2024.05.19 08:00 EJC28 Chargers 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 5 - Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame:
NFL: Head coach Jim Harbaugh is set on building an offensive bully and that starts with the offensive line. Alt comes in as a polished tackle who’ll step in and immediately boost the unit and protect Justin Herbert.
CBS Sports: B. He is the best in this class, but now he has to make the transition to right tackle for Jim Harbaugh. That can be tough to do. But taking a lineman makes sense, I just might have taken J.C. Latham as a better fit.
ESPN: Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz said they would stick to the process of picking the best player available, a strategy he learned from 26 years in the Baltimore Ravens personnel department that won him two Super Bowls. Selecting Alt on Thursday night supports this theory. The Chargers currently employ only four receivers -- none of whom has a season over 800 yards in the NFL -- and passed on taking the second-best receiver in the class. The Chargers are returning four of their five offensive line starters from last season and signed center Bradley Bozeman in free agency, but stuck to their strategy despite much bigger needs on the roster.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His Skyrim character is Thad: The High King of Skyrim.
Round 2, Pick 34 - Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia:
NFL: Our second pick, second receiver and first trade of the night. The Patriots slide back a few spots, and the Chargers get a receiver who should be thrust right into the mix. Although McConkey had injury issues at Georgia, if he's able to stay healthy, he could be Justin Herbert's favorite target in due time. With great route-running skills and impressive separation ability, McConkey could be an 80-catch player one day.
CBS Sports: A. Crafty, athletic, polished WR who can win on the boundary and in the slot. Releases are great. Route-running nuance also there. Deceptive speed and YAC skills.
ESPN: After trading Keenan Allen and releasing Mike Williams, the Chargers came into the draft with just four receivers on the roster. None among that receiving group of Joshua Palmer, Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis and Simi Fehoko had ever topped 800 yards in an NFL season. Since Herbert entered the league in 2020, he has always had a coterie of reliable pass-catchers, including players like running back Austin Ekeler and tight end Gerald Everett, who both left in free agency. McConkey, the Chargers hope, gives Herbert another player he can count on in the passing offense after many key departures.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Cannot stand The Office save for Scott’s Tots.
Round 3, Pick 69 - Junior Colson, LB, Michigan:
NFL: If there was one player I would have bet would follow Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers, it would have been Mike Sainristil or Colson. The latter was the emotional heartbeat of a championship Michigan defense, as Colson is a full-tilt competitor who brings his all to every game and every practice. He's a tackling machine whose coverage limitations were likely what caused him to fall out of the top 50 picks.
CBS Sports: B. Ties to Jim Harbaugh and addresses a need at off-ball LB. Best tackling linebacker in the class by a wide margin. Flashed some coverage chops in 2023 but not a speciality. I didn’t see premier range or speed to the football. Beats blocks with decent regularly and ball skills must show up more in NFL. Very young.
ESPN: This was a position of need for the Chargers and Colson, who was a second-team Big Ten selection and led the team with 95 tackles last season, will bring necessary competition to a mostly unproven group. Both of the Chargers' starting outside linebackers in 2023 won't be back next season, as Kenneth Murray Jr. signed with the Tennessee Titans in free agency and Eric Kendricks was released in March. Linebackers Daiyan Henley (51 defensive snaps in 2023) and Nick Niemann (238 defensive snaps in 2023) are the Chargers' lone returning linebackers from last season, but they also signed Denzel Perryman and Troy Dye.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: We all know what pick this is so make with the ‘nice’ jokes.
Round 4, Pick 105 - Justin Eboigbe, DT, Alabama:
NFL: Jim Harbaugh keeps beefing up both fronts. Eboigbe played well in Bama's Rose Bowl loss to Harbaugh's Wolverines, so this pick isn't a shock. The Chargers are adding toughness in Eboigbe, assuming his health improves. He had a breakout season in 2023.
CBS Sports: C+. Classic Nick Saban defensive lineman. Two-gapping extraordinaire with thick, powerful frame. Good first-step quickness but won’t be a calling card to win as a pass rusher consistently in the NFL. Not a pass-rush move type. Higher floor than upside. Limited role.
ESPN: The Chargers begin Day 3 by filling another of the team's most significant needs. L.A. is set at outside linebacker on their defensive line with Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Tuli Tuipulotu, but they are largely unproven in the interior. Some of the Chargers' best interior defenders from last season, defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day and defensive tackle Austin Johnson, won't be back in 2024. Eboigbe, 6-foot-4, 275 pounds, was a first-team All-SEC selection last season, finishing with a caterer-high seven sacks.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has been known to run around banging coconuts together simulating a horse.
Round 5, Pick 137 - Tarheeb Still, CB, Maryland:
NFL: The first tape I watched of Still, coincidentally, was against Michigan -- and he looked good. Jim Harbaugh clearly agreed, although Still's lack of elite speed or size might make him more of a candidate to kick inside as a nickel.
CBS Sports: C+. Chippy, fluid CB who wants to come up and hit people. Super-smooth hips. Doesn’t have the length or pure speed to be lockdown type but gets the most out of his athletic skill set. Won’t follow routes perfectly at the next level. Can be too grabby in man. Infectious energy on the field. Just lacks premier traits.
ESPN: The Chargers' pass defense was abysmal last season, allowing 249.6 yards per game, which ranked 30th in the NFL. So they had to address their secondary in the draft. Still, who is 6-foot and 189 pounds, ran a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at the combine and finished with five interceptions last season, which tied for sixth in the FBS. He has lined up primarily outside (77% of his snaps came from out wide), but he can also play in the slot.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: His favorite operating system is Windows XP.
Round 5, Pick 140 - Cam Hart, CB, Notre Dame:
NFL: The Chargers double up on long DBs to help combat the AFC West's playmakers. Hart has a strong athletic profile, and he has the perfect makeup to be a special teams coverage standout as well.
CBS Sports: B-. Old-school, long outside CB. Huge with extreme length. Moves well for his size but probably won’t be able to stay with quick separators in the NFL on a regular basis. Last-resort grabbing gets him into trouble during the route. Speed is average and didn’t make many plays on the ball but not tested often. Maybe move to safety?
ESPN: Cornerback is the first position where the Chargers have drafted multiple players so far, proving that the group was one Hortiz knew needed improvement and competition. Cornerback may also be Hortiz's favorite position. He told reporters that he "never feels full at corner. That is a position that you never stop chasing," he said. The Chargers now have six cornerbacks on the active roster, including the 6-3, 202-pound Hart.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Takes three to five business days to reply to an email.
Round 6, Pick 181 - Kimani Vidal, RB, Troy:
NFL: I'm a bit surprised the Chargers didn't take a back before this, but Vidal has a chance to join the RB rotation for Jim Harbaugh. Vidal's profile reads similarly to Blake Corum, so it's easy to see why Harbaugh might view him favorably.
CBS Sports: A. This is a future feature back. Stocky, well-built frame. Between the tackles experience and can blend slashing and multi-cut style together. Elusive, sets up blockers well and has effortless power through contact at times. Not a true burner.
ESPN: Since the Jim Harbaugh era began in February, the theme for the Chargers has been on running the football. Vidal gives them depth at a position that will be one of the most important on the team. Considering the talent in the Chargers' running back room, which includes J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, Vidal likely projects to be mainly a special teams contributor in his first year. Vidal set the Troy career (4,010), single-season (1,661), and single-game (248) rushing records, and his great-uncle is Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Spreads his love of Frito Pie eaten out of the little bag, like God intended.
Round 7, Pick 225 - Brenden Rice, WR, USC:
NFL: Jerry Rice's son and Caleb Williams' go-to guy figured to go a few rounds higher than this, but it's possible scouts felt there was more development needed in his game. With the Chargers, there are WR jobs open for Rice to make the roster early on.
CBS Sports: B+. Downfield specimen with quality size. Didn’t test amazingly but was a vertical weapon for Caleb Williams at USC. Stiff routes and only glimmers of YAC but has the power to run through some tackles. Fun fit with Justin Herbert. Son of NFL legend Jerry Rice.
ESPN: Only four receivers were on the Chargers roster before the draft, so drafting a second receiver seemed inevitable. Rice, 6-3, 208 pounds, is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Jerry Rice. He played his final two seasons for the Trojans, where he was the primary deep target for No. 1 pick Caleb Williams. Rice led the team with a 14.6 air yards per target average in 2023, and 7 of his 12 TD receptions were on vertical routes -- tied for the sixth-most in the FBS.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: After adjusting the other picks & removing outliers he regresses to 1st overall.
Round 7, Pick 253 - Cornelius Johnson, WR, Michigan:
NFL: Another Michigan player for Jim Harbaugh. Johnson rarely was featured in Michigan's run-heavy system, but he made his mark as a blocker and occasional big-play receiver. His hands are inconsistent, but Johnson could find footing in L.A.
CBS Sports: C+. Sizable receiver who can deceive CBs with his long-striding speed when given a runaway. Inflexible movements will keep him from getting open on regular basis or winning against press. Ball skills are good in traffic.
ESPN: The more, the merrier in the Chargers receiving room. Johnson is their third pick at receiver, and for good reason. Johnson is also a familiar face, playing under Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan and the many other Michigan coaches on the Chargers staff. Johnson, 6-foot-3, 212 pounds, was a four-year starter at receiver and had 119 receptions since the start of 2021, the sixth most in the Big Ten. Johnson mainly played out wide in his career, with 84% of his snaps over the last three seasons coming lined up on the outside.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Upset with the rising price of cheese and cheese related goods.

A road rage incident led to a deadly altercation between Washington State Patrol (WSP) and a suspect Thursday on the shoulder of Interstate 5 by Everett.
Washington State Patrol responded to a road rage incident shortly after 4 p.m. on I-5 near milepost 197. The suspect allegedly began ramming a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) contractor vehicle which was in the process of operating a lift over the slough with two contractors onboard.
Traffic monitor footage shows the suspect chasing the WSDOT contractor around the vehicle with a hammer. The contractor attempts to flee the suspect by jumping over a barrier but the suspect grabs him to the ground and begins attacking him.
The footage then shows the suspect walking back to his car and getting in while a WSDOT worker attempts to stop him but the suspect reverses and nearly hits the worker with his vehicle. The suspect then moves his vehicle forward almost hitting the WSDOT contractor, gets out of his vehicle and gets in the driver’s side of the WSDOT vehicle before getting out after a few seconds and running across the interstate.
Shortly after WSP arrived on scene the suspect engaged in a physical altercation, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said. During this altercation the WSP trooper withdrew and shot the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
One of the WSDOT contractors sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Northbound Interstate 5 was closed while Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) investigated the incident but has since reopened after about eight hours.
Positive identification of the decedent, as well as cause and manner of death will come from the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.

2024.05.12 18:17 FearPodcast I enjoy being a zombie

My name is Everett and I never thought I would enjoy being a zombie. I thought that when you become one you lost yourself to the virus. That may be true to a point. You do lose a little bit of yourself but it’s only the bit you wouldn’t miss. It was the most terrifying and freeing day of my life when I turned. I don’t think we all come back this way because the one that turned me definitely didn’t seem all there.
I was one of the people you see in movies who doesn’t make it past the first day of the outbreak. I was walking home from work when this man began to chase me down the street. I thought he was running away from something at first but realized too late he was after me. He jumped at me and tore a huge chunk out of my shoulder. I fell to the ground and he must have accomplished what he wanted because he kept running down the street, probably after the next unfortunate soul.
I load there for what felt like hours but was probably mere minutes. I felt the blood draining out of me as I slowly and painfully drifted away to nothingness. That’s actually exactly how it felt when I ended up getting back up. It felt like absolutely nothingness. All I could feel was an ache in my head and the odd urge to feed. Other than that I was very much myself.
I wasn’t sure how long I had been out but the town was in total chaos. There were people running everywhere screaming. I heard gunshots coming from down the street and the sounds of sirens were deafening as an ambulance when flying past me. There was a car across the street from me that was on fire and it looked like someone was trapped in the back seat.
I ran over to the vehicle as I regained my wits and tried to help the person trapped in the back. It was a young man who looked absolutely horrified. It looked like both sides of his vehicle had been hit and it looked like it stopped him from opening the doors. I told him to back up as I grabbed a nearby large rock and threw it at the window to try and break it open. I had to do this a few times before the window finally broke open.
I grabbed him and tried to pull him out of the wreckage but for some reason was hit with a sudden urge. I bit down into the man’s neck and blood spurt everywhere. I pulled myself back in horror as the man pleaded. He fell back into the car and stopped moving soon after. The blood felt amazing on my lips. I also noticed the ache in my head had subsided for a moment.
It’s been about a month now since that first day on the street. Since then I’ve had to embrace the good and bad of being part of the undead. I tried to hold off as long as I could before feeding again but the pain in my head was unbearable. So maybe a week into the outbreak I broke and made my first real kill. It was a young couple that was holed up in an old apartment building. Apparently not all the zombies can speak because they took me in without much convincing. It only took them a few moments to realize they had made a mistake when I pounced on them and finally relieved my splitting headache.
I find that I need to make a kill at least once every few days to keep the splitting headache away. If I don’t then my body takes over and I have no choice over who dies. At least this way I can keep it mitigated to one person every few days. I also enjoy choosing the person I’m going to consume. I make sure there isn’t anything left to come back when I make a kill. I wouldn’t want someone else like me around. Might spoil all the fun.

2024.05.12 09:28 Chill_fuuu First time viewer season 1

Okie doke so I’m just now watching this show & have no one to talk this show with. Im on episode 6 or 7 of season 1 and here are my thoughts so far that no one asked for lol 1. I’m going to need Lauren to pick up her big girl undies and stop chasing after Carl who is not that interested (so far)
  1. What is the big deal with Carl? Am I missing something????
  2. Without excessive speculation of MH of the cast, Everett needs therapy. Lindsey needs therapy. And they need to separate.
  3. Kyle seems like fun buuuut if I was Amanda I wouldn’t put up with the consistent drunk booty calls
  4. Stephen’s interviews bring me life
  5. Christina likes to stir the plot. She does seem irritating in full doses but that doesn’t warrant how she’s been treated
  6. I loved when Ashley “wigged out” on Leverett.
  7. Haven’t come to full conclusion on Jaclyn but it is giving pick me vibes sometimes.

2024.05.06 15:33 Leather_Focus_6535 The 113 inmates executed by Virginia in the post Furman era and their crimes (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 2, cases 59-113]

This is part 2 of my list for Virginia's post Furman execution roster. As mentioned in part 1's opening paragraph, character count limitations forced me into splitting my Virginia's execution roster into two separate posts. For the link to part 1, please click here.
59. Kevin Cardwell (1991-1998, lethal injection): Cardwell intercepted Anthony Brown, a 15 year old drug carrier, while he was at a bus stop. He lured Brown into his apartment and searched his belongings for any drugs. Brown was then dragged into the woods, shot to death, and stripped of the cocaine strapped to his legs.
60. Mark Sheppard (~1980s-1999, lethal injection): Sheppard and his accomplice Andre Graham were invited by their dealers, 40 year old Richard and 35 year old Rebecca Rosenbluth, over to their home to buy cocaine. However, an argument broke out during the transaction, and Sheppard shot the couple to death. The pair then drove away from the scene with the couple's car and a few undisclosed stolen items. Sheppard had a long history of violence that dated back to when he was 9 years old.
61. Tony Fry (1994-1999, lethal injection): Fry and his partner shot Leeland Jacobs, a 42 year old car salesman, while robbing his Ford Dealership. The pair tied Jacobs to a car they stole while he was still alive, and dragged him to death.
62. George Quesinberry Jr. (1989-1999, lethal injection): Quesinberry shot 63 year old Thomas Haynes while breaking into his office with an accomplice. When Haynes survived the initial shooting, Quesinberry hit him in the head with the gun and fractured his skull. The pair stole a total of $200 in the robbery.
63. David Fisher (~1970s(?)-1999, lethal injection): Fisher was paid $7,000 by an associate to kill 18 year old David Wilkey in retaliation for abandoning a murder scheme. Originally, Wilkey was part of a conspiracy to seduce and marry a young woman in order to kill her for an insurance policy, but backed out when he genuinely fell in love with the would be victim. He was tricked into going on a hunting trip with Fisher and shot to death by him. Fisher had 25 previous criminal convictions and was involved with organized crime. He was in the witness protection program at the time of Wilkey’s murder.
64. Carl Chichester (1991-1999, lethal injection): During a holdup of a Little Caesars, Chichester shot and killed the manager, 30 year old Timothy Rigney, for refusing to open the cash register. He and his two accomplices ran off with a total of $110.
65. Arthur Jenkins III (1991-1999, lethal injection): Jenkins and his teenage brother shot and killed their uncle, 72 year old Floyd, and their uncle's friend, 69 year old Lee Brinklow. They then stole their wallets and sacked Floyd's home for any money and valuables.
66. Eric Payne (~1980s-1999, lethal injection): Payne broke into the residences of two women, 61 year old Ruth Parham and 57 year old Sally Fazio, and raped them. Both women were beaten to death with a hammer, and he took money from their drawers and pocket books. He had a history of drug possessions and exposing himself to women.
67. Ronald Yeatts (1989-1999, lethal injection): Yeatts and an accomplice invaded 70 year old Ruby Dodson's home and stabbed her to death. The pair grabbed her purse during the burglary and divided up the money they found in it.
68. Tommy Strickler (1989-1999, lethal injection): Strickler and his partner kidnapped 19 year old Leann Whitlock from a mall and crushed her head with a 70 pound boulder. Whitlock's car and credit cards were stolen during the attack.
69. Marlon Williams (~1980s(?)-1999, lethal injection): Williams was paid $4,000 to murder 44 year old Helen Bedsole by his dealer, who was also her estranged husband. The couple were in the midst of a bitter divorce at the time, and the dealer wanted to both collect a life insurance policy and prevent Helen from dividing up their assets. He suck into the couple’s home, and shot and killed Helen in the kitchen. Williams had an extensive criminal history, which included cutting the throat of his ex girlfriend’s grandmother, 71 year old Virgina Parker, during a bungled attempt on her life.
70. Everett Mueller (1990-1999, lethal injection): 10 year old Charity Powers was dropped off at a skating ring by her mother. She was supposed to be picked up by her mother's friend, but they didn't show up due to failing asleep in their home. While Powers was waiting outside the ring in vain for her ride, she was abducted by Mueller. He raped the girl, slashed her throat, and dumped the body in a nearby forest.

72. Thomas Royal Jr. (~1991-1999, lethal injection): Royal and 3 other gang members fatally shot a police officer, 29 year old Kenneth Wallace, while he was sitting in his patrol car. Wallace was killed as part of the gang's campaign to target law enforcement agents. Royal and his fellow gang members were also suspected in the shooting of James Smith Jr. (age unknown), a Vietnam veteran, outside his trailer, but the charges were dropped from the lack of sufficient evidence.
73. Andre Graham (~1993-1999, lethal injection): Graham assisted the above mentioned Mark Sheppard in the Rosenbluth murders. He also shot and killed a waitress, 20 year old Sheryl Stack, and injured a 23 year old man while robbing a restaurant on his own, and is suspected in a total of 10 murders.
74. Douglas Thomas (1990-2000, lethal injection): The parents of Thomas' 14 year old girlfriend, 33 year old James and 33 year Kathy Wiseman, barred her from seeing him. In a bid to continue their relationship, Thomas and his girlfriend shot them to death in their home.
75. Steve Roach (1993-2000, lethal injection): Roach shot and killed 70 year old Mary Hughes on her doorstep and stole her credit card. He was caught on tape trying to use Hughes' stolen cards to pull money out of an ATM machine in North Carolina.
76. Lonnie Weeks Jr. (1993-2000, lethal injection): Weeks was pulled over by a state trooper, 50 year old Jose Cavazos, for speeding while driving a stolen car. In the confrontation that followed, he shot Cavazos dead after climbing out of the car, and fled the scene. He was captured hiding in a nearby motel after an hour long manhunt.
77. Michael Clagett (1994-2000, electric chair): Clagett's girlfriend was fired from her job as a hotel waitress by the management, and the couple decided to retaliate by robing the establishment. They shot and killed the owner Lam Van Son, a 41 year old Vietnamese refugee, a waitress, 31 year old Karen Rounds, two other employees, 31 year old Karen Rounds and 32 year old Wendell Parish Jr., and a customer Abdelaziz Gren, a 34 year old Moroccan immigrant, and took $400 in cash from the register. Van Son’s 3 year old son was sleeping in the backroom during the attack, but the couple left him unharmed.
78. Russel Burket (1993-2000, lethal injection): Burket snuck into the home of 30 year old Katherine Tafelski while her Navy SEALs husband was deployed overseas, and sexually assaulted her. Katherine and her 5 year old daughter Ashley were both beaten to death with a "rusty" crowbar.
79. Derek Barnabei (1993-2000, lethal injection): Barnabei seduced a fellow Old Dominion University student, 17 year old Sarah Wisnosky, into a relationship with him and kidnapped her. She was raped, partially strangled, beaten to death with a hammer, and dumped into a river near campus grounds. Due to him being of Italian ancestry, his death sentence and execution sparked outrage in Italy.
80. Bobby Ramdass (1992-2000, lethal injection): Ramdass was condemned for the shooting death of Mohammed Kayani, a 34 year old Pakistani immigrant working as a clerk, during a convenience store robbery. He also shot dead 19 year old Darrell Ferguson in an alley and wounded a cab driver in other robberies.
81. Christopher Goins (1994-2000, lethal injection): Goins broke into the home of his 14 year old girlfriend (who was 7 months pregnant with his child). He shot and killed her parents, 35 year old James and 29 year old Daphne Jones, and her siblings, 9 year old Nicole and 4 year old David. The girlfriend and her youngest sibling, 21 month old Kenya, were also shot in the attack. Both of them survived, but the unborn child was lost in the shooting.
82. Thomas Akers (1998-2001, lethal injection): Akers and his accomplice were driving with their friend, 24 year old Wesley Smith. When they pulled over on a road to urinate, they pounced on Smith. In the attack, he was strangled with a belt and beaten to death with a baseball bat. They pair then grabbed $200 from his wallet and dumped his body in a creek. While on death row, Akers demanded his execution and made threats against the judge who sentenced him if it wasn't carried out.
83. Christopher Beck (1995-2001, lethal injection): Out of anger for being fired, Beck invaded the house of his former employer, 52 year old William Miller. He waited for him and his two roommates, 54 year old Florence Marks and 34 year old David Kaplan, to return home and shot and stabbed them all to death. Marks was also raped in the attack. Although Beck claimed that he "only" staged a sexual assault on her, a medical examination confirmed that she was abused in that manner. Beck stole several guns, bicycles, and money in the robbery.
84. James Patterson (1987-2002, lethal injection): Patterson held his friend's mother, 56 year old Joyce Aldridge, in her home at knifepoint. Enraged that she only had a few coins in her purse, he raped Aldridge, stabbed her 3 times, and left her to die. When Aldridge managed to crawl to a phone to call her son for help, Patterson returned and stabbed her 14 more times. Although Aldridge's murder was left unsolved for years, Patterson was later imprisoned for raping an 18 year old girl, and DNA found at the murder was traced to his samples filed in the inmate database in 2000.
85. Daniel Zirkle (1999-2002, lethal injection): Zirkle's girlfriend broke off their relationship due to his violent behavior and filed protective orders against him. He was arrested for violating them and sentenced to a few months in jail. After his release, Zirkle went to his ex girlfriend's home without her permission to visit their daughter, 4 year old Christina. However, the ex girlfriend's other daughter, 14 year old Jessica Shifflett, blocked him from coming inside. He stabbed her to death and kidnapped Christina. He then drove Christina to the George Washington National Forest, slit her throat, and stabbed himself in a failed suicide attempt.
86. Walter Mickens Jr. (~1974-2002, lethal injection): Mickens ambushed and sodomized 17 year old Timothy Hall, and stabbed him 143 times. He stripped the boy of nearly all of his clothing, and left him to die in an abandoned apartment. A long time sexual predator and career criminal, Mickens had several robbery and sodomy convictions dating back to the 70s. One of his previous incidents involved breaking into an elementary school, and coercing a teacher of her purse by threatening the life of a 7 year old student. He also had a conviction for sexually assaulting a cellmate.
87. Aimal Kasi (1993-2002, lethal injection): In his efforts to fight against American foreign policy regarding Islamic nations, Kasi attacked the Langley CIA headquarters with a Type 56 assault rifle. He shot dead 2 CIA employees, 66 year old Lansing Bennett and 28 year old Frank Darling, and wounded 3 others. Kasi then fled to Afghanistan, but was lured into his native Pakistan to be captured in a joint FBI-CIA led operation, and extradited back to the United States to face trial.
88. Earl Bramblett (~1970s(?)-2003, electric chair): Bramblett had molested 11 year old Winter Hodges and feared that her parents, 41 year old William and 37 year old Teresa, were planning on reporting him to the police. In an attempt to prevent that from happening, he attacked the family in their home. Teresa was strangled, while William, Winter, and another daughter, 3 year old Anah, were shot dead. Bramblett then set the house on fire to destroy any evidence of the murders. He had several abuse allegations and was also suspected in the 1977 disappearances of two 14 year old girls, Tammy Akers and Angela Rader, that worked for him, but was never charged for any of them.
89. Bobby Swisher (1997-2003, lethal injection): Swisher abducted 22 year old Dawn Snyder from her flower shop at knife point and raped her. He slashed Snyder's throat and dumped her into a nearby river. Despite managing to swim back to shore, Snyder succumbed to her injuries on the river bank.
90. Brian Cherrix (1994-2004, lethal injection): Cherrix ambushed 23 year old Tessa Van Hart while she was trying to deliver a pizza. He sodomized and shot Van Hart twice in the head, and left the body in her car. The crime was left unsolved until Cherrix was arrested for shooting and wounded his brother two years later. In an attempt to secure leniency, Cherrix disclosed some details of Van Hart's murder, but tried pinning it on a deceased cousin. He only confessed when investigators learned that the cousin couldn't have possibly done it.
91. Dennis Orbe (1998-2004, lethal injection): Orbe fatally shot Richard Burnett, a 39 year old clerk, while robbing a grocery store, and seized $90 from the register.
92. Mark Bailey (1998-2004, lethal injection): Bailey shot and killed his wife, 22 year old Katherine, and their 2 year old son, Nathan, while they were laying in bed. He claimed to investigators that the murders were done out of anger for Katherine's alleged infidelity.
93. James Hudson (2002-2004, lethal injection): In a feud over a driveway, Hudson broke into the home of the Cole family (consisting of brothers, 64 year old Thomas and 56 year old Walter, and Thomas' wife, 64 year old Patsy) to confront them with a shotgun. He shot all three of the Coles dead and drove away from the scene. Hudson was captured after nearly a day long manhunt.
94. James Reid (1996-2004, lethal injection): Reid stabbed 87 year old Annie Lester 22 times with a pair of scissors, beat her with a can of milk, and strangled her with the cord of a heating pad. He left the body in her bedroom and fled her house. Although the evidence for his guilt was overwhelming (which included the blood on his clothes matched Lester's DNA, several of his fingerprints were discovered on the murder weapons, samples of his saliva were found on a cigarette butt in her house, and his handwriting was identical to the writing of a death threat sent to Lester), Reid's death sentence and execution was contested on the grounds of him allegedly having brain damage from a car accident, seizures, and alcoholism. The motivations behind Lester's murder remain unknown, but prosecutors suspected that it might have been part of a bungled robbery or rape attempt.
95. Dexter Vinson (1997-2006, lethal injection): Vinson attacked his ex girlfriend, 25 year old Angela Felton, near her home. Felton tried to escape by driving away, but he rammed her car with his, and forced her inside it. She was then dragged into a vacant house, raped, beaten, and stabbed in the face, neck, arms, buttocks, stomach, and vagina. The body was left in the house as Vinson fled the scene.
96. Brandon Hedrick (1997-2006, electric chair): Hendrick kidnapped a sex worker, 23 year old Lisa Crider, while he was cruising for prostitutes. Initially, Crider and Hendrick had engaged in paid consensual relations, but the situation turned violent when he robbed her of $50 at gunpoint. She was then raped, shot in the face, and dumped into a river.
97. Michael Lenz (~1990s-2006, lethal injection): While serving 29 years for a burglary and weapons possession conviction, Lenz stabbed a fellow inmate, 41 year old Brent Parker, to death. Both were part of a Nordic Neopaganism sect, and the killing was committed over Parker allegedly not expressing enough devotion to their deities. Parker was serving a life sentence for killing a friend during a drunken rage at the time of his own murder.
98. John Schmitt (1999-2006, lethal injection): During a holdup of a bank, Schmitt shot and killed the guard, 39 year old Shelton Dunning, and took $35,000 from the vaults.
99. Kevin Green (1998-2008, lethal injection): Green and his teenage nephew stormed a convenience store, and forced the owners, 68 year old Lawrence Vaughan and his wife, 53 year old Patricia, to hand over $9,000 in cash. They then shot the couple, killing Patricia and wounding Lawrence.
100. Robert Yarbrough (1997-2008, lethal injection): Yarbrough and his accomplice tied up 77 year old Cyril Hamby while robbing his grocery store. They subjected Hamby to beatings and nearly decapitated him with a pocket knife. The pair then stole beer, wine, cigarettes, and an undisclosed amount of money.
101. Kent Jackson (2000-2008, lethal injection): Jackson and an accomplice attacked 79 year old Beulah Kaiser in her apartment, and raped her. She was stabbed several times in the neck, beaten, and her cane was shoved down her throat after she was anally penetrated with it. A cigarette butt found at the crime scene was traced to the pair.
102. Christopher Emmett (2001-2008, lethal injection): Emmett was staying at a motel room with a coworker, 43 year old John Langley, while they were working on an out of town roofing job. The pair played cards until Langley went to bed. As he slept, Emmett bludgeoned him to death with a lamp, and stole $100 from his wallet. He used the stolen money to buy crack cocaine.
103. Edward Bell (~1990s-2008, lethal injection): While running away from officers trying to arrest him for a parole violation, Bell shot and killed one of his pursers, 32 year old Sergeant Ricky Timbrook. Bell had a long criminal record, which included several felony and misdemeanor convictions of assault, burglary, carrying conceal weapons, and was found to have stolen a car during the investigations of Timbrook's murder.
104. John Muhammad (~1999-2008, lethal injection): The so called “D.C. Sniper”, Muhammad shot and killed 17 random people between the ages of 21-76 with the help of a teenage accomplice in mostly sniper attacks. The killings took place in the national capital, hence the epithet, and across several states. Due to his affiliation with the Nation of Islam and the accomplice’s accounts of planning terrorist attacks and training camps, Muhammad’s murder spree are often considered to be acts of Islamic extremism in the media. However, experts believe that his real intentions was to kill his estranged wife using the sniper attacks as a mask. Muhammad had a long history of domestic violence, and had abducted his children from his estranged wife on numerous occasions. His accomplice had also accused him of sexual abuse a few years after his execution.
105. Larry Elliott (2001-2008, electric chair): Elliott, a former military counterintelligence agent, was in an online "sugar daddy" relationship with a much younger woman. At the woman's request, Elliott sent her over $450,000, which she used to pay for a home, credit card, car, breast enhancement surgery, and enrolling her children in a private school. The woman was also involved with a bitter custody dispute with her children's father, 30 year old Robert Finch. In an attempt to win the woman's devotion, Elliott shot and killed Finch in his home, and beat Finch's girlfriend, 25 year old Dana Thrall, to death with the butt of his gun.
106. Paul Powell (1999-2010, electric chair): Angry that his friend, 16 year old Stacie Reed, was in an interracial relationship, Powell made an attempt to rape her in her home. When she fought back, Powell stabbed her to death. He also tied up Stacie's 14 year old sister to be raped, stabbed, and strangled, and left the girl to die in the family's basement. The sister managed to survive with the timely arrival of their stepfather, who called the police and the paramedics to the scene. On the mistaken belief that the death penalty was off the table, Powell sent letters flaunting the lewd details of the murder to taunt the prosecutors, judge, and the victims’ family.
107. Darick Walker (~1996-2010, lethal injection): In 1996, Walker walked up to the door of 36 year old Stanley Beale, and angrily accused him of showing up at his home despite the fact that they were complete strangers. He then shot Beale dead in front of his children and girlfriend, and ran away from the scene. A year later, Walker forced himself into an apartment, and shot 34 year old Clarence Threat seven times while he was laying in bed with his girlfriend. Walker had a history of violence and frequently stole from his friends and family. In one reported incident, he kicked the stomach of a pregnant woman in an act of rage.
108. Teresa Lewis (2002-2010, lethal injection): Lewis conspired with two men that she had a sexual relationship with to kill her husband, 51 year old Julian, and her stepson, 25 year old Charles. Charles was about to be deployed to participate in the then upcoming invasion of Iraq, which gave him a $250,000 life insurance policy that Lewis wanted to collect from both him and his father. She let her accomplices inside their trailer, and shot Julian and Charles while they were sleeping. Charles was killed immediately, while Julian, who witnessed Lewis pay the attackers, survived long enough to notify the responders of his wife's involvement.
109. Jerry Jackson (2001-2011, lethal injection): Jackson broke into the apartment of 88 year old Ruth Phillips, and woke her up while he was rummaging through her room. Despite Phillips' pleas for her life, Jackson raped her and suffocated her to death with a pillow. He stole her car and a total of $60 in the break in, and spent the stolen money on marijuana.
110. Robert Gleason (2007+(?)-2013, electric chair): In 2007, Gleason shot and killed 54 year old Michael Jamerson, in order to prevent him from testifying about his drug trafficking activities, and was given a life sentence for the murder. While incarcerated, he tied up and strangled his cellmate, 63 year old Harvey Watson (who serving a life sentence for a mass shooting). Prison officials then transferred him to a high security prison to await trial for Watson’s murder, but he managed to strangle another inmate, 26 year old Aaron Cooper (who was serving 34 years for robbery), to death with the wire that separated their cages. Gleason demanded the death penalty, which was given to him by the courts. He also claimed that he committed several other killings before Jamerson, but his additional confessions currently remain unverifiable.
111. Alfredo Prieto (~1984-2015, lethal injection): Prieto was both a serial killer of young women and a member of the Pomona Northside street gang. His sexual crimes involved the abductions, rapes, and shooting deaths of at least 4 females, 24 year old Tina Jefferson, 22 year old Rachael Raver, 19 year old Stacey Siegrist, and 15 year old Yvette Woodruff. Raver and Siegrist’s partners, 22 year old Warren Fulton III and 21 year old Anthony Gianuzzi, were also murdered during their kidnappings. The other known victims, 27 year old Manuel Sermeno, and couple, 71 year old Lula and 65 year old Herbert Farley, were shot dead during robberies. In the home invasion that killed Woodruff, Prieto and his fellow gang members also abducted her 17 year old friend and the friend’s 33 year old mother. The mother and daughter pair were gang-raped, shot and stabbed together, but they managed to escape with their lives. Prieto was sentenced to death in both California and Virginia, but stayed in California’s San Quentin until his death warrant was signed in Virginia. He had also shot and injured 3 gang members over his suspicions of them sleeping with his wife, but was lightly sentenced due to the victims' gang affiliations.
112. Ricky Gray (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Gray and his similarly aged nephew murdered at least 9 people, which composed of a lone woman, 35 year old Treva Gray, and two entire families, the Harveys (consisting of parents, 49 year old Bryan and 39 year old Kathryn, and their daughters, 9 year old Stella and 4 year old Ruby), and the Baskerville-Tuckers (consisting of 21 year old Ashley, her 46 year old mother Mary, and Mary’s 55 year old husband Percyell) in a week long burglary spree. Almost all of the victims were tied up and gagged in their homes, and beaten to death with hammers or had their throats slit. Before she was killed by them with her parents, victim Ashley Baskerville had assisted Gray and his nephew in several of their robberies. The pair stole any items and valuables they could carry, and were reported to have taken money, computers, television sets, wedding rings, and even cookies. They were also linked to several non fatal assaults, one of which involved a 26 year old man being beaten into a coma.
113. William Morva (~2005-2017, lethal injection): Morva, a son of Hungarian immigrants, and an accomplice were arrested while trying rob a grocery store at gunpoint. While awaiting trial, he badly sprained his ankle and wrist in prison, and was transferred to the Montgomery Regional Hospital for treatment. He overpowered a deputy guarding him with a metal toilet-paper container, stole his gun, fatally shot Derrick McFarland, a 25 year old hospital security guard, and escaped. Morva then fled to Virginia Tech’s campus, and shot and killed 40 year old Eric Sutphin, one of the police officers chasing him.

2024.05.05 00:07 Kapples14 A New Era: 1968 Presidential Election

A New Era: 1968 Presidential Election
Background: After defeating Democratic President Walter Reuther in 1968, New York governor Nelson Rockefeller would become the 40th U.S. President in a period of time straddled with the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam War, and many more complex issues that have weighed down Rockefeller's presidency. Now after defeating political activist William F. Buckley in the Republican Primaries, President Rockefeller and Vice President Hiram Fong must face off with Los Angeles mayor Sam Yorty and Maine senator Edmund Muskie in order to win another four years in D.C..
At the start of 1968, many had expected New York senator Robert F. Kennedy, the former U.S. Attorney General and brother of late President John F. Kennedy, to win the nomination in order to challenge President Rockefeller. Things would become far more tragic and complicated when RFK was assassinated on June 5th, 1968 at the Ambassador Hotel. In his place, Kennedy's campaign manager, former ambassador Channing E. Phillips, would run in his stead; thus, becoming the first African-American to be placed in nomination for the presidency by a major political party. By the time of the national convention, however, many would be shocked when Sam Yorty took the nomination by a wide margin against major candidates like Phillips, Edmund Muskie, and Henry Jackson.
While many political pundits saw the election remaining in favor of Rockefeller due to Yorty's controversial nature and lack of a national presence, things would begin to complicate when Ohio congressman John M. Ashbrook managed to get ballot access in all fifty states as the nominee for the Constitution Party. While running as the right-wing alternative to Rockefeller, Ashbrook has managed to make it to several of the first presidential debates thanks to strong backings from various conservative groups and powerful donors. With Ashbrook's presence in polling remaining as prominent as it has been, many have worried that Ashbrook would serve as a spoiler against President Rockefeller by dividing the Republican vote.

Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller: 40th President of the United States of America (1965-present), 49th Governor of New York (1959-1964), 1st Under Secretary of Health, Welfare, and Education (1949-1951). Hiram Leong Fong: Senator from Hawaii (1959-present), Speaker of the Hawaii House of Representatives (1946-1954).
Nelson Rockefeller: Despite suffering from low approval ratings and numerous protests against his handling of the Vietnam War, President Rockefeller has remained adamant regarding his goals for reelection. The president has highlighted his successes in fighting for civil rights, conservation efforts, and government reform. While many conservatives have condemned the president for expanding the federal government far more than previous presidents, Rockefeller has argued towards how the new departments have helped aid businesses through road improvements and creating new housing projects for their employees.
Rockefeller has insisted that the Vietnam War is drawing close to an end, and promised that before the decade ends, that the U.S. troops would return home from Vietnam. While Rockefeller has admitted that initial war plans had be severely altered due to the surprise attacks of the Tet Offensive, he was still confident that the U.S. and South Vietnam would prevail. In response to the rising violence of anti-war protests, Rockefeller has also sworn to increase funding for police and public universities in order to address the damages done by said riots.
Endorsements: Frmr President Everett Dirksen (IL), Frmr Vice President Harold Stassen (MN), Vice President Hiram Fong (HI), Frmr House Speaker Charles Halleck (IN), House Minority Leader Gerald Ford (MI), House Minority Whip Richard H. Poff (VA), Senate Minority Leader Bourke B. Hickenlooper (IO), Senate Minority Whip Milton Young (CA), Senator Walter Mondale (D-MN), Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI), Senator Margaret Chase Smith (ME), Governor Malcolm Wilson (NY), Governor George Romney (MI), Governor Ray Shafer (PA), Governor Ronald Reagan (CA), Governor Paul Laxalt (NV), Zsa Zsa Gabor (CA), Chuck Connors (CA) Pat Boone (TN) Wilt Chamberlain (PA) Frank Sinatra (NY), William F. Samuel William Yorty: 37th Mayor of Los Angeles (1961-present), Representative for CA-26 (1953-1955), Representative for CA-14 (1951-1953). Edmund Sixtus Muskie: Senator from Maine (1959-present), 64th Governor of Maine (1955-1959).
Sam Yorty: Once considered a dark horse candidate in the 1968 Democratic Primaries, the populist mayor would develop a massive audience drawn in by his aggressive campaigning and brash persona, undeterred by the disapproval of more traditional progressives. After winning the nomination, Yorty has only begun to draw more attention and support during the presidential debates, many have begun to look at Yorty as a champion of the conservatives and independents disenfranchised by Rockefeller and the Democrats' left-wing liberalism. With a less favorable reputation among civil rights advocates, Yorty has stated that he would not seek to remove past civil rights legislation, but would be less than likely to support any new policies that infringed on states' rights.
While campaigning, Yorty has prioritized staunch anti-communist policies be placed in America's immigration system and diplomatic practices, targeting the neighbors of communist countries as potential venues for communist sympathizers and spies to enter the nation as foreign agents. This staunch stance has also put Yorty in the same camp of hawks looking to end the war, but Yorty has since begun to change his stance on the war to prioritize removing U.S. troops from Vietnam in order to prioritize naval and financial support for South Vietnam. Yorty has also made several pledges to cut government spending that had been raised under Rockefeller, numerous tax cuts, and expanding housing.
Endorsements: Frmr President Hubert Humphrey (MN), House Speaker Carl Albert (OK), House Majority Leader Hale Boggs (LA), House Majority Whip Dan Rostenkowski (IL), Senator Russell Long, Governor Kenneth M. Uhlman (WA), State House Speaker Jesse M. Unruh (CA), William Loeb (NH).

John Milan Ashbrook: Representative for OH-17 (1961-present). John Bowden Connally Jr.: 39th Governor of Texas (1963-present), 57th Secretary of the Navy (1961).
John M. Ashbrook: The young congressman would announce his presidential bid, accusing President Rockefeller of abandoning the conservative movement in favor of left-wing policies such as government interference in business and states' rights. Running with the Constitution Party alongside John Connally, the Democratic governor of Texas, Ashbrook has ran on themes of small government and social conservatism. He would state that his goals as president would be to dismantle the new government departments created by Rockefeller, crack down on protestors, and increase the military effort in Vietnam.
Ashbrook has also leaned towards leaving civil rights legislation in the hands of state governments, massive budget cuts targeting government welfare and social affairs, reinstating previous immigration restrictions removed by Rockefeller, and strict adherence to the U.S. Constitution that would center around vetoing any bills enacting further government expansion.
Endorsements: Senator Thruston B. Morton (KY), Senator John Tower (TX), Senator Strom Thurmond (SC), Governor Lester Maddox (GA), William A. Rusher (NY), F. Clinton White (NY).

2024.04.30 21:50 bluewords If the Bears top weapons all have average NFL seasons for them, we will finally have our first 4,000+ passing season.

Average yards per season: - Keenan Allen - 957 - DJ Moore - 1094 - Kmet - 529 - Everett - 404 - Swift - 353 (receiving yards) - Rome - It is hard to say how a prospect will transition from college to the NFL, so I tried to see how a top 10 selected WR can be expected to do by averaging receiving yards in their rookie season for every top 10 WR since 2017.
Prospects included and their yards:
Drake london 866 Garrett Wilson - 1103 Jamar Chase - 1455 Waddle - 1015 Devonta Smith - 916 Corey Davis - 375 Mike Williams - 95 John Ross - 0
Even including Ross's 0 yards, this puts the average at 728.
Total Yards: 4,065
Will Williams be able to feed everyone enough to give them an average season? Who knows, but it really speaks to how good the weapons around him are and the job Poles has done bringing talent to this offense.
Bonus fun fact: If all of these players match their second worse year (for Rome, this means tying Mike Williams’s 95 yard rookie season), that would be 2,929 passing yards, most by a bears QB since 2019.

2024.04.30 02:22 Kapples14 A New Era: 1968 Republican Primary

A New Era: 1968 Republican Primary
Background: Due to the tensions around the Vietnam War and rising political division within the country, President Rockefeller has been stuck feuding with the Republican Party's conservative wing, but no major candidate had come to officially challenge the president outright. While some had had sought to recruit California's newly elected governor Ronald Reagan, he would decline the bid in favor of serving his full term as the state's governor. In late February of 1967, lawyer and talk show host William F. Buckley would announce his decision to run for the presidency during a televised event.
While running in an attempt to rally the conservative wing, Buckley would primarily focus his campaign on pushing Rockefeller's administration to better reflect the values of the whole party. With his various criticisms of the president beginning to hold more weight due to Rockefeller's own unpopularity, the campaign is still considered a longshot bid that would only come to aid the Democrats in weakening the president's reelection bid.
In order to rehabilitate his image, the president would announce his decision to hold debates with Buckley, arguing that such debates would help to better showcase his presidential abilities and prowess. During these debates, Rockefeller slowly began to win back support from the general public, but Buckley's new national presence only saw further growth as he began to grow more vocal support from the Republicans' conservative factions.

Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller: 40th President of the United States of America (1965-present), 49th Governor of New York (1959-1964), 1st Under Secretary of Health, Welfare, and Education (1949-1951).
Nelson Rockefeller: After narrowly defeating President Reuther in 1964, President Rockefeller has faced a difficult path within his presidency as he has had to navigate the escalation of the Vietnam War, the bloody and violent conflicts brought about by the Civil Rights movement, and rising cultural and societal issues that have surfaced out from America's underbelly. When asked about the difficulties that his administration has faced, the president would state that he has been well aware of the stress and anger the American people are feeling, and swore to always stand with the good American people in such trying times.
While failing to end the Vietnam War started by his predecessor, Rockefeller has sworn to do everything in his power to bring America's troops home and return to solely using military and technological aid to support South Vietnam, as well as creating new assistance programs to aid the American soldiers. Rockefeller has also begun to begin experimenting with new healthcare programs in order to provide financial support to the poor, disabled, and elderly unable to afford the rising costs of private healthcare. While campaigning, the president has also touted his successes in conservation, civil rights, workers' rights, and government reform.
Endorsements: Frmr President Everett Dirksen (IL), Frmr Vice President Harold Stassen (MN), Vice President Hiram Fong (HI), Frmr House Speaker Charles Halleck (IN), House Minority Leader Gerald Ford (MI), House Minority Whip Richard H. Poff (VA), Senate Minority Leader Bourke B. Hickenlooper (IO), Senate Minority Whip Milton Young (CA), Senator Margaret Chase Smith (ME), Governor Malcolm Wilson (NY), Governor George Romney (MI), Governor Ray Shafer (PA).

William Frank Buckley Jr.
William F. Buckley: As one of the leading figures of the modern conservative movement, Buckley has gone from a major campaigner for Rockefeller's presidential campaign and into one of his more prominent critics. When asked about his decision to run for the Republican nomination, he would site his belief that the Republican Party had been lead by liberals and moderates for far too long, and have allowed for the GOP to become soft and ineffective. Despite having never held public office, nor having ran a political campaign himself, Buckley would announce his decision to run in order to give the conservative wing a much-needed voice.
Buckley has centered his campaign on labor reform by cracking down on unfair union practices, increasing military support for Vietnam, and placing stricter immigration regulation towards those who come from countries neighboring communist-led governments. If elected, Buckley has promised to utilize the country's intelligence and economic influence to help choke out communist countries that refuse to support democratic institutions. While having originally been a firm supporter of segregation, Buckley has softened his positions in lieu of support for more progressive policies to help promote the cause.
Endorsements: Senator Barry Goldwater (AZ), Senator Strom Thurmond (SC), Represenative H.R. Gross (IO), Governor Ronald Reagan (CA), Governor Louie Nunn (KY), Governor Paul Laxalt (NY), Robert Stack (CA).

2024.04.29 08:22 robothawk [EVENT] A NEW PEARL HARBOR! CANADIANS ATTACK WASHINGTON! MOBILIZATION OF THE PARTISANS REPELS ASSAULT AT BELLINGHAM!

Canadians Fund Haida Assault on Bellingham, Canadian Naval Shelling Kills Dozens!
Headlines across Cascadia brought out the news, that a horrific assault, unprompted and indiscriminate, had killed many in the towns of old Bellingham. Reports at first of landings of thousands of Canadian marines, followed by the radio call that everyone prepared for,
Red Dawn! Red Dawn!
Every radio squaked to life as a broad-brand message went out,
Canadian Marines are making landfall near Bellingham, Partisan Brigades 43 through 47 muster! To Arms! For the People of Cascadia!
For hours the radios would play patriotic anthems and material while calling forth the Partisans, and giving updates of the battle. At first the reports were few and far between as the Canadians marched inland and the Partisans mustered for their counterattack, then the Canadians assaulted Bellingham, and cruisers in the harbor blew apart houses in a futile attempt to dig out the Partisan defenders.
Canadians Halted at Bellingham! Fighting intensifies around the town center, partisans are driving back the invaders to the East and West, Glory to the Partisans!
As the Canadian assault turned into a rout, reports came from hobby-radio operators calling out troop movements,
A whole company of Canadians just fled past the old Donaldson House just North of Victor
Partisans would then follow down the reports in trucks and cars, chasing down and firing on the fleeing Canadian marines. During the rout, over 100 were captured, upon which they were immediately driven to the train station in New Everett and taken to Federal Detention in the capital of Napavine.
The Congress of Communes has, at the behest of President Johns Jr., asked the Canadian Federal Government to extradite these prisoners to be tried and convicted for acts of piracy, and to condemn the supposedly "autonomous" Haida's actions.

I used to be stationed in Everett Washington and I miss going to the Funko home store every couple of weeks to seek out the latest and greatest and try my "luck" at finding a Chase or two.
When it came to Soda Pops I only ever sought out the villians cause ya know, Sodas bad for you and just like those evil doers, if ya ain't cheat'n, you ain't try'n!
Here in Virginia though, at a local Wal-Mart, I just happened to have my pocket digital scale with me and after weighing about 18 Zombie Iron Man Sodas I have something to add to my collection.

2024.04.19 02:44 Impossible-Basis-916 Manifesting warmer days and couple friends (MF)

Manifesting warmer days and friends…
Hello Rooster-people—
We've lived in the Portland area for some years, and damn, making friends is not easy. We are both close to 40. We have kids that keep us pretty busy, but to maintain sanity and a healthy marriage, we try to get out fairly regularly. We enjoy outdoor recreation like hiking and paddle boarding, trying new restaurants, live music, comedy, nightclubs, a soak pool session at McMenamins or our favorite hotel, or just drinks on the town in a place with a good vibe and low lights.
In more recent years, we've also discovered that when the weather is warm and we have time, we enjoy a day in our birthday suits at Collins or Rooster. We've also done spa sessions at Everett House, and the WNBR twice. We enjoy the freeness, fun, and humanizing nature of nudity (and to some degree the exhibition, if we're being honest). Somehow it also seems to ignite some passion between us, even if these nude environments are not overtly sexual. We enjoy each other's company, but always say to each other that some of these activities would be even more fun with friends—at least sometimes. But here's the thing...
We're not swingers.
Finding friends that would be down to do just normal, clothed stuff is hard enough. Finding friends that want to do the "normal stuff" as well as some of the more adventurous stuff with us is just really dang tricky. Our assumption is that not everyone is open to an invitation to the nude beach. We've struck up conversations with folks when we're at the beach, but it doesn't really extend beyond a short, superficial conversation. We don't want them to think we're coming on to them, and we don't want them to think we're inviting them to come onto us. We also want to respect people's space and never assume they want company.
Cutting to the chase, we're posting here to make some couple friends — friends that would enjoy a hike, or good conversation, a game of cards, laughs, going out to dinner, or dancing, or an art show, (Normal Stuff) ... but also Collins or Rooster, or the WNBR, etc.
At the risk of sounding a little exclusive, we're hoping to make friends with people somewhat similar to us. Here's what that means:
If you read this and it resonates with you (and your partner), we hope you'll send us a chat. We'd like to talk for a while and see if it feels like meeting in person would be a good idea in the not too distant future.
Please know we will ask you to photo verify that you are who you say you are—a male/female couple—right out of the chute. We will do the same. Faces are not required. Keep your clothes on. :) We'll ask you to write something unique on a piece of paper to include in the photo so we know you haven't just sent us a picture of some randos. There are way too many internet creeps and wackos out there. We're not going to waste our time talking to someone who has excuses for why they can't verify. We also hope that both of you will participate in any conversation that follows verification.
Basically, creepers and/or singles need not apply. The end. We look forward to hearing from you, non-creeper couples.

2024.04.18 23:04 Kapples14 A New Era: 1964 Presidential Election

A New Era: 1964 Presidential Election
Background: After the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Vice President Walter Reuther would be inaugurated as the 39th U.S. President in order to serve out the remainder of Kennedy's term. He, accompanied by the recently-appointed Vice President LeRoy Collins, now seek a full term in their reelection bid. While Reuther has boasted several key achievements in civil rights, many have questioned Reuther's capabilities to lead the U.S. in the midst of military conflict with Vietnam, the rising costs of the Space Race, rising steel prices, and . Due to the Vietnam War, President Reuther would lose the endorsement of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who had been an adamant critic of the war. Meanwhile, Rockefeller has faced backlash from conservative Republicans for not selecting a more conservative candidate to balance the ticket and focusing more on the interests of the political establishment.
The 1964 Presidential Election is the first election where the incumbent president succeeded their deceased predecessor since 1952, when Vice President Everett Dirksen succeeded Fiorello la Guardia before losing to Hubert Humphrey in the general election. This is also the first post-assassination election since 1904 when President William McKinley was killed.
In a historic moment, Senator Hiram Fong of Hawaii, a son of Cantonese immigrants, would become the first person of Chinese decent to be nominated on the presidential ticket by a major political party. Fong is also the second nonwhite candidate to be nominated for the vice presidency since Senate Majority Leader Charles Curtis was nominated as the vice presidential nominee by the Republicans in 1924.
Many have also eyed the rising competitive nature of the Southern and Northeastern U.S., with Republicans beginning to gain political powers in the region unseen since Reconstruction. While states like Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana remain devoted to the Democratic Party, this has not eased concerns of party leaders as previous Democratic candidates have been polling worse with the rural population over time. Meanwhile, the Republicans have seen a slow decline in strength with states like New York and Maryland, leaving some to fear that they will have begin relying more heavily on competitive states in both the safely-Democrat South and politically-mixed Midwest. Whomever wins the race will likely be the first to define the future of America's newest political era.

Walter Philip Reuther: 39th President of the United States (1963-present), 38th Vice President of the United States (1961-1963), 4th President of the United Automobile Workers (1946-1961). Thomas LeRoy Collins: 39th Vice President of the United States of America (1963-present), 33rd Governor of Florida (1955-1961).

Walter Reuther: Upon ascending to the presidency after Kennedy's death, Reuther has sought to build himself up as a strong leader to a fractured America. While Reuther has passed numerous historic pieces of legislation that have advanced the civil rights movement, many have questioned how the government will be able to close the racial gaps in America's institutions. During his campaign, Reuther has supported expanding the federal government in order to better compensate in its ability to aid the disenfranchised.
Several critics have pushed against Reuther's decision to allow for military strikes in Vietnam, calling his decision reckless and hasty. While most Americans have supported the need to retaliate against the Asian nation after several ships were destroyed, Reuther has faced criticism for his handling of the conflict due to the increasing brutality of the war. While Reuther has had struggled to rehabilitate his image as a wartime leader, he has made his intentions clear in desiring a swift end to the combat before things worsen. During the campaign, Reuther has begun to experiment with new talking points including environmentalist efforts, creating a domestic form of the Peace Corps, and better enforcing integration in education.

Nelson Rockefeller: After landing a decisive victory in the Republican primaries, Rockefeller has been able to run an effective and well-funded campaign focused on criticizing Reuther's attacks on Vietnam, arguing that the president has escalated conflict despite in order to expand the president's war time powers to an unnecessary degree. If elected, Rockefeller has promised to prioritize ending the war by diplomatic means in order to avoid any unnecessary bloodshed from either innocent civilians or U.S. forces.
While campaigning, Rockefeller has prioritized supporting new projects for public housing, even promoting the concept of a Housing Department in order to help combat the nation's growing homelessness and poverty epidemic. On the matter of civil rights, a key issue in the election, Rockefeller has been an adamant supporter towards the matter and has touted his own successes in the prohibition of many discriminatory practices in housing and the workforce. The governor has also highlighted the 50% increase of black and Hispanic workers in New York able to access union resources, as well as the promotion of numerous women to government positions within his administration.

Today’s Financial System is “Dangerously Unstable”. The only lasting and meaningful way to reform the Wall Street megabanks is to restore the Glass-Steagall Act via Congressional legislation and permanently separate federally-insured banks from the trading casinos on Wall Street.
By Pam Martens and Russ Martens: April 18, 2024 ~
George Washington University Law Professor, Arthur Wilmarth, has done it again. After authoring the seminal book on the insidious evolution and enormous dangers still posed by the Wall Street megabanks (Taming the Megabanks: Why We Need a New Glass-Steagall Act) Wilmarth is now out with a new, gripping paper. In the paper’s abstract, Wilmarth explains how the risks posed by the Wall Street megabanks in 2008 have become exponentially more dangerous today. He writes:
“The dangers created by universal banks (including their ‘internal’ shadow banking affiliates) and ‘external’ shadow banks have intensified since 2009. A toxic symbiosis has developed between the syndication and underwriting of risky loans and debt securities by universal banks and the origination of speculative private credit by ‘external’ shadow banks. That noxious partnership has helped to generate unprecedented levels of risky consumer and corporate debts.
“Universal banks and shadow banks have created dangerously unstable financial markets that depend on frequent bailouts from central banks and other government agencies. Four serious financial disruptions since the GFC [Global Financial Crisis] have triggered significant government interventions and bailouts—the repo crisis of 2019, the pandemic financial crisis of 2020–21, the failures of three U.S. regional banks in 2023, and the collapse of Credit Suisse. Those episodes demonstrate that universal banks and shadow banks pose massive and unacceptable threats to our financial system, economy, and society.”
Wilmarth’s paper expands on the groundbreaking work of Patrick Corrigan, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame Law School, who last August did a deep dive into the shadow banks that exist off-balance sheet in the form of Variable Interest Entities (VIEs) at the largest Wall Street megabanks (a/k/a universal banks). Corrigan documents the key role these shadow banks/VIEs played in the financial crisis of 2007-2010.
Wilmarth explains the breakthroughs in Corrigan’s research as follows:
“…Professor Corrigan shows that universal banks used off-balance-sheet VIEs [Variable Interest Entities] to evade rules governing bank capital, bank affiliates, and investment companies. The Basel Capital Accords and implementing rules adopted by U.S. regulators ‘allowed banks to reduce their capital requirements either by moving their loans (through securitization) to off-balance sheet conduits or by obtaining financial guarantees from AAA- or AA-rated companies’— such as AIG, Ambac, and MBIA. The most extreme example of such arbitrage occurred when federal regulators allowed universal banks to reduce their risk-based capital requirements by 90% if they transferred RMBS [Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities] or CDOs [Collateralized Debt Obligations] to off-balance-sheet conduits that were backed by short-term guarantees (liquidity puts) from banks.
“Professor Corrigan makes a new and important contribution to the securitization literature by showing that the Federal Reserve Board (Fed) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) exempted off-balance-sheet securitization conduits from regulation either as affiliates of the sponsoring banks or as investment companies. An informal exemption granted by the Fed and a 1992 rule issued by the SEC allowed bank sponsored VIEs to escape a host of regulations governing bank affiliates and investment companies—including capital rules, restrictions on affiliate transactions and investments, prudential supervisory standards, and special receivership proceedings. By allowing securitization VIEs ‘to avoid virtually all of the rules that apply to bank affiliates and investment companies,’ the Fed and the SEC ‘exacerbated distress as the 2007–2009 financial crisis unfolded.’ ”
The poster child for off-balance sheet hubris before, during and after the 2008 financial crisis was the megabank, Citigroup. The official report from the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission provides these shocking details:
“…More than other banks, Citigroup held assets off of its balance sheet, in part to hold down capital requirements. In 2007, even after bringing $80 billion worth of assets on balance sheet, substantial assets remained off. If those had been included, leverage in 2007 would have been 48:1, or about 53% higher….”
For our as-it-happened reporting on the collapse of Citigroup in 2008, see The Rise and Fall of Citigroup. By March of 2009, Citigroup was a 99-cent stock.
What is lurking in the form of off-balance sheet VIEs today at some of the megabanks on Wall Street is just as opaque and dangerous (if not more so) than it was in 2008.
JPMorgan Chase’s 10-K (Annual Report) filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (page 202) shows it has $1.498 trillion in off-balance sheet exposures as of year-end 2023. This is the same bank whose Chairman and CEO, Jamie Dimon, is bullying his regulators to drop their demand that his bank hold 25 percent more capital.
Where Corrigan and Wilmarth part paths in their latest papers is how to reform these off-balance sheet risks to the U.S. financial system. Corrigan proposes rule changes while Wilmarth sticks to his book’s well-documented case that the only lasting and meaningful way to reform the Wall Street megabanks is to restore the Glass-Steagall Act via Congressional legislation and permanently separate federally-insured banks from the trading casinos on Wall Street.
Given the corrupt revolving door between Wall Street and its regulators, and Wall Street’s long-held attitude that “it’s legal if you can get away with it,” clearly Wilmarth has the only workable reform idea.
