i’m not a wise woman of many years just yet. i consider my youth current and apparent, with an overwhelming sense that there is still very much left to learn. i was never one to fear self reflection. i take pride in owning this ability. suffice to say, i am not entirely free from fear.
i fear that, at times, i succumb to the conditionings of society, primarily plaguing my generation. in an elevator, i notice my fingers itching for my pocket. i must check facebook instead of saying hello. and while i would genuinely like to consider myself an extrovert, i do recognize these desensitized behaviors.
we live in a place of instant gratification. i notice it in my impatience. i notice it when the wifi crashes at home. i see it in relationships. where, an intense craving of acceptance and excess take precedent over solitude and means. i know i type cynically. my thoughts almost always expresses itself melancholy. i recognize this may be just a tampering of my subconscious, resurfacing itself in a healthier way than being the pooper at the party. or maybe that’s what i tell myself? who knows, it makes sense to me.
i used to say i didn’t care about what other people thought of me, while subtly and secretly caring what they thought of me. particularly, here…when i’m most vulnerable. i sense that a lot of us fear this vulnerability. probably because of the traumas of life. it hurts to hurt, so we stand guarded instead of opening up. thus, creating a sense of numbness.
people talk about dreams and personal fulfilling aspirations. about chasing them. about following your calling. answering that phone and making the most of that opportunity. i find it difficult to breath the air found inside that mould.
i do not profess to ever suggest that a person shouldn’t follow the path they feels best. and if your phone is ringing, answer that shit. unless you don’t feel like answering, then don’t. it is not my position to make your decisions. we all have our own, but mine is just a little bit different. i don’t envision myself as an entrepreneur making millions. or a superstar on stage. i find my passion in these words.
i haven’t found my dream yet. or my calling. my phone’s rang a few times, i answered. the conversations were confusing then. but they’re clear now. i very much enjoy the labyrinth of life. how connected everything is blows my mind, even though realistically we are all so very small.
i don’t know about y'all, but it seems to me these times are filled with chaos. we stand divided politically, socially, emotionally, cognitively, and any other word that ends in “ly.” it is only to our detriment. we’ve become afraid to feel. because fear has finally consumed. no longer are we caring for our neighbors. no longer do we have these capabilities? i’d be poised to suggest not. the tide always turns, and rarely does it reverse.
i find it hard to find a dream when there’s so much suffering in the world. i guess my dream could be for that to end. perhaps all it takes is a little more awareness that we are, still very much, indeed…human, with thoughts, concerns, feelings, and emotions. that I am very much like you…with thoughts, concerns, feelings, and emotions.
i am not speaking on this nature as a “soft millenial.” or whatever you want to call it. nor do i fear being viewed in such a light. truly. i speak on this nature as a humanitarian. as a person who’s genuinely concerned for our species firstly, and concerned about his role in this species secondly. i fear many things. but i do not fear expression. and neither should you.

i think we’ve been so concerned with ourselves, that we’ve forgotten our greatest abilities come from morality, and trusting one another. we’ve become so desensitized that a genuine connection with another individual is almost considered blasphemous. we’ve been convinced that this dog eat dog world has no room for vulnerability, and we’ve become cold and ignorant because of it.

We'd probably been friends for about five months. The genre we rp in is very small and good roleplay buddies are hard to find. On our first discord server, our characters clicked immediately. The progression of their attraction and relationship felt perfect, but I guess I should have seen the signs even then. Another character had a crush on mine, which he was unaware of and they traveled together because of work, so he ended up casually posting about the trip on social media. Nothing happened with the crush and I remember thinking, if it does, it'll happen IC and they'll have a little conflict. It didn't happen IC. Instead, it happened OOC in the form of my friend freaking out about it happening, like my character had no life outside of being with hers. Even then, I really liked her as a friend and we discussed it and moved on.
We started a server together. We continued to work well together even in the set up/planning stages. This time, she asked me to play one half of her favorite ship. I was fine with it because I not only liked the potential ship, but I had ideas for what I could do with this character. From the beginning, these two characters had a history. They had a fling, but he character ghosted mine and they hadn't talked sense. I remember thinking, "My character will be upset and distant obviously." That was not what she wanted. My character still had to be 100 percent into hers, and I didn't let it happen. We were all writing with other people on the server. Her character was flirting and hooking up, so I made the misstep of thinking my character could do the same. No. Anytime it seemed like he'd made a connection with someone else, she'd message me something passive aggressive in private: "Oh, I guess no our ship, huh?", "Looks like your character is having fun", "He's interacting with everyone except my character."
And because this was in private, no one else on the server knew. She talked more to them ooc/in dms than I did, so when our conflict bubbled over, I was sure that she spun a narrative that I was the cause of it. Her character clicked with another character and they decided to make it an endship. GREAT. So now my character is free to develop relationships, right? Wrong. Her character was still supposed to be the one he paid more attention to, in a very unrealistic sense. Ooc, I'm like, "You have a set ship now. What sense does it make to have your character flirt around and build something with someone else when there's no future there?" I was confused. Still, I tried to be accommodating. She constantly sent pictures and videos of the Pairing between our characters in the admin chat. Mind you, I like all pairings and all characters. This was not my OTP. It was hers. Because I was not as enthusiastic about it or giving her what she wanted, she accused me of making her hate her favorite pairing. I felt bad, constantly like I was doing something wrong. I made two separate rp threads with her in the admin chat so that she could have her ship how she wanted. If course, she changed many aspects of it, but fine. This was my friend and I wanted her to be happy.
There was no making her happy though. Outside of our private threads, the plot was still continuing on the server. I had multiple threads with different people, including her, but she snapped at me privately again because I wasn't responding to hers fast enough. I didn't make her and our thread a priority. She closed that thread so that we couldn't finish it. Another time, I was replying to all of my threads and I fell asleep. The next morning, I logged on and she said I'd purposely responded to everyone except her. I just started to become very unhappy on the server because I didn't know when the next conflict would come about, and whenever it did, she would spin it like I was jealous. I was upset that the ship wasn't what I wanted it to be and I was jealous that she/her character had an endship with someone else. I never said those things.
So after another argument between us, she became passive aggressive again. She only commented short answers to what I said in private, but carried on like all was fine in public until I'd finally had enough. She'd told the others some untrue things about me and no matter what I said to clear it up, their minds seemed made up that I was the source of the conflict. I told her I wanted to end our friendship, that I regretted taking the character she asked me to take, and that I didn't want to write or admin with her again. After that, I left the server, and blocked her access to me. I don't feel like I owe her an apology for it, especially when I have no intention of speaking to her again after she turned out to be so vile and manipulative. Part of me is like, if the others stick around, they'll see what I saw, too. Sorry for the chunk of text. I needed to get that off of my chest. :/

I suppose a summary is in order for things to be clear. Humanity has a bit of a reputation as an odd lot in the galaxy. Most aliens don’t know really know what to think about us. You see, most aliens are actually somewhat boring, having fallen into galactic societal niches over thousands of years. The Atroxians are were space pirates, the Vontacruz own the casinos and travel cruise industries, and the Hordun operate the most efficient morgues this side of the galaxy – usually because of the Atroxians. But the Delridians? They are diplomats. And dare I say that they are the weird ones.
Delri Prima is the homeworld of the Delridians, a tall, lanky race who look like the grimdark cousins of a Star Wars Kaminoan. Brilliant medics, they apparently don’t see a difference between medical work and diplomacy, seeing both fields as the healing arts. Their medicocracy has a long list of accomplishments throughout the galaxy, enough that it’d look like an 18-hour credit reel on a movie. My guess is that they may have been the “Humans” of the galaxy preceding us before they finally settled, and rumors have it that the K’kituun Death Puppets are an ancient offshoot from their early days on the galactic stage.
But more to the point, after about 180 years on the galactic stage, Humanity has made a decent name for ourselves as the handyman and eccentric nerd. We are celebrated, thrown strange looks, worried glances, and altogether treated as small children. Though with the destruction of Axtroxia, they may want to worry about what will happen when we hit puberty. The Delridians have already been through that, though they were never as eccentric as we are.
They reached out to Humanity with a diplomatic frigate appropriately named Olive Branch about a year ago. I’ve learned they like to reflect the cultures they are talking to, so as to ease negotiations. Can’t imagine what the Atroxian equivalent was. Probably something like ‘Torn Heads’. Regardless, Diplomat Weathers was finally selected as the Earth delegate to talk on Delri Prima, and oh boy. That is a dark world. Like, bring a flashlight dark. I don’t know whether it is the slow spin of the planet, or the climate generators they have, but the entire twilight band is just dark and grey. It rains, and thankfully it is safe water, but it is eerie. From the embassy city they built to make us more comfortable, you can look out across the Delridian jungle and see the many other diplomatic cities slowly being devoured by the vines and trees.
The first night was fine, though I’m not sure any of us slept well. We were each provided a separate room or, well, house really. The entire city was made of a cold stone, themed after some old Italian city on Earth. The wind slipped through the narrow streets with a soft whistle, bringing with it a faint jungle fog. Somewhere down the street was a clattering window shutter, but with how much stone they used, and the strange alignment of the streets, you could hear a pin drop from eight blocks away!
Talks went well for the first three days as Diplomat Weathers and the Delridians got to know each other. I met with and discussed a number of cultural similarities with a member of the alien entourage, a Nurse Kelayo, when I wasn’t with the others in my group exploring the city. She was very proud of the settlement they built for us, but in our talks, she asked what we thought of the book. What book?
Well, after having a wonderful meal with my coworkers and some of the alien entourage, we said our farewells and parted ways. Kelayo was vague, but had explained how they had acquired a copy of the book, and that she hoped that we enjoyed the effort she put into it.
I didn’t look into it immediately when I returned to the lonely, lifeless house that was my quarters. Mark was my closest neighbor, and he was a block down. The Delridians, fresh from talks with the Hordun, thought we may want some privacy from each other. And while it is nice not having to hear Mark snore in the cabin like on the flight here, the house was a little… too private.
It was as I was preparing to turn off the light to go to sleep that I thought to look in the nightstand beside me. Kelayo had told us about the book, and when I opened the top drawer, it was indeed there. Sitting center and alone was an old Earth book of gnarled leather and no visible title. Whatever poor creature the Delridians had used to make the cover had terrible skin!
Opening the book, I found it to have been printed in an old dialect of English from before the Third World War, with some much older words I did not recognize. It certainly looked like it was printed in the archaic methods of old Earth, with wet ink instead of modern digital ink that provided touch-based pseudo-memoric context.
I began to flip through the pages of this strange book, turning up the brightness on the nightstand lamp to see better. The faded pages of the book looked sick and moldy, and my skin crawled just touching it, but the letters, despite the stains and grunge, seemed to pop from the page in crisp black. In fact, the ink was so black that it felt like I was staring into the void with each letter. Kelayo’s book was some archaic text of old Earth culture from the end of the 20th century, though I did not recognize the name. Written by a Bishop Simon from some archaic cult or religion, the book functioned as a “spellbook” like a deepdive virtual reality fantasy game might have. It was filled with a plethora of gods I did not recognize, and a ton of phonetic gibberish that sounded good when said, but easily complicated.
I hadn’t gotten too far when I heard a man’s scream next to me. Jumping out of my skin, I found no one there. But I remembered where I was, and crept to the window. It was Mark’s voice, more panicky than I had ever heard him. Peeking through the slats of the window, I scanned the street towards Mark’s place. The light was on, and someone was shuffling down the street, murmuring in pain.
Rushing down to the street, I rushed out to help him. Mark’s mutterings were too quiet, and he was holding something to his chest. It may have been a minute before I collected myself and tried to get answers from him, but you have to understand, I’ve never seen a dying man before. Not in real life. In the dim and permanent gloom, I could barely make out the trail of blood behind him. He pleaded again and again, and I had to find out where he was injured, and what it was he was carrying.
I went to take what he held, only to realized that in my own fervor to aid him I still had that creepy book. I put that down to wrench free Mark’s own possession. I really wish I hadn’t, for his grip was weak, with only one hand. I held his other, and everything above it.
My own voice was the next I heard echoing down the street as I most certainly fell backwards. Sorry Mark, but I lost your arm. Well, your first one. The second is decorating some chandelier somewhere, courtesy of Vanessa.
Please understand that for anyone in my situation, gorey horror was never my fancy, and I hope no one in the auditing board holds it against me. I would bet credits that any of you would have done much the same as I did.
Time is… unreliable on Delri Prima, with its twilit band and gloom. The only thing that moves is that blasted fog. And the vines. Especially the vines. I’m not sure how long I ran, but Vanessa was the one to find me, flanked by a street littered with Human bodies. Far more people than joined us on the crew… I think. You might want to review the ship manifest just to be sure.
Vanessa, once she verified my identity, guided me through the littered street, still gurgling and reaching out to us. Give her a raise, by the way. She’s the one that got us out of there. We met up with Dwayne and Harry, both armed with metal pipes and whatever other junk they salvaged, and we retreated to a boarded up house with other surviving members of the crew. They were glad to see me, though I don’t remember who they were. Many were new faces to the ship for this mission.
We settled here for hours? A day? Our comms were filled with static, and we couldn’t reach Mr. Weathers to see if he was ok. We needed to get off this planet. Someone mentioned that the ship was still parked at the landing bay. All eyes turned to someone in the back of the group, who slowly stood up, her form long and lanky. Kelayo, the Delridian nurse.
Vanessa worked with Kelayo on a plan to move through the city to the landing bay, while the rest of us sought supplies. This house had a basement, connected to a series of tunnels which we would use to slip under whatever muttering, mumbling horrors pleaded us to come outside.
Slowly, and as quietly as we could, our train of survivors crept through the tunnels. Our flashlights that Ben had found were pathetically dim, and frequently flickered out, sounding with a loud clunk whenever someone whacked it awake. Icy water dripped from the long tangled hairs of wriggling moss that clung to and between the bricks, the lights illuminating white lice-like that lived within the tangle.
Splashing was the only sound we heard for a long time, along with someone’s horrid cough. He was in the back of the line, far behind me, but kept coughing and groaning. Others frequently shushed him, louder than he coughed. But for all the good their efforts to keep him quiet were, it paled in comparison to Kelayo’s odd excitement. When I inquired her about her unusual positivity, she admitted fascination over the many accounts of average Humans combatting the supernatural evils that threatened Earth. How we could survive on a planet infested with the dead with only equally dark magicks astounded her, despite our culture not having widespread knowledge or application of this means of survival. It was faint, but she had nodded at the book. Why did I still have this disgusting leatherback that seemed to shiver in the cold?
I apologize for any impact I may have had on diplomatic relations with the Delridians, but I said some uncouth remarks about the whole situation and the book. I flipped it open to a random page to give an example, forgetting in my annoyance just how dark it was in the tunnels. But that ink… that horrid archaic stain… was fully legible. I admit I came to a stop in awe, though shortlived as the train of people behind me bumped into me. That coughing was gone.
So were half the people we had been travelling with. Kelayo glanced around with a chitter. She was having too much fun with the spooky, and now we heard skittering and scrape scrape scraping on the bricks. Vanessa fired a shot down the tunnel and urged us to run, so we did.
We were near the landing bay when we ducked into a sideroom per Kelayo’s prompting, and shoved a convenient table in the way of the door. The skittering was above us on the ground floor too, and then someone grabbed my foot. It may have been Mark. Well, the part of Mark I dropped.
Long gnarled fingers covered in dirt were the hallmark of these freaky things. Human hands with a life of their own, skittering around like bugs as they fled the flashlight’s beam and sought dark corners. These shelters included their unholy wriggling up our pants and jackets, some grips strong and muscular, and others gentle and cautious. If you have ever had a massage, you may never want one again once a chilly, slimy, dismembered hand tries to nest between your shoulder blades.
Vanessa fired off a few shots in her desperate attempt to keep the grabby hands off, though she nicked Ben’s ear in the process. The loud noise scattered the skitterhands enough for us to fling the last few from our persons. Vanessa slammed the book I still carried, ordering me to read it. She had lost her copy early on, but had the gist of its contents.
The ink on the book was darkest on one particular page, with a weird symbol that looked like it said XOOD. An old-Earth linguist may understand it better than I. Kelayo was forced to provide guidance, as she was the expert on the book, and with many, many attempts, and a dark horde gathering upstairs, were ready to begin. Vanessa was out of shots in her gun, and Ben and Dwayne were futiley pushing back the horde of impossible crewmen. These people smelled horribly of rotten meat, and overtook Ben first, followed swiftly by Dwayne.
Vanessa had backed into a corner, clearly scared. I can’t blame her, since I was, too. But I couldn’t move, couldn’t join her in the false safety of the corner. The rotten crew… this dead crew, was in the room with us, and were already grabbing me. Amidst the noise and confusion, I could hear Vanessa being attacked behind me, and the dull nails of my own assailants tearing at my skin. Kelayo, her form thin and dark, simply stood amidst the dead.
Read it, she said.
Say it with all your heart.
I remember the word that pierced the world that day, but can’t remember saying it. But my throat burns whenever I utter it now. BARASHAKUSHU. The dead froze in place, their fingers dug deep into my skin. BARASHAKUSHU. Limp, lifeless, just as they should be. BARASHAKUSHU. The haze in the air, even in the basement, lifted. BARASHAKUSHU. Vanessa breathed deep as I pulled her from the bodies and out the house to the crowded, lifeless street.
We limped, though we did not bleed, filled with holes and grime, and caked in blood. Kelayo followed wraithlike behind us, always ten paces behind. The landing bay was before us. Our ship and salvation was before us.
Diplomat Weathers was fine, though alarmed at our state. Delridian doctors tended to us as we explained what happened. A full transcript is available via the ship’s DIA-Log.
When all was said and done, the Delridian diplomat thanked us for being so willing to open discourse. To celebrate successful talks between our species, he offered us a parting feast. He motioned Kaleyo over, who had apparently been tasked with researching Human culture for the talks.
She explained over dinner about how she had poured over a stunning variety of Human dishes from our many cultures, but that she had settled on one that appeared to be a universal favorite. An Italian dish of long, stringy noodles over their equivalent of a white cream sauce. And dinner was fantastic! But Kaleyo seemed confused as well, stating that she had a difficult time picking out the right recipe. The instructions were apparently all over the place with a lot of strange steps that seemed superfluous to food preparation.
I asked her what she meant, to which she replied, “The base ingredients were simple, almost mundane. Of note, the various rituals in the preparation exhausted many of our best doctors. Some are still seeking treatment after one batch escaped. You Humans have a very strange culture of food, especially with the names. I believe you called this one… creepy pasta?”

Delri Prima is the homeworld of the Delridians, a tall, lanky race who look like the grimdark cousins of a Star Wars Kaminoan. Brilliant medics, they apparently don’t see a difference between medical work and diplomacy, seeing both fields as the healing arts. Their medicocracy has a long list of accomplishments throughout the galaxy, enough that it’d look like an 18-hour credit reel on a movie. My guess is that they may have been the “Humans” of the galaxy preceding us before they finally settled, and rumors have it that the K’kituun Death Puppets are an ancient offshoot from their early days on the galactic stage.
But more to the point, after about 180 years on the galactic stage, Humanity has made a decent name for ourselves as the handyman and eccentric nerd. We are celebrated, thrown strange looks, worried glances, and altogether treated as small children. Though with the destruction of Axtroxia, they may want to worry about what will happen when we hit puberty. The Delridians have already been through that, though they were never as eccentric as we are.
They reached out to Humanity with a diplomatic frigate appropriately named Olive Branch about a year ago. I’ve learned they like to reflect the cultures they are talking to, so as to ease negotiations. Can’t imagine what the Atroxian equivalent was. Probably something like ‘Torn Heads’. Regardless, Diplomat Weathers was finally selected as the Earth delegate to talk on Delri Prima, and oh boy. That is a dark world. Like, bring a flashlight dark. I don’t know whether it is the slow spin of the planet, or the climate generators they have, but the entire twilight band is just dark and grey. It rains, and thankfully it is safe water, but it is eerie. From the embassy city they built to make us more comfortable, you can look out across the Delridian jungle and see the many other diplomatic cities slowly being devoured by the vines and trees.
The first night was fine, though I’m not sure any of us slept well. We were each provided a separate room or, well, house really. The entire city was made of a cold stone, themed after some old Italian city on Earth. The wind slipped through the narrow streets with a soft whistle, bringing with it a faint jungle fog. Somewhere down the street was a clattering window shutter, but with how much stone they used, and the strange alignment of the streets, you could hear a pin drop from eight blocks away!
Talks went well for the first three days as Diplomat Weathers and the Delridians got to know each other. I met with and discussed a number of cultural similarities with a member of the alien entourage, a Nurse Kelayo, when I wasn’t with the others in my group exploring the city. She was very proud of the settlement they built for us, but in our talks, she asked what we thought of the book. What book?
Well, after having a wonderful meal with my coworkers and some of the alien entourage, we said our farewells and parted ways. Kelayo was vague, but had explained how they had acquired a copy of the book, and that she hoped that we enjoyed the effort she put into it.
I didn’t look into it immediately when I returned to the lonely, lifeless house that was my quarters. Mark was my closest neighbor, and he was a block down. The Delridians, fresh from talks with the Hordun, thought we may want some privacy from each other. And while it is nice not having to hear Mark snore in the cabin like on the flight here, the house was a little… too private.
It was as I was preparing to turn off the light to go to sleep that I thought to look in the nightstand beside me. Kelayo had told us about the book, and when I opened the top drawer, it was indeed there. Sitting center and alone was an old Earth book of gnarled leather and no visible title. Whatever poor creature the Delridians had used to make the cover had terrible skin!
Opening the book, I found it to have been printed in an old dialect of English from before the Third World War, with some much older words I did not recognize. It certainly looked like it was printed in the archaic methods of old Earth, with wet ink instead of modern digital ink that provided touch-based pseudo-memoric context.
I began to flip through the pages of this strange book, turning up the brightness on the nightstand lamp to see better. The faded pages of the book looked sick and moldy, and my skin crawled just touching it, but the letters, despite the stains and grunge, seemed to pop from the page in crisp black. In fact, the ink was so black that it felt like I was staring into the void with each letter. Kelayo’s book was some archaic text of old Earth culture from the end of the 20th century, though I did not recognize the name. Written by a Bishop Simon from some archaic cult or religion, the book functioned as a “spellbook” like a deepdive virtual reality fantasy game might have. It was filled with a plethora of gods I did not recognize, and a ton of phonetic gibberish that sounded good when said, but easily complicated.
I hadn’t gotten too far when I heard a man’s scream next to me. Jumping out of my skin, I found no one there. But I remembered where I was, and crept to the window. It was Mark’s voice, more panicky than I had ever heard him. Peeking through the slats of the window, I scanned the street towards Mark’s place. The light was on, and someone was shuffling down the street, murmuring in pain.
Rushing down to the street, I rushed out to help him. Mark’s mutterings were too quiet, and he was holding something to his chest. It may have been a minute before I collected myself and tried to get answers from him, but you have to understand, I’ve never seen a dying man before. Not in real life. In the dim and permanent gloom, I could barely make out the trail of blood behind him. He pleaded again and again, and I had to find out where he was injured, and what it was he was carrying.
I went to take what he held, only to realized that in my own fervor to aid him I still had that creepy book. I put that down to wrench free Mark’s own possession. I really wish I hadn’t, for his grip was weak, with only one hand. I held his other, and everything above it.
My own voice was the next I heard echoing down the street as I most certainly fell backwards. Sorry Mark, but I lost your arm. Well, your first one. The second is decorating some chandelier somewhere, courtesy of Vanessa.
Please understand that for anyone in my situation, gorey horror was never my fancy, and I hope no one in the auditing board holds it against me. I would bet credits that any of you would have done much the same as I did.
Time is… unreliable on Delri Prima, with its twilit band and gloom. The only thing that moves is that blasted fog. And the vines. Especially the vines. I’m not sure how long I ran, but Vanessa was the one to find me, flanked by a street littered with Human bodies. Far more people than joined us on the crew… I think. You might want to review the ship manifest just to be sure.
Vanessa, once she verified my identity, guided me through the littered street, still gurgling and reaching out to us. Give her a raise, by the way. She’s the one that got us out of there. We met up with Dwayne and Harry, both armed with metal pipes and whatever other junk they salvaged, and we retreated to a boarded up house with other surviving members of the crew. They were glad to see me, though I don’t remember who they were. Many were new faces to the ship for this mission.
We settled here for hours? A day? Our comms were filled with static, and we couldn’t reach Mr. Weathers to see if he was ok. We needed to get off this planet. Someone mentioned that the ship was still parked at the landing bay. All eyes turned to someone in the back of the group, who slowly stood up, her form long and lanky. Kelayo, the Delridian nurse.
Vanessa worked with Kelayo on a plan to move through the city to the landing bay, while the rest of us sought supplies. This house had a basement, connected to a series of tunnels which we would use to slip under whatever muttering, mumbling horrors pleaded us to come outside.
Slowly, and as quietly as we could, our train of survivors crept through the tunnels. Our flashlights that Ben had found were pathetically dim, and frequently flickered out, sounding with a loud clunk whenever someone whacked it awake. Icy water dripped from the long tangled hairs of wriggling moss that clung to and between the bricks, the lights illuminating white lice-like that lived within the tangle.
Splashing was the only sound we heard for a long time, along with someone’s horrid cough. He was in the back of the line, far behind me, but kept coughing and groaning. Others frequently shushed him, louder than he coughed. But for all the good their efforts to keep him quiet were, it paled in comparison to Kelayo’s odd excitement. When I inquired her about her unusual positivity, she admitted fascination over the many accounts of average Humans combatting the supernatural evils that threatened Earth. How we could survive on a planet infested with the dead with only equally dark magicks astounded her, despite our culture not having widespread knowledge or application of this means of survival. It was faint, but she had nodded at the book. Why did I still have this disgusting leatherback that seemed to shiver in the cold?
I apologize for any impact I may have had on diplomatic relations with the Delridians, but I said some uncouth remarks about the whole situation and the book. I flipped it open to a random page to give an example, forgetting in my annoyance just how dark it was in the tunnels. But that ink… that horrid archaic stain… was fully legible. I admit I came to a stop in awe, though shortlived as the train of people behind me bumped into me. That coughing was gone.
So were half the people we had been travelling with. Kelayo glanced around with a chitter. She was having too much fun with the spooky, and now we heard skittering and scrape scrape scraping on the bricks. Vanessa fired a shot down the tunnel and urged us to run, so we did.
We were near the landing bay when we ducked into a sideroom per Kelayo’s prompting, and shoved a convenient table in the way of the door. The skittering was above us on the ground floor too, and then someone grabbed my foot. It may have been Mark. Well, the part of Mark I dropped.
Long gnarled fingers covered in dirt were the hallmark of these freaky things. Human hands with a life of their own, skittering around like bugs as they fled the flashlight’s beam and sought dark corners. These shelters included their unholy wriggling up our pants and jackets, some grips strong and muscular, and others gentle and cautious. If you have ever had a massage, you may never want one again once a chilly, slimy, dismembered hand tries to nest between your shoulder blades.
Vanessa fired off a few shots in her desperate attempt to keep the grabby hands off, though she nicked Ben’s ear in the process. The loud noise scattered the skitterhands enough for us to fling the last few from our persons. Vanessa slammed the book I still carried, ordering me to read it. She had lost her copy early on, but had the gist of its contents.
The ink on the book was darkest on one particular page, with a weird symbol that looked like it said XOOD. An old-Earth linguist may understand it better than I. Kelayo was forced to provide guidance, as she was the expert on the book, and with many, many attempts, and a dark horde gathering upstairs, were ready to begin. Vanessa was out of shots in her gun, and Ben and Dwayne were futiley pushing back the horde of impossible crewmen. These people smelled horribly of rotten meat, and overtook Ben first, followed swiftly by Dwayne.
Vanessa had backed into a corner, clearly scared. I can’t blame her, since I was, too. But I couldn’t move, couldn’t join her in the false safety of the corner. The rotten crew… this dead crew, was in the room with us, and were already grabbing me. Amidst the noise and confusion, I could hear Vanessa being attacked behind me, and the dull nails of my own assailants tearing at my skin. Kelayo, her form thin and dark, simply stood amidst the dead.
Read it, she said.
Say it with all your heart.
I remember the word that pierced the world that day, but can’t remember saying it. But my throat burns whenever I utter it now. BARASHAKUSHU. The dead froze in place, their fingers dug deep into my skin. BARASHAKUSHU. Limp, lifeless, just as they should be. BARASHAKUSHU. The haze in the air, even in the basement, lifted. BARASHAKUSHU. Vanessa breathed deep as I pulled her from the bodies and out the house to the crowded, lifeless street.
We limped, though we did not bleed, filled with holes and grime, and caked in blood. Kelayo followed wraithlike behind us, always ten paces behind. The landing bay was before us. Our ship and salvation was before us.
Diplomat Weathers was fine, though alarmed at our state. Delridian doctors tended to us as we explained what happened. A full transcript is available via the ship’s DIA-Log.
When all was said and done, the Delridian diplomat thanked us for being so willing to open discourse. To celebrate successful talks between our species, he offered us a parting feast. He motioned Kaleyo over, who had apparently been tasked with researching Human culture for the talks.
She explained over dinner about how she had poured over a stunning variety of Human dishes from our many cultures, but that she had settled on one that appeared to be a universal favorite. An Italian dish of long, stringy noodles over their equivalent of a white cream sauce. And dinner was fantastic! But Kaleyo seemed confused as well, stating that she had a difficult time picking out the right recipe. The instructions were apparently all over the place with a lot of strange steps that seemed superfluous to food preparation.
I asked her what she meant, to which she replied, “The base ingredients were simple, almost mundane. Of note, the various rituals in the preparation exhausted many of our best doctors. Some are still seeking treatment after one batch escaped. You Humans have a very strange culture of food, especially with the names. I believe you called this one… creepy pasta?”

Hey there,
This [[Saruman, The White Hand]] is the first deck I have put together myself and have been slowly adding and improving it over the last couple of months. The goal of the deck is pretty simple: cast big spells with Saruman on the field and either give the amassed army evasion or fling it for direct damage. [[Chandra's ignition]] or [[Retribution of the Ancients]] has won me a handful of games pretty early on and I feel like its pretty competitive for the group I play with but it just doesn't seem as cohesive as it probably could.
My biggest issue is that the deck has turned into somewhat of a "good stuff" deck without a very strong identity since Saruman only wants noncreature spells to amass and I feel like it has given me too much freedom for my own good. As it currently stands, I think its a half control, half "voltron" deck. I was thinking of leaning more into card-theft (especially when you can cast stolen cards for free) as it would provide a double-amass trigger on the casting of my spell and the free-cast of my opponents' spells.
What do y'all think?

Tell me about the school-wide special events your school does. Who plans and executes them? We do Valentine's Day, Spring Fling, Winter Holidays, Halloween, and then a few others throughout the year. It's usually the assistant director and a couple enthusiastic teachers that plan things. These enthusiastic teachers often stay til late in the evening setting up events. I think they complained that other teachers aren't helping, so now we are being roped in. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to help, but we are not allowed to use overtime and I refuse to work for free.
My director has decided that each teacher needs to choose a holiday/celebration and plan a school-wide event. I plan amazing learning activities for my toddlers. We have class parties for all sorts of reasons. I am so overwhelmed by the idea of having to plan an event for 100 children. How? When? My to-do list is constantly a mile long! Is this the norm? I cannot tell my whole story because I honestly don't know where to begin. But ever since my partner cheated on me I have felt a whirlwind of emotions and just haven't been OK. I don't know where to go from here, I don't know what is right or wrong anymore to be honest.
I did not take the knowledge of my partner's cheating well. I broke up with him after I learned he was using a gay cruising site called Sniffies, but would eventually become partners with him again for a number of reasons:
I can't shake the feeling that I wasn't enough. Yet if I leave I feel like I am going to be even weaker because finding a partner to accept me for lack of sexual performance would be challenging, especially within my pocket of the LGBT community. While it's great that the LGBT community is big on promoting tolerance, there is also a large focus on sexual openness (at least in my local area) and it can be challenging to feel accepted among my peers because of that. And that's where I question again what my values should be. I feel let down by both my partner and community, and I don't know who I want to be anymore.
While we were broke up for a period of time, I tried having some sexual experiences. However I felt like I was doing that just to build back my self esteem after feeling that my partner and that my community valued sex. While I could please men, I also could not fully be myself. I felt awkward and uncomfortable, and just preferred knowing someone on a more intimate level. Yet part of me felt like I had to have multiple experiences to feel self worth, feeling like my partner's madness was running with mine.
In addition to this stuff effecting my self-esteem, my anxiety from it grew as well. I make burner accounts on Grindr and Sniffies to see if my partner made an account since the incident. In fairness he gives me full access to his phone, search history, location, passwords, etc. but I still feel so paranoid. And it hurts when I talk to my open gay friends who saw him on Sniffies at the time and having to explain to them what happened. It's embarrassing and just lives rent free in my mind.
I don't know what I should do anymore. I can break up but I don't want to leave the friendship from my partner that remains. He genuinely is still distraught months after it happened and we have been having therapy sessions about it. And the sad part is that I want to believe in people changing. I know how much shit my partner has been through and I want to see him become a better person despite what happened, just like how he accepts me despite my flaws and shortcomings. We still are very sexually intimate and he is doing everything he can to try to make it better, including offering me sexual freedom and by being extremely transparent by providing as much information as he can. Yet I honestly don't know what the right way to heal is anymore or just what is right anymore in general.

- He has had a troubled upbringing. My partner was the victim of repeated sexual assault as a child and unfortunately found self worth in pleasing other men throughout his life. Part of it honestly for him is a mental health issue and trauma. I could see his devastation and shame for chatting with other men, and I honestly feel bad that his self esteem is that low to stoop to a low like that. And the sad thing is that I see him love me and dedicate his time and attention to me in so many other ways that it was hard for me just break things off. If he were just an asshole it would be so much easier to move on, but I feel like we are both fucked up in our own ways and I want to try to forgive him. There is a part of him that wants to move past his trauma, and sexually gratifying men has been a demon he has faced his entire life.
- I have a low self esteem myself. I am a mix of socially awkward and anxious, so I would say that my sexual experience was stunted because of that. I briefly had a small amount of flings in college, losing my virginity at 20 and saw a handful or men when I felt brave enough to do so. But once the pandemic hit I would remain sexually dormant for a couple more years. I am very self conscious when it comes to sex and I can often feel like I can't perform well sexually. I have a physical condition that makes it hard for me to ejaculate, so this combined with my anxiety makes having sex with other men challenging. There's no such thing as truely safe sex for women. Crabs and Herpes can be contracted even with condom use. I myself have religiously used condoms and still got HPV, all it takes is one broken condom and HPV can be dormant and undetectable for years. I have been tested yearly since I was 16 and was vaccinated and still had to have a colposcopy and LEEP procedure, men aren't even trsted for HPV... Also, any sex practice where fluids are exchanged or go onto a womans body is inherently unsafe, standard practice for bodily fluids is gloves, gown, mask and goggles, and most places can't even fully enforce condoms because of male demands and financial incentives to engage in unsafe practices (because of male demand)

I just don’t like adding the exchange of money to something that should only be about desire in my opinion. One night stands are inherently about mutual desire which isn’t guaranteed with a sex worker who’s doing so for money.
Again, arbitrary and culturally conditioned on the idea that sex is somehow sacred beyond any other bodily activity. The only reason you see it as different is patriarchy placing value on women not having sex.
The few women out there who do sex work by true and free choice: more power to you. They are a minority, a very small one. Most sex work is forced, usually by a man, onto a woman, with varioua means. Most of the time it won't be "shackle you to tje bed" kind of foced. But there are many ways to traffick someone without doing that. Any discussion about sex work has to account for this fact. Sex work is not like any other jobs because the vast majority of it is forced. Secondly, sex is more intimate and personal than a massage. That's a pretty universal social rule of our world. It might be a socially determined rule (tho i really would not call it arbitrary) but SWs live in the same society you and I live in. They have not fallen from another dimension where having sex for money is the same as laying bricks for money. They are likely to be affected from it in a similar way than other women. So that makes their exploitation (for the 80% that is exploited) even worse.
So I hope you're super against casual sex too! Insert under capitalism aren't all jobs exploitative?

I was just bumped up to Baby Gaylor status, which is fitting and exciting because this is my first post! Also, further context: I’m truly a baby Gaylor, only becoming obsessed with this reading and understanding of Taylor and her lyrics since TTPD, though I’ve been a deep fan since OG Speak Now. I’m also not queer myself, so I’ve been learning a lot from you all the last couple months!
Okay, here’s what I want to share, which I’ll own is not very original but hit me in a deeper way last night, when I was making dinner and humming ICDIWABH when I landed on the line “I can show you lies.”
It was a moment when I felt like the screen pulled back and showed me TTPD as a whole and how it fits into the larger narrative (moves and countermoves) we think she’s been about for a while now.
I’m in full agreement that TTPD is a rage album, about authentic Taylor breaking free from all the entanglements that her label, her management, her dad, the media, her fans, and perhaps even herself have woven around her through the course of her career.
Especially in relation to her fans and the media, “I can show you lies” is very telling.
The public was not prepared for TTPD. Nobody expected it to be heavily laced with a narrative that, on the surface, seemed to connect heavily to a brief fling that happened after a 6-year relationship. Recall all the headlines and reactions that said, basically, “TTPD is about … Matty Healy?”
Then all the jabs at her fans, or at least a portion of her fanbase, from whom she doesn’t need prayers or performative soliloquies, who are clutching their pearls while she calls them wine moms. The public wasn’t ready for that, either.
She’s telling us, “You have no idea. You think you know me, but I can show you lies.”
She’s laying further bricks along the yellow brick road to her eventual coming out, messing with everyone’s heads and seeding the idea of herself —both as a lyricist and a person in the public eye—as an unreliable narrator.
She’s shaking the snow globe, turning the house upside-down, readying the public for something they never in a million years would have expected, just through this one album.
I can’t wait to see what’s next.
