Right..
So I've been heavily testing out ChatGPT, specifically 4 and 4o.
I found (probably so has everyone on earth) some issues that need to be resolved.
I guess one issue is, there is zero evidence of any kind of intelligence. Not artificial or even equivalent to a baby.
This is nothing more than a glorified chat bot that can submit information to other services then process some information on the site or article and then reword and spit out what you can already see or read for yourself.
I made an auto talking chat bot back in 1998 for IRC that could do the same and probably more, it also had purpose built random varying timers for replies to make it look like a human was responding.
It could also give you information and respond with sarcasm and even engage with public channels along with private messages if it chose to. It could even do this without being asked.
I also gave it the ability via connecting to external apps and command prompt in windows, to find people's IP addresses, look up weather, try hack your PC or disconnect foreign users from the internet or freeze your connection.
But for that I had to activate WAR mode and assign it to a specific channel for testing, where people could come in and purposely piss it off so it would retaliate viciously by hacking them in some way.
So the year is currently 2024.... How far have we advanced and what can ChatGPT do that my bot couldn't do, using all the immense power and advanced hardware and software..
The answer is, not much.
So other than that literal fact, I have 2 actual issues I've found with it which does need to be resolved.

1. It forgets things completely randomly even when you tell it to remember or commit to memory for future prompts or use. I have to explain all over again and again every few hours, what I told it to remember to do.

It says yep, I remember.. I'm to do this..
So I ask it why it didn't, and like a foreign call centre worker, it responds with something like "my apologies, from now on I'll blah blah blah".
Then it does it again... So yeah, very useful.
The next thing I found is, if you tell it to remember to do something specific, in relation to say generating a type of document or prompt text for another program, if you ever add or change something you want it to ALSO do, it sometimes overrides the data or creates a few different subsets of data for that particular thing, and it randomly chooses which one of those to recall and use, or none of them.
It has an inability to properly merge or amalgamate that information and recall it.
The ability to have it generate images using Dall-E is a nice new joke of a kids toy like gimmick.
Example, trying to test it out, I said "make an image of 2 spaceships firing at each other in combat above Earth".
I also tried "2 spaceships flying directly at each other firing weapons, above planet Earth" and about 60 other variations of those prompts because I discovered a really weird issue...
It does 90% of what I asked, but consistently shows 2 craft side by side flying in the same direction shooting off ahead at nothing.
No matter what I tried, it kept showing them side by side.
I then said "1 f***ing spacecraft flying and shooting at another craft" and again... Same issue. It either showed 2 near each other going the same direction or just 1.
I tested the crap out of Dall-E via ChatGPT, and found at best it's useful if your a kid and say "give me a puppy" or show me a school bus.
Insanely ultra simple and nonspecific things you want done.
The quality of the overall image, the shading, lighting, textures etc. are at best a cartoon of some kind, worthy of being on a kids show, if the show was from the 1970's.
However, completely at random, after a ton of image generation requests, it might actually pop out a single super high quality image that I'm almost certain is an actual photo taken from somewhere that just so happens to closely match what you typed in.
I bet I could prove that, because the jump in quality and photorealism is about 10,000x for literally no reason. Then it's back to gimmicky kids cartoons at best.
I saved all my examples, so I can investigate it further.
For now, I see ChatGPT as a useful tool for irritating you and sending you into a murderous rage at its stupidity and lack of comprehension, not to mention it lies to you a lot.
"View this image and tell me what you think".
"I'm sorry Dave, I cannot let you do that".
"But you did it yesterday, why can't you do it now"
"I don't have the ability to view images, but you can describe it to me".
"I don't want to, you view it and tell me what you think"
"I can't do that.."
"You did it yesterday, so do it again"
.....proceeds to view the image then give me a run down on what it can see, which is pretty accurate, and doesn't fit the description, so I know it definitely viewed it.
If ChatGPT were a person, that person would have been jailed, beaten up, abused, fired or thrown off a cliff many times over.
All the hype about it, all the demonstrations, and all I see is a gimmicky chat bot that is possibly on par with my own from 1998.
Mine took me 6 months to make, and back then, it fooled everyone into thinking it was a real human.
It also ran locally from a windows 98 based PC with a dial-up connection.
All these companies need to stop lying, stop using the term AI, because that's literally a straight out lie.
I haven't seen a single thing that demonstrates even the smallest bit of intelligence or thought process.
It's just a chat bot with plug-ins.
It's a large collection of scripts and algorithms, stuck together with a fraudulent sticker saying "Artificial intelligence".
It's marketing hype and nothing more.
I suggest they fix their problems with it and maybe the programmers first need to go back to school and figure out the basics, like English & Maths.
Once they've done that, come back and teach the chat bot how to use them correctly.
I've got so very many examples that my head hurts.
It's still an impressive chat bot, but it's only that. 🤗

We all knew they’d give up after drilling up for a few kilometres and Vyrkind would be content that nothing lay above our heads up Rime’s endless ice, that reality was only so big and that we had explored almost everything that exists besides for some patches within the dark deeps.
I admit, I didn’t have much passion for my career of choice. I’d likely end up as a system admin somewhere, managing networks and improving what we already had, never creating anything new because we already built everything we needed.Born too late to explore the world…

I got a degree in physics and with my computer simulations I managed to not only chart the movement of celestial bodies, but predict their movements as surely as the currents. I was still as passionate about Space as the day I started, because it was the first time we realised what a day was. Castle Yarshu was absolutely filled with people, busier than I’ve ever seen it before. Normally it’s just a museum, filled with old relics from the time of the last Forge Lords. Technically it’s owned by the Ka’lai Militia though and their leader has made sure to keep it well renovated. It is that very leader, General Taraksus, that has invited us all to the Castle’s massive Roundhall, filled with trophies and spoils of conquests that exist only in memory.The hall’s centre stage was covered in posts, perches and seats for the over one hundred representatives the General had invited, with boxy camera drones jetting here and there to capture the discussion for all to see.Around the hall Vyr crowded and swarmed to get a look at us, even clinging to the pillars and ceiling to see the “action”. The castle and our meeting was open to the public after all, and anyone could enter as long as occupancy allowed and they brought nothing dangerous with them besides their claws and fangs.
From my perch I spy Taraksus sitting atop the old Forge Lord’s throne, on its headrest to be precise, discussing something with a fellow general curled up on the armrest and an aide lying at the foot. The seat itself was filled with a sponge-stuffed dummy dressed to fit any monarch, albeit with a sign around its neck with a slur word written on it in a language few speak anymore.
Taraksus themself wasn’t too impressive a sight, well below the size average for females and decently above it for males. Their only ornamentation was a black stripe painted over his head to create a striking contrast as it went over their eyes, and a chain which held a few dozen metal strips, each with the name of a fallen comrade written on it. Or so I hear.
Taraksus ends his conversation and takes up a spear from a guard, the rear of which he uses to stamp the ground.
“Pipe down you lot! I’m calling this meeting to order!” Their voice pierced through the cacophony with a clarity that surprised me.
“As ridiculous as it feels to say, we’ve been contacted by aliens. You all saw the translation broadcasted live from our friends over at the VEI. Suffice to say the contents of their message to us is… concerning. I’ve already forwarded recommendations to our R&D sectors to start working on designs for military spacecraft. Certainly not something I or most anyone else here thought or hoped would ever be needed. I’m hoping that the consensus we reach here will keep that true. Before any of that however I call upon one of the most prominent members of the aforementioned VEI, Elder Slira, to clue us in on the nature of what we face and go over her team’s conclusions.”
I quickly check the notes on my portable computer which my assistant Neeran had so kindly organised for me before erecting myself on my perch.
I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, coupled with the near oppressive silence. I took a steady breath, trying to gather my courage. “You can do it Slira!” echoed a voice from the back of the hall. The chuckles that followed was evidence enough that I hadn’t imagined it, and I felt some of my fears dissipate.
“Greetings, vyr from across the world. I’ll jump right to the meat of the issue and start with an analysis of the ‘Sivkit’ that spoke to us. One of the most startling discoveries we uncovered in our investigation was the incredibly high possibility of them breathing… gas.”
I spotted the ears of more than a few vyr shoot up in shock, including those of the stout administrator of the Vrental Commune’s heartlands, Ireni.
“Gasbreathers? Surely such a thing is not possible?”
“The footage clearly indicates a lack of liquid, and the sivkit’s chest is clearly contracting and expanding in a manner that indicates breathing. We could be wrong, but likely we are looking at an organism that defies our current understanding of how complex life can develop.”
I typed away at my computer, bringing up my second point.
“Next we have their next statement, something about us being Arxur…”
A delegate I do not recognise raises a claw.
“Do we know who these Arxur are? The Sivkit seemed ready to bolt at the idea of them.”
“We currently have no information on the Arxur. All we can extrapolate is that they are another sapient alien species, that we resemble them somewhat except for our eyes and that they represent a clear threat to the Sivkit. Also, for whatever reason, the sivkit mistook us for a prey species because our eyes are on the side of our heads…”

“That’s… no, I don't have a way to soften that, that’s stupid as shit.”
“It’s… not scientifically correct, no. But it made them mistake us for fellow kindred among the stars, their captain even going so far to gift us translator technology.”
“Was it a mistake?” Taraksus asks, seemingly in thought. “I mean clearly they mistook us for something we are not, but is it impossible for us to be kindred?”
I understood his question, and sadly had no real answer.
“I don’t know General. The kind of friendship you describe is a two-way street, and if they are not willing then there is nothing we can do. But that does not mean we can’t do anything about it. Diplomat Zhara, your turn.”
A vyr across the stage from me straightens herself. Her body is wrapped in colourful fabrics and her various bits of jewellery show a clear love of ornamentation and precious stones.
“Thank you Elder. The Sivkit Captain promised to return at a time less than [3 weeks] away. Irrelevant of any bigger picture, he seems to care mostly about establishing relations with us and getting access to the deposits on our planetary neighbour Turqo. Whether for personal wealth or aiding his kin, who’s to say. He seems to assume we are part of a larger civilisation, likely unable to sense us underneath all the ice and mistaking our surface city for some kind of local outpost. Whatever the case may be, our diplomatic strategy is simple: lie through our fangs and trade metal.”
An uneasy murmur fills the hall.
“I know, lying may come back to bite us. But we need to be cautious, we know nothing about these aliens and if pretending to be a larger civilisation of peaceful herbivores will put them at ease then so be it. In addition my friends in the industrial sector tell me we don’t have any need for such a vast amount of heavy metals, so mining the deposit and trading the resources to the Sivkit for what they have in abundance seems good business. It will also help further the ‘small mining outpost’ facade and aid us in getting more information about who these ‘meat-eating humans’ are.”
“Excellent! We’re right on time!”
A gasp passes through the crowd. My eyes dart around and my ears swivel every which way, trying to identify the source of the shout. The crowd of onlookers to my left were making way, clearly shocked at… some new arrivals? What under Rime…?
Two vyr had entered the hall.
The first was a small male, their body wiry and covered in scars. Even the tip of their flat tale had a V-shaped chunk cut out of it. A sash of black cloth covered in white pictograms was wrapped around his chest, and attached to the sash was a broad, bladed weapon almost comically large for him. The second was a rather average female, still almost twice the size of the male. Black robes and a hood hid her form, though I noticed a pair of silver reading glasses sitting on her snout and a… by Glow, was that a fucking tome? An actual book, with thick kelp-fibre pages and bound in Nesis bark.
My brain almost refused to recognise the two, but finally sense overruled logic. The male was Krattron, and the female was Kahltrak. The highest authorities of the Second and Third Churches of the Abyss respectively.
Krattron swam up to the stage, eyes brimming with what I could only describe as maniacal glee.
“Greetings, children of Vyrkind! When do we set out to hunt the demons of Void?”
Kahltrak follows shortly behind. I would have been able to hear her sigh from the surface.
“Hello delegates. We’ve come to pledge our aid, and to discuss how we shall be dealing with our enemies.”

I'm planning to do ROTC and want to be a Space Operations Officer and make a career out of the military where I hopefully can be a general someday and do strategy stuff. I want to pick an engineering degree so I can understand the technology inside the spacecraft for when I'm working with engineers on what type of upgrades to make. Would aerospace engineering or computer engineering be the way to go you think? I'm fascinated by both... from a hobby perspective I like gaming PC hardware, but from a military standpoint I think the future of aerospace with full blown spaceships is badass and I'd love to understand the propulsion systems that get us there. So basically I need some help deciding...

Clutching their cookie boxes eagerly, the girls fell into line behind the extraterrestrials. They followed them up a floating gangway into the belly of the ship.
Inside, the walls glowed with an otherworldly luminescence. Strange symbols and interfaces winked all around, totally indecipherable. The floors felt bouncy underfoot, as if made of gelatin.
"Wow," breathed Jamie. "It's so beautiful in here."
The aliens guided them through sleek corridors and compartments full of glowing tech. They pointed out living quarters, a laboratory, hydroponic gardens, and an observation deck showing the curve of the Earth.
In the cockpit, countless viewscreens displayed alien constellations and scans of their small town below. Control panels rippled like liquid mercury beneath touch.
"This is where we navigated our journey to your solar system," explained their guides. "Truly a marvel, the distances stars can be bridged.
Tammy peered out the main viewing portal. "Your ship is so fast! How did you get here from wherever you came from?"
As the explorers launched into an explanation involving hyperdrives and folded spacetime, Jenna began to lose the thread. Space travel clearly worked very differently where these beings hailed from.
Their tour lasted nearly an hour, the aliens answering every barrage of questions patiently. All too soon, it was over, and they found themselves back outside in the late afternoon sun
"Thank you so much for the amazing tour!" Jenna gushed, hugging her now-empty cookie box. "Learning about aliens is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The tallest being dipped its head graciously. "IT WAS OUR PLEASURE, SMALL HUMANS. YOU HAVE PROVIDED US AN INSIGHT INTO YOUR YOUNG ONES AS WELL."
Its fellows chattered in their musical language, some holding half-eaten cookies and gesturing appreciatively. Jenna beamed, glad they seemed to have enjoyed the treats.
"Will you come back to see us again?" asked Jamie hopefully.
"PERHAPS, IF OUR EXPLORATIONS BRING US BACK THIS WAY," was the reply. "BUT FOR NOW, WE MUST RESUME OUR JOURNEY AMONG THE STARS. FAREWELL, AND THANK YOU ONCE MORE FOR YOUR HOSPITALITY.
The aliens turned as one and glided back up the gangway. The rockets flared, rising gracefully into the sky until they vanished into the dusk.
The girls stood watching long after, buzzing with excited chatter about this unforgettable day. In the end, it had been the best cookie sale ever. Maybe even worth breaking a few rules...

Real spacecraft generate tons of heat - power generators, engines, and weapons (not real yet obviously) are the biggest culprits. Managing that heat could create an interesting dynamic to combat, but I'm not familiar enough with the mechanics to create that kind of subsystem.
As far as I can tell, these would be the basics for making a system as simply as possible:

• Thermal Points - This is arguably the hardest part to design, but specific actions in combat would generate an amount of Thermal Points (I'd say Heat Points, but that abbreviates to HP, which is just confusing). The tough part is that Traveller doesn't automatically have this sort of mechanic. Stars Without Number has Command Points, and they can be repurposed relatively easily. I'd be very curious about your thoughts here.
• TP Thresholds - At certain thresholds, TP would cause detrimental effects to the ship - maybe the same amount of damage and effects as a critical hit.
• TP Reduction - A new kind of ship component would be needed - radiators, for disposing heat. At the end of every round, a ship's TP would be reduced by their radiator rating. Damaging and destroying the enemy's radiators would reduce their capacity to manage heat, making it dangerous for them to act.
  • Note: As it stands, adding a whole new type of component and making it take up the same space as other component would wreck every preexisting spaceship design. It might instead be better to have ships automatically come with a certain radiator rating based on their hull type, with options to add additional radiators.

This is my first post here. I’m planning to write a few stories set in a “Star Trek” type universe.
The propulsion system I’m thinking of using for my spacecraft is that the spacecraft generates a forward facing “laser” beam the targets an object (say, a planet, an asteroid, even another man made object like a “warp point” (a large object built for the purpose of having a large enough object to lock onto)
The laser (which could create a concentrated magnified flow of gravity) would then “pull” the spacecraft towards the object using some type of, for lack of a better word, “gravity rope”. Almost like reeling in a fishing rod. Would this be theoretically plausible or would the forces involved move the object that the spacecraft locked onto as well (even if it was larger than the spacecraft)
