2024.05.31 21:09 POB_London B8/B9 RS4 Choice - Bucket List car (UK)

Recently we sold a loaded X5 40d with every toy, because I didn’t think we needed it after a Tesla Model Y was delivered as a company car (please don’t judge!)
We also have a BMW i3, which is a good laugh for school run and local journeys. We’ll keep it. Apart from that I drive a 25yo Honda, a 2009 VW transporter van and a ‘96 Toyota Hilux pickup. We have 2 kids under 10yo.
Before the SUV we had a few decent German diesel performance cars for the family (including a previous generation x5 40d, a couple of 330D tourings, a B8 A4 SLine Avant 3.0tdi, a TT tdi etc). My last A4 was a 2010. I also sold a 2019 JCW 210 edition mini (which was fun but not brilliant) to make way for the Tesla.
The company car lease ends soon and we don’t want another. It’s efficient blah blah but there’s no joy. I’m looking at EV options through the car scheme and none of them are appealing - big Volvos, another Tesla or loads of cash for a Taycan. I can save the monthly payment and buy something nice for the family to use as our “big car”. Ideally I want something that makes me smile and gets us from a to b on twisty roads, with the occasional pop and bang on the way.
RS4 is a bucket list car for me. I’ve been looking at £40k ish for a 2019 car with the right options and probably 50-60k miles. Obviously this is the v6 twin turbo. Part of me wants to cherish a burbling v8 monster though, even though it would be one of the last of the B8 series.
I’ve done this once before - when we moved from an E70 to an F15 x5, there was a huge jump in dynamics and efficiency - so much so that the old car felt clumsy and truck-like. It would be hard to go back. I feel like maybe going from a b9 into a b8 would be like that, although I know there are loads of b8 purists out there.
Talk me into a B8? Talk me into a B9? Tell me I’m making a huge mistake?
So, questions:
Looking for opinions and real world experiences, good and bad. I have done a search and watched a the YT reviews. Thanks a lot!

2024.05.31 16:23 Warm_Lemon_2472 Touring bike feels slower than hybrid bike...is that normal?

Fuji Touring disc and Scott Sub Cross 30.
First experience with these types of bikes, but I have owned many cross, road, and mtn bikes. Scott sub feels flat out faster and easier to accelerate than the touring bike. I was expecting they'd be about the opposite given the weight of the Scott. I'm almost thinking of using the Scott to tour.

I’m a young (sadly) fan. I’ve been a fan since I was 4 thanks to my parents, I never really thought about this until the documentary and as a singer it really shines out now. When did those of you that are “Day One” fans notice Jon’s voice change? from 89-92, 94-95, 2000s? Lost Highway/Circle era? THINFS era? 2022 tour? I guess I noticed through videos that he changed really around the 90s and then again more nasally (not in a bad way imo, I’m a country/rock singer) in the 2000s. As a young fan, my favorite era that I was alive for was 2010. Outside of Richie’s mistake of leaving, 2017. I wanna hear some other thoughts on this. Watching Let It Rock from 2010 on YouTube right now. Killer performance.

2024.05.31 06:25 dadbauld 2018 Odyssey Touring with 32k miles

It’s in pretty good condition overall. Couple of minor dents here and there, no major paint issues. Probably was a granny mobile or something. They are asking $32,000 for it (after I got them down from $33,000). In their defense, it does appear that they put about 3k into it for tires, fixing dents we had pointed out, and also fixing an oil pan leak.
7 years ago, we paid $8500 for our current 2010 Town and Country Touring with 89,000 miles. I just can’t get over how much costs have gone up. Is this vehicle really worth $32,000 when it is already 6 years old?? Located in Nebraska. Should we be looking at something else? Would love some advice here.
Thanks!

2024.05.30 07:01 No_Pomegranate7134 How many foreign tourists are ignorant of the rules / guidelines (even laws) or blatantly disregarding social etiquette & cultural customs in Italy that is deemed disrespectful by the locals?

I can only speak about Japan, it's getting bad in regards to over-tourism. For instance in Kyoto, there was a tourist acting like a some sort of 'wannabe' papparazzi bothering the Geisha walking around, she was reprimanded by another tourist saying that it's rude (rightly so) as the Geisha was just trying her best to not interfere as she's working. You can't do that, as Geisha are humans like everybody else, they don't like to be bothered by unruly tourists up close.
(Plus Japan has strict privacy laws about posting a photo portrait of someone's face up close without their permission on social media, as you can actually get sued for breaching their right to privacy.)
The thing is that Japan has unspoken rules (even for the slightest ones) including etiquette that may not cross over to Western culture, which is why Western tourists often fail to understand or completely disregard it, since they think "It's Asia, who gives a damn!" but that kind of mentality of them thinking it's okay to do stuff Japan deems inappropriate is just crazy.
(A traveler has to be culturally aware of where they are in the world regardless of the country they are currently in, there are mannerisms that are acceptable in their home country but frowned upon in foreign land.)
Apart from Westerners, tourists from both China and South Korea frequently travel to Japan, due to their geographical proximity to their home countries. However there are mannerisms from their own country that aren't tolerated in Japan. (i.e. spitting on the floor)
I swear, what attracts tourists is: video games, anime & pokemon! It's one of the biggest reasons why they end up bringing a empty suitcase to only fill it with nothing but snacks, games, QoL items from Japan.
It's disgusting when tourists in Kyoto (especially in Gion or the Geisha district) are acting like paparazzi whenever they spot a Geisha or Maiko, constantly invading their space approaching up so close, that is so rude! pretending as if they are celebrities or actresses, they ask the question on "can I take photo of you" with the attitude of "I want your autograph!" Its ridiculous!
[Japanese news segment talking about trash (or food scraps) left on the floor by tourists after visiting Gion and Kyoto despite bins present in the area!] with some of them eating while walking, which is frowned upon in Japan. As a manager from one of the stores showed photos from the last time tourists were present as 3 bins shown are full and clogged, thus giving tourists an incentive to litter leaving trash on the floor!
Even in other parts of the city, tourists leave empty bottles of soju including other beverages out in the street and pavement! Not being bothered to clean up after themselves.
There are even cases of tourists harassing them, pulling their hair, putting out cigarette butts on their kimonos or tearing their attire, it's bad! To the point the local government in Kyoto restricted (but didn't ban) tourist presence within private roadways.
They deter tourists from entering private roads where Geisha's hang out with a penality of ¥10000 (58,80 €) for trespassing, this applies to everyone - not just tourists. They should not be trespassing on private property, like at all!
Just recently, there are tourists caught trespassing on those private roads. (However the signage is working as a deterent for most, due to the fine imposed.) but like anywhere else there will be bad apples in the bunch who will of course, trespass on private property.
I mean, you can still go to Kyoto, but please... have some manners, that is what they are asking from visitors, as it's a living art museum that has been preserved for centuries to this day, which what makes Kyoto fascinating to visit in the first place.
Even though there are public streets, some of the surrounding ones are deemed private property (which tourists are unaware of.) I also hate the misinformation from "Western" media regarding a "Tourist Ban" - it's not true, you can still go there, but just comply with the rules.
A tourist was caught on video ringing a bell at Yasaka Shrine (which is used for ceremonial purposes) not for playing around, they actually barred off the rope attached to the bell since that happened. (Just because Japan is not a "Christian" country, doesn't mean you get to disrespect their culture and religion, it's gross!) Think of it as someone randomly ringing a bell at a Church in Rome randomly when it's intended to be used only during mass.
Not forgetting the issue that tourists occupy most of the available capacity in regards to public transport, the same ones locals use every day. That causes problems for local commuters, which is why there's a demand for specalized transport instead of tourists taking the regular one.
In most cases the train just passes by that station if there's insufficient space available. This also applies to restaurants too, as the queue is too long or results in longer waiting times for the locals in which they are the regular customer base, as tourists have invaded those too.
For example, in Japan: there was news coverage about tourists being careless on the roadway despite orange traffic cones and a barrier visible on the side of the road intended to dissuade them, tourists either halted incoming vehicles & traffic standing in the middle of the road (MEANT FOR CARS!) just to take a picture of Mt. Fuji. [It's stupid and dangerous if you ask me.] (I'm like: "Do they seriously want to be run over by a passing vehicle? It's a road designed for INCOMING traffic! Not a sidewalk!")
Some tourists STAND or SIT on the barrier, which is just like, why? Japan has a habit on indirectly solving any problem rather than confronting it head on, so they would rather install a fence to deter tourists rather than closing the road entirely to redirect incoming traffic, like instead of improving the infrastructre Kawaguchiko near Fuji, they just want to barricade the view. (There's even CCTV installed on a pole not far from the barrier that keeping the area under constant surveilance by cops.)
You're probably thinking "Why can't they just close the road and redirect the cars elsewhere? So the tourists can happy." It's because confrontation is frowned upon in Japan, in order to not tarnish their reputation, they instead come up with indirect and descrete approaches on providing solutions to the issue at hand i.e. such as over-tourism, it's nothing new. For example, they would put signage in Kyoto to deter or convince tourists rather than actually confronting them.
Due to Japan being a collectivist society where social harmony reigns, where you need an unanimous vote to rule in your favor without any objections from all parties in regards to decision making when talking about matters like this from a governmental or societal standpoint.
(As opposed to Europe & The West where Individualism is valued, Japan is more of "We have to do this as a team" mentality rather than "I want to do this for myself only" so that in itself is a cultural difference.)
There's more from that clip:
Tourists standing on the barrier with their own two feet, which again is not allowed. Even Japan's ministry of transportation put out a clear statement regarding implmenting countermeasures on a location you are not meant to tread on (or be jaywalking) so their solution is to "install a barrier" to deter them. But we know how that will end up, tourists still disregard the fact there's a barrier.
There's another spot where tourists now can take a picture of Fuji, it's some stairway of an overhead bridge, but people again cross the road (or jaywalk) just to reach it. Not long ago, a female tourist was run over by an incoming vehicle (due to her standing in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD) for the "instagrammable" picture of the mountain. [This happened in Kawaguchiko.]
Speaking of Kawaguchiko, the Lawsons there including Mt. Fuji are always featured on as the backdrop of every TikTok talking about tourism in Japan (alongside Kyoto) Yep, there were even 2 tourists caught jaywalking disregarding the ACTUAL pedestrian crossing. Some tourists are standing on the store's sign posts positioned nearby (that have running electricity and LEDs.) using that as a makeshift tripod for their iPhones!
In regards to Mt. Fuji, on TikTok there are so many "copy cat" itinerary submissions, even the thumbnails are basically the 'same' you can literally see the similarities [down below]. (hence why there are so many tourists flooding the area), like this:
Despite these posts coming from different users from all over the world, they are basically copying each other's itineraries. It's like this no matter how long I've scrolled through the site.
Since Japan started installing a black tarp obstructing the view of Mt. Fuji, tourists still poked holes through it. It's not opaque as you can partially see through it, or walk to the otherside where a Lawson stands, but some still jaywalk disregarding the actual pedestrian crossing even when there's a cop or security guard present.
From this video, a complaint filed by a dental clinic within the area, stating that tourists are leaving trash or left over food scraps near their premises, loitering on the steps approaching their clinic (only patients are allowed to enter) the clinic. Here, there are even complaints from the clinic mentioning about tourists parking their bikes on bike racks only designated for patients entering their clinic, along with trespassing on their premises. Even the dentist himself took photos regarding tourists loitering outside the clinic, patients are having a hard time getting inside because of this.
Not forgetting that they are trespassing on the rooftop, to the point the dentist (or the staff) resorted to calling the police multiple times due to this! Again, tourists were told to move out of the way or move their belongings to let incoming vehicles pass to park their cars at a Lawson. (Even the driver of a incoming truck had to honk at them! so they can move.)
Like what was happening in Kawaguchiko, the same is now happening in Fujiyoshida, at a pedestrian crossing, despite a security guard being present, people still disregarded rules about crossing the road, at around [3:00] from the video, the driver of an incoming vehicle had to honk at the tourist standing in the middle of the road so they can pass. (It's stupid.) Of course they were honked at by the driver (He's probably like: "What the hell is this idiot doing here standing in the middle of the road for cars!"), as you're not meant to loiter there halting traffic!

(Even the driver of a truck had to honk at them! so they can move.)
Just last year, Mt. Fuji itself was suffering from an over-tourism problem on its own since tourists are dying to climb to the summit, but some were ill equipped. (There was even a woman caught wearing shorts and sandals upon the trip to the summit - not suitable for climbing!) Some climbers show up shirtless or come ill-prepared along with creating a makeshift bonfire.
Public amenities (i.e. Toilets) are vandalized, damaged or destroyed due to over-tourism, now they are enforcing an entry fee of ¥2000 (11,75 €) to enter Mt. Fuji because of this! Tourists leave trash everywhere, crowds of them wanting to head to the summit in large gatherings, which causes problems leading to overcapacity.
Don't get me wrong, tourists do show up with proper gear (i.e. spiked shoes, ice axes, etc.) and attire heading for the summit, but there are bad apples who literally show up with shorts or singlet, which is not advised on a place like this since it's cold up there! You're climbing up a mountain after all. (Heading to the top is their main objective, with stop overs.)
There were a group of tourists caught shaking a sakura tree during cherry blossom season causing outrage, they're basically damaging the tree as the leaves were falling prematurely. The intended way the leaves are meant to fall is when they've matured, since the trees are considered part of public property, Japan deemed that as an act of vandalism and destruction of property.
Plus the trees are sacred to the Japanese (its even part of their cultural identity), as they believe it to represent a symbolism of life and death, those who tamper or mess with it are met with misfortune. Also, in the Daikoku Parking Area (in Yokohama) where it's a hangout for car enthusiasts, but the issue is that tourists trespass on the premises, such as climbing the fence.
December 2023: In Tokyo, tourists where holding up incoming traffic on a pedestrian crossing, despite cops being present, most of them want a selfie with the Tokyo Tower but holding up traffic with vehicles is just bad, as the security guards / police are telling people to just cross, to keep the flow, not stall incoming cars & traffic (in a busy city - mind you), but tourists were just loitering there (or walking on the road meant for cars) until they were scolded for jaywalking.
Earlier this year, there was an American livestreamer who was fined ¥200000 (1,174 €) for blasting his music way TOO LOUD, as it was disturbing the peace inside a restaurant somewhere in Osaka, it shows that Western streamers (who act like this) have ZERO respect for the customs upon their visit, ruining the reputation of foreigners in Japan, which is already causing some Japanese people to hate them.
There was a female tourist who literally by passed the fence / yellow line (like the one you stand behind upon waiting for a incoming train) went on the tracks just to take a selfie with her boyfriend! (Disregarding that she's at the station in Kyoto were other commuters are present, a train is going to show up eventually.) Stupid and dangerous, it's like as if she wants to be hit by an incoming train.
In hindsight:

  • Tourists in Kawaguchiko were partially obstructing the road (not moving out of the way!) to let an INCOMING TRUCK pass, so the driver had to swerve to the right to avoid running them over.
  • Tourists flooded another spot「夢の大橋("Most snova") for taking pictures of the mountain, walking up the stairway for the "instagrammable" picture.
  • [at around 4:41] They even caught tourists JAYWALKING in the middle of the roadway even though there's incoming traffic. (Despite the cones and barriers present.)
  • There's a group of tourists who were standing on the side of the road divider with incoming traffic loitering there. (Even a van drove right past them, as it's a ROAD - NOT A SIDEWALK!)
  • [at around 6:33-6:52] A tourist was standing behind a vehicle then approached the driver. (You can't halt vehicles in the middle of the road and distract the driver! - It's insane!)
  • [at around 6:69] Tourists posing in the middle of the lane divider for their "instagram" pics. (You are not allowed to loiter in the road divider!)
  • [at around 8:30] A mother and daughter who were tourists TRESPASSED on private property, as there was a sign displaying「立入禁止」("ZABRANJEN PRISTUP!") treading on the premises.
  • Of course, tourists litter and leave trash on the street, since Japan has no bins available at public places. (only at designated spots.)

2024.05.29 11:17 bikeagedelusionalite Planning a 3 week itinerary, some feedback would make me much less stressed!

Would love some feedback on this itinerary for a three week trip to Japan my GF and I are planning for September or October, not 100% sure yet. We've found it pretty stressful to commit to different things with the plethora of information and options, we love going down rabbit holes and as a result have had decision paralysis which isn't ideal lol.
We're both really active 40k steps a day kind of people and would have loved to be able to do the Mount Fuji hike, but looks like mountain accommodation is currently booked out (which is why we can now do sep or oct) so would love to hear any alternate suggestions of similar beauty. That's also why the Shimanami Kaido really appeals.
Big questions are:
Is Kanazawa worth it between Tokyo and Kyoto for one day?
What are the best day trips to take from Tokyo?
Which area is best to have an Onsen stay?
How many days in Tokyo? Seems like there's so much to do!

2024.05.29 05:27 _demerara Advice needed for Hakone trip/alternative

Advice needed on planned Hakone trip
Hi there
I am planning to go to Hakone on Sunday 2nd June for one night via romance car to Hakone, I am then planning the open air gallery and check in to my onsen hotel.
Next day I was planning on travelling down to the sightseeing tour boat then heading onwards to Kyoto..
There seems to be torrential rain forecast for Sunday/Monday so I am not sure if I should still go to Hakone or go somewhere else. I was thinking potentially Hikone as an alternative.
If I don't do Hakone I'm thinking of a day trip on Thursday 30th somewhere to see Fuji as it's clear
Thank you

2024.05.29 02:06 SOMETIME_THEWOLF_YT A Taylor journey and my attempt to revive a long dead creativity.

A Taylor journey and my attempt to revive a long dead creativity.
My little Taylor Journey and creative resurrection attempt.
Hi guys,
Before I waffle on endlessly, I’ve started a Taylor project aimed at helping me resurrect my long dead creative powers. Long explanation and plan below!
I grew up loving music and went to my first concert at the age of 8. At which point, my life was ruined by my parents as it was clear my path was music but I’d likely never make it.
Fast forward to the teens and I was writing songs every day with ease (good or bad). Then I had a band and we did well for a time until I made the terrible mistake of…getting a full time job. After 10 years of writing and performing, I finally stopped in 2010.
For a long time I felt I was a nothing man as music was my identity and it was no longer. Sad times but we move on.
2021, I met Olivia - my girlfriend/full time Swifty. Not really my bag. I’m more of a Bob Dylan, Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Nirvana, Electronica and Madonna kind of guy. So I paid no attention.
Then she put on the long pond studio thing and I listened. Not many songs caught my ear but Mirrorball definitely did. I spoke to Jonny, my old grizzled and grumpy bandmate about it, knowing he’d never listened to a mainstream artist in his miserable life. “I love Taylor!” he said. “I had a feeling about her anyway but when I watched the Disney thing, it forced me to completely re-evaluate her as an artist”. Ok I thought, is she really that special?
I have ADD and OCPD so naturally, my attention switched and I immediately forgot about everything and moved onto a shiny new obsession. But I took Mirrorball with me.
May 2023 Olivia and I very sadly break up and when I hear the likely toll of a breakup caused her to miss signing up for the UK tour dates, I decide to help make sure she gets to see Taylor, no matter where it is. We get her tickets to Stockholm. Not ideal, but good enough.
September 2023 - We are getting back together!
She sells her tickets at face value - as she wants to go with someone who loves Taylor and that’s not me and nobody else will pay to travel 😔.
October 2023 (I think). I am forced to endure a cinema trip to see the Eras film. Yikes. Thoughts on the night below…
Dear god, 3 hours. Hmmm cool opening. The film looks amazing! Why is the crowd sparkling? Cruel Summer is a perfect pop song. Wow those costume changes are seamless! Ok wow (Don’t blame me - Reputation) Isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t it isn’t. My tears Ricochet is so clever. She writes the melodies I could never. All too well is long and samey (I changed my mind on this since). Ok I’m going outside to make a quick playlist of the songs I loved so I can play them in the car to Olivia. Back in for the end. Loved Vigilante Shit. Love Midnights. The end.
April 2023 - Olivia wakes up the news that I’ve bought tickets to two Taylor shows (N1 and N3) in Paris - in two weeks time.
May 2023 - I decide if I’m going to watch six hours of this stuff, I need to make myself a playlist of the songs I like and it has to flow perfectly with Spotify premium lending a hand as crossfade used correctly = excitement. 10 songs maybe. Surely I can find ten I love. The finished playlist is in the picture above…
Ok so NOW I GET IT. Her songs are special and so is she. Now I’m excited.
The concerts were amazing. The view - perfect. The people all dressed up - so lovely to see. I wish I wasn’t too shy to dress up!
Post concerts - I’m home. I’m staring at my guitar collection. She’s making me want to create but I can’t. Everything is boring. But what if she can help me….
Ok so hear me out. I was good. That’s a certainty. I’m confident enough to say that. But, my lyrics were always way too cryptic to be relatable and I never wrote chorus’s. In fact I actively avoided them save for one of two occasions. So In the end, my songs felt stale and boring as I steered clear of hooks like an idiot.
So my master plan, is to learn and record every song on Folklore and actively note down and voice note record any melodic or lyrical ideas I have during the process. Then, write a song that fits into that folklore world that is clearly mine - and not a Taylor rip. But it has to be melodic and thematically - suitable for the folklore era.
I asked Jonny to spur me on by doubting me and he said “she writes what she feels and doesn’t disguise it. You can’t do that. If you do, it’s major progress. You also like to talk/sing and change it every time you do the song - she has definite melodies. Do that and you’ll be growing for the first time in decades.”
So, Im fighting off the ADD urge to drop the project half way through and I guess I just wanted to get it all down in writing so it’s a thing. Wish me luck!!
PS I’m sorry this was so long if anybody managed to reach the end :/

2024.05.28 18:01 ABrainArchitect Dear America, I'm Breaking Up With You..

It's not you.. it's me.

—or perhaps it's a bit of both.
Back in 2011, I arrived full of hopes, drawn by the glowing promise of the American Dream.
As I sit here at a Colombian coffee shop, I reflect on a decade of dreams, challenges, and revelations that have brought me to this moment of goodbye.
Our story began way before 2011, though. Do you remember?
It was back in 1993 when I first laid my eyes on you. The day my father brought our family to Poughkeepsie, NY, as an expatriate for a few years.
I didn’t speak your language, yet I found myself in your classroom within the second week.
Each morning, I watched my classmates start the day by singing your praises, their hands on their hearts. Although I couldn’t yet understand the words, I felt a connection.
As my vocabulary grew, I got to know your childhood. I learned how your own history was written by people who sought the comfort of your shores for a new beginning.
Those three years immersed in your culture left something in me—a desire that would drive me for the next 15 years.
The idea of hope, patriotism, and capitalism by merit. That anything was possible by working hard.
These things were not found in France, and I came back to see you in 2011 to pursue my dream with you.
I worked hard. I chased the dream. I followed the footsteps of immigrants that came before me, wanting to be successful.
We even got married in 2021—I was now an American Citizen.
I wanted to be successful, and I was.. but deep down, i was not happy.
I had been consumed by the very reason that brought me here.
I lost myself in the process. I forgot why you were initially such a good fit for me.
So I’ve decided to take some time off now, and I don’t know if I’ll return. Don’t worry, as long as we are still married, you are still collecting my taxes, no matter where I am in the world.
I want you to understand the realization I had, so maybe it could help your future relationships.
I was following a childhood narrative I had created years ago, and I was with you for the wrong reasons.
So as I leave, I hope to rewrite my story. A story that aligns more closely with who I am and what makes me happy.
Your’s truly,
B.

1. Unpacking Childhood Influences:

There are two key moments I remember vividly, both of which have profoundly shaped my drive and aspirations.

The Dodge Viper Commercial

It’s the early 2000s, and I’m lounging on the couch with my dad and brother, just chilling and watching TV.
Suddenly, this Dodge Viper commercial comes on.
I was hooked. I was mesmerized. I wanted that car.
Caught up in the moment, I shouted, “I’ll buy that car one day!”
..You should have seen their faces. They burst out laughing like I’d told the best joke of the year.
For them, the idea of me owning such a beast of a car was hilarious. They mocked me for even thinking that I would ever have a chance to own it one day.
First, it hurt. Then, it made me mad and lit a fire inside me.

First time getting fired.

Flash forward to 2010. I’m working at this fancy hotel in downtown Lyon, France. I know it’s not my dream job, but hey, I’m doing my best—minding my details, knowing I’ll patiently climb that ladder.
Then, out of nowhere, my manager Vladimir calls me into his office. He sits me down and hits me with this math pop quiz.
what’s 2+2/2”, he asked?
I shoot back “2,” quick as a flash. Wrong answer 😑.
You see, that’s why we can’t have you working here, Ben. The answer is 3. You’re fired.
And just like that, I was let go on the spot. I was too stunned to say anything.
Turns out, the guy admitted to another employee days later that he was just offloading his bad breakup mood on me—I was the newest hire, an easy target.
The feeling of injustice I felt at that moment was something I never experienced before.
That day, I said to myself: “I will get my revenge. It will take as long as it takes, but I will buy this hotel just so I can fire him back.
These two incidents dictated my future professional path without even knowing it. As I discovered many years later, they were not set backs; they were setups.
I would end up owning real estate. Although it was not this particular hotel, it was apartment buildings. And those fancy cars? Got them too, though not the Viper—sadly, they stopped making them in 2017.

We are driven by escape.

One of my favorite hobbies is to study history’s greatest entrepreneurs. By doing this consistently, you discover patterns:
They were usually running away from something. This is what drives us deep down.
Walt Disney, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, and even J.K. Rowling started their paths driven by the need to change their circumstances or to overcome hardships.
Initially, it's all about escape, about proving something, about getting out from under.
And, in many ways, my own journey mirrored this pattern.

2. My American Dream: A Decade in Fast Forward

In 2011, I arrived in LA, filled with ambition. I hustled through various gigs—from selling bus tour tickets to bartending—before venturing into real estate in Florida.
There, I discovered and pursued my passion for investing, eventually leading my own successful firm.
However, rapid growth brought its challenges—unhappy clients, overwhelming demands, and eventually, a personal and professional burnout.
Looking back on those crazy ten years, I see now that I was so focused on proving everyone wrong and winning at everything that I lost sight of what I really loved doing.
It was more about showing them I could do it, rather than following my own dreams.
This led to a moment of reassessment—was I truly pursuing what mattered to me?

3. The 14-Year-Old Boy at the Steering Wheel.

I needed a shift. I needed to travel, change my environment, and break my patterns of thinking. I needed perspective.
And so I did. Panama, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Huku Hiva, Colombia.
Fun fact, it was in Panama (the first trip) where the seed for my first newsletter was planted.
Anyway, back to the story. My realization:
All this time, I was chasing money. Money was my only motivation.
Why? Because I wanted to run away from not having any. I still wanted to prove to my brother and father on that I could make it enough to buy that damn car.
It was not me at the steering wheel of my company—it was my 14-year-old self.
It was not me acquiring these apartment buildings, it was the boy that for unfairly fired in 2010.
And you know what happens when you chase things for the wrong reasons?
You end up with results that you don't value.
The money I got? I spent it—on cars, houses, experiences, lifestyle.
Can you guess what happened as soon as I got them? I was unsatisfied. I immediately needed a bigger house, a better car, more extravagant and exciting experiences.
I finally sat down for a heart-to-heart with my 14-year-old self, realizing how those early fears and motivations had seeped into my adult life.
I needed to understand what I was running away from, and figure out what I wanted to truly run towards.

4. One gets you started, the other pushes you in the right direction.

Running from something is like sprinting from a tiger — you're filled with a rush of energy. Those childhood memories push you hard and fast.
But that kind of running doesn’t hold up forever. Eventually, you realize something's off. The initial spark fades, and you start asking, ‘What am I really chasing?’
That’s when you need to pivot and start running towards something — something that matters, something that sticks.
Finding your true passion, the thing you’re meant to do, that’s the journey worth pursuing.
For me, it all boils down to thinking, writing, sharing, and inspiring—helping others find their way off the rocky roads I once traveled.
If you’re curious about the questions that guided me through my own maze, I’ve compiled them into a cheat sheet for you.
“Easy for you to say, you are young”
Well. No. First, I am 37. And just to show you it’s never too late to change your path, and find your life’s work, just look at these examples:
Ray Kroc joined McDonald's when he was 52 and built it into the most successful fast-food corporation in the world. What did he do before that? He was a milkshake mixer salesman.
Colonel Harland Sanders started franchising his KFC concept at the age of 62, using his first Social Security check to fund the business.
The point is, it’s not too late.

6. This Feels Like a Stepback.. But Is It?

After a decade or two, if you find that you've been driven by the wrong motivations.. Realigning with your true passions often means taking a step back.
This could affect your finances, your social circle, or even your career path.
But as the late Steve Jobs said,“"It's impossible to connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards."
The past 10 years have taught me invaluable skills that are essential for this new journey:
When you think about it, it’s not really a step backwards. I see it more as a step sideways.
A realignment to a different path that might just take you where you want to be much quicker.

Final Thoughts

Am I really breaking up with America? Not really.
I am breaking up with the ideas that brought me there.
I am distancing myself from an identity that was shaped more by my past and less by my true aspirations.
If you've ever felt like you're on a path set by someone else—whether by society, your past self, or the expectations of others—I encourage you to pause and reflect.
Know that it's never too late to change direction. Your past experiences haven't trapped you; they've prepared you.
Every skill you've developed and every lesson you've learned can help pave a new, more authentic path forward.

Karma, Snakes, and Reputation
While I had thought the next post I worked on would be the start of my Speak Now deep dive(s), this idea popped up unannounced and I had to write about it.
Overall post theory: Snakes were supposed to be part of the aesthetic for the missing album Karma until it got co-opted by Kimye which lead to Taylor getting “cancelled”. (I put cancelled in quotes because Taylor's career has recovered from snakegate, not because I am dismissing what Taylor felt about what happened, or her trauma ).
Facts/assumptions I worked from when I wrote this that I feel confident about
  • Taylor is known to give hints to her next era while she is in her current one. For example, she cut her hair while still on tour for Red, and that new look was part of her style for 1989.
  • Karma was an album planned to release in the fall of 2016 (this followed Taylor’s pattern of releasing a new album every two years).
  • Karma was going to be a coming out album - 1989 was a soft launch for that
  • Taylor has created narratives with past relationships that play out in public and then connect back to an album or song. For example, Taylor and Jake G. being seen out for brunch in October 2010, the pap pictures of that day include Taylor with a coffee in her hand. Taylor then hid “Maple Latte” in the liner notes for the OG ATW, which made people think of those pictures
  • Big Machine/Scott B did not want Taylor to come out. I think that is true throughout their time together, but especially because Karma would have been TS6, which was the last album she was contracted to BM for. As we know now, SB sold BM after reputation was released (actual TS6). He wanted to make money when he sold BM (the crown jewel being Taylor’s masters), so if he/the industry thought that Taylor coming out would decrease the value of BM’s biggest asset, he would be motivated to stop her
  • The Kimye/Taylor feud was manufactured as Taylor claims, and I believe it was manufactured to stop Karma/Taylor from coming out.
  • There is no shortage of men in history that will do everything in their power to stop a woman from having power and will do anything they can to control women. Never mind if that woman was planning to disrupt a powerful and corrupt industry like the music industry.
Stretch assumptions that make sense to me but are not as evidence based
  • New Romantics (the last track on 1989’s deluxe edition), was a signifier that not only was Taylor going to come out on her next album, but she was also going to do it as part of a larger movement to shake up the music industry, by having others come out with her
  • Some version of Karma has been in the works since Speak Now when Taylor decided to stay in the closet. She made that decision, but wasn’t happy about it. In fact, I think it is a decision she has regretted since she made it. Even with the assumption that Karma could have started with SN, I still put the timeline for its release after 1989 (TS5) to align with the last album she was contracted to make with Big Machine
Taylor + snakes before 2016
Taylor was born in (1989! Sorry I can’t not do that after Eras lol) the year of the snake so she already had a reason to feel connected to snakes/snake imagery.
Here is what I found when I looked up snake symbolism.
https://preview.redd.it/sey6ve09j63d1.png?width=1378&format=png&auto=webp&s=12b90cfe161677f4028d0cbef4d82d120bb61e91

If Karma was going to be a coming out album/an album that disrupted the music industry, then using snake imagery to signal a rebirth could easily have connected with Taylor.
Snakes appear twice in 1989 visuals. There could be more, I only found two with my research.
From the Shake it off mv
What exactly are you looking at, Taylor? 👀
The jacket she’s wearing has an animal print on it which was part of her Bleachella look.
In the Blank Space music video, she is seen wearing a snake ring. I’m including a pic and gif below.
https://preview.redd.it/k88yfzclj63d1.jpg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=480cac5378b9c534f10b548ed634239b89a826a6
https://i.redd.it/hl1m6ehmj63d1.gif
I’ve seen comments that say that she’s wearing a snake ring and a butterfly ring here, but I can’t see the butterfly ring clearly so I don’t want to claim that as fact.
Bleachella
Taylor launched a new look - AKA Bleachella - in April of 2016. It was a stark contract to any of her previous looks and many people then (and now) believe it was a hard launch for what was coming with TS6.
There are a lot of pics from that era that are worth looking at. Especially her use of animal prints in her clothing.
I want to call specific attention to the night of the Met Gala in 2016. Taylor was one of the honourary co-chairs that night. Fun fact: one of her cohosts that night was Idris Elba 👀. Another fun fact about this Met Gala: it was the first one where the red carpet was televised.
Here is Taylor’s outfit for the night.
Her ssssssilver ssssssnake outfit looks sssssspectacular
This is also the same Met Gala where she first famously met her future perfect angel boyfriend Joe.
He's gorrrrrrgeous
The night she had a “dance off” with Tom Hiddleston even though she was still officially dating Calvin Harris.
This might be my favourite Taylor related headline
And the night this picture was taken with Karlie.

As a newer fan of TayloGaylor, I was under the impression that Taylor was called a snake in 2016 only because of Kim K’s tweet.
Kim also released the doctored video of the TayloKanye phone conversation to snapchat in July 2016.
But, that’s not the case. It started earlier with Calvin Harris.
Calvin was one of Taylor’s most chaotic boyfriends beards.
They officially split in June 2016 (a month after she was at the Met Gala). After they broke up, and much to Calvin’s chagrin, Taylor confirmed that she helped write the song This is What You Came for under the pseudonym “Nils Sjoberg." Calvin wrote a bunch of tweets about it (not the famous “shaving my beard” tweet thread btw). He later deleted the tweets.
Side note: I do wonder if the tweet where he capitalizes ME is one of the reasons for the song lol
https://preview.redd.it/5ro5krvhk63d1.png?width=1318&format=png&auto=webp&s=d944856d76e7e5c6fe4851f563cd855687aeb8da
Fans of Calvin, then went on social media and flooded Taylor’s social media with snake emojis.
Taylor seemingly didn’t know what was coming with Kanye, and I’m wondering if she wanted to manufacture a canceling via Calvin that would help explain/launch the very different vibes that were coming with Karma.
This is pure speculation, but I don’t think it is that wild for someone who likes to control the narrative - and we’ve seen plenty of examples of this when it comes with Taylor - to want a story created before her next album that tied things tougher nicely. But then, the plot got away from her. I don’t think Taylor anticipated how primed the general public was to “turn” on her.
Kanye released Famous in February 2016. Kim’s tweet calling Taylor a snake happened very soon after the Calvin incident. I’m guessing they saw an opportunity with some backlash already happening against Taylor and ran with it.
Or, perhaps Scooter knew details about Karma and used that information to stop what Taylor had panned. Maybe he was already in contact with Scott B. to buy BM so he also had a vested interest in keeping Taylor closeted. If Scott B knew about Karma, he could pass along relevant information to Scooter.
Regardless of the how and why, the planned worked.
Taylor didn’t come out, and neither did Karma.
Some other snake things that I think support this theory
I don’t know if you remember this, because I had forgotten about it until I was working on this post. But when 1989 TV was released, a big deal was made out of one of the ’S’s in Taylor’s Version looking like a snake. The consensus was that she was hinting rep TV was next, but what if she was confirming something else? What if it was a nod to snakes being tied to 1989 because Karma was supposed to come next.
Interessssssting
This comment by u/Macandcheese359 shows there is a snake on Taylor’s thigh in the LWYMMD music video when she is dressed in orange, in a cage, singing about Karma.
In the Karma mv, the image we get right after we see Taylor dressed as Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retribution/revenge, shows Taylor in what looks like hell. This is presented as the two being mirror images of each other or images flipped on their heads.
Everyone thought the Nemesis image was connected to 1989 because of the date on the base of the goddesses statue and that this was a clue that reputation TV is coming after 1989 TV. But what if it is also showing that the symbolism for reputation was a reflection of the original Karma symbolism.
Karma was supposed to be about rebirth/reinvention (coming out), but that was stopped. Taylor not one to just take defeat, decided with reputation that she wanted to take some control of the narrative back. What better way to do that that then using a lot of the same/similar imagery from her Karma and then turning it into a revenge album.
It would have looked the same/similar to Karma but wasn’t.
A bonus fun fact that is probably a reach but very fun
This post by u/vegancake points out that the TTPD logo upside down might spell out cáil. Which is Celtic for reputation. So perhaps it is a hint Taylor will announce reputation tv when she’s in Dublin.
I found this via Google translate
Yet another fun fact: Karma in Irish is Karma
In the spirt of being a big 🤡 I’m taking this to mean that reputation could also be a “clue” about Karma. Especially if some of the same visuals/motifs that were used in reputation were meant for Karma.
Reputation was released on November 10th. The mirror image to that date is October 11th.
AKA National Coming out Day.
AKA the day there has been a lot of recent theorizing when reputation TV might be released. This would be amazing for so many reasons. As we know, Taylor hasn’t stopped signalling ✌🏻, so perhaps that is the day the reputation TV and Karma are finally coming out.
✌🏻gether

2024.05.28 17:07 ABrainArchitect Dear America, I'm Breaking Up With You

Panama, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Nuku Hiva, Colombia.
Fun fact, it was in Panama (the first trip) where the seed for my first newsletter, The Illusion of Being Stuck, was planted.
