2024.05.29 00:56 fiveguys_isbest Is this legit?

I have a 12 year old Bradford White water heater in a rental house (in a different state so I can’t fix this myself). When I lived there, the pilot light went out every few months, I think due to high winds coming down through the flue but could obviously be other issues. I could re-light it pretty easily, I just had to use a lighter because the igniter button was broken.
Fast forward, the pilot light went out on my tenant and though my plumber was able to relight it, he thinks I should replace the whole heater solely because it’s 12 years old. The tank seems to be in otherwise great condition- no leaks or signs of corrosion, but I don’t know that it’s ever been flushed or anode rod replaced (admittedly I didn’t do it in the 3 years I lived there - kicking myself now). Is it worth trying to diagnose and fix it or should I listen and just replace the whole thing? Thank you for any advice!

2024.05.28 16:56 FAUguy Bradford White or Rheem 38g Electric Lowboy?

Hello, I have a townhouse I purchased in 1996 in South FL built in 1986 and the only appliance from '86 is the original RUUD 38 gallon 3500W/240V water heater. Even though it isn't leaking, we want to replace it due to age and to preempt any leaks or issues.
For the Rheem, the only one they make for HD is the model XE38S06ST38U1 from HD, that is 38 gallon with 3800W/240V elements with water heater blanket included. Or the better built Rhreem PROE38 S2 RH95 B. This is the version that is only available by contractors at supply stores and comes with 4500W elements that would have to be replaced with 3500W or 3800W.
But from some research, I had heard good things about Bradford White and it looks like they make the lowboy model RE240L6 38 gallon that comes with a heater blanket. Looking at the Ferguson site, it shows one of the local stores have them in stock but with 4500W heating elements installed. That would means I would have to buy the two 3500W or 3800W elements separately. I guess the B.W. tanks can't come from the factory with 3500W or 3800W elements installed instead of 4500W? Also, is there a big difference between there regular Copper element and the Incoloy element?
What I'd like to know is since I'm limited by space (height) and it would have to be a lowboy tank, what is my best option? Is there a major advantage with Bradford White over Rheem? From what I've read in here, everyone seems to say to stay away from the models told on "big box" stores like HD.
Thank you.

Admissible Testimonials of State of Loc Nation Citizens Victim Impact Statements Cc: Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services One of the rights guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution is the right of a suspect to confront witnesses against him or her. The Crime Victims' Rights Act (CVRA), 18 U.S.C. § 3771, is part of the United States Justice for All Act of 2004, Pub. L. No. 108-405, 118 Stat. 2260 (effective Oct. 30, 2004). • The right to full and timely restitution as provided in law. • The right to proceedings free from unreasonable delay. Based on the evidence presented regarding Captain Willie Lynch Story and Colonel Charles Lynch law, it's evident that generational damage has resulted from broken homes, domestic violence, unbalanced opportunities in education, unfair targeting by authorities, and systemic oppressions. Injustice 1. Martin Luther King Jr. once wrote, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." (Letter from Birmingham Jail, 1963). 2. Nelson Mandela famously said, "I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." (Rivonia Trial Speech, 1964). 3. Harriet Tubman's words resonate: "I had reasoned this out in my mind; there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me." (Interview with Sarah Bradford, 1865). Children of Generational Kidnapping During the Illegal Transatlantic Slave Trade 1. Frederick Douglass boldly stated, "I appear before you this evening as a thief and a robber. I stole this head, these limbs, this body from my master and ran off with them." (Speech at the American Anti-Slavery Society, 1848). 2. Olaudah Equiano vividly described the horrors of slavery: "The shrieks of the women, and the groans of the dying, rendered the whole a scene of horror almost inconceivable." (The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, 1789). 3. Sojourner Truth's powerful words echo through time: "I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman?" (Ain't I a Woman? Speech, 1851). Racism 1. James Baldwin's poignant reflection encapsulates the Black experience: "To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time." (Notes of a Native Son, 1955). 2. Malcolm X asserted the rights of African Americans: "We declare our right on this earth...to be a human being, to be respected as a human being, to be given the rights of a human being in this society, on this earth, in this day, which we intend to bring into existence by any means necessary." (Speech at the Founding Rally of the Organization of Afro-American Unity, 1964). 3. Rosa Parks expressed her desire for freedom: "I would like to be remembered as a person who wanted to be free... so other people would also be free." (Interview with Rosa Parks, 1995). Identifying current victims of injustice, slavery, and racism can be complex due to the ongoing and evolving nature of these issues. However, here are some examples of groups and individuals who have been identified as victims in recent times: Injustice 1. Uyghur Muslims in China: The Uyghur ethnic minority in the Xinjiang region of China faces mass internment, forced labor, and other severe human rights abuses. The Chinese government has been accused of committing cultural genocide against the Uyghurs. 2. Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar: The Rohingya people have faced brutal military crackdowns, leading to widespread displacement, with many fleeing to Bangladesh and other countries. The United Nations has described the actions against them as a textbook example of ethnic cleansing. Children of Generational Kidnapping During the Illegal Transatlantic Slave Trade 1. Modern-Day Slavery in Various Countries: Human Trafficking Victims, particularly women and children, are trafficked globally for purposes of forced labor, sexual exploitation, and other forms of modern-day slavery. Countries like India, Bangladesh, and Nigeria have high incidences of human trafficking. 2. Qatar’s Migrant Workers: Migrant workers in Qatar, many from South Asia, have faced exploitative labor conditions while working on infrastructure projects, including those related to the FIFA World Cup. Reports include cases of passport confiscation, non-payment of wages, and unsafe working conditions. Racism 1. African Americans in the United States: African Americans continue to face systemic racism in various aspects of life, including criminal justice, employment, housing, and healthcare. The Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted ongoing police brutality and racial disparities in the justice system. 2. Indigenous Peoples in Various Countries: Indigenous communities worldwide, including in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Brazil, face ongoing discrimination, land dispossession, and marginalization. They often suffer from poorer health outcomes, lower educational attainment, and higher rates of poverty compared to non-Indigenous populations. 3. Romani People in Europe: The Romani people, also known as Roma, face widespread discrimination and social exclusion across Europe. They often live in segregated communities and have limited access to education, employment, and healthcare. It explores the history of racism in the United States through Baldwin's reminiscences of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. 3. "The Central Park Five" (2012) - Directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon, this film tells the story of five Black and Latino teenagers who were wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park in 1989. It highlights issues of racial profiling and 4. "Get Out" (2017) - Directed by Jordan Peele, this horror film uses suspense and satire to address issues of racism and exploitation experienced by African Americans. 5. "The Color Purple" (1985) - Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel by Alice Walker, this film depicts the life and struggles of an African American woman in the early 20th- century South. 6. "Mississippi Burning" (1988) - Directed by Alan Parker, this film is based on the true story of the FBI investigation into the murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi in 1964. 7. "American History X" (1998) - Directed by Tony Kaye, this film examines the life of a former neo-Nazi who tries to prevent his younger brother from following the same path of racism and violence. 8. "The Help" (2011) - Directed by Tate Taylor, this film explores the lives of African American maids working in white households in Jackson, Mississippi, during the Civil Rights Movement. 9. "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) - Directed by Robert Mulligan and based on Harper Lee's novel, this film tells the story of a lawyer in the Depression-era South who defends a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. 10. "Fruitvale Station" (2013) - Directed by Ryan Coogler, this film is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, a young Black man who was shot by a police officer at the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland, California. Rev Dr. Christina Clement's Personal Story Rev Dr. Christina Clement's personal journey epitomizes the enduring struggle against systemic oppression. Married high school sweetheart which lead to broken home marred by abusive relationships, she experienced firsthand the consequences of societal neglect and racial discrimination. Despite her resilience, Rev Dr. Clement faced numerous obstacles, from inadequate educational opportunities to the prevalence of crime and violence in her neighborhood. Her name, Christina, was chosen by her mother as a means of circumventing racial bias and discrimination in employment. This poignant decision reflects the pervasive nature of racism and its impact on individuals' opportunities and livelihoods. Even in the face of adversity, Rev Dr. Clement persevered, advocating for justice and equality in her community. Legal Context: Motion of Default Judgment The time frame for a Motion of Default Judgment to be signed and recognized varies depending on the specific circumstances of the case and applicable legal procedures. However, the delay in addressing such motions can serve as further evidence of systemic oppression within the legal system. Despite the clear merits of the case and the rights afforded to victims under the law, bureaucratic hurdles and institutional biases may impede the timely resolution of legal proceedings, perpetuating the cycle of injustice. By amplifying the voices of individuals like Rev Dr. Christina Clement and acknowledging the systemic barriers they face, we affirm our commitment to combating racial discrimination and ensuring equal access to justice for all. There are thousands of victim statements through poetry, court records, song, movies, etc. The pervasive impact of historical injustices continues to haunt our present and jeopardize the future of generations to come. From the enduring legacy of systemic racism to the devastating effects of substance abuse, such as the introduction of fentanyl to our youth, the toll on our society is immeasurable. Considering these challenges, it is imperative to embark on a path of comprehensive restitution and repair. The proposed remedies outlined in both Volume 2 - International Territory and Volume 3 - National Territory of Revealed the Kingdom of Locs Nazirite Vow continues, targeting a population of 1.4 trillion and 4.2 million respectively, are vital steps toward addressing the deep-rooted wounds inflicted upon our communities. Central to this endeavor is the recognition of the State of Loc Nation as a sovereign state country, entrusted with the governance of over 440 electors. Under this framework, the administration, led by President Rev Dr. Christina Clement, is poised to enact transformative change that aligns with the aspirations and needs of its citizens. Crucially, this transformative agenda necessitates a comprehensive overhaul of our existing constitutional framework. By adapting our laws and institutions to better serve the interests of the people of Loc Nation, we can lay the foundation for a more just, equitable, and prosperous society. As we embark on this journey of healing and renewal, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to justice, equality, and the well-being of all members of our community. Together, we can build a brighter future for Loc Nation and pave the way for a more inclusive and harmonious world.

What is wrong with this water heater setup venting?
Recently purchased a new house, Brought in a plumber to assess/fix some of the regular issues. Upon seeing the heater he said that it is not up to code and will need to be completely replaced. He mentioned something about how the right vent package was not used for the installation. This heater is <4 years old. It is a townhouse with hydronic furnace if that helps. I am definitely worried about CO dangers of heater and willing to replace if it's the right thing to do but don't want to do something intrusive for no reason. Any help is greatly appreciated :) I have these pics from the inspection and interestingly the inspector didn't mention a problem with the setup at all. https://imgur.com/a/SqZC2Lo

2024.05.27 22:00 SkippytheCKCS Bradford White ECO Defender water heater troubleshooting

We have 2 identical units next to each other in the corner of our garage. I randomly noticed that one of them is blinking with 10 red flashes (the other is blinking green normally). Per the manual , 10 red flashes indicates "Insufficient combustion air detected. Reset system".
My question is around how exactly to 'reset' the system. I found a video online which describes how to reignite the pilot light, which I presume is different from 'resetting' the system. I found a couple other videos that mention a small button between two wires that pops up when the system needs to be reset, but mine isn't 'popped up', so I don't think I can push it in further with normal force. Also, some videos/articles/posts mention making sure the power is off (via the breaker or otherwise) when performing the 'reset'. But wouldn't the system need power to be 'reset'? As you can tell, I'm terribly confused here, so any clarification would be very welcome and appreciated.
In regards to the cause of this error message, I did find another post where someone was also getting the same error message, and in his case it seemed to be due to the sensor freaking out due to some air movement. Not sure that's our issue here however, since the other unit right next to the problem one seems to be fine.

2024.05.26 09:07 Moneyisessential My water heater has a faint gas smell…heavy anxiety.

I have a 2013 Bradford White water heater with a Honeywell igniter.
Ten flashes displayed 8 months ago and a plumber charged me $200 just to reset the pilot light.
Today the hot water went out again and I did the same thing.
I had some difficulty getting the green light to flash so I had to hold the pilot light down for 2 minutes total over multiple attempts.
It eventually started working but after opening the door (located outside on a balcony), it had a faint smell of gas that’s stronger as I got closer to the floor.
I won’t want to call my apartment maintenance as they completely ignored a gas leak from my washedryer unit.
I’m open to calling the gas company to check it out but I’m thinking maybe it was residual gas from the pilot tests?
It might be coming from the yellow gas line itself but I’m not sure. I desperately need to take hot water and don’t want to have it cold again.
I also don’t want to blow up into pieces or die from carbon monoxide poisoning.
What should I do?

2024.05.25 01:52 DickStripper Bradford White Electric Board Spark

Brand new electric BW 40 gal.
Have had issues setting temp - seems like only Very Hot setting worked. So I’m always in there turning that dial. Some days it’s blazing hot. Next day cold.
In troubleshooting that I see the red reset button suggestions. Did that last week and boom. Hot water is back.
Today, cold water again, I clicked reset without shutting off power at the breaker box.
The wired area to the left of the temp setting on the water heater sparked and popped when I depressed the reset button.
With that said, please for the love of God, tell me a fried control board can be replaced without moving the unit.
Going to wait a few hours to see if it starts heating.
Appreciate any suggestions or knowledge about replacing electronics if i friend it.

2024.05.20 22:25 ZhuGeTao Opinion on which unit to buy, Goodman vs Amana

Hey all.
Replacing my old HVAC system and water heater with new high efficiency system so I can tear down my leaky utility flue. I've gotten several quotes that are all hovering around $15k. For reference, we're in Overland Park, Kansas. House is about 1,850 sqft., two stories plus a basement.
I've narrowed it down to the following two. Both come with 10 year parts warranty, 10 year labor warranty, 1 year maintenance, and 16x25x4 cabinet, and lifetime unit replacement for catastrophic issues, e.g. failed compressor, cracked heat exchanger, etc.
A/C: Goodman, 14.3 SEER2, 3.5 ton, single stage.
Furnace: Goodman, Single-stage multi speed ECM gas 96%, 80k btu
Water Heater: Bradford White 50 gallon powervent
Cost: $14,968
A/C: Amana, S-series 3.0 ton variable speed compressor with inverter. Up to 17 SEER2.
Furnace: Amana, AMVC96 two stage variable speed gas, 80k btu.
Water Heater: Bradford white 50 gallon powervent
Cost: $17,619
Worth the extra cost for the S-series inverter a/c and two stage furnace? Price reasonable?

2024.05.20 18:52 DaddyAndSalope Tips for a strong start! 200hrs and power run to T2 Cap.

200+ hours, 5+ full restarts and these are the tactics I use to excel and get over many bottle necks. When I first played I struggled a lot in the early game balancing and managing resources. Currently I am on day 60 with 3 towns liberated, 25 peasants, 5k gold, 12k renown. I spend A LOT of coin on food for buffs/books
Base Location
You can start anywhere on the upper map. No one spot is exceptional, the things to consider are proximity to 2 ores (Tin and Copper), Reeds, and Hunting. You want to limit transport time of your peasants and their tiny little inventory. wherever you start, place your first stockpile and a travel sign on the road, you are going to go back and forth a lot to this location. Ensuring storage and food crate are close to the sign will speed things up.
I suggest the large open patch South East of Haerndean; it's straight south of the pond in Haerndean with a tin node.
Travel Signs
Travel Signs everywhere! You will need a travel sign at each village but you also need them scattered at key POI and crossroads. The block on fast travel when a patrol is passing is huge (it's gotten bigger since launch). You need extra sign posts at area's you pass often or that are along major roads that patrols use often. Do your signs sooner rather than later (first 10 days). recruit your first 2-3 peasants then focus on getting your signs down at each village, Aleks hut (swear he's the only real herbalist) and the wheat farm south of Padstow. You also need to make the run down to Horndean, Crasmere, BlackRidgePool and on the swamp road. Get signs placed ASAP. You need the merchant's buffs (more below)
Recruitment
Recruit them all! Most of your peasants will be from Haerndean, a couple from Padstow. Don't worry too much about stats/job skills. Perks are the only thing that really matters, skills can be improved quickly. With apprentice level peasants if you get a bad roll on perks, recruit them, strip them naked and expel them. Apprentice level peasants the game will respawn another peasant that is the same type/tier. You are gonna want 3/4 of your army to be sword/shield and 1/4 archer. 2 handed weapons are not an effective option until early T3.
EDIT: once you start to liberate towns you will want to weed out all your non apprentice level peasants. you recover renown when you expel them and it reduces the cost of your next peasant. if the main stat max is below 7 you will want to replace them. Lower tier peasants can get combat perks at 7.
Use clothing to identify peasants and their roles. I use different helmets to quickly identify what a peasant does until late T2.
Focus on perks/combat skills
Peasant Tiers
Peasants can be 5 types, you can tell by the way they dress (these are my labels not in game labels):
  1. Beggar -- Rags -- major Debuffs never recruit
  2. Villager -- simple plain clothing -- cannon foddemeat shields 0-2 skills over 4
  3. Working class -- Nice dress or white shirt with a blue sash --
  4. Noble -- fine clothing with gold trim
  5. Apprentice -- Job specific clothing -- special skills but random buffs/debuff. Recruit and expel them to get a good set of perks. *
Storage
Everyone manages storage differently, figure out what works for you. I place them in a semi circle in the center of my base and build my production structures around the outside of them in another circle. I like to compartmentalize things with a stockpile/barn for each: * Seeds, Ore, Wood/logs, Books, Raw food, cooked food, Herbs/plants, Materials, Equipment (weapons on weapon racks (3)).
Production
Produce what you need without a ton of extra. Don't try to overproduce/stockpile resources early game, storage is too limited, resources are too limited and prioritization doesn't work. Each peasant should have 3 jobs + delivery/labor (2-6) save P1 for being able to redirect the peasant set all other jobs to 9 so they do not become idle. If a peasant wanders off on a task you don't want them to do, make them a companion and release them; when they start back to work it resets their job priority. It's an easy way to get a wandering peasant back on track. * top up/ one-off Top up your tools (2 ea)/ammo, keep plenty of extra arrows on hand. Keep 25% of your population's shields on top-up. Plank shields break fast! Armor and weapons should have 1 spare on top-up everything else as one-off.
Outpost
You don't need them yet, but when you do: 2 people, stockpile, house, work building. Set up deliveries. Delivery happens nightly at midnight or weekly. The one off transfer doesn't really work as intended, it will keep trying to send that amount daily forever. There is no option for broken tools in deliveries. If your outpost uses a tool, set up a weekly transfer of good tools and go pickup the broken ones. Make sure your travel sign is as close as possible to the stockpile of an outpost to ensure speedy transfer of goods.
Personal outpost
Create a personal outpost that consists of 2-3 crates, weapon rack, smoke rack, cauldron inside your main base. Peasants won't touch it (unless your main storage overflows). I have an Ammo/weapon crate, Good Food, Books (if I have more then 2 for books I create a stockpile). You can also use this as a transfer point for remote farming. By remote farming I mean things like Peat, iron, moss, wood,
Gear
Gear (armoweapons) has very small increments of improvements. Trying to gear all your peasants with the tech you just researched will create a ton of waste. Since the tech tree is blocked and you have to research each step, get the first step produced (with 1-2 extra sets) and get to the last step for the tech level. Upgrade everyone's gear and throw the old gear in a box and eventually the outhouse.
Weapons: * Reinforced club until I unlock warhammer. Everyone uses blunt weapons since they work way better vs brigands Bows -- Everyone gets a bow/arrows forever Gloves -- hand wraps until thick gloves Boots -- Rugged boots (needed for quests later) until nomad boots Pants -- Rugged (need for quests) until Thick Breeches Shirt -- Adventurers Garb until Gambeson Cap -- Nothing until outriders helmet (see section on recruitment) *
Peasants Work!
A core tenant is that day time is for production and Quests. Night time is for work and grinding.* Peasants stop work at 9pm and don't start until 6 am the next day. At the end of each day I call in all the peasants and go farm something (reeds, herbs, wood/logs). Seed bags/logs slings for everyone. I keep these and spare axes in my equipment box for easy swap. You don't need to sleep until 6:45 am to get your daily buff so use every minute of the day. After the farming is done I go farm an encampment or a wolf pack.
wolf pack note: at different locations around the map ( SW padstow, east of Haerndean, west/SW of bradford lake, Waterfall near Bradford, +more ) large wolf packs of 10-15 wolves spawn, when I find a spawn I place a travel sign as close as possible and check back each season. these are great sources of hides/furs/XP
Skills
Combat is where you break the barrier of production in the game. Focus your skills on bow first then shield/hammer. The rest of your skills will come from books/time. Priorities and optimize your skill growth with strength books/bow. To do this you need buff; Blackridgepool, Crasmere, fishermen, and the roadside tavern near padstow lake all sell cloud berry's for a 50% XP buff. Fishermen sell fish stew, and cranberries are picked at the swamp (where you should have a travel sign for this purpose).
You can max archery/agility in 50 days if you do this. Before you raid an encampment when you are grinding, shoot the corpse of animals/brigands as many times as you can before it decays. You still gain XP even after the animal is dead. You can put 90 arrows in a boaelk before it decays. because I go through so many arrows I keep a crate of just arrows always full then move it to my personal crate.
Strength, one handed and shields are slower since you don't get as many shots in but you can train them faster by blocking with your weapon, learn to time your attack against your opponents attack. All the AI telegraph where their attack is coming from and you swing against it, this gets you strength and shield XP as well as gives you a counter attack. Once you get the timing down it really simplifies the game.
Spend your apprentice books like an onlyfans simp. At one point I had 5-20 of each skill book because I couldn't spend them fast enough. I start each morning after sleep spamming books on every peasant. Strength books are the most valuable to me and two handed books are never used until late T2.
Combat
I saw a post here when I first started that said to buy straps at every opportunity and to save your gold for them. This was a complete waste for me. I have a stockpile full of just straps and I never purchased a single one. The key to this is the nightly attacks against brigand outposts.
The combat AI is not the best, one trick is to find a rock/ledge the AI cannot walk onto and stand there and shoot them in the head. If you kill all Melee AI the archers will run and start doing this strange dance of sprinting really far away then suddenly retargeting you from a huge distance away (outside render range). With these encampments you can't be too close to the encampment when you kill the last occupant or you will lose the encampment, you also have to be careful when traveling to Farnworth with your army that they don't accidently raid out the yellow encampment.
Southwest of Bradford is my favorite farm spot’s. There is a yellow base and a red base that are easy to farm. The yellow base is right next to a small canyon of rocks. Stand at the Y in the road, fire an arrow high (top of the smoke stack) and wait for them to aggro, once they aggro shoot them as you walk backwards to the rock edge, 2 quick jumps and you are untouchable. This base doesn't have archers and is also extremely high traffic for patrols. You can grind to level 7 bow/agility in about 10 days here.
Due south of Bradford is a red base with a bridge over the water, at the top of the hill on the west side is a rock that is the perfect size to stand on and not get hit. This base does have archers so be careful and use the tree for cover. Try to shoot the archers on the bridge as they rush.
Last place is the wheat farm south of Padstow. This is a little later than the other 2 but is doable very early game if you avoid the archers. The archers here can one shot you so place a travel sign extremely close. My spot is North east of the farm. Running north east from the farm towards the mud pit you keep going until you are close to the road, you will see a single rock outlier that you can stand on and shoot them easily. This is also a way to farm leatherawhide before you unlock the tanner.
Last spot in the bridge between Blackridge pool and the starter area. This area is patrol heavy with Mid level and high tier brigands, there are lots of edge's on the east side of the bridge where you are unreachable. The downside is that most of the archers here can one-shot you so 3-4 travel signs are prudent.
Raids
Honestly, I turned them off after T2 started. Before that they were set to hard/frequent. there are so many raiding party's, reclamation party's, tax party's and the infinite respawn brigands at Farnworth they were nothing more than an annoyance and distraction.
Libertas
I was able to liberate Haerndean around day 15, this was way too soon and I went back to an older save. Before you liberate your first town you want to reach friendship level with all 4 starting towns and be able to build village shrines(T2). In this whole guide I've not mentioned old coins/wolf teeth because I only use them to get to friendship level with a town. Once I hit friendship level I spam shrines at the town to get to protector. Once I reach protector I place a stockpile (in its own outpost) and transfer all goods to build a bell tower and extra food. Place the bell tower, kill the brigands and wait out the raiding/reclaim parties. There are only 2 paths from the brigand headquarters up the map. Place travel signs along the way near 'safe' rocks and spawn along their path to thin out the party. While you are engaged in guerilla warfare, have your army march in two groups (archers/shields) to the town to defend.
That's about all I have.

2024.05.20 03:21 ZhuGeTao Looking for some more advice on units

A/C: Goodman, 14.3 SEER2, 3.5 ton, single stage.
Furnace: Goodman, Single-stage multi speed ECM gas 96%, 80k btu
Water Heater: Bradford White 50 gallon powervent
Cost: $14,968
A/C: Amana, S-series variable speed compressor with inverter. Up to 17 SEER2, 3.0 ton.
Furnace: Amana, AMVC96 two stage variable speed gas, 80k btu.
Water Heater: Bradford white 50 gallon powervent
Cost: $17,619
Worth the extra cost for the S-series inverter a/c and two stage furnace? Price reasonable?

2024.05.20 02:07 SanderSo47 Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)

Directors at the Box Office: Clint Eastwood (Part 2)
https://preview.redd.it/va70nf0l3h1d1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=021d936ee0a724ca428d8559f5823592404d1822

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The first part was posted yesterday.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)¨

"Beyond his silence, there is a past. Beyond her dreams, there is a feeling. Beyond hope, there is a memory. Beyond their journey, there is a love."
His 25th film. Based on stories from the 2000 collection Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by F.X. Toole, it stars Eastwood, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman. The film follows Margaret "Maggie" Fitzgerald, an underdog amateur boxer who is helped by an underappreciated boxing trainer to achieve her dream of becoming a professional.
Paul Haggis wrote the script on spec, and it took four years to sell it. The film was stuck in development hell for years before it was shot. Several studios rejected the project even when Eastwood signed on as actor and director. Even Warner Bros., Eastwood's longtime home base, would not agree to a $30 million budget. Eastwood persuaded Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg to put up half the budget (as well as handle foreign distribution), with Warner Bros. contributing the rest.
The film had an incredible run in limited release, breaking many records for Eastwood's career. It eventually earned a fantastic $216 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film ever. It received critical acclaim, and it was named as one of his greatest films. It won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Freeman). Eastwood became one of the very few directors to make two films to win both Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $100,492,203. ($166.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $216,763,646.

Flags of Our Fathers (2006)

"A single shot can end the war."
His 26th film. Based on the book written by James Bradley and Ron Powers, it stars Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, John Benjamin Hickey, John Slattery, Paul Walker, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, Robert Patrick and Neal McDonough. The film follows the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima, the five Marines and one Navy corpsman who were involved in raising the flag on Iwo Jima, and the after effects of that event on their lives.
The film received positive reviews, but it bombed at the box office with just $65 million against its huge $90 million budget.
  • Budget: $90,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $33,602,376. ($52.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $65,900,249.

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)

"The completion of the Iwo Jima saga."
His 27th film. Based on Picture Letters from Commander in Chief by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, it stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya, Tsuyoshi Ihara, Ryō Kase and Shidō Nakamura. It's a companion film to Flags of Our Fathers, and portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers.
In the process of reading about the Japanese perspective of the war for Flags of Our Fathers, in particular General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Eastwood decided to film a companion piece with this film, which was shot entirely in Japanese. The film was shot back-to-back, starting filming just one month after Flags of Our Fathers wrapped filming.
Despite being seen as the least accessible of both films, this film was much more successful at the box office than the previous film (including a colossal $42 million in Japan alone). It also received critical acclaim, particularly for how it handed the depiction of good and evil from both sides. It received 4 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
  • Budget: $19,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,756,082. ($21.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $68,673,228.

Changeling (2008)

"To find her son, she did what no one else dared."
His 28th film. It stars Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich, and is based on real-life events, specifically the 1928 Wineville Chicken Coop murders in Mira Loma, California. It follows a woman united with a boy who she realizes is not her missing son. When she tries to demonstrate that to the police and city authorities, she is vilified as delusional, labeled as an unfit mother and confined to a psychiatric ward.
The film earned $113 million worldwide, barely breaking even at the box office. The film received mixed reviews, but Jolie received praise for her performance. She was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actress.
  • Budget: $55,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $35,739,802. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $113,398,237.

Gran Torino (2008)

"Ever come across somebody you shouldn't have messed with?"
His 29th film. It stars Eastwood, and follows Walt Kowalski, a recently widowed Korean War veteran alienated from his family and angry at the world, whose young neighbor, Thao Vang Lor, is pressured by his cousin into stealing Walt's prized Ford Torino for his initiation into a gang. Walt thwarts the theft and subsequently develops a relationship with the boy and his family.
The film received great reviews, as well as praise from the Hmong community. It ended up becoming a sleeper hit, and it earned $270 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $148,095,302. ($215.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $269,958,228.

Invictus (2009)

"His people needed a leader. He gave them a champion."
His 30th film. It stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon. Following the aftermath of the apartheid, President Nelson Mandela decides to unite his people by supporting a rugby team in their bid to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The film earned $122 million worldwide, barely breaking even. It received positive reviews, and Freeman and Damon received Oscar nominations for their performances.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,491,364. ($54.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $122,426,792.

Hereafter (2010)

"Touched by death. Changed by life."
His 31st film. It stars Matt Damon, Cécile de France, Bryce Dallas Howard, Lyndsey Marshal, Jay Mohr and Thierry Neuvic. An American with a special connection to the afterlife, a woman with a near-death experience and a young English boy, who lost his loved ones, cross paths in an effort to find closure in their lives.
Despite mixed reviews, it managed to earn $107 million, turning a small profit.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $32,746,941. ($47 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $106,956,330.

J. Edgar (2011)

"The most powerful man in the world."
His 32nd film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, and Judi Dench, and follows the career of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover, focusing on Hoover's life from the 1919 Palmer Raids onward.
The film received mixed reviews; while DiCaprio received praise, the technical aspects of the film were criticized. It earned $84 million, making it a box office success, but far below what DiCaprio usually makes at the box office.
  • Budget: $35,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $37,306,030. ($52 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $84,920,539.

Jersey Boys (2014)

"Everybody remembers it how they need to."
His 33rd film. Base on the 2004 jukebox musical, it stars John Lloyd Young, Erich Bergen, Michael Lomenda, Vincent Piazza and Christopher Walken, and tells the story of the musical group The Four Seasons.
It received mixed reviews, with praise for the musical numbers but criticism for the narrative and runtime, and failed at the box office.
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,047,013. ($62.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $67,647,013.

American Sniper (2014)

"The most lethal sniper in U.S. history."
His 34th film. It is based on the memoir by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice, and stars Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. While Kyle was celebrated for his military successes, his tours of duty took a heavy toll on his personal and family life.
In 2012, Cooper and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the memoir. Cooper wanted Chris Pratt to star as Kyle, but WB told him they would only greenlight the film if he stars in it. After Kyle's murder in 2013, Steven Spielberg signed to direct. Spielberg had read Kyle's book, though he desired to have a more psychological conflict present in the screenplay so an "enemy sniper" character could serve as the insurgent sharpshooter who was trying to track down and kill Kyle. Spielberg's ideas contributed to the development of a lengthy screenplay approaching 160 pages. Due to Warner Bros.' budget constraints, Spielberg felt he could not bring his vision of the story to the screen. So Eastwood was brought in to direct.
The film attained a solid, but not extraordinary response from critics. It also attracted some controversy over its portrayal of both the Iraq War and Kyle himself.
The box office though?
To say that the film had a fantastic run would be selling it short.
It opened on Christmas Day in 4 theaters, and it earned a huge $633,456 ($158,364 PTA). But the following weekend, it actually increased despite playing at the same amount of theaters, adding $676,909. That translated to a $169,227 PTA, becoming the highest second weekend PTA in history for a live-action film. And on its third weekend, it earned $579,518 ($144,879 PTA), becoming the first film to have three weekends above $100,000 PTA. In the 22 days it played in just 4 theaters, it earned $3,424,778.
On its first wide weekend, the film shook the industry by opening with a colossal $89 million. That was almost as much as the other 2014 blockbusters, and given that the film didn't have 3D pricing, it's very likely it sold far more tickets than them. It broke the January opening weekend record by twice as much, and the second biggest for an R-rated title. With insane word of mouth ("A+" on CinemaScore), this film had the legs. In less than one week, it became Eastwood's highest grossing film domestically. On its second weekend, it dropped just 28% and made $64 million, which was the biggest second weekend for an R-rated film (a record it still maintains) and crossed $200 million domestically. And by March, the film overtook The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 ($334 million) as the highest grossing 2014 film in North America.
After an insane run in theaters, it closed with a gigantic $350 million domestically, which made it the second highest grossing R-rated film in North America. Overseas, it was also very strong, and it made a huge $547 million worldwide. It was easily Eastwood's highest grossing film, even adjusted for inflation. One of the greatest box office runs in recent memory. It received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actor for Cooper, ultimately winning one for Best Sound Editing.
The biggest surprise of the 2010s? Perhaps. Cause let's face it, when 2014, did any of you had this as the top film of the year? Or even in the Top 20? Please.
  • Budget: $59,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $350,159,020. ($463.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $547,659,020.

Sully (2016)

"The untold story behind the miracle on the Hudson."
His 35th film. Based on the autobiography Highest Duty by Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles, it stars Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Autumn Reeser, Holt McCallany, and Jamey Sheridan. The film follows Sullenberger's 2009 emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River, in which all 155 passengers and crew survived and the subsequent publicity and investigation.
The film received strong reviews, and earned over $240 million worldwide, becoming one of his highest grossing films.
  • Budget: $60,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $125,070,033. ($163.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $243,870,033.

The 15:17 to Paris (2018)

"The real heroes."
His 36th film. Based on the autobiography by Jeffrey E. Stern, Spencer Stone, Anthony Sadler, and Alek Skarlatos, it stars Stone, Sadler, and Skarlatos as themselves and follows the trio through life leading up to and including their stopping of the 2015 Thalys train attack.
Despite choosing Kyle Gallner, Jeremie Harris and Alexander Ludwig as the leads, Eastwood decided to cast the heroes to play themselves, which was met with confusion as they lacked acting experience. And that was reflected on the final film; it received negative reviews for its acting, and it bombed at the box office.
  • Budget: $30,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $36,276,286. ($45.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $57,176,286.

The Mule (2018)

"Nobody runs forever."
His 37th film. Based on the 2014 The New York Times article The Sinaloa Cartel's 90-Year-Old Drug Mule by Sam Dolnick, it stars Eastwood, Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest, and Andy García. Due to financial issues, horticulturist Earl Stone becomes a courier for a drug cartel. Slowly, he grows closer to his estranged family, but his illegal activities threaten much more than his life.
It received good reviews (although some questioned its story and tone), and earned over $173 million worldwide.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $103,804,407. ($129.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $174,804,407.

Richard Jewell (2019)

"The world will know his name and the truth."
His 38th film. The film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde. The film depicts the July 27 Centennial Olympic Park bombing and its aftermath, as security guard Richard Jewell finds a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and alerts authorities to evacuate, only to later be wrongly accused of having placed the device himself.
The film received positive reviews, but several journalists criticized the critical portrayal of the reporter that first accused Jewell: Kathy Scruggs (specifically for trading sex for stories). The film marked another commercial failure for Eastwood.
  • Budget: $45,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $22,345,542. ($27.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $44,645,542.

Cry Macho (2021)

"A story of being lost and found."
His 39th film. Based on the novel by N. Richard Nash, it stars Eastwood and Dwight Yoakam. Set in 1979, it follows a former rodeo star hired to reunite a young boy in Mexico with his father in the United States.
Nash tried to get this film made all the way since 1970s, but no studio was willing to pick it up. He restructured his films as a novel, was successful and studios were now interested. There were a few candidates for the leading role; Robert Mitchum, Roy Scheider, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eastwood himself. Arnie was willing to star in the film back in 2003, but put it on hold when he was elected Governor. He was set to star after leaving office, but the project was scrapped after his affair scandal was made known. In 2020, Eastwood signed to return.
The film received mixed reviews, particularly for its writing and acting. It was also a huge flop at the box office, and marked Eastwood's least attended film as leading man. David Zaslav criticized the studio's decision to finance the film. Warner executives allegedly said that although they knew the film was unlikely to turn a profit, they felt indebted to Eastwood for his decades-long relationship with the studio and his consistent ability to deliver films under budget and on time.
  • Budget: $33,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $10,310,734. ($11.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $16,510,734.

The Future

He recently wrapped post-production on his 40th film, Juror No. 2. It stars Nicholas Hoult, Toni Collette, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Bibb, Chris Messina, J. K. Simmons and Kiefer Sutherland, and follows a juror serving on a murder trial who realizes he may be at fault for the victim's death.

The Verdict

Insanely profitable.
Even the bombs do not taint this kind of reputation. Eastwood has made all these films under budget and never past its deadline. That's something that has to be treasured for studios, no wonder he's been staying with Warner Bros. since 1976. His ability to get films ready in short notice is impressive; Richard Jewell started filming in June and it was on theaters in December. One of the most impressive actors who transitioned into directors. You can tell that Sergio Leone and Don Siegel taught him well.
Now of course, his method of directing can also have its setbacks: he's often known for not asking for multiple takes and he skips rehearsals. So that means the performances of his actors aren't always the best they could've done. Which is why, despite making some masterpieces or fantastic films, he's also made a few films with weak technical aspects: poor lighting (J. Edgar), questionable logic (Cry Macho), obvious props (the fake baby in American Sniper), and some bad acting (Gran Torino and The 15:17 to Paris). At the same time, it's clear he can also get extraordinary performances through these methods; Gene Hackman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman won Oscars for starring in his films.
He also proved old age doesn't prevent you from continuing to work. He's turning 94 in a few weeks, and he's still directing films. Manoel de Oliveira directed films until he was 104, so perhaps we still have a few more years with Eastwood behind the camera.
P.S. Ever since I started this series, there's been suggestions that I should do "Actors at the Box Office" multiple times. While the idea is intriguing, that doesn't seem feasible for me. I'd have to categorize whether the actor is leading, supporting, original IP, adaptation, remakes, etc. Besides, with the continuing decline of star power, it's tough to decide what actor is truly moving the needle at the box office. That's why I'm making solely "Directors at the Box Office", because the director is responsible for the production. If the film succeeds, the director will get credit. And if the film flops, the director will be blamed. So this is the closest you'll get to "Actors at the Box Office".
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Robert Zemeckis. One of the biggest falls from grace.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. It had to be a controversial filmmaker. Well, we'll later talk about... Zack Snyder. Oh, BoxOffice chose fuego 🔥
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
Who should be next after Snyder? That's up to you.

2024.05.19 23:29 One-Effect-1066 do I need a new hot water heater?

do I need a new hot water heater?
there’s about an inch of water in the drainage pan and lots of rust around bottom. We’ve had no problems and still have hot water but I’m concerned about the rust. We’ve had water in the pan before but it evaporated quickly and this seems to be much more. Our house is about 16 yrs old and it’s the original heater. Also if it needs to be replaced, I’m looking for an honest opinion regarding on demand tankless heater versus the standard tank.

2024.05.19 23:10 zmold Water Heater Replacement

I need to replace my 22 year old water heater, which died recently. My current water heater is a power vent (PV). I was quoted a price by Enercare ($2400 CAD) to buy one outright. However, they do not give you an actual quote and list off 4 PV models you could get (Rheem, Giant, Bradford White, and GSW). I also got quotes from a few local companies, but the price was about $600 more expensive for the next cheapest quote. The $3000 CAD quote was for a John Wood model, but it is power direct vent (PDV) . From what I've researched, the PDVs are needed when the water heater will be in a tight space without a lot of surrounding air (like a closet), so it uses a dual vent system to pull new air in from outside for combustion and a second vent for exhaust. My current water heater is in a room with a gas furnace and the space is about 10ft x 8ft. As much as I do not want to give Enercare my business, I wonder if I actually do need the PDV, or if the local sales guys are just trying to push it.
Do I need a PDV water heater? Are they more efficient than PV water heaters?
Is John Wood much better than the other brands listed?
