2024.05.19 20:44 Constant-Yapper1002 Ethics of an Activity

Another specific situational question for pre-med reddit: I volunteer tutored a student who LOVED to talk to me about pop culture. To preface, her mother wanted to send me something for my birthday as a thank you prior to this but I politely declined. For her 10th birthday though I asked her mother whether I can send a very small gift as I was graduating this semester and would no longer be able to tutor her after doing so for a while (an inexpensive butterfly bracelet symbolic of her and I loving Olivia Rodrigo lol). I don't think there is anything wrong in having sent her a gift but could this be viewed negatively in any way? Should I omit this in my description of a personal anecdote of my experience with her? I thought it would be heartwarming and cute story to describe the closeness of tutoring my student, but I want to ensure whether it is appropriate.

FAQ

I live in Cuba/Canada/Haiti/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!
Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.
Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?
Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.
Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?
Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).
Can I donate all my money to you?
No
Can you help me promote my game?
Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.
Your list is full of errors and now the great old ones have awaken!
Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on faith, trust and pixie dust, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

2024.05.19 14:20 Extension_Breath1407 The Owl House Fanchild: Evie Blight

The Owl House Fanchild: Evie Blight
https://preview.redd.it/9bfsdkrscd1d1.png?width=3901&format=png&auto=webp&s=791b6f10f6d33c7c491ca77d019c8fdbef0a27b5
Evie Blight, Emira and Viney's daughter as well as Azura and Manuel's second cousin. (And by second cousin, I mean they have more than one cousin, not that Evie is separated by two generations away from them.)
So Evie is named after the initials of her mothers being put together E+V.
So did you know Emira is played by the same voice actress who also did Loona from Helluva Boss? That is what inspired me in drawing her design. She has some dark green hair with brown streaks in them. She wears a vest and skirt colored like Emira while having an undershirt and boots like Viney.
She likes putting on a real cool girl vibe, acting like nothing fazes her and has a sharp remark for any situation. However, as the eldest of the children in the Noceda-Blight family she takes it upon herself to act as a source of comfort and support like her mother Emira has been. She acts as a voice of reason for when the children show their worst flaws such as Azura's Perfectionism, Calla's competitive spirit, and Manuel's excessive imagination.
She takes great pride as a Fashionista, trying to keep up with the latest trends on Penstagram.
So her magic is Illusion and Healing like Emira. I wish I could put Beastkeeping as well but I don't see her pursuing taking care of animals as a career. Although she does pitch in to help in her mom's Veterinary Clinic when she has the time. As much as she tries to hide it, she does indeed have a weakness for cute fluffy animals. Though for her mother's sake, she begrudgingly tolerates the more grosser creatures like spiders and worms.
I chose Illusion and Healing because she could serve as a tutor for both Azura and Manuel regarding those fields of magic they specialize in. Also she is not really into fighting, preferring to sneak by and trick people through the use of Illusions. Healing because she wants to fix up the people she cares about as well as herself.
Her Palisman is also a Wolf pup, another nod to the whole Loona Allusion I have going on. I thought it would be a nice reflection of Ghost, a Dark Gray Wolf to a pure white cat.
So what do you guys think?

2024.05.19 14:03 GMX06 A rant on a confusing crush.

A bit of an update on my last post. https://www.reddit.com/teenagers/s/ATjE93OSCb
I guess I am making this to rant. Life has been quite hard recently, and I don’t have much time to write. I have been thinking about the way I feel about her, and I feel like I can split it into four categories that interact with each other in strange ways.
Romantic attraction (?) To put it bluntly, I like her. But this attraction does not feel like what it should be. No “butterflies in the stomach”. But I notice her. No nervousness. No stumbling over words. I am not shy; on the contrary, I feel as stable talking to her as I am with any other classmate, provided that we are talking about something academic. But she’s cute. I can’t help but glance every once in a while. I don’t know her very well, despite knowing her for two and a half years. Despite this, I can’t avoid the urge to care about her. It is hard to explain much more without putting it in some more context.
Accomplishment Envy This is, unfortunately, a fairly overpowering theme. I am not a particularly driven person. Even though I know I am not very accomplished, I lack the motivation to push myself to do things. This has become a large problem in my relations with parents, especially with college applications peeking around the corner. My parents worry, especially my dad. He might ask me something like “[Name of acquaintance] just won this award. [Name of acquaintance] just got a high ranking in this competition. [Name of acquaintance] is starting a tutoring service, and she even got grants. How about you? What’s your plan?” He would say how tired he is of pushing me to do things, begging me to wake up to the fact that I don’t have much time left, pleading for me to spend more time on academics, on volunteering, on developing myself so that I don’t look like a fool on my college apps.
So where does she fit into all of this? She is an unavoidable example of what I am not. The contrast is stark. She has a great degree of self-control, self-fulfillment, and identity. She does good things, and is surrounded by friends who care about her. She is her own person, with her own drives and purposes, her own established and developing skillset. I don’t know what kind of background she is from, or what her past is like, but I feel that she will rise above the negatives, utilize the positives to the fullest, and become valuable to herself and people around her. I am a puppet of my parents, and I am starting to fail even there. Yes, I have been pushed into experiences, and yes, I have gained my own skills through those experiences. Yes, I have good intuition when playing games and thinking through the things I am good at, and yes, I like being helpful, especially when explaining things to my peers. I am known to be a good strategist, with good intuition and a willingness to help newcomers, in the gaming group I am in. But as my dad has drilled into me, week after week, month after month: Why can’t I do something productive? What is my plan? Seriously, what will I do with my life?
I understand, there are plenty of other driven people around me. I am aware that I have sampling bias, growing up with immigrant parents who value education and have experienced the effects first-hand, surrounded by people selected with established friend groups who push each other to do better. But the difference here is that she is unavoidable. The same attraction that makes me want to care about her also makes me notice all the things she can do. Studying for something? Talking with friends? Meeting new people? Working on things? Discussing the things she wants to do? Even simple things like asking a question? These things come naturally to her, just as they do to everyone else, and I wish I could say the same myself.
And this is where things start getting complicated.
I understand that what I have been saying makes it sound like I hate the feeling of being envious of her. But for some reason, it isn’t all bad. I get a certain comfort in thinking about her, and this seems to conflate itself with my preexisting attraction. I don’t know if I adore her character traits but am influenced by my existing problems, or I envy her character traits but am influenced by attraction. Two emotions I associate with “positive” and “negative” seemingly feel similar. I don’t know if what I feel counts as romantic attraction anymore; maybe it is just a habit that I haven’t grown out of. And that’s not all.
Curiosity and urge for human connection. I am aware that I may be idealizing her. She is flawed like any of us, but I cannot list any flaws off the top of my head. In combination with social isolation and romantic interest (?), I find myself wanting to get to know her better. I already know that she will never be interested in me in the way I am to her, but I want to learn how it feels to have someone actively approach me in conversation and talk about things.
The only times I have talked to her outside of an academic setting are in very rare cases, in the context of mental health and emotions — she feels like someone I can trust. But these are isolated incidents, and I know that she’s not responsible for me, that she has her own things to deal with. What’s stopping me from just… talking to her more? Talking about other subjects? Lack of motivation plays a big role, yes, but my primary issue is fearing how she thinks of me.
Fear of creepiness. I don’t know where this stems from. Perhaps I internalized something from childhood. Perhaps it is my lack of positive self-image, or a misunderstanding of my place among everyone else, or some combination of these, or something else. But I am averse to approaching girls in non-academic settings, fearing that I make them uncomfortable.
This ties many things together. It goes without saying that this stops me from talking to her as much as I would otherwise, but it is also why I try to suppress many of the other things I feel. I would not tell her most of what I say here, since I know that it would make her either avoid me or feel obligated to talk to me. I feel guilty for caring about her as much as I want to; she doesn’t need my attention, but I still find myself asking her if she’s alright when she seems tired.
I guess I’ll stop here for now, though I’m sure I am missing some nuances that I will remember later. In summary: I think I like her, in a way that I associate with romantic attraction. I also envy her — fuelled by my own probelms — in a strange way that mixes in with how I feel, creating a strange combination that makes me question whether or not I am actually feeling attraction. I seek to know her better, and feel that this might be possible; she is still willing to talk to me, albeit passively. Finally, I fear the way she may think of me.
This is more or less what I wanted to say. I posted this to rant, but I guess any help, information, or people who relate would be appreciated.

2024.05.19 10:36 Visual-Ostrich-4108 Time to finish this off with Télios Kayuri, finally done with ideas.

Télios was born a fetus. It was a miracle he even survived for such a short while. His father, from desperation and curiosity, placed him into a vat of Substance 7(Image1). There he was incubated for 9 years.
During those 9 years, the scientists there taught him the basics. Talking, writing, reading, but more importantly, how to use his gift. Complete control over his body. Every inch of flesh, membrane, and bone could mover however he wished. Morgan laid his eyes on his son, but something else greater. The perfect human, and thus spawned the name Télios. Greek for Perfection.
It allowed him to morph himself into any person, animal, or into a grotesque creature. However, he found much more use in tendrils he tipped off with bone. A few weeks after he turned 9, Morgan finally let him out of the tube.
Télios didn't want any of them to see his true form, piecing himself a body from everyone around him(image 2&3). Although he looked human, the result was... Uncanny... Hours passed until Télios finally learned to walk. He entered his father's car and went home.
Télios met Felicia and realized his appearance didn't match hers. Thus he shortened his stature, ditched the beard, and added a slight more innocent tone to his voice. The two got along great, their bond growing stronger with each passing day.
Télios quite enjoyed the violence when Morgan brought the two on opperations. The more Télios fought, the greater the ego he gained. Not only that, but the praise from his father and others pushed that arrogance farther.
During his 20's, Télios reverted to his older form (Image 2&3). And this is where a fial on Télios was cranked to 100. His "libido" drive. Thanks to his inflated ego, he believed that all, except family (obviously, ew), deserved his "gift".
Even despite Morgan's orders, Télios laid with many people, changing his form into any that was nescessary. Morgan, not wanting Télios to bear any horrific children, assembled a few agents to kill off any of his partners.
Télios couldn't care, they were one night stands anyway. And good riddance too, he was too high for child support. 20 more years of the cycle of killing, banging, and a dead partner continued for 10 years. Télios still looked the same as his 24 year old self.
However a one-time favor was asked of Télios. Morgan had to run some serious errands, and Felicia accidentally kidnapped a kid. The two going to find the parents, leaving the kid with Télios. In a short amount of time, Télios managed to traumatize the kid by explaining how a man and woman's body part work. As expected, Télios was never allowed to be near a child. Some more years pass as all was going well until...
One of these operations, they came across a man. One who bore a striking resemblance to Morgan. Than, with the 5 braincells Télios had, it clicked. This must've been an abandoned son. A fight insued in which Télios, even though he was perfect, was bested by a man in his late 30's?
Then a young boy ran out, stopping the fight. Why was this old man allowed to have a son but not him? He's perfect after all. But then Morgan fell over, clutching his chest. He muttered he was proud of them all, however when he said it. Not a glance was given to Télios...
But he's perfect? Why not look at him? It's because he's already perfect... Right? Now he laid dead. Only issue is... Where are they gonna live? Jack invited them inside, only for Télios to try to spread his seed and get him and Felicia kicked out. Eventually, Felicia found them a home, and Télios had an idea.
Now that his partners weren't being killed, that means he could father children. He could be a god to a whole new species, finally be praised for the perfection he is! Although Felix started the "hybrid" race with Jack, Télios kicked the population up sky-high. And he kept it up to his 40's.
Soon, he will be seen as perfection, by all. For he is Télios, the perfect human, a god among men. Unless one of those men are as skilled as Felix...
Also, if you noticed, I ended Felicia and Télios' stories at 40, Jack at 20. That's because canonically, they all go through wormholes and go to different universes, aka RP's, and continue their stories there. And now the possibilities are endless!

2024.05.19 06:38 selenophile_16 How to advertise tutoring services

Hi, I'm a high school student looking to start tutoring chemistry to other high schoolers next school year. I really like chemistry, and I'm pretty good at it. I was the top student in my AP Chemistry class this year, so I'm confident that I'm qualified to informally tutor others.
There are a lot (150+) students in my school that take AP Chemistry every year, and even more that take introductory chemistry, so I do not think there will be any shortage of potential students. My only issue is figuring out how to advertise.
Since I'm a high schooler, I don't really have a lot of money to pour into those expensive local advertisement websites (Yelp, Nextdoor, etc.). I know that there are a lot of AP Chemistry prep books at my local library. This probably sounds stupid, but would it be illegal to stick a tutoring flyer to one of those books?
I don't have a lot of underclassmen friends or acquaintances, so I can't really directly ask people if they want tutoring/ask them to tell their friends about me.
Any other ideas on how to advertise?

2024.05.18 20:59 ginger-neutral [MMMM4M] Your roommate is missing [changeling listener] [harpy speaker] [vampire speaker] [demigod speaker] [demon speaker] [plot]

Ok to monetize, but don't paywall. Links to the previous parts: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8.
[Jackdaw]
Here we are, pretty boy. G'night.

Aw, what kinda boyfriend would I be if I didn't walk you home after such a… hectic day for us? I need to make sure to get you back to your room safely. I'm sure your roommate would appreciate it, at least.

What do ya mean something's wrong? Like, between us?

I'm not being egotistical, pretty boy. I'm genuinely confused.

Now that you mention it, I do sense something… off.

Yeah, there's a lot of Void magic swirling in one of these dorms.

Oh shit. That's your dorm, right?

I'm not leaving you alone until we figure this out, a'ight?
[Listener unlocks and opens the door]
Gods above! What happened here? So much Void magic pouring into the room from somewhere.
[Demon]
(Faintly repeating in the background, barely audible until indicated otherwise)
Come to me, darling. I watch the dryad wilt. Withered leaves and broken branches. I watch him weep amber tears. I feel him quiver in fear. Try to find me in this abyssal darkness. Your dryad awaits a savior, and I await a martyr. Don't be late, and…
(Loop to the start of the line as much as is needed)
[Jackdaw]
Should I call my boys or do you want me to keep them out of this?

D'you got another plan?

A'ight. Call the vampire over. Vamps are good with understanding Void shit.

Hopefully he sees the text before too long. Once he does, he—
[Zooming noise]
[Dorian]
Alrighty, what's this about— oh.

Yeah, I noticed.

I sense five presences, including my own. Uh, two of them are obscured by all this Void elemental magic, but… I already have a guess as to who did this.

Yeah, I think it's whoever it was that lurked in the library. They're definitely nearby, but the Void magic is messing with the dimensions of the room.
[Jackdaw]
What. How?!
[Dorian]
Only a god or a demon could do this. We're probably up against the latter. Terra Nova Academy doesn't have any godly students or faculty. Demigods, yes, but none who have such powerful Void elemental magic. This feels like… maybe a Possessor Demon? No, those aren't allowed in Terra Nova, as they have to commit atrocities to keep their power.

Hey, uh, tengu boy?
[Jackdaw]
That's Jackdaw to you.
[Dorian]
Sorry, I'm not good with names. Didn't mean to offend.
[Jackdaw]
It's fine. What do you need?
[Dorian]
I need you to create a burst of plasma. The way the electricity disperses could help me understand what exactly we're dealing with. Storm elemental races can cast more visible electricity.
[Jackdaw]
A'ight, gimme a sec to remember the glyph for it.
[Electricity crackles and then fades. The demon's voice becomes a bit louder and more clear]
[Dorian]
Oh my gosh! It's a memory demon! We can't fight them without… I don't even know.
[The demon's voice becomes louder again, with echoes that distort and warp themselves]
[Jackdaw]
Hey, I gotcha. You okay, pretty boy?

You almost fainted, babe. You're lucky to have a strong boyfriend like me to catch you.
[Dorian]
Hey, do you feel that, um, Jack?
[Jackdaw]
It's Jackdaw. Never just Jack. Hell, Tengu boy was better.
[Dorian]
There's a faint stream of Life magic. I can't track it well enough, but you might?
[Jackdaw]
Nah, I couldn't even track Storm magic. Pretty boy? D'you think you—
[Dorian]
Don't. Please.
[Jackdaw]
Why the hell not?! He's strong. I believe in him.
[Dorian]
Because the demon wants him! This is a trap meant specifically for him. His best friend was kidnapped by a demon. A bit of Life magic is flowing through the Void spell, even though the demon is obviously strong enough to keep a dryad's power restrained.

No! That's a terrible idea! Making a deal with a demon is never a good idea! Even humans know that!
[Jackdaw]
I gotta agree, pretty boy. If that creep wants you, then you shouldn't get anywhere near them!
[Dorian]
I'm going to get help from Roland Apollyon. Tengu, watch him.
[Jackdaw]
Already on it.
[Zooming noise. The demon's voice gets louder again]
[Jackdaw]
Hey! Stay with me, pretty boy!
(About 10 to 15 seconds of similar ad-libbing as the demon gets louder and louder)
[Demon]
(Loud enough to drown out Jackdaw)
Now that I have your full attention, I can finally make my move. I have no interest in your roommate, my darling changeling. I took him to get your attention. You see, I find you so interesting.
[Jackdaw]
I swear, pretty boy, if you don't respond—
[Demon]
Ignore him.
[Jackdaw's audio goes silent. If there's any soundscaping or other ambient sound effects, those should go silent too]
Ignore everyone and everything else. Because I have something you don't want me to have. Your roommate. Chrysanthos Hazelwood. He will suffer every moment you waste.

Let's make this fun. For every minute you fail to reach me, I will consume a full month of his memories, starting with foundational ones before moving onto memories of you.
But if anyone besides you approaches me, I will consume every good memory he has in that pitiful little brain of his, leaving him with nothing but pain and grief and despair and rage. As fun as that would be to see, you're the one I really want.
Don't keep me waiting. Darling.
[Audio returns to normal]
[Roland]
— ahold of yourself, changeling.
[Jackdaw]
Oh thank the gods. He hears us again.
[Roland]
Then let us talk about the dryad who was captured by the memory demon. I have already prepared a method to retrieve him, but it will take some time. I assume that is acceptable, so I will begin to outline the process.
[Jackdaw]
Whoa, calm down, pretty boy.
[Roland]
That's quite the outburst. Why are you so opposed to hearing me out?
[Dorian]
(Defeated)
I get the feeling the demon told him not to.

No, I can't hear him. But I've seen people under the effects of Void magic before. I can only assume he used it to speak with you.

I thought so. He really does want you.
[Jackdaw]
Dammit…! How are we supposed to stop that prick if— Wait, hold on, pretty boy. You really shouldn't go in there. Demons are bad news.

He gave you a fucking time limit?! Fuck fuck fuck.
[Dorian]
(Taking a breath)
If you really insist on making a deal with this guy, then… then stall. Try to be entertaining. It'll probably hurt, but… it's your choice, ultimately.
And I'm only gonna say this once, so listen closely…
(Whispering)
You're one of my favorite people, so if you get killed, I'll drain your corpse myself. That's not a threat. It's a promise I make lovingly.
[Roland]
Be well, changeling.
[Jackdaw]
I'll be waiting for you, pretty boy. I won't interfere. I wish you'd let me, but…
(Sigh)
Just go.
[Demon]
Yes. Yes! Come to me, darling. Come save your invaluable friend.

2024.05.18 20:30 roseohseven Long first time trip report 5/13-5/18!

LOOOONG first time trip report! 5/13-5/18, stayed at Beach Club, visited all four parks, bought Genie+ every day, had the standard DDP. Family of 4, two girls 5 and 9. I learned so much from this group over the past year and especially loved trip reports, so hopefully this post will be helpful to someone!
💲BUDGET💲
-- I booked the trip a year out so I could break it up into 12 manageable payments. I opened the no fee Disney VISA, which gives you several months of no interest on charges made towards Disney travel packages, rewards dollars to use at Disney, and a couple other perks like character meet and greets and discounts.
-- I signed up for Disney Movie Insiders. This is what you're supposed to do with all those little codes that come in Disney DVDs/Blurays. You enter the codes in exchange for points, and at 1000 points, you can redeem for a $10 Disney gift card. You also get points for being subscribed to Disney+, seeing Disney movies in the theater, their social media accounts, and a whole bunch of other things. I got $50 in gift cards from this alone.
-- If you want Disney-themed luggage, try thinking outside the box to save money! I got plain luggage in Mickey colors--red and black--and Mickey luggage tags to make them Disney themed.
-- I tried to budget for souvenirs via gift cards... but I failed, lol. Everything is so expensive, $100 is gone in a second. Plushes are like $40, coffee cups are $20, etc. Whatever you're planning to spend, double it! I get what people say about most shops having the same stuff, but it's definitely not all of them, most of the ones post-ride have unique stuff. And honestly it's kind of nice most of them have the same stuff, if you want to get whatever your kid was asking for earlier, you don't have to walk all the way back to the one shop you saw it at.
-- We paid for Memory Maker and I'm on the fence about it. On the one hand, it's really nice to get all the ride photos and meet and greet photos and magic shots. It's also really nice for the whole family to be in a lot of pictures and not have to swap with the other adult or find someone willing to take your picture. On the other, we definitely didn't utilize it as much as I wanted to because a lot of the photographers had pretty long lines and I just didn't want to spend time waiting for a picture I could take myself. If we came across someone with a shortish or no line, we made sure to get it, but for anyone with a long line, we just stood around the same spot and took our own.
🗓️PLANNING🗓️
-- If you have kids and live within easy driving distance of another amusement park, highly recommend making a visit BEFORE going to Disney to get an idea of how they handle that kind of day/environment, especially if they have never been. I quickly discovered we would absolutely need a stroller and I would need to be militant with the kids about staying hydrated. Also to avoid face paint, as heat + tears + paint + eyes = bad day! I felt so much better making these discoveries beforehand and being able to prepare accordingly, rather than making them at Disney.
-- USE AN AGENT! An agent is free to you, so why not have the help? Ours was amazing, she gave us quotes, booked the package, rebooked as needed later when a better deal came out, made all the payments, dining and extra reservations, and was just all-around awesome to work with. It was such a load off to know I wasn't on my own with all this stuff.
-- Watch everything Ear Scouts. No one explains Genie+ better, and Rob and Erick's videos are just so positive and beautiful and well done.
-- I also enjoyed reading Disney Tourist Blog--lovingly snarky but super informative!--and Disney Food Blog for fun tips and news.
-- I didn't find any park to be a half day park, we filled our whole day in every one and still didn't see everything!
-- My kids did really well, whenever they were on the verge of cranky, we had one ride in the stroller for a while, bought a snack (usually ice cream or popcorn), and used the bubble wand, and/or gave them some ibuprofen, and everyone felt better pretty quick. We never tried to do fireworks, we were all done by 8 so always left after dinner. The only park we closed down was EPCOT because we didn't get out of dinner until after close, and that was a really cool experience, the park was so quiet and empty and beautiful!
-- You don't NEED a Magic Band... but man, was it convenient. We just had 1.0 Magic Bands though, we didn't bother with the 2.0s.
-- I guess moving through security fast is important to people rope dropping... but as someone who didn't, it added like maybe 30 seconds to a minute to the experience the couple times my bag got flagged, it's really not a big deal.
-- I'm not saying anyone's lying about bad experiences or exaggerating or anything, but try to remember that far more people go on the Internet to complain than they do to praise. I got so stressed about all the things that could go wrong, and we had a pretty much perfect trip. The only attraction that broke down on us was Muppetvision, of all things. The only "bad behavior" we witnessed was the morning we were leaving, we could hear a dad across the hall yelling at his family, I think they overslept and were going to miss their flight or something? We just turned the TV on so we didn't have to hear him. A couple times we forgot to take our stuff with us when we parked our stroller or forgot some food in it, and neither people nor animals bothered it. The only dicey thing that happened to us was me dropping my phone into the Dumbo moat, the cast members fished it out and it still worked, I sent them a cast compliment for all their help! All the cast members were great, I'm not really sure what people expect but IMO they all do amazing for having to be peppy and helpful all day in absolutely blazing heat, walking a ride conveyer belt nonstop, repeating the same spiels over and over, meeting person after person, etc. I wouldn't last a 2 hour shift let alone 8. Cast members, you rock!!!
✈️TRAVEL✈️
-- We flew Delta, flight there was flawless, flight home was delayed by an hour waiting for crew and was a little bumpy (which is not great for a nervous flyer like me) but otherwise fine.
-- Get TSA PreCheck! Good for a few years, if the adults have it the kids have it too. It made the whole experience so much easier. That said, even PreCheck still moves kind of slow at MCO, so definitely get there at least 2 hours early for your flight. Use curbside check-in for bags, way faster than the long line inside!
-- On our agent's recommendation, we used Away We Go for ground transport in Orlando. They communicate really well, both ways were flawless, no complaints!
-- We used Minnie Vans to get to Animal Kingdom + Sanaa and Magic Kingdom, what a wonderful service! Definitely pricey, but they had cartoons on in the car, booster seats they set up for you, and the drivers were so nice and friendly and had fun trivia to share. I never had any problem requesting one when I needed it.
⛱️BEACH CLUB⛱️
-- We knew we wanted an onsite hotel where you could walk to at least one park. This pretty much limits you to a handful of Deluxe hotels or the Swan and Dolphin. Beach Club won for us because it's "in the Disney bubble" and you can walk to 2/4 parks. Note that while you can technically walk to Hollywood Studios, it is a LOOOONG walk. The boat is a nice not crowded alternative! We did not make use of Early Entry or Extended Hours, we're just not built for either. Beach Club was lovely, we booked a resort view but I think we ended up with a water view, we were right by the quiet pool and could see the water beyond from our room. Stormalong Bay was a little crazy for us but we loved the quiet pool. Best thing about Beach Club though is the location, EPCOT is literally steps away!
🌳ANIMAL KINGDOM🌳
-- We had read that there's really no bad day to do AK, so we started there. We rode: Navi River Journey, Flight of Passage, Kali River Rapids, Everest, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Triceratops Spin, and Dinosaur--so pretty much everything! With Genie+ we walked onto all of them. We also met Moana, Pocahontas, and Russell! The only thing we didn't do here that we wanted to was the Gorilla Falls trail, but we just ran out of time before the park closed.
🌐EPCOT🌐
-- We had read to avoid EPCOT on Fridays and Saturdays, so we went on Wednesday. We rode: Grand Fiesta Tour, Living with the Land, Nemo, Spaceship Earth, Imagination with Figment, Frozen, Remy, Journey of Water, and Guardians--everything we wanted! Again, with Genie+, we walked right onto everything! Outside of our character meal (more on that in the dining section!), we also met Anna, Elsa, and Asha! Tried a couple of Flower and Garden snacks: chicken and waffles, fruit and cheese strudel, and potato pancakes, all were delicious! Everyone had a different favorite day, but EPCOT was personally my favorite day, it felt like we were firing on all cylinders and the day just went really smoothly!
🏰MAGIC KINGDOM🏰
-- We had read that Wednesdays were the quietest days at MK, so we were originally going to try to do it that day, but we could only get a reservation for Cinderella's Royal Table on Thursday, so we switched it up. Definitely the most crowded of all the parks we visited, but I think that's just the norm for MK, everyone wants to go to the castle park with the most rides. We rode: Regal Carousel, Tomorrowland Speedway, Barnstormer, Magic Carpets, Mad Tea Party, People Mover, Dumbo, Small World, Little Mermaid, Pirates, Space Ranger Spin, Jungle Cruise, TRON, and Peter Pan. Again, with Genie+, we walked right onto everything! The only ride we missed at this park that we wanted to do was Pooh, I couldn't manage to get a return time that was earlier than we planned on leaving. Outside of our character meals (more on those in the dining section!) we also met Mirabel, Tiana, and Rapunzel! We had both the Rapunzel and Aurora ice creams, both so good and cute!
🎬HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS🎬
-- We had read that, like MK, it's better to do HS later in the week, so we went Friday. We rode: Slinky, Alien Saucers, Toy Story Mania, Rise, Smuggler's Run, Runaway Railway. Again, with Genie+, we walked right onto everything! The only ride we missed was Tower of Terror, again I couldn't manage to get a return time that was earlier than we planned on leaving. We also met Olaf, be aware Olaf doesn't sign stuff, they just give you a signature card. This park needs more shade IMO, especially Toy Story Land, I know it's supposed to be Andy's backyard, but I don't see why that means we can't have some shade from trees or something. 🤪 Blue milk from Galaxy's Edge was really good, the family was all fighting over it!
🍽️DINING🍽️
-- We almost certainly lost some money on the DDP, but I'm still glad we got it because it allowed us to do more table service meals and have less stress overall about expenses. We easily used up everything but child quick service credits, we had a few of those left over near the end.
Here's where we ate!
BOARDWALK DELI/PIZZA WINDOW: Pizza for the kids, sandwiches for the adults. Tasty and satisfying after our day of travel!
BEACHES AND CREAM: Got the kitchen sink for the experience, but honestly it's not great, all the ice cream and toppings melt together quick and you just end up with weird ice cream soup.
SAT'ULI CANTEEN: LOVED this place, everything was so yummy! Best quick service we had!
SANAA: Since Animal Kingdom closes so early, we thought we'd try to extend the experience by eating at Sanaa. What a great idea, we got seated right by a window and saw so many animals! The food was great too.
AKERSHUS: Our favorite princess meal! We met Aurora, Tiana, Snow White, Ariel, and Belle. They were all lovely, and the breakfast was really good too. Only 1 credit on the DDP!
GARDEN GRILL: Our kids really enjoyed getting to look down over Living with the Land and the fact that the restaurant spins. We met Farmer Mickey, Pluto, and Chip and Dale. They were fun and even came to our table more than once. Food was good!
SPACE 220: Not on the DDP, but wow, what a cool restaurant! Almost like a ride with the theming and the elevator up. Food was really good.
CINDERELLA'S ROYAL TABLE: You gotta eat in the castle! We paid for it OOP because we didn't want to use up 2 DDP credits here. You're really going for the location and the princesses, the food is kinda meh, not bad but not as good as other places. The restaurant is small and they have to turn tables quick, so it's very understandable to me that the princesses have to move fast. It's not that they rush you, they'll take all the pictures you ask for and sign whatever and answer your questions, but if you don't have much you need, they try to keep moving. Akershus is much bigger so they are able to be more relaxed there. The only small bummer is that we didn't see Merida (maybe she was on vacation too!) We did meet Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, and Aurora though!
CRYSTAL PALACE: We are not big on buffets but we enjoyed meeting Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger!
TOPOLINO'S: Maybe the best food of the trip, steak and eggs were so good! The character artist costumes are so cute too. It was fun to have an excuse to ride the Skyliner to get here from Beach Club too.
DOCKING BAY 7: The theming is great, but the food wasn't as good as Satuli Canteen IMO.
THE MARKET AT ALE & COMPASS: We had quick service credits we wanted to use up on the last day and we didn't want to leave the resort again, otherwise I would have gone somewhere else, food was meh.
✨EXTRAS✨
-- I originally wanted to book Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique for my kids, but it's so expensive/competitive that I decided I didn't want the stress. Instead I booked Have Wand, Will Travel to come to our room and bought dresses from Presley Couture and Only Little Once. I chose Have Wand, Will Travel because they keep character throughout. Fairy Godmother Elyse was amazing and so much fun, my kids loved it and kept talking about it all day!
-- That same morning I ordered a Sammicakes breakfast box with beignets for us to eat. I also ordered a pretend letter from The DCP and Me on Etsy to make it seem like the breakfast came from Tiana. My kids also loved this and had fun telling Tiana about it both times we met her. Sammicakes was good but a LOT of food, sadly we didn't end up eating half of it. It can last you at least 3 days!
-- We had Birthdays and More decorate our door, it was a really fun surprise for the kids on our first day and made our room easy to find. The kids also loved reusing the decorations at home on their own doors!
-- Matching shirts and ear hats, all from Etsy! So many cool designs there, hardest part is choosing!
-- Got my kids a pin trading lanyard with some pins, they loooooved pin trading! It was like free souvenirs.
🧳PACKING🧳
-- Things the Internet Told Me to Pack That I Needed: Scissors, ziploc bags, ibuprofen (kids and adults), garbage bags, big carabiners to hook on the strolleuse to carry multiple bags at once.
-- Things the Internet Told Me to Pack that I Didn't Need: stainless steel straws (the paper straws are more like hard cardboard, they really don't break down unless your kid is gnawing on them or something), ponchos (it did rain some most days, but wearing a poncho was almost more miserable than not wearing one, it's so hot and humid to be walking around in a plastic bag! We did better taking shelter and using umbrellas.), wipes (obv you need them if your kid is younger, but mine were older and just never got messy enough to need them), glow sticks (we never stayed anywhere long enough to use them), bottled wateLiquid IV (the tap water tasted the same as home to us, but we live in a rural area so maybe we are just used to imperfect water?) Basically, the less you can get away carrying in the parks, the better. It's annoying to lug stuff around you don't end up needing or using!
🛞STROLLER🛞
-- I know it seems insane that your 5 year old and 9 year old will need a stroller, but mine definitely did. Once I accepted that I was going to have to get one, I tried to make the best of it, and actually got really into decorating it so we could always easily spot it in the sea (the decorations also later made nice wall decor for a gallery of our trip!) The Magic Spotter flag was the best investment, hardly anyone had them so it was easy to instantly spot our stroller anywhere we left it, even if it got moved. That said, I definitely didn't want to spend a lot on a stroller we were really only buying for this one trip, so I got a used Joovy Caboose on Facebook Marketplace for $50. It was very hard to handle with two older kids in it, and even with one it was hard to handle unless the kid was in the back seat. So we basically used it like a single stroller, glad I didn't spend a lot on it since it was so hard to drive!
☔WEATHER☔
-- We had mostly great weather, it rained some every day except Magic Kingdom day but it passed within an hour each time. We wore socks with Crocs so that if/when it rained, we could just take our wet socks off and walk in our Crocs, this worked great! Don't trust the weather reports though, two days it wasn't supposed to rain. One day it actually didn't, the other day it did and we had to walk in wet shoes because we didn't wear the Crocs that day. Just figure it might rain any day and be prepared! See above note RE: ponchos being not great and shelter + umbrellas being better. When it didn't rain, It. Was. Hot. 🥵 In the 90s but definitely felt hotter with the humidity making it so sticky. We felt there was plenty of shade at Animal Kingdom and EPCOT, but hardly any at Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, which I would say slightly affected how much fun we had on those days comparatively.
Phew! That's about it, let me know if you have any questions!

This is what I see whenever I try to access the templates page on Wyzant to make some tutoring templates to apply to jobs quickly. I have tried 3 different browsers. I have tried clearing cookies, cache, history etc... I have tried accessing it from a job application, a google link, and a direct browser link. I am unsure what else I can do to access the templates page.

2024.05.18 11:41 LawsickP Furina and the Prodigal Son: How Genshin Impact Led Me Back Home to the Catholic Church

Hello. I posted a meme in the Catholic Memes subreddit with a Genshin Impact meme template, and I felt moved when I shared a testimony, and it was taken well. So, I want to share a more in-depth story as someone who used to simply just be a lukewarm cultural Catholic, because having played Genshin Impact and meeting Furina moved me in a way no other fictional character ever had. It was a time when I started to notice God’s love more clearly. I did not expect to feel God’s love over a Chinese anime gacha game. I did not expect to be so moved to the point it served as a road for me to return to the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church that I drifted apart from for almost a decade.
I will only enter a Church if I am convinced with reason, and because I learned Catholic theology and am convinced by apologetics (by listening to and reading the works of different Catholic apologists, from Saint Thomas Aquinas to Trent Horn), I was already won over by the Catholic Church in the battle for reason. This time, I want to share another aspect of my faith journey, not focusing too much on apologetics.
Spoiler warning: Particularly, major story details regarding the Fontaine Archon Quest (Archon Quest, Chapter 4) and Act 1 of Furina’s story quest, all from Genshin Impact, are present.

Part I: The World as Theater
I was the type to be convinced through reason, and I always thought faith and reason must be intertwined. With how Catholicism handles truth (including morality) rigorously, I knew that the Church is beautiful for that: in fact, many of the greatest Western scientists in history are Catholic. Yet even as I learned Catholic theology, I still felt separate from the Church even though I had a great deal of respect for it.
I found Furina to have lived virtually her entire life as an "actor," and the entire world was a stage to her. To save the nation of Fontaine (based on France), her nation, from destruction, she had to deceive her own people into believing her to be the Hydro Archon, a god who rules over that water nation. This is part of a plan to subvert a prophecy that will engulf Fontaine in a flood of Primordial Seawater that kills all Fontainians who touch it, but the full details are beyond the scope of this post. And as such, she lived for 500 years building her image as a "perfect goddess." Virtually Furina's entire life involves her putting up a mask. However, regardless of intent, having to live a lie is a painful experience to behold, and Furina would cry herself to sleep over her loneliness.
The masquerade worked on the player, as throughout the beginning of the Fontaine Archon Quest (Archon Quest, Chapter 4, Act 1), we see Furina as bratty, flamboyant mascot of the nation. A superstar that citizens would pay to see. However, we eventually learn Furina to be a flawed human, and not the perfect archon as what is conveyed in her public image. The citizens also found out about it in her court trial, where she was tried by her own people to check if she’s the Hydro Archon.
Though the prophecy was subverted in a way that the citizens were still saved anyway, Furina nevertheless was disheartened as she went through years and years of failure, where she felt she didn’t do enough to save the citizens of Fontaine. After all, there were still those whose lives were claimed by the Primordial Seawater, most notably in the flooding incident at Poisson Village. After Fontaine was saved, she felt she no longer had any use, for in her eyes, the Fontainians are angry at her because their beloved “Hydro Archon” did nothing. But Furina felt liberated in the sense that she can now live her life again in a way that she does not have to please the world.

Furina as depicted in the music video “End of All” by Aimer. In that scene (Archon Quest, Chapter 4, Act 5), the player “watches” the daily life of Furina in the form of a stage play. By day, she plays the role of a superstar. By night, she feels powerless in her attempt to stop the prophecy, and because she cannot tell anyone about the truth, she cries herself to sleep. A daily cycle that goes for 500 years. Before going to sleep, Furina ends each day with the following words: “So interminable… so lonely… how much longer?” When I played through this scene in the game, I felt this to be one of the most painful I have ever went through in fiction. And that's because I can see myself in Furina.
Part II: Walking With the Little Oceanid
“If you become human, you can reveal your secret to no one. You will face suffering and loneliness. Is this what you truly want?” (Animula Choragi Chapter, Act 1: The Little Oceanid)
I was excited when the Fontaine region came out, and even knew I wanted to get Furina as soon as news of her character design was made public. I hardly cry for a fictional character, but when I do, it was merely crying for said character. But when I witnessed Furina’s antics in the events of the game, and eventually walked with her through her struggles, my experience was different because I cried together with her and sharing the same pain. Furina is someone I could relate to a lot as someone who felt imperfect and broken. As a student who experienced Impostor Syndrome, I felt like I had to meet societal expectations in the discipline I am specializing in (I study math), or that I am not doing enough. Furina and I chased for a desire to be simultaneously honest and be loved. That was why I felt so happy getting to know Furina, and why I regard her as a comfort character. It significantly helped that I liked her design and other fun aspects of her personality, particularly her cuteness and her wit. At that time, and even as I played Genshin Impact especially since I have Furina in my party, I had a great feeling of inner peace and comfort. When I finished the final act of the Fontaine Archon Quest, I fondly remember that Sunday last November because although I was not a weekly mass-goer yet, I felt so moved to attend Mass that day. Yet back then, I did not understand exactly what made me go.
What pushed away from the Church was that I suffered from scrupulosity over sin. In fact, it was only this year that I learned there is a word for that. I had a period of contemplating about the Catholic faith last March, and I felt deeply conscious about the sins I have made over the past years. I took a visit to my school’s local campus ministry one day, and I had a conversation with a minister there. At that time, I felt a longing to return to God and a desire to be loved. The minister had me read The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32), and it was a very familiar parable to me, but it made me remember when one of my past theology instructors would love to talk about this parable to remind us that God loved us first, even if we don’t love Him back, and even if we do not love ourselves. When I cried reading that parable again, I felt similar feelings to what I felt when playing through Furina’s story.
At some point earlier in my life, I studied the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, including that we can find God in all things. Thus, I wonder if introducing me to Furina was God’s way of comforting me and attempting me to bring me home. How God exactly worked behind the scenes, I admit that I have no answer to that, but I nevertheless appreciate the talents of the artists and writers at Hoyoverse to make this possible. It is interesting because I have sidelined God from my life for years and could not remember the last time I fully enjoyed praying before then. What is amazing is how Furina was also that one character I anticipated the longest for her release, as I saved almost an entire year’s worth of Primogems (in-game currency used to get characters) patiently waiting for her release because I was excited ever since her design was revealed. At the time of this writing, she’s my most-invested character in terms of Primogems.
A lot of Genshin Impact players would point out various Biblical references in the Fontaine Archon Quest (like original sin and salvation), and some would say Furina and Focalors are a reference to the Holy Trinity. However, when I walked with Furina, she also reminded me of the Prodigal Son. Furina may be resilient, but she also desires to be loved despite her imperfections, just like I do. So for a time, I had Furina keeping me company while I play.
Part III: The Return Home
“God loves us; we need only to summon up the humility to allow ourselves to be loved.”
– Pope Benedict XVI
I believe that if there is one thing to be learned from Furina, it is humility, the mother of all virtues. C.S. Lewis describes humility as “not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” I am amazed by Furina’s character arc and how much she grows even at the conclusion of the Fontaine Archon Quest. Throughout her character arc, she opens up to the Traveler (player character). She opens herself up to love. And that to be a recipient of love, you must humble yourself to receive.
On the fourth week last March, I went to confession for the first time in seven years: it was one scheduled after my confessor had presided in a Mass. I felt deterred at first to go to confession, especially since I had bad experiences of confiding in people who will just betray my trust. And that’s why I sympathize with Furina when she was secretive about her own faults. Perhaps it made me appreciate the Seal of the Confessional even more: when you enter the confessional and mention your sins out loud, you are not speaking to the priest directly; you are speaking to Christ who is acting through the priest. The priest is In Persona Christi, and it’s something a lot of lukewarm Catholics forget about. If ever we are lonely like Furina, we have a place to feel safe in God’s embrace. The seal exists to ensure that our loving relationship with God is respected, and that we no longer have to fear like Furina did. I was in the confessional for about half an hour, but that day was the day I knew I was back at home, the same home I ran away from even though I have claimed to belong there. I was lost, but now I was found.
The Church is a hospital for sinners, and not a club for saints. I fell out of the Church when I treated it like a club for saints when I was younger.
Epilogue
I now go to confession monthly (at minimum), attend Mass weekly, and I also pray the rosary daily. I also started to appreciate receiving the Eucharist by the tongue. A few people I talk to have said that my faith in God and my prayer habits have helped me be more optimistic and mentally resilient. I think they’re right, and I hardly feel lonely anymore. Living without God (and my Heavenly Family, which includes Mary and the saints) felt like Hell on Earth.
As a disclaimer, the only god I worship is our Lord, and I don’t use fictional characters as a substitute for a relationship with God, haha. But I hope I have enlightened you on why I appreciate Furina a lot, for no fictional character has ever touched my heart as she did. I felt like I was sailing in a lost ship, and God just placed a lighthouse in the middle of the ocean to help me navigate the fog and return to Him. I will be forever grateful to God for setting up the stage to get me to know Furina because she reminds me a lot about myself and the Prodigal Son. I felt like reflecting as I walk with Furina was very helpful in softening my heart to receive God’s love and mercy.
I always had doubts being initiated into a church I am hesitant to commit to. And now those doubts are gone, I am happy to say that I hope to be confirmed into the Catholic Church this year.

2024.05.18 01:43 NNPW22 Pinned Weekly Status Update and Discussion

Mods,
I thought I saw a status update post earlier today or yesterday, but now I can't sewm to find it. It had information regarding the status of the website, that a template to send to MPs was being worked on and more.
It might be worth having a post pinned that has a weekly status update on what has been completed so far and upcoming plans that require the help of the members of this sub to help execute. It could be a great place for discussion, planning, and idea sharing. This way, more people can jump in and help out on tasks as needed.
It would also be great if the post had links to the upcoming website, Facebook, discord, telegram, templates, flyers, etc. So that it is easy for members to get the tools they need, they need to share information with our fellow Canadians.
I personally can't wait to start slapping up flyers all over my city.
Rock on Canadians!
Edit: Spelling.
