As far as I know, we never had one alive.,NHI know we can track them, and know how to avoid us.,NHI are linked to their craft in a way that borders on biological. Security rule is people that mention the agency name are killed. It's not a question, and it happened during my time. You'll hear more about them as news about the retaliation Dave comes out., If the US comes out directly and says "We have craft, we have bodies", it means we are on the verge of a serious global conflict like we've never seen before. My name is Cale Smart and I am a current Counseling Psychology graduate student studying at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington. I previously posted a research recruitment flyer and the kind redditors of this community immediately pointed out a serious oversight I had made with one of my recruitment criteria. If you're interested in that discussion and other information, that link is here (Previous research post). I have since changed that criterion to what it is now ("Have native Hawaiian ancestry"), and received IRB approval from my institution on this revision. Prior to this post, I reached out to the mods on this community and received permission to post again. As with last time, I am looking for 12 participants with native Hawaiian ancestry willing to be interviewed (virtual, 45-60 minutes) as a part of a study looking to explore how some individuals with native Hawaiian ancestry experience and express their emotions. Participants will be compensated $25 via a digital gift card and will contribute to adding some much needed Hawaiian voices to psychology literature. If you would like to participate, please let me know and I'll send you the recruitment informed consent survey link. You can either send me a message on this platform, or email me at cale.smart19@northwestu.edu. There you will find a lot more information about what I'm doing, what information I will be collecting, and how I will be using it/protecting it. 2024.05.19 21:34 HumbleInterest The Tragic Implications of Debling's Interest in the Northwest Passage
âThis book is on voyages to the North, where Lord Debling intends to travel.â âMiss Featherington, are you reading about the fabled Northwest Passage?â (S3 E4 11:16) Hi everyone! I
posted a comment about it right after season 3 dropped, and I have seen a bit of interest in the Northwest Passage on here recently. I thought that for those of you who didnât learn about it extensively in school in the small corner of Canada that I did, Iâd put together a little informative post on the extremely brief (and perhaps even inconsequential!) reference to the Northwest Passage in Episode 4. Iâll provide an overview of the Passage and its history, touch on some characteristics of travel to this region, and conclude with some completely speculative comments on the literary purpose of evoking the passage in this scene in Season 4.
Also, full credit to the other NWP enthusiasts who have been making posts about this and discussing it in other threads.
A quick note on the colonial nature of this post: Throughout this short post, I refer to several colonial expeditions to the land many of us call Canada. Although I attempt to be cognizant of my language, it is important to note that the Inuit people who live in the arctic regions that I reference have navigated the sea ice for thousands of years (Panikkar et al., 2018) and that the written history of this region are often hegemonic and euro-centric narratives that were formed within colonial frameworks.
More information on the Inuit and their culture, language, and traditions can be found here:
https://www.itk.ca/about-canadian-inuit/ References are at the end. If you like this post, you might also like
the speculative post I made about the influences of the Eros/Psyche quote in the which is also endless academic yapping.
Exploring the Northwest Passage- a bit of context In August of 1820, Lieutenant Edward Parry, a member of the British Royal Navy observed the dense ice and snow of arctic land and sea that was thought to be the location of the mysterious Northwest Passage. From a simple look, he knew that no ship in existence would be able to pass through ice sheets of such a great thickness and that extended for such a long distance (Brandt, 2011). Despite his pessimism, by Parryâs time, British sailors and explorers had been explicitly seeking the passage for hundreds of years (Williams & Costley, 2010; Day, 2006, p. xxiv), dreaming of exploiting the desirable economic prospect of a Western route from Europe to burgeoning Asian markets.
First encounters: When European sailors first encountered North America, it was in pursuit of a route west to Asia. They were, of course, incorrect about the location of Asia. And although a great deal of interest shifted to mapping the new continent, there was also an acknowledgement that there would be great economic benefits to finding a way
around this newly encountered landmass (Day, 2006). Over time, the reasons and methods of locating the Northwest Passage changed and evolved, but interest never truly went away.
Renewed British interest: Notably, at the end of the 15
th century, when the Ottoman Turkâs empire extended into the Mediterranean and eastward, European merchants were no longer allowed to move and trade freely (Day, 2006). Seeking new routes for the Pacific, European (and especially British) explorers turned West. The Northwest Passage was a concept, a theoretical possibility, for European explorers. It was seen as a potential commercial sea route to the trading markets that were already established and burgeoning in Asia. The Passage was a route with phenomenal economic potential, especially as European consumers sought spices, materials, salts, and woods from foreign markets (Williams & Costley, 2010).
Based on their knowledge of the Southern Hemisphere and the potential geography of the world, many believed that a similar passage would be reflected in the earthâs northern pole (Day, 2006). As a result, there was a massive potential for financial gain for colonial governments and individuals, should such a passage ever be found.
Public fascination: The passage became a point of national fascination for many members of the public. In pursuit of this fascination, many enthusiastic researchers âpersuaded persons of influence and wealth to send out discovery expeditionsâ (Williams & Costley, 2010, p. xv). With governments in Europe stabilizing, the emergence of an economy of cheap labour (lower class men who were willing to take on the dangerous work at sea), and the rapid development of ship technology, the 1600s was a prime time to set out on expeditions.
The fascination with the Passage continued for 300 years until a passage was finally navigated by sea in full in the 1900s. Over the course of history, Anthony Brandt describes the fascination with the Passageâs discovery as a tragedy (2011). He writes: âhubris, an all-too-human arrogance and pride that triggered a particular calamityâ (p. 5) as being the tragedy of the exploration for the Passage. Despite the fascination of the public with it, the ice âremained intractable, impenetrable, and, for those who challenged it, a kind of fateâ (p. 5) George Malcom Thomson reported that the Passage did not exist where popular imagination speculated it must be (Day, 2006). He noted: âthe whole enterprise was founded on a misapprehension, a geographical fiction, a fairy-tale ⊠and downright inventions that scholar manufacture to amaze themselvesâ (p. xxv).
The danger of the passage: Voyages to and in search of the passage were fraught. Many never returned, and those who did survive faced immense physical and mental challenges. There were, of course, significant difficulties with massive ice drifts and shelves. However, the relative location of the expeditions to the north pole led to issues with magnetic variation for compasses. Fog further complicated travel (Williams & Costley, 2010).
There were also extreme mental dangers to pursuing the NWP. MooSmithâs expedition in the mid-1700s reported âpotentially murderous quarrels between officersâ (Williams & Costley, 2010, p. xvi); John Franklin noted that the things that occurred on his ship âmust not be knownâ (p. xvi); and it was noted that on the McClure, Beckler, and Collinson expeditions, âtensionsâ erupted âas captains and subordinate officers exchanged threats of court martial, and some officers spend years under close arrest on their shipsâ (p. xvi).
In the time of Bridgerton: The end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 allowed for greater expeditions by the British Royal Navy (Day, 2006). This would have included surveys of a large portion of the global north and the Arctic. There were a large number of âsuccessfulâ (depending on how you define it) land expeditions that had made progress in producing surveys and maps of the region. Despite significant ongoing interest in discovering the Passage, in particular, little progress had been made. Later still, despite more advanced mapping by the Hudson Bay Company and expeditions by many notable sailors, there was still no route by the 1820s (Day, 2006).
What does it signify? If a character in Bridgerton was voyaging to the Arctic, it could take them less than a year to reach areas of the Hudson Bay that would be suitable for a scientific voyage. That in itself is not overly dangerous. However, the reference to the Northwest Passage is an interesting literary point. Of all of the places to voyage in the Arctic, even at the time, it would have been an immensely dangerous trip to set out on. The persistent lack of success for a solid 30 years after this season takes place may reference the fact that this is a voyage that Debling is unlikely to ever return from.
It doesnât help that Deblingâs odds are really stacked against him. He does not eat meat, one of the only renewable sources of food for arctic expeditions. There is little to no fresh naturally occurring produce (during the Coppermine expedition, the surviving crew members famously ate lichen to survive once they lost the favour of local indigenous groups and fur traders) and did not do well.
Certainly, it lends a very tragic potential element to the story. The Arctic, if mentioned alone, is not necessarily an overly dangerous location to travel to. Yes, marine travel in the 1800s was still a dangerous endeavour in its own right, let alone in an area as unnavigable by sea as the Arctic. However, the North, in many regions, had active whaling expeditions, Indigenous populations that were willing to trade and work with sailors, and (in some areas) active fur trades. If the purpose of Deblingâs travel was only to highlight his unique interests and sense of purpose, the show had many methods of doing so. The choice to reference a notorious and dangerous Northwest Passage, there is an extremely interesting element of danger that is introduced.
What would this potential marriage mean for Penelope? Of course, Penelopeâs name is a reference to the wife of Odysseus, who unwillingly takes ten years to return home after the Trojan war. In contrast to Colin, who returns with a steadfast conviction, Debling may represent a kind of eternal limbo for Penelope, should she marry him. Although Deblingâs trip is set to take 3 years, it would be hard to prove his death. Likely, she would be a widow for years, if not her entire life, before they were able to locate his ship. The HMS Terror was famously lost in 1845 and not located until 2016(!). As a result, Penelope would likely be stuck at home, awaiting his return, in the same tragic fashion of her namesake in Greek mythology.
As such, not only is there a potential tragic reference to Deblingâs future, but there is also a dark illusion to what Penelopeâs life may look like as his wife. Of course, this is all based entirely on implication, but it is an interesting act of speculative foreshadowing.
Thanks for reading!

Of course, Penelopeâs name may be a reference to the wife of Odysseus, who unwillingly takes ten years to return home after the Trojan war. In contrast to Colin, who returns with a steadfast conviction, Debling, as a traveler, may represent a kind of eternal limbo for Penelope, should she marry him.

2024.05.19 19:04 raied_lite Who and Where is DB Copper?
On November 24, 1971, an individual identified as Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 305, which was scheduled to fly from Portland to Seattleâa relatively short journey of about 30 minutes. Witnesses described Cooper as a middle-aged man dressed in a dark suit with a black tie adorned with a mother-of-pearl tie clip, and a crisply ironed white collared shirt. After taking his seat, he calmly lit a cigarette and ordered a bourbon and soda, paying in cash.
During the flight, Cooper passed a note to a 23-year-old flight attendant, catching her attention with the words, âMiss, youâd better look at that note. I have a bomb.â Although the exact wording of the note remains a mystery as Cooper retrieved it after the attendant read it, his demands were clear: $200,000 in ânegotiable American currencyâ (equivalent to about $1 million today), four parachutes, and a fueled truck waiting in Seattle to refuel the aircraft upon arrival.
Upon receiving the demands, the flight attendant informed the captain, and the airlineâs president authorized complete cooperation. To the other passengers, the delay in landing was attributed to mechanical issues.
At 5:39 p.m., the plane landed in Seattle, where an airline employee delivered the requested cash and parachutes. Cooper then permitted all passengers and two flight attendants to disembark. While the plane was refueling, Cooper detailed his plan to the remaining crew: a flight path southeast towards Mexico, with a planned stop for refueling in Nevada. Two hours later, the aircraft departed again. However, upon landing in Reno, Cooper's absence was discovered. The media mistakenly referred to him as âDB Cooper.â
Despite extensive efforts, Cooper was never located or heard from again. Neither the parachute nor the ransom money was ever found. In 1980, a family vacationing in Oregon stumbled upon several packets of the ransom money, identifiable by their serial numbers. This discovery prompted a thorough search of the area, yet no further clues emerged. There have been various speculations over the years, including one linking Cooper to the fictional character Don Draper from "Mad Men." In 2017, a parachute strap was found at a potential landing site attributed to Cooper, adding a new twist to the enduring mystery.

1.0. Since 2020, and the beginning of this decade of division,
the five richest men have seen their fortunes more than double, while almost five billion
people have seen their wealth fall.
1.1. 791 million
workers have seen their wages fail to keep up with inflation and have lost US$1.5 trillion over the last two years, equivalent to nearly a
month (25 days) of lost wages for each worker.
1.2.
Billionaires are US$3.3 trillion or 34%
richer than they were at the beginning of this decade of crisis, with their wealth growing three times as
fast as the rate of inflation.
1.3. Despite representing only 21% of the world population,
countries in the Global North own 69% of global wealth and are home to 74% of the worldâs
billionaire wealth.
1.4. Globally,
men own US$105 trillion more wealth than women --equivalent to
four times the size of the US economy.
1.5. If the current trend continues,
we will see the first trillionaire in 10 years, but we will not eliminate poverty for 230 years.
1.6.
If each of the five wealthiest men were to spend a million dollars daily, it would take them 476 years to exhaust their combined wealth.
1.7.
It would take 1,200 years for a female worker in the health and social
sector
to earn what a CEO in the biggest Fortune 100 companies
earns on
average in one year.
1.8.
The richest 1% own 43% of all global financial assets. 1.9.
A wealth tax on the worldâs millionaires and billionaires
could generate US$1.8 trillion dollars each year.
2.0. According to new data covering the first six months of 2023,
2023 is set to
shatter all records as
the most profitable year yet for big corporations. 148 of
the worldâs biggest corporations (where data is available) made nearly US$1.8
trillion in profits in the 12 months leading up to June 2023, which is 52.5%
higher than their average for 2018â21. Their windfall profits --defined as
profits exceeding the 2018â21 average by more than 20% -- are nearly
US$700bn.
Taxing these windfall profits at 90% would generate nearly
US$628bn in revenue.
2.1.
The biggest winners in terms of windfall profits have been
14 oil and gas companies whose profits in 2023 were 278% above the 2018â21 average,
representing US$190bn in windfall profits in 2023 and US$144bn in 2022.
2.2. For every US$100 of profit generated by 96 major companies between July
2022 and June 2023, US$82 was returned to shareholders in the form of stock
buybacks and dividends.
2.3. New Oxfam analysis of the World Benchmarking Allianceâs data on over
1,600 of the largest and most influential companies worldwide shows that
0.4% of companies are publicly committed to paying their workers a living wage and support payment of a living wage in their value chains partners. 2.4. Oxfamâs analysis of the World Benchmarking Allianceâs data of over 1,600
of the worldâs largest companies finds that
only 0.7% fully meet a global bar for collective bargaining --by disclosing collective bargaining coverage in their
workforce and their approach to supporting collective bargaining through their
business relationships (e.g., their suppliers).
2.5. New data on over 1,600 of the largest and most influential companies
reveals that
only 24% have a public commitment to gender equality. Just 2.6% of companies disclose information on the ratio of pay of women to men. 2.6.
Just 4% of the over 1,600 largest and most influential companies sampled
worldwide
fully meet the World Benchmarking Allianceâs social indicator on
responsible tax,
by having a public global tax strategy and
publicly disclosing corporate income taxes paid in all countries of residency.
2.7. Shell made US$29.2bn in profits between July 2022 and June 2023, an
increase of 222% compared to its average profits from 2018â21. Of those
profits, 87.7% were handed back to shareholders in the form of stock
buybacks and dividends.
2.8. Between July 2022 and June 2023, Brazilâs Petrobras made US$30.3bn in
profits --almost four times more than its average annual profits from 2019â2021.
It paid out 118% of those profits to shareholders in the form of dividends --
more than three times what Petrobras invested in capital expenditure.
2.9.
If the amount companies spent on dividends and shareholder buybacks for the richest 10% in 2022
was redistributed to the bottom 40% of the income distribution, global income inequality as measured by the Palma ratio could
decrease by 21.5% --equivalent to the actual drop in the Palma ratio observed
over 41 years.
2.10.
Just half of the amount from payouts to the top 10% in 2022
could reduce global poverty (defined as US$6.85 a day, 2017 PPP), and a mere 1.6%
of the payouts could eliminate extreme poverty as defined by the World Bank
(US$2.15 a day, 2017 PPP).
2.11.
The worldâs five largest corporations combined are valued at more than all the GDP of economies in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean combined.
3.0. Of the 10 largest listed companies in the world, seven have a billionaire as
either a principal shareholder or CEO. The total value (market capitalization) of
these companies is $10.2 trillion.
3.1. Of the 50 largest listed companies in the world, 17 (34%) have a billionaire
as either a principal shareholder or CEO. The total value (market capitalization)
of these companies is $13.3 trillion.
Bottom line: Phew!

The KANPAS V28 Mini Automotive Dashboard Car Ball Compass has been a game-changer for me. It's no liquid leaking housing design gives me peace of mind knowing it won't fail in harsh conditions. Plus, its shockproof and waterproof features make it perfect for off-road adventures. One of the standout features of this compass is how it reads - opposite to traditional pointers which can sometimes be confusing. It's straightforward to use and even has an interesting installation process that involves tearing off double-sided tape. However, there's a special reminder with this compass: ensure you confirm the correct direction outside the car before finding a suitable location inside the car. Also, avoid iron and magnetic items in the car from affecting the ball compass reading. Despite these small caveats, the KANPAS V28 Mini Automotive Dashboard Car Ball Compass is definitely worth considering for your navigation needs. https://preview.redd.it/9591fh21mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a3c4c87c4f653d8436d2b0f953ccb3da550a81c Bell Automotive's Illuminated Commander Compass is my go-to companion when navigating through the night. The automatic Magnetic Variation Adjustment (MVA) keeps me on track, with an easy mount on either the dash or windshield. Its light-up feature is especially useful during those late-night drives when the sun has tucked itself in for the night. While the compass is generally reliable and easy to use, I had a couple of hiccups during its installation. The suction cups that came with it didn't work quite as expected on my vehicle's vinyl dash, so I had to resort to a bit of glue to secure it properly. Additionally, the light button seemed a tad finicky and occasionally stopped working for no apparent reason. However, I appreciated the fact that I could still see the readings even when the light was off. Despite some minor issues, the overall experience with Bell Automotive's Illuminated Commander Compass has been quite positive. Its ability to keep me headed in the right direction, especially during nighttime adventures, has been a real lifesaver. If you're in the market for a reliable compass to navigate your drive, this one is definitely worth considering. Just be prepared to get creative with the installation process to ensure optimal performance in your specific vehicle. https://preview.redd.it/is8x7ak1mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8d991b39bb3dbb540243aa9eeb809a35451b86d I recently purchased a Low Profile Lighted LED Compass for my car, and while I had high hopes, my experience wasn't quite as smooth as I'd hoped. The best part of this compass is undoubtedly its sleek and low-profile design; it looks far more expensive than it actually is. Plus, the lighted dial makes reading the compass at night a breeze. However, the compass's primary function - accurately pointing to the north - just doesn't seem to work for me. Regardless of where I place it in my car or what direction I'm driving, the compass consistently points to the east or northwest, which makes it practically useless. I wouldn't necessarily say that this compass is a waste of money, as it does have a cool backlit display and a compact design. But if you're looking for an actual functional compass to use while driving, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. For $8, I guess you get what you pay for, but it's disappointing that something as simple as a compass can't handle a little interference from my car's electronics. https://preview.redd.it/6qa7yup1mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65b526c209e866f39de3e6cd272c60d1fffa7efc I recently added the Victor Products Inc Suction Cup Mini Compass to my car and it's been a game-changer for me on my roughest routes. The free-floating ball and liquid damping ensure quick settling, making navigation a breeze even when the road ahead gets bumpy. I love how the large letters make for easy reading at any angle, and the suction cup attaches easily to my windshield for quick access. The mini-size and suction cup feature make this compass incredibly portable, making it perfect for camping trips or weekend getaways. I also appreciate the sleek black color that matches my car's interior perfectly. However, I did have one issue: the compass tends to stick on one direction, which can be a bit frustrating at times. Overall, I'm happy with the Victor Products Inc Suction Cup Mini Compass and would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable navigation tool for their car. The quick settling and easy-reading features make it stand out from the rest, despite a minor problem we encountered with the compass direction. https://preview.redd.it/4nnj2272mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=385ea30f48a98b7041777d06643edee75b966554 I recently got my hands on the RINGGLO Car Compass Ball and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my navigation needs while driving. The high-quality ABS plastic material not only makes it sturdy but also gives it a sleek look that complements my car's interior perfectly. One of the things I love about this compass is its wide applicability - not just for cars, but also for boats, trucks, and caravans. Its easy-to-use design and self-adhesive mount make it incredibly convenient to install wherever you need it most. Plus, its compact size means it doesn't take up much space on your dashboard. However, there are a few cons to note as well. Firstly, the compass requires a horizontal position to ensure accurate readings, which might be challenging when driving over bumps or uneven surfaces. Secondly, it's advisable to keep the compass away from magnetic sources to maintain its accuracy, which could be inconvenient at times. In conclusion, the RINGGLO Car Compass Ball is an excellent tool for navigation, especially if you're looking for something stylish and functional. Its wide applicability and easy installation make it a valuable addition to any vehicle. Just remember to follow the guidelines provided to get the most out of this innovative compass. https://preview.redd.it/yqz2krf2mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f20ee1bcf25afb720fc2049f0146160876d57da I recently had the chance to test out the Sol Lensatic Compass, and I must say, it's a game-changer when it comes to navigating on outdoor trips. The compass is incredibly lightweight, making it perfect for backpacking and hiking adventures. The lensatic design allows for precise readings, and the large, luminous directional letters make it easy to read even in low light conditions. One of the standout features of this compass is its durability. The sturdy synthetic housing provides ample protection for the compass, while also making it easy to grip and maneuver. Additionally, the included cover acts as an extra layer of protection and helps make sighting easier. However, there are a few cons to consider. The magnetic floating compass can be somewhat difficult to ensure it's pointing north due to the thick liquid inside. Additionally, the grip on the heading dial is not as effective as it could be, making it a bit challenging to rotate. Overall, the SOL Lensatic Compass is an excellent navigation tool for those who love the outdoors. Its lightweight design and precise readings make it perfect for hiking, camping, and hunting adventures. While there are a few minor drawbacks, these are easily outweighed by its many positive features. https://preview.redd.it/1f5pfvt2mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9f9101f2a9909ef3b63505f783b3f1ec117f84b6 I recently got the chance to try out Bell Automotive's Lighted Compass and overall, it was quite an interesting experience. The mounting options were really user-friendly with suction cups for the windshield and adhesive tape for the dashboard, making it easy to install without causing any damage. One of the standout features was its unique disc-style floating dial and liquid damping, which proved incredibly useful in quickly settling the compass over bumpy roads. The display of eight directional points was also a definite plus, although I wish there was a way to illuminate the dial for night driving without having to hold the button down continuously. However, there are a few drawbacks that I experienced. First off, the compass struggled to provide accurate readings due to interference from the vehicle's metal elements, even when used outside the car. Additionally, the adhesive tape didn't hold up well in hot weather, causing the compass to lose its positioning. In conclusion, while the Bell Automotive Lighted Compass does have some interesting features, you might want to consider its inconsistencies before making a purchase. On the other hand, if you're primarily looking for a compass to use outside your car, or you drive a vehicle with minimal metal components, this compass might prove useful. https://preview.redd.it/hmeyr353mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d1279411e54049aaaf500634c7eea3b5ebcd3c2 When I first bought the 2pcs Car Vehicle Compass Ball Dashboard Self Adhesive Mount Navigation, I was skeptical about its accuracy and usability. But after using it for a few trips, I must say it has become an essential tool for navigation. The smooth and brightly colored surface along with the automatic rotation feature make it a breeze to follow the direction. It's perfect for those who prefer a more traditional method of navigation and it certainly adds a touch of retro charm to my car. One downside is that the compass can be a little sensitive to magnetic fields, so I have to be careful about where I place it. Additionally, direct sunlight might affect its performance, so I usually keep it tucked away when I'm parked under the sun. Overall, this compass mount has greatly enhanced my driving experience with its clear readout, easy installation, and stylish design. It's a reliable and affordable tool that's a must-have for any vehicle. https://preview.redd.it/dd5gsyi3mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a74ec1ddcf1c83641001a578ee54f23b7174b8a1 I recently got my hands on the Cammenga Official US Military Tritium Lensatic Compass Clam Pack 3HCS, and let me tell you, it's a game changer for anyone who loves spending time outdoors. As an avid camper and hiker, I've relied on GPS and other digital tools in the past, but there's just something about having a reliable, physical compass that you can trust in a pinch. This compass is built like a tank, with a sturdy metal housing that keeps it shockproof. It's also designed to withstand water, sand, and extreme temperatures, making it perfect for any adventure you can throw at it. One of my favorite features is the lens for magnification and the sighting wire for precise readings - these little details make all the difference when you're trying to navigate unfamiliar terrain. Now, let's talk about those dependable dial graduations. They have both mils and degrees for easy reading, and the mil-radians give you a high level of accuracy in your plotting and measuring. But the real star of the show is the tritium illumination, which provides you with a clear view of the compass in low light or darkness, without needing any external light sources. However, no product is perfect, and this compass does have some drawbacks. The belt clip on the carrying case is a bit flimsy, and it broke a few times during my tests. Additionally, the lens can be a bit difficult to focus, especially in low light conditions. Despite these minor issues, I wholeheartedly recommend the Cammenga Official US Military Tritium Lensatic Compass Clam Pack 3HCS to anyone who wants a reliable, accurate, and durable compass for their next outdoor adventure. Just make sure you keep an eye on that belt clip and bring along some spare batteries for your other electronic gear! https://preview.redd.it/vyx489u3mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=842db8e90d18a547c139fba240fe6a8e59c33672 I recently purchased the Bell Suction Cup Mini Compass and it's been an interesting addition to my vehicle. The compact design is perfect for mounting it on my windshield, and the free-floating ball and liquid damping help it settle quickly over bumpy roads. One thing I really appreciate about this compass is how easy it is to read. The large letters ensure that I can see the direction even when I'm not directly facing the compass. However, one downside is that the suction cup occasionally falls off if the vehicle is parked in direct sunlight. No big deal, though, as it's easy to reattach. Another standout feature of the Bell Suction Cup Mini Compass is its low cost. It may not be the most high-tech compass out there, but for the price, it works great. If you're looking for a simple, affordable solution to help you orient yourself while driving, this compass is definitely worth considering. https://preview.redd.it/5mqps884mb1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da01837cb5647888ed1357b4d553304ca50360dd I recently installed the Bell Automotive 22-1-29001-8 Digital Compass on my car's existing rear view mirror, and I've found it incredibly useful for long road trips. The device provides an effortless calibration process and efficiently displays 8 directional points without taking up much space on the mirror. One of my favorite features of this compass is its ability to connect with my car's touchscreen via a display light function. This has made navigation far simpler, especially during nighttime driving. However, I have experienced some difficulties with the compass occasionally, mainly regarding its readability in bright sunlight. Another drawback worth mentioning is the compass's accuracy issues, which seem to arise more frequently when installed in certain vehicles, such as my friend's Toyota Corolla. Fortunately, in my car, the compass has been working perfectly fine and has even helped me avoid getting lost on several occasions. In summary, if you're looking for a compact and feature-rich digital compass that doesn't obstruct your view while driving, the Bell Automotive 22-1-29001-8 Digital Compass might be worth considering. Just remember to consider its readability and accuracy limitations before making a purchase decision. It is native to Sth Africa and Namibia it is found in a wide area of the Kalahari Desert and also found in the desert of Botswana and Angola. You can find it growing in the shade of xerophytic bushes and also in a wide range of habitats. The Kalahari temperatures can soar well above 122°F -50°C and it can tolerate temperatures low as 26°F- -3°C, as this plant is very weather hardy. They main thing with growing H.gordonii is that it has a well drain soil. The is a sauser- shape with 5 lobed and a central depression. The flower can be upto 3" or 75mm in diameter and the flower is a pale straw, pale purple to a dark maroon and with a group of 1- 4 flowers. It flowers form late Autumn through Winter. Pollination is done flies. It take upto 5 yrs for the plant to be mature enough to flower. I have two of these H.gordonii that are cutting off my original plant that I lost a few yrs ago and they would be at least 5 yro and they took quite along time to get situated, as they were half the size. Propagation is best with seeds, as cutting can be a bit of a hit and miss. These were branches off my original plant and there wasn't much of a wound for it to heal up. I'm hoping my other Hoodia will flower this yr also, but the good thing is that they are in good health. Hope this information on Hoodia.gordonii has been helpful. :) submitted by Tazza107 to cactusandsucculents [link] [comments] |

Previous Suzanne thought it was absolutely brilliant of me to put books on a flash drive for Sun. She explained that Sun wasnât as sophont (her word, not mine) as she might seem, more of a repository of information, but she was fairly intelligent. It was how she was able to connect Andrew being in pain to the fact that I was friends with Andrew, and that I would want to know that he was in trouble. Apparently some of Sunâs species had given some âwisdomâ to others in the past and it had made its way into mythology.
The key fact was that she was not smart enough to protect herself and her kind from the clever, organized poachers. With that information in mind, it was fascinating for me to think of how Sun took in and organized what she learned. It was almost as if she was a walking, talking library.
On the topic of tours, my first one went wonderfully, and Iâm almost hoping Suzanne lets me do more of them. I know not all the tourists are going to be as awesome as these people were, but Suzanne gave me a lot of slack when it comes to dealing with them. She actually said that being a smartass is not grounds for dismissal, and that if Iâm sarcastic or facetious to guests who are being âdaftâ and they complain, she really doesnât care. Is this the perfect job for me or what?
There were four guests in this party, two adults who were sisters and two children of one of the women, brothers aged thirteen and seventeen. The tour was a birthday gift for the older of the boys from his aunt, since apparently he was passionate about animal protection and conservation.
When they arrived at the front gate, I was sitting at Andrewâs desk, going over the booklet of information one last time. When the visitors pressed the button that sounded the alert buzzer, I tucked away in a drawer and let them in. I did have a cheat sheet with information about the animals on my phone just in case, a brief notation of each of them and which enclosure they were in, but I really didnât need to use it.
Exiting through the front door, I saw them walk up the path toward me. âHi, Iâm Ripley,â I said, holding out a hand toward the woman closest to me.
She shook it firmly. âIâm Denise. This is my sister Carla and my nephews, Wesley and Jason,â she said, motioning to each of them in turn.
âI heard itâs your birthday,â I said to Wesley, giving him a smile. âYouâre interested in animal conservation?â
âBack where we live, yeah,â he said, nodding. âThe animals that youâve got here are incredible. I canât wait to see them.â
âWell, I canât wait to show them to you,â I said. âRight this way.â
I led them on the path around the building, toward enclosure one. Despite the horrific memories of the animal killing Stanleyâs friends, I knew it was just an animal, and I had to push past my feelings on what had happened. Keeping a small smile on my face, I motioned to the enclosure. âFiercely territorial and amazing hunters, despite their large size, theyâre arboreal and known to dart from tree to tree with barely a sound. This is one of only about two thousand left in existence.â
âTwo thousand, three hundred and fifty six at last count,â spoke Wesley, his eyes on the trees.
I blinked, surprised and impressed. âWell that was fantastic. Do you plan on stealing my job when you graduate?â
Wesley looked at me with a grin. âNah, everyone knows Suzanne only offers humans this gig. And I want to help animals like this one get off the endangered species list. The zoos are great for awareness and fundraising, but then the money has to go somewhere. I want to be doing the real work.â
âThatâs really great,â I told him. âI wish you all the best in that career path.â At that, we saw the animal climb down from the tree, wandering a few yards from the tree line. This was because 90% of the time, when humans were at their enclosure and making noise, whether it was speaking to each other or calling out to the animal, it was someone bringing them prey to eat. Or, in my case, enrichment toys to play with.
âWhoa,â Wesley whispered.
âHow close can we get?â spoke up Jason.
âThe warding starts at the fence,â I told him with a small gesture. âSo, just there.â
Both boys wandered closer and I glanced at their parents. It seemed that Suzanneâs zoo had a serious reputation for high quality invisible walls, because they didnât look worried in the slightest about the boys being hurt or killed.
âThey prefer dense forest as their home and have been known to make their nests in trees up to twenty meter in the air,â I continued. âAnd when hunting, theyâve been seen dropping eight meters straight down. They have incredibly dense yet flexible musculature, which allows them to tackle their prey without injuring themselves.â
There was more information about the animal that I continued to rattle off, though Wesley chimed in at certain points with the info I was about to convey. That was highly entertaining and very cool. When Iâd been in school, Iâd never met anyone who had my level of passion about endangered animals. I wondered if things were better where these folks came from, but realized that considering there were so few of these animals left, I guessed not.
The animal paced a little bit, seemingly waiting to see if we were the kind of humans that came bearing food, before deciding we werenât and climbing back up into the trees as easily as I would climb some stairs.
As we moved onto enclosure two, Jason spoke up. âAre there any animals here we can touch or feed or something?â
I sighed inwardly before slowing to a stop. âWell, can you show me your hands?â Jason looked bemused, holding out his hands. âI meanâŠthey both look like theyâre in great shape. You can stand to lose one.â
The two women chuckled and Wesley smirked as Jason shoved his hands into his pockets. âVery funny.â
Grinning, I started walking again. âThe animals here are all carnivores and all predators. You get to see them, but thatâs it.â
âAlright.â
When we reached enclosure two, I started on my next spiel. âWeâve got three reanimated dead in this enclosure,â I spoke. They were just coming out from the trees as we arrived, presumably having heard our approach. âMarissa, Connor, and Bradley. They were donated by families who knew where they would be exhibited. Their next of kin, whoever they are, canât stand the idea of putting them down. But we need to make sure they donât have access to corpses, because one of them plus one corpse equals two of them.â
âThey eat flesh though, donât they?â Wesley asked.
I nodded. âOh, yeah, but itâs from bodies that have already been dismembered. Thereâs no chance of them being affected by the transformation because itâs all parts.â
âOh, got it.â
The creatures with blueish-white skin had superhuman strength, which is why they qualified for the security of Suzanneâs zoo. They also were likely the source of any Earth tales of people being brought back to life as zombies, specifically draugr, according to my research. They smelled like rotting flesh, so even as I kept talking about them and giving a background to the people they used to be, we were quick to move on once Wesley had gotten a good, long look at them.
âEnclosure fourâs animal is a vampiric spirit. Heâs a small, hairy humanoid creature with pointed ears. He wears a hat, and if he somehow loses it, he freaks out,â I said.
âThey eat horses,â Wesley noted. âAlso anything that gives them the chance to sit on it, usually catching them by surprise while theyâre sleeping.â
The creature came out from the brush, giving us a suspicious look. He wasnât in his humanoid form though; for some reason, heâd chosen to shapeshift to a dog.
I nodded. âYep, indeed. Once the prey is dead, then heâll eat it, and he has a voracious appetite. We have two wolves and two bears in the forest, which is one of the reasons Iâve got some self-defense items,â I said, patting my belt where my pepper spray (rated for bear) and my taser. âBut the wards keep them out of this area of the zoo, so itâs really not much of a worry. Itâs also a known shapeshifter, preferring the form of a dog, as you can see, as well as a cat, a snake, or even white butterflies, though the last one is rare.â
âThe white butterflies are supposed to be a sign of good luck,â Wesley said, glancing to me. âToo bad we got the dog.â
âYeah, otherwise you might be able to talk your mom into getting scratch-offs on your way home, huh?â
Wesley smirked at me.
The next enclosure was Spike, and he was waiting for us, dripping wet from having just emerged from the lake. I gave the introductory information about him, which included his propensity for eating animal eyes, nails, and teeth. âRecently, Iâve given him some enrichment activities, and I learned he likes artichokes, pecans, and hazelnuts,â I said, taking a bag out from my cargo shorts. âWesley, do you want to toss this bag into the enclosure?â
The boyâs eyes widened and he nodded excitedly. He took a look into the paper bag before wrapping down the top to make sure nothing would fly out. Then he chucked it underhand past the fence. It landed a few yards from Spike, who waddled over to it quickly and tearing the bag open, spilling out the prizes inside. As the animal ate the pecans and hazelnuts, Wesley asked, âHowâd you figure out he likes those?â
âItâs not all about taste,â I told him. âItâs mainly the difficulty of getting them out of the shells. Heâs used to having to work for the parts of his prey he likes the most, so this mimics that activity, and he enjoys the process. I tried a bunch of different foods to find a few he liked.â
âCool,â Wesley murmured, staring at him.
We watched Spike eat until heâd finished and then he went back into the woods, leaving us to move onto enclosure five. Japanese camellia were plentiful here, a type of pink flower, and that was because they grew anywhere near one of his species made their den. âThis girl spends most of her time in the lake also,â I said, as the creature made its way toward the fence separating us from it. âBut as you can see, sheâs just as curious as the rest about what weâre doing here and whether we have food for her. She eats fish mostly, but she also regularly gets live prey.â
This creature was a spider-like monster, having six legs with long claws on each, and the head of an ox with two sharp horns. She was capable of shapeshifting to look like a human, but I guessed that she wasnât fond of it, since I hadnât yet seen her in that form.
âShe prefers the easy way of catching prey, so to speak, by hiding in the lake and pouncing when something comes for a drink of water,â I explained. âApparently humans are some of her favorite prey. She has an advantage of being able to spit poison, which often hits her prey in the eyes. But itâs usually used in defense rather than offense, since she secretes a limited amount.â
âWhat kind of animal would even go after something like this?â Jason asked, staring at her.
âNever discount one of its own species when youâre thinking about what might attack an animal,â I replied. âThere are places that are breeding all of the animals here, but competition for mates is common. That means an advantage in a fight, like poison or venom, can make or break who the winner is.â
âAh, gotcha.â
âIt canât spit past the warding, right?â Carla suddenly asked.
âOh, no,â I assured her. âWeâre fine. The wards wouldnât let anything cross over.â She nodded, appeased.
The animal in enclosure six was the ginormous seal-hippo, Fiona, and she was looking at us as if she was imagining sprinkling us with herbs and spices and stuffing us in an oven. âThis girl is one animal Iâm going to work on enrichment activities for next,â I told them. âShe prefers to feed on crayfish, though sheâs happy to eat any humans that wander into her territory. Sheâll even make a sound like a baby crying to reel us in. Iâve heard it a bunch of times.â
âCan you get her to make the sound?â Jason asked, perking up.
I grinned. âNot on command, sorry.â
âWhat enrichment are you thinking of trying?â Wesley asked.
âPossibly food placed in puzzle feeders,â I told him, âsince she has claws that are pretty dexterous. Maybe a piñata made out of newspaper with flour inside, or a scarecrow that mimics a human.â
âAwesome,â he muttered.
After a little more educational tidbits, we moved onto Yuiâs enclosure. âWhat is that?â Wesley asked, smiling.
âI got Yui the closest thing I could to a ping-pong ball,â I replied. âShe quite likes it.â
âThatâs so funny,â he said as she came out of the trees in her spider form. âI mean, the idea of her being a bloodthirsty hunter who seduces men to their deaths and eats them alive, but then on the other hand, she likes playing with something like this.â
âIt is a little funny,â I agreed. âBut when it comes down to it, all the animals here enjoy activities besides hunting.â
âShe can shapeshift to look human, right?â asked Jason, trying to be casual about knowing something factual like his nerdy brother.
I nodded. âShe looks like a woman from a region of Earth called Japan. And sheâll use strategies like holding out a hand to shake to get you closer. She tried that on me when I first got here but, as you can see,â I said, holding up my hands and waving them, âI didnât fall for it.â
The boys both laughed as they got closer to the fence, watching her slowly pace near the trees.
Next was Sun, but she didnât make an appearance as I spoke about her species. âWellâŠunfortunately we canât guarantee that every animal comes out to say hi,â I sighed. âButâŠoh wait, here she is.â
The green lion with several horns and many eyes along her flank came out from the forest. âHello,â she spoke.
âHi, Sun,â I replied. âWe have visitors.â
âWhatâs that?â Wesley asked suddenly, pointing at the small plastic bag that was still where Iâd left it.
âOh! That is Sunâs enrichment,â I said with a smile. âI put dozens of books on a flash drive and found that she can read them just like sheâd read a shelf of books.â
Wesleyâs eyes widened. âWow. I donât think Iâve read about anyone trying that before. Thatâs really cool.â
âThe books are new and interesting,â Sun spoke, drawing our attention. âIâm grateful for them.â
I nodded to her. âYouâre quite welcome.â
The next animal, unfortunately, wasnât there, and we waited around for ten minutes as we discussed him. He was large and reptile-like with red eyes, with its hind legs and tail making him look vaguely like a kangaroo. Then, enclosure ten was a terrifyingly disturbing creature, the not-a-centaur with no skin, that Iâd only seen a few times while walking my route. It gave a good demonstration of its ferocity, showing its sharp teeth and snapping at us a few times.
âIâm thinking of trying salt licks and other horse enrichment like a big bouncy ball,â I told Wesley, whose eyebrows went up at that. âMaybe give him more things to forage like scattered grains or a box filled with pinecones and seeds. Foraging is a huge part of a horseâs life in the wild, and humans have to do a lot of activities like that to keep pet horses busy. Of course, he also loves the little salt-water lake that was built for him.â
We spent some time looking at the animal before moving past our last stop, the empty enclosure of the animal was stolen. Carla glanced at me with a sad smile, knowing what had happened, it seemed. I gave her a nod as we continued on our way, walking into the office. âSo, I hope everyone enjoyed themselves!â I said with a smile.
âThat was the coolest birthday present Iâve ever gotten,â Wesley said, looking to Denise. âThanks so much, seriously.â
âIt was my pleasure,â she said with a nod. âIâd never been here before, and knew Iâd find it fascinating. Thank you for the educational aspect,â Denise said, glancing at me. âI learned quite a lot.â
âHappy to hear it,â I said, returning the nod.
As I escorted the guests out of the zoo and locked the door behind them, I reflected on how much Iâd changed. The first time Iâd seen Yuiâs tarantula form, Iâd nearly passed out from fear. Now here I was, walking tourists around like it was no big deal. Humans really can adapt to anything, it seems.
That afternoon, Suzanne had texted me that she was coming by after my shift, and I met her in Andrewâs office, shutting the door to the security room behind me. âHowâs Andrew?â I asked first thing.
âHeâs doing well,â she said with a wide smile. âBack on non-hospital food. Heâs allowed to order food on his phone, and to hear it from him, thatâs the best news heâd received in a long time.â
I chuckled. âI guess some clichĂ©s are true for a reason.â
âIndeed.â She took a breath. âAll right. RipleyâŠI would like to discuss something with you.â
My face went slack at the serious tone in her voice. âIâm not⊠Am I being fired?â
âWhat? No!â she exclaimed. Then she chuckled softly. âNo, itâs nothing like that. Just, here, letâs have a seat.â Suzanne walked over to the couch and sat at one end, and I took the other. âThereâs something I need to tell you. Something Iâve kept from you, that I wanted to keep from you until you found your sea legs here.â
âWellâŠI have,â I said with a nod. âSo, what is it?â
Suzanne took a breath. âI knew your mother.â
The words hung in the air for a moment before making their way to my ears. It was a perfectly logical sentence, and yet it didnât make any sense. âWhat?â I finally managed.
âWhen you graduated college, I decided to move the zoo from Italy to within driving distance of your home,â she said softly. âNear enough to your town that youâd see the advert. We ignored any other applicants and I hoped youâd apply. Actually, I expected youâd apply. Not just for the money, but considering the field you wanted to go into. As soon as Iâd found out your major, I knew.â
âWait, wait, wait,â I said, holding up a hand. I pinched the bridge of my nose. âHow do you know Patricia?â
âShe owned the zoo before I did,â Susan explained. âFourteen years agoâŠshe was working to track an injured animal that we could bring into the zoo and she was killed by poachers.â
My heart calcified in my chest and a lump lodged in my throat. As my breaths became shaky, I stared at her in shock. âSheâŠsheâs really dead?â
âYou suspected?â she asked softly.
âItâŠâ I swallowed hard. âWe had her declared legally dead afterâŠI donât know, seven years I think. My dad wanted to go after her for child support, but the police saidâŠthey said they couldnât findâŠâ Tears came to my eyes and I blinked them back before I met Suzanneâs gaze. âShe owned the zoo?â
Suzanne nodded. âIt was her baby, youâd say. When Patricia passed, I inherited it, which weâd discussed beforehand, a legal just-in-case that I never expected her to need. Iâm under the impression that you were told she went to Africa for her photography career, but she was in fact going to remote areas back in my home world almost every time.â
âBut I-I saw the photos,â I said, my eyes narrowing. âYouâre telling me she put on a show of getting pictures that someone else took for us to see every time she visited? Did my dad even know?â
âI suppose thatâs an accurate way to put it, putting on a show. And no, your father was never told. Itâs not the way of things to tell humans unless itâs necessary. I wonât bore you with the details, but us and humans, weâre distant relatives, so we can still have children. But it wasnât planned. Your mother fell in love with your father despite herself; she hadnât meant to find love. Then she became pregnant with you andâŠwell, the rest is history.â
âI think she had a different definition of love than the one I have,â I said tightly. âYouâd think sheâd have put her survival as more of a priority. Put being with the man she âlovedâ as a priority. Her kids needed her. I needed her. She signed up when she became a mom. She couldâve screwed up all the time but she couldnât even manage that one job: be there. When I was in the hospital, I kept thinking, âWhere is she?â and now youâre telling me that she put these animals above being there for her kids, and this whole time sheâs been dead.â
âThe hospital?â she asked, furrowing her brows.
âNever mind,â I said tersely, averting my gaze.
Suzanne hesitated before she nodded slowly. âIâm sorry for your loss, and not just for her death, Ripley,â she told me. âPatricia wasâŠwell, a âfree spiritâ would be putting it gently. She always assumed the world would be there for her whenever she needed it.â
Staring at her for a long moment, I shook my head. âWhy? Why come here and hire me?â
âI thought that would be obvious,â she said, smiling. âYour mother was so passionate about this place and once I found out your college major, I figured you would be as well.â
âDid you know that I hate her?â At that, Suzanneâs expression froze on the edge of shock. âSheâŠshe left us,â I whispered. âDidnât tell us who she was or what she really did for a living and gave us no closure. And even when she was here, it was just visiting. Her real home was her work. She could give me all the presents she wanted, but even when she was here, half the time she was still on her computer doing work. Itâs not like that stereotype of never making it to my tennis practice or something; itâs that it always felt like she was only partially here, even when I was sitting next to her. I donât even know if I appreciate her turning me into a wildlife fanatic because itâŠitâŠmakes me feel like Iâm close to her in a way thatâs just infuriating. She loved the animals more than she loved us.â
âOh, Ripley-â
âDonât,â I said, shoving myself to my feet. âDonât try to convince me otherwise.â
âI wasnât going to,â she said quietly. I pursed my lips. âI was going to say that Iâm sorry that was the case. Your mother wasâŠflawed, just like any other person. She had two loves in this world: her family and her work. And often, her work overcame her, her zeal for environmentalism getting in the way of being a good mum. She left your father trying to fill the role of two parents, holding your family together. You and your brother and your father, you all deserved better than that.â
My lower lip quivered but I bit down on it hard. It wouldâve been a lot easier for me if sheâd been speaking from a place of clueless reassurance about all this. But everything she said was making sense and that meant I didnât have someone in front of me to be angry with.
âWhy didnât you tell me when Andrew hired me?â I sighed, sitting back down on the couch.
âWell, like I said, I wanted you to find your sea legs,â she said with a small smile. âI didnât want the truth affecting whether or not you wanted to work here, whether you wanted to stay here after finding out about what the animals are. It wouldâve complicated things, the emotions youâll have to work through now that you know the truth. Whether or not you decide to give another tour, you also know what theyâre like. Thatâs the benchmark I wanted you to reach before you found out about who you are.â
I narrowed my eyes. âWho I-â My face went slack. âWait.â
Suzanne nodded slowly. âYouâre only half human. Your brother too.â
The room seemed to tilt on an axis for a moment. âThat means Iâm also halfâŠwhat?â
âWe call ourselves Eldritch, these days,â she replied.
My eyes bugged out. âWhat?â I exclaimed. âSo youâre all, like, gods or something?â
Suzanne burst out laughing. âOh no, goodness, no,â she chuckled. âItâs just a word. We live in a very different world from this one, and a few generations ago we discovered the word and it made its way into our lexicon. But it does mean you can see all the animals. Indeed you did, on the tour you gave.â
âWait, no, I had the glasses thatâŠâ I stopped. âDid those glasses do anything?â
She gave a sly smile and shook her head. âNot a thing. You made incredibly quick progress, and then when it came time for the tour, all you needed was to expect to see the animals, and you did.â
Genetics. Thatâs what Andrew had said during our interview, that part of how many animals you could see was determined by genetics. I guess having a mother who was originally from the other dimension gave me all the genes I needed to see everything here. âCould IâŠvisit your world?â I asked tentatively. âYou said that my mom took photos of the animals there. Could IâŠâ My voice trailed off, not even sure if or how I wanted to finish that sentence.
âThose who are half human, especially those who are raised on Earth, donât come visit,â she said gently. âI could show you some photos of other animals, and I could loan you as many books as youâd like, but itâs simply not a place where youâd be safe.â
âOh,â I said, leaning into the couch cushion as I pictured the animals in the zoo. âYeah, actually thatâŠmakes sense.â I paused. âSo, what now?â
âItâs up to you,â she said. âI wanted to wait until I was sure you were comfortable with your position here, and then put the ball in your court. And so it is. What do you want to do now?â
What did I want to do? It wasnât that difficult a question, just a deep, serious one.
I wanted to thrive, as the animals did. This is my enrichment now, working at an incredible, wonderful, terrifying zoo. The experience so far hasnât been perfect, and I know there are risks, but life isnât about staying safe. Itâs about learning new things and making a difference in the world. And, if youâre lucky, having a job thatâs something really special.

2024.05.19 03:14 Global_Regular152 When will we get a medieval total war remake?
Mtw2 has been on of the most respected, bought, modded and loved game ever in the franchise. The game has been out for 18 years and still has a community. But yet weâre not getting a remake any time soon. Iâm getting tired of the original at this point. The game get repetitive so easily since the ai does a selective of choices when leads to the same thing. I have thousands of hours on this game. Well if we were going to get a remake hereâs the things I would want
- More cites. So you know how in the expansion pack thereâs more cites then in the grand campaign? Like the holy lands are way more specific. And especially in the Americaâs. I would want that all in the grand campaign. Like Britain for example in the grand campaign it takes me less then 10 turns to conquer the British isles but in the expansion itâs so much harder. Speaking of the expansion pack we should also add culture with religion. It makes sense to have both
- More factions. There so much potential in the map like in Iberia of course thereâs Spain and Portugal why not add Aragon? Theyâre right there with the same exact land in history but no there just ârebelsâ which makes no sense. Same with Norway they have Oslo but no there just rebels. Same with Sweden they have Stockholm but no theyâre just rebels. Same with Finland they have Helsinki but no theyâre just rebels. Same with Ireland they have Dublin but no theyâre just rebels. Same with wales they have Inverness but no theyâre just rebels same with Estonia and Lithuania I could go on for a long time but Iâm going to stop there. The map feels dead at some points
- Bigger map. Kind of the same with number 1 but we should expand more like Iceland would be fun same with the folk islands. Especially expanding Norway,Sweden and finland more instead of them have little pieces of land. But not to big like empire or something I want there to be a lot of cites in a good size map like. I want the map to be like europe(of course with North Africa and the Middle East)
- The ability to make a branch out of your fraction that would be managed by the AI kind of like a vassal. You know what I mean? Like itâs so annoying going on the crusade then losing the settlement 5 turns later. Instead of that you could make a branch like the Holy State of England(made up name) where you give up that land and the surrounding cities to make a new faction which would be loyal to you and pay you tributes. You could make your 2nd son the head of the faction. Notability the faction would be controlled by a AI and after itâs made you canât unmake it or change the faction leader. Also since weâre talking about sons they should add the ability to change your faction heir itâs present on the mobile but not on PC.
- Events. So again you know how in the expansion pack thereâs events like Willam Wallace showing up? I would want that like key points in history like the Turks getting the grand canon or the French Revolution where thereâs new faction that tries to take your faction kind of like the baron alliance? That would be interesting and challenging this would probably only in hard mode
- Trading and prisoners . Once you establish trade rights, map information and military rights itâs dead after that. Besides settlements. So instead of having 3 options release, ransom, execute we should add capture where you would keep the prisoners(Along with generals and family members)within your army which would slow you down and later transfer them into settlements where you could bargain them in diplomatic missions. this would also add more building options.Notably this would lower your security and lower public happiness.
- Also better graphics obviously. But I donât want change to the gameplay mechanics theyâre already pretty good.
Thatâs all I would want. What else would you guys want from a remake?

Please note: The bill HB 1238, which is set to take effect on July 1, 2024, is expected to be a focal point in the upcoming town hall meetings. For your convenience, a summary from the ACLU of Indiana is included below.
Criminal Legal Reform
Competency Evaluation (Victory!)
Our lawmakers took steps this session to ensure that defendants who donât have the capacity to stand trial will not languish in Indianaâs jails. HB 1238 will streamline the process for a qualified mental health professional to examine a defendant, testify on their capability to understand the criminal proceeding, and assist with preparation of the defense. This improvement will protect our most vulnerable Hoosiers from being unjustly swept away in the criminal legal system.
The below bill didn't make its way out of committee....
SB 136 - Judicial Transparency Requires the office of judicial administration to compile, transmit, and publish the public safety and judicial accountability report containing certain information about judicial officers who exercise criminal jurisdiction.
Town halls: Elkhart - June 8th Michigan City - June 22nd - Michigan City Public Library
Fort Wayne - July 20th - Allen County Public Library
Gary - Aug. 17th - IU Northwest Savannah Center - Bergland Auditorium
Helpful guide: a_guide_to_taking_action_at_third_house_meetings.pdf (aclu-in.org) Note: This post serves to inform and raise awareness about a recent Indiana statute that simplifies the process for mental health competency assessments. It also aims to highlight multiple avenues for offering feedback to legislators. The dissemination of this content is strictly informational and is not intended to provoke political controversy or debate. submitted by

2024.05.19 00:08 aardbarker History question about 1949 refugee plans
Iâm reading âThe War of Returnâ by Adi Schwartz & Einat Wilf, and I came across a bit of history I didnât know about: Israelâs two offerings in 1949 to accept some of the Palestinian refugees (in one case, the entire Gaza Strip). Below is an excerpt from the book. Why isnât this talked about more?
ââŠIsrael articulated two important plans in the summer of 1949 [OP: to ease tensions around the refugee problem]. The first was named the Gaza Plan, and it proposed transferring the Gaza Strip, in Egyptian hands at the end of the war, to Israeli sovereignty. Israel informed the United Nations that it was willing to grant Israeli citizenship to all the Arabs in the Gaza Strip, both original residents and displaced persons, and committed to take care of their resettlement and rehabilitation. Israel estimated that there were 180,000 Arabs in the Gaza Strip; the true number was closer to 300,000.
âBen-Gurion wrote in his diary that the plan would grant Israel strategic assets, chiefly the removal of the Egyptian army from the Gaza Strip and the addition of relatively fertile land. It would also enable Israel to argue that it had thereby done its part toward solving the refugee problem. Israel estimated that if it absorbed and naturalized refugees in the Gaza Strip, the size of the countryâs Arab minority would be more or less equivalent to the one it would have had under the 1947 partition plan. In exchange, Israel demanded comprehensive international aid to cover the inevitable costs involved.
âThe US administration supported the plan but wanted Israel to compensate Egypt for the territory. Ben-Gurion consented to that as well and offered to transfer to Egypt a part of the northwest Negev along the border. But Cairo objected, claiming that the plan would only serve Israelâs interests, expanding its territorial foothold without solving the refugee problem in its totality. âNot only would Egypt not give up the Gaza district,â said the head of the Egyptian delegation at the Lausanne peace conference, âbut [it] would firmly demand the southern Negev.â Political leaders in Cairo denounced the plan as âa forerunner of Israeli aggression against Gaza,â informed Washington of their formal rejection, and repeated their insistence that the refugees had a right to return to their homes.
âA short while thereafter, Israel articulated another idea: the 100,000 Proposal, offering to absorb 100,000 Arab refugees into Israel in the context of a peace treaty. The Israeli ambassador in Washington, Eliahu Elath, stated explicitly that the Israeli government intended thereby âto demonstrate [its] cooperation with the USâ and that the purpose was for Israel to do its part in solving the refugee problem. President Truman sounded satisfied with the plan, and one of his advisors noted that the president was âextremely pleased ⊠[and] thinks [the] 100,000 offer may break [the] deadlock.â But the Arabs rejected this proposal, too. An Arab diplomat in Lausanne called it âa mere propaganda scheme.â The Arabs claimed that the plan was âless than a tokenâ and that the Jews could not oppose the return of a large number of Arab refugees on economic grounds while encouraging the mass immigration of Jews.
âBoth of Israelâs plans showed its willingness to contribute its share as part of a comprehensive agreement where all sides to the war would contribute theirs. For the Arabs, the humanitarian suffering of the refugees did not play a significant role, useful mostly as a political weapon against Israel. American diplomats at the Lausanne Conference received the impression that the Egyptians demonstrated âcomplete indifference [to the] fate [of the] Gaza refugees.â A senior representative of UNRWA stated in this context that âArab leaders donât give a damn whether the [Palestinian] refugees live or die.â
âNow and then, the Arab diplomats openly admitted to the Israelis that they had only placed the refugee question at the top of their agenda as a ruse. An Egyptian official told his Israeli counterpart that in the previous year, thousands of his countrymen had been killed in a cholera epidemic, and the government in Cairo had not batted an eyelid. âWhy should we care for the refugees now?â the man wondered. By rejecting both Israeli plans, the Arabs were sending a message that the issue of the refugees was examined only in the context of its service to the political cause of undermining Israel.
âSummer 1949 marked the end of attempts by the Arabs and the international community to impose a mass return on Israel without a peace treaty. The United States and Britain understood that this would not happen, and after the Arabs rejected Israelâs proposals for a partial return, Washington and London began considering other solutions, first and foremost the economic rehabilitation of the refugees in Arab countries.â

2024.05.18 23:18 Tesa_Tesanovic1988 Technology Sovereignty Influence on the Development of Emerging Markets
Rapid technological development and global big tech have contributed to the widening of the gap between rich and developing countries. Social media networks, fintech, and the internet as a whole have become powerful tools for collecting and using personal and business data. It is no secret that big tech has been collecting, using, and trading personal data without peopleâs consent solidifying the competitive advantage.Rapid technological development and global big tech have contributed to the widening of the gap between rich and developing countries. Social media networks, fintech, and the internet as a whole have become powerful tools for collecting and using personal and business data. It is no secret that big tech has been collecting, using, and trading personal data without peopleâs consent solidifying the competitive advantage.
Prometheus, teacher in every art, brought the fire that hath proved to mortals a means to mighty ends. The data collected has been used to target users with ads and commercial messages for profit. As a result, these digital technologies have been fueling Digital Colonialism, where the rich are fortifying their financial dominance. This phenomenon provides large technological companies from the West a tool for controlling emerging markets and extracting profits and has caused the stagnation of underdeveloped nations.
Unarguably, big tech has an influence over the policies that govern how they do business. In other words, they use their power and influence to set the business standards and rules however it suits their interests. Consequently, technology giants often venture into other industries that were initially dominated by state and local organizations. Often it is the case that governmental and local private organizations cannot compete with large-scale technological companies due to the sheer volume of their resources (Coleman, 2019).
Large, monopolistic companies use their limitless resources to dominate underdeveloped markets. A good example is Uber, which has been running local taxi services out of business wherever they set their operations, like in South Africa. Furthermore, the advertisement and marketing sectors have seen this in action too, as Facebook and Google have brought local media in developing countries on the verge of extinction (Kwet, 2019).
What is Technology Sovereignty?
Technology sovereignty is a countryâs ability to develop and implement technology crucial for its technological independence and welfare. It also includes alternative ways of acquiring technology, such as provisioning it from other nations without causing dependence or violating the countryâs freedom (Crespi et al., 2021). For a nation to achieve technology independence, it must be able to avoid unilateral dependency, as we see in the case of developing countries where large-scale technology corporations entirely control the infrastructure. In essence, technology sovereignty is reached through independent technological and scientific development, or by adopting external technological solutions but without developing a dependent relationship with the external partner.
Often, the term âtechnology sovereigntyâ is used interchangeably with data sovereignty and information sovereignty, in which case the focus is on the countryâs ability to provide the IT infrastructure and technology to fulfill the nations hosting interests, needs, and policies (Coleman, 2019). However, no single nation can be entirely self-reliant when it comes to IT, and technology sovereignty goes beyond technological autonomy that allows the adoption of new technology without dependence (Crespi et al., 2021).
Technology Sovereignty and Innovation Sovereignty
Technology sovereignty and innovation sovereignty are directly related, with the former serving as a bridge to the latter. To achieve short and long-term economic goals, innovation sovereignty involves developing technologies at the local level (Crespi et al., 2021). Both technology and innovation sovereignty are reached by generating relevant scientific and technological knowledge. It is important to note that scientific and technological knowledge does not have any real impact on the economy if there are no resources and prerequisites, such as a regulatory framework and infrastructure, for its application (Edler et al., 2021).
Innovation sovereignty serves to guarantee that the technologies employed in a society do not lead to dependence on monopolistic foreign companies. As a product of technology sovereignty, innovation sovereignty ensures that a country can satisfy its long-term technological requirements with local experts. What is Technology Sovereignty? As a product of technology sovereignty, innovation sovereignty ensures that a country can satisfy its long-term technological requirements with local experts.
Technology Sovereignty and Economic Sovereignty
Adequate infrastructure and the ability to innovate create a favorable environment in which technology sovereignty may lead to economic sovereignty. Economic sovereignty refers to the ability of a country or a country bloc to benefit from independent ventures and partnerships with similar entities without being dependent on any of them (Crespi et al., 2021). Technology sovereignty helps establish innovation independence and eventually results in economic sovereignty, which stems from the need to provide free access to important resources, financing, critical technologies, and data (Edler et al., 2021). Technology sovereignty aims to help the domestic industry by enhancing innovation locally, which makes it intrinsically nationalistic (or regional) in nature. By stimulating innovation, technology sovereignty becomes necessary for achieving development priorities.
How Can Developing Nations Attain Technology Sovereignty
Essential technologies for technology sovereignty are defined using theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Correctly understanding the most critical aspects of technology sovereignty as they relate to technology requires expertise in analysis and relevant procedures (Edler et al., 2020). The initial stage in this process is deciding on the essential skills and knowledge to obtain. This stage is followed by researching the impact of the selected technology on society and the economy and, finally, providing the technology to the local community.
Technological alternatives help strengthen technological independence. Determining the economic viability of a particular alternative helps define its role as an alternative. (Edler et al., 2021). It is, nevertheless, critical to guarantee that technological options are accessible and can be built in developing nations. Technology sovereignty requires creating young talents and obtaining the necessary resources. To produce appropriate technologies in todayâs volatile environment, developing nations need to acquire science and technology know-how by utilizing complex R&I instruments and creating knowledge carrier groups (Edler et al., 2020). They can achieve this by simplifying and reforming the curriculum at the relevant institutions of higher education (BCSD, 2020). For instance, the curriculums should be designed to promote research in agriculture tech and data analytics. University education and training must have clear strategies to eliminate knowledge gaps that slow down alternative technology innovation in developing nations.
Nonetheless, the resources and infrastructure necessary for alternative technologies to become a reality are almost always an unsurmountable obstacle for emerging economies. This is often due to the sheer scope of the research that needs to be performed and the need for more equipment and raw materials to develop and test new technologies (Edler et al., 2020). Consequently, to tackle these obstacles, countries and their educational institutions need to choose a narrower field to focus on. Research collaboration and information exchange regarding essential knowledge helps access the necessary technology and prevents unilateral dependencies.
Emerging nations must foster a technology culture and support scientific and technical knowledge throughout the educational system. Children must be allowed to interact with digital technology and develop capabilities while they are very young. For example, using the relevant technology to enable internet access for children in school and at home is a strategy that will improve the quality of learning (BCSD, 2020). To achieve this goal, teachers, researchers, local and state governments, and other stakeholders need to show intent to work together. The path of attaining technology sovereignty for emerging nations starts with understanding the importance of the right approach to

Q&A
Q: When will [insert game name here] be cracked?
A: STOP!
CrackWatch members are not psychic. Games get cracked by completely ANONYMOUS SCENE GROUPS who don't disclose their progress or plans to the general public so NO ONE knows WHEN and IF a certain game will be cracked.
Q: What are all these NFO thingies? Where do I download?
A: NFOs are text files included with game releases which contain information about the releases.
CrackWatch only informs which games have been cracked. To download look for the releases on CS.RIN.RU's forum or torrent websites. Useful websites can be found in The Beginners Guide or
PiratedGames's Mega Thread.
Q: WTF is Denuvo?
A: Denuvo is a Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology used to protect games from being cracked. Games that have Denuvo are harder to crack and usually take much longer. See Pinned Post for a list of Denuvo games.
Q: An update is out, but it includes the base game as well! Can I only download the update without redownloading the entire game?
A: Yes. CS.RIN.RU is your friend.
