2024.05.20 02:21 Kaltovar Great Eras of the Cybernetic Federal Republic of Kaltovar (Abridged)

The First Era:
Kaltovar was once part of massive Empire whose name is now lost to time. That Empire fractured into individual counties when the Emperor died at the age of 93, having outlived his heirs who had died variously of disease, war, and old age.
Most Counties were fiercely xenophobic due to centuries of rivalry, but the County of Kaltovar was an important trade hub of many peoples and its tradition was to welcome outsiders if they had coin. A non-noble member of the officer class, Major Karl Von-Doppelberg, had been elected to rule the County in place of a Count. Karl did not have the highest military rank, but was incredibly wealthy due to his family background, and was able to literally purchase votes.
The less intense xenophobia and more permissive atmosphere toward building meant rapid growth of an industrialized population in the city centers without having to drain the rural areas of their people to make the "Great Industrial Shift" as many of their peers had to do. Land became very expensive but labor was cheap and steel was in great supply, so the Merchants built higher and higher. Rural communities were subsidized to support the growing urban population, and a period of incredible wealth and prosperity ensued that drove even further immigration.
Kaltovar's massive wealthy population in relation to its neighbors allowed it to maintain a substantially larger military force, which came in handy during the brutal decades of civil war between the Counties. The death of the Emperor had left a power vacuum in which every County believed it was the best and most fit to inherit the Imperial throne. Huge factions formed, supporting different rulers, while Kaltovar traded with all of them and accepted the many refugees generated by the fighting. The Kingdom of Nirn, the Kingdom of Balugia, and the Republic of Thet.
A great paranoia swept the land, and it was during this period that the rule of Universal Conscription and the law requiring all citizens to own a "Modern Infantry Weapon" was introduced. At the time, that meant a bolt action rifle. One had to pay a fine of 3 Kaltmarks or 2 chickens if their household was found to have less than one such rifle for every member over the age of 16. This period also saw women and children conscripted into the military under the theory that they were capable of operating rifles in battle, which was later proven correct.
Eventually the Kingdom of Nirn decided to invade Kaltovar, which brought support from both the other factions who wanted it for themselves. Together, Kaltovar and the two factions slowly consumed the Kingdom of Nirn and then Kaltovar was again neutral. Balugia and Thet resumed their struggles, both intending to finish Kaltovar off when the war was over. Kaltovar, in the meanwhile, continued to build improvements and strengthen its military. Many years passed in the great war between Balugia and Thet, and both of them did frequent trade with Kaltovar.
After a long battle, the exhausted forces of Thet finally defeated the Balugian Royal Army and proceeded to immediately turn their forces against Kaltovar. Kaltovar defended its new lands and simultaniously invaded the former Balugian territory, which was only protected by a light occupation force meant to keep the locals suppressed. Kaltovar, being rich, paid great sums of money to the locals to rise up against their new Thetian masters. The combined peoples of Kaltovar and Balugia annihilated the armies of Thet in a relatively short campaign, because Thet was already tired from fighting against Balugia.
Major Karl Von Doppelberg celebrated the victory by declaring the First Directive of the new Nation, "From Many Peoples One Nation." which confirmed that there was no single culture to be venerated above the rest. Loyalty to the nascent State, productivity, wealth, and military competence were more important.
The Revolution:
Vadim Bel-Khyber was, at one point, an eager young Cybernetics Professor from a long line of aristocratic merchants and military officers. He received the best education from the youngest age, and was groomed constantly to fill the role of a leader. He did not by any means reject his role as the family heir, and was by all accounts excited to take up his position as the head of House Bel-Khyber, but spent enough time in Marxist theory circles to cause minor embarrassment to his family.
When his father fell out of favor with the high nobles for losing his temper during a plenary session, most of their family property and wealth was confiscated,. Vadim's casual interest in Marxist theories of inequality turned into a fanatical obsession now that economic and social inequality personally impacted him. It wasn't just about achieving justice, which was truly part of it, but also more prominently about taking revenge against the Nobles who had wronged his family for simply [talking shit] speaking their minds.
Vadim started by getting a job as a low level public servant, and gradually working his way up to the position of Comptroller-General. He was essentially the master-treasurer for the entire nation, someone who in theory was supposed to have very little actual power. The nobles found it hilarious to keep him in this role, which was seen as unfit for one of his birth, and a mark of shame on the wider Bel-Khyber dynasty. However, they always viewed him as a coward and so never feared him - to their magnificent error.
Over 3000 years ago he instigated a coup against the government he served, though he never altered his official title. He always remained the "Comptroller-General", a position responsible for all financial disbursements on behalf of the government. Gradually, after convincing the nobles to allow him a small "Treasury Police" to catch white collar criminals, he leveraged that authority to refuse to pay for the buildings or wages of entities that opposed him on the grounds of corruption and abuse of funds. This was corrupt on his part because it was to serve his own interests, but he could not be impugned because the corruption actually existed and had merely been overlooked for decades... Enough decades to establish long chains of evidence.
Although his behavior was obviously corrupt, the citizens almost universally supported it because everyone else was even more corrupt.
Vadim worked his way to the top of the Oligarchy, and proceeded to systematically dismantle it using its own tools of control, concentrating all their authority under him and elevating himself to the status of the Supreme Ruler in the process.
As soon as his control was undisputed, Vadim had many of the Nobles and Oligarchs arrested or even killed without warning all over the country on the same night. He established control over state broadcasting systems, ordered the army to open their armories to the public, and ordered the public to go into the armories and take up weapons and "clean up the government as they saw fit."
Although that night of chaos spiraled wildly out of control, the aftermath transitioned into thousands of years of relatively peaceful rule. He originally achieved this by personally performing surgery on himself using a wireless transmitter attached to his brain-stem to enable him to control the robotic surgical instruments even as he extracted his own brain and implanted it into the state machinery.
The Golden Age:
After approximately 1000 years in power, Vadim decided a human brain was no longer necessary. Having already expanded his mind with machine components, he realized his organic brain was less than 1% of his total cognitive capacity. In order to abandon his mortality completely and prove his theory of total consciousness transfer, he dissected his own brain alive and studied it as it died, observing hardly any change in his overall processes and confirming his beliefs.
The same day he faked his own death, releasing press statements that his brain had passed away during a recreational drug induced stroke. He did this because his position as dictator had started to inspire too much fear in his subjects. He wanted them to grow freely and experiment with democracy, though his shadowy hand would continue to guide their course.
Kaltovar was brought under the management of the TEMPEST Council (Temporary Emergency Management Political Economic and Security). The TEMPEST Council was made up one third of those personally selected by Vadim, one third those selected by the leaders of his ministries, and one third by those elected by the people.
The Rule of the TEMPEST Council progressed for hundreds of years and enjoyed broad public support. It was seen as a step toward democracy, spearheaded by one of Vadim's most trusted advisors, Diplomatic Mainframe O.D.I.N. / DZ-00a69v00, until ...
The End of Time:
A top secret facility designated X-16 at the heart of an artificial depleted uranium moon named Lucifer was infiltrated by an agent from a foreign power. There, experiments on a new generation of hyperspace drive were well underway. This hyperspace drive was much faster than previous model, and required hundreds of times more energy. Unfortunately, the technology was dangerously unstable and the lead scientist was under the influence of an inter-dimensional being who sought to turn his work toward demented ends. What manifested was a device capable of altering the specifications of reality, and that is what the foreign agent gained access to. The Agent wished for "A world that would start from scratch, where neither country would be hostile toward each other, and the threat of a great war between them was no more."
Reality, as it was known, was totally destroyed by the device. Survivors were thrust into a new and previously unknown dimension where the laws of physics remained largely intact except for the minor detail that magic existed. Dozens of nations from the same reality were shunted into a single planet that was perfect for life yet mysteriously devoid of advanced civilizations. The new reality is more durable than the previous one because of the presence of magic, and it is no longer possible to destroy it with the same level of technology. This event created a massive energy signature within the multiverse that attracted scouts from other advanced multidimensional civilizations, and this single planet became one of the most populated worlds across realities, where many countries own "Embassy Territories" that are often thousands of miles and include cities, forests, lakes, and all the other features one would expect of a country. This arrangement facilitates diplomacy between these various ancient entities.
A new figurehead, an acid-blooded insectoid alien General T'Xlekhan L'Xrada, has become the defacto leader of Kaltovar due to being in charge of a special anti-doomsday taskforce and leading the bulk of the survivors at the time of the disaster. However, the TEMPEST Council, still lead by O.D.I.N. / DZ-00a69v00, continues to wield extraordinary influence. It is currently unknown whether L'Xrada might become the next supreme leader, or whether he'll inevitably be forced to yield full control to the Council.

2024.05.20 02:02 22knocks pineward reviews!

pineward reviews!
Hello, hello! I ordered 10 Pineward samples on April 12th, and they arrived on April 20th with a free sample, Juniperus! I’ve been looking forward to trying this house, as I’m trying to try out green/forest scents which I otherwise wouldn’t opt for, and I was very impressed by everything I tried. I have broken free of the "Forest Perfume to Christmas Candle" Curse!
10 Pineward samples + a freebie mini sample at the bottom
First of all…the colors of all the samples are so gorgeous! I would say these lasted a decent amount of time, around 4 hours in the Personal Space around me, and many more hours on the skin itself. Many of them did wear a bit closer to the skin. I did struggle with the atomizers at times (sometimes they would just Spurt Liquid in a stream), but no horrific accidents as of yet.
I also want to preface these reviews by saying that I am not the best at attributing which green scents correspond to which notes. A nose in progress…I do think it would be really cool if Pineward ever sold solinotes but for tree components – like fir balsam vs. black hemlock vs. cypress etc. Know that...I made an attempt lol. Anyways, onto the reviews!
Apple Tabac - (fresh red apple, tobacco, fir balsam, rum resin, dried fruits)
This is a dry (not juicy, not sweet) apple with a smoky tobacco lingering alongside it. There’s something almost bitter or waxy here (to me it reads like the skin of the apple) + something alcoholic. The bitterness fluctuates with wear, the tobacco changing its mind on whether it wants to be sweet or harsh. There’s more of that “tingling” from the fir (fresh, green notes tend to present like that to me). The drydown is a bit like a caramel apple, nothing tart, but a hint of that opening apple that never quite fades away, enveloped in an almost chewy caramel! The caramel aspect is definitely from the dried fruits, but somehow on me it can smell a bit BO-like — savory and almost spiced? Something similar happens with Gristmill. Smell faded in about 3 hours. Not my favorite, but I think I will need to retry this in autumn. 2/5
Brokilän - (black hemlock needles, larch cones, sandarac resin, momi, sandalwood, Vietnamese oud.)
Wow I love this one! Fresh light greens with a creamy sandalwood drydown, almost incenselike. It’s resinous and smells like coke when it first goes on. Like a very mentholy, almost sharp green-brown, as if it were fizzy. I normally am not the biggest fan of herbal scents but this balances it in a way to offer a more refreshing, less stale vision of Herbs. After a bit, I get more of the bark of the tree itself, woody and still prickly. Eventually, a sweet, creamy sandalwood comes wafting through, first noticeable from a distance. It takes me by surprise at first, and when I lean closer to my wrist to sniff, I lose the scent. Over time, it melds more with the other prickly woods in the scent, smoothing them out, presenting more cohesively. It was okay in terms of projection, and I found I often caught whiffs as I moved around. The dry down is sandalwood with an almost textural element from the other woody/resinous elements, and a touch of green remaining. Lost projection at around 2-3 hours in but 8 hours later I could still smell it on my skin, I think this is the most long lasting Pineward scent I’ve tried. 5/5
Caravansary - (fir balsam, deer musk, vanilla, black tea, lavender, blue spruce, blue chamomile, treemoss, incense, pinecone mulch, campfire smoke.)*
My partner says this one “smells like a forest garden”. I get a Blue Green vibe from this for sure! It definitely changes a lot with rest. There is something light in the background here, I think it’s the herbs (particularly the chamomile). The musk isn’t overwhelming but it is present and warm. After some wear, I get wafts of this sweet, herbal smell that I find very intriguing! I’m not sure what it is exactly but I was continuously sniffing my wrist in an attempt to smell it again. Maybe it’s the vanilla + chamomile, it seems to only really be present from a distance, making me wonder if it’s being buried under the heavier scents from a closer sniffing distance. It’s a cool, smooth vanilla, in contrast to everything else being warm and a bit prickly! The drydown is a sweet vanilla tea for me. It’s a startlingly bright and punchy scent somehow… the lingering scent of the greens and blues on my clothes feels invigorating, even when on my skin it has dried down to a cozy, gentle scent. Overall, this is a dark, dry, cozy scent, with blue green fispruce bearing the brunt of the work, as deer musk hangs out in the background. It does evoke the feeling of being bundled up in a cozy blanket with a campfire in the background and dark, looming forest around you. It shares some of that tannic smokiness with Murkwood, I would say, but the smoke is less present here, though it does gradually come out more with wear. 5/5
Fanghorn II - (silver fir, moss, lichen, pine needles, wet soil, damp vegetation.)
Damp dirt here, very similar to Murkwood to my nose. I had a hard time distinguishing the various facets of this one, but in comparison to Murkwood, I would say it’s more dark green leaves with dirt and no incense/smoke. It doesn’t change much with rest, or morph much with wear. Very refined tbh, for a forest fragrance, in terms of not being as wild/”in the dirt” as I was expecting. I like this, but I think I prefer Murkwood, as this one is a bit more plain and I can’t smell it as much after a few hours. 3/5
Gristmill - (Cedar planks, sawdust, smoldering logs, edelwood oil, amber, black walnut, mahogany, labdanum.)
So here’s where body chemistry played an interesting role…All of these I tested on myself, but I had my partner try this one as well. On my partner's first application, it smelled like cedar planks with a touch of sweetness that made the perfume very captivating. It was almost like a creamy sandalwood, and the cedar was not very funky at all! I was enjoying this a lot. But then I tried it on myself…this time I got more of the richness of the cedar, but in a way that’s not very fresh…it reminded me more of a storage chest/polished wood. I get a slight motor oil / bbq quality to it as well. After some time, it veers towards a fun and prickly sandalwood, but then immediately I smell like Indian food. I’m not sure how, but even on my clothes, I smelled savory spices. I think my skin can make some scents smell a touch “spiced” or savory but this was one of the extremes! Unfortunately, not a huge fan of how it wears on me but I will be pushing this more onto my partner haha. 2/5 due to body chemistry :(
Hayloft - (hay, lavender honey, crocus, sweet vernalgrass, bison grass, toasted almond, hazelnut, oats, dusty wheat.)
Nutty, sweet, bright, light! Doesn’t change much with rest. This reminds me a bit of an oat-scented body wash, or honey bunches of oats. The honey is really light here, somewhat floral. It’s quite sweet and I can definitely see this as being cloying after some time but it’s a very cozy scent and I will try wearing this more once the weather gets colder. Maybe just not the most "me" scent. 2/5
Icefall - (white grapefruit, blue cypress, maritime pine, juniper, nootka, cedar, sandalwood, seaweed.)
Oooh this one is kind of like a smoky, bitter grapefruit on top of a subtle aquatic base. My partner says it smells like “seaweed, or like a sushi incense, but in a good way”. It is surprisingly more woody than I expected. Occasionally I get a bright whiff of juniper, from a distance. After some wear, there’s a hint of sandalwood (this shy sandalwood pops up in quite a few other Pineward scents!) that comes out to smooth things over, but the grapefruit is still there, though less overtly aquatic. More of those forest greens come through as well, and it compliments the grapefruit quite well, remaining bright and refreshing as a general couple throughout weartime. The drydown is mostly light wood with a touch of grapefruit and a very subtle seaweed smell. If you are afraid of the seaweed note, as I was – don’t be! It’s very approachable here. 4/5
Murkwood - (fir balsam, black hemlock, lapsang suchong, moss, incense, bitter myrrh.)
A very resinous incense, with a touch of sweetness. The incense is dirt-like and smoky (likely the lapsang suchong). There are some very subtle dark bitter greens, and it’s very interesting to smell this layered on top of the deep smoky body, as if a slight relief from the incense. After a bit, the tea flavor strengthens and it gets a bit sweeter, as the prickly fir scent dissipates. The incense is not the most clear smelling (it doesn’t outright read as an incense perfume to me, because there is so much going on), but I really adore all the layers in this and find it fun to wear. 4/5
Noki - (lychee, mango, mint, rhubarb, cassis, sandalwood, ambergris.)*
I found this one really benefits from some rest! When I first tried it on, it was a very watery, sweet mango, and I found the mint was kind of muddling it? The combo of lychee and mango was not very apparent but it was juicy and bright in a general sense. After resting, it was less watered down. It became more of an almost unripe mango + bright lychee, tempered by mint, with a touch of tartness and green from rhubarb and cassis, not overwhelmingly sweet but with a fun tart poppiness. Something (I suspect the mint, still) is keeping this from reaching its full Juicy Sweet potential, but as an avoider of the Cloying, i find this works in the perfume’s favor. The drydown is a sweet mango + creamy sandalwood, it doesn’t morph much. I can smell the sandalwood better from further away, as it’s a bit subtle. Very intriguing, will be wearing this a ton in the summer! 4/5
Velvetine - (ambergris, cypress, vanilla, clove, labdanum, fir.)*
Thank god the clove isn’t overly strong here! (Not the biggest clove fan). On first sniff, I get something akin to deep, dried red fruits, something a bit herbal. It reminds me a bit of dried fruit leather, with maybe a touch of honey. I’m not sure whether I think of it more as “fruit leather” (like the snack) or “fruit Leather” (like leather which is kinda fruity) because both can apply here. More of the forest aspect of the scent reveals itself as the perfume dries, and it seems very subtly smoky to me? I’m wondering if that’s the cypress. It’s cuddly, not smothering, but there’s an intriguing “cool” aspect to this, which I definitely did not see before resting. After a bit, the overtly fruity leather combo gives way to a more vanilla backing, and it becomes this cuddly, clear vanilla with some of the lightly smoky greens. There’s a slight tartness from the opening but it’s much smoother and…velvetine now! The dry down is a warm vanilla. Simple and comforting, I’m not huge into the opening but really like the drydown. 4/5
Juniperus - (Juniper Berry, Lemon Peel Absolute, Rosemary, Juniper Scale, Lavender, Juniper Wood, Sandalwood, Patchouli)
The free sample that came with my order! I was a bit scared as I am not the Biggest fan of lemon notes especially. When I first applied it, it was certainly a bright lemon, on the base of something light and almost cucumbery. Luckily for me, the lemon soon faded and gave way to a creamy green scent. It’s a bit of a light, simple scent but I enjoyed it and found it refreshing on these warm spring days. That said, it didn’t change that much with rest, and I found it to be the least long lived out of everything I tried. 3/5
Overall, I had a good experience with Pineward! It was interesting to see that common thread connecting many of these fragrances. In particular, Brokilän, Caravansary, Fanghorn II, and Murkwood all had those shared resinous + green components that required me to think about how to describe them in relation to each other, otherwise the descriptions would all sound the same coming from me! I would say if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Brokilän, but I also find myself reaching towards Caravansary, Noki, and Murkwood! Perhaps the weather is also the reason for that…I’m really looking forward to trying other Pineward scents in the future, and seeing what else they come up with.
Thanks for reading! Now time to work on some DSH reviews...

2024.05.20 01:44 scorpion3510 Walkable, community oriented suburbs (recommendation)

Hi y'all!
My spouse and I were considering the Chicago metro as a possible place to relocate.
She would be working at either Univ. of Chicago med or Northwestern Univ. medical. I'm WFH but MAYBE will have to go into the loop every blue moon. I'm looking for a place not more than 40-45 minutes commute during rush hour, one way.
Two pre-school aged kids so school will be a factor at some point. SFH, 4+ bedroom, budget around $750k max.
More importantly, a place that's walkable and community oriented. Easy to meet neighbors, where I can shovel their walkway if they need it, parks, restaurants, forest preserves, front porches, ect. Train station would be a plus.
Does such a place exist or is this just fanciful thinking?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

2024.05.19 22:52 CDown01 Eagles Peak Pt.5

Previous part
I stood in my doorway, frozen to the spot as Shaoni walked past me, into my house.
“Weren’t you going to invite me in?”
Shaoni cooed at me, somehow making the arbitrary question sound like a threat.
“I uh… what can I get you.”
I stammered out, automatically reverting to subservient. I know it sounds bad but when you’ve seen what I’ve seen her do you listen first, ask questions later.
“Is water alright? It’s all I’ve got since I only just moved here because… well I guess you know why already.”
I said, wanting to keep the orange juice I was currently hiding behind me in the fridge for myself.
“The visions? Yes I do know about them. It’s what drew all of you here, just like I wanted. Though you weren’t supposed to see the stage yet, none of you were.”
She said, narrowing her eyes at me, presumably because of my earlier expedition into the mine.
“Why do you keep saying “you” like there’s more than one of me?”
I asked, finally working up the confidence to question her.
“Because there is, do you really think you’re the only one I marked? Keith your a special case yes, but not that special.”
“Special case? What do you..”
“If you let me finish I’m getting to that.”
Shaoni cracked back at me, I could feel the pressure in the room rise with her temper.
“Sorry ma’am… it just slipped out.”
She seemed to find my knee-jerk formal apology amusing and the pressure in the room returned to normal.
“I offered several people the same deal I offered you, most accepted. These are the others I refer to, all of which are here or on their way here now. That’s what the dreams, visions, whatever you’d like to call them, were for.”
“So you wanted us here, all together in this one specific town, why?”
“The trials of course, if you remember you agreed to take a burden from me. I guess I would describe it more accurately as a gift but it has become a burden for me.”
“What is it?”
“Now where’s the fun in telling you now? Besides your smart enough, I’m sure you’ll figure it out on your own.”
She answered, smiling devilishly at me and sending little pin pricks of ice down my spine. I let the conversation fall silent for a bit, watching Shaoni sip absentmindedly at the glass of water I’d given her before I asked another question.
“So what exactly are these trials for?”
“I want to use them as a selection process, it separates the wheat from the chaff as the saying goes. Only one of you will take on my burden and I want to make sure its the right one.”
“Ok, that makes sense but I’ve still got one more thing. Why did you say I was special before?”
I inquired, as Shaoni got up and started to leave.
“Well, because this is all new to you, you have no idea of the forces really at play in the world, the “supernatural” is what you’d call it. You’re at a particular disadvantage because you didn’t know what you were getting into so I figured I’d help out of the kindness of my heart. In addition to that, many of those I’ve chosen came from my own followers. You are one of the few I found on my travels that accepted my deal. I believe in keeping things fair, and so I came to warn you of what’s to come.”
Shaoni told me as she walked out the door without so much as a goodbye. The storm that had been brewing outside left with her, dropping bits of cracked branches and loose leaves to the ground as she got further and further away. I finally realized I was still standing at my front door, glued in place watching her. Once I closed and locked the door I heard a shrill screech pierce the night as Shaoni shed her human appearance and took to the skies as I saw a single shiny grey feather flutter to the ground.
I didn’t get much sleep that night, I didn’t even try. After something like Shaoni waltzing into my home like she owned the place and telling me I’m about to be part of some kind of “trials”, I just gave up on sleep that night. What I was worried about more than anything was the fact that I didn’t have a choice. Sure, she had never said that out right but if she showed up to tell me the trials were starting and I said no, that wouldn’t go well. I’d probably end up like those men in Imalone, just ashes on the wind. There was something she wasn’t saying as well. Shaoni wanted to flaunt that there was some sort of reward at the end of this, that the whole process would help her select a “worthy candidate”. But the reward was also the burden I had agreed to take. If whatever it was was something she wanted to get rid of why would anyone look at it as a reward? Something just wasn’t adding up in my head so I decided not to think about it for a bit. I instead I threw on some clothes as the sun finally rose and made my way over to Bianca’s house to pick up my backpack that she still had.
“Hey there Frank. Where’s Stein I wanted to ask how that research was coming, and has anyone seen Bianca?”
I said as soon as I’d walked in the front door. Rocco was eating something out of a bowl on the counter top and shot to attention as he saw me.
“What do you just live here now?”
He remarked, whirling around to face me. Frank looked up from the paper he’d been reading at the counter and gave me a half hearted wave.
“Stein’s in the basement testing a few samples of thunderbird feathers Tuck brought in.”
“You know Tuck? The mountain that just so happens to run a bar in town, that Tuck?”
“Yes of course, he’s helped us immensely with developing a suppressant for lycanthropy.”
“I… we’ll unpack that one later I guess but I’ve got too find Bianca first, she still has something of mine. Let Stein know I’m looking for him if he comes back up.”
I told Frank as he nodded in acknowledgment and I made my way over to the stairs leading up to the second floor.
“Oh god dammit, I just got that!”
I yelled to no-one in particular as I knocked on Bianca’s bedroom door. I heard a crash behind it as Bianca came flying towards me, throwing open the door and almost smacking me in the process.
“What the hell is going on why are you here! And what did you just get?!”
She belted out at me, apparently startled by my outburst. She had a long loose t-shirt on and maybe something on underneath that, I wasn’t going to check. I must’ve turned crab red as I saw her but it didn’t stop me from telling her what I just pieced together.
“Their names, Frank and Stein, Frankenstein. They did that on purpose didn’t they? I can’t believe I didn’t pick up on that sooner!”
“What are you… oooh, OOOH! I’ve been around them how many years and I’m just picking up on that too.”
She said, sounding a little disappointed and smacking herself in the head with the palm of her hand.
“So what’re you doing here anyways Keith?”
“You still have my backpack from yesterday and I could use that back.”
“Oh sure I forgot about that, come in.”
She said holding open the door for me and causing her shirt to hike up a bit, She did not in fact have anything other than what you’d expect on under it.
“Ummm… do you maybe want to get dressed first?”
Bianca turned redder than I’d ever seen anyone get in an instant. Her eyes Immediately started glowing and she slammed the door shut, apparently just realizing she had answered the door in nothing but a T-shirt and underwear. I heard of muffled groan of embarrassment from the other side of the door and decided to leave her to it.
When I came back downstairs into the living room Frank and Stein where waiting for me on the couch. It was a sight to see, two old scientists sitting in the middle of a lavish black leather couch that wrapped the outer edge of the room. The two looked out of place, like a time traveler trying desperately to look normal in a society they knew nothing about.
“Before you guys start I’ve got to know, did you do that intentionally?”
“Did we do what, what are you talking about?”
They both asked in unison.
“The names, Frank and Stein, did you do that on purpose?”
Frank smiled at this and looked toward Stein who seemed to be fuming.
“It’s been 60 years since I’ve heard that question and no, its purely coincidental. We just so happen to share similar names with this Frankenstein”
Stein replied, actually shaking with anger. Frank on the other hand, seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself. In light of this I decided to push my luck just a little further.
“Ok, but I’m still going to call Rocco Frankenstein’s monster from now on, I can’t just pass up that opportunity.”
Frank laughed at this and Stein shook his head in disappointment.
“Children, both you.”
“Oh come now Stein, even you have to admit its a little humorous.”
“I will not be compared to some fantasy doctor and their failed facsimile of life! Rocco is a proper experiment with guidelines and uses that monster from the story is just a harebrained pet project!”
Stein fumed, seemingly offended at the concept of being compared to doctor Frankenstein. After a short tirade, none of which I really want to repeat here, we got Stein calmed down. Then the two got me seated and asked a question I wasn’t expecting.
“Do you know why we decided to settle down in this town in the first place?”
The question took me by surprise, I had assumed they just ended up here for no particular reason. Like a tumble weed being blown across the desert. They were here now caught on a fence or something but I always got the sense the wind would blow them along to somewhere else eventually. I hadn’t given much thought as to why they would be here at all. My vacant stare must’ve clued them into the fact that I had no idea how to answer the question.
“Let me rephrase, do you have any idea why things like Bianca or Tuck or even us seem to be concentrated here?”
Stein asked again, a calm tone to his voice like he was explaining something to a child.
“Tuck? What does Tuck have to do with this? I get you two are supernatural researchers and Bianca is a succubus but Tuck is just a really, really string guy right?”
I shakily asked, slowly drawing a connection to what Frank said about Tuck and lycanthropy when I came in.
“Tuck is a werewolf, a repentant one but a werewolf nonetheless.”
“That… actually would check out, It would definitely explain why the guy is built like the Rock’s bigger cousin. But what exactly are you getting at?”
“This town Keith, There’s a reason it attracts people like us and the Thunderbird is a big part of that. It had been sleeping in the mines as far as Frank was able to tell, once it woke up it caused the collapse and it made a huge stir. Obviously reports came out about this massive thing coming out of the ground and talking flight but you’ll never find any of them. The government stepped in to help Eagles peak cover up its existence, if people knew about the Thunderbird there would be uproars and questions as to what else was out there, questions no-one really would’ve had answers too. Instead they buried it and tried to bury most records of this town, turning it into a haven for the supernatural, especially those who would rather be left alone.”
Stein’s lecture made sense, if the town was basically wiped off the map as far as recent information goes it would explain its small size. I really hadn’t seen anyone in town besides those people getting off the bus the day I met Tuck and a few employees at local stores I went to. But not all of them could’ve been supernatural beings right?
“So are you trying to say everyone in town is some kind of what… supernatural entity?”
“Nothing as grand as that but there’s certainly more supernatural beings than usual concentrated in this town. Even some of the normal people have ties to the supernatural here. It’s a place were people who know about these things can pass through without to much scrutiny. What’s more interesting though is the other Thunderbird sightings we were able to dig up. Almost all of them lead to a town like this, taken off the usual map with a barley visible digital presence. Tiny little nowhere places that aren’t known for much and never show up on the news. The Thunderbird seems to be making these sanctuary’s for the supernatural throughout the world. It doesn’t seem to monitor these places afterwards but they certainly never recover from the coverups after the Thunderbird makes an appearance.”
Stein continued to lecture, speaking just as much with his hands as he did with his words.
“Has she ever come back to any of these sanctuaries she’s created.”
“She!? You don’t mean the woman you saw in Imalone? I had chalked her up to a stress induced hallucination.”
I had to briefly explain to Stein that I had not in fact hallucinated the naked woman that ultimately turned out to be Shaoni, to his displeasure.
“So you saw this woman then?”
“Yeah, in the cave attached to what I’d have to guess were the mines. She even showed up at my house last night.”
“It… she, talked to you?”
“She said that there was going to be some sort of trials to see who takes on this burden of her’s. The whole thing was really unclear if I’m honest.”
“So she’s coming back then, not only that but she’s in the town or the forest right now. I don’t get to say this often but I really don’t know what’s going to happen with this Keith. Frank and I will keep an eye on what we can but we’re researchers, if she decides to pull you into these trials we won’t be much help.”
Stein said, growing concerning on his face. I don’t think seeing Stein in this state did anything to assure me. This is someone who worked on the wrong side of world war 2 and he seemed scared by the thought of what Shaoni might be up to. It was at least nice to know someone would be monitoring the situation when I got myself killed.
“I could go with him.”
An unexpected voice cut through the silence of the room, Bianca’s voice. She had wandered down from her room wearing a black leather jacket paired with a tight red shirt and ratty jeans, my ratty jeans I noticed. She had the backpack she owed me in one hand and her eyes locked on us.
“What?”
We all said, in shock of what Bianca had just offered.
“I could go, watch your back and see what’s going on with these trials. I’m familiar enough with the supernatural, not as much as Frank or Stein but I could help.”
She said with raw unfiltered confidence that was unusual for her.
“I couldn’t ask you to do that, I told you the story, you know what Shaoni is capable of.”
I bargained, hoping to keep her out of the line of fire for some reason. I knew it would probably be smarter to bring her with me if I did get forced into these trials but some protective instinct kicked in. I’d seen her barley able to keep herself together just talking about her past and shut down when someone grabbed her. I didn’t want to see her get hurt trying to look out for me. Her past obviously still effected her in a big way. Another part of me wanted to bring her with me just to see her fight against the power her past still held over her. When we were on the way to that mine yesterday she finally seemed alive. Bianca wasn’t just this this scared person living in a gilded cage with two people who took her in like a kicked puppy. Yesterday she was her own person again, if only for a little bit.
“Look I can’t stay here doing nothing forever, besides you helped me out watching the house way back when you first got into town. You didn’t hold the fact I manipulated you into it against me and you never really cared about what I was. I at least owe you this Keith, please.”
Bianca begged, I didn’t feel like she was trying to pul me one way or another this time, the choice was my own. I could also tell it was hard for her to give me a choice, her nature was to just use her power and make me agree with her. That single fact meant more to me than whatever fight was going on in my head, I nodded to tell her I agreed.
Frank and Stein weren’t particularly thrilled with the idea of Bianca watching out for me. They were worried it put her in too much danger. Despite the situation surrounding those three I could tell Frank and Stein really did care for her, or at the very least worried about her. She may not realize it but she was like a daughter to them, anyone could see that, anyone but her apparently. Or maybe she had closed herself off from the world so much to try and survive on her own that she just couldn’t bring herself to realize it anymore. I think that’s the more likely option but it begged the question. Why exactly does she keep going out of her way for me?
Bianca managed to convince them to let her keep an eye on me. Thanks in no small part to the fact that she claimed living anywhere near Rocco for prolonged periods of time was hazardous to her health. At which point almost as if on cue, Rocco shot out of a wall. Not off of it or out from around, no straight out of the wall sending plaster flying like shrapnel. Right after this we smelled the beginnings of an electrical fire. Rocco ran back into the room and jumped back through the hole in the wall with a fire extinguisher. Frank and Stein lost their minds at this point and went to find the proper equipment to deal with that. They agreed with Bianca on the spot after that one. Rocco claimed he was “trying to update the wiring in the house”, whatever that meant but you could never tell with him. Once everything had calmed down I headed over to the kitchen to make lunch for myself. I settled for a bologna and mustard sandwich and sat down to eat. As soon as I took a bite of the sandwich my phone rang with a number I didn’t expect a call from, Mom.
“Hi, what’s going on?”
“Are you ok, You never call, I just got your message.”
My mother Carla said, in that worried but angry tone only mothers can pull off.
“I’m fine mom I just wanted to let you know what was going on with me, I don’t think I ever told you I was moving and I didn’t want you to worry.”
Bianca walked into the kitchen at this point in the conversation and looked at me. I put my finger to my lips and shushed her. She just sat down across from me and took a bite out of MY sandwich.
“You didn’t, I know I don’t see you much and your fine on your own but I still worry. We were never the closest but that doesn’t mean I don’t wan to know If you’re moving halfway across the country on a whim.”
“I know mom, I know. A lot of things happened at once and it was such short notice I just… forgot.”
“I understand… just call me next time alright, and if you ever just want to talk I’m here. Just because we weren’t all that close doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear from you now and then. Anyways I have to get back to work.”
“Oh, ok Just… how’s dad doing?”
I sighed knowing the answer to my question already.
“He’s… he’s the same Keith, Love you.”
And with that Carla hung up.
Bianca eyed me with a mildly stunned look on her face. Like she just realized I was born not raised in a test tube somewhere.
“That was your mom?”
She asked, pointing at the phone in my hand and still eating the sandwich I had made for myself.
“Yes, Oh come on give me that!”
I yelled, reaching for the sandwich in her hand. She laughed and pulled it away, finishing it. She tried to speak with a mouthful of sandwich but I couldn’t make out a thing till she gave herself a minute to chew.
“I haven’t talked to my mom since the whole thing with Brooke. She never approved and that was that, I went my way and she went her’s.”
“What about your dad?”
I asked her, suddenly not as mad about her stealing my food.
“I never really knew him. Apparently he left when I was really young but that’s about all I know.”
“Is there a single question I can ask about you that won’t just leave me feeling sorry I had a moderately normal life before this? Really I just… that’s terrible.”
Bianca looked a little sullen as she thought about her family, her real family. I realized that as strange as this whole relationship with Frank and Stein was it was the closest thing she had to something stable. Hell, I might be the first real friend she’s had outside of the house in years.
“Tell you what, I’m suddenly hungry for some reason so why don’t we head down to the Eagle’s Roost and get something to eat?”
I glared at her just a little bit as I said that first part.
“It’s like 1o’clock now I don’t think Tuck opens up till 5 or so.”
“Well I’ve got a few questions for him now, besides last time I went down there early too and he was just hanging out behind the bar, didn’t seem to mind either. Wait, you know him? He didn’t really look at you when he saved us yesterday, come to think of it he barley mentioned you.”
“Yeah I’ve seen him coming in and out of the house when he helps Stein with his experiments, giving blood and tissue samples to him, that sort of thing. I don’t know why he didn’t say anything to me. Maybe cause he thought Frank and Stein didn’t know I was out there so he just didn’t want to stick his toe in that situation?”
She had to think for a second about that last part, furrowing her brow and shrugging when she couldn’t come up with anything better.
“Could be it, anyways its just one more thing I can ask him. So are you coming with me or what?”
“Yeah sure, just let me pack a few things.”
“Pack a few things? What do you mean it’s just…”
But Bianca was already running up the stairs back towards her room.

Yeah, it was a lonely week again, and the mood was depressing. The Week, The Depression and the Comics Part 55
Somehow none of us had time for each other, especially because work and other shit didn't let me and my friends meet up. I mostly played video games anyway, the Bridge curse 2, Abiotic Factor, Farthest Frontier and No Rest for the wicked. But mostly I read how to see it or watched TV. But hey, my cat stays with good company.
But otherwise I'm also worried financially again. Rents are going up again in my area, shitty gentrification. It's kind of ironic that a bunch of privileged students move into your block to act cool and rebellious because they're not like the proles, but by doing so they're hurting those who are below them. And when you tell them that you're not the same, they get really angry. I mean my ex-boyfriends, who I'm just friends with now, once told me that the middle class loved to shout when they were the victims of the problem of capitalism, but often they are not interested in alternatives or at least looking for those Especially since they also like to involuntarily hit people who are below them. If it was at least involuntary, supposedly.
And otherwise my account at 2000AD won't work again, which is why you unfortunately not seeing any British comics here this week. But I'm trying to fix it because I love these British comics. And otherwise I'll try to further refine my cooking skills.
Well, I'm trying to get more sleep. My cat is really the best antidepressant in this case and in the end always keep it in front of your eyes, At some point the sun will shine again, and if not there are other light sources.

2024.05.19 21:24 RichRuzz 36 EST looking for PC gaming friends

Hey there, I’ve posted here on/off before to some moderate success over the years and found some chill people and now looking to build some more. (Hopefully!)
I have a TON of PC games being like 1k+ on Steam alone, and just generally looking for solid game suggestions, or others to play with at times or fun co-op or competitive experiences.
I’ve recently been playing Star Citizen and a bunch of other things, but always down to start up a Stardew Valley game, Phasmo/Forewarned/Escape the Backrooms, Golf with your friends, or Grounded, Abiotic Factor, DayZ, FO76, Helldivers 2, really just depends since I have soooo many games and I pretty much play everything from racing, to simulation, adventure, RPG, competitive and all the in-between.
Only caveat is I’m like pretty deep in on/off surgery on my hands/elbows/shoulder and some other things so it’s hit and miss on my pain levels and surgeries I’m bouncing between for some sports injury and life stuff.
Anyways if any questions, or suggestions, or have inquiries about games I have feel free to stalk my list at RichRuzz on Steam, or add me on Discord at the same (RichRuzz)

2024.05.19 20:11 Sweet-Count2557 Maldives Island Is Sinking

Maldives Island Is Sinking
Maldives Island Is Sinking As we stand on the fragile shores of the Maldives, it becomes painfully clear that this paradise is slipping away like sand through our fingers. With rising sea levels encroaching upon our beloved islands, the Maldives is facing an existential threat - the metaphorical tide of climate change relentlessly eroding the very foundation of our nation. But what does this sinking mean for the Maldivian people and the delicate ecosystem that calls these islands home? And can we find a way to stay afloat in the face of this looming crisis?Let us embark on a journey to explore the depths of the Maldives' sinking predicament, and perhaps discover a glimmer of hope amidst the rising waters.Key TakeawaysMaldives is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels due to its low maximum ground elevation and estimated rise in sea levels. The Maldives government has taken initiatives to combat climate change and strengthen resilience, including aiming to become carbon neutral.Overfishing and waste management issues exacerbate the impacts of climate change in the Maldives.International cooperation is crucial in addressing the sinking crisis in the Maldives, with a need for collective action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Rising Sea Levels Threaten the MaldivesRising sea levels pose a significant threat to the Maldives, an archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean. With over 1,000 coral islands and a maximum ground elevation of just 2.4 meters, the Maldives is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels. An estimated rise of 20 to 30 centimeters in the next 20 to 40 years could have catastrophic consequences for the nation. The effects of rising sea levels are already evident in the Maldives. By 2021, 90% of the islands have experienced severe erosion, and 97% of the country's land no longer has access to fresh groundwater. This loss of land and freshwater resources has dire implications for the Maldivian people, who heavily rely on these natural resources for their livelihoods and survival. To address the challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels, the Maldives has undertaken various initiatives. The nation has set ambitious targets to become carbon neutral, eliminate or offset greenhouse gas emissions, and implement measures to combat sea level rise. Additionally, the Maldives has focused on mass tourism as a development strategy to generate revenue and strengthen its resilience to climate threats.Despite these efforts, the Maldives faces numerous challenges in the face of climate change. Overfishing, waste management, and the decline of natural environments and biodiversity are among the issues exacerbated by climate change and human activities. It's crucial for the international community to take collective action on climate change to support the Maldives and other vulnerable nations in adapting to and mitigating the impacts of rising sea levels. Failure to do so could result in the loss of a unique and culturally rich nation.Impact on the Maldivian PopulationThe impact of the sinking Maldives on the population is significant and multifaceted. Rising sea levels not only threaten the physical displacement of people but also pose a grave risk to their livelihoods, particularly those dependent on fishing and tourism. The scarcity of fresh groundwater further exacerbates the challenges faced by the Maldivian population, affecting their daily lives and overall health. As the government takes steps to combat climate change and its consequences, it's crucial to prioritize the well-being and resilience of the Maldivian people, ensuring their safety and stability in the face of these environmental challenges.Population DisplacementPopulation displacement in the Maldives due to the sinking of the islands caused by sea level rise is a pressing concern that requires immediate attention. As the Maldives consists of low-lying islands, the rising sea levels pose a significant threat to the population's safety and livelihoods. Efforts have been made to combat this impact, such as making the Maldives carbon neutral and implementing a National Adaptation Programme of Action. The construction of an artificial, elevated island called Hulhumalé has also been undertaken. Additionally, innovative solutions like floating homes have been explored as an alternative living option. However, environmental challenges such as overfishing, waste management, and damage to coral reefs further exacerbate the situation. The socio-cultural impacts of population displacement also raise concerns about preserving the unique Maldivian culture and identity. This situation necessitates comprehensive strategies and immediate action to address the challenges faced by the Maldivian population.Efforts to Combat Population DisplacementEnvironmental ChallengesSocio-Cultural ImpactsMaking the Maldives carbon neutralOverfishingPreservation of cultureNational Adaptation Programme of ActionWaste managementLoss of cultural heritageConstruction of elevated island (Hulhumalé)Damage to coral reefsAdaptation to new livingExploration of floating homesenvironmentsLoss of LivelihoodsThe economic impact of overfishing and the need for fishermen in the Maldives to travel further into the ocean to find fish has resulted in the loss of livelihoods and a decline in the fishing industry. This has had a significant impact on the Maldivian population, particularly those who depend on fishing for their income and traditional way of life. The sinking Maldives and the rising seas exacerbate this problem, making it even more challenging for fishermen to sustain their livelihoods.Decreased income for fishermen due to overfishing and the need to venture further into the ocean.Disruption of the fishing industry, leading to economic hardship for those dependent on fishing.Loss of traditional way of life and cultural identity for Maldivian fishermen. These factors highlight the dire consequences of overfishing and the sinking Maldives on the livelihoods of the Maldivian population, necessitating urgent action to address these issues.Increased VulnerabilityWith the loss of land and infrastructure due to severe erosion and the critical water shortage caused by the lack of access to fresh groundwater, the vulnerability of the Maldivian population is further exacerbated by the impact of climate change on coral reefs.Rising sea levels and increasing ocean temperatures have led to significant damage to the coral reefs surrounding the Maldives. Approximately 60% of these reefs have been bleached, posing a threat to marine life and the fishing industry, which is a vital source of income for many Maldivians. The deterioration of coral reefs not only disrupts the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem but also affects the availability of fish, a staple food for the population. This, combined with the loss of land and the critical water shortage, intensifies the vulnerability of the Maldivian people, who rely heavily on these resources for their livelihoods. The impact of climate change on the Maldives highlights the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies to ensure the well-being and sustainability of the population.Environmental Consequences of Sinking IslandsAs the Maldives Island sinks, the environmental consequences are becoming increasingly apparent. The sinking of islands, such as the Maldives, is primarily driven by the effects of climate change. Rising sea levels and increased frequency of extreme weather events are causing significant damage to this island nation. The environmental consequences of sinking islands can be devastating, with long-lasting effects. Here are three key consequences:Loss of Biodiversity: The Maldives is home to diverse marine ecosystems, including coral reefs and seagrass beds. As the island sinks, these habitats are being submerged, leading to the loss of crucial biodiversity. Coral reefs, in particular, are highly sensitive to changes in water depth and quality, and their destruction can have a cascading effect on the entire marine ecosystem.Coastal Erosion and Land Loss: Rising sea levels contribute to coastal erosion, resulting in the loss of valuable land. The Maldives, being a low-lying island nation, is particularly vulnerable to land loss. As the land disappears, it not only affects the livelihoods of the local population but also exacerbates the risk of flooding and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources.Disruption of Natural Processes: Sinking islands disrupt natural processes that are vital for the functioning of ecosystems. For instance, the sinking of islands can alter tidal patterns and water flow, affecting the distribution of nutrients and sediment. These disruptions can have far-reaching consequences for the overall health and productivity of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. The sinking of the Maldives Island serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of climate change on vulnerable island nations. Urgent action is needed to mitigate these consequences and protect the environment for future generations.Strategies for Mitigating the Sinking CrisisWhat strategies can be implemented to mitigate the sinking crisis of islands like the Maldives? The Maldives government, in response to the threat of rising sea levels and climate change, has been taking proactive measures to address the sinking crisis. These strategies can be categorized into three main areas: coastal protection, sustainable development, and international cooperation.Coastal protection is crucial in safeguarding the islands from the encroaching sea. The Maldives government has been investing in building seawalls and barriers to reduce the impact of waves and erosion. Additionally, they have implemented beach nourishment programs, where sand is replenished on the shores to counteract erosion and maintain the natural coastline.Sustainable development is another key strategy to mitigate the sinking crisis. The Maldives government has been focusing on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. They have also implemented strict regulations on waste management and sustainable tourism practices to minimize environmental degradation.International cooperation is vital in addressing the sinking crisis, as it is a global issue that requires collective action. 2024.05.19 15:49 Marc_wastheone Comprehensive Overview of Grass

Grass, belonging to the Poaceae family (also known as Gramineae), is one of the most widespread and ecologically significant plant families on Earth. This family includes a vast array of species, ranging from those that make up our lawns and pastures to the staple food crops that sustain much of the world's population, such as wheat, rice, and corn. Grasses are crucial for various reasons, encompassing their unique botanical characteristics, their ecological roles, their evolutionary history, their cultivation and uses, and the challenges they face. This comprehensive overview aims to provide an in-depth understanding of these aspects.
Grasses exhibit a distinct growth habit and structural anatomy that set them apart from other plant families. The root systems of grasses are typically fibrous, forming a dense network of roots that are excellent at stabilizing soil and accessing water and nutrients from the upper soil layers. This characteristic is especially vital in preventing soil erosion and promoting soil health.
The stems of grasses, known as culms, are generally hollow and segmented by nodes. The internodes, or the spaces between these nodes, can vary in length and are crucial for species identification. The leaves of grasses are usually slender and elongated with parallel veins. They emerge from the nodes and are sheathed around the stem. At the base of the leaf, there is often a ligule, a small membranous or hairy appendage that helps in differentiating between various grass species.
The reproductive structures of grasses are also unique. Grass flowers, or florets, are typically small and inconspicuous, grouped into spikelets. These spikelets are arranged in different types of inflorescences such as spikes, racemes, or panicles. The flowers of grasses are generally adapted for wind pollination, a characteristic that is reflected in their structure, which lacks large, colorful petals. Instead, they have specialized structures that facilitate the dispersal of pollen by the wind.
Most grasses reproduce sexually through seeds. The flowers produce pollen that is carried by the wind to fertilize other plants, resulting in seed formation. Many grasses can also reproduce vegetatively through rhizomes (underground stems) or stolons (above-ground runners). This method of asexual reproduction allows grasses to spread and colonize large areas efficiently, contributing to their dominance in many ecosystems.
Grasses play an indispensable role in soil conservation. Their dense root systems are incredibly effective at binding the soil, reducing the risk of erosion caused by wind and water. This is particularly important in regions prone to desertification or where the soil has been exposed due to deforestation or agricultural activities. By stabilizing the soil, grasses help maintain soil health and prevent the loss of fertile topsoil.
In terms of climate regulation, grasslands serve as significant carbon sinks. Through the process of photosynthesis, grasses absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and soil. This carbon sequestration process helps mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Additionally, grasslands influence local and regional climates by affecting evapotranspiration rates, which is the combined process of evaporation from the soil and transpiration from plants.
Grasslands support a remarkable diversity of life, providing habitat and food for numerous animal species, including insects, birds, and mammals. The structure of grassland ecosystems supports a variety of plant species, creating a complex web of interactions and dependencies. This biodiversity is crucial for the resilience of these ecosystems, enabling them to withstand and recover from environmental changes and disturbances.
Grasses also play a vital role in the water cycle. They help in the infiltration of rainwater into the soil, reducing runoff and promoting groundwater recharge. By slowing down water movement, grasses help prevent flooding and maintain the moisture levels in the soil, which is essential for the health of the ecosystem and for agricultural productivity.
The evolutionary history of grasses is relatively recent compared to other plant families. Grasses evolved around 66 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Their rise to dominance is closely linked to the cooling and drying of the Earth's climate, which favored the spread of grasslands over forests. The diversification of grasses has been driven by their ability to adapt to a wide range of environments, from tropical savannas and temperate prairies to arid steppes and alpine meadows.
In agriculture, grasses are indispensable. They include some of the world's most important food crops, such as wheat, rice, maize (corn), barley, and oats. These cereal grains provide a significant portion of the global caloric intake and are fundamental to the diets of billions of people. The cultivation of these crops has shaped human civilization and continues to be a cornerstone of global food security.
Many grass species are also cultivated as forage for livestock. Species like alfalfa, ryegrass, and clover are commonly grown for grazing, hay, and silage. These forage grasses are essential for the livestock industry, providing the necessary nutrition for animals and supporting dairy and meat production.
Beyond food and forage, grasses are being explored as sources of bioenergy. Species like switchgrass and miscanthus are considered promising candidates for biofuel production due to their high biomass yield. These grasses can be converted into biofuels, providing a renewable energy source that can help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
In landscaping, grasses are widely used for creating lawns, parks, golf courses, and sports fields. Turf grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, Bermuda grass, and fescue are selected for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and ability to withstand foot traffic and mowing. These grasses play a significant role in urban and suburban environments, contributing to the aesthetic and recreational value of these areas.
Grasses are also used in erosion control and land rehabilitation. They are often planted to stabilize soil and restore degraded lands. For example, vetiver grass is used for its deep root system, which can prevent landslides and rehabilitate mining sites and other disturbed areas. By stabilizing the soil and improving its structure, grasses help restore the ecological balance and promote the recovery of degraded landscapes.
Despite their many benefits, grasses face several challenges. Some grass species can become invasive, outcompeting native species and disrupting local ecosystems. For instance, kudzu and cogongrass have spread aggressively in some regions, requiring significant management efforts to control their growth and prevent ecological damage.
Grasses are also susceptible to pests and diseases. Fungal diseases like rusts and smuts, as well as pests such as armyworms and grasshoppers, can cause significant damage to grass crops and turf. Effective pest and disease management strategies are essential to protect these valuable resources.
Climate change poses additional challenges for grassland ecosystems and agricultural practices. Shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns can affect the growth and distribution of grass species, impacting food security and ecosystem stability. Droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events can stress grasslands, reducing their productivity and resilience.
Adopting sustainable management practices is crucial for maintaining healthy grasslands and ensuring the long-term viability of grass-based agriculture. Practices such as rotational grazing, integrated pest management, conservation tillage, and the use of drought-resistant grass varieties can help mitigate the impacts of environmental stressors and promote the sustainability of grasslands.
Grasses are an indispensable component of Earth's ecosystems and human agriculture. Their diverse roles range from stabilizing soils and sequestering carbon to providing food and forage. Understanding the complexities of grass biology, ecology, and management is essential for harnessing their benefits while addressing the challenges they face in a changing world. By promoting sustainable practices and responsible stewardship, we can ensure that grasslands continue to thrive and support both natural ecosystems and human livelihoods.

2024.05.19 14:49 BurningGore Things I've noticed this season so far

  1. It seems like they've shortened the horse spur duration which makes the horse feel incredibly bad. Anyone noticed this or do I need more grass in my diet...
  2. Several very strong builds that tear through all content...except for bosses. I understand bosses being more difficult than normal fodder, but being gated simply because I can't kill bosses when I know full well I could go up another 20-30 pit levels feels bad. My frozen orb sorc destroys the entire pit until I get to the boss and then I'm useless. More glyphs for each character that bring focus into single target damage? Something that we can add to our builds to level out that damage some.
  3. Gold costs...all of the gameplay and upgrades and codex swapping feels very smooth. I'm getting materials as I need them, not having to wait for tortured souls etc...but my god am I constantly out of gold. Why must they always be throttling people?
  4. Now that helltide is an hour long demon rave of insane proportions, dungeons feel boring? Not saying they have to increase monster density but the dungeons need something to add a little "fun" factor.
  5. I'm having a hard time with uniques. On one hand the aspect on the item is needed for my build, however on the other hand a legendary with a greater affix or 3 and 2 good tempers is almost always better. Uniques need something to bring them into equal territory as pimped out legendary items.

2024.05.19 11:39 Tall-Ring302 make DOTA PVP again

In the state that it’s in, DOTA is an unplayable and unwatchable PVE game. The only way to make both playing and watching dotA fun right now, is to nerf the jungle GPM and boost kill reward earnings. Most games right now look like a laning where on all lanes opponents stare at each other and kill creeps like the Cold War, and then go to farm jungle for 40 minutes. Whoever emerges from the forest first, with their key items, wins the game by a steamroll. The reason it’s this way, is because getting out of jungle and losing out on jungle GPM for a chance to get kills is simply not worth it, because the reward you get for a fight is as much if not less if you were farming the whole time, and if you lose you lose by a huge margin, due to not only losing the fight and feeding gold, but also losing the GPM race for the respawn time. Another reason dotA is not as fun anymore, is because damage options are consistently nerfed. Sometimes I feel like the only dotA developer that plays the game, plays on the support role. Every time the game had a good damage item, it got nerfed. Rapier got nerfed basically by a factor of two, Revenant’s Brooch got nerfed, etc. Every single time. Make dotA a team PVP again. Please valve.

2024.05.19 11:11 Twilightzone777 Big fall out with my mum and her best friend

So I (21f) was out yesterday with my friend. My mum was also out with her cousin and her best friend. My mums friend well call her Carly have been friends for 40 years and have never fell out. My friend was going to a party after we were out so my mum suggested that I come and meet her and her friends for drinks as she had booked a table at restaurant. I said maybe as I was up early for work the next day. After having some drinks with my friends I decided to go and meet with my mum and her friends. I get to the bar before them and it is extremely busy and there is no sign of my mum or her friends. I meet them and we try to go in and the bouncer is not letting us in. We eventually get in and go to the bar to show them our booking. There isn’t an empty table in sight. They get us a table and we sit. The seats are soaking wet and my mums cousin is basically passed out on the table. They ordered drinks and I didn’t want anything. I was getting to the point where I had already had a few drinks and was ready to just call it a night. I told my mum that I was going to head home and she said no and said I would be selfish for leaving. There was a big event on in the city I was living in so I could understand if she was worrying about safety but she said that it would make people think I didn’t want to be with her and her friends. I said okay and stayed. They got food and began eating it. After maybe fifteen minutes I said to my mum I’m going to head and get the train home and that my boyfriend was going to pick me up from the train station. She starts calling me selfish again and telling me how inconsiderate I am then proceeds to say to go home with your boring boyfriend then. She was being quite passive aggressive with me this whole time. When she made the comment about my boyfriend I had had enough and left. I was extremely upset. My mums friends Carly then phones me and tells me to come back as she doesn’t want me to go home myself. I walk back to the bar and she asked me what happened. I told her and we went back into the restaurant together. I sat with Carly and she said to my mum to stop being horrible. This is when everything blows up. My mum starts shouting at the two of us. Charley was saying that my mum shouldn’t have said that about my boyfriend. My mum had had a lot to drink and this was most likely a factor in her reacting this way. I never said my mum was horrible nor did I expect for Carly to say anything. I was just upset and wanted to go home. My mum eventually storms out the restaurant and Carly runs after her. Carly come back after ten minutes saying that she will have to get my mums cousin home herself and how she doesn’t know what’s happening. My mum phones me and tells me to come and meet her. I am extremely upset at this point as these are the two most important women in my life. I go and meet her and she starts shouting at me. She was asking me what I said to Carley and that they had never had an argument before. I told her I told carley what she had said to me. She denied it all and said I was lying. She then starts making personals digs at meant aren’t true or fair to say. My mum phones carley and carley and my mums cousin show up. Everything seems fine again they had a laugh and then my mum starts arguing again. She is now shouting in the middle of the streets. She is saying she hates me and that I was fake crying and that this whole situation was my fault. I was hysterical at this point. My mum won’t let me come home with her even though me and carley were trying to convince her to get a taxi home with us she refused. My mum ended up saying to carley that she was a shot friend because she did remember my grans death anniversary or my mum and dad 25th wedding anniversary (my dad passed a few years ago). My mum then storms off and I stay with carley. Carley wasn’t that bothered about the argument until now as she said my mum had too much to drink and everything would be fine in the morning. But now she was extremely upset. Carley has been through a lot with us she was there for us when my dad and gran died she still to this day stays over at our house sometime we go to her house for Christmas dinner. She is basically an aunt to me. I got home before my mum and told my little sister what had happened. She said to me to be the bigger person and that our mum probably just had too much to drink as my mum can lose her temper quite easily sometimes. My mum was walking home from the train station and asked my sister to come and walk with her. I asked her to ask if I could come too my mum said no she doesn’t want to see me along with some nasty words I won’t repeat. They both come home my mum slams a sore and just keeps yelling at me and telling me to F off. I told her I was sorry for leaving the bar and I asked if we could talk about it and she continued to yell at me. It is now the next day I am currently at work and honestly scared to go home. Can any recommended any advice as I genuinely don’t know what to do in this situation

2024.05.19 07:30 supercheems64 CAMPASAK region: rules for continuing your trip

So you finally decided to leave your home and migrate to a better place, but let me tell you that it will not be easy, Campasak is a "peculiar" region, this god-forsaken region is full of abominations and errors of nature, but it is the only one. path you can take to get out of that damn mountain, Campasak is a region full of endless natural environments, the region has an area of about 400,000 square km so it is very large and it will take you a long time to get out of here. It is extremely dangerous and I don't want to discourage you but very few people have managed to get out of here and only one person came out sane, we call him "the explorer" he is responsible for this list existing, he spent many years documenting and studying the region, but a few years ago he suffered an ambush by some entities and his body turned into a pulp appeared in a sack at the entrance to Campasak. If you want to continue your journey, follow the rules and value his sacrifice.
South Campasak: when you come down from the mountain you will arrive here, it is a large steppe where you can spend days without even seeing a tree, this is the main reason why most travelers do not even last a week in Campasak, as it is a flat steppe you have nowhere to hide, fortunately we have a list of rules so that you do not get destroyed by some creature in a couple of hours:
Rule 1: This should be obvious but bring plenty of water and food, you will go days without even seeing a stream let alone some berries
Rule 2: this is related to rule one but do not bring anything to eat that contains or is derived from meat or you will attract the kogen, they have an incredibly developed sense of smell, believe me you do not want them to notice you
Rule 3: wear perfume, most creatures in South Campasak are guided by smell, the smell of sweat or blood is very attractive to them, so wear some perfume that camouflages you with the environment so that they do not know your position
Rule 4: bring some jewelry, yes, I am clear that the situation in the mountains is not very good to get jewelry but if you want to have a chance to get out of here you must have some for 2 reasons
4a: the kazai, the kazai are blind moles about 5 meters high, they are the ONLY beings that do not want to eat you alive here, when you look for shelter you have to look for holes in the floor, those are their burrows, to stay and sleep there and be safe from other creatures, give them some jewelry, they love to feel the cold of metal and they will let you sleep in their burrow and offer you food (I don't recommend eating because their food is basically animal guts with clotted blood).
Rule 5: If you see a kind of campfire in the distance, run in the opposite direction, the mogler is hunting and there is no telling what the hell he will do to you if he catches you.
Rule 6: do not eat any berries or fruits that you find on the road, almost all the food here is poisonous and you will possibly die of dysentery
Rule 7: there is a slightly marked path in the steppe, do not follow it, it is a trap of the creatures here, instead follow the line of grass that is longer than the rest, you will know what it is like when you see it, you could complement it with a compass
Rule 8: If you hear a galloping sound mixed with the sound of boiling water, lie on your back on the long grass path and pray that thing doesn't see you.
Rule 9: DO NOT TRAVEL ALONE, this is one of the most important rules, a companion can get you out of many troubles, such as using them as a human shield against entities.
Rule 10: If on your journey you find a very large oak tree with sharp branches, you are in luck. It will protect you from some entities and can give you shelter in its trunk. You will see that even though you walk and walk, the tree seems to follow the same path at distance, he was once a human and therefore has the intelligence of one, he will protect you until you leave the steppe
Rule 11: if at any time you come across a forest and the grass path does not end RUN, run in the opposite direction to it, run until your legs can no longer move from exhaustion, until you faint, only when you wake up will you know if you escape was effective
11a: what is in the center of that forest transformed the tree of rule 10
Rule 12: If you blink and out of nowhere a terrifying amalgamation of what appear to be fused human faces appears, you have about 4 days to leave the steppe (if you are not that far from the next campasak area) or return to the mountain (if You are just beginning your journey), the steppe has marked you and wants you to leave, if after that time you are still in the steppe, what happens to you will not be pretty.
12a: We do not know for sure why the creature from rule 10 appears but there are certain factors such as destroying the nature of the steppe (including the creatures that inhabit it)
13: After about 3 weeks on average, following the long grass path walking towards the north you will find a large river with a forest on the other bank, this is the Qiza River and marks the border between Campasak South and Campasak Central-South, yes You have not deviated much from the grass path, you will see a small village of huts and there you must take a boat and cross the river, although your actions depend on whether it is day or night.
13a: it is daylight, there you should take the canoe quickly cross the river, upon entering the village it is true that it is full of half-eaten human remains, this should not matter to you, so cross the river
13b: it is night, in this scenario YOU SHOULD NOT GO TO THE VILLAGE FOR ANYTHING IN THE WORLD, during the day the things that live there are gathered, you do not want to join the human remains of that village, instead look for a Kazai burrow (there are many of them along the river bank) and spend the night there, it doesn't matter if you don't have jewelry, the Kazai will take pity on you and let you spend the night in their lair
13:c after following the scenario in 13b you should go as soon as the sun rises to the village and leave in the boat, it is almost certain that the inhabitants of the village will notice your presence and that is why they will return earlier than normal
Rule 14: FOR NOTHING IN THE WORLD YOU CROSS SWIMMING THE RIVER, you know, there are also aquatic entities and the only thing that prevents them from attacking you is that they do not detect you on top of the canoe
If you manage to overcome all this you will reach Campasak central-south and for that there are new rules

I recently discovered the Pelican V700 Vault Takedown Rifle and Shotgun Case, and it's truly a game changer for transportation of your beloved firearms. As an avid hunter, I appreciate that this case provides a high level of security, offering crushproof, dustproof, and weather resistant protection. The sturdy handles ensure your rifles or shotguns can withstand even the toughest conditions on your hunting trips.
One feature I particularly love is the presence of six push button latches that offer secure closure with easy-open access. This ensures your weapons are safe and secure while also making it convenient for you to access them when needed. The case also comes with specific foam designed to fit takedown firearms and related accessories, providing your gear with excellent protection during transportation.
However, like any product, there are some cons as well. The case is quite bulky and heavy, making it less ideal for those looking for a lightweight solution. Additionally, cutting and shaping the foam to fit your specific equipment can be time-consuming. Overall, despite its drawbacks, I would highly recommend this gun case to anyone in need of a reliable and resilient transportation solution for their takedown firearms.

🔗Evolution Outdoor Waxed Canvas Rifle Case for 1 Scoped Rifle with Zippered Pocket

https://preview.redd.it/9u134c8aib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a224fd4ba1667cfbf97b4de44e1e8f833e8a5f4d
I recently got an opportunity to use the Evolution Outdoor Rawhide Rifle Case for my shooting practice. I was really impressed with the choice of materials and craftsmanship involved in creating this piece. The waxed canvas outer shell is not just stylish but also robust enough to stand up to regular usage without showing signs of wear.
One feature that caught my eye was the interior flannel lining, which not only provides a classic touch to the overall design but also offers excellent protection for my firearm. The heavy gauge foam padding and 24 oz. cotton duck canvas provide an extra layer of security and handling ease.
Despite these high points, it did come with some minor drawbacks. The full-length, antique-brass zippers are reliable, but they may require some extra care during closing to prevent them from jamming. The front storage pocket could be slightly more spacious to accommodate more gear.
Overall, I find the Evolution Outdoor Rawhide Rifle Case to be an excellent choice. Its classic design appeals to the vintage lover in me, while its superior build quality ensures my rifle is safe and secure, ready for action at any time.

🔗Drake Waterfowl Side-Opening Gun Case

https://preview.redd.it/7qc6vqraib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5f017e58bfe2ec96fd189fd8789c9c2f197f619b
Experience the innovation of the Drake Waterfowl Side-Opening Gun Case! This ground-breaking design revolutionizes how we store and maintain our firearms. The patented side flap allows for seamless access to your gun, while its HD2 material and water-resistant nylon interior liner provide top-notch protection. The adjustable shoulder strap, outer pocket for choke tubes, and sturdy snap fastenings make it the perfect companion for keeping your firearms safe, dry, and ready for action.
I've been using this case for some time now and I can't sing its praises enough. The side-flap feature is a game-changer; it made it incredibly easy to clean and dry my shotgun after a hunting trip. The interior is made of synthetic materials that don't absorb water or dirt, which is a lifesaver when your gear gets splashed with mud and water.
A small drawback I've noticed is that the exterior pocket can be a bit challenging to close if you're storing choke tubes. However, I suppose this is a minor concern given the case's overall performance and quality. The durability has been impressive; I've taken this case out in all conditions and it's held up beautifully.
In summary, the Drake Waterfowl Side-Opening Gun Case is a brilliant and practical solution for storing and maintaining your firearms. Its innovative design, durable construction, and water resistance make it a must-have for hunters and shooting enthusiasts alike. Despite the minor issue with the exterior pocket, I wholeheartedly recommend this case for its performance and value.

🔗Avery Floating Gun Case for Waterfowl Hunting

https://preview.redd.it/8lw2grzaib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bbd30c93a769a22e1ea2e8f76f335f713afa1566
As an avid waterfowl hunter, I can safely say that the Avery Floating 2.0 Gun Case in Max5 camo has completely changed my game. I remember one chilly morning when my shotgun took an unexpected dip in the water. Thanks to the water-resistant DuraMax material of this case, I didn't have to worry about my trusty companion being ruined by the moisture.
What I especially love about this case is how it ensures protection in water with its floating design. It's like having a personal bodyguard for my precious shotgun! And let's not forget the adjustable shoulder strap which makes carrying this beast of a case incredibly comfortable.
However, there are two downsides to this otherwise fantastic gun case. Firstly, it tends to run on the smaller side, causing some issues when it comes to fitting in larger shotguns with extended chokes. Secondly, even though the material is strong and reliable, it does lack a little in terms of water resistance.
Overall, if you're looking for a solid and reliable gun case that will protect your shotgun from unexpected mishaps while you're out hunting, then the Avery Floating 2.0 Gun Case in Max5 camo is definitely worth considering. Just remember to check its compatibility with your specific shotgun first!

I recently took the Allen Ranch Canvas 52 Shotgun Case out on a hunting trip, and I must say, it surpassed my expectations. The exterior zippered pocket provides quick access to essentials like ammunition and other accessories, while the plush padded interior ensures my dear shotgun is safe from dings and scratches.
The weight of 363 grams felt comfortably light in my hands, thanks to its padded handles. Despite its compact size, there was ample storage space for both my shotgun and all its necessary gear. I particularly appreciated the attention to detail in the design - it's clear that this case was crafted with serious shooters in mind.
However, one minor inconvenience was that the case was a bit too tight for some of my larger hunting knives. Though this was not a deal-breaker by any means, it did require a little extra effort to fit everything in securely.
Overall, the Allen Ranch Canvas 52 Shotgun Case has proven to be an invaluable addition to my hunting gear. Its superior craftsmanship, plentiful storage, and comfortable handling make it worthy of the highest praise.

🔗Durable Cotton Duck Canvas Rifle Case with Abrasion Resistance

I've been using the Allen Ranch Canvas Rifle Case for a few months now and it's been an absolute game-changer. Not only does it securely hold my hunting rifle, but the plush quilted interior provides extra protection. The cotton duck exterior fabric with abrasion resistant synthetic base is a real bonus too, especially when I'm hunting in rough terrain. It's also got a big exterior zippered pocket where I stash extra ammo, hearing protection, or whatever else I need on my hunting trips. Plus, the lockable zippers and metal D-ring ensure that my rifle stays safe and secure when not in use. Another great feature is the padded carrying handles, which make it easy and comfortable to carry. The only downside? The exterior fabric might attract more dirt and dust than other materials. But that's a small price to pay for such an otherwise fantastic rifle case. "
In this review, I highlighted the safe and secure nature of the rifle case, the abundant storage, the plush quilted interior for added protection, and the convenient padded carrying handles. However, I also mentioned a minor downside to the cotton duck exterior fabric's tendency to attract more dirt and dust than other materials. Overall, I would recommend this rifle case to fellow hunters looking for a durable and protective option.

I've had the pleasure of using the Browning Waterfowl Floater 54-inch Shotgun Case Major Brown 1419509852 over the past year and it's been a game-changer. The heavy-duty design gives me peace of mind knowing my shotgun is well protected. As someone who often finds themselves on a boat hunting for ducks, the ability to trust this case to keep my gun safe from water damage is truly comforting.
One of the features that really stands out to me is the high-density closed cell foam padding. It ensures that my shotgun stays dry even if it does happen to fall into the water. The other day I accidentally dropped my case from my boat, and while my heart dropped along with it, I was relieved to see my beloved shotgun bobbing on the surface safely.
Another detail I appreciate about this case is the excellent quality of workmanship. The fabric is rugged and durable, able to withstand years of use without showing signs of wear. The web handles and hanging loop make it easy to carry and store when not in use.
However, there are some minor drawbacks. The detachable shoulder strap could use improvement; it tends to loosen over time and doesn't stay put as securely as I would like. Additionally, while the Browning Vintage Tan camo pattern is attractive, it might not be to everyone's taste.
In conclusion, I highly recommend the Browning Waterfowl Floater 54-inch Shotgun Case Major Brown 1419509852. Its exceptional protection against water damage, high-quality construction, and stylish appearance make it an excellent choice for any serious waterfowl hunter. Despite its minor cons, this case has become an indispensable part of my hunting gear!

🔗Premium Shotgun Case for Ultimate Protection and Convenience

https://preview.redd.it/4ai1513dib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3caf9ec45e3a27c07a7941285ed553bd7b744ede

As a gun enthusiast who constantly needs to transport my treasured shotgun, Uncle Mike's Padded Long Gun Case has been a reliable companion. The Forest Green color lends an understated elegance to its sturdy exterior. I've found that the balanced, wraparound nylon handles add a measure of comfort while carrying the case.
However, it was the model's thickness that was the real standout feature. With thick padding and resilient construction, this case ensures my firearm remains secure during transportation. This superior protection is worth the small weight increase. The full-length zippers do a fantastic job of allowing the cases to open flat, making it easier to access the shotgun inside.
Nevertheless, the model does have a couple of minor drawbacks. It's not the most spacious case available, leading to some snug fits for larger firearms. And despite its snag-resistant lining, the case can sometimes catch on door frames or hooks in storage, which could be a concern for those not willing to be extra cautious.
Overall, Uncle Mike's Padded Long Gun Case is a product that caters to the specific needs of a gun enthusiast, striking a balance between style and practicality. It has become an essential element in my firearm arsenal, providing a level of security and protection that I can trust.

🔗Durable Floating Gun Carry Bag with Adjustable Shoulder Strap

I had the pleasure of trying out the Rig 'Em Right Sure Shot Floating Gun Case, and I must say, it's a game-changer. The dense floatation feature was fantastic; it helped keep my gun safe and dry, even in the roughest waters. The full-length zipper was incredibly convenient, allowing me to easily access my gun when needed. The oversized zipper pulls were a nice touch as well, making it easy to open and close the case with one hand.
The soft lining within the case was a nice surprise, providing extra protection for my firearm. The adjustable shoulder strap made it comfortable to carry, and the double-reinforced tip was a reliable addition that helped ensure the case would last for years.
One downside I found was the storage pocket wasn't as large as I had hoped, but it still held some essentials nicely. Another minor inconvenience was that the case wasn't quite as camouflaged as I had hoped, so it might not be ideal for stealthy hunts. However, overall, I was impressed with the Rig 'Em Right Sure Shot Floating Gun Case and would highly recommend it to any gun enthusiast.

🔗Ultra-Dense Shotgun Case for Ultimate Protection

The 52-inch size caters to almost all types of shotguns, and the ultra-dense, dual foam padding system makes it almost impossible to damage the precious shotgun.
The Endura fabric covering is a real game-changer. It not only looks good but its easy-to-clean feature is a lifesaver. Another plus point is the lockable zippers. They offer a sense of security that is hard to ignore. The reinforced webbed carrying handles make carrying the case a breeze.
However, there is one con that stood out to me quite prominently - the size is quite bulky. It can be a hassle to carry around in crowded places. Nevertheless, considering the amount of protection it provides and the convenience it offers, it's certainly worth a try.

The first thing I noticed was how the case has separate compartments for the stock and receiver. It's perfect for protecting your shotgun, whether you're carrying an oveunder or a side-by-side. And, it's quite the sight! The padded interior with velvet lining is like a gentle cradle for your precious gun. The padding, a crucial feature for any case, is thick and robust in this product. This provides robust protection for your gun by keeping it snug and secure. If there was one minor downside, it could be the size of the case that might not be compact enough for certain situations.
Overall, the Allen 52 Heritage Lakewood Shotgun Case is a reliable and stylish shotgun case that offers excellent protection to your firearm. However, one drawback I faced was its narrow width and depth, making it challenging to fit in one of my ten different shotguns. Despite this hiccup, I was impressed by the case's protective features and its reasonable price. Overall, it proved to be a useful accessory in my outdoor arsenal.

Buyer's Guide

Canvas shotgun cases have become the go-to choice for gun enthusiasts and sportspersons due to their durability, versatility, and stylish appearance. These cases come in various sizes, designs, and features to accommodate different shotgun types, providing ample protection for your precious firearms. In this section, we will discuss the essential factors to consider when purchasing a canvas shotgun case, as well as some general advice to help you make the best choice.

Size and Shape

https://preview.redd.it/0ok5kpqfib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=228dd0c3aff0591c87def7325ee047be57a2ed44
The first factor to consider is the size and shape of your shotgun. Most canvas cases are designed to fit different types, sizes, and barrel lengths, but it's always a good idea to compare the interior dimensions of the case with your firearm's dimensions. This will ensure a comfortable and secure fit.

Construction and Material

High-quality canvas cases are constructed with heavy-duty materials, such as 18-ounce cotton canvas, and reinforced stitching for enhanced durability. Additionally, look for cases with a PVC coating to provide extra water resistance and UV protection, ensuring the case remains in good condition even when exposed to the elements.

Locking System

A reliable locking mechanism is crucial for keeping your shotgun safe from theft or accidental discharge. Look for cases with sturdy locks, latches, or combination locks, preferably one that can be easily secured when you're not using the case. Some high-end options may also have a built-in combination lock, ensuring your firearm stays secure during transportation.

https://preview.redd.it/3qlll15gib1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cb7bd2b312403557d560450b2336e07437b970b

Design and Aesthetics

Canvas shotgun cases come in various design options, from classic brown to stylish camouflage patterns. Consider your personal preferences and how the case will be used when choosing the design. A well-designed case not only adds a touch of style but also helps you easily identify your firearm in a crowd or storage area.

Maintenance and Care

Canvas shotgun cases require minimal maintenance, but it's essential to clean and maintain them properly to ensure their longevity. Always check for wear and tear, especially in high-stress areas like zippers and seams. If needed, repair or replace these components before they compromise the overall durability of the case. Additionally, store your case in a cool, dry place when not in use to prevent mold and mildew growth.

Pricing and Value

Canvas shotgun cases come in a range of price points, from budget-friendly options to high-end, premium cases. While Canvas Shotgun Cases are designed to protect your firearm during transportation, they should not be used for long-term storage. The gun should be cleaned and stored in a dry environment, preferably in a gun safe or a secure locker.

Can I customize my Canvas Shotgun Case?

Some Canvas Shotgun Case manufacturers offer customization options, such as embroidery or color choices. Be sure to check with your preferred manufacturer for availability.

dealing with a problematic member of a board games group

I wanted to write and say thank you.
I am part of a local board games group, and started to run the group a while ago. It’s a great group of people who all enjoy coming together to play board games and have fun, and it was one of the key factors in making my husband and I feel at home in the city where we live. We have both made friends with people in the group, and it’s now a firm part of our life here. In addition, a regular member who left recently said that the group was the highlight of his week, which was lovely to hear. I love running the group!
However, there is a member of the group, Quinn, who has been in the group since it started (seven years or more) and has been displaying problematic behavior since he joined (rude comments, refusing to play anyone else’s games, losing his temper at times, leaving games in a huff when he’s losing, and generally making the atmosphere unpleasant for others). When we joined, we were told that Quinn bothered everyone but was just something that was being in the group, so we went along with that. At the time, the group was very serious and inclined towards more serious board games, and only three people ever brought games. There has been a real change of culture since then, with a range of games being played (light games, traditional games, and heavy games) and everyone brings games now. The atmosphere is a lot lighter, with more emphasis on having fun and being social, and this is something that Quinn does not enjoy and has not adjusted well to.
When I started to run the group, I noticed Quinn’s behavior was having a terrible effect on the group (people not coming back because of him or doing anything to avoid playing with him, and his preference for playing games in reverential silence making sessions less fun for everyone). I also realized that some people were at breaking point with this and it might contribute to them leaving.
The deputy (Kelly) and I wanted to ensure that we did it fairly and using the right procedure. We gathered feedback on the group, (which was useful in itself!), which confirmed that Quinn’s behavior was an issue, and I spoke to him, named what we were seeing with clear examples, and explained what we needed to see change. Quinn said he would take it on board. Your scripts and language were very helpful, as Quinn takes things very literally and factually.
Quinn’s behavior improved for four weeks, which was great. Some people have put up with it for so long that no amount of change will make them want to play games with Quinn, but some people were willing to give Quinn a chance. Unfortunately, Quinn’s behavior started to slip after four weeks, culminating in a session where they almost put a new member off coming back by lecturing them about group etiquette and insulting their game shelves with what was meant to be a joke, but did not land.
I spoke to Quinn again and explained that since the behavior we discussed had returned, if this did not improve, we would have to ask Quinn to leave as the group is for everyone and I need to do what’s right for the group as a whole.
Quinn took the points on board and was visibly upset at the thought of being asked to leave the group. Since we spoke to them, they haven’t attended of the two sessions since then, but they are still chatting on our Discord channel and seem to be trying to make amends by promoting the group to a students’ group in the city we live in.
We don’t know what will happen, but Kelly and I have agreed what behaviors will mean Quinn will be asked to leave, and your scripts and posts were invaluable in thinking about how to tackle this, and what language to use. Your posts have helped me realize that being the group leader means that the buck stops with me. For example, my husband and I disagreed on how to handle the situation (he was in favor of asking Quinn to leave immediately) but I had the confidence to think it through, follow the process through fairly, and know that if it didn’t work, that responsibility would rest with me.
This isn’t related to work per se, but I wanted to say thank you very much for the invaluable and free advice which has really helped me in navigating this situation!
Update Apr 11, 2024
I am the letter writer who runs a board games group and used Alison’s excellent advice about communication to deal with a problematic member of the games group and the issues their behavior was causing.
We had a twist in the tale recently when Quinn, the member who was asked to leave the group because their behavior was negatively impacting others, asked if they could come back.
For four weeks every year, we use a different venue as another group needs our normal venue. One one of the four weeks, I went for a walk before the session and noticed what looked like Quinn in the park. When the session started, Quinn appeared, just “passing by,” and we had a quick chat about this and that before they asked if they could come back to the group, saying they were in a better place now. They then left without ordering anything, which makes me think they dropped in just to see us.
I said I would send a message, and gave it due consideration. I also asked a friend who knows Quinn and used to be in the group, but has now moved, for their more objective input.
The decision was no: the group is working well as it is, with high numbers and between 11 and 20 people per session, and Quinn coming back would lead to awkwardness and possible animosity from a few people, some of whom would speak their mind. We would also lose a lot of members, and the group would slowly decline. For what it’s worth, one person who had some very negative interactions with Quinn, when they heard why Quinn was there ( they were round the corner), exclaimed “No!” to Quinn coming back, and this person is one of the nicest people you’ll meet. Similar reactions were given from others.
I sent Quinn a message explaining the decision, and I was as fair and kind as possible given the circumstances. Quinn has found another games group, albeit one that only plays light games, (not heavy games, Quinn’s preference), and I mentioned that and said it sounds like a nice group (which it does).
Quinn was perfectly pleasant when we chatted, but that was for about eight minutes, and they knew what was coming. They also said that they weren’t often doing the things I’d mentioned anymore (moving other people’s pieces, and a couple of other examples I gave), and that although their new group likes light games, they are helping some people progress up to heavier games. It wasn’t clear if the people wanted to progress (one of the issues we had was Quinn assuming that everyone wanted to progress).
The games group continues to do well, with enough surplus each year to give everyone free sessions every January, and we receive frequent feedback that the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and that people feel at home and confident to bring and teach their games there. Our annual Christmas potluck dinner and session with a Secret Santa also continues. We also have a Google sheet with people’s games collections, if they want to add them, thanks to one of our members who likes spreadsheets.
For myself, Ask a Manager continues to help me out at work! I recently applied for a job which would be a step up income wise and I used Alison’s tips, and I use the communication tips in daily life as well as at work. I was actually used as a bargaining chip in recent negotiations at work over a type of meeting that needs minuting (for my minuting skills), so I will take that as a compliment!

2024.05.19 04:30 Popculturebuff2002 Brand New Television show idea

Hello Everyone,
I would like to share with you an idea me and a friend of mine had. We are working on a pilot for this. But we are wanting to do a show that is inspired by the movie Free Guy. It is called The Personality Factory. We have a lot of the details ready and everything.
Characters (FaithArt, Werehog, Wally art, and Error FaithArt belong to https://www.instagram.com/thefandomhunter?igsh=MXNlaGdhajB5dHFsNw==):
Ryl33 - Ryl33 is an A.I. girl who was once a CPU until she was mysteriously given her dreamy and kind personality. She is shown to be caring and a big hearted dreamer which is something her brother Brayd3n used to be. During the PIlot she works on trying to get her older brother Brayd3non board with helping her achieve free will for all of PIXELMANIA and show everyone can be more than their program
Brayd3n - Brayd3n is an A.I. boy who has an entertaining personality and was given it 5 years prior to the events of the pilot. He is dramatic, big hearted like his sister Rylee with a dash of comedy thrown into the mix, theatrical, and sometimes awkward. He enjoys entertaining others with his shows and performances yet he has a bit of guilt and trauma. He will continuously decline Rylee’s offer to help with the factory. He resides in Astral Glow
FaithArt - FaithArt another being from another world that came to this world to come help with the adventures of the factory gang, but she has programming that prevents her from inferring too much or telling the future but does her best to help out.
Werehog - one of FaithArts best friends since his world was created they’re really close and would do anything for eachother, colossal Werehog is a very sweet gentle giant that has a temper here and there and a mysterious past but is willing to help anyone with their emotional needs and is a huge hugger
WallyArt - he was found in his dying universe by FaithArt and was givin a new job to help FaithArt and Werehog any Chance he gets, he's a very sweet and gentle person that is very soft spoken and loves to paint as much as Faith. And is a medical professional both mentally and physically.
L!am - L!am is a CPU and a thief of PIXELMANIA and leader of the Rogers for…reasons. In the pilot he torments others in the many locations Rylee and Charlie go to and unknowingly distracts everyone from Rylee’s big idea. He was an orphan at a young age and refused to go to the orphanage. He can be immature yet caring and a real potty mouth.
Charl1e - Charl1e is a CPU assistant programmed to help Rylee as she is her boss. Charlie is organized and keeps to a schedule. Going against her program could cause catastrophic disasters
Error Faith - is a very vengeful version of FaithArt who's world was destroyed in a glitchy mess and she hates Faith for not saving her world from everything so she wants to destroy every single world/ universe that exists and rule both PIXELMANIA and inkblot.
Bright_Man - Bright_Man is a councilor CPU and the former leader of the PIXELMANIA council as he was demoted for an undisclosed reason. He is like a school bully and, like L!am, he is a potty mouth. Bright_Man has a huge hatred against Brayden and whenever he gets the chance he tries to boo Brayden off the stage and, secretly, try to kill him.
World Building: In the alternate video game like world of PIXELMANIA there are 4 sections consisting of Astral Glow, Hollows Village, Expo Canyon, and Speedway City. All four are connected by a special place called Console Centre
Astral Glow is a gorgeous world full of magic and wonder. CPUs learn all kinds of magic to become wizards, witches, warlocks, and fantasy styled warriors. CPU Faries also reside in this part of the world. Their houses are made of pure magic and can be in the air and the trees. They can even live in castles. There are many different magical locations here
Hollows Village is a land with a horrifying landscape, dark skies, and terrible monsters such as Werewolves, Zombies, Mummies, etc. Their houses are either cabins or mansions, or they can just sleep out in the dark forests of Talbot. Not many other locations other than the cemetery
Expo Canyon is a land full of perilous locations such as Volcanoes and dangerous seas. Their houses are hanging off of cliffs, on the water, in the trees and in other dangerous parts of the world
Speedway City is like a huge racetrack with no sidewalks at all. The only walking there is inside the houses which are racing garages or motorhomes for race cars. Speedway City is a fun place where you can race your heart out of the city in a fun way. But you can also race on the literal raceway and win big prizes
Console Centre is the center of all PIXELMANIA and the main land to all CPUs. This is where many CPUs can chill, meet new people (since CPUs are allowed to have friends as they are not soulless), and shop for themselves…Think of Free Guy almost
The Personality Factory is where all CPUs are made in the first place. All of the coded blood is stored in a special vault and placed into the CPU before color and customization begins. They are given their program through a Personality Randomizer which randomly gives the CPU their personality and how they act all day long. It is located on a small platform connected to the Console Centre.
Age Rating: TV-MA
Reasoning for the age rating: Lots of swearing (especially by Brayden and Liam), stylized yet bloody violence, and mature content
Premise: In an alternate video game-like world, Rylee, an A.I., goes out to pursue her dream of giving everyone the same free will that she has by giving them all the unique personality they choose to have. She creates a personality selector not knowing there is a history behind it. She seeks the help of her A.I. older brother Brayden with her assistant Charlie and some unexpected allies by her side.
Let me know what you all think

2024.05.19 04:10 Lullaby001 Is the area south of Ridgemoor country club prone to flooding?

Looking at a property in that area and I remember seeing water very high on forest preserve west of Wright College. Its been a long time so my memories could’ve been wrong.
Edit: zillow’s flood factor ranks the area 6/10

2024.05.19 03:18 xI3loodEaglex Criminally underrated

As the title suggests this feels criminal how many people are playing Abiotic Factor. It's all but on par with something like Marauders as far as player base to how imaginative and innovative the game is for the formula and genre of game.
I mean just look at the number of people on the sub I need everyone to know about this game and to play it lol. My friends and I are just mind boggled as to why there aren't 5-10 times more people practicing science out there in the cascade facility. I truly love this game the last game that held me like this in the "God I wish I was playing x game" was Valheim and it got its roses.
TLDR; more people need to know how good this game is... And I need more of it ASAP 😂
