From all the spices, cardamom also known as elaichi is considered the “Queen of spices.” Each has its own unique appeal. Along with its flavor, this precious seed has a rich history and has spread across continents and nations, bringing its pungent impact to cuisines worldwide. Through time and place, we shall explore the journey of cardamom from its humble beginnings to its present-day, highly esteemed position.

Origin of Cardamom and the Early Period of Cardamom History

In the lush forests of the Southern Ghats of India, the elaichi plant, Elettaria cardamomum, is native to the region. Primitive humans initially became aware of this spice’s culinary and fragrant properties in this thicket. Cardamom was first mentioned in writings in the fourth century BC.

Spice of Trade Routes

Cardamom started to expand outside of India with the growth of trade networks and thriving civilizations. Due in large part to their influence, elaichi spread throughout the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. Arab traders were lured to the plant by its distinct flavor and medicinal qualities. In the packed Middle Eastern marketplaces by the 12th century, it was a highly sought-after product.

A Royal Favor

The westward movement of green cardamom was fueled not only by business but also by the monarchy’s attraction to it. Elaichi became well-liked by the European nobility in the Middle Ages as a symbol of elegance and wealth. Its distinct flavor swiftly spread throughout royal kitchens, where it adorned dishes fit for kings and queens.

Worldwide Growth

The global reach of green cardamom was growing as the era of exploration got underway. Spanish conquistadors carried it to the coasts of Central and South America, while Portuguese traders introduced it to Europe’s ravenous palates for spices. Today, elaichi grows well in a wide range of climates, from Sri Lanka’s lush countryside to Guatemala’s foggy highlands.

Versatility in Cuisine

Beyond its colorful past, cardamom enchants with its diverse culinary applications. Its warm, zesty flavor adds complexity to savory and sweet recipes alike, from rich sweets to fragrant curries. It’s a main ingredient in celebratory sweets such as Swedish kardemummabullar in Scandinavia, and it scents rich, spicy coffees in the Middle East.

Medicinal Properties

In addition to its culinary uses, green cardamom has several medicinal properties. Traditional medicinal systems, like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, appreciate it for its capacity to promote digestive health, enhance respiratory health, and potentially even enhance cardiovascular health. Centuries of traditional knowledge is being confirmed by the ongoing scientific research on the healing potential of elaichi.

2024.05.17 12:40 garyvdh The Witch of Fern Island - My Detailed Review

OK so after over 100 hours in this game here is my (third) heavily edited review. I actually love this game, the graphics are great, and the game mechanics are actually overall pretty good. I am highly tempted to give this game a favourable review because I really, really do love it, but it's let down by a few big points that in the end just cripple the game a bit too much and I feel it's only fair to let people know the truth. But, actually don't let that stop you from enjoying the game. I would STRONGLY encourage you to buy this game and enjoy it anyway. First of all, the PROS:
(1) This games is gorgeous and looks great, and runs great/ fairly fast on my system.
(2) The artwork is stunning, and the world building is top notch. You will fall in love with this world.
(3) The story line is well developed and you can see that a lot of love and time and heart has been poured into this. So kudos to the development team.
(4) Abrill is a lovable character and her look and feel is just top notch. Her outfits and gorgeous and she feels and plays well and will appeal to all gamers. You will not resent the fact that you are limited to only one character choice (You cannot customise your character, but later on you will be able to customise her clothing).
(5) The depth and layers of the game are intricate and well woven, and you can see that the team have done a lot of research and background legwork to bring a depth to this game that is actually not seen in a lot of games.
(6) I also have to single out the map for special mention as it is really fun to explore the map and this must have taken hours to develop. The map is it's own character in this game. Really, well done on the depth of detail here.
But now here are the CONS that are unfortunately letting the game down.
(1) Firstly, when it comes to farming, a major complaint is the mouse sensitivity in the farming mechanic (I'm not actually sure how much you can adjust that through the interface). When you're trying to lay down your farming rows, and then plant your seed, your cursor jumps all over the place making it infuriatingly difficult to actually do your farming preparation. The farming mechanic is very clunky and unfriendly compared to say a game like Coral Island (which makes farming a breeze).
(2) Secondly, the cat (your familiar) is part of the story line of the game, and is supposed to appear at pivotal parts of the game to continue the discussion and advance the story line for you. But he just never appears when and where he is supposed to, and you are constantly running all over the place looking for him and trying to trigger his appearance so that you can advance the story line to the next level. Maybe the devs can look into this but there should be a way to trigger his appearance so that you can move the story along. This is why I cannot at this stage recommend the game until this is fixed. NEVERTHELESS, I was able to continue playing the game, despite this.
(3) Thirdly, in addition to the above comments players should be aware that the game is pleasant but a frustrating continuous grind to actually get anywhere. It is one long slog to get the resources you need to achieve anything in this game. And that is a tediously slow process. You may enjoy that and call it a lazy or relaxing game, but most games would find that frustrating and boring. There should be enough reward along the way for you to achieve significant progress during the day or at least have some good in game guidance as to what you are supposed to be doing and where you are supposed to be going. Now that's all well and good if that was coming from the Cat familiar who is supposed to be guiding you, but as mentioned above he is nowhere to be found. There is also no in game prompt to look up the compendium or to go and research spells or how to use recipes, etc. I found myself having to use youtube videos or websites to get guidance how to play the game, and of that there is very little good guidance. It should not be necessary to go to outside sources to play the game. I ended up using the WeMod cheat for help with this game, but to be honest it doesn't actually help that much with this game. It doesn't get you much further.
(4) Fourthly, some of the characters do look a bit strange or weird, I'm not sure if they were going for non-white character appearance to make the game more inclusive, but it just comes across as very strange in appearance, almost freakish as if they are glitching. Weird colour scheme.
(5) Fifth, there is no voice acting in this game, and I feel that is unfortunately a major let down for a game this gorgeous. I understand that it keeps the costs down, and this game is already really cheap, but in the end it just lets the game down. This just comes down to personal preference. I guess I was spoiled by games like My Time at Sandrock.
(6) Sixth, is kind of an extension of the grind complaint but when it comes to finding certain resources you will just search and search and never find the resources that you are looking for (some of which are only available in certain seasons), some of which don't appear to be available AT ALL in the game yet. Also it appears that if you mine certain resources too often, the game actually starts rewarding you less. I noticed this with the Astra realm, and with the Mineral resources. If you go back to them too often, you do not get the good stuff any more.
(7) The game still crashes fairly often and that is quite irritating. The game only saves when you go to sleep at the end of each day and that might be a bit off-putting to some people. Unfortunately, when that happens you lose all your progress for the day. And that can sometimes be quite a significant amount. I don't understand why these farming/cozy games have this weird save mechanic that only saves every so often instead of just allowing you to save whenever you want, in my opinion, it's really stupid and nonsensical. I checked my graphics drivers and system updates, but no luck. I actually had to stop playing the game on one particular PC because it just crashed every single day on that particular PC.
So if you are willing to put up with all of the above frustrations, then by all means you will definitely enjoy this game. it's cheap enough, so yes go ahead and buy it! If you stick with it, it is a fun game and you will derive enjoyment from it. My final advice is this. Do NOT avoid this game despite all of the above. Definitely check it out, because the price alone on steam makes it worth it. For all you Cozy Gamers in this thread, I feel like you will be missing out if you avoid this game.

2024.05.17 12:32 FunnyWay4369 A Symbiotic View of Life: We Have Never Been Individuals

The notion of the “biological individual” is crucial to studies of genetics, immunology, evolution, development, anatomy, and physiology. Each of these biological subdisciplines has a specific conception of individuality, which has historically provided conceptual contexts for integrating newly acquired data. During the past decade, nucleic acid analysis, especially genomic sequencing and high-throughput RNA techniques, has challenged each of these disciplinary definitions by finding significant interactions of animals and plants with symbiotic microorganisms that disrupt the boundaries that heretofore had characterized the biological individual. Animals cannot be considered individuals by anatomical or physiological criteria because a diversity of symbionts are both present and functional in completing metabolic pathways and serving other physiological functions. Similarly, these new studies have shown that animal development is incomplete without symbionts. Symbionts also constitute a second mode of genetic inheritance, providing selectable genetic variation for natural selection. The immune system also develops, in part, in dialogue with symbionts and thereby functions as a mechanism for integrating microbes into the animal-cell community. Recognizing the “holobiont”—the multicellular eukaryote plus its colonies of persistent symbionts—as a critically important unit of anatomy, development, physiology, immunology, and evolution opens up new investigative avenues and conceptually challenges the ways in which the biological subdisciplines have heretofore characterized living entities.
Our theories about nature are highly constrained by what our technologies enable us to observe. But theory and technology act on each other reciprocally: we construct those technologies that we think are important for examining a particular perspective of nature. The development of the microscope, for example, revealed the hitherto invisible microbial world of bacteria, protists, and fungi; and the descendants of that instrument further allowed the discovery of subcellular organelles, viruses, and macromolecules. New technologies such as polymerase chain reaction, high-throughput RNA analysis, and next generation sequencing continue to dramatically transform our conceptions of the planet's biosphere. They have not only revealed a microbial world of much deeper diversity than previously imagined, but also a world of complex and intermingled relationships—not only among microbes, but also between microscopic and macroscopic life (Gordon 2012). These discoveries have profoundly challenged the generally accepted view of “individuals.” Symbiosis is becoming a core principle of contemporary biology, and it is replacing an essentialist conception of “individuality” with a conception congruent with the larger systems approach now pushing the life sciences in diverse directions. These findings lead us into directions that transcend the self/nonself, subject/object dichotomies that have characterized Western thought.
And it is significant. For animals, as well as plants, there have never been individuals. This new paradigm for biology asks new questions and seeks new relationships among the different living entities on Earth. We are all lichens.

2024.05.17 12:05 Extension-Set8316 Education for All: The Push for Universal Schooling in 19th Century America

The 19th century was a period of profound transformation for American education. Amid the sweeping changes of the Industrial Revolution, the United States saw a fundamental shift from a loosely connected system of local, often voluntary schooling to a more standardized, state-supported public education system. This evolution was driven by a combination of social, economic, and political forces that underscored the necessity of education for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
Early 19th Century: The Landscape of Education
In the early 1800s, education in the United States was largely decentralized. Rural areas relied on one-room schoolhouses where a single teacher would instruct students of varying ages and grades in a single room. These schools were often funded by local communities and were highly dependent on local resources and values. Education was not compulsory, and attendance was often dictated by agricultural cycles, with children needed at home during planting and harvest seasons.
The Push for Public Education
The Industrial Revolution brought about significant societal changes that highlighted the need for a more educated populace. As America transitioned from an agrarian society to an industrial one, the burgeoning cities faced numerous challenges, including poverty, crime, overcrowding, and disease. Education reformers argued that a publicly funded education system was essential for addressing these issues by providing a means for social mobility and preparing children for the demands of a rapidly industrializing economy.
Horace Mann and the Common School Movement
One of the most influential figures in the push for universal schooling was Horace Mann, often referred to as the "Father of the Common School Movement." As the Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, Mann championed the idea that education should be free, non-sectarian, and universally accessible. He believed that public education was a fundamental right and a cornerstone of a democratic society. Mann's advocacy led to the establishment of the first state-funded public schools in Massachusetts and inspired similar reforms in other states.
Expansion of Public Education
By the mid-19th century, the idea of publicly funded education began to gain traction across the United States. States like Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois passed laws mandating free public education funded by state taxes. The establishment of public high schools in cities like Boston also marked significant progress. These schools aimed to provide a more advanced education to prepare students for the demands of the industrial economy.
The push for public education was not without its challenges. Resistance came from various quarters, including those who believed that education should remain a private or religious responsibility. However, the benefits of an educated populace, particularly in an industrializing society, gradually won over many sceptics.
Education for Women and Minorities
The latter half of the 19th century also saw significant strides in education for women and minorities. Prior to this period, educational opportunities for women were limited. However, the founding of institutions such as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1837 and Vassar College in 1865 marked the beginning of greater access to higher education for women. These institutions not only provided women with educational opportunities but also played a crucial role in the broader movement for women's rights.
The Impact of Industrialization
The rapid industrialization of the United States necessitated a more educated workforce. Public schools began to incorporate more practical subjects into their curricula, such as vocational training and technical skills, to prepare students for the demands of industrial jobs. This shift was part of a broader trend toward a more utilitarian approach to education, aimed at producing a skilled labour force capable of sustaining economic growth and innovation.
Progressive Era Reforms
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the rise of the Progressive Education Movement, which sought to address the limitations of the traditional education system. Progressives argued for a more child-centred approach to education, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and experiential learning. This period also saw the expansion of public high schools and the introduction of compulsory education laws, which required children to attend school until a certain age, thereby ensuring that education was truly universal.
Conclusion
Absolutely, the 19th century indeed saw a profound transformation in education across the United States. The push for universal schooling was not just about imparting knowledge; it was a societal and moral imperative driven by the recognition that education was fundamental to individual opportunity and national progress.
Social reformers like Horace Mann in Massachusetts and Henry Barnard in Connecticut were instrumental in advocating for the establishment of public schools and the professionalization of teaching. They argued that education was not just a privilege for the wealthy but a right for all citizens, essential for the functioning of a democratic society.
Moreover, as the nation underwent rapid industrialization and urbanization, there was a growing recognition of the need for an educated workforce capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly complex economy. This led to the expansion of public schooling and the development of a curriculum focused on practical skills alongside traditional academic subjects.
However, it's crucial to acknowledge that these advancements were not without their challenges and contradictions. Despite the rhetoric of equality, educational opportunities were often stratified along lines of race, class, and gender. African Americans, Native Americans, and other marginalized groups faced systemic discrimination and limited access to schooling. Women were often relegated to inferior educational opportunities compared to men, with limited access to higher education and professional opportunities.
Nonetheless, the reforms of the 19th century laid the groundwork for progress in the following decades. The fight for educational equity and inclusion has been ongoing, with significant strides made through movements like desegregation, Title IX, and special education legislation.
Today, the legacy of 19th-century educational reforms continues to shape the American education system. While challenges persist, such as disparities in funding and resources, there is a continued commitment to the principle that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance. It's a testament to the enduring importance of ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to fulfill their potential and contribute to society.

Chapter 21: Reborn
Gribble sitting alongside his grandfather, Gorp, at a serene lake nestled in the heart of a lush forest. The gentle lapping of the water against the shore and the melodic chirping of birds create a peaceful atmosphere. Gribble's small, green hands grip a fishing rod, his eyes fixed on the unmoving line, frustration etched across his youthful face as time passes without a single catch. The sun's warm rays dance upon the lake's surface, casting a golden glow on the tranquil scene, yet Gribble remains oblivious to the beauty surrounding him, consumed by his growing impatience.
Gorp, a wise and patient goblin with a wrinkled face and kind, knowing eyes, notices his grandson's mounting frustration and offers a reassuring smile. With a gentle touch, Gorp places his weathered hand on Gribble's shoulder, his presence alone seeming to calm the young goblin's restless spirit. In a voice filled with wisdom and understanding, Gorp imparts a profound piece of advice that will forever shape Gribble's perspective: "Patience, my dear Gribble, is the bridge to success; when coupled with an unwavering belief in oneself, it becomes an unstoppable force, capable of overcoming even the most daunting of challenges."
As these words resonate deep within Gribble's mind, the peaceful scene begins to fade, the colors blurring and the sounds growing distant. The harsh reality of the present situation comes crashing back, and Gribble finds himself torn from the comforting memory, thrust once more into the dangerous reality of the cave and the looming threat of the Thundercat
Gribble lies on the cold, hard ground of the cave, his small body battered and bruised from the Thundercat's relentless assault. The air is thick with the scent of blood and the tang of fear, as Gribble struggles to catch his breath, each inhalation sending shockwaves of pain through his weakened frame. The Thundercat looms over him, its massive form casting a sinister shadow across the cavern floor, its electric blue fur crackling with barely contained energy. The creature's eyes gleam with a predatory hunger, its gaze fixed upon the helpless goblin, as if savoring the moment before delivering the final, fatal blow.
Gribble's heart races, his pulse pounding in his ears like a frantic drum, as he stares into the face of death itself. The Thundercat's hot breath washes over him, carrying with it the stench of primal ferocity and unbridled power. Gribble's own breath comes in short, desperate gasps, his lungs burning with the effort of drawing in the damp, musty air of the cave. The cold tendrils of fear wrap around his soul, threatening to suffocate him with their icy grip, as he confronts the terrifying realization that his life hangs in the balance, dependent upon the whims of the savage creature that towers above him.
In this moment of absolute horror, Gribble's mind races, desperately searching for a way out, for some glimmer of hope amidst the overwhelming darkness. He knows that he must act quickly, that hesitation will surely spell his doom, but his body feels leaden, weighed down by the burden of his injuries and the paralyzing fear that grips his heart.
In a last-ditch effort to save himself from the Thundercat's impending attack, Gribble musters the remnants of his strength, drawing upon the very last reserves of his power. He calls out to the earth, seeking to summon the dormant life that lies beneath the cave floor, hoping against hope that his earth vine powers will answer his desperate plea. Gribble's mind races as he focuses all of his energy on this single, crucial task, his brow furrowed in concentration, his eyes squeezed shut as he wills the vines to burst forth from the unyielding ground.
The thick green vine is sluggish in its movements, its progress hindered by the unnatural environment of the cave, but still, it inches forward, guided by Gribble's unwavering determination.
Gribble's heart leaps with a sudden surge of hope as he watches the vine snake its way towards the Thundercat, a small, defiant spark igniting within his chest. He knows that this is his only chance, that the success of his plan hinges upon the strength and speed of the vine, and he pours every last ounce of his will into the endeavor. The vine quivers and strains, as if struggling against an invisible barrier, but Gribble refuses to yield, his mind locked in a silent battle of wills with the very earth itself.
As Gribble watches the vine's sluggish progress, a sudden flash of inspiration illuminates his mind, and a daring plan takes shape. With renewed focus and determination, he directs the vine's growth, shaping and molding it with his earth magic, willing it to take on a new, more deadly form. Slowly, the tender green tendril begins to elongate and narrow, its tip sharpening into a wicked point, until it resembles a crude but effective spear, poised to strike at the heart of the Thundercat.
Gribble's eyes narrow as he concentrates on the newly-formed vine spear, his body trembling with the effort of maintaining his mental grip on the volatile plant matter. The spear quivers in the air, its tip aimed squarely at the Thundercat's broad, muscular chest, as if seeking out the creature's vital organs with a hunter's precision. Gribble's breathing grows shallow and rapid, his heart pounding against his ribcage as he prepares to unleash the improvised weapon, knowing that this single strike may well determine the outcome of the battle, and perhaps, the very course of his life.
With a final, desperate surge of energy, Gribble thrusts his hand forward, his fingers splayed wide as he channels every last ounce of his power into the vine spear. Time seems to slow to a crawl as Gribble watches the spear's progress, his heart in his throat, his eyes wide with a mixture of hope and fear, as he silently prays for the success of his gambit
The vine spear’s sharpened tip finding its mark with a sickening thud as it pierces the Thundercat's muscular chest. The creature lets out a deafening roar of pain and surprise, its voice reverberating through the cave like a clap of thunder, as it staggers backward, its electric blue fur standing on end. The Thundercat's eyes widen in shock and disbelief, its gaze fixed upon the slender green tendril that protrudes from its body, as if struggling to comprehend the reality of its own vulnerability.
Gribble watches in stunned amazement as the mighty Thundercat, the very embodiment of primal power and ferocity, begins to falter, its movements growing sluggish and uncoordinated. The creature's massive frame shudders and convulses, its muscles rippling beneath its fur as it fights to remove the vine. The Thundercat's breaths come in short, ragged gasps, its eyes growing dim and unfocused as the life slowly drains from its body, until at last, it collapses to the ground, a final, shuddering sigh escaping its lips.
The cave falls silent, the only sound the steady patter of the rain outside and Gribble's own labored breathing, as he struggles to come to terms with the magnitude of his victory. He stares at the Thundercat's lifeless form, scarcely daring to believe that he, a small, unassuming goblin, could have felled such a formidable beast. A mixture of relief and exhaustion washes over Gribble, his limbs trembling with the aftershocks of the intense battle, as he slowly begins to process the implications of his triumph.
Gribble crawls towards the fallen Thundercat, his movements slow and painful, each breath sending a fresh wave of agony through his battered body. As he nears the creature's lifeless form, an inexplicable urge takes hold of him, a primal desire that he can neither explain nor resist. Before he can question the impulse, Gribble finds himself drawn to the Thundercat's still-warm chest, his hands moving of their own accord as they seek out the beast's most vital organ.
With trembling fingers, Gribble carefully parts the Thundercat's thick fur, revealing the smooth, blue skin beneath. He hesitates for a moment, his mind reeling at the thought of what he is about to do, but the compulsion proves too strong to ignore. With a deep breath and a quick, decisive movement, Gribble plunges his hand into the Thundercat's chest, his fingers closing around the creature's still-beating heart. The organ pulses in his grasp, its rhythm slowing as he carefully extracts it from the Thundercat's body, a faint crackle of residual electricity dancing across its surface.
Gribble brings the heart to his lips, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and anticipation, as he contemplates the enormity of the act he is about to commit. The coppery scent of blood fills his nostrils, mingling with the damp, earthy smell of the cave, as he parts his lips and takes a tentative bite of the Thundercat's essence. The taste is overwhelming, a flood of rich, primal flavors that dance upon his tongue, setting his senses alight with a rush of power and vitality unlike anything he has ever experienced. The world narrows to a single, focus point, as if the universe itself is holding its breath, waiting to see what awestriking abilities Gribble will gain from this bold act of consumption.
As Gribble swallows the last morsel of the Thundercat's heart, an electrifying surge of power courses through his veins, setting every nerve ending alight with a tingling, almost painful sensation. The goblin's small frame begins to tremble and convulse, his muscles twitching and spasming as the creature's essence merges with his own life force. Gribble gasps as he feels his body start to change, subtle shifts taking place throughout his musculature and skeleton that quickly escalate into all-consuming physical transformations as the potent powers from the heart take hold.
Gribble's once small, wiry muscles begin to bulge and swell, expanding with newfound strength and vitality, as if the Thundercat's raw power is being transmuted directly into his own cells and sinews. His scrawny limbs thicken and lengthen, the sudden growth of his body accompanied by shooting pains and cramps, as he undergoes an accelerated metamorphosis. The goblin's stature increases rapidly, his height multiplying at an astonishing rate, until he towers over his former self, a new, imposing figure of raw power and potential.
But the changes do not stop with his musculature alone. Gribble's senses sharpen to a degree he would never have thought possible, his eyes able to penetrate the thick darkness of the cave without hindrance, every detail of his surroundings now clear and sharp as if bathed in the bright light of day. The goblin's ears twitch and thrum with a newfound sensitivity, able to pick up the tiniest sounds and vibrations from the depths of the cave. Most astonishing of all, sparks of brilliant blue electricity emerge through the hairs on Gribble's arms, dancing and pulsing with a life force that both fascinates and terrifies him. He has been reborn, a product of the powers that now surge within, his body and mind irrevocably altered by the essence of the Thundercat.
As the initial shock of the transformation begins to subside, Gribble becomes aware of a soothing warmth spreading throughout his body, a sensation that stands in stark contrast to the pain and exhaustion that had plagued him mere moments before. The goblin looks down at his battered and bruised form, his eyes widening in astonishment as he watches the myriad wounds and gashes that mar his skin begin to knit together before his very eyes, the flesh mending itself at an impossible rate.
Deep lacerations seal shut, leaving behind only faint, silvery scars that quickly fade into nothingness, as if erased by an unseen hand. Ugly purple bruises that had blossomed across Gribble's body, testaments to the savage beating he had endured at the claws and fangs of the Thundercat, now rapidly diminish in size and color, until they vanish entirely, leaving his skin unmarked and pristine. Even the bone-deep aches and pains that had settled into Gribble's joints and muscles dissipate, replaced by a newfound sense of strength and vitality that courses through his veins like liquid fire.
As the healing process nears its completion, Gribble slowly rises to his feet, marveling at the ease with which he can now move, his body no longer weighed down by the burdens of injury and fatigue. He flexes his fingers experimentally, feeling the raw power that thrums just beneath the surface of his skin, a barely contained energy that whispers tantalizing of limitless potential. A sense of invincibility washes over the goblin, the knowledge that he has not only survived the brutal encounter with the Thundercat but emerged stronger and more powerful than ever before. Gribble's gaze hardens with a newfound sense of purpose, steadied by the certainty that he can now overcome any obstacle that dares to stand in his path.
Even as Gribble revels in the rush of power and the exhilaration of his miraculous recovery, a faint shadow begins to creep across the edges of his consciousness, an unsettling presence that lurks just beyond the reach of his newfound senses. It is a darkness that seems to emanate from deep within his own being, a nebulous entity that tugs at the corner of his thoughts, whispering of hidden costs and unspoken dangers.
The goblin tries to shake off the growing sense of unease, pushing the troubling thoughts aside as he focuses instead on the incredible changes that have taken place within his body, marveling at the raw strength and vitality that now course through his veins. Yet, even as he seeks to bask in the glow of his transformation, the darkness persists, hovering at the edge of his awareness like a silent, watchful specter.
As Gribble moves through the cave, his steps imbued with newfound purpose and power, he cannot escape the nagging feeling that something fundamental has shifted within him, a subtle alteration that goes beyond the physical changes he has undergone. It is as if the essence of the Thundercat, now intertwined with his own lifeforce, has brought with it a touch of something primal and untamed, a wildness that threatens to consume him from within. The goblin's heart begins to race, a sense of trepidation rising in his chest as he ponders the implications of this strange, unsettling presence, wondering what price he may ultimately pay for the powers he has so eagerly embraced.
Driven by an instinctive need to escape the confines of the cave and the lingering presence of the fallen Thundercat, Gribble makes his way towards the entrance, his steps steady and purposeful, imbued with a newfound sense of strength and determination. As he nears the mouth of the cave, the sound of the pouring rain grows louder, the steady patter of droplets against stone echoing through the cavernous space like a ghostly drumbeat.
Gribble steps out into the downpour, his body immediately assaulted by the cold, stinging droplets that fall from the sky in an unrelenting torrent. The water sluices over his skin, running in rivulets through his hair and down his face, yet the goblin barely registers the sensation, his body thrumming with the power of the Thundercat, the electricity that courses through his veins keeping him warm and insulated against the chill of the rain.
He tilts his face upwards, his eyes closed as he allows the water to wash over him, a silent, almost meditative gesture that speaks of a desperate need for cleansing and renewal. The rain beats down upon Gribble's body, as if seeking to purge him of the darkness that has taken root within his soul, to wash away the lingering traces of the Thundercat's essence that now mingle with his own. Yet, even as the water pours over him in an unending stream, the goblin knows that some stains are too deep to be cleansed by mere rain alone, that the changes that have been wrought within him are irrevocable and permanent.
As Gribble stands there in the pouring rain, he catches a glimpse of his reflection in a nearby puddle, the image distorted and rippling with each falling droplet. The face that stares back at him is at once familiar and utterly alien, a strange amalgamation of the goblin he once was and the creature he has become. Gone is the scrawny, unassuming figure that had entered the cave, replaced now by a being of raw power and untamed potential.
Gribble's once wiry frame is now corded with muscle, his body honed and sculpted by the Thundercat's essence, every sinew and fiber imbued with a strength that defies belief. His eyes, once a dull, unremarkable shade, now glint with a predatory intensity, the pupils narrowed to vertical slits that seem to pierce the very darkness itself. The goblin's skin, too, has undergone a transformation, the surface now alive with tiny bolts of blue electricity that dance and crackle with each movement, a testament to the power that flows through his veins.
As he stares at his altered reflection, Gribble is struck by the realization that he is no longer the same goblin he was before, that the experiences he has undergone and the powers he has absorbed have changed him in ways that go far beyond the physical. He senses a new hardness within himself, a steely resolve that was absent before, tempered by the trials he has faced and the darkness he has embraced. The goblin knows that he has crossed a threshold, stepped into a realm of power and potential that few of his kind have ever dared to tread, and that there can be no turning back from the path he has chosen.
As the initial rush of adrenaline and euphoria begins to fade, Gribble is struck by a profound and unsettling realization, a truth that settles over him like a leaden weight upon his soul. The powers he now possesses, the incredible abilities granted to him by the consumption of the Thundercat's heart, have come at a terrible cost, a price that he is only now beginning to comprehend.
Gribble senses that a part of himself has been lost, consumed by the very darkness that now resides within him, a fundamental piece of his being that has been forever altered by the merging of his essence with that of the Thundercat. It is as if a shadow has fallen over his spirit, a veil of darkness that threatens to engulf the very core of his identity, to erode the values and beliefs that once defined him.
The goblin's mind reels as he ponders the implications of this realization, the knowledge that he has willingly embraced a power that may ultimately consume him, body and soul. He wonders what challenges lie ahead, what trials he will face as he navigates this new and uncharted realm of existence, and whether the strength he has gained will be enough to see him through the darkness that surely awaits.
As Gribble stands there in the pouring rain, his body thrumming with power, his mind haunted by the specter of an uncertain future, he knows that he has set foot upon a path from which there can be no retreat. The goblin steels himself, his jaw set with grim determination, as he prepares to embark upon a journey that will test the very limits of his newfound abilities, and perhaps, the very essence of his being. With a final, lingering glance at the cave that has borne witness to his transformation, Gribble turns his face to the storm and steps forward into the unknown, ready to embrace the challenges and dangers that lie ahead.

2024.05.17 11:28 Vilx- Fittonia in dire times - but appearance doesn't match anything I've been able to find.

Fittonia in dire times - but appearance doesn't match anything I've been able to find.
Here's a picture, maybe that's enough:
Current state of affairs
But if more information is needed, be warned - I'm a software developer by trade, so here comes excessive debug information!
The plant is a fittonia - or so I think. I got it at Christmas 2022 as a gift to my daughter. It was just a cute little terrarium without any information what's in there. Just that you hardly need to do anything to it - water it a couple times per year and you're done!
It never seemed very happy - the leaves were always curling - but for almost a year it managed at least to survive. Then at the end of last year it started looking decidedly worse. In January I posted a question at Gardening Stackexchange and got the response that it's been overwatered and needs more light. I also should cut off some of it. This is how it looked back then:
Back in January
I'll admit that I didn't gather the courage to start snipping off leaves, but the overwatering argument turned out to be right. Due to a miscommunication between me and my daughter we had both watered it. Oops. I left it open for a few days to dry out.
That however didn't seem to do anything. I didn't want to risk leaving it open for any more than that because apparently fittonias need a very humid air, yet here it is anything but. And there really isn't anything I can do about the light (more on that below).
So last week I finally took the plunge and snipped off all leaves and stems that seemed rotten. The result is in the first picture. Not quite one third off, but also not touching the glass anymore. I also added a bit of water, because the soil seemed dry again. Not too much though - I just wanted to see if there's a reaction at all.
Nope. Still nothing. So now I'm trying my luck here.
What puzzles me is the discoloring of the leaves - this isn't something I've been able to find on the Internet. Fittonias can have droopy leaves, or dried up and shriveled leaves, or rotting leaves - but in no pictures have they been discolored like this! In addition, they seem dry to the touch, yet they're still firm, don't fall off or shrivel.
The plant seems to be in a coma, rather than dead.
Some more info:
I live in Riga, Latvia, so the air isn't desert-dry, but not really rainforest-humid either. Especially in the winter it can get pretty dry.
The plant lives on a south-facing windowsill, however between it and the sun is still a junk-filled balcony, another window, and a large chestnut tree outside. So it's mostly in a shade, yet still bright. In addition I've pointed a 6000K 1100lm lamp at it, which is kept on most of the time (that would be around 16h/day or so). Here's what that looks like (note it's a sunny day outside and you can see that a bit):
Daily life
Another curious detail that I noticed just today is that one of the pale leaves ACTUALLY has a green part - but that's the part that's obscured by other leaves! Here, take a look:
Why green THERE????
This runs counter to my belief so far that plants are green where the sun shines, yet become pale/white where the sun don't shine.
I'm also afraid to take the whole thing apart because I'm afraid of damaging the roots and I doubt I'd be able to put it back together. I could maybe replant it in a bigger pot, but without the glass lid I'm afraid the air will be too dry for it.
Any ideas what's going on here? Is it too late already, or maybe is there still hope for Terry?

2024.05.17 10:43 ughthrowawaybitch i was molested by a 15 year old when i was 8.

I didn't know what happened to me then, but I knew I did not like it. it was a game of hide and seek, and this guy was the son of my mom's best friend. we were both hiding in a duct. I didn't know he was there as it was dark and i couldn't quite tell who it was because he also had a twin brother. he touched me all over and i just kept my hands planted on the ground firmly because I didn't know what to do. he was sniffing me, and it felt insanely disgusting. he tried to take my palm and opened his mouth. i remember this part well because I ran away and got caught. i went home. I tried to think about it. i couldn't. all I knew was that it wasn't anything good. mom and i went to their house often. all I could do while I was there was try to sit still while his twin brother tried to make me play board games with them. the twin didn't know what his brother had done. I never told mom I didn't like going to that house. i endured it for a year until we had to move house. I had a dream about it today. I thought I should write it down somewhere in hopes that my subconscious gets rid of it.

2024.05.17 10:32 Resident1567899 The Quran can't be the Word of God. Islam's version of the Problem of the Trinity

Introduction
Muslims believe the Quran, the holy book of Islam itself is not just a religious book for guidance but also the literal word of god i.e. Allah itself. In everyday conversations, you will hear Muslims call it Kalamullah (Word of God), not in the Christian sense where the Word is Jesus and God but actual sayings, sentences, and words uttered by god himself and compiled into a single book by human hands. While Muslims are proud of their holy book being the literal words of god sent down to all of mankind, there are a few problems with that mainly concerning Islam's doctrinal theology and its core beliefs.
Disclaimer and Notes
Now, before I start, a disclaimer. The issue of the Quran being god's word or not has been one of the most pretentious and divided issues in the Muslim community. Because of this issue, multiple sects (considered deviant and heretical today) popped up in the early years of Islam's history leading to multiple debates, condemnations, and even inquisitions for those that were against the majority-held view in history. So to make it easy considering Islam has tons of historical sects, all of whom held widely different views than modern-day Islam when it comes to the Quran's states as the word of god (or not), this post is aimed at Ashari, Maturidi and Ahlul Hadith/Athari aqeedah sects who make up the majority of Muslims today, collectively considered to be under the umbrella of Ahlul Sunnah Wal Jema'ah (Literally meaning "The People of the Prophet's Tradition and Consensus" or to make it easier to understand "The Followers of the Prophet's Teachings and the Righteous Community"). This term is commonly understood in Islam as those who follow the true and righteous path in Islam which according to the hadiths, out of 73 deviant sects, only 1 (the above I already mention) will be on the correct spiritual path.
Why do I say this problem is akin to the Trinity problem in Christianity? Both are key problems that form the basis of the entire religion, not just for an individual believer but also for the scholars who dabble in religious sciences. Both the Quran and Trinity make up the core fundamental teachings upon which other teachings are established and expanded further. Without these key concepts, the entire premise of both religions (Islam and Christianity) would fall apart within a matter of seconds. Both issues are also hotly debated even to this day. As I mentioned before, the issue of the Quran's creation or non-creation was an important issue that occupied the minds of early-century Muslim scholars and thinkers, to the point schisms and breakaways from the main branch started to emerge. The same thing happened in Christianity with the Trinity which led to excommunication, the Arian controversy, and multiple individual distinct sects, all of whom have a different understanding of what the Trinity is.
Last, I would also like to mention that considering the Trinity has been severely criticized by non-Christians alike as proof of Christianity's falsehood and internal contradictions, then the same should be said with Islam's problem of the Quran's status. However, unlike in Islam, Christianity continued to debate up to the present day and even adopted Greek philosophical concepts to better explain away the Trinity and the relationship between each Divine Person of the Trinity. In Islam, the opposite occurred. Those who used Greek philosophy and rhetoric were condemned as either falling into falsehood or corrupting the religion by introducing pagan concepts. Ironically, the most condemned bunch of the Muslim sects I'll talk about below, the Mutazilites were the ones who most used philosophy which led to their rejection of the Quran's non-createdness.
Due to the decline of the Mutazilite sect, the rise of more conservative movements, and the criticism of Aristotelian philosophical ideas by Al-Ghazali (Note, he wasn't against philosophy, he was against philosophical ideas that went against Islam like the eternity of the world and denying bodily resurrection in the afterlife), theological discussions and debates surrounding the question faded away. Even now, most Muslims consider the issue "solved" and simply adopt one of the three main positions. Unsurprisingly, while the West and Christianity continued adopting new ideas, this means the Muslim positions lacked much substance and arguments seen in Christianity with Greek and Neo-Platonist ideas which in turn, means there are tons of problems with their positions, (which is the whole point of the post)
Now, with that out of the way, let's begin.
How Have Muslims Historically Responded to this Problem?
There are two answers to the question of the Quran's status. One, to affirm that it is the literal word of god from Allah Himself which existed with him since eternity or to affirm it is a created being just like every other creature and human planet earth. The second view doesn't mean that the Quran is simply the work of man, quite the opposite. Rather, it posits that the Quran still holds religious significance as Islam's holy book and is still the Word of God but it was created at a later time by God, not existing eternally with god before the creation of everything. In the second view, the Quran still holds religious significance for praying, guidance, and the basis for Islam, only that it is of a lower status than god himself, being a creation of god that was created at a certain time.
The second view is considered invalid and rejected by all major sects of Islam in the modern era (Ashari, Maturidi, Athari) as a heretical belief that the Mutazilites (The Withdrawers) held. I'm not going to go into who they are, what is their history, or what are their beliefs (you can google it yourself). Just know these are the guys who believe the Quran was a creation of god and were condemned by pretty much every Islamic group and sect from their beginning all the way up to the present modern day. This is one the only issues where every Islamic sect agrees with each other in condemning this belief, be it Ashari, Maturidi, or Athari. Thus, the second option then is 100% of the table for most Muslims, unless they want to affirm holding beliefs of a heretical group that died out 1000 years ago. I don't think any Muslim will dare to affirm Mutazilite beliefs for fear of ridicule and committing major sins, so there's not much here to discuss. For the sake of brevity, I will address the second view since the one even Muslims will deny and reject. After that, I'll address the Second View.
The Second View
But for the sake of argument, I'll assume some rare brave Mutazilite Muslim wants to give it a try. Now, here are some of my questions for you. If the Quran is a creation of god and not the literal Word of God before time immemorial, what is the Quran's relationship with god? You believe these are still words from Allah that help mankind to arrive at the truth and Islam yet at the same you also believe that these were created at a time later than god. How can something that is both speech from god and also created by god himself exist simultaneously at the same time? Anything that is created at a later time means it's a creation, a contingent object that depends on an external creator. It can't be part of god because god is eternal, atemporal, necessary, and independent of everything and anything. If it were god or contained some part of god inside of it, then this is no different than Jesus and the Son of God in Christianity where it contains both a human and godly nature, so does that mean you now believe the Quran to be both god and creation? Just like the Christians who you condemn as a false corrupted religion? This is the First Problem you must face, that be affirming it is both from god and not god, you are throwing yourself into the same pit as Christianity with a dual nature which is already a false religion. I like to call people who affirm this stance "Dualists".
The Second Problem "dualists" face is that this nullifies the Quran's honorific status in Islam, which goes against what the majority of the Muslim world believes in. For Dualists, what is the Quran's honorific and spiritual status in Islam now? We've all seen Muslim riots and protests against the burning or stepping on the Quran by non-Muslims around the world. A man burns or rips up the Quran and the entire Muslim world goes into a frenzy. In Islam, simply placing the Quran on the floor is considered disrespectful and sinful. In the majority of sects today, the Quran must be honored and respected 24/7 partly due to the fact Muslims believe it to be the literal Word. But for Dualists, what is your stance and reason for continuing to respect the Quran? Considering you no longer believe the Quran to be the actual Word, can non-Muslims now vandalize, rip apart, step on, or place the Quran on the floor?? Would you have any problem with it? It's no longer the Word itself but a creation of god. Sure, you might ask others to "respect other religions and beliefs" but aside from this, what else do you have?? Is simply putting a religious book on the floor disrespecting other religions? What makes your holy book now any different from the Jewish and Christian perspectives on their religious books? They don't go into a frenzy every time Bibles are burned or disrespected. Will you do the same thing?
The Third Problem since it's a created thing, wouldn't this also mean that at some point in the future, the Quran no longer exists? That the Quran is finite and will at some point cease to exist? Wouldn't this mean at some point, Islam itself becomes useless because the number one source for everything, the Quran no longer exists? The Quran will cease to exist if it were created, when it happens, will the meaning of the verses and Muslim understanding built up over the centuries also cease to exist? Tafsirs, Fiqh, and Tajwid all suddenly become useless and void of any meaning because the backbone of Islam, the Quran no longer exists. What about the Muslim understanding of what Allah is? Isn't that detrimental should the Quran cease to exist? The best outcome is that Muslims still retain the knowledge but Islam becomes spineless without a religious book and the worst outcome is the complete disintegration of Islam as everything built upon the Quran, now becomes useless. It would mean the complete death of Islam as a major Abrahamic religion.
Next, what about during the Hour, when everything in the heavens and on the Earth will be destroyed and no longer exist? Muslims believe that when the Hour arrives, everything will be destroyed. Every human, child, animal, plant, planet, universe, devil, and angel will die inevitably. Only god remains. Due to this, according to Dualists, will the Quran experience the same fate? All of its verses and Surahs destroyed by god himself. Now I know Muslims, even those of other sects believe the Quran will disappear bit by bit before the Hour as a sign of the impending doom and apocalypse. However, other Muslims believe that yes, the Quran will disappear but the verses themselves remain preserved with god i.e. Allah since these are the literal words of god himself. In a sense, the verses suddenly don't exist, they return back to god.
TLDR, the Dualist Mutazilite view implies a contradiction where the Quran is both God and not God at the same time, it nullifies the Quran's holy status and the divine meaning of the verses, and last, it means the Quran is finite and will cease to exist at some point in the future.
Now, onto the Ashari, Maturidi and Athari sects,
The First View (The Majority)
These three are the most prominent and widely held doctrinal sects in the current Muslim population. I will be splitting the next sections into two sections, Ashari-Maturidi (since both are quite similar and considered a single unified school of thought by Muslim scholars) and the Athari school.
Ashari-Maturidi
The Asharis and Maturidis believe the Quran and its verses to be the literal Word of God itself, with Allah since eternity before time however they believe the book form of the Quran (mushaf), the one which every Muslim holds and reads is of man-made origin. In other words, the verses, sentences, letters, and meaning of the text are from god himself while the cover, paper, ink, writing, and publishing are from mankind. The Ash'ari creed makes a point of difference between the content of the Quran and the physical manifestation of it (in speech or as pages in a book).
The Main Problem with this argument as said by Atharis and Mutazilites is that this strips the Quran of its spiritual and holy essence in Islam. If the real divine aspect of the Quran that came from god itself are the verses and meaning of it only, then should we burn every last Quran in the world, it wouldn't be a problem. After all, the divine part still exists as it is from and with god himself, only the earthly worldly portions of it get destroyed. Why's that a problem? I mean what is the problem spiritually concerning Islam's doctrinal theology itself? What's the problem with destroying the cover or vandalizing the writing of it? It's not from god, it's man-made. The effect of this would be enormous.
This means now non-Muslims and Islamaphobes can now burn, rip, tear apart, step on, vandalize, and desecrate the Quran because they are only destroying the part that is not divine. Would Asharis or Maturidis agree to this? Is now destroying the Quran not a major sin but actually allowed? The true essence of the Quran i.e. the part that is truly divine remains preserved and exists since humans were created and will continue to exist long after everything has died and withered away. The vandalization and desecration of it does not affect the Quran because the true divine verses and meaning remain preserved. This problem is similar to the Second Problem with the Mutazilite belief, it nullifies and strips away the Quran's holy status and honorific place among the Muslim community. If it isn't truly god's divine word, what's the problem if it gets destroyed, wet, or burned?
Heck, I've heard this same argument from other sects, claiming and accusing the Ashari are just Mutazilites in disguise because their main stance of the Quran's identity revolves back to the Mutazilite position where the Quran is a creation of god. One of the main accusations against the Ashari sect is that it's just a rehash version of Mutazilite or Jahmiyyah theology (I don't have time to explain what this is right now, better if you look it up yourselves) due to similarities in doctrine and also because Imam Ashari, the founder was once a Mutazilite himself (not helping the Ashari case) but Asharis claim he renounced all Mutazilite theology and returned back to the true correct path. In this case, should the objection above against the Ashari-Maturidi position succeed, then it would help critics a lot against Asharism.
The Second Problem with holding the Ashari position is that this resembles the idolatry of Hinduism and Paganism or at least, is slipping into idolatry practice. If they claim the Speech of God is contained within the letters, pages, and ink of the Mushaf (the Quran's Uthmanic standardized codex), then how dare they believe the actions of humans can absorb and physicalize the Sacred Divine Speech of God, for Muslims believe god can never be limited by His creatures. This would also mean they believe the ink written on the Quran's pages is a physical intermediary, designed to encapsulate the Speech of God into a physical form, no different than the idols of Hindus and Pagans who believe their idols to be an intermediary or a worldly representation of the True Divine Nature.
Hindus don't claim they worship idols, rather they believe them to be ways to spiritually connect with the divine as a locus for prayer just like how Muslims consider the Kaaba as the direction for prayer, not an idol for worship or as a reminder for believers of the faith similar to how a photo of a spiritual leader is a sign of respect and a daily reminder every-day when you wake up. How is this different than believing the ink inside the Quran holds the truth or emulates the Divine Nature from the Ashari claim? Ashari Muslims affirm the Quran is still the Word of God just represented through a physical form, so how is this not idolatry? Believing that a physical human-made physical manifestation holds the Divine Speech so that followers of Islam can get closer to god?
This would be even worse than the Mutazilites, for committing idolatry whether intentionally or not is a major grave sin in Islam, to the point those that who commit it and do not repent back are considered as Kafir (infidels). If even they aren't committing idolatry and shirk (polytheism), another major sin in Islam, then at the very least, they believe that a divine part of God can be captured inside the ink and pen of writers as if they the Speech of God and the ink become one and the same, another reference to the Christian belief of God having both a Divine and Human Nature. Of course, Muslims and Ashari Muslims consider this to be heretical and blasphemous, but what's the difference between believing the Quran is both man-made and divine versus the Christological belief of Jesus being both God and Man?
The Third Problem with the Ashari answer that the Quran itself is created while the Speech of God isn't is where is the Speech of God then? Asharis can't answer that it is still in heaven for they also believe the Mushaf or Quran contains the Word and Speech of God. If they believe that it is still in heaven with god and not on earth, then what are they even reading every day? Clearly not the Speech of God if they claim it isn't with us now, perhaps an imperfect human copy of the divine Speech of God but that would mean the Quran is imperfect and the work of man, which would be affirming the Mutazilite position. So they can't claim it is both in the heavens and on the earth nor claim it is either in the heavens only or on the earth with mankind only.
I already explained they also can't say the Speech of God is contained inside the ink and letters of the Quran for that means the Divine Speech has become limited because of it. God in Islam can never be limited, nor can His creatures limit god. So if isn't option A, B, or C, where is the Holy Sacred Speech of God then? The Speech which is supposed to be the principle guiding force for all of mankind especially, Muslims. How can Asharis then claim they believe in the Quran as the revelation and Word of God sent down to Muhammad if they can't tell us where in their holy book, is the Speech of God itself? At worst, this means the Ashari belief entails the Quran isn't holy or divine thus eliminating Islam's entire main source and one of the 6 pillars of Iman (faith), and at best, reading the Quran isn't a holy act nor can be used as a book for guidance, for Muslims aren't reading the Word of God then. They are reading an imperfect fallible man-made copy of the Speech of God, not the true Divine Inspiration from Allah.
TLDR, the Ashari-Maturidi middle path that the Quran was uncreated and eternal, yet its ink and paper, individual letters and words were created strips the Quran has multiple problems, some may even go against what Islam stands for. It strips the Quran of its Divine Sacred Essence as the Word of God, at worse it may lead to shirk and idolatry akin to the Hindus and Pagans, and at best, Asharis can't point to us where the Word and Speech of God is in the Quran.
Athari/Ahlul Hadith
Now for the Atharis, they are strict literalists who believe the Quran and Allah's Speech both are uncreated unlike the Asharis/Maturidis who adopt a middle path, or the Mutazilite who outright claim the Quran was created, the extreme position.
The First Problem with the Athari position is pretty clear, if the Quran is the literal Word of God completely, then does that mean what Muslims are holding is a literal piece of God here on earth in the moral realm? Does that mean god is with us all the time? How can god, who Muslims consider as being transcendent be here on earth with mankind? If the Quran is the literal physical Speech of God and not just metaphorically or analogically, then does this mean the Speech of God exists on Earth? How can god be here on Earth? The Atharis believe literally that the Quran is the Speech of God, so unless they claim the Speech of God suddenly transformed into a physical object (which I'll address below), the Quran would be a god or at least have a piece of the divine essence of Allah.
This is no different than the Christian position where there exists a God in heaven and a God on Earth at the same time. As I already mentioned, Muslims consider the Christian position of a god on earth unacceptable yet when we look at their own views, we find (in the Athari case) a piece of god exists on earth. Allah still exists in the heavens, yet the Speech of God exists here in the Quran. Let's not even get into the issue of a transcendent god existing in the mortal physical realm, where the laws of physics govern meaning god would be limited in some capacity (which most Muslims would see as ridiculous)
The Second Problem is the relationship between the Quran (God's Speech) and God himself. Considering the Quran was revealed to Muhammad and sent down by Gabriel, how should we understand the Speech of God is here now? Do Atharis believe that the Speech of God suddenly separated from the main body when the Quran was revealed and sent down to earth? Or do Atharis believe the Quran is still the undivided Speech of God, in which case a part of god is literally on earth?
Or what about when the Quran was compiled in book form starting with Abu Bakr's reign and ending with Uthman's standardization? Should we take this to mean now not only does the Speech of God literally exist on earth but the Speech of God now has taken shape, molded into letters and words while compiled into a book equipped with paper pages and covers from front to back? If they want to deny these are from god i.e. the physical cover is man-made, then they would be subscribing to the Ashari-Maturidi doctrine of the middle path (which I already showed also has problems). If they want to take the other path and claim the Quran we have now is not the Word of God literally, then they would be subscribing to the heretical Mutazilite position which also, has tons of religious and doctrinal problems.
TLDR, the Athari literalist position invites more harm than good when it comes to answering the question of the Quran's uncreated nature. It would mean god is literally on earth, or a piece of god's divine essence is. Affirming that a piece of the Divine Essence exists here on earth with mankind would be something similar to the Christian belief that god exists both in the heavens and on earth (Father and Son). Other than that, it would also complicate the relationship between the Quran and God even more. If the Quran is the literal Word and Speech of God, how do Atharis explain the Quran's standardization into a single written book with ink, paper, and covers? Does it mean the Speech of God underwent a physical transformation?
Consequences
Islam posits the Quran to be the Word of God from Allah Himself, however how exactly does that work leads to massive problems within Islam's doctrinal framework. Muslims can't state the Quran is the true literal Speech of God otherwise they would be committing a blasphemous act by believing god is literally on earth with us at this very moment. They also can't deny it is the Speech of God for Islam considers the Quran to be the perfect Kalamullah (literally the Word of God). It is one of the core tenets of belief that Muslims believe the Quran to be the actual Words of God sent down to Muhammad as the last revelation. They also can't adopt a middle path like the Asharis-Maturidis because I've already shown that this just leaves the Quran inside a grey area, it's both the Word of God and also not the Word of God at the same time. Other problems are also relevant which I've already discussed above. Either the middle approach collapses into itself, becoming either one the extreme views, literal divine affirmation like the Atharis, or the extreme divine nullification like the Mutazilites.
Other religions don't have this problem. They do not believe Jesus or Moses were gifted the actual literal Words and Speech of God which existed since time immemorial. Christians believe the Bible was divinely authored by the Apostles of Jesus, where the Holy Spirit guides the writers of the Bible into writing down the true teachings of Jesus and Christianity. Christians don't believe the Bible's passages are the literal Speech of God which has existed with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as if affirming the Bible was also another Divine Person of the Trinity. No, only Muslims as far as I know affirm both their Holy Book contains the Speech of God which both exists on Earth and also with God up in heaven but that leaves them in a contradiction of whether to affirm the Quran is God Himself on Earth or the true Words of God are still up in heaven. After all, how can the Divine Nature which is uncorrupted and perfect exist in a world not perfect, but actually filled with sin, corruption, and spiritual pollution?
In the end, Muslims face a dilemma with regard to the Quran's Holy and Divine Nature. This a dilemma which after going through all the possible Muslim answers that have been given over the years, still fails to give us a proper satisfying answer.
Conclusion
All the responses and viewpoints of the major Islamic sects fail to answer the question, of whether the Quran is created or not. They tried to square a circle by trying to find a balance between affirming the Quran is the divine Word of God while at the same time not falling into a literalist interpretation where god is on Earth (as the Atharis do). However, all responses so far have failed to properly find the right solution, all either fall into extremities at both ends of the spectrum (Mutazilite and Athari) or tried to strike a balance, but only managed to kick the can down the road even further.
If Christianity has the Problem of the Trinity, a major fundamental question that still has philosophers and theologians scratching their heads trying to find an answer, then the Problem of the Quran's Nature is the Islamic version of it. The difference is while Christians continue to debate and argue about the Trinity's true nature, Muslim and Islamic scholars have relatively abandoned the debate, choosing to hold either one of the three major schools of thought. My personal opinion is this is an unfortunate situation, ever since the decline of philosophy in Islamic thought, Kalam and Falsafah (Islamic philosophy) have gained a bad reputation amongst Muslims as being a "gateway to blasphemy". Rarely you will find Muslim scholars in the modern era debate about this, let alone teach laymen Muslims about these topics.
At the very least, I hope my post can inspire future Muslims to look into this topic further, creating new fascinating answers and arguments that contribute to the Muslim and non-Muslim understanding of what Allah is in Islam.

✍🏼 Pre-Match Ramblings
Well, there goes another season, and it looks like we won't be getting our fairytale ending that we all wanted. We can thank Spurs and Son in particular for that. But oh well, you can't rely on others for things like this. I'm not gonna bring up the losses against Villa or the dropped points to Fulham, you can read every other comment in the Daily Discussion for that.
It's hard to just talk about this game, but what I will say is that I was shocked to see the recent form of Everton. Yes, that run of games includes Sheffiled United and Nottingham Forest at home, but it also includes Liverpool at home. I think we should be glad we're not at Goodison park, because Everton seem to be able to pull a result out of their arses at that place this season. Away, however, seems to be a different story. They got battered 6-0 by Chelsea, lost 2-0 to United, 2-0 to City, and so on and so forth. I can't fathom a world where we lose this game.
I imagine fans will be watching this game with one eye, with the other eye planted firmly on the game in Manchester that has the potential to change our fortunes. Does David Moyes have something for us? Probably not, let's be honest. West Ham have had a... leaky defense this season, and that's putting it lightly. Perhaps we could loan them Declan Rice for a few hours?
Whatever happens in Manchester and in London on Sunday, we should all be immensely proud of this team. We may not have done enough to take home the gold, but we are getting better and better every season. Last season a lot of people thought 'Well that was there chance', as though it was a one off. We have proved that wrong, and improved all over the pitch. We have been elevated by the likes of Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, David Raya, and our stars such as Saliba, Saka, Gabriel, White, and Odegaard keep improving every season. We are not yet at our ceiling. Nowhere near. This team has a bright future, and I can't wait to see where they can go.
On a more personal note, I have thoroughly enjoyed writing these Pre-Match threads for the majority of this season. Writing about Arsenal is something I have been wanting to do for a long time, and to finally be doing it week after week, and having people actually reading what I have to say, is a surreal feeling. I will continue to write these next season, hopefully with a tool to automate the bits at the top (it's a bit dull copying everything over every time). Thank you especially to those of you which have gone to my website. Throughout the summer I may write some retrospective pieces on the season, and do some transfer rumour roundups, so keep an eye out for those.
Come on you Gunners!

2024.05.17 09:58 Resident1567899 The Quran can't be the Word of God.

This is one of the only issues where every Islamic sect agrees with each other in condemning this belief, be it Ashari, Maturidi, or Athari. After that, I'll address the Second View

2024.05.17 09:55 Hungry_Spite_4185 Weird childhood memory about a study. No parental consent

Part of me is hoping one of the people involved see's this or has info I can use to get more information
Whenever I recollect this to my parents they both say they had zero knowledge about what went on. When I was in 1st grade (2003-2004?)I was called aside from class and taken to a separate administrative room used for extended care. This was a small private roman Catholic pre-k-8th grade school that is part of the South Bay area diocese. I don't remember which teacher or staff member brought me over but I was in the room with two other class mates who I'll call AM and AF (their names both started with "A" one was male and the other female). We were introduced to two college students from a local university which was either San Jose State or Stanford. I maybe wrong but those two stick out the most from what I remember. When the study began we were asked to choose our a toy from a shelf. After we took turns telling a story about an argument or figuring out a conflict. Those details I can't remember as it's been around 20 years since. When I went to college for psych I learned this is often a tactic similar to that used when kids have been SA'd. As far as I know I was never a victim but the common denominator was that we were part of broken house holds. AM was being raised by his mom while his dad was in prison, I was never told why and never asked. AF told me her dad broke up with her mom because he realized he was gay. My parents were in the middle of a divorced because my dad was a violent alcoholic. My main concern behind all this is that no one actually consented or informed and that this was potentially used as data for something more important. I basically feel gas lit about this ever happening as I fell out of touch whith either classmate and my parents never gave consent for me to be part of this. I don't trust the diocese to give accurate info on this. The school was shady; like it took parents complaining to hang up my graduating class picture in the hall. They completely skipped out class graduating on a wall of class photos that spaned 2 decades. Back in 3rd grade a piece came out in the local paper that the diocese allowed a convicted sex offender to volunteer at around 3 local schools withing the diocese including mine. I definitely came in contact with "Jim" and remember him attempting to groom girls in my class with small gifts.

A Broken Promise Rectified - Chapter 9
The betrayal of death
Helheim long ago
The human population was continuing to increase, and so the son of the primordial Nyx, Thanatos, was given the task of aiding Azrael in his duties.
https://preview.redd.it/k69t9s9xzx0d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=57a1657dcd7be6936df7ecb06800b903cfef888a
With the blood of a primordial flowing through him, Thanatos achieved mastery over the souls of humans, able to manipulate them in any way and guide them to the underworld. When assigned these duties, he was given a weapon forged under the command of Nyx, similarly to his siblings. A marvellous scythe was forged and given to the new god of the dead. A white gem where the handle met the blade. Alongside his primordial blood, this scythe made him nigh unstoppable when directly challenged. With this strength, Thanatos was favoured amongst the gods and heralded as the champion of souls while Azrael watched from the corner, all having forgotten that he was the one who stepped up to take the role initially.
The years went by and Thanatos continued to be praised from all the pantheons in Valhalla, while Azrael’s only praise came from his own, but even then the praise was minimal. All the words and actions from the other gods slowly melted down his mental state, until he suddenly snapped.
‘If Thanatos were to die while out in Asgard, all fame will be mine as the sole guardian of souls. And with Thanatos gone, his scythe is for the taking. Nyx is gone, who’s to stop me? All I have to do… is kill Thanatos.’ Azrael muttered in the privacy of his room, his own scythe resting against the wall next to him. His corrupted mind was set. He gripped the handle to his own scythe and set out to find Thanatos fulfilling his duties.
Azrael scoured the land until he found Thanatos collecting the soul of a young child, solemnly placing the soul in the jewel of his scythe to later return to the underworld. Taking the opportunity, the angel of death silently approached his distracted nemesis and swung with a deep bloodlust, aiming to end this one sided rivalry to rest immediately. The scythe pierced Thanatos’ clothing and chest from behind, digging in between the ribs as it dug into the death god’s torso. Thanatos coughed up blood as he looked down at the blade sticking out of his chest. His vision began to blur as he tightened his grip on his scythe. Without looking, Thanatos swung back behind him to retaliate, but his swing did nothing as Azrael tugged back his scythe, ripping it out from Thanatos who weakly dropped to the floor, his scythe clattering to the ground next to him.
‘Finally! The torment is over! Finally I can get the recognition I deserve! Finally I get power!’ Azrael yelled as he laughed like a maniac. Thanatos shakily reached out to grab his scythe, but Azrael swung his own down at his hand, pinning it to the floor making Thanatos cry out in pain. ‘Oh no, you’re not taking this away from me now.’ Azrael taunted the slowly dying god. ‘It’s been too long now for you to suddenly get out of this with mommy’s special weapon. Your time is up! You can no longer torment me! Everything you have shall be mine! The strength, the fame, the praise! All that you stole from me!’ Azrael twisted his scythe in Thanatos’ hand which slowly turned cold as blood continued to pour out of the wound. Thanatos weakly got in a final breath, before his head dropped to the ground and his body went limp. Azrael’s boot stepped atop the dead god’s head as an act of superiority, pressing the heel down as if to crush the skull. He pulled his scythe out of the corpse’s hand and grabbed the other with his spare hand. With his grip firmly on the scythe, Azrael felt the scythe’s strength flow through him. ‘So this is what he got. This power… It’s magnificent!’
News of Thanatos’ death quickly spread throughout the halls of Valhalla. None ever knew of the true murderer, but all mourned deeply. None except Azrael and Zeus. With Thanatos gone, Azrael was crowned by Zeus as the supreme guide of souls and ‘gifted’ Thanatos' scythe to continue his duties with. All Azrael had to do in exchange was take an oath of silence. Azrael continued his duty as the sole guardian of souls, the threat of Zeus exposing his crime hanging over him as he worked under the thunder god. With the power granted by Thanatos’ scythe, Azrael swiftly took the souls of humans, however not all made it to Helheim. On occasion, he kept the souls trapped in the scythe for his own gain, using them to grant himself strength, the poor souls never seeing the planes of Helheim.
Valhalla arena
All in the arena watch in a mixture of horror and confusion as the previously composed angel breaks down into a psychotic maniac before them.
‘So the mad angel has finally lost it.’ Hermes comments, having secretly known of his betrayal. ‘To think he would snap here though.’
‘He’s gone… Insane. He’s bringing such shame to our pantheon.’ Gabriel says, his eyes wide as he watches the scene below.
‘I always suspected there was something else behind him receiving Thanatos’ scythe rather than just receiving a new title.’ Heracles mutters, realising the true meaning behind this breakdown.
‘Is it just me, or does the air feel colder.’ Mordred asks, a shiver running down his spine.
‘This aura he possesses. It’s terrifying.’ Merlin says in shock.
‘Such an unruly beast. We have exposed the dog for what he truly is.’ Golena scoffs. Morgan doesn’t respond as he readies herself for the coming assault, understanding this was where the true fight began. Instead, to everyone’s surprise, Azrael brings the scythe up to his remaining wing, the blade hooking around it, and yanks it down through the bone, cutting off the remaining wing, the feathers floating down to the arena floor.
‘What is Azrael thinking? From having two wings to now having none when they were giving him such an advantage.’ Ares asks from the commentary booth. Azrael readies his scythe, his own blood dripping off the end point. He then shoots forward at Morgan. The scythe hits the forcefield reactively put up to defend, a small crack forming, but Azrael immediately follows up with another strike with a furious speed. Morgan keeps her guard up as Azrael continues his assault, striking with all parts of the blade. The shield smashes again and Morgan is forced to block the scythe with her staff, the scythe narrowly missing her skin. She flicks a single finger and a small spike of ice shoots out. Azrael backs off and is hit in the stomach by a blast of wind, pushing him back to the other side of the arena. In his psychotic fury, Azrael is immediately back on his feet, sprinting down Morgan.
‘Hurry up and die!’ He yells as he swings his scythe back down, Morgan blocks with her staff again, and the jewel glows again as Azrael suddenly increases in speed, circling behind Morgan and swinging again. With no chance to react, Morgan feels as the scythe slashes through her back, similarly to how Azrael attacked Thanatos. Morgan coughs up blood as both hands grip onto the staff.
‘That surely has to be the end!’ Ares yells, seeing the point of the scythe sticking out of Morgan’s chest and all the blood pouring out onto the floor.
‘Has the witch finally met her match?’ Mordred asks. Everyone in the arena spectating doubted the odds of Morgan surviving this, all but two.
‘If she were to die this easily, she’d have no right to call herself my sister. My killer or not, she’s a strong showing of the true might of our blood.’ Arthur comments.
‘Go ahead Morgan, show the true strength behind humanity’s coldness.’ Heracles mutters.
Morgan's lips curl into a smirk as she plants the staff on the ground in front of her, blood trickling down from the corner of her mouth. A pulse of energy spreads out of the arena, kicking up the dust on the floor and pushing it to the edges. Azrael pulls his scythe out and is about to attack again when another pulse comes out, forcing him back as the pulse turns into a heatwave. Another pulse and the ground begins to rumble with the force of an earthquake. Another pulse and the moisture in the air begins to condense into droplets that stay suspended in the air. Another pulse and the air becomes charged with static electricity, the metal in Azrael’s scythe becoming charged and shocking the dewinged angel. A final pulse and the air immediately freezes, the droplets turning to ice. All the energy released in the pulses condenses down on top of Morgan and a bright glow comes from her staff. The energy flows throughout all of Morgan’s being, the hole caused by the scythe closing quicker than any wound yet. The energy continues to pulse out to then condense into the tip of the staff until it reaches its maximum density. The energy bursts out across the arena, pushing Azrael even further back.
‘Woah, where did she get that?’ Ishtar asks.
‘How did she live?’ Ares follows up.
‘So the humans all have an extra trick up their sleeve.’ Zeus chuckles. ‘This certainly is fun.’
‘This human must be desperate now to face Azrael like that.’ Metatron says.
‘Why is she now wearing all that?’ Mordred rhetorically asks.
‘So it seems she’s been taught more than just magic.’ Merlin muses.
‘Let’s see your strength with a weapon then sister.’ Arthur says with a smirk.
Down in the arena, all eyes were trained on Morgan, now adorned with glistening armour made of ice, the staff now topped with a blade of a similar material giving the queen of Britannia a similar scythe.
‘Now this is the true strength held in my blood. Now come angel of death, let’s finish like this.’
https://preview.redd.it/cbqtp76vzx0d1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=778b78a9856870e198129ee266e344f872fedb21
Azrael just laughs at the Queen’s confidence and he points his own scythe out in retaliation. ‘You think that will save you now? You’re dumber than I thought! Now hurry up and die for me!’

2024.05.17 09:12 Extreme-Push4092 1 Date, And Now She’s Flying To See Me.

I wanted to share this story here because I’ve never experienced something like this really. To set the scene, before May I flew back to my home state in the Midwest (I live in CA now) to visit the last of my buddies who were graduating from college.
And for some quick (not) deep lore about this girl I’m about to mention. We met freshman year of college, we sat by eachother in a class and quickly became friends. Though this friendship only lasted that first semester for unspoken reasons. One for me being - we smoked together on Halloween night towards the end of that semester, I got wayyy too high, and thought they could tell, was so embarrassed. (She had no idea, come to find out). I went on and got a girlfriend (until 2022) and we didn’t speak for the next almost 6 years. She would occasionally and subtly like and interact with things I would share online here and there throughout those years. We hadn’t spoken in forever. I was about to be moving in with 3 friends, 2 men, 1 woman. Key details here: this 1 girl went on to become my gf. One night after we moved in, we all decided to download tinder for the fun of it. Within 5 minutes I got the first match, and it was this girl from freshman year, I ecstatically announced it. Flash forward to my relationship with this girl I lived with - it was never forgotten. She would use it against me when she was feeling insecure and ask if I loved her or was thinking about her. When in all honesty, I wasn’t, and didn’t speak to her, but she kept always planting this thought back in my head and questioning my commitment. I had a major crush on this girl when we had that class together, but that was years prior, and don’t think I even expressed it to anybody, but I got over it and moved on, never thought it was a possibility.
Flash forward.
Before going home to visit the boys I posted a photo of myself on my story, not particularly serious but was just feeling good in my skin that day. Me, being single for 2 years now, found that freshman year gal liked it. And cmon, instagram is basically a dating app and we all know it. I said fuck it, and DM’d her that I wanted to see her again. Because in all sincerity, I did. She always peeked my interest, we had good laughs and time together through those short couple months. Whenever I would see her around or from afar during school I would just be curious about what she was up to and like. This in no way ever lead unloyalty in my relationship, I was happy in it. But I pretty much “wasn’t allowed” to speak to her again or interact. Out of respect for my (at the time) girlfriend’s feelings, and knowing that even though I wasn’t feeling anything for this girl, my interacting with her would make my gf think otherwise.
After the Dm was sent
I left my phone in the car and anxiously went into the gym. When I came back I found a message of her saying how she would “love that” etc. To spare your time, if you’ve read this far - we had some good online chatting and came to find out that we were both very deeply crushing on eachother that freshman year, and thought we were both out of reach for eachother. This information would’ve gone unspoken and unknown forever had she not liked my story, and I not dmd. I asked her if at the end of my friends visit I could leave them early and come down to her and take her on a date. She lived about 4 hours south of where I was at. She happily agreed and this implied that I would stay with her.
The date went beautifully. It was out of a movie. Museam/butterfly house, food, sitting and talking for 4 hours straight, etc etc. the part that really surprised me as well was the level of open communication we had. She expressed that she was anxious before bed and I told her that she should tell me next moment she gets a wave, and she did. She said nobody has ever done that for her. I decided that I didn’t want to try and sleep with her because of all of these factors of the date, and this bit of anxiety. We slept together, but didn’t sleep together. The morning, all of it, was so lovely and romantic, and I think that by not having sex we established our quickly discovered joy for eachothers presence.
I had to leave after that morning and head home, to catch my flight back to CA. Again more movie shit. A wonderful date then leaving state right after, brutal.
Flash forward one more time, bear with me.
Current day. Last week she bought a plane ticket to come visit me here for 4 nights at the end of this month. I’ve never been with someone where I would be comfy with them visiting for that amount of time having only gone on one date. I am eagerly waiting for her visit, and she is the same. This is crazy right?! Maybe a good crazy. We are just both happy to be this enthusiastic about something. I think we are on the same page. Can’t really worry about other factors just yet. Need to enjoy it as and how it comes.
In short: the girl I met and lost touch with that my ex always worried about (for no valid reason. I had zero contact or feeling for this gal during relationship) is flying out to stay with me for 4 nights on the other side of the country after going on one date. We connected very deeply, very fast. My ex and I had a healthy split. She is definitely going to hate me and all of my past truthful statements will now become lies in her head right?

2024.05.17 08:53 FossilBoi Wildlife File: Pale Crawler

Pale Crawler
Troglodytopithecus leptinermis
Height: 3-4 feet (quadrupedal), 6 feet (bipedal)
Length: 5 feet
Classification: Troglodytopithecini
Subdivision: Fauna
Predation: Omnivorous
----------------------------------------------
Cryptozoology:
Though the story of the Rake is nothing more than an Internet creepypasta, there have been stories of similar creatures fitting the description; pale, malnourished, humanoid creatures on all fours that bring menace and dread to those unlucky enough to stumble across them. Such cryptids have been referred to as crawlers, or pale crawlers (sometimes skinwalkers and wendigoes are erroneously grouped into this, when in reality, the former two are separate and independent things from the crawler phenomena), and Monarch has discovered that not only are these creatures indeed real and are hardy survivors living in the Hollow Earth and surface, but also have close ties to Bigfoots, and possibly may even form a constituent group of New World primates. Their tribe, Troglodytopithecini, is currently viewed as a sister tribe to the Variupithecini, the Bigfoot group, and though their taxonomy is still being studied and debated, it is clear that these two are related in some way, both being anomalous primates. As for the crawlers themselves, as their scientific name shows, are mainly cave dwellers by nature, though this hasn’t stopped them from wandering beyond the subterranean realm and up into more open territory, such as the surface. These creatures are clearly apes, but with a morphology unlike anything seen before, adapted to life in darkness. Further investigation into their habitats in the Hollow Earth show their troglobitic lifestyle, preferring caves and desolate, dark areas. Though found in confirmed habitats elsewhere like the Damned Forest, the Valley of Memories, the Serpent’s Nest, the Rotting Pit, and Ginnungagap, they mainly seem to thrive in what have been nicknamed “In-Between Zones,” cavernous passages connecting regions and usually being sparse in life, though open up to regions that could serve as hunting grounds. This habit has also been carried over to the surface, with pale crawlers preferring nesting in caves, sinkholes, canyons, ravines and forests (only coming out at night), as well as taking advantage of abandoned buildings or structures they could find. Pale crawlers are opportunistic omnivores, feeding on anything they can find, from uprooting plants to stealing eggs from nests, to even snatching small animals. However, pale crawlers on the surface exhibit a rather strange yet consistent appearance: the stereotypical malnourished and ghastly forms usually seen in sightings and stories of their cryptozoological namesakes. For a time, it was unclear why, but recent analysis of pale crawlers found at the surface and compared to ones in the Hollow Earth show dramatic differences. Whereas Hollow Earth individuals show healthy and fit bodies, the surface individuals are not only pale, sickly and gaunt, but contain a rather disturbing neurological anomaly: the failure or malfunction of the amygdala and the hypothalamus. These parts of the brain are visibly afflicted in surface specimens, resulting in symptoms similar to starvation, anemia, kwashiorkor, and electrolyte imbalance. The prevailing theory is that pale crawlers sighted at the surface are only there due to extremely dire straits, with little options below, they resort to going above to try to find food. As a result, these malnourished, desperate creatures are driven by a seemingly never-ending hunger and state of fear, resulting in not only their aggression, but also in other disturbing or unsettling behaviors, such as screeching, hissing, rocking back and forth, stalking, purposefully contorting their bodies beyond their tolerance for pain, and so on. There is still so much to the pale crawler that we don’t know, though we believe the disparity between surface and Hollow Earth individuals isn’t unlike the blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus), in which taking it outside its familiar habitat may be to its physical and mortal detriment. It is entirely possible that pale crawlers may not be as common as we think, and the ones we find on the surface are merely the desperate members of a dying species. Either way, it is frustrating yet sad to see that much of what we know about them comes from afflicted individuals rather than healthy ones. ---------------------------------------------
Threat Analysis:
Given their mythical notoriety, pale crawlers are extremely dangerous, and though sympathetic in their plight, should not be fed or dealt with. Their desperation for food provokes them to chase after potential prey for miles at a time, trying to do so even after their own bodies give out under the exertion. They can be quite intelligent too, able to learn and understand behaviors of their prey (for example, how a human opens a door) to try to go after their prey at any cost. Though their eyesight isn’t reliable, pale crawlers have acute hearing and smell, allowing them to easily detect the presence of prey before the prey even notices them. That said, pale crawlers are not invincible, and there are ways to scare them off or kill them. Since they are used to living in darkness, they are either living in dark places or coming out at night, which means bright lights can be an excellent deterrent (strobe lights especially can give them a seizure), with even a phone’s flashlight being enough to scare them. They also have very thin skin, making them vulnerable to most weapons. The bone density of their skulls has been shown to also be thin, taking less effort to kill one via a headshot. Ideally, pale crawlers should be left alone for both their and our sakes, though when push comes to shove and lives are at stake, there are ways of fighting back.

2024.05.17 08:35 Fluid-Ad7796 Better Walks Ahead: FIDA AutoBrake Leash

Better Walks Ahead: FIDA AutoBrake Leash
https://preview.redd.it/mvbndf0ylx0d1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=246488b839e6d31235632cc2aaac2c914354b679
"I have been using the FIDA ABS leash 2-3x a day for a month now, and my recommendation is, IT’S WORTH IT. If you want to more info on why, I’ll delve into what our experience has been like using this with a 1.5yr old hunting-breed dog who can pull over 250lbs and can’t be trusted off-leash. We went with the XL even though our dog is only 65lbs, but it’s a good fit for us. However, I’m not entirely sure there’s any difference between L and XL other than price…
THE PRODUCT:
We have been putting this leash under serious strain, and I have been impressed to find that it holds up remarkably well - while still being lightweight and comfortable to use. In spite of my dog constantly catching and wrapping the tether on/around trees, rocks, and underbrush, there is not a single snag or stain on the fabric. I’m growing convinced that the only way to damage the nylon is to let your dog chew on it. Even though we never leave the leash out, unfortunately our mischievous pup still managed this once when the tether was hanging in front of his face and we were distracted. That did put a small fray on the edge where he gave it a few gnaws, but it has not yet deteriorated any farther. Because of its design, we have also never had a problem with the tether jamming during retraction - which is common with some other leashes. Even after a couple of rough falls onto concrete, there’s also no scratches or cracks on the handle.
Despite being a small person, I find the handle to be sustainably comfortable - even when using for more than 2hrs. Sweaty palms make the grip a little less secure, but that’s normal for any non-absorbable material. But even on the hottest day, it wouldn’t slip out of your hands. The Auto Break System is very helpful but not an end-all to lunging (if your pup is prone to doing that). It usually gives our dog another inch of leash per second of full-power pulling, but that at least gives me enough time to get my feet firmly planted, manually lock the leash, and expert a counter force to bring him to a full stop. If he dog started chasing something on a regular leash, it would typically take me about 10-12ft to make that happen.
THE EXPERIENCE:
For the most part, this lets our dog feel like he’s off-leash and isn’t too much trouble for the us to use as handlers (especially compared to a long line). I don’t need to write an essay explaining my reasoning for trying a retractable leash after training seven dogs to walk in-heel, but our current boy has some peculiar and extraordinarily strong breed instincts that need to be nurtured and not curtailed. That largely means letting him sniff / track as much as he wants while we walk, which we have found far easier to manage when he has 15ft vs 6ft. Like all methods that allow your dog more independence, this comes with some risks (like heading into streets without you or getting in peoples’ way) but these can be largely avoided with a basic “stay” command. Certainly, the risks of using this are nothing compared to letting your dog off-leash - even if you think they can be completely trusted. If anything, having a connection between you and your dog is always safer. And in the few moments I’ve had to quickly close the distance between myself and the pup, even grabbing and pulling the nylon tether on this leash wasn’t a problem. The only time I feel like this leash hasn’t been superior to a standard leash is when navigating dense foot-traffic (or if your dog is flailing around wildly). But thankfully neither of those things happens a lot, even though we live in San Francisco and sometimes have a wild hellhound on our hands."

2024.05.17 07:46 ravennsmith BF fired 2 days after being hired & calling out quality & safety concerns

Sorry in advance for how long this is. Just trying to give you all the details.
TL;DR-BF was fired from new job in two days after calling out multiple safety and quality issues.
My boyfriend started a new job yesterday at a medical cannabis facility. When he was filling out paperwork, he noticed some discrepancies between the paperwork & what was discussed during the interview/ acceptance process. He asked about it and was told that they could talk to HR later on.
When he was brought out to the floor, shown how to trim a singular plant & then basically left unsupervised for the rest of the day. Now my boyfriend does have a really good work ethic and he keeps busy so he ended up trimming a bunch of plants & actually found several aphid infested plants. He brought it up to someone who shrugged it off & asked him to go clean. While he was doing that he noticed equipment & tools that had their cords repaired/replaced with extension cords, standing puddles of water, & water running from broken drainage systems into walkways so he brought it up to the safety lead who said "yeah that's just how it is here". Just to give a little background my boyfriend worked for a multi billion dollar manufacturing company before this. He has years of experience with quality, safety, GMPs, SOPs etc.
When HR was called the rep said that that if he had a problem with how things were done then he could resign. He said that the rep told him he had an attitude problem & cussed at him calling him a lazy asshole among other things. He told her he felt disrespected and asked her why she felt the need to act this way when he was just trying to get clarification about his schedule, pay rate, & unsafe conditions. The rep basically told him she could just fire him right now because we are an "as is" state.
The facility manager was on the call as well & started recording it after the rep went off & cussed at him. When she made the firing comment he said that he felt that was unnecessary due to the fact that they are short staffed. At that point my bf asked if he could leave since it was an hour past his scheduled shift & the manager ended the call & told him that if he didn't hear from him to come back the next day.
My boyfriend never heard anything and went back in this morning, he was asked to clean all the bathrooms in the facility and then an hour before his clock out time they pulled him aside and said they were firing him because he wasn't a good fit for them.
I told him to call OSHA which he did and OSHA directed him to whistleblower.gov and he filled out that form as well. I don't really know what else we can do. Part of the problem is that I am trying to get a business off the ground after quitting my job in August because my dad died. My boyfriend left his old job because the schedule was hell and started this job and now we're in a situation where he doesn't have any income. He can apply for unemployment, but I just don't feel like how he was treated is okay. Any advice is appreciated♡

(GA) Are flowers legally decorations?
My lease states that you can't put signs, banners, or other decorations outside your unit. The Balcony/Patio part of my lease says they should be kept clean and orderly. I'm on the second floor and only have a shared balcony with stairs leading to the balcony and our doors.
I received the attached email from my property management office and I'm worried because I just bought like $150 in pots and flowers (less flowers than you'd think) for my patio and I really don't want them to say I can't have them. They look nice and my wife and I are proud to have planted them.
Nothing in my lease says anything about not having plants specifically, I've emailed the office but I think it was after they closed (5:30). The lease says something about fire safety rules and regulations section 501.7 but when i google that i dont find anything. Think I'm in the clear or should I be worried?
