2024.04.24 00:27 Powerful_Corgi_3387 My First Month of OE and Lessons Learned

I found this reddit page back in February when someone made a joke about moonlighting engineers on a teams call.. lo and behold here I am two months later overemployed.
Thank you to all the people in this sub, that first paycheck had me feeling like Floyd Mayweather at the dinner table. Paying it forward, and here are all of the things that I prepped for, and did to make it through the first few weeks.

Pre J2 Start

Software Solutions

Hardware Solutions

There are different takes here, but my preference was to keep everything HW related separate (minus keyboards and mice).

Lessons Learned So Far

  1. The urge to tell people goes away after you start.. but this shit was eating me up before I started. I ended up only telling my spouse and one of my best friends since childhood. Sorry guys, I failed.
  2. People ask about linkedin, or where I worked, I tell them WHAT I DID.. not where I did it. I've been trying to keep my J1 out of all conversations and talk about the work I was doing at the job before my J1 when people ask where I'm coming from (since just hr and two senior management people at the company know my resume and where I actually came from this should be fine)
  3. I ended up withholding extra from my J2 paycheck, and setting my J1 to max out an after-tax 401k using MBDR which has around 55k of room after employer match. This has helped with not feeling an ability to make huge lifestyle creeps, but I would generally suggest setting up a brokerage and having auto contributions to people that dont have MBDR access.
  4. Come up with a reasonable excuse for why you dont want to be featured on the company website, and generally avoid taking photos of yourself or with teams at company events going forward.
  5. Calendar management really has been the biggest pain. How do I justify having 10 random blocks of time on my calendar when it's just my second week on the job.. my strategy has been to move J1 every time there is a conflict for now since I dont know that J2 would be too thrilled with the new guy having the calendar conflict for a meeting.. but after a few months this should be easier to deal with and I can start asking people at J2 to move meetings more.

ClickJig v1.0 -> Auto-clickeMouse-jiggler

clickjig.com
What's up all? I just finished my first Chrome Extension and think it is pretty cool. While I know there are other auto-clickers/jigglers out there, there aren't many extensions out there. Based on my research, the ones that do exist aren't rated too well.
If you have a need/desire, I'd love it if you tried it out and let me know what your thoughts are. It's a seven-day fully-functional trial and $4.99 for a lifetime license (no credit card required for trial).
Gaining feedback is far more important than driving sales at this point in the game. If you decide to install it and try it out, if you provide me some honest feedback, I'll give you a lifetime license for free. No pressure at all -- I appreciate the support!

2023.12.28 13:54 jbsatter USB-C Screen Jiggler

Is there a USB-C plug-in, kind of like a USB-A mouse-jiggler for a computer or tablet, that I can use with my Android phone to prevent its auto-screen-lock? I'm not looking to make my phone into a jiggler for an actual mouse, and I don't want to suffer the apps that might work for this on the phone. I think I'm searching poorly or there are infinite advertisers for what I don't want.

2023.11.16 13:42 Defiant-Put-5104 Time tracking app

Is there a good app for auto tracking time being spent on a project?
I have multiple clients (not OE) that are not full-time. I need to account for hours spent working on their projects.
I’m think I need an app that auto records when I’m logged on to a specific profile on my machine. Kind of the opposite to a mouse jiggler. When I am idle, it stops counting.
If it’s a manual stopwatch type thing I will inevitably forget to start/stop.
Anyone use apps for this purpose? Thanks

Anti-forensic macOS tray application designed to safeguard your system by monitoring USB ports. It ensures your device's security by automatically initiating either a system shutdown or hibernation if an unauthorized device connects or a connected device is unplugged. It offers the flexibility to whitelist designated devices, to select an action to be executed and to set a countdown timer, allowing to disarm the shutdown process.

What it offers

  • Monitoring: Continuously monitors USB ports for device activity, even in sleep mode.
  • Whitelisting: Allows users to whitelist authorized devices, ensuring hassle-free connectivity.
  • Discrete: Operates in the macOS system tray, minimizing interruptions.
  • Customizable: Allows users to configure various settings, including action (shutdown/hibernate), countdown timer and whitelist.
  • Lightweight: Designed to consume minimal system resources for optimal performance.
  • Privacy: Does not require an internet connection, ensuring the privacy of your data.
  • Open Source: Provides transparency and allows community contributions for continuous development.
  • Auto-Start: You can enable it in the settings menu, so swiftGuard starts automatically on startup.

Why should You care?

A few reasons to use this tool:
  • Anti-Forensic Measures: In case the police or other thugs break in. The police often use a mouse jiggler to prevent the screen saver or sleep mode from being activated.
  • Prevent Data Exfiltration: You do not want someone adding or copying documents to or from your computer via USB.
  • Public Environments: If you frequently use your Mac in public places like libraries or cafes, swiftGuard acts as an additional layer of security against physical attacks in a potentially vulnerable setting.
  • Server Protection: You want to improve the security of your home or company server (e.g. your Raspberry Pi, NAS, etc.).
  • Data Protection Regulations: Many industries and organizations are subject to strict data protection regulations. swiftGuard helps maintain compliance by preventing unauthorized data transfers and access through USB ports.
Tip: You might also want to use a cord to attach a USB key to your wrist. Then plug the key into your computer and run swiftGuard. If your computer is robbed, the USB is removed and the computer shuts down immediately.

What Features are planned next?

  • Bluetooth: If a Bluetooth Device (tries to) connect(s), or if a new Bt Device comes near you MacBook, swiftGuard will shutdown/hibernate.
  • More Actions: When it detects a Manipulation swiftGuard is able to delete or encrypt files/folders, wipe ram, send an email notification, ...)
  • Custom Actions: You can define custom shell/python commands to be executed, e.g., run a script.
  • Linux Support: Cross-platform support.
  • Encryption: More security on top, with password protected configuration and defusing.

2023.09.29 14:23 New_Illustrator2043 1999 Ford f150 help

1999 Ford f150 4.2 6cyl, 120k miles. Problem: Engine temp gauge climbs very high but only when driven on incline, around town on level ground, it’s fine. Heater blows hot air @135-140f, no sweet odors of coolant. Engine oil is not milky and no white smoke from tailpipe. Coolant level is good.
June 2023: 1st tech at a corner shop changed thermostat. Then said “Well, I’m not happy with it”. Temp still rises on incline. I don’t know if it’s a motorcraft thermostat or not. How critical is it to use factory part? Is the jiggler valve position, if it has one, a possible culprit?
August 2023: 2nd shop said there’s “hydrocarbons in the coolant, needs a new motor”. But the truck runs fine.
Sept 2023: A “Mobile Mechanic” came to the house and replaced water pump and radiator (auto zone parts). Then the heater would only blow cool air. I parked truck on driveway incline and used No Spill coolant funnel kit, ran engine at idle with heater on, set at “Panel”, raised & lowered idle to bleed air from system for 1-1/2hrs. I didn’t see a lot bubbles, but some. Heater now works and blows hot air again, but engine temperature stills rises when driven on incline. Any help would be much appreciated.

2023.08.09 16:52 1thatoneguy I've automated my mouse jiggler on a timer, but how can login into my computer automatically?

Hey all.
The only options I've come across involve adjusting auto log-in settings in the BIOS, but I lack administrator access. Perhaps changing my display settings to prevent it from turning off in the first place might work? That way, my teams status can change to away and my automated mouse jiggler can wake it back up.
Thanks everyone!

2023.07.24 16:07 nariz_choken Deciding to leave job over toxic WFH policy

I get one day a week to WFH, during my day, I am fielding at least 6 calls per day, which do not happen while I'm in my office, I am mostly doing AutoCAD or SOLIDWORKS stuff, I've voiced my displeasure over this...
I bought a mouse clicker because it seemed as if anytime my status went to amber on teams someone would call, if I went to pee, someone would call.
Just today I was pondering what else is out there in the job market... And a recruiter called, I have started the process to get an interview somewhere else because I can't stand this bs anymore, also I can't just go back in the office full time as I'm not allowed, I was told that if I did then it would cause problems with the team and some will see me as the one who messed it up for everyone...
I'm fed up! I can't concentrate, can't get shit done due to the constant calls and messages, if you don't answer they get mad, I tried to ignore this doofus and he went to my boss and then I received a nasty email about "not being available"
I won't rewrite my previous thread but holy shit I'm done, this new job is a start up with lots of room to grow and no crazy people I hope.
The thing is, I don't want to just say,
"you made me leave by constantly interrupting me and questioning whether I'm working or not even though I've yet to miss a deadline or ask for more time to do a task"
I feel like this would burn the bridge and in my industry they may be customers of my new company some day... But my sanity is taking a toll, I just left my desk and forgot to turn on jiggler so I made my coffee while the software rendered something, poof, I get a teams call!!! Shit man it took all my composure to not tell this guy off, I spilled coffee on my chest while running to computer so I'm already in a real pissy mood with a red scorched chest

2022.09.24 21:30 dmsc12 Easy jiggler auto siphon vs two piece plastic auto siphon

I’ve been using the two piece plastic auto siphons for a while now, and it usually doesn’t let me down for racking just finished wine into secondary.
The issue comes after the clearing step, i usually use bentonite, and i don’t have a dedicated filter device, so fine lees is the biggest concern. I usually end up with mason jars that have 2 liter or less capacity, and I notice that it’s a lot trickier to hold the end of the siphon hose and rack at the same time without oxidation on one end, and disturbing the lease while getting the siphon started. The one gallon demijohns has enough wine to get the auto siphon started with one hand.
Has anyone used a stainless steel jiggler? Is it a good option for the issue i describe above?

2022.08.14 17:04 oe_no_see_me OE headset, setup, webcam, and other tips

Ok, so just finished my second week of OE. I'm in "DevOps" at both J1 and J2, each at a bit over $100k/yr for a TC in the mid 200's. I really have enjoyed others sharing their perspectives here and some of it has been helpful so I reckon I owe it to share alike.
My experience was that my new J2 filled a really good chunk of my calendar with required onboarding training - some of it just computer based via a LMS and some of live guided Zoom sessions. There were also a number of ad-hoc touch base meetings.
So here what I mean is that my J2 has already demonstrated they don't have a "respect for the end time of a meeting" and will often drag a meeting on longer than it's scheduled time. I've already started to push back on this gently "hey I know we're at time here, so out of respect for your time I wanna let you go". Or if I'm not driving the meeting, at 5 mins till "hey we're coming up on time, and this convo is great - let's schedule a time to continue it".
Also, with regard to webcam culture - I don't think you can do much if a company decides they are an "always on" webcam type of place - so what I do is turn my video off frequently for short periods of time. (at both J's) I'm talking 30 seconds to 2 minutes off, then back on. Multiple times in the same meeting. Sometimes start to eat something on camera - then turn it off while I chew. I think this gives me leverage in the future to address any short times where I need to turn off a camera to speak to the other J because I'm double-booked in a meeting and doing both at the same time. Camera is on at both until I need to speak, I kill the camera at the non speaking J so they don't see me talking "on mute" and then after I speak the camera comes back on - and nobody cares!
I have a big head and find the Razer Blackshark V2 (wireless) edition very comfortable, and I've found it's got a few pretty good OE features as well. So you get the USB wireless dongle that it comes with, and by default that stays connected to J2, but the Blackshark also has a 3.5mm headphone jack on it so when I do a J1 meeting I just plug that in and it overrides the wireless connection so the headset is only connected to J1 laptop. That works really well for alternating between J's - but is not good for overlapping.
When I overlap, I leave the Blackshark on J2 (wirelessly) and I pull out a pair of earbuds with a Mic and plug those into J1 laptop. (Now J1 laptop is already configured to use the audio jack, so no software change to reconfigure anything) and I put the earbuds in UNDER the blackshark headset. The blackshark headset has a volume dial right on the left ear cup, so I can get a good mix so I can listen to both J's. It also has a physical mute button, so for those paranoid like me you can double up on your mute protection.
Now I've got no speaker for the wrong J to overhear - they're both just right in my ear. Just gotta do the mute dance and the webcam dance to make sure only the right mic/webcam see me talking :-)
My jobs are in timezones with a 2 hour difference, it helps with meeting overlap. I can use my J2 lunch to consistently schedule meetings I need to handle at J1 and at the end of my J2 workday, I have a few more hours I can throw at J1. This does make for some long days. Right now I'd say I'm working 10-11 hour days, but between feeling that 60/hrs week for DOUBLE my salary is ok, and being optimistic that thing will chill out a bit more as I get deeper into J2 I think I'll stick it out.
I'm pretty sure my J2 uses software that occasionally takes a pic, but even if they don't I don't want to risk it - so I have a USB switch in-line with my J2 webcam and anytime I'm not in a meeting I just reach up and turn the switch off and it's physically disconnected.
Lots of posts here are like "but what if my J's find out and fire me?" and that's a valid question - if you weren't asking that you wouldn't be thinking enough. So how to mitigate for that risk? Obviously be as careful as you can and try not to have it happen - but I think of that risk as mitigated by a few factors FOR ME PERSONALLY.
1) I got a lot of offers looking for J2, this gives me confidence that if I had to start over I could replace both J's as needed. Your calculations should be realistic about how easy it is for you to replace your J's. OE works best with someone who can obtain J's easily, filter through them, and select the most OE compatible roles. If J's are really hard to come by for you, consider that seriously.
2) The first proceeds from J2 get banked until I have 6 months of living expenses to cover any potential loss of all J's. Fortunately for me this will only be like 2 months of J2 takehome. It's tempting to bite into that first "extra" check but the safety net of knowing I can take 6 months to find replacement jobs if both go away removes a lot of anxiety for me.
3) I am, and plain to maintain, solid performance at both J's. If I ever do get "found out" I want both J's to really have to ponder if they care. If I'm getting good positive feedback from my managers at both J's, turning in solid work, and getting good performance reviews then I hope that a company might just shrug and move on if they found out. I mean, maybe I get fired over the policy - but in that case I bet my managers don't get vindictive and try to burn me at the other J. Imagine if they found out you were OE and said "we don't want you to do that anymore but you are valuable enough here we'll give you a raise to just stay here" - that's the sort of attitude I want to set up for. Would it really happen? I can't know, but if I'm a total slacker and they're looking for an excuse, then they find out it's for sure gonna go bad then.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

2022.08.08 17:50 sombrablack Mouse jiggler or auto-clicking mouse?

Hello!
Last year I developed an auto-clicking for a remote worker 100% success rate as the mouse relies only on a single electronic board added to the mouse that cannot be detected by the computer in any way. Also, the mouse looks completely normal, and you can even install it in ANY mouse.
My question is: For you guys, this auto-clicking mouse, with no moving parts, is 100% undetectable by software and already installed in a normal USB mouse. Would you buy it?
If so, I´m planning to open a Kickstarter campaign. If you like the fourth option also you can let me know if you would be willing to just support me by sharing the files and ordering the materials from affiliated links.

2022.06.04 02:31 SoddenSuzaki1787 Every episode of adventure time season 1

Episode 1: Slumber Party Panic Finn (voiced by Jeremy Shada) and Princess Bubblegum (voiced by Hynden Walch) must protect the Candy Kingdom from a horde of candy zombies they accidentally created and deal with the consequences of breaking a "royal promise." In the end, the two are able to avert the zombie apocalypse. The first fantastic time episode!
Episode 2: "Trouble in Lumpy Space" Finn must travel to Lumpy Space to cure Jake of the lumps after he is bitten by Lumpy Space Princess at Princess Bubblegum's Mallow Tea Ceremony.
The fantastic episode!
Episode 3: "Prisoners of Love" Having discovered that the Ice King (voiced by Tom Kenny) has captured a number of princesses he sees as potential brides, Finn and Jake team up with the prisoners to set everybody free. Badventure time episode!
Episode 4: "Tree Trunks)" Tree Trunks (voiced by Polly Lou Livingston) joins Finn and Jake who go on a quest to fulfill her desire of picking a proposed legendary "crystal gem apple" in an evil forest. The three eventually find the tree, and Tree Trunks eats the apple, only to apparently explode and be transported to a crystal dimension. (May miss Livingston legacy moves on.) Fantastic time episode!
Episode: 5: "The Enchiridion!" Finn and Jake go on a quest for the titular magical book that would prove them worthy of being righteous heroes. After passing through a series of trials and tribulations, Finn acquires the legendary book. (Boi, there are lot of important stuff in every single episode is it?) Well, see you can spot the snail in every episode & see you can find every animation mistakes. Is a fantastic time episode! Also, what’s sup with that ending? (It’s rather Finn hurt himself or someone doesn’t like this show?)
Episode 6: “The Jiggler" A strange creature attracted by Finn's auto-tuned singing voice follows the duo to their home and they keep him as a pet. Soon, however, the creature begins to show signs of sickness, and Finn and Jake realize the creature needs the love and attention of its mother. They then return it to its nest. Is a Bad-venture time episode! (Heck, since when the show does gross-out humor?) Welp, it could’ve been worse. It would’ve dragged the second half out with the gross-out scenes. *Shivering*
Episode 7: "Ricardio the Heart Guy"
Finn believes that Princess Bubblegum's new friend, a literal heart named Ricardio (voiced by George Takei), is evil, and is proven right after learning that Ricardio is the heart of the Ice King. Ricardio reveals that he wants to "make out" with Bubblegum's heart, but he is defeated by Finn and Jake. Fantastic time episode, that face though! This isn’t a kid show, is it?
Episode 8: "Business Time" Finn and Jake fall victim to their own laziness when they delegate their adventuring responsibilities to a group of businessmen they thawed from an iceberg. Eventually, the businessmen's efficiency causes them to become hazards to others, and they are refrozen into an iceberg. The characters quitting or giving up on something which is that their job. Yeah, get use of this trope while it plays out in every episode! Badventure time episode! (Hope, that there another episode where characters are giving up on adventuring.)
Episode 9: "My Two Favorite People" Jake feels overwhelmed at not having enough time for Finn and his girlfriend, Lady Rainicorn (voiced by Niki Yang), so he tries to get them to hang out more. Eventually, Finn and Lady Raincorn become closer than Jake is comfortable with, and he starts feeling jealous. A character boasts about something, whether it's a new date or a song by their favorite musician. When someone else, possibly their friends, complains about that, they respond by accusing them of jealousy. When they do make such a claim, they usually are not jealous and there is good reason for them to be worried. In time, he will find that out the hard way, often to his grief.
This trope can be weakly justified provided that the friend doesn't have any evidence to support their claims, but oftentimes they will have, if not outright evidence, at least a fairly well-reasoned argument that You're Just Jealous simply brushes off.
The first half was that good, middle part was decent & the second half sucks. Most of it just jake being jealous then trying to make both Finn & lady raincorn jealous (what else it’s there To say?) It falls into a meh time category, could’ve been better if it wasn’t have one specific jealous trope. (Just mediocre at best!)
Episode 10: "Memories of Boom Boom Mountain" Finn, motivated by an upsetting experience when he was a baby, tries to reconfirm his desire for helping people out when confronted with one problem after another stemming from a violence-hating mountain.
Is a fantastic episode! (Easily!) We’ll keep on going from there but for now, see you guys in few weeks suzuki out!
