I’m a software engineer 39M and I don’t think I’ll be able to work into my 50s as planned. I’m already seeing team mates being replaced by AI (under the excuse of economic conditions but the company already sees how they can get more work done with less developers). Thank you in advance for any advice. We are from the US, and my family planned a 3-week visit to a country that requires passports to be valid for at least 6 months. Unfortunately, I overlooked this requirement and didn't check the immigration rules before our trip.
The first leg of our flight was with JetBlue, which allowed us to fly to Boston without any issues and printed boarding passes for our entire journey. The next two legs were with Qatar Airways. When it was time to board, they announced our name and informed us that one of our children couldn't board because his passport expires within 6 months. Even though we were only staying for 3 weeks, we were denied boarding.
I understand that I should have checked the passport's validity beforehand and take responsibility for that oversight. However, because JetBlue let us fly to Boston, we incurred expenses for a rental car and hotel. Additionally, to get some of our money back, we have to pay a cancellation fee of $600 per ticket, which we could have avoided if JetBlue had informed us about the passport issue before the first flight. Instead, we would have only needed to pay a $200 flight change fee.
Is there any legal basis to avoid paying the cancellation fee in this situation?

I am traveling with my family to England and we are all meeting up at Heahtrow to pick up a rental car at the "airport car park" (according to the rental company. Are there more of these car parks or only one?).
None of us have been to Heahtrow before and we need to come up with a plan how and where we can meet up:

• Group 1 has a flight arriving at 12.30 to T4
• Group 2 has a flight arriving at 14.20 to T2

My guess would be for G1 to somehow get to T2 arrivals, and we together make our way to the car park.
OR should both groups head to the car park?

The only place with availability for me to dash is some place called Exton in Pennsylvania. It's got a population under 7,000. Im using a rental car. I'm afraid I'll go out there and make 35 dollars the entire day and profit next nothing. What's the likelihood of this happening? I play heaps more than that but I can't think of them off the top of my head lol. To try and list some id say project zomboid is one I'm very into as of right now, that and hell divers 2. I really enjoyed elden ring so I want to try more souls like games. Red dead redemption 2 is amazing and my favourite game of all time is probably watch dogs 2.
I love JDM cars and unfortunately haven't been to a car meet in over a year now. My introduction to photography was through cars so if you'd like to see some of my photos do let me know! Most of my part time work went towards getting my dream car so I definitely plan on going to more meets!
As for what I look like I'm 5"11' brown hair that touches my shoulders and never acts normally. I am 75 ish kg and I have brown eyes. That's a basic description of me but if you want a picture that's not an issue.

Hello Reddit World, thanks everyone in advance for your help.
Yesterday my parked car (Nissan Rogue) was hit on a NYC street by a driver in a black Jeep SUV. The driver did not flee the scene, waited for me, and I now have their contact info, driver's license and insurance. I did not get the vehicle's registration (a rental). When my car was hit, it also hit a large planter from a building (doesn't seem like there's any damage besides it being moved) and my car slightly hit the vehicle in the front. It doesn't seem like much, but I saw a small dent. I left my information to the vehicle in front and he has contacted me.
They called the police when it happened, but after quite a while of waiting I called myself. With no injuries they recommended that we could just file the report online.
I have a few questions now if anyone can help:

1. I also called my insurance (Travelers - NJ policy) to report this, and they basically told me that if I filed a claim it might be held against how much I pay, so I put it on pause. Is this a bad move? Should I file with my insurance even if the at fault driver is accepting fault right now?
   
2. The driver called their insurance and filed a claim (or at least that's what I overheard and what they mentioned). Should I call their insurance and file a claim?
   
3. How does the third car (or the planter) play a role here? Since it was my car that hit them, could I be liable in any way? or do they have to go after the driver if they want anything in damages?
   
4. I haven't filed the police report yet, but it seems like you have to file it if you are the driver. Should I file it even if I wasn't driving the vehicle at that time? Should I get the other driver to file it? or both, just in case?

A PREFACE: This is an essay written by former commissioner of Major League Baseball, A. Bartlett Giamatti, and it is something I always read following the conclusion of one of my team’s (across various sports) seasons, and I’d like to introduce it to all of you, in hopes that some of you may pick up this tradition for yourselves.
I find it’s a good way for me to appreciate and reflect on the experience of following a team over an entire season and beyond, and more broadly to examine why, despite the inherent futility in wrapping up so much of our emotional well-being in something we ultimately can’t control, we do precisely that anyway.
I will post the essay in its entirety here. Even though it was originally written about baseball, I believe the underlying themes can apply to any sport. Since it is a bit lengthy, I’ve highlighted the three most important and universally-applicable paragraphs. Despite this, I encourage you all to read the whole thing. Even if not for its own sake, at least do it in order to properly give those three paragraphs their intended rhetorical and emotional weight.

"The Green Fields of the Mind”
”It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.
“Somehow, the summer seemed to slip by faster this time. Maybe it wasn't this summer, but all the summers that, in this my fortieth summer, slipped by so fast. There comes a time when every summer will have something of autumn about it. Whatever the reason, it seemed to me that I was investing more and more in baseball, making the game do more of the work that keeps time fat and slow and lazy. I was counting on the game's deep patterns, three strikes, three outs, three times three innings, and its deepest impulse, to go out and back, to leave and to return home, to set the order of the day and to organize the daylight. I wrote a few things this last summer, this summer that did not last, nothing grand but some things, and yet that work was just camouflage. The real activity was done with the radio--not the all-seeing, all-falsifying television--and was the playing of the game in the only place it will last, the enclosed green field of the mind. There, in that warm, bright place, what the old poet called Mutability does not so quickly come.”
“But out here, on Sunday, October 2, where it rains all day, Dame Mutability never loses. “The aisles are jammed, the place is on its feet, the wrappers, the programs, the Coke cups and peanut shells, the doctrines of an afternoon; the anxieties, the things that have to be done tomorrow, the regrets about yesterday, the accumulation of a summer: all forgotten, while hope, the anchor, bites and takes hold where a moment before it seemed we would be swept out with the tide. One-by-one, the triumphant City squad are introduced to the crowd as they receive their winners' medals and prepare for THE moment.
Eventually it arrives with the appearance of Kyle Walker. The captain receives the trophy, joins his teammates, and thrusts their prize towards the sky and blue moon...

Context: My parents are divorced (approx 5 years ago) my mum is supportive, whilst my dad is the narcissist.
I currently live away from home for university, but go back on breaks to visit. My dad before the divorce was fine for the most part, but after the divorce he begun to show some really awful behaviours, which lead to me developing anxiety. For example, telling me he doesn’t love me, telling me that he doesn’t want me to be a part of his life anymore (because I was quieter one time I visited my hometown).
He’s also done things such as blaming me and verbally abusing me when someone hit my parked car (it was parked correctly, the other person was at fault), and other things such as taking my favourite instrument away that we used to rent for years and returning it to the store for no apparent reason in the middle of my final year high school exams. One of his friends also used to message me inappropriately when I was a minor, and whilst I told my ndad this years ago he wrote it off as ‘oh x person is just like that’.
He has also spoken to my partner whilst I was not there about a married woman my dad was interested in and shown them photos, which I find wildly inappropriate. He’s also asked my partner if I had ever given them the silent treatment (I have not) and ranted to my partner about how my mother used to do this all the time to him (she did not, he has a very warped perception of my mother and likes to demonise my mother to anyone that will listen). I am super worried about the toll this takes on my partner and frequently worry about the impact this has on them.
He also doesn’t respect my boundaries, particularly when I’m with my partner. He used to just walk straight into my room and not knock, but I brought it up with him once and he got mad at me for it, and now he knocks but walks straight in, which defeats the purpose of knocking.
Ndad frequently compares me to my mother as an insult. As a result of these behaviours and other things, I feel he is becoming increasingly more mentally unstable. He is overtly racist and quite sexist, using slurs which make me deeply uncomfortable. He frequently puts money in to poor investments to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars, frequently pays women for prostitution services (he tries to hide this from me, but I am observant) and frequently falls victim to scams where women ask him for money repeatedly and he gives it away, only for them to block him and not contact him. This behaviour has been happening since as long as I can remember - the first time I saw it I was 9-10 and walked in to him on his laptop on a cheating website.
One of the more sinister things he does is take photos of me without my consent, napping on the couch for example, or just without me knowing and he sends it to these women overseas, I’m not quite sure what for.
Today there was one thing he did that I thought was pretty reflective of ndad behaviour. He made a joke in the morning which was pretty disgusting, which I responded by saying ‘that’s not funny’ and he began calling me too sensitive and telling me he can’t make jokes around me anymore.
In terms of his poor decision-making, he frequently loans people sums (we’re talking like hundreds of thousands into millions of dollars) without any sort of contract or regulation for these people to pay him back (they never do). The most upsetting bit for me across the last few years is that he previously owned several expensive houses and has sold all of them, which were well over the value of the current house we live in, at least 4x as much, yet we still have a mortgage on this place.
He has now told me he is considering renting out our current house (which, would make no sense if he was a logical person - we now only own one house and he should in theory have around at the absolute minimum 4 times its value in liquid assets, so we don’t need rental income to assist us). He is also very controlling, asking where I am constantly and gets upset if I spend significant time away from the house or at my mother’s place.
The problem I’m getting to here is because I am semi-financially reliant on him, particularly for my costs for living away from home, I’m worried he’s going to continuously keep making riskier and riskier decisions till he eventually looses this house too through spending his money on prostitution and just paying for random women’s endeavours who ask him, including university fees, travel endeavours etc - when frequently he refuses to pay for mine. I am super grateful for the opportunity that I have been given to study away, but my dad's willingness to spend money on anything and everything these strangers want over my needs and the existing mortgage, which seems to make no sense as to why we have one, makes me extremely concerned for our financial stability.
My plan for the future is to become more financially independent, but at the moment this is difficult as I live away from home. My life in my hometown with him was a major factor in me choosing to go to university elsewhere. I just don’t know what to do anymore. Every time I return home, I’m reminded why I left.
