2024.05.20 04:23 Yassicasax 22 [F] Anywhere- Blondie looking for mature, older Asian men

Hello everyone! My name is Anna, I am 22 years and from the Netherlands (but casting my web worldwide as I will explain later). I’m blonde, quite tall with 5’7” and I am quite active. I love to go snowboarding, wakeboarding, and you can often find me in the gym or on the treadmill.
Right now I am finishing my undergrad in life sciences. Once I’m done later this year I have two deep wishes. 1) I finally want to visit Asia! I love traveling but never made it there. 2) I want to spend a few weeks in the USA exploring different cities because I’d love to do my postgrad somewhere there. I studied one semester in the UK which was incredible and I hope to do this again but now in the USA.
As to what ‘type’ I’m into it’s quite broad. Well I am generally attracted to older guys, or at least guys who are mature enough to know what they want and have a good conversation. I’m not gonna put an exact number on it but if you could be my dad we’re still ok, if you could be my grandad probably not lol. I’m also usually not really into K-pop type of guys who are all stylised and perfect. I’m more into guys next door, like someone who could be your friendly neighbour or someone you run into in the supermarket lol. Also - not a must - but I like guys with a bit of meat around the bones.
More details about me. I guess I’m a typical Dutch person lol. I love cheese, I cycle everywhere, and I can be quite straight to the point (if it’s too direct you can totally just tell me straight to my face). I also looove spicy food. Last month I tried Sichuan food for the first time and my mind and taste buds were blown away. I've also started trying to learn Mandarin last year but it's damn hard.
If you’re interested to just get to know each other then please reach out. Since I do have a few travel plans I’d be happy to talk to people all over the world because you might become my reason to visit your city or country haha. As a few conversation starters, here are some suggestions:
That’s it for now!
Oh yeah I’m a night owl by the way lol so time difference might not be that much of an issue
PS. If your response to a long post like this is "hey" then we're probably not going to be a match.

2024.05.20 04:15 tuanisx Friends Activity Tracker/Logger?

Is there an app/software that tracks more than just the song that my friends are listening to rn?
Friends activity has always been my favorite way of discovering new music (it’s like all those songs were pre approved by people I know and care about) but since it only shows the latest song I feel like I’m missing a lot of good stuff (I don’t have the time to be on the app all day). I’m looking for something that give me like the song history of my friends.
Is this something that exists or should I start talking to some AI about it and see if it can use the Spotify API along python or something to make it happen?

2024.05.20 04:14 ddgr815 Don't Put Faith in Class-Size Reduction

Don't Put Faith in Class-Size Reduction
The Detroit News recently offered an extensive look at the size of Michigan public school classrooms. A reader could be excused for coming away from the article with the mistaken impression that class sizes have an enormous effect on student achievement.
"Despite pleas from parents and local school officials who want the class sizes lowered to improve student academic achievement, Michigan still has no cap on the number of students in a classroom in K-12 schools,” the article explains. It continues, noting that there is also no plan to introduce “reduction programs to reduce crowded classrooms," despite the state's well-documented academic struggles.
Much further down in the story, Michigan Department of Education spokesman William DiSessa challenges the thesis: "The research supporting the use of funds for reduced class size as an effective strategy is minimal." He is correct, even if obliquely, about the state of the research. Only a handful of studies have suggested the effectiveness of the popular class-size reduction policy: fewer students in a class leads to improved student performance. But those benefits are mostly limited to certain situations, namely for elementary students of less advantaged backgrounds.
The research of large-scale initiatives aligns with DiSessa. Two states that set official statewide limits on class sizes saw practically no return from a huge taxpayer investment. Florida has spent more than $40 billion since 2003 to restrict class sizes, even though a rigorous 2010 study found "no detectable benefit" for student learning. In 2013 California gave up its program after 16 years and after spending over $25 billion, finding "no definitive research" to bolster the goal of improving student achievement through smaller class sizes.
The lackluster results can be explained in part by recognizing the tradeoffs that come with class-size reduction. Getting more certified teachers to watch over smaller classrooms entails dipping deeper into labor pools, producing only diminishing returns in terms of quality instructors. That difficulty applies even more here, as many Michigan school district officials say they have a hard time filling teacher vacancies, in part because a strong economy gives potential candidates more appealing job opportunities elsewhere.
But we should be asking if the perception that Michigan's classrooms are becoming more crowded is even realistic.
Cause for confusion in the News article springs from the presentation of the underlying data. Within one section of the story, the number of pupils for every Michigan teacher was separately identified as being 17.5 and then later 23. Both numbers come from the 2016-17 school year, but they rely on different definitions of whether a staff member is considered a teacher.
The narrower definition encompasses only teachers of basic programs in grades K-12. (Presumably, the broader definition also includes teachers in special education and career programs, as well as other licensed specialists assigned to work with students.) Michigan's ratio of 23 students for each teacher has trended down slightly the past five years, after three years of growing in the wake of the recession. The most recent student-teacher ratio is only about 2.5 percent higher than the pre-recession low of 2009.
For at least the last decade, classroom teachers have consistently made up only about one-third of the employees working in Michigan's public schools. In 2016-17 one public school employee represented each 7.7 students enrolled, a number only slightly higher than late last decade.
Consider what would happen if we accepted the article’s assertion and pushed to reach a student-teacher ratio of 20:1. That goal would require hiring more than 10,000 full-time teachers. Based on an average compensation rate, the cost in combined extra salary and benefits would top $900 million.
A more cost-effective approach would be to have schools reallocate dollars spent on other nonteaching staff or other expenses. This option would also benefit from the fact that local education officials don't need to wait for Lansing to do anything to make it happen.
But even if they achieve their goal, they can't count on it to move the needle on student achievement. For that, schools should be less concerned with how many students are sitting in a classroom and more concerned with who’s standing at the front of it. In other words, the research strongly suggests that teacher quality matters much more than class sizes.

2024.05.20 04:12 ChampionOfOctober Am I too petty-burgeois for meaningful political action?

I come from a petty-burgeois family. For a while we had a good relationship and similar politics, but then the 2018 Bolsonaro election and their support of it made me deeply reevaluate my politics, eventually leading me down the path of Marxism, then Marxism-Leninism, and now I'm investigating Maoism as well.
The root of my problems, I thought, is that I still cannot fully let go of petty-burgeois emotionalism I grew up with, I still cannot fully hate my family even though they are class enemies. But I eventually came to recognize that politics isn't about what I feel, and came to admit that, uncomfortable as it may be for me, they may very well have to be shot, and I will have to just let it happen. It should be fine, I would live to see them die for one reason or another and if this happens as collateral damage of a revolution it would be overall a really good thing even if I, personally, need some time to mourn later. No revolution with white gloves and all that. I already had people in my family die so I know I get over it eventually and that I can't put my temporary feelings above the whole future of the working class. With this I thought I was useful enough as a ML.
But when I started investigating Maoism it became clear that my petty-burgeois individualism runs even deeper than that, namely, I'm fundamentally unconfrontational and cowardly and reclusive and cannot honestly visualize the revolution actually happening within my lifetime, and this is the kind of stuff that hinders political activism and makes me prioritize personal safety over the movement. Still, I tried getting out of my comfort zone and being politically active anyway in my pre-Maoism days and joined the main revolutionary party in my country (Brazil's PCB), of Marxist-Leninist orientation (revisionist and outdated, as I would later find out in my studies). But where I live it was only a small cell and we were unable to do any significant political activism until it eventually disbanded due to internal conflicts within the party and due to everyone being too busy and too hopeless. And now that I'm studying Maoism, it all makes sense in hindsight. We were more concerned with distributing magazines than being in touch and at the service of the masses and that is a grave error.
But what can I do then? My problem isn't in the outcomes of the revolution or with the kind of society that will follow, which I belive to be overwhelmingly positive and I'm fine with giving up my tremendous privilege for it (I'm studying computer science, a very privileged labor aristocrat position, but it's mostly because it's a subject I enjoy than because of the prestige, I'm definitely supportive of wage equality and I'm fine with doing hard labor in the mines or in the camp or the factories should it be necessary, and I'm also fine with having my petty-burgeois wealth expropriated) even if I still have some things I'm a tad uncomfortable with due to my petty-burgeois upbringing and that I'm trying to change (again, I'm an unconfrontational coward). The problem is that now that I see how only Maoism and MLM can be truly revolutionary, I don't see how I could be in any way useful for helping the movement, as there is no Maoist organization I know of in Brazil (the ones we had that split off the ML party eventually gave up and became social democrats), and even if there was, with me as I currently am with my class background, I don't think I have at all what is required for the type of activism Maoism requires.

2024.05.20 04:09 j_blackrose BP meds and weight gain. How to talk to doc about it and get them to listen.

Short version anxiety induced hypertension. Especially white coat variety. In 2020 gained 30lbs on Metropolol on absolutely the lowest dose available and had bad orthostatic hypotension. The weight came on suddenly. Stop meds because of the uncontrollable weight gain. 2024 having massive medical issues that required surgery BP spikes again and I elect to go on meds pre surgery. Within a week on Lisinopril I put on 10lbs OH starts again. Within four months I've gain 20lbs.
I tried to talk to my PCM pointing out the sudden weight gain after being weight stable for so long. Also the OH returning. He started me on 30mg. He only was willing to drop me to 20mg. My BP is normal even a bit on the low side. My "high BPs" before meds were 150/90 range depending on how worked up I was during an appointment. Depending If I was having an active anxiety attact or not.
My PCM is not inclined to allow me to stop. He mentioned he also doesn't know what else I can try since I'm having the same issues on both Beta blockers and ACE inhibitors. Any advice on how to get a doctor to listen or any options that would be better in terms of weight gain and OH side effects.
My diet is good. My exercise seems not to be a factor. Since I was highly active in 2020 and now since I'm recovering from surgery not active for obviously reasons. The only consistent contributing factor is the meds.

2024.05.20 03:46 WhiteNinja84 What's the point of Eradication Missions at D6+?

I wonder who else thinks that Eradication missions on higher difficulties are just an absolute mess, especially on the bot front. They are my least favorite mission. Sure, they are simple, all you need to do is kill mobs... but starting from D6 onwards, it just becomes an absolute clusterf--k.
I do enjoy a good bit of chaos, but being a tiny map with hardly no cover and being absolutely shredded to pieces by a million rockets or having literal hordes of Bile Spewers, Chargers and Bile Titans pummeling you from all directions is not my idea of fun.
These mission types are the only ones I actively avoid because they are just pure frustration.

2024.05.20 03:45 mining_moron A Primer on Kyanah Religion: Part I Road to Hope

It seems like you guys like gods, so maybe you'll like this too! I tried to do something original and alien here...though maybe I failed idk.
In general, Kyanah are a massively polytheistic society, though their religious practices can't be divided into discrete religions with labels. Different gods have different geographical ranges where they are popular and while religious packs generally pick one or a few deities to worship based on their interests and disposition, they generally don't deny the existence of any gods they aren't actively worshiping--a list that may change over the years, depending on what the members of a pack agree works best for them. There is no definitive list of all recognized deities, especially as legendary historical figures and characters from popular media are often venerated in much the same way, blurring the lines considerably. There are gods that have had a consistent following for thousands of years, and short-lived meme gods that emerge from some popular trend, internet joke, or other bit of popular culture, are unironically worshiped by millions for a few years, and are then forgotten just as quickly--or, rarely, become mainstream.
For instance in Ikun, the three most popular deities are the god Iok, seen as a shrewd negotiator and diplomat, often mediating between other gods; the god Akirut, seen as a tinkerer, a creator of things, and an aggressive optimizer; and the goddess Tyorun, seen as a brave and relentless fighter who struggles against the odds to keep what she likes in the universe (this will make sense later). They all have dozens of temples in Ikun, and there are at least 80 gods who have 1 or more temples. The obscure Western Sector water goddess Kya briefly shot into the top three in Ikun around Y940 as a result of being a character in the popular TV show The New Gods of Ikun, gaining millions of worshipers in a few years, but losing most of them in a few more--it's no coincidence that in Road to Hope there are like three girls named Kya who hatched around that time! Much like Earth deities, there is no hard evidence that these gods exist, but it's also very tricky, if not impossible, to prove that they don't (and brings to bear questions about what it means for something to "exist" in the first place).
However, Kyanah don't necessarily see their gods as giant immortal Kyanah sitting in the sky working miracles. Popular media may depict them that way sometimes because it makes for better storytelling and characterization, but actual theological texts do not anthropomorphize them in such a manner. Essentially, the gods are seen as the natural result of an iteratively self-optimizing universe, intelligent processes that seek to refine and perfect the universe. Kyanahs' conception of the actual nature of these gods, whether they form packs with each other, are packs themselves, or are simply atomic beings, also varies greatly depending on culture, region, and each pack's own beliefs. But in general, as scientific discoveries have made it more and more clear that the universe is bigger than just them and their world and that Kyanah aren't special, belief systems favoring less anthropomorphized and relatable gods have become dominant, especially in the southern hemisphere.
The formation and existence of gods in Kyanah religious thought is intimately linked to the worship and belief in said gods. Theogenesis occurs when Kyanah start to believe in some god, the act of associating some set of divine processes and forces with a name, creating the god with that name. It's not so much that they believe this literally creates a god from nothing, so much as they are grouping together pre-existing divine processes under a name to better understand, categorize, and reason with it. The prevalence of belief in some god, and the power of said god, are correlated, or even one and the same, in many societies, as the power of a god is directly related to the extent that they influence the universe, which obviously includes the Kyanah themselves. Similarly, forgotten gods, no longer worshiped, are essentially dead gods, whose names have lost their meaning and thus their power. In a way, the Kyanahs' conception of gods can be seen almost as divine memes so powerful that they are sentient and influence the universe, with "memes" obviously referring to the broader sociological meaning, not funny pictures on the internet. Indeed, the lines between gods, socio-cultural memes, and sufficiently influential fictional characters often blur together in Kyanah culture, though notably, treating any living Kyanah as divine is usually but not always considered blasphemous, and packs who claim to be divine or have a divine member will offend most cultures and almost certainly be regarded as a fraud. Many religious scholars have devoted their lives to trying to make "divine atlases" that map not only the geographical, but also the ontological ranges of the countless gods, trying to pin down exactly what each name refers to.
The purpose of the gods--to iteratively refine and optimize the universe--ties in with the Kyanah concept of afterlife: not a place or alternate dimension that you go to after death, but the idea that you can be part of the next iteration of the universe. Entities that make the universe a better place--which for living Kyanah and their packs, naturally includes living morally (whatever that means to the culture in question) and fulfilling their role in life well--will be kept around by the gods in the next iteration, while entities that make it worse will be removed. In this way, Kyanah religious beliefs promote moral behavior (again, whatever that means to the specific culture in question) via the positive reinforcement of being with their packs again in a more optimized universe if they are good, and the negative reinforcement of never again being with their packs if they are not.
Thus the concept of anything resembling Hell is largely unknown in most cultures, and the closest thing to Heaven is the so-called Final Iteration, an idea that is widespread in some cultures, that the gods will eventually finish their cosmic optimization problem and create the perfect universe; believers in the Final Iteration are also split in whether it will be devoid of suffering and imperfections, or whether it is impossible to reduce such things beyond a certain amount, and the gods will eventually hit that limit. However, other societies reject the idea of a Final Iteration and believe that while the gods may gradually improve the universe and get asymptotically closer to the best possible one, they will never actually reach it. Some cultures believe there was a First Iteration and gods were there from the beginning, and there may or may not be a Final Iteration; others believe that there was no First Iteration and at some point gods arose by chance from random noise and began to optimize the universe in a guided manner, and may or may not reach a Final Iteration; others still believe that the gods have spent an infinite number of iterations trying to optimize the universe, and will never finish. Some believe that even the gods don't know if they will ever finish their task. There are also differing views on whether the gods are, collectively, perfect optimizers that will always improve the universe by some nonzero amount in each iteration, or imperfect optimizers that, while in the long run converging towards an ideal universe, may make some flawed decisions on the way, leading to some iterations being worse than their immediate predecessors. Some theologians and cultures reject the idea of Iterations entirely, instead adhering to a linear cosmology where the universe tends to get more complex and orderly over time, and the existence of gods--beings of extremely high, if not unlimited, complexity and orderliness--is an emergent phenomenon resulting from this, the resulting gods will more efficiently guide the increasing optimization of the universe. However, this view has been declining over time, especially in the past century or two, when Kyanah science has revealed the ultimate fate and heat death of the universe--or at least the current Iteration. Nevertheless, there are still millions of adherents who have found ways to justify this with their belief in a universe that increases in complexity and order.
These views have naturally made Creation myths a relative rarity on the Kyanah homeworld. It seems that primitive societies often believed that their world was eternal and infinite, with no beginning and no end in either space or time. Looking at the world it's easy to see why: it's significantly larger than Earth (and thus has more distant horizons), with vast biomes, no oceans or forests to break things up, few mountains (unless you're near an impact range), and seemingly endless seas of scrubland, desert, or plains stretching into eternity, hence primitive Kyanah often assumed that there was simply no beginning and no end to the world, and it's not too big of a leap from there to the idea that the world never began and will never end--in this cosmology, apparently the sun wasn't a unique object; suns rose out of the ground in the morning in different parts of the world, then burned out, fell, and sank into the ground at night. However, as Kyanah increasingly understood the universe and their place in it, more and more of the patterns underlying reality became clear--that they were not on an infinite flat plain with suns rising out of the ground every day, but on a spinning ball moving around one large sun, and there were many, many spinning balls out there spinning around their own suns--and a cyclical cosmology began to prevail over a linear one--though that is even less conducive to Creation myths.

2024.05.20 03:43 passports_parakeets Dimmy Likes the Cup Holders in the Palisade and Her Makeup Stash is Street Urchin Kate’s Favorite Thing to Raid - The Dirtles’ Week in Review

Monday
Dimmy: I hope you all had a great Mother’s Day! Stevie Kate surprised me with a balloon, baguette, half-eaten apple, and pinworms she picked up from the feral Denner tots, and I surprised Stevie Kate and London with a Sol Brush powdered sunscreen shill and carcinogenic particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in their lungs. Stevie Kate’s spent the past 48 hours in her pajamas tearing through a bag of rotisserie chicken, so I decided to resume potty training to get her to stop binge-eating chicken. I am finally ready to start potty training again now that we are going through so many diapers with twice as many Contentots in the house.
Dimmy: Ta da! Here is Stevie Kate’s adorable potty setup! Complete with balloons and princess underwear! Stevie Kate, are you ready to go on the potty and wear your underwear? Stevie Kate: I’m ready right now! Neighbor Boy Harry: Uh… Imma head out and go help my mom with her shitty stationery line! 🏃‍♂️🎒
Tuesday
Dimmy: Would you like to give us an update on how potty training is going? Sassy Kate: Would you like to give us an update on how you and daddy exploit your children on the internet for financial gain? Dimmy: I’ll give you a cookie if you detail every bodily function from the past 24 hours. So Fed Up Kate: I’ll give you a swift kick in your bad knee if you don’t stop talking about my toilet training. Dimmy: That’s it, your punishment for being sassy is you have to stay in your pajamas again all day. Sleepwear Kate: We all knew that was going to happen anyway.
Dimmy: I need to get your guys’ thoughts. With potty training, do I just stay at home? Or do I carry the miniature singing toilet with balloons attached everywhere we go? I’ve been staying at home the past 24 hours and it is torture! We haven’t even been able to go visit the Astroturf at the shopping center by our house. Stevie Kate’s been doing pretty good. We’ve had a couple accidents today, but she’s been doing really well for the most part- OW! Why did you kick me in the knee, Stevie Kate? Here, go play with this bag containing an entire rotisserie chicken and eat as much of it as you want. Mommy’s busy talking to the people in her phone who fund our lifestyle. Anyway, I can’t just stay inside for the next two weeks! That’s insanity! I need your help! How do I go out with Stevie Kate while potty training? Drop your tips in the box! I know I could just ask my sisters, Iris, or Meta AI on Instagram instead, but that doesn’t drive up my engagement numbers like responses from you sorry losers do!
Dimmy: Speaking of Iris, I did text it for craft ideas to keep School’s Out Kate busy this summer. Also I contacted Iris for a color analysis and Iris responded that bright orange parachute I wore car shopping looked great with my skin tone, and I should consider cutting up some of the parachute material to sew it into a dress. I tried to explain to Iris that it already was a dress, albeit a voluminous one, but Iris just responded with these bizarre outfit suggestions of monochromatic business looks for fall and winter where each outfit is the color of Tiffany’s self-tanner-applied orange skin. I tried to tell Iris it’s summer time and it’s hot as fuck here in Texas, plus I mainly wear athleisure and billowy dresses, not business clothes, but Iris said who cares, these aren’t real clothes anyway, just weird hypothetical Fashion Plates looks a robot mocked up. Iris said whatever I do, to avoid wearing cheetah print. What the fuck! That’s never going to happen. I love cheetah print. Still, I think you gullible assholes should subscribe to Iris anyway and use my code BOYAREYOUDUMB for 50% off your first month! Don’t you want to be able to TEXT Iris instead of carry a computer around 24/7 to use ChatGPT? I know that question makes no sense, since you don’t need four laptops in a Nordace backpack to use ChatGPT, but all of my followers are gullible idiots and will subscribe to Iris despite my idiotic statements!
Thursday
Dimmy is wearing loads of dark makeup and another gigantic billowy dress, and you know what that means… time to go car shopping again with paid pal Diana! Dimmy shared stories from Wednesday’s car shopping excursion to Hyundai and Kia and once again the trimmed-down troll was “too busy” to go along. Sidekick Kate was a good sport through the whole car shopping ordeal, despite hopping from bathroom to bathroom, the charge running out on her Tonies box, and her Mylar princess balloon sailing away in search of a beach to pollute. Screenie Kate forgave Dimmy for losing her balloon since she knows there’s always plenty more where that came from and she has Wina from Balloonish on speed dial. Dimmy sailed from new car to new car thanks to a strong breeze and her billowy dress, looking for the SUV with the most charging ports for all of her devices and the largest number of adjustable cup holders big enough to fit even the most gigantic of Stanley cups in her collection. She found the “Hun-Die” Palisade fit the bill, with chargers and cup holders galore. She wasn’t as impressed with the Kia “Tell-a-ride” because it didn’t have as many cup holders and ports to charge her numerous devices. Dimmy is now torn between buying either the Palisade or the Escalade because those were the only cars she found that rhymed with “getting paid.” Should she go with the practical, convenient “Mom car” Palisade or the super nice and luxurious Escalade?
Today Jen is grateful Kimmy, Stevie Kate and London are coming over to bring hugs and content. Stevie Kate was excited to show off her potty training progress to Minnie and Papa.
Jen: Stevie Kate, what are we doing today? Sugarless Kate: Baking sugar-free cookies on this damn, dirty floor, like usual. Jen: Why are you using ghost-shaped cookie cutters? Spooky Kate: Because Mommy is a ghost! Jen: Your Mommy is a ghost? Stevie Chef: Yes! Because I want her to disappear!
Tiffany was furious when she saw on stories that Kimmy, Stevie Kate and London were getting all of Jen’s gratitude and attention, so she threw a giant bow and no shoes on Lily and sped over to crash their party and divert all the attention to herself. She immediately whipped out her boobs to shill her Eby bra when she saw Dimmy nursing, claiming she and Jen might start lactating at any moment. Then she publicly shamed Stevie Kate for having an accident in her car seat on the way to Jen’s.
Meanwhile, London is still alive despite the clouds of Sol Brush sunscreen powder raining down on her face yet again as Dimmy’s fascination with demonstrating how to use the high-commission product continues. Dimmy headed to the airport to pick up yet another sister to help her out with London, but not before posting a Ritual vitamin shill so she could take the day off stories tomorrow.
Saturday
London is finally being a cooperative Contentot, smiling for Instagram from beneath her giant bow, and doing a picture-perfect Swaddle Stretch channeling her older sister’s performances from back in her newborn days.
Sol Brush is back in stock and Dimmy is bursting with joy at all the commission she’s going to make from more sales of the ineffective sunscreen, her kids’ lungs be damned. If Sunburnt Kate doesn’t convince Dimmy’s followers it doesn’t work, I don’t know what will.
Stevie Sunburn headed indoors to get a break from the sun and play with the robot bug toy Dimmy’s sister brought her. Thank goodness the Tacky Screech Owl found an Amazon link for the gift so she can make money off that too. Dimmy even had an active Active Skin Repair code, so she shilled it them sprayed Stevie Sunburn to give her some relief.
Street Urchin Kate looked like a Victorian Orphan by mid-afternoon as her Belle princess dress mopped up dirt, sidewalk chalk, Dimmy’s makeup, and everything else in her path. Dimmy left Disheveled Kate with her sister and cleaned herself up, threw on her Paris dress, and headed to a baby shower for the Houghtons’ wealthy family friend Anna. The beautiful florals and tasteful spread at Grange Hall were too elegant for the tacky turtle bunch, so Jen set the centerpiece flowers on fire with the votive candles to protest the lack of balloon arches, then escaped by helicopter to go terrorize another Texas city, Austin.
With two days off this week and tomorrow being Sunday, Dimmy’s Saturday shilling was at an all-time high. She’s linking up everything but the kitchen sink, and she’d link that up too if she had a code for it.

2024.05.20 03:35 CaptOle Gaijin Has a Poor Understanding of Statistics Pt 2 -- Proposed Solution

You may be familiar with my prior effort post describing the problem that Gaijin has in its analysis of statistics. You can find that post here for reference.
TL:DR for that post: Gaijin’s win rate-based balancing system creates a positive feedback loop for bad vehicles that generally pushes away bad players leaving only good players playing them, pushing them further up in BR. Same thing happens for especially good vehicles being played much more by worse players keeping the win rate suppressed, not because of the vehicle being bad but by a “skill issue” for lack of a better term.
Anyways, many people brought up good points and a lot of wisdom and personal experience that got me thinking of solutions. I am a PhD student in economic policy, so statistics is a daily activity for me. I asked my colleagues to look over a proposal to see if it is statistically robust, and this is the consensus balancing algorithm that would be better than what Gaijin currently uses. I won’t be explaining multi-linear regressions like I did statistical bias in the last post, but if you want a brief overview of what they are and how they work, please refer to these 2 videos:
Linear Regression (SLR)-- watch the first 7 or so minutes of this one
Multiple Linear Regression (MLR)-- this video is only 5 minutes so watch the full thing
Think of these videos as your daily brain nourishment for understanding statistics not just in War Thunder, but everywhere in the world.
When creating our MLR, we want to think of a model that answers a question about data that we have. In our case, we are going to be looking at causal inference. A popular example would be, what health factors of an individual would determine the risk of them having lung cancer. Relevant information for that regression would be a person’s age, history of smoking, diet, income, parent/family history, etc. By taking a massive dataset with all of this information, say of 10,000, we can fit a regression that estimates an individual’s chance of getting cancer by using data from an existing group. A sample model for lung cancer may look something like this:
Chance of getting Lung Cancer = B0 +B1X1+B2X2+B3X3+B4X4+B5X5
Where based on the dataset:
B0= Base Chance of cancer
B1= Effect of Smoking where X1 is a binary variable (0 or 1) whether a person has smoked regularly at any point of their life
B2= Effect of Family History where X2 is a binary variable (0 or 1) if a person’s family has a history of lung cancer
B3= Effect of Age where X3 is a person’s age in years
B4= Effect of Income where X4 is a person’s income
B5= Effect of Diet where X5 is a value of 0 to 100 of a person’s diet health, 0 being a perfect diet and 100 being horrible, ranked by an expert.
With this information, we can take any individual, person i, plug in their relevant data, and get the risk they individually would get lung cancer based on the body of data we used to create the regression. If we have an individual that is 60 years old, who has smoked, does not have a family history of cancer, has a pretty good diet (ranked 25/100), and has an income of $50,000.
We can get this person’s expected chance of getting lung cancer in the following equation:
B0 +B1(1)+B2(0)+B3(60)+B4(50,000)+B5(25).
Any Bx is what is known as the marginal change in expected outcome based on a 1 unit change of and Xx. Now, if we had actual values for Bx for every term, we would simply plug them in, and solve the equation given the individual’s recorded data. The outcome would give an expected chance of cancer for that individual. So, with that explanation out of the way, back to War Thunder.
To create an MLR model, we will have to identify what value we want to predict, and what kinds of data we will use to predict it. Since Gaijin uses win rate as their primary statistic for balancing, we will use that as the value we want to predict. To create a model that will be used as a baseline to compare all other subgroups to, we will assume we are using every single vehicle’s statistics for the past 6 months entered individually into a dataset to get a universal model for predicting win rate per game mode. This specific model will be for Ground RB. The value we are predicting is win rate, and the values we will be using to predict win rate are:
X1=K/D
X2=Point Captures
X3=Kill Assists
X4=Spotting Assists
X5=Shots absorbed and bounced
X6=Time per life
So a model would like like this:
Win Rate = B0 +B1X1+B2X2+B3X3+B4X4+B5X5+B6X6
With each of the B’s being the marginal change in expected win rate based on a unit change in any of the associated X’s.
Once we run the regression, we will get values for all the B’s giving us the expected effect each of these statistics has on win rate. We don’t know what this data is, so we don’t know what is statistically significant or not to keep in the model, so any one of these statistics could be insignificant, or surprisingly significant. Only Gaijin knows.
So, what do we do when we have the general model for win rate? We can correct for the bias encountered in the previous post by just looking at win rate by creating a player skill-adjusted win rate. Here’s what I mean:
What we will do is take the average of every account’s player statistics for the relevant game mode, in this case, ground RB, and input those values as X’s. This will output a skill-adjusted expected win rate. In other words, inputting the recent account statistical averages for the players playing a vehicle will output an expected skill-adjusted win rate for a vehicle. If a vehicle is below this expected skill-adjusted win rate, it should be a candidate to move down in BR, while if it is above, then it could be moved up in BR.
Imagine Russian premium 10.0 with the 2S38, TURMS, and T80UD. This is generally considered a very powerful lineup but played by generally worse-than-average players. In the current system, Gaijin will try to balance these vehicles to get to a 50% win rate regardless of the population that plays these vehicles, leaving them arguably under-tiered due to the skill level of the players. In the new system, all of the players who play these vehicles will have their past 6 months of player data averaged and plugged into the generalized win rate model to give an estimation of what that win rate SHOULD be based on the average skill level of the players. This could give us an expected win rate of 45% or maybe even 40%, but either way, it will probably be lower than the standard 50% that Gaijin balances their game around.
In cases with bad vehicles being played by particularly good players, they may still be seeing above a 50% win rate even though they’re overtiered. By decreasing their battle rating, it may DECREASE their win rate due to the draw of worse players to these now lower BR vehicles. This should change the population composition of a vehicle and combat the feedback loop problems described in the previous post.
If Gaijin is ever brave enough to provide anonymized player statistics and vehicle statistics, we can see the populations that play each vehicle and balance them around the power of the vehicle, not the prowess of the player. This, in my opinion, is a much better system than the current “balance all win rates at 50%”.
If you have any questions or want further explanation, let me know and I’d be happy to make an edit to this post to explain. I am also open to feedback on this rough model and method of balancing.
PS: The numbers in the models are supposed to be indexing and subscripted, which didn't paste over correctly from the word doc.

2024.05.20 03:32 IngwiePhoenix My experience with Kubernetes, as a selfhoster, so far.

Late last year, I started an apprenticeship at a new company and I was excited to meet someone there with an equally or higher level of IT than myself - all the windows-maniacs excluded (because there is only so much excitement in a Domain Controller or Active Directory, honestly...). That employee explained and told me about all the services and things we use - one of them being Kubernetes, in the form of a cluster running OpenSuse's k3s.
Well, hardly a month later, and they got fired for some reason and I had to learn everything on my own, from scratch, right then, right now and right there. F_ck.
Months later, I have attempted to use k3s for selfhosting - trying to remove the tangled wires that is 30ish Docker Compose deployments running across three nodes. They worked - but getting a good reverse proxy setup involved creating a VPN that spans two instances of Caddy that share TLS and OSCP information through Redis and only use DNS-01 challenges through Cloudflare. Everything was everywhere - and, partially still is. But slowly, migrating into k3s has been quite nice.
But. If you ever intend to look into Kubernetes for selfhosting, here are some of the things that I have run into that had me tear my hair out hardcore. This might not be everyone's experience, but here is a list of things that drove me nuts - so far. I am not done migrating everything yet.
  1. Helm can only solve 1/4th of your problems. Whilst the idea of using Helm to do your deployments sounds nice, it is unfortunately not going to always work for you - and in most cases, it is due to ingress setups. Although there is a builtin Ingress thing, there still does not seem to be a fully uniform way of constructing them. Some Helm charts will populate the .spec.tls field, some will not - and then, your respective ingress controller, which is Traefik for k3s, will have to also correctly utilize them. In most cases, if you use k3s, you will end up writing your own ingresses, or just straight up your own deployments.
  2. Nothing is straight-forward. What I mean by this is something like: You can't just have storage, you need to "make" storage first! If you want to give your container storage, you have to give it a volume - and in return, that volume needs to be created by a storage provisioner. In k3s, this uses the Local Path Provisioner, which gets the basics done quite nicely. However - what about storage on your NAS? Well... I am actually still investigating that. And cloud storage via something like rclone? Well, you will have to allow the FUSE device to be mounted in your container. Oh, were where we? Ah yes, adding storage to your container. As you can see, it's long and deep... and although it is largely documented, it's a PITA to find at times what you are looking for.
  3. Docker Compose has a nice community, Kubernetes' doesn't...really. So, like, "docker compose people" are much more often selfhosters and hobby homelabbers and are quite eager to share and help. But whenever I end up in a kubernetes-ish community for one reason or another, people are a lot more "stiff" and expect you to know much more than you might already - or, outright ignore your question. This isn't any ill intend or something - but Kubernetes was ment to be a cloud infrastructure defintion system - not a homelabber's cheap way to build a fancy cluster to add compute together and make the most of all the hardware they have. So if you go around asking questions, be patient. Cloud people are a little different. Not difficult or unfriendly - just... a bit built different. o.o
  4. When trying to find "cool things" to add or do with your cluster, you will run into some of the most bizzare marketing you have seen in your life. Everyone/-thing uses GitOps or DevOps and includes a rat's tail of dependencies or pre-knowledge. So if you have a pillow you frequently scream into in frustration... it'll have quite some "input". o.o;
Overall, putting my deployments together has worked quite well so far and although it is MUCH slower than just writing a Docker Compose deployment, there are certain advantages like scaleability, portability (big, fat asterisk) and automation. Something Docker Compose can not do is built-in cronjobs; or using ConfigMaps that you define in the same file and language as your deployment to provide configuration. A full kubernetes deployment might be ugly as heck, but has everything neatly packaged into one file - and you can delete it just as easy with kubectl delete -f deployment.yaml. It is largely autonomous and all you have to worry about is writing your deployments - where they run, what resources are ultimatively utilized and how the backend figures itself out, are largely not of your concern (unless Traefik decides to just not tell you a peep about an error in your configuration...).
As a tiny side-note about Traefik in k3s; if you are in the process of migrating, consider enabling the ExternalNameServices option to turn Traefik into a reverse proxy for your other services that have not yet migrated. Might come in handy. I use this to link my FusionPBX to the rest of my services under the same set of subdomains, although it runs in an Incus container.
What's your experience been? Why did you start using Kubernetes for your selfhosting needs? Im just asking into the blue here, really. Once the migration is done, I hope that the following maintenance with tools like Rennovate won't make me regret everything lmao. ;

2024.05.20 03:32 jasonryankelly SKY MONSTER (2023) is one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Let me just start by saying this movie is absolute trash, from writing to direction, pure garbage. Anyone involved in it's creation should be ashamed of themselves and never be part of any process in filmmaking ever again.
The film has so much nothing going on they actually show some creature attacking a plane as a couple girls huddle together in the cabin pretending to be scared for a few seconds before the story even begins, then proceeds to cut to "a few hours earlier" where the lead character is introduced, some "hot, rich girl" as she mopes around a large dining table with a selfmade birthday cake, celebrating by herself. Yeah, like this barbie would have no friends coming over or calling her. K. Super believable writing! When she confronts her flight control tower daddy about missing her birthday, he had a surprise waiting for her all along, and she needs to get ready to go somewhere with him immediately. Hope you didn't have any plans!
As they get ready to leave, one of her friends shows up to the house and birthday girl's father asks her not to say anything about the surprise. She agrees and gives the birthday girl her gift, some sort of jewelry, but its never explained what it is, and you think it will have importance in the story. Nope! Never seen again. So off they go in the car where the dad tells the friend to blindfold birthday girl before they get to their destination. Obviously he's dressed in his work outfit, so they're headed to the airport. Not sure what a blindfold is going to mask her from when theres a bunch of loud planes taking off near her. Is this Disneyland?
So they obviously make it to the airport (I'm shocked!) and "hot, rich girl" takes off the blindfold to see all her "hot, rich girl" friends and a private jet ready to take them on a trip to some island for a bar hopping party. Here we learn her friend that was part of planning this trip, or at least had knowledge of it happening ahead of time is afraid to fly and is now acting like she just learned of this trip herself. Weren't you in on this?! What was that dialogue between you and her dad at the house then? Bad writing? Terrible direction? Take your pick. They're both true.
Now on the plane, everyone is dancing around celebrating, playing dress-up while trying to fuck the "gruff and hunky" obviously foreign flight attendant for another 15 minutes before anything actually related to the premise of this movie begins happening. The plane enters a random stormfront where they can't deviate away from because theres some sort of mysterious magnetic pull dragging the plane along a circular flight path. Reason? Unknown. Its the Bermuda Triangle... I think. They only mention it once very nonchalantly. The fear of flying friend notices something out the window as turbulence and lightning begins shaking the plane, but everyone just thinks shes going crazy, or tweaking off the air sickness pills that happened to be hardcore psychological drugs the "gruff and hunky" slipped her as he tried to sex predator her up when she was getting nauseous. So this scumbag went for the obviously less attractive girl that showed no interest in him, but grimaced at the easy and far more attractive girls actively trying to latch onto his balls? Realism!
One of the party girls manages to somehow snap a photo with her phone that shows a giant squid attached to the plane, saying she thinks she sees something in the clouds too. Bitch! You have a crystal clear photograph of a giant squid attacking your plane like you just screenshotted this from later in the movie (which they obviously did), a picture with an angle from OUTSIDE THE PLANE! I guess that's the signal for the giant sky squid to attack, yet nobody seems to see it at first. There's no jarring movement or altitude change, just a noise like something slapped the roof. Not even the tentacles wrapped around the plane and over a few of the windows, INCLUDING THE COCKPIT, seems to be enough for anyone to notice the thing yet, just the fact that the plane is somehow a half ton heavier than when they left.
The squid begins pulling people out and eating them like cookies from a jar, somehow not depressurizing the cabin of the plane in the process. The girls even manage to open the door as a rescue plane sent by tower daddy attacks the squid and scares it off. A rescue plane with no way to rescue anybody, so they just become squid food as it comes right back and blows it up, leaving the squid completely unharmed by the massive blast, and back to attacking the original plane. Glad they showed up. So now the only option is to turn the plane off. Thats what they were told by tower daddy that randomly stays in contact with them. Shut the power off. Why? No clue. They didn't mention anything about the squid attacking because of energy, or that will somehow get them out of the magnetic field, just shut the power off. So they do. The plane ends up falling all the way to the ocean and just seems to skip off the water, and somehow they dont crash, they end up back in the air. Why? I donno! They just do. Everyone celebrates like its some sort of victory, but then the squid just comes and kills the rest of the girls. The movie ends with tower daddy and crew angrily waving their arms around as the camera silently pans out. No shit. This movie was absolutely terrible. Easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

2024.05.20 03:28 temporaryAccount6574 Am I too petty-burgeois for meaningful political action?

It made me realize why "white Maoists" like me are kind of a meme, even if I agree in theory only people who were in touch with the masses from the start can truly guide them in reality, and I'm the opposite of that, and a lot of work on myself will be needed to change that, and unfortunately the bulk of PCB is similarly out of touch. Ultimately I belive I can only start freeing myself from this kind of petty-burgeois thinking by committing class suicide, distancing myself from my parents and rejecting their generational wealth, it will be a long and bitter process but I think I can do it eventually and I've already been considering it for a while. But even if it's the right thing to do, even if that really radicalizes me, even if I do get the courage to take part in more dangerous political activities and really put the collective above me, what then? Do I just go back to the MLs with all their flaws? The more I think, the more my conclusion seems to be "there's nothing I can do and I'm not the kind of person revolutionary organizations need,"

2024.05.20 03:15 Successful-Show-6774 Summer camp suggestions (please help!)

My son’s summer camp was canceled, and was supposed to start in a week so now I’m scrambling. 😰 Any suggestions for 5 year olds? I’m tempted to keep him at his pre-K/daycare now, but would love him to do something different & fun!

2024.05.20 03:03 ID4throwaway LAPS - School Lunch Image Request

Hi all, my son will enter Pre-K this year and my wife is a bit worried about the lunch options. Does anyone have any photos of what school lunches look like? It can be any lunch at any school in the district. I am pretty sure they are fairly consistent. If I am wrong, please let me know. Thanks!
