I think this is overkill

2024.06.03 10:09 andrewtiberiusmusic I think this is overkill

1 I'm looking to build a pc that can do various tasks such as stream, use music editing software (a DAW, Ableton Live and Reason), as well as video editing. Kinda an all-in-one package for my streaming channel. I make music and play retro games, usually on emulator, or directly from a capture card with retro consoles. I may play some higher performance required games in the future like remakes that use much higher frame rates, but that's down the road a bit.
I put together a list here but I think that it's a bit overkill. I'm not entirely sure what is required for each task (and no, I will likely not be doing them at the same time. The most I'll be doing simultaneously is use a DAW OR emulator and streaming it live. The DAW will have a streamlined DJ set instead of a full production set to reduce CPU and the emulator I doubt will require any CPU heavy lifting as well). The only thing I'm worried about is the video editing.
I'm not really into newer games so I don't think that I need anything super advanced but I want this build to last me a long time. My budget is around $1200-1300. This parts list is over budget and I know there are things I can trim but I don't know what's necessary and what isn't. This is my first build, I'm coming from mac. Any help is appreciated.

2024.04.04 13:18 dirt-diglett New Ryzen 5800X build no BIOS/can't get display output

I'm helping a friend with his new build using new components and he's having trouble getting display output or even just getting to the BIOS. The PC powers up, all fans turn on as do all the LEDS of components like the GPU, the cooler pump, etc. There is just no BIOS or display output and I can't turn the PC off using the front panel power button, if I hold it down for 10 seconds it just flashes the LED and doesn't turn off.

His Build with the issue:

Type Item
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 3.8 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Corsair iCUE H115i RGB ELITE 89 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard Gigabyte B550M AORUS ELITE Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory
Storage Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card Asus TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB Video Card
Case NZXT H5 Flow ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply Corsair RM750e (2023) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

My known-good working build that I'm using for testing components:

Type Item
CPU AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 3.7 GHz 12-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Corsair H100i RGB PLATINUM 75 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard Gigabyte X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard
Memory Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory
Storage Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive
Video Card Asus TUF GAMING GeForce RTX 3080 10GB 10 GB Video Card
Power Supply Corsair SF750 750 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Supply

The BIOS was flashed with version FE and thus should support the CPU, but I get no display output and no indication of posting/booting but the LEDs on the GPU/CPU Cooler light up, and all the fans spin so there is power. The other quirky thing is that I cannot force turn it off using the front panel power button by holding it down for 10 seconds, it just flashes when I try.
I've found this thread with the same symptoms but no solution: https://www.reddit.com/buildapc/comments/15h1nl4/gigabyte_aorus_b550m_elite_v2_no_post_no_beep/

I'm using the HDMI display output of the GPU but have also tried all the DisplayPort ports too.

The troubleshooting/isolation I've done is:

The trouble I'm finding is I have no POST speaker so don't get any beep codes, there's no debug LEDs on this board so there's absolutely no feedback from the board on what could be wrong!

The supplier isn't willing to just replace the board again but I have tested every other component and the only common component left is the motherboard...

Is there anything else I could be missing here? All the components should be compatible based on my understanding so I have no idea what's going on.

2024.03.29 10:00 CYSauce Looking for help with my build (Strix 3090) (i7-12700k)

Hi all,First time building a sff and would really appreciate some help with my build. I currently have a micro ATX setup and want to switch my cpu and gpu over. Here are the parts I have so far:PcPartPicker
Type Item

Mobo Asus ROG STRIX B760-I GAMING WIFI Mini ITX LGA1700 Motherboard
Memory TEAMGROUP T-Create Expert 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory
Video Card Asus ROG STRIX WHITE OC GeForce RTX 3090 24 GB Video Card

Case Formd T1 Sandwich V2.1
Case Fan Phanteks PH-F120T30 67 CFM 120 mm Fan (x2)
I've heard that the Phanteks are great for top exhaust fans and I'm trying to figure out what the best option for a CPU cooler would be. I looked at the Noctua NH-L12 37.79 CFM CPU Cooler but figured it wouldn't fit due to the size of the 3090 so some alternatives would be really appreciated. Any suggestions for the build would be great!I'm really just trying to optimize the build to keep noise levels down so I'm fine spending extra for good cooling. I plan to undervolt both the CPU and GPU and don't do anything too intensive that would push either of them often (More intensive games that I sometimes play would be Apex or Helldivers, and Minecraft).Again, any help would be really appreciated!
Thanks!

2024.02.02 20:38 M4ximonster Sanity check on build

Giving my old pc to my mother in law and building a new one for myself, but have not been keeping up with the hardware at all so I would appreciate some additional pairs of eyes telling me if I am doing something stupid or could do better.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Extra info or particulars: Current build I had in mind:
Notes: Motherboards are a jungle to me, definitely need advice there. I don't care about Wi-Fi or fancy RGB or anything, if it boots decently fast and does what it needs to do I'm good.
Is the Power Supply beefy enough?

2023.12.20 21:08 GlassGriffon Looking for a build check and optimization recommendations

Hi! I'm building a new PC (for the first time since 2014!) and am looking for advice on my parts list.
Intended Use: This PC will primarily be for gaming. Apart from that, I am interested in editing 1080p videos and want to make sure I won't have any issues there.
Ideal Settings: I currently have two 1080p monitors but am looking to upgrade to 1440p monitors in the future. Ideally, I want to be able to run games on the highest settings with 80+ fps. I mostly play story-driven, single-player games, so high refresh rate isn't as important to me. I just need something that can handle a lot of mods.
Budget/Country: I am purchasing in the US, and my maximum budget is $2000 including tax and shipping. I'd like to be somewhere between $1500-1750, so if there are any obvious downgrades or price optimizations please let me know! (I chose the fans for RGB purposes and suspect they're a bit expensive.)

I'm pretty committed to a CPU cooler with a customizable LCD screen and would prefer to stick around this CPU/GPU range, but I'm open to all recommendations. If there are any other small components like cables that I need to order, that would be good to know. Thanks for all your help! :)

Desktop build won’t start, ignition on and lights won’t even start up.
I just put this hunk of a junk together and as the title implies, I can’t get any sign of life out of the thing. I am ready to take on any possible suggestions before having to purchase another PSU, thank you beforehand for reading the post.
Some things I’ve tried already: - unplugged & replugged all the wires n cables. - started up with 2 stick of RAM, re-sat both puppies separately and individually on each try. - disconnected the GPU and ran it. - tried another power cable, and another power outlet. - (Separate SATA SSD drive wasn’t plugged in to begin with, just on my components list)
1 thing to note! The NVME drive I got sitting in it right now came straight out of another AMD build with windows 11, I was hoping it would post into BIOS so I can wipe it, not sure if that’s a silly move.

2023.12.13 18:52 FriendlyCrypto NCASE M1EVO with Ryzen 5 7600 & RX 7900 XTX

Can anyone confirm this MOBO & GPU will be compatible with the M1EVO in flipped config? I believe they should be based on published dimensions, but would like to double check.
Rig will be used for 4k casual gaming and WFH station. Outside of case fitment, any substitutions or changes I should be considering at this price point?
Note the correct case is here.

2023.12.07 06:07 Chergam Am I missing any troubleshooting steps?

I built a PC a few years ago in an NZXT H210i case though I recently found a good deal on a used 3080 Ti which meant I had to remove the bottom fan of the 240mm AIO cooler to fit it. The PC still worked fine though it obviously wasn't ideal so after some research I bought a Fractal Pop Mini Air to fit everything properly.
I swapped over all my components but now, no matter what I do, I keep getting the red CPU status LED on my motherboard. I've tried reseating all cables, reseating RAM, reseating GPU, plugging the 8 pin CPU cable to a different port on the power supply, swapping the power supply (including power supply cables), and swapping the CPU.
Is there anything else that I might have missed while troubleshooting or is it pretty safe to say that the motherboard is dead? When the mobo is given power the RAM, audio jacks, chassis fans, and GPU still light up which is the only thing giving me hope that it's not dead but that might just be false hope.

Logic for each part:
CPU: Price to performance for single core tasks, largely trusting Puget Systems benchmarks here. Chose the X since it can be ran in eco-mode or undervolted and perform similar to 7900 for the same price. I really want to try delidding and lapping but if experienced builders can break a CPU, then I can. I don't want to risk my friend's build and $$$.

CPU Cooler: Lots of conflicting recommendations on this, may change from IS-55 to AXP120x67 with some experimenting. Will replace fan with Noctua NF-A 12x25 based on reviews/tests.
Motherboard: Can't find many reviews on itx boards, tldr Gigabyte seemed the least problematic. I do intend to overclock so I excluded A620.
Memory: Looks like Ram compatibility on AM5 is a cluster. I just picked the lowest profile Hynix die on the mobo QVL and stopped worrying about speeds altogether.
Storage: Looking for fastest SSDs for a quick and snappy feel. Considering the total cost of the build, the additional price for 990 Pros seemed negligible. Heatsink to help case temps as much as possible.
PSU: Just wanted an ITT tier A/B with capacity for degradation/upgrades that wasn't so large that it would waste energy at idle. SF600 gold was unavailable but this one wasn't wasn't much more.
GPU: We already have a 3060 that will be carried over, gaming isn't priority but may upgrade this in the future. GPU width largely affects this case.
Sorry for the terribly long post, thank you in advance!

2023.11.21 21:39 t0b4cc02 Making a Build

Hi!
Im about to make part of a build. Id go for a smaller Build but I dont get the graphics card yet, so I think the D31 with a very small PSU is a good solution. Dont mind the RAM I have some weird workloads where I use this.
Does this work or did I overlook sth?
EDIT: I checked now how the screen of the case works and decided against it (would really like some on board sensor reading capabilities) so that makes the jonsbo just a normal small case. open for suggestions

2023.11.14 01:50 jzjman Recommend a DLSS GPU for this setup

I heard only the RTX has DLSS. Can’t afford the 4090 or even 4080. Would the 2xxx suffice? Would be for gaming mostly MSFS.

2023.11.11 20:05 Connect_Math6884 Shred my build - First time pc building advice please :)

First time ever building a pc and I have tried my best to do a lot of research but I am sure there are some mistakes I am making.
For context I want to use this pc for work (coding, excel, other software (not graphic intensive) and I want it to last me a long time with only having to make minor upgrades over time. I want it to be quick and snappy.
Here is the list of parts that I currently have planned for my build:
CPU: Intel Core i7-13700k (might be overkill but if its a good long term move I'm ok to spend a little more now)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4
Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z790M-Plus Micro ATX
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 32GB
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M2.2280
Case: Fractal Design Pop Mini Air MicroATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair SF750 750 W 80 + platinum Certified

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you :)
p.s. not planning to do any gaming on this so I opted for integrated graphics.
