Sorry about the clickbait, I actually played heavy bolter build only once and that was my first playthrough, so I didn't fully understand all of the synergy and can't fully compare.
However, I tried dual wield double pistols build (actually dual wield not needed) as pair holster makes Jae a beast (but late), so I decided to try Soldier-Arch Militant and the result is - you can do probably do solo unfair with extended stats - once this gets rolling. Which is pretty early (you need a couple of Arch Militant levels).
The mechanism is simple and built on one item - pair holster gives free pistol attack for every critical in burst. So you want to have have a pistol with nice RoF - you can get shuriken pistol in Act 2 when you first meet Marzipan (I did this before going to Kiava Gamma),. That's 7 burst, 8 with tactical backpack which you can get early on. With rapid fire it's 16 shots and if you can hit every one (which you can later), that's free 16 attacks, because Always Ready + Reckless Rush = 4 stacks of versatility + confident approach = every shot is a critical. Then you just want to change type of your attacks to build versatility for extra damage (and perhaps armor, but that's not necessary, cause you will win 99% of fights in T1). You don't even want the recoil gloves, stabiliser gloves for +25% extra critical damage are way to go - tempestus backpack is sufficient for removing recoil.
The dual weapon build is not that necessary, you can just switch your hands - Foe hammer is great for non burst fire, later Rebori-Pattern Foe hammer (Act 2 possible). Act 4 you take Daredevil pistol for extra RoF and damage, you can buy Bone-Shatterer. Also Anti vehicle revolver for extra strong opponents. This is when dual wield comes handy, as you want start with the Daredevil pistol for free attacks, go with the Bone-Shatterer for versatility and extra damage ability. And then switch to the Anti vehicle revolver - but that's really only for enemies with super high armor, for most of the fights you're good with the Daredevil.
You want to have Portative manipulator (also buying very early Act 2) for free reloads, which you'll need. Later when you get to 8 AP (it's worth to get +1 AP on Kiava Gamma with Dogmatic) you can swap Portative manipulator for Bead of might - extra 30% damage means you won't need to reload that often. You can get two reloads for free (fortress world origin, soldier ability) - you basically need only APs for: Rapid Fire, Revel in Slaughter (can use only one), Run and gun (for movement) - that leaves you with 5AP for reloads, which is fine.
You will need lot of movement for some fights because of the short range of your weapons. Since you use reckless rush at the beginning of fight you're stuck with run & gun and dash. Stimm is useful too.
You want a lot of agility for dodge and if you don't use Cassia (who makes every fight end before it even starts) also for initiative. You don't really care about armor - in case you get to T2 you'll have +a lot from versatility, And if you have bounty hunter Pasqal you can just get a lot of armor from Tactical knowledge - pick a lone enemy and give him lot of exploits in extra turns.
So how good is it? I am in Act4 - Unfair, wounds +100%, and only fight that has made it to T2 was Incogrous defiler because of his heal (I have destroyed only two plasma batteries).
Frozen world chaos marines - T1. Yremeryss fight - more like execution, the reinforcements didn't even come, Yrliet and Pascal had to take out those two Genestealers at the bottom, cause they were just too far (and Ulfar blocked Yremeryss so she wouldn't attack RT when she heals). Dragonus throne room fight vs xenos? T1. Only time my people get injured is when they stand to near to enemies and they get caught in burst fire. I don't even care anymore, Friendly kill Abelard in T1? Tough luck, still no problem.
This all without using Cassia, or any bring it down from Jae.

 | My mom recently got this washer for free. We pulled back the seal and it is RIDDLED with black and white mold. Is this safe in any way or should I replace asap? She is continuing to wash clothes in it because she says mold spores stain plastic, should I stop her? It doesn’t really look like it’s just stained, it very much feels and looks like fresh mold, the texture is very bumpy. It's been an interesting few weeks of MH3 spoilers! And OTJ has quickly had some $2 cards become $10 cards--there is so much value in OTJ it reminds me of a WOE 2.0. Freestrider Lookout and Hostile Investigator are only the two latest OTJ cards to be "discovered." Anyway, without further ado, here are some cards I've been buying over the last two months.
In just the last few days there have been some banger Eldrazi spells spoiled in MH3. Two of them in particular offer big rewards for casting 7+ cmc creature spells: Kozilek's Unsealing and Echoes of Eternity. But it's probably hard to cast more than one 7 cmc creature spell a turn, right? Nah, not if your big creature spells all have emerge. There is a whole cycle of 7+ cmc Eldrazi in Eldrich Moon that can easily be cast for 1 colored mana each, provided you sacrifice a 7 cmc creature when you cast them. With Kozliek's Unsealing in play, every big Eldrazi you cast for it's emerge cost is like an Ancestral Recall. And with an Echoes of Eternity in play you'll get a free copy of every Eldrazi you cast. Because of this synergy, I speculated on some foil Eldrazi with emerge--16 copies each.
Wretched Gryff @ $1, Abundant Maw @ $0.75, It of the Horrid Swarm @ $0.50, Mockery of Nature @ $0.50, Vexing Scuttler @ $0.75, Lashweed Lurker $0.50.
Additionally, I bought some foil copies of Elder Deep-Fiend @ $3 and Distended Mindbender @ $1. There was also already a buyout on Thought Monitor ($2) for the affinity version of this deck.
I've also been building a crimes-matter deck for Commander using the new Marchesa. An important card I've discovered for the deck is Thran Turbine, an uncommon with a single printing in Urza's Saga. Thran Turbine gives you two colorless mana during your upkeep, which is normally hard to spend because it can't be spent on spells. With Marchesa, however, this colorless mana can be used to pay for her ability when you commit crimes during your upkeep. I've discovered that one of the most difficult things about making Marchesa work is having enough mana available to pay for her ability, and Thran Turbine functions almost like a second Sol Ring in the deck. I bought 12 copies @ $2 each.
Stella Lee, Wild Card. 4x foil and 4x full-art @ $3 each. This card can be both a broken Commander or a strong card in the 99 of any spellslinger deck. It just does stupid stuff like draws your entire library with a Cerulean Wisps.
Return the Favor ($1.50 foils) x50. I might have went a little too deep on this spec, but I really love the versatility of the card. The downside is needing to hold open 3 or 4 mana to make this really work, but when it works out it's amazing.
Femeref Enchantress ($12) x6. A Reserved List card that can draw you heaps of cards when enchantments die. $12 is probably too cheap for this effect on a Reserved List card.
Patron Wizard - SL ($3 foils) x4. Some of these Secret Lair reprints are really cheap! Patron Wizard is a very powerful card in tribal wizards decks, with even some lockdown potential when combined with a card like Puresight Merrow. I would have expected these SL foils to be closer to $10 each, so for $12 I'm grabbing a playset!
Mirror of Life Trapping ($0.50 ext art foil) x16. This is a super cheap spec on the most premium version of a bulk rare. If Satoru becomes a popular Commander I think these could be worth a few bucks someday. Mirror can allow you to evoke creatures and then keep them around, scam-style. It also doubles up your creatures' ETB triggers and Satoru draws a card every time one of your creatures jumps out from behind the Mirror.
Primeval Spawn ($0.50 ext art) x16. Powerful creature that is almost impossible to cast or cheat into play. However it can get cheated into play with cards like Body Double or Volrath's Shapeshifter. Being 5-color, it's limited to only being in rainbow EDH decks so I don't expect Primeval Spawn to go to the moon or anything. But I think $0.50 is too cheap for a creature this powerful so I gave CK my $8.
Vine Dryad ($15 foil) x4. Hey, this is a 4-drop creature that can be cast for 0-mana! Probably good in some situations, right? This card reminds me a lot of the reasons I started buying Skyshroud Cutter foils: turn 1 Neoform into something like Elesh Norn or free-cast MH3's Flair of Cultivation.
Lashknife Barrier ($2 foil) x6. Love this old school foil! Cantrip and damage prevention effect with a single set-printing and foil

Additionally, I bought some foil copies of Elder Deep-Fiend @ $3 and Distended Mindbender @ $1. There was also already a buyout on Thought Monitor ($2) for the affinity version of this deck.
I've also been building a crimes-matter deck for Commander using the new Marchesa. An important card I've discovered for the deck is Thran Turbine, an uncommon with a single printing in Urza's Saga. Thran Turbine gives you two colorless mana during your upkeep, which is normally hard to spend because it can't be spent on spells. With Marchesa, however, this colorless mana can be used to pay for her ability when you commit crimes during your upkeep. I've discovered that one of the most difficult things about making Marchesa work is having enough mana available to pay for her ability, and Thran Turbine functions almost like a second Sol Ring in the deck. I bought 12 copies @ $2 each.
Stella Lee, Wild Card. 4x foil and 4x full-art @ $3 each. This card can be both a broken Commander or a strong card in the 99 of any spellslinger deck. It just does stupid stuff like draws your entire library with a Cerulean Wisps.
Return the Favor ($1.50 foils) x50. I might have went a little too deep on this spec, but I really love the versatility of the card. The downside is needing to hold open 3 or 4 mana to make this really work, but when it works out it's amazing.
Femeref Enchantress ($12) x6. A Reserved List card that can draw you heaps of cards when enchantments die. $12 is probably too cheap for this effect on a Reserved List card.
Patron Wizard - SL ($3 foils) x4. Some of these Secret Lair reprints are really cheap! Patron Wizard is a very powerful card in tribal wizards decks, with even some lockdown potential when combined with a card like Puresight Merrow. I would have expected these SL foils to be closer to $10 each, so for $12 I'm grabbing a playset!
Mirror of Life Trapping ($0.50 ext art foil) x16. This is a super cheap spec on the most premium version of a bulk rare. If Satoru becomes a popular Commander I think these could be worth a few bucks someday. Mirror can allow you to evoke creatures and then keep them around, scam-style. It also doubles up your creatures' ETB triggers and Satoru draws a card every time one of your creatures jumps out from behind the Mirror.
Primeval Spawn ($0.50 ext art) x16. Powerful creature that is almost impossible to cast or cheat into play. However it can get cheated into play with cards like Body Double or Volrath's Shapeshifter. Being 5-color, it's limited to only being in rainbow EDH decks so I don't expect Primeval Spawn to go to the moon or anything. But I think $0.50 is too cheap for a creature this powerful so I gave CK my $8.
Vine Dryad ($15 foil) x4. Hey, this is a 4-drop creature that can be cast for 0-mana! Probably good in some situations, right? This card reminds me a lot of the reasons I started buying Skyshroud Cutter foils: turn 1 Neoform into something like Elesh Norn or free-cast MH3's Flair of Cultivation.
Lashknife Barrier ($2 foil) x6. Love this old school foil! Cantrip and damage prevention effect with a single set-printing and foil.
Imagecrafter ($1.50 foil) x6. Also love this old foil. A 1-mana 1/1 that can change creature types (incidentally, a "crime") has gotta be good someday.

 | The ProblemMy Neptune 4, which has been in service about two months, is becoming very unreliable when printing larger objects (around 200mm in any axis). So I've been tinkering with bed leveling and even writing a macro to heat soak the bed to 80C for 10 minutes before calibrating and saving the calibration. I've also doubled the resolution of the calibration from 5 to 10 points on each axis to get a better look at the shape of the bed.The bed has developed what appears to be a wave shape based on the visualization in the Tuning panel of Fluidd. This is backed up by the physical results when printing as the areas that are lower on the visualization show lower adhesion, typically with the filament refusing to stick and being pulled off the bed only to start sticking again when the nozzle reaches the higher parts of the bed. This happens with both PLA and PETG, although I haven't had issues with TPU. I'm also printing the initial layer at 10mm/s. The Calibration Macro[gcode_macro PREHEAT_BED_WAIT_CALIBRATE] description: Preheats the bed, then waits, then calibrates gcode: M118 [PREHEAT_BED_WAIT_CALIBRATE] Pre-heating bed. G4 P600000; Wait 10 minutes, then calibrate M118 [PREHEAT_BED_WAIT_CALIBRATE] 10 Minutes Elapsed G29 M118 [PREHEAT_BED_WAIT_CALIBRATE] Calibration Completed M118 [PREHEAT_BED_WAIT_CALIBRATE] Saving Calibration and Restarting Klipper SAVE_CONFIG Analysis of 80C Bed Soak for 10 MinutesOne of the interesting things is that the bed shows a wave pattern in both the X and Y axis, with nine (9) really high spots and two vertical and two horizontal trenches, which really look like a tic-tac-to board was pressed into it. I have manually adjusted the screws multiple times (I use a new thermal receipt each time to set the height) with no real change in the calibration pattern. Also, if the screws are off the pattern normally shows a more uniform shape where either one side or one corner is significantly different, but no hint of a wave pattern like I am seeing now.What I suspect is happening is that the screws that hold the bed to the moving frame don't allow as much expansion as the bed heat soaks creating the trough lines. The parts of the bed that are not constrained by screws are thus expanding more as the bed soaks. I think another problem is that the corners are never reaching full temperature even when the bed is as heat-soaked as it will get. Heat soaking for 30 minutes showed exactly the same pattern as heat soaking for 10 minutes. I think this is contributing to another problem, which is large prints curling off the board, especially when printing PETG which requires a higher bed temp and thus means a greater variation in temperature the farther you are from the heater element (Ie. the corners). 80C 10 Minute Soak, 10 Points per axis Room Temperature CalibrationAs an experiment, I have modified the macro to remove the pre-heat to 80C and run the calibration after letting the bed sit at room temperature for 10 mins. This brings me to another issue, the temperature probes in the printer seem to be a tad inaccurate. The ambient temperature in my house is 65F, which is 18.3C. The probes in the printer are indicating 22.3C in the bed and 23.4C in the hot end. If either of those temperatures were accurate, I'd be heading to a cooler environment, as I begin sweating at 68F and at 72F I am liable to pass out due to health issues. But the real question is why is there a 1C difference when the head is parked on the bed?Also, at room temperature, the warping of the bed is actually more pronounced. 22C 10 Minute Soak, 10 Points per Axis This confirms that the bed is definitely warped, and the heat soak actually improves the flatness of the bed. I guess it's time to start a warranty claim. This is really unfortunate as I'm really wondering if these beds need to be replaced periodically. Also, would this problem be eliminated by using more screws to mount the bed to the moving frame? I was considering buying an Elegoo Neptune 4 Max as I need a bigger printer, but if the smaller bed warps like this, what's going to happen to one with four times the area to heat? |

 | So I'm printing teeth models on regular basis with exact same setup, nozzle material and enclosed MK4, and recently my prints instead of being buttery smooth started to look like this, there are regular, diagonal like overextrusion layers, sorta like fingerprint pattern. Very very strange! The barrowlands were a vast expanse, unforgiving and empty. Hills undulated and rolled, carved by the winds and time and the hands of the First Men. Dust that had once been kings’ bones sat in the thousands of slopes that defined the landscape, their blatant artificiality only occasionally marred by collapses and uncontrolled treelines.
It was in one of these barrows that the Locke party had taken shelter. The edges of a spring storm had reached them, darkening the sky before its time and blanketing the land with misty rain.
The barrow was unmarked to their eyes, any runes long since worn away by time. Even Valena did not know to whom the tomb had belonged, and to Harwin’s mind, that meant nobody knew. Now, night had fallen in truth, and a small cookfire crackled fitfully, smoke curling out of the doorframe to be lost in the mist. Their meal was strips of salted venison, the finest gift of the Manderlys’ court, and a small celebration that they had set out on their way.
They had spent two weeks in White Harbour, in the end, and the memory left him glad to be free. Bella Woolfield was a busy woman, distracted and superior in equal measures. Harwin had felt exposed, especially when their hosts toasted the memory of Lord Barthogan and Marlon Locke.
Sylas sat against the far side of the dark barrow, eyes straining at that book he had brought from Oldcastle. He’d so far evaded any questions about it, and the well-worn leather binding gave little clue. The space was crowded by the rest of their retinue, quiet men intent on their food, tired from a day’s travel and disheartened by the weather. Only Valena seemed energised, scanning the roof of the barrow, a sketchbook open on her knees, charcoal staining her fingers as she scraped it across the pages.
“What are you drawing?” Harwin asked, finding her easiest to engage with. The question drew several pairs of eyes. Only three of their number weren’t present. Frenken was out checking on the horses, Jorah had insisted on standing guard, and Benjicot had not yet returned.
“Ceiling,” Valena said, pointing. “See how the way the stones are stacked makes an alternating pattern? Sort of back and forth here by the entrance? Spiralling in the burial chamber?”
Harwin nodded, though in truth it took him a moment to parse what she meant.
“That allows them to stack into an arch without mortar. The weight of the soil on top keeps everything tight, and it’ll more or less stand forever.”
“Why not build castles like that?”
“Because–” Valena flicked the stick of charcoal in that way that meant she had caught herself before giving an inadequate answer. She took a moment.
“They did build fortifications. I guess you wouldn’t call them castles, and honestly this all depends on which maester you read. In any case, though, it doesn’t scale. You couldn’t build something the size of the Wolf’s Den or Oldcastle like this.”
Harwin nodded. There was a fragility in expansion, he knew. He had seen some small glimpse of it in the pulls on Bella Woolfield’s time. So many things that could go wrong. It didn’t discourage him as much as it probably should have.
“Who goes there?” came a voice. In the muffling of the wind and the barrow, it took a moment for Harwin to identify Jorah. The voice that answered was too far away for Harwin to make out the words, but he knew its sound. He was on his feet before he knew it, striding out of the ancient tomb.
“Benji!” he called, grinning unexpectedly. The soaked knight smiled in return. One hand held the reins of his horse, the other rose in greeting. Harwin ran in, clasping a hand to Ser Benjicot’s shoulder.
“My lord, it’s good to see you again,” Benji said.
“And you - I was worried you would pass us by, in truth.” Harwin took the reins from him, and Benjicot hesitated only slightly at the unexpected courtesy.
“I did,” he admitted. “I passed by here, oh, four hours ago, when the storm was worse. I figured I must’ve missed you and turned back.”
“Glad you did, ser.” Harwin brought the horse over to the others, and thanked Frenken when he took a blanket from one of the carriages, throwing it over Benji’s steed and tying it down.
“How was your visit to White Harbour?” Benjicot asked, wiping the rain from his brow uselessly.
“Uneventful, in truth. We didn’t mean to stay so long, but the Woolfield-Manderlys were having a feast to celebrate a nameday. Insisted we stay.”
“Sounds luxurious, my lord.”
Harwin shrugged. “If I ever eat another lamprey pie, it will be too soon.”
Benjicot chuckled, and then made a little oh noise at the back of his throat, and fumbled for the saddlebags of his horse. “That reminds me, my lord. I have something you may enjoy, hold one moment-” Whatever he sought had been packed low, but eventually Benjicot pulled out a small satchel, opening it to reveal what initially seemed like so many mottled bones.
“King crab legs. Salted, from Sweetsister. Care to try one?”
He handed the leg over, and Harwin followed his lead as he split the shell with a press of his thumbs, pulling the pale meat out from within with his teeth. The meat was softer than he expected, sweetness mixing with the salt of its preservation. He made a satisfied grunt as he swallowed.
“Gods, that is good. Sweetsister, you said?”
“Aye, my lord.”
“I must visit some day. Is everything there that delicious?”
Benji chuckled. “I couldn’t say, honestly.”
“And this,” Harwin gestured to the food as Benjicot stowed it again, “should I take it as an indication your visit also went well?”
“I believe so, my lord.” Benjicot pulled a different, familiar satchel from the saddlebag, and gestured ahead of them in a question, shall we step out of earshot for this part? Harwin nodded, and they began walking in a wide orbit around the barrow. Harwin blinked into the mist, trying to clear the rain from his lashes to no avail. Benjicot took a moment before he spoke again.
“I wasn’t perfectly successful, my lord. The captains I spoke to were – I think understandably – mistrustful of an unproven town like Shackleton. Not to say there was no interest, mind. There was one captain from Widow’s Watch who seemed to take pleasure in the idea of undermining the Manderlys.”
Harwin couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Well, it’s one way to make an ally.”
“Indeed, my lord. Once I realised I should emphasise that Shackleton is a lumber town, I got some more interest. The Sisters have a great demand for wood these days, as I understand, and Braavos’ Arsenal is always hungry. In all, I think I convinced seven captains to make some trade, with another four or so on the fence.”
He handed over the satchel, and Harwin opened it. He didn’t bother counting the coins within, merely shifting them from side to side to get an impression. A bit over half remained from the allowance that Harwin had given.
“Thank you,” Harwin said. “I hope you didn’t run into any trouble?”
“Thankfully not. I met a man I had known as a squire, but he did not think to suspect me of anything.”

“Oh, she spent much of the trip in the Wolf’s Den. I went with her a few times, stopped by the weirwood there. She took notes on the construction of the Den, I’m sure she’ll tell you everything you might want to know about Eyronic columns.”
“I have no doubt, my lord.”
Harwin stopped walking for a moment, looking out into the darkness of the barrowlands. The shadows were impenetrable, the rain oppressive. And yet he felt warmer than he had in weeks.
“I have missed you,” he said, turning to his knight. “More than I had expected to.”
Benjicot’s hair was windswept, auburn darkened to almost brown with the damp, and his beard was growing in stronger than he had let it before. It did not hide the smile that crept up his cheeks.
“And I you, my lord.”
“Thank you, again, for everything. We should probably go inside, get you warm.”
“I would appreciate that, my lord.”
They completed their lap of the barrow, returning to the small room with too many people, and the warmth of their greeting was greater than that of their fire. A plate of venison was pressed into Benjicot’s hands, and an energy filled the space anew as everyone asked after the knight’s health and of his news. Sylas retrieved wine from one of the carriages, and laughter rang through the tomb. The secrecy of Benjicot’s purpose in White Harbour was maintained, but gently mocked by all involved.
Harwin watched them all, trying not to focus too much on Benjicot. One would not think to look at the knight that he had risked his honour and freedom for Harwin. The merchants that he bribed would, Harwin hoped, prove profitable to Shackleton and Oldcastle for years to come. It was impossible to know just yet.
He was just glad to have Benjicot back amongst them. He had almost forgotten how close he had come to rely on the man in their weeks apart. Now, his household felt complete again. And it was his household, after all. The thought warmed him more than it once might have.
Sylas’ voice cut through the din of conversation. “Harwin, what’s our next stop?”
It took Harwin a moment to understand the context of the question, and so he barely avoided stammering when he answered, “Greywater Watch. Wanted to meet with the Reeds.”
Sylas nodded, curiosity satisfied, and returned to his conversation with Frenken. Their destination seemed to be helping him prove some point in a friendly argument. Benjicot was speaking with Jorah and his men, laughing over some dockside tale, pushing crab legs into the protesting guardsmen’s hands. Finally, Valena caught Harwin’s eye, smiling knowingly.
“Are we making friends all over the North?” she asked, half-mocking and half-sincere.
Harwin laughed, and didn’t answer.

It was in one of these barrows that the Locke party had taken shelter. The edges of a spring storm had reached them, darkening the sky before its time and blanketing the land with misty rain.
The barrow was unmarked to their eyes, any runes long since worn away by time. Even Valena did not know to whom the tomb had belonged, and to Harwin’s mind, that meant nobody knew. Now, night had fallen in truth, and a small cookfire crackled fitfully, smoke curling out of the doorframe to be lost in the mist. Their meal was strips of salted venison, the finest gift of the Manderlys’ court, and a small celebration that they had set out on their way.
They had spent two weeks in White Harbour, in the end, and the memory left him glad to be free. Bella Woolfield was a busy woman, distracted and superior in equal measures. Harwin had felt exposed, especially when their hosts toasted the memory of Lord Barthogan and Marlon Locke.
Sylas sat against the far side of the dark barrow, eyes straining at that book he had brought from Oldcastle. He’d so far evaded any questions about it, and the well-worn leather binding gave little clue. The space was crowded by the rest of their retinue, quiet men intent on their food, tired from a day’s travel and disheartened by the weather. Only Valena seemed energised, scanning the roof of the barrow, a sketchbook open on her knees, charcoal staining her fingers as she scraped it across the pages.
“What are you drawing?” Harwin asked, finding her easiest to engage with. The question drew several pairs of eyes. Only three of their number weren’t present. Frenken was out checking on the horses, Jorah had insisted on standing guard, and Benjicot had not yet returned.
“Ceiling,” Valena said, pointing. “See how the way the stones are stacked makes an alternating pattern? Sort of back and forth here by the entrance? Spiralling in the burial chamber?”
Harwin nodded, though in truth it took him a moment to parse what she meant.
“That allows them to stack into an arch without mortar. The weight of the soil on top keeps everything tight, and it’ll more or less stand forever.”
“Why not build castles like that?”
“Because–” Valena flicked the stick of charcoal in that way that meant she had caught herself before giving an inadequate answer. She took a moment.
“They did build fortifications. I guess you wouldn’t call them castles, and honestly this all depends on which maester you read. In any case, though, it doesn’t scale. You couldn’t build something the size of the Wolf’s Den or Oldcastle like this.”
Harwin nodded. There was a fragility in expansion, he knew. He had seen some small glimpse of it in the pulls on Bella Woolfield’s time. So many things that could go wrong. It didn’t discourage him as much as it probably should have.
“Who goes there?” came a voice. In the muffling of the wind and the barrow, it took a moment for Harwin to identify Jorah. The voice that answered was too far away for Harwin to make out the words, but he knew its sound. He was on his feet before he knew it, striding out of the ancient tomb.
“Benji!” he called, grinning unexpectedly. The soaked knight smiled in return. One hand held the reins of his horse, the other rose in greeting. Harwin ran in, clasping a hand to Ser Benjicot’s shoulder.
“My lord, it’s good to see you again,” Benji said.
“And you - I was worried you would pass us by, in truth.” Harwin took the reins from him, and Benjicot hesitated only slightly at the unexpected courtesy.
“I did,” he admitted. “I passed by here, oh, four hours ago, when the storm was worse. I figured I must’ve missed you and turned back.”
“Glad you did, ser.” Harwin brought the horse over to the others, and thanked Frenken when he took a blanket from one of the carriages, throwing it over Benji’s steed and tying it down.
“How was your visit to White Harbour?” Benjicot asked, wiping the rain from his brow uselessly.
“Uneventful, in truth. We didn’t mean to stay so long, but the Woolfield-Manderlys were having a feast to celebrate a nameday. Insisted we stay.”
“Sounds luxurious, my lord.”
Harwin shrugged. “If I ever eat another lamprey pie, it will be too soon.”
Benjicot chuckled, and then made a little oh noise at the back of his throat, and fumbled for the saddlebags of his horse. “That reminds me, my lord. I have something you may enjoy, hold one moment-” Whatever he sought had been packed low, but eventually Benjicot pulled out a small satchel, opening it to reveal what initially seemed like so many mottled bones.
“King crab legs. Salted, from Sweetsister. Care to try one?”
He handed the leg over, and Harwin followed his lead as he split the shell with a press of his thumbs, pulling the pale meat out from within with his teeth. The meat was softer than he expected, sweetness mixing with the salt of its preservation. He made a satisfied grunt as he swallowed.
“Gods, that is good. Sweetsister, you said?”
“Aye, my lord.”
“I must visit some day. Is everything there that delicious?”
Benji chuckled. “I couldn’t say, honestly.”
“And this,” Harwin gestured to the food as Benjicot stowed it again, “should I take it as an indication your visit also went well?”
“I believe so, my lord.” Benjicot pulled a different, familiar satchel from the saddlebag, and gestured ahead of them in a question, shall we step out of earshot for this part? Harwin nodded, and they began walking in a wide orbit around the barrow. Harwin blinked into the mist, trying to clear the rain from his lashes to no avail. Benjicot took a moment before he spoke again.
“I wasn’t perfectly successful, my lord. The captains I spoke to were – I think understandably – mistrustful of an unproven town like Shackleton. Not to say there was no interest, mind. There was one captain from Widow’s Watch who seemed to take pleasure in the idea of undermining the Manderlys.”
Harwin couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Well, it’s one way to make an ally.”
“Indeed, my lord. Once I realised I should emphasise that Shackleton is a lumber town, I got some more interest. The Sisters have a great demand for wood these days, as I understand, and Braavos’ Arsenal is always hungry. In all, I think I convinced seven captains to make some trade, with another four or so on the fence.”
He handed over the satchel, and Harwin opened it. He didn’t bother counting the coins within, merely shifting them from side to side to get an impression. A bit over half remained from the allowance that Harwin had given.
“Thank you,” Harwin said. “I hope you didn’t run into any trouble?”
“Thankfully not. I met a man I had known as a squire, but he did not think to suspect me of anything.”

Jump Notes
- I wake up in my room in the warehouse apartments, after shutting myself in without even checking the Benefactor's Lounge the night before
- I'm still lingering on the frustration of not cracking the riddle of Allabar, and not being able to solve the problem permanently
- But there's no going back, so I commit to facing forward for the rest of the week, and head to the Benefactor room
- Once again, there are four envelopes with me, and my big chart of jumps up on the wall, like something from a Kindergarten classroom
- As I affix a sticker saying "The Fountain (2006)" to the big chart, a small round outline appears next to it: "Biosphere Supplement available"
- On my way to call a team meeting, I catch a surprise outside the apartments
- Three of our bard graduates are slowly exploring the area
- At the team meeting, I announce my intention to go solo on the next jump
- The decision isn't popular, but most of them have waited while I've done gauntlets before, so it's not a big shock
- We set up the entertainment room to watch the movie, even though I don't expect that meta knowledge will be much help
- For the first time, we don't all fit in the Entertainment room
- By count, there are eleven of us (me and ten companions), the Halflings are now up to fifteen after two recent births, and we have nine new bards with us, so we set up a second showing in the evening
- Finally, before heading in to the jump, I make one last check of the Benefactor's office to see if there's more information on the biosphere supplement, but though my note has been removed, there is no response, and nothing on the tablet
- I awake from a deep sleep in a luxurious bed, it is early morning and the sun is still rising
- I can feel the absence of my abilities; I am reduced below even bodymod, to the level of a baseline middle-aged man in a world with primitive medicine
- Nevertheless, I can feel a gift reaching back in time to me - and as I accept it, I am calmed, no longer distressed by what I have lost
- In this time, I have duties, both in the mundane sense of the tasks those around me expect me to perform, as well as a greater sense in which I must try to make this world better

- Cyllene was said to have nursed and protected Hermes, as this vessel must nurture and protect us, the first observers, and hopefully, colonists,
- As my body and mind resume normal function over the course of 90 minutes, I get a slow trickle of updates on the status of the Cyllene and our mission
- The mission clock says it's 202 years since we left Earth, but thanks to time dilation, Earth has experienced 221
- Computer Block 5 (of 8) is currently undergoing automated reconstruction as the block with the highest error correction rate at the time the last automated reconstruction completed
- 1575 individuals are currently in cryosleep, and 25 (including me) are active, all sufficiently healthy
- I am still Dr. John Axstrom, revered teacher and groundbreaking computational pharmacologist, but my consciousness seems to have jumped forward a few hundred years, skipping past the development of miracle cures, life extension medications, and cryogenic preservation of humans
- As I realign with my memories and identity, I remember why I'm here
- If colonization proceeds, the coming generations are going to need exceptional teachers if they are to learn their place in the universe, and I'm one of the best there ever was
- Our mission is expected to take about 750 years from departure to arrival, and though the vast majority of that time is spent in cryosleep, we take shifts being "awake" to ensure systems are functioning and keep eachother mentally and physically healthy
- Since the monitoring systems will throw a fit if I straight up disappear from the vessel, I take a long ride out to the external "observation" check, out of the range of most of the sensor systems
- There's not really much to observe in deep space - it's like the night sky, as the ancients saw it with no light pollution, but from a different perspective
- Here I quickly form a stunt double duplicate, hand over my electronics, and duck into the warehouse
- The warehouse clock confirms my suspicions - I'm nearly seven years into the jump
- Since it looks like this isn't going to take nearly 1000 years, the team hasn't been going full-stasis mode
- The bards have been poring over J-Borg's personal library as well as the impressive collection of the warehouse media room
- But the reason I came is the Tablet of the Free - I'm stuck on a large but still confined deep-space vessel until my scheduled return to cryosleep - how is that supposed to entertain the boss?
- After confirming nothing interesting is in the warehouse, I head back to the observation deck, and stash the portable door I've been using back into hammer-space before re-merging with my stunt double, and taking the long trip back to the living area
- Our vessel, the Cyllene, is essentially a large asteroid with a hole carved in the middle, stuffed with propellent, equipment, supplies, expansive aquaponics facilities, and a relatively tiny living area
- I wake up to an unfamiliar synthetic beep - apparently the Cyllene's version of a doorbell
- When I open the door, one of my crewmates tells me that our directional antennas have picked up some unusual RF activity that seems to be coming from our destination system, and they want me (as the on-shift programmer) to help the astronomer, comms, and operations staff to help make sense of it, and ensure we're not about to get nuked by a magnetar or something
- Initial findings were sparse and inconclusive - just occasional pulses of a signal that must have been very strong and highly directional at the time of transmission, to reach us so far away
- But I had access to diagnostic tools that the astrophysicists and comms staff didn't, for all their training and equipment: a series of perks specifically for teasing out the needles of relevance from the haystack of noise
- And as I looked at what we were seeing, and what we weren't, the answer became clear: these radio bursts looked just like a primitive form of RADAR
- At first my colleagues on the Cyllene were skeptical, but the evidence kept mounting, with 4 additional series of "pings" being detected in the next six weeks
- With the spectre of extraterrestrial intelligence hanging over the Cyllene, our XO followed protocol, and ordered the full complement to be wakened from cryosleep to assist in the work to come
- Within six months, we had fabricated and installed a much larger purpose-built directional antenna array on the surface of our asteroid hull, and reports of different signals were coming in almost daily
- We needed all the extra hands, even our mining and terraforming experts were lending a hand with signal analysis and attempts to form patterns
- The whole crew felt the urgency and wondered at the situation - temporally, it would mean that their early experiments with RADAR and initial RF broadcasts would have happened at about the same time as humans did those things on earth, and if they developed at the same rate as us (a big if), they would likely be more advanced when we arrivedd than humans were when we left (and thus the technology of our vessel), and would almost certainly see us coming
- The coming months flew past, each bringing further confirmation of suspicious, but with it frustration, as we had been unable to extract a coherent signal - the broadcasts we could pick up didn't appear to be using either amplitude or frequency modulation
- More than once I brought signal samples to the warehouse team, but they were just as stumped as us
- Even more "esoteric" means didn't work - we tried every variation of "Tongues" and "Comprehend Language" spells on printed, audioized, and even engraved versions of the RF signals we caught, but they all failed and the representations seemed full of too many discontinuities
- I could feel my new Inventor's Vision working on the task of how to decode these signals, and about two years after the first pulse was detected, I had my breakthrough
- The signals didn't represent continuous audio (like human radio) or even piece-by-piece visuals (like rasterized video), but something of each, and a little weirder
- They were composed of many (from seven to three hundred, and not consistent at all) micro-audio clips
- It was like making an ultra-low bitrate recordding of the voice of every singer in a chorus individually, and transmitting fifty milliseconds of one, then fifty milliseconds of the next, and so one, in serial, and then starting back again with the first voice
- We couldn't figure out why they did this, but once I was able to identify the break points between each "voice", I could layer them on top of eachother to make a composite audio version
- And that composite audio could be played, and was a viable candidate for magic translation
- The entire vessel went wild when I demonstrated the isolation and recombination of the signals to produce audio
- The sound of the thing was somewhat like the sound of multiple birds, frogs, and crickets in a forest, in very brief clips
- Of course, I didn't reveal that I had access to magic translation - I figured the comms and signals staff (and the one cryptographer) should have to earn their pay
- The remaining year and a half was spent in intense research, for them, while I mostly slacked off and tried to make conversation with the people doing important work on this front, since my actual mission here was to "observe" as humans of this universe underwent a sort of assymmetrical first contact
- I awaken in my weird little pod bed in my weird little capsule room for the last time, perfectly aware of the remaining hours in this jump
- After the initial excitement died down, the majority of the colonists were put back into cryosleep, with only the decoding specialists and those "on shift" like me staying active
- There has been a lot of anxiety around the Cyllene for the last few months - we are clearly a colony ship and the intelligent inhabitants of that system probably do not want to be colonized, and may well be easily capable of destroying us
- There were discussions about trying to reverse course and head back to Earth, but we could do that any time, and the closer we get, the more information we can gather about the system and its inhabitants
- It would be cruel to try to skim supplies from this vessel even if there were something I wanted aboard, so I just wait my time out, helping where I can and secretly translating any communications we receive when time permits

- The team did end up spending most of the time in stasis, and the formerly-newborn halflings are a little over a year now biologically, learning to speak and walk
- When I mention the Biosphere supplement and how I wasn't allowed to consult them, they naturally asked when it would apply, but it hadn't even occurred to me that there were now definitely too many of us to wait out warehouse changes in the entrance hall, so I checked with the central control
- Afterward, no one was complaining when the doors finally unlocked and we were able to leave the commons hall, only to find that the door led to an outdoor path with a natural-looking sunset on the horizon
- I didn't want to spoil the whole setup yet, so I said we could tour in the morning, and turned off a number of the facilities and systems for the night, to give me some time to understand what options were available before letting my companions go wild with them
- Fortunately, the obvious items like the tree of life and factory complex were on other islands, that would be difficult to reach without the transport disks running
- And then I went to sleep again, wondering what the next awakening had in store for me
- After the initial excitement died down, the majority of the colonists were put back into cryosleep, with only the decoding specialists and those "on shift" like me staying active
Notes on the Fountain Jump Doc
- Honestly this doc has been on my to-try list since I saw it - I really enjoyed the movie and gladly rewatched it again when it came up in my random draw.
- The author took some liberties with the source material, which makes sense because of how focused on Thomas the story is, and the extensions largely make sense
- There were a few confusing things in the jump, such as how you get essences and what powers you bring with you into each phase of the jump, but a close reading makes them clear enough
- The jump has a few really standout purchase
- the inventor's intention is the answer to a lot of concers that "do-gooder" jumpers are likely to have in their careers
- the full tree of life is an amazing item - the ability to grant perfect health and immunity to aging within a regrowing item solves a lot of problems
- 500 years of practice is amazing if you have a particular skill or art in mind - literally centuries better than the "10 years of practice" equivalents that you find din many other jumps, and has a lot of potential to synergize with other perks that scale off your skill in a particular area
- Biosphere is super cool if you want your fiat-backed warehouse to grow into something more
- The Dagger of the Path is a great example of a conceptual weapon, and something I probably would have picked up if I had a bunch more points
- How you're supposed to interleave the three eras is a little unclear, and maybe I'm not a creative enough author to pull it off. I don't believe SJ Chan ever got around to writing a fictionalized account of jumping to it, unfortunately
- If anyone else has done a good jump fiction of this jump, please let me know
- Overall absolutely a fantastic jump. Obviously a great option for anyone who likes the movie or wants to solve one of the specific problems available
- I'd especially recommend it for an early-chain jumper because of the generally low danger level and great variety of rewards
Notes on the Biosphere Supplement Doc
- I knew this was something I wanted to pick up when I first read the fountain jumpdoc several months ago
- I use the "Personal Reality" warehouse which was co-authored by SJ Chan, and this supplement feels perfectly tailored to supplement that
- There are lots of good pickups for people with various interests, or those who just want to keep their options open
- Observation Deck seems like the real must-have since a lot of the other buys are controllable through it
- The structure of the biosphere was a little confusing at first - I thought that there was an island, a void around the island, and a hard shell, and wasn't sure why you'd want to increase the shell thickness, but further reading cleared that up
- On the whole, a good pick up, especially considering it only cost 400 CP in the jump, and normally buying warehouse upgrades with CP has a very unfavorable conversion, but in this case, the biosphere purchases all seemed cheaper than they ought to be.

I was talking to a friend who's reading The Wheel of Time for the first time and is currently in TDR. He mentioned his frustration with the Emond's Fielders for not trusting Moiraine, despite everything she's done for them. I know this is a common reaction among new readers. Interestingly, during my first read, I felt the opposite, especially regarding Rand, and this feeling only intensified in subsequent readings. This led me to make this post.
In my opinion, the distrust towards Moiraine, particularly from Rand, is entirely her own fault. A similar pattern can be seen in Rand's relationships with other characters like the Aes Sedai, Wise Ones, and nobles.
Yes, Rand and the Emond's Fielders had preconceived notions about Aes Sedai being mysterious and self-serving, and Moiraine did everything in her power to legitimate their distrust. From the start, she treated Rand not as a human but as a tool to be used. Moiraine's "guidance" was more about controlling Rand's life. The first thing she did was give Rand a coin under false pretenses, which influenced his free will and tracked his location—essentially a non-consensual bond. This manipulation justified Rand's distrust.
Things worsened with Moiraine’s manipulation, half-truths, invasion of privacy, theats, and distancing Rand from friends, like Thom. She admitted she didn't use harsher methods only because they would have been catastrophic. How could anyone trust her?
However, as Rand matured, Moiraine did the unimaginable—she swallowed her pride, apologized, and treated Rand as a human. And guess what? IT WORKED. Rand listened and valued her advice. In her letter, she admitted it was hard not to control Rand. Imagine how different things could have been if she had acted this way from the beginning.
This pattern repeats with the Wise Ones, dor instance. Rand approached them in good faith, showing respect and trying his best to adapting to their culture. Yet, before even considering talking to him as an equal, they spied on him, invaded his dreams his privacy, and tried to manipulate him through Egwene, who as supposed to be his friend, but did helped them and Moraine to manipulate him. Trust cannot be built this way, and it's not Rand's fault.
Moiraine and the Wise Ones were arguably the least harmful. Alanna bonded Rand without consent, which was appalling. Nobles rebelled despite Rand saving their nations. Other Aes Sedai boxed and tortured him. Cadsuane boasted about gentling men and making them cry. All of that without even talking to him first.
The people who were supposed to be his allies hurt him more than the Darkfriends themselves. In fact, many Darkfriends are more transparent, respectful, and truthful with Rand than the Aes Sedai. Considering all this, it’s obvious that Rand would develop trust issues, and I think it’s unfair to blame him or his madness for that. There were few allies, like Min, who truly earned and deserved his trust.
A common critique is that WoT characters have poor communication, leading to avoidable problems. But beyond that, those in power (Aes Sedai, Wise Ones, royals, nobles) often refuse to see others, especially Rand, as intelligent and capable individuals. At 19F in the middle of active alcoholism 3 years after my mom went to jail for murder for hire, I was a SW (looking?) for a SD? - while out at a bar I got approached by a 43M that I found attractive and very charismatic. Thinking we’d end up having “fun”, I returned the honest sentiment of attraction. We stayed together 2.5 years after that. He was a Chemist who laughed and made light of everything, his alcoholism and drug addiction became apparent from the beginning, but not to the extent that it got to/really was.
Like all relationships, things started out fun, a very Glee movie summer-like love, very free-ing. He was a Doctor of chemistry and worked in the oil field prior to my meeting him, because of his living situation and luxury cars he seemed like he was doing well. He never was any type of SD. The night I met him, we made eye contact and never looked away. Our chemistry, pun intended- was like nothing I’ve ever experienced.
I’m the youngest, not the smartest nor prettiest. I quit my jobs because I simply didn’t want to work sometimes, I made a lot of mistakes and I’ve been in the receiving end of family based bullying and school bullying, SA, R@p€, abandonment and trust issues, I’m bipolar, I practice/d SH, depression, GAD… things of the human condition that make it feel like I’m faulty.
This man was the first person that ever sat with me and listened to me vent to the extent that I did the first tight we spent together. We rarely had sex, but we shared breaths as we slept, (he inhales my breath as I exhale his breath, vise-versa and so on and so forth) to keep it brief and give example. He’s the most intimate partner I’ve ever experienced.
I notice others micro expressions and cater to their benefit if it seems they are troubled or asking for help.
I’m having so much trouble these days accepting the fact that I’m never going to meet him again. Specifically because he was so attentive and catering to my needs. He knew immediately when I was masking. I’m so confused and perplexed about the feeling of not having anyone in my life that has that interest in me. I felt so understood. That’s been my first and last experience with feeling understood like that.
He drank from morning to night nonstop. Together we became aware of what alcoholism was. Brown urine, blood, pain… regret that then led to arguments, accidents, threats, drugs, danger, fear turned to bonding, helping each other, trying to get better, failing. Trying again. Do it all over again. Fail. Again and again.
We managed to get sober a few days. His parents loved me. I understood and loved him. He hadn’t been sober for that long and trying for a long time. He was doing better, that’s what his mom would say.
Every relapse got harder, more dangerous medically and physically as well as economically.
Sleep deprivation was torture I hadn’t experienced before. I would be awoken with yelling because of delirium, anger and he would degrade me so badly. Use that bond we had against me, my own experiences turned against me he’d repeat the insults I shared with him to me. Yell those at me. Then love bomb. Then threaten me and my family with guns. I lived in fear when he blacked out. Felt lonely because with all of the yelling, smashing things around, being stared at by neighbors crying, being called an idiot dumbass in front of people and them witnessing me at a low point and then, agreeing with him? No neighbor knocked after crying and yelling to see if anyone was ok or dying. Public shame feels so. Fucking. Lonely. Isolation doesn’t help.
He stopped functioning. His body started giving out. I loved him. Took care of him cleaned his wounds after falls, his body after incontinence. He literally shed blood, shit and tears, regret and asked for forgiveness when I cared for him in his sober state.
In return, I’d receive non stop verbal abuse if I didn’t stop and do what he wanted me to at the time he wanted me to and how he wanted me to. If I didn’t give him my attention he’d end up getting it by threatening my family. And he would! Fight my brother and go after him with loaded guns. So there I would go do what he said. Forced to ride in a vehicle, with him locking the doors, blasting Phil Collins yelling at me. Driving erratically, dangerously. And I’d be so fucking scared of crashing. Just imagining the police report, “f19 dead alongside 43m after drunk reckless driving”. He’d speed in traffic so I couldn’t really jump out the car. I’d end up just drinking to numb the fear.
I had enough and attempted to sleepies forever by taking a sweet deadly cocktail of whatever handful of pills I could get my hands on. We had plastic gallon moving boxes filled with narcotics- he was a pharmacist too. I told him I was going to KMS he said go ahead, so I attempted and I filmed it.
From the setting up the phone in that closet, the one I color coordinated for him, his button-ups and suits in those dry-cleaning bags that hadn’t been opened since leaving the laundry shop… I watched my su!c!d€ afterwards. Out of morbid curiosity. “What a dumbass!” was what he said when he found me. I won’t go into detail of the full video but chest compressions hurt a lot, 10/10 would not recommend. And EMS left the AED stickers on my chest 🤷🏽♀️
After that 24hr watch, an awkward taxi drive to a crisis clinic that was understaffed and left me in a room by myself for two hours and walking in public with those see-through paper hospital clothes. Embarrassment is a light expression. When I was taken home, I didn’t have keys, or phone, or anything. Just my discharge papers and my cut vomit stained pajamas in a biohazard bag. - I lived in a gated neighborhood with key-fob-entry-only. I was fucked and waited what seemed like 4 hours for anyone to help me but no one showed up until HE did WITH MY BROTHER. The one who was threatened with a gun, that brother.
JFC the amount of insults, “what a fucking dumbass, what were you thinking? You’re a fucking idiot!” To summarize in the friendliest way. I was dressed in a see through hospital gown, I went straight to the shower, didn’t have the energy to get dressed when they kept just YELLING at me. INSULTING me- I had enough and wanted to defend myself. That’s when my brother pulled out his phone and started filming me pleading with them to let me sleep, calling me crazy, threatening to “show the family how fucking crazy you are!” - I threw my phone. Broke the microwave door. More insults, while still filming me, I was ordered to, “clean it up” - and at that moment. Completely detached, I did.
I put my brother on the soon-est bus to Mexico and sent him to rehab after 2 hell filled weeks of him living with us because he was so fucked in alcoholism he was homeless. To this day I don’t know how I did that.
I managed to leave my ex. 2 weeks later I receive calls from worried friends. Ryan was missing.
After investigating, (calls to police,hospitals, checking out the “usual” spots) - turns out he went to a Circle K looking for Peroni after the liquor store wouldn’t sell to him, tripped on the steps, hit his head on the pavement, STILL MANAGED TO PURCHASE ALCOHOL, left, got into a fight, and somehow miraculously ended up in his apartment where he tried to shower, fell face forward towards the water tap, (which left a softball sized bruise on his right eye and fractured his nose) he then tried to walk towards the kitchen? Passed out in the living room leaving blood all over the walls, puddles on the ground and the biggest blood clot stain on the floor ( we had to get crime scene cleaners). He apparently had a fit where he trashed the apartment by throwing my things, my plants, bottles of crown… anything. Everything was trashed when I found him in the apartment. I counted at LEAST 20 bottles of crown. He was so fucked up we thought he had been assaulted.
COVID hit and hospitals were in full lockdown. As an “essential worker” I could travel to the hospital to see him, and because someone somewhere said I was his wife/fiancée I was the ONLY one allowed to see him.
I snuck behind friends and family’s backs checking in on him at the hospital. Singing The Carpenters songs, wearing his favorite perfumes, reading Bill’s Story (IYKYK), playing Phil Collins. The whole 9 yards.
The last time I saw him, he was in Physical therapy/Rehab. He ended up moving back to his parents in California. Then February the next year, on Valentine’s Day - his mom let me know he passed.
She grieved very much attached to me. It was one of the saddest things I ever had to help someone through - alongside helping her son go through alcoholism.
I became a CNA as a tribute to helping him during those hard sober times where his body gave out. Helping others like that, bathing them, diaper changing, g-tube cleaning, hygiene essentials…
The classic grief started with what-if’s. Etc. it’s been hard lately because all my family is against him and his family resents me for being the only one with access to his medical records during COVID. I’m in a relationship now and our therapist told me to “put a break on it”. Recently. My mental illnesses keep getting worse and I feel like no other has taken such interest in me as much as Ryan did. He was so observant. So in-sync with me. And he was so shitty to me. He’s like the sweetest tasting radioactive flower that once was and will never be. And I’m grieving. And it’s so lonely out here.
I don’t know. I’m not suicid@l, I’m medicated and 4 years sober. It’s been hard and it’s getting harder to understand. I feel neglected and lonely. Anything helps please.

Out of morbid curiosity. “What a dumbass!” was what he said when he found me. I won’t go into detail of the full video but chest compressions hurt a lot, 10/10 would not recommend. And EMS left the AED stickers on my chest 🤷🏽♀️
After that 24hr watch, an awkward taxi drive to a crisis clinic that was understaffed and left me in a room by myself for two hours and walking in public with those see-through paper hospital clothes. Embarrassment is a light expression. When I was taken home, I didn’t have keys, or phone, or anything. Just my discharge papers and my cut vomit stained pajamas in a biohazard bag. - I lived in a gated neighborhood with key-fob-entry-only. I was fucked and waited what seemed like 4 hours for anyone to help me but no one showed up until HE did WITH MY BROTHER. The one who was threatened with a gun, that brother.
JFC the amount of insults, “what a fucking dumbass, what were you thinking? You’re a fucking idiot!” To summarize in the friendliest way. I was dressed in a see through hospital gown, I went straight to the shower, didn’t have the energy to get dressed when they kept just YELLING at me. INSULTING me- I had enough and wanted to defend myself. That’s when my brother pulled out his phone and started filming me pleading with them to let me sleep, calling me crazy, threatening to “show the family how fucking crazy you are!” - I threw my phone. Broke the microwave door. More insults, while still filming me, I was ordered to, “clean it up” - and at that moment. Completely detached, I did.
I put my brother on the soon-est bus to Mexico and sent him to rehab after 2 hell filled weeks of him living with us because he was so fucked in alcoholism he was homeless. To this day I don’t know how I did that.
I managed to leave my ex. 2 weeks later I receive calls from worried friends. Ryan was missing.
After investigating, (calls to police,hospitals, checking out the “usual” spots) - turns out he went to a Circle K looking for Peroni after the liquor store wouldn’t sell to him, tripped on the steps, hit his head on the pavement, STILL MANAGED TO PURCHASE ALCOHOL, left, got into a fight, and somehow miraculously ended up in his apartment where he tried to shower, fell face forward towards the water tap, (which left a softball sized bruise on his right eye and fractured his nose) he then tried to walk towards the kitchen? Passed out in the living room leaving blood all over the walls, puddles on the ground and the biggest blood clot stain on the floor ( we had to get crime scene cleaners). He apparently had a fit where he trashed the apartment by throwing my things, my plants, bottles of crown… anything. Everything was trashed when I found him in the apartment. I counted at LEAST 20 bottles of crown. He was so fucked up we thought he had been assaulted.
COVID hit and hospitals were in full lockdown. As an “essential worker” I could travel to the hospital to see him, and because someone somewhere said I was his wife/fiancée I was the ONLY one allowed to see him.
I snuck behind friends and family’s backs checking in on him at the hospital. Singing The Carpenters songs, wearing his favorite perfumes, reading Bill’s Story (IYKYK), playing Phil Collins. The whole 9 yards.
The last time I saw him, he was in Physical therapy/Rehab. He ended up moving back to his parents in California. Then February the next year, on Valentine’s Day - his mom let me know he passed.
She grieved very much attached to me. It was one of the saddest things I ever had to help someone through - alongside helping her son go through alcoholism.
I became a CNA as a tribute to helping him during those hard sober times where his body gave out. Helping others like that, bathing them, diaper changing, g-tube cleaning, hygiene essentials…
The classic grief started with what-if’s. Etc. it’s been hard lately because all my family is against him and his family resents me for being the only one with access to his medical records during COVID. I’m in a relationship now and our therapist told me to “put a break on it”. Recently. My mental illnesses keep getting worse and I feel like no other has taken such interest in me as much as Ryan did. He was so observant. So in-sync with me. And he was so shitty to me. He’s like the sweetest tasting radioactive flower that once was and will never be. And I’m grieving. And it’s so lonely out here.
I don’t know. I’m not suicid@l, I’m medicated and 4 years sober. It’s been hard and it’s getting harder to understand. I feel neglected and lonely. Anything helps please.

 | Formd T1 2.1 - custom glass panel submitted by Brot-MS to sffpc [link] [comments] I'm not sure if this qualifies as a detailed log or a custom mod, so I apologize if I use the incorrect flair. The original plan was a simple T1 build: nothing extraordinary, just a 4080 Super Founders Edition, an AMD 7800x3D, two 2TB NVMe, and a 240mm Watercool AIO. I was still waiting for some custom cables, which made it a little cramped, but everything fit on the first try. The first problem was that the riser cable covered the WD SN850X NVMe in the back, causing it to hit 70-80°C. I needed the extra storage, so I temporarily used the NVMe in an external USB 3.2 case. But after Joel ( u/Jwithcables ) and his team sent me the beautifully handcrafted custom cables, I couldn’t bring myself to hide them. So, the final decision was made. I took inspiration from EIGA's GPU bracket and restructured the T1 with some custom parts. The requirements were as follows, prioritized in this order:
Blender, NVMe bracket The best way to show off the cables was to leave the side open, but tempered glass was much more beautiful. However, it would obstruct the airflow to the PSU and the two NVMe drives again. Therefore, I added 0.88 liters to the case by offsetting the glass panel by 12 mm. The case had wonderful grooves and slots for screws around the frame, which I utilized for my four glass panel brackets to attach them firmly without wobbling. Blender, glass bracket The Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 Atmos has a nice feature where you can remove the plastic cover on the water block and 3D print your own design. With the added space, I recognized that there was plenty of room for a Noctua NF-A9x14, so I designed a socket for it, influenced by this. With the socket, and the spacers the fan still has 7mm of space to the glass, enough to quietly suck air into the case. Blender, all parts But now the PSU was still sunken inward, and the case looked kind of unclean. I couldn’t use the alternative PSU bracket from the T1 to bring the PSU flush to the case because my glass bracket would interfere with the PSU bracket. So, you know the story: I designed a PSU case around my glass bracket and made them separate parts in case I need to switch the PSU. Printed PSU bracket I first printed every part with an FDM 3D printer, the Prusa MK3S, in PLA. After a try-fit and testing, I printed them again with Nylon PA 11 (PA859), which is high heat-resistant and strong, using a Multi-Jet Fusion printer. The print quality was absolutely high-grade. After three months of use, the mainboard decided to show me the CPU error warning just because I plugged an 5V LED strip into the mainboard. In short, I couldn’t find any solutions online, but the fix was to boot without the main drive, then put it back in after a restart. I still don’t know why. LED behind the PSU, PSU and glass bracket glass on O-rings on glass bracket \"backside\" NVMe And before you ask, the extra fan doesn’t do much for general cooling of the CPU or GPU. But both of my NVMe drives are now running between 30 and 45°C and I guess the mainboard components and the memory are also cooled. My case is idling around 43°C, while I prioritize sound over temperature. No undervolting, no special settings, just XMP is on. The printed Atmos socket/cover has only 3 arms because it interferes with both coolant tube, routed to the top.
