change if we look at the depreciation of players alone as of June 30, 2023, the latest official data available for all: 89 million for Inter, 146 for Juve, 50.8 for Milan, 78.3 for Napoli. In relation to available resources, Milan remains the top Italian club that invests the least on the team. Further down, it will be possible to read all the pink cost ratios, including agent expenses, with ad hoc histograms.
Today's analysis must necessarily start with the most recent fiscal year, the one ending June 30, 2023. Restatement of data on official consolidated financial statements:
Thanks to the "Budget Dashboard," an Excel tool that the writer has used for today's purposes, and which contains official data as of June 30, 2023, it is possible to immediately bring out the development of the Rossoneri club's revenues and costs, as well as to project the results into the future based on the information known.
The analysis, therefore, does not pretend to be gospel but aims to bring out with sufficient clarity those margins that the Rossoneri club can exploit to increase competitiveness on the field.
In the transition from FY 2021/22 to FY 2022/23, we noted the explosion of revenues (+106.9 million) thanks to:
to the increase in sponsorship and merchandising (a total of about 130 million); to the Champions League campaign (87.9 million); to both Italian and European box office (72.8 million). Undoubtedly, the sports results in the Champions League had a big impact on the final revenues. No reliance was placed on capital gains: revenues from player management affected very little (6.6 million).
But what will happen in the current season? Here is the simulation of the 2023/24 fiscal year that is based on knowable data and rumors that have emerged:
First of all, audiovisual revenues from Serie A will be essentially the same if not slightly better because of the better placing the club gets in the league (a third or second place is assumed). But even if Milan finishes fourth, domestic TV rights revenues would be very similar to last year's.
The most obvious decrease is related to audiovisual revenues and European cup premiums, which will be reduced by about 33 million due to the different European path. A blow that, however, will be completely absorbed by the excellent results you will read about below.
Sponsorship income will increase sharply thanks to the new Puma and Emirates contracts that started July 1, 2023 (so from the current fiscal year: increase of +15 each = 30 million) and thanks to the new sleeve sponsor MSC (we are talking about 5 million per season). The overall increase-taking all other contracts unchanged and barring other undisclosed agreements-is at least 35 million.
Income from competitions will decrease slightly because of the different European path, but nothing dramatic. In fact, as can be verified below, the box office in EL is nowhere near that in CL. Yet, thanks in part to the higher revenues in Serie A, the decrease will be quite small: about 6 million gross. For the last two home matches, revenues of 2 million per event have been assumed, in line with matches of that type.
PHOTO STADIUM REVENUE SUMMARY
(accessible at the bottom of the article, subject to subscription to the column)
Please note: so far the decreases related to the worst European campaign are completely absorbed by the larger increases related to sponsorship.
A big increase we notice in the management from Player Trading: thanks to the sale of Tonali and some temporary exits, the income from player management should amount to 54 million euros (equal to the 23/24 capital gains as anticipated in the 22/23 budget, i.e., 48 million, plus the receipts from temporary disposals).
It will be thanks to this that the club will record a substantial profit; however, it is worth noting that despite the worst European campaign, if by absurdity the club had obtained the same receipts from Player Trading as last season (6.6 million), subject to some non-controllable items (e.g., other revenues and income), the budget would have been equally balanced.
This is the substantial difference between Milan and some top Italian clubs: for the Rossoneri club, capital gains are not a survival tool (i.e., a "foundation" with which to embellish revenues and reduce the economic imbalance) but opportunities that can be freely seized or rejected; the choice is not dictated by the budget but by exquisitely technical or design reasons.
Exactly what happened with Tonali. Player Trading to support technical strengthening and that procures higher spending possibilities than in a situation where Player Trading is missing.
Now let us turn to costs. As shown in the "Market Dashboard," another Excel tool with which the writer accounts for the soccer market every year based on the data released by the media (for purchases and salaries) and those resulting in the balance sheet (depreciation of those who are sold), the following can be derived.
PHOTO DASHBOARD MARKET 23/24
(accessible at the bottom of the article, after subscribing to the column)
Players' salaries should have remained essentially unchanged because the 23/24 buying campaign perfectly balanced expenditures with revenues. Players' salaries - looking at the "Budget Dashboard" - erode 27% of revenues including capital gains, and with coaches it rises to 31% (which becomes 34% net of capital gains). This represents the most important expenditure for the club but, compared to that incurred by other Italian clubs in relation to revenues (Inter, Juve, Napoli), Milan is at the tail end as pink cost and is close to Napoli: numbers that at the moment illustrate a similar management of resources to the Neapolitan one. We do not go beyond half of the total revenues including capital gains.
Squad cost rule comparison as of June 30, 2023:
If we add up the costs for gross roster salaries (players + coaches including performance bonuses) + player depreciation + 2023 agent expenses (as communicated by the League) we arrive at 202 million euros: i.e., 50% of total revenues (so-called squad cost rule), a figure that could DECISIVELY increase. In fact, the percentage is well below the limit thresholds imposed by UEFA of 90% in 2023/2024 (current season), 80% in 2024/2025 and 70% from 2025/2026 onwards.
Wanting to conservatively consider the 70% limit, i.e., 20% more roster cost, Milan based on the current situation could afford to spend an additional 100 million on the roster without exceeding the UEFA parameters. With revenues as of June 30, 2024 of 450 million, including capital gains, Milan could invest up to 315 million on the squad (70% under UEFA rules, without considering the intermediate parameter of 80%).
This assumption, which barring other capital gains or major increases in the commercial sector would likely produce a major new budget deficit, is a deliberately exaggerated limit but one that makes it clear what today's margins of maneuver are for a club that invests "just" 200 million, or 50 percent of its revenues, on the squad. This is the opposite path from its direct rivals (Juve and Inter), which have significant deficits and spend more on the team. Is Milan exaggerating or is the competition exaggerating? As always, the truth lies in the middle: any excess is wrong.
"'Lawyer, but Milan has to comply with UEFA's Settlement Agreement... how do we put it?'"
Answer: we put it beautifully! The current budget numbers are largely in compliance with the commitments made with SA, which, for Milan, Juve, PSG, Monaco, Besiktas, Marseille, covers:
The main purpose of the settlement agreement is to ensure that clubs comply with the new stability requirements (the so-called football earning rules: Link), in the monitoring period assessed in the 2025/26 season (i.e. covering the reporting periods ending in 2023, 2024 and 2025).
Sports earnings are the difference between relevant income and relevant expenses (as specified in Appendix J) calculated in relation to a single reporting period. A licensee can have an earnings surplus or a deficit. An earnings surplus is generated when relevant income is greater than relevant expenses. A deficit is generated when relevant expenses are greater than relevant income.
In other words, in the monitoring period evaluated in the 2025/26 season, clubs must have an aggregate soccer earnings surplus, or an aggregate soccer earnings deficit within the acceptable deviation as provided by the new FFP. The acceptable variance is €5 million. However, the deficit can exceed this level by up to 60 million euros if this excess is fully covered by contributions or equity as planned.
Thus, the goal of the six clubs will be to meet these financial stakes and fall within the expected maximum aggregate deviation of 60 mln, which is the result of the sum of any deficits that will be recorded in the financial years ending in the 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons (monitoring 2025/26).
Currently, Milan presents these latest financial year results, which may slightly deviate from the reports sent to UEFA (as mentioned reported differently), but the end result is always very similar:
Season 2022/23: + 6.1 million Season 2023/24: + 32 million (estimated) Season 2024/25: (to be discovered) I remind everyone that the maximum aggregate deficit is -60 million, while Milan would currently be at almost +40 million in profit (aggregate seasons 22/23 + 23/24). This means that, paradoxically, in the 2024/25 season Milan could afford a deficit of 100 million while still meeting UEFA parameters.
Would you ever have thought that? Clearly it will never happen, but this is yet another clue that makes everyone understand how the club has resounding and completely untapped margins for expansion. I would add consciously. Reason? You have to ask the ownership: has a certain business plan been guaranteed to investors? RedBird must produce value but how it plans to do so, hence the development program, remains unknown. The stadium is certainly part of it. On the rest, who knows. We can only find out from the numbers, such as those you read in this analysis.
Each club under settlement agreement will also commit to send the CFCB's "financial police" an initial report within six months of signing the settlement agreement. But that's not all: each club will undertake to set interim financial targets for the reporting periods covered by the settlement agreement so that the total football profits assessed in the 2024/25 season (i.e., covering the reporting periods ending in 2023 and 2024) do not exceed the maximum aggregate deficit of 60mln euros. Thus, the additional and "anticipatory" goal for these clubs will be to fall within the expected maximum aggregate deviation of 60mln, which is the result of the sum of any deficits that will occur in the financial years ending in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons (2024/25 monitoring):
Season 2022/23: + 6.1mn Season 2023/24: + 32 million (estimated) There are also no problems for the intermediate financial target. As mentioned, Milan could have had a maximum aggregate of -60 million and instead will end up with a very substantial aggregate profit, close to 40 million.
Now the concept should finally be clear even to the least discerning fan: there is room for increased competitiveness under UEFA rules and without screwing it up, given and considering that the Milan Group as of June 30, 2023 had a Net Equity of +177.2 million (unaffected and indeed increasing further as of June 30, 2024), which can be used if needed for any minor imbalances due to "foot stomping on the accelerator pedal."
Is it possible that the Rossoneri fan should be afraid of feeling the wind in his hair, limiting his speed to 80 km/h even on the highway? Because that is the situation today. No one is asking to go flat out at 180 km/h from tollbooth to tollbooth, but this car can be pushed to higher speeds without being afraid of making accidents or getting traffic tickets. If you don't want to go up to the permitted limit, which is 130 km/h + the tolerance, take a deep breath and increase the engine revs to 110 km/h.
The phrase "we want to win," therefore, must be followed by concrete facts that can translate into more spending on the roster. Otherwise they will remain empty words, mercilessly belied by the numbers. Because winning by spending 50 percent of revenues on the roster is clearly more complicated than those clubs that invest between 65 percent and 80 percent of revenues. Then nothing detracts from the fact that the perfect season can happen (see Milan 2022 or Napoli 2023), but those are exceptions that confirm the rule, which is that usually those who spend the most and the best win. Expertise and data only go so far, which cannot be enough if your name is Milan and you have a history of success to defend and carry on.
Continuing with the analysis, player amortization should have gone up by about 19 million and, standing at 70 million, should account for 15 percent of revenues. A value that is still largely under control and can be further increased.
Optimistically, I have left service costs almost unchanged on the 100 million mark (due to the merger by incorporation, which will result in lower expenses) and have slightly reduced raw material costs related to the e-commerce business that has now been underway for a year. Slight decrease also for tender organization expenses, again due to the different European route.
Summing up, the total costs for FY 2023/24 should be in line with those of last year or slightly up as in my simulation.
All this will produce a profit well above that of FY 2022/23: no trophy to display in the showcase, that much is clear. But a result to be equally proud of, especially since it is linked to sound resource management, which in some ways can certainly be improved (e.g., costs for services still very high) and which is providing the club with spending margins that, however, must be used if one really wants to win and increase sporting competitiveness.
The path taken continues to be the right one, but we have now reached a point where the club needs to start increasing the costs of the roster in relation to revenues because closing with 30 million in profits, moreover taxed heavily, does not procure an extra star on the jersey.
On the contrary, fans would be happier if Milan used that money to renew the big boys, buy more important players further strengthening the team, and close at breakeven or perhaps with a tolerable deficit. The concept is this: the club should be managed also and above all as a soccer team, not only as a company that has to produce profits to sell to investors. Dear Gerry, these are the pros and cons of doing business with a sports team and in particular with Milan, which belongs to the elite of world soccer: there are many "Alfredos," the majority, who don’t give a damn about anything I have written in this post and simply want to see Theo renewing, a right-back stronger than Calabria, a center forward worthy of Milan, a coach worthy Milan, and so on.
It is the task of ownership and management to combine this irrational sentiment with numbers but, as you have ascertained, the goal is absolutely within reach of a club that should also aim to win today and should not settle for a CL placement in order to think only about building a stadium tomorrow, a fundamental step but one that does not replace everything else.
That said, with a potential partner, the development of the brand and commercial sector, as well as with the stadium owned ... the goal of 600 million in revenues net of capital gains and, therefore top 10 in the Money League, will become absolutely within reach within the next 5-7 years. The hope as a fan is that all this will also be followed by a definite surge in sporting ambitions and that the ownership will use the gasoline in the tank and the power in the engine. Critically, but without overdoing the opposite because Milan's ambitions cannot be like those of Napoli (what the ratios in the pink costs reveal to us today) with investments far from the virtuous top club management that instead should be similar to that of Bayern Munich, often taken as a model, which in 2022 between salaries and amortization spent 64.5 percent of total revenues and which has never gone down to 50 percent, fluctuating over the years between 65 percent and 70 percent, while keeping the budget balanced.
Thanks to the stadium? Not only that, thanks to commercial revenues but also to costs for materials and services of only 40 million compared to Milan's 100 (Link). A tangible sign that perhaps not everything is properly "indispensable" in that cauldron that today devours 25 percent of revenues, resources that could in part be diverted to the squad.
Today the goal to chase must be first and foremost the second star, not the third positive budget result, which is perfectly useless for UEFA purposes, and which represents an accident of the road welcome only to the investors of the RedBird fund or perhaps, in the future, to the stock markets for a possible stock market listing.
"Alfredo" and the other hundreds of millions of fans around the world, those pain in the asses who sign petitions to block an undesirable coach ... dream of only one thing: to win on the field and return to filling Piazza Duomo.

2024.05.07 23:44 viewtoathrill Dancer in the Dark (2000)

2024: Post #63 Watched April 7th On the original DVD studio release IMDB Directed by: Lars von Trier Written by: Lars von Trier, SjĂłn TSPDT: 721
140 minutes. Going into this run of Lars von Trier movies I would have assumed this was my favorite film of his. I saw this in theaters in 2000 and it absolutely wrecked me. I had seen it four times since then, most recently in 2007. Even 17 years later there were scenes I remembered vividly. I was very curious how it would hold up.
A common critique of this movie is there is no nuance from von Trier as he lays out the tragic dehumanization of Bjork’s Selma. Selma is a woman who is really struggling to get by. She lives paycheck to paycheck and can only really make it because a nice family lets her live in a trailer on their property. She has one son. She is obsessed with old Hollywood musicals, is a bit of a dreamer, and is a stubborn but sweet person. She also pulls a bit of money from every paycheck to save up for surgery for her son. They both share a degenerative eye disease that has her within days of going blind, and the surgery will be to help her son prolong his sight.
That’s the setup. From this premise, von Trier asks us to sit through 2 ½ hours of one of the most emotionally draining stories ever put to film. Nearly every person Selma trusts betrays her, she gets caught in a horrifying game of emotional manipulation and blackmail, and her core values are tested as she is ultimately forced to choose between her biggest dream (getting her son the surgery) or her own life. It’s heart wrenching, unflinching, horrible, brutal, every intense negative emotion you can imagine.
But I love it. I think it is simultaneously one of the best films about personal sacrifice while also pointing out the inherent flaws in the belief that our actions can save another. Without giving away spoilers, Bjork makes some decisions regarding her son that would be very important to get his input on. In an attempt to save him from blindness, which is noble, she stubbornly and blindly pushes ahead to follow through with her plan which includes not letting him know why he’s getting surgery.
As tragic as this is, I also don’t feel it’s overkill. Von Trier punishes the audience, but in the pain is a portrayal of the ultimate sacrifice. It’s a difficult, but powerful, movie featuring two of the best pure musicians in the world writing music and a bevy of fascinating technical approaches created to give the film a look that had not been accomplished despite the low grade film stock. If you can stomach a very depressing movie I would say this is a must watch.

2024.05.07 23:15 Soonerwatch Sedona Elite hip pain side sleeper - what to choose next?

We are about 90 days in with the sedona elite medium feel. I'm a side sleeper and started having hip pain about 15 days after we received the bed. I like everything else about the bed. Cooling seems to be decent. I notice that brooklyn bedding only allows you to return one mattress under the 120 day policy. If you order another it cannot be returned. So I am a little hesitant to just swap the sedona for one of their plush mattresses. I guess I might be able to take another bite at the apple if I order it under my wife's name (we have different last names).
For anyone who has experienced shoulder / side / hip pain with sedona elite I'd like to know what you traded it for and the results. Thanks.

(Previous Part)
(Part 001)
On the world of Volgarius, inside the Founder's Thumb.
Unarin calmly walks into the main command center of the upper floors. He pauses for a second, looking at the dedicated team of Technopaths and Changelings who keep his mighty empire running, with all of them either directly linked to massive central networks that collect and gather information from abroad, or those who remain in contact with military forces currently in conflict.
In the center of the room, a massive hologram of the Milky Way spirals slowly above a table with a hole cut in is center. Various items sit on the tabletop, including datapads, experimental technology that has yet to be deployed in the field, and important design documents in need of approval.
Standing in the center of the table is none other than Unarin's obsidian-skinned brother, Randis, one of the three Ascended that live permanently inside the Founder's Thumb.
Randis looks up at the galactic hologram. Hundreds of points of light stand out from the rest, with some of them colored red, some colored yellow, and some colored blue. As for the vast majority, they are colored red.
The different colors, of course, represent worlds in various levels of danger, usually due to the Plague. White-colored worlds have no current major problems to speak of, and can run without Randis's intervention. Blue worlds exist in the periphery of danger and could come under threat at any time. Yellow worlds are at extreme risk from the Plague or have had major disruptions reported, while the red worlds are under attack and require immediate assistance.
When Unarin glances at the current situation of the Milky Way, as he usually does, he pauses for a moment to frown.
Slowly, he walks over to the edge of the table while his brother Randis continues to focus on the projection above him, reaching out to touch the differently-colored dots and issue commands to the forces stationed on those worlds as required.
After ten long seconds of silence, irritation flashes across Randis's face. He doesn't look at Unarin, but his attention noticeably shifts to the red-skinned Ascended.
"What is it?"
Randis's tone does not contain any warmth or brotherly love. He continues to remain focused on his duties.
"The number of Reds seems lower than usual." Unarin says. "Substantially so."
"You can thank the demons for that." Randis says. "Diablo has been up to his usual antics. He has 'helpfully' liberated more than a hundred worlds from the Plague so far. Curiously, he tends to focus on worlds currently in the process of being overrun, not worlds that have long become Kolvaxian strongholds."
"He's stopping the Plague from expanding." Unarin says mildly. "But at the same time, he's taking territory away from us. He's earning double the gains while expending half the effort."
"It's truly a genius play." Randis praises sarcastically. "And we can't do anything to stop him. The worlds he's taking from us were already going to be overrun by the Plague anyway. We just have to grit our teeth and endure."
"The Plague makes no further gains, we continue to lose power, and the Demons only strengthen over time." Unarin concludes. "This situation is starting to feel... untenable."
"Indeed." Randis says.
He continues to interact with the Volgrim Net, communicating in parallel with thousands of Volgrim thanks to his exceptional brain and talent at multi-tasking, but this doesn't even slightly harm his ability to hold a conversation.
"Is that all?" Randis eventually asks.
Unarin folds his hands behind his back. Then, he turns and walks away.
"Yes. That is all, brother. Keep up the good work."
"Don't tell me what to do." Randis retorts. "I am well aware of what our Empire needs."
Unarin pauses to look back at his brother, but eventually continues on his way without saying a word.
As he exits the Command Center, Unarin encounters Muuxunuu, his trusted administrator of affairs. She stands silently in the hallway, clearly waiting for him to exit, with her palms clasped at her waist.
"He still hates me." Unarin mutters.
"Yes." Muuxunuu says, in that same semi-robotic tone she always uses. "This is unlikely to change at any point in the future without external means."
Unarin smiles. He walks up to Muuxunuu and reaches his hand out to stroke her hair-tendrils. Her expression remains impassive as he kneads and toys with them lovingly, but her eyes do twitch slightly, revealing some sort of suppressed emotion.
"You used to love when I did this." Unarin murmurs. "What I wouldn't give to go back to those days..."
"My likes and dislikes are irrelevant." Muuxunuu says. "I came to find you because it is time for the Ascension Refresh."
"Oh." Unarin says as he reaches over to hold her chin in his hands, massaging the tip of her jaw with his thumb. "So soon? Feels like I did it just a few cycles ago."
"Synchronization coherency has decreased by 1.2% as a result of losing two worlds critical to the Ascension Net's infrastructure." Muuxunuu explains, unmoved by Unarin's touch. "The Ascension Net is at risk of decoupling several million users as a result."
Unarin finally pulls his hands away from Muuxunuu and sighs heavily, as if the weight of the world has momentarily increased by a hundredfold.
"Very well. I guess I'll deal with that, next."
He and Muuxunuu turn and walk down the hallway together. Unarin deliberately places his hand on Muuxunuu's back, but like always, she does not respond to his touch.
Even so, it still provides the First Founder a faint sense of comfort.
"Truly, I miss the old times..." He says to himself.
The two ascend upstairs until they reach Unarin's Sanctum, then they head inside through its giant double doors. Unarin and Muuxunuu eventually step into a small room located off to the side where a large glass pod filled with bubbling liquid resides.
Without fanfare, Unarin strips off his clothes, then climbs above the tank and hops inside, inhaling deeply to fill his lungs with the watery concoction.
Following this, he waits.
His consciousness becomes hazy.
His eyes begin to flutter...
He drifts off into an endless sleep, all while Muuxunuu keeps careful watch over his body's physical condition.
...
Unarin awakens.
He opens his eyes to find himself dressed in a resplendent and glorious military uniform, one that denotes his status as the Highest Among High. Its white color and red pinstripes give him a distinctive flair for the extravagant, making him appear a leader among exobeasts.
The world fizzles around Unarin, and countless tall, glittering white structures spring into existence.
Different from the bland and utilitarian stratoscrapers on Volgarius, these buildings only rise up a few thousand feet into the sky, and each one is completely unique. One building resembles a corkscrew with a lance stabbed through its center, as if someone had enveloped an ancient weapon with an observation deck just for their own pleasure.
Another structure looks like a series of geometric shapes stacked on top of and beside one another, making it mind-bending to look at.
And still another resembles a giant statue of Unarin himself, his palm lifted before himself, a simulacrum of the Milky Way suspended above his palm, slowly rotating as if to imply the First Founder has the entire galaxy in his grasp. What is most impressive, though, is that the miniature galaxy is not a hologram, but more than a billion tiny spheres, each a quarter the size of a standard playing marble, and all of them colored and carved with intricate detail to reflect the properties of the worlds and stars they represent.
How long could such an incredible display have taken to create? Only the greatest craftsman among the Ascended would know...
Unarin finds himself standing inside the Ascension Net, where hundreds of thousands of other Ascended walk around, their differently-colored skin making them resemble a living rainbow made of flesh and cloth. Surprisingly, most of the Ascended do not look impressive. They wear ordinary civilian clothes with simple colors and basic patterns. But among them, elites stick out here and there, wearing more elaborate military garb, training outfits for combat, and even heavy armor meant for military warfare. Innumerable trillions of Ascended live their lives inside the Ascension Net, but in this particular capital city, only fifty million or so can call it their home.
The moment Unarin arrives, the beautiful blackened starry sky above changes color. Its hue turns red, and an automated voice speaks from above.
"First Founder Unarin has made landfall in the city district of New Velaria. All citizens in the area, be alert for his movements and show all proper respect to his greatness."
Immediately, every Ascended in the city pauses what they are doing to look around them, uncertain where Unarin has arrived. Those nearest the First Founder spot him before the rest, and excitement appears in their eyes.
"He's here! First Founder! We are honored by your presence!"
"The Greatest Ascended! Everyone, show respect!"
"Step aside, Lord Vetreus is on his way!"
Countless cries go up among the crowd. Even after a million years of coming into the Ascension Net, Unarin has not spoken to or contacted more than 90% of the Volgrim currently residing within it. A chance to get just a glimpse of the First Founder is unfathomably rare, so his appearances always spark a great fervor among the crowd.
"Everyone, everyone. Thank you." Unarin says politely, nodding to those nearby while offering a friendly wave. Unlike the heavy emotions he displayed before entering the Ascension Net, he puts on a good show of compassion and strength for his fellow Ascended. "You honor me."
The crowd continues to cheer, while a noticeably taller blue-skinned Ascended wearing a black uniform pushes through them, making his way toward Unarin. When he reaches the First Founder, he pauses to bow at the waist.
"Founder Unarin. Thank you for visiting my city."
"Brother Vetreus," Unarin says, walking over to pat the other's shoulder. "There's no need to stand on formality. Let us retire to a quieter place. I need to speak with the Velaria Council."
"Of course." Vetreus says, straightening his posture to return to his full height. He stands more than a head taller than the First Founder, yet his presence somehow seems smaller due to Unarin's regal aura. "No doubt, they are already preparing for your arrival."
The two of them cut through the crowd, with all the Ascended nearby spreading out and making room for Unarin to walk. None of them do anything as vulgar as attempting to touch or speak to him, as their respect for him is higher than the heavens!
Before long, Unarin and Vetreus walk into a large building best described as a series of cubes separated by various walkways, each cube representing a structure isolated from the rest, levitating in the air via anti-gravitic propulsion. The extravagant cost of such a building could not easily be paid in the modern times; only in the Ascension Net where resources are practically infinite.
"Tell me," Vetreus says casually. "How goes the War outside?"
"Quite well." Unarin says with a smile. "The Volgrim still rule the galaxy. As of late, the Plague has all but frozen its advance thanks to assistance from a certain group of mud-dwellers. They came up with an innovative method to push those monsters back, and as a result we have begun to make inroads towards claiming the lost territory once again."
"Good. Good!" Vetrues says twice. "In truth, First Founder, I was beginning to feel dread toward the situation outside. The Ascended could be an incredible asset in the War. Why have you held off on at least deploying our elite shock troops?"
Unarin shakes his head. "It would be a complete loss for us if the Plague managed to capture just one Ascended. Its ability to assimilate the strengths of those it devours makes the Plague a fearsome adversary. Do you want the bodies of every Kolvaxian to become as strong as ours?"
"Hmm... that is true." Vetreus murmurs with a troubled expression. "I suppose that means you do not intend for our people to make their arrival onto the scene just yet."
"If I can help it, none of the Ascended will ever do battle with the Kolvaxians." Unarin sighs heavily. "The day I issue that demand will be the day I must admit the war is likely lost."
Vetreus pauses his walking to turn and direct a grim gaze at Unarin.
"Brother Unarin. Do you truly have so little faith in us?"
"It's not that." Unarin says, smiling weakly. "But if the true power of the Ascended must be unleashed, I would rather it be in glorious battle against the Dark Ones, rather than their weakest minions..."
"Ah. Then I shall not press the issue further." Vetreus concedes.
They resume walking, enter a grav-lift, and transfer between three different levitating cube-facilities before arriving in the uppermost one, where they step into a conference room with fifteen chairs positioned around a table.
At once, beams of light flash inside the room. Thirteen different Ascended materialize, each one a powerful warrior, diplomat, or other such talented figure of ancient yore. They wear extravagant robes, uniforms, and light armor, making them appear either fearsome or renowned in some capacity.
Even so, none of them immediately speak, but instead bow their heads to wait while Unarin walks to the head of the table, and pulls out the chair there.
As he takes a seat, with Vetreus sitting on his immediate right, Unarin waves his hand.
"Begin."
The other thirteen raise their heads. They also sit down, lining the table off into the distance as they look at Unarin with respectful gazes.
"First Founder." A blue-skinned woman on Unarin's left says. Her crimson eyes and ornately decorated hail-tendrils give her a princess-like vibe. "Recently, 20 million Ascended were abruptly disconnected from the Ascension Net. I would like to know what caused this malfunction."
Unarin's right eye twitches. "Lady Perii. A world essential to the Ascension Net's infrastructure was overtaken by the Plague. As a result, we suffered a momentary but severe outage until the backups on other worlds took over the processing burden."
He pauses for half a breath before adding, "But you need not be worried. We have backed up the connections and restored those we lost. They will return soon enough."
"That is good." Perii says slowly. She runs her fingers along the seams of her ornate red and gold dress, accentuating her figure. "But what of the War situation? For an entire planet to fall..."
"We lose minor planets all the time." Unarin says dismissively. "They do not possess much value, so we ignore them. Rarely do the Volgrim suffer a loss to our core systems. As I told Vetreus on the way here, one of our vassal species, the Demons, has recently obtained a unique ability to devour the Plague. Emperor Diablo has been core in pushing the Plague back, and thus we are looking to reward him with commendations, given time."
"So there is a light at the end of the galaxy." Another female Volgrim says. With skin as black as Randis's, she wears a light ensemble of skull-covered armor and other decorations on her tendrils to make herself appear fearsome to her foes. "Does that mean that you do not intend to awaken the Ascended after all?"
"Apologies, Admiral Merris." Unarin says. "I have not yet made up my mind. The War is looking winnable now, but it will take time for us to be sure."
"Mmm..." Merris says, her eyebrows knitting together. "My soldiers have long looked forward to making their triumphant return to the outer galaxy. I hope you will make a determination sooner rather than later."
Unarin tosses his hands lightly. "There are many conflicting factors at play. Placing the Ascended in the Plague's way could serve to empower our foes. I do not wish to do that unless necessary. In the meantime, Project Blinding Light may serve a greater purpose in the future. You should all prepare yourselves in case I need you to activate it."
"Is the project ready?" Perii asks. "I was under the impression it was... only experimental."
"It is." Unarin says mildly. "But should a crisis emerge, it will perform as predicted. I have looked into the theory myself and validated it with the High Technopaths."
"We should abide by Unarin's commands." Vetreus says, warning his fellow council members. "He is the one who saved our Empire. Unarin knows best."
"Unarin knows best." The other Ascended say, nodding their heads at him.
The meeting continues for a while, with Unarin informing everyone of the goings-on in the outer galaxy. Eventually, he concludes the talks, and departs the room with Vetreus at his side.
As the two men walk down the hall, Vetreus smiles at Unarin.
"All this heavy talk makes one's mind weak. Let us discuss something lighter."
Unarin nods. "That would be best."
"Your wife!" Vetreus says cheerfully. "How is she faring these days? She still has yet to enter the Ascended Net. She's still alive, isn't she?"
Unarin's expression remains calm. However, a faint gloominess builds up in his eyes. He lowers his gaze for a moment while he walks, but Vetreus does not notice.
"Yes. Muuxunuu... she is as well as ever." Unarin says numbly. "I've asked her to visit the Ascension Net time and time again, but she simply doesn't seem interested. I'm sorry for her... lack of concern."
"No, no. It is fine." Vetreus says, still smiling. "Lady Muuxunuu is truly the most beautiful of our people. The kindest, most compassionate. Ahh, so many suitors were jealous that you won her hand, back in the ancient times. Everyone feels more assured because she is there to keep your spirits up while you fight this damned War."
"Aye. Every time I look at her..." Unarin says, his words catching in his throat for half a breath, "...I feel the same love that I always have."
"Good, good." Vetreus says. "And what of Randis? Is your brother doing well, too?"
"He leads the war effort." Unarin says neutrally. "Every day, he manages tens of thousands of minor and major matters. The Empire would not be the same without him behind the scenes. Randis is... truly irreplaceable."
"Haha, excellent, most excellent." Vetreus says, never once having noticed the faint pain in Unarin's voice. To him, the First Founder has always been a cold and logical Sentient. He does not seem to be acting out of character in the least. "If it were not for the three of you, we might never have defeated those damned Sentinels. You must take care to always stick together, First Founder. Only the bonds of love you three share can give you the strength to stand bravely against our monstrous foes."
Unarin swallows a lump in his throat. "I couldn't... put it better if I tried."
Unarin finishes his business inside the Ascension Net, then he eventually disconnects.
His consciousness resurfaces inside the tank full of liquid, and he emerges from its watery depths soaked to the bone.
As the First Founder climbs out of the tank and splashes messily across the floor, Muuxunuu stands at the ready, a large towel held in her grasp.
"First Founder." Muuxunuu says emotionlessly. "Allow me to dry your body."
"Oh. You don't have to do that..." Unarin says. "I'll just use a sonic shower."
"Your statement is correct. I do not have to." Muuxunuu says. "But I still wish to do so."
"That... alright then." Unarin says softly.
He extends his arms outward, allowing the pink-skinned Ascended woman to wipe at his nude body, drying him attentively.
As Muuxunuu starts from his feet and works her way up, her eyes meet Unarin's when she goes to dry his arms. In that instant, a faint spark appears in her pupils.
But then it disappears.
She looks away and finishes drying him off.
Then, she steps back and looks at him with no expression at all.
"The task is finished. I have cleaned your clothes and set them over there."
Unarin doesn't immediately walk over to where she indicated. Instead, he stands in place, looking at her with a complicated gaze.
He takes a step toward Muuxunuu, and she remains in place.
Then he takes another step, and another...
He walks over to her, then strokes her neck with his hand. He plays with her hair-tendrils, but she still shows no reaction.
"You know..." Unarin says quietly. "Brother Vetreus asked about you. I had to lie to him again."
"What is there to lie about?" Muuxunuu asks, uncomprehending.
"What, indeed?" Unarin says bitterly.
He leans his face towards hers, as if to gently kiss her, but he pauses mid-movement and pulls away.
"No." Unarin says, lowering his eyes. "I don't deserve it."
Ultimately, he turns away from Muuxunuu and slowly shuffles back to his regal garb. He slides his robes back on, but each piece of fabric presses on him like an anvil, the burden of their significance feeling unearned, and making him uncomfortable from the bottom of his soul.
After he finishes, Unarin stares ahead blankly at the wall.
"...It was the right thing to do." He whispers. "I had to do it. It was the only way."
"But why... why did she have to pay the heaviest price?"
The question he whispers into the void receives no reply.
Perhaps there are no longer any who are capable of answering...

2024.05.07 21:25 imaloserdudeWTF Brittney Griner - Her book is finally available!

I've waited for a year and finally I'll get my answers:
https://preview.redd.it/bgm6c3k002zc1.png?width=309&format=png&auto=webp&s=d38271087400c13c96a1daa27d8530be60e16ca4
We need to see more books written or co-authored by our WNBA stars! BG's book is officially available today and I ordered myself a copy. I want to know who this superstar was when she was a little kid, bullied by the kids in her class because of her size and voice. I want to know how her father raised her, and why she owned up to the mistake that cost her her freedom for nine months (but could've been nine years), and how she found solace in the sport of basketball when others treated her badly for just being who she is. I want to know how she endures the pains and aches of competition, the successes and failures that come with being an elite basketball athlete. And the way I can do this is to read her story. I'll have the book in a few days and I can't wait. This will be the first memoir of a WNBA star that I read, and certainly not the last. I need to educate myself and I encourage others to do the same thing.
There are lots of videos of her interviews over the past few days on YouTube. Just search for "Brittney Griner Coming Home" and decide for yourself if she is someone you'd like to know more about. I already made my decision and the book is on the way.

Even before he really knew what it meant, Allen Wong wanted to be rich. As a kid, he didn’t yet equate the word with “luxury” or “status” or “expensive things.” He didn’t think wealth would bring him 85-inch televisions and Jacuzzis, a one-of-a-kind rose-gold Lamborghini in the garage, a wearable Iron Man suit that shoots lasers — though he does, actually, have all of that now. What “rich” seemed to dangle was something simpler, more elementary, more a feeling than anything else: freedom from pain.
Wong’s parents had fled poverty — at one point, his father used tennis balls as flotation devices to illicitly cross waters from Guangzhou into Hong Kong — in order to raise a family in a more opportune land. But growing up in New York City, Wong watched one parent peddle medicinal herbs all day long while the other toiled away in a Chinatown sweatshop. They barely had time to slough off one workday before trudging into the next.
“I didn’t want my life to end up like that,” he told me. “I didn’t want to be absent from my family and only show up a few hours each day after work. I didn’t want my life to be monotonous and stuck in a repeating loop until I die.”
Then, in 2008, right as he was graduating from college, the family convulsed. Wong’s father was ousted from his business, sank into a depression and committed suicide; his mother tripped down a spiral of mental illness. Suddenly, Wong’s entry-level computer programming job was the household’s only source of income, and there was a world financial crisis going on. He had always dreamed about digging out of the middle-class quagmire — striking gold, pulling in enough money from a one-off idea that he would never have to work the way his parents did. But it was now, as anxiety and medical bills piled up, that those idle daydreams began to feel urgent and necessary. So he turbocharged his ambitions. He started coding around the clock, tinkering on D.I.Y. software ideas whenever he wasn’t at work, barely sleeping. He doggedly pushed one project after another to the App Store, praying for something to take off.
Eventually, one did: an app that let users tune in to police scanners around the world. Then another. Their runaway success took even him by surprise. By the time his peers were splurging on their first West Elm sofas, he was a self-made multimillionaire.
Wong found his day job interesting enough, and he liked his colleagues. But submitting himself to a boss’s whims, spending his days trapped like a houseplant under corporate fluorescence, grated at him; it reminded him too much of his parents’ suffering. What, he wondered, could a so-called career really offer him if he had already secured enough money for a good life? The whole point of working was to get what he had just gotten. So, at 25, he bought a $250,000 sports car painted a shimmery lime green — it wasn’t so crazy a purchase, he reasoned, because his police-scanner app was by then generating that amount of revenue in a single month — and announced that he was retiring forever.
It was only after he bought a second exotic car, a five-bedroom house in Celebration, Fla., a dog and a Disney World annual pass for his mother that Wong learned that there was an entire online community of people seeking to do what he had just done. Wong had heard of the Financial Independence Retire Early (FIRE) movement before, but he didn’t think it really applied to him because of its focus on frugality. FIRE got its start in the early 2000s with a mantra of extreme saving — you may remember hearing about stoic ultraminimalists living off beans and friends’ couches — but it has since come to include all the people who would like to exit the work force on their own terms, at an age of their own choosing, rather than hustling for a paycheck all the way into their 60s. After Wong made a Reddit post sharing his story, it attracted such a flurry from FIRE adherents that he quickly became the quasi president of one of the group’s biggest online enclaves.
Some FIRE aspirants still get to early retirement by the traditional route of simply saving madly. Others, though, truffle-hunt for high-paying W-2s, tax loopholes, bold and risky market bets or big entrepreneurial ploys like Wong’s. The overarching credo of FIRE is that in today’s unpredictable financial landscape, 9-to-5s and decades-long careers have become bad investments: Old-school benefits like pensions and job security are a thing of the past, and wages aren’t even keeping up with the galloping pace of inflation. According to a 2023 survey, one-quarter of Americans would like to retire before age 50. After decades of tolerating workaholic culture as the norm, employees are tired, unafraid to show it and yearning to yank back control of their lives. To fed-up workers willing to do a little bit of math, FIRE offers a straightforward antidote: You can just leave it all behind.
Like Wong, and like so many other people who chase financial independence, I didn’t grow up with a lot of money — which might be why I became obsessed with it.
Long before “side hustle” became Merriam-Webster lingo, I was working Costco snack arbitrage on the elementary-school playground and hawking homemade bookmarks to my teachers. In adulthood, I moved on to online surveys, research studies, plasma donation, vintage resale, parts modeling and dog-sitting in other people’s homes in lieu of paying rent. I have left no income source unturned. I’ve trawled every page of NerdWallet and The Points Guy. I have made questionable margin calls. I have woken up at the crack of dawn to day-trade $NVDA, $TSLA, $TSM. I have “flipped”; I have “churned.” When I feel sad, I open my phone to check on the interest rates in the five-pronged CD ladder I’ve lovingly assembled in my Marcus account, like a tic, to feel better.
Come on, Kids. Let’s Grab Drinks. ImageWong in his Ironman suit standing next to the bathtub. Wong created a police-scanner app that was so popular that it allowed him to retire at 25.Credit...Maggie Shannon for The New York Times Is this all embarrassing to confess? Incredibly so. Would I characterize my relationship to money as “unhealthy”? Also yes. But I often wonder if anybody in this economy, in this country — where more than 60 percent of the work force lives paycheck to paycheck, where the average American is in five- to six-figure debt and often has only cursory knowledge of how he or she got there — has a healthy relationship to money. Simply learning to understand your own finances can feel, several FIRErs said to me, like acquiring a “secret weapon.”
The original FIRE doctrine revolves around delay of gratification. Save your money — ideally as much as 50 to 75 percent of each paycheck — instead of spending it immediately, and when you’ve amassed enough of a nest egg, quit your job and take the rest of your life for yourself. “It’s simple, because the main principles fit on a Post-it note,” Jacob Lund Fisker, a Danish former astrophysicist who is often thought of as the father of the FIRE movement, told me. “However, it is not easy, because everything the typical middle-class consumer has been raised and trained to believe goes against these principles. People have grown up associating success with money and spending money with happiness. They’ve been trained to sit still and perform repetitive work, first by a teacher, then by a manager. They’ve been educated to be specialists in a narrow field and never think outside that box.”
Fisker’s 2010 book, “Early Retirement Extreme” — written mostly while he lived out of an R.V. on $7,000 a year — is one seminal text for early retirees. Two others are “Your Money or Your Life,” a 1992 personal-finance bible written by Joseph R. Dominguez and Vicki Robin, and the blog Mr. Money Mustache, started in 2011 by Peter Adeney, who retired from his software-engineering job in 2005 at age 30 and figured out how to shrink his family’s expenses down to just $24,000 a year. The tao of all three tomes is that minimalist spending and anti-consumption can offer the keys to better living. (Adeney has professed to be “really just trying to get rich people to stop destroying the planet,” but his tens of thousands of monthly visitors tend to be more fixated on his other mantra: “Make you rich so you can retire early.”)
Conventional FIRE adherents are not necessarily big earners or genius mathematicians with incredible impulse control. Their superpower is their expert planning; it’s the ability to see the finish line from miles away that has allowed even some minimum-wage workers to achieve early retirement. One simple FIRE rule of thumb is to first calculate your target “FI number” by multiplying anticipated annual retirement expenses by at least 25, and then squirrel away as much as possible into interest-accruing or tax-advantaged buckets like 401(k)s, low-fee index funds, certificates of deposit, HSAs and Roth IRAs until you hit that number. As an example, if you bring home $150,000 a year, can save half of that and plan to spend $50,000 per year in retirement, then it will take only 16.5 years before you can kiss your job goodbye. For those who earn less or spend more, it will take longer — but for still others who can endure greater sacrifices, FIRE can be possible as early as their 30s.
From these plain origins, many offshoots of FIRE have sprouted up — some much more brazen than others. It’s rare to find anyone these days who actually wants to get to early retirement by living off beans; those people, with their stringent penny-pinching, are largely known in the community as LeanFIRE. A lot more people aim for CoastFIRE (a more measured approach that involves front-loading your retirement savings and “coasting” on compound interest and working lightly until you’re ready to quit) or BaristaFIRE (quitting your job but buttressing your retirement with a side gig, such as that of a part-time barista, to receive health-insurance benefits) or FatFIRE (a luxurious, no-sacrifice approach to retirement, the polar opposite of LeanFIRE — and the subset to which Wong belongs).
You might be tempted to regard early retirees as layabouts, soaking up sunshine while everyone else toils. But why not see them as brave maniacs, daring to build an entirely new vision of the world? Retirement has long been framed as a reward for a job well done — social reformers started pushing for mandatory post-work benefits in the early 20th century, and policies like Social Security later codified the tipping point between labor and leisure — but if FIRE’s incredible popularity of late (the Fire subreddit alone boasts nearly half a million members) is a defiant reaction to economic hardship, then it’s also a plea to re-evaluate the centrality of work to modern living. Maybe, the movement suggests, we should have always been in it for ourselves, and nobody else, from the start.
To my left was a woman who runs a phone-sex hotline; to my right, a cruise operator, a disaster-response volunteer, a kitchen-appliance entrepreneur, a public-school teacher and a former Off Broadway actor who now lives out of the back of an 18-wheeler and puts 70 percent of her weekly paycheck into index funds. It was a chilly spring weekend, and we had all flown to Cincinnati for EconoMe, an annual all-flavors-of-FIRE conference in which hundreds of people of all ages, from all over, bandy about tips on financial independence from dawn to dusk. The point of FIRE meetups — EconoMe is the largest, but others take place all over the world, some of them at a monthly clip — is only partly to give fiscal advice. Every person’s retirement plan is a highly individualized choreography, after all, so the manifold workshops and breakout groups are meant to offer only high-level ideas. The broader purpose of these get-togethers is more a sort of group therapy, geared to help people achieve their common goals and forge through their common struggles.
Much of the crowd was timid but curious — like Laura Rojo-Eddy, who decided on a whim to fly out from Texas. “My family doesn’t know anything about FIRE,” she told me. “I’ve been really shy talking about it. It’s hard to talk about finances with strangers, but in a way it’s even harder with people you love.” She chanced upon the movement in 2021 via a former colleague’s LinkedIn post, which made her consider for the first time that she may not have to work until the standard age of 65. The friend “posted she was retiring thanks to FIRE, and I was like: That’s really cool! But what the hell is she talking about? And, holy crap, this person’s my age — 40 — and what if I could do that? Should I do that?”
At EconoMe, bank-account totals were traded more freely than phone numbers. The conference’s organizer, Diania Merriam (retired at 33), introduced speakers like Jeremy Schneider (retired at 36), who spoke about how to pick a good financial adviser; the retired divorce lawyer Aaron Thomas, who evangelized the importance of prenups; the real estate tax strategist Natalie Kolodij, who discussed real estate investing and recommended employing your children starting from the age they are able to do household chores, which offers a double benefit of reducing a parent’s taxable income while building an investment-accruing tax shelter for the 7-year-old. Stephanie Zito’s two-hour seminar on the nitty-gritty of “travel hacking,” a.k.a. traversing the world through strategic deployment of credit-card points, had the crowd on the edge of their seats.
In one morning session, a brave volunteer named Krista put her life’s “balance sheet” up on a big screen so that 500 strangers could critique it for blind spots. She is 35, with four kids ages 16, 15, 9 and 7, and makes $32,000 working in a library in Wisconsin. Over the last seven years, since discovering FIRE, she and her husband had slowly paid off $200,000 in credit-card and home- and auto-loan debt. But she knew, she said, humbly dipping her head a bit, that she still had a long way to go, especially when compared with all the younger, already-retired millionaires in the room.
“Wait a second,” Frank Vasquez, one of the conference’s speakers, interrupted. “No. Do you all see this? Krista was a teenage mom who grew up in poverty. We are looking, right now, at a map of a hero’s journey.”
Jackie Cummings Koski of Dayton, Ohio, grew up on food stamps, learned about FIRE in her early 40s and retired at 49 with $1.3 million in savings.Credit...Brian Kaiser for The New York Times During a break, Jackie Cummings Koski, an Ohio local, shared her story with me: She grew up on food stamps and had a “wake-up call” with money after an acrimonious divorce left her a single mother. She learned about FIRE in her early 40s. Newly enlightened, she started saving 40 percent of the salary from her five-figure job, reached financial independence at 47 and pulled the trigger on retirement at 49, with $1.3 million in savings. “My corporate job had nothing to do with what I want to do,” Koski told me. “I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it.” She added: “While most FIRE people brag about having an old car with 200,000 miles or whatever, I drive a luxury car. But nobody’s going to chastise me, because I still retired early, even with that car, even with having made some mistakes!” Koski spends her time nowadays creating financial content and advocating for personal-finance classes to be added to high schools, and she recently wrote a “FIRE for Dummies” manual.
To my surprise, a sizable portion of the FIRE crowd at EconoMe was older. This wasn’t so surprising to Bill Yount, a 58-year-old retired physician who recently started up a podcast with Koski and another friend, Becky Heptig, that speaks to older demographics. “The average American is a late starter,” Yount told me. “That’s just who we are, living in this consumption society and not having the mentality of saving often or early.” And things are no longer “9-to-5, 40 years and a gold watch” the way they were for his parents’ generation: “I’m not in the gold-watch generation. Gen X got lost, got forgotten.”
Heptig, who is 68, found herself in dire financial straits in her 50s, when her husband’s small business faltered. “I got really scared, thinking we will never get out of this debt and we will never retire,” she says. They took a course from the financial-advice radio host Dave Ramsey, and her husband signed up for a W-2 job. After that, they started saving madly. “We were net-worth zero at 50 years old, and he retired at 63 — so for us, where we started from, we consider ourselves retiring early,” Heptig says. She had made the same wild discovery that everyone in FIRE does: that it can really take as little as a decade to hit early retirement, from the moment you learn about it and start planning. But as Yount put it to me: “You don’t know what you don’t know. You don’t even know to go looking for it.”
Maybe it’s because I know too much about looking for money that I found myself, while reporting this article, especially drawn to the subculture of FatFIRE — and to the lavish, unapologetic, in-your-face money philosophy that Allen Wong and others of his ilk prefer. FatFIRE flies in the face of all the other variants of FIRE. It is anti-anticonsumption. Its typical benchmark is to accumulate enough wealth that you can comfortably spend at least $100,000 a year in retirement, but some highfliers aim for much, much bigger sums. It espouses an unbridled maximalism, a have-it-all abundance.
While most other FIRE communities steer toward the friendly and pragmatic, FatFIRE’s adherents tend to be jaded, brusque, laser-focused. They hunt for the “exit,” in the tech-world manner of speaking: a fast, lucrative way out. On the FatFIRE subreddit, aspirants ogle severance packages, geo-arbitrage, REIT, tax loopholes, high-risk options straddles and potential business moonshots. Successful FatFIRErs applaud one another for hitting double-digit-millions net worth, debate the merits of private jets versus second homes and agonize over how large a trust fund is ethical to set up for their kids. And just as Fisker and Adeney were beacons to early-era FIRE devotees, Allen Wong is FatFIRE’s mythic hero.
Wong is quiet and unassuming in person. When I finally met him this spring — three years after we first began chatting online — near his childhood home in Queens, he wore jeans, Asics and a wary self-consciousness. Now in his mid-30s, he has comfortably enjoyed nearly a decade of leisure; he spends the bulk of his days playing pickleball and counseling strangers online on how to follow in his footsteps. He’s not particularly interested in fame, so he posts, as the senior moderator of FatFIRE, under his app company’s name. For someone who is a living talisman against the tenets of conventional living, he speaks with a surprising calm — though his eyes flashed with a certain pride whenever we talked about his childhood or his father. Even though it sprouted up only seven years ago, FatFIRE is on the verge of overtaking FIRE in size, Wong told me. Membership doubled during the pandemic despite moderators’ intentionally hiding the forum from Reddit’s homepage, he said, showing me a graph, and he added that most of its members seem to be “early-career American men.”
This makes sense. Millennials may have been ushered into the work force with the encouragement to hustle, but we soon found ourselves jerked around by utterly unaffordable housing, pandemic layoffs, salaries that flopped flat while costs went stratosphere-high. Nearly half of young adults have “money dysphoria,” according to a recent survey from the personal-finance company Credit Karma. Online, trends like “quiet luxury” and “dupe culture” glorify totems of wealth while making it clear how depressingly inaccessible that echelon is for the average Joe. If the recent “antiwork” movement laid bare the disillusionment of the young work force, then FatFIRE represents those feelings put into action.
Some FatFIRE success stories are like Wong’s: a result of obsessive entrepreneurism. Just as many are a byproduct of grinding away at a regular, albeit high-earning, job for enough years. (Fisker, for one, argues that FatFIRE is just an aesthetic rebranding of the work-smart-not-hard ethos that has been woven throughout American history.) In San Francisco, Sam Dogen faithfully saved his finance-job paychecks for 13 years before retiring in 2012 to live off passive investment income. He initially budgeted $100,000 for him and his wife to spend per year, but they upped the target to $200,000 after having their first child, then to $300,000 after a second child — and recently again to $350,000 to account for the recent bout of unchecked inflation. “We choose to live in an expensive coastal city and choose to have two children,” Dogen told me. “But you look at the $300,000 budget I made for a family of four, and you’re like, This is a pretty middle-class lifestyle. FatFIRE is almost a necessity if you want to live in San Francisco.”
“I think more people should aim for FatFIRE, because even if you don’t hit it, you’ll be at regular FIRE,” Jeff Underwood, a San Diego-based FatFIRE aspirant who started chasing financial independence after he lost his house and sank $10,000 into debt, told me. “The idea of LeanFIRE makes me super nervous. Health care costs are going up. There are all these unknowns. You could really find yourself in trouble.” Through smart tips he picked up on financial-planning forums, Underwood’s net worth steadily climbed from $0 in 2011 to $1 million in 2023. He is drawn to FatFIRE’s cheeky energy and its emphasis on securing a big safety net: “I had spent so long in the survival mind-set,” he says. “My default position is to plan for the worst, because I’ve already been through the worst.”
Wong now splits most of his time between houses in Celebration, Fla., and in New York City. He wakes up early to play pickleball and can keep at it for hours if the weather is nice. Because he has so much free time to practice, he has gotten good enough to compete against elite players and coach novices. (He offered to teach me how to play, but it was a wind-whipped 35 degrees when we met up in early April, so we went to have soup dumplings instead.) Otherwise, he reads up on tech and cybersecurity news, plays video games and undertakes home-renovation projects. His houses have been burglarized three times, although he managed to halt the latest attempt with a self-programmed alarm system. He used to make videos about his exotic car collection on YouTube, a few of which went viral, but he grew tired of being a “content creator” because it felt too much like having a job. Plus, he had already done the whole rack-up-a-huge-number thing before — with money.
“It was as if I fast-forwarded through an entire movie, and the end credits are slowly rolling,” Wong told me recently, recalling his first, restless years in retirement. “There was nothing more to watch, and all my peers were still busy watching the movie that I already finished. After I traveled the world and had done just about every possible fun thing I could possibly do, I often found myself wondering, What now?”
Life after early retirement: the elephant in the room. What to do after the cruises, the skydiving, the teetering stack of books on the night stand? The main danger of FIRE is that you might be running hard away from something rather than toward it — that you’re propelled only by the too-nebulous idea of escape. And then, even for those who lay out a clear road map for decades of nirvana, the loneliness can eat at you.
That’s why some, like Merriam, EconoMe’s organizer, host regular social events in their local cities. The online community ChooseFI maintains a sprawling network of hundreds of local FIRE groups in cities around the world. Amy Minkley, who retired by working in Asia as a teacher and saving up to $90,000 of her salary each year, organizes an annual FIRE meetup in Bali as a way of keeping up the community that saved her from depression: “It just felt like someone had thrown me a life raft, and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she told me.
A lot of other people go the Mr. Money Mustache route: They blog. Their posts about income spreadsheets and VTSAX returns then attract the like-minded, as potential friends or even lovers. Koski has heard of romances blossoming among fellow FIRErs — though many of them prefer the company of a FIRE Luddite. “A good chunk of my friends are on my phone,” Gwen Merz, who began saving up for FIRE when she discovered the Mustache blog at age 22 and reached CoastFIRE at age 32 with $400,000 in savings, told me.
A common worry is when to stop. How much is enough? Why not make more? Since there is an upper limit to money’s effect on joy — studies have shown that global happiness tops out at income levels of about $75,000 a year — chasing infinite wealth may be psychologically futile.
“I think people can accumulate money to the detriment of their health and happiness,” says Alan Donegan, who with his wife, Katie, lives a nomadic lifestyle and coaches FIRE newbies toward their resignation letters by “trying to show money is a tool to create your version of an extraordinary life.” There are also those like Oliver Truong, a 27-year-old who cares less about the dollars and cents of it all than about fulfilling a self-imposed challenge: “I think FIRE people are some of the most creative people I’ve ever met,” he told me at EconoMe. “At least for me, it was never about the money, honestly. It was more about just doing something I wanted on my own.”
For those who succeed at early retirement, especially at the FatFIRE level, a surprise depression can set in. “It’s quite alarming and sad to see how many people are lost after they do this,” Wong’s FatFIRE co-moderator, Mike Doehla, told me. Doehla himself thought he was prepared for the social segregation when he FatFIREd at 40 in 2022 through his nutrition-coaching business. He wasn’t. “It has been pretty isolating, and almost awkward at times,” he confessed. Based in a small town in upstate New York, Doehla doesn’t know anyone in real life who has retired early, and all his friends are still working. But, he told me, “I think I’m psychologically broken from ever working someone else’s schedule again,” and he is keen to discover who he is, as a person, outside of work. If the quest for happiness were a tangible metric, Doehla reckons he is about 60 percent of the way there: “I have this FOMO, this empty cup, regarding what is going around me that so many people have experienced, that I just want to taste a bit.”
At EconoMe, I met a 52-year-old architect who considers himself “FattishFIRE”; he and his wife spend about $8,000 a month in Boston and would like to keep up that lifestyle in retirement. But, he told me, “I pretend I have a lot less than I do.” He lives in a building where many of his neighbors “have very little money, live off government assistance and are critical of wealthy people. They don’t know we’re like ‘stealth wealth.’ Would they not like me anymore?” (For this reason, he asked not to be identified.) He has saved enough money to retire within two or three years if he wants to, but he worries about how he’ll be perceived within a field that takes pride in its workhorse culture: “I’d always thought ‘architect’ was my personality and was going to be until I died,” he said. “Am I being too nervous? Am I crazy? I’m still a little ashamed.”
Sam Dogen budgets $350,000 a year in expenses for his family of four: “FatFIRE is almost a necessity if you want to live in San Francisco,” he says.Credit...Maggie Shannon for The New York Times After a decade in retirement, Dogen, the San Francisco FatFIREr, recently did the unimaginable: He decided to go back to work. He doesn’t really need the money, but the endless leisure has begun to wear on him. “I can’t do pickleball all day,” Dogen told me. “So what’s the responsible thing to do? And the responsible thing to do is to find a job that has good purpose, good meaning, where you can work with some smart people and have a lot of camaraderie.” He added: “It just feels good to be part of something. I think it’s really important that we all feel like we’re part of something, contributing.” He took one gig but quit because it ate up too much time, and he is now looking for a less demanding part-time position.
Wong, these days, loves to volunteer. He donates to charities, serves on neighborhood boards and of course plays both chairman and soothsayer to the fraternity (for it is largely male) of FatFIRE. Wong doesn’t so much mind being solitary in real life — he considers himself a lone wolf and is often wary of making new friends for fear they will try to take financial advantage of him. He has been duped in the past by family members or acquaintances, including a friend who falsely claimed to need support for lifesaving heart surgeries. It’s not uncommon for him to get Venmo requests from strangers. (Many of his pickleball acquaintances learned about his wealth when a photographer showed up on the court to shoot him for this article.)
I asked him what he plans to do in his second decade of retirement — or his third or fourth or beyond. He doesn’t know yet. He told me he has been intrigued by the rise of A.I. and has flirted with the idea of a D.I.Y. project in that space. Ultimately, though, he hasn’t pursued it. He fears even self-employment would bring back the manic stresses he fought so hard to leave behind. “When I FatFIREd, I freed myself,” Wong told me. Inner peace, then, is the precious goal. He treasures all the time he has been able to spend with his mother and may one day share his wealth with children of his own. “Should I have worked more and made even more money? I’ve definitely left many millions of dollars on the table by stepping away from it all,” he told me. “But I always end up coming to the same conclusion: There’s no point in making so much money if you’re not going to be happy. I’d rather be free.”

2024.05.07 20:51 2slo4u8264 A dog bit my wife! Owners refuse to give information.

Good day all,
A few months ago my pregnant wife was taking our 6 month old son out for a walk in our wagon and our neighbor(who lives in a trailer on her ex husbands property) let her 5 dogs out. Two of them ran towards my wife and child and as my wife stepped in front of the wagon and turned her back to the dogs to cover our son, she was bit. She only saw as the dogs were circling her. The owner of the dogs yelled for them to come back and they may have (my wife back was towards the dogs and the home they came out of still) but she saw the dogs sort of run back but the other dogs came and circled her too. Another neighbor thought it was their dog barking so they came out to see what happened and saw the dogs circling her. In total, the dog(s) bit my wife 2 times causing deep wounds and teeth scratches on her upper thigh.
She was helped up the driveway by the other neighbor who thought it was their dog and she called me right away. I told her to call the police and animal control right away which she did and we have reports on both. The dog owners came over to see if my wife was ok as well and my wife told her that she'd have to go to the ER because of the extent of the wound and because she was pregnant.
We did go to the ER and because my wife was pregnant, they could only clean the wound with warm water and soap as the things they normally use may be too strong for the baby. I'm no medical professional, my wife is a nurse, so whatever her and the team of nurses said, I just went with it. She was definitely in a lot of pain as they squirted the water into the wound though. An x ray was also done just to make sure no teeth were in the wound.
Fast forward to today and the wounds are now keloids.
We reached out to an attorney who wrote 2 letters asking for the homeowner to give their home owners insurance but no reply was ever given. Because they are one of the attorneys that don't get paid till you win, they dropped the case. We were referred to another attorney who also doesn't get paid till we win ( I am now assuming they only will go so far so they can focus on easier cases?) by a friend and this attorney is actually doing more such as hiring a private investigator. While I'm thankful, I know the cost will be high on our end and if the PI finds nothing, I'm afraid we'll be out the cost of the PI and our case will be dropped again.
Any advice? How could we find out their homeowners insurance if the owners won't give up that information? It's like they are refusing to take responsibility for what their dogs did. The fine that the animal control gave them does nothing for the pain my wife had to go through. As any women who's been pregnant before knows, you could only sleep on your side and when one side (dog bite side) can't be slept on, it just puts so much pressure on the other side so she could only sleep on one side for the next few months that she was pregnant.
Thank you for reading my long essay but I'd appreciate any information or thoughts you may have.

2024.05.07 20:22 ntin Best In Faction Winner's Thoughts on Slaanesh Daemons in 10th

Allow me to establish my Slaanesh credentials. I've won the Best in Faction Slaanesh trophy twice (and possibly more, if not for the unfortunate circumstances of COVID-19). Since the inception of 40k 8th edition, I've dedicated my gaming to competitive Slaanesh Daemons. I've likely played more games with Slaanesh daemons than anyone else. These are my beloved yet disturbing crab babies; they are my passion in 40k.
The purpose of this post is to give constructive criticism with my insight and experience in case anyone from GW is lurking. I was disappointed that Chaos Daemons didn’t receive any adjustments in the last round of point adjustments as the Index is just suffering from high points and stale list designs. The Chaos Daemons Index can have list builds other than Monster Mash, but the current point values hold back other archetypes.

Chaos Daemon Point Values

I do not want to harp on this point, but Chaos Daemons are mostly overcosted, which I don’t think is a controversial statement. I think Chaos Daemons should be cheaper broadly, but I don’t think throwing out specific point values is helpful, as these factions don’t live in their bubble but in a larger ecosystem.

Unit Reviews

Contorted Epitome

Recommendation: The Contorted Epitome needs a redo. This unit, which was previously a rock star, has fallen from grace.

Daemonettes

Recommendation: Increase Slashing Claws to A4.

Exalted Seeker Chariot

Recommendation: Take a page from AoS and combine a Seeker Chariot and Hellflayer to make an Exalted Seeker Chariot.

Fiends

Recommendations: Drop the weird exclusion on “Sophoric Musk”

Hellflayer

Recommendations: Nothing wrong with the actual unit, but it is priced out from competitive play.

Infernal Enrapturess

Recommendations: Discordant Disruption aura range increase. It is too small to be impactful for how niche it is.

Keeper of Secrets

Recommendations: Adjust the Witstealer Sword or Snapping Claws for better high-toughness options.

Seeker Chariot

Recommendation: It is “fine” just underwhelming for the points.

Seekers

Recommendation: Change “Unholy Speed” to “Advance and Charge” or “Fallback and Charge”

Shalaxi Helbane

Recommendation: Perfect, no comments.

Syll’esske

Recommendations: Melee weapons could use another pass. Axe of Dominion at WS 3+ S7 is meh for an expensive character. The Scourging Whip is also unimpressive.

The Masque of Slaanesh

Recommendations: The Masque is fine.

Tormentbringer on Exalted Seeker Chariot

Recommendations: Ravaging Claw WS should be 2+ like the other Heralds.

Tranceweaver

Recommendation: Like the Contorted Epitome, this just needs a redo.

The Lost Units

Tormentbringer on Seeker Chariot and Tormentbringer on Hellflaye are missing in 40k 10th edition. They don’t have an Index card and aren’t in the Chaos Daemons Legends document.

Some Random Index Chaos Daemon Thoughts

Battleline Unit Sizes

It would be a considerable glow-up if Battleline units (Daemonettes, Bloodletters, Horrors, and Plaguebearers) were unit sizes 5-10, giving cheaper objective holders and action monkies. Weirdly, Space Marines have cheaper Battleline objective holders than Chaos Daemons outside of Nurglings.

Herald Names

The Slaanesh Heralds have different names between the Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40k. It would be nice if we could pick a set of names and stick with them to make it less confusing. Neither game's names are great, though Trancweaver vs Viceleader, for example for the foot herald. A Chaos name generator could give better names like Sintaster, Pleasurebringer, etc.

Monster Strength

I don’t understand why MONSTER melee attack strength values are worse than melee VEHICLE attacks. Why is this a design choice GW is so dedicated to sticking with? It would also be nice to have a core MONSTER stratagem since they are excluded from using TANK SHOCK. Why are these 30-foot-tall supernatural Greater Daemons struggling in an arm wrestling contest with a Space Marine with a powerfist?

Daemon Saves

If GW wants to elevate Chaos Daemons to elite unit status, they must interact more with the terrain. Just bumping to an Sv 5+ will help against mass-fire AP- while on the cover. It is crazy that even the Aeldari Daemons are 2+/4++ now, and Greater Daemons are Sv 5+/4++ in a world of LETHAL HITS.

Chaos Daemon Hyperspecialization

Similar to Drukhari, Chaos Daemons are several mini factions lumped together. I get the design direction of 10th, which is trying to simplify faction rules, but I think each god needs their CORE ability to tie each god's sub-faction together. In particular, there are so many overlapping units between Khorne and Slaanesh, and having sub-faction CORE abilities could help differentiate units.
It seems likely that there will be six Chaos Daemon Codex detachments, one for each Chaos God, Be’lakor, and Undivided. I still would like to see something like, for example, Slaanesh Daemons generically get “Advance and Charge” and then the Slaanesh Daemon detachment also grants “Fight First”. If you want to play mixed Chaos Daemons, Slaanesh is your mobility unit. If you want to go all in on mono Slaanesh Chaos Daemons, they additionally become tricky fight phase units.

The Daemonettes on X Problem

More so than other Chaos Daemons, Slaanesh Daemons suffer from nearly all units, except Fiends and Greater Daemons are just a variation of Daemonettes armed with the same weapon. With some creative abilities and minor variations of melee weapons, there is room to make unique units.
Unfortunately, the Herald claws are identical to Daemonette claws but WS 2+, except for the Tormentbringer on Exalted Chariot, who is WS 3+ despite having the Herald claws.
Adding some weapon variety adds a lot to these weapons. Make the Heralds +1S +1D. Give the unit champions the same Herald claw to make them stand out. Give the chariot claws an extra AP. Give the Seeker claws LANCE. It adds flavor to the units and gives them extra utility in a limited unit count faction.

2024.05.07 17:20 Sharronrock Tabitha, here are your choices!

1) Get a job & learn to take care of yourself. If you can’t even complete your Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), then #2 is your best option.
2) You need help, BUT NOT FROM TIKTOK! You need to be in a psych ward so you can be properly diagnosed & treated for your disorders. THEN, you need to be in a reputable Halfway House.
You have plenty who care about you! They are just tired of financing this Road of Destruction that you insist is your only choice. I also think if you go down the right road, then you will find appropriate help along the way.
—————————
My husband passed five years ago. We fell in love @14 & 15 years old & then we married @18 & 19. I had five surgeries starting in Jan 2018 & they went on until June 2018. Was supposed to have one more, but he started to not feel well. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in Sept 2018. We watched him dwindling away until he was about 100 lbs. He died three months later, Dec 20, 2018.
The love of my life, my very best friend & the sole bread winner was gone. I had to figure out the finances, etc. Then May 15, 2019, I took a nasty fall & was doctor ordered to stay in the bed six months. That really played on this new widow’s mind. Then in October 2019, my baby brother was found dead in bed. He had been laying there nine days. Then 2020 & the epidemic.
That’s a lot to deal with. We had bought a brand new travel trailer. I had to turn that & his truck back to the finance company. We loved going out & being in that trailer. Handing his truck keys over was particularly painful.
My point is bad things happen. My spine is deteriorating from multiple things. I can do about five minutes of housework & the pain gets so bad that I have to stop. Through all of this I have learned I still AM capable of doing life on my own. Technically I am not alone, God has been with me every step.
Not once did I ask the Internet to figure anything out for me. It was God & me! As hard as these five years have been, I now know God figures it out & I listen and follow HIS lead. He loves me & will take care of me. Now, I have to do the leg work. There is no manna from Heaven that appears at my door. But I’ve eaten every day, my house is paid off & so is my car. THAT is how God works things out.
Please listen!

2024.05.07 16:45 Inhalationofnewtion 2nd shot with a Friend but it seems to be going the same way as it did before. One way Friendship.

This is long... This is very long.
I'm married, two children, my Wife is awesome. We live in a small community in a wooded/rural area. It's not Donner Pass but we are out in the boonies. We have to be somewhat able and self sufficient. It's not off grid prepper stuff but we have to be able to do more ourselves than if we lived in town.
A few years back, my Wifes Friend and I guess you'd call him a friendly acquaintance of mine moved up on the mountain. Let's call him Frank. The guy has issues, as do we all, but he's functional, intelligent, and quite handy. A decent guy to know to help get things done.
When he moved in, the property he bought was a disaster. Previous owner used to get all manner of Amazon returns and stockpile the stuff. Also anything else he could drag home for free or dirt cheap. All kinds of crap everywhere with zero organization. A couple of giant burn piles where of course he's burning just whatever, a pickup truck bed camper in disrepair full of stuff, ratty tarps and tents covering more crap. Squalor and chaos.
The property does have a functional well and **some** kind of septic system and there's power run to it. There's a small building attached to a camper but with some work it can be made liveable. So we sort of have the bare essentials covered. We just have a ton of work to do.
So I'm excited, my Wife is excited, Frank is excited as well. We all figure let's get Frank set up. Running water, working toilet, sink, wood/coal stove, major cleanup on the property, a water heater, washing machine, a shower or even a bath tub would be real nice as well. Basic stuff so he can do for himself because at this point he's showering and doing laundry and eating supper all at our house. I figure if I'm in a spot, I could go up there and have a shower or do laundry you know?
We get to work. First we have to finish even moving the guy in so he can be rid of the trailer he's renting in a trailer park. Turns out the guy is a hoarder and it's heavy. The guy has more stuff packed into his trailer then we actually know what to do with. At least it's nothing disgusting and most of it I can see at least some value in it. I can see why he'd keep hold of things like this but Man there's a LOT!!! I don't know how he can even store all this stuff so I figured let's make this easy and I bought him a 40' shipping container and had it delivered to his place. We get it there and we assemble storage racks that were left on the property by the previous owner inside the shipping container. I'm not rich but at this point I don't terribly miss the money and I figure helping this dude out will benefit me and my Family. Within two weeks, Frank is out of his trailer and everything he owns is jammed into the shipping container. It's tight but it's somewhat organized at least.
Now! Let's get to work! And we do. We start clearing out some of the actual trash. Say 15 hours and we can notice that we made a dent. Another 15 hours, it still kind of looks for shit but we can at least make sense of the place now. We're really doing something here! It's heavy and dirty and disgusting but we're having a lot of fun with it and feeling pretty good. As we're going, we find some actual decent things in the piles that the previous owner left behind and we're trying to not waste anything because we're not rich and we might need the stuff.
It gets to a point where it's starting to become really dirty work and even a garden hose would be pretty dang amazing just to at least wash up a little bit because we really don't know what's in some of these piles but Man we're digging deep into them! My Wife goes through the nonsense of getting his power turned on. Frank has enough money saved to get it turned on and to keep it going a while.
Ok, we got power and we can make some water happen now. We scrounged up a shitter and a sink, bought some PVC and got that happening. Now we can wash up and we don't have to crap in the woods anymore. We also found a decent Harmann wood/coal burner and installed that. Nothing ideal but we're looking pretty damn good compared to when we started. The stove was free. The previous owner switched to pellets and had no use for it. We had to get it out and move it of course but nothing we can't handle.
So now it's getting to at least 40 hours at Franks place, maybe 60 hours. I wasn't really keeping track. The place still looks like hell but we're making steady progress and it's more or less "liveable". Meanwhile there are things piling up at my own house. The roof needs a little attention, some work on my backhoe, vehicle repairs and maintenance. Normal everyday stuff that got put to the back burner for a while as we set this guy up but it's starting to pile up and I have to get this shit done.
"Hey Frank, you mind coming down a little while and pitching in with this or that?"
At first, yea he makes his way down and helps out. Not at the crack of dawn, say 11 AM or so. Fine and dandy. This isn't pay work and I don't start early myself, nor do I go very long and hard on these tasks. Put in a couple hours until I feel like I accomplished something and call it a day. I don't think I'm asking much.
After a bit though, he's showing up later and later. If Frank says 12-ish, it means like 2PM or something. One day I have to remove the backhoe from my tractor in order to replace some hydraulic lines. This assembly weighs about 4 tons. It's on a 1967 Case 580 CK. Not the biggest thing but it's no joke. Frank is skilled with cranes and forklifts and other heavy stuff and I figure he could just come down and help me make damn sure this thing is going to be stable. I'm going to have the hydraulics opened up and if it's not properly supported it could move on me and that might well be it for me.
So the day comes. I have my tractor in the driveway and I have the backhoe dismounted from the tractor but still hooked to the hydraulics by around 10-11AM. Now I'm sitting and waiting on Frank. Finally about 1AM he rolls in. The first thing he does is to sit down and use my blowtorch to clean out his one hitter so he can do a little wake and bake. I've been ready and waiting for a couple hours and now the dude is going to sit and get high before we're going to work with some heavy shit and he's burning my propane to do so. Yea I'm kind of annoyed and I let him know. I tried to not be too much of an asshole but I wasn't pleasant about it. I didn't yell or anything but I'm sure I came off kind of asshole-ish.
He finishes up with the one hitter, takes a few wacks off it, says he's go tot go home and crap. Lovely... He's been lighting up my toilet for a while now, what's the big deal? Anyhow he heads back home. I'm sitting there for an hour or so scratching my ass, screw it I'll figure it out. I'm scared as hell but I manage to get my lines replaced. I bring the tractor into position and get the bottom mounting pins locked in. There are two more up top of the backhoe assembly and then it's solidly mounted. I screwed up by not hooking the hydraulic lines from the tractor to the backhoe and doesn't the damn thing just sort of drop right to the ground because the boom, bucket, and dipper arm are open. I took precautions against this but I guess I didn't do very well. I didn't lose the whole show but it scared the hell out of me and I shut the tractor down and walked away for a while. It was a split second and if I was under it I'd either have been dead or wishing for it. I calmed myself down after a while and finished the job. Frank never showed back up that day.
After I got done, I was sitting there a while. After that dopamine hit from getting the job done wore off I was starting to feel pretty let down and pissed off. My Wife and I put real time, and heart and soul in up at Franks place. We'd get up there about 9AM-10AM and get to it. Half the time, Frank would be hungover and it would literally be 2-3 hours until he was any kind of mobile. We're up there at his place trying to get shit done so he has a setup and he's dragging his ass because he was up until 3AM the previous night getting shitfaced.
The plan was, after he was set, we'd get into some nonsense. Cleanouts from tenants that left an apartment full of stuff, scrapping, maybe some lawn work, plowing snow on the mountain here, whatever. Not getting rich but at least paying the bills and having a laugh. At first, Frank is all about it. The cleanouts were his idea. I never knew you actually could get some decent pay for this type of thing. After a while though Frank starts throwing up roadblocks about we need to be an LLC and have a few fairly new looking trucks before we can start when I'm watching something like "Randys Hauling" on the side of a beat up old truck going up and down the mountain and he's getting that pay. On OUR mountain and we could be easily doing this right now! He kept throwing these obstacles up on all sorts of projects. It felt like Frank was deliberately throwing wrenches wherever he could in order to halt any progress.
Eventually I tried talking with him. I told him "I'm not really feeling the return on this investment.". and Frank says "I'm sorry you feel that way.". It kind of went to shit from there. I got to the point where I didn't want anything more to do with him. I was a door mat for a long time in my childhood and it felt like I was getting played for a stooge yet again. It felt like he was also taking advantage of my Wife. But hey, she's been Friends with him for quite a while. In fact she was Friends with him before we were even dating. I'm not going to tell her she can't hang out with the guy. You'll just have to take my word that she's not the type to play around when she's in a committed relationship. Not sure if I have much faith in Frank but I have faith in my Wife.
Frank is no longer coming to the house, there are arguments between my Wife and I about the guy. All I can see is that she's getting played by the guy. Eventually, Frank has a Friend who offers him to go to a blues concert because Franks Friend has noone to go with but has an extra ticket. This is a weekend thing where you camp and party and listen to performers. My Wife is already running ragged here there and everywhere. Frank asks my Wife to keep an eye on his dogs while he's away and of course she wants to help out. She's just like that. One day, turns out my Wife is too busy to take care of it and my Daughter has to go check on the dogs. My Daughter can't find the keys to get inside Franks camper. Now don't you know I have to go up there and take on this guys responsibilities while he's out at a concert partying his ass off. I put my foot down because at this point the guy is messing with the entire Family and holding all of us up. I told my Wife that WE are done with him and shit hit the fan for a while but eventually she started to see shit for herself and we all just cut off from the guy.
This is breaking my heart. I really do love the guy and I know it's killing my Wife to cut off from a Friend. But it's a one way Friendship. Frank will jump for someone he really cares about, but us, we're just useful or so it seems to me.
3 years go by. My Wife still talks with Frank via text and I'm not thrilled with it but I'm not going to push it either. Whatever it's not holding up our show. Time goes by... I simmer down, Frank calms down. I do indeed miss the guy but I'm afraid that if I start talking it'll end up being the same crap all over again. He was good to work with when he felt like it. I work on cars all the time and this guy can look at things and see things that I don't. He's no kind of mechanic but he's already schooled me under the hood as well as setting up a guys garage door that was horribly installed.
In time, yes we do start talking again. I try to make it very clear that if we're going to do anything, we BOTH have to feel properly compensated for our efforts. Be that money, labor swapping, horse trading, whatever. If I do something for Frank and it takes an hour, Frank gets me back satisfactorily and vice versa. This has to be worth it for both of us and all of us.
Well, it happens that Frank finally decides he wants to clean up his property. His truck is not registered, insured, or inspected. His drivers license is expired. There's a lot of scrap up there. I have a road legal truck and I make a proposition. I'll pile scrap on the truck until I feel it's a decent load, he and my Wife will run the load. My wife is a capable driver. She and frank will unload the truck at the scrapyard and meanwhile I'll break the scrap down at his place and have another load ready to go. At the end of the day, the truck gets paid $1 per mile and the tank gets filled for the next day. We split the remainder 3 ways equally. We clean the property up, we all get a few dollars and after a little while he can save the money to get his own truck back on the road.
Frank says there's not enough money in scrapping. There won't be anything left to split after gassing up the truck... Sounds familiar... Ok, how about this then. Let me make a load of absolute BS scrap like old bedsprings, tin cans, and just whatever crap I can, we see how that pays and maybe go from there.
Frank says Hem and Haw, well maybe if it's just Frank and my Wife loading up the truck and they also run and unload the truck he might be in to it. Splitting it 3 ways and with the truck just isn't going to cut it. Now I'm getting confused and a little irritated because I thought the idea was to clean up, not get paid. My Wife also has a screwy elbow and if she goes hard on a job she's in pain the next day. Nope this aint happening. Let's put a pin in this and come back to it. I'm not going to push anymore and my Wife is definitely not into chucking scrap on to the truck as well as off loading it. If he wants to do something and he comes to us, we'll figure it out. If he wants to sit on that scrap, hell with it. I guess this is the Hoarder in his brain talking.
My Wife has a 1896 VW Jetta diesel. It's old and it's been around but it can be made decent. The interior is shit but we have a parts car and a pile of interior parts like carpet and trim, dashboard, and just everything you want to make the inside actually pretty good looking. She's the one that heads up the interior work. I personally hate it. At this point, Frank has no power at his place and he has a little 80cc dirtbike he'd like to use to get up and down the mountain. Private dirt road so we can drive ATV's or golf carts or whatever and it'd be handy.
I have a 300 watt solar panel that I'm not going to use and all the gear to go with it. I have some parts I can use to get his dirtbike going and I know how to get most old carburetted stuff running when it's been sitting a while. We come to an agreement. Frank will be down here working on this Jetta with my Wife until the interior is as good as we can make it. I'll give him the solar panel, help him install it at his place, and get his dirtbike going for him. Also my Wife will handle getting his power back on and a couple of other administrative things. Everyone is feeling OK with it.
We begin. My Wife and I put the first foot forward. We take the solar gear up to his place and get it working. Now at least he can charge his phone and keep a light running. Nothing major but it's something and it's damn handy. I start on the dirtbike. It's a Suzuki 80cc four stroke. The fuel tank is cracked up and leaking like a sieve. I have a tank from an old Honda CR80 and it takes me a while but I get it mounted to the bike and I didn't even have to chop the bike or the tank. The carb on this thing was sitting with fuel in it for years and it's beyond hope. Normally I can open them up and blow the jets with compressed air, maybe carb cleaner and some wires but this thing is completely jammed solid with crap and I can't get it. I have a carb on my shelf and it's actually for that exact engine. So after 6-8 hours of scratching my head and wrenching, I have his bike running just as good as ever and it holds fuel.
Now it's Franks turn. The first day, he actually shows up at a decent hour and the guy is putting his time in. They have the interior all but gutted. Seats, carpet, interior trim(what's left of it) HVAC. Just the dash is left and it's been a good 5 hours so they call it a day. Next day he's right there say 9-10AM. Dang this is working! They're going after removing the cracked up dashboard and something isn't making sense. It seems loose but it's not coming out. I'm out there putzing with my truck and my Wife asks me to come take a look. I get under the dash and I'm looking but I'm damned if I can find what's holding it up. It can wiggle but it's not coming loose. I notice some steel brackets with rivets under the dash just at the bottom of the windshield. All I can think is to cut the rivets loose and the dash will come out but it doesn't make sense because you're not going to get new rivets in when you install the new dash. There's barely room to get a chisel in to cut them loose. Frank figures it out. Frank goes out under the cowl under the hood, pulls up the drip tray and right there are two nuts on studs poking through the firewall. We pull those nuts off and presto the dash is loose! God Damn Frank you're a rock star! I'm SO glad the guy was here! Different perspective? Savant? I don't know but the guy nailed it!
Next day. Again Frank shows up about 10AM and the Jetta is coming around. The carpet is in and looking nice, the trim is installed, The seats are cleaned up and installed. This thing is actually starting to look pretty good! That was a good day. 4-5 hours and they call it. Nice job guys! Looking good!
Next day. Time to install HVAC. We did an AC delete. The Jetta was originally an AC car but most of the gear was gone. The parts car was non-AC and the heater box is much smaller, lighter, and simpler. We clean that up, do a little bit of swapping on wiring harnesses and we install it. Frank isn't here yet and it's about noon. My Wife texts him to see what's up.
Well this girl showed up about midnight last night and the way I gather they were up until the wee hours drinking and boning so he's not into working today. He doesn't know this girl from a hill of beans and about the only thing he DOES know is that she's a real easy piece of ass, I guess pretty cute, and mentally a wreck. Well... Yea I've been hard up myself so I'm trying to be understanding here. If a cute and willing young lady showed up at my place and I was lonely I think I'd take that opportunity as well. He did put some good time in on this vehicle and really saved the day when pulling the dash out. I went to work with my Wife. We got the replacement dash in, Heater installed. Everything assembled, wires routed, job done. The thing looks damn near new on the inside. It was a good 8 hours and I still feel it to day as this was just yesterday and I'm no youngster. My Wife is in pain. I just feel tired.
I can see Franks side, but a deal is a deal. I was trying to talk to my Wife that "We're kind of even right? He put in his time, he really helped out a ton. Neither owes either and we're pretty squared up right?". I wasn't really feeling that but I was willing to be convinced and sort of let it slide. My Wife however doesn't feel that we're square at all. Not only the motorcycle and the solar crap, but she spent hours on the phone and computer and Frank agreed that he'd be there from start to finish on this interior. On the last day, he ditched us because he was busy screwing and drinking with some random chick. While we were finishing up the job, Frank texted my Wife asking if He and this girl could come down to meet and greet. Or would we like to come up and have a fire? My Wife and I are dead tired, it's about 5PM. We normally have supper on the table at this time but we're close and we want to get through it. We're not into entertaining tonight. We want to finish up, get supper, get the kids to bed and crash. We're sure as hell not going up to the junk heap and sitting there at a fire watching these two make out and get tanked up. She texted him something like that. Tired, still working, still have to make supper, not happening.
That's it. If you made it through all that I admire your perseverance and I hope it at least makes sense. This is just my side of course. I have my own issues. I can be an asshole, impatient, I'm kind of obnoxious. I'm trying to work on that stuff and my Wife tells me I'm really reigning it in when I get pissed if something is fighting me. Anymore I'll just walk away and have a smoke or something. I guess I can get sort of pushy when I see shit that needs doing. I want to help but I guess I'm aggressive or too Gung Ho about it.
Anyways, it feels like this relationship with Frank is going to end up the same place as it left off before. All I can think to do is just not really seek him out anymore. If he happens to need something... I don't know... My Wife and my Children and myself are a team. We've got enough going on and we don't need someone dragging us down. I don't want this to get to the point where it did before. I feel like I screwed up even letting this guy back into my life and I'm kind of stressing.

2024.05.07 15:48 Yolsy01 I have only 2 concerns about this movie

This is a bit of a novel - this is your warning lol TLDR summary is at the end 😆
I've been mostly the optimist about this movie because I believe all the elements are truly in place for it to be great. I will be genuinely shocked if it's horrible.
HOWEVER, outside of the make up and looks, I think the most concerning things are the script and marketing. That said, I'm not THAT concerned, I'm just offering up a topic of discussion lol
There is a lot to cover with mj's life, we all know this. It's a great sign that the movie will have a long runtime. However, I'm beginning to realize this movie will be THE "source of truth" (whether that is fair or not) for almost everyone. When people in general say facts they learned about MJ, it'll be attributed to the biopic very likely. Just like The Jacksons An American Dream did (and continues to do), people have an idea of the childhood MJ had because of that movie. So I'm concerned that in an effort to get artsy and cover so much ground, liberties might be taken in some spots.
For instance, I don't want to see this dramatic build up of MJ "popping pills" in random moments, for no apparent reason, to foreshadow his death (it was my only complaint about MJ The Musical lol). IMO, that isn't the correct categorization of what happened and I think it's lazy to rope MJ in as "just another music star fiending for drugs." I really want them to go into the pain of the Pepsi burn, the painful medical treatments, the ongoing procedures and complications, the doctors involvement. I would love for them to really explore the ecosystem around MJ that led to what eventually happened (something that unfortunately happens to many people, not just celebrities - this dependence on pain meds due to legit physical medical issues).
I don't just want another regurgitation of "well MJ hated how he looked so it's up to interpretation why you think he changed so much." No. Let's go into that vitiligo diagnosis. The lupus diagnoses and the complications around that. Let's go into ALL the factors and how difficult it was back then to be a star with those issues.
I want people to leave the theater thinking MJs life was complicated, because it was, and whatever opinions they had or boxes they put MJ in were legitimately challenged.
The other thing is the marketing. I noticed when people talk about this possibly being the best biopic, they bring it up with titles like Rocket Man, Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis. That made me realize that no one is talking about the Bob Marley movie. And didnt they do a Whitney Houston biopic?
The criticisms for both seem to be that they were both formulaic, that they were great for people who love the music but as far as everything else, it seemed hollow. I personally haven't seen all of these biopics except Bohemian Rhapsody, and while I did enjoy it - something about it felt above the surface. Too clean. One thing that makes The Jacksons An American Dream stand out against ALL the latest biopics, to me, is that everything about that movie seemed very intimate. You were inside that small house in gary WITH them. Not watching from a distance or watching a reenactment. I hope the mj biopic draws inspiration from that.
But back to the hollowness - imo, that came through in the marketing of the Bob Marley pic. I came across this comment that explains it perfectly: https://www.reddit.com/entertainment/s/zAczu0COwH
I don't know a lot about Bob Marley's life, but when I saw the trailers, it felt gimmicky to me. It's not like the actor didn't resemble Marley, but the colors felt very SATURATED and the look felt curated and every hair was in its place lol it didn't feel real.
So ALL this to say, in my humble opinion, jafaar looks great - everything looks promising but i hope there's emphasis on nuance (as much as possible) and realism. But what do you all think?
TLDR: outside of getting the looks right, a bigger concern might be about the substance of the movie. Does it FEEL real and not formulaic? Will people leave the theater having a deeper understanding of mj or just a shallow summary of his life with awesome performances peppered in (especially given that this will be the new "source of truth" for most people when it comes to mj)?
