2024.03.03 16:39 _You_Know_Who_It_Is_ 23 [M4M] Texas - Nerd, Weeb, Gamer, Neet, Insomniac, Anxious, and certainly Lonely.

A quick preface for why I'm posting, I just recently started coming down from a deep depression after ending a close and long-lasting relationship that I was banking my future on so I'm looking for someone serious who wants to help fill that void in my life and help me to move on together. And lastly, please, please don't message me unless you've fully read my post in it's entirety and have mostly similar tastes as I'm unlikely to respond to low effort or incompatible replies. Unless we're really likeminded, I don't see things really going much of anywhere.
I'm looking for someone who wants to actively do things together that we like, whether that be watching movies/anime, sharing art, and memes, playing games together, or even just sitting in a VC and talking to one another and hanging out. I want someone who's invested in being together, sharing our love for similar interests, and will try to do so. Someone to lay in bed and just call with, talking to all night until we fall asleep together.
To describe myself, I'm tall, 6'2, white, and my build is stocky, I wear glasses and I have fairly long hair. I go to the gym regularly though I'm not visibly very muscular as I mostly do strength training to stay healthy.
I spend much of my time on my PC or phone, watching YouTube/anime/movies, browsing Twitter for art and memes, listening to music, or playing games with friends. I'm very caring, attentive, probably autistic, apolitical, extremely patient, silly pilled, and a little lazy. On the flip side, I suffer from some pretty bad depression and anxiety, so please be patient with me.
I'm also strictly monogamous and a hopeless romantic so expect me to be clingy if things go well and we hit it off.
My physical preference for men leans a lot more toward the boyish or effeminate side but things can still work out as long as you're not too masculine, overweight, or muscular. I also like Asian guys, southeast Asian to be specific, and younger guys a lot, so bonus points there but it's not a requirement. I do however feel uncomfortable dating older guys, so things might not work if you're over 5 years older then I am.
I'm perfectly okay with long-distance relationships so don't feel afraid to message me if you don't live close.
My interests mainly consist of nerdy shit, games, movies, history, firearms, and military paraphernalia in general (big fan of anime girls with guns), weeb stuff (anime, manga, Japanese culture, gunpla (gundam model kits)), watching YouTube, and browsing twitter for art (really big into sharing art and shit with friends!) and memes. For more information on what I'm into :

2024.02.28 22:16 _You_Know_Who_It_Is_ 23 [M4M] Texas - Nerd, Weeb, Gamer, Neet, Insomniac, Anxious, and certainly Lonely.

When it comes to games, I've played more than I can remember. Anything from RPG, Visual novels, Mil-sim, immersive sims, looter-shooter, RTS, strategy/4x to FPS, and more.A few games and series I love are Dark Souls, Metal Gear, Fallout, Death Stranding, Armored Core, Ace Combat, Stalker, Persona, SMT, Tarkov, Ghost Recon, SWAT 4, Silent Hill, Project Zomboid, Hearts of Iron 4, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Halo, Katawa shoujo, Black souls, Valkyria Chronicles, and Deus Ex. If I had to pick an all-time favorite game, it'd be Fallout New Vegas.

2024.01.15 02:08 GuiltyCoyote17 Looking at Genesis attendees so far (for Ult)

Just wanted to do a quick check-in with how Ultimate's doing at Genesis so far, since it's a few weeks away before we get our next P tier event. Right now Genesis is sitting at an P tier according to the graphic confirmation released on Twitter. I will be updating this notables attendees list as much as I can whenever I have the time!
Looking at attendees, it looks pretty stacked international-wise. Observing those ranked/with points from the LumiRank scorer, we're getting the usual top NA players such as:
Internationally, it's pretty stacked (will use regional ranking once it is out if not on the Worldwide LumiRank, either LumiRank JP or EUPR):
So far it's interesting to see how it's missing notable top players but then again we always circle back to how Ult players like to late reg quite a bit. So who knows if that stays the same. Other than that, we do have a good amount of international top players heading over so far (and it will likely increase even more before the final registration date).
There's also your usual depth players showing up for Genesis, although it's not as heavy as SSC 2023's it still is pretty deep. I may have missed your favorite player during my deep dive... So here's the link to take a look for yourself: https://www.start.gg/tournament/genesis-x/attendees
edit feat. some additional info learned (will update as more comes in):

2023.09.12 13:33 Sayoria Are there any places that are must-sees for Jpop/Jrock fans of the 2000s?

In Japan/Tokyo, that is.
I know times have changed since 20 years ago at this point. I used to be huge into groups like Morning Musume (I think Sayumi Michishige was the last one I ever knew, never followed them since), Ayumi Hamasaki, GLAY, m.o.v.e, Psycho Le Cemu, Gackt, Hyde, the Gazette, Versailles, Nami Tamaki, TM Revolution and many others of that time.
I know some people still tour. I know Ayumi is still going pretty strong despite her hearing troubles lately.... but I've looked into possible concerts and none match my dates there.... (PLC would have been amazing to see in concert)
But..... for Japanese music fans of that era, is there actually anything in the Tokyo area that's a must see for fans of that time? Halls of fame, shops, anything that might have cool things or things to see, or what have you? Japan always has very cool places. Surely there's something not-to-miss for music fans of that era.

2023.07.31 21:56 KrusMatrieya Getting old - Can only play one or three jrpgs in my lifetime, which one to finish that's similar to Xenogears?

I consider Xenogears to be the pinnacle of a particular type of JRPG.
  1. It has a battle system similar to Legend of Legaia which I always prefer.
  2. Compared to other JRPGs (Trails/Tales) you only need to finish this one game and while there are unofficial follow-ups they aren't like Dragon Quest or FF games where the story is self contained but due to fan demand gets turned into DLCs etc.
  3. There's a topic of a player prefer JRPGs over Anime and well all I can say is, compared to suffering through one of a kind animes that turned into cashcows due to fan demand like Evangelion, Xenogears had a couple of things going for it.
a. Because it's not anime, the protagonists aren't kids/teens that grow more powerful rather than grow more mature. This ruins the element of levelling up for me because the immersion that the character grows is ruined by the fact that they never grow old and start out so young. Yes, JRPGs can be guilty of this too but this is why I hate Chrono Trigger despite it's hype and love games like Chrone Cross just because it has a plot where a villain actually feels like a villain and hijacks the overpowered character. (Might be minor spoiler-ish but it really has barely anything to do with the plot for those who haven't played CC but it was a cool concept at the time.)
Other plots I like:
Wild Arms 1 initial scene - That guy just doing his job for job's sake.
Valkyrie Profile pre-Lenneth - hated the voice acting, still was a you need a damn guide to get best ending but I played this in the PSX era where the amount of guides was few and I love it for having a choice and consequence system that at the time felt fluid and real. Too bad with guides, it all seems artificial but lots of good character side stories in the initial runs (not so good gameplay wise and the OP characters have cliche high fantasy stories but for example, compared to suffering to multiple arcs of Berserk only to have the author end up dead - I would have replaced it with the down to earth storyline of the initial Berserk-like male character in this game. Same emotional impact but shorter time length and more realistic result.)
Persona and Disgaea series - I only played D1, D2, Infinite, Persona 1 a bit, SMT, SMT 2 a bit and Persona 2 a bit. I love the elements of these games that are subversions such as rumor secrets, secret day alignment monsters, level 9999 and trope breakers. Unfortunately I'm just not into the overall package of the games. Persona 2 is guilty of being potentially great but being summon friendly which I hate because games like these either become too easy or too hard as you don't do damage enough. I also never got really far into the story, from what little I've seen of the newer Persona characters in Another Eden - it's probably a skip for me. If I want a dating sim JRPG - I'd play Thousand Arms. If I need a classroom setting - There's this old graduation sim called graduation and of course a little known H-game known as True Love 95 which was the closest thing to an English Tokimeki Memorial way way back in the past days of Windows XP.
Summon Swordcraft Story - kind of has the best crafting mechanics for me as it actually relates to the weapons. I would replace this with Vagrant Story but I don't have a controller anymore and can't time the key presses.
Parasite Eve - A JRPG with modern settings and guns, nuff said.
Finally this may not be popular but I prefer classic FF7. It's not just nostalgia, I hate fix fic plots and additional dialogues for dialogue's sake. I couldn't stand the Witcher or Remake due to overly talking characters. Now I love me some dialogue but there used to be a time when blind dialogue pop-ups like in Baldur's Gate 2 was a great thing because it wasn't just dialogues. Even with guides, you couldn't pull off the perfect run unless you had it printed out. It was just that smart at it. FF7 may not have choices except for materia but it also didn't feel like a walking simulator for walking simulator's sake, a dungeon crawler for dungeon crawler's sake nor are the characters too busy oogling each other to just save the damn world. The weapons were also a nice distraction. Finally secrets that aren't hidden but take strategy on blind playthroughs and it wasn't like the weapons were all out of the picture - it's just they have their own business. Sadly things fell flat for me and where I liked the first Saga Frontier despite it's weird gameplay because at some point FF7 became your traditional Final Fantasy and no longer about a bunch of mercenaries who find their place and overcome their trials like Vandal Hearts, Bahamut Lagoon, Suikoden which culminated in Saga Frontier 1 where the protagonists actually have back stories that made them special and felt more open world than other open worlds at that time having a combination of sci-fi, LoveCraftian events and generally, much like Xenogears, it experimented with stuff. You got sewers, monster bellies, mechs, character switching (far better done than CC did) and in general it just didn't feel like the world was out to make you a hero and it didn't feel like satire like MotheEarthbound/Undertale.
Finally relationships can be fantasy but at least make them count. Star Ocean 2nd story had scenes specifically for those relationships, Suikoden 2 made choices that felt real despite not being true Choices and Consequence choices like other games, philosophies aren't tacked on or veer too much away from a known history like Shadow Hearts (I prefer Shadows of Destiny to it though obviously the two aren't the same except for an initial feel of something might not be off with history.)
Some other notable games that I feel are kind of one of a kind in terms of overall feel are Bastard Bonds, some indie JRPGs/RPG Maker games that involve fighting Large Mecha on foot, no level up systems similar to FF2 (kind of like Shichimenchouken) and Friendship bonuses that aren't dating sims (Super Robot Taisen despite it's flaws and pointless difficulty in the later games had these without needing to actually be dialogue heavy romance guide fests - usually one or two scenario determines whether you save someone or even just having a partner besides you. Something P2 also got right.)
Also, while many consider it archaic - I still feel the perfect medium for me in terms of JRPG is a combination of the original Live-A-Live where it actually felt epic that these different characters found themselves against a tragic villain using different methods (Something Wild Arms attempted, SRW kind of didn't get right but feel cool and Xenogears mastered without having to resort to time travel like Chrono Trigger or missing characters like Bof3/Suikoden) Persona 2 (diplomacy like Undertale but actually blind and not gameplay centric or central to the ending) FF7 (good soundtrack, a plot twist that catches you off guard at the time and most of Midgard being infiltrated by a stoic hero with only a basic spell list just felt more Star Wars a New Hope going to Empire Strikes Back than most JRPGs who feel like Return of the Jedi like journeys.)
Also I love romance and dates and supports like Fire Emblem but most JRPGs have really gone backwards from the relationship choices of Phantasy Star III and 7th Saga with fluid rivalries and turned themselves into unrealistic dating sims compared to the progress of Western Visual Novels like Acting Lessons. Maybe it's just the bias of eroge games being more memorable to me than VNs like Fate Stay Night but the scale has gone from choosing which character you want to go to a Gondola with classic moments to "Every signal under the earth is given to you to woo this person to get best ending/best waifu girl" plot which ruins such moments as the awkward shower scene with Fei and Elle or flower scene with Aerith and Cloud or...as Valkyrie Profile mastered it, the tragic Romeo and Juliet redemption of Lenneth and I won't spoil it.
As far as world building, I kind of feel like Kefka was rushed in FF6 compared to Xenogears which also felt rushed but the world decaying plot was a slow burn at least. To me if you want mystery heroes that's PSP jrpgs like Brave Story: New Traveler - no need to go full retard like Kingdom Hearts because fact is, videogame plots when extended are bound to prefer selling over storytelling and it's either bound to be unfinished, disappoint lots of fans or take the cliche route because dark routes don't sell (Dark Souls being the only exemption and even that doesn't have as much dark plot as much as dark fantasy themes wrapped in dark what-ifs.) Just one short journey and hey if that journey needs to be longer, take a cue from Immortal Defense (old Tower Defense game with simple graphics but great plot twist) and turn your hero/villain into an actual evolution of a JRPG character rather than the same JRPG character over and over with new fires to burn. (This is why over the years, I much prefer Lunar 1's story over FF7 because they basically turned a tragic hero suffering from identity crisis in Cloud into basically a martial arts comboing Gackt with special Bishounen Sephiroth which will never pale in comparison to FF7Abridged Sephiroth's descent or martial arts poser Zack which to me ruined everything Cloud strive for in FF7 as a Soldier who carried the mantle of a Sword with a limit break and turned it into whatever Crisis Core is meant to be - fix fic with ARPG elements with a fan pleasing Dragon Ball like evolution of turning characters into special snowflakes that turned tragically. If I wanted that, I heard BoF4 has a better power scale to tragedy plot for that.)
Finally randomizers. Not a requirement but I love heroes that lose but grow from losing such as ZHP or if you have a hack Azure Dream randomizers. These turn the unique close ended world of the PSX/N64 Harvest Moons and turn them into epic challenges that make sense unlike hard dungeons like Lufia 2 and FFT dungeons that make no sense because said challenges are 1. still scaling in challenges as you go down which makes no sense as sometimes stronger monsters have to go up from time to time. 2. Just hard dungeons for hard dungeon's sake.
It may have cheated using a Time Travel mechanic but at least Another Eden actually have tough monsters in the real world and not holed up in some far too reach area and I generally dislike challenges that are linear. I prefer being surprised by Dorter like in FFT 1.3 (though I couldn't finish that stage) or (get my ass whooped in Suikoden 2 beginning if you actually try to fight your way through.) This is what made Saga Frontier 1, Xenogears, sometimes Chrono Cross if you tried too many characters. They have moments like these and sadly while many aren't central to the plots (unlike The Witcher which ironically got this right especially with hard mods creating unique battle sequences for each monster types) ultimately I feel JRPGs need to have:
  1. growth (in age and not just skills)
  2. character development instead of family development plot (why I prefer Cloud/Fei to Shining Force plot/Fire Emblem plot/Chrono plot)
  3. Some form of hybrid growth (Wild Arms 1 had the female MC/Wild Arms 3 had the female MC/Jeanne D Arc had the female MC...ironically only slight spoilers "wheelchair" Cloud seems to have the same hybrid growth in JRPGs in terms of impact of overall attrition in hopeless times. I say slight spoilers because they never really fully explored this unlike Fei in Xenogears but sadly Fei's growth is more philosophical than hybrid which is body mind physical appearance mental growth rite to passage kind of plots.
  4. Interesting side characters that are unique to their world (Shadow Madness had one of the most empowering female brutes rivalling Shahani in Baldur's Gate but with actual plots, Valkyria Chronicles and Shadow Hearts have this in spades but sadly were fantasy history, Day of Ruin Advance Wars kind of rivals the generic grunt post-apocalyptic struggle but with special powers feel of Fall-out that are seen in Getter Robo Armageddon, Original Generations, Front Mission, Silent Bomber but sadly were hampered by graphics and gameplay limitations while The Witcher and Shadow of Colossus were great expansive world but suffered from too much open world that made them not have as much linear philosophical plots like Nier Automata.)
I'm also probably biased (which is why it's a JRPG recommendation rather than Nier Automata recommendation) but I feel in terms of emotional impact Turn Based Rpgs > Tactics RPG > ARPG.
This goes even for Real Time Turn Based like Baldur's Gate.
Nothing replaces the emotional impact of trying to set up the perfect revenge against a guy that just ruined the lives of many people and also the anticipation of what secret moves they had that would crowd control your party or the slow paced realization that you can't just brute force or quick finger trigger your opponent to oblivion. Even the best cinematic games of all time in videogame execution had things like the Sniper Wolf scene in MGS where you had to take diazepam only to realize the horrid banality of what went on compared to the mega-plot twists of Call of Duty military games which require lots of killings which never made sense in a medium where you kill grunts all the time.
Finally certain games non-JRPGs did try the ARPG approach like Deus Ex and Mass Effect and they did have success but let's face it - we all know how those plots eventually "paid off" (not good, massive world building leading to mystery disappearances, unfinished canon)
Compared to the "one last shot one last hp one last member" gameplay of Turn Based Rpgs - these allows for mediums where even the story can be about one last final stands. Games like Vandal Hearts, Vandal Hearts 2, FF7 - even Xenogears these showed plots that later cinematic masterpieces like Metroid, Metal Gear, Nier Automata, Sekiro would copy. Even the Witcher deep down it was a slow burn compared to your Bayonetta and these all are great but I feel like when it comes down to it, I just want JRPG gameplay. I'm getting older, reflexes are slow, I want more dialogue heavy than gameplay heavy but with occassional gameplay twists, mature themes, time to think and ponder through life - hell the advantage of some of the older games is that with save states you can simulate things like exercising after a long fight with a boss or getting proper sleep only after your character visits an inn and pause the game and return to that emotional point and contemplate new views on life. It's not VR but it's not taking your life either.

Interview

https://www.youtube.com/live/pt9zlp8Sy_s?feature=share&t=26888
Maedakun: Let's do the interview. It's a normal day!
Maedakun: A wonderful victory at Maesuma TOP #12, ZETA Division's acola-senshu, congratulations! Let's hear your thoughts right away.
acola: I'm really really happy
Maedakun: Today's grand finals was an acola-senshu we've never seen before. How did you approach this grand finals?
acola: Well, at the last Maesuma TOP, #11, it happened right? I lost to Miya-san in winners semifinals, and at that time, I felt there was a lot that I could have done. So this time, I was conscious of that, and thought about using Aegis and other characters to get revenge on Miya-san. But in the end, I figured I wouldn't be able to win with my Aegis, so I went with Steve and won. So going forward, I'm gonna think of counterplay and since my opponents are so good, like Miya-san, they'll have counterplay too, but Steve is able to do a lot of different options so in that sense, I can get the counterplay on the counterplay.
Maedakun: That's nice. An eternal rival.
acola: That's right
Maedakun: Maedakun talks about it at HIT a lot, but this Maesuma TOP you announced you wanted to win. You were able to win after declaring that you wanted to, how do you feel after participating?
acola: I'm really happy, and like in the match against Neo-san, and against Gackt-san... Well, the Neo-san match I tried Kazuya, and lost, but my proficiency with Steve has been going up and up. But after using different characters like Aegis and Kazuya, my main character, the one I'm most proficient with, I keep thinking it's better to go back to, and that's why I won this time. So there's a lot of tournaments during Golden Week, and I think I'll be playing mostly Steve in all of them.
Maedakun: Lately, the effort you've taken, especially the recent Summit win, starting with that, the effort you've put in has really shown the passion here, a true effort. Starting off Golden Week with a wonderful victory, or should we call it a Smash Bros Week. With this Smash Bros Week, what's your next tournament?
acola: The matches at... Gackt-san's thing on May 3rd
Maedakun: Ah, May 3rd, the one Gackt-san was advertising
acola: Smash Bootcamp, sorry
Maedakun: Alright, May 3rd. It's a 対戦会 (competitive meet?), if we had to call it something? (TLN: Tokyo Smash Bootcamp might not be a tournament format?)
acola: Something close to that. Other than that, it's Kagaribi.
Maedakun: Kagaribi will have 1024 entrants, double Maesuma. Amazing, Kagaribi. Looking forward to it! What's your goal?
acola: My goal, well I want to win.
Maedakun: Going back for the gold?
acola: I wanna take it I feel.
Maedakun: That's nice. There's the term "kotodama", the power to will something you say into existence. So please.
acola: Yes, this time, there's MuteAce, and KEN-san, and then Sparg0. Players I keep losing to. Well, KEN-san, I'm technically up 2-1, but I'm on the losing side after the last time. So I wanna play against and get revenge on those people.
Maedakun: That's great. There's a lot of overseas players coming to Japan, getting used to the time, and I'm sure they'll be even more polished next time. So the acola-senshu who's preparing to not lose next time, the acola-senshu who's going to be even stronger next time, can you promise to show us that next time too?
acola: (nods) ... Of course.
Maedakun: Of course! Hahaha But really, your activities going forward this year, wherever you're going, aiming even higher, maybe where no one can even reach, we look forward to it! Once again, another round of applause for the winner of Maesuma TOP #12, ZETA Division's acola-senshu! Congratulations!
Maedakun: Thank you very much
acola: Thank you very much
Maedakun: Can you stay on and talk?
acola: Haha, well, if there's something to talk about
Maedakun: Sure, let me know what you think okay?

Announcements

Maedakun: Alright, with that, I'd like to close us out with some announcements.
Maedakun: For starters, for all the people participating, everyone coming from far away, once again, thank you very much.
Maedakun: And then, this week, there will be that competitive meet, and the tournament called DELTA on Thursday. And everyone wanting to win Kagaribi at the week's end. This Smash Bros Week, everyone who was fired up over Maesuma TOP, I hope you can bring that energy with you to Kagaribi. To everyone at Kagaribi and EGS, Maesuma will be doing some IRL streaming at the scene, so help us get excited.
Maedakun: And thank you to everyone from Broadcasting Arts College for helping with the broadcast today! Ah, will we be able to see them? ... ... Will the camera change? ... No? ... Ah, there, there! Thank you!
(camera showing the girls from BAS with their flag)
Maedakun: Thank you for everything! Thank you for all the wonderful work! Everyone from Broadcasting Arts College!
Maedakun: The cameraman taking all the shots on the ground was done with their handheld cameras too! And they brought the smoke too. Really, thank you.
Maedakun: And the cameraman, Alfa-san and uh... Utthi-san (thanks kenniky) Hahaha it gets mixed up with T and Tea too. Really, thank you for all your work.
Maedakun: Will you be publishing the photos? (nods) Right away? (Some time before Kagaribi)
Maedakun: For all the players here, lately it's a trend to use tournament pictures on your profile, so if there's a good one here, keep an eye out. Thank you very much.
Maedakun: And today's sold out Tsukuneya-san! They've sold a lot, so thank you! Thanks for all the delicious lunch boxes!
Maedakun: And thanks to all the staff! There were a lot of overseas players too, so it was difficult to progress the way we wanted. The wall that is language is tall.
acola: It's tough
Maedakun: But thanks to many people, Watch-san, Noluck-san, KEN-san, everyone able to speak English, all your cooperation made it possible for the 512 people here. Riddles and Tea-san were really lost really wrapped up their matches quickly, so thank you very much.
acola: Haha thank you.
Maedakun: The schedule for today had us set to end at 8:00, but right now, what time is it?
acola: 6:20
Maedakun: 6:20? We're ahead by an hour and a half! Thank you very much! Really, thank you
acola: So fast
Maedakun: Really wrapped it up fast. Three matches finished in 30 minutes? Thanks!
Maedakun: Once again, I hope to bring these passionate matches to everyone, and I'll continue to do my best, so stay with us at Maesuma TOP! Then, let's end with our announcements! Can we switch the screen?
Maedakun: We announced the dates last time, but we can now announce it.
acola: Oooh
Maedakun: We'll be there again! Maesuma TOP #13, in Osaka -2 days- at Hanazono Rugby Stadium! It will be a two day tournament on Saturday and Sunday on June 24 to 25 ! So please, please participate! There will also be booths, we've spoken with LabGC and they'll be having one. Maybe there will even be alcohol?
Maedakun: Right now, we're in the middle of trying, but we might be able to use the field in the stadium. There's permission to use the stadium, and we're figuring out if it's possible for not. We might be able to use the whole venue.
Maedakun: The method is a bit different from the last time. We might be able to make better use of the venue. We'll have more details after the videos for Maesuma TOP #12 are out.
Maedakun: acola-kun, will you be coming?
acola: Well, I wanna go...
Maedakun: Hearing you wanna go makes me happy. Revenge! (last time, he wasn't able to participate at the Rugby Stadium)
acola: It'd be nice if it didn't rain. Last time, it was raining.
Maedakun: mmm that'd be good
acola: The first day, it was raining really hard. It was unfortunate you couldn't use the outside.
Maedakun: Yeah. Well, we're thinking up a plan for if it does rain, so we'll announce more later.
Maedakun: We don't have an image for this, but we're thinking of holding a new tournament in Hyougo this year. 256 or 320 entrants in Hyougo. It might be Maesuma, or a new name. Rather than Maedakun being the TO, it's something I want the staff to help lead and learn.
acola: I see. So more of a sponsor type of deal?
Maedakun: I think it would be more interesting that way. Also, one more thing. I can't say more on the details, but I want to do a student-only tournament. Under-22 or something like that. I want to hold a student-only tournament in Kansai, and Sumabato-san will be assisting with it.
Maedakun: Right now, in Kansai, the young players are standing out a lot. The University students too, like Neo-san in Kanto. I've wanted to do an age restricted tournament at least once. So this might be the one, we're planning on where to hold it.
acola: I see
Maedakun: acola-kun will probably be going. Age-wise anyways, you qualify.
acola: Well this time, Rarukun, you know.
Maedakun: Right, Rarukun
acola: He got 9th and he's 16 right now. Wait, 15.
Maedakun: That's right, Rarukun got top 12. Someone that good showing up.
acola: He's strong. Really strong.
Maedakun: I want to have a tournament where people can say "wow there's strong players that young out there".
Maedakun: Ah, also one more thing. On June 24 to 25, right now we're doing the online Splatoon tournaments, but we'll also be doing an offline invitational. On the Sunday. Right now, we're looking at the members, but the winners will be invited to the Hanazono Rugby Stadium to play.
acola: Amazing.
Maedakun: We've technically decided on the next one. The next Hanazono one. For Maesuma TOP. We'll announce that later too.
acola: Okay
Maedakun: We have a lot planned for the future. And like yesterday, the Crew Battle. An invitational project.
acola: Ah, fun events like that.
Maedakun: That was really fun right? We wanna do more like that. But Maedakun only has one body, so I've been thinking of a skill to split myself in two. I hope you look forward to it.
Maedakun: You don't have a quip for me?
acola: Hahahaha. Well, when you said you'd be doing Ikaten (Splatoon) on June 25 too, I was wondering what would happen. Were you going to be talking on the main stream still, timewise...
Maedakun: Well, about that, Maedakun likes Splatoon to begin with, and of course I like Smash too. I like multigame tournaments. There's lots of charm. Like EVO for example.
acola: Ah, yes, yes. And Genesis
Maedakun: I wanted try the challenge of making a tournament like that too.
acola: I see
Maedakun: We might be able to do it this year so look forward to it.
Maedakun: Well, we've been talking for a while now, but the biggest announcement is next month's. Or almost two months huh. June 24 to 25's two days Maesuma TOP #13 at Hanazono Rugby Stadium.
Maedakun: Alright, with that, we can close out the stream. Thank you for sticking around with me today.
acola: Thank you for having me.
Maedakun: Take good care of the gold medal today. Ah by the way, we'll have the usual medals with the correct backs on a future date.
acola: Hahaha
Maedakun: Sorry! Also, thank you everyone at Hotel Fukuracia for providing us such a wonderful venue, we'll continue using it in the future. Thank you to Broadcast Arts College for your hard work. And everyone on staff, be careful not let your guard down at the end! Don't get hurt! The monitors are heavy, so be careful, don't rush! And to everyone participating today! It may be raining, so be careful not to slip on your way home! And thank you acola!
acola: Thank you
Maedakun: If there's any projects we can do together, I'll let you know
acola: I was happy this time too
Maedakun: Ah! Do you want to do something next month? There's something
acola: Ah
Maedakun: I might invite you so.
acola: There's a lot happening
Maedakun: Lots. With that. We keep talking forever. Let's close it out.
acola: Okay
Maedakun: Thank you for participating! I hope to see everyone happy next time too! Good work everyone!
acola: Good work everyone!

2023.04.12 09:39 radiantbutterfly Recs for currently active rock musicians with classical/theatrical influence?

Hi, so, long story short I started getting into Japanese music in the early 2000s, and am currently realizing I haven't picked up many new artists to listen to in the last few years. Well, to be fair I have continued to discover music that is "new" to me, but when I look at the release date it's from a decade or more ago. So I'm hoping to discover some more artists who are at an early to mid stage in their careers instead of winding down/retiring.
I'm looking for artists with at least a few of these features:
My current playlists include Gackt, Kokia, Yuki Kajiura and associated bands (See-Saw, Kalafina, FictionJunction), Susumu Hirasawa, and an assortment of early 2000's VK/J-rock and anime songs. (If you're thinking most of the named artists aren't rock... that is true and it's why I'm hoping for some recs more in that direction ;;)

2023.03.31 03:09 brycejm1991 [REQUEST][STEAM] Crisis core- FF7 - Reunion ($49.99USD) (3rd attempt)

Quick note before you read, which I thank you for, the game is not on sale, so I know asking for it right now probably wont get me anywhere. On top of that there are others with more reasonable requests that should 100% be put ahead of me. This post, for the moment, is a "don't know if you don't try" sort of thing.
Hey there GoG, I hope everyone's day/week is going good. I am here today to ask for Crisis Core on steam
Why I want it.
Where do I even begin. I should probably start with that fact that my first FF was 7. A neighbofamily friend upgraded to a PS2 and gave me their PS1 and a copy of FF7. I was only like 10, but god damn did I play the shit out of the game. It was arguably the most amazing thing I had played up to that point. And of course this was before the internet was as main stream as it is now, so I had to figure everything out on my own, and I enjoyed every god damn minute of it.
Jump forward to 2006/7, I am now playing the hell out of Dirge of Cerberus: FF7, because Vincent Valentine is the best character ever, and that game is amazing fight me. Around this time I learn of a new game that is going to be released, Crisis core: Final Fantasy 7, a game for the PSP. I started saving immediately, so I could preorder, back when preordering was an alright thing to do.
Then it finally came out. And OMG was it good. The opening cinematic matching FF7, which is a spoiler in it of itself, and the game looked and felt amazing. Playing as Zack and not having it be turned based, but still having all the elements of a FF game was refreshing. And It arguably still does look good over a decade later, albeit dated. Getting more story for Zack and some of the major plot points of the original game was thrilling, even more so because Dirge's story line was hyper focused on Vincent in current time, with a little bit of the past, and Advent Children didn't really touch on a lot of the past out side of the end of the first game. The biggest shgame is that it took so long for a remake to even happen, which to my understanding was due to Gackt not wanting/allowing them to do it for whatever asinine reason.
I could go on for days, so I am just going to cut myself off there.
Why I am asking for help.
Money is tight right now, due in part to medical bills to the birth, and subsequent death, of my daughter, dental surgery, my cat having had a tumor removed. And most recently our car, a 2006 Mercury, died because of condensation in the engine causing several lines to burst due to sub zero temps, and we are now paying for a 2020 Toyota Coralla.
The last 9 months have been kind shitty if you couldn't tell.
With that, I thank you for taking the time to read my post, and I hope you have a wonderful day/week, and stay warm!

2023.03.23 16:06 Tery_ Every Character's Best Win - Ultimate Fighters

The end of ECBW concludes as the end of Summit begins. Let's close out with the Ultimate newcomers.
Here you can see the previous posts here for the 64 fighters, Melee fighters, Brawl fighters, and Smash 4 fighters.

Inkling INKLING - Space vs. Glutonny, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2019 - Top 12

This character used to be good. They still are (kinda), but they used to be, too. Space and Cosmos were the original Inkling duo (and both coincidentally also use Aegis now). But while Cosmos stacked the top 8 placements, Space was one of few European brethren to claim victory over the continent's best player in Gluto. To put into perspective the emperor's stranglehold on EU at the time, UFA - which happened in October 2019 - was only the second European event where Gluto losing to someone in winners actually meant something (and the first time it wasn't even from an EU player, it was Shuton). Also shoutouts to the French commentators, y'all make me wanna run through a brick wall with the amount of hype and love you put into your casts. Keep up the great work!
Honorable Mention: Cosmos vs. Nairo, Genesis 6 - Top 64 - Starting off his Ultimate career as an Inkling main, Cosmos picked up many top player wins in 2019.
Honorable Mention: Cosmos vs. Dabuz, Get On My Level 2019 - Top 12 - A five game slugfest against Dabuz capped off another top 8 run at his 7th straight major of Cosmos, one of the earliest streaks.
Honorable Mention: Shirayuki vs. HERO, MaesumaTOP#9 - Winners Quarters - Shirayuki from Japan has the highest honor of the highest placement for Inkling: 2nd place at MaesumaTOP#9.

Ridley RIDLEY - Mezcaul vs. Sisqui, Temple: Hermes Edition - Top 24

Ridley finally got into Smash, and was rewarded for his patience by...being pretty bad. French Ridley Mezcaul has made the most of his situation, with a handful of top 16 appearances and even a top 8 showing at Ultimate WANTED #3. The creme de la creme of his (and Ridley's) wins has to be Sisqui, which happened at Temple: Hermes. What is there to talk about without the recording? The lore implications? Oh Metroid Prime got remastered recently, highly recommend if you've never played it. If Skyjay showed us anything at Collision, it's that character loyalists can get rewarded with breakout runs. Perhaps the character deemed "too big for Smash" has a big run waiting in its future.
Honorable Mention: Mezcaul vs. Larry Lurr, Ultimate WANTED #3 - Top 12 - Larry Lurr might be the spacies overlord but was no match for this space pirate.
Honorable Mention: Mezcaul vs. Flow, 95 Kings of Fields 2 - Top 24 - Even though Ridley is a dragon, Roy could not defeat his canon final boss this time around.
Honorable Mention: Nair^ vs. Sparg0, SWT 2021 Central America Regional Finals - Pools - Not a major, not a problem for an HM spot as Mexican Ridley Nair^ beat Sparg0 in a five game banger.

SimonRichter SIMON & RICHTER - T3 DOM vs. Dabuz, Summit 5 - Gauntlet Phase

The Belmont boys have been fielded by a handful of players throughout history. Some made top 16, some down air a Pikmin, and some are Squidplumber. But T3 DOM - one of the most handsome gamers in the scene - scored the holy grail of Simon and Richter wins when he toppled the paragon of consistency and patience in Dabuz at Ultimate Summit 5. Through a barrage of projectiles and ledge traps that made both the Min Min and Rosalina's head spin, he pushed the King of NY out of gauntlet phase and forced him to start championship Sunday from losers. Riddles' win (also on Dabuz) at SSC '19 could've had an argument but despite being in open bracket, it being BO3 disqualifies the set from contention.
Honorable Mention: T3 DOM vs. Jakal, Double Down 2022 - Top 64 - T3 DOM sends Jakal packing at Double Down, who would get eliminated by BassMage shortly thereafter.
Honorable Mention: Noxumbra vs. eMass, Ultimate WANTED #3 - Losers Quarters - Noxumbra popped off at WANTED #3, flying with Richter's projectiles all the way to 4th, eliminating eMass who was on a great run of his own.
Honorable Mention: Riddles vs. Dabuz, Super Smash Con 2019 - Riddles' first (of many) breakout performances was here at Smash Con. Poor Dabuz getting upset by Belmonts years apart.

Chrom CHROM - Leon vs. Riddles, Genesis 9 - Top 48

At Genesis 9 we got the reverse of the Awakening script. Instead of Lucina saving her father, it was the other way around. After getting two stocked by Riddles' Kazuya, French Leon switched in Chrom (Mr. R was whispering sweet nothings in his ear, I'm sure) and proceeded to trade blow-for-blow against Mr. Mishima. During game two, he was down nearly 100% on the final stock but stole it with a beautiful chase into back air. Riddles immediately zero-to-deaths him to start game three and Leon does the exact same thing right back. Every Kazuya combo was responded with a crushing Fsmash read in kind, which of course is how the set ended in Leon's favor 3-1. First Marth, then Chrom. Now Proto's Lucina has to defeat Riddles to complete the trifecta.
Honorable Mention: Mr. R vs. quiK, Albion 4 - Top 12 - Mr. R - AKA the man most addicted to Chrom in the world. stacked up wins en route to 5th at Albion 4 for the first top 8 of his career.
Honorable Mention: Lancelot vs. TriM, Genesis 8 - Top 64 - Two Europeans traveled to compete in G8 only to have to fight each other in losers top 64.
Honorable Mention: Rivers vs. VoiD, Frostbite 2019 - Top 16 - The original pioneer of Chrom, Rivers (then Shoyo James) sent VoiD out of the tournament at Frostbite 2019 two weeks after his 2nd at Genesis 6.

KingKRool KING K. ROOL - KirbyKid vs. Lima, MomoCon 2022 - Top 48

Contrary to his name, KirbyKid is in fact a K. Rool main. I suppose KRoolKid doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same way. But to not even have Kirby as a secondary? C'mon man. In any case, his best win came from his best run at MomoCon where he squared off against Lima. After a 3-1, he sent the Bayonetta main home at 33rd place. Earlier that month, Lima beat KirbyKid at the exact same point in bracket so getting that revenge at MomoCon must have felt sweet. While his CEO 2021 run got further, it didn't come with a Lima win - not to mention KirbyKid was still in BO3 territory when he got eliminated. The future King K. Rool is in KirbyKid's hands. Or a surprise appearance out of Huto.
Honorable Mention: KirbyKid vs. ChocoTaco, CEO 2021 - Top 96 - In the only entry with video, it's a battle of obscure characters with the king coming up on top.
Honorable Mention: KirbyKid vs. SHADIC, CEO 2021 - Pools - This was the site of KirbyKid's peak placing at a major, getting eliminated at 17th by Myran.
Honorable Mention: Bruho vs. MuteAce, Shine 2022 - Pools - Bruho defeated MuteAce very early on in pools at Shine 2022, catalyzing an incredible run to 13th.

Isabelle ISABELLE - Jaka vs. AndresFN, Vienna Challengers Arena 2021 - Top 16

Isabelle is more of an echo fighter than actual echo characters like Daisy and Richter and honestly I'm just telling you this because there's no VOD for this selection and thus I will run out of things to say. That and it pisses me off because Nintendo butchered echoes as a concept. Jaka is the yang to kept's yin, playing Isabelle rather than Villager (though kept does dabble in some Isabelle shenanigans on the side). They've both even made top 8 at a major before. As you can guess, Jaka's breakthrough happened at VCA where he stepped into the ring against Andres and Terry. Somehow someway the cute secretary doggo held her own against Go! and launched Jaka into another round of losers. Given his overall low attendance, we might see Jaka surprise us all in the future at another EU major.
Honorable Mention: Jaka vs. NaetorU, Vienna Challengers Arena 2021 - Top 12 - Somehow, someway, Jaka and kept have taken both Isabelle and Villager into top 8 at a major. Animal Crossing is alive and well.
Honorable Mention: Jaka vs. Gin, Ultimate WANTED #4 - Top 48 - Insert match #2 of Jaka vs. a random European at a European major because I don't know better.
Honorable Mention: Jaka vs. Momon, COLOSSEL 2022 - Pools - Insert match #3 of Jaka vs. a random European at a European major because I still don't know better.

Ken KEN - Jahzz0 vs. Shuton, Kagaribi#9 - Top 24

It's always good to set a career best placement at a major. To do so at your first Japanese event is impressive. Beating Shuton at said event is crazy. 3-0'ing Shuton to knock him out of bracket at 17th is insane. Jahzz0 did all of those things in February and I'm still in shock to be honest. This is Shuton, who has never lost a set to Japan's best Ken takera (literally beat him two rounds before fighting Jahzz0). This is Shuton, a top 10 player in the world. This is Shuton, who had not missed top 8 at a Japanese major in one and a half years. And the American made him look foolish in three games straight. That's the type of win that can change your trajectory as a player. Time will tell if that is the case with Jahzz0 and his goofy ahh Donald Duck impression.
Honorable Mention: Vendetta vs. Light, Glitch: Infinite - Top 16 - With a variety of Ken players to choose from, we'll swing by Vendetta's nailbiter set against Light.
Honorable Mention: Jahzz0 vs. Glutonny, Summit 5 - Pools - Jahzz0's first Summit was full of memorable moments, but probably none more memorable than a win on Europe's best player.
Honorable Mention: takera vs. Shogun, EGS Cup 3 - Top 12 - The Ken showcase's final stop is in Japan with takera and his 5th place finish at EGS Cup 3.

Incineroar INCINEROAR - Skyjay vs. Sparg0, Collision 2023 - Losers Finals

NA saw that Japan had characters like Piranha Plant and Dr. Mario making top 3 of their majors and didn't want to feel left out. Last weekend, Skyjay did the unimaginable with a Summit spot on the line, climbed to 2nd place at a supermajor. With a mixture of explosive hits and a healthy serving of cheese, Skyjay maneuvered around the likes of Maister, Sparg0, and Lima. But when it came to losers finals surely he couldn't defeat Sparg0 again, right? Wrong. Killing Sparg0 at an average of 110%, Skyjay feasted on the familiarity of the matchup and against all odds, pushing Incineroar to his absolute limit. VGC Incineroar was taking notes!
Honorable Mention: Skyjay vs. Kola, Super Smash Con 2022 - Top 48 - Prior to his insane Collision run, Skyjay's peak win was his on Kola at the largest event of 2022.
Honorable Mention: Skyjay vs. Chag, RETA 2022 - Losers Quarters - Skyjay notched a pretty 4th place at RETA, sending Chag out during the first top 8 (and top 4) appearance of his career.
Honorable Mention: Skyjay vs. Dabuz, Collision 2023 - Top 64 - This was the win that got me raising eyebrows. Reverse sweeping Dabuz of all players? If only we knew that this was just the start of something truly magical.

PiranhaPlant PIRANHA PLANT - Brood vs. Kameme, Umebura SP4 - Winners Finals

Before there was Sparg0's squad strike Plant, there was Scend's Plant. And before that, there was Brood. In August 2019 you might have had this weird dream where Piranha Plant made grand finals at a major. Then upon waking up you realize that actually happened. Admittedly, there was a lot of BO3 because early Japan tournaments be like that, but Brood still had to get the wins. For winners finals, Brood had to face Kameme fresh off his dub at Umebura Japan Major. Dealing with his Megaman (plus a guest feature from Wario) was a difficult task but the Brood Plant was up for the job. And look, we're not gonna talk about that ending. This is the only Plant top 2, top 4, and top 8 appearance in the history of Ultimate and something we may never see again.
Honorable Mention: Lucky vs. Doorstop, The Big House 10 - Top 32 - The most recent Plant result that's not squad strike Sparg0, Lucky dominated Doorstop at TBH10 in October.
Honorable Mention: Brood vs. Tsubotsubo, Kagaribi#8 - Top 128 - Brood has been unable to replicate the magic of that Umebura run since, but has picked up some good wins here and there.
Honorable Mention: Brood vs. TKM, Kagaribi#6 - Top 64 - At both Kaga#6 and #8, Brood got 33rd, which was his best Plant placing besides USP4 (his 13th at USP2 was with Richter, apparently).

Joker JOKER - MkLeo vs. Tweek, EVO 2019 - Grand Finals

It's August 4th, 2019. EVO 2019 - the largest Ultimate tournament of all time - is headed towards its finale. Tweek is up two games on MkLeo, the best rivalry in Smash. Leo's Joker manages to clinch game three but then instantly goes down two stocks in the pivotal game four. Slowly but surely, Arsene begins to chip away at Tweek's lead. With both players at 120%+ on their final stock, Leo walks up to a shielding Tweek, and waits. Welcome to a moment in history. MkLeo has done some incredible things in this game for the past four years but EVO will remain his magnum opus. The biggest win on his biggest rival on the biggest stage. EVO 2019 grands was really something special. This is not only the greatest Joker win of all time, but it's the greatest Ultimate win of all time.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. Shuton, Ultimate WANTED #4 - Grand Finals - Another pair of rivals battled on the grandest stage. A ten game gigabanger further hyped by the crowd and commentary.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Samsora, Super Smash Con 2019 - Grand Finals - A week after EVO, Leo decided to give us an encore. Down 2-1 to Samsora on tournament point, he turned it up and never looked back. Again.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Light, Genesis 9 - Losers Finals - One of Leo's most recent conquest with the Phantom Thief. Light wanted to fight Joker and he got that and then some.

Hero HERO - Akakikusu vs. zackray, Kagaribi#3 - Losers Semis

Remember when people wanted to ban Hero? Simpler times man, simpler times. Akakikusu is singlehandedly responsible for top level Hero achievements. His breakout run happened to be his first major attended, Kagaribi#3. After being sent to losers by another rising star in Atelier, Aka handled his business up until losers semifinals where he came face to face with zackray, the country's #1 player and ultimate wild card. What followed was one of the most bizarre sets even by Japan's wacky standards, thanks to the combination of zackray and Hero. Aka took a 2-1 lead on the Wario, before zackray brought out ol' reliable in Joker and forced game five. Lots of close calls and wacky interactions ensued and in the end, Hatchet Man of all moves pushed Akakikusu and Hero to top three at a major.
Honorable Mention: Akakikusu vs. Lea, Kagaribi#3 - Top 12 - A win over the best Greninja in the world sent Akakikusu into top 8 during his major debut.
Honorable Mention: Akakikusu vs. tk3, Kagaribi#4 - Top 12 - Riding the momentum of his breakout Kagaribi run, Akakikusu does it again and makes top 8 at Kaga#4.
Honorable Mention: Akakikusu vs. Gackt, Seibugeki #8 - Top 12 - Aka topples Gackt and barely misses out on top 8 thanks to Proto and Shuton. Wonder how many of his countrymen have suffered a similar fate.

Banjo BANJO & KAZOOIE - Toriguri vs. Fuwa, Kagaribi#9 - Top 96

I am so sorry Banjo bros, y'all live a tough life. VODs for your wins were more difficult than some of the puzzle pieces from the source material. The painful reality is that this character was not given the same DLC privilege that the others got (although Wonder Wing kinda nice). Raito is probably the most well-known Banjo player but still shares starting reps with his loyal Duck Hunt, and I was hoping LeoN's surprising pocket Banjo picked up a win somewhere but alas. We are left with another Japanese Banjo in Toriguri, who has a smattering of results ranging from 25th to 65th. It seems unlikely Banjo will make noise soon but with the wild game of Ultimate that we play, who knows what's in store for this dynamic duo.
Honorable Mention: Toriguri vs. Reno, Seibugeki #12 - Top 48 - The highest placing for Toriguri was 25th at Seibugeki #12, and this was their last win before exiting bracket.
Honorable Mention: Toriguri vs. Shirube, MaesumaTOP#9 - Top 128 - Another decent showing out of Toriguri, getting 33rd after entering top 96 on winners side.
Honorable Mention: OwlBBs vs. Baten Caillax, COLOSSEL 2022 - Top 128 - Apparently Europe houses OwlBBs and Wolfen for Banjo mains, but this is the only example I could find at a major.

Terry TERRY - Riddles vs. Sonix, Collision 2023 - Winners Semis

Riddles was getting deja vu down 0-2 to Sonix at Collision 2023. He was 0-3 in the head-to-head, lost CEO 2022 across ten games and then got swept at Let's Make Big Moves to start the new year. But then Mr. Bogard asked the proverbial question: are you okay? And Riddles decided he was. More than okay, in fact. The combo game was on point, his confirms into kill moves were consistent, and Riddles kept sipping that almighty Go! juice throughout his incredible reverse sweep. The most impressive thing about this set is that Riddles' Terry usage (as far as majors go) was limited. Mainstage was really the last time we saw a substantial amount of Terry. So for him to break it out in a do-or-die situation against a top 10 player that has had his number? Sheesh.
Honorable Mention: Riddles vs. Light, Collision 2022 - Top 32 - Another Riddles breakout point was at Collision the year prior, where Mr. Bogard sent Mr. Light into losers.
Honorable Mention: Tsu vs. Eim, Kagaribi#3 - Top 12 - A man known for his pockets, Tsu's Terry totally trounces Eim's Sheik at Kaga#3.
Honorable Mention: Riddles vs. Tweek, Let's Make Big Moves - Top 32 - And now back to your regular scheduled Riddles' Terry win.

Byleth BYLETH - MkLeo vs. acola, Ludwig Smash Invitational - Grand Finals

Saving the Leo entries for last was a good call on my part because it's simply so easy to write about Leo. He took a character like Byleth that many projected as mid tier and won about as many majors with him as the Joker did. At Ludwig's he steamrolled through the competition and had only acola to challenge in grands. The long-anticipated matchup was Leo's first test against Steve since he got unceremoniously 3-0'd by Onin at Smash Con, and he passed the re-exam with flying colors. People waited to see Leo vs. acola, and in the end across six games it wasn't even close but that shouldn't be too surprising considering he's the GOAT. The most surprising thing about Leo's Byleth isn't that it's elite, it's that he rocks the default male skin.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Sparg0, Mainstage 2021 - Grand Finals - After three tries, Sparg0 finally gets a set win on Leo and it looks like his crowning moment is here in game nine. What happens next may shock you...
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Glutonny, Genesis 8 - Grand Finals - Senor Genesis would not succumb to the French dimension as Leo swiftly claims his 3rd Genesis title.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Tweek, Riptide 2021 - Grand Finals - When it seemed like Leo had no answers for the Tweek Diddy, he double eliminated the monkey at Riptide.

MinMin MIN MIN - ProtoBanham vs. zackray, Kagaribi#4 - Grand Finals

There exists a timeline where Min Min never gets added to the game and ProtoBanham emerges out of the quarantine period an Inkling main. As the world's #1 Cantonese Silver 2 Valorant Proto fan, I much prefer this reality. Proto's 2021 got off to the perfect start at Kagaribi#4 and was a harbinger of things to come as he would collect three total major wins by year's end. In grands he had to face an old friend in zackray, who he dispatched earlier in winners with Lucina. But after Lucina dropped two games to zackray's Joker, Min Min subbed in and got to work in the reset. zackray tried the ROB in true finals but it was not enough, and the first FP2 character was the first of the bunch to win a major.
Honorable Mention: ProtoBanham vs. MkLeo, Double Down 2022 - Grand Finals - Yes, it's a supermajor win. Yes, it's against Leo. Yes, it's against his ROB...
Honorable Mention: Dabuz vs. MkLeo, Low Tide City - Winners Finals - The popoff should really tell you all you need to know about Dabuz and his history with Leo.
Honorable Mention: ProtoBanham vs. Sparg0, Summit 5 - Winners Quarters - This set vs. Sparg0 showed how Proto can overwhelm you completely with Min Min either for a whole game (G1) or off a single mistake (G5).

Steve STEVE - acola vs. Shuton, MaesumaTOP#7 - Grand Finals

Unlike their status as the best character in the game, Steve's best win was a tough debate. On one hand, acola's Gimvitational win vs. Light was his NA debut against a top five player. On the other hand, his Shuton win at MaesumaTOP#7 was his first major ever, against a top ten player. Oh and he had to win two sets to take the bracket. But this is now an acola statistics post. In his full year of attending offline events, acola has become the winningest player in Japan with eight majors to his name. That also puts him at #3 in wins all-time. Let me repeat: this kid has the 3rd most major wins of all-time already. acola has a higher chance of making grand finals than a plethora of top players have of making top 8. And speaking of top 8, he is only outdone by the GOAT himself in top8%. What will happen in the next year of competition?
Honorable Mention: acola vs. Light, Gimvitational - Grand Finals - Famous last words from Light (paraphrased): "I'm gonna win because I'm the better player." He did not in fact win. acola claims his first trophy on American soil.
Honorable Mention: Onin vs. MkLeo, Super Smash Con 2022 - Top 32 - In a super anticipated matchup, Onin completely rolls over Leo (with minecart, probably) in a 3-0 upset stunner.
Honorable Mention: acola vs. Sparg0, Ludwig Smash Invitational - Losers Semis - In a clash of young prodigies, it was acola who took first blood in the rivalry.

Sephiroth SEPHIROTH - KEN vs. Tea, Battle of BC 4 - Grand Finals

Just imagine One Winged Angel playing as you read this. BoBC 4 was an important event for KEN. He was coming off the heels of disappointing placements at Pound 2022 and Kagaribi#7 (though did sandwich in a top 8 appearance at MaesumaTOP#7). Sonic sped through the bracket, the decision to use Sephiroth for the entirety of top 8 was at least a little surprising. With two other Japanese invaders in Shuton and Tea standing between KEN and his first Ultimate major, it turned out the be the right call. With bountiful use of KEN's favorite Seph move (backwards aerial) and even vanquishing the Tea Kazuya on Final Destination, KEN was finally able to lift an Ultimate trophy. In 2007 there was SephirothKen. 15 years later there was KEN Sephiroth. Time really is a flat circle.
Honorable Mention: Tweek vs. Light, Scuffed World Tour - Winners Quarters - Tweek had struggled to get a win on Light at Summit and Big House with Diddy, but the one winged Angel tagged in at Scuffed and got the job done.
Honorable Mention: KEN vs. Yoshidora, Umebura SP9 - Top 24 - KEN continues to juggle Sephiroth back home. This time Yoshidora gets a taste of the Masamune.
Honorable Mention: Sriks vs. Miya, Kagaribi#9 - Pools - Any of y'all ever show up to your first Japanese supermajor and beat one of their best players? No, just Sriks?

Pythra PYRA & MYTHRA - Shuton vs. acola, Scuffed World Tour - Losers Semis

Ever since they burst onto the scene, Pyra and Mythra have been furiously talked about and utilized. Sparg0, MkLeo, the list goes on and on. Shuton has really taken a liking to Aegis and outside of Cosmos probably has the highest usage of the two blades. At Scuffed, he used both Aegis and Olimar in a balanced spread, but stuck with the girls against acola's deadly Steve. Down 2-0, you could see the gears start to turn and for the next three games Shuton cooked the young prodigy. Three stocking him game three, constantly dodging anvil and juggling the hell out of Steve, knocking him out of minecart. Getting a reverse sweep after having lost earlier in winner's side (plus that devastating SD in game five) must have felt cathartic. This is the power of the Aegis.
Honorable Mention: Cosmos vs. Zomba, Glitch: Infinite: Grand Finals - Fittingly, the player that has long since stuck with Aegis was the first to bring her to the promised land.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Maister, COLOSSEL 2022 - Grand Finals - Do not watch this set with young children, the results could be psychologically scarring.
Honorable Mention: Sparg0 vs. zackray, Summit 3 - Winners Semis - Can't forget Sparg0 on an Aegis list, who just flat out rinsed zackray when they met at Summit 3.

Kazuya KAZUYA - Riddles vs. Light, The Big House 10 - Grand Finals

Kazuya mains literally only want one thing and it's disgusting. Electric Wind God Fist was the menu item of choice at The Big House 10, going up against Light whose 2022 campaign was the stuff of legends. With Fox and Kazuya at the helm, stocks would fly off the tables left and right, quickly and efficiently. Just go and watch the set again, no words of mine would ever be able to do it justice on paper. It is also unfathomably based that both Riddles and aMSa got their first-ever major wins at the same event. Riddles has since taken Kazuya back to the top of the mountain at Collision '23, but this Big House win was beyond big. He did not sugarcoat it.
Honorable Mention: Riddles vs. MkLeo, Summit 5 - Pools - We've come a long way from when Riddles used Ken to battle Leo's Joker at Super Smash Con 2019, that is for sure.
Honorable Mention: Riddles vs. Sparg0, Gimvitational - Winners Quarters - Championship Sunday at the Gimvitational was a great time for Riddles to pickup his first win on Sparg0.
Honorable Mention: Tea vs. Riddles, Ultimate WANTED #4 - Losers Semis - You didn't think I'd miss out on the fabled KAZUYA MISHIMA ditto, did you?

Sora SORA - zackray vs. Shuton, Kagaribi#5 - Grand Finals

Facts don't care about your feelings, and frankly I don't care about them either. And the facts are that twelve days after Sora's release, zackray pulled up to Kagaribi#5 locked on Sora and won the entire bracket without dropping a single set. That is truly gigachad behavior. Since then Kameme has done incredible things with this character and is the true hero of Sora but for one weekend in October 2021 zackray was just that guy. Hell, maybe it was zackray's performance that inspired Kameme to work hard with this new character. Also, poor Shuton. Denied yet another major victory by zackray but this time via Mickey Mouse shenanigans, that's gotta sting.
Honorable Mention: Kameme vs. zackray, Umebura SP9 - Top 24 - Well well well, how the turn tables. The student (?) beats the master (???) with Kameme sending zackray to losers at Japan's first major of 2023.
Honorable Mention: Kameme vs. Asimo, MaesumaTOP#8 - Top 12 - Who would win? A super buff world warrior or one smol boi with a key?
Honorable Mention: Kameme vs. acola, Seibugeki #12 - Top 12 - We didn't get to see at Umebura SP9, but a month prior Kameme did contribute to the only non-top 8 of acola's career at Seibugeki #12, albeit in a BO3. Still, a win on Japan's best is a win.
And that's a wrap! I hope you enjoyed going through this charcuterie board of incredible plays, amazing wins, and bountiful history. All the entries will be consolidated into a single spreadsheet to be posted at a later date (along with some other nerdy stuff I've been working on on the side) so if you're interested in that stay tuned. Maybe we'll revisit this in another year or two and see how things stand.
Let's have an incredible Summit 6. Stay pogged, everyone.

2023.02.20 21:21 Tery_ Every Character's Best Win - Brawl Fighters

We're back with the ECBW project. I'll keep it a buck and let you know that I was halfway done with writeups when stuff got erased LOL but we persevere.
Here you can see the previous posts here for the 64 fighters and Melee fighters.
Let's get brawlin'.

MetaKnight META KNIGHT - Abadango vs. Shuton, Kagaribi#8 - Losers Finals

Abadango may have won Pound 2016 in the Smash 4 era and Umebura SP4 early on in Ultimate's life cycle, but otherwise he'd been quiet for the most part. However, that all changed for one little weekend in July 2022. Aba woke up and chose violence, flying through his bracket taking down the likes of Latte, Mao, and Yoshidora. Then after being sent to losers by Miya, his Meta Knight eliminated ProtoBanham in 3-0 fashion and reverse sweeping KEN, before facing the bulwark of Japan in Shuton. After bursting off a 2-0 lead - including a three stock on the Aegis - Shuton does as Shuton does and clawed his way back into the set forcing a game five. But Aba held firm and punched through into a rematch with Miya in grands. Although he would fall with the Palu again, this run will be remembered for a long time. especially by MK enthusiasts.
Honorable Mention: Abadango vs. Leon, Vienna Challengers Arena 2022 - Winners Semis - Aba showed up and showed out at VCA, piloting his variety of characters to 3rd place. French Leon had no answers for the masked ball of death.
Honorable Mention: Yei vs. Mr. E, Smash Factor 8 - Top 12 - Costa Rican talent Yei is recorded playing five different characters on his trip to SF8's top 8. Meta Knight helped defeat Lucina after Chrom folded.
Honorable Mention: BONK! vs. WaDi, Glitch 8.5 - Top 64 - On the run of his life, BONK! sent WaDi into losers in phase two pools (albeit a BO3) but I had to highlight the best MK player in the US.

PitDarkPit PIT & DARK PIT - zackray vs. Yoshidora, Kagaribi#9 - Losers Semis

Ah, the legend of zackray. Sometimes you return from a Pokemon Unite break and win a major, other times you buster out at 49th. For Kagaribi#9, he would show off his newest trick: Pit. Despite dropping into losers earlier than anticipated, zackray would proceed with the best losers run of the year thus far utilizing Pit's gorgeous aerial strings and precise arrow snipes. Then in losers semifinals vs. Yoshidora, both players would be taken to their limits in their first-ever meeting. With everything on the line, a perfectly placed dash attack sealed the deal. zackray was already on the greatest performance by a Pit player, so taking down Yoshidora was the cherry on top. If he sticks with Pit, we could very well see the character in grands someday.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. KEN, Kagaribi#9 - Losers Quarters - Whether it was evil (Sephiroth) or greater evil (Sonic), neither could stand up to the angel who can't read.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. Kameme, Kagaribi#9 - Top 12 - Floaty kids. Floaty kids everywhere. A shame both couldn't make it into top 8.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. Umeki, Kagaribi#9 - Top 32 - "Tery did you really just use four sets from zackray's K9 run?" You bet your ass I did. I don't know if you'd have recognized any of the eight names I had here prior to Kagaribi#9.

ZeroSuitSamus ZERO SUIT SAMUS - Marss vs. MkLeo, Genesis 7 - Grand Finals

As previously mentioned, only two players seemed to consistently step up to the challenge of defeating MkLeo's legendary Joker. Samsora was one, and of course Marss is the other. Prime Marss was an unbelievable force to be reckoned with, and look no further than what happened at Genesis 7. For three straight games, the ZSS danced circles around her opponent, scrapping and brawling away from the word "go." Turns out if you just beat the crap out of Joker, it doesn't matter if he has Arsene or not. In a set that lasted no longer than 15 minutes, Marss was unstoppable and prevented Leo from winning his 4th straight Genesis title. You 3-0 Leo? That's extremely impressive. You 3-0 Leo to win a major? That's going down in the history books.
Honorable Mention: Marss vs. MkLeo, Smash Factor 8 - Grand Finals - The first to ever slay the vaunted Leo Joker in grands. God gamer, content creator, Marss_NE. Praise be unto him.
Honorable Mention: Kuro vs. Kameme, Umebura SP6 - Grand Finals - Japan features a three-headed ZSS monster in Kuro, Choco, and shky, but only one of them has won a major. Also the only 4-0 you're gonna see as it was a sweep across two BO3s.
Honorable Mention: Marss vs. Kola, Genesis 8 - Top 64 - Marss and playing well at Genesis. Name a more iconic duo I'll wait. Anyway don't look up how he did at G6.

Wario WARIO - Glutonny vs. MkLeo, Pound 2022 - Grand Finals

Wario has seen many pilots come and gone. Tweek was a beast with him in the early years. The entire country of Japan seemingly had a pocket Wario. But only one man persevered through thick and thin: Glutonny. At Pound 2022, he had his work cut out for him. The previous week at Genesis 8, Gluto failed to take a single game off Leo in two sets. However, Gluto adapted 3-1'd Leo in winners semis before the grand finals rematch. Despite the blazing fast reset that Leo did, Gluto adapted once more and was able to claim victory over the GOAT in another 3-1. Fitting that the Emperor of Europe was the first EU player to win an NA major, over Leo no less. Also Christ, twelve games of Pokemon Stadium 2 across their three Pound sets. This epidemic needs to be stopped.
Honorable Mention: Glutonny vs. MkLeo, Summit 4 - Pools - We didn't know it at the time, but this set was the beginning of a very strong year in the Gluto / Leo rivalry and head-to-head.
Honorable Mention: Glutonny vs. Nairo, Genesis 7 - Top 12 - The final stock of this set is perhaps the almightiest example of Gluto executing a perfect string off a single mistake.
Honorable Mention: Tweek vs. MkLeo, Frostbite 2019 - Grand Finals - Pay respects to the OG. Tweek's Wario cleanly handles MkLeo's Lucina to claim Frostbite 2019.

Snake SNAKE - DIO vs. Miya, Umebura SP9 - Top 16

Umebura SP9 was the largest of the series, and DIO wracked up wins on Ly, Abadango, Noi, and Asimo on the way to 7th place. But two sets out from top 8 it looked like his journey would be ended by the Smashmate prodigies acola and Miya. With a horrific Snake vs. G&W matchup staring him in the face DIO did the unthinkable and powered through despite being down nearly 100% in game four. Unfortunately the recording cuts off before the end, but I can only assume some up tilt shenanigans were served. The craziest part about this Snake win is that on the exact same weekend at Let's Make Big Moves 2023, Chronos defeated Maister in the exact same matchup.
Honorable Mention: Ally vs. Myran. Pound 2019 - Grand Finals - To date, the only Snake to ever appear in grand finals of a major, let alone win one.
Honorable Mention: ApolloKage vs. Shuton, Mainstage 2022 - Top 32 - Shuton showed up to Mainstage hoping for a Summit spot. Instead, AK and his NA band sent the entire Japan squad into losers before top 16.
Honorable Mention: MVD vs. Zomba, CEO 2022 - Top 12 - We simply must pay homage to MVD, who has been doing it up on Snake for a long, long time. At CEO he took out Zomba for his lone top 8 appearance for the year.

Ike IKE - MkLeo vs. Samsora, Genesis 6 - Losers Finals

Remember when Ike was complained about? Simpler times man, simpler times. Of course, when MkLeo picks you up as a character that tends to happen. Early Ultimate Ike was a menace to deal with, thanks to those huge aerial swings of Ragnell commanding space supreme. Samsora learned this the hard way at Genesis 6, with the two players trading 3-2 set wins over each other in their first Ultimate faceoff, though Leo won the one that mattered. Give him a sword and he will use those large arcs with perfect spacing. Give him an exploitable recovery and he'll do just enough to make it back to stage. With Leo having used Ike for nearly ever set except grand finals (understandably so given his Pichu opponent), this is the closest Ike has ever come to winning a major.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Nairo, Frostbite 2019 - Top 12 - The VOD is lost to the abyss, but Leo duked it out against Nairo on the precipice of top 8 at the first Ultimate Frostbite.
Honorable Mention: Yez vs. TKM, Kagaribi#8 - Top 24 - The most recent Ike entry, Yez has been competing in Japan for a while, nabbing this TKM win on the way to finishing just outside top 8.
Honorable Mention: Ryuga vs. Goblin, Frostbite 2019 - Top 16 - Another Frostbite selection, Ryuga hasn't been active since post-lockdown but was one of the founding fathers of this character.

PokemonTrainer POKEMON TRAINER - Tweek vs. Dabuz, Low Tier City 7 - Grand Finals

One of the most electrifying grand finals sets in Ultimate history, Low Tier City 7 featured the first that ever went the full distance, as Tweek and Dabuz quite literally traded ten games back-and-forth in a match for the ages. There was a ton of significance surrounding this LTC7 set. For starters, this was the debut of Tweek's Pokemon Trainer, which he used to great effect. Dabuz was fighting for his first major dub after coming up just short vs. Glutonny the week prior at Albion 4. Most importantly, this win brought Tweek's trophy total to five - matching Leo. At this point in time it was no understatement to say that Tweek / Leo ruled Ultimate as two kings. Not only is this one of the best grand finals ever, it's also one of the best popoffs thanks to Tweek's explosion at the end.
Honorable Mention: Quidd vs. Kola, Let's Make Big Moves 2022 - Grand Finals - Did someone say Quidd games?! This kid showed up to the first major of 2022, beat Kola for the trophy, and then promptly vanished off the face of the Earth.
Honorable Mention: Atelier vs. Tea, Kagaribi#3 - Winners Finals - At the first major post-lockdown, Atelier went on the run of his life, flashing Pokemon Trainer's abilities to 2nd and getting a Tea dub along the way.
Honorable Mention: Leffen vs. Tweek, Summit 2 - Losers Round 1 - TSM's two trainers tussle in the first round of Summit 2. What happens next may shock you. I debated between this or Leffen vs. Salem for the memes.

DiddyKong DIDDY KONG - Tweek vs. MkLeo, Summit 3 - Grand Finals

As Summit 3 got underway, things weren't looking hot for Tweek. The Diddy struggled in pools but managed to escape gauntlet to winner's side. But on championship Sunday, everything clicked. He beat Leo, Marss, and Sparg0 only to encounter Leo once more in grands. Just like their first set, Tweek's Diddy seemingly had all the answers for MkLeo's Pyra / Mythra. The evasion, the combos, the recoveries, it all flowed naturally for Tweek as he was able to climb the Summit and claim victory. Going with Diddy despite the early struggles and then 6-0'ing Leo is ultimately the peak of Tweek's Ultimate career thus far, and the TSM star had turned another chapter in his book.
Honorable Mention: Tweek vs. Sparg0, Let's Make Big Moves 2023 - Grand Finals - It would be foolish to not include the banger sets between Tweek and Sparg0 over the last couple of months. Here is Tweek defending home turf.
Honorable Mention: Etsuji vs. ProtoBanham, MaesumaTOP#8 - Losers Eighths - In a stunner, Etsuji sends Proto out of the tournament with a 3-1 victory that saw his Diddy demolish Proto's two characters.
Honorable Mention: Aaron vs. Tweek, Summit 3 - Pools - What is up with Tweek and these character dittos at Summit? Aaron straight outplayed him and forced him off Diddy.

Lucas LUCAS - ChocoTaco vs. Kola, Let's Make Big Moves 2022 - Top 128

Lucas mains have been quietly doing their thing despite being overshadowed by Ness' theatrics. They just don't have that one premier player - they don't have their version of Gackt, for example. However, Florida's ChocoTaco had his shining moment when in LMBM '22 pools he defeated Kola in a five game set. Of course, without backing video there's really not much to talk about. ChocoTaco unfortunately didn't make it much further, finishing at 25th while Kola went on a bonkers losers run to grands. However the Lucas pack has a bevy of solid victories in their pockets, as you'll see below.
Honorable Mention: Nitox vs. Space, COLOSSEL 2022 - Top 16 - At Europe's largest event ever, Nitox took Lucas on a deep run to 9th, defeating an old stalwart in Space along the way.
Honorable Mention: Regalo vs. ApolloKage, Super Smash Con 2022 - Top 16 - Regalo got big wins at SSC '22, including the likes of yonni, ChunkyKong, and here ApolloKage.
Honorable Mention: Nitox vs. Chag, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2022 - Top 32 - Nitox is back at it again, this time sending home Mexican invader Chag at UFA before falling to another invader in Jake.

Sonic SONIC - Sonix vs. Riddles, CEO 2022 - Grand Finals

Much like his main, Sonix rushed onto the scene post-quarantine and never looked back. A pair of 9ths at CEO and SWT closed out his 2021 and then started 2022 with a pair of 5ths at Pound and MomoCon. Sidenote: crazy that two CEO events were just six months apart. Anyway, Toast reverse swept Sonix in CEO 2022 top 24 sending him to losers. In Sonix' following seven sets leading to grand finals, he dropped zero games. Those in his warpath included the likes of WaDi, Tweek, and Dabuz. We were then treated to a ten game slugfest between Sonic the hedgehog and Terry Bogard (guest feature from Kazuya Mishima). In the end, spinning blue ball of death claimed his first major victory.
Honorable Mention: Sonix vs. MkLeo, Let's Make Big Moves 2023 - Losers Semis - Sonix started off his year on the right foot: by grabbing his first offline win against the GOAT.
Honorable Mention: Sonix vs. Sparg0, Genesis 9 - Top 12 - At Genesis 9 Sonix rocked Sparg0 so hard he switched off Aegis onto Cloud. That uh, didn't work out the way Sparg0 had hoped.
Honorable Mention: KEN vs. Riddles, Battle of BC 4 - Top 12 - Sonic mains you've got to stop doing this to Riddles, the poor kid has seen enough spinning blue hedgehogs for the rest of his life.

KingDedede KING DEDEDE - Peli vs. Leon, Vienna Challengers Arena 2021 - Winners Finals

Peli is a most curious individual. The Brit uses two very different characters in Sonic and King Dedede. The VCA '21 champion ran with Sonic in grands to defeat Glutonny, but the previous WF set against French Leon showcased the full strength of Dedede. With a minefield of Gordos and bulky aerials, the king commanded space all throughout the series. Leon tried the Lucina, and even her father Chrom stepped in, but at the end of the day a pair of Falchions could not stop the jet hammer from swinging Peli's way into grand finals. Another candidate was the prior set, where Peli fell behind 0-2 to Space on Sonic before switching to Dedede and completing the 3-0 comeback.
Honorable Mention: Atomsk vs. Dark Wizzy, Summit 3 - Pools - Gameplay aside, the post-game quip by Atomsk is one of the best of all-time and for that reason alone earns a slot.
Honorable Mention: ZAKI vs. Lui$, Prime Saga - Top 48 - Japan's premier D3 player attended his first NA Ult major and snagged 25th. Fun fact: he also got 33rd at EVO later that year.
Honorable Mention: Atomsk vs. Gen, Pound 2019 - Top 48 - Atomsk took down Gen in a close 3-2 set all the way back at Pound 2019 in what I can only assume is a Dedede / Palu matchup.

Olimar OLIMAR - Shuton vs. Kome, EVO Japan 2020 - Grand Finals

When you think of Olimar, you think of Dabuz and Shuton. Unfortunately for the former, he's yet to win a major and so the spotlight belongs to the latter. EVO Japan 2020 is one of the largest SSBU tournaments of all time and Shuton emerged from the horde victorious over Kome when all was said and done. This set had a lot of back-and-forth despite what the final scoreline indicates, and featured weaving recoveries and wacky kills from both characters. During game one Shuton got KO's at 209% and 93%, which is just a funny juxtaposition. Out of Shuton's three major victories, EVO Japan definitely stands a cut above the rest.
Honorable Mention: Shuton vs. zackray, Prime Saga - Grand Finals - Honestly a coinflip between grands here or Umebura SP5, but the clean dispatching of two zackray characters edges out the ten game gigabanger at USP5.
Honorable Mention: Dabuz vs. Nairo, Glitch 7 - Losers Semis - While I didn't watch this one live, I can only imagine what the Twitch chat was like during this set.
Honorable Mention: Myran vs. Marss, Pound 2019 - Losers Finals - Myran jumpscare! He made grands at Pound 2019 by reverse sweeping Marss in dramatic fashion.

Lucario LUCARIO - Armadillo vs. Jake, Let's Make Big Moves 2023 - Top 128

Unfortunately for Lucario, it's popularity in the Pokemon world hasn't transferred over to Smash Ultimate in quite the same way. Tsu was the premier Lucario at Ultimate's launch but has since picked up a variety of other characters. Thankfully Armadillo had a very solid run at LMBM this year and picked up a pair of nice wins in Jake and quiK. Even though we don't have a recording of their game, the fact that a Lucario beat a Steve - and one of Jake's caliber - is no small feat. As far as disparities in general character ability it doesn't get much more extreme than this (helps that Steve is the best character in the game). Major props to Armadillo for causing one of the biggest upsets of the tournament and going all the way to 17th.
Honorable Mention: Armadillo vs. quiK, Let's Make Big Moves 2023 - Top 64 - In the only entry with video, Armadillo rode the momentum off his Jake win into a date with quiK for a chance at top 32.
Honorable Mention: Tsu vs. Abadango, Umebura Japan Major 2019 - Top 16 - Years before their Kagaribi#9 clown fiesta of a counterpick war, Tsu's Lucario sent Aba's Inkling and Wario out of UJM at 13th.
Honorable Mention: Tsu vs. Kuro, EGS Cup 3 - Top 32 - Without VOD evidence it's tough to verify if Tsu - a man of many pockets - only used Lucario, but we'll have to make do for now.

ROB R.O.B. - zackray vs. Dabuz, The Big House 9 - Grand Finals

When zackray debuted his ROB to the North American audience, VikkiKitty remarked on how he had "very Wolf tendencies with the ROB" in how zackray got aggressive and boxed with ROB's great options. Fast forward to two months later and we saw more of that in the grand finals reset at TBH9 vs. Dabuz. After Wolf forced true finals, he passed the baton over to ROB who then dealt with Rosalina & Luma efficiently. Luma was harassed all set with projectiles and aerials, while stocks got deleted off well-placed smash attacks. zackray utilized all of ROB's tools to the fullest in order to claim his second major title, and we've yet to see a robot player match the heights he reached since.
Honorable Mention: Zomba vs. Light, Ludwig Smash Invitational - Top 16 - Zomba's report card from Ludwig's was insane: Asimo, acola, Sonix, and then when elimination came into the picture, the #1 seed Light.
Honorable Mention: Anathema vs. Onin, Rise 'N Grind - Losers Eighths - Y'know Steve is a pretty good character, but ROB is a pretty big character. As they say, bigger is better, and Anathema proved that in this encounter against Onin.
Honorable Mention: Zomba vs. Cosmos, Glitch: Infinite - Winners Finals - Since his breakout showing at Smash World Tour, Zomba carried that momentum and became the first ROB since zackray to make finals at a major.

ToonLink TOON LINK - Manzoku vs. Gackt, MaesumaTOP#8 - Top 128

Toon Link has long lived under the shadow of the other two Links. BotW Link saw early success with T and Salem while Young Link is consistently rated as a very strong character with breakout runs from time to time. The Wind Waker legend however sees almost zero representation stateside but Japan does sport three of their own (with a missed opportunity of a 4th to complete the set). Manzoku is one of the forefathers of Link and has been around since the Brawl era, so it's only fitting that he earns the top spot with his win on Gackt at MaesumaTOP. Despite it being only in top 128 (and Gackt's overall struggles at the series), I'd rate Gackt a tier above the other opponents you'll see in the honorable mentions section.
Honorable Mention: Sigma vs. NaetorU, Genesis 9 - Top 48 - Sigma had a very respectable NA debut, placing 25th at a stacked Genesis 9. Watch as he erases NaetorU in three games.
Honorable Mention: Lv.1 vs. Huto, Kagaribi#9 - Top 24 - Rounding out Japan's Toon Link hydra is Lv.1, who grabbed a Huto win at Kagaribi#9 before bowing out of the event at 9th.
Honorable Mention: Sigma vs. Jogibu, MaesumaTOP#9 - Top 16 - Not only is this another BO5, it's at another event with a 9 in the title, which is simply the wackiest of coincidences.

Wolf WOLF - zackray vs. Dabuz, The Big House 9 - Grand Finals

When you think of Wolf, you have the early pioneers like Tweek, Jakal, and Larry Lurr along with the "new age" Wolves in Ouch!?, Atelier, and Masha. But aside from Tweek only zackray has piloted Wolf in grand finals and so we double dip with The Big House 9. Nevermind that zackray used about 100 characters on his way to grands, but the Wolf decimated Dabuz' Olimar in three games (and two two-stocks) and forced out the Rosalina for the reset. Wolf's list of strong wins is quite the bibliography that is impossible to cover with merely four entries (Tweek vs. Dark Wizzy, Jakal vs. Riddles, the list goes on), but it's hard to ignore a set that directly contributed to a major win, even if they weren't using him to finish the job.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. Light, Genesis 6 - Top 12 - He's just standing there...menacingly! And as a result Light had no answers.
Honorable Mention: Ouch!? vs. Shuton, Battle of BC 4 - Losers Quarters - Ouch!? jumped Shuton at BoBC4, taking a 2-0 lead before the Olimar clapped back. The final game showcased Wolf at his finest.
Honorable Mention: Wizzrobe vs. Tweek, Smash 'N' Splash 5 - Top 64 - Leon / Cosmos was not the only insane upset at SNS5, as Melee legend Wizzrobe beat #1 seed Tweek en route to top 8'ing both Ultimate and Melee in absolute gigachad fashion.

2023.02.04 21:00 Tery_ Every Character's Best Win - Melee Fighters

We're back with the ECBW project. Sorry for the long delay from the first post - got the new Fire Emblem game (awesome) and also COVID (less awesome). For the criteria and general thought process, here's a refresher.
You can see the previous post for the 64 fighters here.
Let's get into the Melee squad.

PeachDaisy PEACH & DAISY - Samsora vs. MkLeo, Shine 2019 - Grand Finals

During the summer of 2019, the MkLeo Joker was on a rampage. CEO, EVO, and more were all stolen by the phantom thief. At Super Smash Con, Samsora was able to send Leo to losers but would come up short in the grands rematch. Two weeks later at Shine, history would repeat itself as Samsora defeated Leo 3-1 in winners finals. After a quick dispatching of Nairo, Leo would return to grands, force a reset after five games, and go up one game in true finals. Just when you thought it was another Leo sweep, Samsora activated. Bobbing his way through disgusting combos, patiently dealing with and evading Arsene, even killing Leo before Arsene could come out. Defeating the legendary game 4 Leo and claiming your character's first and only major win is a deadly combination and well-deserving of the best win.
Honorable Mention: Samsora vs. MkLeo, Super Smash Con 2019 - Winners Semis - This ended up more of a Peach-Leo showcase that anything else but for good reason. Here's every player to take multiple sets off the Leo Joker (at majors): Samsora, Marss. That's it. That's the list. Thus, it snipes an HM slot from any Umeki win. Sorry Umeki...
Honorable Mention: MuteAce vs. Sparg0, Low Tide City 2022 - Top 12 - MuteAce shocked the world by defeating Sparg0 in a five game thriller at Low Tier--I mean Lost Tech--I mean Low Tide City.
Honorable Mention: MuteAce vs. MkLeo - Winners Finals - This was originally Mute's acola win at Let's Make Moves Miami. But after you beat Leo to conclude a string of Maister, acola, Glutonny, and Light wins? Uh yeah that's getting here.

Bowser BOWSER - HERO vs. ProtoBanham, MaesumaTOP#9 - Losers Quarters

The venerable king of Koopas has two main champions, but Japanese hero HERO will be the focus today. HERO has kept activity levels low since emerging post-quarantine, but he has made nearly each and every appearance count. 4th at Kagaribi#4, 3rd at MaesumaTOP#6, 5th at MaesumaTOP#10, etc. While HERO's peak run was a 2nd place finish at MaesumaTOP#8, his peak win was a 3-0 clobbering of Double Down champion ProtoBanham. The big burly Bowser brawled his way past both the Lucina and Min Min, sending Proto out of the tournament at 5th. HERO actually has quite the impressive record on the dual threat, up 3-1 all-time (though in Proto's defense, two of those losses he suffered were BO3 format). If Bowser is to ever climb the mountain and win his first major, it will be thanks to the efforts of HERO.
Honorable Mention: HERO vs. Yoshidora, MaesumaTOP#8 - Winners Semis - A preview of the grands to come between these two later in the day. Bit of an anticlimactic ending but oh well.
Honorable Mention: LeoN vs. Cosmos, Smash 'N' Splash 5 - Top 16 - One of the greatest upset performances in Ultimate history, LeoN nearly nine stocks Cosmos at SNS5. As the top Youtube comment mentions, this was a public execution.
Honorable Mention: HERO vs. Kameme, MaesumaTOP#10 - Winners Quarters - A hat trick of HERO honors at MaesumaTOP events concludes this time with Kameme falling to the Koopa King.

IceClimbers ICE CLIMBERS - Big D vs. Riddles, Get On My Level 2022 - Losers Finals

Western Canada vs. eastern Canada for a chance to represent Canada at a Canadian major. Did I mention Canada? Anyways, after having gotten 3-0'd by Riddles in their previous meeting at Battle of BC 4, Big D came in with big adjustments for a dominating 3-0 of his own. No matter if it opposing character was Terry or Kazuya, the Ice Climbers stayed cool calm and collected with their devastating combo game and ledge traps. As a result, we got to see Popo and Nana in grand finals of a major for the first time since 2017. And with how the rest of Big D's year turned out, you could argue this set was the first piece of the puzzle.
Honorable Mention: Big D vs. Light, Ludwig Smash Invitational - Pools - First round of Swiss pools at LSI was pretty standard. You know, just Big D crushing the event's #1 seed Light. No big deal.
Honorable Mention: Big D vs. zackray, Mainstage - Top 48 - Long before zackray lost to Harasen, he got eliminated very early at Mainstage by Big D. Easily the highlight of Big D's otherwise uneventful 2019.
Honorable Mention: Futari no Kiwami Ah~! vs. Yoshidora, Kagaribi#8 - Losers Eighths - One of the best aliases in Smash, Futari no Kiwami Ah~! reverse sweeps Yoshidora in stunning fashion. Including a baller way to close out the set.

Sheik SHEIK - VoiD vs. zackray, Frostbite 2020 - Top 96

Sheik pickings are tough. I'm gonna go controversial here with an oldie but a goodie (I don't even know if this is controversial). VoiD has long been a believer in Ultimate Sheik, and this was one of the character's earliest wins against one of the game's very best players. Let's not forget that in early 2020 zackray was fresh off a win at EGS Cup 3 and a 5th place finish at EVO Japan. After handling the zackray G&W but then getting unceremoniously three-stocked by ROB (thanks to an SD assist), VoiD stuck to his needles and made a meal out of the combo food that is ROB. With clean conversions, VoiD proved that Sheik can kill. For bonus points, this might have laid inspiration for zackray later down the line as you'll see in the HM's.
Honorable Mention: Eim vs. Gackt, Seibugeki #8 - Losers Finals - Eim and Sylph pioneer this character in Japan, with the former making grands at Seibugeki #8. He would end up just a game away from a Sheik major win.
Honorable Mention: Rox vs. Sonix, Smash Factor 9 - Top 32 - Look I'm not saying that Sonic SD'ing three times across three games is hilarious, but I'm not NOT saying that ya feel? Plus Rox played out of his damn mind.
Honorable Mention: zackray vs. ProtoBanham, Kagaribi#6 - Top 12 - If you want to talk about player-specific counterpicks, how about zackray picking up Sheik to deal with Proto's deadly one-two punch?

Zelda ZELDA - ven vs. ESAM, Prime Saga - Top 48

Lord help me but I don't think there will be a single Zelda VOD here for any of her victories. Apologies to all the Zelda mains out there putting in the work. Anyway, from what I could find, ven took a dub on ESAM at Prime Saga back in the spring of 2019 - and that has easily stood the test of time as the character's signature win. It also coincides with ven's highest career placing at 17th, so all things considered that's pretty good. Not really much else to say, that's gonna be the case for any main entries that don't have supporting VODs to go with it.
Honorable Mention: Naskino vs. Mezcaul, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2022 - Top 48 - Four years after ven got his 17th, French Zelda Naskino did the same at UFA '22. Here, he sent Ridley specialist Mezcaul home. At least, that's what I assume without VOD proof.
Honorable Mention: Yn vs. Kirihara, Umebura SP9 - Top 48 - First NA, then EU, now Japan. Yn's win on Kirihara was his best en route to a 25th place at Umebura SP9, which also happens to be his best tournament run.
Honorable Mention: ven vs. Magister, Genesis 7 - Top 48 - What a coincidence that every Zelda entry has been from the same spot in bracket. Well, that or laziness. More unfortunate is the lack of VODs. Ah the wonderful life of a low tier...

DrMario DR. MARIO - Tsumusuto vs. Shirayuki, MaesumaTOP#9 - Winners Semis

Thankfully, Dr. Mario is so bad that nobody has ever piloted this character to say, 3rd place at a major. That'd be wild. And even if the stars aligned for such a magical run, there's no way they would beat the best Inkling in the world. So anyway let me tell you a story of how Tsumusuto, a Dr. Mario main, secured a top 3 finish at MaesumaTOP#9. His practice of choice included perfectly placed pills and silencing Shirayuki stocks with strong strikes. Even though he would lose the runback in a five game losers finals, Tsumusuto's run is nothing short of impressive. We may never seen anything like this from a bottom five character again.
Honorable Mention: Tsumusuto vs. Masha, MaesumaTOP#9 - Winners Quarters - Before he took down Shirayuki, Tsumusuto had a date with Wolf main Masha in WQF.
Honorable Mention: Shissho vs. yuzu, MaesumaTOP#10 - Top 64 - Another notable Japanese doctor, Shissho made it to 25th at the most recent MaesumaTOP, taking out Rosalina main yuzu along the way.
Honorable Mention: Tsumusuto vs. Shissho, JAPAN 24 - Pools - Yup, your eyes do not deceive you that is in fact a Dr. Mario ditto. Oh Japan, may you never change as long as Ultimate lives.

Pichu PICHU - VoiD vs. Samsora, Genesis 6 - Winners Finals

Pichu has fielded a variety of threats at his position throughout Ultimate's lifespan, but none were as great as legendary gamer VoiD. His 2019 kicked off with a gorgeous Genesis run, where he grabbed victories on the likes of Shuton, ESAM, zackray, and then finally Samsora en route to a spot on winner's side of grand finals. VoiD demonstrated the variety of Pichu's strengths between the ridiculous combos, efficient kill confirms, and dear god almighty that move called forward tilt. It is an early selection to be sure, but thanks to a combination of nerfs and lower activity, top level Pichu results are a difficult find though there is new hope as you'll see in the mentions.
Honorable Mention: NaetorU vs. Bloom4Eva, COLOSSEL 2022 - Top 24 - France vs. the United Kingdom in top 24 of Europe's largest major ever. Pichu extraordinate NaetorU took down rising star Bloom4Eva on the winner's side of things before being double eliminated by Mexico.
Honorable Mention: VoiD vs. Nairo, Smash 'N' Splash 5 - Top 32 - A Smash 4 classic, this time it's VoiD who takes the lead in the head-to-head, also leading to one of Nairo's worst placings ever.
Honorable Mention: Nietono vs. Kameme, Umebura SP3 - Grand Finals - While it's a gross BO3 in a grand finals of a major (c'mon Japan), it's still the only Pichu major win plus it was over one of the titans of 2019 Ultimate.

Falco FALCO - Tilde vs. Glutonny, Smash World Tour 2021 - Pools

Larry Lurr once famously asked, "does everyone hate Falco?" Glutonny might not have even known who the character was when he ran into the Tilde at the SWT championships. The best Falco in the world made the best player in Europe look completely lost for three straight games as the set wrapped up in under 12 minutes (even less of actual game time). You probably aren't gonna find many other sets of top players getting rolled that quickly (though a certain Steve vs. Byleth matchup may come to mind). Tilde was also able to parlay that win into a strong 2022 campaign, just barely missing top 8 at a bevy of majors. Should that trend continue, we may see Falco reaching new heights in 2023.
Honorable Mention: Tilde vs. Maister, Let's Make Big Moves 2023 - Top 64 - We nearly had another Tilde v. Gluto entry at LMBM if not for one of the craziest wafts of all time so instead here's his win over Maister.
Honorable Mention: MASA vs. Kameme, MaesumaTOP#8 - Losers Quarters - MASA pilots the best Falco in Japan, and he flew all the way to a top four finish while eliminating Kameme at 5th.
Honorable Mention: Larry Lurr vs. Ouch!?, Battle of BC 4 - Top 64 - A section on the Falco agenda simply would not be complete without an appearance by their godfather. Thank you Larry.

Marth MARTH - MkLeo vs. Riddles, Scuffed World Tour - Round 1

At ScWT, it seemed like Leo was out of the frying pan and into the fire. After escaping Ferps' Kazuya he was face-to-face against Riddles' Kazuya which jumped to a 2-0 lead. Down but not out, you could hear the incredulity in L4st's voice as Leo picked "Marth?!" EE even asked if there was any advantage to doing this and none of the couch could come up with a response. Then over the next three games Leo had to remind us all why he's the goddamn GOAT. Dancing Blade? Tippers. Aerials? Tippers. Dash attack?! Tippers. An absolutely insane showcase of Marth gameplay and at the end of the day MkLeo defeated KAZUYA MISHIMA with MARTH FIRE EMBLEM. He reailly is just built different.
Honorable Mention: MkLeo vs. Greward, Ultimate Fighting Arena 2019 - Top 24 - The first time we saw Leo draw Marth's blade was in Europe at UFA '19. While it couldn't go all the way this was the early taste test of the character.
Honorable Mention: Kreeg vs. Sonido, Genesis 9 - Top 128 - Probably the premier Marth main of the present, Kreeg finished 49th at Genesis 9 taking out Sonido before falling to Nao.
Honorable Mention: Rizeasu vs. HERO, JAPAN 24 - Pools - Proto may struggle with Bowser, but the same cannot be said for Rizeasu who utilized the Hero-King to defeat the Koopa King.

YoungLink YOUNG LINK - Toast vs. Light, Frostbite 2020 - Top 12

Man, Frostbite was such a good series, it will be missed dearly. This was the scene of the crime where Toast went on the run of his life, walking out of pools and then taking down Kameme and Samsora in back-to-back sets. He would get denied top 8 by Maister and so a fight with Light would decide his fate. After a back-and-forth set, Toast opens up the decisive game five by going absolutely nuclear and deleting two Fox stocks. But Light does as Light does, methodically and quickly clawing his way back evening out the situation. With the midwest crowd pouring their love and energy behind him, Toast clutched up as he punched his ticket to the first top 8 of his - and any Young Link main's - career.
Honorable Mention: Toast vs. Sonix, CEO 2022 - Top 24 - From old to new, Toast stays winning. Unfortunately there's no VOD for this, but Toast pulled off an improbable reverse 3-0 on the eventual CEO champion.
Honorable Mention: Jdizzle vs. Peli, Smash World Tour 2021 - Pools - One of the best Young Links in the world, Australia's top dog Jdizzle showed VCA '21 winner Peli what's up at SWT.
Honorable Mention: Supahsemmie vs. Leon, Ultimate WANTED #4 - Top 32 - Supahsemmie is pretty much the only notable Link of any flavor in Europe, and he sent Leon into losers at UW4 earlier than expected.

Ganondorf GANONDORF - Nairo vs. Light, Collision 2019 - Losers Semis

Toward the conclusion of Collision 2019, Nairo found himself in a bind. He was facing elimination against Light after getting steamrolled the first two games. The trusty Palutena wasn't working. The ZSS pick wasn't working. And so with his tournament life on the line, Nairo turned to the most beautiful waifu of them all: Ganondorf. Hang on, what? That can't be right. He must have exited the bracket after a switch like that. Oh he two-stocked Light game three? Okay but the gimmicks surely ended after that. Wait Light is dying to Wizard's Foot off-stage. Wait Light is getting hit by Fsmash from behind. Wait Light just got reverse 3-0'd by Ganondorf. This isn't just the best Ganon win in Ultimate, this is the best Ganon win in all of Smash history. The holy grail.
Honorable Mention: Higachan vs. Atelier, JAPAN 24 - Pools - Atelier had a year to forget in 2022. And it ended on a pretty sour note drowning in pools at JAPAN 24, losing 3-1 to Higachan. Put Ganon in the Elite Four.
Honorable Mention: Gungnir vs. Horkeu, MaesumaTOP#9 - Top 64 - Another notable Ganondorf in Japan, Gungir got 33rd in his second major appearance. Funnily enough, he'd exit the tourney after a loss to Atelier.
Honorable Mention: Rickles vs. Shady, Riptide 2021 - Top 192 - Rickles is perhaps the most well-known Ganondorf main, who also nabbed a 33rd during Riptide 2021. I'm noticing a lack of VODs here for this character...

Mewtwo MEWTWO - WaDi vs. Sparg0, Riptide 2021 - Top 12

In the most surprising find of the project thus far, WaDi took down Sparg0 in a set that not many seem to know about, myself included. With ROB having fallen to the Aegis, WaDi reached into his bag of tricks and switched in the powerful Psychic Pokemon. Thanks to a combination of strong aerials and great ledgetrapping, he was able to give himself the edge over the breakout star. Even though Sparg0 hit him with the classic "I'm just gonna three stock you and not lose" in game four, WaDi collected himself and sealed the deal with two stocks to spare. With limited presence at the top level just by numbers or being on the bench, this Sparg0 win will stand tall for a long, long time.
Honorable Mention: WaDi vs. Dabuz, Glitch 8.5 - Top 16 - Of all the players to find themselves on the receiving end of a WaDi Mewtwo win, Dabuz would have been one of the last people I'd guess.
Honorable Mention: WaDi vs. MVD, Riptide 2021 - Top 48 - Right before his clash with Sparg0, WaDi also dealt down a former labelmate MVD with solo Mewtwo.
Honorable Mention: Zenkai vs. IcyMist, Frostbite 2020 - Top 96 - Stepping away from the WaDi show for BO3 business, we have a different Mewtwo in Zenkai with their appearance at Frostbite 2020.

Roy ROY - Kola vs. Glutonny, CEO 2021 - Grand Finals

Despite all the blazing power of Roy, no one else has been able to really do it like Kola. While there's a laundry list of impressive names that Kola has taken down (Dabuz, Riddles, acola, to name but a few), it's tough to beat the Glutonny win that sealed Kola's only major win to date. After being sent to losers by MuteAce at CEO 2021, Kola had more than an uphill battle to climb needing to take down the ever-patient opponent in two sets. This was a fantastic series between members of the base roster, with Roy and Wario trading devastating combos and advantage states back and forth. And of course it all ended as many fights against the binding boy end: backwards aerial. With his CEO win, it cemented Kola's ascension to the highest echelon of player and burgeoning consistency heading into 2022.
Honorable Mention: Kola vs. Light, Summit 5 - Winners Semis - Right before he got reverse swept by ProtoBanham in winners finals, he did the same to Moist teammate Light. You win some, you lose some.
Honorable Mention: Kola vs. Sparg0, Gimvitational - Losers Eighths - How about another reverse 3-0 but this time against Sparg0? Oh and Kola started championship Sunday from losers and made it all the way to 4th.
Honorable Mention: HIKARU vs. Kameme, JAPAN 24 - Winners Semis - What is up with these Roy players and making huge comebacks? The victim this time: friendship.

MrGameAndWatch MR. GAME & WATCH - Miya vs. Abadango, Kagaribi#8 - Grand Finals

Fans of Maister look away, as it was not he who took home G&W's first major win, but instead the Japanese prodigy Miya. Though active in 2019, Miya emerged out of 2021 and the fires of Smashmate a completely new man, or maybe a piece of paper. After a meager 65th at MaesumaTOP#8, he showed up and showed out at Kagaribi#8. Notable opponents fell left and right: ProtoBanham, Futari no Kiwami Ah~!, and Shuton could not take down the 2D menace. In grand finals, he had to defeat multi-character specialist Abadango who was on a crazy run of his own. But through the mighty powers of up+B, Miya would ascend and put the flat character on the top of the mountain. Move aside zackray, Japan has a true G&W threat now.
Honorable Mention: Maister vs. Glutonny, Smash Factor 8 - Losers Semis - Maister officially arrived at Smash Factor 8, running all the way top 3 and swiftly six-stocking the best player in Europe along the way.
Honorable Mention: Miya vs. Onin, Scuffed World Tour - Top 16 - Although Maister also defeated Onin in a dramatic reverse sweep, Miya showed up to his 2nd NA event and just straight dismantled the 2nd best Steve in the world.
Honorable Mention: Maister vs. MkLeo, COLOSSEL 2022 - Winners Finals - Nobody and let me repeat, NOBODY, beats Maister 12 or 18 or however many times in a row. Not even the GOAT.
