2024.05.20 02:23 NotSoSlimShady1001 The Spirit of a Predator - Chapter 25: An Open Door

[ First / Previous ]
Memory Transcription Subject: Hileen, Krakotl Fugitive Recovery Agent
Date [standardized human time]: November 28th, 2136
It'd been a while since I sat in Marlig's office for a talk face-to-face. Given the agency's secluded location at the edge of the downtown region, it was a chore to drop by when it wasn't for business, but I'd deemed the matter at hand to be worth my time.
I passed by Nampi at her desk on my way to the door and she gave me a coy glare as I carried on. Trying to ignore her risible ear waggle, I turned the corner to the door with my boss’s name painted on the glass panel where I could hear the frantic crumpling of paper.
Quietly, I entered Marlig's office without prompt as I knew he hated to be spooked by knocking. My mentor was surprisingly spry for a bird at his age, sorting through papers with one wing and an eye while using his talons with the other to set away the papers he had splayed out.
“Hileen!” he chirped. “Glad you could make it in today. I was just finishing up my paperwork. Take a seat.”
It was always nice to hear him drop the professional motif for a more grandfatherly attitude when speaking in person. I did as he suggested and took a seat while he grumbled to himself over the sorting. My eye caught a few of the old contracts he was rifling through and saw that some dated back to his days as an agent.
Eventually, he left some sitting out as he sequestered the rest back into their files, sorted by a dichotomy that only he and Nampi could comprehend fully. He motioned with a wing for me to peruse and I turned the first one to face me to find it was my first contract, signed by me in a sloppy fashion. “This takes me back a couple of years.”
“Slick bastard thought he could get away on a forklift but you showed him! Certainly more exciting than my first day!”
“Mm-hmm. And it was when I nearly got impaled that you had the idea to commission all of us utility vests.”
He chuckled, “I really should’ve done so sooner. Cuts and scratches were already a risk, but a forklift was a new one!”
I flipped through the pages of each report, finding that Marlig's notes were filled with praises of my work. There were highs and lows, but I was flattered to find that the grizzled krakotl held my performance in such high regard.
Flawless interception!” read one footnote about me catching a runner. “Couldn't have done it better myself!
Marlig waited patiently as I browsed quickly through each page, realizing more and more how the notes also marked improvements in my work. How I found it easier to talk down a rowdy client, or apprehend them in the case that they were beyond helping on my part. Flowery language plastered most pages with him fawning over my work as a doting father would to his prodigal child.
The trend took a sharp turn as the notes became fewer and more critical the closer the dates reached to the present. I brushed the others aside with a wing to peruse the final paper. “And this…”
“Is Tac. Your latest contract. The most recent in a line of declining performance since the interview. This has become a pattern, Hileen, and its consequences are beginning to reach beyond yourself. Paji and Vesek resigned recently for personal reasons, which leaves us even less hands on deck than before. That's four people to cover the entire municipal region, and maybe even beyond, should needs arise. Three, if we include this little probation I have you on.”
“What was I supposed to do? Marlig, these ‘jobs’ you've got us working on overstep the contracts we were signed on with. Our job is to make sure people obey their court-mandated duties, not drag them off to the facilities ourselves!”
“... So the trip we took to the facilities did bother you.”
A sigh clicked in my throat as he reminded me. “Is that what happens to the people we take in, Marlig? Is that what would've happened to your wife?”
His feathers ruffled.
“That's what happens to those who are too dangerous to the general public to be left roaming free. Not everyone we deal with winds up there, but everyone can be subject to it. Miskela sued for her exoneration and proved in court that she was not diseased. I brought you there to show you how it helps the people, but I see now that it was a mistake. I understand why you were so perturbed, really, but it's how things have been for centuries. It's how we've protected ourselves from the dangers out there.”
“You were willing to let Barsul be interned there, too.”
Marlig flinched and sighed as he swept the papers towards himself once I'd signaled I was done. He turned one eye to me while he sorted them.
“There's no room for favoritism, girl. I negotiated for him to be allowed to walk free, and look where that got me. That boy - your neighbor - suffered the consequences of my nepotism. So too would the girl, had nobody intervened.”
“Like Richard.”
“The human, yes. Or you. Or the police. Where does this sudden obsession with humans come from, anyway? I get notifications of you talking about the acceptance of them all the time on forums.”
“Does it even need explaining?”
“Well, I guess not, no, but it's certainly an about-face from the way you used to talk about them with me beforehand.”
“People can change, for better or worse. Which one I fall under remains to be seen.”
Marlig stroked at the plumage on his neck as he finished his sorting. “I hope it's the former, for your sake. Was there any reason you came to talk, or were you just checking that I hadn't gone senile?”
“Well, I was hoping to borrow your secretary for the evening.”
He perked up while his eyes narrowed and he laced his fingers together with curiosity. “You… want to spend an evening with Nampi?”
“It's not what you're insinuating, but yes.”
“I was insinuating nothing,” he warbled coyly. “Go ahead and take her, and make sure to split the bill at dinner.”
“Pain-in-the-ass geezer. I'll keep in touch if your friend causes any more trouble.”
“Keep in touch regardless. Miskela and I get lonely in our old age,” he called back. “Take care.”
I stepped out into the hallway and turned toward the desk where I could hear the secretary's claws tapping furtively at her keyboard. Nampi sat silently with her ears and tail in a relaxed position that implied a bored demeanor. There was barely any response as I stood before her, waiting politely for her acknowledgment that never came.
Hesitantly, I cleared my throat.
An ear raised in acknowledgement, but her focus remained on the screen of her computer. “Mhm?”
“Do you…?”
Her ear rotated toward me, though she still maintained a passive attitude as she continued to glare mindlessly at the monitor.
“Are you free this evening?”
“Well, I'm quite booked, I believe. Why do you ask?”
I was surprised at her curt, dry tone. She hadn't spoken with me like this since we first got to know one another.
“Well,” I started. “I realized something. Every time we went out, whether it was clubbing, or dinner, or even walking around the parks, you always footed the bill. And so…”
Slowly, her other ear perked up and I saw her keystrokes slow down as she listened in.
“I wanted to return the favor?”
Her lips smacked as she opened her mouth, though paused before she spoke. “How could you possibly do that?”
“With a little gesture of friendship.”
Nampi's horizontal pupil turned up toward me and her tail twitched.
I continued, “So that belt you're wearing? It's the same belt you've worn since we first met. And I know you're the pragmatic type who'd never spend a credit more than she needs to, except for all the times you do"- her ears twitched in indignance -"I wanted to see about getting you a little something… extra?”
Her paws raised from the keyboard and she leaned in, resting her snout on her palms. “Go on.”
The bubbly venlil's tail sold out her collected facade as it twitched with anticipation. She was cornered and she didn't even know it yet.
“Well, I found just the place on the other side of town where we can start. It's a place almost as rich and indulgent as yourself.”
“The Platinum Paw? I mean3”
Her ears folded back in embarrassment as she cracked. She wasn't cut out for acting anyway.
“So that's what it's called! Jeez, I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was called. Now what do you say? We go over there and find you something nice—”
I hadn’t even finished my thought before Nampi had grabbed her bag and was out the door, giving me a playful tail flick that said come and get me.

The place I suggested was in a shopping center on the opposite side of town, though easily accessible because of its proximity to the transport rails. Nampi had insisted on grabbing something to eat beforehand and so now gleefully bit into a bundle of stalks that had been “grilled” as explained from the food truck we'd stopped at.
Her tail flicked back and forth with her usual enthusiasm as we entered the massive complex of stores. The roofless plan allowed the natural, orange sun to flood the upper levels while artificial lighting illuminated the ground level wherever the light couldn't reach.
The place was built in the last decade by the previous City Magister in a bid for popularity, though ultimately for naught as he would lose the vote following a scandal involving an iftali priestess and a carved bar of soap. I had to say that despite being sick in the head, he sure had a great sense of decor.
Nampi snacked away, joining me in admiring the scenery as we continued to the place I’d planned out for us. Aimless chatter all melded together into a single, thrumming murmur as pedestrians navigated the many levels and stores offered in the place.
A troupe of children passed by us, held in a chain of tails and arms as they were escorted by a pair of venlil who I assumed were students and teachers on a school trip. I caught a whiff of a sweet, aromatic breeze and found it to come from a perfume shop on the same level as us; naturally, venlil were not to be found inside.
We passed a fountain where a couple sat on the edge, their tails twined together as they giggled and flirted. I turned and caught Nampi watching them as well, though she awkwardly returned to sucking the remains of her meal from her claws when we made eye contact. Her ears lifted when I raised a wing to signal to the store we were going to stop at first.
Platinum Paw, The Greatest Fashion Emporium For Everyone!
The title alone was painfully cliche, taken to the tenth power by the brightly lit store taking up three department slots. Despite the flashy exterior, though, it was the best place to shop for belts, brooches, and bracelets alike. Customers who looked like they earned my yearly salary in a week browsed the higher end brands while I brought my friend to the section I wanted to show her.
Her ears were held up as we stood together next to a shelf chock full of fashionable bags and bandoliers of every variety.
“Pick one,” I told her.
Nampi's ears shot to a straight pose in surprise, “Any?”
“Within reason. I've got a few extra credits to blow and I know nobody better to spend it on.”
With an inviting headtilt, I let Nampi peruse the shelves at her leisure. Her lips pursed together and her tail flicked with glee as she fingered at every piece that caught her eye. I chuckled at her outburst of enthusiasm while turning to find my own items to gloss over.
A breeze from outside nipped at my beak while I considered what I’d like to purchase. The place dripped with an atmosphere of faux hospitality, from the bright blue-stained floorboards to the radio prattling off advertisements in a sickeningly sweet tone to the faint, fruity aroma of scented cleaner. It was oppressive as only a fissan-owned company could be to the senses.
What I wouldn’t pay to see how a human would fare in such an environment.
I knew they were social creatures at least, but I had no doubt that the predatory senses of a human, so honed to hunting, would get overstimulated in this center of gaudy indulgence. Knowing I was something of a predator myself made me sympathize provided that even I had to squint to keep the pale lights inside from searing my eyes. I could only imagine how the arboreal eyes of a Terran would fare. I was so lost in thought imagining how lost the Terrans would be that I could almost ignore the obnoxious giggling and metallic rattling coming from behind me.
Risking a peek at the source, into my sight came a pair of venlil, one a male carrying a pair of bags as well as a couple more strapped to his belt. The bored expression in his eyes was not one of a man who was in high spirits. The other venlil was a woman who was the source of the noise.
Her mottled gray pelt was accented by a tasteful belt design, free of almost any practical functions but not flashy or excessive in garnishment either. At least, that’s what I would say, were it not for the braid of beads that dangled on the belt, jingling with each bounce of the lively woman’s stride. It was clear that such a gaudy accessory was intended to draw attention to her, though why was a mystery. Certainly, the shiny braids seemed designed as decoration first and practical second.
She turned about and I faced back to my browsing before she could catch me staring. Nampi was nowhere in sight, though I figured she was somewhere behind the shelf, sifting through every accessory on the section I'd suggested.
Clink.
Something pelted to my immediate right. I tilted my head to spot a tree nut shell clattering to the floor. Without being able to guess where it came from, I had to wonder what could've launched it over this way. Even with my keen eyesight, nobody in the crowd seemed to be a suspect.
Clink.
Another shell pelted my vicinity, ricocheting off of the floor and hitting the shelf I was standing next to. I ruffled my feathers in frustration - clearly, someone was trying to get my attention, though I couldn't make out who it was. Out of the corner of my vision, the woman from before eyed me curiously as I looked about, though I wasn't interested in engaging with her.
Thwack.
One more shell came flying and, unfortunately, the aim on this one was true, nailing me on the beak. Irritated, I stormed out of the store to find the source of the instigator. I scanned over the bodies to find anyone who could've been responsible for this indignity, eventually concluding that it came from the dining area across the walkway.
Whoever was responsible was in for an earful and I was already structuring which of the offender's family members would be acceptable as fodder for stray words. As I approached, I found the tables were mostly empty save for one, which made my heart begin to drop as I met eyes with the only occupant. Suddenly, I was much less inclined to hurl insults.
“Oh, hi there!” Qitel called out in a sickly sweet tone. “Come, take a seat! We have much to discuss!”
The Exterminator clutched a bag of tree nuts in his claws, a pile of discarded shells already gathered on the table next to him. He grabbed another as I approached, effortlessly prying the shell in half between two claws and tossed the contents into his mouth. “Good protein, these,” he commented as I sat down.
“Must be for that good arm you've got there,” I mumbled. I caught sight of a couple of bags beneath his chair, seemingly from one of the tech stores contained within the center.
“Bah, it's guesswork. So how are you? I haven't heard from you since we worked together!”
“I was just spending time with a friend, shopping and enjoying my time off.”
“Your time off? Oh, am I interrupting something?”
His snide tone irked me, though now wasn’t the time for interjections. “You are, Qitel,” I replied with no shortage of vitriol in my tone. “But I see no harm in chatting for a bit.”
“Good, because I have some merchandise”- he reached into his belt pocket and deposited a couple of items onto the table -“and you’re just the person to look into it, human sympathizer.”
I drew a terse breath in shock, but my worries were quelled when I considered that if Qitel had the power to do anything about it, he would’ve done so instead of approaching me so discreetly. A glance down at the item on the table showed that he was presenting what looked to be a tracker as well as a personal drive. “Found in the garbage,” he told me.
“The guild resorts to dumpster diving when they already have such a bloated budget now?”
“No, featherbrain, I have decided to keep this for myself. These items were found together, sealed in a plastic pouch, and placed in a garbage bin. The city has bans against electronics being placed into public bins, and so I was curious why this wound up in there. Managed to get my coworker, a techie, to crack it open and…”
Qitel reached into his belt again, glowering at me with the same condescending gaze he’d given me when I first saw his face. He seemed to revel in digging for the item as slowly as possible to waste my time. Finally, he found whatever he was looking for and revealed it as a printed piece of paper, folded into eighths. The snobby yotul threw the unfurled paper on the table and rolled it toward me.
I craned my neck to look at the parchment, though I was immediately perplexed by the text on it; it appeared to be some sort of form, going by the boxes with words on the inside, followed by blank lines. “Found on the drive, here,” Qitel told me, jabbing a claw to the storage. “Translator shows it as Terran writing.”
Drawing my holopad from my satchel, I held it over the paper with the translator to get an understanding. Surely enough, the language on it came up positive as a variant of Terran writing and I was affirmed in it being a form of some sort based on the wording of the text. The boxes seemed like an odd sort of job application, asking for the typical name, contacts, and prior work experiences, but quickly took a strange turn as it began asking for where their home on Earth was prior to arrival, what family they had on Venlil Prime if any, and where they worked, implying that they were seeking individuals who were already employed.
I knew little about human employment methods, but I didn’t imagine that sourcing individuals from other jobs was the most efficient way to gain a workforce. Terran service industries already dotted the planet while many humans also found work in local environments. So what was the angle that the creator of this application was going for?
Most concerningly was that the paper had no insignia, identifying marks, or noted address to return the form to. “And where did you find it again?”
“In the garbage, alongside this intact tracker that was activated at the time of recovery. Y’know, when I was dumpster diving. Text on the document showed it was addressed to one ‘Choctaw Nexus’.”
“A pseudonym of some sort?”
“Clearly. Short sorting through the archives shows the first name traces back to the group out east - perhaps you've heard about them. How the name and the items we have here are connected is beyond my understanding, but-”
“Well, this has been an absolutely riveting discussion about your collection of trash, Qitel,” I told him as I stood up to leave. “But this really sounds like an issue to be resolved by your fellow guildsmen.”
The sound of another shell splitting rang out as I turned away.
“I'm not through talking with you, predator.”
The sting as a piece nailed me in the back of the head prompted me to whirl back around, sticking my beak in the insolent yotul's snout. “Perhaps you've forgotten, little man,” I cooed in an equally bittersweet tone to the one he gave me before. “The krakotl never had a problem with settling issues the old-fashioned way before the interview. Try me and find out why I'm in the line of work I am.”
“Oh, we wouldn't want that in such a"- he waved his paw to a group of passersby who had stopped to gawk at my display -”public forum. Please, contain yourself.”
I had to force the feathers on my back to settle and I raised my head away from him. “What else is it you wanted, then?”
“Well, I'd appreciate if you took this merchandise off my paws,” he told me as he brushed the electronics and printout toward me.
“Why would I do that?”
“Because you're closer to the humans than I'd ever care to be, and may be able to find out who this Choctaw Nexus is. Something about the package just feels… off. And I know when to trust my feelings. Besides, we both know that you know where Tac is, don't we?”
“I don't-”
“We have videographic evidence that you conspired with a human - of the aforementioned squatters, no less - and let the kid escape. You're not as sneaky as you think, and if we find this ‘Choctaw Nexus’ turns out to be a bad actor that can be traced back to them - and by extension, you - well, there’d be no talking down my boss from having you dealt with. By helping me find out who this is, you may yet be able to clear your name of any wrongdoing.”
I clenched my beak tightly to maintain a straight face. Qitel stood up with a flourish and discarded the bag he was carrying in a bin.
“See, the krakotl were never special for using threats and bullying to get results. It's because you were good at killing predators,” he jeered. “Now, if you don't mind, this primitive has appointments to attend to… old lady who got trampled courtesy of the humans and all. You stay out of trouble, Hileen, and stay in touch.”
The self-assured marsupial melded into the crowd in a matter of seconds, leaving me with a table containing dumpster trophies and a pile of shells. Reluctantly, I swept the shells into my wing and dumped them into the bin before gathering the other two items he'd left me and stuffing them into my bag. I'd been gone from Nampi long enough and she would notice my absence before long.
Crossing the walkway again, I could spot from where I stood that Nampi was indeed still in the Platinum Paw. I approached, and soon I found that while she didn't seem to have noticed me stepping away, she was definitely in a soured mood based on the sagging of her ears and tail. With my talons clacking on the floorboards, I hustled to her side and her mood chippered up ever so slightly as she heard me approach.
I chimed in, “Find anything?”
“Everything. I want everything, Red, and I can't decide on what I want. They all just look so great!”
From behind, a voice called out, “Nampi!”
We both jumped at the exclamation and turned about to spot the venlil lady I'd seen before spring from behind the shelf. The man poked his head from behind the shelf too, though less enthusiastically and with yet another bag in his clutches. My friend's eyes widened in surprise with her tail and ears perking up in kind. With a light in her eyes, she exclaimed, “Nalek!”
The two embraced with shrill squeals and laughter as Nalek's accompaniment and I traded awkward glances.
“It's been too long!”
“You never stayed in contact!”
The women exchanged giddy greetings and the pompous stranger turned to me, leering over me as though she was sizing me up.
“Who's your friend here?”
“Oh she's actually my-...”
Nampi paused for a moment, looking back to me.
“Yeah, she's a friend.”
“A friend,” Nalek repeated while her eyes flicked between Nampi and I. “Right.”
Somehow, I get the impression that that was judgemental.
“I'm Hileen, by the way,” I chirped, “if names are to be exchanged.”
“Hileen, that's a lovely name! And such plumage to match, it's a wonder you aren't swarmed by suitors!”
Internally, I groaned at the notion. The idea of being approached by someone to state their interest in me made me queasy, to say the least. Thankfully, I never had that issue growing up as most of the other drakes in school were too busy chasing girls who didn't have a lousy pigmentation mutation such as myself.
“I'm flattered,” I told Nalek before turning to the man whose name had yet to be introduced. “May we get your name?”
“Sask.”
His response was succinct and tonally flat, though there was a brief silence as I expected him to elaborate. Nalek's beads jingled as she lashed him on the calf with her tail.
“I'm Sask, Nalek's fiancée,” he added, throwing her a look to see if she was satisfied.
Nampi gasped with her paws over her snout. “Fiancée! Nalek, you're getting married and you never even told me!”
“Well, I felt a little guilty since it technically broke our pact we made when we were pups. You remember that?”
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I? ‘Let she who bonds through betrothal first be cast out unto the world for all to admonish her!’
Sask and I both gave inquisitive expressions. “You two spoke like that as pups?” Sask asked.
“Well, I'm paraphrasing,” Nampi admitted with a playful ear waggle. “But you get the gist.”
“Indeed, they do, sweet Nampi. Now, may I ask what you're doing bringing your avian friend here into this store on this fine claw?”
“Oh, no no, she's the one treating me! Isn't that right, Red?”
I saw her tail twitch and was sure it took restraint not to tickle my neck with it as we stood before her old friend.
“She's been a good friend,” I explained. “So I wanted to reverse the roles for once and treat her to something myself.”
Nampi skipped over to me and wrapped her arm around me, glancing back to her old friend. “See? We'd all be so lucky to have a… friend like her.”
“So I've witnessed. But perhaps you're a bit stuck, as I've seen you prancing up and down these aisles for a while, no? Maybe you don't know what you want?”
“Nalek, you know I've never been good about making my mind up.”
“Some things never change, you ditz. Tell you what: you and Sask go find us a seat and we can catch up all we'd like when we're not taking up aisle space, yes? So shoo! I'll help Hileen here pick one out for you!”
With a bored grunt, Sask made off with the goods he had strapped to himself, followed by Nampi who gave me one more playful tail flick before dashing off into the crowd. I looked back to the mottled snout of Nalek who watched her friend wander off with a wistful glance.
“She was my first, you know.”
“Your what now.”
“Love. Way back when we were growing from pups into young adults back in private education, we explored much together. We saw each other through a lot, including the less savory parts of finding a mate. When Nampi realized it wasn't the boys she was into, she turned to me, and I offered my hand as her stalwart companion… to a point.”
“You weren't interested in her the same way?”
“I'd grown up seeing her as a sister of sorts, so ultimately, when we split it off, we stayed close as friends and she never seemed to be bothered by it. She struggled to find others in school who had the same interests as herself, but she never fussed about it.”
Nalek's claws browsed over a set of pouched bandoliers made with intricate embroidering. “Have you two… spent the night together? Alone?”
Spiritually, I reeled from the inquiry. The whiplash from that question was equitable to being smacked by a human. “Wha- why? How's that pertinent to the subject at hand?”
“That sounds like a ‘yes’ to me,” she purred with a smug glance my way.
I didn't need to begin to list the different ways such a question was violating to our privacy, and yet this woman was treating it like a game.
“Not really your concern, ma'am.”
Nalek chuckled as she picked out one of the bandoliers and inspected it with her claws. “I'd like to think that she and I still have that old connection, despite everything. And to that end, I know that she's no slag and doesn't trust easy. To see her be so vulnerable around you and to talk so highly of someone who's clearly below her income level as a predator…”
She stretched the bandolier out to appreciate the design in its entirety.
“Well, that's something special. Here"- she foisted the accessory into my wings as I stood gobsmacked -"this just screams her name.”
“This is, like, double my budget.”
“Love don't come cheap, darling. You wanna see good things happen, sometimes you've gotta step out of your comfort zone and grasp for it!”
“I'm being lectured by a rich woman on finances.”
“It's a philosophy that goes beyond money, ‘Red.’ The humans have a saying, in their horrendously predatory nomenclature, that contains a kernel of truth: ‘you miss every shot you don't take’.”
Yep, that's definitely a human phrase.
Nalek's steely braid rattled with every flick of the tail as we proceeded through the checkout.
“You want things to change between you and her?” she continued. “Don't just wait for it to happen.”
She let the conversation rest there as we finished the purchase, possibly to let me recuperate mentally from the damage done to my account. Outside, we found our respective partners sitting at a table with Sask looking up in boredom as Nampi chatted away, though she immediately shut up and turned to me with excited flicks of her tail as she saw what I was carrying.
I held it toward her and she happily shot to her feet, effortlessly removing the tags with her claws and clipping it to her belt. Nalek clapped and waggled her tail as the giddy lady did a whirl about to let us admire the accessory. While I'd have preferred one with pockets to give it a more practical use, I decided to let Nalek have the victory as our mutual friend clearly enjoyed it.
The rest of the paw was a blur as the two friends chatted without end until Sask eventually reminded his betrothed that they had a schedule to attend to. Though Nalek offered to call us a taxi home as a gesture of kindness, I saw through her ruse to determine that she was trying to pull a fast one on me - the clever ear flick she gave as we boarded the automated vehicle sold it for me.
We sat in the seats as the vehicle took the express ride home.
Nampi cleared her throat before she spoke, “Thank you for taking some time to spend with me, I know you've had a lot less free time as of late.”
“It's a prison of my own design, if I must be honest. A feedback loop of working a job that doesn't guarantee a paycheck to pay for rent that keeps going up, and thus needing to work more.”
The venlil giggled and chided me, “You really should've stayed in university.”
“There's a lotta 'should haves’ that've led me to this point. No use wondering what could have been.”
“There's always a use for wondering what could have been, Hileen.”
She wrapped an arm around my shoulder.
“Every decision I make, I always wonder what I could've done differently that it'd have turned out better,” she explained as she waved her free paw to the sky. “It's how you grow as a person, Red.”
Her silky pelt felt heavenly in contrast to the chilly air from outside, making it hard to let her words sink in.
“You rich types seem chock full of philosophy. I wonder if I'll become a brooding orator when I get some cash to my name.”
The cab filled with laughter as we veered around the final corner to my neighborhood, as it was the closest stop. The door popped open accompanied by a chime from the drone, signaling for me to depart.
But before my talons could even hit the pavement, I felt Nampi's scrawny arms wrap around my waist and she let out a pitiful mewl again.
“You don't need to get off here,” she told me with a pouty expression. “We can spend the rest of the paw at my place.”
“I'd love it, but I need to water my plants and get the month's bills sorted before they're due. Again.”
One claw at a time, I plucked her paws from around my waist and the childish venlil conceded, giving me another ear waggle as I departed. “I'll see you tomorrow?” I asked her.
“If you still have eyes by then, then you can bet your ass!”
“I still don't gamble.”
“You'll come around to it eventually.”
I shut the door to the taxi and watched as it carted away the one venlil who I ever truly felt on the same wavelength as. Fiddling with the lock felt like more of a chore than usual at this time as I felt a little voice tugging at the back of my head.
You miss every shot you don't take.”
The lock felt jammed as I began to jiggle it more vigorously with the electric key. Either the RFID or NFC readers were messed up, as the lock refused to accept my key. I looked up and down the street, though Nampi was now long gone for me to rescind my earlier rejection.
Every decision I make, I wonder what I could've done differently.
The door rattled as I grew more and more infuriated with the lock. Qitel's smug expression as he threatened me so boldly in public played back in my head, and I wondered what would've happened had I decided to go through with insulting his mother. Better yet, I wondered what could've been had I not backed down in the face of his unflinching confidence.
Bzzt. The lock rejected my key again.
Raagh! You fucking useless hunk of junk!
I squawked in anger and kicked against the door, careless of the consequences of having Markol back down here to admonish another of his tenants for causing a ruckus. The walls were surprisingly sturdy for how ineffective the venlil architecture looked on the surface and I reeled back in pain as my leg throbbed.
Click.
I looked to my left to see that it wasn't my door that came open, but that of the twins. The door cracked open ever so slightly, no doubt nudged by the force of my tirade and I sighed. Nobody was expected to be home at this time, with Vili being away and Luka leaving early to get a head start.
Luka had been given a stern talking-to by the landlord for allowing one of those cats into his apartment through neglect, and I was disappointed that he seemed to have not learned his lesson this time. In fact, it seemed he hadn't even thought to lock the door this time.
I took it upon myself to shut the door for him before turning back to my own apartment door. Grasping the key with one talon, I turned it ever so gently, though the lock still refused to give in.
With a bit more force, the torsion applied to the key felt as though it should've snapped it by now. Markol sure didn't waste any expense for the security for this place, doubtlessly as a result of his history in electronic security, but I wished now that he had provided a way in that didn't rely on privately sourced locks.
Considering my options as I stood trapped outside, I realized that I had never gotten around to paying for a new lock for Tadi. I'd considered contacting her to inform her that Tac had made it out of town safely, but that'd involve also telling her that her son was now in the care of humans, as if that was a better outcome to her.
Stepping out front, I realized that there was one more option I hadn't considered: my window. I usually forgot to lock it after I was through letting air circulate and I was silently grateful to myself for this absentmindedness now more than ever. Sticking a foot on the threshold, I lifted myself in a way that'd allow me to have leverage to force the window open.
The window made me fight for every inch, but I felt a strange satisfaction as it slowly opened up into an entrance that I could squeeze my way through. I let out a sigh as my talons clicked against the cool floor and slid the window shut.
I laid my satchel on the couch and turned back to the door, ready to unleash my fury on the disobedient object. But as I reached for the lock to manually open the door, I noted that the lights on the RFID interface both flashed at once, blinking erratically. Red and green flickered without rhyme or reason, indicating that it was both active and inactive.
As pretty as the colors were, I now knew that Markol's locks were not as reliable as he had touted them about: typically, such would not occur unless the device was damaged deliberately, and yet nothing indicated that I'd had uninvited guests. One could pray that those cats didn't secretly know how to cobble together an ECM jammer, but my personal wager was on faulty equipment.
Settling in, I browsed my favorite soaps on the television. For what was intended to be a day of relaxation and show of affection for a friend, I found myself rather wound up over all the things that added up. Couples threw around flowery words and swooned over one another on screen as I felt the tension diffuse. My holopad rang and I turned it over to spot that Nampi was informing me that she'd arrived home safely.
>>> Feels empty here, all alone.
She made sure to drive the point home with a sticker of a venlil making a pouty expression.
Next time, I thought to myself, I'll get it right for you, Nampi.

  1. The One Above All (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.
  • Description: The supreme being in the Marvel Universe, often considered the representation of the creators (writers and artists). The One Above All has unlimited power and is the source of all life and reality in the Marvel multiverse.
2. The Presence (DC Comics):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.
  • Description: The ultimate creator and supreme being in the DC Universe. The Presence embodies the divine and is above all other deities and cosmic beings.
3. TOAA (One Above All) (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Absolute control over all existence in the Marvel multiverse.
  • Description: Similar to The One Above All but often shown more as an abstract entity that transcends all known dimensions and universes.
4. Azathoth (H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent, often described as the "blind idiot god."
  • Description: A cosmic entity of boundless power, considered the center of all chaos in the universe. Azathoth's mere existence drives the reality of Lovecraft's cosmos.
5. The Creator (Umineko no Naku Koro ni):
  • Power Level: Absolute control over all aspects of reality and fiction.
  • Description: A character from the visual novel series "Umineko no Naku Koro ni" who has the power to create and destroy universes at will.
6. The Beyonder (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Near-omnipotent and capable of altering reality on a multiversal scale.
  • Description: Originally depicted as an omnipotent being from beyond the Marvel multiverse, capable of feats such as destroying and creating entire universes.
7. Featherine Augustus Aurora (Umineko no Naku Koro ni):
  • Power Level: Essentially omnipotent within her meta-world.
  • Description: A powerful witch who can manipulate reality, time, and space, and rewrite entire narratives.
8. The Living Tribunal (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Nearly omnipotent, tasked with maintaining the balance of the multiverse.
  • Description: A cosmic entity that serves as the arbiter of disputes and protector of the multiverse.
These characters represent some of the highest levels of power in fiction, often possessing abilities that transcend conventional limits of strength, intelligence, and reality manipulation. Their feats and influence span entire universes, making them prime candidates for the title of "strongest character in all of fiction."

While Goku from the "Dragon Ball" series is one of the most powerful characters in anime and manga, he would not be able to defeat many of the characters listed. The reason primarily lies in the nature and scope of the powers these characters possess. Here’s an analysis of how Goku compares to each of the listed entities:
  1. The One Above All (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.
  • Description: As the supreme being of the Marvel Universe, The One Above All's power is infinite and absolute. Goku, despite his immense power, is not omnipotent and would be incapable of challenging a being of this magnitude.
2. The Presence (DC Comics):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.
  • Description: The Presence is the ultimate creator and supreme being in the DC Universe. Like The One Above All, The Presence's power is beyond comprehension and far exceeds anything Goku can achieve.
3. TOAA (One Above All) (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Absolute control over all existence in the Marvel multiverse.
  • Description: Similar to the previous One Above All, this entity's omnipotence would make Goku's power negligible.
4. Azathoth (H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos):
  • Power Level: Omnipotent and embodies cosmic chaos.
  • Description: Azathoth exists beyond all comprehension and reality itself. Goku's physical strength and energy attacks would be irrelevant against an entity that operates on a fundamentally different level of existence.
5. The Creator (Umineko no Naku Koro ni):
  • Power Level: Absolute control over all aspects of reality and fiction.
  • Description: The Creator can manipulate and rewrite entire universes. Goku's combat abilities and strength, no matter how advanced, are finite and would be ineffective against such overwhelming power.
6. The Beyonder (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Near-omnipotent and capable of altering reality on a multiversal scale.
  • Description: The Beyonder's reality-warping abilities and near-omnipotence would place him far beyond Goku's reach in terms of power.
7. Featherine Augustus Aurora (Umineko no Naku Koro ni):
  • Power Level: Essentially omnipotent within her meta-world.
  • Description: Featherine can manipulate reality, time, and space at will. Goku's strengths are purely physical and ki-based, making them irrelevant against someone who can control the very fabric of reality.
8. The Living Tribunal (Marvel Comics):
  • Power Level: Nearly omnipotent, tasked with maintaining the balance of the multiverse.
  • Description: The Living Tribunal's power to govern and balance the multiverse puts him on a level of authority and strength that Goku cannot contend with.
In conclusion, while Goku is a formidable warrior with incredible abilities, his powers are largely physical and energy-based, limited to the confines of his own universe's rules. The characters listed here possess powers that are fundamentally different and often operate on an omnipotent or near-omnipotent level, which makes them far beyond Goku’s ability to defeat.
https://preview.redd.it/3jd5du8kpg1d1.png?width=677&format=png&auto=webp&s=381641e52cf3ed50ed243833eb3cc342e92b114c
Assigning numerical power levels to these characters is inherently subjective and can vary greatly depending on the criteria used. However, for the sake of illustration, we can use a rough scale where Goku's power level in his strongest form (Ultra Instinct) is set as a baseline. Let's consider Goku's Ultra Instinct form to have a power level of 1,000,000. Here's a comparative scale:
Goku (Ultra Instinct): 1,000,000
  • Baseline for comparison.
1. The One Above All (Marvel Comics): Infinite
  • Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, beyond numerical representation.
2. The Presence (DC Comics): Infinite
  • Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, beyond numerical representation.
3. TOAA (One Above All) (Marvel Comics): Infinite
  • Absolute control over all existence in the Marvel multiverse, beyond numerical representation.
4. Azathoth (H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos): Infinite
  • An omnipotent entity embodying cosmic chaos, beyond numerical representation.
5. The Creator (Umineko no Naku Koro ni): Infinite
  • Absolute control over all aspects of reality and fiction, beyond numerical representation.
6. The Beyonder (Marvel Comics): 10,000,000,000+
  • Near-omnipotent, capable of altering reality on a multiversal scale.
7. Featherine Augustus Aurora (Umineko no Naku Koro ni): 10,000,000,000+
  • Essentially omnipotent within her meta-world, with reality, time, and space manipulation.\
8. The Living Tribunal (Marvel Comics): 10,000,000,000+
  • Nearly omnipotent, tasked with maintaining the balance of the multiverse.
These power levels are extremely rough approximations and serve only to illustrate the vast difference in scale between Goku and these omnipotent or near-omnipotent entities. Characters like The One Above All and The Presence are beyond numerical representation due to their nature as supreme beings with infinite power."

2024.05.19 23:42 DaisyAipom My thoughts on The Elder’s Quest blurb

I’m probably a little late to this since I only found out the title, cover and blurb had been released a few minutes ago, though I personally have mixed feelings about it.
I love that Leafstar and Tawnypelt are getting POVs, I was just thinking the other day about how we haven’t had a main series deputy or leader POV since TNP, and it’s gotten repetitive only seeing POVs from apprentices and young warriors- and boom, we finally get a leader and elder POV! I don’t really have any strong opinions on Leafstar and Tawnypelt, I feel neutral about them, but just overall having protagonists from a different age group and clan role than normal is a nice change to see. Leafstar going blind could be an interesting plot point too, I wonder if she’s losing her eyesight because of age or because of an injury she received in Star or Ivypool’s Heart (maybe she’ll get blinded in a battle?).
I really hope Moonpaw is Whistlepaw’s apprentice, it would be cool to finally get a main series Windclan POV, plus I’d like to see Whistlepaw more. I do think it’s more likely she’ll be a Sun x Night kit though, and I’d be fine with that too tbh since while it’s refreshing to see other clans’ POVs besides Thunderclan, to me Thunderclan feels like home. We’ve followed their journey throughout 7 arcs, we might as well continue- plus imo it’ll feel like something is missing if we go the entire arc without a single Thunderclan POV, especially if the next arc does have a Thunderclan POV, because then they’ll likely be a bunch of new cats and character development that happened offscreen. Thunderclan has always been a part (and often the center) of clan drama, if they just zipped out of there when trouble is coming it’ll feel a little out of character in a way, to me at least, like how Windclan used to be nice but then turned aggressive out of nowhere because of Onestar, and then suddenly dropped out of relevance with the new arcs. This may be an unpopular since I’ve seen a lot of people wanting Thunderclan to not have much pagetime/impact in Changing Skies- but I don’t want Thunderclan to drop out of relevance, especially if it’s sudden and without proper buildup.
Either way though, there’s lots of potential for character dynamics between the 3 protagonists, in every other arc the main protagnists are friends or siblings of around the same age, whereas in Changing Skies it‘ll be two older cats and one young cat. It’ll be interesting to see how that will that affect their group dynamic and how they work together.
Though only complaint I have so far about the main protagonists is how usually in arcs with an apprentice/young warrior protagonist, whenever they find out a conspiracy or get a sign from Starclan nobody believes them because they’re young and therefore don’t have as much experience or respect from the other warriors, and that slows the plot down because the protagonist is ostracized or has to go on a quest in secret- but now that we finally do get oldeclan leader protagonists, from the blurb it seems like they’ll still have to go on a quest in secret and deal with the clans mistrusting their judgement. I just want to see a leader or deputy protagonist actually respected by their clan and giving orders that will be followed, damnit!
For example, it was really cool seeing Firestar as respected leader in The Darkest Hour and leading the full might of Thunderclan against Tigerstar and the other villains instead of having to sneak around and keep secrets like he did in the earlier books, the cat was completely out of the bag now, everyone has the same amount of information, and Firestar could actually use his authority as leader to do something against the villains. This is something I’d like to see again, in the past few arcs none of the big decisions that affected all the clans were made by the protagonists, they had to tiptoe around the leaders and wait for them to make their decisions (which sometimes takes a long time), seeing a leader protagonist move the plot forward themselves instead of waiting for their superiors to make the decisions would be so refreshing to see. But turns out Leafstar’s clan is gonna doubt her instead of respecting her, which is a bummer. She’ll probably still have the authority of a leader and stuff so what I want to see could still happen, but I mean when Thunderclan doubted Squirrelflight’s leadership some of them didn’t follow her orders and the clan itself was not united at all, and what I want to see is a leader protagonist leading a united clan against a greater threat rather than the “civil war because of a controversial leader” plotline rehashed again.
Speaking of rehashing, basically everything about the blurb feels like it’s taken from either TNP or TBC. The Moonpool and the cats’ connection to Starclan being threatened? We saw that with Ashfur cutting off the clans’ connection to Starclan and the Moonpool being frozen. Twoleg construction encroaching on clan territory, with some of the leaders not taking it seriously or believing the protagonist? Been there, done that in TNP with the twolegs destroying the forest and Leopardstar and Blackstar not wanting to leave. An apprentice hearing a mysterious voice in her head, thinks she’s having visions, but then the voice becomes sinister? That’s basically Shadowsight and Frostpaw’s plotlines mashed together. It could be that the blurb is worse than the actual book (never judge a book by its cover blurb, right?) but I don’t know, if it’s one plot point being similar to another arc’s then that could be fine, but basically every plot point listed has already happened before. It gives off the vibes that the authors are getting lazy or running out of ideas.
Overall, while the contents of the blurb have been mostly disappointing to me, there are still new and unique things that could happen even with multiple rehashed plot points (such as how it seems like the protagonists will be trying to stop something that hasn’t happened yet rather than something that has already happened like in TBC) so I’m still holding out hope for a good arc. Tbh it feels like Changing Skies could either be the best arc so far, or the worst. It has lots of potential, especially with how the protagonists are different from the norm, but the writing of the plot is just as important as the distinctness of the characters, and if the plot flops I don’t know if even the best character writing could save it. I just hope the writers pull through and manage to make all the controversial elements work. 👍

2024.05.19 22:00 Zegasus I miss when the cats actually fought eachother

I miss the vibe of the first arc, when there was multiple skirmishes a book and there was less of this "friendship is magic" nonesnese. Why call it warrior cats if there's no war? Bring back little stuff like sunningrocks. I don't read these books for the clans to unite and work together all the time. Anyone else? I also hate the new code as well.

FAQ

I live in Cuba/Canada/Haiti/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now the great old ones have awaken!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on faith, trust and pixie dust, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

2024.05.19 19:49 StoneLuca97 Megazord Rating S1E1. (Dino) Megazord

Megazord Rating S1E1. (Dino) Megazord
Rating all PR series (Mega)zords (main team primary), Episode 1: (Dino) Megazord
Megazords are the core part of every Power Rangers series. Those colossal war machines came upon the heroes´ aid whenever their adversary enlarged themselves, often combining themselves into a large, humanoid warrior form. Now, not everyone Megazord has been created equal, some were stronger, had ranged abilities, could fly etc. Thus I decided to make a mini-fan series of me rating Megazords. Now, I have to put a disclaimer here: This rating is not meant to be universal or 100% objective. I understand that people have different opinions, and I am open to discussion. Now, since there are too many of them, I decided to split this series into multiple „seasons“, the first one consisting of the main team primary Megazords (AKA the first Zords every team gets at the start of the season, for this reason Shogun Megazord won´t be included in this season, as he´s more of a secondary/powerhouse Megazord than a Primary one)
I will rate separate aspect of every Megazord in the numbers ranging from 1-10, where 10 is the highest amd 1 lowest, and I will be rating:
  1. Appearance: Megazord generally have an aesthetic derived from their Sentai counterpart´s theme. Some of those work better than others, I will try to give an honest opinion not only on the Megazord as a whole, but on the component Zords as well. Note that I will be using only the main component, so I won´t be covering Auxillary Zords, at least not in this season
  2. Weaponry and abilities: Every Megazord needs something to fight the moster with. Now, most of the time it´s a sword, but sometimes, they can use pistols, axes, bare hands, and also a work equipment (Yes, DriveMax Megazord, I am looking at you). I will be also rating their abilities and finishers, how they work and how they look.
  3. Overall story impact: Like I said above, Megazords were a core part of every series, and while tey are mostly used to wrap up the episode, some of them went way deeper than just a thematized tanks and planes.
Now, with that being said, let´s begin with this bad boy
Go ahead, make your monster grow
The OG. The one. The Megazord. As a first of its kind to appear on Fox Kids back in the day, there was not really a need to differentiate it more, so he was called just the Megazord. Anyways when Rita decided it was time to escalate, Rangers called upon their prehistoric-themed companions to assist them in cutting down their opponent to size. To this very day, It is the most recognizable and marketable robot that everyone will instantly connect with those colored heroes. Now, what I could say about them?
  1. Appearance Megazord has a simple, yet perfectly workable design that meshes together pretty well. Excluding Sabertooth and Triceratops, one could not really distinguish the separate components of this beasty machine. It is clear, recognizable, and its head looks kind yet menacing. Overall a really nice looking megazord. That being said, however, I cannot leave it without a criticism, as it may look too bland for some. Still, a pretty solid 8/10
An iconic monster with (literally) earth-shattering power
Tyrannosaurus Zord is the main component that makes a head and torso of the Megazord. This titan was the bigest and strongest of the five, sometimes taking the enemy on by itself. When summoned, it rises from the ground, cracking it in the process. He can also weaponize the earth itself, by unleashing the roar that triggers a seismic activity. Also, despite the T-Rex being a more hunched in reality, the Tyrannosaurus stands upwards, for two reasons. 1) Suit actor was in there (duh) 2) back in the day, it was generally theorized the T-Rexes generally had an upright stance and slowly walked the Jurrasic jungles. This theory is long disproved, but was influental enough to justify Tyrannosaurus to stand up, and me giving it the slack. Overall, the Tyrannosaurus looks savage, threatening, and the coloring is simple, yet speak volumes. 9/10
\"For the last time, I am NOT a Mammoth!\"
Mastodon is one of the three non-dinosaur components of the Megazord, forming back and arms of the Megazord. By itself, it can blow a gust of a freezing cold air, that can disorient or freeze enemies in place. The head is used as a shield to block attack, and it retains its blowing power too. Almost any color goes well with black, so no arguments there. By itself looks really nice, basically on par with Tyrannosaurus, although a little chubbier. Coloring is not as powerful looking as on the Tyrannosaurus, but it is easier on eyes, my only complaint being the tusks not really standing out there, it could have a different color from a trunk. Thus, I give it 8/10
Tug-of-war champion of 1993
Triceratops. This Zord is the depiction of „more than meets the eye“ It looks unassuming at a first glance, as the only really movable part is the head and it moves on its treads. However, it hides a lot of surprises, for example. Grappling cables on its horns, or laser cannon on its tail. It also seems to have an insane torque, being able to hold back (and even pull) the monster by its horns. It is the perfect leg, and the transformation is simple. Blue and white is a nice color, looks pretty and modern. 7/10
What is the Zord equivalent of 'pspspsps'?
Sabertooth Tiger. Another leg part of the Megazord. All Dinozords look great. However, Sabertooth´s design is the messiest of them IMO. Maybe with the black legs it could work better, but I digress. Overall, a solid design, also having a tail cannon is a plus. When fighting alone, it was seen pouncing and biting the enemy, like a cat. The second fastest Zord there. 7/10
It´s a bird! No, it´s a plane! No, it´s a Pterosaur!
Pterodactyl. At first, I was about to slam it into the ground Lord Zedd style, but after a further consideration, I found out that the design actually works in favor if a Megazord. Now sure, the underside is really different, and during the transformation into either the tank mode or battle mode it´s not that noticeable, but Pterodactyl actually has a really underrated role, and that´s completing the design. Without it, the tank mode would seem incomplete and the battle mode would have a funny looking chest. Pterodactyl elevates the Megazord from being the Wheel of Fortune stand user to a real gym bro, also armoring it up in the process. Therefore, my final rating is 8/10. Still, not standing out that much, but if you look deeper, you´ll find the value. Also, having those laser cannons is always a plus
Overall design score: 7,8/10
2. Weaponry and abilities
Like I said, every (Mega)Zord has something that it uses for combat. Megazord is no exception. As the first one, it showed us it´s more than capable of deleting an enemy. Even though during its first fight with Goldar it did not show all of it abilities (Mainly because Goldar chickened out soon after Megazord whipped out its Power Sword), it still showed us being capable if taking a beating.
Megazord Tank Mode
-\"Enemy moving in that direction!\" -\"understood, removing that direction\"
Tank mode was the first combination that occured when all of Dinozords combined together, sporting not only those twin massive cannons. But also eye lasers that acted as a secondary weapon. Mastodon´s head worked nice as an extra armor, and Megazord Tank mode also boasted one of the heaviest firepower readily available to Power Rangers. The only downside was the lack of mobility and a lack of the close combat capability. Which brings us to
\"MEGAZORD SEQUENCE HAS BEEN INITIATED!\"
Everybody knows that Rangers mean bussines when this fella shows up. This imposing figure has spelt doom for many monsters, which fell to the full strike of its mighty Power Sword, often blowing up in spectacular ways. While kinda clunky during the combat, it still was able to hold its own, pummeling the opponent with its fists before summoning the sword, giving us the eyegasmic view of the crimson slash, powered up by the lighting itself
POV: You have lost
Also, while diminished in its ranged combat abilities, it doesn´t mean it does not have any. Actually, it has one, and pretty devastating at that, called Cranial laser. It´s a shame it was only used a few times, as it looked as potent, if not more as the slashing finisher Megazord often employed
Move aside, Jimmy Neutron, this is the real Brain blast!
Megazord has also a self-defense weapons, the cannons on his back can be used to deter enemies when on the ground
Surprise, Astro boy style
Also, I cannot forged the Mastodon shield, which, although used even less than the Cranial Laser, also proved effective enough as a defensive/utility tool
\"Did they mean this, when they told me to \"use my head\"?
Overall, Megazord´s abilities were simple, yet solid. Even though, sometimes, they were inadequate to the task, which ultimately resulted in its downfall with its battle against the Pirantished, who, together with Lord Zedd, damaged the Dinozords so severely Zordon had to remodel them into the new, stronger, better(?) Thunderzords. Someone says the Beauty lies in the simplicity. I agree. They are not Yu-Gi-Oh levels of complicated, but they´re flashy enough to be instantly recognized and hailed as abilities of a true war machine. The only thing are the flashing effects, which I think might be detrimental (Those who know the incindent from the Pokémon episode „Robotic soldier Porygon“ know what I am talking about). My final rating for Megazord´s abilities is 8/10
3. Overall Story impact
Now, despite being treated as a simple machines of wart, the Zords obviously meant a lot for the Rangers, and they connected with them quickly through the Grid (As Billy commented, „It´s like a second nature to me“), quickly recognizing their capabilities, abilities, and also limitations, Their growing experience and battle prowess also showing during their final confrontation. Also, it was a huge humbling experience, as, when Rangers broke Zordon´s rule „never escalate the fight against Rita unless she starts“, it resulted in their downfall and near destruction. It also taught Rangers to work as a team, with each Ranger controlling the different systems of the Megazord. One could compare it to our first ride on a bycicle, and as many would agree with me, this is the experience nobody´ll ever forget and that helps us during our future endeavors. **9/10**
My final rating of the Megazord is then 8,2/10
You can never go wrong with the classics, and Megazord was definitely the one setting the standard there. Simple, yet effective, not afraid to throw hands, or lighting for that matter. It was obvious Rita and Zedd wanted it to be gone, as it was singlehandednly a foil to their plans for quite a long time

2024.05.19 19:07 YourKnightForHire [M4F] Looking for a longterm partner for a fantasy adventure story!

Hey there, I'm Knight(21M) and as the title states I'm looking to start up a longterm fantasy adventure rp with someone! I've been RPing for nearly 10 years now at this point, having gotten my start in Warrior Cats forums back in the day and then found myself in the TTRPG community and have branched from there. I don't have any specific plots in mind, as I love to story/world build alongside a roleplay partner so that we both are getting what we want out of a roleplay in all respects. I'm very interested in romance rp, be it wholesome, slowburn, Enemies to Lovers, Love at First Sight, what have you, though I do admit that rivalry slowburn is my favorite. I'm really only interested in OCxOC pairings, no hate to CC enjoyers ofc. With those basics out of the way, time to get into what I hope to provide, what I'm looking for, and maybe some common interests that could be relevant to a rp but likely will just be used to nerd out about OOC.
A bit about me and what I hope to provide:
  1. I'd consider myself literate and always shoot for at LEAST a paragraph in my responses, but often shoot for two or three as a standard post. Of course this can deviate to be even more depending on the scene, and I highly doubt anything could ever make me write less than 3 sentences.
  2. I'm very flexible with schedules! Currently(though certainly not permanently) I don't have much going on myself, so I'm capable of responding at most times throughout the day.
  3. I'd also consider myself to be a friendly person. I love OOC talks, sharing memes, and just general social interaction.
What I'm looking for in a partner:
  1. (This one is a nice to have, not a requirement) I really prefer to rp with folks inside my age range(20-25 or so). Since I like to interact outside of rp, I find it more enjoyable to do so with folks closer to my age. (This is a requirement) I do not have any interest roleplaying with minors.
  2. I'd really appreciate Semi-lit to Literacy. I don't mind if you're not super into multi-paragraph posts, but I can't really get invested with one liners.
  3. Honesty! In my experience as a roleplayer, the most successful rps are those where both parties are honest every step of the way. Didn't like an interaction, things aren't going the way you want them to, even something small like you're not a fan of a character reference? Please do not hesitate to let me know! I truly respect criticism and honest requests.
  4. Uses either human-made art or written descriptions for muse refs! AI art is unappealing(not to mention immoral) to me, and I'm not really comfortable using real people as references.(Actor claims are ok alongside a description or reference!)
Some sources/media/etc I'm interested in:
  1. Overwatch 2(I can not stand blizzard. I am unfortunately addicted to playing tank. This likely won't be relevant to any rp I'm interested in, but I would love to be able to complain about it w someone)
  2. DND/PathfindeTTRPGs/Baldurs Gate 3
  3. FFXIV(I am not completely current yet, but I'm about a quarter way through endwalker at the moment!)
  4. Dark Souls 3/Elden Ring/Niche Lore from the Souls Series
  5. Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans
  6. Game of Thrones(I have not read the books, something I really need to fix)
  7. Warhammer Fantasy/40k(but in like... the "THE INDOMINITABLE HUMAN SPIRIT!" way, not the "Ermmmm.... acskually, you can't do/have [reasonable fantasy request] because [random side note in a magazine published 20 years ago]" way.)
  8. And a long list of other fantasy adjacent content! Please feel free to bring up anything you're interested in, maybe I've heard of it, maybe I even forgot to list it here, either way I love to talk with people about their interests!
If you feel like we could be a good fit as rp partners, please do not hesitate to send me a chat! I'd love to chat with you about getting a story up and running.

2024.05.19 18:04 Think_Lengthiness_84 I haven't found the answer to these questions

  1. How to discern one's genuine emotions? I have come to notice that most of my emotions, apart from laughter or fear, seem unnatural or deliberate to me. Often, I observe a glaring display of artificiality in these emotions when I feel discomfort or internal irritation during their expression. It's as if I speak from someone else's perspective, unable to remove this facade until I find myself in a comfortable setting alone. Behaving naturally around people is indeed quite challenging. I have long observed that my brain seems to be divided into an "emotional brain" and an "intellectual brain" or something along those lines. I often converse with my "second part" and it feels as if I am talking to another person (albeit without any discomfort at all). During one of my sensory overloads, I remembered the moment when my "second part" spontaneously recalled and shared with me some significant aspects that I cannot describe in a few words, but it really helped me back then. My imagination is highly developed, so reading Warrior Cats, maintaining my characters in my mind with a separate folder dedicated to arts in the gallery, almost felt like watching a movie. Returning to the question, could my ability to freely fantasize and skillfully deceive shift my true personality so much that my artificial emotions almost feel real? How can one discern this apart from physical sensations?
  2. I suspect that I am also a bearer of Pathological Avoidance of Demands, a trait common in individuals with ASD. However, there are occasional moments when I react calmly to a request. I have not yet delved into this topic sufficiently, but in my quest for answers, I have found nothing yet.
  3. Based on point 1, I find it difficult to determine whether I am suppressing my emotions or indeed not feeling them as strongly. I have always been regarded as an extremely calm individual, yet sensory overload has often occurred to me. I have a very high pain threshold and can suppress myself when feeling stressed in order to remain composed. I am more inclined to doubt that I may have alexithymia, but I am also curious whether memorizing emotional reactions can hide this trait. Are there more precise characteristics by which one can distinguish alexithymia from low emotional expressiveness?
  4. Fatigue and ennui. There are often moments when I feel a certain emptiness inside myself (which, along with a number of other criteria, I have long suspected to be Quiet BPD), without even the desire to interact with my special interests in any way. In other words, I quickly tire of any activity and start to feel bored, as if I have been squeezed like a lemon. I must say that I do not fit under any criteria for ADHD (or, at least, have not noticed such until now).
  5. Returning to points 1 and 3, I have always found social restrictions such as "you cannot joke about a deceased person, it is inappropriate," "you cannot wear furry-cat-ears in public, it is weird," to be incomprehensible. These constant reminders of "strangeness" later turned into my indecision, when I wanted to do what I wanted, not because of society's opinion, but because I would experience stress due to undue attention from others. I do not understand why something is considered bad. I have viewed things from a philosophical perspective all my life and have seen both the positives and negatives in everything, but I have not considered certain things absolutely bad/unacceptable. Oftentimes, I did not understand why my questions or statements were seen as rude/personal.
  6. Stress from emotions, not events. I have noticed that when I was scolded or someone passed away, I experienced stress from the sounds and emotions of people, while the event itself felt completely mundane. Oftentimes, music helped me to experience the "appropriate" emotions. If I do not have music and the right "atmosphere," I will not be able to feel certain emotions to a sufficient degree or at all.
Please share your experiences/knowledge, I would be very grateful and also, I think it would be useful for people who are also looking for answers to similar questions!

Winterfell
The first episode of the final season begins, echoing the atmosphere of Robert Baratheon's arrival at Winterfell in the series' premiere. What a lazy screenwriting move for fan service. Jon discovers the secret about his mother and his heritage, in front of his father's crypt. Ned Stark's promise was fulfilled, a stroke of luck for D&D.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Then comes episode 2, where the heroes discuss future stakes, preparing for the Long Night, and what comes after the battle if it happens. Jon reveals the secret to Daenerys, who doesn't seem pleased to hear it. In short, nothing happens in this episode, it's boring.
"All my life, I've known one goal: the Iron Throne. Taking it back from the people who destroyed my family, and almost destroyed yours. My war was against them. Until I met Jon. Now I'm here, half a world away, fighting Jon's war alongside him. Tell me, who manipulated whom ?"

The Long Night
Finally, the famous battle of the Long Night. We just see the Dothraki charging with flaming swords into the darkness, and then nothing. Everything is dark. We can't see anything. Maybe Daenerys at some point tries to roast the Night King, but it's unclear. Everything is black, everything is darkness and gloom.
"- I'm going now.
- Go where ?"

"Nymeria, it's me, Arya. I'm heading north, girl. Back to Winterfell, I'm finally going home."
The Last of the Starks
After the credits, Jon Snow is giving a heartfelt speech for the fallen in the battle. Since we didn't see anything I suppose they won, probably because Jon finally killed the Night King and they are celebrating, but Daenerys is visibly disappointed that Arya is the hero of Winterfell, and she's upset that Jon refuses to cuddle with her because of the secret. She doesn't want Jon to talk about the secret because she doesn't want people to know they're engaging in incestuous cuddles. I think.
"Even if the truth destroys us ?"

Anyway, it's very disappointing that the war against the zombies is already over; we should have had a whole season of the Long Night, in darkness and gloom, with an episode solely focused on strategy and the use of trebuchets. And then, when the heroes finally set out to take down Cersei, Daenerys falls into a lame, obvious, and avoidable ambush. Rhaegal dies stupidly, and Missandei is captured, then executed. Tyrion fails to save her, Cersei wins the final Lannister duel, and she angers the Dragon Queen enough to push her over the edge. In short, all of this was rushed and poorly written, nothing makes sense, I am shocked and angry. It's unfair. It's not right.
"If you want justice, you've come to the wrong place."

The penultimate episode of the series begins with a letter. Varys wants to inform that Jon is the heir to the throne; he betrays the queen. In mourning, with Tyrion, Daenerys only talks about the secret about Jon. It's the end, Act V of the play, the young tragic princess is lost, and the comedic archetype can't help her, it's too late, it doesn't matter now.
"- Yes, she trusts you. She trusted you to spread secrets that could destroy your own queen. And you did not let her down.
- If I have failed you, my queen, forgive me. Our intentions were good. We wanted what you want. A better world, all of us. Varys as much as anyone. But it doesn’t matter now.
- No. It doesn’t matter now."
An extremely poorly written dialogue, obviously, probably one of the worst-written dialogues in the history of theater, cinema, and television. In my opinion, far too convoluted and boring, far too tragic for a TV series.
https://preview.redd.it/uo5f4s43jd1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=4757e00b2c3f01680bca09125dc998be02af7196
Then the Unsullied come to arrest Varys, and he is sentenced to death.

  • Cersei should have won the battle; she had the scorpions, the Iron Fleet, and the Golden Company, and it was the logical continuation from the end of episode 4. However, it's worth mentioning that she had no elephants, which undoubtedly tipped the battle in favor of Daenerys and her dragon.
"I am not your little princess. I am Daenerys Stormborn of the blood of Old Valyria, and I will take what is mine. With fire and blood, I will take it."
  • Daenerys goes mad in two seconds. She has defeated Cersei, the bells signal the end of the battle, she must decide how to deal with the final obstacle, the last step before the throne. So she kills the people who love Jon Snow and who don't love her, all because she wants to secretly kiss Jon. All these seasons, adventures, battles, endless moral dilemmas over ten years, all for it to end with a simple tragic love triangle. Truly, probably the worst episode of the saga and of history, so rushed and poorly written; everyone knows that characters must go mad talking to themselves in front of a mirror, not silently in a realistic and brutal way, otherwise the viewer is confused and lost outside their comfort zone.
"I don't want to be his queen. I want to go home."
https://preview.redd.it/zmehvnu0md1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d1fe51dec443496ded16e9ac3e15c7a812be39f0
"The things I do for love."
  • Jaime reuniting with Cersei is probably the worst conclusion for these two characters. The writers clearly didn’t understand their own story. Jaime's arc was about redemption, like Theon, exactly the same. The fact that Brienne fills the White Book of the Kingsguard with the line "Died protecting his queen." the most honorable death for a Kingsguard commander, doesn't matter, it's fanservice, lazy writing. Jaime should have stayed in the North and made baby Jaimes with Brienne. Jaime was supposed to save the world, not save Cersei. It's so sad; they only think about themselves and their children, Jaime and Cersei, nothing else matters.
"Nothing else matters. Only us."

"When you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die. There is no middle ground."
  • Jon is useless; he can't do anything, and yet, all this chaos is his fault too. Daenerys had told him not to tell others his secret. Jon understands nothing, he knows nothing, and so do we, immersed in the chaos and ignorance along with the inhabitants of King's Landing. It should have been an epic and glorious battle. War must be epic and glorious. We wanted epic, glorious fire and blood, not fire bloody and burning blood. It should have been a spectacle, not a terrible massacre. Is war despicable and out of control ? We wanted elephants, not dead children.
"It's your choice."

"You know what’s wrong with honor ?"
  • Euron Greyjoy is unbearable, as usual. It's as if they designed this character specifically to annoy us. He has no place in this story; he's just obnoxious. He destroyed Daenerys and Jaime, and he didn't deserve that honor. He's far too arrogant and not funny at all.
"If you think this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention."
https://preview.redd.it/lrs1bxftkd1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=b310d8131ca0607b5e54c47d90ed8ce580f4afe3
"Fire !"
  • The fight between The Hound and The Mountain is great. Finally, something perfect in this episode. The Frankenstein's monster rebelling and destroying his creator in a fit of rage, Sandor Clegane finally getting his revenge, Cersei walking by indifferently. It was epic, glorious, and hilarious. There's even light breaking through the crumbling wall at the end, showing the way out and the solution for Sandor, just like in a Zelda game. Very straightforward, no questions left unanswered, no mystery.
"Sandor. Thank you."

"Go home, girl."
  • Arya overuses the hero's shield in this episode. She says goodbye to Clegane, who tells her to go home, and then the apocalypse descends on her. She gets hit by falling debris in the streets, trampled by the crowd, the bell tower collapses on her... yet she gets up each time after a black screen and the sound of a cannon. She's just meters away from the devastation and the dragon's fire, close to the terrified and helpless citizens like her, and despite the piercing, chilling violins of death, she rises again, amid the embers and ruins. The little girl and her mother are burned, turned into statues of ash breaking in the wind, while Arya and a mysterious white horse survive the end times and emerge from hell together. Unless Arya is a cat with nine lives, all of this is just plot armor, it makes no sense.
"There is only one god and his name is Death, and there is only one thing we say to Death: 'Not today.'"

"There's plenty of pious sons of bitches who think they know the word of god or gods. I don’t. I don’t even know their real names. Maybe it is the Seven. Or maybe it’s the old gods. Or maybe it’s the Lord of Light. Or maybe they’re all the same fucking thing. I don’t know. What matters, I believe, is that there’s something greater than us."
The Iron Throne

The last episode, after the bells. So this is how it ends. Daenerys has triumphed, Tyrion has realized his mistake, is imprisoned again, and makes Jon understand in one final conversation that he must choose, between his sisters and Dany, between the Starks and the Targaryens, between love and duty. It's all so tragic. Daenerys finally came home, the legend has triumphed, the dream has become reality. And then the prince steps forward, still plagued by doubt, imploring the young princess to cease her quest for power, to forgive. And Dany's words have meaning, echoing those Tyrion spoke to Jon. The fallen hero then understands that he cannot save both the world and the princess. The long tirades echo high in the halls of the kings who are gone, and the fallen hero murders his lover, not out of ambition for the throne, not out of anger or vengeance, but out of love for his sisters and the people. The tyrant is dead, sadly concluding the dramatic journey of a young innocent orphan that no hero could manage to save.
"When I was a girl, my brother told me it was made with one thousand swords from Aegon's fallen enemies. What do one thousand look like in the mind of a little girl who can't count to twenty ? I imagined a mountain of swords too high to climb. So many fallen enemies, you could only see the soles of Aegon's feet."
https://preview.redd.it/vi818cdw0e1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=f4732894d0f9b43b9bae3629cc102fb25abfda69
Jon left the throne empty, accepting his judgment and the punishment of the dragon. Thus were extinguished the last Targaryens, in front of the object of all conflicts, high under the sky, above mortals, together. But Jon has a hero's shield too, so I imagine there's a chip scratching Drogon behind a wing, and thus he misses his shot and destroys the walls. And then the chip jumps onto the throne, so Drogon destroys the throne and the chip but he was too tired for Jon afterwards. Such lazy writing, utterly senseless, just for the symbolism of the dragon destroying the throne, the object of all the passions and dramas of this world, a satire of power and conclusion of the story.
"I told you it's difficult to explain."
Obvious fanservice, nothing complex or mysterious. But we don't know where Drogon is taking Daenerys, she has no mortal tomb. The mystery completes the legend, this girl was a shooting star until the end.
"I have been sold like a broodmare. I’ve been chained and betrayed, raped and defiled. Do you know what kept me standing through all those years in exile ? Faith. Not in any gods, not in myths and legends, in myself. In Daenerys Targaryen."
https://preview.redd.it/s3jmmuohzd1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=4007c56afdc01347bcc0770f9e7618b07eee3073
And to conclude, the council scene, a calm yet very rushed and poorly written moment, as everyone knows. It's certainly officially announced by professionals somewhere. Once again, the creators understood nothing about the story and the audience's expectations.
Nothing funny, nothing complicated, nothing secretive, but the worst part is Bran's choice, it's not good, it's illegal, he cheated.
Then the beautiful visuals, the surviving Starks, and Ramin Djawadi's magnificent music for the last five minutes and the final credits, pure happy ending, pure fanservice, it's an absolute failure, the worst series finale in history, it's obviously a dox..., sorry, a well-known consensus. It's all a mix of fan service, bad writing, and being rushed, extremely well-balanced. GRRM would certainly have wanted at least three more seasons to properly tell the final scene between Jon and Daenerys.
So much wasted potential, D&D sacrificed the ending of the greatest series in history for Star Wars contracts they didn't even get. It's a scandal. Thankfully, no one talks about GoT anymore since that ending, except to reminisce about the golden age of season 4 and the seasons before.
Everyone agrees, it's a fact. It is known. GoT's ending is a beautiful disaster.
...
"- It's a long story.

...
"Be with me. Build the new world with me. This is our reason. It has been from the beginning since you were a little boy with a bastard's name and I was a little girl who couldn't count to twenty.
We do it together. We break the wheel together."

2024.05.19 17:08 Tasty-Test2344 First ever MAP you saw that sucked you in? Any favorites? What got you into the fandom?

I’ll go first. It’s me Halloween Dark Forest MAP by FISHSOCKS is my favorite. It made me even more curious to see who else ended up in the dark forest. Mapleshade is my favorite villain and her story was so dark and I just couldn’t stop reading it over and over. I love horror and I definitely feel that the Dark Forest is pretty much hell in the Warrior Cats series. I definitely need to read the series again so I can finally get caught up.

2024.05.19 17:04 anshleypatio I rejected IIM B, L, K, I, XLRI and more

Yes, you read it right. I got a few admits and I will not be joining any of the colleges. Will be dropping MBA in general, as I have other plans. But, as I bid this community goodbye, wanted to give back in any tiny way possible.
P.S. Do not expect to see anything new here, and feel free to ignore!
Profile; GEM 9/9/9 - T10 Engg college, Work ex: 3yrs, CAT: 99.5X, XAT: 99.2X
I had registered for CAT on the very last day, with absolutely no idea of what the exam is, or if I am even planning for an MBA. As November came closer, I decided to give it a shot as an MBA would be something that suits me. I looked around to ask friends in IIMs on how to prepare with 15-20 days to go. Everyone had different strategies so I sat down to find some material. Everything seemed vague until I started checking out previous-year papers. (I personally have given 2 mocks, and solved all slots '19-'22). The patterns that evolved over the past decade, the most likely pattern for this year, and figured how I have around 1.5 mins per question to reach a rough score of 100. (I decided upon this as the fair average to be in the top 0.1/0.2 percentile based on results from '21-'24) While I state this simply, I did go through a lot of videos from creators, to Quora, to this very subreddit to get my information. And I must say that the first-hand accounts from here helped me all along.
Remember; CAT is strategy first, ability second kind of exam. I will keep different disparities out of this post, but would ask everyone to see this being based on bucketing. Yes, your gender, category, school-marks, UG field, all matter, but then don't think the entire pool is your competition. The percentile system makes one think like that, but it isn't the case. The competition is WITHIN your own bucket, find the scoring needed there. That math will go a long way and will keep you away from unnecessary excuses and debates.
General strategies:
- set an ideal score in mind, everyone would want highest possible but set a realistic number in mind. Aim should be to score equal in all section. Give mocks/prev year papers, find weakest section, compensate for loss there by gain elsewhere. - if strong in VARC, practice completing whole thing in 40mins (whatever the section time is), else tackle in order of strongest module first (RC/ordering/summarising/fill sentence). - in QA, put a hard limit of 1.5-2 mins per question when practicing. Choose only the sections/problems you are comfortable with, learn to solve them in the exam constraints first. There is no need to know everything, this isn't boards. - in DILR, know that 1/4 is enough, 2/4 is good, 3/4 and you can afford huge mistakes in VA/QA, but being able to solve 3/4 probably means you are very strong at reading and math, so no need to think here.
I went on to give my CAT, and post that is when I got involved here the most. I was active when this community had 14k~ members, so it has grown significantly, in ways good and bad. But that's not the point. There are all kinds of people here, and therefore you should be able to find whatever you need amidst all the noise.
I had applied for top 10ish colleges based on my personal suitability (+All checkboxes in CAT form ). Adding links to their interview experiences/transcripts here;
IIM A, C, FMS - NO call [A and B have non-public criteria, but generally B has more weightage to experience, while A has for diversity. C and especially FMS need raw marks in CAT]
SPJIMR - my first interview experience, got kicked out of round 1 IIM K - admit XLRI BM - admit IIM B - PGP + PGPBA admit IIM I - admit IIT B - waitlist in 20s but opted out to not block seat IIM L - admit IIFT - will probably get IIM Mumbai, IIM Shillong, XLRI HM, IIT Delhi - filled interview forms but didn't attend All other IIMs - skipped entirely
I cannot give any specific advice on interviews as things to work upon vary greatly from person to person. You can go through the above links, and ask questions if any, I will try to answer them.
I hope this post is of help, And all the best for your plans!
Edit: Since a lot of you are asking about my plans; I left it out to not deviate from the context. But here goes nothing, So I was never interested in the monetary aspect of MBA, placements/corporate life etc, since I earned enough. I wanted to enter business/entrepreneurship so incubators and possible networking with similar people were my criteria, but as you see these gains are subjective, unlike objective goals like others would have. And, to cough up that much money and time seemed unfavourable at the moment. So chose an alternative that was available to me, join a pre-seed startup and learn through practical experience. There is nothing to say what's better tbh, and its been hard convincing myself or close people, but there's always the option of coming back to MBA if needed. Hope that quenches your curiosity!
