SOLVED::::
Hello, I need some help with a difficult initial value problem. It was in my last math assignment and I thought I got it right but I was marked wrong. It was like this:
x * (dy/dx) + 5y = 9y2, with y(1) = -1
It said to find y in terms of x. My first step was to move the 5y over and then multiply both sides by dx.
x * dy = (9y2 - 5y)dx.
Next I divided over the x and divided over the y terms in the bracket.
(1/(9y2 - 5y)) * dy = 1/x * dx
Before integrating I switched around the terms and flipped the equation. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this. EDIT: I WAS NOT. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM.
1/y * dy = (1/(9x2 - 5x)) * dx
Now integrate:
lny = (1/(9x2 - 5x)) dx
1/y is obvious, but the second I had to do partial fraction decomposition.
1/(9x2 - 5x) = 1/x(9x - 5) = A/x + B/(9x - 5)
therefore 1 = A(9x -5) + Bx
Letting x = 0 I found 1 = -5A, A = -1/5
Then letting x = 1 I found B = 9/5
So,
lny = (1/(9x2 - 5x)) dx
lny = (-1/5)(1/x) + (9/5)*(1/(9x - 5)) dx
Break them up to make them nicer:
lny = (9/5)1/(9x - 5) dx - (1/5)(1/x) dx
That gives:
lny = (9/5)(1/9)ln9x - 5 - (1/5)lnx +C
I can factor out 1/5 to give one whole term
lny = (1/5)[ln9x - 5 - lnx] +C
then I raise everything to the e to get rid of the ln
elny = e(1/5[ln9x - 5 - lnx] +C)
I separate the C from the rest to get the rest to be 1 multiple term.
y = e(1/5[ln9x - 5 - lnx])ec
I remove the 1/5 power from the first e by factoring it out
y = [e\ln9x - 5 - lnx])](1/5) * ec
I use log rules to put the two ln powers together
y = [e\ln(9x - 5)/x)](1/5) * ec
Then I can cancel out the e and ln to get that rational on its own
y = ((9x - 5)/x)(1/5) * ec
This is the simplest form I can get it to. From here I need to solve for c by plugging in that when x = 1, y = -1.
-1 = 4(1/5) * ec
Move them over;
ec = -1/4(1/5)
But that's impossible, because e is never negative no matter what power is applied to it. And here lies my conundrum. I've gone wrong somewhere but I don't know where.
On mobius it says that the correct answer is this:
-5/(14*x^5-9)
but I'm not certain how to interpret that because mobius doesn't like using brackets.
Thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT: FOUND THE PROBLEM. I was not allowed to switch the variables around. Leaving the variables the same it is eventually possible to solve for y properly.

Hello, I have some lines like this in my code. This is part of a process which creates rows in a DB based on an input Excel file and other info from the DB. My boss wants the calculation of these final fields to be very flexible so formulas for some of them are stored on the DB as C# scripts.

The problem is that when using a real input file, this code runs 4 times for each of the 38k rows in the input file. And, apparently, each time you run Evaluate on a CSharpScript it creates a process that then is not disposed of. This is causing memory to balloon a crazy amount until I get an out of memory error.
I've seen a lot of other people mention this issue online but can't find any solutions. I found one fairly complicated one here but this doesn't seem to allow passing parameters to the script (my row variable) which I need to be able to do.
EDIT: I ended up using DynamicExpresso instead of Roslyn. Not only did it solve my issue, it's also easier to use and my program runs insanely faster. Like, it used to take over an hour to run, and it just finished in about 10 minutes. I can't believe this library didn't come up when I was searching for how to run dynamic scripts in C#

The imperial guard aimed at the first terrorist and used their kinetic weapons, landing four shots on the chest and head of the bird.
The Emperor however does not move, and I tilt my head in confusion as I notice the imperial guards are not blocking the emperor. He kneels and places his hand on the wound, as the governor’s blood slowly pools on the ground.
“Send a medic, quickly!”, shouts the Emperor in an authoritative tone. We look around confused, as we did not anticipate such a thing as terrorism on our planet, but we quickly realise he was speaking to the other humans, and shortly after, two humans dressed in green come out with a stretcher and a bag full of stims.
“Take him to the shuttle and take care of him”, ordered Augustus, unbothered by the violent chaos around him, “and you lot, take cover in the shuttle as well.”
We didn’t need another word to comply, but my curiosity couldn’t be contained. Why was this human, who was so important to the Terran empire, not taking cover or running away? He was one of the most important people in the galaxy. I stay behind as I enter the shuttle to glean the bloodbath outside.

“I have a question for you Picapao. Who sent you?”
“We will not tell you anything. Your little imperial guard will have to kill us, as we have no intention of being imprisoned.”
The emperor nodded, sniffing, his eyebrows raised slightly.
“I respect that. You have ideals. Standards”, the human turned away from them and faced the shuttle, his eyes locked on mine. They were sharp and cold. Calculating. The true self of humanity did not replace the once warm presence. The apex predator persona had awoken.
“I believe it was Thucydides, a human of an age long past, who once said -The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting by fools.”
He revealed a bracelet, which glinted in the sunlight. It appeared metallic in the distance, but liquid at the same time.
“With me as emperor, Humanity has embraced this motto. But I go further. I believe that the rulers should be as prepared to die for their subjects, as the subjects are for their ruler”
The bracelet started to glow, morphing into a sword in a fraction of a second. The sword was silvery with a similar pattern of golden embroidery along its blade.
Why would the leader of such an advanced race be using such an antiquated weapon?
“Your enemy will not be my guards, but rather it shall be me. If you kill me, you shall return to Kloaria, being acclaimed as heroes”, the emperor said, turning to face the avians, “but if I defeat you, you shall tell me who else was involved, as the sector governor Elder Prin could have died thanks to your actions. And if you don’t, then the Senate and People of Terra shall have no choice but to consider Kloaria a bastion of hostile powers and decisive action will have to be taken. Agreed?”
The birds yelled in rage and shot their weapons again.
But instead of letting the blasts hit the energy shield, the emperor started dodging as he made his way towards the terrorists. The blasts were near light speed, but the emperor was dodging them nonchalantly. It felt magical, until I noticed his eyes, darting around. He was predicting the trajectories of the blasts.
He got to the first terrorist and cut his rifle in half, delivering a powerful kick to the temple of the bird and making the most of the motion to jump towards the second hostile, ducking and then lunging, the sword cutting through one of the arms of the avian as if it was warm huglun butter.
Finally, the last terrorist yelled in rage and fear and started spraying blasts at the emperor, who retracted the sword back into the bracelet and then performed some sort of human martial art, punching the chest of the avian with such force and precision that a loud crack of bones echoed throughout the platform, as the final Picapao was sent flying around 5 meters without the use of his wings.
The emperor then made his way towards the gasping bird and squatted down.
“So, who else was involved in this attack?”

Why it's a travesty that the O'rangers lost their Relay Race ML record
I'm not even an O'rangers fan. I'm a Team Momo fan; always have been, always will be.
Yet, let it be known that a small part of me died inside on the day of the ML 2023 Showdown Relay; when I heard that all-too-familiar jingle. The historic, seemingly unbeatable record had fallen. For no longer was the legendary O'rangers 2020 run the only sub-8 second time, as the Turtle Sliders of all teams had gone exactly one-thousandth of a second faster. I couldn't believe my eyes. Is marble sports even real? Or are we tiny marbles merely living in a world controlled by enormous flesh beings? I don't know anymore.
Okay, maybe that got a bit too dramatic. I have nothing against the Turtle Sliders — on the contrary, I prefer them over the O'rangers by quite some margin. However, I've always felt that the O'rangers' 2020 Relay Race record wasn't like any other ML record. Maybe it's something to do with how narratively rich and action-packed that event was in general, but it was just so special to me the way Clementin flawlessly propelled Mandarin forward — only for Mandarin to send Orangin into hyperspace. Kinnowin crossing the line to set that 7.918 second time was, to this day, what I mentally picture when someone says "laying down the gauntlet". I was convinced this mark would never be reset; it may very well have been the most impressive singular performance I had ever seen in a Marble League event.
Of course, three years (and some months, thanks to modern ML scheduling) later, we find ourselves in this situation where, uhh, that record has been broken. As I mentioned, the Turtle Sliders set a 7.917 second time in the very first heat of the Relay Race in the 2023 Showdown. It was a great run, yes, but somehow, it didn't quite feel as groundbreaking to me as that glorious O'rangers run. Was I simply blinded by my stubbornness to admit that the O'rangers weren't perfect? Or is it possible that the conditions of the 2023 Relay Race made it easier to set faster times than in 2020? In this post, I'll take a deep dive into the statistics, look at how the Relay Race has evolved, and try to determine whether the O'rangers 2020 Heat 3 run or the Turtle Sliders 2023 Showdown Heat 1 run (or something else!) is truly the best relay run in Marble League history.
The Relay Race has been in every Marble League from the very beginning with the exception of ML 2018, as that was a winter season. It has also appeared in every Showdown since 2020 and the Qualifiers of ML 2017, 2019 and 2021 (and Friendly Rounds for the latter two). There's a clear oddball among all the Relay Race events held over the years though, and that's the 2016 Relay. With a twisty Skyrail course instead of the standard straight-line track, times in the 20-second range, not to mention a track defect that riddled the event with consolation points given out like candy, the only thing that's keeping this a Relay Race is the commonality of the Savage Speeders emerging victorious. For the purpose of this analysis, I think it's best to exclude the 2016 event entirely. This leaves us with the following instances of the Relay Race in the Marble League:

  • ML 2017 Qualifiers
  • ML 2017
  • ML 2019 Qualifiers + Friendly Round
  • ML 2019
  • ML 2020 + Showdown
  • ML 2021 Qualifiers + Friendly Round
  • ML 2021 + Showdown
  • ML 2022 + Showdown
  • ML 2023 + Showdown
I've decided to combine Qualifiers/Friendly Rounds of their respective years as well as ML main events and their showdown counterparts. The reason for this is that (out of kayfabe) I'm assuming that Qualifiers/Friendly Round Relay Races are filmed on the same course without it being taken down and set up again, and the same goes for ML/SD Relay Races. The reason why it's important for me to distinctly group these events together is that this analysis is concerned with how varying conditions of the Relay Race course may affect the times that teams set, so grouping these keeps the 'conditions' constant between Quali/FR and ML/SD.
Every Relay Race event has a certain number of teams competing in it, but on many occasions, the number of Relay Race times set is even greater than the number of teams competing, because with advancement to semi-finals and finals, some teams end up setting multiple times. I'm going to use every time set in a Relay Race event, not just the fastest times set by each team or the latest times set by each team. This means that all heat times, semi-final times, final times and even the times set by the O'rangers and Pinkies in their 2019 tiebreaker race will be counted for their respective events.
Here's a dot plot showing the distribution of every single time set in each Relay Race. The times on the x-axis are descending from left to right, so the rightmost dots are the fastest times.

So there are a few things to unpack here. First, it's clear that the course was significantly slower in 2017; even more so in the main event compared to the qualifiers. 2019 had two different courses, with the glass-ish surface exclusively used for the 2019 Qualifiers/Friendly Round and the modern red-laned track making its debut in the 2019 main tournament. Also, I can't just not mention:
Snowballs. what.
To be honest, this dot plot doesn't tell us a whole lot. Specifically, it tells us that the average Relay Race time went down quite rapidly until about 2020, but remains seemingly constant after that. Does this mean the conditions of Relay Races in 2020 and 2023 were the same and so the Sliders' fastest time is simply superior? Not necessarily.
Here's a dot plot that shows the same data as above, only from 2020 to 2023. It's a little harder to discern a trend in the average Relay Race time here, but there still exists a generally decreasing trend in the times. This plot also clearly shows, towards the right, the two Relay times I've pitted against each other: O'rangers in 2020 and Sliders in 2023 SD.

These dot plots are nice for visualising all the individual datapoints of Relay Race times in each Relay event, but not the best for actually displaying a trend in the average relay run time. Here's a standard line chart that shows the decrease from 2020 to 2023. Even though these mean times differ by only a few tenths of a second, remember that the two fastest Relay times we're concerned about are one-thousandth apart, so these tenths mean a lot.

Actually, I lied. Only a tiny bit. The average times you see on the line chart above aren't exactly taken from all the data points available for each event. This is because I removed the outliers — but only those on the slower end, not on the faster end. Obviously, the Snowballs in 2019Q is an extreme case of an outlier, but it wasn't the only one. I determined which data points were outliers using a fairly standard method: adding 1.5 times the interquartile range of the data to the third quartile, subtracting 1.5 times the interquartile range from the first quartile, and identifying the times that were not within this new range. If all that sounded like gibberish, just know that I used a statistical method to numerically identify the outliers. The findings were quite interesting:

So there are five outliers on the slow end that I excluded from the average calculations:
  • ML 2017 Team Galactic (Heat) - 12.78s
  • ML 2019Q Snowballs - 13.63s
  • ML 2019 Thunderbolts (Final) - 10.826s
  • ML 2022 Pinkies (Heat) - 8.959s
  • ML 2022 Green Ducks (Heat) - 9.078s
I didn't exclude any outliers on the fast end because those are kind of what this whole analysis is about, but I did identify two:
  • ML 2020 O'rangers (Heat) - 7.918s
  • ML 2021 Shining Swarm (Heat) - 8.106s
Now this is spicy. Not only are the O'rangers here and the Turtle Sliders NOT here, but all of a sudden Shining Swarm makes an appearance? Is our question answered? Does this mean the Sliders are frauds?
Okay, let's not get too excited just yet. While identifying these 'outliers' could be a way to determine that the O'rangers' run is 'better' than the Sliders', I don't believe this is the best method to go about it. What we want is a means to judge every Relay Race run numerically — a rating of some sorts.
An effective solution is to take the z-score; standardising every Relay Race time by considering how impressive it is based on the sample it is derived from (i.e. the Relay Race event it was from). The z-score of a certain relay time is calculated by subtracting it by the mean and dividing that by the standard deviation. This tells us numerically exactly how impressive a time is subject to the average time and how variable the times were in a specific Relay Race event.
Computing all the z-scores for every Relay Race time has finally given us our answer. Here's a dot plot of every z-score for each of the Relay Race times from 2017 to 2023, excluding the slow outliers. I should also mention that the mean and standard deviation for each Relay event also excluded the slow outliers.

Unlike the very first dot plot I showed, all of these events seem to have a very similar average z-score. That's no coincidence; the very nature of z-scores is that they always have a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1 (hence why it's called standardisation). On the far right, you can see the most impressive Relay runs based on the conditions of their respective events. The Turtle Sliders managed a very respectable -2.61 with their record-breaking run, still ahead of the Shining Swarm's 2021 run despite the latter being classified as a fast outlier and the former not. However, taking a look a few levels higher up, I am one happy O'rangers fan on loan. My hypothesis was correct — with a z-score of -2.78, the O'rangers 2020 run reigns supreme as the most impressive Relay Race run in Marble League history, at least by this metric.
If you've read through this whole post or even just skimmed through parts of it, I'd like to say thank you — it means a lot to me. I put quite a lot of effort into this for an idea that just crossed my mind less than 24 hours ago, and it's almost 6am as I'm typing this and the sun is pretty much up already. I should go to bed lol.

Hi everyone! This study system will guarantee that you receive a minimum score of 1400 on the SAT, given that you follow all of the steps and consistently practice over the course of several months. Please upvote this post so that others see it!
For June 1st test takers tomorrow, I would recommend only following the Time Management category for now.
This post will include four sections: Time Management, System of Study, Practice Section 1 (Reading) & Practice Section 2 (Math), Techniques 1 (Reading) & Techniques 2 (Math). You MUST complete and/or have a strong understanding of these concepts in order to receive the aforementioned scores. This post focuses on the reading section more than the math section, as reading is less formulaic than math. Important information in this post will be marked with three stars (***), and absolutely necessary information will be marked with five stars (*****).

Time Management:

*** 1. Stop reading when there are ~three minutes left on Reading Module 1. You must give your brain time to rest after reading so that you have more focus on Reading Module 2. Do not double-check your work during these three minutes (this doesn't apply if you still have unanswered questions).
****\ 2. Once you begin Reading Module 2, skip to question 15* immediately and continue pressing "Next" until you reach the grammar section (sometimes grammar begins on question 16, other times on 17). Complete these questions all the way until 27. Once completed, go back to question 1 and continue working until completed. By using this method, you will have completed about 15 out of 27 questions and have about 15 minutes remaining for the final 12 questions (this technique only applies to the reading section).
****\ 3. DO NOT attempt the extremely difficult questions (for both Module 2s) UNTIL you have completed all of the easy, medium, and relatively difficult questions. These extremely difficult questions will take a lot of time and have very little impact on your score in comparison to other questions. For the reading section, you can expect these around questions 10 to 15. For the math section, you can expect these around questions 14 to 22. You can expect about 3 to 5 extremely difficult questions on both Module 2s. You should be able to recognize the extremely difficult questions within 10 to 20 seconds of reading. This technique is important because the easy, medium, and relatively hard questions are weighted more than the extremely difficult questions. IMPORTANT: THIS TECHNIQUE IS SIMPLY TO SAVE TIME FOR THE MORE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS BY SKIPPING THE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT QUESTIONS; YOU MUST STILL ATTEMPT TO COMPLETE ALL QUESTIONS. As stated earlier, this technique applies to both Reading Module 2 AND* Math Module 2.

System of Study (all links included in Practice Sections):

****\ 1. CollegeBoard Question Bank is your BEST source out of every single study source for BOTH* the reading and math sections, as these questions are most similar to the actual SAT. You can choose to exclude questions that are in the Bluebook practice tests by checking "Exclude Active Questions". You can also choose the difficulty level and the specific skill on the left side.
**\ 2. Use Khan Academy for reading. This is one of the best sources for understanding the content in the reading section. Once you are confident with all units, only work through the Course Challenge. Try to complete at least one full course challenge every other day. You can supplement this with the CollegeBoard Question Bank. Relative to other math study sources, Khan Academy's math section isn't as beneficial as its reading (but is still occasionally useful), so use the Practice Section 2* links provided instead as your main source for math.
**\* 3. Study using the links provided in this post for 1 to 3 hours every day for a minimum of 60 days before your SAT. This study plan depends on what you already know, so increase the hours and days if you are not confident in level of knowledge. If this content is still not enough for you, Erica Metzler is often recommended for reading and Uworld for math.
*** 4. Currently, Bluebook provides you with 6 practice tests. Try to complete a practice test every 1 to 2 weeks. Do not complete more than one practice test in a week, as you will have the answers memorized. These practice tests are the best sources for understanding your current level of knowledge, so it's important to use them wisely.

Practice Section 1 (Reading):

Note: Tutorllini is a great source for the math section, but his videos are very comprehensive, so skip around and decide what you want to study:

Techniques 1 (Reading):

***** 1. EVERY single question follows this formula/pattern: there will be two answers that are obviously wrong, one answer that is correct, but not in the context of the question (lead distractor), and the answer that is correct in the context of the question (correct answer). Always acknowledge this formula (especially when you aren't sure of the answer) and use process of elimination by eliminating the three incorrect questions first.
  1. All of the reading section's questions function on logic and real-world scenarios, so use this to your advantage.
  2. Most of the time, the question is asking you to base your answer on the last sentence. However, you still need to absorb the content in the intro and middle sentences to understand the context of the final sentence.
4. Inference questions (typically worded as "Which choice most logically completes the text?") are entirely based on the main idea of the passage and then want you to infer what result should follow.
  1. For grammar, the Standard English Conventions category in the CollegeBoard Question Bank will be your best resource.
  2. Read the entire grammar passage (or at least scan through most of it). Throughout all grammar questions, this will collectively only take an extra minute or two. This is important because most grammar questions require context based on time (past, present, future), which you will only truly understand by reading the majority of the passage.
  3. If you see a word that you don't know in the vocabulary section (typically questions 1 to 4 on both modules), don't use it (unless the other three are not possible options).

Techniques 2 (Math):

***** 1. Learn Desmos like the back of your hand (Tutorllini's Desmos videos will provide you with the majority of what you need to know). Desmos can be used to solve the majority of the problems in the math section.
*** 2. Desmos regression lines are safer and more practical than doing the calculations yourself, as you can input variables and have more control over the numbers (watch Tutorllini's Desmos #9 for more information). Regression lines only work if you have points to put in the table. In these regression lines, you can include given translations, replace variables with numbers, and For example, if you were given the formula ax^2, + bx + c, and were given that "a" is a positive integer, you could replace "a" with 1 (or any other positive integer) in your regression line. You can use linear regression, quadratic regression, quadratic regression in vertex form, and exponential regression (listed in the picture, respectively).

Apologies in advance for a long post.
I am terrible at math, started really struggling around 4th grade. Managed to pass through pre-calc in high school and stats in college and be able to continue my education because all my strengths are in literacy and that made up for poor math grades.
I wish I hadn’t done this, but I also cheated at some points. Not an excuse, but I wasn’t going to be stuck with not being able to get into college or go further with the skills I do have, based on one subject. A close friend had a similar deficit in writing skills because of a TBI and being an immigrant, so we worked together and would usually edit/correct/copy each other’s work in weak areas. I also received occasional accommodations for extra exam time and to take them by myself, which was less stressful but also allowed me to hide how long it takes to do the basics and any cheating.
My dad tried to help me with math, but often would be angry, so the whole subject is very stressful. Any privileges growing up were also completely subject to my math grades (well, overall grades, but my usual B- or C+ was always in math). We know more about effects of screen time now, but as a Millennial, it was so limited due to my grades that I was socially isolated (most people used instant messaging at the time), and a lack of being allowed to do anything fun made my health suffer. Doing math makes me physically anxious.
I have a non-math tertiary degree. People respect it and see me as competent and someone you would want your kid to marry. I’m well-read. I work in my field.
But between my poor foundational skills and not using it much in daily life, it’s a problem. I’d estimate I’m somewhere around 3rd or 4th grade level.
I cannot:
  1. Do my own taxes (I might be able to if I absolutely had to, but the penalties for messing up seem so dire that I left it to my dad, then my spouse).
  2. Calculate somewhat complex everyday math, such as figuring out “if I use x amount of y per day, when will I need to buy more?” Usually I over-buy the basics and store carefully.
  3. I often do shopping for my family, and cannot hold or approximate multiple items and costs in my head for budgeting. Use a calculator, and tend to usually pick the cheaper food option because I worry about overspending.
  4. Calculate my daily life math in my head. I am trying to be healthier, but cannot subtract or multiply distance or other workout metrics, or keep track of calories, without a calculator. I cannot seem to “carry” numbers in my head, so I have a lot of problems with anything requiring that.
  5. Although I understand red tape and paperwork well, I cannot make financial decisions or be involved in them the way I want to be. There seems to be an inability to do long-term math or understand what is the best deal for things like cars, vet treatment for a pet, credit payments, etc. My spouse handles household finances, but I would like to be able to know more. I worry about a bad decision and feel unable to put aside money for my personal wants, because I don’t understand finances well but am able to worry about there not being enough.
  6. Accurately feed or dose animals. I care for many animals, including ones needing formula or medicine at times. I can usually accurately feed them based on their own cues and knowing “Y animal of Z age usually eats X every W hours” but am terrified I’ll hurt or kill one if I mess up a med dosage, as some are based on amounts per kilo. Don’t worry, not a vet though.
  7. Convert metric to imperial. I can bake and use some fractions, but struggle with conversions. My family are closely tied to a European country and receive many family recipes and other information in metric.
  8. Accurately do math involved in some games I play. I will buy too few or too many seeds in Stardew Valley, or have a hard time in Skyrim figuring out what least valuable items to drop to save on carrying capacity.
  9. Use my own costs and finances to figure out how much to charge for independent work using my degree and skill. I can approximate this by asking others what they charge, but don’t have all the information I need.
  10. Help children with homework. I do not yet have children, but often help neighbors and relatives with children. I tell them to ask their parents rather than admit I also do not know the answer.
  11. Fully understand something I am interested in. I’m fascinated and terrified by nuclear energy and disasters, but am not able to learn enough physics (again, math), to understand how the reactions and such work.
How can I improve? Not looking to be Einstein, just learn more about basic skills, finances, and basic physics. Preferably online, because no one but my spouse and close friend know how bad my math skills are.

Does anyone know if I need to adjust my bloom time (insider term) when the relative humidity is higher in summer? Surely they my grounds could be slightly damper even though I grind immediately before pouring with my handmade gooseneck (I don’t trust the precision of an off the shelf device).
Has James or Lance even considered this? Is there a calculator online? I’m worried I’m going to waste my $250 gesha and I only have 100g to play with because the monks who roasted it all died in a tragic cofermentation accident!
So annoyed the coffee compass doesn’t suggest how to modify this variable.

There seems to be an inability to do long-term math or understand what is the best deal for things like cars, vet treatment for a pet, credit payments, etc. My spouse handles household finances, but I would like to be able to know more. I worry about a bad decision and feel unable to put aside money for my personal wants, because I don’t understand finances well but am able to worry about there not being enough.
  6. Accurately feed or dose animals. I care for many animals, including ones needing formula or medicine at times. I can usually accurately feed them based on their own cues and knowing “Y animal of Z age usually eats X every W hours” but am terrified I’ll hurt or kill one if I mess up a med dosage, as some are based on amounts per kilo. Don’t worry, not a vet though.
  7. Convert metric to imperial. I can bake and use some fractions, but struggle with conversions. My family are closely tied to a European country and receive many family recipes and other information in metric.
  8. Accurately do math involved in some games I play. I will buy too few or too many seeds in Stardew Valley, or have a hard time in Skyrim figuring out what least valuable items to drop to save on carrying capacity.
  9. Use my own costs and finances to figure out how much to charge for independent work using my degree and skill. I can approximate this by asking others what they charge, but don’t have all the information I need.
  10. Help children with homework. I do not yet have children, but often help neighbors and relatives with children. I tell them to ask their parents rather than admit I also do not know the answer.
  11. Fully understand something I am interested in. I’m fascinated and terrified by nuclear energy and disasters, but am not able to learn enough physics (again, math), to understand how the reactions and such work.
How can I improve? Not looking to be Einstein, just learn more about basic skills, finances, and basic physics. Preferably online, because no one but my spouse and close friend know how bad my math skills are.

I have been revamping my company's excel-based proposal estimator over the past few months, and I was dead-set on having a button to add X number (user-filled cell) of rows into the table instead of scrolling through 200-300 unused rows when most of our bids have 30 items of less.
I am completely self-taught for all things coding/VBA in the past year, and pretty much every suggestion I ran into on Google was that running a loop of
ActiveSheet.ListObjects("TableName").ListRows.Add AlwaysInsert:=True
was the only option to add multiple.
Which is fine, if you're just adding a few rows. But again, when we need to add rows it can be 50+ and even with ScreenUpdating and Calculation turned off it was still taking upwards of 1 second per row.

So, here's the solution I came up with!
Made a new worksheet and copied one of my table rows into it so it would have the formulas, then dragged it down to autofill to row 1000-something. And used the following code that is activated by button click:

(Wanted to add that I didn't know about ListObjects().Resize until I was building this solution yesterday, but it wouldn't have worked for me anyway because there's a bunch of other stuff below the Estimator table)

[My first post here, a better place for this, in some LLM subreddit? It was removed, until I added [D], [R] better for my sort of research?]
The tokenizer (tiktoken) for gpt-4o is seemingly adding tokens (at least for Icelandic), since gpt-4, and I believe it's going in the opposite direction we should be going. I don't think it's sustainable, nor needed, to expand that way to more natural languages. Even Icelandic alone has over 1 million word *forms* (e.g. all adjectives come in 120 word forms) and counting (in incomplete database of words I have), and English has over 400 thousand words.
It occurred to me, tokens should just be one letter (or even part of). I've since changed my mind and I think tokens should be based on bigrams (plus single letter tokens/bytes). Numbers and punctuation, and space, must be a special case, and Chinese. [Tokens could in theory be only two the bits 0 and 1, and 8 needed to make up bytes..., why not, the answer might be the same as for why not single byte tokens.]
The average length of a word is around 10 letters, in English, and German etc. i.e. from dictionaries, but in actual use the average length of an English word is "4.79 letters per word, and 80% are between 2 and 7 letters long" so basing on bigraphs, would mean a factor of 2-3 times more tokens per word, for a very modest expansion. I hear you say, we pay per token, but costs are coming down, and with linear transformers, or similar Mamba etc., do no longer have the quadratic cost of traditional Transformers, nor effectively limited context lengths/windows, also the output of tokens is very fast.
So why bigrams, not trigrams, or base only on single letters (5x more tokens), or only on whole words (without subwords, or allow that too?)?
Basing on only letters could mean 26 possible lower case tokens, double for upper case, or 128 possible for full ASCII, or over one million possible tokens for full Unicode support.
Clearly basing on Unicode code points (rather than code units, maybe) seems not viable, even if we have tokens for so far only the about 150 thousand assigned characters. It might be doable, tokens, i.e. "vocabulary" count is already about a third of that.
Tokenizers already have "byte" tokens (to handle arbitrary Unicode, but a recent addition?), meaning any arbitrary binary file, or UTF-8 file, is possible, already, it's like an escape hatch when a word can't be tokenized as one, or more (for sub-word tokens). So why not only base on bytes, 256 possible tokens (plus some few control tokens)? I believe the reason it's not already done, is that, in effect it mean the network needs to learn the UTF-8 encoding, i.e. to decode variable 1 to 4 bytes per letter (I'm sure possible, but we might not want to vast part of it, I think lowest layers, on such decoding; Image neural neural networks can already decode binary file formats, not just PNG, even compressed JPEG, to some degree, I suppose only handling DC coefficients, i.e. at lower resolution, not discovering DCT).
Non single-letter tokens handicap an LLM in some situations. E.g. if you ask it: how many letters are in the word "transformers"? To us we count letters, but the LLM sees the whole word as one token, so it must somehow store the number of letters for that, and each token, and have a way to decode them. This could lead to a problem in all kinds of unusual situations. The argument could be the simplest model one-letter tokens, best, or the next-simplest bigrams. So why not the simplest? It allows for arbitrary text such as a random password 8irkQPbIsYqqVFb. But it is not semantically meaningful. We want mostly to compress meaningful data/language, i.e. non-random data (random isn't compressible). Current tokenizers are very good at it, but bigrams are also good. English has 26 letter alphabet, and arbitrary bigrams would be 26^2 = 676 possibilities, and trigrams 26^3 = 17576, while English actually has only 139 bigrams (79% compression), and way more trigrams (somewhat better compression, but I think trigrams not scalable to many languages).

Russian/Cyrillic has its own 132 bigrams, the number of tokens possible will be 139 (for English) + 132 = 271 at a minimum (see table 6). German has 151 so the numbers add up to many, though even German, French etc. bigrams have some overlap with English. E.g. Indic languages will not, maybe with each other. Chinese has whole words in each letter, so bigrams do not apply in the same way, likely need to be special-cased, handled more like punctuation, each with it's own token, and Chinese alone will have a lot.
Using bigrams has a certain simplicity, e.g. counting letters in a word is simple for even-number-letter words, and only one special case other words. Odd-number-letter words must store only letter in a special way. The last letter in a word could be that possible odd letter. It's simple to do and I'm unsure if the alternative, i.e. having the first letter the possible odd- letter would be any better (then you must first count them), I still want the first letter handled in a special way anyway for casing purposes.

At first it seemed to get me the exact same tokens, just many tokens renumbered, but actually it seems like it's "improving" for Icelandic, supposedly, with now one fewer:
The "einn" there is the masculine form (for "alone"), and "ein" the female, then the old one adds an "n", and it seems ok. I it works either way, Icelandic isn't perfect yet, but close enough (also the voice capability), which is rather amazing for a very low-resource language, maybe with least training data a very small fraction of a percentage. The split into tokens is grammatically all wrong, so maybe letter split or simple digram would be ok. I think since einn and ein are related words, actually the ein-n might be better with the former token for masculine would then relatable to the female word. However I think we can not rely on such good relevant grammatical split, e.g. heimi-num would be better with -num there the definite article of the word "world".

I’m in the last class for my masters and for whatever reason we need to post one of our milestones for peer review. I posted and a few hours later someone posted their milestone with very similar findings to mine. I normally wouldn’t care since we are using the same dataset, but some of it is blatant.
The paper they provided isn’t verbatim, but much of it is the same. I had actually made a mistake on a calculation and they had the same mistake in their paper. I had said something like almost 40% of dog owners like ice cream (this is just a made up example) and they said the same thing even though this percentage was calculated wrong.
Pretty much anywhere we had to do analysis they used the same variables out of the 70+ and came to the same conclusion as I did. Even some of the bullshitting I did when I was tired was used in their paper. The funny thing is the included images they had in the paper were not even the correct dataset, it seems like they had used data from a prior class.
I’m tempted to let it ride, but it also kind of makes me angry someone would get this far only to do this. I might just take screenshots to protect myself in case when we do submit on Sunday I get flagged. Any thoughts?

Preventative Cardiology Part 2: Lipids
Lipids, specifically circulating lipoproteins (which are varying quantities of cholesterol and triglyceride combined with protein) are the most important, established conventional risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Between 10-15% of the US population has high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol, see below) often part of metabolic syndrome (extensive discussion to come in a subsequent post). This circulating LDL cholesterol deposits in blood vessels including the coronary arteries leading to first fatty streaks and later mature plaques. Those plaques can block the artery causing chest pain as well as spontaneously rupture leading to a heart attack. See diagram for a simplified overview of plaque development. Importantly, HDL lipoproteins can pull cholesterol out of plaques returning it to the liver and thus are thought to confer some protection from ASCVD.
A standard lipid panel that your doctor orders includes the following measures:
  1. Total Cholesterol
  2. LDL Cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoprotein)
  3. HDL Cholesterol (High-Density Lipoprotein)
  4. Triglycerides
  5. Non-HDL Cholesterol
Your doctor then takes those numbers and puts it into a risk calculator to determine if you are low, intermediate, or high risk to make a decision about whether to offer you a statin or other cholesterol lowering therapy. The biggest risk factor is actually not cholesterol levels it's your age so a 40 year may not be offered a statin with the exact same numbers a 60 year old would. Longevity is based on primordial prevention, which is prevention long before diseases develop, so I think this is a fundamentally flawed approach. It works at a population level but for individuals it undervalues lifetime risk. As a 40 year old, I may have a 3% 10 year risk, but my lifetime risk of an event is 70%. Thus, in conventional practice I would not be offered cholesterol lowering medication. The moment I turn 50, and my 10 year risk exceeds 5%, then I would. Individualized decision making is key as is super early intervention with both medication and lifestyle (diet, etc).
Some nonconventional but still very important lipid markers not routinly tested are:
  1. Lp(a) (Lipoprotein a)
  2. ApoB (Apolipoprotein B)
  3. Lipoprotein Fractionation
  4. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Index
Lp(a), another lipoprotein, is a one time test. Elevated levels greatly increases risk of ASCVD irrespective of conventional lipid markers and often necessitate things like aspirin for primary prevention (fallen out of favor for most populations but reasonable with elevated Lp(a)) and more intensive control of conventional risk factors.
ApoB (Apolipoprotein B) actually doesn't measure cholesterol at all like the conventional lipid panel does; rather it measures the protein contained on all atherogenic (plaque forming) lipoproteins. That includes LDL but also VLDL and ILDL. Many people, including myself, thinks it gives a more complete picture of atherogenic risk and should be included with the conventional markers.
Lipoprotein Fractionation breaks down the LDL particles into their subtypes. This is important because we know that small, dense LDL particles are the most atherogenic. A relatively normal LDL number may belie a very elevated small dense LDL particle number, which would necessitate more intensive treatment.
Finally, Omega 3 Fatty Acid Index, measures the amount of EPA + DHA in your red blood cells (a surrogate marker for whole body levels). Omega 3s although a bit controversial are widely thought to be protective against ASCVD. Most Americans are deficient and 8%+ on this index has been shown to be protective in a number of well designed studies.
Treating lipids include Statin, Ezetimibe, PSK9 inhibitors, bempadoic acid, fish oil supplements, and fiber supplements as well as dietary approaches like the Mediterranean diet. Nevertheless it all starts with knowing your numbers and risk.
In part 3, we will discuss inflammation as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

    1. Example: If you choose a family of 4 human combatants of the same sex, you can make the distribution between their combat capabilities reflect the entire human race, everyone within that family, or everyone of their sex.
