RPDR Randomized Era 4: All Stars 5, Episode 1 (All Star Variety Extravaganza)
Hey RPDR Fantasy lovers!!
It's finally time for our next iteration of All Stars! These have been some of my favorite casts so far because they really all are top tier queens which makes it so hard (for you all haha) to figure out who should be going home week after week. We have seen Trixie Mattel, Manila Luzon, Asia O'Hara and the tie between A'Keria C. Davenport and Rosé! Who will be the queen that joins them in the Hall of Fame!!

The show begins with look back to how the world of All Stars forever changed in Season 2 when RuPaul put the power of elimination in the hands of the queen who won a lip sync for her legacy. It talks about how the show has grown and that now that they have reached their 5th season, it's time to change the rules again.

Then in walks the first queen of All Stars 5...

https://preview.redd.it/egi7ak7v6tzc1.png?width=426&format=png&auto=webp&s=298e148e19e403cf62e98f41750f8c409d726a3b
Bendelacreme is the first queen to enter the werkroom. We see a flashback to her entrance on Season 2. She excitedly enters the werkroom and talks about how much she has gotten into in all the years since Season 2 and that she can't wait to show the world more of her drag.

https://preview.redd.it/l1e5floqwwzc1.png?width=1130&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ce81f99e48551f004f2ec99ba6e7fcf4370bc1a
Ginger Minj, Luxx Noir London, and Laganja Estranja walk in next. Dela is gagged to see her Season 2 sister and runs to hug her. She jokingly asks her if she didn't get enough from being asked to be on All Stars 1 that she had to come and do it again. Luxx walks in looking great and tells the girls that they hope they are ready for what she's bringing because this time she is leaving with the crown. The girls are really happy to see Laganja when she enters the werkroom. Laganja tells the girls that they better be ready to perform next to her to which Ginger jokingly says that Laganja won't be lip syncing this season.
https://preview.redd.it/ysy13ottwwzc1.png?width=1146&format=png&auto=webp&s=0b5659ae0c2189b468e314c6ddff8801fb3252b5
Kylie Sonique Love, Ra'jah D. O'Hara, and Mistress Isabelle Brooks enter the werkroom next. Kylie jokes with the queens about how she came from the most competitive season since the entire final three queens of her season have gone on to win a crown. Ginger and Dela are really excited to see Ra'jah and talk about how it's a reunion of Season 2 and how happy they all are to compete again. Mistress tells the girls that she may have just gotten off her season but they shouldn't underestimate her because this time she will get what she lost out on in Season 11.

https://preview.redd.it/zqm7gla2utzc1.png?width=1146&format=png&auto=webp&s=fffe0b8b1ebe9972be7eec1fcc4351bec7fea764
Symone, Peppermint, and Monet X Change enter the werkroom with Monet arriving into the werkroom last. Symone rushes over to hug Luxx and they talk about how the competition is really on now. Peppermint hugs Ginger and Mistress mentions that they have two queens who are returning All Stars. Kylie asks them both if they think that gives them an advantage to which Peppermint tells them that this is like a new chance for her because she can go at the crown on her own. Monet's entrance shocks everyone as she went home first on Season 6. Kylie jokingly tells Monet that it's nice to meet her to which Monet shares that she has proven that even though she went home first that she is a star and now it's her chance to get another shot at Drag Race and that she is going to fight for that spot in the Hall of Fame.

The queens chat around the table as they talk about how excited they are to be back in the werkroom. Laganja mentions that they are all happy now until the top two queens have to choose one of them to go home. As the queens discuss what is coming their way with this season of All Stars, the werkroom door opens and they are joined by RuPaul!
https://preview.redd.it/k11u777zjuzc1.jpg?width=2322&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f64c6b95f4052e034de255b572e3c97719d6c8e8
RuPaul welcomes them all to the new season of All Stars. She goes on to say that in order to win this season it won't be enough to just win challenges and that they also will need to win over their fellow queens. Ru goes on to say that for this season, they will be doing things a little differently and that with the new game comes new rules. We see the other queens looking around confusedly. RuPaul then elaborates that for the first time in All Stars herstory, it won't just be the top All Star voting for who will be eliminated but that each week EACH queen will cast a vote for the queen in the bottom that they think should go home.

RuPaul then says that they will learn more about the Rumocracy later. She then says that it is time for their first All Star mini challenge and tells them the library is officially open! RuPaul calls the Pit Crew out and the queens are surprised to see they are actually joined by Ricky Martin!
https://preview.redd.it/gy3lqrruruzc1.jpg?width=2658&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f59c1e4b455320e67ac3e926d269d8d37d3f491c
Ricky Martin then reads Ru in Spanish and they exchange comedic slaps before Ru invites all the queens to read each other for their very first mini challenge of All Stars.

The All Stars all take turns going through their reads. There are some real hilarious reads as the queens take their turns. Luxx, Ginger, Symone, Monet, Dela and Peppermint all deliver hilarious reads. Ra'jah and Laganja don't bomb the mini challenge but they definitely aren't as successful as the other girls. At the end of the reading challenge RuPaul and Ricky Martin announce that...

It's a tie!

The winners of the reading challenge are...

Bendelacreme and Ginger Minj!
RuPaul then tells the queens that for this weeks maxi challenge they will be headlining in the Werq the World Variety Show where they each will have a chance to showcase their showstopping talent.

Following this RuPaul and Ricky leaves the queens to begin preparing for the challenge

VARIETY SHOW PREPARATION
The queens are all break out into the werkroom to start unpacking and dedragging.
https://preview.redd.it/bj6q4pdv2vzc1.png?width=432&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c5a94ed0d514500f963fc9618467afc567be1a1
In her confessional, Ra'jah talks about how they have switched the game up on them and now they have to be a little more creative if they want to make it to the end.

Ra'jah talks with Ginger and Dela about the change to the rules. She mentions that it is going to be really important for all the queens to pay attention to how others are playing the game. Ginger agrees and adds that it'll be hard to tell if queens are going to play fairly or just eliminate someone that they don't like. Dela mentions that for her she feels like she will be voting based on the queen that should go home because she doesn't want to play a dirty game at all.

We also see Kylie, Monet and Laganja talking about how things still aren't all the way explained. Laganja talks about how it's clear that now everyone gets a vote which throws a wrench into how the game could be played especially when there's fewer and fewer girls. Monet then chimes in and talks about how there doesn't seem to be an explanation on how the lip syncs are going to work. Kylie agrees and says that it'll have to be a different lip sync situation this season because how would all the votes play in if there are still two queens lip syncing for their legacy.
https://preview.redd.it/d54zcevq6vzc1.png?width=426&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e270e51606c948025b5bbc611b94e53f78cf9f6
In her confessional, Kylie jokingly talks about how she may not be the best at math, but she can tell that something isn't adding up about the Rumocracy.

As the queens start getting ready for the Variety Show we get to hear some discussions in front of the mirrors. Symone asks the girls what they plan on doing for the Talent Show to which Luxx mentions that she will be performing her original song. Ginger asks her if she's going to be singing live like she is to which Luxx says she isn't. Monet also mentions that she is going to do her performance live since she has a background in opera. Peppermint then snaps her head around and mentions that she also will be singing and then says that she hopes this isn't turning out to be a concert. Laganja jokingly says that if they cast a lot of queens that can sing then it's to be expected. She goes on to suggest that she hopes they all have something that is going to make them stand out against the other queens in the competition.

ON THE MAIN STAGE
RuPaul takes to the the runway and introduces the main judges, Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, and Ross Mathews. Ru then gives an introduction to the extra special guest judge for the week Ricky Martin! She goes on to explain that for the challenge this week the all stars will be showing off their Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent in a Werq the World Variety Show Extravaganza!
https://preview.redd.it/tswtebd30wzc1.jpg?width=2381&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=75c875d6a181433a7a955c3439c8bfb4f80ff784
The queens all take to the stage to perform their individual variety show acts.
https://preview.redd.it/mgg79btp0wzc1.jpg?width=2640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=541f0723fc1783535b9814269f6d22dfd394571f
Symone is the first queen to perform. She performs a dance number over a lip sync track and a couple of reveals. Ra'jah O'Hara follows and miraculously sews a complete dress in just a minute that turns out really well. Mistress Isabelle Brooks is up next as she performs an original song with comedic elements and her signature boob bounce. Peppermint then takes to the stage and performs one of her original songs, making full use of the fans and a ton of background dancers. Laganja Estranja follows with a killer dance performance full of stunts and splits over her rap track. Monet X Change then follows with her live singing performance where her voice cracks at the very beginning of the number. Ginger Minj follows, also singing live, though her performance is much slower in tempo and doesn't involve dancing. Luxx Noir London is the next queen on the stage and she also performs her original song with the dancers and her fanography. Bendelacreme follows and performs a comedic burlesque number where she repeatedly removes her bras to show . Kylie Sonique Love then closes the show and performs another original song where so looks great and sparkles across the stage.

JUDGING
With the All Stars back on stage, RuPaul explains that All Stars rules are suspended indefinitely! She goes on to say that eliminations will happen differently this season and that each week she will pick ONE top All Star instead of two. Ru explains that the top All Star will choose the lip stick of the queen she thinks should be eliminated just as the rest of the queens will choose lip sticks. Following this, the top All Star will lip sync against a secret lip sync assassin! If the top All Star wins the lip sync she will win a cash prize of $10,000 and the power to eliminate one of the bottom queens. If she does not win the lip sync, the lip sync assassin will then reveal the group's choice for the queen who will be eliminated.

In her confessional, Mistress jokingly says that it is starting to feel like she's on Survivor while being in drag and she's ready for it.

Following this RuPaul announces that Symone, Kylie Sonique Love, Luxx Noir London, and Mistress Isabelle Brooks are all safe and may go backstage to untuck.

The critiques then begin.
https://preview.redd.it/pothx8jv5wzc1.jpg?width=2668&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df6ac97554c59d3bb255a869e41033026b48b833
Michelle starts with Ra'jah and tells her that she is happy to see her back on stage and that she showed tonight that there is more to her than they may think which is exactly what the queens should be bringing to All Stars. Carson agrees. He goes on to say that her performance was inventive, and really showed a true talent and how much he enjoyed watching it.

Ross then tells Peppermint that she has a lovely voice but that so many of the queens on this season can also sing so if you are going to go that route you have to be showstopping and he thinks there was more she could've done with her performance. RuPaul says that she knows how talented Peppermint is and that is the level she wanted her to bring to the stage tonight and she doesn't want to see her holding back because that's how a queen would get sent home in All Stars.

Carson moves on to Laganja and tells her that she had a performance that no one could forget. He tells her that he was gagged from start to finish and every time he thought she wouldn't do more she just went and raised the envelope. Ricky Martin tells her that she came out and took the air out the room. He goes on to say how amazing she is to watch and that she is truly captivating.

Michelle then talks with Monet and tells her that she had a tough position to follow Laganja and unfortunately her performance didn't stack up. She goes on to say that it was a poor choice to sing live because any mishap throws it all off. Ricky Martin tells Monet that he can tell she has a lovely voice but that it wasn't on it's best display in the performance for the night.

Ross then talks with Ginger and tells her that she sounded great in her performance but that she suffered from performing at a point in the show when there were already so many amazing vocal performances or performances that involved songs and hers didn't pack as much of a punch as the others. RuPaul tells her that she thinks she has an amazing singing voice and that she loved hearing it. She then gives her the feedback that she should ensure her stage looks match how stellar she is as a queen.

Carson ends the critiques with Dela and tells her that she is a smart queen and displayed that genius through a truly hilarious and ridiculous performance. He ends by telling her he loved every minute of it. Michelle agrees and says that she didn't realize how much she missed seeing her on stage and that she thinks she knocked it out the park tonight.

Following the critiques RuPaul announces that she has made her decisions.

Ru goes on to announce that...

https://preview.redd.it/dvcuoe3z9wzc1.png?width=388&format=png&auto=webp&s=1a732ce15ce473526725703772fdfb1e38dd6726
Laganja Estranja is the top All Star the week!

RuPaul then tells Monet X Change and Ginger Minj that they are the bottom two queens of the week and are up for elimination.
https://preview.redd.it/6cse1p47awzc1.png?width=686&format=png&auto=webp&s=2cfe67102674e5f335a7bfd1da138b5b13dda4df

RuPaul then releases all the queens to the back to begin their deliberations.

DELIBERATIONS
The queens all return to the werkroom to begin their deliberations.
https://preview.redd.it/59xthhaiawzc1.png?width=428&format=png&auto=webp&s=54d27cced9b5a1df8b8bb64e6d806e63f5dd2149
In her confessional, Monet mentions how she is in a state of disbelief and that she came back to All Stars for a chance to really show what she can do and it's like Season 6 all over again where she is in the bottom week 1.

When the queens reenter the werkroom to join Symone, Luxx, Mistress and Kylie, Mistress mentions that she has a guess for how things went out there based on the looks on some of the queens' faces. Ra'jah announces that Laganja won the challenge and the other queens congratulate her. Symone tells her that she was really blown away by Laganja's performance and that she thinks she really deserved it. Dela then tells the queens that both Monet and Ginger are in the bottom two this week. Peppermint chimes up to say that she really thought Ginger did a great job but that it's a testament to the level of talent this season for the criteria the judges are going to have to use to make their decisions. Laganja then tells both Monet and Ginger that she would like to speak with them one on one and takes Ginger off to the side first.

After Laganja leaves with Ginger, Monet talks with the girls about why she feels like she should stay in the competition. She brings up how Ginger has already been on the show before and had a chance to show what she is made of and this is her second shot at All Stars while Monet hasn't gotten any chances to come back or show growth outside of this one. Peppermint tells her that she knows how strong of a performer Monet and mentions that she doesn't think she fully brought that to the stage tonight. She adds that she wonders if Monet is in her head at all after seeing the queens she's up against this season. Monet disagrees and says that she knows she can bring it just like the rest of them and that she just hopes that they all see the fight in her to really show her drag this time around and that they decide to keep her. Ginger talks to Laganja about how she felt like Monet was the only queen who bombed the challenge tonight and that even the judges mentioned how well both she and Peppermint did and that she thinks it should be taken into consideration that she is only in the bottom out of circumstance not necessarily because she did as poorly as Monet did.

Monet is then shown explaining some of the same sentiments to Laganja. Laganja asks her if she thinks her performance was stronger than Ginger's to which Monet agrees and says that even though she had a rough night that she still showed that she can be a magnetic performer whereas Ginger didn't really show that. Ginger sits down with the other queens to talk through why she should stay in the competition. Ginger shares that she feels she has more to show than Monet does and that her staying in the competition will prove to make it a more entertaining experience for everyone. She goes on to mention that Monet went home first on her season and came back to All Stars to show her more glowed up version of herself only to be the only queen to not deliver. Ra'jah then mentions to Ginger that she went home first on All Stars 1 to which Ginger says that was a different ball game because you had to pull the weight of yourself and another queen.
https://preview.redd.it/cje928hknwzc1.png?width=424&format=png&auto=webp&s=979448a485856f3bb3681be6fa84a15bb19ad113
In her confessional, Ginger talks about how she really didn't see things going this way for her but that she hopes the girls know that she has way more fight left in her and that just because the fat lady sang that doesn't mean it's over.

We then see all the queens going to the voting booth to cast their votes for who should be eliminated. At last we see Laganja walking up to the mirror and deciding which of the bottom queens she will eliminate if she wins her lip sync.
https://preview.redd.it/lt1hdivvnwzc1.png?width=424&format=png&auto=webp&s=2913b1372db5e3fb6f3c1abea603fd112afc8807
In her confessional, Laganja talks about how she hopes that the other girls know that it isn't personal that it's just drag. She goes on to say that someone is always going to be the first one to go home and it's going to suck no matter who's lip stick she chooses.

BACK ON THE MAIN STAGE
The queens are back on the main stage. The other queens are seated to the side while Laganja is on stage awaiting her performance. Ru tells the girls that if they plan to join the ranks of the Hall of Fame, they will need to persevere no matter what or who fate throws their way. She then says it's time to meet this week's lip sync assassin...

RUVEAL YOURSELF!!

The lip sync assassin is...

Sasha Colby, Winner of Season 9!!
https://preview.redd.it/0n53vdxmowzc1.png?width=418&format=png&auto=webp&s=d56ed7448619056f90f23285512214803e9826a5
RuPaul welcomes Sasha Colby back and says that it is always wonderful to see her. She then explains that Sasha holds the lip stick of the queen the group has chosen to get the chop. RuPaul then announces that two queens stand before her. She tells Laganja that this is her chance to impress her, win $10,000, and earn the power to give one of the bottom queens the chop.

The time has come to lip sync for your legacy!
https://preview.redd.it/rway6ke70vzc1.png?width=1264&format=png&auto=webp&s=ef80986b748e99b7a02697c523f55dd68c1d23a4

Good luck and don't FUCK it up!

The lip sync song Livin La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin then starts playing and the queens are poised to put on a show! The performances are high energy and just jaw-dropping. We see hairography, reveals, splits, dips, and flips. Neither queen is leaving breathing room for the other! Laganja comes alive with her performance and is hungry for her win while Sasha just exudes true drag prowess as she pulls focus and drives home the fact that she is your drag queen's favorite drag queen. It is such a good lip sync! All the girls off to the side are gagged and fully entertained!

The lip sync ends and RuPaul announces...

Sasha Colby... you're a winner baby!
She goes on to announce that the cash tip of $10,000 will roll over to next week's tip. We see the queens all look gagged to hear this. Ru then tells Laganja that she is safe and may step to the back of the stage.

She then asks the bottom queens to step forward.

She tells Sasha Colby that with great power comes great responsibility. She asks her which queen has the group chosen to get the chop.

Sasha Colby first thanks Ru for bringing her back and then turns to Laganja and tells her that she would share a stage with her any time. Sasha then reaches into her garment to reveal that the group has chosen to send home...

\"Ginger Minj\"
Ginger looks gutted. She turns and hugs Monet.
As it is written, so shall it be done....

Ginger Minj... sashay away.

The queens clap for Ginger as she departs the main stage.

9 Queens Remain...

Do not insure items through your
I made a post a few days ago about not getting any insured items back and the responses were making me feel crazy so I did some testing.
In the trade room kiosk, under the "favorites" tab, you can check an "ADD INSURANCE" box on any item with a drop-down menu (i.e. pre kitted weapons and armor). I've been doing this the past week and never got one thing back out of dozens of kits.
The test: I purchased an A22 rig through my favorites tab, insured, a ruger mag via favorites tab, and a spoon insured via market kiosk. I died in raid with all said items in the ocean on island.
I logged in today, and BEHOLD! The spoon survives.
I've blown 10k+ on insurance through the trade room kiosk, which sucks. So don't do it!!!

2024.05.12 01:43 Practical_Bat_2680 Adding major after 2 years. Should I do Engineering or Physics if I want to work in aerospace?

I've been an economics major for the past 2 years but now I'm deciding I want to pursue aerospace engineering - I know, big switch - but I also want to finish my econ major since I'm close to completing it and I still am interested in it.
My options are either to add an engineering major (either Aero or MechE) which would likely make my total UG >5.5 years (and I would probably have to drop economics) or add a physics major that I could finish with Econ in 5 years.
My biggest considerations are how long it would take (I'm fine with 5 years but going over that is starting to push it) vs the career benefits. I know physics majors often get passed over for engineering internships because they don't have the "engineering mindset" but I would definitely take classes in CAD/technical skills or even learn them myself because I want to get actual engineering internship experience. I'm also probably going to want a master's so that might factor into the equation as well. Keeping the econ major would be nice too because I think the combo gives me a lot of options and skills to take with me.
Thank you engineers of reddit

A Speedrunner's Guide to Bruce Brown - And What Can Be Done on Draft Night (Part 1)
The only thing more underwhelming that the Pascal Siakam trade has been the discussion surrounding it, full stop.
While there's certainly a discussion to be had about how the assets they've obtained have been used - the Ochai Agbaji/Kelly Olynyk trade with the Jazz is a homerun given the front office only gave up a bottom 3 pick in a draft executives have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the prospect - the package of Bruce Brown, Jordan Nwora, Kira Lewis and 3 firsts - two of which were protected (The Pacers picks are Top 3 and Top 4 protected, though the former will convey at 19th in the 2024 NBA draft) - gave the Raptors neither a prospect one could expect to develop into a starter in the immediate future.
We all know this, we've all talked about this, it's been done to death and the fact that two of those first rounders came from a draft class the Raptors felt comfortable trading out of via a lightly protected first-rounder last season to acquire Jakob Poeltl speaks well enough for the strange sequence of events that culminated in the exit of a player who expected to be a Raptor for life.
Equally drawn out - but more relevant as the draft fast approaches - has been the discussion of the main piece of salary that came back from Indiana, NBA champion Bruce Brown.
Initially seen as a trade piece to potentially bolster the return one got for Pascal, Brown has been underwhelming as a depth piece and simultaneously was not moved at the trade deadline for the Raptors asking price of a first round pick or a young player. While the former can be attributed to a knee injury, the fact remains that Toronto didn't get what they were hoping for at the deadline and a down year from the supporting player has only served to complicate getting that 1st rounder the Raptors were so adamant to acquire.
Diminished or not, there is value to be had for Bruce Brown, albeit for different reasons than his on-court contributions. The 2024 free agency class is a weak one, and while there are a few interesting players who could make for interesting bench additions before one has to worry about the cap impact of Scottie's presumed max extension, ultimately there aren't any standouts for upgrading the team's point of needs. Sure, Jalen Smith would be a nice bench big addition but he's not going to move the needle from play-in territory to surefire playoff seed.
Whether or not his play has affected his value as a contributor to a playoff team's front office, Bruce Brown does have some value as salary relief for a team at or near the first apron - and a few of them just happen to be around the late lottery or have a future 1st to part with. While Brown alone might not be enough to secure a first rounder, it is possible he could be moved with the Pacers pick to move up in the draft to go after a player the Raptors are interested in (It's been frequently mentioned that Masai was spotted scouting Tidjane Salaun though that doesn't necessarily mean anything; he was also spotted scouting Ismael Kamagate in 2022 yet we went with Christian Koloko) but may not fall to 19. That's obviously not the same value as getting a 1st but it is useful, and depending on the incoming salary they get in return, they could find themselves a cheap fix for the current roster's many flaws via a "distressed asset" a la RJ Barrett; the future point guard and current center positions are locked up but while RJ and Scottie will continue to start, it's up in the air where 2-thru-4 they'll be and who'll take the last position, doubly so with Trent Jr.'s extension is seemingly dead in the water.
In part 1, we'll go over three of the teams that might make for a trade partner to move up from the Raptors current pick situation.

Chicago Bulls

https://preview.redd.it/g4ppml85krzc1.png?width=784&format=png&auto=webp&s=faf5335b01aeed5379977057b25e708d8a16183a
Most likely player(s): Lonzo Ball
2021/22 Stats: 13 points, 5.4 rebounds, 5.1 assists 42.3% FG, 42.3% 3P, 75% FT
Incoming salary: $21.3 million (Net of -1.6 million)
Pick(s) available: 11th pick in 2024 draft, future 1st from Blazers (Lottery protected thru 2028)
Quick note before going forward: While there may be instances where I list multiple picks from a given team, it's altogether unrealistic to expect more than 1 being exchanged unless it's a case where the Raptors are trading down for for two picks in this draft, say, they move from 19th to 22nd and 23rd this year in a similar fashion to what the Grizzlies did in the 2022 NBA draft. However, given the Raptors already traded the worst of the 2 1st rounders they acquired in this draft, I don't think they'll add another draftee unless someone on their board falls to a position they'd feel comfortable making a deal for.
Anyway, this is perhaps the most obvious suggestion if one operates under the assumption that the Bulls will live up to their namesake with the profound stubbornness and refusal to rebuild they've displayed over the past few years. Assuming they bring back DeMar, Chicago seems poised to at the very least run it back - if only so they don't give up a valuable pick they owe to the Spurs (Top 10 protected) in 2025 - and they have a very obvious player to attach/dump with their pick.
Unlike other names that will come up, it almost feels pointless to discuss Lonzo Ball as a player because he hasn't played in over 2 years. The once-promising point guard has been on a lengthy recovery timeline and while there's been some talk of him making a return next season, there's zero certainty that the same Ball which had the Bulls as a 1 seed back in 2021/22 will be the one hitting the hardwood. It's not impossible that he'll return like nothing happened but the most likely scenario is whomever is holding Lonzo's Bird Rights by the 2025 offseason will end up waiving them or buying him out.
With the rise of Coby White - a point guard who, quite frankly, should have won MIP over Maxey - and Ayo Dosunmu improving in his own right as a capable backup point, Chicago has all the reason to rid themselves of Lonzo's not insignificant portion of the team's cap if they plan on making their mandatory play-in appearance. Brown would give them a depth piece off the bench that can contribute right now while still keeping that alleviation an expiring contract grants their increasingly complicated salary concerns with DeMar poised for a pricey new contract (Ironically, the Bulls trading Lonzo for Brown would increase their payroll by around $1.6 million but I digress).
Heck, if the Bulls try to run it back but find themselves ready to embrace the rebuild they should have at last year's deadline - it isn't altogether difficult for them to meet the requirements to hit on their pick's protections in 2025 - they can likely recoup some value via moving Brown at the 2025 deadline or earlier on the season should they decide to #RaisetheFlagg early.
So yeah, Lonzo and the 11th for Bruce Brown and 19th.
Maybe they expand this into a 3/4 team deal involving Zach Lavine being sent to another team and reroute something to Toronto.
Maybe Toronto turns that 11th pick in to the 2025 first that the Raptors reportedly wanted at the deadline and merely select in the Top 6 (if they keep their pick) and 31st.
Maybe you wrap in a Boucher deal in to this or Chris ends up in Chicago as well.
Maybe you opt for the Blazers future 1st (which is heavily protected until 2028 so...maybe not).
Maybe you try and call the Spurs to see if giving that pick will let them change the protections on Toronto's owed pick (I doubt they give back pick control outright for the 11th pick in this draft).
Point is, there's a lot of options but as far as frameworks/trade partners go, they're a very obvious one and it makes sense for both parties if the Bulls do decide to run it back against all good judgement...the key word being "if".
The one complicating factor in all of this is the Bulls might not want nor be able to keep DeMar at the price tag/years he's seeking. Fit concerns and faux contender status aside, the 76ers are a preferable scenario compared to the Bulls as a playoff team and it's easy to see a world in which Philadelphia adds a new albatross contract to replace Tobias Harris' with via an aging, albeit still very productive on offense, DeMar DeRozan.
With his extension status up in the air, it's entirely possible he'll hit free agency and walk, leaving the Bulls with an absolute nightmare of an offseason to navigate with Zach LaVine likely on the bloc with no one wanting him.
Whether or not LaVine is on the move on draft night in his own right is an open question. Chicago has a lot of question marks of their own heading in to the draft but the same cannot necessarily be said for the next team...

Most likely player(s): John Collins
2023/24 Stats: 15.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists 53.2% FG\37.1% 3P\79.5% FT
Incoming salary: $26.6 million (Net increase 3.6 million), 3 years 2 + 1 player option
Pick(s) available: 8th pick in 2024 draft (if owned after the 2024 lottery their pick does not drop to 10), 2025 Timberwolves/Cavaliers 1st
Let me pull out a tin foil cap and offer you a theory: I think that the Ochai Agbaji/Kelly Olynyk trade started out as a potential John Collins/Bruce Brown swap to get the Mormon state's team to save a bit of money in the short-term & a lot of money in the long-term while simultaneously filling in a backcourt hole the trading of O.G. and Pascal opened up. Presumably, this began under the goal of getting that 2025 1st Masai and co. were aiming for but whatever the behind the scene specifics, that's not the trade we ended up with.
Owed to Collins having a pretty lengthy contract and him fitting a position of need for the Raptors, albeit with a pretty large asterisk that we'll touch on in a moment, John fit the mold for the buy-low "distressed asset" player that Masai Ujiri has sought out such as the aforementioned RJ Barrett acquisition who has seen a paradigm shift in both production and player reputation since playing for the Raptors.
I've talked about Collins before when his name kept cropping up in the 2023 trade rumors at the deadline, as well as when the Hawks were looking to trade for Pascal Siakam; at the time, John or fellow frequently rumored Hawks player De'Andre Hunter were seen as the main piece of salary. If you want a longer explanation then by all means go ahead and read it but the short version is that it was very easy to turn down a deal where Collins was the centerpiece for Pascal, even if John Collins is perfectly capable as an NBA forward.
After being traded to the Jazz for pennies on the dollar and failing to rehab his overall value to be flipped by known fleecer Danny Ainge, Collins name has found his way back in the rumor mill with the Jazz trying to get rid of him, owed largely to their frustration with the former Hawks forward.
In a vacuum, John Collins does fill the role of a stretch 4 or a small ball 5...sort of. The problem is that John Collins, while a decent player overall, is a positionally confusing one on defense. A great finisher and lob threat on offense, he isn't fast enough to guard most 3s and 4s on defense, and he lacks the size to be a full-time option for a small ball 5 a la the similarly short (Both are 6'9) Bam Adebayo. His shooting has rebounded from a career-low 29% in his final season with the Hawks (owed largely due to a finger injury that should not be viewed for the faint of heart) to more in line with his career average, Collins days with the Jazz have seen him boasting a 37% 3-point percentage on around 3 attempts per game.
And yet, that optimistic turnaround doesn't extend to the season Collins had overall. Yes, he's staying close to his career averages for shooting, rebounding, etc. but that's despite greater opportunity being afforded to him.
That is in of itself part of the problem; the Jazz are in a rebuild where, aside from Lauri Markkanen, no one on the team is guaranteed to be part of their future, and even Lauri has had rumors chasing him ever since January. The door is wide open for anyone to rise up and become a franchise piece, and there's plenty of young talent to give a run for.
It's a prime environment for John Collins to showcase why he was once seen as a rising star like he did in Atlanta during games where Trae Young was out and yet...his tenure in Utah has only served to reinforce the notion that John Collins is who he is, and he's not going to improve much from where he is as a player right now.
The player Collins is right now and will be for the duration of his current contract is not a bad one, but they are overpaid relative to their production; Collins is being paid roughly $25 million on average with a player option in the 3rd year of his contract so while he won't be the worst placeholder one could have for a big man, the amount of cap they do take up will require any team that takes on his money to carefully build around the margins under the new CBA.
The other "trades don't exist in a vacuum" caveat with a Jollins/Brown swap is that...look, the Raptors want some form of draft capital, whether it's moving up in the draft, picking up a 2nd 1st later in the draft or, preferably, a 1st in the 2025 draft. The Jazz do have a pick in this draft but it may be a bit too far out of reach to jump up to via a simple salary dump.
Going from 19 to the late lottery a la the above Bulls suggestion or the third team we'll talk about is a viable option if the Raptors are trading Brown to grant a team short or long-term salary relief/turning dead salary into a rotation player. The Mavericks did this very same thing last year when they dumped Davis Bertan contract on to the Thunder while still acquiring the player they originally wanted in Dereck Lively II. Granted, they only dropped from 10th to 12th but I digress.
Going in to the middle of the lottery from 19 is a significantly higher jump to make. The Jazz do have an interesting 2nd coming their way via the Wizards and no shortage of future picks from the Timberwolves and the Cavaliers though how heavily protected one of them would be were the Jazz to part ways with said pick, and whether the Raptors would be willing to trade out of this draft's 1st round should they lose their own pick to the Spurs (roughly a 55% chance to occur) is up in the air.
It is worth mentioning that if the Raptors keep their pick at 4 or 6 and expect the player we want to draft in that range to still be on the board by 8th, then perhaps an 6 + Brown for 8 + Collins + a future first from the Wolves/Cavs might be an option. Otherwise, it's hard to see the Raptors moving up in the first round for this draft via a trade with Utah.
It should also be noted that there is a possibility the Jazz lose their pick to the Thunder, as it's 8th pre-lottery with a Top 10 protection. If it drops to 11 then it will convey to OKC.
There's one other reason why a trade with Utah is less likely: Recency. Teams rarely make trades with the same partner in what is effectively the same season and the Jazz have done just that via the frequently mentioned Ochai/Olynyk trade.. Exceptions exist but the fact that the two already did so does make it much less likely that they'll be trade partners in the upcoming draft.
Then again, sometimes trades that died in the offseason or deadline use the previously declined deal as a framework for a deal that does end up happening; the Lakers and Pelicans re-engaged trade talks after failing to acquire Anthony Davis in 2019. Lo and behold, New Orleans traded away the All-NBA big man for a haul and a half that the Lakers are still on the hook for - and they might still be if the Pelicans defer their owed Lakers pick to 2025.
Speaking of teams with prior trade talks to Toronto...

Atlanta Hawks

https://preview.redd.it/t4ki5qlhkrzc1.png?width=720&format=png&auto=webp&s=e17febaa7a100d69c6155daacab6324b9e528b14
Most likely player(s): De'Andre Hunter
2023/24 Stats: 15.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists 45.9% FG\38.5% 3P\84.7% FT
Incoming salary: $21.7 million (Net of -$1.3 million for the 1st year)
Pick(s) available: 10th pick in 2024 draft, 2025 Kings 1st
Entering a cap crunch with Okongwu's extension kicking in alongside Dejounte Murray, Atlanta is already poised to make some significant changes in the offseason, with De'Andre Hunter and his overall stagnation, in conjunction with Jalen Johnson's rise despite an overall poor season for the Hawks, being a major turning point for the franchise.
I've talked about Hunter before when the Hawks were heavily rumored to be offering him and draft capital for Pascal Siakam. Not Kobe Bufkin, who was off-limits per the reports but I digress. If you want the long version of what was said about De'Andre then you can give it a read here. The short version? Hunter came in to the 2023/24 season with the reputation of being an average starter on an okay, albeit slightly overpaid given current production, contract and thus he seemed like potential insurance in the off-chance O.G. Anunoby left or someone to flip to another team.
Lo and behold, the Raptors eliminated that possibility of him walking by trading O.G. in the thus far Quickley/Barrett 1-2 punch knockout of a trade, leaving the team with newfound optimism - and a massive hole in their wing/forward rotation so Hunter seems like a perfect buy-low candidate, right?
Well, let's talk about how bad of a season Hunter had and why he left the 2023/24 season with the reputation of having the worst contract on the Hawks roster. Whatever else you can say about Collins, he's off the books in 2026, 2025 if he declines his player option. Hunter is there until 2027 with no chances of an inflated ego causing him to enter early in to free agency.
To start, part of the reason that the reception for Hunter's extension was so mixed was a lack of progress on either end of the floor since the 2022 playoff series between the Hawks and the Heat that earned him so significant a payday. In it, De'Andre flashed signs of the two-way wing he could be; he shot 46% on 5 3s a game and played solid defense throughout the 5 game series. The Kawhi comparisons were overblown but reaching the level of, say, a Mikal Bridges where they're a solid connecting piece who can start on a playoff team seemed like a viable outcome.
https://preview.redd.it/2yoju8djkrzc1.png?width=1580&format=png&auto=webp&s=17c826cf2678dde05d30a7a7af13dce3c79cc292
This version of Hunter has not appeared since. How much one wants to blame injury on his lack of progress - he's missed a lot of games due to various injuries - the fact of the matter is his limited offensive game hasn't developed whatsoever, his defensive effort lacks consistency and worst of all, his 2023 offseason revealed that he "hadn't worked on anything".
Admittedly that last one was him trying to joke but it was a joke that reflected the altogether underwhelming tenure that was their latest season where, yet again, Hunter failed to show any signs of improvement while the far less experienced Jalen Johnson flourished. He's the Deandre Ayton of wings; a physically gifted player physically but with a low motor to improve their game or in general play with a consistent level of energy. A change of scenery can do wonders for a player but unlike the aforementioned Ayton, Hunter's ceiling is significantly lower and with an extra year on his contract that makes them similarly expensive for a pseudo starter like Hunter.
Whereas Lonzo is more or less filler to make the deal work and John Collins is an actual NBA player on a bad deal, Hunter is decidedly more frustrating. They're a positional fit on paper but in execution, they're a quietly poor contract for a player that has disappointed year after year. It's no exaggeration to say that De'Andre's mundane performance since his extension is a notable reason why the Hawks have struggled in recent years.
Speaking of Atlanta, the Hawks are in an odd position regarding salary relief, for two reasons.
One is that their own pick, currently 10th in the draft, might be more valued internally by the Hawks than an opportunity to rid themselves of Hunter's albatross of a contract, as this will be the last first round pick they stand to control for several years due to the disastrous Dejounte trade. While there isn't an obvious player in their range to fix their many roster issues, young talent for a team that may be contemplating trading Trae Young is young talent to keep around in this hypothetical rebuild around Jalen Johnson.
So yeah, the Hawks might not be planning to move their pick on draft night. Atlanta does have a very early 2nd from the Blazers (34th overall) and a protected pick from the Kings that has since been deferred to 2025. The protections on said pick have gone from lottery protected to Top 12 (Top 10 if it doesn't convey in 2025) so it's not as though there isn't an opportunity to acquire future draft capital and that second could make for an interesting option to trade out in to the 2nd round of next year's trade as Toronto lacks any picks for the 2025 draft if their own defers.
Depending on what Sacramento does - or doesn't do - and with the West being the bloodbath it was this season, it might be preferable to bet against Sacramento for reasons we'll cover in Part 2 (Spoilers: It'll be framed around Huerter who's been terrible ever since the Kings playoff appearance) though by that same logic, the Hawks may prefer holding on to that first-rounder due its potential value in the 2025 draft though how much better next year's draft will be outside of the top-end talent is too early to say.
The other factor is that while they are an over-the-tax team looking at the luxury tax in the 2025 season with Jalen Johnson breaking out at just the right time to demand a hefty extension, Atlanta has a massive trade exception from the John Collins trade that they can also use to take on a bad contract or potentially make use of the Kings 2025 1st they own to bring in more help around Young and whomever they trade Murray for in the scenario where they try to build around Trae instead of kicking off a rebuild.
Will they do that? It's hard to say. Unlike the Bulls who should be rebuilding but are likely running it back after they find LaVine a new team, the Hawks aren't in a position to rebuild due to the Spurs having their picks/pick control for the next few years so they aren't incentivized to be a bad team. Most of the time, trade exceptions don't get used (See: The massive trade exception the Raptors generated for sign and trading Chris Bosh) so it wouldn't be a surprise if that same thing happens to the Collins expectation.
On the other hand, it's equally difficult to see them getting a player good enough to lift them out of the ditch they're stuck in - for those wondering Bruce Brown's exception does fit in neatly for said exception and a HunteBrown trade would create a new trade exception for Atlanta - and thus avenues for trading what few assets Atlanta may be willing to part with become a lot less appealing.
That getting rid of Hunter's contract by moving down a few spots in the lottery is seen as a positive outcome for their draft day moves should speak volumes about how unenviable a position the Hawks are in. Little room for internal improvement and even less options to retool their roster, low optimism due to a potential cap crunch and no pick control until 2028.
But hey, it was worth keeping Kobe Bufkin over trading him for Siakam, right Atlanta?

Conclusion

For those that want a TL;DR for the first 3 teams, see the below chart:
Team Player(s) Years left on contract Pick(s) [Assuming position stays if in the lottery] Incoming salary (2024) Net salary added to the Raptors (2024)
Chicago Bulls Lonzo Ball 1; player option in 2024/25 11th, 2025 Blazers 1st $21.3 million -1.6$ million
Atlanta Hawks De'Andre Hunter 3 10th, 2025 Kings 1st $21.7 million -$1.3 million
Utah Jazz John Collins 2; player option in 2025/26 8th (Only an option if we keep our 1st), 2025 Timberwolves/Cavaliers 1st $26.6 million +$3.6 million
There are more teams to talk about that we'll add to the chart but I think it's best to wait and see who lands where in the lottery - and whether we'll keep our pick or not - before we continue.
That's all for now. Until next time, game on my friends.

2024.05.11 22:07 currentfso Foreign Service Super FAQ

This is third version of an FAQ first posted several years ago by u/watts52 . The second version, posted by u/brassage is here. The primary changes have been to update links that have changed or are no longer active, and to add a few more resources and recent threads on the existing topics. Primary credit goes to u/watts52, the original poster.
This FAQ covers many common topics discussed on foreignservice . All answers have been pulled from public sources and without any information covered by NDA. Error reports, additions, and clarifications welcome in the comments. (Last update 11 May 2024)

Foreign Service Super FAQ

  1. How do I become a diplomat? How do I work in the foreign service? The best place to learn about this is in the Careers Section of the State Department website. Start here.
  2. What are the differences among FSO, FSS, LNA, CF, CS, and EFM?
  1. Is the Foreign Service the same thing as the State Department? No, the State Department consists of the foreign service (employees who are typically overseas) and the civil service (all other employees who are typically serving in DC). In addition, the term "foreign service" may also include:
  1. Where can I find answers to nearly any question I might have about getting in to the foreign service?
  1. Why should I consider the foreign service? Why not?
FSO Career Tracks / Cones
  1. Which cone is the best fit for me? Take the Career Track Quiz to find out. It's really important for you to pick a track that you have a passion for.
  2. What are the differences among the cones? How do I choose a cone?
  1. Which cone gives me the best chance of getting in? Which cones are hiring the most people right now? It depends on your background and your own desires and motivations, and it depends on the needs of the service. Even if we could tell you which cones are hiring the most people now, the hiring process can take one to three years and things may be different by the time you are eligible to receive a job offer. Do not make the mistake of choosing a cone based on what you think your "chances" are. Too many people make this mistake. If you choose a cone this way, you will probably find yourself in a job you dislike, and you'll have wasted a lot of time and energy "getting in" and you'll be looking for a way to be "getting out." Further discussion here...
  2. Can I change cones? Would it be a good idea to come in as a Consular Officer and later switch to a Political Officer? In theory it's possible to change cones. In practice, it's difficult to do so, and you shouldn't plan on it. Some discussion here.
  3. Can I choose one cone and then simply do out-of-cone work? Maybe, but that's a silly game to play and it's likely counterproductive to your other career and non-career goals. If you are really interested in one cone, choose that one when you apply. Too many applicants attempt to game the system by choosing an "easy" cone with some scheme to actually end up switching to or working in a different cone, but experienced FSOs on this sub have stated repeatedly that such schemes never really work out. That said, there is a lot of variety in foreign service work. Pick a cone that is of interest to you, and you will have plenty of opportunities to serve in different roles. More thoughts here and here.
  4. I have a terrific idea for how to game the cone system that is not listed here. No, you don't. Somebody has already tried it and ended up being sad. Please don't try to game the system - it won't work the way you're hoping it will. Instead, just choose a cone based on your interests, talents, abilities, and passions, and work from there. You'll be happier and more successful in the long run.
Posts, Assignments, and Worldwide Availability
  1. How do post assignments work?
  1. I have an interest in working in country X or at least in a certain region of the world. How can I do that in the foreign service? During your first two tours, you're "directed" meaning you have a restricted list of places you might end up. Beyond that, you'll be responsible for finding your own assignments. It would not be uncommon for someone to develop regional expertise over time, but regional expertise doesn't mean you'd be bouncing between Paris and Geneva for the rest of your career. It's also easier to specialize in bigger countries or regions like the PRC or former Soviet Union than it is to specialize in smaller countries or niche sub-regions like Austria or the Gulf. Further discussion
  2. I have a terrific idea for how to game the assignment system that is not listed here. No, you don't. Somebody has already tried it and ended up being sad. Please don't try to game the system - it won't work the way you're hoping it will. Instead, just be prepared to be "worldwide available" and understand that might mean Paris or Bangui, Caracas or Tashkent, Wellington or Bamako, Tijuana or Toronto. If you are not comfortable with that type of availability, this is not the career for you.
  3. What are the popular or unpopular posts? It depends on the person, on the people you work with at a given post, and on environmental factors, among other things. A lot of people come in imagining they'd love working in a western European capital city only to find the cost of living, culture of the post, personality of their direct supervisor, commute to the office, or some other factor makes life less fun than it would've been if they'd simply visited that same city on vacation. Posts in other parts of the world such as sub-Saharan Africa or central Asia may have tighter-knit expat communities or post culture or better housing options or other benefits that make them more desirable for some people. One person's best post might be another person's worst. Many people on this sub have indicated that they've hated posts they expected to love and loved posts they expected to hate. One frequently mentioned bit of advice on this sub is not to think of Foreign Service posts as you would think of vacation destinations. Here is a good discussion of this topic. And here is a longer discussion of various posts that current or aspiring FSOs either like or don't like for various reasons.
  4. Where can I learn about what life is like at different posts? Try reading these real post reports.
Hiring process
  1. Why does the hiring process seem so opaque/confusing/mysterious/complicated? It's not really opaque, as State tells you exactly what they're looking for in candidates and provides study materials and resources for preparing for each stage. That said, a lot of candidates seem to feel frustrated or confused by the process for a variety of reasons. These may include:
  1. How can I improve my chances of passing?
  1. Approximately what percentage of people pass each of the stages? No one outside State really knows exactly, and numbers can vary from year to year, depending on hiring projections, but based on various reports (example) and conjecture here are some approximate guesses. Feel free to disagree.
  1. How long will it take me to get through the process? Assuming everything goes perfectly, at least a year but possibly much longer. For example: if you take the FSOT today, it will be a couple of months before you get your results. You'll have three weeks to submit your essays to the QEP and then another couple months of waiting. You'll then have to schedule your oral assessment (another 2-4 month wait) and if you pass that, you'll enter the medical and security clearance stage which will take at least 6 months in most cases, but possibly much longer. (Yes, there are anectodal exceptions to all of the above.) You'll then go through final suitability review, which will take anywhere from a week to several months and only at that point will you be on the register. You will then have to wait for hiring to be authorized and to receive an offer. You'll be on the register for 18 months, and if you don't get an offer during that window of time, your candidacy will end. If an offer doesn't come through (or if you fail any of the steps of the process), you'll have to start over by taking the FSOT again the next time you're eligible. So if you take the FSOT today, the best case scenario would be for you to be joining the foreign service a little over a year from now, but a more likely scenario is that you'll be working through this process and doing a lot of waiting for a couple of years or more. Use the time productively - there's no benefit to sitting around and stressing over the what-ifs of State Department hiring.
  2. How can I use my time productively?
  1. What if I fail one of the stages? Then you are human and you've had an experience not unlike ~98% of applicants each year. If you're interested in the foreign service, try again. Some people have taken the test more than ten times and many of today's FSO's were hired on subsequent tries because they persisted and improved themselves each time.
  2. Is there a hiring freeze? Should I wait to apply until after things return to normal? Whether there is a hiring freeze in effect or not doesn't matter. As one person said, "It'll take a long time from test to diplomat, so I don't think the temporal minutia will really matter by the time we're on the register." If you're interested in the Foreign Service, go take the test and get the process started. It's free. Worst case, you fail and you'll take the test another time (which is what you would've done if you had tried to wait out the hiring freeze). But it might be that you succeed and find yourself well-positioned on the register in time for the next big round of hiring.
  3. Is there going to be an A-100 soon? Will [cone] spots be available? How should I interpret the remarks of [important person]? Are they really only going to hire [number] of people this year? I can't deal with the stress! Why are they making me put my life on hold? Why won't they extend my time on the register? How many people will retire/resign/take an early buyout this year? How many Rangel/Pickering fellows are there and what percentage of the jobs will they take? What is the status of [funding legislation in congress]? Does [random thing I read in the news] mean we should expect to see a new A-100 now? Why does FSI have training classes on their schedule if no invites have gone out yet? etc. As an exasperated someone humorously posted on another forum, "Seriously chill. Even if you were provided this information, which isn’t likely, it has no effect on whether there are spots left for you. Enough with trying to predict what happens this year. Wait it out like any job interview."
FSOT - The Foreign Service officer Test
  1. What is the difference between the FSWE and the FSOT? The FSOT is the Foreign Service Officer Test. Its predecessor was the FSWE, the Foreign Service Written Exam, and is no longer administered. You can sign up to take the FSOT here.
  2. What are my chances of passing? There is no way to know without trying. If you're interested, take the test and see how you do. People on this sub won't be able to tell you how you're likely to do, and if you try and fail and then try again, you may find that you perform better and pass the second (or third or fourth) time around. Remember: taking the test is free. (You only have to pay if you sign up and then fail to take the test.) So you have nothing to lose - get out there and give it a go.
  3. How can I prepare?
  1. Where can I find more information about the FSOT? Try the FSOT Frequently Asked Questions on the Pearson site. (Pearson is currently the company that administers the FSOT and some of the subsequent steps of the hiring process.)
QEP - The Qualifications Evaluation Panel
  1. What is the difference between the QEP and the PN's or the PNQ's? People use these acronyms to talk about the same part of the process, even though they mean different things. The QEP is the Qualifications Evaluation Panel, and its job is to evaluate, based on a set of short essays, the likelihood that someone who passed the FSOT will also pass the FSOA. FSOT passers write one essay (a "personal narrative" or "PN") for each of six prompts (each a "personal narrative question" or "PNQ").
  2. When will I know if I made it to the QEP? You will get an email from Pearson a few weeks after the close of the FSOT testing window. Your results will also appear in your online account with Pearson. When you are notified that you made it to the QEP, you will have approximately three weeks to write your essays and submit them through the Pearson interface.
FSOA - The Foreign Service Oral Assessment
  1. Where is the FSOA held? As of May 2024, it is now held virtually, over the course of two days.
  2. When will I know if I made it to the FSOA? You will get an email from Pearson a few weeks after you submit your personal narratives to the QEP. Your results will also appear in your online account with Pearson. When you are notified that you made it to the FSOA, you will have the opportunity to schedule your FSOA date through the Pearson interface.
  3. How can I prepare?
Clearances
  1. What is the process for getting my security clearance?
    1. After you pass the FSOA, you will receive a packet of information describing how this process works. Basically, within 30 days you will fill out a lengthy questionnaire electronically on the e-QIP system. (Read e-QIP FAQs here.)
    2. The e-QIP is the electronic version of the "SF-86," a standard PDF/printable form with essentially the same questions. Although not necessary, some have recommended using a printed SF-86 form to collect all of your responses to the e-QIP and then transcribe them into the electronic system when you are ready. (The e-QIP system does allow you to save and return to work again later.) Start early: many have reported that tracking down all their foreign contacts or previous addresses has taken a long time.
    3. You will wait for a period of time (say between a few days and a few months) and then you will be contacted by an investigator from Diplomatic Security. You will set up an interview with him or her. The investigator will let you know if additional information is required; you can speed up the process by disclosing everything up front. Don't try to hide the negatives; be up front and transparent.
  2. Will X affect my ability to get a clearance? It depends. Here are the guidelines.
  3. What percentage of applicants are denied a security clearance? Only about 0.1% of initial cases, per the 2015 ODNI report. However the report notes State may discontinue security processing due to automatic disqualifiers found during a suitability review before the case reaches the security clearance adjudication phase. These cases are cancelled by Human Resources before security clearance determinations are rendered and are not, therefore, categorized as security clearance denials. {HT: Christabel34}
Register
  1. Where can I find the shadow registers? How can I be added? What is my position on the register? Contact the volunteer maintaining the shadow register for your career track or specialty
Languages
  1. Do I have to know a foreign language to be in the foreign service? No, but if you do know a language well, you will receive bonus points and may be hired before a similarly-qualified candidate without language ability. Also, every new FSO must learn a language within the first few years of service. You are on so-called "language probation" until you have passed the appropriate language exam. FSI will provide the language training for any language-designated position in which you are to serve.
  2. How do language bonus points work? When you pass the FSOA, you will have a score, usually between about 5.3 and 6, though scores can be as high as 7. You will be ranked by score against other people in your cone, and the higher scores will be hired first. So if you have the highest score for your cone. The only way to improve your score (unless you are a veteran) is to pass a language test. Most languages will get you an additional .17 points if you can demonstrate a "general professional proficiency" on the Interagency Language Roundtable Scale. For examples of the level of proficiency you would need, watch these videos. Harder languages that are in higher demand by the State Department can get you either .25 or .38 points. A list of languages for which State offers bonus points is here. And this thread has some excellent advice on languages.
  3. If I speak language X, will I get sent to a post where that language is needed? Not necessarily, unless you received language bonus points for a super critical needs language. In that latter case, you can expect to serve in a position designated for that language at least twice in your career. The super critical needs languages are listed in the bottom table on this page. But if you come in with a fluency in, say, Spanish (which is not a super critical needs language), there is no guarantee that you'll be sent to a Spanish-speaking post.
Life & Work in the Foreign Service
  1. What is it like to find out what your next post will be? Read many flag day stories here.
  2. How does pay work? How is my salary calculated? What allowances do I get? Read this excellent Foreign Service Officer Salary Guide. You can also look up information about various posts, but be advised that the data on this site is not necessarily official and may be out of date.
  3. Will I be required to serve in an unaccompanied post? You are "worldwide available," so in theory it can happen. In practice, there are a lot of people who volunteer to serve in unaccompanied posts for various reasons, and it would be unlikely that you would be forced to serve in one if you didn't want to.
  4. What is it like to be LGBT in the foreign service? Review GLIFAA's website and resources, read read real post reports, which have a specific section for LGBT info, by post and these threads - LGBT, Foreign Commercial Service LGBT, same sex marriage, Robyn McCutcheon's book about her career Foreign Service, including as the first trans FSO.
Will it help/hurt my chances if...
  1. ...I have a graduate degree from a really good school with a high GPA or I have no degree at all? No, it really doesn't matter.
  2. ...I did drugs or committed a crime or did something stupid a long time ago? It could hurt you, but it really depends on what you did, how you dealt with the problem, and what you've been doing since then. Go ahead and apply.
  3. ...I did drugs or committed a crime or did something stupid recently? It could hurt you, and if you're continuing to show poor judgment in life, it's going to be next to impossible for you to join the foreign service. However, no one on this sub will be able to tell you definitively what your outcome is likely to be. Fix whatever it is and try again. You won't know if or how this will affect your candidacy unless you try.
  4. ...I have dual citizenship? Your clearances will take longer, but it's not a deal breaker. Read details here.
  5. **...I have a foreign-born spouse or I have many contacts overseas or I have lived overseas for a long time?**Same answer: your clearances will take longer, but it's not a deal breaker. Read details here and here.
Miscellaneous
  1. What happens after I receive my Orientation offer? Orientation 101 is the initial training class you take when you officially start work in the foreign service. Congratulations! It is a time of a lot of changes. Here is a description of what happens.
  2. How can I become an Ambassador? You probably won't become an ambassador, and it's not worth the brain cycles to try to plan for it. But even if you have the right set of skills, knowledge, and luck through a career spanning many decades and you end up as an ambassador, you will still have spent far more time as a rank-and-file career employee than as an ambassador. So make sure you are interested, first and foremost, in the job and lifestyle of a foreign service officer, which is where you will spend the entirety of your career.
  3. I am outraged over what the President / Secretary / someone else in power just said / did! Nothing wrong with feeling outrage, but what you do with that feeling may matter. And while you may dissent through the appropriate (private) channel, no matter who is in power and no matter who you voted for, your duty as a foreign service officer is to publicly advance the interests of the U.S. As a simplistic example, take a look at who came in first or second in the presidential elections going back ~20 years. Any of them could've been your boss (with small differences in electoral returns for the runners-up, of course): B. Clinton, Dole, Bush, Gore, Kerry, McCain, Obama, Romney, H. Clinton, Trump. Those individuals hold a pretty diverse set of policy views, and the next twenty years of presidential elections will probably result in a similarly diverse list. So if you want to be in the foreign service, think of your job as representing the U.S. regardless of who is in power. If you can see yourself representing the U.S. when person A is in power but not when person B is in power, this may not be the best career for you in the long run.

2024.05.11 16:34 beyond-pale Looking for advice on home network upgrade

I recently bought a TP-LINK ER605 V2 router to replace an older ubiquity EdgeRouter X that was performing routefirewall/DHCP duties for my home network. Currently I use Plume SuperPods (Wifi5) for all my wifi AP management...
Dipping a toe into the Omada system has me contemplating a full refresh of my home network to something a bit more future proof. One day I will probably upgrade my fiber connection to from 1Gb/s to 2Gb/s which means all my 1GbE stuff will need to go (or, at least the router!
Any suggestions for a decent, not super expensive, Omada setup for my needs? It seems the product family doesn't have a "perfect" match for my needs. The only integrated routecontrollepoe switch is limited to 1Gbs and all of the higher speed options have either way too many ports for my needs, or no PoE support, etc..
Here's what I need to support at a minimum
My current leaning is toward a TL-SG3210XHP-M2 with 8x 2.5GbE PoE ports and 2x 10Gb SFP+ slots. That gives me a single device that can connect all of the APs to directly, Then I would just add a 1GB unmanaged PoE switch (TP-Link, or whatever) to connect the VOIP stuff to and another basic gigabit non-poe switch to break out my other hard-wired devices. One SFP+ slot would connect to my server and the other would be free for future upgrade if/when I go to a faster router...
Or would I be better served by a 10Gb managed switch without PoE as the main "backbone" of the network then use smaller PoE switches to break out all my other devices?
Thoughts? Suggestions? what kind of setup do you guys run for similar scenarios?
Thanks!

2024.05.11 15:42 After_Midnight1508 Idea: Freezing Mechanics

Hey I propose that AH add this or similar mechanics and introduce freezing weapons into the game. Please, share your thoughs if the idea makes any sense.
Idea: Freezing Mechanics
As an example of this mechanics lets use an imagined weapon called Liquid Nitrogen Thrower, working similar to firethrower but holds ammo in liquid nitrogen cylinder, and Liquid Nitrogen Impact Grenade whitch splashes liquid nitrogen on detonation.
.
.
I. What existing mechanics do we want to use:
  1. Game already knows whether a projectile destroys enemy vital or non-vital part. Shooting off a hand or leg of robot doesnt kill it, but makes it not working. Therefore with very high probability every enemy part has at least status "isDestroyed", so can be given additional properties like "isFrozen".
  2. Game knows whether hit part of enemy is armored and what armor level is it.
  3. Game can give effects to certain planets.
.
.
II. Dictionary:
PTL - planet temperature level, constant (planet effect)
STL - spawn temperature level of unit part, constant (hand, leg, shield, head etc.)
USTL - average STL of all unit's parts on spawn, constant
CTL - current temperature level of unit part (hand, leg, shield, head etc.)
UCTL - average CTL of all unit's not destroyed parts
.
.
III. The mechanics: (all numbers are of course to be adjusted)
.1. After spawning an enemy, each his vital and non-vital part is given a property STL. Then USTL for this unit is calculated. These two values are constant.
CTL and UCTL represents unit's/part's current state. At spawn CTL is equal to STL, UCTL is equal to USTL.
a) Because bots are built from bare metal, bot STL equals roughly to the PTL. On hot planet they can have 40 °C, on ice planets they can have -10 °C.
Robot unarmored parts:
Robot armored parts:
b) Bug are alive and their bodies are burning food to warm themselves.
To calculate bug STL we use this:
Therefore if planet temperature is 40°C, the bug STL is about 38°C. If planet temperature is 0°C, the bug STL is about 33°C.
Bug unarmored parts:
Bug armored parts:
.
.2. Passive effects.
a) All unit's all parts CTL is slowly moving towards the planet temperature over time. Frozen elements are unfrozing over time on warm planets. Warm elements are frozing on cold planets.
b) During snowstorm the PTL lowers by 300%, therefore
c) Near fire tornado unit's all parts CTL goes up, the more the closer it is.
c) Active effect for armors: prevent or reduce all parts CTL change speed.
d) When moving, unit's all parts CTL drops a bit slower.
e) The more unit's UCTL is lower than its USTL, the more it is slowed.
.
.3. Active freezing:
a) Liquid Nitrogen Thrower - Throws Liquid Nitrogen at an area that lowers targeted parts CTL, making them "frozen" after a time.
b) Liquid Nitrogen Grenade
.
.4. Corner cases.
a) Heavy Armored enemies should not be easy to freeze and destroy by explosion.
Solution: minimum CTL of body part is different for each level of armor. Set Heavy Armor minimum CTL to -300°C. So to destroy it, you have first use Nitrogen Thrower for max duration to -196°C, then throw Nitrogen Grenade.
For big enemies this will be even harder (longer Nitrogen Thrower duration and more grenades required) if point b) is implemented.
a) Big enemies body parts should not be easy to freeze and then destroy by explosions.
Solution: Nitrogen Thrower and Nitrogen Grenade are area effect weapons. Multiply the speed of body part CTL lowering (for over-time-damage) and amount of CTL lowered (for instant damage) by affectedSurface/wholePartSurface.
Example: Square 10cmx10cm has a surface of 100cm. Nitrogen Thrower covers square of 10cm. Freezing Speed Modifier is: 100% * 10cm/100cm = 10%. Therefore this square CTL is lowering 10 times slower than base.

2024.05.11 14:40 sheddyian My first full month on Agile - average of 10p/kWh !

Looking at previous bills for the period of 7-Apr to 7-May, to try to make the comparisons similar :
Date usage total p/kWh
May 2021 198.8 £41.83 21p
May 2022 126.4 £45.96 36p
May 2023 141.4 £62.72 44p
May 2024 338.0 £34.07 10p
(The p/kWh figure is simply the usage divided by the monthly bill total, so it includes standing charges and VAT - its just an equivalence figure for comparison)
Since I switched on 16th March 24, I've made a saving every day - I've yet to have a day where it's cost me more than the regular tariff.
Best saving was 6 April where it saved me £17.77 for one day, when we had some plunge pricing. Worst saving was 9 May when it still saved me 25p for the day.
So I'm very pleased that I moved tariffs, even without the plunge pricing it's saving me money.
Edited to add some background :
I don't have an EV (except an e-bike), nor batteries or solar. I work part time, my partner is here most of the time. House is heated with gas central heating (no storage heaters). Typical daily usage is between 3 and 7 kWh. Typical background load is between 30 and 100 watts.
The main change I've made is to avoid using heavy loads during peak 4-7pm time. I've been setting the washing machine to wash at the cheapest time when possible.
When we had the price plunges it was still quite chilly, so I used some electric plug in heaters that I've got, and didn't use the gas for those times. I also used the immersion to heat the hot water instead of the usual gas. Any time the electricity price is below equivalent kWh gas price then I've used the electric immersion to heat the water instead of the gas.
Although I was replacing some gas usage with electricity, I didn't notice a drop in my gas usage for April though, perhaps because this April has been unusually cold here compared to previous years, so the heating was being used more.

2024.05.11 13:19 jzunn Shoe Buying Guide (especially for those with wide toe box, narrow and shallow heels)

I have spent the past month trying on >50 different models of shoes across 7 brands (La Sportiva, Scarpa, Evolv, Five Ten, Unparallel, Tenaya, Mad Rock) to find the ones that best suit my feet. I am a male with a street shoe size of EU 38 (UK 5, US 6) and wide toes, yet narrow and shallow heels. Just for some background, my first shoes were LS Solution Comps Women's, which I upsized by 0.5 (vs. street size) - I bought the shoe despite the poor fit (super baggy heels, which impacts my ability to heel hook well) because the shoe had great reviews (facepalm). For the Solution Comps (and performance shoes in general), it is important that the shoes fit tightly in order for you to maximise the performance potential - a factor I eschewed in favour of comfort.
Anyway, I decided to write this guide (primarily aimed at beginneintermediate climbers) because I wanted to help others in selecting shoes, especially those with the same foot profile as me - it has been a struggle to find shoes that fit perfectly!
How to pick a shoe?
Fit
First things first, the most important thing (which isn't really emphasised enough by the shoe reviews you read online) is fit. Everyone's feet are slightly different (toe width, heel width and depth, arch height, toe profile e.g. Roman, Greek, Egyptian) and you need to take that into account when selecting shoes. Your shoes should ideally fit like a sock (i.e. no space/gaps anywhere - remember to check the toe box and the back and bottom of the heels) and your toes should be slightly curled and positioned at the very front of the shoes - the shoes will probably feel slightly uncomfortable but shouldn't feel overly painful.
There are a few helpful websites that I used to narrow down which shoes to try (take them as a rough guide because there are some shoes that are made for narrow feet that I find relatively comfortable):
Lots of shoe models tend to have a men's/women's (or high volume/low volume) variant. If you have narrower feet, try the women's/LV variant. Because I have quite small feet, I found that stores typically don't stock my size in the men's/HV version.
I would recommend you try shoes in stores or at demos because then you can benefit from the expertise of the person at the store. Some stores might let you try climbing in the shoes for a few minutes, which really helps you identify if there are any pain points (at the very least, you should try walking and tip toeing in the shoes to see if they cause problems for your toes or if the heel slides off easily). Bear in mind that shoes at demos have already been worn in so if you buy the same size new, it will feel very different.
One other point I would add is that a lot of people don't have a good gauge of their own feet (me included!) and buy trainers that don't necessarily fit their feet well (so their street size is incorrect). If you can, I would recommend going to a dedicated running shoe or hiking shoe store (in the UK, you can try Runners Need or Cotswold Outdoors, etc.) where they have machines/devices to measure your foot length and width and assess whether you have high/low arches. I never realised I had wide feet (I always assumed they were narrow because my shoe size is small) until I went to buy hiking shoes and nothing fit right.
What is the purpose of your climbing shoes?
You need consider the purpose of your climbing shoes:
The above factors impact several dimensions of the shoe:
One thing to note is that if you are a beginner in climbing, it probably makes sense to buy a "beginner" shoe (e.g. LS Tarantula, Scarpa Reflex, Scarpa Helix, Evolv Defy/Elektra, Tenaya Tanta, Boreal Joker, Five Ten Kirigami, etc.) because you will likely have poor footwork (which means you will burn through the rubber quickly) and you will likely not be comfortable wearing shoes with aggressive profiles. There are also some "beginner" shoes with more performance-oriented features (toe patch, stickier rubber, more asymmetric, more downturned, etc.) like LS Finale, Evolv Kronos/Kira, Scarpa Veloce.
It's important to emphasise that your climbing technique is more important than the shoes you wear. A lot of people (me included) get caught up wanting to buy the "best" shoe and downsize aggressively but it's important to think whether it is actually necessary (do you need Solution Comps to climb V2?) and productive (if your feet are in severe pain, will you want to climb?) Of course, ultimately it's your money and if a shoe makes you happy, then buy it!
Sizing
One area of buying shoes that is a bit finicky is shoe sizing. Different brands size shoes differently and as a general guide, La Sportiva, Scarpa, and Tenaya typically require you to downsize by 1-2+ sizes, while I find that Evolv, Unparallel, Five Ten, and Mad Rock tend to match street size (or be within 0.5-1 size of street, even requiring you to size up sometimes).
There are a few websites that provide shoe sizing recommendations:
Shoes that fit my feet (wide toes, narrow and shallow heels)
I have duck feet (wide toes, narrow and shallow heels), a Greek toe profile, and relatively flat feet and for me, the biggest limiting factor when it comes to climbing shoe fit was my shallow heels, followed by my wide toes (narrow shoes sometimes caused pain for my 4th and 5th toe but this wasn't as big of an issue as my shallow heels) - I didn't find that my Greek toe profile and relatively flat feet limited my shoe selection. I have a low pain tolerance and on top of that, I don't want to risk having any foot issues from downsizing aggressively (going for a very tight fit can increase the probability of things like bunions, Morton's neuroma, Haglund's deformity, etc.), especially considering I am only climbing V5.
Here are the shoes that I found fit my feet very well:
Note that for the Unparallel shoes, Anasazi Pro LV and Veloce Women's, I could have downsized by 0.5 and still fit into the shoes, but I value comfort. I found the Zenist Women's and Geshido Women's fairly painful to break in at street size but too loose if I sized up by 0.5.
Other shoes that people recommend for wide feet that I found didn't fit my heels (generally, the heel was too deep/wide/bulbous, especially for LS shoes - for clarity, by too deep, I mean that the bottom of my heels don't touch the bottom of the shoes):
Of course, everyone's feet are different so even if those shoes don't fit me, they might fit you perfectly so I recommend trying them, if possible!
Hope this helps!

Introduction

As an avid reader, few things excite me more than the promise of a great book sale. Being able to stock up on new reads at a discount is literally the best. So when I learned about Amazon's upcoming six-day Book Sale from May 15th to 20th, I could hardly contain my excitement. This was the perfect opportunity to expand my digital library without breaking the bank.
However, with thousands of titles on sale and new deals dropping each day, I knew it would be all too easy to get overwhelmed browsing through page after page. I needed a plan of action if I wanted to make the most of this event. So I decided to do some research on the sale and put together some tips and strategies to help guide my shopping.
My hope is that these insights will allow other readers to dive into the sale feeling prepared and confident they can find many great deals. With a little guidance, we can all curate vibrant personal libraries through Amazon's Book Sale. So read on for my best advice on navigating the sale like a pro!

Key Details About the Sale

Before diving into strategies, it's helpful to understand some fundamentals about Amazon's upcoming Book Sale. Here are a few important details to keep in mind:

Dates

As mentioned, the sale will run for six consecutive days from May 15th through May 20th. This gives shoppers a full week to browse deals at their leisure without feeling rushed.

Selection

Thousands of book titles across all genres will be discounted during the sale. This includes both print and digital formats like Kindle eBooks. Major genres like fiction, non-fiction, children's books and more will all be represented.

Deal Types

Shoppers can expect to find straight-up percentage discounts on individual titles (eg. 50% off). But there will also be bundle deals, collections curated by genre/interest, and daily doorbuster offers with extra-deep discounts.

Eligibility

The sale is open to all Amazon customers, regardless of Prime membership status. However, Prime perks like Kindle Unlimited may allow additional savings potential that non-members can't access.

Geography

The Book Sale will only be available to shoppers in the United States. Readers in other major markets like the UK, Canada, and Australia will have to look for local book promotions instead.
Keeping these core details in mind will set the stage for making smart purchasing choices throughout the weeklong event. With the basics covered, here are some targeted strategies.

Strategies for Finding the Best Deals

Have a Wish List Ready

Before the sale even begins, take some time to compile a comprehensive wish list on Amazon. Browse through genres you enjoy, check out Editors' Picks, and note any highly anticipated new releases. Having specific titles already in mind will make the shopping process much more focused and efficient. You'll be able to quickly check prices against your list instead of endlessly scrolling.

Check Daily Deal Catalogs

Beyond regular discounted titles, Amazon will feature curated lists of particularly deep discounted "Daily Deals" each day of the sale. Be sure to check these dedicated catalogs near the top of the featured/kindle daily deals page for extra savings on select books. The doorbusters here can save you 50% or more off regular prices at times.

Pay Attention to Genre-Specific Promotions

Certain genres may see increased discounts or bundle promotions on given days. For example, there could be a Spotlight on Science Fiction bundles one day, 75% off Thrillers the next. Follow u/amazongoodreads on social media for announcements on genre-focused deals each morning to optimize your shopping for favorites.

Search Specifically Within Sale Sections

Do targeted keyword searches within the Digital Book Deals, Print Book Deals, or Daily Deals sections rather than searching Amazon overall. This will surface all sale titles related to your search terms upfront for easy comparison shopping against regular prices.

Tap Into Additional Services if a Prime Member

Prime members have access to Kindle Unlimited, Prime Reading, and First Reads which allow sampling book catalogs for additional possible savings. Use those perks alongside sale shopping to maximize value from your membership.

Consider Pre-Ordering Anticipated Titles

If that highly anticipated new release you've been eyeing is being discounted during the sale, it may save you money to pre-order it now versus buying after release when the price bumps up. Just be sure you'll have time to read your pre-orders during the return period.

Set Reminder Alerts for Specific Deals

If you see a great promo but the sale price is only good for one day, use the « Remind Me » feature to flag it for easy rebrowsing later. Amazon will send an alert when the deal is about to expire so you're more likely to catch fleeting promotions.
Using a mix of these targeted strategies can you help curate an optimized shopping experience that ensures you find all the best deals across six days of savings. With the right approach, your digital library and to-read pile stand to grow tremendously for much less money spent.

Additional Perks for Prime Members

While Amazon's Book Sale is open universally, Prime members will enjoy some extra advantages that amplify savings potential even more:

Prime Reading Catalog

For starters, active Prime subscriptions unlock a rotating selection of thousands of books, magazines, comics and more through Prime Reading at no additional cost. During the sale, Prime members can check if particular titles they want are available here for zero dollars alongside discounted options.

Kindle First Reads

Each month, Prime members get early access to a curated selection of pre-release books from Amazon Publishing. These don't technically have list prices yet, but the advance access allows snagging new fiction and non-fiction before anyone else for just the monthly Prime subscription charge alone. First Reads books announced during Book Sale weeks are an extra perk.

Kindle Unlimited Library

For those interested primarily in ebooks and audiobooks, a Kindle Unlimited membership opens a full digital catalog for borrowing included with Prime. KU subscribers will see sale prices listed but members pay nothing additional to read Kindle Unlimited selections during (and long after) the promotion ends. The service is essentially a coupon-doubling perk when paired with sale browsing.

Two-Day Shipping on Physical Items

Prime's expedited delivery ensures sale books you purchase in paperback or hardcover arrive sooner than waiting the standard delivery window. Faster shipping helps put exciting new reads in-hand without delays, getting you to the good stuff more rapidly.
With perks like these in their digital reading arsenal year-round, it's clear Prime members can capitalize on Amazon's Book Sale discounts to an even greater degree. The additional value of included catalogs, early access titles, and faster shipping makes their membership that much more worthwhile when deals are flying. Make sure Prime members make the most of their extra bonus resources during sale weeks!

Best Practices for Your Bookshelf

Making the most of a great book sale calls for more than just deal-hunting skills - it requires smart strategies for building your home library too. Here are some organizational and storage best practices to put those purchased titles to their full use:

Designate Reading Spaces

Whether you keep books on desks, nightstands, or built-in shelves, dedicating areas of your home to reading helps prevent clutter. Know where books "live" based on if being currently read, for later, or reference/collection.

Implement the Dewey Decimal System

Giving sections of your shelves consistent call numbers based on genre makes books easy to browse. Organize by 100s, 200s, etc. for fiction, then non-fiction groups like biography, history, travel etc. Bonus: kids can learn the library organization tool too!

Interfile Series Together

Readers enjoying following character arcs or storylines through book series will want physical copies kept in proper order. Leave space between titles to add later installments. Use placeholder volumes to avoid zig-zag rearranging.

Label Shelves by Genre

For visual browsing, utilize labels, bookends or signs denoting what types of titles are housed on each shelf - Mysteries, Classics, Suspense etc. This makes finding the right mood of reading much simpler.

Curate Displays Seasonally

Feature seasonal-themed books together whether it's beach reads for summer or spooky tales for Halloween. Rotating displays keeps your library feeling fresh and offers new perspectives on your collection.

Go Digital with Duplicates

If you've purchased the same book on sale in both print and ebook formats, use the digital version for reading-on-the-go while preserving the physical copy as part of your collection on the shelf.
With a well-organized home library built using strategies like these, you'll get far more mileage out of every book acquired during mega sales. The titles become not just consumption items but lasting pieces in a thoughtful collection - yours to be explored again and again for years to come.

Getting the Most from Sale Purchases

Once the shopping rush of Amazon's great Book Sale is over and packages start arriving, it's time to start tackling those newly acquired tomes! Here are some tips for optimizing the experience of each new read:

Digitize Notes & Bookmarks

For non-fiction and references and libraries heavy on information, using a note-taking app or software to digitally compile insights keeps organized ideas in one place. Jot down quotes, page numbers and thoughts as you read directly into your notes for easy future reference across devices.

Try Bookish Subscription Boxes

If sale purchases left room in the budget, sign up for themed bookish subscription boxes delivering monthly bundles around particular genres, interests or classics to further fuel your new library. Each shipment is a new adventure and perk of sale shopping.

Start a Reading Journal

Chronicling thoughts, predictions, favorite passages and review in a dedicated reading journal transforms the experience. Later it's fun to revisit past entries and see perspectives change on re-reads. Special sale volumes deserve documented reflections.

Read With a Book Club

Independently read selections that align with an online or local book club read schedule. Bring new sale volumes to virtual discussions or meet-ups and gain fresh insights through collaborative chats.

Try the Serial Approach

If an especially long sale series grabbed you, pare titles down into more manageable weekly reads rather than powering through continuously. This makes the experience last longer while preventing reading exhaustion.

Record Audiobook Narration

For selections with amazing narration, record yourself reading along with the audiobook performance. Then play it back to hear the differences in your interpretation. A fun way to gain public speaking practice too!

Trade Reviews For More Credit

Write detailed, helpful reviews of sale books on sites like Goodreads and Amazon to gain credit towards future reading material. Give value back to the community that enhanced your new library.
Getting full value and enjoyment from books means more than just consumption. Using strategies to maximize each new read, discuss and apply its lessons will make every discounted volume purchased feel even more worthwhile down the road.
In conclusion, with a little preparation and strategy, Amazon's multi-day Book Sale offers readers a tremendous opportunity to stock up on new reading material for our personal libraries at deep savings. By being smart about wish lists, daily deal alerts, organization techniques and full engagement with newly acquired titles, we can each grow our understanding and take full advantage of this literacy-fostering promotion. I hope book lovers everywhere feel empowered to dive into this great reading event feeling confident and equipped to discover many worthy new reads!

2024.05.11 08:00 Fluffy-Beautiful-615 Advice on Offers and Risks for J3

Would love some advice on what you'd do in my situation, with my job mix and the potential for incoming offers. I'm torn between replacing J1 with my recently accepted offer or not. Then I need to decide what to do if some of the other companies I'm interviewing with come through, which one and whether I should add more to my plate with a J3, and which option/mix is best in general.
Potential incoming offers (obviously, don't want to count my chickens before they hatch, but want to start thinking about the decisions I'd make if they all pan out,)
For all three of these 'potential' offers it's expected to be a decent amount of work, but I'm also expected to have a ton of freedom on my side in terms of what I work on, 90% of meeting times, etc. All have stock options/RSUs, but these are private companies, so I'm treating them as functionally worthless.
Industry-wise:
In addition to comp, potential people overlap, and industry overlap, time zones/company headquarter locations are the other big factor I'm thinking about. J1 and J2 are on opposite coasts, which has been a blessing and minimized any chance of potential overlap or a manager from J1 knowing a manager from J2.
I could also just renege on the recently accepted offer if one of the new offers come through, if that ends up being what people think is best.
Would love to hear your thoughts! Super grateful I have my current Js and interviews. Had a huge swathe of recruiters reach out to me via LinkedIn and trying to make the most of it, then probably going to lay low for a bit.

2024.05.11 03:27 x-squared Shades of Mort'ton - Thoughts on Improvements

Shades of Mort'ton - Thoughts on Improvements
I just green logged Shades of Mort'ton as an iron and I have some thoughts.
To start, this actually wasn't a bad grind at all. Some positives:
  • I had fun
  • There were some fun conversations with people while repairing the temple
  • The activities were grind heavy, but also varied enough that I didn't get bored
  • The zealot's outfit is a nice flex
  • I don't have a use for them at the moment, but I like having swamp bark and blood bark in my bank
That said, this minigame is definitely not at the level of the more modern content and I think it could benefit from a little TLC. Here are some things that stood out to me during the grind and my ideas on how they could be made better.

Temple Repair

  • Sanctity resets when you log out. I at one point needed a bathroom break, so I logged out after hitting 100% sanctity and was unpleased to learn this the hard way.
    • How to make better:
      • Sanctity should persist when you log out
      • or Temple repair should function more like wintertodt or other modern minigames with clearly defined phases where you can generate sanctity and know implicitly that your sanctity will not persist after the round ends.
  • The flame goes out unpredictably, meaning that when you're making blessed oil you have to also carry a tinderbox or hope someone else has one.
    • How to make better:
      • Let the flame always be lit if the temple is built enough; no manually lighting required.
      • or Make the flame have a secondary effect like faster sanctity generation so players in the phase where they are generating sanctity have a reason to keep it lit for the players in the phase where they are cashing it in.
  • You have to use oil on the flame individually and manually. Further, the way the hitbox works you often end up clicking on another player not the flame.
    • How to make better:
      • Give a make all option like a normal camp fire
  • Teleporting back and forth to the bank to get more oil alongside getting more resources and the inventory management that comes with it is weirdly inconvenient, or at least I never felt like it worked quite right. Leaving is mandatory too, as in order to make a pyre log you have to use your oil on logs not found in Mort'ton. This makes banking an intrinsic part of this minigame and all the banks are weirdly inconvenient unless you have Morytania legs 4, and even then its still a pretty long run (compared to litterally any other minigame at least).
    • How to make better:
      • Flamtear oil vat? Gricoller's oil can? The rate at which oil is currently sanctified is actually fine in my opinion, but I think there should be a way to sanctify oil in larger batches, keeping you at the minigame without teleporting away for longer periods of time.
  • Resources required are unclear. If you have beams and limestone in your bag, but no swamp paste the messaging is unclear.
    • How to make better:
      • Revisit the menus and messages to bring up to modern standards

Lighting Shade Remains

  • Oil must be used on logs individually, making this a fairly click-intensive and tedious process immediately following the click-intensive and tedious process of using oil on the flame.
    • How to make better:
      • Give a make all option
  • Shade remains must be used in Mort'ton with the pyre logs. Logs must be used on the funeral pyre manually, then shades placed, then click to light. If you try to add a log immediately after you will likely click the animated shade ghost rising from the smoke and not place the log. Then keys or coins granted will be placed on an altar for you to retrieve.
    • How to make better:
      • Add the coins/keys directly into your inventory
      • Allow one click lighting the funeral pyres in the same way pyre ships and barbarian spirits work
      • Allow funeral pyres to be created in the bank as opposed to on site, i.e. bring a full inventory of spirits to lay to rest as opposed to half an inventory of logs and half an inventory of remains

Using Keys

  • The difference in key level is unclear. Even checking the wiki now, the difference is too minimal to be of any note. This only makes using keys more annoying, when it should actually be more exciting to get a purple key over a red one.
    • How to make better:
      • Adjust drop rates between key colors to make the difference more obvious
      • Adjust the visual presentation of the chests themselves to make the better tiers actually appear better compared to the lower.
  • Undead zealots have a chance to spawn when you use keys. Those bones can be used on the altar to recharge prayer. However using them falls in an odd place in the cadence of the minigame. When you are using keys your inventory is filled with a bunch of random alchables or other junk you don't want to just throw away, but simultaneously this is the only time you will have access to the bones unless you bring them with you to the bank. You (or at least I) don't want to use these trips collecting shade remains because I want to maximize the number of keys I bring and when I collect shades I want to bring food and potions and maximize the number of remains I get per trip.
    • How to make better:
      • Make undead zealots function closer to a slayer superior monster instead. Then when you kill a shade it has a chance to spawn a zealot.

Drops

  • The flamtaer hammer isn't on the collection log. This is wrong, Yarigumo pointed this out below.
  • How to make better:
    • Add it? Just confused why it isn't there while the bag is.
  • Fine cloth is too rare and too time consuming to get for early game mage armor.
    • How to make better:
      • Increase the drop rate across the board but scale it to be more common for the lower tier shades than the higher tier ones. This will make it easier for young accounts to get access to splitbark as opposed to only getting access once you already have mystic or Ahrims.
  • The lock drop rates are... not great. Locks provide a drastic improvement to collecting shade remains, and each tier is a big upgrade. However as collecting oil is the most time-intensive part of this minigame, using your oil on anything but the highest level shade you can possibly do is a mistake unless you're trying to green log, making lower level locks dumb to try to get for any reason other than a green log. Locks are ~1/60 for every tier, meaning you need to burn 60 pyre logs on average of the lowest level shade in order to get the bronze locks while you need to burn the exact same number to get steel locks or up.
    • How to make better:
      • The drop rate for bronze locks should be very common while the drop rate for gold locks should be much rarer with the intermediate locks ramping up in rarity between. If you're grinding the zealot's outfit, you will be opening an average of 512 gold chests. Higher tier locks being significantly more rare would incentivize opening lower tier chests, specifically because of the benefit it will provide to the much longer gold chest grind. This would add some variability and flexibility to the game.
I waiting until green logging this minigame to make this post just so I could emphasize that this is not a post of someone wanting easy-scape; rather this is someone wanting some quality of life improvements for those who attempt this next.
tl;dr - Fun minigame, feels kinda old though so I hope it gets some attention
EDIT:
One thought I missed is that when you first attack a shade it transforms to attack you. When it transforms you exit combat. You do not autoretaliate from this point on until it actually does damage to you. This means for every shade you have to click to attack, wait for it to transform, and then attack it again.
How to make better?
Wyrms were like this too at one point in time until an update was made so that you continued being in combat with them during their transformation. Make that same change here.

2024.05.11 03:20 Vast_Raspberry4192 AITAH for not having “empathy” when my wife has anger issues?

For a little context my wife and I are have an infant that is turning 12months soon so the past ~2 years has been a lot emotionally for both of us. She has always had a short fuse, small things go wrong and then suddenly she is cussing, stomping around, and slamming things (I.e she drops something on the ground while doing the dishes, suddenly it’s God damnit here, Fucking hell there and then because she is mad she causes something else to happen and she spirals.) Add the baby to the equation and it’s 10x worse, now she is constantly at the edge of a meltdown. Every time she has to step over the baby gate I brace for a bomb to go off.
And honestly I try to be understanding and I try not to make the situation worse. But these “temper tantrums” are becoming an everyday occurrence sometimes multiple times a day. And I can’t just keep listening to it.
Today’s meltdown ended with her expressing how she just does the same thing day in and day out (she is a stay at home mom). Which isn’t entirely true, she has done a different activity outside the house almost everyday this week. I get having a baby is a lot to take care of and it’s redundant.
I work nights and sleep has always been a struggle, I’ve since swapped when I sleep during the day to help her out more. I’ve pulled strings at work so my schedule doesn’t rotate anymore. I watch the baby almost exclusively for his first 2 wake windows. None of it is apparently enough, even though our son sleeps really well now, her stress levels are through the roof.
So at the end of this meltdown after I once again tried to stay out of her way, we had a little spat. I eventually told her I do the same thing everyday too, I work, watch the kid, then sleep. She hit me with the classic line “so I get no empathy at all” it’s the third or fourth time she has used this, it always manages to guilt me into apologizing down the road. But I really don’t feel like I should be expected to go over and comfort her as she is flying off the rails like that.
Obviously I appreciate her sacrifice being a stay at home mom and I’ve told her that several times. I’ve also stated I know it’s incredibly difficult. I have empathy for that. But I just can’t bring myself to comfort her when she gets worked up like that, I don’t want to raise my son to think the first thing to do when facing a problem is get pissed off.

2024.05.11 03:08 IUniven Trying to modify a tool/entity on the ground to add enchantments

So for context, I'm working on a datapack for making higher levels of enchantment accessible, i.e. up to 8 on efficiency. Problem is even if books have >max level, they still only apply up to max level via an anvil use.
So, I'm trying to come up with a way to make it so when one of the higher tier books is dropped with a tool, the tool gets that enchantment added.
I just can't figure out how to use data modify to add the enchantment to the tool (if that's even right, though I don't see why it wouldn't be). Components have made this a real mess, because while fun to figure out on my own, there's very few tutorials I can find that cover this specific use case.
For reference, I've tried a number of commands like this:
/data modify entity '@e'[type=minecraft:item,limit=1,nbt={Item:{id:"minecraft:diamond_pickaxe"}}] Item.components.minecraft:enchantments:values append value {"minecraft:efficiency":5}
(single quotes obviously not included for the @)
I'm also struggling with the uses for append, merge, etc., but from what I can see I'm fairly certain I don't want merge. I do think I know append isn't right either, but I've just been experimenting, trying to figure this out, and can't.
Any help would be appreciated!

2024.05.11 03:06 Plane-Ice-1828 Everything I did to glow up in 2 years

Warning this will be a long post, it has everything I've learnt in the past couple of years from hair growth, to styling, to weightloss, to nervous system regulation and more.
I'm in my early 30s, I have 3B hair, tall, two years ago I was obese, prediabetic, I had anxiety problems, now I'm just a tall [seemingly ;) ] effortlessly pretty black girl and I want all my beauties on here to have my beauty secrets.
Let's start from the outside.

Hair

I have PCOS so it affects my hair growth and causes hirsutism, basically male patterened facial hair and male patterned baldness.
Hair Growth: Here is the true secret sauce to hair growth, stimulating your scalp. I do daily scalp massages with a bamboo brush (even the bristles are made of rounded bamboo) very gentle. This is the one I use: Golab Beauty I do short strokes which prevents any tangles. Morning and Night. I then go in with a scalp serum, I use The Oui scalp serum but it costs a pretty penny. In the first yearish I used (The 'Ordinary' Haircare Growth Set Multi-Peptide Serum For Hair Density) which worked wonders and was cost effective. At nights I seal with any scalp oil that has rosemary oil. Sadly Mielle's formula no longer works for me, but As I Am rosemary oil has been working, I also like the Camille Rose Rosemary Oil Strengthening Hair and Scalp Drops. For Washing my hair I suffer from sebaceous dermatitis which causes scaliness. Paradoxically my scalp is so oily which is what triggers the ezcema and develops the dry patches. Reversing my PCOS symptoms fixed this but what also helped was the Nizoral shampoo with 1% Ketoconazole. It's harsh so I do it once to twice a month at most and I always follow up with a moisturizing shampoo, and of course finish with a wash out conditioner & leave in conditioner.
Hair Retention: This is the info we all know about preventing breakage but I'll include just in case. Hair growth happens in the scalp like said before but to retain that growth it's important to wear protective hairstyles (especially while asleep), a silk/satin bonnet or wrap, silk/satin pillowcase, do not let your hair air dry at night. There is debate about this but I've seen hair specialists and scientists say our hair are especially fragile when wet (especially curly/kinky hair). Therefore, we are much more prone to snags and breakage while our hair is wet. So going to bed make sure your hair is dried. If you're air drying your hair during the day try not to touch it too much - as little manipulation as possible. Personally choose to diffuse/blow dry my hair and this has prevented most of the breakage I was previously experiencing. Lastly, moisturize and oil your ends. I won't pretend like I know which order is best or even if it's important but I've found that using hair moisturizediluted leave in conditioner then hair oil works best for me.
Hirsutism/Facial Hair: Spearmint essential oil. I add 1-2 drops of the oil to my moisturizer each time I put on my moisturizer and it helped A LOT with reducing my facial hair. I also drink a lot of spearmint tea. Spearmint specifically has been proven to lower androgen/testosterone levels which is why it helps. I also took supplements which I'll include at the end because they served multiple purposes. Be sure not to add the oil to the entire bottle because that will ruin your moisturizer's formula. Just add the drops in your palm/finger tips and mix in your face cream each time you moisturize your jawline, chin, underneck. Also, do this after moisturizing the upper part of your face without the oil because it's harsh and the scent can be irritating to your eye area.
Body hair: Personally I sugar wax my arms and legs, the hair has grown back so thin now. I make it myself and follow tutorials from abetweene on youtube.
Hair colouHairstyle: This will depend on your face shape and color season. I'm a dark winter colour season and I have a heart face shape. I used the Dressika app to discover my color season before I could afford to get myself professionally assessed and I got the same results. Just be sure to use natural lighting, like by a window. Once you have your colour season you can choose hair colours that work best for you (although natural almost always works best). For my hairstyle I try to choose styles that compliment my heart shaped face. I used the youtube channel Dear Peachie to help me with figuring this out.

Style

I think most of us know about Kibbe and colour seasons. This was how I upgraded my wardrobe. I'm a soft dramatic so I wear things that work for my tall height and accentuate my waist.
This was the game changer with colour seasons. Most of us know about our true seasons, but it can get restrictive. Sister seasons and colour dissonance is also helpful to know.
My colour season is dark winter, so my sister seasons would be dark autumn and true winter. Thid gives me more wiggle room to style myself.
Dissonance are colours that are outside your true season and your sister seasons, you sprinke this in to add interest. Think of an outfit that is extremely matchy and cohesive but has that one accessory or item that stands out and adds interest. It's really fun in art and in fashion.
For my shoes I've started wearing dancing heels which help my flat feet lol and look stylish. Heel insoles help too, as well as the product Shoe Gummi. I still can't last more than 2, 3 hours at most but it's definitely bearable compared to before.
Matching pajamas and loungewear. You just feel so luxurious dressing up at home and they can (should) be comfy :)
Accessories:

Makeup

I used the youtube channel Dear Peachie to help me with finding eye looks, brows, blush placement for my face shape
I have a low visual weight face and I am a romantic ingenue, because of this I go for more subtle looks that emphasis two facial features maximum at a time (eyes, lips, cheeks).
Don't get me wrong I love glam bold makeup but soft and subtle makes me glow, I turn heads when my makeup is done like this.

Teeth

Skin

Skincare. This was something that took me a while to work on because of my PCOS, age, weight and etc.
Facial Care: The basics includes chemical exfoliation, retinol, moisturizerecover. I cycle my nightly skincare routine with this in mind and always keep the same morning routine. Mornings look like this (Jojoba oil to help while I use my gua sha, Water based cleanser, eye cream, vitamin c/peptide serum, moisturizer with a drop or two of glycerin, spearmint oil mixed with face cream on the jawline & neck area, finish with sunscreen).
My nights I alternate these routines in this order
Night 1 - Chemical Exfoliation (Oil cleanser to help while I use my gua sha, Water based cleanser, eye cream, glycolic/lactic acid, moisturizer with a drop or two of glycerin, spearmint oil mixed with face cream on the jawline & neck area, castor oil on lashes and brows)
Night 2 - Retinol (Oil cleanser to help while I use my gua sha, Water based cleanser, eye cream, retinol, moisturizer, spearmint oil mixed with face cream on the jawline & neck area, castor oil on lashes and brows)
Night 3 - MoisturizeRecovery (Oil cleanser to help while I use my gua sha, Water based cleanser, eye cream, retinol, moisturizer with a drop or two of glycerin, rosehip oil as sealant on entire face, spearmint oil mixed with face cream on the jawline & neck area, castor oil on lashes and brows)
Repeat Night 1 - 3 (sometimes I need more days to recover if my skin is sensitive or acting up, do what works for you personally)
Other things that I've done/used to help: red light therapy (helps with both hair growth, so I use it on my scalp, and with stretch marks so I use it on my face and body), Microcurrent device (helps with collagen production and stretchmarks) - I use the brand NuFace & NuBody, Volufiline (a skin serum I mix with eye cream that helps with hollowness under the eyes, Kigelia Africana Skin Cream (I use the brand Maelys B-Perky which contains this ingredient and helped to tighten my chest area and my loose skin on the area), face yoga and myo fascia face massage, these help with the tautness of my face (basically everything else helps with wrinkles, these exercises and the microcurrent helps and prevents, sagging especially jowls). I follow tutorials I search for from youtube.
Body Care: Similar to facial care body care includes exfoliation, retinol, moisturizerecover
Night 1 - Physical Exfoliation (Dry brush/Body Scrub, Hydrating lotion with a few drops of glycerin, rosehip oil as sealant on entire body)
Night 2 - Retinol (Jojoba oil to help while I use my gua sha, retinol body wash, retinol body lotion)
Night 3 - MoisturizeRecovery (Jojoba oil to help while I use my gua sha, Hydrating lotion with a few drops of glycerin, rosehip oil as sealant on entire body)
Again, repeat Night 1 - 3 use more days for recovery if needed
Stretch marks/loose skin: Whether due to weight gain, pregnancy, etc. we can't ever truly get rid of loose skin or stretch marks but moisturizing the skin and derma rolling can help with the appearance. Especially derma rolling. Do NOT derma roll while pregnant but you can do so after when you’ve recovered and talk to your doctor (if you've had a c section you have to wait before derma rolling). I used this video as motivation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChG8aSvEU6A
For the body I never went beyond 1.5mm it worked for my deepest stretch marks. If this is too aggressive 1.0mm still works just as well. Make sure you use 70% alcohol as this is what experts say is better at disinfecting. It has more water, which helps it to dissolve more slowly, penetrate cells, and kill bacteria. The disinfecting power of rubbing alcohol drops at concentrations higher than 80%-85%. Make sure you disinfect the derma roller before and after use, and make sure you disinfect your area of contact before rolling as well. Do not do heavy workouts workout or sweat inducing activities for at least 3 days after and avoid harsh products.
I started derma rolling while working on losing weight (at the beginning of my journey while still obese) and continued a year after losing 130lbs. Derma rolling works by causing micro tears, the skin heals the area and in the process of doing so develops more collagen - leading to thicker skin, lighter stretch marks and tighter skin. Since I did this before losing the weight it helped my skin adapt a lot. I won't pretend like I have 0 loose skin or stretch marks but it's barely visible. Someone has to be intimately close to notice. Obviously genetics, how slowly you lose the weight, diet, and moisturizing the skin helps but my PCOS contributed to low collagen (thin skin) and so the derma rolling really helped.

Weight loss vs Fat loss

Tons of info here but I promise if you read through it helps to know this stuff.
Weightloss comes down to calories in versus calories out. I know that's rudely simpliflied and not that easy, but it truly is the answer to weightloss (which may be fat, water, or muscle). This is why people can eat barely nothing, lose weight but their shape stays the same (basically skinny fat). It's also why fasting or going low carb works so fast (water weight is the first to go).
Fatloss on the other hand is more complicated. This involves our TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure).
TDEE includes: Resting/Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Metabolic Equivalent of Task or Exercise activity thermogenesis (EAT), Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT), Thermic Effect of Food (TEF), and Adaptive Thermogenesis (AT).
BMR (~70% daily energy) the energy taken to exist, so tasks like breathing. Your sex, body composition (muscle to fat ratio), age, and genetics play a role in this EAT (~5% daily energy) the energy taken for exercise weight lifting, swimming, high intensity walks, etc. NEAT (~15% daily energy) the energy taken for non exercise movements like walking, fidgeting, showering, standing, etc TEF (~10% daily energy depending on the macronutrients of your meal) the energy taken to digest, protein has the highest TEF of all the macronutrients, Carbs have a TEF of around 5-10%, while Fats have the lowest TEF, around 0-3%.
Adaptive Thermogenesis (AT) is the changes in energy expenditure (energy used) that occur in response to changes in energy balance. For example when you eat more food than you need, your body may increase energy expenditure to prevent weight gain eg. move more, eat less the next day, etc.. On the other hand, when you eat less food than you need, your body may decrease energy expenditure to conserve energy and prevent weight loss eg. less movement, eat more the next day.
Other things that affect AT include diet composition (eg high/low protein, high/low carb, calorie dense foods, etc), physical activity (eg. weights vs. cardio), and environmental factors such as temperature and altitude.
Things that influence AT can make weight management challenging, as it can lead to plateaus or rebounds in weight loss efforts. This is why lack of sleep, hormonal issues, aging, etc. makes weightloss harder.
Here is a clearer example of this
Things that affect calories in:
Things that affect calories out:

Healthy Fat loss

So to lose fat in a healthy way you need to:
  1. Get enough sleep (8-9 hours per night)
  2. Manage your stress levels/nervous system regulation
  3. Look after your gut health
  4. Manage inflammation
  5. Increase your daily steps (8-10k per day)
  6. Weight lift
  7. Eat high protein (protein takes the most amount of energy to digest).
  8. Manage your insulin resistence
  9. Eat in a caloric deficit (make sure your calories in do not exceed calories out).
Futher information about the bold items in the list is included below. Also, I know this all seems overwhelming but keep in mind you are creating a lifestyle change. This is not a quick fix.
To manage your insulin resistance (info from the book Glucose Goddess by Jessie Inchauspé):
To eat in a caloric deficit, calculate your TDEE and subtract 200-500 calories from that number. I like using this calculator. https://tdeecalculator.net
Eg. If it's calculated to be 2000 calories, you subtract 200, so 1800 should be your daily calorie intake. For the activity levels make sure you do not oversell yourself. Here is a general guide:
As you lose weight your body adapts so after a while you may need to recalculate your TDEE and deficit. Once you are at your ideal weight, you no longer subtract the 200-500, you simply eat the TDEE amount to maintain but you do this gradually. After I lost the weight I came out of the deficit by adding 50 calories to my daily intake per week, till I was at maintenance/my TDEE. This prevented me from gaining fat or water weight.
Lastly, muscle mass (increase in muscle raises your metabolic level, meaning you burn more calories at rest). This is ideal and is also how you'll see someone who is short, seemingly small but weigh more than you imagined. Muscle density weighs more than fat. Think of a 50 pound dumbbell versus 50 pounds of feathers, you would need a whole lot of feathers to match the weight. Same difference, you need a larger volume of fat to equal to the same amount of muscle. Therefore, lifting weights is ideal because you will become more toned, burn more calories at rest, be able to eat more even when you've lost the weight to maintain your phisique, you'll be more insulin sensitive, and you will have stronger and higher bone density (really important for women, we lose up to 5% of muscle mass per decade after the age of 30).

Body Recompositon: Weightlifting for health (and aesthetics), lose fat & gain muscle

It is possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. I followed Huskular Goddess and and LexiiGettingFit for inspiration and they were really the ones that opened my eyes to the concept of body recomposition (gain musle while losing fat).
The benefits of this is as you're getting smaller your TDEE is increasing. This means by the time you lose the weight you'll still be eating an adequate amount. The other benefits include insulin sensitivity versus insulin resistence, higher metabolism, and a improved body composition like I mentioned before in the dummbell versus feather example. The downside is the number on the scale won't have a dramatic shift while your clothes will be fitting looser. Again, weight density plays tricks on us and it's easy to get caught up in body dismorphia but I promise it works.
In order to sustain and build muscle while losing fat, you need to be consuming enough protein while remaining in a caloric deficit. So 60-80g of protein per day minimum to lose 1-2lbs per week. Ideally it should be 0.8-1g of per pound of lean body mass. Eg, someone is 300lbs and they want to get down to 150lbs. They would eat 120-150g of protein per day. If this is too much, try to get at least 60-80g like I mentioned before. Remember even though 1-2lbs per week sounds small, the changes are significant because of the muscle gained. You will look and feel smaller.
Weightlifting for a rounder booty (I reshaped my glutes by weightlifting. Hormones can actually affect the shape and my PCOS did a number on me. I developed a V shape over the years. Round, square, heart, A shapes are all based on your bone structure and fat placement. Some of us just have those stubborn fat deposits in certain areas that are genetic, even when we lose the weight, it's a smaller version but the same shape. V shape on the other hand is largely seen in older women post menopause and in younger women with hormonal disorders. This is becuase the hormonal imbalances also causes muscle imbalances. Regulating your hormones helps but it won't grow the muscles for you, so I used Fit With Emely's glute guide based on your glute shape (completely free, I watched all her videos to get this info and it took me two years to go from a V shape to a round shape.
Here is the guideline for each shape:
Glute Maximus - Everyone should be working on glute maximus. It builds the shelf and overall size. Step ups (all variations), hip thrusts (all variations), lunges, rdl, leg press, all squat variations Glute Minimus - (V and Square shapes), this muscle fills in the middle between the top and lower glute. Hip abduction, single leg bridge, Standing hip abduction/cable raises Gute Medius - (Heart, Round, and A-shaped) this muscles builds a longer hip for top portion of the glutes. Eg. Single leg squat, Single leg deadlift, Cable clamshells, Reverse lung, step ups Underbutt - Everyone should be working on underbutt but this is especially useful for V shaped folks. It works the hamstrings and lower portion of glutes. Good mornings, single leg rdl (also works minimus), single leg hip thrust (also works maximus), hip abductors (also works minimus)
How to structure workout:
Keep in mind that you only need to work on a muscle group 2-3 times a week. So I only do glutes Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Also keep in mind while I work the lower body I am also working my upper body (eg. while doing rdls I am lifting the weight with my upper body), which is why I don't have tailered upper body days, this is for aesthetic reasons, and because weightlifting more than 3 days per week is not feasible with my PCOS.
My full routine is:
I also used primarily resistance bands in the beginning because gym equipment intimidated me (not anymore :) ). I started with 25lb resistance and went up to 125lbs. I use the product BandBar which allowed me to use the resistance bands like a barbell at home. This isn’t the only option and you can definitely buy resistance bands and do it without the bar. BandBar
For the ab separation from being obese, I did this workout 3 times a week (also helpful post pregnancy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smiGsW-mQX0
For my chest to help with getting perkier boobs (the derma rolling was what made the biggest difference, but this exercise helped as well though it took 6+ months for the changes to be significant. Women tend to take longer to grow chest muscles): https://youtu.be/hg7_R29jGIE?feature=shared
I also did workouts to help with my posture and mobility 3 times a week (any I could find online)
The last thing I will say is be mindful that you may gain weight initially when you start lifting weights. This is due to slight inflammation/water gain from foreign tension, which will last about a month or two before you adapt BUT your body will adapt, I promise. Keep in mind if it's days before your period or if you are on your period. It's not if, but when, our weight fluctuates. As long as you are in a deficit and doing everything right, the number will go down. Do not get discouraged!!!
Here is the edit to this post which includes my supplements, how I managed my inflammation, and how I improved my gut health. I also edited the information I shared prior to include a few more tips and lifestyle changes I made, and included a few more details. I also rearranged things so there is a separation between style/haiskin and health information. The post is getting really long so I may create a separate post for personal development/mindset tips.

Inflammation

In my case my inflammation was caused by my PCOS, insulin resistence and my obesity, but it can be caused by chronic stress, other autoimmune disorders like IBS, Crohn's disease, etc, smoking/alcohol, age related diseases, environmental toxins, diets high in processed foods, sugars, trans fats & high omega-6 fatty acids.
In my case the inflammation from the PCOS led to gut inflammation due to the high levels of coritsal (stress hormones) in reaction to the high testosterone and insulin resistence. I also experienced metabolic inflammation (non alcoholic fatty liver disease), skin inflammation (as I mentioned earlier the ezcema on my scalp, alopecia, and hirsutism), adipose tissue inflammation, chronic low grade inflammation (this led to edema or fuid retention -> insulin resistance and my high testosteron/androgen levels also exacerbated this).
To fix this these were the thin I added to my life:

Gut Health

Your microbiota needs the right bacteria in the right amount to perform its hormone regulating functions properly. When the type or number of bacteria gets disturbed by events such as stress, or poor diet, or your gut can no longer accomplish its job meaning you'll have inflammation, increased risk of chronic disease, skin conditions, mental health issues, weakened immune system, nutrient absorprion problems, and weight management challenges.
For weight loss issues, gut microbiomes influence hormones in producing and signaling leptin and ghrelin (these hormones regulate hunger and fullness signals). Inflammation and insulin resistence is also associated with gut health problems as mentioned before. Energy extraction from foods, certain gut bacteria are more efficient at extracting energy from food, particularly carbohydrates. When there is an imbalance, more calories can be absorbed from food leading to difficulties gaining or losing weight.
Things I did to improve gut health/intestinal permeability:

Lower androgens/testosterone

Nervous System Regulation/ Stress Management

Stress is one of the things that age us the most, and people with PCOS already have higher levels of cortisol so these are the things I do to manage my stress levels:

Tea cycle

The best teas for PCOS

Seed Cycling

What is seed cycling? Seed cycling refers to the consumption of specific seeds at different times of the month in order to improve the production and levels of sex hormones, specifically estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
Seed cycling divides the female menstrual cycle into two parts:
  1. During the first half of the menstrual cycle, or days 1 through 14, seed cycling encourages daily consumption of flax and pumpkin seeds.
  2. During the second half of the menstrual cycle, or days 15 through 28, seed cycling encourages daily consumption of sunflower and sesame seeds
Results from seed cycling will not happen overnight. Normally women observe improvements after approximately three months of seed cycling adherence. It took me about 4ish months.
The Benefits of Seed Cycling: Support hormonal balance, alleviate PMS symptoms, decrease hormonal acne, alter irregularity of menstrual cycles, and fight stomach bloating and fatigue.

2024.05.11 01:45 Tormentula Elise is in desperate need of clean up (bug fixes) and QoL Changes

Recently u/Reav3 posted this graph showing Elise is one of the least popular champs in the game, and while she is weak, I want to talk about just her bugs and weird interactions that make her very frustrating to play, especially for newer elise players that aren't aware of these issues. Elise mains have been asking for years to fix them and her playrate is just declining more and more while we're losing mains due how neglected she is to the point she's just seen as a 'low priority' champ that saturated in winrate from player loss despite her once being a very popular and borderline iconic champion. We actually have to play around these bugs and consider them when fighting/diving etc which just adds more complication to an already high risk character.

Volatile Spiderling

Missing explosion audio for 7 months now
Zhanos attempted to do rescripts on Elise which were revealed on 13.20 PBE, this did not go well.. it was incredibly buggy and had to be put back in the oven until eventually just iceboxed.
However since reverting them, Volatile Spiderling lost its W explosion audio on all skins, its just depressing they're letting her deteriorate like this and not fixing it especially since this bug was introduced while trying to clean her up and prevent more bugs from developing to begin with. Venomous Bite also lost audio for the entire patch but got fixed the next patch later.
The Spiderling will just run past targets
This is super frustrating; W scans for a target to explode on/aggro to every 8 frames (0.264s, or internally coded as 0.25s), this means it will sometimes go past units or ignore the ones you want if it doesn't detect anything in its driveby, its so fucking frequent too.
Example 1
Example 2
Repro

Rappel

E recast is shorter range than Right Click casting.
Rappel can be self-casted, target casted, or ground casted, in which it then unlocks the 2nd part called "SpiderEDescent". You can either not cast anything to stay in the air, or you can recast to drop on a neutral or enemy unit thats selectable.... Now if you're new to Elise, you'll probably wonder "should I use E or right click? when descending" and if you got comfortable using E, you're griefing yourself because E currently uses center-to-center cast range while right clicking uses edge to edge cast range. Basically, Right Clicking will always outrange E casting and some units (such as red side wolves) are completely inaccessible without using the Right Click version.
A 2nd part to this bug is the VFX, when elise is in the air, some VFX shows beneath the target (its hard to see but you'll see little spiders and a ring on them, withered rose is the most obvious), the VFX doesn't actually show up for units still in the edge-to-edge range, so if you're relying on the VFX to tell you what is in your range, don't, its useless.
Solution: Honestly just remove the edge-to-edge (or 900 c2c? It could be 900 c2c on right click and 700 e2e on E cast) part, 1: rappel has too much power budget, we'll get over the range nerf eventually and by doing so you'll solve the VFX and the inconsistency problems at once, otherwise the VFX would additionally need fixed to account for the bigger range if E recast was bumped up to match, and I don't know how simple that is going to be. You could either make right-click match the E cast range, or remove the right click and tell elise players "get used to E now", either one would solve this and long term be more fair for newer players since this isn't common knowledge outside of Elise Mains.
Rappel has a proximity issue when target casting
If you self cast (Alt+E), you ascend without risking accidentally clicking on something, if you target someone, you'll ascend and then descend immediately and get an amp bonus to your passive onhit and healing. However, if you target cast rappel while within someone's radius, you will actually register it as a 'self cast' rappel instead???. In this clip, I'm standing next to the target, pressing E, but its keeping me in the air.
Now believe it or not, this is episode 2 of this rappel bug.. because it used to be self casting rappel while within the enemy's radius would cause elise to register rappel as targetted, making her descend immediately back down and probably get her killed/throw the game, the version we have now is a bandaid to a less game losing version.
Solution: They didn't fix it right the first time, so idk what the hell is going on to pitch a solution but its likely casting 'location' rather than 'target'.
Towers sometimes aggro Elise or Spiderlings when she descends
Bare with me here; On v3.10 riot nerfed elise in a way that towers; with no other allies or minions under them just elise, elise herself would be aggro'd upon descending. However on live, it is currently inconsistent as towers will either aggro Elise or Spiderlings when rappel descends, based on the server frame they were activated in.
Demonstration of two towers having reverse behaviors
Now the issue is you can't basically go in PT and test every tower, because towers load in a seemingly random order, so game by game you can't rely on discovering how the aggro mechanics of specific towers work, however once you do figure it out, that tower will consistently replicate that behavior for seemingly the entire game.
To explain a little better... if tower 1 activates on frame 1, tower 2 activates on frame 2, and tower 3 activates on frame 3, but elise's rappel is desync'd and elise drops frame 1, spiderlings frame 2, this means tower 3 would always detect spiderlings are present on its scans, but tower 1 would detect elise and properly aggro her instead.
Its entirely possible an Elise dive worked without giving away her shutdown or trading 1 for 1 in a pro game based on if spiderlings saved her or not when dropping, and it would be purely due to RNG at start of the game. Tower activation randomly and on different server ticks is actually smart to do because if they scanned on the same server frame all at once you'd notice a framerate drop each time from all doing their scan together, randomness is the only reason we actually can't abuse this mechanic.
Solution: Increase the delay between when spiderlings drop after elise so all towers get at least one cycle off to detect spiders instead of her.

Cocoon-Flash

This isn't a bug, this is just an oversight when they designed her. Currently if you Flash then cocoon, cocoon will launch from cast location instead of champion location (Ahri flash charm will consistently work whether you meant to EF or FE), this results in a lot of players attempting to do cocoon flash and basically throwing the game, especially new ones if they aren't aware of how it works and expect it to be like how other champions do. This would be a QoL adjustment that would frustrate less players that want to make a big play but end up pressing EF too fast on accident or be on too high ping to efficiently do F then E.
There's a ton of other issues, like her Bite+Volatile Spiderling interaction, but these are the things I've been asking for years to get fixed so she doesn't just become an obsolete forgotten champ cause she is genuinely fine visually and has a fun kit, just they hit her in wrong areas when nerfing and we have all these issues on top of it we elise players had to treat as 'features' for too long now.
EDIT: Cocoon auto targets bottom left corner of map if used right after transforming
https://youtu.be/TohauTVP9Yk
This is one I forgot about, not sure why it happens but it seems to lose whatever position you meant to fire cocoon towards right after transform, and defaults to 0,0 instead.
