Such companies had to wait for the emergence of an unfortunate or adverse event to embrace the work from home model. However, not many organizations managed to adapt, but those that adapted stayed afloat even as many others failed and were eventually forced to permanently close their businesses (Harel 93). A key characteristic of the firms that survived through the COVID-19 period is embracing digital transformation, and such firms are still on course with this paradigm and are using it as a guide into the future (Priyono et al. 104). Digital transformation has continued to play a key role pre, during, and post the pandemic period to ensure that businesses achieve a competitive technological advantage.
Aside from the pandemic, generally, firms need to find new ways of working. According to Gartner, efficiency and time are very important in the modern-day workplace. The importance of these two elements is informed by the fact that the workplace and the marketplace are very competitive- with hyper-competition rife between rival brands and firms. Therefore, products need to be developed in record time, and they must be delivered to the market ahead of competitors. Furthermore, customers’ demands can best be served when the company aligns its production processes with customers’ needs (Kumar et al. 163). Additionally, companies specializing in service provision can also benefit from going digital. Doing this would position them to address the needs of a portion of its customers who are digital natives.
We habitually look upon on renegades and rebels as a menace, NASA’s Johnson Space Center, however, suggests that high performing teams need renegades more than we think. Far from troublesome, they can be a commanding force of shifting organizations towards new futures.
Fusion teams can help future-focused teams serve their current and future customers better. According to Galli and Paola (69), fusion teams, just like pirates on a ship, often operate guided by agile culture. There is increased flexibility in the agile culture environment, which empowers employees to adapt to different changes in their working environment. The agility with which employees in fusion teams work is similar to the agile culture aboard a pirate ship. The crew has to change their way of operations depending on the different circumstances they encounter at sea. Agile practices are important as they tear down the bureaucratic practices that hinder workforce from responding to changes in their environments. Some marketplace and workplace changes are more important than any other culture, especially a bureaucratic culture, which would not allow stakeholders to respond fast enough (Rey 77). Consequently, organizations that fail to embrace agile culture will miss out on the opportunities provided by rapid changes in their operating environments.
The agile culture where fusion teams thrive is also an ideal environment for modern-day employees. Unlike traditional employees who thrived in bureaucratic workplaces, the modern-day employee thrives more in environments that promote greater opportunities to team members. Fusion teams do not have formal reporting structure and they come across quite fluid. Team leaders and team members alike could report to either to dedicated IT departments or business areas outside. Fusion teams are often incumbated within Agile project or scrum teams and progressively adopt product management discipline to manage a capability end-to-end, from strategy development to delivery and continuous improvements.
Fusion teams will continue to contribute positively towards business and organizational success. Such teams operate in ways that are distinct from those of traditional teams. For example, fusion teams encourage employees to innovate while providing them with the space and resources needed. Additionally, employees are allowed to collaborate with their colleagues across departments, making it possible for both tacit and explicit knowledge to flow with ease both horizontally and vertically in an organization. Fusion teams will address the many challenges that employees in traditional teams face. These challenges are the bottleneck of bureaucratic structures that stifle innovation and delay the overall innovation process. By addressing such challenges, fusion teams will ensure that businesses innovate faster and succeed in bringing innovative products to the market before their competitors. Since fusion teams are agile and offer employees a high level of autonomy, it is expected that organizations that embrace them will experience higher employee retention than organizations that stick to traditional teams.

Every basketball fan/enthusiast has certainly come across some variation of this chart/image, most often published by Kirk Goldsberry. I first saw his charts back in 2018-ish and that got me involved with the world of basketball analytics. I’ve noticed he posts a variation of this chart quite often, at least once a season (no really, 19-20, 21-22, 21-22 again, and 22-23). They always blow up and have a shitload of engagement, reach, and other social media metrics so I kind of do understand why he is posting this constantly.
What I want to try to do is dive in as to why and how the game has changed the way it did. I’m not the first one doing this deep dive, and I think some people have done it a lot better than me (links in the end!), but this topic is dear to me and I want to tackle it here using the play-by-play and shot data that we have at our disposal.

The Basics

The basics of the change are simple, the teams started to figure out the well-known “knowledge” that 3 > 2, so they began to funnel all those mid-range shots toward the 3-point line. But I think a better way to grasp that would be to put it out on the court.
Each bin on the chart is represented with a color spanning from white to brownish color where white represents the lower value, of 0.7 points per shot or less, while brown color is around 1.3 or more - I capped the values at 0.7 at 1.3 → restricted area certainly has some bins over 1.3 for example.
Restricted area and corners are the places to be and shoot from, while above-the-break 3-pointers are next in order their shade of brown is generally close to 1.1 points per shot which is a lot better than the bleak white color that spans across the entire mid-range and outside of the paint. Even those elbows that were the targets of many curl and floppy actions are just average at best.
If we switch a flip in our mind and observe colors as the frequency of shots - we would then pretty much get a modern-day distribution of shots on the court and even the chart at the right side from the start of the text. So this chart alone already gives hints as to why basketball has changed.

How did the game change?

Now that we understand the basics and the foundation of why the game has changed, we can go into the tidbits of how it changed. We can examine the details of shot data to try and find the reasons behind the disappearance of baseline and elbow shots (spoiler alert - shot data alone won’t be enough).
Let’s start by observing which player positions changed their distribution the most.
The thing that bothers people the most nowadays is that everyone plays the same style of basketball, only shooting threes and diving into the paint. Well, the right-hand charts would confirm that thinking, I would disagree with it though, because, on a deeper level of basketball analysis, there is a huge difference in how, for example, Sixers and Nuggets set up Embiid/Jokić in their favorite situations.
Because of that thinking - people also often mention that basketball got boring. I agree with the statement, in a way. That is because there is no more random shit happening during the game. If Nenê Hilario played in today’s basketball you wouldn’t see him randomly taking up a baseline jumper as he did back in 2003-04 when playing for Denver.
When things get efficient, they get boring.

Big Men Increased the Range - How the Big Men position got “Brook Lopezed”

Centers and forwards have seen the biggest increase in a total increase of 3-point rate (20% more 3-pointers today than in 2003-04) - and that’s where the overall influx of 3-pointers is most seen.
Rasheed Wallace, Rashard Lewis, Al Harrington, Channing Frye, and Ryan Anderson have all started paving the way towards spacing the floor back in the late 2000s and early 2010s just for Kevin Love and especially Brook Lopez to change the way centers play the game completely. Lopez was an amazing traditional big man, playing in the low post, scoring through a variety of post moves, and crashing the boards - all that earned him an all-star spot on the Nets. Then one year Lopez just decided to start shooting 3-pointers and making them at an extremely efficient rate.
And exactly those types of players (Brook, Myles Turner, Chet Holmgren, Jaren Jackson Jr., etc...) are one of the main reasons for achieving great spacing.

No Posting Up

By moving the centers outside of the 3-point line, you automatically have a lot fewer post-ups, which were frankly mostly unnecessary and forced poor shots. We don’t have to (and can’t actually) go back to 2003-04 to check the difference between post-ups through the numbers. But we can notice that huge difference even when we compare the current number of post-ups with the 2015-16 season - the first available year of post-up data from nba.com.
Back then, the median number of post-up possessions per game stood at 7.6, nowadays the maximum is 8.6. But the post-ups in today’s game have become a super efficient setup with 10 teams performing 1 or more points per possession. In 2015-16 the most efficient team was the Thunder, with exactly 1 PPP. The New York Knicks in 2015-16 with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis were putting up only 0.89 points per post-up, and this season’s Cavs are last with 0.88 PPP.
Fast forward to the present time and Porzingis has become a 1.27 PPP post-up player and is performing better in post-ups than even Jokić and Embiid (and everyone in the league basically), while in the 15-16 season he earned only 0.82 PPP. Teams have improved in the way they play the game, and in the way they pick their spots to attack opponents.
When you space the floor and stop clogging the lane with post-ups, you’re allowing your guards to drive more easily and make defenses vulnerable.

Guards Simply Expanded the Plays

Guards were and still (mostly) are the biggest catalysts of NBA offenses, and because of that, their most common shot locations changed the least in these 20 years. However those elbow jumpers are now spilled into above-the-break 3-pointers, and those long mid-range baseline jumpers are corner 3-pointers. Players nowadays don’t pump fake their defender who is closing out, and then step into the 2-point area, but step aside for a 3-pointer.
Peja Stojaković was one of the best shooters of his era who would certainly reach even higher levels had he played in modern basketball. Coming off a handoff in this situation, Peja continued to dribble to the FT line and pull up for a middy. In today’s game, Peja would have pulled up and probably drained a 3-pointer. Here are full highlights in case you want to check them out.
Peja was quite advanced for his time, as he was one of the few who shot a higher volume of 3-pointers. If we look at his entire career he has averaged 2.2 3-point makes on 5.5 3-point attempts per game - good for 40.1%. He indeed was ahead of his time. Imagine plugging him in today’s Kings’ team…
Here is another great example of Rip Hamilton, one of the best mid-range (almost exclusively mid-range) shooters. As with Peja, Rip also stops his motion around the elbow and curls toward the hoop for a shot. There are also plays where he runs off-screen, and stops and pops for the long 2 along the baseline!
The same ideas were present in all other plays as well. Flare screens for shooters used to end up in a long 2-pointer, and the isolation game ended up in a 20-foot-long mid-range instead of getting closer. That was the standard operating procedure back then. Constant sets included 2 big men who weren’t interested in shooting further than 10 feet and players dancing around them trying to get open usually inside the 3-point line.
Today’s basketball has almost all these plays, but the only difference is that players have to perform them faster, run more (since they’ll end up outside of the 3-point arc), and be disciplined about it. These little details have become standard and “unwritten” rules in the game of basketball.

The Game has Actually Stopped Changing - in a way

The 2019-20 season when COVID-19 interrupted the NBA season (and the entire world) seems like it just happened, but that was 4 years ago already (damn). And since then, the changing of the game has stagnated significantly.
Looking at this chart you can instantly notice that the rise of ATB 3-pointers and the decline of mid-range shots has plateaued.
But actually, the game is still changing, maybe not in a way Kirk hints with his posts (and the first chart of this text). Players are taking a lot more “short” and “mid” mid-range shots (yeah it sounds confusing, but I don’t know how to lay it out differently).
That’s driven by the way the teams play their defense. They want to take away both 3-pointers and restricted area by employing drop defense. So attackers have to adjust.
We can notice a positive change in the efficiency of both mid-range shots and paint shots (outside of the RA). A change of 4% is quite significant for the paint area. Players such as Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nikola Jokić have gotten extremely skillful at navigating around the paint and using their bodies to get the best possible shots.
The slight increase in the 3-12 feet distance range bumps the share of shots for the “Inside The Paint” zone. And being dangerous in that area has enabled the Nuggets (and some other teams) to be a mismatch nightmare for the entire league.
P.S - The restricted area shots are excluded from the chart showing efficiencies because the average efficiency in there has improved from 63% to 66%, which is a significant jump, but it skews the chart because of the values constantly dancing around 60% (the RA FG% has jumped from 60% to 66% when looking back at 2017-18, and it preceded the jumps in other zones).

The Midrange isn’t Dead - It’s Reserved For the Best

So yeah we’ve been talking about the decline of mid-range throughout the entire post, now it’s time to defend it. In a manner of the well-known proclamation:

“mid-range is dead, long live the mid-range”

The mid-range and further parts of the paint are reserved for the best of the best. Most of the unassisted shots come exactly from those zones on the court.
Despite guards pulling up a lot more for above-the-break 3-pointers, we still have a large number of role players who are mostly knocking down catch&shoot 3-pointers, thus the unassisted rate for above-the-break 3s isn’t rising. The same goes for the restricted area - despite breakthroughs in the geometry of offensive teams and neverending spacing, there is still a greater number of cutters and rim runners that are pulling down those numbers.
The only two areas that haven’t seen a decline in the unassisted rate throughout the years are mid-range and In-The-Paint. This season we have a relatively big spike in the overall assist rate, with 63% (3% more than in the past 5 years, for example - that’s a huge outlier actually) of FGM ending up as assists, so that’s why we have a decline in unassisted share across all zones, but the general trend shows how more than 50% of both mid-range and “in-the-paint but outside of the restricted area” shots are unassisted!

Closing Remarks and TL;DR

I’ve covered a lot of topics throughout this text, so I’ll try to summarize it all for those who might have skimmed through the post - I don’t blame you for that.

Spacing - baseline jumpers turned into corner 3s

Centers and forwards started to expand their range, and thus teams were able to space out the floor and use every inch of it

Sharpshooters curling and “floppying” to a 3-point line

Shot creators who used to shake their opponents only to take a minor step inside the 3-point arc have gotten smarter and started stepping back or aside before shooting. Catch&Shoot players have simply extended their movements to the outside of the arc unlike in the 2000s.

Efficient basketball = boring basketball

In general, this is true, the teams play very similarly today. But I have a hard time accepting that someone would find Jokić, Dončić, Wemby, Shai, Kyrie, or Embiid boring. All of them have a vastly different bag of tricks for reaching the goal of getting buckets.

Stars still take mid-range shots

The rise of “short” mid-range is pretty apparent and it’s countering the most common drop defense that teams deploy. Players are getting more skilled in finishing through floaters, hooks, close-range fadeaways, and other great imaginative shots.

What Lies in the Future?

Rule change.
I’m a huge fan of the removal of defensive 3-seconds. That would enable A LOT better defensive zone schemes where players wouldn’t have to think constantly about 2.9ing. The offensive rating across the league is through the roof despite referees raising the bar on foul criteria (the free throw rate is the lowest in the modern NBA). The pace has also started to slow down, and it’s now at the levels of the 2017-18 season, and the overall number of 3-point attempts has also started to plateau, as shown.
But the teams, and players, just got better. Some of the moves that are nowadays common and not impressive at all have been a complete unknown 20 years ago. The offenses need a new challenge, the easiest way to achieve it is with a rule change. Only then can we move the game even more forward.

A few years ago I began developing metrics for each of the NBA’s top awards, beginning with one for the Defensive Player of the Year, called DPOY Score. They began as formulas to determine who was most worthy of the award but gradually morphed into more of a predictive tool to determine who was most likely to win the awards based on historical trends.
For DPOY, the formula integrates data from box score statistics, tracking data, hustle stats, play-by-play data, team performance, and impact metrics. More specifically, DPOY Score consists of six categories: Point of Attack, Rim Protection, Advanced Metrics, Team Impact, Man Defense, and Reputation.
The best defender isn’t necessarily the one who is best across the board, as elite individual defense is really about maximizing value within your role. If you’re a center, you’re likely not going to have a high rating in point of attack or on-ball defense since you're more valuable contesting at the rim. The inverse is true for a guard.
While some versatile players score highly in every category, that doesn’t necessarily make them more valuable than someone who has limitations but excels in a specialized role. Each category and its weight in the formula is explained in greater detail below.
Point of Attack
The first category provides an estimated impact of a player’s point of attack disruptiveness. Players that generate a lot of activity and chaos on the perimeter score highest in this area. The formula incorporates steals, deflections, charges drawn, defensive miles travelled, defensive loose balls recovered, and three tracking data stats from Basketball Index: Off-Ball Chaser, On-Ball Defense, and Ball Screen Navigation (clink here for more information).
This category tends to favour guards and wings, particularly those that are more aggressive and active on the perimeter.

Rim Protection
Despite the three-point revolution, the most valuable shot in basketball remains the dunk/layup, so having an effective rim protector to shut down the most efficient shots is critical.
As a result, the players that most excel in this area tend to be among the strongest contenders for the Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, the award has historically been given to a player that excels in this area more often than not (68% of DPOY winners were primarily rim protectors - 71% if you include Draymond Green), which is why this category is heavily weighted in the formula.
The formula for rim protection consists of blocks, shots contested, defensive field goal percentage at rim, and points saved at rim - points allowed at rim. Fouls and Defensive rebounds are also factored in, though not weighted very heavily.

Impact Metrics
Impact metrics are all-in-one measurements that estimate a player’s value to his team. Essentially, they serve as more sophisticated versions of plus-minus, using a variety of data to estimate a player’s effect on his team’s point differential per 100 possessions he’s on the floor.
Each of these metrics have separate estimates of offensive and defensive impact, the latter of which make up the stats used in this category. They are all fairly similar though some rely more heavily on box score stats, while others rely more on tracking data or on/off plus-minus. Likewise, some adjust for factors like shooting luck and teammate/opponent quality more heavily than others.
The eight metrics that are incorporated into this category are D-EPM, D-RAPTOR, D-LEBRON, D-DPM, DRPM, DWS, DBPM, DRTG, and LA-DRAPM. These metrics were weighted according to studies1, 2, 3, 4, 5, analyst rankings6, and NBA executive surveys7, which provide a general consensus on which are best.
Measuring individual defensive impact is notoriously difficult and imperfect, and can never fully be captured purely with statistics. Nevertheless, in full season samples, blending different metrics like this to find a consensus average is generally fairly effective.
It’s also important to note that these metrics estimate how valuable a defender is for their team, which can be heavily reliant on schemes and personnel. A change of scenery can have a large impact on a player’s estimated value within these metrics, as certain players perfectly fit within their team’s system, while others are poorly utilized - Brook Lopez is a good recent example, immediately excelling in Milwaukee’s drop coverage-heavy system after a pedestrian season with the Lakers.
Similarily, despite not having an elite defensive reputation, Nikola Jokic ranks highly in most defensive metrics (11th in this category in 2023 and sixth in 2024) because the Nuggets defense is much better with him on the court. Denver has deliberately constructed their roster and schemes to maximize his strengths and protect against his limitations, which helps him provide value in his specific role. Jokic’s defensive value to Denver is also amplified since they lack an adequate replacement at his position causing their defense to suffer without him.
Ultimately, while these metrics are not perfect, they are reliable estimates that provide a rough outlook of a player’s defensive impact, especially when used collectively - i.e. a player that scores highly across the board can safely be considered a valuable defender for their team.
These metrics are frequently cited in Defensive Player of the Year conversations, making them one of the stronger predictors of the true contenders for the award. As a result, this category is also weighted highly in the formula.

Team Impact
Players that play for successful teams, particularly those that are strong defensively, tend to get increased consideration for DPOY. Team success is an important factor in every award race, which is why this category factors in wins and team defensive rating. On/off defensive rating differential is also considered in this category.
Along with team success, availability is a very important factor in every award race because the more a player is on the court, the more potential impact they can have. Someone that plays less than 25 minutes per game or missed half the season never win these awards, while players that rarely miss games and are prominent figures in their team’s rotation receive increased consideration.
No matter how good you are defensively, if you’re not on the court, you aren’t having a positive impact for your team. Thus, both games played and minutes per game are important factors in awards voting.
Ultimately, this is mostly used to give a boost to players that play starter minutes and rarely miss games, particularly those on strong defensive teams that are better defensively when they are on the court. The leaderboard shows the player’s that best fit that criteria.

On-Ball/Man Defense
The final statistical category estimates a player’s value as a man-on-man defender. This incorporates matchup difficulty & defensive versatility (BBall Index), defensive field goal percentage (percentage of shots contested that go in), and difference in expected defensive field goal percentage (defensive field goal percentage - average opponent field goal percentage).
Matchup difficulty is weighted particularly high as it demonstrates how frequently a player defends opposing stars, a strong indicator that his team relies on him as a critical defender.
Guards and wings are generally more relied on as primary on-ball stoppers and thus, tend to score higher here since certain teams deliberately have their big man guard weaker players to allow them to be more aggressive when helping in the paint (Giannis Antetokounmpo and Robert Williams III are good examples), while most big men simply guard the opposing team’s biggest players, regardless of their skill/talent level. Due to this, matchup difficulty is weighted more heavily for guards and wings than it is for big men.
Nevertheless, this is a great category to demonstrate some of the premier on-ball/man defenders in the league, demonstrating which players are most consistently relied on and effective at defending difficult matchups.

Reputation
It shouldn’t be controversial to suggest that award voters are often biased. There are many different biases that play into voting but perhaps the biggest is the tendency for some voters to let their preconceived notions from years past colour their perception of the present. In other words, some voters will base their votes, at least partially, on the past reputation of a player rather than what they did in the season they’re actually voting on.
Initially, I didn’t factor this in, but I consistently noticed outliers each year that all seemed to share this characteristic. It’s why players often receive All-Defensive/DPOY consideration in years after their impact on that end regressed. Kobe Bryant is the poster child for this, as I’d argue more than half of his all-defensive selections were suspect. More recently Kawhi Leonard received three consecutive all-defensive selections from 2019-2021 that seemed to be largely reputation based.
It’s hard to shake a player’s reputation, thus, guys that have built strong defensive reputations in the minds of voters for their work in prior seasons often get a boost. To factor this into the equation, I added one point for each all-defensive selection a player had received in the previous five seasons, and an additional point if they had previously won a DPOY. According to my formula, here’s the players that are most likely to benefit this season from reputation bias.

Summary
Statistics on their own will never perfectly capture the complexities and nuance of measuring individual defensive impact. It’s hard for stats to capture a timely rotation, good positioning, strong ball denials, or crisp communication. Likewise, stats can sometimes be misleading. Some players that generate high levels of blocks, steals and deflections do so at the cost of being overly aggressive and getting out of position.
While many prefer to advocate for the “eye-test”, this method is extremely flawed and subject to individual biases. There’s simply way too much happening for the human eye to properly perceive what is going on all over the court simultaneously, particularly when it comes to off-ball positioning, communication, scheme execution, and help defense.
Film study, which requires focusing on one player at a time while pausing and slowing down the game, is more effective but is also extremely time consuming and simply not feasible to do for every player, every game. Combining statistics with samples of film study is generally the best method of analysis, but it’s far from an exact science. In truth, there is no perfect way to measure defense.
However, while a metric like this will always be imperfect and imprecise, I’d argue it’s generally effective. Extrapolating the formula to past seasons shows that the results are quite consistent with the actual awards voting. Below I included a list of the top five DPOY vote getters and All-Defensive team selections in each season since 2015-16, as well as my DPOY Score projections for those seasons.

My DPOY Score metric has predicted seven of the nine winners (78%) and 19 of the 27 finalists over that span (70%). Additionally, all of the top five vote receivers over those years have ranked in the top 20 in my metric in their respective seasons*, and 77% of them placed in the top ten.
*LeBron James in 2017 is the only exception - a fluky outlier since that year’s voting was dominated by three players, so he was tied for fifth despite only receiving one third-placed vote. The Cavs had a bottom ten defense that season and LeBron got a lot of flack for his effort on that end, so that vote was clearly biased.
The metric has also correctly predicted 72% of the All-Defensive selections and an additional 17% would’ve claimed a spot on a hypothetical third, fourth, or fifth all-defensive team. Likewise, all ninety projected selections made by the metric received at least one all-defensive vote in that respective season. Thus, none of these projections were off-base in the minds of at least some voters.
2018 Rudy Gobert (4th) and 2022 Marcus Smart (6th) were the only DPOY winners that were not predicted, although both are unique outliers. Rudy’s placement was hurt by the fact that he only played 56 games. If not for those 26 missed games, he likely would’ve been number one in my metric. It’s surprising the voters overlooked this, as no other winner has played fewer than 63 games (excluding lockout seasons). In fact, the NBA’s current mandate is a minimum of 65 games to even qualify for the award, so Gobert would not have even been eligible in 2024. Rudy had an incredible defensive impact when on the court that season, but his win is surprising given his lack of games played.
As for Smart, that vote was the closest and most balanced of the decade, and the decision to award him was controversial and heavily narrative-driven. Many voters did not want to give Gobert his fourth award after another early playoff exit the year prior, particularly since awarding him would have tied him for the record. The DPOY voting makes sense in this light, considering none of the other big man candidates (Robert Williams III, Jaren Jackson Jr., Al Horford, Bam Adebayo, Giannis Antetokounmpo) could compete with Gobert’s stats, so anti-Gobert voters instead rallied behind perimeter-oriented players like Smart and Bridges who are harder to directly compare. Narratives like this are hard to account for in the formula, which explains this discrepancy. Smart was the highest ranking guard/wing in my metric that year, while Bridges was the fourth-highest, so my metric wasn't too far off.
Despite these two misses, the formula has largely been very accurate. The average voting placement of the predicted winners was 1.4, showing a very strong correlation between my metric’s predictions and the actual results.

Now that the model has been proven to be successful at projecting these awards, here's who it identifies as the current frontrunners for the DPOY for the 2023-24 season (as of April 2nd).

The metric is largely consistent with the current betting odds. Both identify Rudy Gobert as the heavy frontrunner, with Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Davis as his closest competition. Oddsmakers generally view Bam Adebayo, Chet Holmgren, Derrick White, and Giannis Antetokounmpo as fringe contenders, and they each place in the top ten for my metric. Herbert Jones and Jarrett Allen are the other fringe contenders who are often mentioned, and they currently rank 14th and 15th respectively. Overall, it appears the metric is on track for another strong showing.

Final Thoughts
Ultimately, basketball is a very complex and nuanced sport. Ranking individual players purely with statistics is imperfect and leaves out important context. Defensive impact is especially difficult to quantify, particularly when comparing different positions/roles against one another.
Nevertheless, this metric is generally an effective tool for identifying some of the top defenders in the league each season and predicting the likely contenders for the DPOY award. This year’s award seems to be all but wrapped up with Rudy Gobert seemingly running away with it in both my metric and the betting odds.

Every basketball fan/enthusiast has certainly come across some variation of this chart/image, most often published by Kirk Goldsberry. I first saw his charts back in 2018-ish and that got me involved with the world of basketball analytics. I’ve noticed he posts a variation of this chart quite often, at least once a season (no really, 19-20, 21-22, 21-22 again, and 22-23). They always blow up and have a shitload of engagement, reach, and other social media metrics so I kind of do understand why he is posting this constantly.
What I want to try to do is dive in as to why and how the game has changed the way it did. I’m not the first one doing this deep dive, and I think some people have done it a lot better than me (links in the end!), but this topic is dear to me and I want to tackle it here using the play-by-play and shot data that we have at our disposal.

The Basics

The basics of the change are simple, the teams started to figure out the well-known “knowledge” that 3 > 2, so they began to funnel all those mid-range shots toward the 3-point line. But I think a better way to grasp that would be to put it out on the court.
Each bin on the chart is represented with a color spanning from white to brownish color where white represents the lower value, of 0.7 points per shot or less, while brown color is around 1.3 or more - I capped the values at 0.7 at 1.3 → restricted area certainly has some bins over 1.3 for example.
Restricted area and corners are the places to be and shoot from, while above-the-break 3-pointers are next in order their shade of brown is generally close to 1.1 points per shot which is a lot better than the bleak white color that spans across the entire mid-range and outside of the paint. Even those elbows that were the targets of many curl and floppy actions are just average at best.
If we switch a flip in our mind and observe colors as the frequency of shots - we would then pretty much get a modern-day distribution of shots on the court and even the chart at the right side from the start of the text. So this chart alone already gives hints as to why basketball has changed.

How did the game change?

Now that we understand the basics and the foundation of why the game has changed, we can go into the tidbits of how it changed. We can examine the details of shot data to try and find the reasons behind the disappearance of baseline and elbow shots (spoiler alert - shot data alone won’t be enough).
Let’s start by observing which player positions changed their distribution the most.
The thing that bothers people the most nowadays is that everyone plays the same style of basketball, only shooting threes and diving into the paint. Well, the right-hand charts would confirm that thinking, I would disagree with it though, because, on a deeper level of basketball analysis, there is a huge difference in how, for example, Sixers and Nuggets set up Embiid/Jokić in their favorite situations.
Because of that thinking - people also often mention that basketball got boring. I agree with the statement, in a way. That is because there is no more random shit happening during the game. If Nenê Hilario played in today’s basketball you wouldn’t see him randomly taking up a baseline jumper as he did back in 2003-04 when playing for Denver.
When things get efficient, they get boring.

Big Men Increased the Range - How the Big Men position got “Brook Lopezed”

Centers and forwards have seen the biggest increase in a total increase of 3-point rate (20% more 3-pointers today than in 2003-04) - and that’s where the overall influx of 3-pointers is most seen.
Rasheed Wallace, Rashard Lewis, Al Harrington, Channing Frye, and Ryan Anderson have all started paving the way towards spacing the floor back in the late 2000s and early 2010s just for Kevin Love and especially Brook Lopez to change the way centers play the game completely. Lopez was an amazing traditional big man, playing in the low post, scoring through a variety of post moves, and crashing the boards - all that earned him an all-star spot on the Nets. Then one year Lopez just decided to start shooting 3-pointers and making them at an extremely efficient rate.
And exactly those types of players (Brook, Myles Turner, Chet Holmgren, Jaren Jackson Jr., etc...) are one of the main reasons for achieving great spacing.

No Posting Up

By moving the centers outside of the 3-point line, you automatically have a lot fewer post-ups, which were frankly mostly unnecessary and forced poor shots. We don’t have to (and can’t actually) go back to 2003-04 to check the difference between post-ups through the numbers. But we can notice that huge difference even when we compare the current number of post-ups with the 2015-16 season - the first available year of post-up data from nba.com.
Back then, the median number of post-up possessions per game stood at 7.6, nowadays the maximum is 8.6. But the post-ups in today’s game have become a super efficient setup with 10 teams performing 1 or more points per possession. In 2015-16 the most efficient team was the Thunder, with exactly 1 PPP. The New York Knicks in 2015-16 with Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis were putting up only 0.89 points per post-up, and this season’s Cavs are last with 0.88 PPP.
Fast forward to the present time and Porzingis has become a 1.27 PPP post-up player and is performing better in post-ups than even Jokić and Embiid (and everyone in the league basically), while in the 15-16 season he earned only 0.82 PPP. Teams have improved in the way they play the game, and in the way they pick their spots to attack opponents.
When you space the floor and stop clogging the lane with post-ups, you’re allowing your guards to drive more easily and make defenses vulnerable.

Guards Simply Expanded the Plays

Guards were and still (mostly) are the biggest catalysts of NBA offenses, and because of that, their most common shot locations changed the least in these 20 years. However those elbow jumpers are now spilled into above-the-break 3-pointers, and those long mid-range baseline jumpers are corner 3-pointers. Players nowadays don’t pump fake their defender who is closing out, and then step into the 2-point area, but step aside for a 3-pointer.
Peja Stojaković was one of the best shooters of his era who would certainly reach even higher levels had he played in modern basketball. Coming off a handoff in this situation, Peja continued to dribble to the FT line and pull up for a middy. In today’s game, Peja would have pulled up and probably drained a 3-pointer. Here are full highlights in case you want to check them out.
Peja was quite advanced for his time, as he was one of the few who shot a higher volume of 3-pointers. If we look at his entire career he has averaged 2.2 3-point makes on 5.5 3-point attempts per game - good for 40.1%. He indeed was ahead of his time. Imagine plugging him in today’s Kings’ team…
Here is another great example of Rip Hamilton, one of the best mid-range (almost exclusively mid-range) shooters. As with Peja, Rip also stops his motion around the elbow and curls toward the hoop for a shot. There are also plays where he runs off-screen, and stops and pops for the long 2 along the baseline!
The same ideas were present in all other plays as well. Flare screens for shooters used to end up in a long 2-pointer, and the isolation game ended up in a 20-foot-long mid-range instead of getting closer. That was the standard operating procedure back then. Constant sets included 2 big men who weren’t interested in shooting further than 10 feet and players dancing around them trying to get open usually inside the 3-point line.
Today’s basketball has almost all these plays, but the only difference is that players have to perform them faster, run more (since they’ll end up outside of the 3-point arc), and be disciplined about it. These little details have become standard and “unwritten” rules in the game of basketball.

The Game has Actually Stopped Changing - in a way

The 2019-20 season when COVID-19 interrupted the NBA season (and the entire world) seems like it just happened, but that was 4 years ago already (damn). And since then, the changing of the game has stagnated significantly.
Looking at this chart you can instantly notice that the rise of ATB 3-pointers and the decline of mid-range shots has plateaued.
But actually, the game is still changing, maybe not in a way Kirk hints with his posts (and the first chart of this text). Players are taking a lot more “short” and “mid” mid-range shots (yeah it sounds confusing, but I don’t know how to lay it out differently).
That’s driven by the way the teams play their defense. They want to take away both 3-pointers and restricted area by employing drop defense. So attackers have to adjust.
We can notice a positive change in the efficiency of both mid-range shots and paint shots (outside of the RA). A change of 4% is quite significant for the paint area. Players such as Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nikola Jokić have gotten extremely skillful at navigating around the paint and using their bodies to get the best possible shots.
The slight increase in the 3-12 feet distance range bumps the share of shots for the “Inside The Paint” zone. And being dangerous in that area has enabled the Nuggets (and some other teams) to be a mismatch nightmare for the entire league.
P.S - The restricted area shots are excluded from the chart showing efficiencies because the average efficiency in there has improved from 63% to 66%, which is a significant jump, but it skews the chart because of the values constantly dancing around 60% (the RA FG% has jumped from 60% to 66% when looking back at 2017-18, and it preceded the jumps in other zones).

The Midrange isn’t Dead - It’s Reserved For the Best

So yeah we’ve been talking about the decline of mid-range throughout the entire post, now it’s time to defend it. In a manner of the well-known proclamation:

“mid-range is dead, long live the mid-range”

The mid-range and further parts of the paint are reserved for the best of the best. Most of the unassisted shots come exactly from those zones on the court.
Despite guards pulling up a lot more for above-the-break 3-pointers, we still have a large number of role players who are mostly knocking down catch&shoot 3-pointers, thus the unassisted rate for above-the-break 3s isn’t rising. The same goes for the restricted area - despite breakthroughs in the geometry of offensive teams and neverending spacing, there is still a greater number of cutters and rim runners that are pulling down those numbers.
The only two areas that haven’t seen a decline in the unassisted rate throughout the years are mid-range and In-The-Paint. This season we have a relatively big spike in the overall assist rate, with 63% (3% more than in the past 5 years, for example - that’s a huge outlier actually) of FGM ending up as assists, so that’s why we have a decline in unassisted share across all zones, but the general trend shows how more than 50% of both mid-range and “in-the-paint but outside of the restricted area” shots are unassisted!

Closing Remarks and TL;DR

I’ve covered a lot of topics throughout this text, so I’ll try to summarize it all for those who might have skimmed through the post - I don’t blame you for that.

Spacing - baseline jumpers turned into corner 3s

Centers and forwards started to expand their range, and thus teams were able to space out the floor and use every inch of it

Sharpshooters curling and “floppying” to a 3-point line

Shot creators who used to shake their opponents only to take a minor step inside the 3-point arc have gotten smarter and started stepping back or aside before shooting. Catch&Shoot players have simply extended their movements to the outside of the arc unlike in the 2000s.

Efficient basketball = boring basketball

In general, this is true, the teams play very similarly today. But I have a hard time accepting that someone would find Jokić, Dončić, Wemby, Shai, Kyrie, or Embiid boring. All of them have a vastly different bag of tricks for reaching the goal of getting buckets.

Stars still take mid-range shots

The rise of “short” mid-range is pretty apparent and it’s countering the most common drop defense that teams deploy. Players are getting more skilled in finishing through floaters, hooks, close-range fadeaways, and other great imaginative shots.

What Lies in the Future?

Rule change.
I’m a huge fan of the removal of defensive 3-seconds. That would enable A LOT better defensive zone schemes where players wouldn’t have to think constantly about 2.9ing. The offensive rating across the league is through the roof despite referees raising the bar on foul criteria (the free throw rate is the lowest in the modern NBA). The pace has also started to slow down, and it’s now at the levels of the 2017-18 season, and the overall number of 3-point attempts has also started to plateau, as shown.
But the teams, and players, just got better. Some of the moves that are nowadays common and not impressive at all have been a complete unknown 20 years ago. The offenses need a new challenge, the easiest way to achieve it is with a rule change. Only then can we move the game even more forward.

On a post I made today ( New folks - think more deeply and ask better questions : ), several people asked specifically in the comments about how to come up with ideas for trading strategies. I didn't see anyone make a post on this topic, so I figured I'd do it myself to share my own thoughts and give an opportunity for experienced folks to share theirs.
My general thoughts:
Instead of "ideas for trading strategies", I think a more useful framing is "how do we come up with *hypotheses* for trading strategies?" . A rough hypothesis that can be tested/refined about a potential opportunity in the market. Some sort of vague "I wonder if" statement. "I wonder if there's a spike in the bid-ask spread on a stock before the volatility increases. maybe I could purchase options to capitalize on that". "I wonder if this crypto has long, persistent trends I could capture with some kind of moving averages and then trade on it" "I wonder if I can use ___ indicator to tell me when I need to switch from RSI mean version trading to MA-based momentum trading on this asset" etc etc
So, how to come up with hypotheses? For me, there are roughly two parts:

1. Consistently consume diverse, medium/high quality content on the subject
2. Data exploration primarily through data visualization

Part 1:
I would highly recommend consistently consuming some sort of content about trading (not huge amounts but like little intellectual appetizers). Whether it's blogs (Medium), forums (Reddit), podcasts (Chat with Traders and Better System Trader on Youtube), lectures (Hudson & Thames on Youtube, Ernie Chan lectures) or books (Marcos Lopez de Prado). The diversity here is equally, if not more important, than the quality. In my opinion, Marcos Lopez de Prado's books are very high quality but those alone won't just hand you a million dollar trading strat. Consume a wide variety of content to get a variety of perspectives, jot down interesting/fun/appealing ideas, explore and validate them. I say "consistently" because this is an area where the problems we're solving are very difficult - so it's likely you'll need to spend a lot of time thinking about them. If you consistently consume material on this subject, it'll keep your brain whirring in creative ways so that indeed your shower thoughts are you trying to solve this, even on a subconscious mental level.
Note: I would be very wary when reading academic papers detailing trading strategies or indicators/variables for strategies (whether rule-based or ML). They're often extremely questionable and I have personally found it very hard to reproduce many such "studies". Please see comments for great discussion with u/diogenesFIRE on this topic.
This works (for me) because:

1. It keeps me motivated. If I'm excited, I'm going to have better ideas, be more creative and spend more mental time on this without even trying.
2. It provides legitimate mental models/approaches for you to adopt, sometimes
3. You will start synthesizing new and interesting ways of looking at your data when you can draw upon the experience of others. Cool idea here, interesting approach there, didn't even know that data existed, never thought you could do that etc.

The point here is NOT to try to find a strategy someone else made so you can copy for free. This is a road to nowhere. The point is basically to have context on what people are doing and trying, what range of possibilities exists etc. It's like... if you're trying to cook a cool new recipe, reading a bunch of recipes online might be a good starting point to get some ideas/inspiration (note: I am not a professional chef lol). I imagine it would be hard to come up with a great novel recipe if you've never read a cookbook, never read anyone else's recipe, and you just had to come up with something from scratch in a bubble.
Part 2:
For me, the by FAR most effective thing to do this is to combine Method 1 with good data visualization. Your brain is a complex pattern-recognizing machine and if you have SOME kind of vague idea/hypothesis of what to look at (bid-ask spread vs. volatility, moving averages vs. trends, volume-weighted returns vs. length of trend whatever whatever) you should absolutely try to visualize it. Look at charts and plots. Whether it's price charts with indicators on it, or correlation plots between variables of interest, or anything else, try to find easy/quick ways to visualize the thing you're interested in and really sit down and just study those charts. Let your brain soak in them for a while. Don't immediately try to implement a trading strategy, just try to UNDERSTAND the data you're look at. "Huh, why does volatility go up a lot faster than it comes down?" "Huh, it's interesting that price responds in ____ way following a large order". Try to really explore and dig into your data. I believe visually is the best way to do it because any kind of quantification at this stage will leave out too much information (correlation coefficients and other singular values will ALWAYS be less informative at the exploration stage than if you take the time to look at the chart and really absorb the information there).
Side note:
I believe that this data exploration stage is absolutely crucial in quantitative trading and in order to really do this effectively, you have to find a way to make it easy for yourself. It shouldn't be a 3 day painful process to be able to generate a chart of your variables of interest. Sort out ways to 1) get the data you need and 2) have ways to easily process it so that you can rapidly, dynamically, interactively play with it in different ways to quickly iterate through your hypotheses, see new perspectives and get new ideas.
Once you think you're onto something, then perhaps it's time to do some backtesting/tuning/training etc
It's not a linear process, you'll be bouncing around a lot and that's totally fine. But having some ways to draw inspiration, spending time on your own contemplating, spending time studying (visually) charts to understand what does the market feel/look like from a hundred perspectives, that will help you gain a deeper understanding of the possibilities as you start coming up with your own "what if I try...".
If you're rule-based oriented, these hypotheses will likely be ideas for trading signals or new 'rules'. If you're ML oriented, these hypotheses will likely end up being features to feed your models.
I hope this is helpful, would be curious what reactions and thoughts are, what other people's approaches are.

Chapter 1 – The Light of a New Sun
My body stretched like raw dough, taller and thinner without me moving an inch. One moment I was passing under the red light of an ancient star, then the horizon of the Foldgate passed and I was bathed in the sharp blue of a new system and a young sun.
I basked for a longer moment than I should have in that glaring light. My ship too, her hull creaked and pinged as it settled into the heat of the star, singing her own welcome.
My stomach churned and I had to press fingers into my eyes until they danced with colours to keep the nausea at bay. I wasn’t good with Foldgate travel. The gates bent the laws of physics to their limits to touch two distant points together and I felt the achingly eldritch effects of it. A shadow passed over the windows of the cockpit, breaking me from my self-reflection. The super structure of the Foldgate was enormous, dwarfing my small ship in its manifolds, gantries, and forests of solar collectors. We slipped through among the giants, carried by the momentum of our passage until we cleared the transit zone with the other ships jumping alongside us.
“Are you going to pilot?” Chowder’s voice came through the ship speakers, slightly distorted and crackling. I’d thought to replace them, but the moment I’d switched out the components and Chowder’s speech came through clear we know we’d made a mistake and swapped them back. In seeking improvement I’d almost lost my friend her voice.
“No, that’s alright.” I unclipped the harness holding me into the plush synthetic leather seat. It took a moment for me to find my feet when trying to stand, my head was still woozy and my equilibrium awry. The artificial gravity didn’t help either, this close to a star the gravity well was intense, so it was struggling mightily to keep down as down and up as up. Chowder didn’t seem to mind though, she perched on the navigation console just below the broad windows, polarised and half shuttered from the blast of light. “You can take it from here, tell me when we’re coming up on Ephyra.”
Chowder pressed her paws primly together as she stood sentinel with her wide green eyes staring at me unblinking. Her whiskers twitched. The ship hadn’t accelerated, nor slowed, nor taken any navigation action at all.
“Please?” I asked. Chowder wasn’t satisfied, her feline glare tunnelled a hole right through me to our reactor core. I reached out and scratched her on the soft white spot under her chin. “Will you please pilot us to Ephyra and let me know when we get close, buddy?”
Chowder settled down onto the console, her head rested onto a folded paw and her tail curled around her cat body. Her reply was simple, the ship accelerated with a soft ramp that I felt in a shifting of the gravity, quickly compensated for by the straining system and the hum of engines firing. She could have burned harder, knocked me over, she’d done it before in a fit of pique. I didn’t like being stern with her, but that was one time that I had almost raised my voice. She’d not spoken to me for a week.
I staggered the short steps to the stairs out of the bridge. My ship was built for a crew of no more than five, with just Chowder and me it felt large enough, but there would be no wasted space with a full complement. She might have been small, but it was more than I had ever dared dreamed of, and I was grateful for each day that the engines churned, and the hull groaned for it meant that I lived and travelled and could see so much of what the galaxy held. The stairs led to a metal bridge that crossed above the open cargo space currently holding my gym, dry and canned food stores, spare parts, and might occasionally have goods or packages that I was asked to transport from port to port.
I ducked through an airtight bulkhead whose doorway I had left haphazardly ajar probably in contravention of many Covenant standard operating procedures. I had started out by the book, checking every switch, and measuring the turns of each valve, but years of travel later and some habits had become worse than they perhaps should have. With a boat as old as Chowder there were more than enough things to worry about.
The galley was a low room in which I had precious little head clearance. If I’d hopped, I’d be off to the medical bay, well…the single bunk that had a few bundles of bandages and an emergency medicine kit that served that function. The galley itself was well equipped with a range of electrical cooking equipment and an oversized table meant for a crew to dine and socialise around. Everything that could be bolted or clipped to the deckplate was, just in case of catastrophic gravity loss.
I breezed through, my queasy stomach making it a necessity to speed through the ship to my living quarters. I didn’t quite lose my stomach into the vacuum toilet, but my skin paled to a lighter brown, and I felt cold beads of sweat as my mouth watered, ready in any case. The feeling passed and I was able to shower, properly heated water and sudsy soap. I was glad at the age of Chowder for that, at least, many of the newer ships had air showers that never seemed to get you fully clean.
Refreshed, I dressed in black cargo trousers, a t-shirt that clung to a chest developed out of the boredom of long travel, and a light jacket that I zipped up to my chin. I tied half my hair back in a pony and let the rest lay over my collar except two framing strands that drooped about my face. I’d started a new regime on this trip, so it was looking shinier than ever.
I sat straight at the galley table, one foot tapping an insistent beat against the deckplate, the other curled under me. “Do you think they’ll let me see the poles?” I asked Chowder, her body was still on the bridge, but that wouldn’t stop her from hearing me.
“Ephyrans do not welcome visitors to any of their other settlements. Off world travellers are welcome only in the port city of Port Nemato.” Her voice crackled out at me, a different tone from a different speaker, but peculiarly Chowder, nonetheless. “Would you like me to recite local tax ordinances? They may be useful to completing your job more quickly.”
I turned the page of the slim volume that I’d been thumbing through for the month-long voyage to reach the system. “Even this guy,” I said, referencing the author of the guidebook, “wasn’t allowed out of the city limits. What a waste, they’ve got a whole planet, and from what this guy says, it looks like it would be worth a trip all over…No, buddy, I don’t want you to tell me about the local tax laws, I’m fine with the Federal.” If I hadn’t acknowledged her query, even though we’d been over it a dozen times already, she would have just started spewing facts and figures ad nauseum.
“Will you be vacationing?” she asked.
“What are you insinuating there, bud?”
“If you spent less time on leisure activities when we travelled to our job locations, you could be done in…sixty-four-point five percent of the time. On average.”
“You cannot calculate the value of culture. In any case, I need to have those experiences to write up for my blog. As always,” I raised an eyebrow towards one of the many cameras I knew Chowder had trained on me at any moment, “I will do exactly what is necessary to discharge my duties as a Federal Taxation Investigator, then whatever I do with my free time is no one’s business but my own.”
Chowder kept a sullen silence. We’d spent a month flying through the black, hopping Foldgate to Foldgate to reach the very edge of Covenant space, and it still wasn’t enough. Sometimes I thought she wouldn’t be content until I was welded fast to the hull…
I closed the guidebook with a dramatic sigh and tossed it into the open mouth of the duffel bag that I had packed in the last few days of my journey. As much as I was looking forward to seeing the sights so poorly described by Ms Calamagi in her ‘Guide to the Peoples and Culture of Ephyra,’ I would find out soon enough why I had been sent so far away to this distant system. My current orders were both cryptic and bland. About right for the Federal Tax Authority.
I grumbled through the wait for Chowder to navigate us the astronomical unit from the Foldgate to the planet, even whipping us through the void at an average of fifty million kilometres an hour it still took three. That was the time I felt most anticipation. It built for the weeks and months that I had traversed the galaxy between jobs, but the last few hours from sun to planet were like glorious torture.
Chowder opened one lazy eye as I clattered down the stairs into the bridge and sat in the pilot’s chair leaning forward with my elbows on my knees and my attention out of the window. Chowder didn’t need to open her eyes, she could see me anywhere she pleased, the ship cameras a thousand unblinking eyes feeding her more information than any living mind could process.
“Centre panel,” she said. “I’ve got us dead on course, you should be seeing the planet now.”
She was right, she almost always was in matters of navigation. Not so much in taste and emotion, but she was working on it. Ephyra was a tiny glowing dot, barely larger than a distant star, growing in the middle of the window. It started out white, just a reflection of the sun bouncing from its atmosphere, but slowly it resolved. First came the shape, round and smooth like an old earth billiard ball, then colour. We closed in and slowed, I could feel the tug of deceleration even as the artificial gravity adjusted, it was always a millisecond behind or a fraction of a g off.
The planet was luscious green, not in the way of earth with its brown and blue expanses, broken by the soft white of clouds. Ephyra was greener, its land about the middle like a broad belt that encroached high towards the poles was dark green and misted. It had clouds, of course, if there was water there were clouds. Even if there were no water at all, it seemed that all planets had convened and decided that something had to fall, be that silicon, diamonds, or simply acid strong enough to melt away a ship. Ephyra had ice at the poles, little caps of white approached by a narrow strip of thinning forests and a band of tundra that melded into the frozen deserts.
It was the oceans that were most intriguing, for they too were green. Not the same deep green of the forest that covered so much of the land, but an aquamarine, softer than the darkness of earth’s oceans. Ms Calamagi was so limited in her telling in so many ways and was dry enough that I’d slept well every time I’d tried too hard to absorb her work, but she spoke of the oceans and plants that grew under the surface. They were like plankton, or kelp, or…something. She couldn’t quite keep her facts in order. Whatever it was was so ubiquitous that it had altered the very character of the oceans.
I was so fixated on the planet as it grew ever larger in the window, that I jumped when Chowder interrupted. “Space Station Ephyra,” she said.”
What at first had been a speck that I’d ignored growing in the right most window had resolved into a station, long in its tail, pointing down to the planet, with a building disc at its head. There was precious little beauty in its construction, it bristled with bridges and antenna, gantries, and airlocks. It was the way of the old Covenant, function over form. For a planet only ten years a member, the station itself looked ancient.
“What do we know about the station?” I asked Chowder.
“Used to be in orbit around P-9405, Halcyon. Redirected nine years ago.”
Halcyon. That colony had no need for a station. It was macabre, a floating monument to a now empty world. I supposed it was wasteful to allow a station to orbit alone above a place destined to be forever barren, it was right to move it to somewhere that it would see new light. But still. There as sadness in the obelisk that I couldn’t shake. Hopefully it would oversee more joy in this system.
“Would you like to take us down?” Chowder prodded me with her words. She was doing it on purpose, she hated seeing me turn glum.
“No, thanks buddy. Take us down easy. Do we have clearance?”
“Port Nemato replied, we are ready for our descent.”
“Grand. Let’s get land side.”
We began our final burn to the surface, the planet growing until it was our whole world, stretching until the horizon disappeared beyond the edges of the windows and all that filled it was forest and mountains.
My feet itched and my hands tingled, momentary doldrums cast aside with the excitement of land fall. A new world. So many things to experience and adventures to uncover.
