The Landing Sight for Lehi’s Party Discovered

2024.05.19 19:29 Craig-Paxton The Landing Sight for Lehi’s Party Discovered

In a fascinating study, evidenced for a possible landing sight for Lehi in America has been discovered within easy travel distance to Palmyra, NY. If substantiated, it could add weight to an Atlantic migration, the controversial Solutrean Hypothesis, in addition to the traditional Siberian route. https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2024/05/19/first-americans-chesapeake-parsons-island/
The link is behind a pay wall. Here’s the article
PARSONS ISLAND, Md. — With the Chesapeake Bay sloshing at his knee-high boots, Darrin Lowery stood back and squinted at a 10-foot-tall bluff rising above a narrow strip of beach. To the untrained eye, this wall of sandy sediment is the unremarkable edge of a modest island southeast of the Bay Bridge. To Lowery, a coastal geologist, its crumbling layers put the island at the center of one of the most contentious battles in archaeology: when and how humans first made their way into the Americas. The story of the first Americans has long been a matter of public and scientific fascination, undergirded at times by vicious disagreements. The timeline of when people arrived has shifted earlier in grudging steps over the past century, and scientists today mostly agree people were in the Americas at least 15,000 years ago. Story continues below advertisement
Lowery’s site and others like it could revise the story again, pushing back the timeline earlier than most experts thought possible. In total, Lowery and a motley crew of collaborators have discovered 286 artifacts from the site on the island’s southwestern edge. The oldest, they reported, was embedded with charcoal dated to more than 22,000 years ago, a time when much of the continent would have been covered in ice sheets. If Lowery is right, Parsons Island could rewrite American prehistory, opening up a host of new puzzles: How did those people get here? How many waves of early migration were there? And are these mysterious people the ancestors of Native Americans?
Casts of tools found at Parsons Island are seen on display. Lowery and his team have unearthed 286 artifacts from the site so far. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) New claims of sites dated this far back face a wall of skepticism, rooted in legitimate scientific scrutiny and in the threat they pose to long-entrenched views. To complicate matters, Lowery — who has been affiliated with the Smithsonian but does much of his work independently — presented the results of his study of Parsons Island in a 260-page manuscript posted online rather than in a traditional peer-reviewed journal. The peer-review process is designed to help validate scientific claims, but Lowery argues that in archaeology it often leads to a circle-the-wagon mentality, allowing scientists to wave away evidence that doesn’t support the dominant paradigm. He says he isn’t seeking formal publishing routes because “life’s too short,” comparing this aspect of academic science to “the dumbest game I’ve ever played.”
The island is also a challenging site to study for a variety of reasons — most poignantly because it is rapidly eroding as the land subsides and sea level rises. The spot where the artifacts were found is now covered by the choppy waters of the bay. “The visit reinforced my will to invest my time into this time period, because it’s a very fragile record,” said Sebastien Lacombe, an archaeologist at Binghamton University, who visited the island in 2017. “It’s at risk of disappearing, and we’re at risk of [allowing] these sites and artifacts to lose their meaning forever.” ‘A weirdo kid’
Darrin Lowery walks a beach on Parsons Island. Most of the artifacts were excavated by erosion, discovered on the beach after they had already fallen out of the bluff. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Lowery began exploring the Chesapeake shoreline as a child, wandering his backyard on Tilghman Island, about 15 miles southwest from Parsons Island. In 1977, 9-year-old Lowery picked up a distinctive fluted stone projectile point. A few years later, he saw something similar on a documentary on public television, in which a Smithsonian archaeologist explained it was a Clovis point, a relic of what most people then believed were the first Americans. For the last half of the 20th century, the peopling of the Americas followed a tidy narrative. Humans traveled from Siberia across a land bridge that connected Asia and North America during the last Ice Age, when sea levels dropped. They then migrated southward around 13,000 years ago, when the ice sheets covering the continent retreated and exposed a previously impassable inland route. These people — named after a site in Clovis, N.M. — left behind distinctive, fluted stone points that have since been found scattered across North America. Story continues below advertisement
Lowery turned to his dad and said, “I found one of those.” He found more by walking the shoreline every day. Lowery made discoveries as he meandered, and he began to understand how seasonal patterns, sediment movement, wind and waves could unearth ancient treasures. “I was a weirdo kid,” he recalled. He trained as a geologist, and it was geology that initially attracted Lowery to study Parsons Island. In 2010, he published an article in Quaternary Science Reviews describing layers of windblown silt deposited between 13,000 and 41,000 years ago at Miles Point in eastern Maryland. But the geological record is like reading the CliffsNotes version of a book, and he was frustrated by an “unconformity” in the sediment layers where thousands of years were missing, like someone had ripped out those chapters.
Parsons Island is rapidly eroding. The archaeological site is now covered by the Chesapeake Bay. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Lowery and a colleague were prowling around in a whaler, looking for a spot that might fill in the blanks, when they spotted a black streak of sediment rising up out of the bay. They pulled up to Parsons Island and thought they had found “the Rosetta stone” to decode the geology. Parsons is a 78-acre island less than a mile offshore that is privately owned by the Corckran family, which uses it as a family retreat. With the Corckrans’ permission, Lowery and colleagues began to visit regularly. The bluff layers preserved a remarkably intact geologic timeline going back more than 40,000 years. Then, one morning in August 2013, the team discovered a leaf-shaped prehistoric stone tool jutting out of this crumbling wall. They knew from the work they’d already done that it was probably quite old. Story continues below advertisement
On a recent visit to the island, geoarchaeologist Daniel Wagner demonstrated why. He stepped back to scan the cliff, then tapped a narrow spade into a light tan sediment layer just above his head. That, he said, is the geologic “chapter” where they’d expect to find Clovis artifacts. Lower layers were set down before Clovis. The palm-size tool Lowery and his colleague found came out of the dark sediment layer near their knees. The scientists used two methods to date the sediment around the artifact, both showing it was more than 20,000 years old. They scoured the beach on 93 visits and conducted a formal, top-down excavation, collecting the 286 artifacts. They sent out sediment to labs that specialize in studying ancient pollen and microfossils called phytoliths to help reconstruct the ecosystem at the time. Back then, this region wouldn’t have been a coastline. The sediment the tools are embedded in dates to the “last glacial maximum” — the scientific term for the most recent coldest period of the Ice Age. In the final analysis, Lowery thinks the artifacts may have been transported downslope before they were buried, making them between 15,000 and 20,500 years old. “This was a swale, where water was collecting,” Lowery said, envisioning the ancient landscape. “You’ve got a dune. It’s got sedges and small trees on it that are windblown and all contorted, and then behind it you’ve got a little pond.” That pond may have attracted prehistoric bison, musk ox and llamas, whose fossilized molars he’s found scattered on the island shore. And it may have been what attracted the mysterious people who left behind a cache of stone tools. A story in flux
Parsons Island is seen from nearby Kent Island in the Chesapeake Bay. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Parsons Island is the latest addition to a growing list of what are called pre-Clovis sites. But while the long-held “Clovis First” theory has crumbled over the past three decades, that has only deepened the debate about how much earlier the first Americans arrived. Claims of early sites present a challenge on two fronts. The first is technical: Dating a site convincingly can be difficult, depending on the context. Sediments can shift or be disturbed. What at first look like artifacts can turn out to be “geofacts,” created not by humans but by natural processes or animals. As a result, many pre-Clovis sites “enjoy a Warhol-esque 15 minutes of fame, and then they disappear” because of real problems with the geology or the methods, said archaeologist James Adovasio. In 1973, he began excavating Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Pennsylvania, which dated back 16,000 years. It was instantly mired in controversy, and the site still has its critics today. The second challenge reflects the culture of science. For a long time, people who claimed to find pre-Clovis sites were swimming upstream against deeply entrenched thinking. Tom Dillehay, an archaeologist at Vanderbilt University, began working on a site in southern Chile called Monte Verde in 1977, which was dated to 14,500 years ago. He recalled a group of researchers he calls the “Clovis police,” scientific gatekeepers who summarily rejected any pre-Clovis sites, sometimes for valid reasons and sometimes as a knee-jerk reaction. Monte Verde began to change that. In 1997, a group of respected archaeologists visited the site and declared it authentic. “It took about 25 to 30 years for Monte Verde to be accepted,” Dillehay said. “We went through hell.”
Holly, a German shorthaired pointer, runs across a bluff top on Parsons Island. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Lowery says he isn’t interested in running that gantlet. He noted that he drew on multiple labs and methods for dating the Parsons Island artifacts in an effort to ensure that any one extremely old date isn’t a fluke. He’s also invited other researchers in to visit and study the site. That approach irritates some scientists. David Meltzer, an archaeologist at Southern Methodist University, said in an email that he would not discuss Lowery’s claims “until they go through the wringer of peer review and get published.” Others like Stuart Fiedel, an independent archaeologist based in western Massachusetts who has been skeptical of other sites, say the site should not fly under the radar just because of Lowery’s unconventional process. Story continues below advertisement
“There are people I know in the field who will not pay any attention to it, because it has not been peer-reviewed, which I think is kind of sticking your head in the sand,” Fiedel said. “It’s there. We can’t act as [if] nothing’s been found there.” Share this article Share
A bigger issue may be the site’s rapid erosion. Most of the artifacts were found after they’d fallen out of the bluff, which means their place in the geologic timeline is obscured. Nine artifacts were found in place, and only three were able to be dated using charcoal flecks found next to them. Steven Forman, a geoscientist at Baylor University, helped date the sediment layers at Parsons Island, corroborating findings from another lab. He said that it’s hard to find the artifacts in the kind of bulletproof geological context needed to support extraordinary claims. “The case is not as tight as we like to see it with other sites,” Forman said. Michael Waters, an archaeologist at Texas A&M University who has worked on pre-Clovis sites and excavated at Parsons Island, thinks he probably got there too late, when most of the artifacts had already been eroded out. Still, he pays someone to monitor the bank profile on a regular basis, because he’s ready to jump on a plane if they see something in place. “Too bad we didn’t get there four to five years sooner,” Waters said. Enter ancient DNA
An ancient bovine tooth is among the fossils found so far on Parsons Island. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Parsons Island isn’t the only site that could dramatically push back human arrival in the Americas. Last fall, a study published in the journal Science described fossilized human footprints discovered at White Sands National Park in New Mexico that have been dated to between 21,000 and 23,000 years ago. That stunning finding suggests people were here during the Ice Age — much earlier than most experts thought possible if the first humans arrived via the Bering land bridge and inland corridor. The dates at White Sands are still being disputed because of questions about the methods. But the timeline collides head-on with another exciting line of evidence: studies of ancient DNA. By examining genetic material preserved in bones and teeth and comparing those samples to modern populations, scientists have been able to track when populations mingled and became isolated from one another, offering a new window into patterns of human migration. Story continues below advertisement
In broad strokes, they’ve found that the ancestors of Native Americans split from ancient Siberian populations no earlier than 23,000 years ago. The studies can’t say where such splits took place, but many scientists interpret genetic evidence to mean that the ancestors of modern people weren’t in the Americas until much later. Genetic studies suggest that Native American ancestors traveled into what is now the United States between 17,500 and 14,600 years ago. Joe Watkins, a senior consultant for Archaeological and Cultural Education Consultants in Tucson and a Choctaw tribal member, said that he sees a few problems with using the still-evolving DNA evidence to decide how ancient sites are related to modern-day people. “The reality is genetics does not equal culture,” Watkins said. He also argued that there are still too few samples of ancient DNA in the Americas to be sure they capture the whole story. “Trying to create population histories based on 10 people, if you will, is a little bit of a scientific conundrum,” Watkins said. It could be that additional ancient genomes will one day help fill in the blanks. Another possibility is that earlier sites could represent small, isolated groups of people who didn’t contribute to the ancestry of living Native Americans.
A tree-lined path leads to a beach on Parsons Island. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) “Let’s suppose you have a successful population colonizing an area, and then one day, 15 males go out and get eaten by a short-faced bear,” Lowery said. “You reduce the genetic diversity, and bada boom, bada bing, game over.” All this explodes the neat picture of one population migrating into the Americas as ice sheets retreated, hunting big animals like mammoths and giant sloths, driving them into extinction as they went. If there were small groups making their way into the New World, with different stone tool technologies, and far earlier than previously believed, how did they get here? People could have migrated along the coast by boat, following a “kelp highway.” It’s also possible the ice sheet was not as impenetrable as experts have long thought. Lowery’s longtime collaborator, Dennis Stanford, proposed that people crossed the Atlantic Ocean in what is known as the Solutrean Hypothesis, though that idea has been rejected by many archaeologists. To resolve the question, scientists need to keep looking for more evidence. Archaeology is a historical science, and unlike chemistry or biomedicine, where researchers can perform the same experiment over and over again to see if they get the same results, consensus is built by argument, counterargument and new evidence. To a certain extent, older ideas and prejudices also fall away as new people enter the field, said James Feathers, who performed dating on samples from Parsons Island before he retired from the University of Washington. “Sometimes you have to wait for people to die off,” Feathers said.
Alex Corckran, whose family owns Parsons Island, stands on a beach on the southern side of the island. (Michael Robinson Chávez/The Washington Post) Lowery is determined to keep motoring around the Chesapeake, researching the ephemeral landscape that he loves and that may contain clues about human prehistory. He acknowledges that the sites, perhaps a little bit like him, are “persnickety” but that shouldn’t deter interest in them. Instead, it should spur more. He noted that if a pod of silverfish was found gnawing on documents in the National Archives, people would be galvanized to act. “I view it as my swan song,” Lowery said, “to say you can learn a lot from [an] eroding site if you do a little bit of effort and look at it systematically.”

——————————
Flash flooding in northern Afghanistan killed 300+ people and destroyed 1,000+ homes. Hundreds of thousands of others have been affected. Last month, similar floods in the region killed 70+. Four died in Texas storms last week as well.
Venezuela is suffering from record wildfires, which so far this year have burned about 5M acres—almost the size of Sardinia. Some experts think indigenous people started the blaze as an attempt at forest clearance, which quickly got out of hand. “Institutional failures” compounded the disaster when the ailing government responded with an inadequate number of poorly equipped firefighters. Another study from last week examined the impact of wildfires on soil health.
Flooding and “cold lava” killed 50+ in Indonesia, injuring dozens and displacing several thousand. Cold lava is a mixture of water and rocks tumbling down the side of a volcano. Meanwhile, an actual volcano erupted in Indonesia, sending smoke & ash 5000m high; further eruptions are possible soon.
The Swiss Re Institute published a 37-page report last week about natural disasters in 2023—and how much damage, in USD, they caused. The largest catastrophe was the February 7.8 earthquake in Türkiye & Syria, which killed 59,000+ people and caused $163B+ in damage. The report is full of interesting graphics & data about natural disasters.
“Last year, economic losses from natural catastrophes reached USD 280 billion, meaning that 62% of the global losses were uninsured….the insured losses surpassed USD 100 billion for the fourth consecutive year….annual insured losses will grow by 5–7% over the long term…today’s insured losses could double in 10 years….There were 142 insured-loss inducing catastrophes in 2023, a new record. Most were of medium severity, which we define as events resulting in losses of USD 1–5 billion….Over the last 30 years, we estimate that natural catastrophe insured losses have grown by 3 percentage points more annually than the global economy (in inflation adjusted terms)...”
Flooding and heat waves are impacting Brazil’s oranges, responsible for about 70% of the world’s supply. One food analysts declared that the “era of cheap food is over”—in the UK, at least. That may be one reason why UK residents took record food bank packages last year. Madagascar is struggling to adapt to a future with far less rainfall.
France is growing more concerned about a dam on Lake Geneva, controlled exclusively by Switzerland. The Rhône River, which begins in Switzerland and flows south through France, is shrinking in summers as climate change melts Switzerland’s remaining glaciers.
The Tonlé San River has been dammed in Vietnam, lowering the level in Cambodia and sometimes drying the river downstream entirely. Meanwhile, China’s lychee harvest is getting blasted by rain, impacting the world’s largest source of lychee. And, once again, Saudi Arabia is suffering flooding in its inland regions. 7 dead in historic flooding in Iran.
The eminent climate scientist James Hansen posted that, since “human-made aerosols and their cooling effect are in decline,” the cooling effect of La Niña will be counterbalanced by these rising temperatures. He also identifies a “large anomaly of increased absorbed solar radiation at midlatitudes in the Northern Hemisphere” responsible for rising temperatures there. CO2 levels are rising faster today than they have at any point in the previous 50,000 years…and a study of millennia-old trees determined last summer was the hottest worldwide in 2,000+ years…
Record nighttime May temperatures were tied in the Philippines and Vietnam. A couple Indonesian cities broke records for May temperatures. And a number of southern African states saw more records drop. And Toronto saw a record tied for the number of days reaching 14 °C (57 °F). A heat wave has returned to Bangladesh. Flooding in Cali (pop: 2.9M), Colombia.
The University of Washington was ordered to stop a geoengineering project that scientists sere conducting from the deck of a decommissioned aircraft carrier. The experiment ejected aerosolized saltwater in an attempt to reflect solar radiation. A comparative study in Nature Communications of a number of carbon pricing found that, yes, carbon pricing does work to reduce the total CO2 emitted.
It’s that time of the year again. Wildfires in Canada grow, some of which are moving towards the tar sands—forcing thousands to evacuate. 39 of the total nation’s blazes are “out of control,” resulting in air quality alerts in the United States. Meanwhile, across the Caribbean, water shortages have become the new normal, and residents (and tourists) are finding their old consumption habits hard to change. St. Lucia has declared a water emergency. In Myanmar, water shortages worsen, particularly as related to the spiraling conflict.
At least ⅛ of Europeans live in a place at risk of extreme flooding—so says a 175-page report from the European Environment Agency posted on Wednesday. The number of people living in flood-risk coastal areas in the EU & UK is expected to jump 24% by 2050. The graphics-packed report also considers how flooding will impact healthcare facilities, mental health, wastewater treatment plants, the spread of disease, cyanobacteria, permafrost thaw, and much else.
“Europe has seen devastating floods following record rainfall, droughts of magnitudes not experienced in hundreds of years, continuing sea level rise, and increasing lake and sea temperatures….permanent water stress already affects 30% of people in southern Europe….since 2018, more than half of Europe has been impacted by extreme drought conditions….Climate change is expected to increase mercury bioaccumulation in the marine food chain due to rising ocean temperatures, ocean acidification and permafrost thawing….Depression, anxiety and PTSD may persist for years after a flooding event….Under the changing climate, northern Europe is becoming wetter in general, but drier in summer. Southern Europe is becoming drier, especially in winter. For central-eastern and western Europe, the trend is less clear…” -selections from the report
Milan suffered flooding last week, the worst May flooding in 170 years. Early spring in the UK has disrupted migratory bird species and their usual patterns.
A 74-page working paper which is not yet peer-reviewed claims that earlier estimates for how much GDP would be impacted by another 1 °C temperature rise is way less than it would be in actuality. The paper claims the real cost (in USD) is about 6x greater. They claim “global temperature has much more pronounced impacts on economic activity than local temperature” and that extreme weather is mostly behind the projected decline in productivity.

Epidemiologists are worried about how climate change in Africa may extend the life of disease-bearers like ticks and mosquitoes. Other epidemiologists are worried about how cattle may become a permanent reservoir for H5N1. Growing traced of bird flu have been found in wastewater testing in the U.S., but investigators think it may be runoff from infected dairy farms.
Obesity, high blood sugar, and high blood pressure rates today globally are 50% higher than in 2000—though researchers claim that air pollution still poses a larger threat. Of a study participants in Hawai’i, 75% had respiratory issues, probably from the Maui wildfires last year.
The 2024 World Migration Report is out, and its 384 pages are not as apocalyptic as one might think. However, internally displaced people are at their all-time highest. India, Mexico, Russia, China, and Syria lead the world in emigrants; another document contains the definitions for who exactly constitutes a migrant. Unfortunately much of the data relied upon ends in 2022. Data from this year, not included in the above report, indicates a 40% jump in traffic through the Darien Gap compared to the same time period in 2023.
“The last two years saw major migration and displacement events that have caused great hardship and trauma, as well as loss of life….There have also been large-scale displacements triggered by climate- and weather-related disasters in many parts of the world in 2022 and 2023, including in Pakistan, the Philippines, China, India, Bangladesh, Brazil and Colombia….disinformation tactics are increasingly being used by nefarious actors with negative impacts on public, political and social media discourse on migration….Forced displacement is the highest on record in the modern era…overconsumption and overproduction linked to unsustainable economic growth, resource depletion and biodiversity collapse, as well as ongoing climate change (including global heating) are continuing to grip the world….the risk of further conflict has not been higher in decades, as military spending reached a new record high of USD 2,240 billion in 2022…” -excerpts from the introduction
Another report, focusing on internal displacement, came out last week; its 69 pages show a cross-section of about 47M people displaced by natural disasters (56%) or armed conflict (44%). Most of the disasters were storms & flooding, and most of the conflicts were civil wars of some form. This report also provides detailed region-by-region analyses—with sub-Saharan Africa accounting for 46% of global IDPs.
“Conflict and violence triggered 13.5 million movements, the highest figure for the past 15 years….Disasters and conflict are presented as different triggers, but their impacts can overlap, often leading to repeated and/ or protracted displacement….Drought triggered 331,000 displacements in Somalia….Floods triggered 550,000 displacements in Ethiopia….Conflict and violence triggered 3.8 million displacements in DRC in 2023, a slight fall from the record four million in 2022, but still the second-highest figure globally after Sudan….nearly two-thirds of the internal displacements recorded in 2023 originated from Khartoum state. More than 39 per cent of the state's inhabitants were forced to flee, leaving entire neighbourhoods empty….Criminal and communal violence triggered nearly three-quarters of Nigeria's 291,000 conflict displacements….” -selections from the spotlight on sub-Saharan Africa
Experts are concerned about the mental health impacts that climate change has on our minds. Hotter temperatures reportedly increase depression & aggression. Wildfires and storms can cause PTSD. Workers feel stress and desperation as their usual industries are impacted. And air pollution influences ordinary brain processes in many ways.
Some analysts believe “Peak China” may be over, signaling a period of economic tapering-off, as well as a growing militancy. Increasing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods are continuing to separate the two economies. The Netherlands finally formed a provisional government, though its proposed immigration & farming policies have set it at odds with the EU.
The Federal Reserve, the U.S. central bank, released a 46-page report on potential climate risks to the banking system’s resilience. As far as I understood, most of the risk lies in extreme weather events and the risk to insurance agencies.
Part of southeast England experienced an outbreak of Cryptosporidium, a diarrhea & vomiting illness, highly contagious, which can last weeks. At least 22 cases have been reported. Meanwhile, the CDC is issuing warnings about the more dangerous strain of monkeypox circulating in the DRC, although cases are currently limited to Africa.
North Carolina’s Senate voted to ban mask-wearing last week, under the reasoning that it would make police identification of protestors difficult. An fMRI study found lasting neurological changes in COVID survivors; they “had significantly higher cognitive complaints of mental fatigue and cognitive failure….even two years after recovering.” Experts say a summer rise in COVID cases is coming to the United States.
A study on The Canadian/American Great Lakes found that PFAS levels are increasing in the 3 largest lakes (Superior, Huron, and Michigan), while decreasing in the other two (Erie, Ontario). The study also found that precipitation is the primary means by which the Lakes are accumulating PFAS, since the chemicals are small & stable enough to move through the water cycle. Meanwhile, in England’s Lake District, a telecom failure resulted in raw sewage being pumped into England’s largest and most famous lake, Windermere, on-and-off for 10 hours; and a major British water CEO took a $4M USD pay package last year. And a look into the Chicago River’s health found that microplastics & trash are endangering health & biodiversity.

An assassination attempt by a lone wolf on Slovakia’s PM left him in critical condition, but likely to survive. 11 civilians were slain by cartel fighters in a few battles in Mexico. Violence continues to spiral out of control in Goma, DRC.
In Haiti, everything worsens indefinitely. Guns have reportedly entered from Florida, a phenomenon which officials call an “iron river.” Police have been put on the defensive against the growing might of the gang warlords.
A brawl broke out in Taiwan’s parliament. An Iranian plot was allegedly foiled to smuggle weapons into Jordan to destabilize the pro-U.S. regime.
Dozens more died in Sudan from escalating violence around Darfur. People are warning about “a disaster on top of a disaster” and the possibility of Sudan splitting apart. Others have called it “hell on earth” as 1,000+ refugees cross the Chad border every day. Disease and malnutrition are growing, while famine encroaches upon 9M helpless victims of the conflict—but the world’s attention is elsewhere.
The U.S. Army Engineers completed constructing the pier in Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. Some 600,000 Gazans have been displaced from Rafah already, and fighting has escalated against Hamas militants in northern Gaza.
Taliban forces skirmished with Pakistani soldiers for about 90 minutes last week. Taliban attacks in Pakistan, and counterattacks have resulted in a kind of ambient disruption for the rocky border zone.
Violent protests—and counteroperationsare continuing in New Caledonia (pop: 270,000), a Pacific island part of overseas France. The riots, which have killed 6 people so far, began after metropolitan France proposed a plan to expand voting rights beyond indigenous residents. A state of emergency has been declared amid worries about a spiral of violence taking hold.
As the Sahel dries out, experts are concerned about the links to rising terrorism in the region. The Sahel accounts for over 40% of global terrorism deaths—according to the analysts’ understanding of “terrorism.” Mali in particular has reportedly become home to 41 new, different non-state armed groups (NSAGs) since 2007. A contested election in Chad resulted in the consolidation of the interim leader’s power.
“If governments are continually unable to solve regional issues, the people will be at the whim of any terror group that has a basic organization. It serves these groups’ interests to promote insecurity where they can and create security where they want. A “hearts and minds” campaign in the Sahel could lead to long-term and locally supported insurgencies in a land that is currently rife with civil strife.” -from the article
Some wargamers concluded that a Trump victory in 2020 would spell the end of NATO, or at least the end of its utility. Vladimir Putin replaced his minister of defense with a top economic advisor, just before going to Beijing to reaffirm their friendship with “no limits.” Some say Putin is planning on a forever war. Some say NATO is gearing up for one, too.
Russia made several gains in the suburbs of Kharkiv, seizing several settlements which some analysts doubt they will hold. Putin claims they aren’t really trying to take Kharkiv anyway… Russia also made small progress in the Donbas—although they suffered their largest one-day casualties since the start of the war. The U.S. allocated another $2B to hasten the delivery of weapons to the front lines. The next weeks will be crucial on the front. Switzerland has invited 160+ nations to send delegates to a peace summit intended to design a path to making peace in this War.

Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-Brazil’s flooding was really, really bad, judging from this post and its accompanying images. Across just one of Brazil’s 26 states, 600,000+ people have been made homeless, 100+ have died, and the storm season isn’t over yet. Some of the flooding isn’t expected to subside for another month.
-How specifically might climate change make humanity extinct? This thread crowdsources a number of plausible ways, from ordinary famines to nuclear war and even a massive deoxygenation process. I tend to think it will be a consequence of an eventual nuclear exchange, followed by extended famine and disease.

2024.05.19 09:45 TreeTalesHub The Ultimate Guide to the Cardboard Palm Tree

When you think of a lush, tropical vibe for your home or garden, the Cardboard Palm tree might not be the first plant that comes to mind. However, this resilient and visually striking plant can be a fantastic addition to your green space. In this blog post, we will delve into everything you need to know about the Cardboard Palm tree, from its origin to its care requirements.
The Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea) is a unique, low-maintenance plant known for its thick, cardboard-like leaves and compact size, making it perfect for indoor and outdoor settings. Originating from Mexico, this ancient cycad thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. It requires minimal watering and is highly drought-tolerant, making it ideal for busy plant owners. With moderate fertilizing during the growing season and occasional pruning of dead leaves, the Cardboard Palm can flourish, adding a touch of tropical elegance to your space while also purifying the air.

What is a Cardboard Palm Tree?

The Cardboard Palm, scientifically known as Zamia furfuracea, is not a true palm but a cycad. Cycads are ancient plants that have existed since the age of dinosaurs. Originating from Mexico, the Cardboard Palm is renowned for its thick, cardboard-like leaves, which give it a unique texture and appearance.

Appearance and Characteristics

The Cardboard Palm tree stands out with its leathery, stiff, and pinnate leaves. These leaves grow in a rosette pattern, emerging from a short, stout trunk. The leaves are dark green and can grow up to 3 feet long, making the plant an attractive focal point in any setting.

Key Features:

Planting and Care Guide

Ideal Growing Conditions

To keep your Cardboard Palm thriving, mimic its natural habitat. Here's what you need to know:

Light

The Cardboard Palm prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can scorch its leaves. If you're growing it indoors, place it near a window with filtered light.

Soil

Well-draining soil is crucial. A cactus or succulent mix works well, as it prevents water from sitting at the roots, which can cause rot.

Watering

One of the best things about the Cardboard Palm is its drought tolerance. Water the plant thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering can be more harmful than underwatering.

Temperature and Humidity

This plant loves warm temperatures ranging from 65°F to 75°F. It's not frost-tolerant, so if you live in a cooler climate, ensure it's protected during the winter months. Moderate humidity is ideal, but the Cardboard Palm can adapt to lower levels.

Fertilizing

Feed your Cardboard Palm with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). This helps maintain its vibrant green color and promotes healthy growth.

Pruning

The Cardboard Palm requires minimal pruning. Remove any yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant looking tidy and to prevent disease.

Common Problems and Solutions

Yellowing Leaves

Yellow leaves can be a sign of overwatering. Check the soil moisture and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Pests

The Cardboard Palm is relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally attract scale insects or mealybugs. To keep pests at bay, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap.

Root Rot

To avoid root rot, ensure your plant is in well-draining soil and avoid overwatering. If you notice a foul smell or mushy roots, you may need to repot the plant in fresh soil.

Propagation

Propagating the Cardboard Palm is relatively straightforward. It can be done by separating offsets, also known as pups, that grow at the base of the plant. Here's a simple step-by-step guide:
  1. Remove the pup: Gently remove the pup from the base of the mother plant.
  2. Dry out: Allow the pup to dry for a few days to form a callus.
  3. Planting: Plant the pup in a well-draining soil mix and water sparingly until new growth appears.

Benefits of the Cardboard Palm

Aside from its aesthetic appeal, the Cardboard Palm is also known for its air-purifying qualities. It can help remove toxins from the air, making it a great addition to your home for a healthier living environment.

Eco-Friendly Option

The Cardboard Palm is a sustainable choice for gardeners. Its slow growth means it requires less frequent replanting, and its drought tolerance makes it an eco-friendly option in water-scarce regions.

Final Thought

The Cardboard Palm tree is a versatile and hardy plant that can bring a touch of tropical flair to any space. With its unique texture, low maintenance needs, and air-purifying benefits, it's an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. By following the care tips outlined in this guide, you will be well on your way to enjoying the beauty and resilience of this remarkable plant.
Whether you are looking to enhance your indoor greenery or add an exciting element to your garden, the Cardboard Palm is worth considering. Happy planting!

2024.05.19 07:16 smellytrashyy My code works properly in Codepen, but not in a website host. Help.

I made this code with the help of AI, I read rule 10 but trust me this kept me up at night (bad at coding). Can somebody please explain why it only works properly in Codepen, but not when I place it in a website host? I saved it as styles.css, index.html, script.js., then to a folder, then zipped it.
When I put it in Codepen, the questions drop down when I choose the gender, this doesn't work in the website host. Any help/tip is appreciated. Thanks!

A couple of notes before you read (or after because I would just jump into the list right away too)
  1. Direct quotes from Ali herself are in italics.
  2. I tried my best to keep everything in timeline order. Some people like The Come Back Kid I placed in the order where they reconnected/talked about on the pod. But I did my best to note this.
  3. All this information came from the FMH podcast, the Patreon, the original FMH blog, TikTok and other podcast that feature FMH/Ali. I also crossed reference information with this sub. I got most of this done with the help of the Patreon and listening to 1.75x speed but I lost accessed to the Patreon because my subscription ended.
  4. I'm open to edits! Things around the matchmaker era confused me and if anything is incorrect or if I'm missing someone, please let me know! I will note where corrections are made.
  5. Some people don't have anything simply because only a name was said or I couldn't find any details about the person/date
  6. And of course, please be respectful of all the sub rules!

In 2021, he DM’d her when she posted photos of her and her mom in France and invites her to visit him in London, she says she can’t but says they should catch up if he comes to NYC
Fourth Boyfriend
Met on OkCupid when you had to use it on the computer, this was mentioned on Tiktok
The Homecoming Date or Light Switch
First boyfriend? (she goes back and forth calling him her first bf or a situationship), a family friend, a month younger than Ali, dated in high school but went to different high schools, football player, made him ask her to her Homecoming dance over email (her words), Ali hid in the bathroom the whole Homecoming dance, 3-4 revisits of this situations as adults, saw him on Bumble a few years ago and texted him that he had a typo in his bio, “he very much wanted to be with me” and now he’s married with a kid. His mom is still “obsessed” with Ali and she listens to FMH
Random college guy
Freshman year of college, Ali doesn’t have a nickname for him/doesn’t remember his real name, met this guy through a friend, was texting him to invite him over to hot tub but her phone autocorrected to “how about some hot rubbing tonight?” but Ali didn’t noticed/didn’t correct it and he never replied, Ali had a house party and got really drunk and was all over him, he left the party early, she messaged him on MySpace 3-4 times asking why he left
The Resident
Matched on Match.com, first guy she dated in NYC after college, older than Ali, a doctor, lasted 3 months ”maybe”, he didn’t like Ali’s friends, got a card from him on her birthday and it said “Love, The Resident” and it took Ali back a little, Ali drinks black coffee because of him, he coordinated having her mom visit NYC for her birthday then he broke up with her a week later
The Ghost
Met at a bar when she was 25, turns out they matched on OkCupid and they already had a date scheduled next week, they dated for 6-8 weeks, had sleepovers, “The worst ghosting experience I’ve ever had”, he borrowed The Great Gatsby from Ali’s roommate, planned to make dinner together after a beach trip in August with her friends and never showed up, Ali is blowing up his phone and gets no reply, two weeks later she finally texts “are you alive? check yes or no” and he responds “Yes”, Ali then ask if he could return the book and gets no reply again, 5 months go by and she receives the book in the mail with the note: “Here’s the book back. Sorry. P.S. sorry about last summer. I was in a bad place. You’re a great person and your salmon is amazing”, since then she has ran into him twice on the streets and matched with him on Bumble
The Coach/Mr. Adorable
First serious boyfriend at 26/27 in 2013, matched on Match.com or met through work depending if you’re listening to the pod or reading her OG blog, clean-cut look, played volleyball, Ali invited him to a friend’s birthday party and they made out in the streets at 4am, on their second date he asked Ali if she was seeing any one and when Ali said no he ask her to be his girlfriend 3 days after their first date, dated for almost 1.5 years or almost 2 years depending on if you’re listening to the pod or the Patreon, first time saying “I love you” to a guy, “lovely guy“, never would posted Ali on his instagram until Ali said something, he “lived” with her for two weeks while he was in between apartments, tried blind folding/hair pulling during sex and she didn’t like it, by the end of their relationship Ali didn’t like sex and thought she wasn’t a very sexual person, after they broke up Ali drunk texted him at 2am and he picked her up and she spent the night and she took her things in the morning in a rolly suitcase, from her blog in 2015: “I just want to be careful I don’t end up with another Mr. Adorable situation, where I find myself dating my platonic best friend”, had drinks with him in 2016 from the blog: “Not in a romantic way (at least on my end)”, Ali still talks to him sometimes through casual instagram DMs, he’s currently (as of 2021) dating someone for 4+ years and Ali thinks they’re going to get engaged
Trouble
OG 2015 FMH blog, never mentioned on the pod, “I was immediately enamored with him”, met at a Beer Olympic party but he worked with one of Ali’s best friends (Ali was still dating The Coach at the time), lived in BK, tattoos and stubble, Ali’s best friend said he was a “fuck boy”, “he very much made me see that it was the right thing for me and The Coach to not be together”, from her blog in 2015: “he has this look in his eye like he’s constantly laughing at me – in a super sexy way”, he texted her saying he didn’t see anything romantically with her and she sent a gif of someone shrugging
Personal side note: Ali has mentioned she has cheated on someone but never disclosed who she cheated on or with. I feel like she cheated on Mr.A/The Coach with Trouble because of the timeline. Just a guess.
Waffles
Matched on Bumble, OG 2015 FMH blog, he asked Ali fuck/marry/kill breakfast foods, dated 2 months around summer time, on Fourth of July while watching fireworks he said how they had a great day and Ali replied with something along the lines with “yeah, it would be better if I could call you my boyfriend”, he said he wanted a relationship but just not with Ali and shortly afterwards they stopped seeing each other
The Buffalo
Lived in Buffalo NY, 6’5, Scorpio, met in 2015 at Adults National volleyball (Ali’s team won that year) where he was heckling her while she was playing, asks Ali’s mom for her number and Ali’s mom said “I guess you’re tall enough” and told him to ask her himself, he flew her out and she met his parents, dated over summer, exclusive but never boyfriend/girlfriend (but called him her LD boyfriend on TikTok), texted and talked on the phone a lot, Ali’s best friend’s favorite ex “they had really good banter”, in October he invited her to his cousins wedding and she invited him to her friends wedding, after Ali bought her ticket to his cousins wedding (with the promise he would buy her ticket to her friend’s wedding) he ghosted and stonewalled her, she “poured her heart out to him on voicemail” and he never replied, she asked him to pay her back for her ticket and he got mad that she “made this about money”, 2 years later he told Ali that he freaked out because he really liked her and saw a future with her but knew she would never move to Buffalo and it would “never work”, Ali said at the time she would have considered moving for him, Ali used to have him blocked on Facebook and told all her friends not to update her on info about him (unless she asked). He’s now married and goes to Disney with his wife (which Ali kind of scoffs at?), Ali said on TikTok that she dodged a bullet
Baby Bic
Met him at Adults National years ago, had a flirtationship with him in 2016 when he was 19 years old, ran into him at the Adults Nationals 2021, last texts she got from him were about getting his fake ID taken away at the bar and him visiting her in NYC but Ali didn’t want to buy him beer and drink at her apartment
The Chef
Matched on Tinder around 2016, he loved karaoke, “total shit”, asked Ali to be his girlfriend and to meet his mom after a month, off and on dating, broke up the first time because he was talking to his ex, lied and flew to Mexico to see his ex while dating Ali, that ex sent Ali a Snapchat of them in bed together on that Mexico trip, Ali broke up with him via text and called him a shitty boyfriend, he’s the reason Ali deleted her Snapchat because of drunk Snaps he would send post break up, FB messaged Ali 6 years later (while Roark was visiting/staying with Ali) and said sorry for being a shit head. Ali’s best friends hated him
The Dentist
Met on Halloween in the wild, Canadian, dated NYE 2016- May 2017 “nice guy, not my guy”, one of Ali’s best friend’s favorite ex “he adored you, “he was too sweet for me” and “he had no edge to him”, he painted Ali’s cat for her 30th birthday but she was annoyed it was just Rory and not both cats, The Chef texted Ali while on a date/sleeping at his house
ASV - Aspiring Sober Vegan
Met through a friend (her best guy friend’s college roommate) the day before she had to fly out to her dad’s memorial, a doctor, into meditation, remembered him “being cuter” when they went on a first date, felt “the spark”, had “omg this is awesome sex”, Ali described this relationship as a “slow burn” and “the most attracted she ever been to a partner” even thought she didn’t think he was that cute in the beginning, dated 2-3 months before he tried to ghost Ali but they talked and broke up, four months later they start casually dating/FWB because he’s moving but this turns into a ‘middle distance relationship’ and he moves to Philly, had a lot of communication issues but didn't have a lot of fights, wants to live in Ohio and give a % of his income to charity, Ali was close to saying ‘I love you’ but didn’t, he uninvited her to meet his extended family and they got in a fight, broke up with her a couple weeks before their 6 month anniversary at the park while on a picnic and told her that she’s still his favorite person, Ali used to think he was “the one that got away” and would frequently have dreams about him. From what Ali knows, he's sober but not vegan
The Scientist
2017 or 2018ish, from San Diego, went on one date, Ali ended up ghosting him due to the decline in her dad’s health, saw him on Hinge while she was in San Diego for 3 months in 2020, texted him and apologized for ghosting him, ended up going on 2-3 more dates, took a selfie in front of his house and sent it to him but acted like she didn’t know that was his house and made a TikTok about it, things ended up not working but she doesn’t make it clear on who ended it. She can now see she shouldn’t have been going on dates during this time when her dad was sick.
Good on Paper Divorced Dude
Met a couple of years ago (she told this story on TikTok in 2020) on Bumble
The Groomsman
Met at her friend Ashley’s wedding in Chicago Oct 2019, had a “two night stand” with him, texted/talked/FT’d for 3-4 months, divorced, never dated seriously/FWB, saw each other a couple time when he came to NYC, Ali stopped talking with him due to FMH and her trying to find a serious relationship, he starts dating someone, follows FMH on insta, slid into her DM in 2022 and then sent her soup while she was sick, turns out he’s single again, 2 months later Ali is heading to Chicago and texts him “Hello! Reminder that my arrival to your neck of the woods is imminent” and turns out he is now seeing someone and Ali doesn’t see him while in Chicago (at least she doesn’t mention it)
Unnicknamed person
He was her plus one at her best friend from college’s NYE wedding 2019/2020, met and hung out with Ali’s mom, posted photos of them together on her personal Insta story, “fully dating but weren’t official hehe” doesn’t have a nickname/never gave him a nickname? This could be The Latvian/the person she texted her friend in DC about saying “I think I’m on a date with my husband”

Matched on The League, 34 years old, requested a nickname change from Pie Guy to Dr. Laundry, he had to cancel their second date because he got hit by a car, went on two dates, Ali sent him a pic of his subway stop saying something along the lines of “the stop isn’t looking as cute today” and turns out someone he dated with in that photo, were supposed to go on a third date the night she got back from a bachelorette party but he didn't answer her text when she said she landed, the next day he asked her how her trip was not acknowledging her previous text at all, Ali expressed her disappointment and he replied that he was tired last night, she said she would've been understanding if he said something then ghosted her
Andddd I stopped listening to the podcast around the Dr. Pie Laundry Guy but have stayed up to date with everything via this sub.
I have a huge interest in dating culture, human behavior and data similar to Ali and this little project of mine was really interesting once I got the framework of this list. I started this list once I found this sub in December 2023 and started re listening to the Patreon while working out (and lost 10 lbs ayeee) and writing down information in my notes app. I did my best to keep this list unbiased and just give facts and information that was said.
My own thoughts after making this list is that I'm very sad for Ali. I didn't realize the extent of her dating history. I think about my own dating history or even my friends who are in their 30's and dating and Ali's dating lore runs so deep. Is Ali unlucky with love? Did she pass on someone that could have been great for her? How has she had so many dates with little success in a long term partner or even going beyond 6-8 dates? Or is Skyline the person she has been waiting for? What's the pattern with all this dates/men? So many questions.
I truly do hope Ali finds her guy because I believe theres someone for everyone. Until then, I'll be hopping into this sub (cause y'all are too funny and give the best advice) and waiting for Ali to find Mr. Height.
Enjoy and I look forward to everyone thoughts! I'll keep my eye out for any edits that need to be made.

2024.05.18 23:40 nmmju invigilators are detrimental to mental wellbeing and should be BANNED from the exam hall

the night before my chem paper 1, i was stressing profusely over the exams seeing that my predicted grade was a 9a which isn't good enough for me so i endeavoured to rest my head in order to tranquilise the chaos inside my mind and find some solace. however, overnight, all of my chemistry knowledge had perished; i dreamt it was squandered by a malevolent leprechaun with a macabre, sinister pattern of speech consisting of a strict ABABAB rhyme scheme and trochaic tetrameter signifying his desire for power and avarice for the acquisition of knowledge. my gargantuan intellect slipped through my fingers; I had been Light Yagami before (metaphor; i was not literally the antihero protagonist), with the chemistry knowledge of Walter White and a reputation that truly preceded me as when i walked to school that morning i realised i would be receiving a U despite my overwhelming intellect. destitute, despaired, despondent. if only that machiavellian villian hadn't seized my smarts. i held a vast sea of repressed rage inside of me, and once i opened my paper to a 6 marker on equilibria, i arose from my creaky chair and disenthralled a mighty bellow, tearing my shirt apart with my bare fists like the hulk, and releasing my agonising mental anguish through the form of sound waves in which shook the mortal ground, quaking under my feet in submissive obedience. this caused most of the students in the silent hall to turn to look at me in disbelief, so in a fit of anger i lost my temper and absolutely dashed my desk at the nearest student. (he suffered minor fractures to his skull and a couple bruises but nothing major. not that i could say the same for the desk; alas, it had shattered into fragments.) the students in the hall gasped in shock at the sight of their classmate consummating the role of the catalyst for a catastrophic carnage to emenate (note my alliteration of the fricative "c" amplifying the harshness of the situation). another ear-piercing screech ensued, resounding from the molten iron core of my chest, as I threw myself to the ground in defeat.
now then, any moral person witnessing this incident would clearly relate to my pain and suffering, and would at the very least leave me to grieve the remnants of a drained IQ of 341, but an invigilator chose to approach me and had the AUDACITY to REMOVE me from the hall. i was promptly disqualified and issued several consequences for disrupting the exam. this is clear evidence that examiners do not care for mental health, a stark contrast to the claims held by thousands of them worldwide. it is time to take action. it is time to make a change. it is time to fire every invigilator in the country and beyond; students' feelings shouldn't be invalidated and we have the right to express them in any form necessary, especially during the stressful exam period. i listen to the drone of students chattering as they leave the exam and i think to myself about my perpetual experiences with being dismissed and punished for natural behaviour. i can no longer pursue my lifelong aspiration of becoming a high-school chemistry teacher in Alberquerque, New Mexico because this examiner was unable to CONTROL THEMSELF IN THE EXAM HALL. they didn't even think about how much escorting me out would disturb the hardworking students completing their questions. for this reason you must make a stand against invigilators; join me in my venture to cease this barbaric treatment of well-behaved, well-prepared students such as myself.

I am crocheting a dress for my toddler and need help realizing how to properly form the pieces
I have decided to crochet a Folklorico style dress for my toddler (imagine those really flowy dresses from Mexico that women dance in). I am using Hobbii's Dahlia yarn in the color American Dream, which features long color changes from yellow to orange to pink. In my vision for this dress, I'd like the top collar area of the dress to be yellow and as the colors move down through the bust area and into the ruffles, I'd like it to be pink. My general idea is to crochet the collar and then work the bust area in the round using the collar as a sort of foundation. I have never made a wearable before, so I'm not sure how to account for the armholes, and I cant find any pattern or tutorial online that is using the technique I'm visualizing. I want to avoid working the pieces out of order so I don't disrupt the color way, which is why I want to start and the collar and work to the bottom of the dress. I've included a picture of my sketch for the dress I want to make for reference. TIA!

Gen, VSF, Clean, GM and AR, 126334 41mm blue datejust detailed comparison
Hi everyone, I am Steve, recently some friends feedback that our comparison posts on Reddit are no longer visible.((Because they were filtered). in order to make it easier for you to view them at any time, so I will continue to re-post all of our comparison posts once . When you need to check them out, just go to my homepage and look for them.
Front view
Side-by-Side Comparison View
There is unavoidable about the color difference in the blue dial, the GEN is a dark blue, the AR factory deviates the most and looks similar to a faded color!
AR sunburst on the dial is too strong, VS is the closest to GEN, followed by CLEAN, GM is too indistinct!
Bezel view
VS, CLEAN and AR are all very good in the teeth shape, GM is on the long side and the angle of the triangle on the inner edge is obviously too small! Also the triangle of the AR is too smooth.
Stick Marer view and Crown view
The overall shape of the VS is closer to the GEN, VS is better filled, the downside is the lack of rounding of the sharp edges, the other three are still mainly due to the lack of filling of the inner edges, resulting in significant gaps. Clean's chamfering of the scales is still excellent.
It’s not very good to compare because the angle of the picture will deviate. But after I repeatedly observed the physical comparison, the four factories are actually similar, all still good, or maybe my eyes are not very good! I'll have to see what you guys have to say!
Lume filling view
All three are very good, except for the GM, which is too smooth, and the AR is the grainiest, for the C, which is the closest in color and texture to the GEN!
Engraving font view
The VS and Clean are very flat, the GM and AR font have uneven edges, especially the AR!
As we can see, GEN's type is very glossy, something that all the factories lack! We noticed through the macro lens that GEN's ink printing is much fuller,
but if you look at it from the naked eye, other factories do a good job, except AR, which can be noticeably different
Hand view
The shape of the central axis of the hands, VS factory and C factory have done skeletonized solid structure,
but C factory's central sleeve position, flatness is very poor, GM and AR's sleeve position is completely closed, and is very different from GEN.
From the side view, the whole arrangement of VS and GM is very close to GEN, AR appears too dense.
Crystal Giant Side View
The overall translucency of all the factories is fine, and the cross-sectional chamfers of the windows are best polished by the AR factory!
calendar display view
There's nothing much to say about this! You can compare for yourself if you want to.
Rehaut view
The GM factory engraving has some darkening and looks a bit like rust; for the AR factory, the engraving looks a bit too light in person, both VS and Clean are still quite good
Case side view
All the factories are fine in terms of case type, and there are no significant differences!
Sel view
First, we can check the location of arrow pointed, the layered VS on the side of the bezel is the closest to the GEN, which is commendable, followed by the AR, which is less pronounced in the C factory, and the GM, which is almost flat.
Then where the lugs meet the headstock, VS and GEN are the same, GM is not too bad, VS and AR are almost flat.
Bracelet view
The VS and CLEAN both use AR steel straps, but the GM steel strap does feel a little different than the AR!
The engraving is still a far cry from the GEN.
Case back view
The same old problem as in the C factory, a ring around the bottom of the teeth, spillover from the brushed lines, unevenness!
Lume and Laser view
GEN's irregularly arranged crown pattern is always a problem for factories! And we don’t need to be too concerned!
Comparative chart of various data
Note: All measurements are taken in a calibrated state and may be inaccurate due to slight deviations in caliper position
All the replicas haven't take off the plastic protector. the VS and GM have removed the steel strap protector as you can see, the GM is closest in weight to the GEN !
Well, that's it for today's post, thanks for watching, if there are any mistakes, please correct me, welcome to comment and exchange!
Description: (Some of the photos have deviated from the real thing because of the light source, the details are still based on the text, the size of the comparison pictures are relatively large, you can download them and enlarge them for comparison.)
Thanks.
There is no perfect replica, only the one you prefer.
Steve.

2024.05.18 09:17 Grainer_M8 Talking about Duelist agent state just because

I just want to vent and babble bit. Let's talk by order of ABC

ISO

the newest addition to the roster of the duelist, ISO coming his way from China with his weird ability to cobble up radianite wave from the G5 tower was honestly an extremely underwhelming addition to the game, in terms of lore, he was basically a stepping stone for Omen to fill in, and in terms of gameplay well he was certainly something.
Let's talk about his ability :
Iso Identity as an Agent is just so weird, he isn't that good at supporting that he can be considered an Initiator, nor is he that good at making space and surviving for a duelist, the fact that Clove was added after him, with a better execution of the idea of his kit was just sad. I hope they rework him soon, support duelist is a neat concept that Clove executes nicely, hope he can recover his own identity.

JETT

The poster girl of valorant, hailing from somewhere in Korea she makes me thankful that the dev didn't let the director take over and make her a kpop girl, lorewise doesn't have anything noteworthy to add beside being a grunt but gameplaywise she is anything but, let's talk about her gameplay pattern.
She is one of the most fun agents to play around with, she has a low skill floor but she is one of the most fun agents to get a high skill ceiling with, her ability can be combo and her smoke controllability is insane, I don't think I can really do justice writing it here, she is just an honest to god a fun agent, her versatility never makes her bad, and her skill expression never really make the agent feels boring to play.
Just by playing her, you can sense that you can do so much more and IMO that makes her one of the best agent to be created.

NEON

The less problematic sister of the electric twins from the Philippine, unlike her sisters who crash her lightning into the rift and wreak havoc like a thunderstorm, Neon was more subdued in comparison which is neither here nor there. The linking between the series could've been so much more IMO, I wish they did more to bridge the gap with league and valorant. Oh yeah storywise, she has electric power, cool I guess? Duelist has the problem of having a lack luster story behind them tbh.
Well let's not be too negative, Neon gameplay is anything but lack luster, her movement from her signature is one of the most mechanically scary ability this game has, the amount of things you need to do for her movement is just pure madness from my POV, I'm not really a merchant of Neon, so I don't really have much to say about her beside she has a hell of a banger of a trailer.
P.S I wish they do more with her energy bar, maybe more effect when she has 80% energy? Maybe her relay bolt will take 20% charge and give additional two bounce? I'm just spitballing, I just wish the energy management is more complex she is already mechanically hard, so it would be more rewarding if she gives more reward to play around with.

Phoenix

Our poster boy of the game, who launch himself from the 40 percent club straight into top 3 in win rate by a single flash buff, hailing from the UK it surprises me that Jett was the one that has the hobby of collecting knives, also he has backstory about how he burned down a school or smthng? Average day in england, tbh.
Enough with the jab to our friends from the UK, it honestly a bit surprising by how much people still think Phoenix is weak and is in need of buffs with how high his winrate is, I know people like to glaze Kay/o because pro use him but like Phoenix presence in the SoloQ is top 3 in every elo, this guy doesn't need more buff, while he is one of two duelists that has no movement buff or a blink in his kit people honestly underestimate him too much beacuse of that, his kit is very practical and safe, making sure he is always on top in any exchange.
A bit of a trivia it kinda shocks me that Jett and Phoenix kit is a swap of their personality, Jett is a simple practical girl with a flashy kit while Phoenix is a flashy show-off with a very simple kit. I wonder if that was intentional.

RAZE

Honestly Raze to me is an agent that I'm not really interested in, she provides upfront damage, area control and outplay potential with her satchel, KJ is also her gf too I guess.

REYNA

A vampiric lich hailing from the heart of Mexico she has that latino feel in her and a fondness for her little hermana, one of the agents that has an actual story she has goals outside the org itself and has a very interesting take on what the supreme race is, beside having a controversial opinion about race she is also a controversial agent in the community.
As the noob stomper or smurf agent, Reyna reputation as a whole is in hot water and her whole kit only working if you get kill, making her one of the most volatile choice of pick, in terms of usefulness if you're new but in the hand of someone who can hit their shot against someone who don't? It's a terrific sight, just like how she likes it. Her smurfing potential, is honestly all inside her ult, I wish they bump her ult to 7.
Last thing, she is the best agent it term of pure execution of an idea. The execution of the idea of a predator preying on its prey, is so well executed on her kit. If she is alone, she can easily nourish herself, if she is outnumbered she can dismiss away looking for another prey and when that Ult hit holy, it's like a beast was unleashed and boy does it feel that way the maniacal laugh, the way your bullets is futile against her if she isn't quickly dispatch and the ability to pick the prey off one by one even in an outnumber setting Jesus, she is a genuine predator of an agent.
Also, P.S the best player card in the game, the way that the sun replace the hole in her chest just goes way too hard.

YORU

The most macro heavy of the agent, with the ability to teleport his way into his own grave Yoru is certainly an agent with quite a unique way to fit himself into the duelist role. A freeloader in the protocol, Yoru is basically a name only agent in the roster, as he is more focus on his ancestry rather than caring about whatever valorant is doing right now.
It's honestly a bit surprising that this is our resident stealth character when he is the most flashy and loud character in the game, abilities wise the mind game you can do with his ability is second to none and the way his kit work with each other with the addition of the decoy was honestly surprisingly very flowy? Yoru is a great addition unlike our newest one, the personality is there and the style is there I wish his sheriff skin was the same.
Thanks for reading my vent, I honestly thought I have more in the woodworks.

2024.05.18 00:43 ThrowRA4507 My [25M] GF [24F] doesn't trust me because I didn't go to her concert. Is she using me to emotionally regulate?

I recently quit my job and have been traveling the world for the past 3 months, visiting friends and trying to teach myself new skills. One of the new skills I wanted to try was conversational spanish, so I booked a two week tour in Mexico. Unfortunately, I would now be coming back the day after my girlfriend's concert. She had asked me to come and while I don't remember ever saying yes, I definitely did say how excited I was to see her and support her. I felt bad about it so I avoided telling her until she asked me the dates, and I could tell she was uncomfortable but she let it go without event.
Fast forward to during the trip and I'm talking about what my plans were for the day of the concert, which would be pretty sparse since the tour guide left. Just swimming and drinking. She asks me if I would think about moving the flight forward a day, which I think is a little much to ask since it would probably have cost me hundreds of dollars, I was the one on vacation, and I already paid for the hotel. She seemed pretty sad that I said no, which I don't think is fair to expect of me.
The day of her concert, I text her to let her know I won't be next to my phone for several hours since I'll be in the ocean and she suddenly blows up at me, telling me that I had said I was going to go to her concert and that this is part of a pattern where I commit to things and then go back on my word. She was upset the day before claiming that I had "committed" to only going on vacation 2 weeks at a time but now I was going to be gone for over a month. I think she's making it up because she wanted me to go to the concert, and that she's trying to get me to apologize to make her feel better. Here's the exact quotes:
OP: I am likely going to drink tonight, gonna go swimming now
GF: Will it be during my concert?
OP: In the evening, I am not sure when your concert is
GF: I feel incredibly unloved and disrespected. I am trying to communicate my feelings and come to understandings where we both feel acknowledged and it feels like you're only moving further away. [mutual friend name] texted me "good luck at your concert", and it made me tear up, bc I realized I wanted You to say that. And now you are going to be chilling on the beach, doing nothing but drinking and chatting all day, when you told me, I swear to God you told me, that you would Be at my concert. I don't think you apologized for not following through on that. I feel so incredibly alone and that I'm the only one fighting to make things better. I feel so lost and hopeless, I feel my feelings and desires mean nothing to you, I feel used and unsafe. I can't see the solutions anymore, I just feel sad and hopeless. I had to run out of my meeting bc I started crying. Do you see any solutions? Can you be willing to work w me? OP: I am not sure what I want right now. I feel conflicted. I promise that I value you immensely and want to get along with you no matter what and will do work to make that happen. GF: Conflicted how so? OP: Conflicted over whether I can have much role in finding a solution. There is also a level where I don't want to find a solution. But I want you to be part of my life so I am willing to put in the work if it is needed. My understanding is that you are very upset with my general behavior. That I make you feel unloved and that you can't trust me, and that you feel like I betray you. And I am not sure if I am willing to put in the work/it is my responsibility to fix that
Is she being manipulative? She always reads into everything I say and makes it way more serious than I meant it. I'm allowed to not go to her concert but it feels like she expects me to or else she will get mad at me. I think she wanted me to wait and do this trip later but it's not my job to bend to her will, I am my own person and she needs to accept that.

Chapter Eight:
(Dawn)
Our boots crunched over dirt and twigs as Frankie Dee and I made our way to the northeast side of Mackworth Island. Seagulls screamed above us in the last couple hours of daylight, and crows darted between trees below the aggressive sea birds.
I didn’t have much trouble feeding crows over in Brighton Corner a little farther from the shore. But trying to feed them on the peninsula was much more difficult. If seagulls saw even a tiny piece of food, and you weren’t actively giving it to them, they’d swoop in and take it.
And I don’t know if you’ve ever seen a seagull in person, but they’re fucking huge. They won’t just take your lunch. They’ll take your lunch money AND give you a swirlie if it's high tide.
Frankie said nothing as she hopped over a log. And I felt at peace with her beside me, almost like we were two little girls wandering through the woods looking for a spot to build a fort before our parents called us home for dinner.
At least Frankie can go home and have a nice dinner with her parents, I thought. All my father wanted to do was berate me for ‘poor life choices.’
But fuck him. I’d gone no contact when I moved to Maine, and while I was a little lonely during the first couple of years here, my life had been immensely better.
The newspaper editor had her blonde hair pulled back in a tight braid that the ocean breeze had no trouble moving when it wanted.
“Okay, so remind me what we’re doing out here again?” Frankie Dee asked, not with a tone of boredom or skepticism, just plain curiosity.
“Well, for starters, I fought to pull you out of the newsroom at 6 p.m. because normal people don’t work 12-14 hour shifts every single day.”
She rolled her eyes, but the newspaper editor actually took a sick day after pulling an all-nighter covering the ferry fire with her staff. The poor girl could barely move as I drove her home the next morning at 4 a.m.
Thankfully, because of highly-trained professionals, the ferry had been evacuated and towed to a private dock for repairs.
Only one person was hospitalized, and it was for smoke inhalation, according to Craig’s front-page article, which I read the next morning while baking muffins, muffins I took to a certain bedridden newspaper editor who was still doing some work on a laptop before sleep took her like a villain in a Liam Neeson flick.
“Hey, I typically only work a few hours on Sunday,” she said.
“Six hours is not a ‘few,’ Frankie Dee,” I said as another gull flew over.
She shook her head and turned away to hide a smile. But I saw it because I’m nothing if not an observant. . . colleague.
“Let me try again. Why did you ask me to meet you here on Mackworth Island?” she asked.
“Why, to honor our bargain, of course,” I said with a wide grin. Unlike Frankie, I didn’t bother to hide my smile. I wanted her to know I was a mischievous little witch.
My companion paused to lean against a tree that was starting to show signs of growing back its leaves for spring.
“Remind me about the supposed bargain we made again?” she asked with a small smirk.
“You teach me about journalism, and I teach you about witchcraft,” I said, continuing down the trail.
The smell of low tide overtook the island as scents of saltwater and seaweed filled the air. Some folks couldn’t stand it, but it always felt raw to me, an immutable aspect of nature that mankind couldn’t ignore or send away. It was the ocean saying, “I’ve been here for billions of years. This is what I smell like sometimes. And if you don’t like it, you can move to fucking Iowa.”
A fate worse than death, I thought, remembering the endless cornfields stretched out across the horizon. And if it wasn’t corn, it was soybeans. On and on the sea of brown and green went, this ocean carrying scents of chicken houses and granaries.
We passed a bush trying to reclaim its clothes for the warming season before walking down a set of old concrete stairs onto a narrow beach.
“Your first column on how celestial bodies have impacted human nature for millennia was wicked cool,” Frankie said. “I didn’t expect so much history as you moved through how people have relied on stars for everything from chronology to navigation across the ages.”
“Thank you,” I said, clearing my throat to stifle a tiny sob.
Not only did she read my first column, I thought. But she analyzed and thought on it.
Her compliment wasn’t empty or meant to merely serve as a passing kindness. My coworker had actually found interest in my craft, and that stirred something in me. Something that wanted. . . more. Of course, I’d spent the last week knowing Frankie and wanting more from her physically. But now? I wanted her attention and affection. I wanted her thoughts. I wanted her to know me the way nobody else did, the way nobody else cared to. Professional boundaries be damned. . . if she wanted.
“And what aspect of witchcraft are you going to teach me about today?” she asked as we passed a sign.
I merely held my arms wide pointing to several handmade structures of sticks and stone overlooking the beach before saying, “Faeries.”
Her eyes widened, and she stood frozen, processing my word choice while I read a small white and green sign posted nearby that said, “Welcome to Mackworth Island Community Village.”
It continued, “You may build houses small and hidden for the faeries, but please do not use living or artificial materials. The best materials are found in the landscape of the village itself, but if you choose to bring in natural materials, please return with those that you didn’t use. Thank you for treating this island with care and respect. This helps keep the faeries coming back.”
Frankie opened her mouth twice and closed it, trying to decide what she’d say.
Finally, she just settled on, “Faeries?”
I liked that. She wasn’t trying to offend. The newspaper editor simply wanted to understand. Because what else can you do when someone says they want to teach you about fae? Images of Tinkerbell or A Midsummer Night's Dream came to mind, little pixies or people being turned into animals.
This was the difference between someone saying they wanted to teach you about gravity and someone saying they wanted to teach you about unicorns. One of those subjects was taught by people like Bill Nye and Carl Sagan. The other was taught by a spectrum that ranged from Hasbro to Peter S. Beagle.
To her credit, Frankie Dee seemed to recover and crossed her arms.
“Okay, where do we start?” she asked.
That warmth flickered in my chest again. She wasn’t cracking jokes or laughing at my expense. The girl I was down bad for legit seemed ready to learn. . . about fae of all things. So, I took a deep breath and asked, “What do you know about Mackworth Island?”
Without much hesitation, Frankie replied, “It’s home to a school for the deaf, and the whole place is a state park.”
I walked over to what looked like a poor attempt at a log cabin made of twigs and small branches. Some seashells and leaves made up the roof. In all, the little structure was about the size of a basketball. I motioned for Frankie to come closer.
“Mackworth Island is also home to a rich tradition of making faerie houses, natural homes for tiny elves who sometimes visit our world.”
Frankie looked inside and didn’t seem surprised to find the faerie house empty.
“Are you going to get mad at me if I ask what I’m supposed to be looking for?” she asked.
I shook my head.
“What I’d tell you is that you aren’t supposed to be looking for anything. Because the Fair Folk don’t like to be seen. They might steal a sock from your hanging laundry. They could bless your bread to never grow stale. They may even place a shiny trinket in a faerie circle in hopes of ensnaring any human dumb enough to pick it up. But you’ll probably never see them,” I said.
Frankie looked inside the little house again and nodded. Then she straightened her back and stretched, looking out at the water.
An American Airlines jet flew over Casco Bay, making an approach toward the Fore River and presumably the Portland Jetport. I watched the newspaper editor nod slowly and wet her lips. Behind her, a sailboat drifted toward Great Diamond Island.
May had officially begun, and some days were growing warmer, while the nights quickly reclaimed their chill after the sun went down. Today, the golden ball in the sky was clear and bright with temperatures that would’ve been warm enough to carry the promise of spring. That is. . . if it weren’t for that brisk northern wind saying, “Hold your horses. Winter takes her time to cede Maine to summer.”
Frankie Dee cracked her knuckles and asked, “So what’s the deeper lesson here?”
I cleared my throat and moistened my lips.
“That I’m a cute and fun person to spend the evening with,” I said, running my hands down my hips.
My companion froze, and I watched Frankie’s cheeks turn nice and rosy as she spun to look out at the water and recover herself.
Without turning back to me, she found her voice, albeit shaky, and said, “That’s not much of a lesson, Dawn. I already knew those things the night you took me home. Er — to your home. What’s the deeper lesson as it relates to witchcraft?”
She finally faced me again.
My smirk hadn’t budged an inch.
“Ah. Well, then the deeper lesson here is that witchcraft isn’t about what you can see. It’s about what you learn from old stories passed down through generations, from literature, and from people who love you. And it’s about the things felt while walking your path in life. You’re Catholic. Isn’t there something about not relying on sight in that holy book of yours? Don’t you believe in things you can’t see?”
Those last two questions seemed to bring Frankie out of her thoughts. She took a breath before answering.
“Fair. Yes, I think that verse is in Hebrews. Something about the evidence of things not seen. I take your point about believing in things I can’t see. I think every person has a guardian angel that looks out for them. When my dad was having his heart attack, I believe his guardian angel stayed with him and gave him the strength to persevere until he got to the operating table. If that’s possible, why not faeries? Er — fae? Which word should I use?”
I shrugged.
“Whichever. I don’t think Holly Black is going to hunt you down for using one word or another,” I said, starting to gather some longer sticks. “And I’m glad your dad made it. Mr. Ricci has some great stories that he sometimes shares in the newsroom. Like how when you were seven, you carried a notebook everywhere and interviewed every single person you saw because you wanted to be like him.”
Covering her face with her hands, my companion groaned and kicked at the sand. She knocked a rock down into an advancing wave, causing a small splash.
“Noooooooo. Fuck. He’s already telling you stories about me?” Frankie Dee grimaced. “You’ve gotta do me a favor, bub. Stop encouraging him. I keep trying to get him to take up golfing or sitting at Applebee’s or whatever the hell old white men do, but he insists the paper’s publisher needs to be in the newsroom, apparently telling embarrassing tales instead of Lighthouse-Journal history.”
With a giggle, I said, “What? I think it’s cute. He’s obviously very proud of you. Just like I’m sure he was back then when you reported on important things like the price of milk cartons increasing by a nickel at preschool.”
That seemed to strike a nerve. An adorable nerve.
“Fuck you,” Frankie said. “Consider your column canceled along with the rest of your witch lessons.”
I laughed all the harder.
A few minutes later, I was carving a little trench in the ground a few feet away from a large rock about half my height. Then I started to place the branches and sticks into the trench and lean them against the boulder to make a rough wall.
“It’s your first faerie house, so I figure we’ll keep it basic. A simple lean-to should suffice.”
While I established the outer wall, Frankie got down on her knees and cleared out the inside of leaves and pebbles until there was nothing but a neat dirt floor she stamped down with a flat rock. I couldn’t help but notice she was still wearing the bracelet I’d given her, which made me smile. In yet another way, it seemed like the newspaper editor was taking my beliefs seriously.
I found some long blades of grass nearby and put a second layer on the stick wall, tying the grass horizontally across the branches I leaned against the boulder. Meanwhile, Frankie found a wide cap of a mushroom, picked it, flipped it over, and carved out the gills. This left a bowl-shaped piece of fungus she filled with moss picked from a nearby log.
Frankie placed the little bed inside the house, and I nodded.
“Nice. You sure did pick this up quickly,” I said.
“Well, it’s actually pretty fun. I’m glad you invited me out here. So. . . the little elf that stays here will have a shelter and a soft bed. What else are we missing?” Frankie asked, standing up and popping her back.
I reached into my purse and pulled out a bag of sunflower seeds I’d picked up from the gas station near my home.
“An offering, of course,” I said, emptying half the package of seeds in front of the tiny bed my companion had made.
“So. . . what? You’re bribing the faerie that stays here to bless your bread?”
Shrugging again, I said, “Or to simply leave me off the list of humans they intend to prank next week. You never know. Fae are unpredictable folk. I find it’s best to simply make your offering and go about your business.”
On the beach, I found a chunk of orange feldspar with deep vertical grooves worn into its pattern. Frankie watched me pocket the stone after wiping all the sand off it.
“That’s a pretty little gem,” she said.
I nodded, swapping out a smooth piece of granite I’d found in the woods behind my house and setting it down in the sand.
The newspaper editor just looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
Running my fingers over the feldspar in my pocket, I said, “Oh, the fae never give anything away for free. So if I find a pretty stone here, I always leave one from the forest behind my house as a trade. You NEVER want to owe a fae debt.”
Frankie rubbed her chin and looked down at the rock I’d placed on the beach.
“These fae sure do have a lot of rules,” she said. I waited for a grin or some kind of smirk, any indication that she was making fun of me or not taking this seriously. All I saw was a thoughtful expression, like Frankie was visualizing a notebook in her head and a floating pen writing down every faerie fact I gave her.
The warmth in my chest only grew as she continued thinking and then turned in my direction with a smile. Butterflies in my stomach made me want to leave a note inside the little faerie house we’d built.
It would read, “Dear whoever finds this, Should you find time to help a pitiful lovesick mortal, I could use your assistance in gently persuading my coworker to dissolve our professional boundaries and stick her tongue down my throat. Thanks, your friendly Portland witch, Dawn.” I wouldn’t leave my last name because you never give any creature or being your full name. That only invites trouble from those who would have more influence over your fate.
With my mind turning back to rules, I said, “Fae are strangely obsessed with rules for being such chaotic spirits of nature. They love to follow the letter of their laws while dancing through loopholes and double meanings.”
Nodding, Frankie just added, “Hard tellin’ not knowin’, I suppose.”
Right about that time, I heard the flutter of wings and the call of a familiar black bird in the ash tree above us. The sun was getting lower, and temperatures were dropping. But this was the time my friend usually appeared.
“Well, hello there,” I said. “I’m glad to see you’re well.”
Frankie looked up to see who I was talking to. A large black raven with sleek feathers and a notch on the left side of her beak called down to us and even mimicked a “Hello there,” throwing my voice back at me in the way these smart, playful birds sometimes did.
“A friend of yours?” the newspaper editor asked.
I nodded.
“I named her Varella. Come out here once a week to feed her, even talk about life. When I first moved to Portland, I didn’t know anybody. And the prospect of making friends was a little overwhelming. So imagine my surprise when I came here to explore the faerie houses, and this beautiful bird kept me company, even letting me hand feed her.”
“Varella? That’s kind of a strange name. Why did you pick that one?” Frankie asked, putting her hands in her pockets to warm them.
Shrugging, I pulled out another bag of sunflower seeds and emptied them into my hand. But the raven did not come out of the tree like she normally did to perch on my wrist. We’d secured a good bond, and I loved her company over the last few years. But today she seemed a bit skittish, hopping on the tree’s branches while looking down at us and occasionally swiveling her head from side to side.
“I don’t think she trusts you,” I giggled, piling the sunflower seeds on the ground at the base of the tree. “We should probably go. It’s getting late. It was nice to see you again, Varella. And I’m sorry about my friend. I’m still teaching her about respecting other beings she may not understand.”
We started to leave, and Frankie turned to me and asked, “Do you think I offended her?”
I shrugged.
“Ravens are smart creatures. They can solve puzzles and remember faces, even teach offspring to hate or trust certain people. Don’t worry. I left extra sunflower seeds to make up for your comment,” I said with a chuckle.
Frankie Dee let out a sigh of relief. I couldn’t tell if it was genuine or not.
“Well, thanks,” she said. “I wouldn’t want the local raven community to seek vengeance on me. I live closer to Mackworth than you do.”
We got back to the parking lot a few minutes later, and I looked at Frankie as the last few rays of today’s sunlight washed over her bright blonde hair. As I stared into her chestnut eyes, all I wanted to do was take her home and curl up on the couch together, watching a movie.
Instead, I said, “C’mon. Let’s go get something to eat.”
Frankie raised an eyebrow.
“I’ve got you figured out, FeeDee. If we part now, you’ll probably try to sneak back to the office and squeeze in a few more hours of work, getting a sad ‘dinner’ from the breakroom vending machine or skipping it altogether. Or I could pester you to come with me, and we could hit up a little burrito place I like over by the Westing Hotel,” I said.
The newspaper editor rubbed her arm while thinking this over.
“Why do you do that?” she asked.
“Do what?”
“Try to. . . take care of me all the time?”
And suddenly we’d left the witchcraft lesson behind and moved into a conversation of dangerous proportions. A man in a leather jacket walked past us and climbed into his pickup truck, pulling out of the lot and driving across the narrow bridge that connected Mackworth Island to Route 1.
“Because friends look out for each other?” I offered.
“Friends?” she asked, and the question suddenly felt like a fence being posted in front of the gate to Frankie’s heart. I didn’t like that, but I wanted to respect her boundaries.
“Colleagues,” I offered instead.
She cocked her head to the side.
“I don’t like that word anymore,” the newspaper editor whispered, rubbing her arm a little harder now.
I could do nothing but wait while Frankie worked out what she wanted to say next.
And then the fence came down entirely as she said, “I think I like pals better.”
It was almost a whisper from her lips to my ears, and my gay little heart nearly came to a halt hearing her speak the words.
“Okay, Frankie. Pals,” I said.
She nodded, scratching her chin again. And as we left the island of faerie houses behind, my brain, perhaps a little inappropriately, thought, gals being pals.
