Haven, Redacted, Reclaimed, Flashpoint, Spearhead, Stranded, Exposure, Hourglass, Discarded, Manifest, Kaleidoscope, Orbital, Breakaway, Renewal. These are all one word names, I also had to look them up. There is no soul or meaning to these names.

Haven	WTF does that have to do with Chile?
Reclaimed	I guess you could say the facility is being reclaimed by nature, but you could apply that to any facility that is abandoned. In fact many of the maps in this could have the name reclaimed.
Redacted	WTF does that have to do with Scotland?
Flashpoint	WTF does that have to do with anything, its so generic. Also its in South Africa.
Spearhead	I guess its some hightech factory at the "spearhead" of technology? Its in Sweden, the name again means nothing.
Stranded	well I guess the ship is stranded so that works. Its Panama, why not just feature the Panama canal, and name it after that? Exposure, WTF does that have to do with the map?
Hourglass	WTF does that have to do with anything? I guess an hourglass has sand, cool, I guess any desert could be called Hourglass. You could also call this reclaimed as the city is being reclaimed by the desert.
Discarded	WTF does this have to do with the map? The ship as been discarded? Well so had the facilities, no workers were in them so why arent they called discarded?
Manifest	This is meant to be a play on a manifest document, its shit.
Kaleidoscope	I genuinely have no idea what that word as to do with the map. Its a datacentre, calling it Cloud would have made more sense
Orbital	I guess this works with the space rockets. But why not just find a real space centre and model and name it after that.
Breakaway	I guess ice can break away? Again shit name.
Renewal	WTF are we renewing? How does that have anything to do with the map.

Lets think of BF3, ill admit I didnt play any BF before BF3 so ill start at one I remember off the top of my head. Caspian Border, Operation Metro, Operation Firestorm, Noshahr Canals, Bandar Desert, Damavand peak, Sharqi Peninsula, Seine Crossing. These names make me think of something, The describe a place, an action, a setting.
BF4 This game had loads of maps so Ill just state a few, Dragon Pass, Operation Mortar, Operation locker, Golmud Railway, Rogue Transmission, Siege of Shanghai, Hainan Resort, Zavod 311. Only 2 maps in the game had a one word name, Dawnbreaker and Porpaganda.
BF1 Sinai Desert, Monte Grappa, Empires Edge, Ballroom Blitz, Argonne Forest. Only Amien, Suez and Rupture have a one word name, Amien is a place and so is Suez. it puts you in mind of something. The name reminds you of the place and setting.
I wont do what I did above as this is already long, but ill take a few.

Caspian Border	This map is at a border, I dont remember the location but its clearly near the Caspian sea, that gives you an idea where you are.
Operation Metro	Well, what are we in? A metro system, also metro is French and the map is based in France, same as Seine Crossing.
Sharqi Peninsula	It describes part of the map as it is a peninsula, also sharqi is a middle eastern word for a certain wind, it's also seasonal from the south and south east. The name even tells us the season the map is in. We know its a peninsula, in the middle east, in spring.
Dragon Pass	The dragon is a associated with China and a pass is a break in mountainous terrain.
Golmud Railway	Obviously is a railway in a place called Golmud which is in China.
Sinai Desert	This is obvious.
Amien and Suez	These are obvious.
Ballroom Blitz	Puts you in mind of a fast paced fight in a fancy location, probably a ballroom.

THE MOVIES

My Indy movies preferences

Temple of Doom
This is indeed my least favorite movie. I'm having a hard time with traditional Asian / Indian culture in general because I do not understand it and never studied it. That opening dancing scene with that dragon decoration really puts me off. Indy rather appears as a James Bond-like character than as a teacher. It just seems out of place. Also, in French, Harrisson Ford has a weird voice.
Raiders & Last Crusade
Between the two, it's really a tight. Raiders has to be put in the first position for it's the first one of its kind but I have to say there numerous very smart, funny scenes in Last Crusade
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
It received quite a bad press coverage. And coming after last Crusade, that no surprised. But it probably has the best entry scene of all. That Elvis music playing with those kids driving in the Desert... Very awesome
Dial of Destiny
Well, I would say it did follow the guidelines of an Indiana Jones movie but I could not feel that extra feeling. Except at the end when Marion comes back.

YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES

I downloaded and watched the TV show about 10 years ago, along with the last episode in the cabin with Harrisson Ford. I probably saw it in the default order as it was screened on TV though. I remember I like it. I saw that YouTube channel with supposedly 2K upscaled episodes but I must be missing something, when trying to download those videos, I was only offered a 360p version... Too bad, I'd love to show it to my daughter. Any advice ?

THE HAT

Indiana Jones had me buy more that 10 hats, included rabbit fur felt ones (beaver is expensive !). In the end, after wearing a hat for 5 years, in 2024 it's getting harder and harder for me with my dress style. It's also not natural for anyone to wear a hat in a big French city (not talking about those trilby, but full width hats) My thinking is that you can have a touch of Indy and a touch of roughness as long as you follow the etiquette : live with your time and don't appear out of place in the way you dress. So, I decided to simply wear a well distressed genuine Panama Hat in summer time which looks like this (yes, I put it in the oven and applied some paint 🙄). I also wear a distressed brown leather cap when it rains

THE CLOTHING

Taking about clothes and time, I'm not a fan of those Alden 405 shoes. It seems to me they did not age very well in terms of design. And I like timeless design. Red Wing Moc Toe shoes are kind of chunky in my opinion, and clearly not very versatile. I can't imagine being "dressed up" a bit with those. For a long time I wore several Clack Desert boots but when i got a bit of money I settled on a pair of Red Wing Blacksmith 3545 as I still have in mind simplicity, versatility and quality and a pair that would last 1 or 2 decades after resoles.
As for the leather jacket, I realized this week that hardly any people wear them anymore. I style wear mine but when choosing it a few years ago I went for a slightly more modern approach with a sober style.
I also got a second hand light blue denim Levi's jacket
If you are a smoker, or not, I personally don't like Indy's lucky charme zippo lighter. I went with this one

HOME DECORATION

Indiana Jones had me love home styles with more characters and I have to say I hate Ikea stuff despite its affordable price. And of course my apartment is full of Ikea furniture. But I'm trying to find a style that gives that retro exotic feeling. At first I thought this was called something like neo colonical home decoration but I find some cool stuff made of plain wood when searching for Safari home decor. Picture a somewhat rugged hard wood coffee table, an old world map next to a Panama hat hanging on the wall or trunk make of wood or leather or cords... This perfectly fits into Indiana Jones era.

It didn’t help that when I started my sojourn I were a’holdin my old compass upside down. I didn’t even realize it until I seen a sign saying “Welcome to Ohio” a week later.
But eventually I dun did arrive in the sunshine state. My first thought was “whar’s the fucking beach?!?” There weren’t no goddamn water anywhere except fer sum skanky looking swamps. I thought this may be a good place to go after that thar Skunk Ape. That’s what they call them Sasquatch down here in these parts. But it tweren’t no Sasquatch I were after right now. I were after sum “Ass-Crotch”.
Well sir, I sat thar fer a moment, pulled over on the side of I-95. I cyphered on my situation fer a spell. Then I remembered seeing a picture of the geographical layout of Florida. I seen it that time I stole cable TV from a local hotel back home called the “Bigfoot Inn”. It wuz time fer the Georgia-Florida game and I did not feel like driving down into town and watching it at sum dive bar with all them assholes. See, I tapped into the coax cable then run me a line bout 37 miles up and down the mountains until I got it to my cabin in Sasquatch Hollow. As it turned out, I was 11 feet short! I had to set up my old picture tube in my front yard.
So during the game I seen a picture of the state. I thunk to myself that it looked like a big, thick flaccid dong. “SHIT FIRE!”, I thought to myself. Florida must be full of black dudes cuz this here is the big dick state! I figured that I would fit in fine down there.
Then I had me one of them thar epiphanies. The revelation hit he so hard it damn near knocked me over. Well sir, I wuz tickled pink cuz I had worked up a powerful hunger and I ran out of the vittles I packed. I also weren’t looking forward to cooking up Hillary cuz ya’ll gotta slow roast a mule to make it edible, and I ain’t got time fer that shit. I wanted to git my fuck on.
I got ahold of one of them thar giant lizards by the tail. I pulled that sumbitch away from the carnage of Hillary’s corpse, then jumped on top of it. It thrashed and rolled sumthang fierce! Then another thought hit me like a ton of bricks. We’re it another epiphany? Well, not quite. But it were damn close! I needed me sum transport and old Hillary was dead and eaten by giant lizards. Maybe I ought to use the lizards to power my old wagon!
Well sir, I got down into that old swamp and wrangled me up 5 or 6 of them damned reptiles, then I hitched them to my wagon. I climbed up on my wagon, took the reins, and hit em. “YOW YOW!!!! HEY NOW!! GIT!!! LET’S GO NOW!!! GIT!! GIT!!!” It did not work worth a shit. Dumbass lizards. I would have had better luck trying to put my jizz ropes back into my dick. Oh well, not every idea can be a winner.
Then I heard a familiar sound approaching from the East. It were a car! I knew my problem was solved. As the auto approached I stood in the middle of the road waving my arms to git it to stop. It did. Then this old fucker got out and asked if there had been an accident. He had a real concern on his face as he stared at the road behind me: a broken down wagon, a mutilated and bloody mule corpse, and gigantic lizards lurking around everwhere.

I headed west fer an hour. I deduced that I wuz on Highway 10. After a bit I seen me a sigh fer Panama City Beach. I thought “HELL YEAH!” I knowd that PCB is sacred pussy hunting ground in the hallowed annals of fucking. I could already feel my cock getting hard. I stomped on the gas pedal on the Prius, but of course nothing happened. “What a fucking piece of shit!”, I said.

Then things took a dark turn. See, old Putin sed “Look, friend, the bitches are out of the game for a few hours, you know? Mount Ruang exploded on Wednesday, and experts worry that the mighty Indonesian stratovolcano may Collapse—causing a tsunami in the surrounding waters. Tens of thousands of people are being evacuated.
Scientists claim that Mali’s deadly heat wave a couple weeks ago—which killed 100+ people, most of whom were 60+ years old—would not have been possible were it not for manmade climate change. Shell Oil says that taking more action against climate change is “unrealistic.” A study in Nature Climate Change released on Wednesday forecasts losses of 10-17% of national GDP at 3 °C warming.
Flash floods killed 20+ people in Oman, and 1 in the UAE, forcing the temporary shutdown of Dubai’s airport—where a year’s worth of rain fell in a single day, setting a new daily record. In Mongolia, wildfires burnt 70,000+ hectares of forests and pastures. El Niño and the lingering effects of 2023’s Cyclone Freddy have been blamed for farming problems in Malawi. Scotland is experiencing its wettest April on record.
Good news: Greece has banned bottom trawling in its marine areas. Bad news: the ban takes effect in some marine sites in 2026, and won’t cover all protected waters until 2030. And, since Greece is the first European country to implement a ban, no other nearby nation has implemented such a restriction.
Some corporations know what many have long forgotten: “water is more valuable than oil.” One company flipped the water rights of a town in Arizona for $14M profit. States in the Colorado River basin are experiencing the prisoner’s dilemma the hard way—and Mexico’s growing water crisis is causing them to withhold water from Texas, portending a poor citrus & sugar season ahead. In central Mexico, drought and water theft, plus deforestation, are taking a severe toll on water use, fishing, and tourism. In parts of India, groundwater is gone, and farmers rely on trucked water to sustain their dying farms.
As flooding worsens in western Siberia, radioactive waste, deposited in two underground reservoirs, is threatening to resurface, potential flowing down rivers to the Arctic Ocean. Meanwhile, the desertification of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan & Uzbekistan is leading to increased dust pollution, which accelerates glacial melt and impacts human health. The once-large salty lake has transformed the land into a large desert, the world’s youngest, known as the Aralkum. This desert is a little smaller than Latvia—but growing.
A U.S. non-profit released the 24-page report on America’s 10 Most Endangered Rivers of 2024, and the results span the entire country. New Mexico’s rivers are the most endangered, particularly after a 2023 Supreme Court ruling cut protections for seasonal rivers. The loss of wetlands is leading to the destruction of two Mississippi rivers, the second-most endangered. Tennessee’s Duck River is dropping because of human overconsumption, #3 on the list. Drought, human use, and pollution is damaging #4, the Santa Cruz River. #5, the Little Pee Dee River in the Carolinas, is mostly at risk from the development of a new interstate and its destructive impact on wetlands.
“Climate sensitivity” indicates the relationship between CO2 levels and global warming. A study from Science Advances looked into ancient earthly temperatures (from 19,000 BCE) to better forecast future temperatures based on CO2 ppm. It adjusted our worst-case scenario threshold from 5 °C warming to just 4 °C. The Southern and East Pacific Oceans are forecast to warm faster than others. Researchers also determined that low-pressure storms sweeping into Australia are becoming more common—and carrying more water.
Part of Pakistan “experienced precipitation levels exceeding the historical average by 99 percent” from April 1-17, and lightning reportedly killed 28 people…Dozens others were killed by the storms— at least 135 dead altogether. Flooding in southern China displaced tens of thousands.
Parts of Bulgaria, Romania, and Türkiye set new records for April night temperatures. Western Sahara broke an April record, as did several Balkan countries. Mexico City also broke a temperature record.
19+ died in landslides in Indonesia. 15+ forest fires burn in Thailand. Flooding killed 58+ people in Tanzania over the last two weeks. Flash floods in Afghanistan slew at least 33.
Climate change is being blamed for cockroach infestations in Spain—as well as the changing genetic composition of cockroaches. Scientists say that, as wildlife dies, nature may become more of an “acoustic fossil,” still & dead.

A new strain of monkeypox—”mpox” as it was later rebranded—has surfaced in the DRC, and officials claim it has “pandemic potential.” This variant is said to be more contagious and doesn’t always appear on tests. Officials say it is transmitted mostly through sexual contact. This strain of Mpox “is endemic in an animal reservoir in nature yet to be identified,” one scientist said.
H5N1 continues to lurk in the background, with doctors alarmed about the virus’ expansion and terrified about a future human-to-human transmission. Another disease, “rabbit fever,” also known as tularemia is spreading through beavers in Utah; it can be transmitted through the bite of a tick or fly.
The World Bank claims that COVID increased poverty and income inequality in many of the world’s poorest countries. The advance edition of the 130-page report is heavy on financial graphs, and paints a mixed picture of the future.
“COVID-19 saw GDP growth in these {very low income} countries fall to 0.3 percent in 2020—the lowest rate recorded since the early 1980s….The combination of pre-pandemic vulnerabilities, recent overlapping crises, and wider problems—including the effects of climate change and increases in violence and conflict—is weighing heavily on these countries’ economic and social development….These countries account for 92 percent of the world’s food-insecure people, after a doubling of their food insecure populations since 2019….a more fundamental structural slowdown is likely to persist globally throughout the remainder of the decade…” -excerpts from the report
Several large regions in China are seeing buildings sinking—some by more than 1 cm per year—as water extraction accelerates. Many cities are sinking faster than the sea levels rise. In California, similar things are happening in the San Joaquin Valley.
Sierra Leone hasn’t paid its electricity provider—so their power has been shut off for weeks. The country owes nearly $50M (USD) to Karpowership, a Turkish energy company providing mobile power from a large powership offshore. In Ecuador, Drought has led to a hydropower crisis, feeding into their growing insecurity. Nigeria’s power grid Collapsed again last week, for the 6th time this year.
A British doctor who held a sign saying “no new oil” at a Just Stop Oil protest in the UK may lose her license to practice medicine. Meanwhile, Canada’s healthcare system continues to Collapse from extended wait times & overworked medical staff. Coffee prices hit new highs as shortages tighten in Brazil & Vietnam. British food prices are increasing as well, a combination of local flooding and international shortages & shipping issues.
A study into pollution from coal trains, supposedly the first of its kind, confirms the obvious: increased rates of heart disease, asthma, and pneumonia to those living nearby.
“I'm bedridden for two to three weeks if I try to do a gentle walk," said a former triathlete with a terrible case of Long COVID. A study in Environment International determined that toxins from some microplastics can be absorbed through skin contact, especially through sweaty skin.
Shadow banking, unregulated electronic traders, and the growth of private investing markets have reportedly contributed to increased instability in global financial markets. Institutions are rapidly trying to “de-risk” their investments, but the share of global private & governmental debt has never been greater—and the piles of cash held by colossal megacorporations like Amazon & Apple & Meta & Alphabet, etc. have never been larger. While most countries’ growth forecasts are fairly dim—or even negative—the U.S. forecast is still decent, carried, perhaps, by corporate extraction and rising consumer spending/debt.
The development of several Eurasian Wars is also adding instability into a sensitive system. The Gulf region in the Middle East holds 48% of the world’s known oil reserves, and the specter of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will complicate international shipping even more. Already, 4 major waterways—the Panama Canal, the Bab el-Mandeb, the Turkish Straits, and the Suez Canal—have been partially restricted by climate change or War. At least the Panama Canal is transiting more ships now that rains have temporarily returned to the region.

A NATO Maritime Commander is warning about the threat of underwater hybrid warfare, principally by Russia interfering with undersea cables. A couple Russian spies and a would-be assassin were arrested in Europe last week.
Some analysts believe we are close to a major nuclear incident, at Zaporizhzhia—or even a tactical nuke being detonated somewhere. The risk of World War III is growing, experts say. The ongoing development & deployment of suicide drones—cheap to manufacture/use, but expensive to intercept—is reshaping the battlefield, and forcing it into an economic/industrial domain again.
American funding for Ukraine and Israel and Taiwan has passed—$95B in toto. Another bill has passed to potentially force the sale of TikTok, arguably the world’s most popular app. Russia bombed an apartment & train station in Dnipro, killing 8 and injuring 28 more. Ukraine supposedly took out a Russian bomber in the sky. Russia claims they shot down 50 Ukrainian drones targeting Russian energy infrastructure. Russia is also hiring more soldiers in a momentary push to boost its manpower without using conscription—but they are also conscripting female convicts now. A former NATO commander claimed that Russia does “not have the capability to knock Ukraine out of the war.” Others disagree.
A deportation flight from the U.S. to Haiti took off last week, carrying 50+ Haitians back to northern Haiti. The besieged capital is being likened to a jail. Though a new transition council has been put together, wresting control from the gangs which torment the failed state poses a challenge, since few outsiders are willing to get involved in the profitless enterprise of stabilizing Haiti.
Burkina Faso’s relations with France worsen, and Chad’s government may be planning to kick out American troops stationed in the country. Kenya’s top military man died in a helicopter crash. Peace talks with a splinter group of the FARC have broken down in Colombia, and some authorities say the ceasefire has been broken by militants of the ~3,500-member group. India began voting last week; the six-week election will conclude on June 4.
The Philippines government has made steady progress for decades in eliminating rural communist insurgents, yet some 2,000 poor fighters cling on in the jungled islands. A more pressing problem for them are Chinese incursions into their waters, a years-long problem which is worsening relations between the two nations.
IDF forces are positioning around southern Gaza, gathering artillery, tents, and APCs for the upcoming Rafah offensive. The U.S. is urging caution ahead of the Rafah operation, but still withholds recognition of Palestine as a full UN member state. Hezbollah and IDF forces continue exchanging attacks in the aftermath of Iran’s 300+ drone attack on Israel.
Rebels in Myanmar are fighting near the Thai border, and making progress, and employing drones to drop explosives. Ecuador votes today on a number of referenda designed to give security forces more power. Panama’s leading presidential candidate is promising to close the Darien Gap and stop the flow of migrants.
Sudan’s Civil War turned one year old, and analysts claim it’s still getting worse for everyone in the area. One year on, Sudan’s middle-class has been obliterated, 8.5M+ people have been displaced, sexual violence has expanded considerably, humanitarian aid is being blocked, and the Darfur Genocide has restarted. Thousands of people flee the country every day, cholera is growing, and the old social contract has gone up in flames. There is no going back.

This is not concerning my marriage but towards my brothers. First you’ll need some background info but I don’t want to go too in depth. (Pardon any grammatical errors it’s late at night here and I’m wrestling two boys to sleep lol) So my parents marriage was never ever sunshine and rainbows. My dad has always been mentally and verbally abusive towards everyone and even physically abusive towards my two brothers. He is a vet with PTSD and all the works (deployed in Desert Storm, Panama, Operation Freedom if that matters any) so you can imagine how bad it was. My parents have been separated for several years at this point though. My eldest brother is only my half brother (moms side) and he’s doing great with his life and in his marriage and this doesn’t have anything to do with him but just wanted to point that out I guess ? But my other brother (also older but full blood and by 5 years difference) has recently married (I believe 2 years now?). My SIL had a son from a previous relationship (I believe he’s around 8) and they have a boy and girl together. Recently he’s started to get traits from our father and doesn’t realize he is acting like him. It’s gotten to the point where my SIL has called my mom and vented to her and my brother called my mom trying to prove that he’s in the right and just some utter bs. I called my brother (we haven’t talked on FaceTime in a long time let me add), to feel his headspace out and I noticed he is ultimately assuming a lot of the negative parental and marital traits that my dad has/had and I am getting worried for everyone’s mental wellbeing. I should add that my siblings are obviously traumatized from my father and my brother is also a vet (didn’t deploy during wartime to my knowledge though). Basically what I’m asking is how do I have a conversation with him about the way he treats his wife without triggering him? He has a gun collection and that’s the one thing my father knew not to own. I cannot get advice from my spouse as I can’t contact him at the moment (due to work) or stress him out at this time. I also don’t know any other men to ask advice from lol. I definitely don’t want to escalate this to police level as my SIL has family several minutes down the road from her where she can be safe if need be and I know he doesn’t have it in him to get physical. I just want to prevent as much friction as possible but still address our concerns. Sorry for the dump and TIA.

A 6th grade level report on the history of the US Draft, with focus on the Vietnam War

 
Tl;dr: US generally drafts 20yo first, then 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 18, 19. The Vietnam draft of 1969 was unpopular and stopped after 3 years. So much so it seems, that in 1975 the requirement to register was ended, and the department was (closed, put on standby, something). It came back 5 years later in 1980.
 
There are some nebulously defined terms, like draft, conscription, induction, called, serve, etc. You'll need to do the research yourself in the confusing areas. There is too much conflicting information.
 
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, I have been coming across some spotty discussion about conscription.
I am not the person to say any of the following confidently, so do not put trust into it without further vetting or research into it yourself, if you are similar. I was just curious and read a handful of pages.
I will discuss what I learned in an evening about conscription in the US, and point out current events surrounding Vietnam
I will try to separate them into factual events, and my own thoughts/opinions, in an effort to learn from history instead of repeating it. I will grossly simplify and ignore nuance (I have no idea what US military presence was like from 1955-1963, things occurring concurrently in Laos/Cambodia/USSetc. etc. And I have no interest in bickering over minutiae or varying schools of thought). I included a timeline of major world events between 1953-78 for perspective/context.
I will focus on the US. Perhaps it would be more relevant (to the war in Ukraine) to focus on Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or Russia. I choose the US because it is easy (lots of info available), and I lack even more familiarity with those countries in 1960 (and their histories). I have no idea how relatable any of this is to 2022 Ukraine/Russia, but hopefully we can all achieve a 6th grade comprehension of the US draft during the Vietnam conflict. And we can have a discussion to point to when it is brought up in the future.
I will finish with some basic summary/questions/opinions. I’m particularly interested in why someone decided the draft was required, if/how it changed the course of the war, what real impact did it have in the war effort, and what concurrent global events were happening/could there be a reason it was enacted in addition to the fighting in Vietnam.

• We’re looking at a rough time period from 1955-1975

Important Dates:

• 1954 “country” divided into 2 parts (after Ho Chi Minch defeats France I guess) – July 21
• 1961? the US refuses to recognize the communist victors from day 1, and were assisting France (at least financially) during the French war. The US is certainly involved by 1961-1963, I assume basically advising
• 1964 “unofficial official declaration of war” (Gulf of Tonkin Incident. War is never declared, it’s just presidential powers until the peace deal & US withdrawal. But this is conventionally considered the start of the “War” I believe)
• ~1964-65 huge increase in US troops. Peaks 1966-69, drops sharply 1970-72 (see table)
• 1969 July 8 US withdrawal begins First draft lottery is held Dec 1
• 1973 End of direct US military involvement (peace treaty)
• 1975 Fall of Saigon marks the end of the conflict April 30 (remaining SV forces lose)
• Population is roughly 30-50 million

Focus on troop numbers/draft, and possible related events:

• Early days: US military involvement increased from 1,000 > 23,000 between 1959-1964
• 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident (what you would call the start of the “war” which was never declared)

The United States committed some 550,000 troops to the Vietnam front at the height of the conflict, suffered more than 58,000 casualties, and engaged in battle after battle with communist forces in the region until its withdrawal in 1973. However, from a constitutional perspective, this conflict did not technically count as a war. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress sole authority to issue declarations of war. Since 1941 Congress has declared war only six times, all during World War II. Congress authorized troop deployment in Vietnam, but, because it did not issue a declaration of war on North Vietnam or the Viet Cong, the Vietnam War is, technically speaking, not considered a war in the United States.”}

• The first US draft is drawn 12-1-1969. They will be held once a year. (As I interpret, the 1st draft and/or rules is a snafu, and the subsequent yearly draft ceremony follows different rules)
• Draft is abolished 1973
• Direct US military involvement ends in 1973
• SV loses in 1975
• This pdf is definitely worth looking at for a timeline of the US Selective Service from 1917 onwards for a broader perspective, but idk what an “induction” is

 

So in simple terms how did the US draft function?

• A lottery was held once a year. Men were chosen based on their birthdays I believe, and secondarily by their initials
• In 1969, they called up men 20 years of age to 26-27.
• They did things differently for the remaining 2-3 years. In 1970, they called men born in 1951. In 1971, 1952. 1972, 1953 (who I do not think served, due to the abolition of the draft in 1973)

I am not sure how many men were drafted each year. Or how many went to boot camp, and then on to serve (1 year? 2 years? 4 years?). Or what they did (were they primarily on frontlines, maintenance/support, used in the continental US, or on overseas bases, etc.). How many died. How many fled the country.

"Normally, officials have a cutoff number based on the needs of the military. For example, during the 1969 draft lottery, men born between Jan. 1, 1944, and Dec, 31, 1950, were eligible to be drafted for the following year, 1970. Of the 366 possible birthdays in those years (leap years included), 195 birth dates were called for possible induction. That meant more than half the men born during those years were subject to being drafted. If your birthday wasn't one of the first 195 drawn, you were lucky -- you didn't have to go. The second draft lottery, on July 1, 1970, was for men born in 1951. For that year 125 out of 365 possible birthdays were conscripted. The third Vietnam draft lottery was on Aug. 5, 1971, for men born in 1952; in that year, 95 birthdays were called up for compulsory service."

I have seen one blurb: “Approximately 850,000 men were affected by the 1969 draft lottery.” but who knows what “affected” means. And, “An estimated 70,000 American men fled to Canada to evade the draft or as deserters. Overall, an estimated 60% of potentially eligible men escaped the draft in the Vietnam years, mostly by qualifying for exemptions of many different kinds.” (but numbers vary of course)
I have read anecdotes about some going to Germany, or finding roles in other Army positions outside of Vietnam. That everybody was pushed through basic training (no bad attitudes, sandbagging, etc. would be an excuse). That all warm bodies were accepted; maybe there were non-combat jobs for people with higher AGCT results.
 
The 1st draft in 1969 uses a unique set of rules from the rest, and was criticized for being unfair (something about they didn’t mix the balls well enough; I don’t know if there’s any allegation beyond that). These appear to be the regulations, I don’t understand them at all. A simplified explanation:

“The Selective Service held a lottery drawing on December 1, 1969. It was the first since 1942. A large plastic jar was filled with 366 blue plastic capsules, each containing a birth date. Rep. Alexander Pirnie (R-NY) of the House Armed Services Committee drew the first capsule, which contained the birth date September 14. That meant all men born on September 14 were first in line to be drafted into the military. Furthermore, after the birth dates were drawn, 26 letters of the alphabet were also drawn. J was drawn first and V was drawn last. Therefore, a man with the name Johnson would be called before a man with the last name Vickers.”
(for 1969) “For the lottery, 366 blue plastic capsules, each containing one date of the calendar year, were dumped in a large glass container. The capsules were then drawn out and opened, one by one, and assigned sequentially rising numbers. Congressman Alexander Pirnie (R-NY) drew the first capsule, which contained the date September 14. Thus, all men born on that date, from 1944 through 1950, received the first priority for call to duty. The remaining capsules were drawn by youth delegates who had been selected for that purpose from around the country. The last date drawn was June 8, which was assigned draft number 366. A second lottery was also conducted for the 26 letters of the alphabet, to determine the order of priority (by last name) for each date of birth.”

For the following years (1970, 1971, and 1972):

“The next lottery, held in 1970, applied only to men born in the year 1951; the lottery of 1971 covered men born in 1952; and the final lottery in 1972 applied to men born in 1953; however, men born in 1953 were not drafted due to abolition of the draft in 1973.”

• (One of those links page has some mildly interesting stats questions like Feb 29, twins/triplets, random births vs random dates, lack of middle names, etc.)
• (so, apparently, from day 1 of the draft [not of the war] ~20 year olds were being drafted. And the age range of men being conscripted was 20-26 or 27, sort of)

 
Apparently, the draft was so unpopular, that it was terminated, and, I think the agency was for a time dissolved; the requirement to register for SSS/equivalent was suspended in 1975, until reinstated in 1980.

The Selective Service System created by the 1940 act was terminated by the act of 31 March 1947
“The Selective Service Act of 1948, [was], the basis for the modern system.[17] All men 18 years and older had to register with the Selective Service. All men between the ages of 18 and 25 were eligible to be drafted for a service requirement of 21 months. This was followed by a commitment for either 12 consecutive months of active service or 36 consecutive months of service in the reserves, with a statutory term of military service set at a minimum of five years total. Conscripts could volunteer for military service in the regular United States Army for a term of four years or the Organized Reserves for a term of six years. Due to deep postwar budget cuts, only 100,000 conscripts were chosen in 1948. In 1950, the number of conscripts was greatly increased to meet the demands of the Korean War (1950–1953).[citation needed]
The outbreak of the Korean War fostered the creation of the Universal Military Training and Service Act of 1951. This lowered the draft age from 19 to 18+1⁄2, increased active-duty service time from 21 to 24 months, and set the statutory term of military service at a minimum of eight years. Students attending a college or training program full-time could request an exemption, which was extended as long as they were students. A Universal Military Training clause was inserted that would have made all men obligated to perform 12 months of military service and training if the act was amended by later legislation. Despite successive attempts over the next several years, however, such legislation was never passed.
President John F. Kennedy set up Executive Order 11119 (signed on 10 September 1963), granting an exemption from conscription for married men between the ages of 19 and 26. His vice president and later successor as president, Lyndon B. Johnson, later rescinded the exemption for married men without children by Executive Order 11241 (signed on 26 August 1965 and going into effect on midnight of that date). However, married men with children or other dependents and men married before the executive order went into effect were still exempt. President Ronald Reagan revoked both of them with Executive Order 12553 (signed on 25 February 1986).
The Military Selective Service Act of 1967 expanded the ages of conscription to the ages of 18 to 55. It still granted student deferments, but ended them upon either the student's completion of a four-year degree or his 24th birthday, whichever came first.”

 

So, in short, the timeline of the draft around Vietnam appears to be:

• 1965 (or earlier) LBJ, draft inductions increase from 17,000 > 35,000/month (the type that had been going on since 1917, not the full-scale draft. As I understand)
• 196? – there’s enough political motivation to enact a draft (Apparently NV was losing up to 250k men/year, and had a draft pool of about 300k coming of age every year. And the thought was to attrite that)
• 1969 – random lottery is held Dec 1
• 1971- registration compulsory. Classifications like conscientious objector, medical/psychological issues, prior completion of military service, etc.
• 1973- January, Nixon ends the draft (the Paris Peace Accords are signed 1973)
• 1975- registration requirements were terminated, SSS department is iced
• 1980- reestablished in response to USSR invasion of Afghanistan
• 2016-2020- various bills/lawsuits trying to abolish it, make it apply to both men & women, etc. Website crashed in 2020 after Soleimani bombing

(And I think the following is modern in 2024):

1. “Congress and the president authorize a draft: The president claims a crisis has occurred which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Congress passes and the president signs legislation which revises the Military Selective Service Act to initiate a draft for military manpower.
2. The lottery: A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during the calendar year the induction takes place, followed, as needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 19, and 18 (in that order).
3. All parts of the Selective Service System are activated: The agency activates and orders its state directors and Reserve Force officers to report for duty.
4. Physical, mental and moral evaluation of registrants: Registrants with low lottery numbers receive examination orders and are ordered to report for a physical, mental, and moral evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) to determine whether they are fit for military service. Once he is notified of the results of the evaluation, a registrant will be given 10 days to file a claim for exemption, postponement, or deferment.
5. Local and appeal boards activated and induction notices sent: Local and appeal boards will begin processing registrant claims/appeals. Those who passed the military evaluation will receive induction orders. An inductee will have 10 days to report to a local MEPS for induction.
6. First draftees are inducted: According to current plans, Selective Service must deliver the first inductees to the military within 193 days from the onset of a crisis.[90]”

Apparently the SSS was operating for 50+ years prior to the war, and “drafted” people both for peace/war activities, I didn’t look into it much.

• 1917 in preparation for WWI (21-30yo registered. 2.8m were drafted. 24m had registered). Draft was dissolved post WWI.
• 1940 1st peacetime draft (Burke-Wadsworth Act) (21-36yo)

So what’d I learn/What questions do I think are relevant?

1. Tl;dr: US drafts 20yo first, then 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 18, 19.
   
2. I did a really poor job summarizing the Vietnam “War”. #1, it dates back to at least 1944, and this looks at 8-12 years of it. I did not look into the support by China/Russia which seems necessary to do. I just looked at headline US-related world events. I did not look at tactics/warfare beyond headlines like Tet Offensive
   
3. IMO, history continues to demonstrate, that governments will do what they want. (If a country does not want to go to war, they will ignore provocation. If a country does want to go to war, they will choose any real excuse, or invent one themselves)
   
4. IMO, history continues to demonstrate that the side with more will, will often emerge victorious. The (Vietnamese) were fighting for their country for something like 30 years. I have no opinions about who you want to argue are the good/bad guys. I have no idea what happened in Vietnam between the 1880’s and 1940’s. I read a brief 2 paragraphs about HCM. Regardless, some group of ethnically (or maybe politically?) homogenous people had the will to fight an (I assume) very asymmetrical war for decades.
   
5. Average people don’t learn from history. See the Vietnam Special Military Operation of 7-10 years, peaking at half a million US men involved in a single year. “Between 1953 and 1975, the United States was estimated to have spent $168 billion on the war (equivalent to $1.59 trillion in 2022). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit. Other figures point to $138.9 billion from 1965 to 1974”
   
6. I do not have an understanding of how US troop numbers correlate to world events, or war-related actions. A very superficial comment could be the similarity between a troop surge/training-locals/leaving and Afghanistan, but I am not the person to make that statement. I can’t compare to the Korean War either. Maybe it would be worth looking at the USSAfghanistan war. It might be worth looking at the similar era Korea, Indonesia, Thailand.
   
7. I think the Nixon doctrine can be pointed at overly-simplistic comments, "but-but US uncredible ally". I guess it led to the Carter doctrine & wasting the same amounts of money, just in different parts of the world. I guess your region only gets a trillion dollars worth of attention before it's onto greener different pastures.
   
8. Apparently the draft was really unpopular
   --I think this is evidenced most strongly by the ending of the draft (I guess 3 years of actual lottery + serving?), and then the following events: What ever went on re. the SSS (it was temporarily shut down, or paused, or whatever), registration ceased being a requirement (from 75-80 iirc). But then it went back to status quo in 1980. (You can also find whatever protest events you want; IMO those are beside the point & subjective.)
   
9. The men are supposed to be delivered to the military within 193 days
   
10. No idea how long boot camp/training/whatever is.
    -What’s a “draftee” vs “induction” vs other terminology
    -How many were drafted (some quote of 850,000 “affected”)
    -How many actually were trained/shipped somewhere
    -What did they do (sit in a trench? Change the oil in a plane? Drive a forklift in Michigan?)
    -How many fled (think one link said 60% of eligible, or 70,000ish?)
    -Performance/morale etc.
    -There were around 10,000 deaths/year (unsure of wounded), is that enough to necessitate a draft?
    
11. I don’t really understand the timeline overlaps of, “Vietnamization”, GoT, and the draft.
    a. GoT Aug 2 1964. I assume things would have been pre-planned (I assume there would be a plan drafted, and started on, before Aug 2 1964, mildly similar to 2021 Ukraine, or any other military planning of resources/men/positioning)
    -1st draft is Dec 1 1969. I don’t really understand how long it would take to use those men. And why a draft was necessary (looking at the table, there were 385k>485>536>475 troops from 66-69, and it trends sharply down in 70/71/72. I don’t understand, “why would you draft men, then decrease presence/end the war”.
    b. How does that make sense with 1st US troops leave July 8 1969 ???
    c. Maybe civilians stopped wanting to volunteer in 1965-68 as it was clear things were ramping up. I assume there was a lot of uproar and averseness, similar to today.
    d. Maybe you need reserve in case of emergency, or to free up your careetrained units to operate your other priorities (you’ve still got to maintain SAC, submarines, overseas bases, domestic radar, etc.)? (you don’t have the luxury of 2022, condensing your resources in the Black Sea, or 1 border, leaving yourself more-exposed in other areas)
    e. Maybe there was some other worldly threat? I don’t understand why a politician(s) would shoot themselves in the foot with a draft, only to start the path to “losing” the waquitting. Maybe it was a deal with USSR or China – they have the Glassboro summit ’67, 1st H Bomb China test, Space treaty. ’68 Paris Peace talks, USS Pueblo, NK bombing halted. ’69 Nixon Doctrine. ’72 Nixon>Beijing, SALT I, ABM treaty, wheat>USSR. 73’ Arab Oil Embargo, “War” ends. ’75 Helsinki Accords, US/USSR space docking.
    f. ^ Maybe (the draft) was meant to be a global sign of resolve (“We are going to keep this up at a high pace unless you … [idk what each country wanted in 1963-68ish]”). Again, I don’t understand the politics at all, but maybe it could also be a sign of showing some order in the US government (“We are doing this all “extralegally”, and changing between 3-4 presidents, and yet the war output continues to churn”)

I don’t understand how the “legal” process for the draft went, or was started (I assume Congress is involved, but I have no idea when it was first rumored or pushed, and how long the process took. How news pushed it, how the public received it). 13. Doesn’t seem to be much consistency (or, stability). Look at 1972-1980, where it goes from the end of registration, (and possibly the shuttering of the department? I thought I read something to that effect, but I see on the sss.gov site only: “Registration was suspended in early 1975 and the Selective Service System entered into a "deep standby" position.”), to the return over the USSAfghanistan. Like, who cares about USSAfghanistan? But maybe it was cover for some other concern, or maybe there was fear the Soviets were using it [Afg] as a distraction [mobilizing to invade Europe or whatever])
    
14. The chicken littling of the modern era is real insight into the insight of other people. I'm totally new to this story (learned about it thru Means TV) but I think it's wild (but not totally out of the question) for a screenwriter to get iced by G-Men for a script that got too close.

DeVore went missing in the California desert, on his way home from a writing trip in New Mexico. After a mysterious last call home, in which he tells Wendy that he’s “pumping pure adrenaline”, she begins to suspect foul play.

But this is only the start of a strange story, one that saw Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude Van Damme get involved in the search. The CIA is front and center of the story, from warnings from British director John Irvin, the man behind the BBC spy series based on John Le Carre’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and then the involvement of Chase Bradon, Tommy Lee Jones’ cousin who worked in the CIA’s Clandestine Service before becoming the agency’s official liaison to the entertainment industry and who consulted on films such as The Bourne Identity and series such as Alias.
Then, there’s the Panama connection; DeVore was writing a script, The Big Steal, set during the U.S. invasion of Panama that might have blown the doors open on what really happened.
Haven't found anything on the sub but this. Feels like it might be more appropriate on a conspiracy channel, but I couldn't resist. Not to mention we got a couple old-heads in here who very well may have known DeVore personally. Anyone read into this or know more about his lost script, The Big Steal?

Just came back from a park on the intercoastal in Ormond. Wading the shore line, I could not find any sign of life. No hermit crabs, no sea grass, no pinfish. Not even barnacles on the rocks or pilings. Truly sad.
I grew up on the Grand Lagoon in Panama City, Florida. This was the mid 6Os. The water was clear and when you looked down from our dock it was like looking into an aquarium. Pinfish in the sea grass reflected sunlight like hundreds of silver dollars. Blue crabs, scallops, starfish were everywhere. Speckled trout could be seen swimming under the dock. Now, it is an underwater desert too.
So sad that future generations will not see this again. I have absolutely no hope that it is coming back anytime soon, if ever.

I binged the whole series in a day and I liked it but not as much as I wanted.
Pro : Chronological order : that point was the biggest pro of the series. Seeing Cheng and the Staircase project, Yun Tamming and Luo Ji was great. Yun Tamming and Luo Ji are some of my favorite characters and it was brilliant to put the series in order so I can see more of my favorite characters. That would have been sad to switch main character between every season.
Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade : that was the highlight of the casting for me. Wade is also one of my favorite characters and the Netflix show elevated him to the top. This actor rock and he was perfect for this role.
Artist direction: that was great. Probably something that was missing from the Tencent series. The effects were great, and I like the soundtrack (I like the soundtrack of both show). The panama scene was horrible in a good way.
Yun Tamming was another big accomplishment, even better than the book in my opinion. Staircase project was so good and so emotional. Book three has a fantastic story of a impossible love through time and space and I really like how they portrayed that whole story. That was so sad. Shoot out to the actor, he did a incredible job.
Cons ; Pacing. That was too fast. I wishes they give more time and more explanation instead of rushing it. 12 episode would have been great. Ding Yi story, the cosmic radiation story were absent and that was sad. Tencent pacing is also really bad in a different way.
Oxford 5 wasn't that bad but Auggie was boring and Jack useless. I'm glad Jack died. Can't wait to see more of Raj.
Da shi : My all time favorite characters was so boring. Tencent pick the best actor for this role and the Tencent series is exactly how the book describes him but even better cause he was more compassionate to Wang Miao. I miss the funny yet decisive, smart and dark Da Shi. Clarence character was a good character, but not good enough. Tencent Da shi was perfect.
The science stuff : one of the biggest downside of the series. They didn't dumb it down, they totally erased it. Cosmic radiation scene was replaced with something weird, Frontier of science wasn't there, turkey mataphore wasn't there, and the worst thing is they didn't even talk about the axiom of Cosmosociology. That scene with Luo and Ye was really bad and it's one of the most important scene to explain the Dark forest. I hope Luo will explain it clearly to Da shi later cause that scene of both of them in the desert is one of my favorite from book 2. The pool scene was so great in the Tencent series it's sad they removed it. Finally, the human computer was horrible.
Ye wenji : that was another bad shot. I didn't feel any compassion for Ye like in the book or the Tencent show. She is plain and boring, they removed alot of scene were we can see all her nuances and Netflix show made her almost like a big vilain. Her sleeping with the dude in the forest didn't fit her character, same for her having a child with Evan.
Some line and scene were cring. To many fuck and shit. The last scene with the bug felt like a bad parody in comparison to the Tencent one. The UN scene was rushed and I didn't feel all the epicness from the book.
That it. Overall it's was really good. I like both show in different way and I'm glad we have both adaptation. I think each show have is own flaw that are corrected in the other series so I'm ok with that.
I wonder were they will stop S2. I feel like they will either stop at the doomsday battle or at Luo Ji threatening Trisolaris with MAD.
There something I can't wait to see : Luo and Da shi in the desert, the droplet, and Luo scene on Ye wenji tomb threatening to destroy both worlds. That last scene if my favorite scene of all three book, and I honestly feel like the book didn't bring enough epicness to that scene. I want to see a destroyed Saul screaming in desperation to trisolaris ready to destroy both world. I want epic music and great artistic direction. I really hope Netflix will do justice to this grandiose scene and that they will do Luo Ji character as painted in the book.
For book three I can't wait to see : Thomas Wade resolution, the black domain scene, Yun Tamming fairy tale (please don't skip this part Netflix), Yun Tamming last gift to Chen and the word on the rock and finally Luo on Pluto. I don't care about the 2D universe, hey they do those scene right I'll be happy.
I'll watch Tencent director cut soon, hope the pacing is better.
