2024.06.02 17:15 TakatoX3 A few words of critique.

I’m +30h into the game, just beat the wing guy at the start of act 2. I don’t want this to be a hate thread or anything like that since I don’t hate bg3. The game has great production value, dialogues are very well written, characters are full of personalty, I like the combat, character creation and class choices are fun. Everyone knows these things are good. Every other Youtube video essayist has already talked about it. I’m making this post because I couldn’t find any good constrictive criticism. I’d want to go a bit deeper than just accepting the fact it’s not for me and moving on. Mostly since Baldur’s Gate 3 seems like a game that I should enjoy. I like story games and I like long rpgs that I can obsess over. This post is not going to be any “definitive deconstruction”though. I haven’t finished the game and I’m not sure if I will. I’ve watched and read some opinions about later parts and I haven’t found anything that would change my stance.
The biggest issue isn’t that Baldur’s Gate 3 has some one cardinal error or major problem. Although there are some things I have an issue with, I’ll get to it. To put it all in one sentence: My biggest problem is that at no point the game has managed to hook me or make me want to see the whole thing to the end. Their is the good, the bad, nothing ugly but nothing outstanding either. I really don’t feel like spending +100h on a game that I think is just okay. I searched to see what it was that made people truly fall in love with bg3 and some opinions I just don’t vibe with. Some say they’ve got into it when they heard the main menu theme, when they’ve made their custom character or when they first landed on the beach and were hooked by the call of adventure. I don’t share those feelings but they are feelings. The fact that I don’t share them doesn’t mean that they aren’t valid.
At the same time I’ve read some points that made me wonder whether or not we are playing the same game. One thing that everyone always brings up is that “the game is great at giving you freedom to approach and solve problems the way you want”. An example of it is supposed to be how you can put a bunch of explosive barrels near one of the goblin leaders to one shot them. You’ve used your knowledge about the game to cheese an encounter. That’s what I mean when I say that the game is good but not fantastic. I don’t deny that such little things have value but they aren’t a selling point by themselves. Learning about that didn’t make me jump from my chair and make me stand their with my mouth open for an hour. Yeah, It’s cool that you can do it but does it really matter if the end result is always the same?
Speaking of results, the whole “actions have consequences” feels greatly overblown. Maybe I feel like it because I didn’t get to act 3, but from what I googled many people had issues with act 3 and community also seems to be in agreement that the story gets worse over time. The fact that the devs are focused on expanding the late game experience also supports that view. Yet even if turning a dead man into an undead and heaving his wife deal with him is going to return later on, it still doesn’t feel all that revolutionary, does it? “Actions have consequences” seems like a very standard rpg trope. I don’t see how bg3 is any special in that regard. Nothing that I’ve seen so far made me believe that it is and things I read on the internet only strengthens my view.
Another point is that “the world reacts to your actions”. I’ve seen a bunch of those YT shorts titled “what happens if you do X before/when/if you do Y in Baldur’s Gate 3”. My experience was an opposite of that and It’s not like I was going out of my way to break the game. You know how in act 1 you get a quest from Wyll to kill Karlach and later on you learn that she’s fine and can join your team? I didn’t know she’s a potential party member so I went with Wyll, the quest giver, to kill the alleged monster but when I made her join, both of them just stood their looking at each other and didn’t say anything before I took a long rest. That’s just act 1 mind you. Another example, something that made me close the game and write this whole thing. The moment where the wing guy comes in in act 2 saying he wants to bring the cleric lady to his boss alive. Not kill, keep her alive. My immediate though was: what if I would beat him and kept him alive instead? The game has non-lethal combat toggle after all. Maybe we could imprison and interrogate him? Nope, nothing like this happened. You have to either kill him or help him. This entire “play the game your way”, ”be creative with every encounter” or ”the world will react to your action” goes completely out of the window.
But maybe if I would complete the game than my opinion would change. Maybe if I’d keep on playing a bit longer I’d find something that would pick my interest. Surely a critically acclaimed, award winning goty has to blow my mind eventually. I’ve being telling myself this after every enemy encounter and after every major dialogue. “It’ll pick up the pace any second now”, but it never does. If the game couldn’t hook me after 30h, I strongly doubt that seen the ending is going to change anything. The most important thing any story, especially longer ones, must do as early as possible is to develop “trust”. If you want to have your plot to be a slow burn with lots of early set ups and big pay offs, you need to make your audience trust you. You can make your story as slow as you see fit, but you need to make them believe that all of it goes somewhere. There wasn’t a single point in bg3 that would make me believe that this whole deal with worms, cultists, magic artefacts and my teammates’ personal drama is going to evolve into anything truly interesting.
It will go “somewhere”, like I’ve seen with Gale. First you learn that he’s a wizard, then you learn he needs to consume magical artefacts, then you learn that he has a magic bomb inside him and then you learn he can blow himself up to beat the bad guys. None of these plot points I find to be particularly interesting. They are a competent plot points but they don’t form any compelling story. It reminds me of that one time Matt Stone and Trey Parker talked about story structure. Never connect your story bits with “and then”, use things like“but”or“therefore”. What we end up with are a bunch of names and events that I can’t relate to, learn anything useful from or form any emotional connection with. It’s lore over story. The way the main story develops is that you learn that “a guy did a thing so we have to go there and do that”. There doesn’t seem to be any form of nuance to any of this. Every major choice boils down to whether you want to be good or evil. Do you want to save refugees from evil goblins or murder them for some reason. Do you want to let a sadist throw gnomes into lava or do you want to throw him into lava.
Another issue is that the set ups themselves are not all that interesting. Most of them are just classic mystery boxes. What’s the deal Shadowheart’s artefact? What’s Nightsong? Why did Wyll make a pact with a demon? Why have we not turn into an alien? Who is the night visitor? Who or what is the Absolute? A good mystery gives you a question and basic information allowing you to make theories about what the answer could be. A simpler, non-mystery set up establishes all the information at the start and just develops it. A mystery box is when the audience is presented with a problem and when they start asking, the answers are “a good question, for a later time”. You know why Karlach is the best teammate? Because she just tells you what’s going on. Shadowheart claims to have no memory, so she doesn’t say anything. Gale is to afraid open up about his issue, so he doesn’t say anything. Lae'zel sees you as inferior, so she doesn’t say anything. Wyll has made a pact, so he can’t say anything. Astarion is evil, so he doesn’t say anything. Karlach openly talks about her heart and history from the start. Everything else is just mystery box. The answer is simple but we can’t learn it for some arbitrary reasons.
Most of those problems probably comes down to the game just not being for me and that’s fine. I don’t want to convince people who enjoy bg3 to start hating the game. I’m honestly curies of how the fans feel about all of this. I don’t mind the spoilers. I’m trying to be contractive and my hopes are that some more knowledgable people will share their own opinion.

2024.06.02 17:06 AppropriateForever92 Do I need a RE Attorney?

Background/short vent: We hired a friend of a friend as an agent, he’d worked with a bunch of our friends on their purchases. We’ve been looking for a while and found a house we liked it (not loved) and agent encouraged us to make an offer. Long story short the offer was very aggressive (+50k over asking with almost zero contingencies, 40k due diligence fee). He told us this rather quickly, but we didn’t digest it fully, we had our kids with us and were naively thinking the agent had our best interests in mind. Offer was accepted and signed the contract in a rush. Only the next day when I started having some remorse did I realize how aggressive our offer was and that the only way out is losing 40k due diligence fee (we’re in the Raleigh, NC area and NC is a due diligence fee state). Fortunately the inspections have come back good. We are now waiting on appraisal. To be clear, this was MY fault and complete negligence for not being more educated and not getting an attorney/third party to look at the contract at the start.
My question is whether it makes sense to hire an attorney to make sure everything is kosher with our closing. Would they be doing the same thing as what the Closing Attorney (recommended by the agent) is doing? It sounds like they are paralegals doing title work, but I’m just worried after not getting the right people involved from the start.

2024.06.02 17:05 messyfrenchgirls ES Lyrics

I have some thoughts to share about the lyrics of don't wanna break up again.
"I fall asleep crying, you turn up the TV. You don't wanna hear me, one more sleepless night."
If she has fallen asleep crying, how is she cognizant of the fact he's turned up the TV? Isn't that like someone saying they "turned up missing"? Was she awake or asleep?
She then goes on to say "one more sleepless night." But she just said she has fallen asleep crying. So I don't think it's a sleepless night for her, unless she is not in fact asleep. Is it a sleepless night for him, for her, or for both parties involved? It sounds to me like he's watching TV and maybe just wants to binge-watch Ted Lasso.
None of this makes any sense to me, and I don't believe it was thought through very well.
I don't understand the lyrics to the title track either - if anyone gets it, please let me know.
I also don't like the NDA and Dalton not having a right to reply. Too bad she didn't get Pete to sign one I guess.
Wishing you all a happy Sunday!

2024.06.02 16:45 Chamaellow I (21f) have feelings for my friend (20m) but I have a boyfriend. How to maintain my relationship with these two People?

Hello,
I've been feeling tormented for the past few months. I have no one to talk to about this issue, as it involves the only two people I'm close with, so I'd really like to get an outside perspective.
I've been in a relationship with my boyfriend (22m) for almost two years now. Things are going well at the moment. We've had some problems in the past, which we managed to more or less resolve through communication, including a major one: a year ago, I crossed some boundaries concerning fidelity. I was lacking a lot of affection in my relationship at the time (we were having frequent arguments due to his lack of effort), and I met a guy at a party who I found very attractive. He started flirting with me, and I let myself enjoy the attention while setting boundaries when he wanted me to be explicit about my attraction (for example, I avoided his invitations to meet up or when he asked me for a kiss). I felt very guilty afterward, cut off contact with the other guy, and told my boyfriend what had happened two or three months later. He forgave me, but now he has a lot of concerns whenever I talk to a guy, which I completely understand.
After that, our relationship was pretty calm. I stopped going out with friends as much—it was mostly just acquaintances from university—so my life revolved around my studies, my hobbies, and my boyfriend. But towards the end of 2023, a new guy joined my program at university. I was the first person to welcome him as he seemed lost. Our interactions were limited to greeting each other in class until Valentine's Day, when I was sitting alone at university, and he came over to join me. He started getting to know me, asking about my hobbies, and suggested we hang out together outside of classes. I was really happy because I missed going out with friends.
The next day, we started sitting next to each other in class, and we got to know each other better. He asked me a lot of questions about my life, my interests, the music I listen to, the books I read, etc. I was thrilled to share these things with someone since few people are interested in these topics when I try to talk about them. But what struck me the most was what he had to say—he has a fascinating world of his own, he's very elegant and romantic, and he has very refined tastes. We had a lot in common, too; we're both passionate about rock music, we both left a science prep school for university for the same reasons, and we're both highly gifted (so we share the same challenges). I started developing feelings as we talked—he's really the type of person I like. I also told him about my love life with my boyfriend, and he told me he was in a relationship too, so I didn't think it was mutual at the time. (Another detail: our respective partners know each other and were friends in high school, which was a funny coincidence for us. Both are studying abroad, so we're in long-distance relationships.)
EDIT : in my case, my long-distance relationship is not permanent and has not always been long-distance. I have only been in a long-distance relationship since the beginning of 2024, but we have been together since 2022, and my boyfriend is coming back in January 2025
However, I was very surprised when he asked for my Instagram account that day. He handed me his phone to look up my account, and I saw that his search history was filled with accounts with my name (there must have been about twenty). I didn't say anything but started to wonder if he liked me. I told my boyfriend about this encounter with the guy (omitting the fact that I liked him because I had no intention of crossing any boundaries this time—I wanted to keep it to a friendship, hoping my feelings would fade over time). My boyfriend immediately concluded that the guy was interested in me based on his Instagram searches, the fact that he suggested hanging out together during our first conversation, all his questions about my interests, etc. So, he's very wary of this guy. He said he would tell the guy's girlfriend if he found out he was cheating with me.
For my part, I wanted to check if he was really interested in me or not because I didn't want to ruin a potentially great friendship based on possibly false assumptions. This guy and I have grown very close. We often eat together, go out just the two of us outside of classes, help each other with homework and studying, share a lot about our lives, and do sports together. He's very attentive to me (for example, once I told him I liked a certain kind of compote, and the following days, he started bringing two of them—one for him and one for me; he buys me drinks before meeting up with me; once we went out at 5:30 PM, my mom was supposed to pick me up but had an emergency and he waited with me until 8:30 PM; he gave me a flower made out of origami). I found his behavior quite ambiguous because usually, only guys who are interested in me treat me this way, but he seems genuinely happy for me whenever I talk about my love life with my boyfriend, unlike other guys. Also, he only has close female friends, so I don't know how to interpret his actions.
Recently, I met one of his best friends for the first time when we ran into each other at the university cafeteria. The three of us ate together. When I introduced myself to his friend with my name, she immediately said, "Oh, so you're THE [my name]," which threw me off. I asked her what she meant by "THE [my name]," and the guy jokingly said, "Do you think we talk bad about you?" I played along, saying yes. The girl laughed and said, "Oh, don't worry, he just told me you have a boyfriend studying in [name of city]." I found it strange that they talked about that, as I didn't know this girl at all, and I looked at my friend who seemed quite embarrassed. At one point, I was alone with her, and she said, "[Guy's name] told me you deleted Instagram! Why?" (I was taking a break from social media to focus on my exams, so the guy couldn't message me for a while, which I hadn't thought about—it created some distance between us for a week). I told my boyfriend all this, and it made him very concerned.
In short, my situation is complicated. I really wanted everything to remain purely friendly with this guy because I have real future plans with my boyfriend and I love him sincerely. But when I'm around this other guy, I can't shake off this attraction, and it's becoming quite frustrating because I'm used to being quite assertive and moving things forward quickly when I like a guy, but now I'm holding back despite my desires. Also, my friendship with him really bothers my boyfriend, who thinks the guy has bad intentions and has many concerns about me due to my past actions. But at the same time, I really enjoy this guy's company—I've never had such a pleasant friendship, so I don't want to lose it. I don't know if I should be as wary of him as my boyfriend is. Usually, the guys who like me are much more explicit about it. To my boyfriend, it's obvious that he's interested in me, but personally, I don't know. I'm lost.

2024.06.02 16:30 YaboyRipTide A year ago today, I flipped a cart and broke my foot. Don’t be a moron like me.

As the title says, a year ago I was on a bachelor party, was speeding down a hill a little too quick, fishtailed, and flipped a cart twice and got pinned underneath it. I ended up tearing the main ligament that holds your foot together and breaking my foot in 3 spots (for the nerds who care it was the Lisfranc and metatarsals 1, 4, and 5).
Had to get surgery within 2 weeks and didn’t walk at all for nearly 4 months. Summer, let alone golf, was over before it started. Once I started walking again I had to go through copious amounts of PT and reconditioning to learn how to walk, jog, and run again. I’m still not at 100% and I don’t think I’ll ever truly be totally normal in my foot again.
Just a reminder to not be an idiot out there. Golf carts can be fun to whip around in, but they provide little protection in case of an accident. Ever since, I cringe at videos of people doing dumb stuff like running each other over or purposely crashing into each other or racing down hills flipping them.
I lived through the aftermath and it ain’t too fun. Golf is hard enough, don’t make it harder by breaking an arm.

“The science of language is a science of very modern date. We cannot trace its lineage much beyond the beginning of our century, and it is scarcely received as yet on a footing of equality by the elder branches of learning. Its very name is still unsettled, and the various titles that have been given to it in England, France, and Germany are so vague and varying that they have led to the most confused ideas among the public at large as to the real objects of this new science. We hear it spoken of as Comparative Philology, Scientific Etymology, Phonology, and Glossology. In France it has received the convenient, but somewhat barbarous, name of Linguistique.

2024.06.02 15:26 feastocrows Buyer agent representing another party for offers on same property?

As the title suggests, can buyer agents represent two parties submitting an offer on the same property, and if yes, given that they have a fiduciary duty to their clients, do they have to disclose to all their clients that they have a conflict of interest?
I kinda suspect my agent is in that territory because they couldn't come to a couple of open houses last Saturday and then I learned that they were going to the same open houses on Sunday. When I asked, they said they are previewing the properties since I was interested and wanted to put an offer on both.
Would appreciate any advice on how you'd deal with this situation?

2024.06.02 15:24 Dwadwadwadwadwadwa Main characters syndrome is going rampant and it's fcking annoying

basically title, in every group with 1620+, people are playing like they must greed permanently and let everyone else do the mechs because "I'm a big 1620+ good boy, I'm the hard carry you peons must make sure I can hit properly!"
Problem comes when literally everyone in the party have this mentality. Even when mechs are mandatory no one moves an inch. Skull in g2 akkan is wrongly placed for R1? Yeah good luck having someone taking the time to repositionning it. Doing red links? Nah both afk in the back thinking the other will go away.
That's just some exemple but high ilvl is getting to the heads of so many players, no one wants to drop their uptime to focus on counters, positionning, dodging, cleaning adds and triggering retaliations patterns etc...
Come one guys your 1620 elixir 40 chars are no longer special so just do the mech properly it's annoying af to have to retry so many times.

2024.06.02 15:18 lycheefarmer9 [Online][5E][Saturday 2pm to ~5/6pm PST] Inexperienced GM wants to create and run a homebrew campaign from scratch. Looking for proactive players with some experience!

Hello fellow RP gamers! My name is Daniel (he/they) and right now I've got this "plan"—OK maybe more of an itch than an actual game plan—to create and run a homebrew campaign using D&D5E, a system I know quite well.
My past GM experience: There was this one D&D5E mini-module I ran from beginning to end, in 16 sessions. It was rocky, a bit linear, but at least quite fun and conclusive for its group. Right now, I'm running the much longer Descent Into Avernus module on Thursday nights. I've actually run other stuff before those two, but I don't really call those good games. They ended whenever Past-Daniel would burn out after making some bad calls. A lot has changed since, and while I don't have much experience yet, I think I've cracked a code on how to have fun running a light-prep, low-burnout campaign. So let's give it a shot.
The Shot, Explained: As you could tell from the title of this post, I want to build and run a big homebrew campaign from scratch. That means taking ideas from my group, tossing them into my boiling hot brain cauldron, and then see what sort of cool world/plot-thingy gets brewed from it. The ideas, plans, tokens, and character sheets aside, eventually I'll prepare a page-length introduction for the new setting, informing the Party of their starting location. Maybe I'll make a basic map too.
I don't want to spent too much time stuck in prep though. I would like for us to start actually playing D&D as soon as we've become invested. Let's say, over the 1-2 weeks after we form the group, I start putting together a homebrew setting. Small and simple to begin with, but it should also be attractive and mysterious enough for the group, full of possibilities they would enjoy. The rest of the campaign setting can be improvised as we go.
Improvised, but not rudderless. A probable structure for it, including milestones that I can plan around, will be created by the players at the start of the campaign, and at other points throughout it. That's right! As the players, YOU get to generate the goals of this campaign. As the DM, I'm only here to create the obstacles against—and the opportunities for—you achieving those goals. This is a bit different from the "DM explains problem, Players react to problem" formula in modules that I feel restricts choices while putting a lot more creative work on the DM's shoulders. If you think this is cool, then maybe you should apply!
But wait, there's more! I am looking for players who fit the following criteria (please read it all carefully before thinking about applying):
How to Apply: Fill out the interest form linked here (https://forms.gle/xVQoacJ91ivspBEPA). I'm looking for a group of 4 players. Maybe 5, we'll see. Depending on how quickly I get response forms, this could take from a couple days to weeks. There's no set deadline for the choosing process, yet. However, I don't want to keep applicants waiting too long on an answer from me, so you should hear from me within a week of submitting your form. I'll be reaching out to any promising applicants for a casual interview over Discord, preferably in voice chat. It's either that or a polite rejection.
Additional FAQ
What are the rules for character creation? House rules? Characters start at 3rd level. Any official D&D5E published content besides Unearthed Arcana is automatically approved. Anything else is approved or rejected on a case-by-case basis, just as they're presented to me for review. Additional character creation specifications and house rules will be discussed and formulated after we gather first and discuss character goals and the campaign setting.
What inspired you? Months of trial and error at GMing left something to be desired + being a player and watching my friends GM + idle Saturdays + read "The Game Master's Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying" at a bookstore and it made me rethink how to run homebrew games vs. modules.
When are you usually free to be contacted via Discord? From 12pm to 12am PST any day of the week, chances are I should be able to get back to you within a few hours. Not counting emergencies, social gatherings that attract my full attention (such as other TTRPG campaigns I'm in), or if I'm vacationing someplace remote.

Reviews!

This book is a great read! Well written with good pacing and dynamic characters. The twists and turns of the book caught me by surprise and just made it impossible to put it down. Fans of urban fantasy and superhero stories will love this unique take on superhero dynamics and powers. Give it a try!
I follow the author on Jacksonwrites, so I've read snippets of Splitting Seconds before, but it was great to see how much more polished the finished product is! It's a fun premise with a lot of charm, with interesting characters and some really thoughtful worldbuilding. Would highly recommend you pick this up, as well as Evergreen, another novella by the author. Would highly recommend, take the time to pick this up, it's absolutely worth a second look.

Chapter One: Blind Dates:

It candidly sucked being surrounded by constant reminders that you’d lost the genetic lottery. Sure, it was easier than some people thought to get around the world without powers; it wasn’t like the government expected everyone to be a speedster or to be able to fly. Hell, a hundred years ago, nobody even had powers. The infrastructure was there. Life went on.
That said, staying cheery about the hand I’d been dealt was difficult. Enhanced perception was useful for a lot of things, from party tricks to always reading the fine print, but next to flight? Next to teleportation?
I’d gotten hung up on movement powers because I’d taken the bus to the bar, and the only superpower buses had was being late.
I was specifically at the bar for the sake of a blind date set up by my best friend; Todd was about two times my size and could throw a car across the street. His powers did nothing to help me with his current obsession with my dating life, but here we were. I supposed it was a fair obsession. I hadn’t been trying.
It honestly made sense that Todd had been keenly aware of romance since he’d met his soul mate. See, a strange thing with powers was that when you were around your soulmate, they were inexplicably stronger. Todd had met Soo-jung when she’d been on vacation in Crescent three years ago. They’d been inseparable since, and he’d been able to throw a car down three blocks instead of across the street.
Or so he claimed. Nobody was eager to volunteer their car for a demonstration, or anything else heavy and expensive, for that matter.
For my part, I hadn’t spent a lot of time guessing what would happen if I met my soulmate. It was a common train of thought for some, but I never found that it stopped at any fun stations. Instead, I indulged Todd’s meddling because he was my friend and bad dates at least made good stories.
“Gimme a sec, I’ll grab us another round,” Todd announced as he pushed out from our table. “Emma said she’s going to be here soon.”
“You bought the last one.”
“Yeah, now you can buy two in a row once Emma gets here and look generous. Think about it, man.”
“Sure,” I answered, but Todd was already walking away from the table and toward the bar.
Soo-jung leaned in. “You know he’s trying, right?”
“I know, maybe a little too much.”
“You don’t hear the half of it.”
“Oh, good.”
“I had to tell him to calm down when it came to buttering you up to Emma,” Soo-jung explained as she took a sip from her drink. “Sometimes I wonder about him.”
“I’m surprised he says anything nice about me.”
“He’d never say it to your face.” She watched Todd at the bar instead of looking at me during our conversation.
“Does that mean you’ll do it for him?”
“He trusts me to keep his secrets.”
“How about I suggest things and read your reaction?” I asked.
Soo-jung frowned in response before she pointedly rolled her eyes. She knew that reading reactions was one of my party tricks. If you couldn’t be powerful, you could at least read a room.
“Okay, fine. What do you know about Emma?”
“Her last name’s Tavish.”
“That’s it?”
“She works with Todd.”
“I knew that. He kept telling me she was a co-worker.”
“Todd thinks she’s cute.”
“He told you that?”
“No, but he has high standards for you.”
“That’s all the detail you have?”
“Todd’s not allowed to talk about work at hom- Hey, honey.”
Todd was back at the table holding all three pints in one arm; he passed one to each of us despite Soo being less than halfway finished with her current drink. Once he’d finished distributing, he turned to Soo-jung and asked her a question in broken Korean.
He’d been trying to learn, and he was still struggling. Not that I knew the language.
“Yes,” Soo-jung responded in English, “we were talking about Emma; no Korean around Toby. It’s rude.”
“I thought you wanted me to practice?”
“You can practice at home.”
“So we were talking about Emma,” Todd jumped back to the previous topic instead of discussing his inconsistent study of Korean. “Awesome woman, perfect for you, man.”
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“Oh, she sucks too.”
“Ah, thanks.”
“He means powers-wise,” Soo-jung stepped in.
“So you do know something about her,” I pointed out.
“Something? I’ve been telling Soo everything since we got in the car to come here.” Just as Todd finished, he flinched. Soo had kicked him under the table. “But it wasn’t much, really.”
“What do I get to know?”
“I don’t want to taint your expectations.” He pushed his empty glass away, swapping it with the new one. “But can I be serious for a second?”
I considered it. “Sure.”
“She’s like my boss’, boss’ boss. So best behavior.”
“Wait. Seriously?” I leaned in. Todd worked for the CPRU, which meant that she had to be a heavy hitter if she was high-ranked in the city’s power regulation department. “She’s—”
“Not quite.” He backpedaled. “We share a building. She’s straight DPR.”
I blinked twice at that. “Way to set me up to fail.”
“You should believe in yourself,” Soo cut in.
“Todd, I w—”
“And she’s here.” Todd had turned his attention away from me and toward his phone. “Hope you’re ready to meet your soulmate.”
“Honey, don’t set that expectation.”
The bar’s front door opened, and I was the only one who could hear it over the atmosphere. I glanced over, and there she was.
She was stunning by any definition, but especially mine. Maybe it was a strange way to describe someone, but she looked beautifully meticulous, from brunette hair to olive skin, to her light blue jacket; everything was in place, and everything about her was gorgeous. Assuming that was Emma, I owed Todd big time.
“Okay, that can’t be her, right?” I asked Todd. After a second, without a response, I checked to see if he was waving at her, but he was stock still, a stupid grin plastered over his face. “Todd?”
Holy shit. The DPR had some crazy people on their roster, but this- I waved a hand in front of Todd’s face and snapped my fingers, then caught the sound of a single cautious heel clicking against the floor.
I stood up from the table and looked back at the door. She’d taken one step into the bar but had gotten caught in the same shock I had. “Emma?” I asked.
She snapped her attention to me -god, her eyes were- but she just looked confused.
“Toby,” I explained, “I’m Todd’s friend.” I motioned over to Todd’s still body and took the first steps to say hello. “This is really impressive. I didn’t think this was possible. It’s cool to meet someone wh—”
“I’m not doing this,” she said. “This is impossible. How are yo—”
“Trust me, this isn’t in my…” We stared at each other for a moment. Somehow, time stopped more than it already was.
“Holy shit.” We both said it at once.
“So this isn’t you?” she asked. Her eyes were still meandering around the frozen bar instead of staying in the conversation with me.
“No, it’s not.” I walked along her gaze and ended up against the bar counter, “did Todd tell you what my power was?”
“He just told me you wouldn’t mind having me around,” Emma answered, which somehow just brought up more questions.
“Enhanced perception.” I grabbed a drink off of the bar to see if I could; As soon as I touched it, it seemed to animate back to life. “What do you mean, ‘mind having you around’?”
“I dampen powers,” she explained, a little quieter than anything else she’d said, “make them weaker, hard to use. The technical definition is long and wordy so…” She sighed as she watched me slosh the beer around. “It’s a lot of trouble, really.”
“Probably good for work,” I offered.
“Pretty much the whole reason I have my job, but Callum wouldn’t admit that.” She approached, but there wasn’t an open seat near where I was standing, nor could we ask for someone to move. “Callum is—”
“Callum Rehsman, head of the D.P.R for the past six years,” I stepped in, “sorry, comes with the perception thing.”
“Honestly, I’m just glad I don’t have to explain it.” Emma took to leaning against the bar instead of walking over to a seat. She undid the top button of her shirt, which was probably too high for a date, anyway. “Emma Terish. Ring any bells up there?”
“No.”
“And you’re?”
“Toby Vander.” I put down the beer to offer my hand, and it froze as soon as I let go. We both paid attention to that instead of the potential formal hello.
“So this isn’t you.” Emma reached for the glass and picked it up; once she did, it animated just like it had with me. “And it isn’t me…”
I swallowed nothing. We’d both said holy shit for a reason, but it felt impossible to admit it. Wasn’t there supposed to be a—Well, something? Anything?
Then again, we were stopping time, and what else could you ask for?
“Do you want a drink, Toby?” Emma asked. She vaulted herself over the bar with a frankly shocking amount of grace for someone in a pantsuit.
“Uh, sure.”
“I’d ask what you were drinking, but we might have limited options.” She was considering her new vantage point from behind the counter.
I took the opportunity to grab the drink I’d left behind on the table. “I’ll use the one I had.” I tapped Todd’s hand for posterity, and nothing happened to him. “Any idea what this might—”
“No idea,” she answered without letting me finish, “but my job involves dealing with unknown powers, so…” She tried to use the soda-gun and swore when it didn’t work. “You learn to roll with it until people cooperate.”
“You still think I’m doing this?”
“I know it’s not me, and there aren’t many options here with us,” she said as she ducked behind the bar and came back up with a lemonade cooler, “but I came here for a date, and I plan to have one. Been a long week.”
I returned to the bar, finding a seat now that she was on the other side. “I just need to establish that this isn’t me. I’m not trying to—”
“If it isn’t you and it’s not me stopping time around us, then someone is giving us a very private venue for our first date.”
“Isn’t that nice?”
“It really is.” She took a sip of her drink, then pulled it away before she had time to swallow. “Shit. Do you have cash?”
“I’ll cover you.” She frowned at that; clearly she wasn’t satisfied with someone else paying for everything. “Plus, you’re serving me tonight. So…” That seemed to be enough plausible deniability to satisfy her. “Cheers?”
“Cheers.”
Throughout drink one, we were casting nervous glances around the paused bar; by drink five, we were laughing, just the two of us. Hours dripped by with the free beer… or they didn’t… It was hard to tell.
Emma added her sixth can to her pyramid and composed herself. “Okay, okay, okay. One second.” She took a deep breath. “This has been so much fun, but I told Todd I’d tell him when I got here so” — she needed another second to find her verbal footing — “can you stop this now?”
“Stop what?” I was halfway through a sip.
“This is the coolest power I’ve seen but—”
“It’s not me, I promise.” my insistence ended up sounding more like a drunk debate. The drunk part was accurate.
“So your power really is enhanced perception.”
“Yes.”
“Okay. Okay. You’re not lying.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Because that’s lame and—” She stopped herself. “Shit, sorry.”
“I am so used to it.”
“You wouldn’t say that drunk if you could stop time is my point.” She almost ducked down to grab another drink but thought better of it. “So, that makes us…”
We’d reached this impasse several times in the last hours. I scanned her. The lines on her face. The size of her irises. She was worried. Apprehensive.
So I said it first.
“We’re soul mates.”
She looked down and to the left, considering instead of answering.
“Why else would one of us display a power we’d never seen before? Unless you’re right and someone was stopping time for everyone but me and—”
“And the woman who’s immune to powers,” she cut in. “Maybe we are soul mates, but turn it off.”
“It’s not—”
“Toby, please.”
“I don’t—” I stopped short and instead tried even though I didn’t know how. My perception was passive. I didn’t get to choose whether I used it. Was there supposed to be a switch somewhere inside my head? Was I...
How long had it been at this point? Six, seven hours? We’d planned to meet pretty late and it would almost be light out by now. She was right. We had to get—
“I don’t know how,” I admitted, “if it’s me.”
Emma opened her mouth to say something, then reconsidered. Her perfectly manicured nails were digging into the vinyl of the bar top.
“Okay. It’s been lovely, but if you getting here started this then,” I said as I stood up, “maybe I just need to leave, and that will turn it off so we can figure out what’s going on.” I took the first steps toward the door.
“That’s a good plan.” She nodded along with what she was saying, like she was convincing herself, “I’ll reach out to you. It was an excellent date.”
“Let Todd know for me,” I added as I reached the door; a second later, I stepped into the chilled early-fall air. The door didn’t shut behind me, so I kept walking until I would have been out of eyesight.
Then I stopped.
Should I have turned around? What were the chances that she was my soul mate? What was I leaving behind if I didn’t see her again? It was a dumb thought, but the idea of walking away started gnawing at me.
But what choice did I have? In front of me, a couple was frozen in the middle of a quiet conversation on the way to the bar. Soul mates only affected one another when they were close by. I took a few more steps and started to sprint.
I was three blocks away when the world stuttered around me. My vision blurred, and the moonlight was shattered by the sun. I stumbled, almost crashing into a woman dressed like she was on her way to brunch.
Shit. I’d left my jacket at the bar, but—
I checked my watch; 8:06 AM.
Hope your enjoyed!

2024.06.02 15:06 lamb_ixB My lil Feedback after hitting 50, doing all challenges and running around a 2k SR

In case, it's not obvious and the wording might hint at something different, that's all my personal opinion based on my personal experience on the game.
Overall it's pretty good, i like most maps, modes, the gameplay feels fluent and gunplay feels satisfying. I just wanted to check it out and ended up with the things mentioned in the title. I try to focus on things I think the game is trying to do instead of what I personally would like:
Technical: Obviously, hit reg and lag are not what you would expect, with seeing those ping numbers in lobbies (normally between 15 - 30). I think this can be improved.
I don't know about that, but often I feel abilities are "blocked" after certain actions. I'm not sure if it's a design decision or if it's bugged, but it feels more like my controller is broken when I try to panic out a grenade after a slide. It breaks a bit the flow of the gameplay.
Loading times are a bit on the higher end. I feel there are a little too many and too long screens for what the rest offers on a XSX. Wouldn't mind them to be a bit better hidden.
Balancing:
Weapons feel fine, honestly. Sure, you got the meta kids and clickbait YouTubers that try to sell the best choice and therefore, you see quite often especially the same SMG, but the real difference between the majority of the guns in a class comes down to a TTK difference that's eaten by lag or doesn't make a difference for 99% of the playerbase. Sniping is a bit too easy (I shouldn't go positive if I only do challenges) and shottys suffer a bit more from the hit reg issues, but nothing that is really a mention worthy outlier and can be adjusted with time. What I really like is the ranges of the classes don't overlap as in CoD. Most of the time you lose with SMGs against AR at Mid+ Range and WIn in close range, as it should be.
Abilities need a bit work, though. My suggestion is to try to focus on creating counters where they are missing.
Echelon: The passive is quite strong, considering real silencers come in that late in weapons unlock. Put them a bit in earlier levels maybe? But the real issues is, when it's paired with the intel suit. This thing is a wall hack for the whole team, where the only counter needs a line of sight for the EMP grenade it. DeadSec Hacking is borderline useless rn, so make it a hard counter for Intel Suit by making it hackable if you get the notification on your screen. It will still have it's 30sec CD and should reduce the win-button character of the interl suite. Speaking of deadsec hacking, maybe enable mines and co as a target for it?
Phantom: I feel the passive is helping a bit too much for a turtling style without any effort to put in. A simple counter would be the Cleaners' passive and fire damage to do double or even more damage on them essentially neutralizing the health bonus.
Monetization driven gamedesign:
I get it, it's F2P and I really love that this game is way more subtle than the shop CoD has become. But there are two things, that are quite annoying for me:
Force end of match victory screen:
I would argue this does nothing in terms of sales. If you make a game that fast, you can't just force a full stop and expect the people to be happy about it and buying stuff they see. Besides that, people like to think they show off stuff they bought. If it was about real feedback, people wouldn't buy anything anymore, because no one is impressed by stuff you can buy in a shop, no matter how it looks. Just try it, let those of us who don't care skip to the next match and I bet people who want to show off will still buy the same amount of things, as long as they believe they show off.
Focus on groups:
Yeah, players are more likely to play and spent money in games their friends play. Win/Win, except with no SBMM in a game with a focus on teamplay you are already on a losing end as a solo player when matched against any sort of party. However, solo players carry the matchmaking and you need them for filling spots. So show some love and at least let me see who is grouped in the lobby and score screen. That's all, not that much honestly and if in doubt, I leave the match anyway.
Verdict:
I really like it this far and I want to see ranked in action, 6v6 is a mess most of the time without SBMM and as solo player. But it will be a tough winter for XD, as CoD will have probably a pretty strong entry this year. But I also don't think it has to surpass it, rather stay healthy enough to be a safe haven for people fed up with CoD. Might be even a good thing for the community if the usual cancer crowd flocks over to the next flashy thing. It has the disadvantage to be very similar to CoD, though. Titanfall could create it's niche, not so sure for XD once honeymoon is over. Gonna buy the cheapest founder pack and buy the BP from it to support it and look how this will evolve. Only fair for having played that much and had a lot of fun.

2024.06.02 14:10 ThrowRAabc567 My husband (M44) tried to cheat on me (F34) with my friend (F34), no regrets. How can I trust him?

:Correction in title: Now regrets. We have been married for 8years and together for 13years, and we have two pre school kids together(2 and 5). Few weeks ago my husband me and my friends were drinking a bit on vacation (my friend came with us as I invited her to come we had big house rented and also other people were coming later). I was tired and kids woke up so I leave them alone, because well I had trust. Later on my husband wakes me up telling me he told my friends she is pretty and that he is very sorry - I am laughing as I am thinking my poor husband he is drunk, haha, but oh how he loves me, I tell him that it’s nothing, I give him a glass of water, and I agree as my friend is very beautiful. But next day I find out not that innocent- he was in her room, and was trying to touch her and well she refused and would have told me anyway. Not to spoil the vacation, I did not make a big scene of it though I told him it is not correct at all and we did not speak to him for some time. Since than he behaves very good, and act as if he regretted truly, bought flowers, tell me he loves me, that he is even more sure about it... But I am wounded and afraid - is this not like next time he will cheat on me with a someone who is not in risk od telling me? I mean I got into shape after deliveries, I cook, I work, intimacy is good, ok house is little bit messy, but… why he is doing this? Recently I have been gaining more money than him, is it like he needed maybe some ego boost? Or is he like bored? Would like open relationship be an solution? We were discussing open relationship option before this happened what is an interesting concept but as we don’t see it working anywhere around us (if it works for someone long term tell me how I am curious) and we did not agree on it -I find it dangerous for the family ... (not speaking about STI, potentional emotional harm to the third party, etc). Anyway - What to do - how can I trust him again? Becoming paranoia wife and like never let him alone with a woman drinking is really not something what I would want to do… thank you in advance for advices, please be kind.

2024.06.02 13:36 lemonsaltwater Colin and Penelope’s Financial Shenanigans: An Audit

Colin and Penelope’s Financial Shenanigans: An Audit
Our girl's got negotiating skills
I’m going to start this out by saying I absolutely ADORE Colin and Penelope, so this post is all in good fun 😊
As someone who usually only dips into romance as a break between non-fiction history/economics/business, I can’t help but find my mind drifting towards what a forensic accountant or auditor would find if they dove into Colin and Penelope’s finances and their general attitudes towards money.
For context, an auditor is someone who looks all all transactions as well as internal systems of control around decisions and money (how money is used but also how it stored, safeguarded, etc) in order to manage risk and discover potential fraud, and a forensic accountant is someone who is brought in after financial crime is already suspected (think, Enron). I think both professions would have a field day, and I would be utterly delighted if we happen to have some within the Polin hive.
Shall we start?

COLIN — The Bridgerton Estate Auditor's Report

Overall Picture - familial: Comes from a well-off family and holds a trust fund of unknown sum from his father.
Overall Picture - personal: Has no independent source of income. Has no definite professional aspirations. Third son who will not inherit title. Has never shown an interest in managing family business affairs. Does not have a university degree. His only marketable skill is potentially writing.
Controls and Fiduciary Responsibility: Areas for Concern
  • Lack of thrift: Spent two entire summers traveling and buying nice gifts and clothes without a personal source of income.
  • Lack of thrift (2): Plans a long engagement to a woman who is likely without dowry so that a grand wedding can be planned, presumably financed by his own family. ("Engagement #1")
  • Lack of regard for systems of decision making: Two examples of proposing to women without 1) consulting their families first, 2) without regard for whether there would be a dowry, and 3) full due-diligence on his intended’s personal and familial financial situations and family's risk profile
  • Lack of regard for financial controls: Withdraws a significant sum in order to make an investment on behalf of the family without the Lord’s permission and attempts to hide it.
  • Poor fiduciary duty — insufficient investment due-diligence: Considers an investment after two meetings and without having personally inspected mines himself. Does not get a sample product and have a neutral third-party expert assess the product for its quality. Potentially only consults said experts *after* making an investment.
  • Conflict of interest: Makes an investment in a friend’s family business not for the sole purpose of furthering the Estate but for social reasons as well (to bring families together). This conflict of interest results in a lack of proper due-diligence (above) and investment proves to be a fraud
  • Poor fiduciary duty - cash expenses: Sudden increase in the number of unexplained petty cash transactions.
  • Misappropriation of Estate funds for personal purposes: Uses Estate funds in a criminal manner to further own personal relationships at the financial expense of the Estate (See "Poor financial duty - cash expenses"). Uses Estate funds to pay for illegal services on at least two separate instances (sex workers).
  • Increases Estate Risk Exposure: At least four separate instances of taking actions that potentially increased or did increase Estate exposure to scandal (Proposal #1, Gemstone “Mines”, Bribery, Proposal #2)
COLIN — Crimes:
  • Bribery -- Confirmed: Bribed at least one (1) Featherington maid and proceeded to take advantage of a young lady. At least one non-spousal witness would be able to attest.
  • Bribery - Suspected: Bridgerton footmen (drawing room), and Featherington footmen (carriage ride)
  • Misappropriation of Estate funds in order to commit another crime (bribery) -- Confirmed.
  • Misappropriation of Estate funds in order to commit another crime (purchasing illegal services) -- Confirmed. At least four witnesses would be able to attest
  • Embezzlement — investment in mines without CFO’s approval - Confirmed
Upon investigation, misappropriation of Estate funds to pay for illegal services (sex workers) appears to be a widespread problem by members of the Estate.
Auditor’s Recommendation: Implement dual signature controls for large withdrawals; require receipts for petty cash transactions; implement monthly limits on petty cash withdrawals.

PENELOPE — Business Risk Assessment

Overall picture -- familial: Comes from a family of apparently significant means but with a history of frequent past questionable decision making and insolvency.
Overall picture -- personal: Showed entrepreneurial talent from a young age. Demonstrated marketable skills with a sophisticated understanding of subscription business models and word-of-mouth marketing techniques. Demonstrated negotiation skills and ability to manage key suppliers. However, the subject's current business is illicit.
Business Model Assessment: Areas for Concern
  • Revenue Sources: Primary finding is that the subject runs a secret, unlicensed newsletter-circulation business with significant revenues.
  • Single Point of Failure: Business requires subject to keep a low profile in order to source information for the business. Should subject be unable to undertake information-sourcing activities, revenue and subscriber loyalty is threatened.
  • Transaction risk: Revenues are all cash, which investigators generally regard as a high risk for money-laundering.
  • Safeguarding of funds: Does not use a bank. Stores cash under floorboards and in her bra.
  • High untraceable cash expenses: Frequent, unexplainable expenditures related to private carriages, printing presses, and printing press key blocks that cannot be explained without exposing the illicit business
  • Inconsistent thrift practices: While subject saved the funds from the business for a long time, subject displays signs of new wealth without a clear source. Spends significant funds on new dresses, which raises suspicions among siblings and general society population.
  • High risk of defamation lawsuits: The newsletter has defamed dozens of society subjects. As the business is being operated as a sole proprietorship without apparent Director's Insurance, the subject has a high personal exposure to defamation-related lawsuits.
PENELOPE — Crimes
  • Money laundering -- Suspected: works with a lawyer to launder cash from the business into family's finances
  • Operating a business without a license -- Confirmed: Operates a newsletter-subscription business without permission from the Crown. At least two witnesses would be able to attest
  • Tax fraud: At least 3 years of back taxes + interest owed to the Crown
Upon investigation of the Featherington family, a significant pattern of gambling, illegal debts, scams, and other crimes were uncovered.

Queer reads are something that has always existed among fiction, especially genre fiction, but it is has only recently been the case that they've allowed to start emerge from the shadows. That doesn't lesson the role they've always had, though, as many people have a compelling argument that the driving force for Trekkiedom (the godfather of all modern fandom) was actually slash fiction.
Still, it can sometimes be hard to find fiction where the characters aren't minor, killed off quickly, or allowed to express their sexuality. Plenty of other readers also assume any queer friendly work has to be focused on romance. As a queer friendly author, I know it's not THAT hard to put a prominent character in your stories but finding books containing said content can sometimes be a chore.
What are the books where the characters are LGBTQA and simply allowed to be? Well, here's my picks as a CIS heterosexual man as clearly everyone is clamoring for my insight. JK. I've tried to pick a mixture of indie and traditional.

Blurb: The first book in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison's Hollows series!
All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party . . . and to feed.
Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it's Rachel Morgan's job to keep that world civilized.
A bounty hunter and a witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead . . . or undead.
Review: The Hollows is an extremely fun urban fantasy series following the adventures of Rachel Morgan and her best friend Ivy that just about everyone wanted to hook up among the fandom but, sadly, didn't. Still, while Rachel seems mostly straight, Ivy remains a fantastic bisexual motorcycle riding vampire detective that really could have handled her own series. She's also a rare Asian American protagonist.
9] Legacy of the Brightwash by Krystle Matar
Blurb: Tashué’s faith in the law is beginning to crack. Three years ago, he stood by when the Authority condemned Jason to the brutality of the Rift for non-compliance. When Tashué’s son refused to register as tainted, the laws had to be upheld. He’d never doubted his job as a Regulation Officer before, but three years of watching your son wither away can break down even the strongest convictions.
Then a dead girl washed up on the bank of the Brightwash, tattooed and mutilated. Where had she come from? Who would tattoo a child? Was it the same person who killed her? Why was he the only one who cared?
Will Tashué be able to stand against everything he thought he believed in to get the answers he’s looking for?
Review: Legacy of the Brightwash is a fantastic book that is up there with Kings of Paradise for being an argument that indie doesn't mean lack of literary quality. Tashue is a bisexual man and one torn by the obligations of duty in his steampunk world that treats everyone with magic with horrifying rules as well as suspicion. Unfortunately, the choices forced on him include dealing with it appearing in his own family.
8] Miskatonic University: Elder Gods 101 by Matthew and Mike Davenport
Blurb: Miskatonic University is bathed in the blood of the students who have walked its halls. A place where the darkness is more than just shadows.
As with many of the best universities, many students having a distinguished family name—but at Miskatonic this can be as much a curse as a blessing.
Such an aged repository of occult histories has secrets of its own. Miskatonic University is an anchor for all reality. Held tentatively in place by spells woven into its walls over generations.
Someone, somewhere, is breaking those spells and all of the universe is on the brink of tearing apart.
Review: I am going to be biased toward any queer friendly HP Lovecraft material and had quite a bit to choose from (as another entry will show). In this case, I had to recommend a delightful SUPER POWERED's esque urban fantasy that is more Buffy the Vampire Slayer than cosmic horror. Still, I love the character of Ralph who wants to leave his isolated religious community to play football as well as express his sexuality. It's just that community is Innsmouth.
7] Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree
Blurb: Come take a load off at Viv's cafe, the first and only coffee shop in Thune. Grand opening!
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.
However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.
Review: The archetypal example of "cozy" fantasy these days. Viv is an orc who just wants to open a coffee shop in a Medieval Dungeons and Dragons-esque setting. She's also a lesbian. This results in her having an awkward relationship with her succubus employee, who everyone has dismissed as a tart because of her species. It's actually really sweet and something that I would have loved to have a sequel to follow up on (instead we got a prequel).
6] The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison
Blurb: Katherine Addison returns to the glittering world she created for her beloved novel, The Goblin Emperor, in this stand-alone sequel
When the young half-goblin emperor Maia sought to learn who had set the bombs that killed his father and half-brothers, he turned to an obscure resident of his father’s Court, a Prelate of Ulis and a Witness for the Dead. Thara Celehar found the truth, though it did him no good to discover it. He lost his place as a retainer of his cousin the former Empress, and made far too many enemies among the many factions vying for power in the new Court. The favor of the Emperor is a dangerous coin.
Now Celehar lives in the city of Amalo, far from the Court though not exactly in exile. He has not escaped from politics, but his position gives him the ability to serve the common people of the city, which is his preference. He lives modestly, but his decency and fundamental honesty will not permit him to live quietly. As a Witness for the Dead, he can, sometimes, speak to the recently dead: see the last thing they saw, know the last thought they had, experience the last thing they felt. It is his duty use that ability to resolve disputes, to ascertain the intent of the dead, to find the killers of the murdered.
Celehar’s skills now lead him out of the quiet and into a morass of treachery, murder, and injustice. No matter his own background with the imperial house, Celehar will stand with the commoners, and possibly find a light in the darkness.
Katherine Addison has created a fantastic world for these books - wide and deep and true.
Review: I love THE GOBLIN EMPEROR but, sadly, Katherine Addison wasn't interested in continuing to write for the character of Maia. However, she was interested in continuing to write for her world. Thara Celehar is a priest who has the ability to talk to the dead. He's also a gay man who has had tragedy in his backstory but may well find love again (but isn't actively looking). Through him we get to explore the steampunk fantasy setting of Addison's world and its many mysteries. Who murdered an opera singer and what was their motivation? Will anyone accept the disgraced priest who, nevertheless, now has friends in high places?
5] Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice
Blurb: Here are the confessions of a vampire. Hypnotic, shocking, and chillingly sensual, this is a novel of mesmerizing beauty and astonishing force—a story of danger and flight, of love and loss, of suspense and resolution, and of the extraordinary power of the senses. It is a novel only Anne Rice could write.
Review: It's interesting to note the subtext was never particularly subtextual but a lot of people insisted it was until the movie and television show made it impossible to deny. Yes, Louis and Lestat are lovers with their adopted vampire daughter Claudia. There's also a bunch of musings about immortality, God, killing to survive, and the ennui of living in general. The series goes off the rails after the fourth book and was already pretty strange by the third. Still, the first two books are classics for a reason.
4] Villains don't date Heroes by Mia Archer
Blurb: Night Terror. The greatest villain Starlight City has ever known. The greatest supervillain the world has ever seen. She rules her city with an iron fist, and there are no new worlds to conquer.
Needless to say life is pretty damn boring.
All that changes when she decides to shake things up by robbing a bank the old fashioned way and runs into the city's newest hero: Fialux. Flying Fialux. Invulnerable Fialux. Super strong Fialux. Beautiful Fialux?
Night Terror has a new archenemy who might just be able to defeat her, but even more terrifying are the confusing feelings this upstart heroine has ignited. She doesn't like heroes like that. She definitely doesn't like girls like that. Right? Only she can't deny the flutter she feels whenever she thinks of Starlight City's newest heroine!
The line between hate and love is a razor's edge that the world's greatest villainess will have to walk if she wants to hold onto that title!
Villains Don't Date Heroes! is a lesbian scifi romance novel that explores the world of villains, antiheroes, and heroes in a whole new way!
Review: I admit this book is probably not going to be anyone's idea of a classic but it's also nice just to have something that's just plain fun. This is basically Megamind if the protagonist was a lesbian and in love with Supergirl. It's not remotely serious and yet has a lot of fun with our mad inventor heroine dealing with her very unwelcome crush that is interfering with her plans to take over the world. I didn't really gel with the series as a whole but the first book is just plain fun.
3] Dreadnought by April Daniels
Blurb: A trans teen is transformed into a superhero in this action-packed series-starter perfect for fans of The Heroine Complex and Not Your Sidekick.
Danny Tozer has a problem: she just inherited the powers of Dreadnought, the world’s greatest superhero. Until Dreadnought fell out of the sky and died right in front of her, Danny was trying to keep people from finding out she’s transgender. But before he expired, Dreadnought passed his mantle to her, and those secondhand superpowers transformed Danny’s body into what she’s always thought it should be. Now there’s no hiding that she’s a girl.
It should be the happiest time of her life, but Danny’s first weeks finally living in a body that fits her are more difficult and complicated than she could have imagined. Between her father’s dangerous obsession with “curing” her girlhood, her best friend suddenly acting like he’s entitled to date her, and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like she’s in over her head.
She doesn’t have time to adjust. Dreadnought’s murderer—a cyborg named Utopia—still haunts the streets of New Port City, threatening destruction. If Danny can’t sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction.
Review: Probably one of the best superhero novels I've ever read that just so happens to also be a trans lesbian coming of age story. Danny is a girl who lives under a homophobic father when she gains the idealized form she's always dreamed of (which was being a beautiful superpowereful woman). Unfortunately, not everyone in the world is ready to accept that the heir to the Superman equivalent is a trans girl. This includes a TERF-esque druidess and what is basically Elon Musk (surprise-surprise). I want the third book in the trilogy now.
2] Of Honey and Wildfires by Sarah Chorn
Blurb: From the moment the first settler dug a well and struck a lode of shine, the world changed. Now, everything revolves around that magical oil. What began as a simple scouting expedition becomes a life-changing ordeal for Arlen Esco. The son of a powerful mogul, Arlen is kidnapped and forced to confront uncomfortable truths his father has kept hidden. In his hands lies a decision that will determine the fate of everyone he loves—and impact the lives of every person in Shine Territory.
The daughter of an infamous saboteur and outlaw, Cassandra has her own dangerous secrets to protect. When the lives of those she loves are threatened, she realizes that she is uniquely placed to change the balance of power in Shine Territory once and for all. Secrets breed more secrets. Somehow, Arlen and Cassandra must find their own truths in the middle of a garden of lies.
Review: Sarah Chorn is an incredibly underrated indie author and a fantastic reviewer as well. Her Song of the Sefate books are the ones that everyone should read, though. Basically, Wild West stories set in an alternate world where they harvest a magical substance called shine. The protagonists are a lesbian and a transman who are primarily dealing with the plot of resistance to corporate control. It can get dark but it is fantastically written and written from a place of heart.
1] Winter's Tide by Ruthanna Emrys
Blurb: After attacking Devil’s Reef in 1928, the U.S. government rounded up the people of Innsmouth and took them to the desert, far from their ocean, their Deep One ancestors, and their sleeping god Cthulhu. Only Aphra and Caleb Marsh survived the camps, and they emerged without a past or a future.
The government that stole Aphra's life now needs her help. FBI agent Ron Spector believes that Communist spies have stolen dangerous magical secrets from Miskatonic University, secrets that could turn the Cold War hot in an instant, and hasten the end of the human race.
Aphra must return to the ruins of her home, gather scraps of her stolen history, and assemble a new family to face the darkness of human nature.
Winter Tide is the debut novel from Ruthanna Emrys, author of the Aphra Marsh story, "The Litany of Earth"--included here as a bonus.
Review: Ruthanna Emrys is a Jewish lesbian woman as well as a massive HP Lovecraft fan. You can understand why she has a different perspective than Howard Phillips on a few things. Her Innsmouth Legacy series (which needs a third book dammit) follows the adventures of Aphra Marsh as she investigates the supernatural with a closeted Jewish FBI agent, a lesbian professor of mathematics, and her bisexual debutante associate. Aphra herself is ace and someone who just doesn't think about human men or women that way.

Honorable Mention

Velveteen Versus the Junior Super Patriots by Seanan Maguire
Blurb: "How dare you? I never asked for you to hunt me down!" No, Velma Martinez hadn't. But when you had once been Velveteen, child super-heroine and one of The Junior Super Patriots, West Coast Division, you were never going to be free, even if your only power was to bring toys to life. The Marketing Department would be sure of that.
So it all came down to this. One young woman and an army of misfit toys vs. the assembled might of the nine members of The Junior Super Patriots, West Coast Division who had come to take her down.
They never had a chance.
Velveteen lives in a world of superheroes and magic, where men can fly and where young girls can be abducted to the Autumn Land to save Halloween. Velma lives from paycheck to paycheck and copes with her broken-down car as she tries to escape from her old life.
It's all the same world. It's all real. And figuring out how to be both Velveteen and Velma is the biggest challenge of her life, because being super-human means you're still human in the end.
Join us as award-winning author Seanan McGuire takes us through the first volume of Velveteen's - and Velma's - adventure.
Review: I'm a big fan of this series and am sad that it's not available on Kindle or paperback. The story follows Velvet Martinez who is a girl who can animate toys. Which is a deceptively powerful ability. One of the most interesting plotlines in the book, though, is her relationship with Sparkle Bright. Velvet assumed she had been going for her crush going up but she was actually a closeted lesbian girl (because of the Marketing DepartmentTM). Sparkle Bright gradually achieves self-actualization and starts a relationship with steampunk heroine, Victory Anna. Plus, there's the Princess who is a trans girl representing all princess tropes.

Title

[REQ] loan desired $300 for speaker. paid back in 3 weeks or even sooner if I get the money before then.

Post contents

Ok so here is the story, I volunteered to dj my aunt's birthday party. Its her 50th birthday so my cousins are making this into a huge thing. since my aunt never had a quince (mexican version of a sweet sixteen) thats what they are gonna do for her. they asked me dj the party and of course i said yes. the thing is I have one speaker, a Mackie thump 15-A. I have gotten by with just one because i usually dj small apt parties, and so it doesnt take much to fill the room, but this venue is a lot bigger. I have been saving up for this, I have about 100 only, because I am taking summer classes and cant work as much as id like too. My employer, a guy that i do labor for, is going to pay me at the end of this week, i have $130 dollars worth of hours put in so far, plus about $50 of unpaid supplies that i fronted him. this weekend I'm prob gonna put in a good 120 worth of hours.i have to pay my phone bill which is 70 bucks so thats putting a dent in my cash right now. the speaker is 280, plus the stand which is like 30, so I just want to order the speaker and make sure it gets here before the party. I am also waiting on a $3k student loan check to arrive (it is sup to help me with summer school expenses as well as rent). I am hoping the check gets here this week, but I'm running out of time to order this thing and get it here in time. I will be willing to give interest on this too.
EDIT: the problem isn't having the money later to repay, its the timing on when the money gets here. I want to make sure I have the equipment before the party.
