Ordinarily such a mistake would’ve earned his adjutant an hour-long dressing down and possibly, if the Colonel was feeling particularly enthusiastic, a sharp backhanded slap across the face. After all, a leaky tent could hardly be said to be hermetically sealed, now could it? But this affront to his sensibilities paled in comparison to the utter travesty and exemplar of sheer incompetence that now sat before his desk, a sagging wreck of a man in the tattered uniform of a Fleet officer. Colonel Moch Leelan curled his lip at it and barked:
“Once more, if you please. And I don’t want this on record,” he added, darting a look at the clerk poised to take dictation in the corner of the room, “Not a word of this gets out. There’s been enough of a snafu already, and the brass won’t stop shitting down my neck about Mound 13 and the loss of Prota’s pestilential pet project. Did you hear me, man? I said start from the beginning!”
Outside the monsoon was intensifying into one of those proverbial downpours which prompted doddering old men to remark that it was ‘raining cats and dogs’, though what either a cat or a dog were, none could now say. A trickle of it seeped in like a string of winking glass beads, catching the orange glow of the gas lamp and turning into sparks of amber, into seeds of flame. They dripped on the bald man seated on the low footstool, and he raised his head to meet the scornful gaze of the Colonel, grey eyes unabashed and unafraid. He spoke then, in a hoarse voice that matched his pallid flesh and buzzard nose:
“It was the third day of reconnaissance. We were forced to abandon our pack-beasts in the mire. My assistant and I—”
“Name, rank and serial number!” Colonel Leelan interrupted, for the sole purpose of seeing the coward blink and quaver like the worm he was. But in that he was to be disappointed, for the man continued in the same flat tone:
“Sollem Deschane, Lord Navigator, 3rd Pathfinder Regiment, serial number 18911944. We received orders from the Admiralty and Fleet Command to reconnoiter the area around the enemy concentration designated as Mound Euler. I was to lead a platoon of twenty handpicked volunteers across the river Foss at its lowest point, then scale the outlying cliffs to get better readings as we mapped out the approaches to Mound Euler. It was the third day of reconnaissance. We were forced to abandon our myropods in the mud and carry our own gear. My assistant navigator Rene Louvoture and I noticed a discrepancy with our visually confirmed data and the aerial sketches of the Aeronautical Division. We quickly worked out that the enemy concentration far exceeded initial estimates by an order of magnitude. Mound Euler is an omega-class colony the likes of which the Fleet has faced only once in its entire existence, during the Scouring of Assail. It is my belief that—”
“Leave your hysterics for later and get on to meat of things,” Leelan snapped. Deschane straightened a bit in his seat and scowled as his layers of bandages shifted. The man was practically mummified by the sheer extent of his wounds that it was a wonder he had managed to limp into the tent in the first place. But the navigator had made a point of refusing to be debriefed in his sick bed and had insisted that he be given no further pain killers. This was to prove that his report was not at all influenced by the effects of opiates, as well as to underline the supposed importance of his eyewitness account as the sole survivor of the siege of Mound 13.
But Colonel Leelan was no fool. He knew the tactic for what it was: a bit of playacting by a soon-to-be-disgraced officer, a desperate attempt to pass himself off as a tragic hero rather than the author of the most monumental military cock-up of the decade.

For a moment his mask of iron cracked and he looked tired enough to sleep for a thousand years, never to waken. Then he seemed to recall that his career was at stake and had the temerity to argue with the Colonel:
“We were given faulty intelligence. I made mistakes, I’ll admit that here and now. We should never have continued after our pack animals were trapped in the mire. The gear slowed us down in enemy territory. I can’t wash my hands of the loss of my platoon. They were the best and bravest men I ever fought with, and I will carry the shame of losing them to my grave. The fact that I am still alive when none of them are breathing is an accident that was not of my choosing. As for Mound 13, it was only a matter of time before they were discovered and dealt with. They were only two day’s travel from Mound Euler. In fact, it was miracle they managed to exist for so long undetected.”
Magnificent deflection. Colonel Leelan had to admire the snake and his flawless attempt to pass the blame onto the shoulders of the dead Rear-Admiral Prota.
Yes, I think we can make an arrangement here, the Colonel thought wryly. He waved Deschane’s prattling aside and said:
“This omega-class colony of yours. A mound so large that is beggars belief, you say? Curious, then, that such an object should have escaped your keen senses for three whole days!”
“Visibility in that terrain and climate is poor. But yes, it was another one of my errors.”
“I’m so glad that you agree,” Leelan purred, his words dripping with condescension. He reached into the drawer of his desk and took out a bottle of fermented honeydew. Uncorking it with a loud pop, he poured out two glasses and lifted one to his lips, saying:
“On a related note, it’s funny how the fog of war can obscure so many important details. Even the best commanders can lose their bearings, lose sight of the greater picture, fixate on the wrong things. Take our dearly departed Rear-Admiral Prota, for example (may she rest in the Flight Eternal). Not to speak ill of the dead, but she was assigned an entire sector for her research into enemy behavior. And what does she do with it? Cultural studies! Anthropology! As if the Amits have a culture worth sneezing at! They’ve been working with flint and wood since this primeval war of ours began, and they’ve never taken the hint. Meanwhile, we’ve finally gained the advantage of powder and artillery and mass-produceable gas masks.”
“One big push! That’s all it would take to clear the northern highlands. We have the men, the will and the technology to do it! The last thing we need is some starry-eyed academic telling us that the Amits have somehow found religion. I mean, really!” Colonel Leelan warmed to his subject, “Five thousand soldiers dedicated to safeguarding some blessed cave paintings, right on the frontlines, too! What a waste. Like you said: if you hadn’t led the Amits directly to them, someone else would have down the line.”
“We took steps to ensure they wouldn’t follow us. We tried, but they found the fear-death pheromones—”
“Steps?” Leelan pressed him mercilessly, “What steps, exactly?”
Deschane looked away and said nothing. Leelan sniffed, continuing:
“I thought so. As I was saying, Prota’s project was doomed from the start. It was an ill-conceived, harebrained mission, and now the Admiralty will have to explain to Fleet Command and the general public how it lost an entire regiment in the name of some woman’s flight of fancy. But there is a silver lining to all this. Seeing as how we recaptured what was left of Mound 13 within mere hours of it falling, we think there’s a way to salvage the situation after all. You can be part of that, Deschane. Every victory may have its price, but it must also have its heroes.”
Leelan sipped his honeydew, waiting for the offer he’d made to sink in. Deschane smiled, a humorless crack in his granite features.
“You’re going to make me a hero?” he asked. Leelan nudged the other glass towards him, shrugging:
“And why not? Someone has to wear the medals. ‘Lone Survivor of Desperate Last Stand’,” Leelan exclaimed, dramatically forecasting the future headlines, “He tried to warn them, but did they listen? You get the rest, I imagine. We’ll have to improve some of the details, of course. Like how it was the 3rd Pathfinder Regiment which held back the flood of Amits in the final hour and ignited the fortress’ ammo depot—”
“We never did that,” Deschane objected, rudely cutting off Leelan’s train of thought, “It was the Divine Engine. I saw it with my own eyes. It broke out of Mound 13 and slaughtered the enemy.”
Leelan sighed.
“Not this again. Deschane, I’d appreciate it if you’d save your hallucinations for the regimental shrink. Think, man! The honor of our unit is at stake here. You have a chance to redeem the men of your platoon, even if you can never truly redeem yourself.”
“I saw it,” Deschane growled, and for a moment Leelan almost reached for his ceremonial saber hanging by its belt on his coatrack, “Sir, it left footprints the size of—”
“For heaven’s sake, you witless worm, the earthquake was felt all the way in the Southern Delta! Not very big one, but certainly enough to account for the avalanches and landslides that took place around Mound 13, not to mention the sinkhole we found you snoring in! It’s certainly not the first time an uncontrolled detonation triggered a seismic event. Deschane, I’ll only say this once: either you get your story straight or by thunder, I’ll bury you so deep in shit you’ll start to think you’re made of it! And you are! If you breathe a word of this delirious vision of yours to the press, you’ll not only receive no medals, but I’ll have you court-martialed faster than you can say ‘diddly-squat’. Which is precisely what you’ll be left with unless you jump like a good boy and ask how high. No honor, no rank, no reputation, no pension. Nothing! Do you understand?”
Colonel Leelan wrathfully thrust the glass at Deschane, spilling most of it in the process.

Deschane hobbled out of the tent, escorted by a pair of grenadiers in fluffy white shakos. They sealed the adhesive lining of the tent airlock after him and the Navigator went on his way, the taste of honeydew lingering on his tongue like a bitter poison. He lifted his mask and hawked up a gob of spit that eloquently described his opinion of the colonel, wiping his scowling mouth with the back of his hand.
Ven was waiting for him with the crutches, a young and rather portly corporal with apple cheeks and a worried, pouting mouth. She helped Deschane as he made the slow and painful walk across the encampment to his field tent, the lord navigator deep in thought. Along the way they cut across the central avenue of the camp where a seemingly endless artillery train was lumbering its way up from the south and curving around the broad talus skirts of Gorgo Plateau, teams of scuttling myropods hitched to six or twelve-pounder guns, their hundreds of tiny legs threshing the soil into a quagmire. Behind them, plodding dejectedly into the rapidly liquefying mud, were ranks upon rank of fresh colonial levees, their brand-new sealant suits creaking loudly at the joints as they made what for most of them would be their first expedition into the surface world.
And what a foray it would prove to be. Almost two hundred thousand men amd women were mustered here at the edge of civilization, poised on the cusp of what was to be the largest surface offensive in recorded history. The Fleet had arrived in the Northern Hinterlands, and it had come to conquer.
"Gangway!" the levees hollered at Ven as she tried to cut a path for Deschane through the line, "Can't you see we's marching 'ere, ya stoopid bint?"
"He's an officer, ain't he?" she screamed back, pointing at the navigator.
Upon noticing the faded chevrons on Deschane's shoulders some of them clumsily snapped to attention, stopping in their tracks. Their comrades behind them, oblivious to this turn of events, bowled right into them, causing a minor stampede. Men and women cursed as they dropped their pristine muskets, never fired in the heat of battle, into the churning soup at their feet, or themselves went sprawling on their hands and knees. Baton-wielding sergeants descended on the mess, screaming for them to get back up, generously assisting them with a boot to the rump or a smack on the side of the head. Deschane looked back at the display for a long moment, as if considering something. Abruptly he grunted at Ven and they continued on their way to the outskirts where the Pathfinders were billeted.
She waited until they were inside the tent and Deschane was back in his sick bed, the navigator turning his back to her in stony silence. Cautiously, she ventured:
“What now, sir?”
“Draw up a list of volunteers,” he rasped, “But do it on the sly. We’re going back out there."
"Very good, sir," Ven squeaked, and went scurrying out of the navigator's chambers, sealing the tent flap softly behind her. She knew that tone and what it signified: the lord navigator had made up his mind, and heaven help whoever would stand in his way.

Hi Everyone.
Trying to ferment BNR17 (109 F as per Dr Davis book) and Digestive advantage coagulans(114 to 120F) in 2 different jars in the same sous vide bath. I have set the temp to 109.4 (43C), would that be ideal for Cogulans? Or can I up the temp to say 112 to 114? I know SIBO yogurt with Reuteri takes it down much further. But in my case Reuteri is already fermented seperately, so was wondering what would be the sweet spot between these 2. Thanks.

Views on property by whigs varied, but one strain of thought put forth something like the follow. First, we should respect other people's (some might say creatures') autonomy and equal status as ends onto themselves, and we should try to not lessen or hurt each other. Second, if someone adds to themself without lessening another, they probably have not wronged anyone. Third, because of the first and second points, it follows that we can mix our labor with natural resources and have a property claim to the result, so long as we have not lessened, hurt, or restricted another in the process, by, for example, taking more than a fair share of land and thereby depriving others of a home or means to feed themselves.
Contrary to this thinking, there is a common thread running a thousand years through history. It starts with the Norman Invasion which imposed feudalism on the English people in the 11th century, it then runs to 12th century complaints about Normans hogging up land, it then runs to the Peasants' Revolt of the 14th century, then to the enclosure of the commons and depopulation of some villages to make way for wool production in the 16th century, then to English republicans denouncing this theft of the people's land in the 17th century, then to land reform efforts by whigs in the 18th and 19th centuries (including during the Anti-Rent War of New York), then to the housing crisis of the 21st century.
This is the common thread: the general public has suffered an unnecessary and unjust burden ever since a small class of people declared that the earth belonged to them alone, and imposed themselves on the villages, towns, and cities of England (later on the settlements in the colonies), by supposed right of the king, by supposed right of heaven. This insane system has largely survived until today by disguising itself as part of republicanism, but it is a remnant of feudalism. It is presented as the ideology of private land rights, when it is only the feudal theory of private land rights, and is in opposition to the classical republican theory which holds that land is a natural thing like the air, not the creation of humans, and that we all have an equal right to the land, to shelter ourselves in homes, to feed ourselves with produce, and to come together in a republican manner to decide the particulars of this equitable arrangement, like by imposing land value tax on those granted the privilege of holding more or better land than average.

Hopefully this guide can serve as an exciting primer for people who know nothing about Gnosticism, but it's meant to delight and entertain even those who already gnow. I wrote it as the opener for an upcoming Gnostic novella, a malicious post-Sethian fantasia coming out in June.

It is our vivifying cosmic light, holy and normally immortal, and in fact did not originate in our puny human selves but was borrowed from God and trapped inside our body’s prison, our soul’s hole. Yet our spicule of divine light is not safe. If we don’t arrange its heavenly escape through gnosis—that is, through secret knowledge of spiritual mysteries—then when we die, we vanish forever, our sharp sparks of holy spirit pulled down guttering into oblivion along with the material that cages us.
Or so an ancient Gnostic might have explained to a willing Catholic, circa 250 CE. A few midnight meetings later, he might let slip that the Trinity is slightly more extended than certain naïve believers imagine, and that our bodies are patterned on the Cosmic Man. I imagine his eyes flicking from side to side, before he unwraps a bundle of scrolls, pushing aside The Archangelic Book of Moses the Prophet in favor of a painstakingly detailed diagram illustrating the 365 angels of the solar year and their one-to-one correspondence to the parts of the human body—and incidentally, he says, did you know that there is a soul of hair, a soul of bone, a soul of skin? A psychical body that overlies our physical body? He’s started smiling, slowly putting down his inhibitions, for the Catholic has been plying him with date wine, and anyway the Gnostic is just so relieved to have found a friend, a fellow traveler fascinated in secret knowledge, in true salvation, in escaping their hostile world… Unfortunately, the brotherly-faced Catholic is planning to denounce him first thing tomorrow, and his valuable scrolls will be destroyed, and on some level the Gnostic senses it and ends up nearly whispering his secrets, implicitly pleading. Adam was androgynous, you see. The Holy Spirit is the Triple Male. Material is evil. Material is the portion of corruption nailed to our spirits. Like a satanic Jesus of darkness it suffers from our purity. We have been fettered with forgetfulness and deafened by death. Also: maybe not everyone has spirit. Only some do; the other humans are just creations. And as for the fellow called God, well he uh. Has a few dark secrets... “Oh, don’t look so uptight,” the Gnostic might say, anxiously chuckling: “Remember, I’m a Christian too!”
And he’d be right. Back in his day, the Church hadn’t entirely cornered power, clamped down on all other doctrines, and crushed the mindbending diversity of early Christianities in the Wild Wild Near-East. All around our Gnostic, there fumed and flowered a largely unpruned, rampant garden of sects and types and lifestyles, whose swarms of heaven-hunting believers spread out into hundreds of groups, used dozens of gospels, and disagreed on the most basic elements of doctrine, their beliefs resembling one another yet differing like the dialects of a diverging spiritual language. Within this ferment already shadowed by the upraised boot of the Church, the groups we refer to as the Christian Gnostics—actually Sethians, Valentinians, Thomasites, Cainites, Ophites, Carpocratians, Borborites, and many others—merely represented particularly spicy and syncretic Christians, a sort of semi-exclusive and avant-garde R&D tendency, their adepts intent on hidden knowledge, personal enlightenment, and the occasional rapturous ascent. Many believed in Jesuses, in an unfolded Trinity, in a higher baptism… it’s just that they also happened to mistrust the Abrahamic God and his world; to differ on the meaning and status of Jesus; to draw ideas from Platonism, Neopythagoreanism, Zoroastrianism, and possibly their dreams; and to ground salvation not in the problem of sin but on the pursuit of gnosis, their writers regularly soaring into metaphysical flights of rhetoric that portrayed our world as a cosmic mirage, an intoxicating nightmare from which the inspirited seeker must only awake.
Against such mystics, the Church had every advantage. It had party loyalty, centralized discipline, and a soberer, slightly more realist Christianity, with a message aimed at everyone and not just the self-selected few. It had simplicity, organization, and ruthlessness, grace and very sharp knives. The Church Fathers would put the Gnostics to great use, in part defining their own orthodoxy through the expulsion of Gnosticism, and the destruction of its texts… which is a shame, for many eccentric, beautiful, unique and surprising ideas must have disappeared forever into graves and clerical fires. Before the Church’s iron gate whanged shut and the flames ignited, the Gnostics were carting around wheelbarrowfuls of secret books, glittery kaleidoscopic treasuries of scripture—treatises, cosmogonies, incantations, prophecies, apocalypses, some of which were masterpieces of mystical rhetoric, offered original answers to notorious theological conundrums, or upended mainstream Abrahamic stories and embroidered them with conceptual rhinestones. Flip through the fraction of texts that’ve survived—scriptures like The Tripartite Tractate, The Secret Book of John, The Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit, Eugnostos the Blessed, Pistis Sophia, or The Gospel of Judas—and you’ll meet the female Holy Spirit, Judas as a double agent working for the side in white, the snake in Eden as a hero bringing the gift of enlightenment, and Jesus as the Word laughing on the cross because his real body, his spiritual body, is uncrucifiable. You’ll hear the cross itself speak. You’ll be treated to ritual glossolalia and cryptic hints at a baptism called the Five Seals. You’ll read prayers for secret power, lyrical visions of cosmic churches, of the abolition of illusion and the death of death, of how Error, with power and in beauty, made a substitute for Truth. You will be told that humans ate of two trees, the Tree of Enlightened Insight, and the Tree of Life, which cursed our spirits to forget eternity: now we “have been bound with dimensions, times, and seasons, and fate is master of all.”
But the most audacious and churchshaking of all Gnostic myths—the myths that brought the Church Fathers’ meteors down upon their heads, the myths that finally sent our hypothetical Catholic shouting into the cold desert night, cursing our Gnostic to the Devil—have survived in great detail and in many forms. I alluded to these already: I mean the shocking creation stories which claimed that the Jews and Christians had all the details upside-down, backward and darkly, that the Abrahamic God was not what naïve Abrahamites believed, that Genesis told only half the story, and that the Question of Evil, that perennial puzzler and atheist-maker, had the simplest answer imaginable.
See, many Gnostics split the Abrahamic God in two.
They had an upper God of unmitigated goodness, the great invisible spirit, the transcendent Middle Platonic God, the God of Jesus and of Paul, you know him: he’s the ineffable, unknowable, taciturn and enigmatic Father of Justice, to be kneeled under with utmost humility. This omnipotent self-originator was the first maker and the source of all spirit, and he created through thought, forming ideas which solidified into autonomous beings. First he emanated the rest of the Trinity—at least in some texts—but then he branched like a cosmic river into a flowing family tree of divine attributes, emanations both separate and a part of him, plural and one, grooving interlocked in a higher-dimensional bliss of mutual adoration. This perfect Father—especially in the myths of Jewish Gnostics called Sethians—had no direct role in the creation of evil or our world, and bore absolutely no responsibility for our suffering.
No, evil and our world only appeared when the youngest emanation, called Wisdom, or Sophia, struck out on her own and committed a catastrophic spiritual crime. The nature of the crime varies from text to text, but usually she attempted to create by herself, without her partner, or to comprehend the upper God—either way, she violated the cosmic order, acting in presumption and deficiency, out of unspeakable pride. And from her pride was born a monster.
This was the lower God, an evil deity called Yaldabaoth or the Demiurge, a mid-powered craftsman-God adopted from Platonism but mutated by Sethians into an insecure, fucked-up loser. This cack-handed cretin woke up alone in darkness, concluded that he had made himself, and then—since he was ultimately a cracked mirror of the great invisible creator—set about slapping our unreal world together, making it from shadows and dreams and other spare illusions. As he worked, he unconsciously copied heavenly forms and hierarchies… and did a terrible job. He might have been evil, he might have created a million styles of suffering, but Yaldabaoth was not at all a Christian Satan, not some diabolically intelligent heavy-metal pain-lord looming over his earthly hellscape; no, this moody, jealous punisher, this embodied sacrifice-sniffer, this amateurish meddler roving up and down and flinging lightning bolts at his own people, demanding ceaseless slaughter and sacrifice, was the God of the Old Testament, revealed not just as a murderous jerk but as a dumb, talentless hack, his mediocre world like a child’s drawing blotched with red-crayon scribbles of blood, a moldy, stinking parody of all goodness and worth.
Worse, Yaldabaoth suffered under his own inferiority and lashed out when he felt challenged. When we humans threatened to surpass him by enlightened insight, he shackled us to fate and locked us into death, so that we would forget our greatness which made him feel so subpar. Imagine: billions of people have died in the mostly ghastly conceivable ways, all because our gnosis wounded his ego. A petty tyrant writ cosmically large, he would have been pathetic, even pitiable, if he weren’t the showrunner of our lives, the petulant orchestrator of all pain, bitchily yanking at the puppet strings of the theater of torture that we think of as our world—that colossal junkyard of illusions where people reel around confused by death, dazzled by materiality, blinded by the daily phantasmagoria of horrors, having abandoned their inner wells of living light, though their flesh-buried sparks of spirit are ever tantalized by the rapturous fragrance of the All, though their darkened minds always sense on some level that they do not belong here, that it is possible to wake up from this nightmare, that reality is not real, existence does not exist, and to be is not to be.
We must picture our early Catholic, in the moments before his noisy flight, staring with nauseated horror at the Gnostic. That bloodhound of enlightenment hasn’t looked up in a while, retelling his creation story with awe and trembling, mesmerized and moved all over again by this heady doctrine which contains the solution to his suffering, the explanation for his pain, for his fears and feelings about the world, about being watched, toyed with, persecuted, about being misled and betrayed and hated, about truth being concealed and difficult to find, about the somnolence of the masses. The demonic pains in his gut, the death of his infant daughter, the idiots in charge everywhere at all times, the staggeringly high victory-rate of the forces of darkness, the godawful, unforgivable suffering of innocents—all this finally made sense. Our Gnostic found an elegant answer to the Question of Evil, and had the Churchites been able to bear it, they might have saved themselves millennia of defensive oratory on the perennially red-eyed and heart-rending question of why innocents suffer. Ask the Catholic why a good God made evil, and you’ll get that familiar rigmarole about how we are granted free will in order to be tested, to sort good from evil and place our salvation in our own hands; ask a darkened luminary like Dostoevsky, if you want to be informed that we need to suffer to be able to choose Jesus, and if necessary the poor must starve and die. All those blameless children who get beaten, diddled, napalmed? They’re collateral damage in the great sorting of souls, victim of someone else’s wrong choice, destroyed by a design some call intelligent. But why, precisely, did a good God have to make evil? Why cancer, why brain parasites? Why boil us in the tar pit of time? The Gnostic shrugs sadly, expansively, with thick maroon smudges under his eyes, and, idly rotating a lamp he’s staring into, with little lights dancing in his pupils, reveals the truest thing he knows: that innocents bleed, the rapacious rule, and our lives are carnage incarnated, because our world is a psychotic prison made from pride and pain, a ceaseless cycle of suffering dreamed down by a colossal lion-headed wanker. Our world was created by a counterfeit, a ravener and a ravisher, a violent and childish dumb-ass, and we may confirm the bad news with this insight from the Gospel of Phillip:
“God is a man-eater, and so humans are sacrificed to him.”

I understand that there is now Kombucha Salad Dressing. What I’m saying is that Kombucha was originally created as an attempt to find another way to sell salad dressing…and they did it successfully. They are just taking advantage of every possible avenue in order to sell salad dressing. 75% of Salad dressings that are available at most supermarkets go through some form of a fermentation process that is very similar to Kombucha, but not quite to the same degree.
Kombucha is a fermented drink made from sugar, bacteria, and yeast.
Not only do they taste extremely similar, but there are also countless Salad Dressings that are made the same exact way.
I want to mention that I actually do like Kombucha. Although, I also understand that most Salad Dressings do not share the equivalent health benefits that Kombucha claims to provide.
TLDR: The only difference between Kombucha and Salad Dressing is how they are marketed.

Concerning Dangers from Dissensions Between the States
To the People of the State of New York:
THE three last numbers of this paper have been dedicated to an enumeration of the dangers to which we should be exposed, in a state of disunion, from the arms and arts of foreign nations. I shall now proceed to delineate dangers of a different and, perhaps, still more alarming kind--those which will in all probability flow from dissensions between the States themselves, and from domestic factions and convulsions. These have been already in some instances slightly anticipated; but they deserve a more particular and more full investigation.
A man must be far gone in Utopian speculations who can seriously doubt that, if these States should either be wholly disunited, or only united in partial confederacies, the subdivisions into which they might be thrown would have frequent and violent contests with each other. To presume a want of motives for such contests as an argument against their existence, would be to forget that men are ambitious, vindictive, and rapacious. To look for a continuation of harmony between a number of independent, unconnected sovereignties in the same neighborhood, would be to disregard the uniform course of human events, and to set at defiance the accumulated experience of ages.
The causes of hostility among nations are innumerable. There are some which have a general and almost constant operation upon the collective bodies of society. Of this description are the love of power or the desire of pre-eminence and dominion--the jealousy of power, or the desire of equality and safety. There are others which have a more circumscribed though an equally operative influence within their spheres. Such are the rivalships and competitions of commerce between commercial nations. And there are others, not less numerous than either of the former, which take their origin entirely in private passions; in the attachments, enmities, interests, hopes, and fears of leading individuals in the communities of which they are members. Men of this class, whether the favorites of a king or of a people, have in too many instances abused the confidence they possessed; and assuming the pretext of some public motive, have not scrupled to sacrifice the national tranquillity to personal advantage or personal gratification.
The celebrated Pericles, in compliance with the resentment of a prostitute,1 at the expense of much of the blood and treasure of his countrymen, attacked, vanquished, and destroyed the city of the SAMNIANS. The same man, stimulated by private pique against the MEGARENSIANS, 2 another nation of Greece, or to avoid a prosecution with which he was threatened as an accomplice of a supposed theft of the statuary Phidias, 3or to get rid of the accusations prepared to be brought against him for dissipating the funds of the state in the purchase of popularity, 4 or from a combination of all these causes, was the primitive author of that famous and fatal war, distinguished in the Grecian annals by the name of the PELOPONNESIAN war; which, after various vicissitudes, intermissions, and renewals, terminated in the ruin of the Athenian commonwealth.
The ambitious cardinal, who was prime minister to Henry VIII., permitting his vanity to aspire to the triple crown, 5 entertained hopes of succeeding in the acquisition of that splendid prize by the influence of the Emperor Charles V. To secure the favor and interest of this enterprising and powerful monarch, he precipitated England into a war with France, contrary to the plainest dictates of policy, and at the hazard of the safety and independence, as well of the kingdom over which he presided by his counsels, as of Europe in general. For if there ever was a sovereign who bid fair to realize the project of universal monarchy, it was the Emperor Charles V., of whose intrigues Wolsey was at once the instrument and the dupe.
The influence which the bigotry of one female, 6 the petulance of another, 7and the cabals of a third, 8 had in the contemporary policy, ferments, and pacifications, of a considerable part of Europe, are topics that have been too often descanted upon not to be generally known.
To multiply examples of the agency of personal considerations in the production of great national events, either foreign or domestic, according to their direction, would be an unnecessary waste of time. Those who have but a superficial acquaintance with the sources from which they are to be drawn, will themselves recollect a variety of instances; and those who have a tolerable knowledge of human nature will not stand in need of such lights to form their opinion either of the reality or extent of that agency. Perhaps, however, a reference, tending to illustrate the general principle, may with propriety be made to a case which has lately happened among ourselves. If Shays had not been a DESPERATE DEBTOR, it is much to be doubted whether Massachusetts would have been plunged into a civil war.
But notwithstanding the concurring testimony of experience, in this particular, there are still to be found visionary or designing men, who stand ready to advocate the paradox of perpetual peace between the States, though dismembered and alienated from each other. The genius of republics (say they) is pacific; the spirit of commerce has a tendency to soften the manners of men, and to extinguish those inflammable humors which have so often kindled into wars. Commercial republics, like ours, will never be disposed to waste themselves in ruinous contentions with each other. They will be governed by mutual interest, and will cultivate a spirit of mutual amity and concord.
Is it not (we may ask these projectors in politics) the true interest of all nations to cultivate the same benevolent and philosophic spirit? If this be their true interest, have they in fact pursued it? Has it not, on the contrary, invariably been found that momentary passions, and immediate interest, have a more active and imperious control over human conduct than general or remote considerations of policy, utility or justice? Have republics in practice been less addicted to war than monarchies? Are not the former administered by MEN as well as the latter? Are there not aversions, predilections, rivalships, and desires of unjust acquisitions, that affect nations as well as kings? Are not popular assemblies frequently subject to the impulses of rage, resentment, jealousy, avarice, and of other irregular and violent propensities? Is it not well known that their determinations are often governed by a few individuals in whom they place confidence, and are, of course, liable to be tinctured by the passions and views of those individuals? Has commerce hitherto done anything more than change the objects of war? Is not the love of wealth as domineering and enterprising a passion as that of power or glory? Have there not been as many wars founded upon commercial motives since that has become the prevailing system of nations, as were before occasioned by the cupidity of territory or dominion? Has not the spirit of commerce, in many instances, administered new incentives to the appetite, both for the one and for the other? Let experience, the least fallible guide of human opinions, be appealed to for an answer to these inquiries.
Sparta, Athens, Rome, and Carthage were all republics; two of them, Athens and Carthage, of the commercial kind. Yet were they as often engaged in wars, offensive and defensive, as the neighboring monarchies of the same times. Sparta was little better than a wellregulated camp; and Rome was never sated of carnage and conquest.
Carthage, though a commercial republic, was the aggressor in the very war that ended in her destruction. Hannibal had carried her arms into the heart of Italy and to the gates of Rome, before Scipio, in turn, gave him an overthrow in the territories of Carthage, and made a conquest of the commonwealth.
Venice, in later times, figured more than once in wars of ambition, till, becoming an object to the other Italian states, Pope Julius II. found means to accomplish that formidable league, 9 which gave a deadly blow to the power and pride of this haughty republic.
The provinces of Holland, till they were overwhelmed in debts and taxes, took a leading and conspicuous part in the wars of Europe. They had furious contests with England for the dominion of the sea, and were among the most persevering and most implacable of the opponents of Louis XIV.
In the government of Britain the representatives of the people compose one branch of the national legislature. Commerce has been for ages the predominant pursuit of that country. G&H What do recent guidelines recommend regarding dietary interventions for patients with irritable bowel syndrome?
MS Most current dietary guidelines recommend that patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) first try what has been called traditional IBS dietary advice, which can be found in the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. These focus more on how the patient eats rather than on what different dietary items to exclude. In general, patients should have regular meals and smaller, more frequent meals rather than larger meals infrequently; they should exclude some offending dietary items such as high-fat meals and large amounts of fiber and reduce gas-producing food items such as beans; and they should focus on maintaining healthy eating habits. Traditional IBS dietary advice can be given by nurse practitioners, gastroenterologists, primary care physicians, and so forth, without the need to involve a dietitian or a nutritionist. If that fails, then more restrictive diets can be tried. Most guidelines recommend trying a diet low in fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) often with the help of a dietitian or a nutritionist who supports the patient in following a more cumbersome and potentially more harmful diet.
Beyond the low-FODMAP diet (LFD), there are looser recommendations that for certain patients a gluten-free diet or a low-carbohydrate diet (ie, a diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat and high in protein) may be tried. Some studies support testing a starch- or sucrose-free diet or sucrose-reduced diet. However, these other diets are less evidence based, and recommendations are not clear on how they should be used. Much more evidence is available for the LFD than for the other diets.
G&H Other than the LFD, which diets have shown the most promise in IBS?
MS Of the ones I mentioned, the gluten-free diet probably has the most evidence in IBS. Some IBS studies suggest that there might be some benefits of a gluten-free or wheat-free diet (sometimes the terms are used interchangeably). Most of these diets focus on reducing or avoiding wheat. In contrast to patients with celiac disease who should have a gluten-free diet, in patients with IBS, a reduced-gluten diet is more appropriate. The mechanism behind the effect in IBS is a bit controversial. Some claim that patient response may be related to reduction of the FODMAP content of the wheat, the fructans (the carbohydrate content of the wheat). Perhaps the wheat-free diet can be considered a variant of the LFD that is recommended for IBS patients.
Other less frequently tested diets with some emerging evidence to support their use are low-carbohydrate diets, which focus on reducing all carbohydrates not only the FODMAP-rich foods. If all carbohydrates are lowered, then by default the fat and protein content of food must be increased. This type of diet is popular among patients who want to reduce weight, for instance, and studies with preliminary results show that it may be beneficial for some IBS patients. However, the evidence is much less strong for the low-carbohydrate diet than for the LFD.
The starch- and sucrose-reduced diet can be viewed as a variant of the low-carbohydrate diet and LFD because it also reduces certain carbohydrates. Swedish studies, not from our group but from another group, have shown that the starch- and sucrose-reduced diet has been quite beneficial for patients with IBS. These studies were relatively small and thus not as well controlled as for the LFD. Recently, a study found that use of the Mediterranean-style diet, which is considered healthy in general, compared with continuing a diet as usual, reduced symptoms in patients with IBS. From a general health perspective, it may be tempting to use a Mediterranean-style diet instead of other diets that restrict certain healthy dietary elements. The LFD removes many healthy ingredients. If following the Mediterranean-style diet can help IBS patients, then that may also have benefit from a general health perspective for that group. This is an interesting approach that needs to be explored in more detail.
When I meet patients, in general, I try to encourage them to eat a healthy diet first and see whether that helps, as part of the traditional IBS dietary advice in at least some respects. Dietary advice might swing in that direction in the future if some of the healthier diets being studied prove to be beneficial for patients. Guidelines might recommend promoting these diets first before moving into the more restrictive diets, which have some potential concerns about health benefits in the long run.
G&H What are the main advantages and disadvantages of diets other than the LFD?
MS Being less restrictive is an advantage of some of the other diets (eg, the Mediterranean-style diet). The main disadvantage of the other diets is that they are less well studied in IBS. That is the problem with recommending them to patients. Not much is known about the disadvantages with these diets in IBS in general. Some of the diets other than the LFD are also quite restrictive, which may be an added disadvantage of those diets.
G&H What have recent studies revealed about the gluten-free diet in IBS, and which patients may benefit from it?
MS My understanding of the literature is that there are no clear predictors for a gluten-free diet in IBS that have been demonstrated in studies. In a small mechanistic study that my colleagues and I conducted, we found that identifying clear predictors was quite difficult. In clinical practice, if patients say they have symptoms when eating a wheat-rich diet, then that is a clinical indicator for the physician to recommend trying food without wheat for a period to see whether this dietary adjustment can be beneficial. Patients do not usually have to stop eating wheat totally. They may reduce it, like how patients with lactose maldigestion reduce the lactose content of their food but whose diets do not need to be 100% free of lactose. This is different from patients with celiac disease who should maintain a gluten-free diet. To summarize, there are a limited number of studies so far to support the gluten-free diet in IBS.
G&H What assessments may be helpful before considering a trial of a dietary intervention?
MS Asking whether patients can identify any food triggers is, of course, important. If they feel worse after eating certain meals or foods, then the physician or clinician can work with them on identifying which food components potentially to restrict. Helping patients try to identify triggers is mostly done by a dietitian who can help them maybe have a less restrictive diet by removing only a few dietary triggers.
It is also important for practitioners to look for warning signals, whether there are any signs of severe food avoidance and restriction already, before starting a dietary intervention. Patients who have disordered eating should not be put on a restrictive diet. Signs of malnutrition, for instance, are warning signals to start with a more restrictive diet. These types of signals are important when deciding on the type of dietary interventions. Some of the patients who I always try to send to a dietitian are patients who have a very restrictive eating pattern. The strategy then is not to restrict the eating pattern even more, but to teach these patients how to eat again, by introducing food items. Patient eating patterns should be addressed before embarking on different dietary interventions.
G&H What factors might predict a poor clinical response to an LFD?
MS Studies have demonstrated some predictors for a good or a poor response to an LFD; however, the results are somewhat contradictory. The general theme is that poor response might be related to the microbes in the gut, and even more so, what the microbes produce, the metabolites that can be measured. A recent study from Dr Kevin Whelan’s group demonstrated that the metabolites produced by the microbes are more important than which microbes are there. These assessments are very cumbersome and expensive; for this reason, they are not typically for clinical use. In the future, the key factor may be assessing what happens in the gut when the patient eats, and that can then be used as a predictor for treatment response to the LFD.
There are some indications that patients with more severe gastrointestinal symptoms may do better with an LFD. My colleagues and I noted that indication in a small trial; however, again, this needs to be repeated in larger trials. In another small trial, we found that patients with more psychological symptoms responded less favorably to an LFD, although probably a combination of psychological, gastrointestinal, nutritional, and metabolic factors is of importance. In the clinical trial, predictors may be identified; however, it is difficult in the clinical setting to identify the patient who will respond vs the patient who will not respond.
G&H When should nonresponders to an LFD be switched to another diet or treatment?
MS Normally, the diet is tested for 4 to 6 weeks. Patients who respond are instructed on how to reintroduce the FODMAPs up to the tolerance level of symptoms. This allows patients to have a richer diet than a very restrictive diet. For patients who do not respond within 4 to 6 weeks in any way, the diet is discontinued. Because a diet low in FODMAPs is quite cumbersome and restrictive, it is not tested for longer. In addition, there is a lack of evidence suggesting that testing the diet for longer than 4 to 6 weeks is useful.
G&H Where do you see the field of diet therapies for IBS going in the coming years? What are the key priorities for research and clinical practice?
MS I hope that the field of diet therapies in IBS is heading in the direction of more personalized diets. A personalized approach would be more cumbersome in clinical practice, of course, because of the need to address potentially some of the factors that would predict the response. However, if this approach were possible, gastroenterologists would not have to put all patients on very restrictive diets but maybe select these diets for a few patients and have less cumbersome diets or treatment options for other patients. In general, my hope for the future not only with dietary therapy but also with other therapies is that practitioners are able to personalize diets and therapies much more than is done today.
Moving in the direction toward less restrictive diets would also be ideal. If the Mediterranean-style diet or other healthy diets may prove beneficial, that would be very good for the IBS field. It would be better to help patients by treating their IBS with an overall healthy diet rather than with a more restrictive diet. Gastroenterologists should treat not only IBS, but the entire individual. A diet that reduces IBS symptoms but at the same time causes other risk factors to develop does not help patients.
A key priority for research and clinical practice is to have more dietitians, both clinical dietitians helping patients with IBS and academic dietitians and nutritionists studying IBS. Although gastroenterologists can learn about nutrition, it would be better to have more researchers and clinicians totally focused on nutrition and dietary aspects in the future.

There have been lots of questions about eggs coming in, and I wanted to get some thoughts down about how to buy the best eggs around. Hopefully this will help folks make the best choice for them. While I'm not an expert by any means, I have been raising low PUFA eggs for about 6 years and have learned along the way.
Why is it worth buying quality eggs?
Eggs are an almost perfect food. However, in commercial egg operations, chickens are fed huge amounts of corn and soy, both high in linoleic acid (same stuff in seed oils), which accumulates in their fat, including the egg yolks. Chickens are monogastric animals, and while they don't have a rumen like a cow or sheep, they do have a crop, which is a sack in their neck that ferments seeds, as well as a gizzard, which grinds them up. This allows chickens to live on lower quality food. However, it is still advantageous to seek out eggs with lower PUFA content.
Commercial egg laying operations are also horrendous places for the animals. Often, there are 10k or more birds in a bard, sometimes in battery cages where they are crammed so tight they can't move. The birds eventually get "cagey," which is just a euphemism for quite literally going crazy. They bob their heads, peck at each other, and eventually die. We don't want to support such practices.
How to get the best eggs
The gold standard are chickens raised in a forest and fed supplemental feed free of corn and soy. This is very rare to find. It's how I raise one flock of my birds but it's very uncommon. Corn and soy free feed is incredibly expensive compared to commercial, so expect to pay a premium if you find this option. Forests are the best environment for chickens, which are jungle birds, not pasture birds. In forests, they have shade, shelter from predators, and a myriad of bugs, worms, grubs, even snakes and rodents when they can catch them.
Pasture raised eggs are much more available. A word of caution: just because the carton says pasture raised, it doesn't mean they are high quality. The reason pasture raised are better than confinement raised is that the chickens have access to pasture where they can forage for food. Regulations in the US say that pasture raised chickens need to have access to pasture for most of their lives. It does not say how long chickens need to spend on pasture or anything about the quality of the pasture. A farm could have a big patch of dirt and call it a pasture, even though there's nothing there for the chickens to eat. Similarly, you can have 10k birds in a barn with a 1x1 door on one side leading to a pasture. Most of the birds in that barn wouldn't even know the door exists. So if they aren't accessing it, or it's just a moonscape of bare dirt, what's the benefit of the pasture?
Cage free and free range don't mean much of anything at all. These are mostly marketing terms, although I would personally spend another dollar or two just to know the chickens weren't in cages, even if they were still crammed in a barn with no sunlight.
For the vast majority of people, pasture raised eggs will be the best and most accessible option, although it's still worth looking around to see if local farmers are raising in a forest or silvopasture (a pasture with trees), and/or feeding corn and soy free feed.
Finally, I can't stress enough the importance of buying locally. Verifying the quality of the pasture is important, or at the very least, talking to the farmer about their raising practices. People sell eggs everywhere. Even if you live in a city, farmers markets exist almost everywhere. Go and talk to the farmers. Ask how they raise their birds, what they feed, where they are kept. If you sense that they are put off by these questions, that's a red flag. Any honest farmer will be happy you asked and will gladly tell you everything. Some might even invite you for a tour (avoid asking for one in the first conversation, as farmers are busy people and you don't want to put them on the spot).
On yolk color
Many people think that a darker color yolk means higher quality. This is partially true. Darker yolks often mean the chickens are getting a lot of carotenoids from plants, which is a good sign. However, there are ways to artificially darken yolks, like feeding marigold flowers. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the bigger pasture raised egg producers do this to capitalize on the perception. Yolk color will also change throughout the year. If chickens are in an area with a winter, they won't be foraging all year. I'm in upstate NY, and my birds will be in the forest from about April to November, eating mostly what they forage. In the winter, they are eating mostly feed, so their yolks will not be as dark in the winter as they are in the summer.
Just to recap, the best option for most people will be pasture raised eggs purchased locally. If you really want to optimize and lower PUFA as much as possible, seek out chickens on a corn and soy free diet. But if you're already avoiding seed oils and not eating like 2doz eggs a day, it's probably not a huge deal if you don't want to worry about what they're fed.
Another optimization strategy would be to treat eggs as a seasonal food, which they are. I'm a big fan of seasonal eating, but I don't practice what I preach with eggs because I always have so many. But if you wanted to lower PUFA, you could eat pasture raised eggs all spring, summer, and fall. Then just eat less in the winter when chickens are not laying much and are dependent on feed.

I woke like a coiled spring again, ready to make haste. Bryce didn't sleep as well so I didn't get him up too much earlier than we normally do. The bed was nice but had those damnable bean pillows again, I'd rather have a rolled up towel than those things. One issue is the bed is under a window, besides being poor Feng Shui, you land up with a half curtain that leaks light directly on your face. Good thing we have eye masks.
The goal this morning was to visit the inari shrine, otherwise known as the thousand torii gates. Popular spots dictate early arrival, so we had planned to get up and go. Breakfast was boxed and ready for us when we got downstairs, freshly baked pastries with cut fruit, coffee, and a tomato soup. Delicious and light, perfect for getting moving.
We hopped on our bikes and swiftly made our way through Kyoto in rush hour, weaving around traffic and blitzing down streets and river walks. Bicyclists are treated as pedestrians here, so we did as Japanese do and make the most advantageous route possible on sidewalks and up one ways and all over the place. If anyone is annoyed, they're probably annoyed at cyclists in general rather than us specifically. Bryce got my saddle sores bandaged up with moleskin bandages, so that's helping, but I certainly can't ignore them anymore.
With a tailwind today, we made blinding speed and arrived just after 8. We were warned online that you need to come at sunrise to avoid crowds, but we're conditioned to the cramped nature of tourist sites here and had no issues with the people that were around. The torii gates can't fit three across between them, but not many people were coming down the path yet. I suspected a separate descent path, but who knows at this point.
Anyone who says the shrine is a little boring is wrong and can't be entertained. It's an hour long hike almost completely under vermillion torii gates in a forest, with rest stops with snacks, drinks, and souvenirs along the way. What more does somebody need? There's lots of viewpoints, but it's a religious site, what do you need someone to give you a medal at the top? Buy a trinket they sell near the peak you baby. And sell sell sell they did! As with all big shrines, Inari was very well merched. Don't besmirch the merch! It's a capitalist world and I like pretty things, they gotta keep the place put together somehow!
We got turned around a few times at crossroads, some paths leading into mazes of grave sites like we were in lavender town. A helpful handwritten sign told us we were headed the wrong way at one point and a helpful little map got us back on course. Bryce and I found some extremely cute earrings each that we grabbed and overall we spent two hours going all the way up and around the mountain. Given how we hustled big time it wouldn't surprise me if it took others three to five hours as I saw plenty of folks puffing from the stairs. Compound that by a hundred such folks in front of you and it would be a veeeery slow walk up the mountain.
Coming down to the main gate, you could see the nearby train station pumping tourists in like a beating heart and the neighborhood grinding to a stop under the weight of all the people. A one lane road was absolutely swamped with tourists unable to flatten themselves, cars wading through the reeds of people. We took a back path and ducked under bridges to escape the singularity forming behind us.
Our next goal was to attempt to get kimonos to rent. Bryce really wanted to do this and I was determined not to let my optimizing mind try and derail this one. I gained the concession of having something to eat, however, and Bryce was hungry enough for some real food. There was a grocery store near the kimono shop, so we got a beef Bento there. The difference in time of day was palpable, the Bento tasted like it was just made it was so fresh. Maybe we'll have 1030am grocery food more often. The portion was small, which meant a 1 o'clock lunch was still going to happen. Both of us agreed it was time for a ramen so we didn't want to spoil that.
After eating an odd long bread that was supposed to be french toast, we went into the flurry of fabrics that was the kimono rental shop. A boisterous lady not unlike the matchmaker from Mulan ushered us in, having us sign some forms and then immediately getting us going in the process. The ladies fussed a lot about my height, not sure right away which size I should get. I am right on the precipice of two sizes, but they did stock for women still taller than me, which was neat to see. Not a lot of choices, but I still got to pick from about 8 kimonos in my size. I picked a pale pink floral kimono, and a lady helped me find an obi (belt) to match it. We went with a deep purple to match the flowers on my kimono.
Next I was ushered into a changing room where no less than four ladies got me all dressed up. First, locating socks in my size was a little challenging, but one pair was eventually found. A linen slip was the start of my layers, then a silk one with a nice pattern to cover that up. Then several linen belts, a cloth with another belt, then a stiff wide belt tied like a corset, then another couple layers tied on around the waist, then the silk kimono itself, another set of linen belts, then the silk obi over top of everything. I've worn a corset before, but being tied with nearly a dozen pieces of cloth made breathing laborious. They asked if I wanted to add any accessories, but I was already dying from the amount I was wearing so I decided to keep it simple.
Sweating already, I emerged from the fuss and found Bryce looking a little bored but very sharp in his blue kimono over a black undercoat. I noted that maybe he subsidized my fitting as he didn't need several attendants to get dressed. We picked some sandals and headed outside into the sun.
Immediately I understood why I had been wrapped in absorbent clothing as I could feel my body reject reality. Then came the decision. Do we bike or do we walk. We learn nothing the easy way so we decided to give biking a shot. I was deathly afraid of getting grease on the kimono but found that so long as I tucked one side into the obi I could keep everything clear of the chain. We turned many heads with our antics, and got a supporter in the form of a middle aged woman who found two tourists in full kimonos on agressive bicycles the peak of comedy. She assured us that it was fine just kind of silly to attempt and made sure we knew where we were going. Happy that we were merely being ridiculous, we rode on. From research we have found over and over that Japanese people welcome tourists to wear kimonos, and the dozens of rental shops we saw during the day seemed to confirm this. I think I'd be happy if people wanted to come to my country and wear the clothes that I think look really pretty.
Our first stop was a giant temple just around the corner, we learned that this temple was the head of a whole bhuddist sect and was enormous. Wearing such nice clothes, we felt quite comfortable entering and sitting for a little bit on the huge tatami surface. The temples here are divided into a public area and a altar area, with the altar area being incredibly ornate, with tons of gold. We learned from an information card that the purpose of the wildly ornate altar is to represent the state of ascendant nirvana, which I suppose I can understand on some level. The card explaining the construction methods used was more interesting, the enormous trees used as pillars in the temple were hauled by hand from all over Japan by the faithful, and covered with some 175,000 roof tiles. Wild!
We decided to head to the Gion area as there were a number of places we could walk to as the biking was wildly impractical in a kimono. We passed many others in kimonos, men, women and kids too. Very pretty to see so many people in such lovely clothes, I'm sure it would be quite the sight to see everyone in such attire for formal events. After wandering around a little bit in the crowds we went to a shrine and park at the back of the neighbourhood. Here we got lots of cute pictures and enjoyed doing what you can manage in such clothing, which is tottering around and standing a lot. For such a pile of fabric, it sure is restrictive!
French tourists are as loud as the Chinese ones, good grief. They love to walk at a distance from each other, yapping away, especially if someone is in between them. I think I may just dislike loud people in public, which is why I like Japanese people. Though, they probably think I'm too loud.
Getting a little bit loopy, we continued our walking and looked at the theatre section of Gion, admiring the lovely wooden facades of the very neat streets. While there were a lot of tourists on the main road, quiet side streets hid many very high end restaurants. We could tell if it was very expensive when it has no other indication that it was somewhere you could enter besides a few characters on the door and nothing else. The more advertisement, generally the more desperate the food.
After failing to find a cafe that was in our price range, Bryce found a bar serving craft beers and homemade lemonade. Sounds good to me, lemonade is great on a hot day. Maybe the most surprising thing about japan is how wild they are for citrus, I had no idea of that before coming. I love citrus and it is available everywhere all the time and I love it! Bryce's beer was pretty good but the lemonade was fermented and crazy boozy and fantastic. Loved it, got a little loopy. A stop for green tea ice cream and custard taiyaki later and we were about through with our kimonos.
We got back to the rental shop without issue and returned our garb, but then Bryce noticed his phone was missing. Oh boy. And his watch wasn't connected so it wasn't on us or nearby. Was it clipped to the bike? He didn't remember bringing it in. I didn't have it, he never gave it to me. It's not outside and nobody inside knows where it is. Could it have gotten stolen from the bike while we weren't looking? Bryce started trying to locate it through the Google servers on my phone while I looked frantically upstairs. This would be a major problem! This would cause big problems for our plans. Bryce can't get connected to the servers. I can't find it anywhere. I go to look outside again, maybe it fell on the pavement and fell in the gutter or something. No, there's nothing around. Dejected I go inside to see Bryce holding both phones, happy as a clam. He left it on the shoe rack, it's a metal box and blocked the locating signal from the watch. Crisis averted.
I took a moment to breathe and let the panic wash away. I've gotten much better at this, letting the feeling exist, then fare without pushing or pulling it. Works best when I have a moment of focused quiet. Okay. I told Bryce we're going to Lotteria for dinner because of that. He had no issues with that idea. Lotteria was near our hotel, so not that far away. Bryce got the honey mustard chicken burger and I got the avocado ultimate beef burger. We both got a large fries, I got orange juice and Bryce got a melon soda. All of it was the best and the people were so nice and it's $9 and it's just the best fast food burger in Japan I swear.
After a nice shower we were ready to go to the mystery show of the night, GEAR theatre. It was hosted in an unassuming building, and we climbed up four flights of stairs to our seats, near the ceiling of a tall but modest theatre. Maybe 40 seats total. A very detailed stage with many moving parts greeted us and we were told not to spoil it for others. It was a live show with advanced projection mapping and audio-visual displays, but with no dialogue whatsoever. What a great concept for a show in a city that welcomes so many international tourists. The show was wholesome, an incredible display of skill, funny, surprising, and somehow a tear-jerker, as per Japanese tradition. Why a story can't end on a happy note, I have no idea. At least some of it is happy, unlike french cinema, which is melancholy throughout. 90 minutes well spent, if I was to do it again I would pay more for better seats. 10/10, fantastic effects. There's a reason they've been running for 12 years straight and have done thousands of shows.
After, we had some snacks and hit the arcade for awhile. Bryce got deeper into his battleship game, he's got a persistent game card now, I suppose I'll have to get one too. The arcade games here save your progress in them, there's a lot to explore if you've got the cash. I played a bunch of Mario Kart, very fun with the gas pedal and proper steering wheel. The noise was getting to me though as tiredness took me.
We wandered back to our hotel, stopping for a cup noodle and a lemon soda at 7-11. I'm still hungry dammit. Bryce doesn't feel like his physique has changed much but I've visibly dropped body fat, and I didn't have a lot of extra to start with. I look saran wrapped, there's so much definition on my skin and muscles, even more than when I was testosterone based. I guess I need to eat more still? I feel like an absolute glutton but I guess it has to be done.
Today was a huge day and I'm ready for bed. Tomorrow we have another big day planned and something tells me the night isn't going to end at such a decent time. I'm going to try though, we have a pretty long ride planned for Sunday and some shrinesbto visit on the way out. But who knows how long that plan will hold. I'm definitely learning to be flexible with my plans and be dynamic to my situation instead of doggedly sticking to a plan that was made beforehand. It's a skill to plan just enough to be able to weave a plan as you go, but not waste time making spurious schema that are based on incorrect assumptions not taking into account mood or weather or resources that can't be predicted. A good skill. As is cutting off the writing for the night. Always more to write tomorrow.
