2024.05.17 09:37 lyssam229 Is this a good email to send to the DA and police department about the way I feel concerning the treatment of my SA case 6 years ago?

***** I am mainly sending this because I want my evidence back and because I’m pissed that the police department allowed this to happen with next to 0 consequences. Names and identifying info redacted. Let me know if I should change anything, I genuinely am thinking about sending this to whoever I can find emails for at my local PD.
To Whomever This May Concern,
My name is *. I am 21 years old and am a recent graduate of the University *. I have made the difficult decision to write this letter because I am truly disgusted and horrified by the manner in which ** County, the ***** Police Department, and the Child Advocacy Center of *****, NY handled my allegations of rape, sexual assault, and stalking that were filed in 2019. I have allowed myself to move on and grow from this atrocious act that has significantly impacted my life, but my development as a functional, healthy adult has been drastically hindered due to the treatment and negligent investigation into this case.
I would like to describe my story in order to fully convey my frustrations. When I was fifteen years old in late July of 2018, just after my freshman year of high school, I began babysitting the child of a thirty-six-year-old man who my family and I knew quite well and had considered a family friend since I can remember. The premise of the childcare was to assist this man with daily tasks regarding his three-year-old daughter. The man in question was unemployed, but had a difficult time caring for his autistic child alone due to his anger issues, as recognized by the Department of Social Services.
When I began working for this family, the man in question, ****** (*) was in the home at all times in which I was present in the home. The events that led up to the detrimental and life-changing abuse that I experienced are too difficult to describe in one email. To summarize, this man groomed me, sexually assaulted me, and raped me on several occasions in his home over the course of six months. ** sexually abused me in his home, at my home, and in a vehicle. He bragged to his close friends, and specifically, his neighbor ***** and friend ****** about the things he had done to me. These witnesses were willing to comply with any investigation at the time of these events, but were not ever asked to answer questions. In addition, this man isolated me from family and friends, threatened to murder my entire family, and stalked me for a year after I ceased contact with him, which included 5+ drives by my home daily, waiting outside of my place of employment, and cyberstalking. This man used hard drugs in front of me and forced me to participate in and witness several illegal acts. I cannot convey with strong enough language, the impact that these events had on me as a naïve and innocent teenager. He genuinely ruined my life and I deal with the effects every single day.
These events have seriously impacted my development into an adult, and hindered my growth on levels that the recipient of this email may not comprehend. During the end of my relationship with this individual, I had realized that this situation was extremely unsafe and had attempted to break contact. He threatened suicide as a punishment if I left him, so I agreed to meet with him at ******** high school in the mornings after I had gotten off the bus, as I was not yet old enough to drive myself. He forced me to remain in his vehicle from 8am until 9:30am during school hours for multiple days in a row. Several times during these meetings, in the parking lot of the school, he sexually abused me and at other times, drove at dangerous speeds with me in the vehicle on Route 8 in *******. School officials and police officers were well aware of these events after my whereabouts during several of these mornings had been discovered. This individual was then arrested on charges of endangering the welfare of a child but was released on bond the very next day. After much difficulty and explaining, I was granted with a temporary restraining order, which did not stop his advances. To this day, when I return to my hometown to visit family, I am afraid for my safety as I have to see this man in public at a gas station or at a local restaurant.
After a few months, in 2019, I had realized that I wanted to tell my story and that I wanted this man to be held accountable for what he had put me through. At just 16 years old, I went through a series of interviews held at the Child Advocacy Center in ***, NY, which only further traumatized me. A female officer involved with my case made me feel as if I had brought this onto myself due to the sympathy I felt for my abuser and the guilt that I felt about everything that had occurred. To clarify, I was a victim of abuse as a child and did not fully comprehend the extent of said abuse. The female officer was unwilling to recognize that I was a vulnerable, disadvantaged child who did not have the means to advocate for myself. Another male officer, Detective **** collected evidence from me, including an expensive necklace given to me by my abuser with, to my knowledge, a value of $3,000, as well as a letter from him where he confessed his love and relationship with me. He looked me in the eye and promised that I would receive justice. This officer never contacted me again after the interview. If nothing is going to be done about this rage-filled, aggressive, and dangerous pedophile, I would like the necklace and letter back that was entered into evidence in 2019.
I will never understand how a person can be subjected to such atrocious and vile acts, and nothing will be done about it. I am not a religious person, but I wake up every single morning praying that he has not found another victim to control and destroy. I pray for his family, especially his child, and I pray for those who have to encounter him. I pray for myself and my family, as my case has been dismissed and invalidated time and time again by the ***** police department. I pray that no other girl or woman has to experience the things I did, nor has to grow up so quickly the way I did. The treatment of this case taught me that I cannot rely on law enforcement, or on those who are supposed to protect me. I hope that my statements throughout this email encourages more thorough investigations into cases like mine. Women and girls need to be protected fiercely, strongly, and wholeheartedly. I was not provided with further resources to assist with my mental health during this time. The town I have grown up in and have always loved is forever tainted as the place where my life was ruined.
Today, as a strong, accomplished, and college-educated woman, I am extremely disappointed with the way my trauma and physical safety was dismissed by the ***** police department, ***** County as a whole, and the Child Advocacy Center of ******, NY. I will no longer be silenced by fear. I will say his name, as the guilt and shame I have experienced is not mine to bear. I am not looking for retribution, I am simply asking that you dedicate resources to believing victimized women and offering bare minimum, necessary support to women like me in the future.
Thank you for your time,

2024.05.17 09:35 y6bu8 Fellow Daoists! Take my Dao technique "A reader's endless scripture treasure trove"

You are stuck in my domain, fellow daoists, and the only way to get out alive is to provide me with 3 heavenly scriptures that you know of. However, Pindao does not like to bully the weak, so I shall share some of my scriptures as well.
The villain is not ruthless, and the character is unstable / 玄幻:反派不狠,人设不稳 - This scripture contains the essence of the villain dao. The main character is evil, very smart, cunning and has no moral bottomline. He always makes various plans and arrangements for his goals and knows when to advance and when to retreat. He does not completely trust or believe anyone so no one can truly enter his heart, but he knows how to act and use people to his advantage, especially his father and mother. The novel's cultivation system is not anything new, it's similar to most of the three thousand realms; however, the characters make the cultivation system shine as you can feel the uniqueness of their dao. Oh, the main character has a system as well, and it encourages him to kill the son of luck. However, different from scriptures of similar genre, these sons of luck are not stupid, especially after the second one is killed. The MC does not have a true lover from beginning to end, but he does have some experience in romance due to the process of enhancing his own Dao.

Become a full-time hunter and become the Supreme Will / 从全职猎人开始成为无上意志 - This scripture is anime based, fellow daoists, and it also involves world travel. The main character has a system, but the system is an auxiliary type as its usage is calculating perfect training plans and development paths for the MC. It uses the MC's current knowledge base to formulate those plans into something practical, so there is no instant godly technique or powerup; it is a steady process of growth. The MC is cold, calculating, and ruthless; he always moves forward to reach the peak and acts without regret for his actions. The first world is Hunter x Hunter, as based on the title, but the other worlds are up to fellow daoists interested in this scripture.
Status: Ongoing
Wordcount: 1,559,900 words
Chapters (as of making this post): 534
Poison Check: None - Sometimes (depends on what you think about the MC's actions and decisions on some parts)
Personal Rating: 9.5/10
Survival game: My plug-ins can be superimposed / 求生游戏:我的外挂能叠加 - This scripture may sound stupid because of the title, but I assure you, fellow daoists, it is good. The world setting is about a train that travels around time and space in another dimension, and passengers of the train are given abilities. They have to perform train tasks, participate in games, and survive. The MC is a lunatic with a tendency to kill if there is physical contact, but he can suppress this urge as he has strong self-control. Other characteristics of the MC are that he is smart, calm, cold (somewhat emotionless), ruthless, and that he has no moral bottom line. The MC is somewhat invincible after a certain point, but he still faces challenges due to different games and rules.

Poison Check: None
Personal Rating: 9.8/10
The Road to Martial Arts BOSS / 武侠BOSS之路 - This scripture is very good, fellow daoists; it is full of schemes and calculations. The main character has a system that gives the MC a choice between the righteous camp or the villain camp, and the MC chose the villain camp, no surprise at all. The system this time is about giving the MC martial arts knowledge, skills, and memories of a character from the villain camp of various Chinese novels and series, e.g., Xiong Ba or Dongfang Bubai, if the MC kills them in a simulated fight. The MC is calculating, ruthless, and pretty much an in-and-out villain with a big brain. The world's power system is mainly about high martial arts with a lot of focus on the Dao and is a dog-eat-dog world.
Status: Finished
Wordcount: 2,660,000 words
Chapters: 1,256
Poison Check: None
Personal Rating: 9.8/10
PS: I intend to add more scriptures later.

2024.05.17 09:34 Yurii_S_Kh "Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5: 30-47; 6: 1-2)

https://preview.redd.it/y2w2pg9hvx0d1.png?width=1018&format=png&auto=webp&s=bb04451b139ba68ecc01c76838c045b85fdf96f8
Christ is risen, dear brothers and sisters! Today, the Gospel of John is read during the Divine Service (John 5: 30-47; 6: 1-2).
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
31If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.
32There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.
34But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
35He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
36But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
39 Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
41 I receive not honor from men.
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
44 How can ye believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that cometh from God only?
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
1 After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tibe´ri-as.
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
As the Lord continued His speech to the Jews, He rebuked their unbelief with the utmost determination. Not needing glory from them, He grieved for them, because, not believing in Him as the Messiah, they showed their lack of love for God the Father who sent Him. Referring to John the Baptist, whom the Jews greatly respected, the Savior says: I have a greater testimony than John: for the works which the Father gave Me to do, these very works which I do, testify of Me that the Father sent Me (John 5, 36).
Alexander Lopukhin writes: “The Jews not only did not believe the testimony of John, the prophet of God, about Christ, but now they do not believe Christ Himself, who has for Himself a testimony incomparably stronger than that of John. The latter, as is well known, did not perform a single miracle, but Christ, by the power of His Father, performs various miracles, and by this testifies that He is indeed sent by the Father.
In the Holy Scriptures, through the prophets, God pointed to His Son as the Messiah, but the Jews do not heed this scripture, because the word of God has not taken root in their hearts. They do not hear the voice of God in His Scriptures, and therefore Christ adds: Search the Scriptures, for you think ye have eternal life through them; but they testify of Me (John 5:39).
Archbishop Averky (Taushev) explains: “The reason for the unbelief of the Jews is that they seek human glory, and for them it is not pleasant who denounces them, even if he has the right to do so, but is pleasant who glorifies them even without any right to do so.
Depriving the Jews of the last foundations on which they had built their hopes, the Savior remarks: Think not that I will accuse you before the Father: Moses is your accuser, in whom you trust (John 5:45).
And here is meant both the direct prophecies and promises about Christ in the books of Moses, and the whole law, which was a shadow of the benefits to come in the kingdom of Christ.
From the lines of today's Gospel reading, dear brothers and sisters, we can see how important it is to love and trust God. No evidence of God's presence will change our lives and our relationship with God unless our hearts are filled with humility and faith. Only then will the light of God shine in our hearts, spreading throughout our lives!
Help us in this, risen Lord!

2024.05.17 09:27 Specialist_Cell2174 Some thoughts on life and academia.

I keep thinking about my experience in academia (Ph.D. and postdoc), an unsuccessful attempt to escape and how I dug my grave with my own hands.
I keep reading about recent developments in US biotech industry and its has been absolutely disheartening. The job market right now is awful and it has not bottomed out.
I cannot help, but thinking how did I arrive at this point and what could I have done to save myself???
I am speaking here about my experience in life sciences. I hope that the situation is better in other areas, but life sciences are absolutely over-saturated, over-flowing and under-paid area of STEM, probably along with chemistry.
Long time ago, after 1 year into the Ph.D. program, I got a weird feeling. I quietly approached people in the lab, with whom I was on friendly terms and they confirmed my worst expectations. Essentially, the unspoken (and un-communicated!!!) assumption was that after a year or so a Ph.D. student should show to the PI outstanding results, worthy of publication in "Nature", "Science" etc. Obviously, with no help, no guidance, no support. The PI did not want to tarnish his academic CV with publications in low- or medium-impact journals! So, if you could not show a potential for a publication in "Nature" (or similar journal), the PI would simply lose interest in you and "dis-own" you. This meant no support of any kind, no interest in your defense and no recommendation letter. Nothing! I saw this done to several people in our group. The PI tried (in some cases very successfully) to sabotage careers of his subordinates.
Remainder of my Ph.D. was absolute mental torture. I knew that without support of the PI I had not a single chance for academic career. Basically, academic career was dead for me. Every day I experienced a mental torture of senseless work. I knew that it was absolutely pointless to continue my Ph.D. The project was going nowhere. The PI lost all interest. By then I knew very well, how competitive and cutthroat was academia. I could have just sat in my office, collected stipend for another year or more and walked away. There was no point of doing anything. It was like digging a hole in the ground and then filling it back with same soil. Again and again and again! Every day! Coming to the lab, doing senseless work, knowing that it was all meaningless and continue doing it over and over -- just to have something to put in the thesis. This experience crippled me to the point that now I absolutely cannot stand any meaningless work.
I defended my Ph.D. and somehow got a postdoc in a shitty lab. 3 years of my postdoctoral experience could be described by one word: abuse! Constant lies, gaslighting, micromanagement, disrespect, threats, being underpaid, being overworked. I clearly remember that I cried because I did not have a courage to commit suicide.
I tried to seek on-line, on various forums advice on how to get out of this situation. To put it short, I was "trolled" and bullied by academics to the point of mental meltdown.
Recently I tried to find a career coach / mentor. Needless to say, my search was unsuccessful. There is no help out there! Sure, there are people that gladly will take your money in return to sugarcoated fluff. But that's it!
I have been thinking a lot about career coaching / career guidance. You know what? Absence of good advice / a lot of bad advice was, probably, a final "death blow" to my aspirations.
First of all, I did not understand how hiring works and no one explained it to me. It is not that there is a great mystery about hiring, it is that no one ever explained it to me. Secondly, I falsely believed that I could capitalize on Ph.D. itself and a set of so called "transferable skills". Lie! No one hires based on transferrable skills! Transferable skills == soft skills. If you have only transferable skills = soft skills, you can get a job of an admin assistant. Because you need good communication skills and critical thinking when scheduling meetings and taking minutes. But! If you have transferable skills and a Ph.D., you will NOT get a job of admin assistant, because you are "over-qualified".
I always knew that my Ph.D. in molecular biology was completely worthless! Yes, I had to learn every single method and protocol myself, without any help! Yes, I worked 60 hr and 80 hr weeks. But you cannot put this on resume and hope that HR will value it. Even today, years after I completed my Ph.D., I can explain every single methods and every single experiment that I did. Because I did everything on my own, without any help!!! I should be proud of myself, but I actually hate myself -- because I cannot sell it. Because market values "rock-stars", because market values what's trendy and what's in demand!
I was led astray by all this trash advice about "customizing your resume" and "highlighting transferrable skills". I have missed an opportunity of a lifetime!!! 5 or 6 years ago people, who attended coding bootcamps, could actually get a job as a programmer!!! Yes, not too long ago employers were actually scooping people, who completed coding bootcamps!!! That would have been my chance of getting the hell out of academia. I had a gut feeling that my Ph.D. was a complete waste of time, I suspected that I need to write-off Ph.D. as a loss and re-educate myself completely to have a chance! And I have missed an opportunity of a lifetime to learn how to code, to get into bootcamp, to get an entry-level coding job and move on from there. Now there are ongoing layoffs in tech and job market is flooded with junior coders. The gates are closed.
Instead, I wasted my time tinkering / customizing my resume and thinking how to sell "transferrable skills". Wrong, wrong, wrong! I do not think that anything like it will ever come again. When you can teach yourself, when you can get through the bootcamp and get into a field with good pay and career growth!!!
To all people out there: I cannot stress enough, watch out for bad advice!!! Look for a good advice -- its worth it's weight in gold!

2024.05.17 08:46 zapisv1 Using Nen to increase Nen Proficiency: A theory about Ging’s Abilities

With new chapters on the horizon, I thought I’d take a shot at explaining my current guess at Ging’s nen prowess. I am not going to go super in depth with evidence other than Ging’s general character archetype and maybe some other theories (Gon was made via Greed Island).
Ging’s ability is profoundly simple. Like his son, Ging is an enhancer and his ability is a feedback loop. He enhances his nen ability through nen. Not increasing his aura, just his ability to learn. Perhaps by enhancing thought or processing, or even simpler. His ability to learn with speed would help him reach Top 5 nen users at such a young age, and his deep fundamental knowledge of nen has basically been the extent of his presence (faces on fingers, adapting Leorio’s ability, commentary on Gon’a nen-less situation). I think Ging might be attempting to exploit the nature of nen, as seen in the theory of creating Gon through Greed Island cards. He’s lazy but ambitious, in the way of a problem solver that finds simple to get to a solution, rather than constructing an elaborate and grandiose solution. He’s more than capable of getting a 3 Star license but not really bothered by something that would require a lot of time working on and refining. This would lead me to believe that his ability is not an active ability, but a passive skill that allows him to take in and process information at very high levels.
This would fit in line with what he has already said, specifying that his ability is not to directly copy skills with his ability, something like Chrollo’s book. Exceedingly simple, but I can’t think of a caveat to fit into the contractual/sacrificial nature of Nen that would make his Hatsu make sense. Perhaps it’s so simple and effective that there is no major caveat. It contrasts well with the increasingly complicated nen beasts of the princes. It would also aid in baffling people like Pariston, who might overthink and expect a very specific ability. I also like this concept of an anti-specialist, a universalist, which would fall on the opposite end of the nen affinity chart (where Enhancer is). I also think it fits Togashi’s general writing style of trying to subvert expectations, and what he has done recently with expanding the nen affinity chart to having characters that have mixed affinities. Perhaps his “ability” falls less in line with a hatsu and more along the lines of an enhancement of skill itself, like how you can apply XP in a video game to a trait/upgrade that increases XP gain. Something like Komugi’s ability to just improve her gungi skills, simple yet effective.
TL/DR: Ging is good at nen because his nen ability is to improve his nen abilities

2024.05.17 08:38 ravedeath1917 Kommunistisches Programm – National Revolution and Downfall of Cambodia (1980)

https://libriincogniti.wordpress.com/2021/02/25/kommunistisches-programm-national-revolution-and-downfall-of-cambodia/
The Events after the Fall of Phnom Penh and the Programme of Khieu Samphan, the Peasantry and the Enablers of Capital
With the end of the Indochina war in 1975, not much remained of Cambodia’s economy either. More than half of the rice fields lay fallow, and the few industrial enterprises, the port facilities in Kampong Som, the railway lines and the bridges had been destroyed by US bombs. Although the figures are not unambiguous, their magnitude alone shows what heavy blood sacrifice imperialism also demanded of this people: In the five years of war, around 800,000 people were killed, more than 40,000 were maimed, almost 200,000 were wounded.
The constant flow of refugees inflated the capital from its original population of around 600,000 to over 3 million, meaning that by the end of the war almost half of the Khmer people were crammed into their metropolis. As is well known, the imperialist world press howled in horror and disgust when it learned of the forced exodus of this human aggregation. The US bombardment drove people from the countryside into the cities – the revolutionary nationalists had to force them back. Both actions were cruel and devastating for those affected, because both times they happened under terrible conditions, the first time under the imperialist hail of bombs and the coercion of its local police, the second time under the pressure of hunger and the state coercion of the newly installed revolutionary patriotic power. But for the imperialist propaganda machine there were no connections here. Of course, it only saw the terror of the Khmer Rouge, so supposedly of Communism. Here again was a wonderful opportunity to play out the bourgeois farce of humanism and love of one’s neighbour to the full. No mention of the mass murders in the imperialist war against the Southeast Asian peoples, no mention of the unspeakable destruction of these only weakly industrialised agrarian societies. These sacrifices were noticed at most when the insane war spending of the USA threatened to drag the entire imperialist West into the vortex of economic problems as a result of the currency crises caused by it. After all, to this day, these gentlemen are consistently proud of their efforts to preserve “freedom”.
Cambodia became the main object of these friends of mankind over the next few years. Here, indeed, all cherished values and conceptions were thrown overboard. A state without money, without postal services, without cars and motorbikes, without public transport, without telephones, television, books and the cities extinct. Only “communists” could have committed this crime; as is well known, they can be trusted with anything inhumane and in Cambodia they truly acted as the incarnation of “darkness” and “evil”. What was perpetrated before in the name of the heroes of “light” and “reason” – not a word about that, of course. It was a central organ of the imperialist offensive on the human intellect – Reader’s Digest – that first announced in 1977 that at least 1.2 million people had been murdered in the two years since the fall of Phnom Penh. Ever new figures were quickly added, which journalists claimed to have learned from the numerous refugees. It is not necessary to assume that all these reports were forgeries, because in fact the Khmer Rouge set an extremely radical course from the beginning, which certainly brought much horror, misery and also deaths. But today’s sated imperialists should perhaps sometimes look at the history books: What misery, what terror, what torment against the population is archived there – and that over centuries. The French Revolution also produced at least 100,000 deaths in the most important four years – and it did so with a machine specially designed for the purpose. It was not by chance that it was the steam engine and the guillotine that inaugurated the industrial age in a revolutionary way. But do the distinguished British gentlemen, who even then scoffed at these butchers in Paris, have fewer lives on their consciences? Those who still don’t know have to have it written on their cheat sheets all the time: The establishment of bourgeois rule has always been brutal and extremely bloody. The destruction of the traditional smallholder form of economy, the annihilation of small-scale trade and crafts always passed over those affected like a merciless steamroller. And under unspeakable tortures, the majority of these people who were expropriated without compensation were pressed into the factories and, if necessary, forced by brutal violence to slave as many hours of their day as possible for the lowest possible wages. All that was not so long ago. But it is always amusing how hastily today’s representatives of capital pretend that these are youthful sins of foreign predecessors. And this process of constant dressing for factory labour, of the destruction of both man and nature, continues both in depth and in breadth. It will only come to an end when this capitalist basis has been revolutionarily annihilated because of the contradictions it constantly produces.
...
However, if one wants to understand the “mysterious” processes in Cambodia, one has to be clear above all about the material and social conditions. A devastated country that was still largely worked by small peasants; a chaotically bloated capital city to which the majority of these same peasants had fled. The terror of the bombs had charged this population, once peaceful and living in the eternal grind of farm labour, with fear, but above all with unbridled rage and blind hatred. Hatred against the city in which they had to take refuge, anger against the American bombers which destroyed their existence, but particularly anger against their own corrupt aristocracy, the military as well as the city dwellers in general who sought to prolong their raison d’être by making a pact with imperialism. Now the old mixture of foreignness, subservient spirit and unease found its general discharge in a primal hatred of the rural population for their oppressors in the cities. A frenzy of revenge arose, which certainly accounted for most of the brutalities in the first year of liberation.
In order to understand this social side of this revolution in Cambodia, which gave it the ferocious expression of blood, revenge and chaos that one encounters in practically every revolution carried out mainly by peasants, one must always bear in mind the social structure already described. The strong urban-rural divide was not between agriculture and industry – the latter was practically non-existent – but it was the extreme contrast between agriculture and all the ominous trades that bourgeois statistics usually classify under the heading of “services”. Here, actually “unproductive” administration and trade – moreover, predominantly created and nourished in the service of imperialism – and “productive” agriculture faced each other. Of the “peace population” in Phnom Penh of about 600,000, this included about 200,000 Vietnamese and over 100,000 Chinese, out of a total of about 800,000. So the Cambodians did not even make up the majority of the population in their capital. Aristocracy and officials on one side, poor peasants on the other, too poor to make a living in the countryside, coming to the city because they hoped for a job, or later bombed into it. Cambodians were almost completely excluded from the trade and merchant sectors. These sectors were mainly in the hands of the Chinese and Vietnamese.
In this approaching whirlwind of social unrest on the part of the peasants, which is growing in strength, another social force tries for its survival. Young intellectuals, most of them educated in Paris, the educational centre of the former colonial ruler, want to break the corrupt tangle of local aristocracy and foreign power by force. Without any reservoir in the own ranks of the urban bourgeoisie, for the latter is practically non-existent and if it is, then hardly to be enthused for nationalist accumulation programmes with a more rigorous cut; without a proper bourgeois class, these petty-bourgeois radicals lead a practically hopeless struggle for change. Forced very soon into the rural underground by Sihanouk’s authoritarian regime, they try to implement their programme of industrialisation based on agriculture with the help of the only social class that counts – namely the rural population, the small peasants and farm workers.
...
One simply has to quote these illuminating passages of the Khmer Rouge’s “chief ideologist” at length, because after all the imperialist wailing, one probably does not think it possible that these “monsters” can think at all. (A Trotskyist group, persistent in its obtuseness, even opined that these “monsters” were the embodiment of… a return to feudalism!) One thing is immediately quite clear: these petty-bourgeois intellectuals, widely referred to as Marxists, communists, etc., are never ever in the tradition of the “German” Karl Marx, but of the German Friedrich List, who, under the slogan “Freedom is the goal, limitation is the necessity”, set his protectionist credo against the imperialist ideology of the free traders in the last century. The Khmer Rouge leaders are thus spiritual sons of the ancestors of today’s imperialists, those imperialists who now see in them the personified devil of communism, although they only wanted to be flesh of their flesh.
These views of Samphan and thus the leaders of the Khmer Rouge were also quoted at length because they are so popular today. In the face of the growing exploitation of the countries of the so-called Third World by Western imperialism, theories are emerging everywhere that vehemently propose the same position of “cutting off” the “underdeveloped” countries from the dominance of the world market ruled by Western capital as a panacea. And it is certainly no coincidence that one of the main representatives of these academic “revolutionaries”, the Egyptian Samir Amin, raves about the radicalism of the Khmer Rouge even after their expulsion and predicts a chain of new “Kampucheas” for the African future. Against the massive reality of the increasing internationalisation of capital and the growing global control of Western and increasingly Eastern imperialism, such “progressive” petty-bourgeois theorists place their faith in autarky, national accumulation and so-called autocentric development. Against the capitalist propaganda of progress and prosperity through freedom of trade and capital investment, which in reality in fact produces nothing but growing pauperisation and exploitation, the Good News on the other side says: Only if one can free oneself from imperialism at least for as long as it takes to be able to develop one’s productive forces independently, only then will one achieve prosperity and security for humanity.
In this respect, both sides represent only two sides of the same coin. Both claim to be able to achieve “the greatest happiness for the greatest number” within the framework of and through capitalism – as the forefather of these bourgeois tendencies, Adam Smith, already formulated this elementary lie of capital.
...
The utopians of capital have to acknowledge time and again that, contrary to their proclamations, the social antagonisms both within the “developed” and “underdeveloped” countries and between these countries are becoming increasingly acute. And while capitalism is pushing the development of the productive forces ever more sharply in order to satisfy its insatiable hunger for surplus value, it is precisely because of this highly productive technology that it is less and less able to transform the pauperised masses into active proletarians, i.e. to force them to the machines or into the office. While the imperialists, in their frenzied mania for surplus value, are at least throwing the whole world into growing unrest and undermining ancestral immobile relations ever more thoroughly, the heralds of an apparently radical autarky are causing nothing but confusion in the ranks of the pauperising masses. They talk of economic independence, stable economic cycles and adapted technology – all concepts that really bring out their illusionist anachronism.
And to see Cambodia of all places as a concrete approach or even an example for the feasibility of such utopias seems almost tragicomic in view of the results that are now available. But it is also a total misreading of the factual development under the Pol Pot government. Demonisation and idealisation of the Khmer Rouge have the same basis. They assume that the measures taken after the conquest of power in Cambodia were deliberate and planned. One side sees only the terror and coercive measures with which the leaders, supported by relatively small armed forces, tried to get a grip on a witch’s cauldron of panic and violence and to escape the total catastrophe of starvation – and the chaos that would ensue in turn. They see this terror and these coercive measures as completely detached from the economic and social emergency. The others confuse the factual state of extreme social backwardness in Cambodia and the emergency measures taken with an economic and social programme.
...
We have outlined the devastating situation in Cambodia shortly before the moment of liberation. However broad and deep the peasant unrest in the countryside may have been at the time, it must be remembered that a large proportion of these peasants stayed in the capital out of necessity during the main phase of the fighting. In any case, the Khmer Rouge, hardly more than 70,000 men anyway, fought for a long time mainly in the sparsely populated outskirts of Cambodia.
When the Khmer Rouge troops approached the capital in 1975 – likely with only about 20,000 men – it soon became clear that it was imperative to deal radically with this hopelessly bloated big head. Estimates vary, but it can be assumed that of the 7-8 million Cambodians, at least 2.5, but probably over 3 million were crammed into the capital (“peace population” as mentioned 600,000). With the severing of the umbilical cord to imperialism, Phnom Penh was up in the air as its former bridgehead. There was no possibility whatsoever to control or even feed this veritable hell of collaborators and starving refugee masses. The general shortage of rice had driven prices to dizzying heights: from 10 riel per kilo in December 1971 to 125 riel in December 1973 and on to 300 riel in early 1975, reaching a record 340 riel in mid-February. The retreat of the imperialists and the advance of the Khmer Rouge must have acted as a double signal: On the one hand, to storm against the hated parasites and the urbanites in general, on the other hand, to return to the countryside in chaos. The Khmer Rouge had to evacuate the city and channel the returning flow to avoid a total catastrophe. The fact that the displaced people left a wide trail of blood behind them on their way out of the city (for the time of the Khmer Rouge government, there is consistent talk of at least 1 million deaths) was unavoidable under the given conditions. It is significant that the majority of the massacres affected the urban population and certain national minorities: precisely intellectuals, military officers of the old Lon Nol regime, Sihanoukists, capitalists, merchants etc., and apart from the Cham (Muslims) almost exclusively the Vietnamese and Chinese minorities, whose social situation we have already pointed out.
Whether it was spontaneous peasant terror or executions organised by the Khmer Rouge, it was partly revolutionary violence against the supporters of the old regime, which as such does not speak against but for the Khmer Rouge, and partly pogroms, which the leaders at most accepted and tried to direct in the interests of the state monopoly on the use of force. But it is not so important whether the Khmer Rouge leaders had to accept or order these massacres. What is decisive is that they were forced by material development to eliminate or to have eliminated precisely those strata on which they wanted to rely. This, together with the evacuation of the cities, deprived them of any social support other than the peasantry. Thus they were at the mercy of this peasantry, which had to be disciplined for the actualisation of their “programme”. The conflict with it was therefore programmed for the time after the famine had been averted.
...
After the worst of the chaos had been overcome, it was attempted to use these structures, which had prevailed in a rather primitive way during the hunger phase, for one’s “industrialisation programme” by maintaining and further intensifying collectivisation. Necessity was to become a capitalist virtue. The complete lack of such “civilisational” achievements as the intercourse of money and commodities was supposed to make for an ideal, indeed classic, “truck system”, i.e. payment in kind alone. The peasants were forced into ever new production battles, because now surpluses were to be produced for export – i.e. for exchange with foreign means of production – which indeed happened and animated the leaders even further. The general command was under the iron slogan: “Work hard and try to achieve maximum results with a minimum of investment”, and the focus was on absolute labour effort.
...
Once a sufficient level of production had been restored, however, the whole construction was bound to collapse completely sooner rather than later. Anyone who has even a pale inkling of the travails of the infamous Stalinist collectivisation in Russia – and the Russian state was on an incomparably higher social level and had quite different means of power at its disposal – can easily imagine how the intellectual would-be enablers of capitalism in Cambodia, then practically hanging in the air, would have to perish in an orgy of violence – unless, with the help of a foreign power, they could get a grip on the chaos and create more stable conditions through a series of concessions to the peasantry. Most likely, however, they would be finished even then, like a man trying to hold on as long as possible to a wildly thrashing bull and then falling to the ground exhausted. In any case, the arena crowd was already eagerly awaiting the outcome of the tragedy.
...
Sovereignty, neutrality, non-alignment – this credo runs through all declarations as a complement to “autarky”. But already in the face of the first offensive by the Vietnamese, it must have slowly become clear to the Khmer Rouge leaders that these fine words could only have one meaning in our unpleasant world, namely to place themselves under the protection of the People’s Republic of China. In Pol Pot’s interview, which we have just quoted, a strange acronym appears: CPK. This means “Communist Party of Kampuchea”. And yet, to the boundless amazement of bourgeois commentators, the Khmer Rouge had never tried to dress up their declarations or their constitution with Marxist or pseudo-Marxist vocabulary – which is certainly very sympathetic to us. On the contrary, they have displayed an obvious and pedantic aversion to these concepts. Neither “vanguard of the proletariat” or “communist party” nor “proletarian internationalism”, neither “classless society” nor “dictatorship of the proletariat”, but also not “new democratic revolution”, “mass line”, “creation of a new man”, “peaceful coexistence” etc. etc. had ever been spoken of. If similar contents had to be expressed, they were paraphrased with other words. But this did not happen because the Pol Pot folks would have been particularly honest and wanted to do us Marxists a favour. This happened because in their dogged nationalism they wanted to distance themselves clearly from their neighbours Vietnam, but also China, who professed to be “socialist”. The national character of all these revolutions and states, the national character of their confrontations and of their whole politics is expressed even in the fact that the weakest link feels compelled by the instinct of self-preservation to dispense with the “Marxist” or “socialist” cloak for the capitalist programme! This is what “socialism in one country” has come to! And the adoption of the “Marxist” “vocabulary” here is a sign of the surrender of the so sacred national sovereignty. If, as already mentioned, no announcement had ever mentioned a party or revolutionary phases (there was always talk of a “revolutionary organisation” and even of “Angkor traditions”), Pol Pot told his astonished people and all those who wanted to know the following story on 27 September 1977: the CPK had already existed in Cambodia since 30 September 1960 and had achieved this miracle of a national-democratic revolution. He told it the day before he left for Beijing, on which, fighting a losing battle against the Vietnamese, he has been completely dependent ever since.
As a “plaything of foreign powers”, the nationalist intellectuals of Cambodia perished. The peasantry, largely decimated under the pressure of the imperialist frenzy and its consequences, as now under the pressure of Vietnam’s national expansion, is an example of the fate that capitalist society reserves for small and weak peoples in its emergence and development. To such peoples the proletariat alone would and will secure the right of self-determination, because unlike the bourgeoisie it does not seek national privileges but wants to abolish them, because unlike the bourgeoisie it can create voluntary union, because unlike the bourgeoisie it liberates itself not by exploiting others but by abolishing all exploitation.

2024.05.17 07:50 No-Tangelo-5062 Old Coach Bullied Son

My husband picked my 9 year old son up from practice a week ago. He noticed he was away from his coaches and team with two of his old coaches from last season on the side of the field.
As he approached he noticed my son’s old coach was standing over him, pointing in his face and calling him a bully, telling him with a shaky voice that “if he ever did that again he would have him running laps all night long”.
The assistant coach was about ten feet away throwing the ball to his son. His older son (8) was standing next to my son with his back to the coach and my son. They were inside the batting cage. The coach also didn’t see my husband approaching. My husband could see my son was holding back tears and was terrified so he told him to go the car. The coach seemed to snap out of it and mumbled “something happened at school” then quickly shakes my husband’s hand and turned around to walk away.
My son cried for an hour afterwards and was scared and confused. He explained after practice that his old coach gestured for him to come over in a subtle way. He said once he got to him his tone changed to being angry as he accused him of telling the other boy he “sucked” at baseball and calling my son a bully.
My son didn’t understand why he was so mad and explained what seemed like a playful interaction between him and the boy where he said “why don’t you throw something I can hit next time” (speaking about their game the day before), then both boys smiled and walked away. Clearly his understanding of the interaction was more of a witty banter type exchange. My son also has adhd and this is how he communicates. Many adults and some kids are often annoyed or offended by his brazen personality.
My husband and I were shook that our son had been verbally assaulted this way by an adult that we all respected and trusted. We told my son’s current coach who’s advice was to write an email to the little league board and player agent. So we did.
The next day my son had a game and asked to walk the long way around the field to avoid his old coach. He also told us he and the other kids “knew” they couldn’t be friends at school anymore.
We received a response from the league rep a week later saying that their “investigation” had no findings. They had questioned the coach, assistant coach (child’s father) and the other child and one other coach (who was nowhere close during the event) and no one thought his reaction was aggressive. They acknowledged his actions were wrong and said he would not coach my son again. They added that they also looked into the matter between my son and the other boy and confirmed there was no further bullying happening so they were “closing that investigation as well” then they informed us that they have an anti-bullying policy.
My son is starting the TOC this week. I don’t want to leave him alone anymore. None of his coaches have talked to him since the incident, or me and my husband. Everyone is avoiding us. We’re heartbroken. He absolutely loved playing baseball - but it’s obvious this local league is only protecting the interests of the volunteer coaches and not the children.
We reached out to safesport and USA baseball per the code of conduct. Dead-ends everywhere - where are the protections for emotional verbal bullying from adults for kids in youth sports?
Finally heard from the LL board president (after contacting LL international). Who wants to meet my husband at the field tomorrow.
My son has his second TOC game tomorrow and will play his old coach/team on Saturday if they win. Already concerned he’s psyched out.

2024.05.17 07:47 StrangeCanon Superman's Movies never portray his Ideals Properly

I have seen most of the Superman movies. But all those movies do the same thing. A villain comes who overpowers Superman and then at the end Superman overpowers them and wins and its over.
But where are his ideals. Remember the Captain America movies, they show how strong Steve Rogers has become after taking the Super Soldier Serum and his fighting skills but they also showed Steve Rogers is not just his physical strength but his ideals too.
Even before he got his power, he would always stand up even if he was outclassed. He choose to make the sacrificial play in at the end of the first movie. He did not fight back at the end of the second movie against Bucky, he decided to protect his friend in the third movie and he understood he has hurt Tony, so he gives up on the shield and even writes a letter to Tony. And lastly when he found himself against a whole army, he did not give up and decided to face them.
But in case of Superman the only movies that showed his strong ideals were Man of Steel and Superman 2006. Yes, Superman 2006, even though the whole movie was not great, he took an entire kryptonite island and threw it in space even though he knew he might not survive that and Man of Steel has so many instances of that especially that last part where he has to choose between Zod and a family.
But after that he just fell off in the next movies.
I just want a movie where there is a perfect balance of Superman's Power and his ideals like Captain America.
Imagine if a movie has a dialogue like-"For the first time in his life he had to struggle against an opponent, for the first time in his life Superman doubted his strength in battle as Doomsday was overpowering him but he did not falter. He knew he was the only thing that was between this monster and his world, he is only hope this world has against this monster and he cannot give up as this is the point he has to push past his limits, he has to win no matter what and he cannot afford to lose" something like that and he gets up.
Just like how they write Batman's stories. Because mental strength is not a Batman exclusive thing but it is what is inside all the heros, which makes them heros in the first place.
That is the kind of movie I want to see. A movie where we get to see that its not his strength and his heritage that makes him superman but his ideals.

2024.05.17 07:34 mertzie_plays I am questioning everything - marriage issue - getting divorced - REALLY LONG

I hate to make really long posts, but i think without context, the weight of my questions will not make sense. If you don't want to read the whole thing, I understand, but PLEASE don't comment if you are only going to read the last 4 sentences...
Pre 2008, She was kind of a gothic girl, attempting to recover from some questionable teenage choices. Was forced to go to Catholic school and mass until she was in HS, at which point she went to a public school and got pretty crazy. She had vaguely religious beliefs and morels (for the most part) but was 100% non practicing.
I was NOT religious growing up "at all". My dad was a brutal SOB, that was verbally and occasionally physically abusive to everything in his path. I did spend 6 months living with my sister and we went to "super church bible study service" on Saturdays. As I got older I started to have a non denominational blind faith.
We meet in 2005. By 2008 marriage was on the table and even though we had been 100% non practicing, she insisted that we get married in the catholic church. I had no issues with it. We did the classes, attended mass, and got married. Almost immediately after the honeymoon... she decided that she didn't really like going to a catholic church and after a little church shopping, we stopped going to any church.
Early 15 - 6 years married, IMO, everything in our lives up to this point has been going well. Of course we had some bumps in the road, but nothing major and no lasting issues. Now, she is pregnant and about to pop with out first child.
After my son is born she got very weird. For one... she stopped wanting to have sex, and previously that was a very common way for us to bond. I thought she may be having some PPDepression and thought nothing much of it. She took to parenting a baby really well, no issues there. Around the one year mark she started going out with "work friends", not coming home till midnight or 2am. She had NEVER done anything like this before, and I my mind started to wonder and wander....
2016, She came home drunk after a night of hanging out with "work friends". Now, keep in mind, usually she would come home half intoxicated and either jump into the shower or go straight to bed... but this night she came home and wanted to have sex (with protection).
And she is pregnant again.
Sex again goes full stop and she did not manage this pregnancy as good as the first. With our son or the unborn, but our relationship was a dumpster fire.... I change jobs so to could work normal hours and be more available for my son and her. Baby girl is born.
Despite a near immaculate conception, I was hoping a second child would make her happier... It didn't. It made it worse. Everything in our relationship is still BAD. She was so distant that I questioned if the girl was even mine. All the circumstances combined... secretly did a paternity test and the girl was/is mine. That put my mind somewhat at ease, but things were still rough... but about to get worse.
2017, Even though our marriage didn't feel like a marriage anymore, we were not outright fighting a lot. She was just very distant and had this "ora" of hate towards me. This was beginning of the inevitable end. She tells me that she can't stand sleeping in the same bed as me anymore.... considering she was only like 4 months post birth, and still nursing, it was stupid for here to go downstairs and sleep on the couch. So being the nice guy... I did.
Days turned into weeks, and I was really starting to struggle with the situation as a whole. But I kept giving her space... talking with her when she felt up to it. Weeks turned into months. The couch turned into a bed... in the basement. Months turned into years... but i don't want to get ahead of myself.
Over 17/18 she started getting very dark. Like I could see that she was having a psychotic break. I talked with her parents and they said she was diagnosed bipolar as a tween. I tried to be supportive. I tried getting her to go to counseling, with me, without me, anywhere, anyhow... she refused. We were still having regular conversations after the kids went to bed... where she mostly went over everything I had ever done wrong... beating me into the ground... I would apologize over and over. Sometimes it was "leaving the seat up that morning"... sometimes it was for some stupid thing I did 5 years prior.
Note, during our marriage, I never drank, did drugs, gambled, cheated, etc. I wasn't abusive in any way; quite the opposite actually, I was and in some ways still am very passive and let people walk all over me because I am so viscerally opposed to turning into my dad, that I tend to tolerate being mis treated rather than reacting to it.
SO over time, these discussions became less frequent but more toxic. They were more of an opportunity for her to verbally attack me for all kinds of things.. even things that were not real... or did not happen the way she remembers. She told me she didn't ever really love me, and that she lied, and she should have never married me, etc... Like really hateful stuff. I was seeing a counselor at this point because this was destroying me. I started thinking about divorce, but I kept hoping she would pull through. The conversations eventually stopped and we were just two disconnected people living in the same house.
As the kids started to grow into toddlers, she started to show anger towards them. Not like in daily life, but anytime they did something wrong. Now, admittedly, I am HYPER sensitive to this because of my childhood. She was becoming verbally abusive to them. Maybe not with the words chosen, but she would outright SCREAM at them... like "loose her shit, scream at them" for 5 minutes. It got to the point I was recording it.
After about 5 HUGE screaming fights with me about it... (I was threatening to call CPS on her and divorce her), she broke down and accepted that she was doing wrong.
Over the next few months, she started wanting to got to church. She was screaming at the kids less. While me and her were still just room mates, she seemed to be healing. As months turned into years, she continued to treat the kids better, and at this point we were going to church fairly regularly as a family. You would think this is where things get better... and you'd be wrong.
By 2021, she had dove 1000% into religion. And only practices the most extreme parts of almost every Christian based religion. No Pork, kosher only, All holidays are pagan. Mothers day, fathers day, birthdays, pagan. Christmas and easter are not guaranteed correct dates, pagan. Speaking in tongues... like anything that you can think of that a non Christian would call crazy... she does that.
Meanwhile she has become more and more toxic towards me. From not letting me spend time with the kids alone; to yelling at me, calling me a liar, evil, toxic, etc... even in front of our kids.
About 6 months ago her delusions skyrocketed. Behind closed doors, she believes that she is a prophetess. And she is blaming me for things that never happened. One example, she came running into the room, yelling at me "because I just called him stupid".... me and my son looked at each other, like what the heck is she talking about? I never called him stupid. We were talking about something silly he saw in a video. I told him "that's kinda stupid, don't ever do anything like that". A specific example... tonight I am tucking my daughter in... after out hugs and kisses, I am walking out and stumbling over things on the floor... I say to her "honey, you should focus on cleaning in here this weekend, the mess is getting a bit ridiculous". She smiles, throws me the "i love you sign" and says, "I know dad, I will".... and before my daughter could even finish her words, my wife is yelling from another room "how dare you call her ridiculous?". She comes trudging into the room, and shake my head and retreat back to my basement... she follows me the entire way, yelling at me for being rede and disrespectful to her daughter. Telling me that she will stand up for her daughter.... the entire way back to the basement.. , for something that didn't even happen.
But I digress, this kind of stuff has been happening more regularly. About 3 months ago, I put cameras up in the common areas of our house, because I am honestly scared that she is going to accuse me of doing or saying something that never happened. Something that she could scream from the roof tops. Something she could say in front to a police officer or a judge to get a divorce and full custody. I have used these cameras and recordings to prove to her, on several occasions, that she is wrong about a specific situation or downright delusional with others. And while she initially seemed receptive to "being called out", anymore she finds any proven inaccuracies to simply be an attack on her.
I am getting verbally assaulted over something that didn't happen... Shortly later, I pull the video and PROVE that she is wrong about it, and she STILL denies it or downplays it... I get angry... then that turns into her claiming that I am being verbally abusive TO HER!
This week, I told her that I am actively filing for divorce - not as a threat, but because I am actively working with an attorney, gathering the paperwork, and I am divorcing her.
Expecting her to attempt to reconcile, she leaves me a one page letter that has me question her sanity. I write her a 5 page letter in response, I clipped the last page, it is all text but NSFW.
I am using an imgur link of the letter and response, as posting pics is questionable in the rules. https://imgur.com/a/n6pJOBv
I guess my main question is: WHAT THE HECK am I doing, is she doing, are we doing... ? Am I okay or justified in getting a divorce? Should I feel bad about wanting to get full custody? Could her issues be a mental disorder or should I just "chalk it up" to religious freedom? I am questioning MY faith completely because of her actions justified by her faith. - How am I supposed to get past this?
Honestly, I am not even sure what to ask... I think I am just looking for approval or understanding... I would appreciate any constructive input.

2024.05.17 06:58 Mangobananasauce [NV/CA] Custody and RO question

Writing this on behalf of a family member who does not use reddit.
-Can a father get a restraining order against an ex-girlfriend to restrict her from seeing his child? Or would that require a revised custody agreement?
Father is currently in Nevada. Ex gf is in Nevada. Mother is in Calfornia. Grandma is in California.
My brother, the dad, (42M) has a shared custody agreement (child is 9yo) w ex wife. This agreement was made after the mother kidnapped and moved child to another state (Texas) 8 hours away in secret. Dad hired atty and got shared custody based on those demographics. Mom moved back to same state shortly after new bf didn't work out. A few years later, Dad moves 5 hours away for a better job. He works days/nights/weekends in the tourism industry. Mother is primary parent. The child spends much of her time and weekends with grandma (father's mom.) Grandma picks child up from school 2-3x per wk atm (has fluctuated up to 5-7 days a week over the years) and is the go-to babysitter for ex wife. Custody agreement has not been revised.
More background: Ex wife has a drinking problem, just got breathalyzer taken off car. Has gotten into 2 serious car accidents on her way to pu her child from grandmas over the last 5 ish years. She can show up 6 hours late. Grandma has had to tell her no sometimes when coming to pick up child. She's never had any job for over a year except uber eats.
Dad should be taking his daughter more often. He works in tourism in a high anxiety/high stress environment, not regular 9-5. He does pay child support and for daughter to go to a private school. And he does see his daughter, they went to a father-daughter dance last month. He sees her roughly 3-4x a year for 1-2 week long vacations and they regularly speak on the phone.
Dad dated a new lady for 1.5 years. This woman is older, mid-late 50's. Very sad she never had a child...she's very open about that. Met the daughter 3 times, and SHE (no one else) felt a very strong connection. New gf has lots of money and wanted to hire an atty to take the daughter from the ex wife, whom she said was "horrible." Dad refused as he did not want to do that to the ex. (Despite the mother kidnapping child years prior, father refused to do that to the mother. )
Dad and new gf break up. Ex gf befriends ex wife post breakup. Crazy lady posted on facebook how shes now co-parenting this child and she's a step parent. And she's showering the ex wife w $ and compliments of being the best mom...sends uber eats, gas money, and showering little girl with horse riding lessons, clothes, restaurants. And both are admittingly telling the child that something is wrong with dad cause he's not around every weekend. (The ex wife was not telling the child this prior, just recently after the ex gf befriended her.)
More info on the new ex girlfriend, she is heavily involved in mlm's and she is a business marketing consultant that seems to be running from lawsuits left and right. She uses holistic health speak to gaslight ppl and justify her actions. When ppl are like - "hey you ripped me off!" she says stuff like "I hope you find time to heal" and "ill pray for you" She has used many iterations of her name, lots of LLC's. She seems to be very successful and being dishonest. There are many business complaints about this person online that document this.
The father has expressed to the ex wife that he does not want his daughter to spend any more time with the ex gf. Then the child told grandma that there is a future trip planned for the daughter to visit the ex gf, facilitated by the ex wife. Grandma told dad (her son.) Dad called ex wife and told her again he did not want his daughter spending more time with this woman. The next day, ex gf wrote an email to grandma saying that grandma's house is no longer safe because the information re the trip was shared with the father. It was very creepy. This woman has only known this family and the dynamics for 2 years but is speaking like she has parental rights to this child.
-Can Dad get an RO against this ex gf from seeing his child? Or will he need a revised custody agreement?
-Is it ok for the mother to leave the child with this woman (ex gf) in NV for extended vacations without mom (she is dropping off in NV then returning to CA) if it's against the father's wishes? If he does not feel it's a safe environment.
Edited: clarity

Original Post: March 28, 2024
I (32F) have a daughter (9 going on 10F) with my ex-husband (36M). We divorced when she was 3. He then remarried with one of his co-workers (let's call her Melissa). They also have a son together (6M).
My daughter's birthday is in 9 days. I reviewed with my daughter things for her birthday, like the theme, the cake... Here's the issue: when we were going through the guest list, she looked anxious. When I asked what's wrong, she told me that she did not want to invite Melissa. I asked her why and she explained to me that Melissa would make weird comments sometimes around other parents/ to her .
For example, when Melissa would pick her up from her dance lesson, she would hear Melissa say things like "That is why I prefer boys, girls only like pink and tutu", calling her a brat, and other things. She also told me that every time her brother (Melissa and ex-h's kid) would do something to annoy her (like breaking her toys, calling her names, starting a fight), Melissa would always defend her son and punish her every time and say "boys will be boys" or some crap like that .
I asked about her dad and she said that she does that when her dad is around, but he is always in his office so it is like a free pass. Later on, I called her father. He asked for the date of the party (her real birthday is a school day). I told him that his wife was not invited and I think I was in loudspeaker because I heard Melissa screaming at me saying that I "destroy her family"
So, AITA for not inviting my ex-husband's wife to my daughter's birthday party because she told me not to?
Okay, just for precision:
There is not consensus bot on AITAH, but the majority of comments were NTA
Update Post: April 8, 2024 (10 days later)
So, a lot happened. First of all, I met my ex for lunch alone. I explained everything that my daughter told me. At first, he was defensive and told me that she was overreacting. I replied that even if that were true, his relationship with his daughter is at risk. I gave him a choice: fix the problem or I go back to court for more custody.
Friday, when I came to pick my daughter up at his house, I talked to her in private, and she told me that her dad spent time with her, picking her up from school/activities, helping her with homework, and playing with her. Melissa then told me that she accepts not going to the party but still wanted to see my daughter blow out her candles on her actual birthday. She baked a cake and asked her (my dautghter) if she was okay with doing it before leaving. She seemed okay with it, so we gathered around the cake (my daughter, Melissa, ex, and half-brother). When my daughter blew out the candles, M junior decided that the good thing to do would be to smash my daughter's face into the cake....(To be honest, if this was not a kid, I would be in prison.) He and Melissa burst out laughing while my daughter was crying.
Melissa then told her that she was being dramatic and "emotional." We (Melissa, ex, and I) got into an argument, and to my surprise, my ex-husband was on my side, saying that it was not okay. While arguing, I noticed that my daughter was not there, so I left to check on her. I helped her clean herself, and then we left for my house. I tried to cheer her up, but she was still a little sad. The party went well, her dad came, and during the party, I told him that I want more custody because of his wife's bullying. So yeah, I will update you if anything happens.
Precision 2 :
Some of you asked questions about my daughter's reaction. My daughter is a really shy and silent kid. Except for me and her dad, she does not talk unless spoken to or if you bring up a subject that she likes. When something upsets her, she just stays silent and cries. It's always been like that and it is what she did. Started crying, went to her room.
Relevant Comments:
To be honest, I don't entirely blame the kid. He probably picked up that attitude from his mom
Commenter: If you are going to court for more custody time, ask for increased child support as well.
OOP: I don't receive child support. I earn more than him
(OOP to a different commenter) I live in California, so in a 50/50 custody arrangement, the parent with the higher income pays child support (which means I pay) At least this is what I got
Commenter: What did your ex-husband say when you wanted more custody? I mean, does he not see his new wife as terrorizing his daughter?
OOP: It went approximately like this:
Me: I want more custody.
Ex: What? I know she was mean, but you can't do this to me.
Me: Really? Your wife is bullying our daughter. I've told you before, you did not keep the promise, so I'm going for more custody.
BLAH BLAH BLAH...
Does he recognize that Melissa is mistreating his daughter?
He apologized for their behavior and told me he would fix it. BUT he asked me not to fight for more custody
Update Post 2: April 19, 2024 (11 days from previous post)
Update 2: Hi! I saw that many of you asked for an update.
*My daughter: After the cake "incident," I asked her questions about whether M/half brother had ever laid hands on her, played such "pranks" on her, or behaved inappropriately (we never know). She told me no, explaining that the fights with her half-brother are mainly him annoying her. I also inquired if anyone else from both sides had made her uncomfortable in any way, and again, she said no. Since my last post, she has been seeing her psychiatrist twice a week. The bullying apparently started about two months ago. I don't know if it is related (although I am sure it is), but it was also around that time that Melissa had a miscarriage.
*Me: To be honest, I feel like a terrible mom. I did not see the signs. I am trying to fix everything.
*My ex-husband: GUESS WHO SHOWED UP AT MY DOOR AT 10 PM???? He called me last night, was outside, and said he wanted to talk. I let him in, and because I don't trust him (I really don't), I recorded the whole conversation (with his consent).
He told me that since the party, he's been thinking about what to do and yesterday told Melissa about my desire for more custody. From what he told me, she said that it was not such a bad idea because my daughter was not fitting into their family dynamic. They started to argue, and at one point, she just started cursing me and my daughter. Apparently, I am a sneaky B-word who is bitter about her affair with my ex-husband. She described my daughter as a spoiled, bratty princess who needs correction. And now, he has to choose between which woman he loves the most.
This is where he had the click! He left the house, drove around, and then showed up at my place. He is going to stay at a friend's house to think about his relationship with Melissa. Our daughter will stay with me during the week and visit him on the weekends. I told him that if he's going to get back together with Melissa, I am continuing with full custody. But if they divorce, it will depends of his custody for his son because I don't want him around my daughter. He agreed.
That's it. Thank you for all the support.
Relevant Comment:
Commenter: I suspect Melissa miscarried a girl and that's what she's turned poisonous against your daughter and you. Grief and guilt. You did a job thing keeping your daughter away.
OOP: I just know that she was between 3 and 4 months pregnant.
*****New Update Post: May 9, 2024 (3 weeks later, 1+ months from OG post)****\*
Final Update : Hi again! y'all ask for an update. Here you go :
*My ex-h : Earlier in the week, he asked if he could come by,saying that he had something important to tell me. He told me that last friday Melissa junior got into trouble at school for cursing at a girl.
Long story short : he confessed his fellings to a girl (the niece of the director), she rejected him. Apparently, he started shouting insults at her that no 6-year-old should know, let alone say. Because of this incident and our daughter's situation he decided to divorce Melissa. She would be served the divorce papers next week. He is also going to pay Melissa in therapy because he still wants her to have a relationship with their son.
We (ex-h,daughter,me) will also be attending family therapy together.
*My daughter : She is happier now, and that's the only thing that matters to me. For the summer I am going to take her to Japan to see my side of the family !
Brooke, if one day you read this, mama loves you more than anything. I am sorry for seeing everything earlier. I love you!!!!!!!
Precision 3 :
  1. I am still going for full custody of my daughter with visitation the week-end. If and only IF Melissa junior's behaviour improves, I will let him and my daughter interact.
  2. He (my ex) is going for full custody of his son.
  3. I still don't trust my ex-h. I am keeping my eyes on him, and how he will raise my daughter. I don't know why people would assume that I am going to nice with him. Am I polite? Yes. Nice? No.
  4. I am not going for more custody because he wants his son. Because he recently got a promotion so works more. He doesn't have the time to take care of our daughter on the week days so I take her.
  5. Someone asked me our races (for some reason??). I am Japanese, like my ex-h, and Melissa is white (French).
  6. Like I said I am Japanese but was raised in France so French is my first language, than Japanese, than English (sorry for any mistakes)
Relevant Comments:
Commenter: Just a question , when it was 50/50 why not your time it’s a bday party for your side and on his time he can do that . I know it’s harder for thanksgiving and Xmas just the schedule can be worked out.
OOP: We decided to host the party at my place, inviting both sides of the family. I live in a house, whereas he and Melissa lived in an apartment. If she is with me at Thanksgiving, she would be with him at Christmas, and vice versa.
Commenter: v glad that op's daughter is now safe, but ngl i am worried about op's ex's son - it's honestly kind of disturbing that he knows those insults & i'm concerned about what m (or mb others in his life) are teaching him. hopefully op's ex gets full custody and things improve.
OOP: Yeah... I don't know what he heard his mother say, but a 6-year-old saying that a girl is being "heartless b-word" or a "W word" is VERY disturbing

2024.05.17 06:25 Afraid_Salamander713 So this is kinda an unpopular opinion but I really dislike it when the gang is either sexualized or shipped together, particularly Dally/Johnny

So this has been on my mind for a while now comming across these fandoms , and I don't mean for this post to come off as offensive to some or those who do ship the characters but I just really wanted to get my opinion across. I truly hope I'm not the only one who genuinely has a problem with the way male friendships are being reduced to romance or how the characters are sexualized in this fandom or fiction in general. The amount of posts that I see not only on Tumblr but on Pinterest of Dallas either shirtless or Ponyboy just being in a completely normal photo and people in the comments talking about how they want to do "dirty things" to pony, how they wanna sit on him, or just sexualizing poor Matt Dillion and the whole gang in general. Some of these photos aren't even sexual to begin with but these fangirls will always find a way to make this inappropriate, like yea we get it you find Soda attractive but sis he's still only 16! Like yes I've seen the posts and edits of that shower scene with the towel and it's gross. Like it's one thing to find a particular actor or character attractive and have a crush on them but these thirst traps and, just downright creepy comments, and edits comming from these GROWN WOMAN are insane. I mean even if they are just "fictional characters" I still feel like you should have far more respect and class than this. Some of the actors were still minors and others just barley legal teenagers when filming so it's still wrong either way. Now in regards to shipping the gang together I also have my fair share of opinions. Pinterest is in general a pretty weird and toxic place, like you can find a post for example with Johnny and Pony just standing next to each other and the comments are flooded with " they were roomates", or "they should've made out", "Johnny got cake" like you see where I'm going with this! Johnny is a child bro he literally looks like he's 10 years old wdym "he got that cake" should I put you on a watch list sir?? And not to mention the fanfiction especially on tumblr and Ao3 is pretty disgusting, they will literally write an extremely sexualized story of the whole friend group banging each other (and yes that included the three brothers) and ponyboy not to mention he's 14 shipping him with two-bit who's like 18. People nowadays will ship anything and everything, you could have two characters who virtually never interacted or otherwise just made eye contact for like 15 seconds and you already got the shippers flooding the fandoms ready to write love stories. It seems as though people just can't enjoy things for what they are instead of always trying to change plots and characters, and make every platonic male relashionship romantic or gay. People bring up how Pony and Johnny cuddled in the church and "friends don't do that" well it sounds more like you don't do that but some people are natrually more affectionate than others. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just that you can't base every assumption just becuase of what you see. Some who ship Dally and Johnny will being up the part in the book where Dally admits to Johnny being the only thing he ever loved and how he wanted to die for him. I'm sorry but I know plenty of guys who will take a bullet for their friends and say I love you it's no big deal and it's not gay either. Like do people really think that telling someone you love them equals to romantic attraction now? Like what about your family is it gay for a son to tell his father I love you?? Like I seriously don't understand some people's logic. I feel like these chronically online Tumblr fangirls are just a bunch of straight woman who have either never witnessed a positive male friendship or just find the idea of two good looking guys in a relationship. Either way it's pretty messed up if the only thought that comes to mind whenever two characters express emotion with each other is that they are dating. I mean I can't tell others what to ship but man are these fanfic writers weird.

2024.05.17 06:19 Sun_Shine_Buds I'm baaaackkk!!! Update....

Happy Post Mother's Day Aussie Mums! and to anyone else who celebrates Mother's Day on Sunday the 11th of May. My apologies, I am ignorant to this holiday outside of thunder from down under.
My MIL was blinded by the light as I set my shiny spine to Diamond BLAST mode. She retreated back down her mole hole and out of sight until hubby returned from his overseas trip. Upon return hubby let his mother know he was safely back in the country, just a courtesy, and then we had a lot of catching up to do *wink wink*.
For those of you who asked, hubby had bought me some waterproof boots for winter for mother's day as our kid has recently started a winter sport and it gets f*cking cold. Wet socks and shoes is no joke so he remedied that situation for me in the form of some nice new boots! I will be the hottest Mum at the sporting fields!
Also, for those who read my post history and asked, I didn't unblock my MIL's number. She ambushed me from a new number. Don't panic! It's all good! I have remedied that situation, her old number and the new number are all successfully blocked so she can't play ping pong with me. Next time (as we all know there will always be a next time) if it looks and sounds like MIL, it will be a MIL and I will not respond at all. I will be blocking any MIL sounding number texts from the get go from now on with a rinse and repeat! Another lesson learned!
After hubby settled in at home, I fed and watered him and then made him go and have a sleep. Whilst he was snoozing, I got his bags unpacked, washing sorted and anything not worn put away. The devil herself decided to ring non-stop for 3 hours trying to get her beloved son on the phone. I ended up turning his phone off to end the incessant ringing after the 10th attempt and we didn't think of it again until the next day.
When hubby turned his phone on before leaving for work the following day, he had a whopping 106 missed calls, 13 voicemails and 15 text messages from MIL. He deleted all the voicemail messages without listening to them and cleared the phones call log history so the 106 missed calls disappeared. He also deleted all the texts, because f*ck reading those..... (he literally said that LMAO).
He went off to work and then on the way home he decided to give her a call. Phone convo went like this:
MIL: OH! My dear boy! I was so worried, why didn't you answer my calls?!!!
Hubby: OP got me home, fed me up, I turned my phone off and then I crawled into bed to sleep. Man she's so awesome! She unpacked all my stuff, put if away and got all my washing sorted for me. Man she's the best! I missed her and son so bloody much. It's great to be home.
By this point in time I imagined gigantic pikachu face. Hubby said he meant every word but knew that would stir her up.
MIL: Oh never mind her! You missed my Mother's Day! All your siblings came over and we had a wonderful lunch, OP did not come of course. I extended a lovely invitation but she declined, claimed she was celebrating with her own mother or something like that.
Hubby: Oh yes! I saw the messages you sent her from your NEW number. How nice of you not to let her know off the bat it was you. I also saw she replied to you in kind.
MIL: What? You have seen the messages I sent her.
Hubby: Of coarse! She took a screen shot of them on Saturday when you sent them to her and sent them to me so I could see you had contacted her.
By this point in time hubby said MIL was almost hyperventilating on the other end of the phone. Hubby continued,
Hubby: I was especially surprised by the fact you called her an idiot. That wasn't very nice, was it mum?
MIL: *crickets*
Hubby: Not to worry. We are busy next week with sons birthday, then the week after its our wedding anniversary, I know you detest the day, so I won't be asking you to celebrate that one with us The following weekend were away, at this stage Mum I may be able to visit you towards the end of June. Things may change of course but I'll let you know.
MIL: *silent*
Hubby: Mum, are you still there? I can't hear you, well if your still there and your listening, hope you have a great day, I'm home safe, it was nice to hear from you and I'll talk to you again soon to organise to come see you towards the end of June. Cya mum!
*click*
Hubby said it was f*cking hilarious. That was on Wednesday. Haven't heard from her since..... Stick that in your mole hole and smoke it!
Edit: spelling - ma bad

2024.05.17 06:01 Vast-Listen1457 069 The Not-Immortal Blacksmith II – Elsewhere and Otherwise II

[Vast Listen, head curator of the “Heretic Collection” here! Today, while our “Heroes” and Maxwell are doing their thing, and currently it’s just boring travel, I thought we would take a look at the goings-on of the rest of the world.]

Smithson’s Family Forge
El Gato, god king of all he surveyed, sat on his favorite spot and watched the newest kittens play under the old Pando tree that had grown in the courtyard. He had “watered” the tree yesterday, and it now had a new branch growing that he could hardly wait to lounge on in a few weeks when it had grown strong enough. He smiled slightly, then yawned and repositioned himself for his midmorning nap.
The spirit of the tree climbed up next to him and lay back, giving him scritches behind the ears, “This really is the best place to catch the sun when I’m not home.”
“Of course it is.” El Gato replied, “It is my spot after all.”
The pair watched the newest batch of students as they came and went. Especially one student who hadn’t gotten the announcement that you didn’t “mess with the cats”. The student had had to learn the hard way what “FAFO” means, and would have scars on his left cheek for the rest of his life.
El Gato and the tree curled up on the sundrenched statue of The Heretic, the ever-living patron saint of the school, and dozed.

The Elven Kingdom
The young king stood on the throne yelling at his servants. “No! That’s not how that happened!” He sighed. “The Heretic gave his big speech, then the shield came up; not the other way around!” Armatures! I will have to send to the School of Rio for the full play. “Alright, set the scene and try again!”

The Undermountain Dwarven Kingdoms
Bjorn sat on the Throne of Stone in the great cathedral as his bishops, priests, and the rest sat in orderly rows before him. “No, Bishop Glod, songs about digging holes in the mine are NOT acceptable hymns to me; they are hymns to my grandfather!” The bishop shrank back.
“I don’t mind the hymns being sung in my temples, but they are for him, not me, and I don’t want to take what is his domain.” Bjorn tried to explain. “I am the god of crafting, not of mining and stone and such. Please don’t confuse the two of us.”
The assembled clergy began speaking in hushed tones that became louder and louder. Eventually the noise reached such a crescendo that Bjorn had to use his “god” voice to silence the thousands in attendance. “I know, I know. The Heretic. Look, Maxwell is by Friend; nothing more, nothing less! He is not my disciple; not my next of kin; not my prophet; and decidedly NOT my lover!”
The crowd became silent again, “And on that note, allow me to introduce my Actual lover, the small goddess…”

Fates
The three sides of fate sat at their tapestry. The Crone sat cross-legged on the ground of the cave, building a small tower of stones. The Mother sat on a comfortable chair, nursing a forgotten child. The Maiden was running another thread across the tapestry of life when she opened her mouth to end the silence.
“Don’t you dare.” The Crone snapped, pulling her eyes from the tower she was constructing. “We don’t want to stir that pot again, not for another thousand years.”
“But—” The Maiden started.
“Were you not listening when that man stopped by for a chat last century?” The Mother asked as she placed the baby over her shoulder and gave it a pat on the back, causing it to burp. “He had a very stern warning for us not to interfere with the Heretic.”
“He even threatened ~US~ with a stern letter.” The Crone added. “That is the last thing we need.”
The Maiden harumphed. “I still want to know who allowed the potion to work on him.”
“That makes three of us.” The Crone replied. “If I ever find out who was responsible for that, I will stick a finger in their ribs, and twist their soul.”
Meanwhile, in the celestial realm, Kocha, god of chaos, felt a spike of ice drive itself through his soul. He looked around, then went back to reading the Beta Material for the Humans and High-rises game.

The Celestial Realm, again…
Esmeralda, the goddess of Wisdom, sat at her desk, writing a stern letter to Brother Proof for going missing in the stacks; again; when she felt an uncomfortable twinge. “Oh my, it seems that one of my clerics has been killed. I wonder where?” She looked at a ball sitting on a tall stand next to her desk, and it rolled around until a “chain” of three islands was facing her. “Oh, the southern most of the…Heretic Isles…”

It's been a minute.
I was going to stream this weekend. It's not going to happen. I'm way over my head trying to figure it out, and I lack the brain. I wonder if I'm just getting to old for this shit. Doesn't help that for reasons I'm late as hell getting this out.
Life sucks.
Take care, y'all.

2024.05.17 05:58 JJ2161 What I wish the "Gods Arc" in Legacies could've been like (kind of a fanfic idea).

So, first some context. For a long time, I have always thought about what it would be like to have a story about vampires in which the antagonist is the god of the sun. I think the first time I thought about it was when watching Blade when I was little. In this film, the main villain, Deacon Frost, wanted to awaken the Blood God La Magra, who was said to be the God of Vampires. In Blade Trinity, the first vampire was often refered to as the Vampire God, if I'm not wrong. So, I always thought how obvious it was and yet why no one ever wrote anything similar. There are even a feel stories with vampires involving gods or mentioning them, like Castlevania Nocturne, but I've never seen a mention of a sun god in vampire-related media.
Added to all that, I started thinking about having a story with a moon god related to werewolves. Now, this is not common at all in offical media, but fanfic and overall amateur original fiction that deal with the werewolf genre does mention lunar deities quite often. Most of the times, the moon god is presented as simply part of werewolf culture and beliefs, but not necessarily real, and sometimes even as real, but not a very present force.
Then I was told Legacies were introducing gods and I got excited.
Now, I have to be honest with you. I kinda hated Legacies. Don't get me wrong. I love the idea of it, and I love many of the characters. But, damn, this show was a mess. So bad. I hated the idea of Mallivore. I liked the idea of a past in which other supernatural beings existed, but they handled it in a way that made Supernatural and even my beloved, yet very weird show, SyFy's The Magicians look mature in comparison. Like, the way it handled magic in the TVD universe broke me (what basically amounted to becoming invisible being the flashiest thing you can do with magic became Winx-level "shooting magic beams at each other"). And the way it handled gods in the TVD universe was so frustrating.
First, Ken's armor looked wackier than Thor Love and Thunder. For real. Then the whole "the gods were afraid of Mallivore" thing. Nah, pass. One thing I actually expected them to do (because I had been thinking about it for ages), but they didn't, was to break our expectations and make the gods actually immortal. Now, not every god in every culture is immortal, but many are, and TVD had already nailed in our heads the notion that "nothing completely immortal can exist" for so long that I thought it would be a great subversion. But no.
Anyway, I was thinking about how gods could be handled in the TVD universe and I started writing some ideas and I came up with something, maybe I'll write a fanfic or something. First of all, I would have the story be more spread out. It would focus on many settings. In this case, Mystic Falls with the TVD cast, New Orleans with The Originals cast, and the Salvatore School with the Legacies cast. Most of the canon would follow, but somethings would be different. For instance, Klaus and Elijah are not dead, in their family, only Finn is not among us anymore. From Legacies, I would salvage only the setting and most of the characters, but they would follow completely different paths. The story will jump characters between three main settings, Mystic Falls, New Orleans, and the Salvatore School. Each will live their lives and uncover mysteries separately, which will gradually mix together (think Stranger Things).
>>>>>
So, the story would start in New Orleans. Haley (who is alive), would be investigating something weird that is happening with the werewolf packs of the Southern US. Many are fleeing, others are expanding, and odd alliances are being formed. Among all that, she finds that many packs started following and revering a mysterious leader that most only know as The Lady of the Night, or just The Lady. She finds that those werewolves have somehow developed the ability to stay in human form during the full moon and retain their physical prowess without needing to wear a moonlight ring. In Mystic Falls, a gang of witches have established themselves in the town and started coersing the local witches to join and hunting the local vampires, and the TVD cast has to investigate. All they know is that they are led by a someone refered to as Lightbringer (Sorry, that is the one setting among the three that I haven't thought much about). In Legacies, the cast finds a teenage boy like them that have been chased by werewolves all the way from somewhere in the South. Initially, they think he is Human, but they see the guy kill a few wolves with his bare hands before collapsing. They bring him to the school and find out that, not only is he amnesiac, but he only remembers his life up to a year before, when he was found and put in the foster system and was given a new name by the state, Malek. They don't know what he is and a good portion of his arc would be they trying to find out (he would take Landon's place in the story).
>>>>>
As you may have realized, these new characters are gods. So, I actually like Legacies' idea of not tying the gods to any specific culture (like having the literal Greek gods or many patheons and stuff). Instead they implied that all those cultures' beliefs, or at least a lot of them, were inspired by this one family of real gods.
In my story, this is basically what happened. There is the real gods and then there is the things that people all over the world believed, which often was based on a limited understanding of the real gods or a cultural memory of then mixed in with made-up stuff that developed over time. One example of this is the "Storm God vs Serpent" archetype, which I will talk about later.
Anyway, the gods in this version will be loosely based on our reconstructed understanding of the Proto-Indo-European religion that gave origin to the Greek, Slavic, Celtic, and Norse gods among other in Europe, and the Persian and Vedic gods in Asia. But there will also be tie-ins with Mesoamerica, Africa, Japan, etc.
The main antagonists of the first phase are two individuals known as The Twins. Elio (Lightbringer) and Selina (The Lady). They are actually the twin gods of the Sun and the Moon, who woke up from a centuries-long slumber to wake the rest of their their family.
Selina has the power to bend werewolves to her will, though it is easier for hybrids to resist. Though Selina has nothing to do with werewolves' creation, as they were created by Inadu (The Hollow) in America half a millennium after she was put to sleep, she still has power over them, being the personification of the Moon. That is because Inadu's curse made them "slaves to the moon", which she did not know would tie them to Selina herself. Selina has the power of forcible truning a wolf to torture them when in her presence, as well as preventing them from doing so in the full moon. She uses that as a control mechanism for her followers, torturing them with untimely shifting or rewarding them with the ability to resist shifting during the full moon.
Elio, on the other hand, is being slowly revealed in Mystic Falls, where they first hear of the Twins. Unlike his sister, who has power and influence over werewolves, Elio has no power over vampires. Instead, he is only very dangerous to them. Elio has the power to have vampires feel the effects of being under the sun when in his presence, even if they are wearing a daylight ring. He can make them feel mild discomfort, make their skin blister, or even have them spontaneously combust to death in his presence. His very presence is also all the way from unsetlling to irrationally terrifying to vampires and hybrids. Unlike Selina, who is being literraly worshipped by the werewolves, Elio is pretending to be a very powerful witch and will not be discovered to be the sun god until later.
Finally, we have Malek. Because he is initially not as powerful as The Twins are portrayed to be, we would think he is a demigod or something else. Eventually, it will be revealed that he is actually the archetypical storm god, with powers related to lightning, thurder and the weather, like Thor or Zeus or Indra (but he is not the archetypical Sky Father, which was often mixed with the Storm God in subsequent religions, like with Zeus). He was the first one of the gods to be woken up, but the process was done wrong, and it hurt him, left him weaker.
The gods are a family of supernatural beings with power over nature and abstract concepts, representing many archetypical aspects of more imediately identifiable with the Proto-Indo European religion. They are both magical and the source of magic, and they have been living since at least 10,000 BC. They do not follow the exact canon of a specific religion, but some aspects of their lives may have been remembered as specific stories in many different cultures. Elio and Selina are both Helios and Selene, as well as Apollo and Artemis, Ra and Khonsu, and many other aspects. The family is formed by the Sky Father, the Earth Mother, and all their sons and daughters. These are the greater gods, but there are also a number of minor gods that descend from the core family.
The gods are immortal, as in completely indestructible. Nature's "no immortality" rule doesn't apply to them because they are the ones who created that rule in the first place (which forced any attempt of recreating the gods' immortality with magic always ending in a halfway success at best). It will take time for the main cast to come to terms with this fact and understand that they can't kill the gods, just put them back to sleep. Even in their sleep, the gods were somewhat conscious. They are aware of the changes in the Human world and could whisper in the ears of mortals (thin Silas).
It will be revealed that Malek, being one of the gods that loved Humanity the most, was the one who put his siblings to sleep (his parents, the Sky and the Earth, are more metaphysical and don't interfere much, as they exist in a more immaterial state). The gods were in the brink of war among each other about 2000 years ago, and a war of the gods would be extremely harmful to Humanity. Small skirmishes among them had caused civilization-ending catastrophes before, such as the Bronze Age Collapse, the Middle Eastern Deluge, and an earlier small war had been fought in India millennia before, giving origin of Indian myths of basically "nuclear"-level wars between the gods in the past.
So, to prevent this from happening, Malek enlisted the assistance of Alyta, the Goddess of the Dead, and Fae, the Smith Goddess of Fire, to put his family to sleep. A lot of his character arc will be his conflict between his old family and his new family at the Salvatore School. Elio and Selina want to find him because he is the only one who knows where the other gods are being kept (well, he doesn't for a while, due to his memory loss). Alyta is a mix of Hades, Persephone, Osiris, Thanatos, and other death-related gods. She helped Malek because she knew a war of the gods would be a pain for her. She rules over the Land of the Dead, a realm that encompasses Limbo, The Bright World (Peace), and from which small artificial realms such as Qetsyah's Other Side, Cade's Hell, and the Ancestral Plane were temporarily carved out (alowed by her). Furthermore, she never leaves completely (though she does harvest the souls of the living) and is the only god that was not put to sleep and was active for all thistime.
Now, a lot of the first portion of the story would follow Elio and Selina's machinations and Malek's new life. The Twins want to bring their family back and take back ruleship of the world. For that they want to find Malek, and they (and presumably the other gods still sleeping) are pissed at him. However, there is also disagreement among The Twins. Their family is just as disfunctional as The Originals, and the only thing that used to keep The Twins specifically from jumping at their throats was their little sister, Rory, Goddess of the Dawn. But she is sleeping, and though they made this alliance to release the others, they are gradually losing patience with one another. Other gods that could be mentioned or would appear are a Smith Goddess of Fire (Fae), a God of Beauty and Love (Deon), a God of War (Martino), a Goddess of the Sea (Yara), a God of Time, a Goddess of Agriculture...
Finally, by the last third of the story, the final enemy would be revealed, a being that even the gods fear. The Great Old One. It is the archetypical "serpent" or "monster", a lovecraftian horror and the monstrous firstborn child of the Sky and the Earth. It was defeated by Malek over ten-thousand years ago. However, being of the same nature of the gods and, thus, immortal, Malek could not kill it, only chain it beneath the earth. This battle was felt all over the world and gave origin to many myths. The archetype of the storm god vs the serpent would become the myth of Zeus and Typhon and Apollo and Python in Greece, of Indra and Vritra in India, of Thor in Jormungandr in Scandinavia, and of Susanoo and Yamata-no-Orochi in Japan, for instance. Before their battle, the monster kidnapped the moon (Selina) and tried to eat the sun (Elio), giving origin to myths like Apophis trying to eat Ra in Egypt, or Yamata-no-Orochi kidnapping a princess in Japan. After their first battle, monster tried to rule Mesoamerica, were it ruled as a bloody god that gave origin to the archetype of the Feathered Serpent god and introduced human sacrifice to saciate its hunger for blood. Its defeat was remembered in Mesopotamia as the gods defeating Tiamat, or as the killing of Ymir in Scandinavia.
Bascically, it is a lovecraftian god of chaos of immense power and unsatiable hunger. Malek's battle with it was so traumatic to him, that even in his amnesiac state he displayed a phobia of serpents and snake-like lizards. This being is the one that, after millennia unwatched, managed to free up a part of its essence from its prison and attack Malek in his sleep, which led to him being awoken and severely weakened for a long while. After the other gods realize that it is slowly breaking away from its chains, it becomes a race against time to put it back to its cage, with gods, vampires, witches, and werewolves working together to do so.

2024.05.17 05:54 Visual-Bumblebee-257 Once Upon a Time...

Once upon a time there lived a girl named Gessica McEarls. She came from a family with very little. One day the father left to go to another castle far far away, to live with his new wife. The mother was left all alone to raise her daughter, Gessica. The Mother tried to find work, but because she had a reputation for telling tall tales and loving ale and spirits too much, she was never successful. The King took pity on some in his Kingdom, and despite Gessica's reputation, the King made sure that they had enough food to survive, garments to keep them warm and straw to make beds to lay their heads on.
Many years went by, and the daughter was now married with her own children. Gessica had two daughters. She lived in a one-room moss-covered hut in a small shire hours away from the Castle. This shire was designated by the King to be where those that received his generosity would dwell.
Gessica made meager attempts to find a job. She found herself partaking of the spirits a bit too frequently, just like her mother. Gessica suffered from the same affliction as Pinocchio. The more lies she told, the longer her nose grew. Oh, but she loved to tell tall tales. The taller, the better. The tales were about nothing specific, she simply found lying to be enjoyable. It could be about anything and anyone. One day, a servant walking past Gessica's hut overheard her telling a very horrible tall tale. She had heard the rumors around the Kingdom that Gessica was never to be trusted. The servant knew that Gessica could never tell the truth, even with her nose growing with every lie. The servant went straight to the Kings Regent and told him that Gessica was now spreading lies about the Queen. This enraged the King!
The King asked his son, Prince Charming to visit the home of Gessica McEarls with a message. The next morning the Prince set out on his journey from the Kingdom to the shire. He knew the shire because he was often tasked with bringing a harvest of grain, fruits, vegetables and garments to the destitute. After many hours on horseback, he arrived. He jumped off his horse and headed straight to the hut. His servant tended to his prized horse. He knocked loudly on the door. A child opened the door, dropped her doll that was in her hand and said "Oh it's the Prince, Prince Charming, welcome Your Royal Highness" as she curtsied. Gessica ran to the door, grabbed the Prince by his arm and pulled him inside. The Prince had never been treated this way and was not pleased. He said in a booming voice "Ma'am, let go of my arm AT ONCE!" Gessica let go of his arm and gestured him to a chair next to the table where they ate. The Prince explained that the King had been advised that she was speaking ill of the Queen. He told her that the King was furious and would give her only one chance to redeem herself from destruction and that she was to never lie again. He said that if she did, the punishment would be harsh. Her mouth would be sewn shut, and her fingers bent. Gessica thought and thought while the Prince stared at her, and she finally said "OK, your Royal Highness, I will never tell a lie again!" With that proclamation her nose grew and grew and grew. The Prince stood up, and yelled 'You lied! Now you will come with me! We will have your children tended to while you serve your punishment!"
Prince Charming grabbed Gessica, put her on a horse that was tied to his. Her hands and feet were bound with the King's finest fabric. They made the long journey back to the Kingdom. When they arrived, the Prince immediately took her to the King. Gessica curtsied as best as she could and cried "Your Majesty, I didn't mean to tell a tale! Please forgive me!" The King stood up and looked down on this poor wretched soul. He declared that she was to serve a severe punishment for her lies about his beloved wife, the Queen. The punishment would be to have her mouth sewn shut so she could no longer speak lies and her fingers bent so she could no longer write her tall tales. She will live as a servant in the castle for one year. After the year served, she will be brought back to her hut. The King knew that Gessica was a horrible mother and wife. He punished her further by taking her children and husband away. He granted an upstanding family within the Kingdom the honor of raising her daughters. They would be surrounded by love, nurturing, respect and given the attention that they so deserved. The girls would be taught how to be fair maidens. Gessica's husband was granted an immediate divorce by the King. During that year, he found his confidence and fell in love with a beautiful princess from another Kingdom.
The children lived happily ever after. The husband lived happily ever after. However, Gessica did not.
Gessica never told or wrote a lie again. She lost her children and her husband. No one trusted her. She lived her life all alone.
THE END

2024.05.17 05:32 urbudash WIBTAH for telling my baby daddy’s family our child exists?

I met my baby daddy at the end of 2020 through tinder. We were together from December - May 2021. From then we were very on and off. Whenever we were “on,” it was always for several months at a time (don’t quote me on the actual dates but another time we were on was from SeptembeOctober 2022-March 2023, for example). Multiple times we talked about moving in together and yadda yadda yadda all that couple shit, just for it to never work. In October of 2022, I got my IUD out because it was time and I was going through a “find myself” phase so I opted to go off birth control entirely. He knew this and we had both agreed that we would continue to have sex without a condom. I was into natural cycle planning and would avoid my fertile windows and would even let him know of my whole cycle - I’m a very open book type of person. Well, lo and behold in February (found out in March) of 2023 I got pregnant. I waited a few days to tell him so I could confirm it and he lost his shit. We immediately broke up and he spent the next two weeks on and off texting me about how I’m “ruining his life” and he “won’t be able to live like he does now.” We barely talked during my pregnancy. Once I made an ultrasound appointment for him to come to and he never showed up to it. Fast forward a month after I gave birth I texted him asking him if he wanted to meet his child. He did meet him. It was then that we talked about child support and I told him I was going to file and he said he understood he has a duty to pay.
To my knowledge he has yet to tell ANYONE that he has a son. I attempted to message his parents on Facebook but it’s been almost a year since my first message and they have never opened it (I don’t think they really use Facebook). I really want to give them the option to know my son! I’m not sure if I should show up at his parents doorstep (they have never met me) or if I should mail them a letter. I also know his sister-in-law is very active on Facebook. I have thought about messaging her. Should I do it? How should I do it? Legally we do not have paternity established yet. I am waiting to find out if he requested a DNA test or just signed the papers.
I don’t want to piss him off but I have no grandparents left and I wasn’t my son to have a relationship with all of his family!
Added Info: we were on good terms until the day he got served child support. He lost it on me again over text message and hasn’t responded to anything I’ve messaged (only questions regarding support or our son).

For Morella, tell the Chancellor that you're supportive of changes to the MITZ. For Derdia, say you want Morella and Derdia to come to a compromise regarding the Golcondolists. Last for Pales, announce that your nation's are moving on and forward to reunification.
(Transit system fails report: Fix In turn 6)
[6] Go to the wine opening ceremony. Make a speech about wine, boast about your province, and make sure to tell everyone that they'll be rewarded if they stay loyal to their king. Uncork the wine and drink. Celebrate the release of Romus the Red Wine. Go upstairs and rest in bed with Bruno.

TURN 5 [A: 2 → 9] [B: 2 → 9] [E: 0 → 0]

[1] Wehlen trade deal. Talk to all of your councilors. During negotiations, Say these words for maximum negotiating power:
  1. The pleasure is mutual, Mr. President. Thank you for meeting me.
  2. That's indeed over the top, Mr. President. I'll ensure that my papers refrain from such slander in the future.
  3. You are right. Neither of us want Arcasian greed to spread across Merkorpa.
  4. The violence you mention is the responsibility of a select few individuals. They are being dealt with.
  5. Wehlen is our direct neighbor and our historical ally. We will always prioritize relations with your country over Rumburg.
  6. I agree that closer cultural and economic ties could benefit both nations.
First term to trade deal: Tell me about trade deal, Mr. President
  1. An interesting offer. And the rate is indeed favorable.
  2. You may be right. Access to Oil alongside natural gas would grant us more flexibility, not to mention more options for trade with our neighbors.
  3. As a stakeholder in Rizia’s royal mining company, I have a vested interest in keeping gold production consistent.
  4. I never heard of Wehzek woodcarvings.
Second term to trade deal: Is the bilateral migration agreement what it sounds like?
  1. I can extend those rights to the Wehzeks currently living in Zille. But to every citizen in Wehlen?
  2. Wehlen does have a lot of untapped potential. With the right path of development, it could be restored to the glory days of the 1920s.
Third term to trade deal: I’m interested in hearing more about this anti-terrorism Pact.
  1. They’re a dangerous terror organization whose fight for ‘freedom’ has cost many innocents their lives.
  2. I hope you have concrete evidence to back up that accusation, Mr. President.
  3. Yes, their religious fanaticism makes them even more dangerous.
  4. That's it?
  5. Or what?
  6. I am all for proactivity. If we don't nip terrorism in the bud now, we will pay a steep price later.
  7. I see. A small contribution towards the greater fight against terrorism. (only appears if you have enough ships)
  8. Not everything, what’s this about a three-year timeline?
  9. Do not doubt my kingdom's ability to deliver on its promises.
Enact these trade agreements:
  • Imports: Oil (any more lowers negotiating power)
  • Exports: Wine and Small arms
  • Promise aid against BFF
  • Do not ban Bluds and Deridans
  • Full rights to Wehzeks

Pay for reparations for the Arufelde River (cheaper because of donation made in Turn 2). Build pipeline through Morella. Last, hold talks with Derdia over border disputes. At the end, offer to split MITZ 50-50 for agreeing to all these conditions. Again. Do not take the Biscuits.

2024.05.17 05:22 ArmChairAnalyst86 Why Does r/SolarMax Exist? - An Invitation

Hey everyone, I just could not go without writing something for you all tonight. I am working on the article I have promised you. I plan on working hard on it over the weekend so I can get it out as soon as possible. I am still gathering some data and trying to keep with the demands of life, but its a priority. I know alot of you are curious where I stand on the topic of space weather affecting earth, our magnetic field, the future, and what I see. Be patient with me.
In the mean time. I wrote this for you. It is a personal open letter written to each of you here, and the ones still yet to come. I want to tell you why I am here and why I started this.
I am touched at how space weather has impacted all of you and share your sentiments. When I go at a topic, I go all in. I consume everything I can. I gobble up information and want more. This topic just happens to be an unconquered frontier. I knew next to nothing about space weather 3 years ago. I have always been intellectual and have a broad knowledge of many things. I never expected myself to fall in love with space again. I figured if I was going to do so, it would have happened a long time ago. I certainly missed my window to make a career out of it the conventional way, but passion is blind.
I am not quite sure what it is. The mystery, the power, the uncertain and undefined nature, and most of all the majesty. Friday night was one of the most majestic experiences of my life. It felt like a psychedelic themed world in a video game. It is just the latest in a long list of celestial events that burned a deep impression in my soul. Now, even though I was not trying to find a specialty in space weather, I was always observing. I would like to recall just one experience for you.
The only thing more finicky to predict on our solar system than the sun is the behavior comets. There may be some examples I am not thinking of, but Carl Sagan once said that if you are going to bet on horses or comets, to choose the horses. While there are comets we know which are called periodic because we have calculated and confirmed their orbit, and we know they visit us every so often depending on the comet. Some comets just pass through. Our cometary data base is a tiny fraction of what is out there. So every now and then a big beautiful comet comes out of nowhere and puts on a display for the ages. The so called Great Comet.
I was born in 86' which was the same year as Halleys Comets last visit, which visits us every 75 ish years. As a result, I obviously did not see it. I was confused as a young boy in 1996 or 97 when people began to talk about a new comet that would be making an appearance called Hale Bopp. I have a cousin named Haley, and my dad would call her Hale Bopp comet. Of course all of these comets have numerals, but we will use their common term. My young mind did not know how comets were named, and I was trying to get a read on why they liked using Hale or Haley so much. I had never seen a comet before, but I was told I would.
My dad recognized that there was a passion there. Something about a comet captivated me. The entire idea of it. He built me a small little observatory in our yard with wood and plexiglass. He just used what we had lying around and did not want to use real glass. He did not want to use anything and just leave it open, but me dying to have the whole experience really wanted a see thru panel to observe the comet from. As you probably know, plexiglass is not the most transparent. At all. It is the thought that counts, he was doing his best to accomodate me. He took the cover off at my request and there it was, my first observatory and first event.
I do not remember when exactly Hale Bopp showed up. I do not recall if I saw it at the earliest possible time. Those details are blank in my memory. However, the blank space completely eclipsed by the feeling I got when I saw it for the first time. If you remember Hale Bopp, than you know what I am talking about. She stretched out in the sky like a shimmering windsock blowing in the breeze across the sky. It looked so bright, so peaceful and serene, as if it was the most graceful thing I had ever seen. Bright, blue, and prominent. You could not miss it. I left the experience with the impression that all comets are naked eye visible, especially if they have a name sounding like my cousin Haley. Not only that, but C/1995 O1 Hale Bopp stayed around for months. MOnths and months. 18 to be exact. It was not naked eye visible around the world for this entire window, but to this day holds the record over the next closest contender at 9 months. I remember car trips and leaning up against our Ford Windstar minivan window and just staring at it. It is not fair to say I took it for granted because I looked at it every chance I could get. It was my companion. However, when it was no longer gracing my skies, I missed it greatly and wished I would have observed it more.
I left this entire experience deeply moved. I had also seen an annular eclipse approaching totality, not quite, in 1994 over my home in Ohio. I was sent to school with welding goggles to observe it. Something in the young me was compelled to view these sights and events. Nobody else in our school got to go outside to see it. There were not cheap eclipse glasses on every corner. The teachers let me though, and I could not believe how dark it got. I know it wasnt dark like night, but in my memory it was. I just could not wait until the next comet or eclipse!
Little did I know how rare these events are. Yes, you can travel to see an eclipse just about every year. Comets come and go, but most are not naked eye visible, and if they are, its only under optimal viewing conditions or with viewing aids. As a result, many people have never experienced them. The wonder. The beauty. The Power. The Majesty. I am yet to have seen another naked eye visible comet in my life, although that is because I missed the few and brief opportunies there were. Me being impatient, impulsive, and a fast mover, I was already on to the next. Forgotten and replaced by various this or thats. But the mark was made. It was burned into me, even if forgotten temporarily, it was always there.
It was reignited in 2017 when the US experienced a total solar eclipse. I saw eclipse, nationwide, and got very excited. Little did I know how it actually worked. I was disappointed in the experience after the lofty bar set in my childhood. It was neat, but it did not change my life. However, I began asking myself questions. I found myself wanting to understand. Understand I did. And that brings us to now.
I am here to bring my passion to you. I picked 2024 as the year to follow this dream and follow this path for a reason. I did not know if it would pan out when I started it, but I knew 2 BIG things were happening. I knew it would bring the people the same wonder as it did me, no matter what stage of life, background, or knowledge level. So far, it has been a banner year for celestial sights. I do believe in the power of manifestation as I have proven it to myself many times. I believed that this year would in fact be a banner year. While I would never be so presumptuous to think that the cosmos would ever bend to my will in the slightest bit, I am left to conclude that I am in fact connected to it. That it was calling me then and it is calling me now. I am here to bring this to you. Not knowledge, as I am still seeking it myself. But passion, a place, a community. I do believe the best is yet to come. So far this year I have seen a total solar eclipse from center path totality in my back yard, and not just an eclipse, but a beautiful and powerful prominence waving to me. I have seen the northern lights in my back yard with a phone full of new wall paper. I have met all of you wonderful people. And yet I still can sit here and say the best is yet to come. 2024 has not played its last card, not even close. No less than 2 once in a lifetime events yet remain on the calendar. Those are just the ones we know about. I invite you all personally to take this journey with me into tomorrow, whatever it may bring, with eyes in the skies
With light and love,
AcA

2024.05.17 05:20 AliceStanleyJr "I Hate My Reflection for Years and Years": TTPD & Sylvia Plath’s “The Magic Mirror"

Introduction: The Mysterious Double Album
I’ll always remember 2 AM on April 19th 2024. I was in my pjs, alone, on my balcony, fresh off my first listen to Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poet’s Department. After sufficiently enjoying my solitary experience, I took to the internet to see what the masses were saying…when Swift dropped a whole second album: The Tortured Poets Department Anthology. Swift, a master of both Easter egging surprises for her fandom and practicing the number one rule of business (give the people what they want!), had been hinting at something “double” for months. Most significantly, while accepting her Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, she flashed a “peace sign.” That damn peace sign haunted the fandom for months. Swift’s corporate social media account, u/TaylorNation, used peace sign emojis and called attention to the number two whenever possible (ie teasing the album 22 days out etc.). There were also many “2”s present in in the promotional “experiences” leading up to the album release date—including statues of peace signs at the TTPD interactive experience at The Grove in LA. As usual, some Swifties went bonkers with their theories (or “clowning” as outlandish theorizing is referred to in the community). I myself couldn’t help but believe some concept of doubling would be significant in TTPD, but I couldn’t have guessed a full DOUBLE album (Swift’s capitalization). What an absolute treat. Mother was, as they say, mothering.
…Only the two mania didn’t seem to end post-drop. If anything, the two mania heightened. The albums were not just surprises in themselves, they were full of mystery. They seemed to reference multiple relationships, cryptic narratives, allusions to Swift’s previous songs, allusions to iconic poets, and very often, twins. The sleuthing type of Swiftie (full disclosure, moi) dove in deep. We gathered where we do—on Twitter, on TikTok, on Reddit (my preferred sandlot). And as we obsessed over every lyric, literary allusion, and video clip, Swift, our self-appointed “chairman” seemed to encourage us. Swift added a TTPD set to her Eras tour in Paris. Afterward, she posted a collection of photos to Instagram. The second photo of the post is Swift onstage, in a sparkling showman’s outfit, flashing two fingers.
Initial Tortured Poets and Sylvia Plath Connections
Swift has always been an incredible poet, but that’s not necessarily how the world saw hesees her. Swift is a pop star, specifically, Swift was a young girly pop star, most known for her tabloid romances and dramas, which she would (allegedly) write about in her music. Swift’s work has been labeled as “confessional” since her first album, which included songs she openly said were about boys at her high school. I offer this context (or, lore) to explain why I began seeing connections to TTPD in Sylvia Plath’s “confessional” work.
Of course, the theme of TTPD is tortured poets, so many avid literary Swifties have enjoyed seeking connections between Swift’s new songs and iconic poetry. No connections are overt, but some seem to be more likely than others. Namely, there’s been much discussion of Virginia Woolf thanks to the song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”(perhaps a riff on the Edward Albee play title). Other Swifties have found possible lyrical links to Mary Shelley and Charlotte Bronte. Swift herself references Patti Smith and Dylan Thomas in the album’s title track.
I remembered a third poet in relation to Smith and Thomas: Sylvia Plath, obviously an all timer of a tortured poet. I remember hearing an anecdote that she had been obsessed with Thomas and stalked him outside the Chelsea Hotel (also named in the TTPD title track). I did a quick skim of Plath’s Wikipedia to confirm and then started noticing many possible connections to TTPD and Plath’s life.
In the “Fortnight” music video, Swift acts out being institutionalized for insanity and getting electric shock treatment—two significant experiences in Plath’s life. Plath was also coupled with a deeply problematic man, Ted Hughes. Plath fell in love with Hughes for his artistic talent before he revealed himself to be an unsupportive parter, ultimately cheating on Plath with a younger woman. The narrative is not too dissimilar to the narrative about Swift’s alleged ex Matty Healy, as seemingly told in TTPD. (Of course, we don’t know the true subjects of Swift’s songs—if they’re even actually confessional—but some key hints point to Healy. Whether those hints provide actual context to Swift’s life or to the story Swift is telling of her life, one cannot know.) Finally, several of TTPD songs reference a latent desire for suicide (“I might as well die / it would make no difference” etc.). Okay, post-“finally,” these are stretches, but, I’ll note anyway: one of Plath’s most famous collections of poems is titled Ariel, but an alternate title was Daddy. There are connections to both words in TTPD via the song “But Daddy I Love Him.” The title is a line from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid (which features the main character Ariel, a mermaid, caught between two worlds). Extra clowning: some people (hi, I'm people) believe Swift’s 1989 costume for her first Paris concert was an allusion to Ariel: a pink crop top and a seafoam skirt.
As I dug into Plath's life, I couldn’t help but also see similarities to Swift's life. Both women were prolific writers from a very young age. Also, although possibly obscured through artistic license, both women were/are known to write about their own lives. (Plath was apparently encouraged by her professors Robert Lowell and Anne Sexton to write from her experience. I cannot help but tie in Swift’s “The Manuscript” lyric “the Professor said to write what you know.”) Both Plath and Swift expressed/express their depression via their writing, but if you only knew them from their public personas, you’d never guess the depths of their struggles. It seems both Plath and Swift lived/live double lives. Plath was actually fascinated by the concept of doubles. In fact, the concept of doubling was the topic of Plath’s college thesis paper “The Magic Mirror.”
The Magic Mirror and TTPD
Plath’s college paper is sadly not available to the general public. (It had a limited print run in, you guessed it, 1989.) But! I was able to read a few texts about the thesis, and the amount of possible TTPD references is astounding.
Since we can’t directly analyze Swift’s work via Plath’s directly, I’d like to share several key quotes from the most telling article I could find about the “The Magic Mirror”: “Sylvia Plath’s Magic Mirror” by Kelly Coyne (May 2018, The Los Angeles Review of Books). (To be noted, Coyne has also written about Swift, in her article “Growing Up In Taylor Swift’s America” in December 2023 on Literary Hub—a fabulous read!)
Early in her article, Coyne sets the scene for Plath's thesis:
“Her undergraduate thesis, which she wrote as a senior at Smith College...is titled “The Magic Mirror: A Study of the Double in Two of Dostoevsky’s Novels.” “The Magic Mirror” explores literary doubles made up of a character’s repressed traits, and, as the double grows in power, it heralds the protagonist’s death. Citing Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as well as Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, Plath argued that the choice to create a double works to “reveal hitherto concealed character traits in a radical manner” and simultaneously exposes the driving conflicts of the novel housing that character. Her thesis claims that both Ivan, of The Brothers Karamazov, and Golyadkin, of The Double, have attempted to repress troubling aspects of their personalities, resulting in the double.”
Immediately, I imagine the two versions of Swift from the “Anti-Hero” music video. One Swift is real, true, sensible. The other is a pot-stirring, self-esteem destroying, alcoholic. During Eras, the huge Swift (monster on a hill) screams and stomps around in the background while the real, true Swift smiles and dances in a sparkle dress onstage. The fandom seems to be referring to these two Swifts as Taylor Swift and TAYLOR SWIFT (TM). Folks have theorized Post-Malone in the Fortnight music video is not necessarily a lover, but a twin, or double, of Swift. This theory is enhances by the Eras visuals during that song, specifically two dancers walking away to the back of the stage, but then becoming one.
More Coyne: “Plath, quoting Dostoyevsky in her thesis, noted that Ivan’s double, Smerdyakov, is “wrinkled” and “yellow.” The distinct differences in appearance between originator and double, she continued, are meant to reflect the protagonist’s mental state and cultural status.”
First of all, yellow. In the Gaylor community, folks have often theorized yellow symbolizes being closeted—a reading based on the symbolic coloring in the 1999 film …But I’m a Cheerleader. However, one need not be a Gaylor to consider the importance of yellow to Swift’s storytelling. Most recently, Swift performed “my tears ricochet” at Eras in a bright yellow dress, as her dancers were dressed for a funeral. Following Coyne’s analysis of Plath's analysis of Dostoyevsky, one could guess Swift is teasing a death of some version of herself.
Coyne discusses how Plath clearly used a “double” of herself to write The Bell Jar. Plath herself spent a summer in New York interning for Mademoiselle. The protagonist in TBJ, Esther, spends a summer in New York interning at a magazine too. To go even further down the rabbit hole, Esther also doubles herself, frequently expressing normalcy on the outside and despair on the inside. On the book's first page, Esther tells her audience, “I was supposed to be having the time of my life.” (Again, I cannot help but hear a Swift echo of, “I can read your mind / she’s having the time of her life” from “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” about smiling through her depression.) Coyne makes many more references to mirrors and concealing in The Bell Jar, Ether’s split (and sadness) gets worse and worse the more she hides who she is from others. Notably, at a low point, Esther hides under her mother’s bed. (And Swift sings of a post-heartbreak depression, “Afterwards she only ate kids' cereal / And couldn't sleep unless it was in her mother's bed.”)
Coyne writes about the “imprisoned” aspect of doubles: “The wound from which Esther tries, and fails, to hide chimes with the inescapable, colonizing double, and Plath’s language again illustrates its penal nature: it is inside Esther, but it traps her like a jail cell.” (Again, I cannot help but see references to “Fresh Out the Slammer”, “The Smaller Man Who Ever Lived,” and the TTPD Eras visuals of cages and cell lighting.)
Coyne, on Plath’s doubles’ names, something Swift has not ever used (or so we think): “From her conception of The Bell Jar all the way to its final revisions, Plath suffered an exhausting amount of anxiety over its heroine’s name.” Plath wrote to a friend, “‘I’ll have to publish it under a pseudonym, if I ever get it accepted, because it’s so chock full of real people I’d be sued to death’...Indeed, this wasn’t mere paranoia; she did have to change her protagonist’s name at the instruction of her editor for legal reasons.”
Coyne continues, “Most novelists likely have concerns about being associated with the characters to whom they give life, especially the ugly ones, and especially when the character resembles its author. Yet what is unique about Plath’s case is her knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings and implications of her choice to push Esther away, and the hold this knowledge assumed on Plath’s work and life. Another look at The Bell Jar with a consideration of Esther as Plath’s double tangles the issue even further, and Plath drops clues for this kind of reading throughout the novel. Esther, for example, sits down to write her own novel and recounts, “My heroine would be myself, only in disguise. She would be called Elaine. Elaine. I counted the letters on my fingers. There were six letters in Esther, too. It seemed a lucky thing.” Not coincidentally, Plath’s first name has six letters as well.” Again, Plath was in a bizarre double infinity loop (like the loop on the Eras stage in “Down Bad”?). Plath was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel, who was concealing her double, the protagonist in her novel.
Coyne wraps up her findings: “In her thesis, written nearly a decade earlier, as she turned 22 — the year after her first documented suicide attempt — Plath claimed, quoting Otto Rank:
In such situations, where the Double symbolizes the evil or repressed elements in man’s nature, the apparition of the Double “becomes a persecution by it, the repressed material returns in the form of that which represses.” Man’s instinct to avoid or ignore the unpleasant aspects of his character turns into an active terror when he is faced by his Double, which resurrects those very parts of his personality which he sought to escape. The confrontation of the Double in these instances usually results in a duel which ends in insanity or death for the original hero.”
Coyne seems to argue Plath believed an artist's double has the power to become bigger than the artist herself, ultimately killing her. Is TTPD Swift's predetermination of, hopefully, her her double's death instead of her own?
In Conclusion: Plath to her Mentor, Dessner on Swift
Who knows what TTPD is really truly about, and who knows if we ever will.
The biggest Easter egg, hiding in plain sight, is that the album is titled THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. There’s no apostrophe after “poet.” Nor is there an apostrophe after the “s” in “poets.” The department does not belong to a poet or to a collection of poets. It is a department OF tortured poets, perhaps two, to be exact. …or perhaps the album indicates the departure of the tortured poet...and her double.
I’ll sign off with two final quotes from my research:
According to Coyne, three months before Plath died by suicide, she had written a mentor about her second (obviously unfinished) book. Plath wrote, “It is to be called “Doubletake”, meaning that the second look you take at something reveals a deeper, double meaning […] it is semi-autobiographical about a wife whose husband turns out to be a deserter and philanderer although she had thought he was wonderful & perfect.”
According to Aaron Dessner’s TTPD release Instagram post: ”Keep searching and you'll find some new detail, layer or sliver of meaning with each listen.”
SUBREDDIT PS! Shout out to Expensive_Succotash5 for noting the TTPD intro poem's reference to being out of the oven, could be an allusion to Plath's death. Also shout-out to Good-Amphibian-7993 for this connection to a photo of Plath with a rose, not unlike Swift's album rose art.
