He has a 5 stars martial education, several children ready to create alliences with, can get claims to the entirety of the kingdom of Sicily and the duchy of Spoleto + he gets a event to put a pretender on the byzantine throne with which he gets the entirety of the kingdom of Epirus, and if that wasn't enough he also gets a strong hook over the new basileus. that's crazy op

We are visiting Brač for 10 days at the end of June. We have a shy 16 year old with us and are hoping that the island will provide a combination of beaches and social opportunities. We are also hoping to visit Split and perhaps some surrounding tours?
My husband and I visited Zadar a few years ago and I have been to Dubrovnik, Lopud and Koločep as a child. Croatia has a very special place in my soul and I want to share that with my daughter and husband.
So interested in a few things:
1) Currently have two hotel options. Grand Hotel in Postira or Bluesun Hotel Elaphusa in Bol. Currently leaning towards Bol as it might have a more lively town?
2) Transport between Split and Bol/Brač and Hvar seems expensive, complicated and sparse. Is this correct?
3) Assuming we can get transport off the island. What should we see?
4) What should we see on the island?
5) Reassure me that this is the right choice! We had originally looked at staying in Split, but things were sold out and priced out....so thought perhaps an island. But now I'm worried.
Thanks in advance for any local advice!

2024.05.18 22:41 rss77777 International Roaming Observations

I'm a helium mobile fan. Running both a CBRS radio and indoor WiFi hotspot. I visited a few European countries and here are my results with the International Roaming option ($15).
Venice got some 5G and H+ coverage. 53 MB down, 2MB on a few random speed tests. Croatia got H+ coverage - 4 MB down/2 MB up on speed test. Montenegro - 5G Coverage - 8MB down/11MB up on speed test. Athens, Nafpilion, and Corfu Greece - got 2G/ Edge coverage. Speed tests failed. Useless in all Greek locations and islands visited.
H+ stands for High Speed Packet Access, which is a 3G term. All I really needed data for was for Google Maps and it worked fine in Venice, Croatia, and Montenegro. For Greece I wound up downloading a Sally ESIM. I paid $4.49 for 1GB prepaid data access that was available for 3 days.
Texting seemed to always work fine. Voice worked for all test calls I made to UK, Greece, Australia. Some test calls to US failed (rang 4 times then dropped).
So net net, next time I travel outside of the USA, I will buy the $15 Helium International Roaming plan and always have an ESIM as a plan B.

2024.05.17 23:37 No_Run2260 Around the World in Eighty Weeks - Week #51 - Ethiopia

Around the World in Eighty Weeks - Week #51 - Ethiopia
If you want film suggestions, suggestions for foreign works, suggestions on how to complete the Letterboxd world map, this post is for you.
Last year I started this project to discuss more unknown foreign films. Everyone here I imagine has heard about Parasite, Spirited Away, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, The Hunt, City of God. But what gems does each country's cinema have that are not as celebrated as these?
The plan is, over 80 weeks, to approach as many countries as possible, from those with a more established film industry to those that need foreign support to finance a production. During the post I suggest one or two films and in the comments you can add what you know about the country in question. I'll stick to films with less than 50k views, but you can highlight any film (or director) from that specific country in the comments.
With that said, let's go to the recommendation of the week.
Film: Faya Dayi
Year: 2021
Director: Jessica Beshir
Country: Ethiopia/USA
https://preview.redd.it/9om488na121d1.png?width=850&format=png&auto=webp&s=caf4ce431e8d9d500c596fe5454c2ce1c4e44400
In the first post of this project I made, I talked about a documentary that in a peculiar way mixes reality with fiction. (More than) Fifty weeks later, I bring you an even more transgressive one. The boundaries of documentary and drama are so thin that even after finishing the film it is not possible to say where one begins and the other ends.
The fact is that the director, Jessica Beshir, initially envisioned a traditional documentary about the cultivation of khat, a psychoactive plant that is important both economically and culturally for Ethiopia. Spending time on the farms, she preferred to focus on the experience of the individuals who work there. Even so, it was possible to do traditional work addressing the workers' reality, but the director went a step further. Faya Dayi focuses on the abstract: on the dreams and memories of those people and their relation with the plant.
There are no interviews and those who mediate the conversation are the characters themselves talking to each other. But, the vast majority of them, the viewer doesn't learn anything about. The audience simply follows them in this meditative state, with images that symbolize their memories or their dreams. Even defining which is which is difficult since there is little to grasp here. The main characters are two boys who can't wait to get out of there - one even emigrated, but returned because of his mother - and I feel that they sum up well the main feeling that the film wants to convey - escaping that reality, whether physically or in a spiritual state.
The documentary takes advantage of the fact that it is about a plant with psychoactive properties to immerse you in a state of daydreaming. At the same time, the black and white cinematography brings melancholy, which creates this contrast of fantasies, but without the euphoria that is expected.
Honestly, there is very little that can be said about this film, as it is a sensory experience. The most obvious reference I can make is Apichatpong Weerasethakul. In fact, the film also mixes reality with local folklore and it is interesting to see how the khat legend is fitted into the narrative. Overall, one of the most unique things I've ever seen.
Suggestion made, your turn to complement it. If you know of any other Ethiopian films and want to share them, the space in the comments is for that. As always, I remind you that any other comments, feedback or suggestions for this project are always welcome.
Next week: These two countries used to be one. From Central Europe - Czech Republic and Slovakia.

2024.05.17 05:19 Locke_John Self guided Game of Thrones tour?

Hey, I’m going travelling again soon and will be spending a few nights in Croatia as part of my trip and at least a couple of those will be in Dubrovnik.
I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan and will be looking to see as much of the filming locations as possible while there - I was originally planning on doing a tour but they’re fairly expensive compared to the tight daily budget that I’m on. I’ve seen the show many times and read the books so I don’t need scenes etc explained to me, the only thing I’d need to pay a tour guide for is to get me to areas that I otherwise wouldn’t have access to, so I was wondering if it’s possible to essentially go to all the same spots myself without a guide?
Thank you!

2024.05.16 04:07 nkl0h3 Hvar Ferries Question

Hello! I my fiance and I will be honeymooning in Croatia next month. We'll be going from Dubrovnik to Hvar to Split. Quick question about the ferries – I found 2 options: Krilo Catamaran and TP Line. Is there a preferred or recommended one?
Also I see that they both have luggage limits (one is 23kg and one is 20kg). Do they allow for personal items + luggage? We'll both have suitcases of about 15-20kg plus backpacks, but are wondering if we'd get turned away.
Thanks!

2024.05.15 21:06 Inspireme21 Europe travel itinerary help!

I was wondering how the logical order of this itinerary for next year sounds like?
2025 July
Toronto Canada to London (3 days), Paris (4 days), train to Belgium- Bruges (2 days), train to Amsterdam (3 days). Fly to Copenhagen Denmark for 3 days. Fly to Berlin Germany for 3 days. Train to Munich for 3 days. Fly from Munich Germany to Croatia Split spend 3 days. Then ferry to Dubrovnik and spend 3 days. Then Fly to Athens Greece spend 1 day then next day early morning ferry for 7am to Santorini for 3 days then ferry to Athens spend 3 days back to Toronto Canada.
Does this logical order make sense?
Thank you!

2024.05.14 20:48 TheActualForrestGump I sit here in Boston airport, reflecting on a wonderful 3 days in Dublin

My wife and I have finished up our 2 week honeymoon and man was it a blast. We were lucky enough to follow up 10 days in Croatia with 3 days in Dublin before coming home (stayed near Dartry.. beautiful, quiet area). Here are my takeaways:
The people are wonderful
From our first Uber driver to the friendly pubs and the considerate strangers on the Dart.. most everyone was so welcoming and willing to help if we had any questions. It reminded me of the Midwest nice that we experience here in the states. The main highlight here was having a great conversation with the gentlemen that played at Trinity Bar on Sunday night - I believe they are called Shamrock(?). We told them about out little girl coming in September and they were nice enough to give us a CD.. so cool!
Temple Bar area is cool in moderation
This area provided the energy, for sure. But it was a weekend, very nice out, so you had a lot of numbskulls out and about. But really really fun nonetheless. Trinity Bar was the perfect stop for us because it was very close, but not nearly as busy or outrageously priced in comparison.
Doheny Nesbits & Devitts ... A+
Two really enjoyable experiences we had were at these pubs. Loved the general vibe, as well as the food and drink quality. I will definitely be back.
Public transport is fairly easy (TFI Live app.. meh)
We bought two Ubers our entire time in Dublin. The public transportation is great. But I have one gripe. The TFI Live app is only 1 or 2 really smart tech people from becoming an amazing app. Why hasn't anyone figured that out? The user experience is quite poor. While learning the system, it's a headache trying to figure out exactly where each stop is, having to bounce around between 2 sections of the app, as well as looking at Google Maps at the same time.
On the topic of transportation.....
GET THE VISITOR LEAP CARD
Just do it.
Wonderful breakfasts
Beanhive Coffee (right near Stephen's Green), and Lark Cafe. DELICIOUS.
EPIC Museum
The emigration history of Ireland was very fascinating to both of us. Ireland has such a complicated history, and I'm not sure there's any other history like it in the world (granted, I'm no expert). I would love to do more research sometime into this stuff because my wife has lots of Irish in her family tree, and I believe I would find a little bit of it in mine.
Final thoughts...
I just really wish we had more time there, but I think this solidified one thing for me, and that's that I will definitely be coming back to Ireland. From south of Dublin, to the Guinness tour, to our Howth adventure.. everything was different, but a lot of fun. Makes me excited to see what else Ireland has to offer. I'm also a huge lover of golf and golf history, so this is another reason I want to come back.
EDIT: 1 addition.. we kept noticing that the Irish are fit and healthy. It was refreshing seeing human beings that take care of themselves. Meanwhile I sit here in Chicago at breakfast and 1/3 of the people around me are obese.
I think the Irish life expectancy is like 5 years longer than in the US, and it’s easy to understand why.
UNTIL NEXT TIME!

2024.05.14 12:27 PhoenixFllies777 Judoka in MMA / High-level Judo use in MMA (List)

Judo is extremely underrated in MMA. It is definitely under-represented as well, due to a multitude of reasons (MMA is no-gi, Judo doesn't train leg attacks, IJF bans its top athletes from cross-competing, most MMA is in the USA where Judo sucks and wrestling is world-class, etc etc), but Judo is still very much used in MMA. The problem is many times, nobody recognizes it. American MMA commentators are also almost always completely clueless when it comes to Judo, which doesn't help (you need not go any further than Karo Parisyan basically going through half the Gokyo on his opponents, only to be greeted with the same OH MY GOD ! JUDO THROW! by Joe Rogan). There are many fighters, both superstars (Islam, Fedor) and not (Gregory Rodrigues, Luana Pinheiro) who heavily use Judo in their matches.
Over the years, I have actively been looking for Judo in MMA. I am going to share my list of fighters displaying high level Judo in MMA, as a reference point for anyone looking to see how the art is used in MMA, or even for anyone just looking to see some banging throws. The list is by no means exhaustive. I would love for people more knowledgeable than me to add fighters I may have missed.
Disclaimer: Let's focus on Judo use in MMA. There are several fighters who have a background, even a black belt, in Judo but don't really use it (Amanda Nunes, Valentina Shevchenko, Merab Dvalishvili, Shinya Aoki, Seika Izawa, Fabricio Werdum, Ronaldo Jacare Souza just off the top of my head). Also yes, Morote Gari is a leg takedown, and it is in the Judo syllabus. Almost nobody learned double legs in Judo, let's not go to these extremes.
Karo Parisyan
The OG of Judo in MMA, the man who single-handedly put Judo on the MMA map. Judo is displayed in all of his matches; several Youtube breakdowns and highlights exist as well. He also put out a Judo for MMA instructional which is gold, if you can get your hands on it. Unfortunately he got derailed by personal issues (I hear he's doing better now thankfully). Huge variety of throws, he used throws nobody else has used before or after against very high level opponents. Shoutout to his kimura grip hikikomi gaeshi that he almost beat GSP with.
Ronda Rousey
UFC champion, Olympic bronze medalist, WMMA pioneer - you know her, everyone knows her. Extremely one-dimensional, but a pioneer for her time. Her entire game plan was clinch JUDO THROW juji gatame (armbar). Shoutout to her textbook use of hip toss into kesa gatame into roflstomp (vs Alexis Davis). Her matches with Miesha Tate are also among the best MMA matches (male or female).
Fedor Emelianenko
PRIDE champion. Arguably the Heavyweight GOAT. Probably the best example of Judo adapted to MMA (together with Islam), as he did not rely on Judo as much as Karo or Ronda, but perfectly blended it with his striking to create an unstoppable force. I'd heavily recommend watching Sonny Brown's Fedor breakdown on Youtube, or pretty much any one of Fedor's matches, they're awesome. Shoutout to his use of the overhand right to switch stances when initiating clinches (as a R-handed Judo fighter fighting out of an Orthodox stance).
Islam Makhachev
UFC champion. Ideal example of Judo adapted to MMA. Yes, he's a Dagestani, and he has been training in MMA all his life, so obviously his style is not purely Judo, but it's obvious to anyone who knows where to look that his grappling base is more Judo than wrestling based. Shoutout to him submitting Charles Oliveira, the most prolific BJJ specialist in MMA history, with a Kata Gatame (arm-triangle choke, routinely taught in Judo as a pin with submission potential). His style is also very different from Khabib, who I will not include in this list for the opposite reason; his grappling base was significantly more wrestling based (although he did execute some ridiculously perfect Judo throws on occasion). The entire Khabib camp uses both Judo and wrestling though.
Jon Jones
UFC Champion. Contender for all-time GOAT. Is Jon Jones a Judoka? Nope. Do his matches feature Judo? Absolutely. You only need to watch one of his highlight reels to see a variety of Judo throws, Osoto Gari, Harai Goshi, Tai Otoshi, Sasae, a variety of Kosotos, along with his wrestling-based takedowns. He also uses a lot of inside trips, obviously from wrestling, but he's still a good example of how to use Ouchi Gari in MMA.
Jimmy Hettes
UFC former fighter. Old-school prolific grappler. Very high level Judo and BJJ. Did not have many matches, but they were all grappling clinics, and every one included a multitude of Judo throws (mainly Harai Goshi).
Kayla Harrison
PFL tournament winner. Double Olympic gold medalist. Her recent UFC debut against Holly Holm featured a Harai and a brutal Osoto Gari into a finishing choke.
Yoshihiro Akiyama (Sexiyama)
Heavy Judo base. Struggled in the UFC, but had some banging throws. Still competes at almost 50. Also his nickname was Sexy, can't go wrong with that.
Hector Lombard
Judo Olympian. Heavy Judo base as well, with very slick throws, although he preferred to stand and bang. Was once one of the hottest non-UFC MMA prospects, his career took a massive dive after he got popped for roids.
Satoshi Ishii
Judo Gold medalist. Heavy Judo base. Fought in a variety of promotions around the world, an absolute dog but with average results. He got brutally destroyed by Cro Cop, then went to train with him in Croatia, then denounced his citizenship and became a Croatian citizen. Lol. Also trains with Danaher, and has a bunch of no-gi Judo instructionals at ridiculous prices (because Danaher).
Serghei Spivac
UFC Heavyweight contender. Ragdolls everyone with sloppy but effective Judo throws. Shoutout to his landing in Kesa Gatame too.
Luana Pinheiro
UFC fighter. Judo black belt, (I believe) Olympic alternate. Uses Judo as her main offensive grappling base, has taken down all of her opponents with the same Harai Goshi / O Guruma hybrid.
Gregory Rodrigues
UFC fighter. ?Relative unknown. I personally never heard of him, until I randomly came across one of his matches were he executed one of the most brutal Harai's I've ever seen into a finish. All of his matches feature some degree of Judo, mainly uses Harai. No recorded Judo rank on his wiki (he's recorded as a heavily credentialed BJJ blackbelt), but it's obvious he has Judo training. Also very good wrestling and kickboxing (yes, he's very exciting to watch). Shoutout to his match against Brunno Fereira, a Judo black belt who escaped top position from Rodrigues by securing an Ippon grip, rolling to his knees, and chucking Rodrigues forward with a kneeling Ippon Seoi before brutally KO'ing him a few seconds later.
Tagir Ulanbekov
UFC fighter. Khabib's camp. Uses a lot of clinch takedowns. An absolute specialist in step around throws (I believe it's called "Polish" in wrestling?) - in Judo terms it would be Kosoto Gake +/- Ura Nage depending how you finish it.
Ayaka Miura
ONE Championship fighter. Heavy Judo base. Shoutout to her use of Kesa Gatame to finish opponents.
Rick Hawn
Judo Olympian. Twice fought for the Bellator championship. Unfortunately, I have not watched any of his actual matches, so I cannot confirm how much Judo he uses (I'd love for someone to chime in). Still has a highlight-reel standing Ippon Seoi Nage into KO, so I had to include him.
..
Honorable mention to Yoel Romero, an absolute unit of an athlete. Olympic silver medalist and World champion in Freestyle wrestling, fought for UFC gold. Obviously not a Judoka but he has the cleanest Sasae you will ever see in MMA, as well as a bunch of beautiful step-around throws and inside trips you've probably learned in Judo.

2024.05.13 17:26 Mission-Tailor-4950 itinerary help: 2 weeks in balkans (flying in+out of dubrovnik)

hey guys! i'll be spending 2 weeks in the balkans in june. i have to fly in and out of Dubrovnik in order to use my employee airline discount, so that cant be changed. i'm really stressing trying to plan this trip-- there's so many places i want to see but i prefer a slower pace, probably no more than 5 locations for this trip.
places i would like to hit: dubrovnik, hvar, split, mostar, kotor
the problem is i need to circle back to dubrovnik on day 15 for my flight home on day 16, which feels inconvenient. but i'm saving money so oh well.
my travel interests: food, wine, coffee, beaches (prefer less touristy ones more in nature), nature, and adventure activities (i went off roading in portugal, bungy jumping in NZ, etc)
my rough itinerary:
day 1: nyc to dubrovnik
day 2-5: dubrovnik (longer because i always need day 2 to really rest and recuperate)
day 5: ferry to hvar
day 5-8: hvar (day trip to another island?)
here's where i'm not sure:
day 8: ferry to split(???)
day 8-11: split (planning to go rafting + either krka or plitvice day trip)
day 11: bus to mostar (should i just rent a car? seems like it would cut the time in half)
day 11-13: mostar (planning to stay in a hostel that does a tour to the waterfalls, etc)
day 13: bus to kotor
day 13-15: kotor
day 15: bus to dubrovnik
day 16: fly home
some questions:

Romania, Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia : 1-month tour across the Balkans

Hello all,
I planned a month-long trip in the Balkans, starting next week.
I am just going to share the trip and how it was planned, and the info I used as it can be useful for someone else later.
Note : The weather might not be on my side, so if any of you have original recommendations on what to do when it rains in Budapest, Timișoara, Sibiu or Belgrade, I'lll take it !
Itinerary :
  • Strasbourg-Budapest via Zurich : regional and night train. (2 nights in Budapest)
  • Budapest - Sibiu : direct night train (3 nights in Sibiu)
  • Sibiu - Timișoara : direct night bus (2 nights in Timișoara)
  • Timișoara - Belgrade : minibus shuttle (2 nights in belgrade)
  • Belgrade - Kotor : Night train and bus (3 nights in Kotor)
  • Kotor - Dubrovnik : bus (2 nights in Dubrovnik)
  • Dubrovnik - Korčula : ferry (2 nights in Korčula)
  • Korčula - Hvar : ferry (2 nights in Hvar)
  • Hvar - Split : ferry (1 night in Split)
  • Split - Zagreb : direct day train (1 night in Zagreb)
  • Zagreb - Strasbourg : Night Train via Stuttgart
Comments :
  • An alternative route is possible via Stutgart instead of Zürich. The time to go to Zürich from Strasbourg is roughly the same as to go to Stuttgart. But I think there are more frequent trains (Sunday at least).
  • The Timișoara - Belgrade route is operated via minibuses shuttles that you can book. Here is a travel report talking about it.
  • My whole trip had to be moved one week forward, making me departing earlier as planned. But I don’t want to give up some time so I just translated everything 1 week. This increase the risk of having bad weather I guess..
  • Initially I wanted to go through the iron gates between Serbia and Romania, so the cities Drobeta Turnu Severin / Kladovo. I thought there was a ferry crossing the danube, but it does not exist anymore. My guess is that they stopped it after covid, who knows. I know that it does not exist anymore, because I contacted a neighboring ferry company who told me that. I tried contacting directly the company and I never got any response. (horizont ferries between Drobeta TS and Kladovo) Hope it will reopen some day. Today the only way to cross the Danube here is by Taxi. (no buses do the route). I guess anyway that having a car in this region can be advantageous to move to cool hiking locations as some seems complicated to access by bus.
  • The last stops are only one night but serve mostly as stops and margin at the end of the trip. Will take the time to see the cities of course.
  • Planning this trip made me want to plan another across Romania and other parts of Montenegro or Serbia, damn these region looks cool.
Tips I discovered :
  • The öbb nightjet tickets are refundable (according what flex-ticket you take), only if you did not already generate the ticket PDF. After that, when the tickets PDF is generated, it is not refundable anymore. (It is written when generating the PDF)
  • The Interrail planner app is worse than I already thought.
  • The öbb planner app is good, but not perfect too. I guess there is no perfect alternative, seeing the complexity-chaos that are international train booking tickets in Europe (for example, SNCF announced that its main app will stop selling other companies tickets..). I guess the best way is still to look at a map, to train routes, night trains routes, and use multiple planners to avoid missing possible routes. (It takes time, I know, but I love doing that).
  • The Interrail pass is only woth for the night trains. Most of the trip in the Balkans are made by buses or ferry. I took a 7-day pass but I should have taken maybe a 4 or 5 day pass. Planning month ahead and taking the tickets early can be even more worth it (If you don't have to move all your trip one week earlier..)
If you have any tips, ideas or suggestions, please share !

2024.05.13 15:16 Ok_Animator6429 2.5 days in Dubrovnik

Hi there!
My friend and I will be visiting Croatia from NYC this June. (We will spend a week in Primošten before a brief stop in Dubrovnik for 2.5 days). I would be so grateful for any suggestions of things to do in Dubrovnik - the best restaurants (we don’t NEED to go to fancy places unless they’re absolute must-go’s. We’re more excited about getting an authentic taste of the city), must-do activities, etc. We love exploring by foot, walking around interesting neighborhoods, checking out markets, and being on the water. We are staying very centrally but will also have a car. Any suggestions would be so helpful! If you happen to have advice for us Primošten, we’d welcome that as well!
Best, Ari

Jacquerie (French fascist) France is often referred to by historians as the Third French Empire due to its expansionist and Anglophobic ambitions, and Jacques Dutroux is compared to Napoleon Bonaparte, especially since both lost.
During WWII, it created the following puppet states:
  • Rexist Belgium
  • The Rhineland Republic
  • The Independent State of Croatia, which is not shown on the map.
Shortly after the tripartite attack on British forces in Egypt, the French colonial forces invaded all of Britain's colonies in West Africa, and after France invaded Belgium, they also launched an attack on the Belgian Congo that captured its western half but not the eastern jungles due to the King's African Rifles holding out. Sudan was not invaded during the war.
By 1945, all of France's overseas territories, other than French Polynesia, which held out until the country surrendered, had been lost to the Allies, and postwar treaties meant France lost all of its overseas territories other than the original French West Africa, Tunisia and Algeria, all of whom later peacefully obtained independence from foreign rule.
France, Italy and Egypt managed to capture most of the latter's territory, but they failed to capture the massive base around the Suez canal twice, and their final defeat in March 1945 was a major turning point in the war.
French Indochina remained controlled by France, but it lost some territories to Thailand and gave Japan access to its territory and resources, and from 1941 onwards, much of its territory was captured by the Viet Minh, which ruled the north of the country as a communist state after 1947, while the south, Laos and Cambodia became independent kingdoms.
Martinique was captured by the United Kingdom between 17 and 19 September 1944, around the same time Brazil invaded and annexed French Guyana with the support of the United States. On the other hand, the Seychelles were reocuppied by the French colonial forces, and together with Madagascar and the Comoros, remained in Jacquerie hands until early 1945.
France also annexed British Somaliland to French Somaliland, but by May 1945, it had been retaken along with North Africa.
February–March 1944 was the final phase of the war before the colonies of Axis countries came under attack from the Allies. The invasions of Spain and Italy and France's loss of North Africa, as well as the Marine nationale's defeat at the Bay of Biscay, allowed metropolitan France to be invaded.
The Jacqueries were never able to capture southern Nigeria and Accra, both of whom they were stopped at by Commonwealth troops. New Caledonia was the first in the house of cards called French State to fall to the enemy, doing so in April 1944.
