Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut Installation Guide (FULLY WORKING, NOT EMULATION)

2024.06.01 14:39 ChasHodges Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut Installation Guide (FULLY WORKING, NOT EMULATION)

Getting Deadly Premonition to work on the Steam Deck through its native PC port has been an absolute nightmare. Thought I'd type up the steps here to try and save some of you poor souls the hassle if you ever want to give it a blast, but also, as safekeeping for myself in case I forget the steps I took in the future!
Following these steps to the letter SHOULD get you up and running. File locations assume you are installing the game to the Steam Deck's hard drive. If you are using an SD card you will need to adapt steps 6 and 11 to reflect the install directory of the game.
  1. Install the game from Steam. Obviously. Don't run it yet.
  2. Use the Steam settings menu, navigate to 'Properties' and then the 'Compatibility' tab. Choose Proton 3.16-9 from the dropdown.
  3. Run the game and let Steam finish its installation. When the Deadly Premonition config tool pops out, just close down the whole game.
  4. Head to Desktop mode.
  5. Download this version of the PhysX installer. (version 9.13.0725 in case the link eventually goes down). Rename the downloaded file PhysX_SystemSoftware.msi
  6. In the Dolphin file browser, navigate to: Home/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut/redist. Drag your downloaded and renamed PhysX_SystemSoftware.msi here, overwriting the existing file.
  7. Download this file. It's basically a text file with instructions for Proton which we'll be using shortly. The file should be named vc1decoder.verb. If you can't find the download link at the github page, look in the top right for a download symbol which when you hover over it reads 'Download raw file'.
  8. In the Dolphin file browser, move the vc1decoder.verb file to Home/deck
  9. Open the Konsole app from the 'start' bar (I don't know what it's called in Linux!) and type the following line EXACTLY: /usbin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=protontricks com.github.Matoking.protontricks 247660 -q quartz qedit devenum /Home/deck/vc1decoder.verb
  10. Konsole will start displaying some installation data - if any windows pop up just press ok to clear them.
  11. Next, grab DPFix from here. Unzip the file and place the entire contents in Home/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Deadly Premonition The Director's Cut/
  12. DPFix enables much improved graphics / resolution / texture injection / all sorts. You can edit individual settings by opening DPFix.ini in a text editor. Under the 'Graphics Options' section, make any desire tweaks - the file is really nicely annotated so you shouldn't need much help from me here. Under the 'Window Options' section make your settings read: forceWindowed 1 and borderlessFullscreen 0.
  13. SAVE your changes!
  14. Back to Game Mode. Use the Steam settings menu, navigate to 'Properties' and then in the 'General' tab enter the following command EXACTLY under the 'Launch Options' section: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n,b" %command%
  15. We're almost there, gang! Run the game. When the DP Config file boots, click 'Settings' and ensure Controller settings are set to default - any eventual tweaks will be done using Steam Input.
  16. Boot the game - after the company and developer logos play you should be presented with a video cutscene / intro. If this is playing with sound / video, we're just about there. If all is well, quit the game one final time.
  17. Back in the Steam settings menu, navigate to 'Properties' and then the 'Compatibility' tab. Choose either Proton Experimental (not tested) or the most recent Proton GE (I'm using GE-Proton9-5) from the dropdown. This step is super important as otherwise controls will not work properly!
  18. Boot the game! Enjoy!
  19. (If using the Steam Deck OLED, cap the framerate using the '...' button to 60fps otherwise physics in game will be busted.)

2024.06.01 14:02 karakickass Week 22: "Chapter 45. The Shower of Blood, Chapter 46. Unlimited Credit" Reading Discussion

Do you think someone told Dumas to "up the stakes" or something... ?
Synopsis:
Bertuccio concludes his tale by telling how the jeweller goes to bed upstairs. Then later there are some suspicious sounds followed by a gunshot. Blood begins to soak through the floorboards in a "shower of blood" on him. He breaks free of his hiding place and witnesses the last dying moments of the poor jeweller. The scene comes to life for him. La Carconte has stabbed the jeweller and TheCad has shot his wife. Regardless of this scene, Bertuccio's pursuers find him just then and he is arrested -- his bloody clothes telling a different story than what happened.
Lucky for him, he has heard the name of Abbé Busoni. The man is searched for and after months is found. The Abbé hears Bertuccio's confession and works to free him. [We know that Busoni and MC are the same person, but Bertuccio doesn't...However, it does beg the question, why make him tell the whole story again???] Once freed, Busoni tells him to find Monte Cristo and now our dear Count has a servant who is highly motivated to serve him.
Next, we see Danglars try to pay him a visit. MC plays coy and then demands that Bertuccio buy the horses from him (MC must have the best horses, after all!) There is a curious moment where MC and Ali talk "for hours" despite Ali being mute? Hmm. And there is also an exchange with this valet where MC shows he has allowed the valet to steal, but MC is also investing money on his behalf? HMMMM.
Then MC visits Danglars and in a battle of manners and wits, MC bests him into unleashing "unlimited credit" by deploying displays of ample wealth and many letters of credit. I'm sure that will end well for everyone! Then MC is introduced to Danglars' friends and soon to his wife.
Discussion:
  1. Yikes! Did you think TheCad and La Carconte had that in them? Is TheCad's fate what you wanted to come about?
  2. What is your reaction to the way MC seems to accumulate and retain favours/servants?
  3. What is the deal with the horses? Why must MC have the best?
  4. Why do you think Danglars was bested in this scene? What weaknesses did MC play on?
Next week, chapters 47 and 48!

By the end of this chapter, you will have a solid understanding of how to use charts and time frames to analyze and trade the markets.

What are Charts and Time Frames?

Charts and time frames are the foundation of technical analysis. A chart is a graphical representation of a security's price action over a specific period. Time frames, on the other hand, refer to the duration of the data displayed on the chart. In other words, time frames determine how much data is displayed on the chart and how often the data is updated.

Types of Charts

There are several types of charts, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The most common types of charts are:
1. Line Chart: A line chart connects the closing prices of a security over a specific period, creating a continuous line. This chart is useful for identifying trends and patterns.
2. Candlestick Chart: A candlestick chart displays the high, low, open, and close prices of a security over a specific period. Each candle represents a specific time period, and the color of the candle indicates whether the price closed higher or lower than the previous day's close.
3. Bar Chart: A bar chart is similar to a candlestick chart but does not display the open and close prices. Instead, it shows the high and low prices, as well as the open and close prices.
4. Renko Chart: A Renko chart is a type of chart that uses a unique algorithm to create a chart that is not based on time. Instead, it uses price movements to create a chart that is more focused on the price action.

Time Frames

Time frames determine the duration of the data displayed on the chart. Common time frames include:
1. 1-minute: A 1-minute chart displays the price action over a 1-minute period.
2. 5-minute: A 5-minute chart displays the price action over a 5-minute period.
3. 15-minute A 15-minute chart displays the price action over a 15-minute period.
4. 30-minute: A 30-minute chart displays the price action over a 30-minute period.
5. 1-hour: A 1-hour chart displays the price action over a 1-hour period.
6. 4-hour: A 4-hour chart displays the price action over a 4-hour period.
7. Daily: A daily chart displays the price action over a 1-day period.
8. Weekly: A weekly chart displays the price action over a 1-week period.
9. Monthly: A monthly chart displays the price action over a 1-month period.

Backtesting and Evaluating Trading Ideas

As a trader, it's essential to test and refine your trading ideas before implementing them in live markets. Backtesting and evaluating your trading ideas can help you identify potential flaws, optimize your strategy, and increase your chances of success. In this chapter, we'll explore the process of backtesting and evaluating trading ideas using TradingView.com, a popular platform for charting and backtesting trading strategies.

What is Backtesting?

Backtesting is the process of applying a trading strategy to historical market data to evaluate its performance. It allows you to test your trading idea on past data to see how it would have performed in real-time. By backtesting your strategy, you can:
1. Identify potential flaws in your strategy
2. Optimize your strategy for better performance
3. Refine your strategy to improve its accuracy
4. Evaluate the strategy's risk-reward ratio

Why Backtest?

Backtesting is crucial for several reasons:
1. Risk management: Backtesting helps you identify potential risks associated with your trading strategy.
2. Strategy optimization: Backtesting allows you to refine your strategy to improve its performance.
3. Performance evaluation: Backtesting enables you to evaluate the performance of your strategy and make data-driven decisions.
4. Confidence booster: Backtesting gives you confidence in your strategy, reducing the risk of emotional trading decisions.

How to Backtest on TradingView.com

TradingView.com offers a range of tools and features for backtesting trading ideas. Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started:
1. Create a new chart: Open TradingView.com and create a new chart for the asset you want to backtest.
2. Select the data range: Choose the time period for which you want to backtest your strategy. You can select a specific date range or use the default settings.
3. Add the strategy: Click on the "Indicators" tab and add the strategy you want to backtest. You can use built-in indicators or create your own custom indicators.
4. Set the parameters: Configure the strategy's parameters, such as the number of bars to look back, the number of trades to take, and the stop-loss levels.
5. Run the backtest: Click the "Run" button to start the backtest. TradingView.com will apply your strategy to the selected data range and provide performance metrics.
6. Analyze the results: Review the backtest results, including the strategy's profit/loss, drawdown, and other performance metrics.

Evaluating Trading Ideas

Evaluating your trading idea is a crucial step in the backtesting process. Here are some key metrics to consider:
1. Profit/Loss: Calculate the total profit or loss generated by your strategy.
2. Drawdown: Measure the maximum loss experienced by your strategy.
3. Sharpe Ratio: Calculate the Sharpe Ratio to evaluate the strategy's risk-adjusted performance.
4. Sortino Ratio: Use the Sortino Ratio to evaluate the strategy's risk-adjusted performance, focusing on the maximum drawdown.
5. Information Coefficient: Calculate the Information Coefficient to evaluate the strategy's ability to generate profits.

Best Practices for Backtesting

To get the most out of backtesting, follow these best practices:
1. Use a robust data set: Ensure your data is accurate and free from errors.
2. Test multiple scenarios: Test your strategy on different time frames, assets, and market conditions.
3. Monitor performance metrics: Keep track of your strategy's performance metrics and adjust as needed.
4. Refine your strategy: Continuously refine your strategy to improve its performance.
5. Avoid overfitting: Be cautious of overfitting, where your strategy performs well on the training data but poorly on new data.

Conclusion

Backtesting and evaluating trading ideas is a crucial step in the trading process. By using TradingView.com and following best practices, you can refine your trading strategy, optimize its performance, and increase your chances of success. Remember to evaluate your strategy's performance using relevant metrics and refine it continuously to improve its performance. 2024.06.01 07:34 merdekabaik Conditional Standing in CS

Hello I just saw that lots of recent post regarding people receiving letters that they are in a Failed or Conditional Standing. I just want to know if you guys are going to attend the advising session received on their email. Also, I would like to create a Discord Server to cope with this matter and just for supporting each other. (DM me if you are interested). Also, before you guys comment on my post I do have a better excuse for this as no one at Concordia were willing to help me when I needed help the most for my math elective courses this Winter 2024 and I was struggling to find some help with other peers that would provide me with better guidance. I did watch lots of YouTube videos on it but most of them were not useful at all! Moreover, I had gone through several acquaintances that had left me prior to the start of my studies in 2023-24 year. Now I don't want you guys to see this as a display of my depression but just try to understand those people they are going through as you might not know them personally and especially on Reddit in this case.

Context :
The Collector and you moved into his manor a few days ago. He seems a bit calmer and happier to be able to set up his cabinet again. Naturally, as his favorite artifact, you are pampered and well taken care of. Gradually, he appears less sinister, considering an outcome other than making you his next object.

Additional info :
· Here’s PART 1
· Here’s PART 2
· This script is PART 3 [Good Ending], there is also PART 3 [Bad Ending] HERE
Estimated audio length : 1200-1300sw, 5 to 10min
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The scene unfolds in the Collector's mansion]

[Speaker humming as he walks around the room]
Speaker : Hm hm… I'll place some corals here, oh and this drawer will be for my seashells !
Speaker : And I think I'll use this display case to showcase my butterflies ! Yes, yes, that'll be perfect !
(Listener approaches and enters the room)
Speaker (delighted) : Oh my dear, I didn't see you there. Did you sleep well ?
(...)

Speaker : Very well ! I'm glad to see you're adjusting perfectly to our new home.
Speaker (sighs) : Even so, I have to start over with my entire collection from scratch !
[Speaker moves/searches through boxes]

Speaker : Hm ? Oh yes, I still have quite a few items to unpack or set up. It's quite a bit of work after all.
Speaker : But now that you're here, perhaps you can help me with the organizing ?
Speaker (satisfied) : Very well. You're being quite obedient.
(...)

Speaker : You can empty this box here, the contents aren't particularly fragile. It's mostly books and scientific manuals.
(Listener empties the box) [Sound of books?]

Speaker : Hm ? Is there a problem, my love ?
Speaker : Oh, right. Well yes, they're dissection books, so they contain... let's say... graphic elements.
Speaker (amused) : Haha, I had forgotten about that detail.
[Speaker continues to organize]

Speaker : Despite all these old books, some of them have sentimental value. In fact, all the items here are important to me. I'm relieved to have been able to retrieve the majority.
Speaker (grumbling) : If only those nosy neighbors hadn't gotten in my way, I could have retrieved everything.
Speaker (more annoyed, but amused) : They should consider themselves lucky that I was in a delicate position and unable to act freely. If it had been the other way around, they wouldn't have their heads today.

Speaker (calmer) : Anyway, that's all in the past now.
Speaker : The main thing is that I was able to bring you with me ; I couldn't bear to lose my favorite object.
(...)

Speaker (closer) : Oh but you are. You are the most precious artifact I've ever possessed, my dear.
[Speaker steps back, leaving space for the Listener again]
(...)

Speaker : In any case, you are of great help to me ; with your help, we'll soon have everything set up. This collection will be even more beautiful than my old one.
[Speaker lifts a jar]

Speaker : Look at this jar here... it contains an immortal jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii. This creature has the ability to revert to its juvenile state after reaching maturity, technically making it unable to die. Fascinating, isn't it ?
[Speaker picks up another object]

Speaker : And this one, it's an old pocket watch... If I remember correctly, it belonged to a watchmaker who claimed he could stop time. But you know what, I think he was pulling my leg.
Speaker : Anyway, its design is still lovely, so I took it.
(...)

Speaker : Oh, the letter you're holding, I think there's also an artifact inside.
(Listener opens the envelope)

Speaker : It's a feather from the Roc bird, a mythical creature supposed to be capable of lifting elephants. It would be one of the rare artifacts attributed to this animal.
Speaker (sarcastic) : But honestly, it looks more like an eagle feather.

Speaker : Ah, these objects are fascinating.
Speaker : Each of them has a story. A story that resonates with mine.
(...)

Speaker (hesitant) : When I was a child, I was often alone, lost in a world filled with strange objects that my father collected. It was my only escape, a way to flee from the emptiness that inhabited my daily life.
Speaker (sarcastic) : My mother wasn't very present for me. And my father, well, let's just say that if he could have traded me for a bag of gemstones, he would have.
(...)

Speaker (amused) : Oh, don't look so sad, my dear. I don't blame him. Gemstones are quite prized and hard to acquire.
(...)

Speaker : But you could say that it was in this atmosphere that I clung to something else. This loneliness forged an obsession in me for these curiosities.
Speaker : Perhaps that's why I am so meticulous and obsessive, even in love. I fear losing what is precious to me.
[Pause]

Speaker (in a lighter tone) : Well, all this is quite cheerful, but we should continue organizing, shouldn't we ?
Speaker : Can you pass me that vase ? I'll place it on one of the shelves, I think it'll be perfect here-
(Listener drops and breaks the vase) [Sound of glass breaking]

Speaker (serious) : Hey ! What... what are you doing ? Stop.
(Listener is frightened)

Speaker (realizing) : Oh. Did I scare you ? My dear, I just wanted to tell you not to touch the pieces of glass.
[Speaker approaches the Listener]

Speaker : Hey hey don't apologize
Speaker : It's true that the vase was precious, but not as much as you. If you were hurt... I would never forgive myself. You understand, don't you ? I have to protect you, keep you safe. Always.

Speaker (more obsessive) : Are you sure you're okay ? Let me see... Show me your hands... your arms... Here, come closer to me.
Speaker : Hm... it seems to be okay. That's good, I would have felt terrible if you were hurt. But still, we should stop for now.
[Speaker gets up]

Speaker : I think you must be tired. Come, I'll take you to your
(Listener protests)

Speaker (more obsessive) : But my love, you have no say here. You absolutely must rest.
Speaker (more sternly) : Am I clear ?
(...)

Speaker (back to normal) : Excellent ! Here, take my hand, I'll escort you.
[Speaker and Listener walk a bit to the bedroom]

Speaker : By the way, what do you think of your room ? Does it suit you ?
Speaker : Yes ? Well, I'm delighted to hear that.
(...)

Speaker (amused) : Honestly, I considered putting some of my collection in your new room. I thought having an infected liver on your bedside table could add a nice touch.
Speaker : But in the end, I thought you might prefer to decorate it yourself.
(...)

Speaker : Oh, it's true that since I "brought" you here unexpectedly, you haven't been able to bring any belongings.
Speaker : Don't worry, my dear, I'll buy you everything you need. You just need to ask.
(...)

Speaker : That reminds me ! I did keep a few old clothes. You could wear them in the meantime.
Speaker (approaching) : Oh, even better. I could have you try them on now. What do you say ?
(...)

Speaker : I was sure you would agree.
Speaker (obsessive) : Let's begin! I can't wait to see you in this exquisite outfit...
[Speaker picks out an outfit, sound of clothing]

Speaker : Now, you can sit in front of me.
Speaker : Stand straight now. Don't move.

Speaker : First, the top.
[Speaker puts the top on the Listener]

Speaker (obsessive) : Just as I imagined, this fabric is truly enhanced by your beauty. Look how well this lace collar suits you, it's superb.
Speaker : Perfect. Now, let me take care of the bottom.
[Sound of fabric]

Speaker (obsessive) : Hm, now it's even more beautiful like this.
Speaker : Oh, it's slightly loose here. Let me fix that.
[Speaker approaches and adjusts the outfit]

Speaker : Details are important, my dear. Everything must be in order.
Speaker : Hm, yes. That's better.

Speaker : There, it's done.
Speaker : Look at yourself in this mirror. See how magnificent you are.

Speaker : Hm, I was considering enhancing your appearance with some accessories, but you're already perfect.
Speaker : I suppose I could add a simple pendant. Here, this one.
[Speaker places a necklace around the Listener's neck]
Speaker : Excellent.
Speaker : It's very pretty, but in reality, you don't need adornments; you are enough on your own. You're simply breathtaking...
Speaker : Your presence alone is enough to overshadow everything else.
(...)

Speaker (leaning closer to the Listener's face) : No need to wonder why I noticed you immediately at the auction.
Speaker : Your face, so delicate, your skin soft as silk... You're a vision of grace and elegance, a living work of art that immediately captivated me.
[Speaker becomes slightly more obsessive]

Speaker : And it's not just your outer beauty that struck me...
Speaker : It's also that sparkle in your eyes, the way you carry yourself... Your presence alone is enough to hold my attention. You're much more than just a beautiful appearance; you're an extraordinary person.
(...)

Speaker : It's strange really. I find it hard to put into words what I feel.
Speaker : Is it love ? Hm... Perhaps...

Speaker (amused): What I know is that I no longer particularly want to put you behind glass. Looking back, it would even be a crime to hide your beauty in a cabinet.
Speaker : The mere thought of confining you now seems intolerable. You deserve to shine freely, under my gaze, of course.
Speaker : I don't just want to possess you. I want to appreciate you, cherish you, every day.
(...)

Speaker (sarcastic) : Who would have thought ? Me, the obsessive collector, searching for the perfect object, finds myself feeling something other than obsession.
Speaker (amused) : When I think that I had considered dissecting you, all of this seems very distant now.
[He moves closer]

Speaker : I suppose I am simply destined to be infatuated with you.
Speaker (more possessive) : But that doesn't mean I'll give up all control. You're mine, and I won't let anyone take you away.
(…)

Speaker (in a softer voice) : But you can be sure that I will protect you, always. I will take care of you, my love.
Speaker : Because you are much more than just a curiosity in my cabinet now. You are my partner, and I simply cannot let you go.

Speaker : We will stay together, forever...
(…)

2024.06.01 00:20 DRCherryBomb1 The Red Spaceship Won't Move Even Though I Have Already Determined The Movement Functions

Hello there! I'm a simple freshman to PyGame. I'm currently trying to make my own, basic spaceship game while using Tech With Tim's video as a reference as I'm still a beginner. Everything is going fine so far. Except for one thing, for some reason despite having a predefined function for moving the red spaceship, it still won't move even by holding the predefined keys for moving it. Here's my code: (Also FYI the reason I've defined some variables with capital letters is because I heard this way they are defined as constants, also sorry if my code looks bad I'm still a beginner).
''' import pygame import os
GAME_WIDTH = 900 GAME_HEIGHT = 600 MID_WIDTH = GAME_WIDTH // 2 RED_X = 200 RED_Y = 200 YELLOW_X = 700 YELLOW_Y = 200 SPACESHIP_SIZE = (40, 40) SPACESHIP_SPEED = 5 FPS = 60 GAME_TITLE = "Space Game For Dummies" WHITE = (255, 255, 255) BLACK = (0, 0, 0) RED = (255, 0, 0) YELLOW = (255, 255, 0)
pygame.init()
window_screen = pygame.display.set_mode((GAME_WIDTH, GAME_HEIGHT)) pygame.display.set_caption(GAME_TITLE) redSpaceshipOG = pygame.image.load(os.path.join("Pictures", "spaceship_red.png")) yellowSpaceshipOG = pygame.image.load(os.path.join("Pictures", "spaceship_yellow.png")) redSpaceship = pygame.transform.rotate(pygame.transform.scale(redSpaceshipOG, SPACESHIP_SIZE), 90) yellowSpaceship = pygame.transform.rotate(pygame.transform.scale(yellowSpaceshipOG, SPACESHIP_SIZE), 270)
def draw_window(window_screen, redSpaceship, yellowSpaceship, red_X, red_Y, yellow_X, yellow_Y): window_screen.fill(BLACK) window_screen.blit(redSpaceship, (red_X, red_Y)) window_screen.blit(yellowSpaceship, (yellow_X, yellow_Y)) pygame.display.update()
def red_movement(red_X, red_Y): keys_pressed = pygame.key.get_pressed() if (keys_pressed[pygame.K_w]) and (red_Y > 0): red_Y -= SPACESHIP_SPEED if (keys_pressed[pygame.K_s]) and (red_Y < GAME_HEIGHT - redSpaceship.get_height()): red_Y += SPACESHIP_SPEED if (keys_pressed[pygame.K_a]) and (red_X > 0): red_X -= SPACESHIP_SPEED if (keys_pressed[pygame.K_d]) and (red_X < GAME_WIDTH - redSpaceship.get_width()): red_X += SPACESHIP_SPEED
def main(): playing = True
while playing: draw_window(window_screen, redSpaceship, yellowSpaceship, RED_X, RED_Y, YELLOW_X, YELLOW_Y) red_movement(RED_X, RED_Y) for event in pygame.event.get(): if event.type == pygame.QUIT: pygame.display.quit() pygame.quit()

PayPal USD is on Solana!

While some of you were playing celebrity degen memecoin bingo, PayPal — the world’s largest payment processor — announced that its Paypal USD (PYUSD) stablecoin issued by Paxos is live on the Solana network.

https://x.com/solana/status/1795802766700605873
1/📣Breaking News: @PayPalUSD (PYUSD) is live on Solana!
PayPal USD stablecoin issued by @Paxos will leverage Solana and token extensions to serve over 30m+ merchants, empowering users with fast and secure stablecoin transactions.

Chat, this is huge. PYUSD is now available on essential apps like PayPal and Venmo, in addition to your cryptonative favs like @Phantom and @cryptocom.
Cousin @0xMert_ said it best: “This is a big W for the manlets, crypto, and payments as a whole.”

https://x.com/0xMert_/status/1795852174196404632
first it was Visa
then it was Shopify Pay
then it was Stripe
now it's PayPal
all on Solana
nfa

You can read PayPal’s open letter and whitepaper explaining its Solana adoption, but the tldr is: cost-effectiveness, high throughput, speed, and token extensions like confidential transfers for peer-to-peer, b2b, and micropayments for its 500+ million active user base.
In the words of Colosseum's @mattytay: "Solana; come for the memecoins, stay for the world's next generation payments network."

ok this is wild
paypal just launched its PYUSD stablecoin on solana (yeah i know. yawn)
but it seems to have a privacy feature they call “Confidential Transfers” that hides the transaction amounts of transactions????
this sounds a lot like “confidential transactions”, a feature bitcoin devs have been larping about for almost a decade but never built, and you’re telling me paypal users will have it first? LOL

2024.05.31 22:20 OneChrononOfPlancks A long overdue, and very heartfelt letter from Cleveland Booker, to Archivist Hy'Rell at the Eternal Gallery and Archive. (disco finale spoilers)

To: Hy'Rell [hy.rell@archive.ega.mw.edu]
From: Burnham-Booker, Cleveland "Book" III [book@michaelburnhamranch.sanc4.ufp]
Date: April 25, 3196
Dear Hy'Rell,
I hope you and your fellow archivists at the Eternal Gallery and Archive are well. I apologize for my delay in writing to you, it has been a wild five years since our encounter in the Badlands.
As you've surely heard by now, Michael and Discovery were successful in our mission to track down the Pro--- Uhh, the "Pro"-fessional-strength fertilizer formula referred to in the set of clues we were following.
Ultimately, Michael made contact with the, uh, original manufacturers, and decided that the fertilizer was too powerful to be left in the hands of any single... Gardener. And, the Federation has determined to restrict all accumulated knowledge about it, which should last at least until the survivors on Ruhn's Breen Dreadnought make it back to local space in around 15 years.
I apologize that I can't give more detail, but Starfleet has assigned its highest level of regulatory classification to this information, which I'm told in no uncertain terms means I am only allowed to allude to it in veiled references and innuendo, and only then once I am fairly confident the other party is already in-the-know.
I understand following the death of Ruhn, that Tahal and the other four Primarchs made overtures to repair their government's relationship with your Eternal Archive... Perhaps you will receive more data from them when the time comes.
I must admit I was originally hoping to use the... Umm... "Fertilizer" to restore the lost world of Kwejian. Although I know it could never bring back the people themselves, or the lost aspects of our culture, for a while it seemed there was the capacity to restore the Kwejian ecosystem, the World Tree, the interconnectedness and the diversity of Kwejian life; The life itself.
In a way, that would have preserved a great deal of our cultural identity, as an empathic people we always strove to remain connected with nature, a part of it. And it formed us, as well. Also, it would have been a wonderful (if bittersweet) homecoming, of sorts, for myself and the other surviving Kwejian refugees scattered about the Galaxy. sigh. Oh well.
Michael has set up a ranch-- That is, we've set up a ranch on Sanctuary IV, and I've planted the first of the two World Root cuttings in Michael's back garden.
This was actually our third attempt to plant the first cutting-- We first tried four years ago in 3191, but had to abort the attempt because of our fur-baby Grudge, "the Queen" (an Earth Maine Coon cat, with Augment DNA, descended from escaped experimental subjects from Earth's 21st century).
Grudge and Michael got along well, and Grudge adapted nicely when Michael took a leave of absence from Kovich to come make our home together here. (I believe Nhan was assigned as interim Captain to work with Commander Rayner while Michael was away.) But things changed for the worse once Michael became pregnant with our son, Leto... Grudge was not taking that very well, at all.
She systematically dismantled the handmade bassinet three times before we switched to programmable matter with a force-field, and this of course only angered Grudge further. She then turned her attention toward the garden-- Michael's Kaminaran Fredalias were a total loss, but luckily we managed to save the world root cutting in time while Grudge was distracted wrestling with the Reticulan Beauregard Weepers.
It took me three hours to remove all the weeper spines and to heal her acid burns from the weepers' digestive fluid. You can just imagine the difficulty of keeping a Maine Coon still for the dermal regenerator, I was scratched to hell. Another whole round for follicular stimulation was out of the question, so I just left the bald spots in her fur to regrow naturally. Served her right.
I did try to calm her down through the "new baby" anxiety; To reason with her using my Kwejian empathic abilities, but all she sent back was images and scents of blood, and lots and lots of fish. We replicated a lot of fish that year, to placate her, until she learned to hop on the table and replicate them herself.
We're keeping the second world root cutting in a portable transporter buffer, for safekeeping, but we still have the Tuli wood box on proud display! We keep our tricom badges in there whenever we're home, and Michael puts her wedding ring in when we're doing chores. Grudge used to like to knock it off the counter over and over, but eventually she got bored of it when we programmed the transporter to replace it instead of coming to pick it up off the floor ourselves.
We weren't able to enjoy landscaping again until Grudge passed away this year, at the age of 26. At least, we think she passed. She disappeared and there's been no sign of her. But we take comfort in that she lived out her final days chasing baby tranceworms back toward the river, stalking and riding the Spectral Elk through the forest. Which was initially a problem, because of her claws, but I equipped her collar to deploy a programmable matter Elk-saddle-- Which really worked a lot better than you'd think!
We're not sure exactly what happened to Grudge in the end, one day we found the image of a koala scratched into the dirt path in our sideyard (doodling was a hobby of hers), and there was Grudge's collar just sitting on the ground. We checked sensor logs, but there were no signs of intruders, no transporter traces, or any predators large enough to take a Maine coon. Our Queen, forever cloaked in mystery.
We've protected the garden with a fence made from scraps of wood, and replicated wire. Do you think that will be okay? We tried a force-field, but unfortunately the polarized electromagnetic fields attract tranceworms, as well as a colorful semi-luminescent elk-like species (the Spectral Elk I mentioned earlier). It turns out these Elk have a peculiar neuroelectric biochemistry, which allows them to get high by bonking their heads against vertices in the forcefield where the EM repeller envelopes overlap.
We're hoping the wood fence will be fine, so far the Elk seem somewhat (though not completely) less interested in bashing their heads against it. Michael has a theory that the Elk perceive the fence to be a sexual rival, and are attacking to assert dominance. I often wonder what threat on their original homeworld caused the Elk to be chosen for preservation, and brought to Sanctuary IV. Perhaps there were too many fences there.
Growing up on Kwejian, I remember the World Tree grew literally everywhere, so I have no reason to think it won't grow in our back garden. The dirt here is the same colour as on Kwejian. As a courier, I never did pick up a knack for gardening, but I've watched a few tutorials on subwave and the Starfleet database so I'm sure it will be fine.
When the tree grows large enough, we're thinking of moving the house into it. But that won't be for another... Three? Maybe five years? I should ask the computer. I love trees, right, but I don't really "know" trees, you know. Anyway.
So, that's the update from the Burnham-Booker clan, I suppose! Hy'Rell, once again I can't ever thank you and the Archive enough for what you've done for me, and the remainder of my people. Every time I climb in and out of our epic tree-house, I will think of you and-- Just a second, Tricom's beeping. Computer, pause recording...
Well Hy'Rell. Sorry about that, Michael and I were called back in on a new Red Directive mission for Kovich. As always, we left Leto in the care of the holo-nan.
I meant to transmit this letter to you on our way out, but I caught a Phylosian in the garden, tampering with the world root!
I had already captured them in a Kwejian empathic rage stasis field, and materialized a phaser from my sleeve, when I noticed the Phylosian wore a Starfleet tricom badge.
It turns out, Michael hired a Starfleet botanical conservation expert behind my back. I was devastated, hurt and betrayed by her sudden and inexplicable lack of faith in my gardening-- In me.
A sense of distance and distrust reappeared between us. I knew we needed to communicate, to connect, to resolve this conflict, but there was no time (due to the new Red Directive). So instead we departed together in silence, while the Phylosian ministered to our garden.
I can't tell you when we were sent-- That is, where we were sent, on our Red Directive mission. But it was rough going, trying to work as a team (for the sake of five major quantum realities, including our own) despite this heavy weight that hung between us.
But then, dangling over the clifflike edge of an obloid onyx asteroid... Pulled down toward a screaming event horizon from the shattered remains of the T'Kon multispatial dimensional supergateway... With our slippery grips on each other's wrists the only thing separating me from complete transdimensional spaghettification and eternal consignment to hyperoblivion...
A tear rolled down her cheek.
And she explained. Her doubts about my gardening skills were never meant to be a proxy for her trust in me as a person. Or as a husband. Or as a father.
She told me that communication is love, and she loves me, and she should have discussed the botanical plan for the world root cutting with me first, before hiring the Phylosian.
At this point my hand slipped, but I managed to grab ahold of her with my other arm at the last second... Unfortunately this caused me to lose my hold on The Artefact, which fell toward the event horizon and stretched into an impossibly skinny thread before disappearing forever and completely.
So I told her, ever since receiving the root cuttings from the Archive, as one of the last surviving Kwejian, I had always seen it as my responsibility to restore the World Tree. My burden to bear, and no one else's.
I explained that I was alone for so long as a courier before Michael came, and then I thought I was the last survivor of my people: The ultimate loneliness and isolation. I was so used to being on my own, it just felt wrong, unnatural to receive any help with it, let alone to ask for help.
Just then, the cliffside began to crack ominously.
Michael suppressed a sympathetic sob, and she reminded me: I am no longer alone. That I've never been alone, since the moment she came into my life.
She says that Kwejian lives on in both of us, through our connection, and in our son, Leto. No matter what happens to us. And she was so right. I can't believe I didn't see it before.
Thusly reconciled, we were then able to combine our efforts, redouble and renew our attempt to pull me up off the side of the eternal space cliff.
And that's when we finally lost our grip completely. I fell as if in slow motion, reaching up-- Reaching out, to her. Trying to project forgiveness through my empathic senses... And in my eyes.
I saw Michael, still dangling over the edge, the rocky cliffside surrounding and framing her like an ominous black mountain. Her eyes, wide with shock and disbelief, tears streaming freely. Her arm, outstretched, strained fingers twitching at emptiness.
I felt hope slip away.
Just then, something happened that I truly can't explain.
It was as though for just a moment both space and time shifted around us. This itself was not so unusual, Michael later theorized it was a residual Manheim effect caused by gravi-temporal shear from the shattered supergateway. But the experience was transcendent. I witnessed colors, shapes at that time, that I can't picture now and which I couldn't name.
But when reality re-settled around us, and our senses returned to normal, we were both somehow safely deposited back on the clifftop. As if by some loving hand, or paw, of a merciful and caring higher being.
And it was the strangest thing, Hy'Rell, but in that moment I could swear I heard a plaintive, longing "meowww," echo through the deafening ionic wind.
Michael and I were able to cross-patch our tricom badges, match the frequency variance of the ionic hurricane, and achieve enough pattern-enhancement to jump the quantum barrier and get back to the Prime-- Uhh, anyway we got back home. Where Leto was waiting for us with a crayon drawing.
He always draws Michael taller than me. Takes after his dad in that way, because that's how I see her as well.
While we were gone, the root sprouted its stem and first leaves. The Phylosian botanist, whose name is Peet, has decided it would be best to relocate the new World Sprout some distance from structures and dwellings, to a spot that can be safely nurtured and protected.
Michael says we can't live in a tree house, but I can build one some day for Leto. She hasn't given me a limit on size though.
We talked it over and decided we would like to once again entrust the remaining world root cutting to your capable hands within the Eternal Gallery and Archive. I've tucked it away in the Tuli wood box, and secured them into a quantum matter stasis packet (please see subspace attachment).
I have also enclosed one more item which I hope you will find worthy of your collection; A collar. Somewhat ornate, with a pressed-latinum tag. Contains tracking device (never used, since deactivated). It belonged to a Queen, who no longer has need of it.
Take care of yourself, Hy'Rell
Empathically yours,
Cleveland "Book" Burnham-Booker, III

2024.05.31 22:14 Cheap-Leadership-232 My (32f) partner (27m) and I are navigating his first relationship in 1.5 yrs of him solely dating me. Feel I am being given the responsibility of assuring his new gf through her own insecurities

Oh my god I’m sorry this is so long. Thanks in advance to anyone who reads.
I am 32(f). I am married to 31(m). I have a partner who is 27(m). I will refer to my partner as Red.
Red and I met through work, we no longer work together. We have had a relationship for about a year and a half now. In that time, aside from a few very short lived and casual relationships, Red has been solely dating me. I have been aware of and supportive of him using dating apps, meeting people locally or through Reddit. As I said he has not had a relationship really go past the “talking” or casual hookup stage for various reasons.
About a month and a half ago, Red told me that he was not actively looking to date. He said he was interested in making friends and sharing hobbies and interests. He met a woman (26?f) through a mutual interest/friends, I will call her Blue. He told me the first time they hung out, and said it was just as friends and he wasn’t looking to date. From what I understand, she pursued him, now they have started dating.
This has been really hard for me. This is the first time I have had to navigate Red dating someone, and it’s brought up a lot of feelings and insecurities for me. I also feel it happened very unexpectedly. She is in a fairly niche local scene that Red and I are also in, so it’s unavoidable for me to see her around at events. This causes me a lot of anxiety.
I am having very complicated feelings. As I said, I am married and have been with my husband for 12 years. This hasn’t always been easy for Red but he has managed and after a lot of time, work and reassurance he is in a place where he feels secure. He wants a primary relationship, he wants someone he can spend more time with and explore deeper relationship things with (lots of sleepovers, vacations together etc). He has always been communicative and honest with me about this.
As he and Blue have been dating, Red and I have had lots of talks. I have had feelings of insecurity and jealousy. This is coupled with feelings of self-loathing because I hate that I am having these feelings when Red has had to manage me having a husband the whole time we have been together. On my end, I have become accustomed to things being a certain way for a long time. Things changed very, very, quickly from “I am not pursuing dating and I just want to be friends”, to - I am dating this person, they will also be at events in the scene, we are posting about each other on social media, there are stuffed animals won on their dates displayed around his apartment, etc
I have been doing a lot of work personally to allow myself to acknowledge and communicate my feelings with Red, to actively challenge my mindsets, to sit in discomfort and to allow space and time for Red and Blue to experience NRE and build their relationship. My biggest concern has been to never stand in the way of Red dating Blue, to communicate honestly and to not request anything in how they engage changes due to my discomfort. I am committed to doing my own personal work - I just am having some challenges getting my heart and brain to agree. Red says he sees the huge amount of effort I am putting in.
In turn, Red has put a lot of effort into hearing my feelings, reassuring me, and spending intentional time with me. I have fear that Red will find everything he needs with Blue as a primary and not “need” me anymore. He has assured me that this will not happen, and he is always open to talking about hard things; he wants to hear my feelings; wants to reassure me. He has said that he has had a year and a half to navigate and grow, and I am just now being confronted with someone else being in the picture for him. He hasn’t made me feel guilty or bad about my feelings. We have the approach that feelings are always valid and it is our responses to those feelings that is the most important. I have helped him navigate similar things as he is helping me with now.
Red has said he doesn’t want anything in our relationship to change. I had offered to take a back seat to allow NRE to happen and them to explore their relationship. I have offered to not go to events in the scene so they can enjoy that time and space - I’ve offered to set boundaries for myself around expectations for communication and the time we spend together. I have been told that no one is asking me to do those things and that he doesn’t want our relationship to change or lessen.
The thing is though, I feel that I have had a lot of changes thrown at me very quickly. I am having to navigate difficult feelings and the fact is, our relationship HAS changed because I am no longer the sole person he’s dating. I feel that I am being asked to handle a lot of changes on my end, but to ensure that his experience of our relationship doesn’t change.
Yesterday Red told me that he and Blue had a talk and decided to slow things down. He has not told her details but has shared with her our general situation and that me navigating him having a girlfriend is a new thing for me, but we are actively working on it. Blue said to him that maybe they should slow down or have a temporary split for my comfort. Neither one of them want to do this. She suggested a temporary split while I adjust. She asked him to have a talk with me and then for him to reassure her that I am really, actually OK with them dating. Blue has said she feels “yucky” knowing that I may be having not-so-nice or difficult feelings as I navigate their new relationship and how it impacts and changes mine and Reds relationship. She says she doesn’t want anyone to feel hurt or have any negative feelings. She says that she has feelings of guilt and shame knowing that when they are on dates or fucking or whatever, that I may be navigating difficult or crappy feelings.
This brought out some very strong feelings for me. First off, I said that I don’t see how them doing a temporary split or break will help me to get used to them dating at all. I have never expressed that I wish for them to stop dating or change how they engage. I don’t see how them taking a break or whatever, will help me to manage my feelings about them dating.
It makes me feel that unless I can say I am 100% adjusted and totally hunky dory and happy with everything all the time, then I am causing issues with them and holding back their relationship. I want Red to be happy and have the freedom to explore new relationships and have them organically lead wherever they may. My feelings are my own, they are my responsibility, they stem from my own insecurities and discomfort. I am doing the work on myself, as hard as it is sometimes. I can’t promise that I will never have difficult to process or negative feelings.
I am feeling hurt and frustrated becuase I have put so much effort into managing my own feelings, focusing on me and Reds relationship while also allowing freedom for him and Blue. I feel that this puts me in an awkward and honestly shitty position being asked to provide reassurance for her that I am actually ok with all this. I see that as being between Red and I. Blue knows I know about her and knows that I am navigating some new things on my end, Red was totally transparent with her about me from the beginning. I didn’t appreciate being asked to have yet another hard convo that roots at my insecurities and complicated feelings, for the benefit of her and making sure her “yucky” feelings are assuaged.
I feel Iike I am being asked to make a call of whether they continue dating and engaging the way they want, or to slow things down. I’ve never asked for anything to slow down, I’ve focused solely on myself. I feel like everything is being put on me. Not only am I responsible for doing internal work on insecurities, perceptions and expectations for myself, to manage the changes happening in my relationship with Red relating to how we communicate and how/when we spend time together - but now I feel I am also being made responsible for fostering his relationship with Blue and providing assurances so she can feel comfortable enough to date him.
This feels like it’s asking a lot from me. It’s caused Red and I to have an actual argument for the first time. I’ve said it’s not my job or role to provide assurances and comfortability to his other partners. That is for them to navigate, and mine and Reds relationship is for us to navigate. We do not have a kitchen table approach, nor do we want one. I don’t make any demands of how they engage, I haven’t asked anything of her at all. I feel it’s Reds responsibility to manage their relationship and assure Blue, and I don’t need to be brought into it.
I have suggested me taking a step back from me and Reds relationship and have been told that it feels like I am telling him that he can’t have both me and a primary partner. That isn’t the case - I am acknowledging that our relationship is needing to change and shift for this new relationship to flourish. I am not expecting things to stay the exact same.
Red and I seem to be at an impasse. I am frustrated at being put in a position to assure Blue and “approve” their relationship so she feels more comfortable with her own feelings of shame and guilt. I feel that’s her own work to do, not mine. She needs to trust him when he says that we are working through things and I am managing - I don’t see why I need to take an active role in that process. I have done nothing but do my best to be supportive and not get in the way. Red is frustrated because he doesn’t want our relationship to change. He is frustrated that I am suggesting that part of me navigating these changes could involve me taking a step back and engaging less or differently. He said Blue is just “checking in” and making sure everything is still OK.
I am feeling extremely frustrated, defeated, upset, sad, insecure, and angry. I am hoping to get some other perspectives on this. Am I overreacting? Am I out of line for saying that I feel I’m being put in a crappy position?
EDIT - changed letters to names for ease of reading

2024.05.31 22:12 blurryturtle 2024 Roland Garros Men's & Women's Third Round - Saturday Matches

Just a quick shoutout to SalFO, Cloudy, and bekkahthecactus who lead the ATP, WTA, and Odds Comps so far <3

WTA Singles

Zheng vs Avanesyan :

Zheng has finally run into a tough opponent, but she’s projected to roll here anyway. Avanesyan and Blinkova seemed like the classic extended baseline battle but Avanesyan was dominant from the start and finished strong, winning 6-0 in the second. Zheng had a pretty match against Tamara Korpatsch, and she didn’t play her best but won comfortably.
Avanesyan is a really solid defender of the baseline and he has good speed. When she’s playing well (which she is), the hallmark of her game is extending rallies without missing. So the issue here is, Zheng has really good power and hits clean, but she can get into patches of a game or two where she makes a lot of errors. I would expect some momentum swings as a result, with Zheng holding on purely because she has such an effective serve. Her best deliveries are out wide and on clay that’s the optimal way to serve. She’s fresh, she has more experience, she has bigger power on both wings, and her opponents main hope is that she makes unforced errors. It’s a big ask for Avanesyan, but I don’t think this could ever be a blowout as well as she’s playing and as well as she’s played at this event in the past (4th round in 2022). Zheng in 3.

Andreescu vs Paolini :

Andreescu has wasted no time in returning to fine form on tour. After a surprise win against Sorribes Tormo, she managed to come from behind and outlast Anna Kalinskaya. It sets up a sort of combination of her first two opponents, as she now runs into Jasmine Paolini. Paolini has all the defensive ability of Tormo and the solid groundstrokes and ball movement of Kalinskaya. She’s having an absurdly good year, and has won almost all the matches where she’s been favored.
Paolini isn’t an automatic win here because Andreescu’s ceiling is undefined at this point. Her best game is good enough to beat Paolini, and in a comeback players tend to improve with each match. The level she played against Kalinskaya will probably get her outlasted here. Kalinskaya is really not at her best on clay and Paolini is very comfortable on the surface. I expect her to keep Andreescu moving and despite being outmatched, she’ll know that making this into an endurance contest can get her the match. Paolini in 2.

Svitolina vs Bogdan :

Bogdan got her first win against Pavlyuchenkova and Anastasia did not look too happy about it at the handshake. Bogdan played well, served well, and she has a 3 set win against Svitolina this year at the BJK Cup to give her a little confidence. RG of course, carries more weight for players than a team comp, but it’s good to get that first meeting out of the way so you are able to read shot patterns quicker and return serve a little better.
Svitolina had just a bit too much consistency for Diane Parry in their match. The ball kept coming back and Parry would eventually miss. That is really what I expect from the Bogdan matchup as well. Ana is playing good ball but hitting past Pavlyuchenkova is a lot easier than doing the same to Svitolina. Svitolina is playing solid, navigated two good players already in this draw, and she hits just as big as Bogdan. Given Bogdan’s level coming in, it might take some time for Svitolina to take the edge off. Svitolina in 3.

Rybakina vs Mertens :

Return of the Mert. Elyse Mertens and winning matches she’s supposed to win have been a steady combo on tour, but so far this year she hasn’t been that automatic. She got back on track with a good win against Petra Martic, and now she is punished for her wonderful play by facing one of the best players on tour. Rybakina won their last meeting in Brisbane convincingly, and though slow clay will give Mertens a better chance, she hasn’t really pulled this level of upset recently. Rybakina hits bigger constantly, and her serve can bail her out of trouble. Rybakina in 2.

Gracheva vs Begu :

Varvara Gracheva played excellent in round one to beat Maria Sakkari and she continued to hold that level in besting Bernarda Pera in a quick 2 sets. Her game oddly reminds me a bit of a mini-Federer when she’s on, not so much in the execution of shots but in the smooth transition to the next offensive opportunity. If she’s playing well and has control of the rally, it is exhausting to play her. Whether she can find those opportunities against Begu is a tough question.
I watched a lot of Begu vs Noskova, and Begu hit big and served decent, but what I liked most about her game is how she constantly kept the ball out of Noskova’s strikezone. Begu hit moonballs off both wings any time she was dragged wide, and Linda was letting them bounce up and drive her deep. It isn’t easy to just step in and hit balls on the rise, but your opponent is hitting moonballs to buy themselves time, so moving forward and taking tie away is exactly what you want to do. Begu is a step slow covering the court side to side, so Gracheva’s team will hopefully have told her to cut off the height early and often. Sure you’ll miss some, but when you know you’ll be given 20-30 opportunities to deal with that shot, it’s worth the risk to get in a good rhythm and force your opponent also to think about location on those defensive shots.
Gracheva is the hot hand here, and Sakkari is a better win that Begu. I still think I like Irina here. She hits big and constantly so off both wings, and she’ll have a slight edge on serve against Gracheva. This is shaping up to be a strange but excellent day of tennis. Begu in 3.

Andreeva vs Stearns :

Azarenka Andreeva lived up to the hype, and this match should be just as good. Stearns had never beaten Kasatkina before, but she kept her level high throughout and was able to beat her. Stearns has really good variety from the baseline and she looks to play offense on every shot. I would say she has a better chance than Azarenka to score on Andreeva, but her trouble with Kasatkina makes me think this is the end of the road. Andreeva is at least as solid defensively as Kasatkina on clay, and she hits the ball harder. It feels like a close match when you compare the two levels, but after a title run and a few rounds the question of how much tennis Stearns has left in her starts to be raised. I just think Mirra can defend here and that her approach is more straightforward. Andreeva in 3.

Keys vs Navarro :

Navarro is improving, but isn’t wholly comfortable on clay yet. She has the power and skill to score, but it doesn’t feel like her decisions are clear at times. Overall, she can beat players like Errani all day just on youth and ability, but against someone who’s thriving on the surface right now like Keys it feels like and uphill battle. For a long time, I’ve doubted Keys in matches because she’s only really good for a few weeks each year. She takes huge swings at the ball, and she can lose length at times. When that happens, she’ll lose 4-5 matches in a row. When she’s on though, it feels like she can beat anyone because of the offensive pressure that she applies.
In the last round Keys zipped Sherif, but then needed a tiebreaker to get through. It didn’t really seem like fatigue more than it did a letdown in focus. Sherif made sure to drag the match out as much as possible, and Keys sort of let up and had a tough time turning things back on. In this match, I like Navarro in the future but Keys today. Maybe Madison runs out of steam in this round, and maybe Sherif’s tiebreaker set was the beginning of the end. It feels like something will have to change about their respective levels for Navarro to get through here. Keys in 2-3.

Sabalenka vs Badosa :

THE BADOSA! Paula Badosa is back playing good tennis, and it’s very welcome. Given the scrappy wins she’s had so far, I don’t think she’s ready to challenge Sabalenka. Given Swiatek’s occasional troubles, the projected final of this event might be closer than people think. Sabalenka wins on consistency here. Sabalenka in 2.

ATP Singles

Djokovic vs Musetti :

Here it is. The moment we’ve all been waiting for. Is Novak Djokovic a legit title contender at this event or is he still in some slump? Or is it both? The last round against RCB he looked like himself again, but the style of his opponent doesn’t present any trouble for Djokovic. Here he’ll have a real test, so we’ll get a look at his actual level.
Musetti was down an early break against Monfils, but cruised from there. His ability to defend on clay is excellent. His power is legitimate. His serve is solid. His backhand is one of the best one-handers on tour. The kid is excellent, and he’ll have some unfinished business in his mind against Djokovic, since their 2021 clash featured Musetti up 2 sets before ultimately having to withdraw due to exhaustion.
Novak beat Lorenzo in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) in Monte Carlo this year, and that’s a tournament where he’s usually not expected to put forth his best effort. The workload to win MC is intensive, so Djokovic is usually just looking to get a few matches in. The first round version of Djokovic could lose to Musetti easily. The second round could beat him and should be favored by a set I would guess. The two-hander vs one-hander has been a matchup that the good two-handers have dominated. Musetti is a bit more passive than you want to be against Djokovic, and he hangs a little deep in the court which can make it tough to score on Novak. Djokovic’s rust in big matches will be on display, so I don’t think there’s any way this is smooth sailing, but he should win. I have him losing to Zverev later on, but this feels like a challenge he should overcome and the perfect wakeup call for us to get a look at his commitment and focus at this tournament. Djokovic in 4.

Cerundolo vs Paul :

Tommy Paul crushed Fognini. Cerundolo beat Misolic in straight sets. Prior to Paul roasting his opponents I had him losing to Cerundolo here, but I saw some of the early season “wtf” attitude from Ceru in the second set of his last match. Misolic is a solid player and he hits hard, but Cerundolo entered the match in great form. He was cruising, but once the match got tight he started forcing shots again. It’s like he doesn’t recognize that the pressure moments are pressure on his opponent since he hits so solid and is always looking for forehands. If he sprays unforced errors and wastes break points against Paul, he’ll lose. There’s no fun way to say it, this is a mental test for Cerundolo.
These two just played in Madrid, and Cerundolo won in 3. Most of their previous matches have gone to a deciding set, and that’s a strong possibility here. Cerundolo is hitting clean and playing like himself again, but Paul is a former junior RG champion and is coming in in solid form. Both are doing most of the work with their forehand, and I don’t really see a big difference between them other than Cerundolo having dropshots, and Paul being more composed. In the end, I’m always willing to go with the guy who fights til the end rather than the reactive one. Paul in 5.

Fritz vs Kokkinakis :

Idk how Kokkinakis managed to turn that match around or get to the third round of RG, but good for him. He played hard and he earned the win. It sets up a match he won’t hate his chances in, but it still should be the end of the road. I’m interested to see how Fritz deals with Thanasi’s power. He’s hitting really heavy right now, and Fritz has a very Western forehand so it could give him a little trouble manufacturing depth. They aren’t bad players, but Fritz’s last few losses on clay (Rublev, Zverev, Michelsen) all hit the ball hard as their main approach so this might take more than 3 sets. Lajovic fared well but he’s excellent on clay. Kokkinakis should get a look at winning a set, but more than that seems unlikely because Fritz is a better server, and despite the surface this feels like a serving battle. Fritz in 4.

Etcheverry vs Ruud :

Pretty crazy but relatable forfeit for Rinderknech. He was up 2 sets to 1 against Etcheverry when he got mad after a point and kicked an advertisement banner. The banner was a little more solid than his foot, and he ended up injuring himself and having to forfeit. As a fan, it’s an eyeroller. As a friend, I think you drive him to the hospital, but roast him in the groupchat. I know his DMs on instagram right now are full of complaints, but sometimes it takes something like this for you to learn a valuable lesson and finally calm down.
It sets up a tougher match for Ruud I think. Rinderknech seemed like he had a good chance at winning, and Ruud can run him around and win in 3-4. Against Etcheverry, the rallies will be longer and Ruud’s backhand will have a heavier workload. He’s just come off a 5-set thriller against ADF, so I’m not expecting him to win in straights. Etcheverry is the type of players who wears you down over a long match, so I think Ruud will get the first set here, and ultimately hold on for the win. Yes, Etch hits big enough to break down Ruud, but I think when Ruud finally starts making errors, it’ll be trying to make sure he keeps the ball in play because he’s at the end of a set and he has the match nearly done. Casper seems to reset well, and Etcheverry hasn’t been at his best. Ruud in 4.

Zverev vs Griekspoor :

Zverev, or zverbb as my autocorrect has begun referring to him, is cruising through this draw. This will be a tough one for him, because Griekspoor matches up well against big servers for some reason. He’s had some classic clashes against Hurkacz, and his server is effective. Griekspoor doesn’t hit the biggest on tour, but rumors of an arm issue can be somewhat dispelled after watching him dispatch Darderi. He’s wearing a sleeve on his right arm, but he’s also putting a lot of pace on his forehand. Tallon is solid enough from the baseline to rally with Zverev, and Zverev’s shot selection is conservative enough that he’ll have a hard time ending rallies. Where this match shifts for me is at the finish line. If Griekspoor is up a break, Zverev I think will always be able to dig in and get a look at retrieving it. The opposite just isn’t true due to Zverev’s greatly improved serve. Zverev finally drops a set I think, or winds up in a tiebreaker. Zverev in 3-4.

Kovalik vs Rune :

I actually thought Flashscore had glitched when I saw Kovalik had won in 5. Flashscore if you’re reading this, send me free stuff. Flashes, or scores. Whatever you got is fine. Don’t “we don’t actually sell those, we’re an app” me like those goofs at Sofascore. Thanks in advance. Anyway, somehow Kovalik won. It’s probably the best result of his career, and it’s coming after his career is over. I love it. Up next is a classy affair against Holger Rune, who honestly won a great match whether he realizes it or not. Flavio Cobolli is a machine. He pushes the pace constantly, and pretty much everyone he’s faced cracks eventually. Rune was playing excellent in this match, and he still barely squeaked by in a fifth. I love an early scare for a big seed because it wakes them up, elevates their level, and it also lets them play freely if they do happen to escape. I think Rune is too good here, but watching Kovalik work points with his slingshot forehand will be a lot of fun. Rune in 3.

De Minaur vs Struff :

I like the upset here but I think it’s close. ADM has made great improvements to his game on clay, and he just beat Munar in straights which is a solid win. He’s always had a bit of trouble with powerful hitters, and Struff fits that bill. Struff has won 2 of their 5 meetings, including a straight set win on clay in Monte Carlo last year. He serves bigger on the surface, the pace of the court gives him time to find forehands, and he’s excellent at net. It’s so weird to be saying this about a guy who was the most inconsistent player on tour besides Benoit Paire at one point, but he’s playing great here and beating Burruchaga and Bublik in straight sets is an excellent resume.
Alex can extend rallies and move Struff to earn errors, and his usual strategy to isolate the backhand will be effective here. That being said, it’s just not the best conditions for him, so Struff should have a lot more looks at breaking serve over the course of a long match. Struff in 4-5.

Machac vs Medvedev :

Ok. Finally. Five and a half hours of court-time after we speculated Machac might gas out, he finally did. Navone made him work 1 extra shot per point to score, and it paid off. Then, after winning two sets in a row to set up a fifth, Machac still won. The kid’s forehand is incredible, and despite fatigue his conditioning has held up. His thighs are cartoonishly large, and I don’t know why I’m pointing that out but I know you’ve seen it too.
While Machac was grinding through a 3.5 hour war, Medvedev got a forfeit. Machac has the game to hit past Medvedev on this surface, but I think Daniil is a bit more varied in his approach than Navone, and his reach means that he won’t have to do the same running. If Machac was playing this first round, I’d like his chances, but here too much is working in Medvedev’s favor. Extra rest, extra wear and tear on his opponent, Machac having gone on a deep run the week before, etc. Medvedev in 4-5. I don’t know when Machac will tire in this one, but Medvedev is always looking to outlast the powerful offenses and he will know exactly how to navigate once he sees Machac begin to make errors. I also think he’ll isolate the backhand rallies and while Navone has an excellent backhand, he offers pace and spin whereas Daniil gives you nothing to work with. It’s an easier ball to hit, but you have to supply your own pace which can be fatiguing both mentally and physically.

2024.05.31 22:06 super_hot_juice Cinema Pro: (almost) Definitive guide to Why and How to use it + tips & hacks

Cinema Pro is no more and none of its features are getting ported into new app Video Pro mode, so this is a perfect opportunity to release this (almost) definite guide as to when and how to record video footage in Cinema Pro. All of us are pretty much aware of most its shortcomings this app has but we are not going to complain or talk about them here, instead we are going to celebrate EOL of Cinema Pro.
I could bet my pet that about 90% of Xperia users ain’t touching Cinema Pro because they feel uncomfortable using it, that includes mobile camera enthusiasts. Instead, they go to BASIC Video or Video Pro and I don’t blame them as learning curve in Cinema Pro is pretty steep but on the other hand this camera app has very flexible workflow and results can be stunning if you practice enough.
So, first things first, none of the video camera apps will make your videos gorgeous by itself. Filming a video, much like a taking a photo, is all about framing your shot. Keep in mind that Cinema Pro is meant for static shots and short pans due to lack of auto ISO adjustments. If your shot is poorly framed not even a Burano can save your butt. Frame your shot properly before you even touch record button. But before you even do that here are few things you should read first to get yourself familiar with Cinema Pro.

Here is what Cinema Pro offers and can do that other Xperia camera apps can’t.
CLIP METADATA
This probably was not your first thought I was gonna bring up, right? Unlike Video Pro which does not save any advanced metadata in video clips Cinema Pro does and it does it quite good.
When you go to Cinema Library and play any clip inside your project (not final video) you can tap on ellipsis at upper right corner and choose Details. Brown window will pop up with following metadata such as ~resolution~ and ~FPS~ but besides that we also get ~Look~ we picked, ~Lens~, ~Stabilization~, ~WB~, ~ISO~, ~Shutter~ speed, ~Focus~ and ~Audio~ level. If we import the clip in desktop software we also get ~bit depth~, ~color space~, ~EOTF~, ~format~, etc.
Why is this important? If you are really making a video project there is a great chance that you imported those clips on your desktop OS and that you are editing or retouching them inside some desktop software. Desktop software has power of utilizing metadata for your convenience when manipulating and exporting the video, matching shots, doing color correction or just doing offline editing.
This will make your life a lot easier. As you will see in my sample footage below, I’ve actually automated the burn-in with the Cinema Pro clip metadata (Looks, WB, Shutter, etc.) to make each clip display the metadata on-screen without me having to punch it in manually.
METERING
If you don’t have Metering bar enabled in your UI you are doing it wrong. Go to yellow hamburger menu to the right and tap Customize DISP and make sure you have Metering Manual set to ON.
Again, what is this important? Because of two things. Cinema Pro dims the display all the time when it’s running for some reason (presumably to better show HLG result on screen) so if you have Xperia 1, 1II, 1III, PRO-I you will be struggling to see anything while being outdoors. Situation is not any better on 1IV and 1V but it’s more usable. Do not trust your display when it comes to exposure. Instead trust your Metering bar and always shoot around 0 if possible, you will thank me for this once you view your clip on a HDR UHD TV. If it’s too bright outside you can try lowering the shutter speed to level the exposure just make sure do not have fast moving subjects in frame such as cars because it will look choppy.
Second, we’ve already established that Cinema Pro is meant for static shots or gentle panning but if you have to do something “wild” such as POV or going from one lighting condition to other (and sometimes that means just a simple camera tilt from ground up to the sky) you will need Metering to try to find the middle value. Do a test run without recording first and pay attention at the meter to see how many stops is the spread between one frame to another. Lets say you adjusted ISO/Shutter for the 0 at the beginning of your camera movement and once your done with the move metering is showing +2. In that case you will need to set your beginning value at -1 in order to get to +1 in the end to contain both highlights and shadows. Just keep in mind that most of the time your aggressive tilts will be ranging from 0 to well above or under -/+2 and in that case, you will have to rethink what you want to do. That’s right Cinema Pro is a slow burn and unnecessary methodical because it applies cine camera philosophy to crappy mobile sensors.
WDR with Stabilization
Here is another one that is not available inside BASIC or Video Pro unless you have 5V or 1VI device. WDR or Wide Dynamic Range option is made for Cinema Pro period. Cinema Pro was pretty much useless until WDR options popped up in PRO-I. So, what does it do? It records three frames at once and then stack them together to make one frame. Camera is recording at 120fps and then outputs 30/25/24 fps as final result hence why it’s not available at 60fps in any app. Using WDR in Cinema Pro you contain the highlights which is impossible to do in SDR mode unless you are in some dimmed environment.
General rule is to always have the WDR on but if you can do it without do it. There is no false color option in Cinema Pro but if you toggle between WDR and SDR you will see blown out highlights in SDR as some mushy color on display. It’s quite easy to spot the difference. Unlike in Video Pro in Cinema Pro WDR does not introduce purple cast in dark/black areas when shooting in low(er)-light conditions. Cinema Pro has a bigger threshold when shooting in low-light before introduces purple cast in blacks compared to Video Pro as long as you do not shoot in N/A Look (you shouldn’t be shooting in N/A like ever but more on that later). Video Pro utilizes WDR quite poorly, in daylight scenes it drops the gain making dark areas even darker which boosts the contrast to a point where you get that Pixel zombie decomposition like human faces. Cinema Pro does NOT do that, instead it only affects the highlights mostly.
Drawback of WDR in both Cinema Pro and Video Pro requires separate paragraph because it’s a big issue. Whenever you have high frequency texture in your shot such as tiny rubble road (asphalt) or stone mosaic wall you will get texture floating effect like texture is rearranging itself. It’s super trippy. That issue persists because development team didn’t master the frame stacking while filming. Those three frames that get to be one do not alight properly with the next stacked frame when it comes to big areas with tiny patterns.
But one good thing that also requires its own paragraph is video stabilization with HLG WDR option turned on. As previously mentioned, that combo is not possible in Video Pro or BASIC modes but it is in Cinema Pro. How? Well Cinema Pro crops top and bottom of 16:9 footage to 21:9 so it has some wiggle room to give as some basic stabilization. Stabilization is nothing spectacular but it doesn’t crop in the image in order to enable stabilization like Video Pro does. In other words, it doesn’t take Video Pro stabilized cropped in frame to enable stabilization. It shoots native UHD which is really important to preserve the quality unlike both Video Pro and BASIC that crop in UHD frame to turn on stabilization and then upscale the frame back to UHD. Cinema Pro does not do that.

NIGHTSHOOTING
Cinema Pro does really good night shots due to its flexibility to adjust Looks and auto white balance which I think is superior to Video Pro/BASIC. Funny things is that all of the exposure environment shortcomings during the daytime are not such a big deal during the night time because streets are evenly lit by light poles. So you have more freedom to pan, tilt and walk around while filming in Cinema Pro at night time then during the day. Here is a winning combo to make the night shot as good as possible: ~SDR + VENICE CS + AUTO WB unlocked~. Pretty straight forward. I find VENICE CS greatest strength to be default Look for nighttime as it’s easy on ISO, doesn’t boost contrast and has the least noise compared to some other looks. That doesn’t mean you can’t play around with the Looks during the night, if street lighting is annoyingly yellow you can use Cool/Blue60 +A to introduce some cool gray into the mix. And with the mention of other color profiles this brings us to the most important and the biggest feature of Cinema Pro, the Looks section.
LOOKS + TEMPERATURE + A/B + G/M Adjustments
This alone is the biggest deal in Cinema Pro app and this alone is what most of the users have no idea how to tweak and manipulate. If you thought rack focus is the number one feature in Cinema Pro, well I can assure you it’s number two right after this super flexible image manipulation output. Before we start discussing looks you have to keep in mind there is one factor in equation here and that’s Whitebalance. Most of the users stick with VENICE CS and don’t use any other look because by default all the looks are in your face when left in Auto whitebalance mode. Even less users who default to VENICE CS fiddle with whitebalance to unlock the full potential of image looks manipulation. Before you start playing with the looks you have to go to yellow hamburger menu and ~change WB MODE to TEMPERATURE~ instead of Preset.
With Temperature mode turned on you now have the option to set desired temperature in kelvins as well as to play with A/B and G/M sliders. What those sliders do? AB slider stands for Amber and Blue but names are inverted on axis so B will be to the left and A to the right. You can actually go quite wild with AB as our eyes are a lot less sensitive to warm and cold adjustments. GM slider stands for Green and Magenta and axis works just as the letters, green to the left and magenta to the right. GB sliders requires quite slight nudges in both directions because our eyes perceive color tilt very aggressively. You might want to use GB slider to adjust for human skin or just go artistic on a certain look.
You might ask yourself what the difference between setting up temperature and pushing AB sliders and I could tell you the order it needs to be done to make a proper impact on the picked Look.
1. You always adjust Temperature first. Between 4700K and 5500K is considered daylight in Cinema Pro (forget 6500K as you will crush it with amber). That’s at least how my eyes perceive it. If you pick lets say Strong/Blue100 look you will want to go to 7000K to neutralize it and then add some of A to make it shift from cold to warm look. Oh yeah it’s possible, so suddenly you just changed the bluest of the blue looks into yellow look.
2. Now you fiddle with AB/GM sliders for finer adjustments. AB will have more of an impact if you stick between 4700K-5500K but if you go below or over those Kelvins AB slider will get weaker. GM slider on the other hand will stay powerful and affect any highlight there is in an image.
3. Combine these two to completely alter any Look you pick.
*In order to follow the Looks description and how you could manipulate them, I will provide the links with video samples down below so you could watch them while reading the rest of the post.
WATCH 4K separate clips in order as described
WATCH 4K all the clips combined into one movie file following the order of description
(all files are in Rec2020 + eotf gamma 2.4 for better color representation but stripped of HDR)
Shot setup consists of warm neutral headphones, white coffee cup, glass of water to see highlights behavior and ugly yellow table and green trees. It's a shame I forgot to put red pack of cigarettes or something as reds are crazy different depending on the look you choose.
Soft/Yellow40 gain req: high contrast: lowest texture: softest grade: non-unifying offset: medium hdr: bright
This is the very interesting one and when combined with the right scene it can look marvelous. Soft look is your Orange & Teal go to look pretty much. It’s not very obvious but it’s not subtle either. One of the major traits of this look is really the softer image, not as sharp as let’s say Bright but because of that it mitigates artifacts quite nicely. Keep in mind that this look requires quite a gain so you will be boosting ISO until you reach the 0 in almost every situation. But because this looks require lots of additional stops it’s very grateful for bright environments. It has medium contrast but it can propel highlights quite high, things like neon signs look like glowing neon signs so it has a strong HDR effect which can clip easy. It doesn’t have unifying image trait, so if you are into color graded look this one will not offer that. That’s kind of a given considering it’s balancing out between orange and teal. If you want to unify it then your best bet is to shift it toward cool temperature or push A slider all the way to the left while introducing some magenta with M slider to the right. Soft/Yellow60 can’t completely switch from all blue to all yellow so it’s altering offset limit is medium.
Auto WB look for Soft/Yellow40 is quite decent but if you have some yellow patches, they will pick up some green tint. To remedy that just add some M like 1.x and add splash of Amber like 1.5 to 3 to be sure. If you want to cool down the image just drop Kelvins down or go crazy with B slider. On the other hand if you want to neutralize to get as close to white as possible you will need to add M1.5 or more together with cooler Kelvins. If you are shooting neutrals with this Look make sure you kill green cause it will overtake the whole image.
Where this Look kicks some major but is in a scene where you have brown wood veneer and blue/teal walls or panels. You will get an awesome O&T look out of it.

Opaque/Blue20/Yellow60 gain req: medium contrast: medium texture: sharp grade: unifying offset: medium hdr: medium
Another one that gets overlooked due to poor AUTO WB looks. When set to default WB it looks muddy and sepia like so most of us don’t know what to do with it. You will be shocked now if I tell you this should be your 2nd go to Look right after Bright. Yup, VENICE CS is not even in top two and I will elaborate why when we get to it. One thing to know in order to use this look you need to modify it from the get go. You need to kill that yellow and boost ISO for a stop or stop and half compared to Bright.
Opaque is great for skintones as they are easily adjusted with AB/GM sliders. Image is very creamy despite having enough clarity and medium contrast. If you underexpose you get some deeper contrast without ruining the creamy image. It’s great for shooting outdoor people gatherings, landscapes on a mute and cloudy day or any outdoor activity. Indoor is kind of tricky due to tungsten lighting but manageable although its not as appetizing as outdoor shots. Keep in mind when shooting at golden hour you will need deeper adjustments to get that sepia out and get the gold in. On any other condition it’s super easy to neutralize the image, you don’t have to push temperature nor sliders too far to get it just right. HDR effect is subtle and not over the top, proper medium and saturation is quite clever despite being a sepia preset. Colors are not muted by any means unless they have some brown in them. If you are a fan of grading I could assure you Opaque has quite unifying image effect no matter if you shoot warm, neutral or cold which is great. Transforming the look to complete cold or warm is tricky as it always keep that mud/sepia yellow in highlights.
To neutralize the look at daytime all you have to do is drop the temp around 4000K or push B slider to your liking. You can always do cold temperature to kill sepia and bring back some heat by pushing A slider. If you want to shoot gold tones then keep it around 5000K and adjust A to your liking while balancing GM.
This look produces super deep and rich reds, amazing reds. And if you combine that red with something beige or sand color like you will get a match made in heaven. Filming bars with brown furnishing packed with people is a treat as well. Shooting at night time in street lights is also a treat for this look.

Cool/Blue60 gain req: med to hi contrast: medium texture: sharp grade: very unifying offset: low hdr: medium
In a nutshell this is a faux bleach bypass or silver look if adjusted right. Together with Soft this has to be the most creative usage look offered. Unlike Soft this one is very easy to setup and results are sharp. At the first glance users might be confused what’s the difference between this one and Strong/BU100 as both look quite similar in Auto WB mode. But once you go out of auto look and start adjusting it soon you figure out that Cool/BU60 look has no vibrance and that’s what makes all the difference compared to all other looks. Gain adjustment to get to 0 is only like 1 stop compared to Bright or VENICE CS. Clarity is right on the par with others and contrast at proper sweet spot. HDR effect is tad bit mute but not by much and it works. And now if you ever wanted a look that makes the whole image like its graded as a whole, look no further (pun intended) than this one.
If you pay close attention, you can tell from the get go that this has silver look to it but it just needs to be released. Those familiar with bleach bypass look will know exactly what to expect from this one. If left in Auto WB you will get nothing but as soon as you dial A slider in more than a half you are waking it up slowly. If you want to get rid of the major blue cast you want to push temperature to 7000K and adjust sliders to your liking. If you drop the exposure, you will get that dramatic film look. Again, this look is quite easy to work with but it’s not flexible, don’t expect major transformations on the other end. It’s a one trick pony and it does that very well.
The best-case scenario for Cool is street photography with lots of metal on it. Cars, machines and silver or gray stuff blend in while human skin remain distinguishable. Interior shots are also great if you have to render a cold, clinical environment like office or a hospital or police station. It’s also your go to look if you want to make anticipation in the video.

Strong/Blue100 gain req: high contrast: low texture: soft grade: very unifying offset: highest hdr: bright
Turn day into a night and night into dusk. This is the most flexible look as it can get from one spectrum to the other without much casting. It’s not called strong for nothing; it really grades the whole image with a single hue. Despite being in your face it actually keeps the contrast on lower side which is very good as you can always dial it in with drop of exposure. Clipping in highlights can occur because of the nature it unifies the picture.
Because this look can go from cool to fire it can get neutral, although neutralizing it is not that simple affair as it’s with Opaque. Best way to get there is to adjust temperature. If hanging around neutral you will get image with blue cast over it. The way I see it this one is supposed to be opposite of Opaque while hitting harder. You might find some creative usage for this one if you want to go abstract and saturated. Similar to Soft look if you film contrast scene that has both cold and warm hues in it you will get that cross axis between the two and nothing in between.

Bright/Blue20/Yellow60 gain req: low contrast: highest texture: sharpest grade: non-unifying offset: low hdr: brightest
Your first go to profile when filming with Cinema Pro. It’s the closest one to Video Pro and closest one that looks like regular picture profile. If you are not looking for a creative look or any look in general this is it. It requires little to no gain adjustment which means it will not suffer from gain artifacts, it has the highest contrast and sharpest details for that mainstream image look (I do not count N/A as picture profile). But right now, there is a huge flaw that has to be addressed with this profile; it can’t capture pure reds no matter what. All reds are burgundy or violet unfortunately. But it nails down blues and teals like a pro.
On the other side it is super easy to balance out the image, its super easy to shift it to warm, cold, green or magenta. There is a quite big of a spread in temperature before image gets painted blue or yellow. It requires small nudges and results are visible right away. It plays well with the skin tones, no issues there. Where it excels is the HDR highlights. This profile kills it when there is shimmer in the view, metallics and all kinds of crazy and contrast stuff. HDR effect is exaggerated and it looks so oomph on a TV. Bright also nails down auto wb from the box so you can set it to auto and forget about it. Overall, it’s easiest to work with and sunny outdoors are a treat for the eyes. Usage of this profile equals that of Video Pro so you can use it anywhere you like. Video Pro is the direct competitor to this Look and while Video Pro can do saturated reds Bright/BU20/YE60 has a tad bit more organic feel despite being quite similar.
This is general purpose Look and being like that it doesn’t offer color grading effect nor it has any offset abilities of color transformation (unless you go completely blue 3200K or completely yellow 7500K).

VENICE CS gain req: low contrast: high texture: sharp grade: non-unifying offset: low hdr: bright
Default look and the one that’s most talked about and the one that most people use. First of all the look itself is fine but it is rather limited. It has nothing to do with Venice color science but it doesn’t have to honestly. It emulates log like image but without any flexibility of the log. It has very low ISO requirements and it’s the brightest look out of them all. Like mentioned above that makes it a go to look for low light shots. All other aspects of this look are almost on par with Bright look so I think these two go hand in hand when you want to lay off saturation and dial down blacks. In other words, don’t try to bring in VENICE CS footage into post to try to bring back vividness. It doesn’t work but that’s why there is Bright look for stuff like that. Unlike Bright look VENICE CS can capture red colors properly.
If you want to shoot haze, mist and other soft scenes VENICE CS is a dream. If you generally want to shoot relaxing stuff VENICE CS is the one to go for. Just don’t treat it as a log footage but rather as a looks footage. HDR is bright enough and it contains highlights really good. When it comes to exposure its quite flexible so margin of error is low.

Warm/Yellow80 gain req: medium contrast: high texture: sharp grade: most-unifying offset: lowest hdr: medium
This is supposed to be opposite of Cool, at least in theory. In reality we have a huge cast of orange and brown all over the screen. It’s really strong color cast and you can only manipulate it do a certain degree. It doesn’t require high ISO, it has deep contrast, good clarity and it contains highlights in HDR. On the artistic department there is vey little you can do with this. Cast is like three times stronger sepia of Opaque look. The only use case I found is when you want to turn something into golden look. Just like how Cool is silver look Warm is supposed to be gold look. But again, to my eyes it aligns more to Opaque deeper side than actual warm/gold. Shooting some neutral-colored scenery and cooling down the temperature below 4000K might give some artistic effect. This is a very limited look to play with.
There is nothing to say about N/A and Soft Monochrome except that you should never shoot in N/A it’s just horrible and if you want BW video you at least have an option.

So conclusion, Cinema Pro besides all of its shortcomings and some are pretty serious, has few features of brilliance that were never ever seen in any camera app third-party or OEM before and most likely we will never see those features again. Sony’s biggest sin with Cinema Pro is not omission of features but rather NOT improving up on what’s already in there. They just let it rot. I guess at one moment at it’s inception Cinema Pro had a great roadmap where it should go but then new management came in and shifted focus from cinema video to photography and v-logging.
Cinema Pro is dead, long live Cinema Pro. Go ahead and make some projects with it.

2024.05.31 20:11 Athlonfer Missing the funeral

I've been trying to record my experience in a post for hours, because it left me with a flood of thoughts swirling around in my brain. I feel like it's best that I just get to the point and start right at the beginning of events. It has been about a week since it happened, when I got a restricted delivery right as I stepped through my door to leave for work.

First weird thing that stood out to me is that even though it was a restricted delivery, which means it's supposed to be, well, taken good care of, this package was tattered and discolored, as if it was on its way to me since the 50's. As if that wasn't enough, the contents of it made me feel like I was about to swallow my own tongue.

"Dear SiMadam, you are hereby invited to say your last goodbyes to (I won't mention my friend's name here) after their untimely passing" it read, followed by the date and the location. It was devastating news, as is any news of someone you knew passing away, but what's even worse is that there wasn't even a single word about what happened, because it was definitely not of natural causes, "It couldn't be!" I thought, although I haven't kept in constant contact with this friend, he was supposed to be perfectly healthy, in his mid 20's, therefore foul play and accidents are the only options left and it feels like this is something that should be mentioned.

So when the day came, I drove to the specified location, still in disbelief of where I'm going, I arrived 15 minutes early, I thought that was respectfully early but not overly early, I mean, I have never actually been to a funeral since I was really young. I saw a few people already taking seats in the hall, and seeing the type of casket on the table at the very end of the room with a bright, almost heavenly light shining on it that it would be an open casket funeral, although there was no cadaver, but I was early, so it's probably still being prepared to be presentable, and we'll be asked to leave the hall while they place the body right? Right.

Ten minutes passed and a crowd filled each row of seats, turning the beige room into almost a dark void. Meanwhile, no cadaver arrived, on the other hand the eulogist did, probably to tell us to temporarily leave the hall or that's what I thought, but no, he started the ceremony by unveiling the memorial display but, it was empty. Correction, only my friend was missing from it. At first I thought it was a malicous edit by a salty underpaid employee and was about to make a scene and then the terrifying fact fully reached my brain. Everyone around me was mourning, crying, blowing their noses, reminiscing about old times.

Could they not see that the subject of the ceremony was lacking in their "last moments present with us" as the eulogist put it? I was deeply uncomfortable and as the funeral went on and I kept glancing at the casket it grew into panic and confused fear that manifested itself as sweat droplets all over my back, which despite the heat of the outside temperature and my suit kept feeling like it was ice cold.

After what feels like forever it was over. As if released from my chains of torment, I leapt up from my seat with a gasp. I ran up to the memorial display, quickly placed the flowers I brought, said goodbye to "Mr. NoShow" and ran home to smoke away the stress and pass out. When I awoke the next day I was sure to find myself realizing it was one of those dreams that felt all too real. Unfortunately it was quite the opposite, as I checked my mail, I saw the local newspaper of our district with an obituary, of my friend whom once again was not visually present where he should be.

I could not just accept this, I started calling some attendees with the guise of asking if they're okay, but really I just wanted to check if they'd only acted like part of a crowd just as I did or did they really not sense that anything was wrong, unfortunately the worst was confirmed. Not only that, but even when their name was mentioned it sounded as if it was distorted, it was as if he was a drawing in a comic book panel that got erased but the other characters still acted like he was there. It was an awfully lonely experience.

Two days passed, with still a glimmer of hope I looked up my friend's name. Suprisingly I found him online, posting photos, in Queensland, Australia? Day 25 of moving? Right on the day of HIS funeral. I spoke to him less than a week before I got the letter and there was no talk of moving at all, in fact not even his backdrop during our videocall changed from his usual office room. If my predicament didn't seem like the result of a creative brain during deep sleep than I can assure you it gets worse. One thing I found was a day old local article, another obituary, with my name and once again no photo where it should be, the second thing I found was my friend's newest post, having a beer with me, 10 minutes ago. So there I was apparently, a recently passed away person, while also partying in Australia, but in actuality standing in my living room, crapping myself from fear.

Today it escalated further, the envelope the invitation was in vanished, but I took out the invitation itself and stashed it in my drawer so I quickly checked it, it's still there. At first it seemed normal, well as normal as something like this can be, except for the spine chilling detail that I read my own name on it. The date for the funeral? The exact date when I found my obituary. This all happened soon after I attended. Out of any invitation I cancelled on in my life this should have been it.

I don't know what the solution is, I don't know how this is happening or why. My neighbours still talk to me so it's obvious I'm not a ghost or undead. After I post this, I'm going to start planning for leaving city life behind and moving, I need peace and I'm looking forward to getting it.

2024.05.31 19:40 Head_Valuable_6086 How did turkey and israel end up like this

This is going to be a long one. I will both talk about the anti semitism and turkophobia in the world, how it came into existence and then i will talk about how they made turks anti semites through lies and making them forget their past with the jews. So i was very very antisemitic when i was a child. Like i was no different than hitler. I believed every single stupid conspiracy theory i was told to and whats wierd is that every single person that told me them were very educated people who read lots of books. Then I grew up and asked "What if israel is right?" and then started doing my own research and everything changed.
So we first have to look at history to see where this all began. This all began in the roman empire. Europe hated both the turks and the jews in the world. They blamed everything on them. Turkophobia in europe started when huns started invading the roman empire. The word "Barbar" has its roots in here. Turks were the wild attackers to them. After this, in books, artpieces and everything, turks were shown as devils who are the divine punishment of the christians. Jews were blamed and dehumanized in the same way. Both jews and turks were being used as political tools throughout the history. There were lots of conspiracy theories and hatred formed in those times which still exist today. Most fo those antisemitic conspiracy theories you hear today can be found in literature and artpieces of the medieval christian europe, the roman empire until ww2. There are also a lot of examples of turks being blamed for being jews and jews for being turks. They tried to show the enemy the same to raise hatred. I will share examples of these at the bottom as sources, you can reaad them if you want. For this reason, jews were attacked, expelled, massacred and exposed to many different kinds of oppression. The reason they could not do this to the turks until ww1 was that turks had their own countries but jews didnt. Jews had to do whatever was expected from them or they were just executed.
This has formed a friendship between jews and turks in the history which is what the world is trying to make both jews and turks forget because now, jews are not weak and becoming enemies with them will really hurt europeans.
Now, we come to the first world war. Everything that happened between turks, jews and israel are very important because these are never mentioned. As I said it is very easy to make soemoen believe that jews or turks are bad. Just say something bad about them and even if it is slightly believable, people wont pursue the reality because they have been doing this for centuries. Hating turks and jews is just culture at this point. For example, the khazar theory saying ashkenazi jews are turkish is a continuation of this just like how melanchton said turks are red jews. If you read literary pieces of medieval europe and then look at today's conspiracy theories, you will see that there are a lot of similarities. They used to blame turks and jews for being eachother and they still do that. If they can make the world believe jews are turkish, it will become much easier to blame them and vice versa. People saying ataturk was jewish is another example of this. When you say something bad about ataturk, people will question it. But if you say then ataturk was jewish, people will be like "ah okay he was jewish so im not surprised that he was a bad person". They did this a million times and are still doing it.
So what happened in ww1? Only but only jews did not betray the empire and then turkey. Only jews. Did you know that moshe sharett was a gallipoli veteran? No, no one does because no one is going to talk about it. Did you know ben gurion tried to find soldiers for the ottoman empire? Again, no. It was the palestinians that betrayed the empire and fought against the turks killing thousands of them while jews fought on our side. Moshe sharett was also in this war btw. So why are jews hated so much despite being the only race in turkey that didnt harm turkey? Thats because of that antisemitism in the world. I would know because i was one of them. I was always told israel is the evil, israel supported pkk and asala, israel doesnt want us to develop so they repaired our war planes, israel wants to invade turkey because they want their promised lands, jews work with the masons and want to lower the world population, they control the world and banned silver from being used as medicine because they want to sell drugs and many many other shit Well I was a kid so I blame my parents for this.
So when theodor herzl met abdulhamid, people will say abdulhamid told him "you loser, we wont give you land and slapped him". In reality, he said "we cant give lands from jerusalem so if you want, we can sell lands from iraq instead". In the end, they couldnt make a deal but it wasnt like a fight going on in there. Furthermore, jews actually joined the movement of the young turks and contributed a lot. The purpose of young turks was to unite every nationality under the ottoman empire and throw abdulhamid down to build a more democratic regime and the only nationality that this movement was successful on were the turks and the jews. Most people will tell you that it was the jews that started the ww1 which also isnt true. They only bought lands from britain and paid their debts in return. They made the same offering to the empire but they refused. Then, after the war, during ww2, lots of jews migrated to turkey. Here is the letter of einstein to ataturk asking professors in europe to be taken into turkey. Here is a photo of those scientists and ataturk. These scientists contributed greatly to our universities and opened many faculties which still exist today. They built the foundation of the turkey we are living in right now. It was also a jew that built the grave of atatürk and refused payment for it saying that he owed to atatürk for saving him from nazis.
Then israel was built. Now i want to mention what turks think about israel and the reality. First I will talk about palestine. Palestine supported asala, an armenian terrorist organization which killed many turks and politicans. Trained their terrorist soldiers and provided them with intelligence and guns along with syria and lebanon. Syria sees hatay, a province in turkey's farthest south as its own territoryy and constantly makes claims about wanting to take it back. These same countries also supported pkk. PLO was the organizaiton that thought pkk militants, the guerilla fighting tactics and also provided them with guns and intelligence. Here is the video of palestinians burning a turkish, israeli and US flag after we arrested Öcalan witht he help of mossad, the leader of pkk in 1999. So both PLO, PKK, Hamas, ASALA and the syrian governments are our enemies. Also the leader of the team that was formed by turkey ot catch asala terrorist in euopre was a turkish jew called Hiram Abbas. Recently, Mahmud abbas declared his support for armenia agaisnt azerbaijan and china against uighur turks. Also syria, lebanon and palestine recognize the armenian genocide while israel doesnt. Also PLO attacked the neve shalom synagogue in turkey too.
Now, why do turkish people in majority still support palestine to the end? Because our government wants us to do so. As i said at the very beginning, its so easy to blame everything on jews and our government took advantage of that very well.
The actual sides in this war are very clear. Its russia, france, lebanon, armenia, syria, palestine, Iran regime vs turkey, israel, US, azerbaijan, iranian people, UK.
Maybe you didnt know but france supported all of the terrorist organizations including asala, pkk, and plo created in palestine, lebanon and syria by russia. Where do you guys think the communist star on the pkk flag came from?
Even today, why do you guys think israel gets so much support worldwide especially by germany. Because they want to blame you guys for genocide as well. Let me put it this way. For example, biden is always saying hamas is bad and we should support israel but he never explains why hamas is bad. What hamas wants is to exterminate every single jew and also other ethnicities and religions from the land of israel to build a sharia islamist country like taliban did. They dont even want a free palestine. So biden never talk about this but says hamas is bad and is a terrorist organization. This is actually a very good strategy because he makes himself look like he is supporting israel very well but at the same time he is digging israel's grave. So when people hear biden saying this, they will assume biden is lying and hamas is actually the good side being oppressed by israel. Most people wont do research. They will just see one or two videos on youtube or tiktok and believe them. Since most people think governments are always the liars, they will start looking for the truth. Biden very well knows that since israel is the stronger side, people wont belive that israel is also the good side very easily. Then they will learn about the history and think that israelis are the occupiers of palestine and invaders because of all the propaganda on the internet. Then they will believe what they found after what they heard from biden as the truth, they wont look any further. Most people, when they think they found the truth, they wont question it and look further into the question. Biden knows this very well and knew it from the beginning. In all of his speeches, he said hamas is a terrorist organization without giving any explanation why and since people have a tendency to believe terrorist organizations arent actually terrorists but shown like terrorists by their oppressors especially when they are the weaker side and also when the stronger side is jewish which is a race that is very easy to draw a bad image about. This will also convince people to not believe conspiracy theories about the jews since they already believe many conspiracies about the jews. So if an ordinary person like me figured this out, the president of the US must have figured it out from the beginning right?
They did this to turkey as well. First US supported turkey against pkk and asala since they were both communist organizations and also israel against plo and now, look at turkey's situation. Last week, japanese people protested against the pkk presence in their country, why didnt europeans do the same? Because they hate turks and jews. This has been like that in the history and is still like that today. Ask someone what antisemitic conspiracy theories they heard from antisemitic people, its very probable for you to find the exact same story in an old european literary piece.
After the war and after some time the war ends, all western countries will start blaming israel for a genocide just like they did agiant the turks. All those palestinians will start doing propaganda against israel. If you want to see your future, look at what armenians and kurds doing against turkey in europe and US. Thats the future of israel. This is why it hurts to see my government supporting terrorists against israel. I cannot believe my country can support terrorists after years of suffering under terrorism. Jews and turks should really start working together against this bs propaganda against us. Those who are protesting against turks in europe are the same people supporting pkk in other protests.
When they want to blame us, we become the white people as leftists say and when want to dehmanize us, we become the black people. Both turks and jews. Erdogan brainwashed our entire population against jews. When i asked my father why he dislikes israel, he told me israel is repairing our planes. So he saw even israel helping us as a bad thing. Its insane how people here forgot our history this fastly.
