2024.05.06 13:19 earl-grey-latte Now Reading: Sanditon (May 6- May 20)
| Welcome, JABC members! I hope you all enjoyed Lady Susan. It is now time to read the unfinished novel that started our journey here, Sanditon. Jane Austen only managed to finish eleven chapters (and start a twelfth) before she unfortunately became too ill to continue writing, but the story she conveyed continues to inspire many of us today. Our assignment for the next two weeks will be to read the entire Sanditon fragment. Questions of the Day will be posted, but please feel free to use this thread to discuss anything that crosses your mind while reading. Some things about the Sanditon fragment you may not know: - The manuscript shows that Jane Austen started writing Sanditon on January 27, 1817. The last page is marked March 18. She called the novel The Brothers.
- In 1805, Jane and her mother, sister, and friend spent at least a month and a half in the seaside town of Worthing, England, which was a fishing village before becoming a fashionable resort. While there, Jane met and befriended the Worthing entrepreneur Edward Ogle, on whom Sanditon's Tom Parker is based.
Austen and her party stayed in this cottage (then known as Stanford's Cottage) during their trip to Worthing. Yes, today it is a Pizza Express. The Worthing seaside today Warwick House, the home of Edward Ogle in Worthing. Trafalgar House was likely based on this home. Sadly Warwick House is no longer standing. - Other visitors to Worthing in Austen's day included several royals, even the Prince of Wales (whom Austen famously disliked), and Lord Byron.
- Jane Austen's nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh first published a summary of Sanditon (which he titled The Last Work) in his book Memoir of Jane Austen. Sanditon was not published in full until R.W. Chapman, a scholar and book collector, published it in 1925 under the title Fragment of a Novel.
- Sanditon has been "finished" or continued by others many times, including by Jane Austen's own niece Anna Austen Lefroy in around 1840.
As always, links to read and/or listen to the book for free are available in the subreddit's menu/sidebar, as is our current schedule. Happy reading! submitted by earl-grey-latte to JaneAustenBookClub [link] [comments] |
2024.05.06 10:49 Rfowl009 Best Leading Actress Predictions: "Yes, No, Maybe So" Edition
The second installment of my "Yes, No, Maybe So" slate of predictions, where I lay out my wide pool of contenders and weigh each of their pros and cons. My
first entry for the Best Picture field was received well enough, so I figured I'd keep going. I hope these are fun to parse through and prove useful when you make your own predictions.
I'm sure I'm leaving out some viable contenders, but these are the 20 names that stood out to me the most while surveying the field:
BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
ANORA (Neon) Mikey Madison (No previous nominations; 25-years-old)
Role: Anora, a Brooklyn sex worker who seizes her shot at marrying into royalty.
Yes: She's carved out a nice reputation as a fearless actor. Baker is on a steady roll of mounting acclaim, and this project could really uncork her as a force of nature.
No: Mikey goes for it in every role, but she's not everybody's cup of tea. Her style might be too eccentric for the median voter. Simon Rex can attest that knocking a Sean Baker leading role out of park is more useful for indie cred than Academy gold.
Maybe So: If the movie nabs a big honor at Cannes -- Best Actress, perhaps? -- she'll definitely be in the conversation.
BLITZ (Apple Original Films) Saoirse Ronan (Four previous nominations; 30-years-old)
Role: Unspecified, but presumably a young woman trying to survive the London Blitz.
Yes: She's broken records by racking up nominations before even turning 30; a win feels more life a matter of "when" than "if." And what could be a more prime opportunity than starring in a Steve McQueen film that looks like a frontrunner on paper?
No: The parameters of her role are still unclear. She might be more of a supporting player than everyone is presuming, and it's possible she doesn't even have the standout part among the cast.
Maybe So: It doesn't look like
The Outrun is going far in any awards conversation, but it was a very recent reminder of how much she can elevate a movie that otherwise wouldn't drum up hullabaloo. And if
Blitz is strong enough, she could ride the wave on the strength of her reputation even if the role isn't a standout.
CHALLENGERS (Amazon MGM Studios) Zendaya (No previous nominations; 27-years-old)
Role: Tashi Donaldson, a prodigy tennis player who becomes embroiled in a throuple with two other hot shots.
Yes: She's having a helluva 2024, dominating springtime with
Dune: Part Two and
Challengers. She gets to be complicated, driven and highly physical in a star vehicle that worships the ground she walks on. Glowing reviews and an adult film that makes great use of her star power.
No: Early release, and credit to her is heavily balanced with Faist and O'Connor (much to the movie's artistic benefit). Can she weather months of competition and short memories?
Maybe So: When you've reached the level of superstardom that Zendaya has, sometimes the Academy wants to welcome you to the club at the first opportunity. When your vehicle is this good, admiration and affection can grow instead of recede over the year.
EMMANUELLE (Neon) Noémie Merlant (No previous nominations; 35-years-old)
Role: Emmanuelle, a young woman following her muse through a series of erotic adventures.
Yes: Merlant is a star in France and is recognizable to Hollywood thanks to her performance in
Portrait of a Lady on Fire. She's pairing up with the promising Audrey Diwan. She could have a similar trajectory as Sandra Hüller last year as a respected European actor getting their crossover moment.
No: A "series of erotic adventures" isn't as dramatically potent as "did this mercurial author murder her husband?", you know what I mean? The movie might be a tough sell to Hollywood, even if it's critically respected.
Maybe So: The film isn't playing at Cannes, but if it makes a splash during the fall festivals then she could be in play with an increasingly international Academy.
THE FIRE INSIDE (Amazon MGM Studios) Ryan Destiny (No previous nominations; 29-years-old)
Role: Claressa 'T-Rex' Shields, a boxer from Flint, Michigan who trained to become the first woman in her country's history to win an Olympic gold medal in the sport.
Yes: Best known as one of the stars of the Fox series
Star, Destiny could be one of the big breakouts of the year. A physically demanding portrayal of a real-life sports star in an inspirational true story could slingshot her into stardom, capped off with an Oscar nomination.
No: She's not particularly well-known. Directorial debuts by cinematographers have a cursed history. The rumored release date is in August -- it might be a pure commercial play.
Maybe So: Even if the movie isn't in the awards conversation, it could go a long way in elevating her for future consideration.
HARD TRUTHS (Bleecker Street Media) Marianne Jean-Baptiste (One previous nominations; 57-years-old)
Role: Unspecified, but presumably the focus of the movie's exploration of the contemporary world.
Yes: Reuniting with Leigh since their fruitful collaboration on
Secrets & Lies, which nabbed her an Oscar nomination. It'd be great if they make magic again and are rewarded for it.
No: Bleecker Street is a minor league campaigner. It's been nearly 30 years since she was nominated and her profile has quieted considerably. Mike Leigh hasn't directed anyone to an Oscar nomination since
Vera Drake two decades ago.
Maybe So: The BAFTA constituency could make a huge difference if they throw their weight behind her and the film.
HEDDA (No Distributor) Tessa Thompson (No previous nominations; 40-years-old)
Role: Hedda Gabler, newly married and bored with both her marriage and life, seeks to influence a human fate for the first time.
Yes: One of the more exciting actors of her generation, she's spent the past decade doing a mix of commercial projects and small indies.
Passing was a promising step towards the awards conversation, but she hasn't been playing in that arena up until now. How about a Henrik Ibsen adaptation, reuniting with her
Little Woods director Nia DaCosta? That could do the trick.
No: Will the movie even come out this year? Even if it plays in the fall festivals, it might get pocketed for 2025. Play adaptations are often stagey; could this be written off as a neat creative exercise rather than the real deal?
Maybe So: The material is indisputably dramatic and weighty. DaCosta could be approaching this with fire in her belly after the reportedly frustrating experience on
The Marvels. If the movie is arresting, she may have crafted a great awards vehicle for her star.
HERE (Sony Pictures) Robin Wright (No previous nominations; 58-years-old)
Role: Unspecified, but presumably the matriarch in a family story "capturing the human experience in its purest form."
Yes: Wright is one of the most prominent actors of her generation without an Oscar nod to her name. She became an Emmy mainstay with
House of Cards. Maybe reuniting with her
Forrest Gump director and co-star could finally get her into the Academy club?
No: Zemeckis' output has skewed more towards "disaster" than "hit" for a while now. The pretentious log line doesn't bode well for this being a well-considered return to form.
Maybe So: If this actually is a return to form for Zemeckis and a great spotlight for Wright, the narrative of her being the odd one out on
Gump's success can only help her case.
HIS THREE DAUGHTERS (Netflix) Natasha Lyonne (No previous nominations; 45-years-old)
Role: Rachel, a dutiful daughter who reunites with her fractious sisters when their father becomes terminally ill.
Yes: Lyonne's graduated to the status of national treasure over the past decade and she's gotten career-best notices for this critical hit from last year's fall festivals. Netflix is a great backer for nabbing an acting nomination. The film's overall strong acclaim only helps her.
No: She shares the limelight with Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Olsen. Will they even campaign her lead, or try their luck with the supporting category instead? Industry insiders saw this performance months ago; will the appeal endure when new and shinier contenders materialize?
Maybe So: The Netflix effect cannot be underestimated. Even if the film doesn't become a package contender, her performance will be seen by many and that can make all the difference.
JANET PLANET (A24) Julianne Nicholson (No previous nominations; 52-years-old)
Role: Janet, a spirited mother who we see through the adoring eyes of her codependent daughter.
Yes: Rapturous reviews from last year's fall festivals with career-best notices for Nicholson. A24 is a savvy distributor and Nicholson's Emmy win for her turn in
Mare of Easttown has upped her profile.
No: Summer release date. It's a small film, and Nicholson is one of those hard-working actors who can be easily taken for granted amid a field of showy turns.
Maybe So: If critics rally around Nicholson and keep her in the conversation through awards season, this could be the indie-performance-that-could.
JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX (Warner Bros.) Lady Gaga (One previous nominations; 38-years-old)
Role: Harley Quinn, an institutionalized rebel who takes a shine to Arthur 'Joker' Fleck, embarking on a bad romance together.
Yes: Her casting perked up the ears of people who didn't even like the first installment. Gaga starring in anything is an event, and this sequel is a musical -- playing exactly to her strengths. Going toe to toe with Phoenix in his Oscar-winning role will leverage her star power in spades. If she steals the movie from him, watch out.
No: Gaga was accepted by the Academy with a grounded performance in
A Star is Born -- less so with high camp like
House of Gucci. She was pointedly ignored for the latter even though her precursor run pointed towards her being a frontrunner. Does the Academy plan on being rude to her going forward, rejecting her theatrical turns and really making her work for it?
Maybe So: The movie's going to be a huge hit, and you just know she'll be recording an original song. If she's a viable nominee, she feels like a threat for the win.
KINDS OF KINDNESS (Searchlight Pictures) Emma Stone (Two previous wins and two nominations; 35-years-old)
Role: Multiple roles across three different stories, but the most prominent appears to be a woman searching for the messiah of a new religious movement.
Yes: Stone has graduated into a rarefied league that few stars ever get to touch. She's fresh off a second Oscar and reuniting with Lanthimos, striking while the iron is hot.
No: Anthology films don't lend themselves to roles that voters can glom onto. Even if she brings the house down, this might be viewed more as an exercise than an achievement,
Maybe So: Stone is arguably growing into the Meryl Streep of her generation. We may have entered a new era where the Academy makes room for her no matter how unconventional the project.
THE LAST SHOWGIRL (No distributor) Pamela Anderson (No previous nominations; 56-years-old)
Role: A fifty-something showgirl who must reassess her life after her Vegas gig closes up shop.
Yes: Anderson has always had higher artistic aspirations than her career has afforded her. Gia Coppola has exhibited talent before, and this metatextual indie vehicle could be an ideal showcase for the 90s sex symbol's chops.
No: Anderson has never been taken seriously as an actor before, and she comes with a lot of baggage. Even in an optimistic scenario, the movie might be received as a solid showcase but nothing revelatory.
Maybe So: If the film makes a splash at the festivals, Anderson's narrative could be irresistible on the campaign trail. It would certainly make for one of the more triumphant stories of the season.
MARIA (No Distributor) Angelina Jolie (One previous win and one nomination; 48-years-old)
Role: Maria Callas, a legendary opera singer facing the end of her life as her chronic condition worsens.
Yes: Jolie is one of those movie stars where you feel she'd have a lot more nominations under her belt if she just tackled awards-friendly projects more often. She's playing a famous icon and working with Pablo Larraín, who's been on a hot streak with getting leading ladies nominated in biopic roles.
No: Larraín's frosty star biopics have been received more and more coldly with each new installment. Kristen Stewart's nod for
Spencer was a squeaker. Streaks are made to be broken, and this one's been on an increasingly strained thread.
Maybe So: Jolie hasn't put herself out there in this arena for a while now; the sheer novelty of her starring in something this ambitious again will draw a lot of attention.
MOTHER MARY (A24) Anne Hathaway (One previous win and one nomination; 41-years-old)
Role: Not entirely clear, but either the fashion designer or pop star in the film's central relationship.
Yes: Hathaway's been generating some admiring press for sizzling up the (small) screen with her return to romantic comedy in
The Idea of You. She's pairing up with David Lowery, who's quietly been one of the best American filmmakers out there. Could this glitzy vehicle be her return to the awards conversation?
No: Is she even the lead role, or will the film tilt more towards Michaela Coel? Lowery's got an admirable body of work, but he hasn't broken through with the Oscars yet.
Maybe So: Hathaway inexplicably became a punching bag for the internet after her 2013 win for
Les Miz, but she's reemerged with no fucks to give towards the haters. She may be entering a resilient new era of being taken seriously again.
NIGHTBITCH (Searchlight Pictures) Amy Adams (Six previous nominations; 49-years-old)
Role: A dissatisfied stay-at-home mom who begins to worry she might be turning into a canine beast.
Yes: Adams is right alongside Bradley Cooper as the most recognized actor of her generation without ever taking home an Oscar trophy. She is glaringly overdue, and who better than the massively talented Marielle Heller to give her the star vehicle to finally propel her to long-awaited victory?
No: The premise is aggressively strange. Adams is beloved, but her profile's been severely degraded after a series of disastrous choices. Is a whacko body horror movie going to pull her out of her career rut?
Maybe So: This project was initially slated to go directly to Hulu, but Searchlight Pictures has since had an about-face and announced it will have a theatrical run. That indicates confidence, and you couldn't ask for a better distributor in the awards race.
PARTHENOPE (A24) Celeste Dalla Porta (No previous nominations; 26-years-old)
Role: Parthenope, a woman born of the sea who looks for love in 1950s Naples.
Yes: You could do a lot worse than making your theatrical debut starring in a Paolo Sorrentino picture. Dalla Porta is brand new, acting in some Italian TV before being cast in the titular role of the auteur's new feature. If the film is a Cannes sensation and Oscar breakout for Sorrentino, you'd imagine that the Parthenope of
Parthenope would partake in the spoils.
No: She's completely unknown, and Sorrentino has yet to hit with the Academy outside of the International Feature category. Will this be an actual acting showcase, or will she be relegated to being just the sensual muse of this odyssey?
Maybe So: If
Parthenope hits with the increasingly international Academy, she could be swept up along with the ride. Every year has a couple unknowns who are catapulted to the Oscar spotlight.
THE ROOM NEXT DOOR (Sony Pictures Classics) Tilda Swinton (One previous win; 63-years-old)
Role: Martha, a long-suffering daughter who hits an unbridgeable impasse with her mother after a misunderstanding.
Yes: The great Tilda Swinton teaming up with the legendary Pedro Almodóvar for his feature-length English debut. It has the potential to be dramatically rich and a spotlight of her talents.
No: Will the movie even be out this year? Swinton is a legend, but she hasn't been recognized by the Academy since her win for
Michael Clayton despite a string of great performances. Was it just a passing fancy that can't be replicated?
Maybe So: The pedigree alone will be catnip for a savvy campaigner like Sony Pictures Classics.
THE SUMMER BOOK (No Distributor) Glenn Close (Eight previous nominations; 77-years-old)
Role: A grandmother vacationing with her granddaughter on a Finland isle, where they bond over life and death.
Yes: Close probably has the strongest "overdue" narrative out of any living actor, and this is a ripe role from a well-received book. The existentialism of her role only compounds how little time the Academy has left to finally recognize her.
No: Will the film be out this year? Director Charlie McDowell's track record hasn't been strong enough to give a high degree of confidence for this adaptation.
Maybe So: Admit it: Close made a lot of new fans by being a great sport and twerking to "Da Butt" at the 2021 Oscars. She will always be someone to root for.
THELMA (Magnolia Pictures) June Squibb (One previous nominations; 94-years-old)
Role: A nonagenarian who seeks vengeance when she's robbed by a phone scammer.
Yes: Squibb is probably the most beloved actor in their 90s working today, and this Sundance hit is a great showcase for her charms.
No: The movie is a
broad comedy and a summer release. Magnolia Pictures is a minor league campaigner. This is plainly a commercial play.
Maybe So: There's something beautiful about Squibb starring in a gonzo action movie at her age. She'd be the oldest nominee ever by a considerable margin if she were recognized -- that's a juicy narrative.

2024.05.06 00:25 EliteGreyIT Darcy Ode Butkus: Baker Acted Police Report Updated 6/6/17
| Imagine that it’s 11 pm in the evening and your phone rings, you answer and it’s God…. On April 13th, 2013, Darcy Ode Butkus called 911 telling them she was God. The police showed up at the house and met with Arnold Butkus who stated,”that his wife Darcel Butkus had not been to sleep since April 9th, 2013. Due to the lack of sleep she is now behaving in a delusional manner”. Arnold Butkus then stated,”he didn’t know when she last showered or consumed food. He also stated that he last observed her this morning in her bedroom acting delusional and arguing with God over the things that he (God) wants her to do”. At this point the officer and Arnold Butkus walk in to Darcy Butkus’s room where they find her naked (and pacing back and forth) screaming out loud,”She does not want to do it”! The Officer then stated, “Once Darcel observed me, she turned to me and screamed,”No, I am not going to do that to her!” I asked Darcel if she would put clothing on since she called 911 at which time she said, “God wants me this way!” Arnold then grabbed Darcel and began putting clothes on her. Darcel continued screaming while chanting, “I am God and I am going to do it!” When I asked her what she was going to do she turned to me and said, “God wants me to!” The officer stated, “Based on Darcel’s delusional thoughts, behaviors, and self neglect I explained that I was going to take her to Memorial East Hospital for a psychological evaluation.” Darcel ended up agreeing with the cop that she had been neglecting herself and without an evaluation she was likely to hurt herself and others. The cop then secured Darcy Ode Butkus into the patrol vehicle and transported her to the hospital. While enroute to the hospital Darcel continued to scream out loud that, “God was telling her to do things that would change the world.” And that my friends is how you get Baker Acted as successfully done by the one and only Darcy Ode Butkus! Please Note: This is a public record it was obtained from the Davie Police Department One reason we are sharing her incident is because she has been going after people dealing with mental illness and making fun of them. Thinking it’s her right to judge them. One of those people is David Edward. Darcy Ode Butkus volunteered for Death Row Dogs of Florida. She was fired from her volunteer position then she went on a slanderous tour of bad mouthing with false allegations. So much so she was asked to stop. Darcy Ode Butkus didn’t stop ended up getting sued (surprise surprise) lost and ended up with a gag order and she can’t mention the rescue at all. Then she went on to volunteer for Dezzy’s Second Chance Rescue where yet again she was fired from her volunteer position because of her erratic behavior at a meeting on April 9th 2015, where she was at a meeting in a public venue and started beating the table and chanting. She then went on another smear campaign with false allegations slandering Dezzy’s Second Chance Rescue. In May of 2015, 100 + Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida was called by Sylvia Love. Her father had gone to hospice and they needed to figure out what to do with his pets. He had 13 dogs total, all but 1 lived outside. Taco was a terrier mix that lived inside the house with his owner and the rescue had agreed to take him in. The rescue started a fund-raiser to make sure they had funds in place for his vetting and medical care. It was set up for the volunteers to go to the property and wait outside the gate, the dogs on the property were not used to visitors. The son would bring Taco out to the volunteers and surrender him to the rescue. When the volunteers showed up one of the volunteers, Sarah Martin, decided instead waiting outside of the gate like she was instructed to do she was going to open the gate and go inside. Once she did she then ended up getting attacked by some of the dogs on the property. The other volunteer had to go in and grab dogs off of Sarah drag her to safety with the help of the son who had to let go of Taco. Taco ran off to go hide. Once they got Sarah to safety she called the founder of the Rescue, Amy Roman-Daniello, yelling into the phone that she got bit. The other volunteer got on the phone and explained that Sarah opened the gate and trespassed after she was told not to, and that they needed to get her to the hospital. Once Sarah was in the hospital Amy the Founder reached out to Sarah’s mom Cheryl Martin to see how she was doing. Her mother stated via text, “that she was going to put her daughter’s head through a wall for not listening and trespassing onto the property when told not to”. Animal Control then came to the hospital room of Sarah and the volunteer who had helped get her out safely even admitted there was no way they could identify the dogs. Sarah randomly pointed out 5 dogs. Amy was called and by the time she was told and reached Sylvia it was too late. Animal Control had come, in Darted the dogs, and took them away with a catch pole. The dogs were quarantined in the bite unit area to await their fate. Meanwhile no one had seen Taco. They started looking for him, he was found underneath the truck not a mark on him. He had died from a heart attack due to all of the stress from the trespassing incident. So now the initial animal that they came to save had lost his life and possibly 5 more were going to lose theirs because one person couldn’t follow directions. Fast forward Sarah got released from the hospital and wasn’t happy because she wasn’t getting the attention she so thought she deserved. After trespassing and pointing out 5 random dogs who would now possibly lose their lives and causing Taco to lose his by having a heart attack. She called a news station and started bashing the rescue. This whole time Amy is trying to clean up the mess Sarah created by saving these dogs which she did. Amy was able to save the dogs and get them released to the rescue. They used the funds originally meant for Taco and instead used them for the 5 plus the additional animals they took. They ended getting all the animals socialized & medically healthy. In the end all the animals went to great families. These are just a few of the animals from the incident Amy and her Crew saved. Now this is where Darcy Ode Butkus comes in, she met up with Sarah Martin when the media ran her story. And, she helped the Martins slander 100 + Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida & Amy. After the incident with Sarah there was another incident where an owner called the rescue and requested that Amy and her crew come out to his property to trap and remove some puppies because they were going to bulldoze and develop the land. Darcy took pictures of Amy and her crew catching the puppies and the staff going over the fence with no trespassing signs posted. She then posted the pictures saying 100 + had gone on the property without the owner’s permission and stolen the dogs. Which simply was not true the owner of the property was present some of the time but, the Rescue was there for over a week catching the feral dogs 24/7. At the Mangrove property there were over 15 feral dogs and puppies combined saved by 100 + Abandoned dogs of Everglades Florida. All videos were posted on their Facebook page. The picture below was from when Amy Roman- Daniello and her team went to an abandoned crack house where bodies of dead dogs were found, they there were some live and abandoned dogs on the property that they caught and saved. If Darcy has an issue with Rescues doing their job and “RESCUING” animals from situations that could possibly cost them their lives then she needs to seriously rethink why she is in this. Darcy you can’t call yourself an animal lover and bash a rescue for stepping up and doing the right thing then praise another when they do the same. It’s called being a HYPOCRITE! Darcy Ode Butkus goes out of her way to maliciously make up false accusations and lies to hurt and cause harm to the reputation of good rescues and good advocates. Now has she gone after actual bad rescues yes but, there have been quite a few times where she hasn’t. When she made the false allegations with the Department of Agriculture against Amy Roman-Dinello, the founder of 100+, she started posting and passing around financial records misleading everyone. Darcy stated the financial records belonged to the rescue. They had personal charges on the records belonging to Amy. What Darcy didn’t tell people was those were Amy’s personal financial records that were submitted as part of the investigation because she put charges on her personal credit card for the rescue, such as vet bills. She had to submit the proof in order to show why she was able to reimburse herself for those charges. 100 + Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida was exonerated after a 20 month extensive investigation by the department of agriculture. Settlement including amending taxes from the beginning stages of their organization along with a $5,000.00 administrative fine. Again, if you look closely these are her PERSONAL CREDIT CARD STATEMENTS!! Darcy’s most recent attack has been on a gentleman by the name of David Edwards. He was arrested on animal cruelty charges due to his house having high ammonia levels from the animals urinating in the house and it soaking into the wood floors. lol Darcy has criticized his mental status, as well as other things. David is well known in the community. He has helped get funding for a lot of Spay and Neuters. I am not defending the condition of his house by any means but, what I am defending is him. Not one person that knows Dave has ever said a bad word about him. He simply got in over his head. Yes the ammonia was high in his house and his floors need to be replaced but, his dogs were vetted, healthy, and cared for. What I find alarming is a woman who herself had a psychological episode where the cops had to be called would not have a bit more empathy and compassion for others with, let’s say, depression. How about we discuss that event shall we? I promise you the police report is way more interesting. I don’t even do it justice. Darcy I hope you are mortified honestly because you judged David and others about their mental health or called them psychos, yet here you had a mental break down. How dare you judge someone else like that or even make fun of them for suffering from a mental illness, it’s not funny and it’s not a joke. You should be positively ashamed of yourself and your actions. I think what makes it even worse is the fact Darcy Ode Butkus uses Dog Rescue The Good The Bad The Ugly to pass lies and misleading information about the subjects she reports on. At least if you are going to write on a subject be honest. Use actual evidence that supports your statements. You instead alter data to fit your facts, which is illegal and unethical. You will probably whine that the police report got released and I could act like I cared but, we both know that I would be lying. Truth is I don’t care for you. I could have poked fun about it, I didn’t. I will say this, how you treat others is what you get back. In other words, keep doing what you are doing and we will keep giving it to you ten fold. FYI the reason I asked you about the Animal Cruelty Bill is because I know you lied. The bill was never signed, if you had paid attention it didn’t pass. Next time at least have enough tact and class to come up with a plausible lie. Another thing what kind of tacky fool are you? Posting your resume on LinkedIn with a picture of you drinking. Have you lost your damn mind or did all those Botox shots go to your head? You were never a Private Investigator or Law Enforcement. Misrepresenting yourself as such is illegal. submitted by EliteGreyIT to PetRescueExposed [link] [comments] |

2024.05.03 13:58 Trifle_Intrepid In Response To Recent Events.
You know, I got into it awhile ago with some people, who had the attitude that if something was happening, or there was an investigation, it wasn't anyone elses business.
If anything has been proven to be true, that is incorrect at best, and nefarious at its worst. This recent fellow who was arrested on PEI, shot another man dead, in what seems to be a random altercation.
Something that seems important, that was left out of recent reporting;
A testimonial from the family of Shamar Powell-Flowers, who was involved with an altercation with "several" people, who was shot and left to die.
"Shamar loved. He loved food, which he’d eat for three people. He loved his siblings (four brothers, one sister) and the nieces and nephews they gave him,” read the statement.
“He loved his mom, whom he cared for; his Arsenal Football Club, which he lived for; his dear dog Rocco, who, nine months into this unthinkable nightmare, continues to grieve (Did you know dogs grieve? We didn’t but do now.). Shamar loved his friends, family, neighbours, strangers. He loved helping, giving, celebrating, serving. He loved working, learning, trying, achieving.
“Shamar was a remarkable light. He was a brave, loyal, ambitious, highly intelligent, and hardworking construction engineer, a generous and kind man with a smile that lit up the universe. Shamar loved living, and we loved Shamar, as did so many others who lived and worked alongside him, who learned from him, were helped by him, enriched by him, lifted up by him, inspired by him. He was a guardian angel and guiding star who was always trying to save others. How cruel it is that this loving and beloved man, our Shamar, could not be saved himself, and was left to die alone."
https://beachmetro.com/2024/04/23/man-sought-in-danforth-and-carlaw-shooting-death-last-july-named-canada-most-wanted-fugitive-reward-of-100000-posted/
So the man accused in this, fled and he came to PEI. He wouldn't go where it was obvious to look for him, but from the families plea, it seems to suggest people KNEW where he was, or had gone to. As in, this person may have been involved in organized crime, and until the bounty was up to a significant amount, people stayed silent out of fear. (my speculation)
The people who run Canada's most wanted, or this Bolo program, it's good for you to put up money to catch criminals, but I never even heard of this program. Another big part of their mission is awareness, perhaps they could rethink on how to get the message out.
It should be noted, there are many criminals who fuck up in Ontario and find their way here. Remember the guy from BC, with half his face tattoo'd who was thrown in jail for jumping up and down on cars?
He's probably due to be out soon, just a heads up.
Anyway, the broader message is, it doesn't matter if it is your community, or YOUR family, you want justice done properly, because we had a murder among us all none the wiser. Not to say there aren't others. The people saying it wasn't smart to hide here, are dumb, or are misdirecting. It's smart to go where people won't look for you, and if you keep your head down, you won't be found. They're gasliting.
These people are career criminals, they make a living at it, it's central to their idenity oftentimes as a person and instead of being reformed, they are released back out onto us, for us to suffer at a corrupt system and these evil people. Why do innocent people bear the burnt of this? People who've never commited a crime are at the mercy of people who don't care, feel zero remorse. You don't have mercy for people that possess none for others.
There is another example I'd like to parallel this with, and this was an Islander woman who was murdered in BC a few years ago. Now I say this with as emphasis on respect as I can, I'm not looking to upset anyone by referencing this, that isn't the intent. All the things here are reported, they all just weren't reported here locally. They were in BC though.
And honestly, when I heard what was done to her, it really affected me. I have thought about this woman now and then, years on, and the lengths to which she, and her family have suffered. We all know women who are suffering at the hands of abusive men.
She was a support worker in BC, 27 years old,
she was found 2021. The man who murdered her, was caught a couple years later. He was an Ex-boyfriend, who ended her life. He had prior violent charges, but wasn't held in prison long, and a year or so later, her life was taken. This man is a monster, and has several charges, including the manslaughter charge before the court right now. (IMO it should have been murder, from my impression)
I'd encourage ppl, if they're interested to see what I think is a miscarriage of justice, read below.
https://www.nanaimobulletin.com/news/warrants-issued-after-nanaimo-man-with-forcible-confinement-charges-breaches-conditions-1104226 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/prince-edward-island/pei-bc-death-amy-watts-manslaughter-charge-1.6717179 https://www.nanaimobulletin.com/local-news/nanaimo-man-accused-of-manslaughter-denied-appeal-of-assault-sentence-7350618
The whole story is there, in those three links. And as you read it becomes more disturbing, but to think a independent news outlet in BC, is doing better depth reporting than our outlets.
These are two people, one from PEI, one from Toronto, who both had their lives cut short. They were both young. They were both reputable, very good, and kind people. The people that took their lives, we're lifelong criminals, who did not want to reform and fit into our society.
They say justice delayed, is justice denied.
Recently it's just been more justice denied, IMO.
someone had said, there were three people sitting in sleepy hollow for murder right now, you know, people who do know, know there should be a few more sitting in there.
Whether it's a crime in Toronto, Charlottetown, or Halifax, if justice isn't done, if it's skewed in favour of these people, who have signifcant influence,
we will never truely live in a free and safe society.
This is all in response to those people, who think we should "mind our own business", and if it "didn't happen to you, or someone you know, butt out."
This is my extended counter argument, to people being dismissive about something I see as a real, real big problem.
The irony is people go on about how PEI is a nosy place, it may be in a sense but people don't do anything about the things they know. Those nosy people are often nosy for the sake of it. I have a lot of empathy, I don't go around asking too many questions, because the truth of what happens isn't great. I don't need to ask people, if they want to share they will. And if they share too much I often try to make them aware of that too. I don't have many opportunities to talk to anybody, so there is a lot of time for me to observe these things.
When people will have to leave the Island to go to school, or work elsewhere, wherever else in Canada you want it so that those communities aren't corrupt, or full of crime either. That maybe even if the police and or lawyers are corrupt, hopefully it isn't to the point of them being soft on criminals like this, or looking the other way when someone you know is harmed.
Cause if your family is that far away, you're relying on good people to do the right thing for your loved ones, as you can't be there.
That is supposing there are anymore good people left in this world.
That's the basic idea of what a functioning community is, there are times we involve ourselves, or do pipe up and say something, because god help you if you aren't there, you want someone there to do it when you can't. Even better to prevent something terrible, than have to worry about adjudicating the aftermath fairly. You can't disrupt these things through a computer monitor or phone, that takes something else entirely.
If you thought PEI was safe, you were wrong. Not from these influences, not from these criminals. Not in the slightest.
Maybe it's safer, right now as opposed to BC for example, but they've already killed most of their customers. They're going to start looking for replacement candidates, and they're coming east. They already have.
People often parrot this is common sense thinking and "we already know", but I don't see much of it in action.
I would have said something as much at the time, but every time my skates hit the ice here recently, I've been gagged, tied up and thrown back into the penalty box.
(temporary ban on reddit) I sometimes make some spicy remarks, but am often careful, recently I've had a 3 day ban, and a 10 day ban. So, I guess I can't really talk anymore without risking my account, so I'll be taking an extended break anyway.
We need to adjust how we think about these things, and how they're reported. You can see the difference in tone, from the articles I linked above. You don't need to be educated to see the contrast. Maybe people need to be held more accountable, the difference is making sure enough people are aware of the wrong being done.

2024.05.03 04:01 katanddog 2,000 Names (and their meanings) For Your Baby Boy found from a Vintage Mennen Company Booklet
My mom passed along this booklet that belonged to my grandmother when we were expecting. Figured I would share it here before discarding it. The Girl Name list is already
posted 😊 Enjoy!
WHAT'S IN A NAME
Don't let the meanings concern you. Think instead of how the name will fit the child, when the child is grown, or known. Choose the name with care. It's very important to your baby-all through life. Here are some guides: - Say each name aloud, along with your own family name, to check rhythm and sound. - Use soft first names with sharp-sounding family names. - Use multi-syllable first names with short family names. - Avoid using a first name that ends with the same sound that starts the last name, such as "Jane Nevins." - Avoid "famous combinations" such as "Abraham" and "Lincoln." - Watch out for initials that spell out familiar letters, like “S. O. S”

2024.05.03 00:17 Ur_Anemone My ex was cheating with EIGHTY women - how you can see if your partner is lying
| Just 🤦♀️ CAUGHT IN THE NET My love rat ex was cheating on me with EIGHTY other women – how you can find out if your partner is a lying lothario Make sure to always invoke Clare's Law when dating strangers LYING lotharios beware! Fib on your dating profile and a secret network of women will be sure to find you out. Relationship-seekers are digging the dirt on potential suitors through a web of private, female-only Facebook groups called Are we Dating The Same Guy? (AWDTSG). They use the pages to find out if other members have been up close and personal with men they have met on apps including Tinder, Bumble and Hinge — as well as check for romance red flags. In fact, some fellas have had their pics and details shared so many times on AWDTSG, they have become notorious. It comes as recent figures showed 61 per cent of men use singles sites in the UK, compared to 39 per cent of women. Group member Paige Appleby, 29, from Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, was horrified when suspicions that her ex had been fooling around were confirmed on AWDTSG. The marketing manager, who had been seeing Dave, 31, from Putney, South West London, for three months, popped in his details and was faced with replies from 80 other women revealing they had been dating or in touch with him, too. I saw his face in a photo from when we were on holiday. The post — from someone else – said “Girls, I am dating this guy”. Women from the UK and the US had been sleeping with him at the same time as me. - Paige Paige says: “I joined AWDTSG after ending things with Dave. Things had been going well between us. We met online, he’d met my family and we’d gone on holiday. “But then I caught him on Instagram with another girl. He insisted she was his sister, but a closer look at social media suggested they had also been together. “My friend said I should search for him in the group and I thought, ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’. “Then I saw his face in a photo I’d taken when we’d been away together on holiday.” Recalling how another member was asking about Dave, Paige said: “The post, from someone else, said, ‘Girls, I am dating this guy — is there any tea? (gossip)’. And I couldn’t keep up with the responses. “There were women from all over the UK, even America, who’d been unknowingly dating him and sleeping with him — mostly around the same time. “He’d spun us all different lines and fake excuses and sold us all the dream of being the ideal boyfriend. “He was sleeping with us without protection and there were even pregnancies. He was playing with our feelings. It was so messed up.” Paige said one other girl’s story sounded very familiar, with accounts of Dave lovebombing her at the start, painting himself as a genuine guy who wanted to settle down with “The One”, and claiming he “never got female attention”. But she added: “The comments showed that wasn’t the case. “We all looked similar, too, so he clearly had a type. It was a lot to deal with.” Paige told how Dave’s picture has since become a running joke on the AWDTSG pages, with comments including: “I see this man more than my own family.” And she added: “It is both hilarious and frustrating knowing that girls are still being blindsided by him. Thanks to AWDTSG, I also discovered a so-called match was catfishing me as well as three other girls in the group.” The romeo con artist used a fake profile and someone else’s photos to chat up women. “The man we believed we were speaking to was married with children and obviously went by a different name,” Paige explains. “Some girls reached out to the genuine person in the images, who confirmed he has never had a dating app profile. His photos had been stolen.” Alongside general relationship advice and weeding out lies, other AWDTSG stories are more sinister, with women warning of men who may be abusers, scammers or fraudsters. Invoking Clare’s Law — the right to know if your partner has an abusive past — is always recommended in this instance or if anyone feels they may be in danger. For Amy, 49, a solicitor from Telford, Shrops, the group was a way to warn others about Steve, who made off with her life savings of £57,000 and two cars during a three-year “romance”. ‘He ruined my life, I feel so violated' Amy, whose name has been changed as cops probe her case, says: “He ruined my life and took my emotional and financial security. I feel so violated. “I posted what happened and his photo in the AWDTSG groups as a way to try to prevent him from doing the same to someone else. If it stops another woman giving him any money, it’s worth it.” Anna Rowe, 51, co-founder of lovesaid.org, a support group that backs defrauded daters, believes the forums are useful. The expert, who has been a victim of a romance scammer herself, says: “From exposing Jack the lads to more serious situations, I think the AWDTSG groups are brilliant and paramount for safety. “And it can work both ways. Some posts ask for information and a woman will say, ‘I know this guy, he’s lovely’.” Paige says: “The groups help girls vet the wrong ’uns and have changed the way I date. I feel sorry for whoever I settle down with because he will be called out on every suspicious action and may find himself being posted.” She added: “I still believe there are good ones out there. I’ve started seeing someone I met in a bar. Luckily, nothing has come up about him in the group.” submitted by Ur_Anemone to afterAWDTSG [link] [comments] |
