2024.05.23 08:58 TyThe1Guy Burnt Barry

Hello, I am a student of medicine at University of Utah (This info will become relevant later), and I had an experience with something I cannot not explain. For spring break, me and a couple buddies from class pooled some money together to rent a houseboat. The first few days were fun, and we had no problems until the third day of our trip. It was around 1 am and I was the only one up. I was reading when I realized how much of a mess we made. It stank, three days of guys not showering and throwing back multiple packs of beers will definitely do that. But there was a scent I could pick out of the body odor. A smell reminiscent of when you leave popcorn in the microwave for a couple seconds too long and their cores are all burnt black. This smell started to nag at me while it got stronger by the second. I started investigating the source of the scent when I heard noises, it could have just been my ears overly adjusted to the silence, but I swear I heard a sound. It had a squishiness to it that could only be described as walking in tennis shoes that have been completely soaked. I swear I was going insane or just having a surprise after midnight hangover, but then I saw undeniable real, Physical proof that I wasn’t going mad. Small puddles of water leading down a narrow hallway. One of the guys must have been making their way to the bathroom, but that wouldn’t explain the puddles. Maybe they spilled a drink on themselves or perhaps being blackout drunk, pissed themselves on the way to the bathroom. I made my way to the bathroom, knocking on the door ask if they are well and perhaps offer help. The unlatched door swung open with the force of my knocks. A shadow figure stared at the mirror with such intensity that I felt as if I was interrupting some grand ceremony. I studied its silhouette to try to discern which bunkmate it could be. However, the shape was wrong, it didn’t match one of my friends or a human for that matter. Its upper body was deathly skinny with a jagged and not symmetrical frame. When I looked down, I saw plump round legs that could only belong to someone weighing over 400 pounds. I thought I had to know, I was wrong, I did not have to know. I could have said, sorry, close the door and head to bed. Relaying that ignorance is bliss as I fell asleep. But no, I HAD to know. I flipped on the light and my vision exploded with color. It was horrible, the creature was mostly a drenched skeleton bonded together with stringy red meat. Its face only bore only its right eye and a small stretch of skin that covered the right side of its face, like a flesh version of mask the phantom wears on Broadway. A glance down revealed a blue set of wet obese legs with skin slowly peeling away like a large blue sunburn. A pair of athletic shorts was the only thing that could prove this “thing” was once human. Its eye widens, as it finally caught a look of itself. It opens its mouth and dark thick liquid sputtered out onto the mirror and sink. The chunks of which slowly rolled down the glass surface. Then for about 10 seconds its jaw lowered and raised slightly as if it was trying to find its voice. And it did, a scream escaped with guttural lows and high pitches combined in a sound that wasn’t meant for this earth. The thing’s head jolted up as if something had touched it, and it certainly wasn’t me. Its exposed ribs tore into my shoulder as it threw itself out into the hallway. Or maybe it didn’t, because for next several seconds, I would view this once human thing try and grasp onto anything as an invisible rope would tug on its midsection. It bounced up and down the hall and out onto the deck until it caught the fence. The last separation between boat and water. I gazed upon it for the last time. In its eye, I could only see a look of seemingly shared terror. But there was a hint of sad desperation. A blend of flesh and bones reached out to me, its extended fingers quickly collapsed as it seemed to realize that I wasn’t going to help it. The siren coming from the hole in its face crackled then lowered to a hum. It seemed to give up, releasing any grip that was keeping it from the depths. Its body disappeared under water.
I am writing this around 3 am as I have been having trouble sleeping since then. I can still remember its body. As a student of medicine, I feel more sick as I might know how it died. Its boney red upper body must have been the result of multiple 3rd degree burns. No skin remains above the waist other than the patch around the right eye. Its enormous dark blue legs were a victim of bloating after staying underwater for months on end. The puffy limbs absorbed so much water, flakes of skin were shown to be ripping off. This body would have to die in a specific fashion to have the top half be burnt and stay dry while the bottom half decayed under water. That roar has left my ears ringing, that hoarse sound could only come from half cooked vocal cords. However, the worst part was not the gore, but the look it gave me. I feel like I should have tried something, but deep down, I was never going to. I was frozen in my own fear. Restless, I would search for anything that would give me closure. And there in an article I found it. “20-year-old, USU student, Barry Miller assumed dead, trapped in sunken houseboat that caught fire.” I was shocked to find this only happened a few months ago. The half burnt, half bloated body had a name. Barry. Burnt Barry.

🔗Leupold Gold Ring 12-40x60mm HD Folded Light Path Spotting Scope

https://preview.redd.it/ysp24r3z142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f368e884ed35f771ec657d0f4f11bba7604b2d72
I recently got my hands on the Leupold Gold Ring 12-40x60mm HD Spotting Scope, and I must say it's a game-changer! This little powerhouse boasts an Extra Low Dispersion Optical System, which maximizes color fidelity and contrast. It provides an incredible image across a wide field of view, all with best-in-class eye relief for easy viewing with or without eyeglasses.
One feature that really stood out for me was the Folded Light Path (FLP) system. Instead of using prisms, this system employs mirrors to compress a long optical path into half its length, making the scope incredibly compact and portable.
Another highlight is its magnesium housing. This lightweight material packs a serious punch when it comes to durability, making it ideal for rough outdoor conditions. And don't even get me started on the 100% waterproof and fog proof capabilities - this thing can brave any weather!
However, one issue I encountered was with the focus knob. It's extremely stiff and doesn't change smoothly as you adjust the magnification. It took me quite a few tries to get used to it. Additionally, there's no diopter adjustment, but the good eye relief somewhat compensates for that.
Despite these minor drawbacks, I've been thoroughly impressed by the Leupold Gold Ring HD Spotting Scope. Its top-notch optical performance combined with its rugged construction makes it a strong contender in the realm of spotting scopes. If you're in the market for one, this could be an excellent investment.

🔗Killer Instinct Lumix Speedring Crossbow Scope: Improved Targeting for Hunting

https://preview.redd.it/h532lzmz142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4c0f750e48434075526f607d337f22bd072e659
Using the Killer Instinct MSCKI-1020 Lumix Speedring 1.5 to 5 x 32 IR-E Crossbow Scope has been quite an experience. The scope has made hunting much more enjoyable for me, thanks to its amazing abilities to lock onto and track moving targets from vast distances.
One of the features that really stood out is the durability of the metal case. This thing has a real tank-like feel to it, resisting impacts and harsh weather as if it was made for it. The spring-loaded covers on the lenses also proved to be quite reliable, keeping the lenses safe and scratchless until I was ready to hunt.
The built-in Speed Ring is another aspect of the scope that has impressed me. Making adjustments for my crossbow's speed has been a breeze, and the illuminated reticle is a big help when it comes to sighting in low-light conditions. I particularly appreciate the contrast the red/blue illumination provides.
However, there was one downside that I found a little disturbing. The scope came in a condition that made it apparent that someone had used it before. I was not happy with this fact, especially considering I had paid for a brand new product.
Overall, the MSCKI-1020 Lumix Speedring 1.5 to 5 x 32 IR-E Crossbow Scope is a product that I would recommend, even with its minor fault. It certainly helped me become a better hunter, and it would do the same for anyone looking to enhance their hunting experience.

🔗Powerful Dual-Speed Digiscoping Scope with Extra Low Dispersion Lens

https://preview.redd.it/satab4zz142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a937a32d51dc1df999c795a8a3f66ea9be4d64c6
Recently, I had the chance to get my hands on the Knight PT 72mm f/6.0 Ed-Apo Photography Scope from Snypex. This digiscoping scope was a game changer for my photography, allowing me to capture stunning images with my DSLR camera.
One of the standout features of this scope was the dual speed focuser. It made it incredibly easy to achieve precise focus, even in low-light conditions. The scope's focal length of 432mm and f-stop of f6.0 provided a beautiful and sharp image, which was especially noticeable when using the optional eyepiece.
Moreover, the scope was built to last, with a durable white paint coating on its aluminum housing. The 1/4"-20 tripod mounts at both ends of the shoe made it easy to balance the weight, and the integrated dovetail plate was a handy addition for quick-release heads.
However, I did encounter a minor issue when trying to attain focus on stars. Despite the scope's apochromatic doublet lens, I found that achieving proper focus was a bit challenging. Additionally, while the price was reasonable at $160, I noticed that it was listed for a much higher price on the product website.
Overall, the Knight PT 72mm f/6.0 Ed-Apo Photography Scope from Snypex is a powerful and versatile tool for photography enthusiasts. With a few minor adjustments, it could become an exceptional choice for both digiscoping and spotting scopes.

🔗Shrewd Nomad Scope - Durable 35mm .019 RH Compact Riflescope

https://preview.redd.it/qowel3d0242d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba91a5564475fdebc1a6bb688e3cede3537a4eeb
During my time as a hunter, I had the opportunity to test out the Shrewd Nomad Scope 35mm. With its sleek CNC machined 6061-T56 aluminum body, the scope truly stood out. One of my favorite features was the 0.012" throat, providing a minimum obstruction for the target. However, mounting this scope took a bit more effort than I anticipated - it required a 3/8" Shrewd scope rod.
Adding to the overall experience was the variety of optional sunshades threaded into the front and rear of the scope that allowed me to make adjustments as needed. A nice touch were the three colored levels and sticks of fiber that came included, really adding a pinch of personalized flair. Nonetheless, it didn't come without its quirks - I had to get a 10-32 x 2 in order for it to securely mount.
Overall, the Shrewd Nomad Scope 35mm was a well-made, durable tool for any hunting enthusiast. While there were a few hiccups along the way, the benefits certainly outweighed the inconveniences. I would definitely recommend it to other hunters looking for a high-quality scope that can withstand the test of time.

🔗Athlon Optics Cronus G2 High-Definition Spotting Scope for Compact Rifles

https://preview.redd.it/9r4015m0242d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f26247abf9ff2173310fa1f1b7ede07771a4e22a
As a nature enthusiast, I recently had the chance to try out the Athlon Optics Cronus G2 20-60x86mm UHD Spotting Scope and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Boasting an Apochromatic Lens System and ED glass, I was able to achieve great color definition, clarity, and light transmission even in the trickiest of lighting conditions.
Even in the most challenging settings, such as dimly lit forests or shadowed treelines, the Cronus G2's enhanced contrast allowed me to easily separate my subject from its surroundings. Its versatile magnification ranges from 20x to 60x, offering unparalleled flexibility when scouting for game.
However, I did notice that the scope might be a bit bulky for some beginners, as it weighs around 40 oz. However, its overall performance and the smoothness of its single focus wheel make up for that setback.
In conclusion, the Athlon Optics Cronus G2 20-60x86mm UHD Spotting Scope is a fantastic investment for anyone looking for premium optics at an affordable price. I highly recommend it for hunters, birdwatchers, and nature lovers who desire exceptional clarity and image quality.

🔗High-Performance Riflescope with Compact Design

As an avid birdwatcher, I've been using the Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotting Scope for a while now, and it's been nothing short of remarkable. The compact design makes it super convenient to carry around, and I love how lightweight it feels. The clarity and sharpness of the image are outstanding, making it so easy to spot even the tiniest details on my feathered friends.
The adjustable magnification is another feature I've grown fond of. It's so effortless to switch between different magnification levels, giving me that extra edge when I need to zoom in on a specific bird. I also appreciate the ergonomic shape of the eyepiece, making it comfortable to use for extended periods.
However, the one downside I've noticed is the slight difficulty in focusing. Sometimes, it takes a bit of finesse to get the image looking razor-sharp, but once you've got it sorted, it's smooth sailing from there.
Overall, the Vortex Razor HD 13-39x56 Spotting Scope has been an absolute game-changer for me. Its superb optics, convenience, and ease of use have made it a go-to tool for all my birdwatching adventures, and I can't imagine going back to using anything else.

🔗ATN Auxiliary Ballistic Laser 1000 Terra: Accurate Range-Finding Laser for Hunting

https://preview.redd.it/14bfwgg1242d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a1abf3501d21d8341d8f0a5b37da785845a71832
I recently had the opportunity to try out the ATN Corporation ABL 1000 Elements Terra - ACMUABL1000ET. It's a fantastic range-finding laser that easily attaches to any ATN Smart HD day, night, or thermal riflescope. The touch of a button provides precise point of impact adjustments for a distance to the target, ensuring accuracy within one yard or meter.
One feature that stood out to me is its compatibility with a wide range of ATN riflescopes, allowing for seamless integration. The laser also records the distance to the target on videos shot by the smart scope, providing valuable data for future reference. It's built to withstand high-caliber recoil, thanks to its hardened aluminum alloy construction. With a battery runtime of 12 hours, it's perfect for extended hunting trips.
While the ABL 1000 Elements Terra was a pleasure to use, I did notice that it can be a bit pricey for some hunters. However, considering its features and performance, I believe it's a worthy investment for those seeking the best in range-finding technology. Overall, this laser has become an essential tool in my hunting arsenal.

🔗Leupold GR Compact Spotting Scope: Lightweight, High-Resolution Observation

https://preview.redd.it/g2snarn1242d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc99b0291068be5ec1644bf553f019481535c09e
I've had the pleasure of using the Leupold Gold Ring Compact Spotting Scope for a bit now and I must say, it's a game-changer for those who value portability yet don't want to compromise on image clarity. This device offers a 10-20x40mm magnification range that delivers incredibly bright, high-resolution images.
The most impressive feature in my opinion, is the prism-less 'Z' shaped path utilizing mirrors, which significantly compresses the long optical system into half its length. The result is a compact scope that doesn't skimp on performance. Despite being small, it captures stunning details, offering a crisp view that's perfect for birdwatching in the backyard or spotting wildlife while on a nature hike.
Another advantage is its waterproof and fogproof body, making it suitable for any weather condition. And don't forget about the ease of portability - with a weight of only 15.8 oz, it's small enough to be carried around your neck yet capable of standing steady on a tripod.
The anti-reflective coatings are also a nice touch, providing better light transmission and improving overall image quality. The scope body is made of carbon fiber, ensuring durability without adding unnecessary weight.
However, there are some aspects that aren't perfect- the focus knob can be a bit sensitive which makes it more challenging to get a clear view, especially if you're not used to it. Also, for some users, it may not be their primary choice for benchrest shooting, but that wasn't a requirement for me.
Overall, the Leupold Gold Ring Compact Spotting Scope is an excellent choice for those looking for a portable yet high-performance spotting scope, providing a clear view of the world while not compromising on size or weight.

Buyer's Guide

Compact riflescopes are designed to provide a reliable and accurate sighting solution for shooters who require a high-quality optic without adding unnecessary bulk or weight to their rifle.

Important Features to Consider

  • Objective Lens Size: A larger objective lens size will typically provide more light and a brighter image, but may add weight and bulk to the scope.
  • Magnification: Choose a suitable magnification range that suits your shooting needs. Consider factors like the maximum effective range and shooting distance when choosing the magnification.
  • Reticle Style: Select a reticle style that best suits your shooting needs. Common reticle types include duplex, mildot, or mil-dot.
  • Field of View: A wider field of view can be helpful for target acquisition and tracking moving targets, while a narrower field can provide a more focused view.
  • Optical Clarity and Brightness: Ensuring that the lenses are of good quality and providing good light gathering capability is crucial for maintaining a clear, sharp sight picture.

Considerations for Different Shooting Applications

When choosing a compact riflescope, consider the shooting application and how the scope will be used. Different applications may require certain features and traits from the scope.

General Advice for Selecting the Right Compact Riflescope

  • Test before you buy: If possible, try the scope out before purchasing to ensure it meets your needs and performs as expected.
  • Durability and Weatherproofing: A good compact riflescope should be able to withstand the elements, so consider factors like waterproof seals, fogproof lenses, and shock-absorbing materials in its construction.
  • Ease of Adjustment: Ensure the scope is easy to adjust for windage and elevation, and that adjustments can be made quickly and accurately during shooting.

What are compact riflescopes?

Compact riflescopes are smaller optics designed for hunting and shooting enthusiasts who require a portable and lightweight scope. They offer similar quality and performance as full-sized scopes but in a more compact and lightweight package.

How do compact riflescopes compare to full-sized riflescopes?

Compact riflescopes typically have lower magnification ranges compared to full-sized scopes. While some may offer higher magnification, they usually come at the cost of image quality and light gathering ability. Full-sized scopes, on the other hand, often have better optics and provide a clearer and brighter image. However, compact riflescopes are more portable and easier to carry during hunting and shooting sessions.

https://preview.redd.it/iocs0q63242d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=53cfac18d2b94ee6aea1688bbd8b6a42ff202e66

Which brands produce high-quality compact riflescopes?

There are several well-regarded brands that manufacture high-quality compact riflescopes. Some of these brands include Vortex Optics, Leupold, Burris, and Nikon. These companies typically offer a wide range of options to suit different shooting needs and budgets.

What are some key features to look for in a compact riflescope?

  • Durability: Look for a riflescope made with high-quality materials, such as aircraft-grade aluminum, to ensure it can withstand harsh conditions.
  • Optical Clarity: A good compact riflescope should have clear and sharp optics, even at lower light levels.
  • Weight: Consider the weight of the compact riflescope, as it will be carried during long hunting or shooting sessions.
  • Magnification Range: Determine the necessary magnification range for your intended use, as compact riflescopes may have lower magnification options compared to full-sized scopes.
  • Reticle Options: Some compact riflescopes offer different reticle options, such as those with illuminated or ballistic features, which can be useful for various shooting scenarios.

How much should I expect to spend on a good quality compact riflescope?

The cost of a compact riflescope can vary greatly depending on the brand, features, and magnification range. Generally, you can find good quality compact riflescopes in the $400 to $800 range. However, prices can go up to $1,000 or more for premium models from well-regarded brands.

How do I install and mount a compact riflescope?

The installation of a compact riflescope typically requires a 2-piece scope mount or a 1-piece Picatinny rail mount. It is essential to use the appropriate screws and torque settings to ensure a secure and accurate mount, which is crucial for accurate shooting.

🔗Hornady RAPiD Night Guard Safe with RFID Technology and USB Charging

https://preview.redd.it/vjeyg4aa142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=04a004fa68d9514634d9d2c3f3e332c6e7adb701
The Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is an impressive blend of style and security. I've been using it for a while now, and I must say I am quite impressed with the product. The tempered glass front panel is sleek and elegant, complementing any bedroom decor.
The patented RFID technology is definitely a game-changer. I love being able to unlock the safe without even touching it, which is ideal when you're in a dark room and don't want to fumble around for your keys or access code. The 4 included RFID tags make it quick and easy to program the safe to open for you and your family.
One of the features that really stands out to me is the two USB-A ports for charging my devices. It's incredibly handy to have a place to charge my phone or other gadgets right next to my bed.
On the downside, I do wish the RFID reader and keypad were a bit more discreet. They're still functional, but they're quite prominent on the front panel. It would be nice if they were hidden away a bit more.
The heavy duty exterior housing and hardened interior locking lugs are a great feature, ensuring that the safe is built to last. However, I do wish there was a bit more padding on the interior for the items inside to prevent any potential scratches or damages.
Overall, I am quite satisfied with the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard. It's a fantastic bedside safe that offers quick and easy access, as well as a place to charge your devices. Definitely worth the investment!

I have had the pleasure of using the Stealth UL50 Gun Safe for a few months now, and I must say, it has exceeded my expectations. As someone who values both security and organization, this gun safe has proven to be an excellent choice for my needs.
One of the standout features of this safe is its impressive fire protection. With a 1-hour fire rating and an intumescent door seal that expands seven times its size, I can rest assured that my valuables are well-protected in case of a fire. The intumescent seal ensures that smoke and heat are kept out, while keeping the contents of the safe safe from the elements.
Another feature that impressed me is the high-security lock. The UL-listed Type 1 electronic lock, along with the steel hardplate and relocker, offers top-notch protection against unauthorized access. I particularly appreciate the red light protection, which safeguards the lock against attacks that might try to bypass it.
In terms of capacity, the UL50 Gun Safe is perfect for storing up to 50 long guns. Its spacious interior, complete with 4-way boltwork and leather-lined shelves, ensures that my firearms are well-organized and secure. Additionally, the fully adjustable door panel organizer makes it easy to customize the layout to fit my needs.
However, there are a few aspects that I feel could be improved. Firstly, the exterior of the safe could be made more durable. Secondly, I would prefer if there were more options for customizing the internal shelving. Overall, though, these are minor issues when weighed against the numerous benefits the Stealth UL50 Gun Safe offers.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend the Stealth UL50 Gun Safe to anyone in the market for a high-quality, secure storage solution for their firearms. Its robust fire protection, high-security features, and spacious interior make it an excellent choice for those seeking peace of mind in protecting their valuables.

The holes for mounting to the wall and/or floor are another great addition. This gives me the flexibility to install the safe wherever I see fit, whether it's in my bedroom or living room.
However, no product is perfect. There are some aspects of this gun safe that could be improved. For instance, the keyed access can be a bit cumbersome at times. While it does offer an added layer of security, it can also be a nuisance if you misplace the key.
In conclusion, this affordable 5-gun safe from American Furniture Classics has been a worthwhile investment for me. Its robust construction and secure 3-directional bolt system make it an ideal choice for those looking to store their firearms safely and securely. While the keyed access may require some getting used to, the overall quality and performance of this product are well worth the cost.

I recently needed a gun safe for my firearms and I stumbled upon the VEVOR 6 Gun Safe. As a responsible gun owner, I always prioritize my gun's security. The VEVOR Gun Safe not only promised advanced security features but also boasted a durable construction.

This feature ensures that only authorized individuals can access the safe, providing an added layer of protection. The dimensions of the safe were perfect for storing my firearms, fitting them perfectly without any issues.
However, there was one downside: it was a bit heavier than I expected. At 82 lb, it required some effort to move around when needed. As a first-time gun owner, I was in the market for a small and affordable security cabinet. I came across the American Furniture Classics 5 Gun Starter Metal Security Cabinet and decided to give it a try. I must say, this cabinet has exceeded my expectations in terms of its 3-point locking system, which keeps my firearms safe and secure. The cabinet is made from high-quality black powder-coated paint, making it both attractive and durable.
One of the standout features of this cabinet is its soft foam barrel rest and carpeted floor, which protects my long guns from scratches and damage. It's also fully assembled right out of the box, so I didn't have to worry about any confusing instructions nor spend hours putting it together. Additionally, it includes four expansion bolts to secure it to the floor, providing even more peace of mind.
However, there are a few cons to consider. Some users have reported issues with the cabinet's build quality, stating that the metal seems thin and may not withstand a determined break-in attempt. Additionally, the cabinet's lock mechanism has been described as "flimsy" by some, leaving me slightly concerned about the overall security it provides.
In conclusion, the American Furniture Classics 5 Gun Starter Metal Security Cabinet has become an essential part of my home, providing a secure and affordable storage solution for my long guns. While it may not be the most robust option on the market, it provides more than enough security for everyday use.

However, there were some cons worth mentioning. The door of the safe had a bit of play in it when closed and locked, which could be improved upon in future models. Furthermore, the instruction manual could have been more comprehensive, especially when it came to resetting the combo on the electronic lock.
Overall, I would recommend the Winchester 36 Long Gun Safe to anyone looking for a reliable, well-made safe with ample storage and good security features. It may not be perfect, but at this price point, it's hard to beat.

However, I did notice that the safe is quite heavy, which can make transportation difficult. The size of the box also seemed to be larger than originally estimated, which was a bit of a hassle.
Overall, my experience with the Wasatch 24 Gun Fire and Water Safe with E-Lock 24EGW has been positive. I feel confident that my valuables are safely guarded, thanks to its impressive fire and water resistance capabilities. While there were a few minor drawbacks, they do not outweigh the fantastic features of this safe.

Sure, I'd love to help with that. I've been using this Stack-on Convertible 18-Gun Cabinet, Black for the past few months and I have to say, it's been a game-changer for me. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the 3-point locking system. It's the perfect safety net for keeping my guns secure. The cabinet also comes with removable and adjustable shelves, making it really customizable to fit my storage needs.
One of the best features, in my opinion, is the molded barrel rest with scope standoffs. It's a small detail that makes a big difference, especially when I'm storing scoped rifles. The cabinet is also equipped with foam-padded shelves and a partition, further enhancing its capacity and flexibility.
However, there are a couple of things that could use some improvement. Firstly, the instructions on how to set it up were not very clear. It took me a lot more time than I expected to get it up and running. Secondly, the quality of the components could be better. Buyer's Guide

When selecting the best compact rifle safe, it is essential to consider various factors that can help you make the right choice. This guide outlines some critical features to help you during your search.

22 Caliber Protection

https://preview.redd.it/m45u8fph142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b16134eeb63bf46c92dea844e05fc068d99ea1d5
First and foremost, you should check if the safe can protect a 22 caliber rimfire. Many compact rifle safes are designed only for larger centerfire calibers and won't offer sufficient protection for smaller rounds. Ensure that the safe can accommodate your firearms properly.

Size and Weight

The size and weight of a compact rifle safe are crucial factors to consider. If you plan on carrying your safe to different locations, you should look for a lightweight option. Additionally, make sure that the safe is compact enough for your storage needs. Pay attention to the internal dimensions so that you can store your firearms efficiently.

Construction Material and Quality

Compact rifle safes are typically made of metal or high-quality plastic. Metal safes provide superior protection but tend to be heavier and more expensive. High-quality plastic safes can be more affordable, but they may not offer the same level of protection. Invest in a safe that offers sturdy construction and has features like a tamper-resistant lock and reinforced door hinges.

https://preview.redd.it/w7vp7yei142d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=332a4fa4d6acb7e823ec43c26d589da33dde3a98

Ease of Use and Access

A compact rifle safe should offer easy access to your firearms when needed. Look for a safe with quick-access features such as a programmable lock, a recombination lock, or electronic keypad. You should also consider the safe's overall ease of use, including its weight and dimensions.

Security Features

Security is essential when dealing with firearms. Ensure that the safe you choose has proper security features such as reinforced locking mechanisms, drill-resistant steel, and a tamper-resistant lock.

Bolting and Anchoring Systems

Compact rifle safes should have proper bolting and anchoring systems to ensure maximum protection. Make sure that the safe can be anchored to the floor or a wall using hardware not included in the package.

Price and Warranty

Before making a purchase, consider your budget and preferred price range. Compare the features, quality, and price of various compact rifle safes.
It is also essential to look for a safe with a warranty to protect your investment. A longer warranty period typically indicates that the manufacturer has confidence in their product's quality and durability.
By considering these important features, you will be better equipped to choose a comprehensive and reliable compact rifle safe to meet your needs.

What is a compact rifle safe?

A compact rifle safe is a smaller version of a traditional gun safe. It provides a secure storage solution for firearms, ammunition, and other valuables. Compact rifle safes are designed for people living in apartments or smaller homes where space is at a premium.

What features should I look for in a compact rifle safe?

When selecting a compact rifle safe, consider the following features:
  • Dimensions: Ensure the safe is small enough to fit in your space, but large enough to accommodate your firearms.
  • Security: Look for a safe with high-quality locks and construction to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Material: Choose a safe made from solid steel or a high-quality alloy for maximum durability.
  • Fire Protection: Some compact rifle safes offer fire protection to keep your firearms safe during a fire emergency.
  • Storage options: Look for internal compartments and shelving to organize your firearms and accessories.

How do I protect my compact rifle safe from theft?

To protect your compact rifle safe from theft, consider the following:
  • Install the safe in a hidden or inconspicuous location.
  • Choose a safe with a high-security lock and consider adding additional locks or alarms.
  • Don't leave the combination or keys in an easily accessible location.
  • Install a decoy safe to throw off potential thieves.

Can I store other valuables in a compact rifle safe?

Yes, you can store other valuables in a compact rifle safe, such as jewelry, important documents, or electronics. This provides an added layer of security for your belongings.

How much should I expect to spend on a compact rifle safe?

The cost of a compact rifle safe can vary depending on the brand, features, and size. You can expect to pay anywhere from $150 to $1,000 or more for a high-quality compact rifle safe.

2024.05.23 06:30 Knoberchanezer "This isn't how I died": Melodie Dugan's Apocalypse Pt.27

The Whole Thing

4/14/94

I stepped back from the guy in disbelief. He held his bandaged hand up to his chest, hugging it and turning away from me like he was ashamed of it.
"Oh my god! You're bitten, aren't you?" I gasped.
He nodded sheepishly. "It burns," he whimpered.
"Wha... When did it happen?" I asked.
"I dunno. A week ago, I think. I… I just wanna be like them already," he said as tears filled his eyes.
"But you're not sick, right?" I said.
He shook his head and started to sob, "I... I just want this to be over," he cried. “I hate how they all look at me.”
I stepped forward to comfort him as he balled.
"Hey, hey, hey. What's your name, dude?" I asked sincerely, gently putting the back of my hand on his forehead.
He wasn’t lying. He was cool to the touch, and I couldn’t feel any fever.
"Daniel," he sniffled.
"Daniel, huh? I'm Mel. Can I... Can I see the bite?" I asked.
"Are you a doctor?" Daniel asked.
"No, but I'm the closest thing to one you have right now," I pointed out.
Daniel tentatively gave me his wounded hand. I took it and gently unwrapped the bandages. The wound looked well-dressed, but he hadn't changed the dressing in a while, or ever. The bandages had yellowed, and it stank as I peeled them off.
"Who wrapped this up for you?" I asked, trying to take his mind away from any pain.
"My friend, Elise," he sobbed.
"Did she turn? Is she one of them now?"
Daniel nodded.
I unwrapped the last few turns and saw the wound. It had started to heal and scab, just like mine had all those months ago. My eyes grew wide, and I gasped in shock.
"What? What is it? What's wrong?" Daniel asked frantically.
"Err... Nothing. You said it burns, right?" I inquired.
Daniel nodded.
"But you're not sick, right?" I continued.
"Yeah, everyone got sick but me," he pointed out.
"Daniel, I think you're gonna be ok. I think you're immune," I said with a hopeful smile.
"What do you mean? How do you know?" He asked.
"Look," I said, turning my head to the left and pulling back the collar of my Dad's bomber, revealing the ugly bite scar on my neck. "One of them got me right around the time this whole thing started, and I'm still here. Still breathing."
"You... You think I'll be ok?" He sniffed.
"Well, why don't we find out, huh?" I said, giving him a pat on the arm. "Here. Let me dress that up for you."
I dropped my Go Bag and pulled out my first aid kit. I grabbed a bottle of disinfectant and a bandage. I opened the bottle, offered my hand, and he gave me his. I took it and pulled it towards me to inspect the wound. I poured the bottle on it without warning, and Daniel screamed, leaping back and pulling his hand away from me. He cried and yelped loudly, clutching at his wrist and contorting his hand in agony.
"Dude! I'm sorry, but you gotta keep the fuck down!" I growled through gritted teeth, apologising for the pain I'd just inflicted.
I checked left and right for any dead ones who might have heard this six-foot, farm-boy-looking guy screaming his lungs out over a little splash of disinfectant. I knew it hurt; I'd done it to myself on the bites I'd received, but Daniel couldn't take it.
"Calm down! You'll attract them!" I yelled over his cries.
The fear of the dead ones showing up made him gulp it in and stand up, whimpering and holding his wounded paw. I reached out, and he pulled his hand back.
"Please! No more of that stuff," he pleaded.
"Don't worry. I'm not trying that again," I said, rolling my eyes as I started to bind the wound with a bandage. "You can get gangrene for all I care if that's how you're gonna take it. You gotta keep it down, dude. How else did you guys survive this long?"
"We had Father Jim," Daniel sniffled.
"Yeah? I heard about him. He sounds like a real stand-up guy," I said, trying to make conversation while I finished dressing his hand.
"Did you know him?" Daniel asked.
"Only through what I found. I ran into your little expedition about a month ago. They were looking for medication, right? Did Father Jim get better?" I asked.
"No. He died. They all died," Daniel said, tears returning to his eyes.
I gave him a second. He wasn’t even looking at me, just looking through me, lost in shock and wherever his mind was taking him to protect him from confronting all he’d lost. “Hey,” I spoke softly, “You’re gonna be ok. It’s gonna be ok. You’re not alone,” I guided him back to the RV. He lumbered slowly behind me and struggled to keep pace, but I gave him time. For the next few days, we cruised around rural Kentucky. We didn’t even see a single dead one. Daniel took the back bed my Dad used to sleep in, and I slept above the cab, my Beretta under my pillow, just in case.
Daniel took his time recovering. Physically, the guy was OK. The bite wound recovered well. I told him it would turn into a gnarly scar like mine, smiling and trying to cheer him up, but he didn’t react. The poor guy was like a lost, lonely child. He spent most of his days catatonically staring, and at night, he would cry quietly. I just gave him his time. I had no idea how to handle this. I was barely able to understand it myself. I had been alone, living in my own fiction with Dad and Madeline, hoping that I might find another living person. And here that person was a crying, broken young guy I now had to care for.
Daniel had been too shocked or scared to leave the RV. He hardly ate and barely got up from the back bed, but I'd had enough by the time the fourteenth rolled around. I didn’t care if he wanted to stink up the place; I wanted to get showered and changed. “Look, dude. We’re both getting a little ripe in here, and I’m not getting changed in front of you,” I reasoned, but poor Daniel was timidly sitting on the back bed. “There aren’t any out there, man. Trust me, it’s ok,” I said.
I tried my best to understand his fear of the dead ones. It was crippling him and trapping him here in my RV. Whatever trauma he'd been through, he was lugging around inside him. No matter what I did or said, I couldn't coax much out of him besides simple answers. I knew his name. I knew he'd been with a group of survivors at that complex in March Ridge. I knew they had their pastor leading them until he died, along with the rest of them, and that had turned poor six-foot Daniel into a lost little boy.
“Hey, Daniel. You can come back in now,” I said when I was all cleaned up, opening the door and letting him back into the RV.
Daniel climbed slowly up the steps with his head down, walked to the back bed and sat back down. I put a jay in my mouth and stood by the door.
“I'm gonna go for a smoke, dude. The bathroom’s all yours,” I said, trying to hint him towards getting washed up, but he wasn't listening.
It was like he wasn't even there. Like a lost, stray dog that didn’t trust humans anymore, he timidly lumbered around, reeking of mange and b.o. I shook my head, stepped, and lit my jay, closing the door behind me.
I'd parked us by large open fields of farmland on the edge of some woods. I could see for miles around in the warm spring of the late Kentucky morning. With nothing better to do, I took a stroll along the woods until I was far enough away from the RV to talk out loud without being heard. Despite being around another living person for the first time in almost a year, I felt so alone. While Daniel struggled to adjust to his new reality, I was adjusting to mine and having no one to talk to. So, hoping to find solace, I slumped against a tree at the edge of the woods, smoked my jay, and closed my eyes.
“Hell of a find, huh, Songbird?” Dad said, leaning in next to me against the tree.
I beamed out a relieved smile, opened my eyes and turned to see him smile back.
“He didn't turn. He's immune, like me,” I said.
“He ain't doing much else, either,” Dad scoffed.
“It must have been traumatic,” I reasoned.
“You got over it, Mel. The end of the world passed you by, and you rolled with it,” Dad pointed out.
“Did I, or did I go just as insane as he did?” I asked rhetorically, looking my dead Dad in the eye with a raised eyebrow. He paused for a moment, curled his lip and shrugged.
“Touche,” he admitted.
I leaned back against the tree, took a drag and held the smoke in my lungs a little longer than I would normally. I let it all out in a sigh through my nose and closed my eyes.
“What the fuck am I gonna do with this guy, Dad?” I asked.
Dad took a few seconds to consider, then said, “Well, you could start by finding him some fresh clothes.”
“Shit,” I muttered. “I didn't think about that.”
“Maybe you have been alone too long,” Dad pointed out.
He wasn't wrong, but I hadn't realised how out of touch I'd been. It was a sudden realisation of how much I'd forgotten what real human contact was supposed to be. I hadn't had to think of anyone but myself up until this point. Dad and Madeline had just been along for the ride.
“I have an idea,” I said aloud, hauling myself to my feet and walking back to the RV.
I climbed into the driver's seat and told Daniel we were hitting the road and that he should buckle up. Daniel didn't even ask where we were going. He had yet to ask since I found him. I had no idea if his head was so full of trauma that his thought process wasn’t functioning or if his mind was completely empty. Neither would have surprised me.
I drove the RV to the intersection south of West Point. We were gonna kill two birds with one stone; I needed fuel, he needed clothes. I didn’t know how long he'd been wearing the rags hanging off him, but I felt guilty that it had taken me this long and a conversation with my Dad to notice. It also worried me slightly that he hadn't even mentioned it himself.
“Hey, Daniel,” I called out to him as we hopped out of the RV after I pulled it up to the gas pump and killed the engine.
He craned his neck and looked at me, waiting for me to respond.
“Can you give me a hand with something?” I asked.
“Uhh… yeah… ok,” he nodded.
He followed me around to the side of the RV, where I opened one of the cargo hatches. Inside was a generator I'd been keeping for power on the move and most of my tools. Being used to doing this alone, I grabbed the generator with both hands and lugged it towards the gas station.
“Can you grab my tools, dude?” I asked, and he obliged.
“Do you… can you handle that?” He asked as I hauled the genny and lowered it down about a foot from the gas station power box
“Nah. I got it. I've been doing this kinda shit for a while now,” I said, gesturing that it was no big deal. “Thanks,” I said as he placed my toolbox beside it.
“Do you need to fix it or something?” Daniel drawled.
“Nope. I need to hook it up to the gas station to power it up so I can fill up the RV and a couple of gas cans. I have something for you, though,” I explained.
I returned to the RV, reached into the storage and pulled out a folded-up duffle bag. Carrying it in one hand, I strolled towards the Barg'n'clothes at the north side of the intersection.
“Come on!” I shouted cheerily as I turned around and gestured at Daniel to follow with a smile.
He followed me across the parking lot and through the double doors of the huge outlet. The place was dark and dusty, but enough of the midday sun beamed through the windows to see the racks of clothing—all shapes, sizes, and styles of cheap, off-brands.
“Here,” I said, thrusting the folded duffle bag against his chest and letting him take it from me. “I'll get the RV gassed up. You do some shopping,” I said with a wink.
“What? I just take stuff?” Daniel gawked.
“Of course, dude. Take whatever you want,” I shrugged.
“But, like, isn't it stealing?” He asked.
That question visibly struck me because how I looked at him made his face drop slightly in shock. My confused frown must have made me look angry.
“Daniel, there's… there's no one left to steal from. The world ended, man. Whatever you don't take is gonna rot here, dude,” I explained.
“You're sure no one will care?” He asked sincerely.
“Where do you think I got my winter clothes from? Trust me, no one's alive to care,” I said, waving my hand and heading for the door. “I’ll be by the gas station if you need me. Take your time. Try stuff on. Get cleaned up.”
I left Daniel on his shopping spree while I hooked up the genny to the gas station. With the afternoon heating up, I peeled off my plaid shirt, tied it around my waist and got to work. I was filling up some gas cans when Daniel finally emerged from the store in fresh clothes and a stuffed duffle bag. He wore a plaid pattern similar to mine, only yellow instead of red, some baggy jeans and a green and white Kentucky ball cap. He looked less like the rag-clad shell of a person I'd pulled out of March Ridge and more like someone who was, at least outwardly, looking better.
“Looking good,” I said with a smile.
“Thanks,” Daniel said, returning it. “I didn't know that covered your whole arm,” he said, gesturing at my snake tattoo.
“Yeah, cool, huh?” I said, giving him a good view of my right arm. “You got any?” I asked.
“Nah. My Mama never liked 'em,” he said.
“She probably wouldn't have liked me then, huh?” I asked.
“Well, you seem like a good person, Mel,” he said, smiling but not looking at me.
Daniel turned to look inside the gas station, now powered up with the lights on inside. His eyes grew wide as he stared down towards the ground inside.
“That's the fucker that gave me this,” I said, pointing at the bite scar on my neck.
He took his eyes off the skeleton with a missing skull that I'd left on the floor that day in late July and turned to see me craning my neck.
“He wasn't the only one either,” I stated.
“You've been bitten more than once?” Daniel exclaimed.
“Sure, the other one was a high school kid. Got me right here,” I said, pointing at the bite scar below my collarbone. “Almost bit my fucking tit off,” I said with a wry smile.
Daniel winced at me. I didn't know if it was due to seeing the scar or if me using the word “tit” made him uncomfortable. In either case, I quickly changed the subject.
“So, it's pretty hot, and I'm pretty hungry. I’m gonna get the grill out and cook us some fish. How about it?” I suggested.
I grilled, we ate, and I brought out some beers and lit a small fire in the middle of the intersection, tossing wood and whatever crap was lying around that would burn. I offered Daniel a beer, but he refused.
“Mama used to tell me that my Dad was a drinker, so I never wanted to,” he explained.
“That's fair,” I said. “Was it just you and your Mom?” I asked.
“She uh… she was the only one who got me, you know?” He said. “She was all I had until, you know, then I had Father Jim, Elise, Beth, Derrick, all the others,” he listed before going silent. “They're all… them now,” he said as he curled in on himself, teled in his eyes.
It took me a while to come up with something to say, but I jumped in before his quiet sobs turned into whole cries.
“I know that feeling, dude. Believe me, I do. You can't let them get to you, though. They're just part of the world now, and we can beat them. I've done it,” I claimed.
“Huh?” Daniel said, looking at me with glossy eyes.
“See that over there,” I said, nodding towards the burned-down dealership and blackened burnt-out cars. “Not long after the whole end of the world, when people outside Kentucky stopped broadcasting, I cleared this place out—learned my lesson, though. They can creep up on you, but they're slow and stupid. Now, the only bunch around for miles are up North in West Point.”
“How many have you killed?” Daniel asked.
“Fuck if I know, dude. I don't exactly keep count when they're all burning in a pile,” I scoffed, sipping my beer.
“Are they still, you know, them?” He asked.
“I… I don't even know if it was just me going crazy or if I really did hear it, but I've heard a few of them talking. Just a word here and there, nothing more than that. If whoever they were is still in there, it isn't coming back. Putting them down for good is, well, it's mercy. Madeline taught me that,” I said quietly over my beer.
“Who's Madeline?” Daniel asked.
“She was my girlfr… my wife,” I corrected myself.
Daniel looked at me confused, gawking with that slack-jawed look under the brim of his cap.
“I know, I know, girls can't get married to other girls, but Maddy was raised Catholic, and she always wanted to be married,” I started. “One day, before all this end-of-the-world crap, she put this ring on my finger,” I said, fiddling with the silver wedding band. “She died a few weeks after,” I went on, as tears started to fill my eyes and reality started to dawn on me. “And for those last few weeks, she didn't call me anything but her wife,” I said, choking on the last word and trying to hold down the sobs, but everything hit me all at once.
The fabricated world I'd built out of frosted glass in my head suddenly shattered in Daniel's presence as I told him about Madeline. I had spent almost a year surviving the apocalypse when any average person would have been grieving. And now I grieved for Madeline, out loud and in the open, in front of the first living person I'd seen in what felt like a lifetime. I balled up my hand and held it against my mouth as my body shook with quiet, subdued sobs. My aching heart punctured the lump in my throat as the real world poured into me like cold, icy water and the fact that Maddy was dead, buried, and gone slapped me in the face once more after almost a year of refusing to see it. I turned away from Daniel as the tears rolled down my cheeks. He said nothing as I kept my eyes tightly shut, trying to compose myself. I sniffed, wiped the tears from my cheeks and took a deep breath.
“Yeah, Maddy was my wife. It might not have been real to anyone else, but it was real to her,” I paused. “It was real to me,” I added, looking back at the ring on my hand. “I haven't talked about it to anyone. I haven’t been able to talk about it to anyone,” I admitted. “She died right before all this went down, and I've been alone ever since.”
The two of us sat silently as the fire cracked at our feet and the sun fell below the treeline.
“Sorry for unloading on you there,” I sighed aloud, trying to chuckle awkwardly to lighten the mood.
“It's ok. You've really been alone this whole time?” He asked.
“Yeah. I guess it wasn't all bad, but yeah, just me,” I answered.
“I… I was trying to get help for my Mama when it happened,” Daniel started. “She was getting sick. She got really hot, and then she stopped breathing. I went to get help, but they… they were everywhere. Derrick from the store where I work grabbed me. A bunch of people were running for the army barracks.”
Daniel paused there. It was his turn to get choked up. I let the tears fill his eyes without judgment.
“I tried to get them to help my Mama, but they said it was too dangerous. I didn't leave until… until there was no one left but them,” he gasped before crying.
I let him ball it out as the memories of the trauma he'd suffered came bubbling back up to the surface.
“I just wanted to be like them. I hate how they look at me. They look so mad, like they hate me,” Daniel sobbed.
“I don't think they hate you. I don't think they can hate anything, Daniel. They're dead,” I stated.
“But they can't be. They're walking around,” he retorted.
“I don't know what kind of disease caused it, but some of the shit I've seen happen to them. Some of the shit I've done to them, you can't survive that. They're dead, dude, and nothing is bringing them back,” I said.
Daniel took a long pause as he composed himself.
“What do you think caused it?” He asked.
“Fuck if I know, man. There was this one guy, though. I saw him with his family right at the beginning of it all. He worked at the military base, and I’ve been trying to find it since. I found his home in Ekron and some dead special forces dudes. They seemed to know more than anyone else did. Not that it even matters anymore,” I sighed.
“Derrick said it was something in the Spiffo burgers. He said they had human meat in them, and it made people go crazy or something,” Daniel said, looking over at the Spiffos on the other side of the intersection.
“For real?” I laughed. “Dude, when I thought I would turn into one of them, I ate everything in that place. I wanted to be the last person alive to enjoy a Spiffo burger.” I said, gesturing at the same Spiffos
“Mama never let me eat fast food. She said it was full of junk. Maybe Derrick was right?” Daniel sighed, staring into the fire.
“Maybe,” I sighed as well.
For a while, we sat there staring in silence. Daniel was lost in his thoughts while my slightly buzzed brain was half baking a plan.
“I have an idea,” I said, smiling.
I got up, walked over to the Barg'n’ Clothes and grabbed the first t-shirt closest to the entrance. Then, I marched back to the RV and pulled out one of the gas cans I'd filled earlier. I took them to Daniel by the fire and carefully filled my empty beer bottles with gasoline.
“What are you doing?” Daniel asked curiously.
I filled the last empty bottle and started ripping the t-shirt into rags.
“We're gonna take our revenge on Spiffo Burger on behalf of all mankind,” I said with a wicked laugh.
As I jammed the t-shirt strips into the tops of the bottles and the gas inside, we were left with four Molotovs ready to go.
“Here,” I said, handing two of them to Daniel. “Let's have some fun,”
With my two in hand, I marched towards the Spiffo Burger and stopped when I was within my throwing distance. I put one down at my feet and turned the other upside down to soak the rag while I lit it with my lighter.
“Fuck you, Spiffo! You killed the human race!” I shouted as I hurled my Molotov right through the window.
The glass smashed, and fire lit up the inside. Flames danced through the window, and an orange glow shone against the waning light of the evening in the large, empty intersection.
“Woo!” I cheered, laughing with delight. “Come on, try it,” I said to Daniel, offering my lit lighter.
He carefully held out one of his Molotovs and pulled away timidly as the rag caught fire. He readied himself, smiled and hurled it.
“Fuck you, Spiffo!” He yelled as he did.
Daniel, as it turned out, didn't have the best throwing arm, and his Molotov landed a few feet in front of the doorway to the old-world fast food chain.
“Dude,” I said, giggling, which made Daniel look away from me, embarrassed.
I picked up my second Molotov, lit it and cocked my arm back.
“This is for discontinuing the Fluffyfoot Ribs!” I yelled as I hurled my second Molotov, laughing hysterically as it landed on the roof.
Daniel held his second Molotov towards me. I lit it, and he walked a few paces closer to the burning building. He said nothing this time and hurled it at the door, which shattered the glass and added to the flaming interior.
“Woo! Fuck yeah!” I cheered, clapping.
I jogged over to the RV, opened the driver door and leaned in. I grabbed the first tape my hand could find and looked at it. “Mel's”, it read simply. I smiled, put it in the tape deck, turned the ignition on and cranked the volume as high as possible. The opening notes to Heroes started to play and put a big beaming smile on my face. I walked back to Daniel and the fire pit. David Bowie began to sing, and I half drunkenly danced as the Spiffo Burger burnt down.
“Can you smell that?” Daniel asked, sitting by the fire and staring at the conflagration we'd caused.
“Yeah, it's fry oil. Smells like french fries, huh?” I explained.
I finished a fifth beer and smashed the bottle on the ground. I spun around, dancing to the music, before I tripped and almost fell over. Daniel and I both laughed. I sat down next to him and lit a cigarette. We let our smiles subside, and the moment passed as the sun set and the building continued to burn.
“Do you think everyone is gone?” Daniel asked shyly.
“No, just most of us,” I sighed. “But I found you, didn't I?” I said cheerily, nudging his shoulder with mine.
When I looked at him, my words didn't seem to comfort him. He looked into the fire and got lost in its licking and crackling. I stood up to get another beer but stopped and looked down at him.
“Hey, Daniel, I'm gonna make you a pact,” I stated.
He turned to look up at me with puppy dog eyes.
“You and I are gonna find some more people, living people. I promise. And we'll do it together,” I said, offering my hand.
Daniel took my hand gently; his soft hands felt like they didn't have a single callous. I grasped it firmly and shook it once with a smile. Daniel smiled hopefully back at me, and we celebrated while Spiffo's burnt down in front of us.

2024.05.23 06:19 MsCndyKane Just saw this!

Just saw this!
Southern California.
I just saw this in the sky over my house. I didn’t have my glasses on so I couldn’t see it clearly.
From what I could tell it was white and more of a square shape. There were no lights and it was completely silent. (I know it looks like a light in the video. Not sure if you can enhance it) It glided across the sky. It was about helicopter flying range.
The shorter video had my flash on. The longer one was without flash.

2024.05.23 06:08 adorabletapeworm Orion Pest Control: The Mechanic Gave Me A Ride

Previous case
The infected deer are starting to become a real problem. That being said, as the title suggests, the worms are the least of my worries.
(If you're not familiar with what Orion Pest Control's services are, it may help to start here.)
On my drive home a few nights ago, I saw the reflection of eyes in the distance. As I slowed down, I discovered a buck standing in the middle of the road, head bent over gray fur.
It was eating an opossum. Or, more accurately, the worms puppeteering it were coiling around the opossum, their mouths leaving huge holes in the poor animal's fur as they dragged it between the deer's open jaws.
Like the infected doe I'd encountered before, the buck’s stomach was pulsating as the worms moved. Its fur was unruly, the white patch over its throat stained with layers of dried blood.
My stomach fluttered in disgust at the way the parasites protruded from its mouth. God, those worms… Steeling myself, I snatched my toolbelt off of the passenger seat along with the shotgun and went out to take care of it. Unfortunately, I only had regular shells that time. After the incident at the farm, I hadn't had the time to restock on salt shells. They would've made this process much faster and easier.
I just had to shoot it in the head, then pour salt on each worm afterwards. Same as before. No problem, right?
The sound that the worms made as they devoured the opossum made my skin crawl. The sliminess of their skin as they slithered around each other combined with the wet tearing of flesh and fur. Whatever you're imagining, I assure you that the noise was far more nauseating in real life.
Before the worms or their host had a chance to notice me, I took aim and pulled the trigger. The side of the buck's head exploded. It let out a deep, guttural groan as the worms dropped from around the trapped rodent.
The buck then lowered its antlers at me. Fuckfuckfuck! I sprinted for my car as it charged me, the worms flopping around as they were dragged across the road by their host. I got out of the way just as the buck's antlers pierced my G6's hood. It shook its head violently, my little car shaking along with it as it tried to get its antlers free.
Why was it so much more aggressive than the doe? Had it been infected longer?
Just as I raised the shotgun again, I felt something brush against my foot. I was so glad that nobody was around to see me yelp like a coyote as I expertly flailed away from the worm that had taste-tested my boot.
There was an ear-splitting, metallic groan as the buck got its antlers free. I stepped away from the worms as I fired again. The buck fell to the side, causing the worms to lurch to the ground like cut ropes. Heroically, I backed away from them even more as they began to convulse, fumbling with shaking hands to get the salt out of my toolbelt.
The area around me became much brighter as another vehicle made its way down the road. I got off to the side to lower the chances of getting hit, then otherwise ignored it as I finished the job by seasoning the parasites, grimacing as they writhed against their salty demise.
From behind me, I heard the oncoming vehicle start to slow down. I had just finished salting the final worm when the driver completely slowed to a stop. Glaring against the headlights, dread pooled in my stomach as I recognized the old, boxy blue Ford pickup. I'd seen it parked at the mechanic's shop every time I've had to go over there.
What was he doing here?
Coincidences don't exist in this line of work. I hadn't seen the mechanic since that day he'd turned me into a dog. I'd went out of my way to try to avoid him, which in hindsight, I probably could've been more subtle about.
It occurred to me to run. A frightened, primal impulse. But if I'm right about what the mechanic is, that'd be a horrible idea. They take cruel delight in hunting their prey down. Not knowing what else to do as my heart raced, I made sure that the buck and the worms were dead, shooting the infected animal in the head one last time. It didn't move. Neither did the worms.
The truck's door creaked open, then slammed shut. And with the sound of his boots on the gravel, I said a quick prayer, hoping that whatever god heard me would be a merciful one.
The mechanic grimaced at the dead worms, “Hoo, those things are nasty.”
All I could think of to say in my state was, “…Yeah.”
Brilliant, right?
He clicked his tongue, then walked over to my G6, shaking his head. “It sure did a number on this.”
For the first time, I got to see the extent of the damage that the buck had done to my poor little car. The hood was crumpled and riddled with several small holes. I had left it running, but after the attack, the engine had gone quiet. My dread worsened as I noticed that some sort of fluid was pooling beneath the front of the car.
The mechanic popped the hood, absent-mindedly nudging a dead worm out of the way with his heel as he examined my suffering car.
“Yeah, that's the fuckin’ radiator.” The mechanic commented. “This thing ain't going anywhere.”
You've gotta be kidding me.
I'm not a car person. I didn't know if he was messing with me or not. I stammered, “Are… are you serious?”
He closed my hood, “You see me laughing, puppydog?”
Prick.
“Please don't call me that.” I said, keeping my voice as even as possible.
He snickered, “What would you like me to call you, then?”
I replied, “Let's go back to ‘stranger.’”
He pursed his lips, “But we're really not strangers anymore, now, are we?”
I didn't like that he'd taken enough of an interest in me to want to use something other than a generic nickname for me. I didn't trust this. Not one bit.
The mechanic patted the G6's hood noisily before stepping over a worm to stand in front of me, “Well, I can tow this thing to the shop, then start workin’ on it in the morning. In the meantime, why don't you let me give you a lift?”
Oh, FUCK no.
“Thanks, but I have people I can call.” I replied, eyes on his chest to avoid his gaze.
He chuckled, “You really don't like accepting help when it's offered, do you?”
That was a warning. Don't push it.
Doing everything in my power to keep my voice calm, I asked, “Will you expect something in return?”
With a grin, he replied, “Just the pleasure of your company.”
I don't like this.
As much as I would've preferred to take my chances walking home and dealing with literally any other atypical animal that could be prowling the night, I was too afraid to wear the mechanic's patience any thinner.
He either read my mind or my thoughts showed on my face because he then added with a smirk, “You can bring your gun, if that'll make you feel safer.”
Unable to shake the feeling that I was going to the gallows, I reluctantly climbed into the passenger seat of his truck, flipping the safety switch on the shotgun before setting it on the floor against my leg.
The interior smelled pleasantly of black cherries. I'd expected the stench of motor oil. He wordlessly nativated the truck in front of my broken down car, then jumped back out again to hook everything up.
While he was busy with that, I quickly texted Victor and Reyna, ‘broke down. mechanic found me. taking me somewhere. not sure where yet.’
For good measure, I also shared my location with them. Afterwards, I jammed my phone back into my pocket, then peered into the side mirror to watch the mechanic. He was pulling on the chains he'd attached to my G6, testing their tightness. He looked like he was almost done.
My phone buzzed, but I didn't dare take it out again.
The mechanic climbed back into the driver's seat with a sigh. As the old pickup started down the road, my unease kept building. I felt like I shouldn't move or breathe too much, for some strange reason. This might sound dramatic, but I would've felt safer being trapped in a cage with a hungry lion. At least a lion would just shred me and be done with it.
I reminded myself that I was still wearing my toolbelt. He'd let me take the shotgun. I didn't know how effective salt, shells, or a silver blade would be against him, but it was slightly reassuring to know that I wasn't completely defenseless. Just slightly. The fact that he'd let me keep all of it told me that he didn't consider me a threat to him, even while armed.
The mechanic glanced at me, “I don't know about you, but I'm starving. I was on my way to Dillon's when I found you.”
Dillon's is an old 50's style diner that’s about a half hour walk away from my apartment. It's cheap, greasy, and gets the job done, especially when you're hungover.
The mechanic looked and sounded deceptively friendly as he spoke again, “Though, I am glad that we ran into each other! There's something that I've been wanting to discuss with you.”
That couldn't be good. I stared through the windshield, only looking over at him occasionally to avoid any possibility of him catching my eye.
The mechanic continued, “You remember when I told you the other night that you impressed me? I meant that. And humans don't normally impress me much, so… make of that what you will. However, you also tried to get smart with me and that is the shit I hate. You can be as polite as you want, but insolence is insolence, no matter how much you try to sugarcoat it.”
Even though his tone remained light, the nervous pit in my stomach grew into a gaping chasm. Was he still angry? And if he was, what did that mean for me?
The mechanic side-eyed me briefly as if he expected me to say something.
My phone buzzed in my pocket again. One of my coworkers tried to call me.
Another thing yinz need to know about dealing with the Neighbors: never use the words ‘I'm sorry,’ the reason being that an apology is an admission of a debt to them. If you have to atone for a transgression (and it is highly recommended that you do so), your phrasing matters.
I hoped that humbling myself would appease him, “My actions were a waste of your time and I absolutely regret them. It won't happen again.’
The mechanic snickered, “See, that's just it. You're so… fuck, what's the word I'm looking for? I heard it just the other day and it reminded me of you. Oh, right! Unctuous. You ever hear that word before?”
I told him I hadn't.
“It means someone who's insincerely polite. They tell you what you want to hear just to get what they want. Sound familiar, pup?”
He'd never been this ruthless in our interactions before. I needed to be careful.
Feeling my mouth get dry from impending panic, I shook my head, “That's not it. I just try to watch what I say. I don't mean for it to come off as disingenuous.”
Throughout this whole conversation, his smile stayed in place. He was enjoying making me squirm. As much as it killed me to give him that satisfaction, I couldn't hide it: even without that banjo around, I was terrified of him.
He replied, “You see why I'm glad we ran into each other? This is something that's been on my mind for a bit. Coulda gotten it outta the way a whole lot sooner, if you hadn't been hiding from me.”
I knew better than to insist that I wasn't avoiding him, especially since I was already on dangerously thin ice. And we were still far enough away from town that if he were to decide to pull over right then and there, no one would notice what happened to me until it was too late.
Swallowing back my nervousness, I asked, “What happens now?”
“That whole nasty business two weeks ago didn't need to happen. All you had to do was find your boss, which you already wanted to do anyway. But instead, you decided to be a smartass. From now on, don't get smart with me and just do your job. That ain't asking for much, is it?”
Trying to get more saliva in my dry mouth to swallow again, I hurriedly nodded, “No, it's not. I’ll do better.”
“Glad we're understandin’ each other, pup.”
Despite the mechanic's relaxed demeanor, I still didn't feel safe in that truck. We were getting closer to town. My phone didn't stop vibrating. I just hoped that he was taking me to where he said we were going.
There is a bit of conflict in our records as to whether or not the Neighbors can lie. Some sources state that they can only speak the truth, others say that they are able to be just as dishonest as humans. Either way, it's best to operate under the assumption that their intentions are to manipulate.
The mechanic then cheerily asked, “Now that we got that unpleasantness out of the way, I gotta know, how'd you get so good with a gun? I've seen ol’ blue eyes shoot, and that man can't hit the broad side of a barn, so I know he ain't the one that taught ya.”
Military records are public. If he learned even something as miniscule as my last name, it wouldn't be hard to identify me or my mom from there. The Neighbors have been known to seek out the family members of those who've slighted them. Entire bloodlines have been destroyed in this manner. I've seen it happen before, but that's a story for another time.
I can't stress this enough: never let a Neighbor learn your name.
I struggled to find a balance between being vague enough to protect myself, but detailed enough to satisfy him, “I wanted to learn how to defend myself when I was younger, so I found some good teachers.”
I must've missed the mark because the mechanic shook his head and chuckled, “You're doing it again. That annoying indirect shit. Why don't you try giving me a real answer, for once?”
Feeling my heart flutter, I muttered, “Armed forces.”
That was still vague. I didn't specify which of the armed forces. He could deduce when I served based on my age, but even then, that was still thousands of soldiers to sort through. Hopefully, that would be enough to protect us.
“Thank you for your service.” He said, his tone slightly mocking.
He could taunt me as much as he wanted. At least he accepted that answer. I just hoped that I wouldn't face any repercussions for being too vague earlier.
More streetlights were appearing. We were in town, getting closer to Dillon's. Assuming that he had been telling the truth about our destination.
This was the longest drive of my life. If the truck hadn't been going so fast, I would've been tempted to tuck and roll. And again… if the mechanic is what I think he is, he'd probably love it if I gave him the opportunity to chase me.
I had to know for sure, though. Just so that I knew how to properly deal with him.
Doing my best to sound meek (not hard, in the moment), I tried to word my question carefully, “Are you a Wild Huntsman?”
Once again, not taking the risk of typing or saying the ‘S’ word, especially since I haven't heard from that one person that commented that term on my last post.
Speaking of… are you still alive and in one piece, u/Holiday-Space?
The mechanic laughed, “Too afraid to say it, huh? Come on, I dare you!”
“No thanks.”
One of you is bad enough. Don't need any of your hunting buddies to show up.
The mechanic shook his head at me as he snickered, “Coward.”
Up ahead was Dillon's old purple neon sign. To my relief, the mechanic pulled into the parking lot. With it being so late, there were only two vehicles there besides the mechanic's truck (not including my comatose G6.)
Anxious to get out of there, I reached for the handle only for the door to swing open before I could grab it. The mechanic was holding the door open for me. I hadn't even heard the driver's side open.
See why I didn't try to run from him?
It took a lot of effort to sound sincere as I said, “What a gentleman.”
He nodded towards Dillon's, “After you.”
Even though the idea of having to spend more quality time with the mechanic made me want to crawl out of my own skin, I felt marginally safer in public. He wouldn't risk exposing himself when he has a shop to run. At least, I didn't think he would.
The girl that seated us blushed the moment she saw him. For her sake, I hope he doesn't ever decide to take advantage of her crush.
I was so keyed up that food was the last thing on my mind. It took our poor, flustered waitress asking me twice before I could order only a glass of water.
After she walked away, the mechanic leaned forward, forearms resting on the table as he said in a low voice, “You know, you don't have to act like a hostage, right?”
Wasn't I though? He did take me there against my will, after all.
I whispered, “Why am I here? What else do you want?”
“I already told you. I want your company. We're just talking. That's it.”
If that was true, then why go through the effort of intimidating me? Granted, he didn't have to do much. My mind raced as I tried to remember anything helpful that the boss could've told me. I recalled then that Victor had said that the mechanic couldn't do anything to him while he was still alive. There must be some sort of condition that has to be met.
The waitress scurried over with the mechanic's coffee and my water, turning an even deeper shade of red when the mechanic flashed an admittedly charming smile at her. When her eyes met mine, she looked somewhat embarrassed. It occurred to me then that to someone on the outside of all of this atypical nonsense, it probably looked like I was his extremely anxious and somewhat disheveled date.
Christ. Just kill me.
Now that I had humiliation to add on top of all of the other negative emotions I was experiencing, I sipped at the metallic-tasting ice water, grateful to give my parched tongue some relief.
As the mechanic added at least ten sugar packets to his coffee, he said, “Try to relax a little, alright? If I'd wanted to hurt you, I coulda taken care of that out on the road.”
Was that supposed to be reassuring?
After a deep breath, trying to lessen my nerves, I uttered, “You… want a little coffee with your sugar?”
He snorted, “Judge me all you want. It's like a drinkable candy bar.”
I stared down at my paper placemat that doubled as a menu. The last thing I wanted was to meet his gaze. It was harder to avoid it when seated together in a small booth. In retrospect, I think that's what he was counting on.
He'd said something alarming about Victor that made me reflexively glance up in shock, aiming to just look at his chest again. I don't even remember what he'd said.
The phone ringing in the kitchen… Mom kneeling down to hug me, making my shoulder wet… My father glaring at me through bullet proof glass…
I shook my head, blinking. What? Fingertips on my chin, leaning in as if to kiss me. The mechanic's eyes are hazel.
Our garage spray painted ‘MURDERER’... A fist pummeling my nose in the school hallway… My black kitten Maisie trotting towards me… That recruiter’s shit eating grin… Sargent Wilcox screaming, ‘Come on, you useless fucks!’... Yelling for a medic as I held my hands over Oliver's bleeding stomach…
Wait… what happened? A warm, gloved hand over my eyes. My cheeks were wet. When did I start crying? As I came to my senses, I recognized Reyna’s perfume.
The mechanic's voice made me stiffen. It's tone was sultry, with a menacing edge to it, “And who might you be?”
“No one.” She replied hurriedly, her voice bearing a slight quiver. She then whispered to me, “Let's go.”
Even though I couldn't see him, I could tell the mechanic was smiling as he told us that he'd see us later.
Due to our height difference, (I'm 6'1 while Reyna meets the requirements for the Lollipop Guild) her hand uncovered my face naturally as I stood up to leave. I refused to look in the mechanic's general direction. We rushed out. I could tell he was watching to see which car we'd go into. Fortunately, Reyna had the foresight to park behind the building.
I should also mention that Reyna had disguised herself. She wore red heart-shaped sunglasses and a scarf over her head, like a starlet from the golden age of Hollywood. She even wore platforms to try to appear taller. While it wasn't very discreet, it would hopefully keep the mechanic from recognizing her. Once we got to her Monte Carlo and peeled out, she ripped the sunglasses off.
Glancing into the rearview mirror for the what felt like the eighth time as Dillon's faded away behind us, Reyna frantically asked, “What did he do to you? I walked in and… you were just…”
He'd flipped through my mind like the pages of a book. I told her as much. She asked me if I was okay. I wasn't sure.
“We’re going to my place.” She informed me, checking the mirror again. “Vic and I agreed it's probably safest since the mechanic knows the least about me. And I'd love to keep it that way.”
I nodded, still unreeling from having my memories dug into, “Sounds good.”
Further on down the road, she noticeably stiffened when she saw a pair of headlights come up behind us. I reminded her that he didn't know what her car looked like. She didn't speed up, keeping the car at the speed limit to not draw attention to ourselves.
The headlights got closer. Turns out, it was just some impatient idiot with a lifted Dodge Ram truck. We both let out groans of relief when the ugly, oversized vehicle passed us.
“I never thought I'd actually be glad to see a pavement princess.” Reyna commented with a nervous laugh.
She then suddenly asked, “Is the mechanic an incubus?”
Feeling the beginnings of a headache behind my left eye, I answered, “I wish. That'd be a lot simpler.”
“Ah, okay. Wonderful. Lovely. And uh, don't worry about answering everything I say. I'm just kinda talking because I don't know what else to do, so if you want to ignore me, feel free.”
I ended up calling Victor, putting him on loudspeaker so that Reyna could hear.
He answered on the first ring, “What happened? Are you alright?”
I caught him up on everything. After I was done, he sighed, “Okay. If you don't mind me asking, when he got into your head, what did he see?”
“My sperm donor getting arrested, me getting beaten up in middle school, bootcamp, and a buddy dying after an ambush in Afghanistan.”
“Was your name used in any of those memories?”
“No.”
“Okay. That's good at least. I'm sorry you were forced to relive all of that.”
I didn't know what to say. Thankfully, Victor saved me from having to respond by continuing, “I was afraid of this. When a Hunter takes an interest in someone, especially someone that they can't take right away, they start off with trying to break the target down. Using fear and intimidation to make the person feel isolated, sometimes even driving them insane. The mechanic is trying to start that process with you.”
What he was saying checked out with everything that I'd researched about The Hunt. They are said to be attracted to bereavement, often pursuing those who've experienced a great loss or heartbreak. They interpret it as weakness. The more vulnerable their victim is, the easier it is for The Hunt to devour them. That explained why the mechanic had gravitated towards some of the most traumatic experiences of my life.
I'd read somewhere that they find brave, good-natured people especially appetizing, even though they're the hardest for The Hunt to take. By being unable to cry out when I was transformed, I think I’d unintentionally convinced the mechanic that I was that type of person. And it made him hungry.
Victor bitterly informed us, “He's not going to chase you tonight. He has your gun and your car. He knows you’ll go to him.”
Slowly, the fear became replaced with anger. And spite. The mechanic could disarm me and use my worst moments against me, but I resolved then that I wouldn't let that fucker intimidate me. I wouldn't give him what he wanted.
If he wanted to think I was something special, I'd give him something fucking special.
“Vic, can you get her things so that she doesn't have to deal with him?” Reyna asked.
Before he could answer, I shook my head, “No. I don't want the mechanic to think that I'm afraid. I mean… I am but he doesn't need to know that.”
Victor warned, “By confronting him, you could make the hunt more thrilling for him. That might encourage him to be more aggressive towards you.”
I shrugged, “I'm screwed either way. At least this way, I'm screwed on my own terms.”
For the first time in a long time, Victor sounded like he might've been smiling. I haven't seen him smile since before he showed up with that bandana covering his slit throat. “We can start by finding a hagstone. That's easier said than done… but, something's telling me that there'll be one at Beaver Run. Check there.”
According to our records, draugr have a limited ability to see the future. Maybe that ‘strange feeling’ was actually a premonition. It certainly wouldn't hurt to check.
“Tomorrow morning, while the mechanic is at his shop, it's hagstone time.” I announced.
“I'll help.” Reyna offered, but then quickly added. “Unless you need me to cover for her tomorrow, Vic.”
“If you wouldn't mind doing a half-day, that'd be best.”
“Okay, can do!”
Victor wished us luck, then hung up.
Forgive me, but I'm going to go off on a brief tangent: Reyna has a pet skunk. Her name is Fireball. I'm mentioning this because that little skunk was basically free therapy after the night I'd had. And in all my days of having to dig the little guys out from under people's houses, I never really had a chance to appreciate how cute they are.
“She can't spray.” Reyna assured me when the little critter trotted over to sniff me. For those that aren't aware, skunks are typically quiet, but when they do vocalize, they sound like weed whackers.
Reyna stared down at Fireball, “What are you ‘meeping’ at?”
Fireball stomped at her, then jumped back. In the wild, they do this when they're trying to intimidate predators, so if you encounter a skunk and they do this, it's best to back off. However, in Fireball's case, they might also stomp when they're feeling sassy.
Reyna put her hands up in an annoyed gesture, “What's with the attitude?”
The skunk stomped again. Reyna huffed, “Jeez, you act like you're starving to death. You still have food in your bowl, idiot! Just because you can see a little bit of the bottom doesn’t mean it's empty!”
After we quadruple-checked to make sure that every entrance into Reyna’s apartment was salter, I settled down on the couch to get some sleep. At one point in the night, Fireball ended up curled up in my lap. That healed me.
The search for a hagstone wasn't going to be an easy one. They're stones with holes in the middle, normally found near bodies of water. In the old tales, these stones are valuable tools against the Neighbors for a variety of reasons, one of them being they can protect against curses and ward off evil. They also have been said to allow humans to see things that would normally be hidden to us when looking through the middle of the stone.
In other words, if our records were accurate, it was the key to leveling the playing field when it came to the mechanic.
I was in the river not long after the sun rose. Even though the water was cold this early in the summer, my spite kept me warm. I dug through the riverbed for hours until I came across a white stone with a large hole in its lumpy center.
Good to know that Victor's newfound draugr intuition was accurate.
I have the hagstone hanging on a chain around my neck, tucked under my shirt. I wasn't sure what effect the hagstone would have on the mechanic. At the very least, maybe I could see what he actually looked like.
Later that afternoon, Victor called to tell me that my car was done. Moment of truth. Even with the hagstone, I wasn't looking forward to being in close quarters with the mechanic again. But I reminded myself that I wasn't going to let that sadistic fuck frighten me into hiding again. No more avoiding him.
The mechanic greeted me, boyish grin in place, “Long time no see, pup!”
Feeling the weight of the hagstone as a comforting weight around my neck, I said, “I was told that my car is done. Think I left my shotgun in your truck, as well.”
“You did. You left in such a hurry. Probably had a lot on your mind, I imagine.”
Fuck you.
He set my keys on the counter, along with my shotgun, then leaned forward to rest on his forearms, “Come and get ‘em.”
I didn't know if the hagstone would keep him out of my head and I wasn't about to find out the hard way. He already knew more about me than I was comfortable with. I kept my eyes low.
As I approached the counter, he suddenly stepped back, eyes narrowed. Unfortunately, he didn't lose that grin. That was a shame; I was hoping to wipe it off of his face.
The mechanic let out a short laugh, “I see you came prepared.”
I sounded braver than I felt, “Of course I did. Now, how much for the repairs?”
His smile turned mysterious as he gave me my total. He didn't come closer to the counter while I stood by it; I had to back up for him to be able to run my card. After that was done, he set it on the counter next to my other belongings, leaning against the back of some old clunker he had lined up to work on.
As I hurried to get my things, the mechanic suddenly asked, “You can't tell me that you ain't curious.”
“Curious about what?”
“‘Bout what I really look like.” He smirked, folding his arms across his chest. “Go on. Take a peek.”
As tempting as it was, it wasn't hard to deduce his ulterior motive, “You just want to know where I have the stone hidden.”
He chuckled, “Yeah, that's true. You got me there. But wouldn't you like to know what you're really dealing with?”
“I already do. I don't need to see a monster to know it's there.”
Judging by the way his eyes slitted, he did not care for that comment. I knew I was probably going to regret that later. He already wanted to hunt me for sport. What did it matter if I clapped back at him just one time?
His voice lowered, “When your heart stops, puppydog, you better pray the devil finds you before I do. You'll crave Hell before I'm through with you.”
Hoping that he couldn't see my hands shaking, I grabbed my things and got out without another word. The G6 was working even better than it had before the deer incident.
After that interaction… I think I'm going to look for more hagstones. And I'm going to restock on salt shells.

Advice on the Best Restaurant Countertops
The countertop chosen for a restaurant directly affects the functionality and efficiency of the space. There are many countertops to use, each of them made of different materials, including solid surface, granite, marble, stainless steel, quartz, concrete, wood, etc.
In this article, we will take a look at the most common materials used to make restaurant countertops and their impact on workflow. Alongside this, we will discuss salient matters like the major types of commercial countertops for restaurants, factors to consider when choosing the right countertop, and so many more.

What are Restaurant Countertops?

Restaurant countertops are basically meant for serving food and drinks. However, they also function as ice stations, cash counters, and food or drinks stores. Additionally, they serve as a division between the cooking area and eating area, allowing customers to receive their orders from the kitchen easily.
Not only are they serving counters, but they also help maximize seating space. Literarily, restaurant countertops are the focal point of any restaurant.

4 Types of Commercial Countertops for Restaurants

Commercial countertops used at restaurants can be broadly classified into four categories, which are bar countertops, food counter displays, cashier counters, and kitchen counters. They are discussed below:

Bar Countertops

These countertops are often placed just outside the kitchen and are used to serve food and drinks to individuals sitting on the opposite side of the counter or to waiters who distribute the food and drinks to diners seated in the restaurant seating area.
They are constructed to be durable, easy to clean, and resistant to stains, spills, and scratches that can be caused by staff while serving or by customers.

Food Counter Displays

These restaurant counters are commonly found in patisseries, cafes, bakeries, and coffee shops. They are made with glass or plexiglass materials that can be seen through, allowing the restaurant to showcase the food they offer, such as cakes, desserts, sandwiches, etc.
They are constructed to be visually appealing and hygienic, allowing customers to view the displayed food while maintaining safety standards. The food counter displays may also include features like refrigerators or heating appliances to keep the food fresh and at the appropriate temperature.

Cashier Counters

These commercial bar tops are where transactions take place. Sometimes a booth can be designed for the cashier to stay while he receives payment through the counter. Other times, the cashier stays directly opposite the counter.
They are constructed to be sturdy, secure, and functional to handle cash registers, POS systems, and other accounting equipment. The cashier counters are designed with features like adequate storage space, accessibility for staff, and lockable drawers or compartments for security purposes.

Kitchen Counters

These commercial countertops are the workhorses of any restaurant kitchen. They are helpful for food preparation and storing cooking appliances and ingredients. Kitchen countertops are designed to withstand heavy-duty use and meet specific health and safety regulations, such as the Food and Drug Administration.
Also, they are constructed to be highly durable, heat-resistant, and very easy to clean. Ample space should be available for free and smooth cooking.

7 Materials of Restaurant Counters

There are several materials that can be used for making restaurant countertops. But shortlisted below are the 7 most popular materials, their features, pros, and cons.

Solid Surface

Solid surface is a commercial bar counter material that’s fully engineered and composed of a mixture of resins like acrylic, polyester, and stone-derived filler. It’s similar to granite but offers more versatility. Solid surface countertops are high-end customized products and the target customers are commercial users. They are non-porous and are easy to clean and repair.
Pros
Solid surfaces are more customizable
  • There are more colors and patterns to choose from
  • The seams are easy to hide during installation
  • They are resistant to most corrosive acids and don’t require sealants
  • The perfect option for restaurants seeking a clean, uniform design

Cons
  • Solid surfaces are quite expensive
  • Extreme heat can cause damage to the surface
  • The engineered designs mean their appearance and character won’t be natural as other materials like quartz and concrete

Granite

This is a natural stone material that isn’t just used commercially for restaurant counters, but also largely used by homeowners. It begins as a rock compressed for millions of years, in which various minerals merge together. This results in the white and gray swirling that it is popularly known for. Granite can be customized to several polished and textured finishes.
Pros
  • Strong and recyclable, making it a durable and eco-friendly option
  • High valuation even after years of usage
  • Easy to clean and highly resistant to heat, stains, and scratches
  • Contributes to the luxurious and earthy visuals of the restaurant
Cons
  • Granite is very heavy and requires a strong support system
  • The material is quite expensive
  • Requires routine maintenance, such as frequent sealing to prevent moisture and bacteria from seeping into the material pores
  • Once installed, the style and color of the countertop cannot be changed

Marble

This material used in making bar counters for restaurants begins as limestone. But after being exposed to high levels of pressure and heat, it is shaped and molded. Impurities that interfere with the process are easily recognizable as they combine to form thin veins and bands of colors.
Pros
  • Marble offers a stylish and elegant appearance that complements the design of any space
  • It’s highly resistant to heat, making it suitable for temperature-sensitive areas like bakeries
  • Comes in various natural colors and engineered designs
Cons
  • Marble is susceptible to moisture and stains, particularly alcohol and acids
  • It’s a soft stone that tends to chip and scratch
  • Requires high maintenance and frequent sealing

Stainless Steel

This is one of the notable non-porous countertop materials with unparalleled durability and resistance to bacteria, hence why it is a classic choice in the food service industry. Stainless steel can be polished to shine and luster.
Pros
  • Stainless steel is easy to sanitize and clean
  • The material is sustainable and ideal for an eco-friendly commercial bar counter
  • Perfect for bar countertops that require heat-resistant work surfaces without using sealants
Cons
  • Stainless steel leaves little room for creativity, limiting the chances of complementary design with the restaurant décor
  • Most stainless steel easily attract smudge, dust, and fingerprints, hence frequent cleaning is needed
  • Because of the material’s density, the countertops cause noise pollution while working
  • The material is susceptible to dents and scratches, which requires professional restoration

Quartz

Quartz restaurant countertops are made from quartz resin and pigment, which sometimes have coarsely ground stone inside for a flecked appearance. Others without the coarsely ground stone have a more uniform design. Quartz is a great material used in making a hygienic bar counter for restaurants.
Pros
  • Looks great and has an endless selection of colors and patterns to choose from
  • Durable and non-porous, so it’s easy to clean and requires no sealing
  • High resistance to stains and cracks, which makes it a long-lasting investment
Cons
  • Not best for people seeking a unique, uniform appearance
  • Can be expensive depending on the size and design
  • Very heavy, so there is a need for a strong support system
  • Not good at resisting heat when compared with other materials like granite and stainless steel

Concrete

Concrete countertops are made using mortar and pigment, which are then sealed to form a non-porous surface. They can be molded into various shapes and visually appealing in-lays can be included for enhanced design. While the concrete was predominantly used in industrial designs, the material is becoming popularly used in the food industry because of its ability to blend with different styles.
Pros
  • Suitable for a stain and heat-resistant work surface
  • Best for people seeking a versatile option that can adapt to their space
  • Concrete countertops can be used both indoors and outdoor
Cons
  • Very heavy, so an adequate support system is needed
  • Require frequent sealing to prevent stains and maintain their non-porous structure
  • Tend to form small cracks over time

Wood

This is one of the best kitchen countertop materials that offer a warm and inviting ambiance. Wood commercial bar tops are available in various colors and grains, offering a perfect fit for any space. They can be made in two styles – edge grain and end grain. Edge grains are parallel to one another, while end grains are usually in many shades of wood and they form a checkerboard pattern.
Pros
Visually enticing and offer great appeal to the restaurant space
  • When sealed properly, wood countertops are easy to clean and resistant to bacteria
  • They are biodegradable
Cons
  • Wood swells and contracts when it absorbs moisture, making the countertop to look unattractive and imbalance
  • The countertops must be sealed and sanded frequently for guaranteed protection from moisture, germs, and to retain the appealing appearance

Factors to Consider When Choosing the Right Countertops

Countertops are a major investment in the restaurant business. When chosen correctly, they will last for years and contribute to the performance of the business. Whether furnishing a new restaurant or renovating, these are the factors to consider when choosing restaurant counters:

Durability

This refers to the countertop’s ability to withstand the daily rigors associated with their use, such as scratches, stains, spills, dents, rusts, heat, corrosion, and moisture. Consider the activities that will be done on the counter and choose wisely. For example, if a lot of cutting or heat-related projects will be done, choose a surface that can withstand these harsh conditions.
For countertops used in commercial applications and high-traffic areas, select those made with extremely strong materials like solid surfaces, granite, stainless steel, and quartz that can stand against daily wear and tear.

Maintenance

Some homeowners and business operators prefer bar countertops that require low maintenance, so they don’t have to sacrifice many hours of the day to clean them. Low-maintenance countertops are also important so that workday operations won’t be interrupted when it’s time for repair or resealing.
On the other hand, some homeowners and business operators don’t pay much attention to maintenance. Rather, they are more focused on the stability and style that come with the countertops even though they require higher maintenance.

Cost

When considering the cost, don’t focus on the initial price of the commercial bar tops. Evaluate the ongoing care and maintenance costs. Also, put some money aside for miscellaneous, which will serve as a cost for repairs, resurfacing, and resealing. Know that some countertops require specific care products with instructions, and some others may be prone to damage. All these factors should be considered before collating the budget.
Additionally, the budget allocated for different restaurants will be different depending on the space, concept, and overall design. And the counter’s cost varies since they are made of different materials and features that may increase the cost.

Style

Consider the overall theme, décor, and branding of the restaurant. Different materials offer varying styles, such as sleek and modern looks or rustic and traditional looks. For instance, stainless steel restaurant counters can offer a contemporary and professional look, while granite offers a flashy design and a touch of elegance. So, it’s crucial to choose countertops that match the restaurant design scheme.
Style and appearance go hand-in-hand to influence how diners perceive restaurants. The bar countertops should look clean and reflect the uniqueness of the establishment. Note that some counter materials like wood change their looks as they age. However, this can be fixed by frequently resurfacing and resealing them to look new.

Heat Resistance

In restaurants, countertops will surely come in contact with hot pans, pots, or cooking appliances. Therefore, they need to be resistant to heat if they must last long and function optimally. Check for a commercial bar counter made with heat-resistant materials like solid surface, granite, or stainless steel that are known for their capability to withstand high temperatures without warping or discoloration.
On the other hand, a material like quartz is quite good at resisting heat, but it is incomparable to other materials. There are some levels of high temperatures where quartz countertops will fail.

Essential Elements of Bar or Food Service Counters

While choosing the best counter for a restaurant, don’t just focus on the type of material or the durability, maintenance, cost, style, or heat resistance. Check for the other sections included, such as storage cabinets, waste disposal, display shelves of barware, and other essential fit-outs.

Storage Cabinets

Storage cabinets are essential for properly storing food and drinks, as well as appliances that are used in the restaurant. Different types of food and drinks have a set of needs. For example, beers and cold drinks need to be kept in the refrigerator, as they are best served cold. While wine needs to be kept in a warm temperate like counter cabinets.
The size and number of cabinets the counter must have depend on the quantity of beverage that needs to be stored for quick access. Also, how the cabinets are arranged also matters if determining how easy the drinks will be easy to access.

Waste Disposal

Another essential element of bar or food service counters is waste disposal, which needs to be easily accessible to maintain cleanliness. The size and location of the waste storage should be made judging from the seating pattern and capacity of the restaurant.
For improved functionality, the countertop can be constructed to have waste holes. This ensures that scraps are easily discarded into the holes for efficient waste disposal, which helps staff avoid walking all the way to the trash cans at regular intervals. And waste bins should be placed at every corner of the building so that customers can easily dispose of scraps.

Display Shelves of Barware

One of the most intriguing and captivating components of a bar is the display shelves, especially if they are made with transparent glasses with an inner light to showcase the content of the shelves. It is best they are attached to the restaurant counters to create visual appeal to customers and help them make a quick decision on their order.
On the other hand, commercial bar counter racks that allow glasses to hang upside down can also be considered for efficient wine serving and a clean, industrial look.

Other essential Fit-Outs

Some other elements that can be included in the bar or food service counters are the dishwasher, microwave, fridge, etc. These appliances will help improve the efficiency and performance of staff in serving the customers well.

Other Accessory Options that Perfect Your Countertops

Having talked about the essential elements that perfect countertops, let’s discuss the additional accessory options that can further enhance countertops’ perfection.

Lighting

Countertops with proper lighting are more beautiful and visually appealing to both servers and clients. Also, they create a safe, functional, and comfortable environment, which promotes the image of the restaurant. Installing overhead lights help provide adequate lighting for servers to work, and recessed downlights directly above the countertop center bring out the beauty of the countertop, including the design and pattern of the material.

Bar Sinks

These are low-height sinks that are installed under the commercial bar counter to help servers prepare drinks or wash glassware. They are commonly made from durable, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, and can come with insulated ice chests or racks that provide easy access to bottles needed by bartenders to prepare drinks.

Cabinetry Hardware

While good-looking restaurant countertops are always a sight to behold, the hardware that goes into its production is very important to its underlying durability, maintenance, cost, style, and heat resistance. KKR’s restaurant counters are made using only solid surface materials and they remain 100% functional regardless of years of usage and environment.

3 Ways to Design the Perfect Bar Countertop

With so many materials and essential elements available, there is a great chance to customize countertops to be exceptionally stunning. Creating a high aesthetic value commercial bar counter can result in the overall success of the restaurant.

Choose Unique Bar Top Material

The first noticeable part of a bar counter for a restaurant is the top. The material used to make the top goes a long way in affecting the appearance of the counter. While most people automatically think of stone as the best material, there are other options, such as solid surface, granite, marble, stainless steel, etc. The chosen material should blend with the ambiance of the bar.

Determine Appropriate Counter Height

Consider how high the counter will be and how comfortable diners will feel when seating. The counter should be constructed to accommodate various barstool heights and offer an ergonomic workspace for bartenders. Basically, the standard height for bar counters is 40-42 inches i.e., 101-107 cm. However, this can be altered based on specific reasons, such as the average height of the bartenders or the style of barstools used.

Create a Design with Curved Edges

When designing commercial bar tops, there is no limitation on the type of edges to use. Other than using straight lines, the bar tops can be shaped to be curvy to be more eye-catching and unique. The degree of curvature can vary, ranging from subtle curves to more pronounced arcs depending on the desired aesthetics and space available.

How long is an average pocket knife, Handle end to knife point?
I am a woodworker by hobby and have a friend i want to make a display box for some of his pocket knife collection. I have little knowledge in pocket knife collecting and need some help on dimensions for my sketch ups.
pictures are the rough base concept with a generic knife that many of his collection is similar to. each knife will have a magnet holder that comes off the backboard about 1.5 inches, holding the blade so the knives have a suspended look. The case will be 3-4 inches deep with a lockable framed glass lid. Dodecahedron shaped ideally, might need paired down to the second image depending on how big it gets.
My best estimates are 1-1.5 inch diameter and 6-8 inches in length, the smaller length i can get away with the less clunky the display would be. Its looking like 18-20 inch across right now and am thinking thats might be to big for a display.
Would really appreciate some input from you folks on the knife size to design for and what you think of the concept if you have a minute.

DC Next presents:

GREEN LANTERN

Issue Thirty-Six: Aureate Afterglow
Written by UpinthatBuckethead
Edited by AdamantAce, dwright5252, deadislandman1
First Next > Coming in July
It was cold.
Wet.
Dark.
“In brightest day, in blackest night…” the stranded Lantern began, but it was no use. No power charged his ring. The light of the Oan Central Power Battery couldn’t reach him in the inky depths which swallowed him. Besides, he thought to himself, that was a desperate shot in the dark. Was the oath of the Green Lanterns even his anymore?
Guy Gardner sighed, clutched his golden ring. No, he supposed it wasn’t.
Alone, he drifted. He couldn’t tell for how long. Had it been hours? Days? Guy hadn't grown tired or hungry. The signals his body used to regulate its internal clock, on strike. His last memory was with John Stewart. They were together in the Antimatter Universe, trying to return when he’d been… he couldn’t remember. Where was he? How far from home?
The darkness was absolute.
“Well, this bites,” Guy said to himself, utterly lost for action. He and John had only just begun to explore the potential of their new golden rings. With no oath, how was he supposed to charge the thing?

A presence stirred in the void. It made no sound, but Guy felt it nonetheless.
“Who goes there?” He demanded.
Who goes there? His words repeated back at him, reverberating from the black. The voice was deep and resonant. All-encompassing.
“I asked first,” Guy said. “Who are you?”

Momentary silence, but he could still feel the presence pulsating in the background. Then, a litany of titles.
Stalker Among the Stars. Howler in the Dark. The Crawling Mist. Nephren-Ka, the Black Pharaoh.
Followed by a name: Izhoges.
“Black Pharaoh,” Guy repeated. “You’ve been to Earth?”
An Earth.
“Where am I?”
We are nowhere; we are everywhere.
Guy was growing more frustrated with each cryptic answer. “How can we be nowhere?”

No response. Only that rhythmic pulsation.
The gears of his mind were slowly turning. The only ‘nowhere’ Guy could think of was the Bleed. The space between spaces; the energy membrane of the Multiverse. Was that where they were? The Bleed?
“Are we between universes?” Guy asked, hoping for any sort of clarification.
We are everywhere. The voice said again. We are nowhere.
He grunted in frustration. “That’s not possible.”
It is not.
Guy blinked. Did the thing just agree with him?
“Then where are we?” He asked for a third time. Maybe he was making progress. “Uncharted space?”
In me.
In it? The space seemed practically endless. How could he be inside of it? But even as he wondered, he knew it was possible. An entire planet was a Green Lantern, for Christ’s sake. But a new question was forming for Guy. How was he going to escape? Get back home?
You cannot.
The voice responded without input. Guy’s heart dropped. Could this thing read his mind?
Yes.
Great. He had to get out, as fast as he could. There had to be a way out. The voice must have been lying!
Ha ha… Deep laughter bounded across the void, echoing back against itself over and over again. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
The darkness began to twist around him like a shimmering, swirling sea of ink. Wisps poked and prodded, tugging at him. His clothes. His ring.
Guy clenched his fist, and the dark fingers drew back. “Like hell,” he said through gritted teeth as he saw the ring flash with golden light. Where had that come from? It didn’t matter. If he had the power, he was going to use it.
Fist outstretched, light began to pour from the ring’s signet. The energy was like deep yellow fire, flowing out and taking the form of an immense pair of garden shears. They closed on the back of the trail of darkness, snipping the wisp in two, both which dissipated into the void accompanied by an ominous hiss.
Alright, Guy thought. He could cause this wannabe god pain. Maybe he could just about get himself out of this. But how?
He closed his eyes. Imagined Earth. Home. His apartment in Boston. His brother, mother, and father. In his mind’s eye, he could see his on-and-off again boyfriend reading a magazine by the pool. Guy smirked; when he’d be at the gym or a game, he could always count on Davey to be taking it easy.
What are you doing?
Guy was at a Red Sox game! He was in the old plastic seats of the bleachers, grey jersey on his back, a Fenway Frank in one hand and his old high-school baseball mitt in the other. It was the bottom of the ninth, and the Sox were down by one with two on. The count was full. There were two outs. Either way it went, this would be the last pitch of the game.
Stop that.
But how could he? The pitch was thrown. He was on his feet with the rest of the crowd. The park was as silent as he’d ever heard it. The roar, only a dull white noise. Boston’s batter reared back, ready to strike.
No!
Yes! The bat connected, and Guy’s eyes snapped open. To his surprise, he was in the bleacher seats of Fenway Park. He looked down. His power ring rested on his right middle finger, the same place it had always been. Had it done something to get him out? Had it sent him home?
That was when the home-run ball connected with his head, and the lights went out.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
When Guy came to, it was to the dull, monotonous tones of a heart monitor. He opened his eyes, and the brightness of the overhead lights flooded his vision. He squinted and blinked away the fuzzy spots, but before they were clear a thick pair of arms aggressively wrapped themselves around his neck. His eyes bolted open, body swinging into fight-or-flight mode. Guy was defaulting into ‘flight mode’, whole body tensing, when the voice broke through.
“Thank God you’re okay!” cried Davey. He was wearing the same salmon trunks Guy had seen him in at the pool, with a navy blue polo shirt thrown on. His backpack was strewn haphazardly across the small visitor’s table in the hospital room. A copy of Ubik was resting next to the bag, propped open like a tent.
“Of course I’m okay,” Guy said softly, rubbing behind Davey’s shoulders. “You didn’t think a lousy baseball could take out the Guy Gardner, did you?”
“No,” Davey sniffed. “Never.”
“How did you even know I was here?” Guy asked, and pressed the call button on the side of his bed. He had some questions for the doctor, or nurse, whoever would answer.
Davey couldn’t hold back a chuckle. “I’m still your emergency contact, blockhead.”
“Oh, yeah. I guess you are.”
“You really ought to change that,” Davey suggested. “Your mom or dad. Maybe even Mace.”
“To hell with Mace,” Guy grumbled.
Davey was taken aback. “Alright,” he said, hands up, but he didn’t push the topic any further. “Honestly, I don’t mind being your contact. The call was a… pleasant surprise.”
When Guy raised an eyebrow, Davey quickly followed with, “Not you being here, obviously. But I thought you were off-world. It’s nice to see you.”
“It’s nice to see you, too. And between you and me, I thought I was, too. I was with John in the Antimatter Universe, and then…”
John Stewart.” The name was dripping ice when Davey said it. “Your Lantern friend?”
Guy was oblivious. “Yeah, John. I was with him in the Antimatter Universe when…”
“When did you get home, Guy?” Davey interrupted again.
“I’d tell you if you’d let me finish,” Guy muttered angrily. “Well, I don’t know.”
Davey scoffed, but was cut off by a soft knock at the door.
“Come in.”
Can I help you?
Guy’s heart filled with dread. It was like he was in a nightmare, trapped, unable to move as the horror was subjected upon him. The door inched open, and a nurse dressed in all-black scrubs stepped through. You called?
“It’s you,” Guy mouthed, but his vocal chords failed him.
The black-scrubbed nurse stood silently in the doorway. The air shimmered about them, darting and cutting across space like light off of a lenticular poster. In the shimmer, Guy could see two forms at once: one the tall nurse in dark uniform, the other a repulsive being, rotting tendrils given human form. When the nurse grinned, the tentacled being’s vertical maw contorted into inhuman shapes.
Guy’s neck and facial muscles were the only ones unparalyzed. He slowly turned his head, craning it in Davey’s direction. But it was no use. Davey couldn’t see the grotesque being behind the facade of humanity. And when Guy cried out to warn him no sound escaped, his words arrested before utterance.
Davey looked down at Guy with concern. Guy could just about read his mind from that expression. Davey thought he was losing it. But he wasn’t. Was he?
Mr. Gardner?
The Black Pharaoh’s voice was a malady of dissonant noises, the grinding metal of a heavy freight train coming to a stop mixed with a knife scraping against a glass medicine bottle. Guy couldn’t keep his face from wincing, but the rest of his body remained in mutiny.
“What are you doing to him?!” screamed Davey.
No, Guy decided. He wasn’t losing it.
The ring on his finger sparked. He flexed his hand.
Oh, no no. We can’t be having that.
With a snap, the ring fizzled out. Guy’s hand seized. The feeling of his muscles binding was nails being driven through his bones from the tips of each finger. He opened his mouth to let out a bloodcurdling scream, his voice finally finding purchase when it cried out in pain and fear. For some reason, Guy realized, it couldn’t warn Davey. But it could let him know his suffering.
The dark nurse gave Guy an alien look, an uncanny expression of faux concern that would make even demon nurse Ratched shudder.
Please control your friend.
Now, the grinding glass voice addressed Davey.
I’m off to fetch the doctor.
The door clicked shut behind it. Immediately, the room seemed to brighten. As though the sun had finally escaped confinement behind the clouds.
“What is happening?” Davey asked in a panicked whisper. “Guy?”
But Guy’s eyes were glued to the closed door. He knew that the thing would be returning. How he was so certain, he couldn’t say. But he could see it in his mind’s eye. Its shimmering form, slowly skulking through the hallways along three sinewy legs.
“I don’t know,” replied Guy, his voice renewed. He clenched his fist and looked at his ring. No response. Guy took a deep breath. At least his control was returning. He clumsily swung his feet over the side of the bed, setting them down softly on the tile floor. All across his body his skin was on fire; his only perception, pins and needles. “Do you remember how you got in here?”
“Don’t you?” Davey was in over his head. Guy could see the panic in his eyes. “What is happening?”
“I was knocked out by the baseball,” he explained, “I was unconscious when they brought me to the room.”
“Are we planning an escape? From the hospital?”
“Davey, you need to listen to me. Something is after me, and that means it’s after us. I don’t know what it is, but…” Guy’s heart was pounding. He knew he sounded crazy. But Davey nodded. He believed.
“Gold Lantern shit, got it.”
Guy paused.
“What did you just say?”
Shadow crept over the room. The sun must have disappeared back behind the clouds.
Davey blinked. “Gold Lantern shit?”
Guy looked down at his ring. He hadn’t told Davey about what happened with John. He hadn’t even been back to Earth since their metamorphosis.
“I saw your ring,” Davey offered, and Guy narrowed his eyes. Was Davey reacting to his body language? Or something else entirely? “Why are you looking at me like that?” he asked.
Another knock at the door. Three quick rasps which thundered through Guy’s head like cannon shots. Was it back? Had the dark thing returned? Guy couldn’t take his eyes off of Davey.
Was it with him right now?
He slowly got to his feet, pins and needles subsiding, eyes locked on his old friend, and started towards the door.
When he reached it, he paused. His foot was planted in the door jamb, blocking it from opening. One hand on the knob. His gaze steadily trained on Davey.
The knob jiggled.
Guy’s hand tightened.
“Guy? You there?” called a voice from the other side. “I see your shadow. Open the damn door, you son of a gun!”
It was a voice Guy recognized. Deep, authoritative, and brusque. Harsh and expectant. But now, welcome more than ever.
He turned the knob. The lock latch popped open. The door swung to reveal his brother in arms, dressed in a worn brown military jacket, a white t-shirt underneath, and faded jeans. He had dark hair with brown eyes that were lit up with a warm smile.
Guy yanked him into the room and slammed the door. The clipboards on the wall clattered down. Quickly, he locked the door and spun around. Guy wrapped him in a tight embrace.
“Woah! Ease up a bit!”
Guy relinquished his grip, and looked his friend over again. There was no mistaking it.
“Hal? You’re here?”
“That’s right,” Hal Jordan said, and Guy put him in a second bear hug. “I’m here to pick you up and take you home, kiddo.”
Guy looked over Hal’s shoulder out the hospital window.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

2024.05.23 01:58 Famous_Operation9694 Focal area shape difference between progressives and multifocal readers

I have a pair (my first pair ever) of prescription progressives from Warby Parker that I have never gotten used to. The distortion as I walk around or move my head is just too distracting.
At the same time, because my distance prescription is fairly weak and is almost completely corrected by a power of reading glasses 1/2x less than what I use for reading (that is, I read with 2x glasses and can use 1.5x glasses for seeing at distance), I found that a pair of Foster Grant multifocal readers work great!
With the prescription progressives, the reading portion of the lens is sort of blob-shaped near the lower center of each lens, whereas with the multifocal readers, the transition from reading to distance magnification runs more horizontally across the width of the lens. With those, as I move my head horizontally, there is much less distortion, in fact, almost none and I can still turn my eyes downward to get the reading magnification.
So, my question is are there any prescription progressives made with the focal area shape of multifocal readers? If that is a thing, does that build have a name so I can ask for it specifically? Because I think those would work for me and I would have a much wider range of frames to choose from. I asked someone at Warby Parker and at the eye glass desk at Costco and neither really knew what I was talking about.

2024.05.23 00:51 hereslookinatyoukld Eras part I screenshots

Eras part I screenshots
I've been working on this for myself for a few months, but I thought I'd put it together and share it. I've put together a bunch of screenshots of the tour visuals, using a few different nights since its really hard to find a continuous stream that shows the stage and the screen. The point is to have a reference library for myself, to try and figure out the story I think she's telling. This is not comprehensive, I'm sure I've missed some important visuals, so if you think I'm missing any shots let me know. It's also focused on the visuals, so while there are a few shots of choreography I know are important I have not put a lot of choreo in. I'm still working on Eras II, and should add it within the next couple of weeks. From what I can tell though, outside of the transitions and TTPD nothing has changed. Even folkmore is just rearranging the visuals from Eras I.
Part 1: LoveFearless
Part 2: evermore/reputation
Part 3: Speak Now/folklore
Part 5: Red/1989
Part 6: Midnights
Here's a link to all my eras screenshots uncurated
Bonus: a few of the many rainbow lens flares included in the eras movie.

General thoughts after completing this project:
  • fearless and red have super boring visuals. They remain mostly the same for the entire sets, with a little more variation in red (pluss ATW). Also, as far as I can tell there is no significance to these visuals.
  • reputation is imo the most interesting visually. every song is packed full of meaning.
    • ready for it: tons of duality, from negative images to the use of black and white. It could be referencing the dual muses in the song, or something broader. has a lot of pink lights.
    • Delicate: she shatters the glass. what glass? who knows, lol.
    • Don't Blame Me: full of cages and fire imagery. Also mirrored Taylor's on the big screen
    • LWYMMD: kind of already super discussed, but glass closets that shatter when the old taylor is dead. Also she is banging on the speak now taylor's closet when she says all I think about is Karma, which seems relevant
  • Their is a lot of dual, mirrored Taylors on the big screen. Obviously this is mostly so all parts of the stadium can see her, but she shifts seemingly randomly from a single big Taylor, identical dual Taylors, and mirrored dual Taylors, so I have to wonder if there's any additional significance.
  • some of the shapes that appear on the floor during the Red set reappear during shake it off, making me wonder if its just visual noise or if there is any hidden meaning behind the shapes

2024.05.23 00:33 cartoon_Dinosaur Second Contact Chapter 3

Thank you to Space paladin for the canvas and u/Acceptable_Egg5560 for proofreading and critique
[First]-[Prev]-[Next]
Memory transcript: Maarchal , MESEA Astronomers. Date: [Standard Farsul calendar ] september 8th, 3675
The light from the window had roused me from sleep. The early morning sun painted the clouds in a red to pink light. The cold air outside made its way into our room, I'd of been cold if it wasn't for what, our rather who I was sleeping with under my covers. Ponthyt had his arms wrapped around me, his left arm was over the top of my torso and his paw on my stomach and his right arm under my head, giving me a pillow. His legs were wrapped around mine and I had my head nuzzled under his.
I liked this, I was so comfy and I greatly enjoyed his warmth. I closed my eyes and tried to get back to sleep, to enjoy this bliss a little longer.
I heard a scuttle at the foot of our bed accompanied by a chorus of hushed giggles. I tried to pretend I hadn't heard that. As the scuttles came closer and around my side of the bed I barely opened one eye, just enough to see two sets of eyes and ears peeking over the edge and staring directly at me, one much bigger than the other.
I told you they were still asleep, c’mon lets get some creams!!!”
They then slowly lowered down and as quietly as they could manage, they scuttled out of our room and downstairs towards the kitchen. I sat up and shook Ponthyt awake.
“Hmm?” He moans in a questioning manner as his eyes barely parted to look at me.
“The trouble makers are up early and raiding the kitchen, go stop their mischief.” I say as I lay back down.
He stretches out his limbs and yawns. “And why can't you?” He says deep in fatigue.
I chuckle and pat him on the shoulder. “Cause it's YOUR appetite they inherited, you'll have to force them and the jars apart!”
He looks at me with half open eyes. “Damn, well I guess I better go get 'em. I’ll start breakfast while I'm at it. Anything you want today?”
I pull up the covers and snuggle in the residual heat. “Hmm, how about mashed fleat cakes?”
He nodes and licks me goodbye. He then exits our room and I hear a commotion downstairs. Muffled giggle screams emanate from the kitchen. I close my eyes and absorb the last of Ponthyts warmth before I force myself up and downstairs.
I turn towards the kitchen and I see two grumpy faces sitting at the table with fatty creams strewn about their faces. Ponthyt is on his hands and knees wiping up the spilled cream off the ground. He was splattered in it and looked amused with the pup's antics. I chuckled at the chaotic display. “Don’t worry, I'll start breakfast while you tend to… that.” I turn towards the cupboards and bring out a bottle of fat and some fleat fruit. I pour some fat into a pan and turn on the heat. While I wait for it to heat up I skin and mash fleat fruit in a bowl. Before adding some eggs and milk to make it more liquidy.
“Mom, why can't we have cream for breakfast?” asked Quarmur.
“Because it's not healthy, I want you to grow up big and strong. You need to eat more than fatty creams to do that.” I pour the fleat batter into the pan and it sizzles as it covers the surface.
“Why?” I turn around and walk towards the table.
“Because you're made of more than fat.” I poked her belly as I said that and she giggled. I then turned back towards the stove and wedged a spatula under the fleat batter and flipped it over.
“Hey Ponthyt, when your done with that can you get some grubs from the pit outside?” As Ponthyt wipes the last of the cream off the ground he looks up at me.
“Yeah, I’ll toss this in the washing machine first.” He says as he gets up and makes his way out of the kitchen.
I then pick up the Fleat cake out of the pan and divide it into fourths and make two glasses of greenberry juice and place the pieces on plates. Ponthyt comes back in with a couple grubs that I place on the plates with a hearty helping of greenberries. I take over the pups plates and glasses as Ponthyt takes over ours.
I barley placed the food down before the pups made quick work of the food. By the time me and Ponthyt begin eating the pups are finished and running around the house. Ponthyt was eating rather slowly, I finished before him and I looked jealousy at his food before he pushed it towards me. I ate ravenously with the pups not seeing me.

We rounded a corner towards the school. “Alright, get your bags, let's get a move on,” I said as I exited the auto. I opened the back door to let the pups out. Quarmur stops and looks up at me with an annoyed look.
“Mom, why were we in timeout for eating creams?” I kneel down and wipe crumbs off her fur and throw some crayons that fell out back in the auto before I look her in the eyes.
“Because you were being naughty, and naughty things get you a time out.”
“But why?”
“Because if we just did what we wanted most people would be sad.”
She took on a confused look “Why?”
I grabbed my muzzle and contemplated how to explain it to her. “Well, me and dad are saving those creams for your birthday next week. We're going to make all kinds of treats for you, but even if none of it was for you it would have been for someone. If you just ate all the creams you'd get sick and someone else wouldn't get any.”
She looked down at the ground. “Like when a boy took my crayons?” I nodded
“Yes, naughty things make people sad.”
“What about spankings?” I sighed.
“That's only for really naughty things. Like if that boy that took your crayons smashed them.”
“I’ve never been spanked, am I a good pup?”
I rubbed her head and flopped around her ears , causing her to giggle. “Your a great pup, you just get in harmless trouble like anyone your age should.”
“But I thought you said I was naughty?"
“You did something naughty, you're still a good pup. Just promise me you’ll learn from being naughty ok?” She smiled and nodded, her tail wagging fast. I licked her on the muzzle before standing up and grabbing her paw, leading her towards the school.
Ponthyt was lifting up Kurvuss up onto his shoulders before he sat him on top and began making machine-like noises, walking up to the preschool door and shaking his shoulders rapidly. Kurvuss seemed to control which way he was walking by pulling on his dads ears.
“Ruburburburburburburburburburbur” Kurvuss was giggling , interpreted by the vibrations, making a sound similar to when the pups howl into a running fan.
Quarmur, tugs on my arm and looks up at me. “Mom can you do that with me?” She was pointing at her father and younger brother.
“I’m sorry, no I think that would be too much for me.” She looked upset.
“Why? It wasn't last year, is it because you're fatter?” I chuckled at the indigent bluntness of the child.
“Well, you got a bit bigger, and yes. I am a little bit bigger but I’m not fat. You're getting another sibling.
She looked up suddenly with a confused look. “But I want a ride, not another brother.”
I lowered myself down to look at her directly. “Well, you might be getting a sister, and you’ll be able to give them rides.”
“Like that?”
I nodded and she began beaming and hugged me. Before running to the doors. Ponthyt passed her as she ran. He rounded behind me and put his arm on my shoulder. “What was that about?”
“Oh I just told her the good news.”
He snapped back to look at me. “I thought we were going to wait till her party to announce it?”
I waved my paw in the air dismissively, “ah let her have it. She's way more excited about giving more rides then some silly surprise.”
I nuzzled up against Ponthyt as we watched the pups get into their respective cliques. Getting ready for their day of learning and playing with their friends.

**\*

“And done!!!” I put the brush back on the shelf after rinsing it in water. I took a step back to admire my work. The painting would need to dry but me and Ponthyt were finally done.
I admired our artistic rendition of the planet Curbosa and its many massive moons. The writhing mass of dark and light blue that made up the planet was an ever changing mosaic of shapes of the monochrome color palette. Its surrounding moons were variations of gray or white. Except for a dark brown orb that we believed to be the biggest moon in the solar system. Big enough to keep its own thick atmosphere.
Ponthyt came up beside me and wiped his brow. “Wow, I think this is the best one we’ve made.”
I rested my head against his side and sighed.
“You seem offly proud as well, considering how intensely you are staring at it.”
I chuckled and taped him on the arm. “Yeah I'm proud of this. Not only have we made a beautiful rendition of Curbosa, but we also made it accurate to how they would look relative to each other. So many years have I studied how they moved. Now we can predict where they will be weeks in advance… I just wish we knew why they moved like that or what exactly caused gravity.”
He rubbed my side “We’ll figure it out, we just need to hammer out our theory to fit all the puzzle pieces together.”
I breathed deeply. Saying what we had to do was easy, but actually applying math and data to make sense of our world was anything but trivial.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Before we had time to properly respond the door was opened. A stout elderly Farsul came through the gateway. He had graying fur all along his body and was draped in a dark green uniforme made from what appeared to be a thick and heavy material. He looked down at the floor, taking note of the paint staining the carpet before he followed the walls staring up at the paintings of the celestial body's me and Ponthyt made.
“... I didn't realize I walked into an art studio, rather than an observatory.” He spoke with a low, heavy voice. There was a tinge of some accent I couldn't place. His steps were slow and deliberate, and his paws were held behind his back as he glanced at us.
“What are you doing here? Tours are only on select days and scheduled weeks in advance!” Ponthyt spoke with an indigent, confused tone that I frankly shared at this rude man. Before I noticed his firearm and rows and rows of medals on his shirt.
“Ponthyt… I think he’s military.” I pointed to his metals and Ponthyt took note of them, and took on a look of mild fear and even greater confusion. The military man chuckled in his throat.
“You two don't keep a finger to the pulse of your nation's news much? Well, I’m Admiral Gurq. I’ve come here to enlist you two for a… personal project of mine.”
He walked out of our studio and came back shortly with a briefcase and set it down on an empty table. “I heard about your project using pulses of light to detect where and how an object is moving. I believe a national security threat has made that tech application prudent to explore.”
He undoes the latches and opens the case. He takes out a photograph and flings it towards us on the table, it stopped just before it falls off the edge. Me and ponthyt cautiously take chairs and sit down, before the admiral does also.
Ponthyt takes the photo, studies it and hands it to me. It was a black and white photo of a Farsul wearing some kind of PPE made of rubber that seemed to have pockets in it to store some kind of filling. It covered him head to toe and a mask topped it off. I recognized that mask. It was the iconic symbol of atomic researchers. He was holding a colossal pair of tongs and was manipulating a small cylinder that I assumed was fuel for some kind of reactor.
“This is a fission reactor worker, one of the first. He's taking spent fuel to be disposed of, a routine procedure. But do you know what happened to him?” Me and Ponthyt shake our heads as I slide the photo back to the admiral. “When he dumped the spent fuel in the waste something happened. The whole waste bin began to heat up rapidly and melted through the floor. Before it cooled enough to stop its trip to the mantle.”
He then slides another photo that had a picture of a melted floor with debris filling the bottom. “We had no Idea what caused it. This was at a reactor testing facility at the south pole and it had our scientists stumped for years. Spent fuel shouldnt have enough energy or be unstable enough to spontaneously react like that. We only recently confirmed the cause ”
I shot up to look at the admiral. “Wait, this was during the testing phase forty some years ago? And you only found out what caused it now?” He nodded
“Nuclear science was a blossoming field. We had only just got a reactor to be self-sufficient. Let alone producing excess power. We were sailing in a cyclone of uncertainties.” He spoke with a grave inflection that sent shivers down my spine. Ponthyt put his paw on mine and rubbed it to comfort me. But I could see he was just as disturbed by the admiral's tone as I was.
Dread threatened to swallow my heart as he slid another photograph to us. It seemed to be a crater of uncertain size, it was in a desert and the near perfectly circular ring confused me. Had there been a meteor strike that I didn't hear about?
“We figured out what caused that waste meltdown, it was something we call the devils spit. But officially it's an element called plutonium. It is an even more unstable element than U-235. It is produced by nuclear reactors that use U-235. It was produced in much higher concentration in that early reactor than in later models. We only discovered it recently.”
I felt myself be muddled in confusion. “Why in all these decades of research have you only discovered it now?”
He sighs as he slides us another photograph. “People who worked on that reactor all died from radiation poisoning soon after the meltdown. We lost many great minds and we didn't want to lose more. So we banned research on that site until remote operated machines were developed.”
We take the photograph and stare at it. It was a rather crude vehicle, with two massive robotic appendages connected to the chassis. One had a massive crude looking four digit claw with the digits arranged in pairs and set to opposing the other pair. The other was a massive circular saw. The back of the vehicle had what appeared to be other attachments the arms could switch between including a drill and a bucket. It was a tall massive creation that had three snow tires that were taller than the Farsul standing near it. He seemed to be holding a large boxy apparatus that had sticks protruding out from the flat surface, the box also seemed to be connected to massive cables that lead up to a massive spool of the cable on the back of the vehicle.
“This kinda looks like explorer two.” The famous probe that was sent to study our rocky planet neighbor Ruea was an icon among those who loved space. So the resemblance was obvious.
“Yes, the Department of energy commissioned MASEA's robotic department to build it so they could study the decades old mysterious meltdown. I was also there as using spent fuel potentially concerned the military.” He scoffed. “Not for the reasons I imagined it for but it did vary much so concerned the military. “ He rubbed his muzzle and closed his eyes and chuckled to himself.
“Wait, you said the cause was the element plutonium. But there is no such element?” He opened his eyes and gave me a waverting smile.
“Yes, we only discovered it after taking samples of the devils spit. An element produced by the reactor. We tested its capabilities in the deserts up north… But one of the first reactors that incorporated the substance had a failure. These reactors were operated remotely so no personnel were at risk but that reactor ran away from us far far faster than the first.” He stood up and walked over to us.
“So fast that I… approved testing if it could be made into a bomb… and it can… a terrible, terrible bomb.” He paced around us, I didn't know how to process this. Sure, new weapons of war were never a good thing but how bad could this new bomb be?
He circled back down to his seat and rummaged through his briefcase. “While the DOE continued to develop the plutonium reactors to explore their potential and did end up rolling out a few stable designs that could enrich spent fuel… I oversaw the development of the bombs.” He took out yet another photo and slid it to us. This time it was what appeared to be a large black ovoid with a Farsul standing near it. Just barely a head taller than the object.
“That was the first prototype. It was dropped in the desert and punched that mile wide crater. I showed you the picture of it.”
Horror filled my chest at the implications of such a powerful weapon. He breathed in deeply and let out a long sigh. “But that's not the worst of it, we developed even more powerful versions. The biggest being a fusion bomb that uses the initial explosion to compress a tritium core, causing an even larger fusion bomb.” He then slides another photo to us. This time it was a rocket flying through the atmosphere. “Now imagine these bombs are stuck into rockets, they can travel and strike anywhere on the planet. They are just a single relatively small object but can annihilate a city of any size.”
What the admiral had explained was a terrifying prospect of total destruction on a scale unseen before in our entire history. Anger was boiling within me, directed at the admiral for developing such an evil creation “Why, under heaven's blue sky… Would you continue to make them worse? Why would you strap them to a rocket and make this kind of devastation even possible!” He stood up and paced in front of us.
“I had to explore what the limits of this tech were, if it's any consolation the information to build them is under tight lock and key and I intend to never use them.”
“It isn't.”
He looks down and rubs the end of his muzzle and sighs.
“But what do you want us for? This tech is under your control, why not just burn the documents and dismantle any bombs you made?”
He puts his paw on the back of his head and laughs. “I wish I could, but… The Crafur archipelago “liberated” a high ranking scientist involved with the project that is a ethnic descendant of them. They aren't happy we developed a power source that replaced their oil palms and crippled their economy as a result. They were suspicious of us and kidnaped him to know exactly what we were doing. Now they have all they need to make those bombs themselves.” He sits back down as he pulls at his head fur. “We are manufacturing a stockpile in hopes that they wouldn't be stupid enough to attack us if we can deliver an equally powerful blow.”
Ponthyt stood up and spoke up in a voice dripping in fear. “What does… any of this have to do with us?”
The Admiral then points to the paintings on the wall. “Your lidar tech could be instrumental in developing a counter weapon if any of the Crafur regional dictators threw a few of their bombs at us. I want you and a few other scientists I’m recruiting to work on an anti missile lidar defense mechanism. Using your in time calculations of its trajectory you we could drastically improve our capabilities at shooting them down before they can blow up our cities”
Ponthyt sits back down. “What would this entail?”
The admiral pats down his uniform before staring at us. “You two would be shipped off to a remote site to begin developing and testing the system. In order to maintain secrecy. You will… disappear, at least for a number of years. We will make sure you're as anonymous as possible and that when the system is made public… along with the bombs, no one will know you worked on it.”
Dread and anger began to drive my motions, before I calmed them down and responded. “What of our children?”
A sadness overtook the admiral's features. And Ponthyt seemed to share the same emotion only ten times as intensely. “They will be moved with you to the site..”
Anger began to fill me with abject terror and uncontested fury. “ How DARE YOU!!! They have a life here! Friends , family and events! I will not willingly uproot their lives!.”
Ponthyt stands up with a calm disgust at the farsul “We will never subject that to our pups, our very world, to that just to help clean up the mess YOU made!!!”
The waste of space in front of us took on a look of quiet rage. “You don't have a choice, I am enlisting you whether or not you come willingly.”
I grabbed a cup and was about to throw it at the demon before Ponthyt grabbed my arm and gave me a look that told me he had a plan. “Are you really going to make a pregnant woman work on your side hustle?” He guides my hand back down and places the cup back on the table. “You can take me, but Maarchal stays here with our pups.” I snap back at him. He uttered not a lie but I was hesitant to make that kind of threat.
The admiral smoothes out his head fur and clears his throat. “It doesn't matter, I gave you classified military information which now makes you a threat to national security. Which means I have the right and authority to do with you as is necessary. Besides I don't see how pregnancy will prevent you from the work you’ll do. Your thinkers, will be working in a lab with a team, not grunts.” He stood up and he left the room. “You shall be given a few hours to gather your necessities and sentimentals. My soldiers will observe you to ensure no contraband shall be brought along, then you shall be escorted to gather your children. I look forward to seeing you at the site.”
Me and Ponthyt stared at each other. A cold dread washed over us, so powerful I felt I was going limp. Ponthtyt stared at me, with a shell shocked look. As we contemplated our situation the pair of soldiers arrived as the admiral had stated.
Only a few hours left in our home

2024.05.22 23:58 An_Salvus Could the black garden be a failed recreation of the pale heart?

I like reading lore, but I am not the best thinker. Yet I think this holds merit. I shall try and explain my support. 1. We are, essentially, explicitly told the black heart is a recreation of the veil. It was even used, by some quantum thingymigy, to co-opt the veil's place with the connection to the traveler. 2. The vex tend to create "simulated" realities for their real big projects. The infinite forest as an area to run holistic stuff (from what I understand, could be misinterpreting that) is one example. Vault of glass for time shenanigans. Maybe the black garden was, originaly, a typical vex pocket that was "converted" after their failed recreation first came to be. 3. The trailers I have seen from the Final Shape shows us what the inside of the traveler looks like. The pale heart (the space/setting) looks quite like a nicer version to the black garden to me. 4. Ahamkara reside in both. Since we've learnt the ahamkara might have a connection to inside the traveler, they could have learnt of the "false garden" and decide it was free real estate. 5. The witness had access to within the black garden, but not the paleheart. Why would they be able to enter one realm so easily but not the pale heart? 6. The head of a vex gate lord is the key for the black garden, yet the pale heart needs the full veil.
So my current theory is that the original space the vex made the black heart was influenced by the pale heart, but since the black heart isn't a perfect recreation of the veil, what we see is like a reflection or a "faulty interpretation."
TL:dr - The vex made a space for their experiment, created their faulty experiment, and the space fundamentally changed to mirroimitate what was within the traveler.
