Hi there! I love where I live, but am moving to Danville for a career change. San Ramon appears fairly safe and clean, and am considering it for my sons. I am moving my boys into their own apartment for the first time. They are really easy going, respectful, and pretty low key. Both are mixed (Latin and African American). One will be a full time college student, and the other is a young adult working most days. They aren’t super social, but I know my youngest loves outings in nature. Where we currently live, it’s really safe, clean, slow moving, no traffic, and tons of options for hikes, mountain biking, beach bumming and such. I’d love to know some options nearby that might interest us for outings. Our area is primarily blonde hair and blue eyed, so we are looking forward to seeing more color, diversity, and having so many more options for good food. If anyone has any input or advice or tips on settling into San Ramon, apartments or a particular area good for searching, social scene, food, or anything else, I’d love some insight! I’d also like to know if leaving a vehicle at the bart station is safe. I had to learn the hard way in SF and Oakland. lol

I am native born, over 50, not among the unlucky folks born poor.
I've spent time over the last 7 months looking into stats for the city, and it just make me sad, angry, even a bit infuriated. WE ALL SHOULD BE.
In a society working like it should, people with a lower quality of life can move up. Education is life, or some form of that. Here? People seem stuck. The masses of family trees that are poor or working class don't seem to get to a form of middle class. And so we have this daily chaos mess suffering malaise.
There is some amount of trying going on. The small academies are relatively young. On a website ( Niche ) with information on schools, there are anonymous students who are trying. I have no clear idea what percentage of people who need to care, are.
Where are the masses of savior-kids? Large amounts of kids raised poor, but with some amount of dignity, discipline, and focus, trying to pull their families into a better life? For every one of those, there seem untold amounts that aren't prepared to succeed.
The American history classes mentioned segregation. As a silly teenager I figured since it was no longer basic policy the black and Latino kids will do better in school now..........right?

That's lot of people who don't seem decently prepared to stand on their feet.
Are we hoping that smarter kids of the city will be future leaders, in whatever field they choose? The % of kids who exceed state standards for English is about 14%; for math it's about 12%. For both areas the numbers for specific grade levels get worse as the grade levels go up. The 11th graders who exceed state math standards is under 4%.
The high schools have a graduation rate running around 76 or 82%. So that's around 500 old teenagers ( young adults ) being plopped into the city society every year without a high school diploma. On top of the massive pile of people who don't have steady lives.
The city isn't completely poor. And of course the non-poor kids do better than the poor ones. So if some school of non-poor kids is at 65 or 75% passing, some poor school is a good bit under a city average of 33 or 25.

In the overall Westlake Middle test results for 2023, 13.94% of students met or exceeded the state standard in English, while 86.06% did not, a change of -5.72% from 2022. In math, 7.97% of students met or exceeded the state standard, with 92.03% not meeting it: a change of 0.21% from 2022.

For a couple grade levels, the amount of kids exceeding the state standard in a discipline is small enough that it registers as a 0.0

This is the first time we’ve done this kind of party for a large group, and the portion planning was one of the challenges. Of course we erred on having too much rather than running out. Sharing. Some notes here in case anyone is planning something similar.

Pre-Marinated Meats: Mi Tierra (San Pablo Ave, Berkeley).
I used to use Cardenas (High St, Oakland) all the time, but we did a dry run and the meats and salsas were disappointing. Someone suggested Mi Tierra, and meats and salsas there were both much better, both in appearance and taste.
Pre-marinated meats: 10lbs carne asada 10lbs al pastor 10lbs pollo fajitas (I chopped the pieces into smaller chunks for tacos)
This was too much meat for this crowd. 8lbs of each meat would be perfect with few leftovers. Carne was the most popular, followed by pollo, then al pastor.
Salsas: Red- bought 5 pints ($6/each), which was too much. 3 would have been plenty. Avocado-salsa- bought 5 pints ($6/each), which was too much. 3 would have been plenty.
Tortillas- bought 4 large bags of the 6” corn tortillas ($6/each), which was too much. I made 2 bags and we had leftovers.
Total for meat, salsas, and tortillas (over bought by ~20%): $289
***I cooked all the meats and tortillas on a large flattop griddle (Camp Chef). I did the meats in 6 batches (half of each meat per batch), then did the tortillas.
In all, it took more than 90 mins to cook, and all was transferred to chafing dishes in half-size foil pans. Used three chafing dishes to get 6 spots. One each for: carne, al pastor, pollo, tortillas, rice, beans.

That was way too much for this crowd. If possible, I’d ask for half that amount and still probably have leftovers. Or chop them myself since it’s a smaller quantity than I thought.
Also got 1/2 tray of pico de gallo from there. It was way too much ($40). Would have been better off getting 2-3 pints from Mi Tierra for $5.50/pint.
5gal strawberry agua Fresca ($65). They give it to you in a plastic barrel dispenser with a spigot that you return later. We went through 4 gallons of it. It was very good.
Los Comales total, with tax and tip: $360. Could have done with about half of that.
Drinks: margaritas and Palomas. Palomas were the pre-made Cazadores Brand from Costco. First time trying them, and they were very well received. We went through 3x 1.5L bottles of it, served with grapefruit wedge garnish over ice.
Margaritas were made fresh with this recipe: Juice from 1x 3lb bag of limes from Costco (yield ~2cups) 1 bottle Cazadores reposado 2 cups contreau 1/4 cup agave syrup 1/4 cup orange juice Served over ice. Garnish with lime wheel and salted rim glass
We went through 3 batches of this. Could have probably used one more batch.
Lots of Pacificos, IPA, and wine.
15 pieces of tres leches cake from Market Hall. Pieces were large enough to cut in half, to yield 30 servings. Additional 30 pieces of Mexican wedding cookies. That was just about right.

Looking for advice on moving to SF. My commute would be from SF to inner east bay (about 45 min to Walnut Creek area) M-F, going opposite of traffic. Work hours are typically flexible but as of now I would be leaving SF around 7/7:30 am for work then get off usually around 2 or 3 pm-ish M-F, which looks like I'd be beating most of the traffic heading back into the city.
I've always wanted to live in SF as I am a young adult and like what SF has to offer (restaurants, bars, concerts, extracurriculars, etc.), I also have a lot of friends out there, but am worried I will hate my life with the commute. I've thought about the wear & tear on my car, as I would be driving (faster than BART), but the move wouldn't be permanent.
Any advice? Thoughts? Considering Berkeley & Oakland too, but truthfully would prefer SF. I'm also familiar with rent costs and can afford it, the only difficulty would be finding a place with a garage/parking (any advice with that helps too). Thank you!
EDIT: thank you for the BART recs. Unfortunately with where I’m looking @ living in the city + my work it’s actually faster to drive than to take BART.

Does anyone happen to know of any places in Oakland County/near Oakland County that have adult open lap swim? (preferably near Berkley).

Red building Kingdom daycare on Oakland rd. Just wanted to know if anyone's kids go here ? I walk by this place almost everyday and when the kids are outside they are always being screamed at like they are adults and I am talking toddlers 1-3 years old. :(

A few months ago, I mentioned how I’d like to see more and more young adults that come to this region to attend U of M to stick around when they graduate and not feel the need to bolt off to New York, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, etc. I spent the weekend at the Draft (excellent time, well done Detroit) and met a group of Michigan students. All of them were from somewhere else, I think the closest was from Louisville.
Anyways, 2 of them are already committed to staying here and the other 2 said they’d be very happy and want to try to stay in Southeast Michigan upon graduating next weekend if the jobs line up.
My point is, there is a lot of potential and growth in this part of the state. I think the nation saw a very positive showing in Downtown Detroit this weekend for the NFL Draft. It’s my hope and prayer that what transpired this weekend here can lead to big things in SE Michigan. Is it perfect? No. But if we can convince more and more graduates of UM, along with Oakland, Wayne State, and other nearby colleges that are not from here to give this region a chance in their post collegiate careers, I believe incredible changes and growth will follow. Look at what’s happened in Columbus thanks to OSU. If boondock Central Ohio can have the renaissance it’s having today, Southeast Michigan should be able to as well.
