28 [M4F] Canada/Online - Looking to make a lasting connection!

2024.05.20 00:46 Pydras 28 [M4F] Canada/Online - Looking to make a lasting connection!

It's a quiet Sunday for me after a busy week, so what better opportunity to try and make some new connections! A bit about myself to get things going:
* Have my bachelor of commerce, majoring in accounting. So it should be no surprise that I currently work as an accountant. Currently living in interior BC, with hopes that one day I can go to Vancouver.
* History is one of my favourite subject interests. Basically I just want to learn it all, regardless of time period or place. So if you have any good recommendations for well researched and sourced books, please let me know! Another lesser one is geology and paleontology, just really like rocks I guess. Still have my childhood collection.
* Speaking of books, I have loved reading since I was young. Love it so much, I can stay up until 2am getting immersed in my book, which doesn't really help too much with work the next day. Recently I have started to read 30 - 45 minutes before bed to help unwind before I attempt to sleep.
* Gaming is one of my main hobbies to fill my time when the weather isn't nice or I have nothing else to do. Personally I think gaming is best done with friends, so always done to play most things with people. For my solo tastes, I do enjoy RPGs and strategy/simulation type games the most. Basically anything with a good story or that gives me the ability to create ones myself.
* When the weather is nice, and not winter, I love to go hiking and for long walks. Hopefully this upcoming spring and summer will be less smoke filled than last year. Would love to get into photography some day so I can capture all the scenic sights I see. Currently trying to get better at working out consistently, have been pretty good in the past but have fallen through a bit since I've moved.
* Music is a big part of my life, and if my ear isn't taken by something I usually have it playing. I would say my preferred genres tend to be alt and indie rock. That being said, if I enjoy a song I will usually add it to my playlist, and check out the artist and similar songs to see if I can find others I will enjoy. Always love hearing about why a person loves a song, and am more than happy to exchange songs!
* Love to cook and bake, and somewhat decent at it too! Always looking for new recipes to try. Usually I get them down after a few tries, well they are edible at least
* I think I am decently humourous, I am able to make my co-workers and friends laugh quite a bit. Really I just want everyone to have a good time in the end and try my best to make it happen.
* Communication is one of the things I value the most. Would love to find someone who is efficient as well, as I truly believe it is key to growing any sort of relationship.
I can be quite an open book and love talking to people, so if this interests you in all feel free to reach out!

2024.05.19 22:38 SillyGooseAuthor AWTA for not inviting most of my husbandā€™s family to the wedding?

My husband and I were high school sweethearts and got married very young (I was 19), but more on that later.
For now, backstory: we both come from rather toxic families and are both black sheep. The difference being I realized early on and my husband, being very sweet and naĆÆve at times, didnā€™t realize his until I started pointing it out. My intentions were never to alienate his family, however, Iā€™ve never liked the way they treated him. Especially his motherā€™s side.
One of the biggest examples that comes to mind was how he worked over the summer for his Aunt one year before we even met, and instead of giving the money to him, the money was given to his momā€˜s parents who kept it in an account ā€œfor himā€œ that he couldnā€™t access. Later, they bought him a car with it, but put it in their name. When I found out, I immediately pointed out that that was kind of messed up, itā€™s nice that he got a car, but that money shouldā€™ve been given to him and at the very least the car should have been in his name. But as he usually does, he chose to see the bright side of things, so for the most part he was just happy that he had a car. Fast-forward a year or two, and he was driving up most weekends to visit me in college when he wasnā€™t working (about 1 1/2 hours each way, so not very far by Texas standards), when his grandparents decided that they didnā€™t like that and they tried to stop him, but that argument didnā€™t last very long and they relented. It wasnā€™t until they started telling him that he couldnā€™t visit his dad using the car that things really got dicey.
And itā€™s not like his dad lived very far, he lived in the same neighborhood as his mom, and in the same neighborhood that we had grown up in. And this time they would not relent, they absolutely despise his father. The divorce was messy and even though neither is completely blameless, she definitely had the worst offenses. Just trust me on that. Since then, itā€™s like she never learned how to be an adult and has been a perpetual 16-year-old, always complaining about everything and with her parents always holding the purse strings (though you could argue itā€™s always been that way, her parents paid for her schooling to be a dance major and she never did anything with that, they defended her bad decisions during the divorce, paid the mortgage on her large house afterwards, and even now after expressing how much she doesnā€™t enjoy being around her parents, she refuses to leave and still lives with a family member).
Anyways, after his grandparents threatened to take away the car (which he used for work as a pizza delivery man and obviously his mom didnā€™t stand up for him) if he tried to visit his dad, he let his dad know and I helped him move out of his momā€˜s house that night while she was at work. It made him terribly unhappy at first, especially to leave his younger siblings behind, but he knew what they were doing was wrong, and he was over 18 and thats simply a line you donā€™t cross. His dad baught him a car to use.
It should be noted that he likely would not have said anything to his father or moved out if I hadnā€™t pushed him to, and thatā€™s probably why a good portion of his family arenā€™t really big fans of mine. Even several years after we were married and possibly even to this day, they think I make all of the decisions in our relationship and force him to do what makes me happy even if he doesnā€™t want to, which of course is not the case, we discuss and agree on every major decision. When I was pregnant with our son, our first child, we were at his dadā€˜s momā€˜s house and I was often sitting and asking him to get things for me and the like and he ended up going to get food with one of his sisters and she literally told him that she didnā€™t like how I was constantly asking him to do things and I wasnā€™t doing anything for myself. The pregnancy was very hard on me, I LOST 11 lbs and had to work the whole time and had no paid leave, so yes I tried to relax as much as I could. These are just a few examples of their behavior, his mother and her parents are also often emotionally and psychologically manipulative and abusive, comparing him to his cousins which they often consider ā€œmore successfulā€œ especially since he decided he didnā€™t want to be a doctor and wanted to work in a lab instead, and anytime he tries to argue back with his mom she does the whole ā€œI guess Iā€™m just a horrible momā€œ thing. Something I am very well familiar with in my own life. Needless to say, I am not the biggest fan of his family.
I did one year of my university before I decided it wasnā€™t the right path for me and about that time he was about finished with community college and was looking to go to university next. He ended up getting excepted into the university that I had gone to, but didnā€™t really want to move into the dorms as someone who was older than most freshman, but also couldnā€™t afford an apartment on his own. So we decided that we would get married and move up there together, we were already engaged as he proposed to me on my 18th birthday. It was the perfect set up as being under the same roof as my mother again really sucked.
I donā€™t quite remember why we decided to get married three months from that point, it was kind of stressful. But during that time him and his mother had another huge falling out, of course with her parents being on her side, and the deal with the car was still fresh in everyoneā€™s minds. After that I didnā€™t want her at the wedding, or her parents, and while it did upset him a bit(notice a trend? He is very sweet and has a tender heart and is a recovering people-pleaser) he agreed that it would just be unnecessary drama.
It was a very small wedding as my parents gave me $2000 and I used half of that on a weekend honeymoon and the other half to cover the cupcakes and the photographer (who was an old friend of ours from high school). My youth pastor who at this point also knew my (soon to be) husband was the officiant and graciously let us use the foyer the youth building free of charge for the ceremony. This was a small neighborhood church so the room wasnā€™t very big but we werenā€™t inviting a ton of people so we were fine with it, especially since it was mostly windows and it was pretty nice especially since we didnā€™t have to pay for it. We ended up inviting both sets of my parents, my sister and her small family, and my little sister and my momā€˜s parents. (note the parents, siblings, and my closest grandparents) In the end, after his mother begged, we did end up letting her come, and then of course his father came and his siblings and his fatherā€˜s mom. (Note the parents, siblings, and his closest grandparent). Our closest friends were there which was 6 people, and then my small group from church had spent the night decorating the foyer for the ceremony so of course they were invited too. The numbers were slightly skewed in my favor as both of my parents have remarried, my sister was married with 2 kids, and both of my grandparents were still alive at the time. So yes, technicality he had less people there, but he told me that he didnā€™t mind after I pointed this out to him back when we were talking about who to invite. And his family really didnā€™t like this. We both have large families. Only mine was scattered to the four winds and his lived exclusively in Texas. If his momā€˜s parents hadnā€™t been treating him like dirt I happily wouldā€™ve invited them too, and seeing as I didnā€™t even invite my step sisters who had been in my life since I was two, I didnā€™t think it would be appropriate to invite his cousins, especially since the room was plenty full as it was. Again, he understood and was OK with all of this.
In the end, it was very sweet and small and the reception just took place at one of our favorite restaurants.
To this day, he still catches flack for more of his family not being invited, especially is momā€™s parents, and we are always told by third parties about things his family say about us and especially me. (one of them even called me a gold digger, even though at the time was working at Dominoā€™s. His mom told us she was the only one who ā€œstood up for meā€ in that moment, but the best response she could come up with was ā€œmy son doesnā€™t have moneyā€œ).
I have no qualms about what we did. We have since moved halfway across the country, recently celebrated our 8 year anniversary, and are very happy. The things they say still weigh on us though, so I was hoping to prove a point with this post.
So, are we the assholes for not inviting most of my husbandā€™s family to the wedding?

2024.05.19 19:35 MoneyMovesTaj AITA for telling my boyfriend he needs to do something about his child waking up at 530/6am and waking the whole house up?

My boyfriend 32 male, has a son 10 male.. we get him on the weekends and will probably have him all summer. Heā€™s a great kid. Fun. Loving. And kind. Literally a sweetheart! I 37 female truly love him from the bottom of my heart. I go all out for him the same as I do for my own children. My children say I treat him better than I treat them. Which I do not agree. I try very hard to be as equal as possible to each of them. His dad however says I think everything he does is wrong and that his son is uncomfortable here. Even tho heā€™s excited to come every weekend! Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s because I remind him to turn off the lights heā€™s not usingā€¦ or keep his legos upstairs bc my puppy chokes on them.. heā€™s a child and he really does clean up behind himself however heā€™s only ten and misses some legos which suck to step on or my puppy findsā€¦ he plays with them on a blanket for easy clean up but still you get the normal few still laying around. His mother allows him to only eat pizza, hotdogs, and lunchables.. so when heā€™s here he doesnā€™t eat vegetables or regular cooked meals. I cook, and I cook very well (not to toot my own horn) and he does not eat none of it. His dad instead says he can be done and gives him snacks later. Which has never been an option for my children.,, which is part of the reason they say I like him moreā€¦ Ive tried to address this with his father and to no avail. Nothing changes. And his dad always gets super angry about it. He is also an early bird. Which is fine with me it becomes an issue when the entire house is woke up at 6am on the weekends and sometimes even earlier than that. Today he started calling my phone and his dads phone at 6am, I told his dad he HAS to do something about it. Itā€™s my one day off this week and I wanted to enjoy the quiet morning without having to get up and start catering to everyone. He says thereā€™s nothing he can do about it, I rebutled with you can tell him to stay in bed until at least 8/830. I find it so inconsiderate that he wakes the whole house up like this. AITA?

2024.05.19 19:06 saintgeorgette Revenge Never Smelled So Sweet

I apologize, the reason this is so long is because 1.) I suck at summarizing 2.) backstory of some sort is needed to understand this excuse of a man and/or human being. 3.) Iā€™m not a good storyteller, but you are, Charlotte, and I know you can take this mess of info and turn it into a beautiful, long-time-coming, petty revenge story for your channel. Because what is more petty than an herbal, flowery Trojan horse no one knows about?
Cast: OP-me Swister- my older sister Mom - mine and my sisterā€™s mom, grandmother to Trish/Patty BIL- exactly who it says, and a huge butthole. Patty/Trish - the same person, a four year old little girl, product of union between BIL and Swister.
Some (bit rambling to explain some stuff) backstory:
Last winter, to get out of the horrible, freezing, painfully striking sleet (it would not pass over our town, was just there, stuck in a vortex, for what seemed like eternity) of January in our hometown (we were always just a couple degrees away from it being snow, and quite a few times we got lots of hail, some as big as softballs, and could damage cars and punch through windshields, etc. I know this sounds like ā€˜The Long Winterā€™ by Laura Ingalls Wilder, but both me and my mom (Iā€™m disabled and have to live with someone to help in every day life, Iā€™m not a high school dropout living in mommyā€™s basement playing fortnight or assassinā€™s creed and have memorized cheat codes. The only video games Iā€™ve ever played were duck hunt, which my grandpa actually got for himself bc he loved to hunt, so I only got to play it in turns with my five other cousins when we visited him); and N64ā€™s Zelda:Ocarina of Time. I hope those titles illustrate for you the last time I played a video game. Oh! And the Oregon Trail, but I always died of some disease that doesnā€™t happen today or is curable with fluids, rest, and maybe some penicillin. But I digress.) but both me and my mom and my older sister (who was pregnant at the time) and BIL moved about 15 minutes down a little used two lane highway. And when my niece was born late 2019, we named her Patricia after my grandmother. (Patty or Trish for short).
My BIL claims he can smell everything ten times better than any other human, ā€˜probably because Iā€™m an Alpha Male, and I need heightened senses to protect my pack, my family.ā€™ Okay, I wonā€™t deny he is sensitive to scent, but if his food doesnā€™t come out smelling right (almost always made special order bc of his ā€˜allergiesā€™ (thatā€™s what he tells the waitress; in reality, he just doesnā€™t want stuff he doesnā€™t like on his plate, and is too fucking lazy to just take the single pickle chip off the McDonaldā€™s cheeseburger. If half of America can do it, why not him? ā€˜I might smell and taste it with my superhuman olfactory senses.ā€™ He said with a very sincere, serious tone and face, like I was in special education and couldnā€™t understand it was 1,2,3, not 1,3,2. He is an arrogant misogynistic asshole. My sister could have done sooooooo much better. Idk y she chose him to marry (for a general idea of all what he looks like, speaks like, and sounds like (minus the slight lisp) is the video of the ā€˜dating coachā€™ who took the video in his car, opening it with ā€˜you do not have to accept her rejection, say things like Iā€™m the best, why wouldnā€™t you want me, you should see my basement with ropes and pulleys and hooks, and do you know what a did with her that night? Well, itā€™s not appropriate to talk about on this platformā€ā€¦ yeah, that guy, except for the lisp, could be my BIL IDENTICAL twin. Anyway, now you know BIL is a creepy, asshole, bastard with no sense of boundaries or personal space, who think women are lesser than him. Moving on.
I also suffer from anxiety, insomnia, and a few other things that require me to take meds that can slow down your breathing, so if I can take care of my pain, anxiety, and insomnia without having to take a narcotic or benzo, and it works, I choose that path first. Some of these ways are ice packs, heating pads, a special herbal tea, aromatherapy, yoga, sleeping surrounded by pillows like I were in a nest, making sure to do a little bit of some exercise and always taking my daily walks (I donā€™t want the pain to get so bad from being sedentary I will require a wheelchair before I absolutely have to) and donā€™t always want to be popping clonapen or oxy or morphine all day and falling asleep, especially around my niece. I donā€™t want her to ever believe pills fix problems.
So to escape the horrible winter in our new home environment, my mom decided to use her saved-up reward points and book us all a ten day trip to Disney Aulani Hawaii, specifically Disney bc of my niece. My mom and I had been there before, in 2020, right when resorts opened back up at much less than capacity because of COVID rules, and we had gone for a week, so I knew they had an awesome spa I could spend my saved vacation money on.
The minute we step into our two bedroom, two full bath (each with both a shower and separate tubs!), an ok sized but capable kitchen, and a nice, big, comfy furniture filled common room/living room. All of my stuff I put in the room Iā€™d be sharing with my mom, then took my niece to go and get her first Shirley Temple (they are a virgin cocktail I have loved as a kid, still do, that are super easy to make the ghetto way - diet 7up (diet taste better in the cocktail, idk why, it just the way the Gods have decreed it so), grenadine, and maraschino cherries (as many as you want, but kids usually get two and adults one. I think this is unfair) and tada! You have a Shirley Temple.
So Iā€™m walking back to the room, both of us holding our reusable drink cups for our stay (if you bring the cup with you, you get any non alcoholic drink for free during your stay. Coolcool.) And I open the door and hear my mom and sister begging BIL to just stop it, let it go, just enjoy the ten days here. BIL is in MY room, going through MY things, yelling at mom and sis to leave him alone, he has to find it, it reeks, etc. Iā€™m like, GTFO of my stuff, this is extremely violating, sister, are you not concerned and pissed he is pawing through my bra and panties right now, ā€˜looking for hidden pocketsā€™?
Finally, he grabs this 15 or 20 mL vial I have, a pain relieving roll on I use for my migraines and tension headaches, about $55 after tax, not including S&H. I had left my almost empty one at home, and this was a brand new vial, safety wrapping still on. He blames me, said I was trying to ruin ā€˜his hard earned vacationā€™ (he has no job, only looks after my niece enough to feed her (most of the time) and my sister had to find a high -enough paying job so she could work from home so she could do every job like she were a single mother. The only chore he does, and only like 65% of the time (they love to eat out and/or order in) is cooking, and as much as I hate him, sometimes his dishes are good. Not phenomenal, like he practically requires everyone to praise it as, even if he just added sage basil and oregano to a frozen pizza.
So I ask, ā€œhow the hell can you smell that? There is the outer plastic seal and the inner lid seal?ā€ And he goes off on being an Alpha Males and olfactory nonsense. Then he takes the vial and runs out of the room with it. He takes it to a housekeeping services cart several doors down and spikes I into her trash can, which by the thunk sound the vial made told me not only was her trash nearly or almost nearly empty, and that he had broken and wasted a valuable medical tool because he is batshit crazy and doesnā€™t see me as a person outside of how I interact with his everyday life, like Iā€™m a NPC who doesnā€™t exist or say anything until a real person player comes into my field of awareness. He pawed through every item I owned, including underwear and opening my tampons one to sniff (I especially bought no scented for this trip, and he went and ruined a whole box of them (Iā€™m not putting a previously opened and practically stuck up my BILā€™s nose tampons! Itā€™s not just unsanitary, itā€™s gross on so many levels! I also save up what little money I have leftover from my SSDI monthly checks, so over several months, I had saved up to buy that, bc it worked where others just smelled good but didnā€™t take the tension headache or migraine away. He has never had to pay for things with his own money, so has no concept of it, of saving money, of worth.
I stewed and stewed and I knew I had to be as petty as possible and still not get caught. I was still thinking these thoughts on our third to last day while I got an unusual massage at the Aulani spa. First is usual deep tissue massage, but then they rub your back and skin with tingly oils and take what looks like the contents of a bag of tea (very heady and fragrant in that small room) and rub it all over you, wrap you up for 15 min, scrape it off you, also taking excess body oil and dead skin cells with it as it goes. And then, smelling all those wonderful scents, I had a genius thought. As she scraped the herbs and stuff off my skin into a bowl, I asked for a to go bag for the herbs, and pretended I wanted to put them in a foot bath I was giving myself tonight in my room. Shockingly, they agreed, and gave me all the scrapings, herbs, essential &body oils, and dead skin cells, in a linen drawstring bag they said I could just toss the whole bag into the hot water.
Now, when I travel, I always pack duct tape in my checked baggage. To make sure shampoo, conditioner, lotion, stuff like that, wet and messy? So it will stay in the bottle with the top duct taped both on shut and to the top of the bottle. Nobody was in the room; they were taking a hike my physical disabilities made very challenging (like an 7-8/10 for me, and a 3.4.5/10 for them) over broken terrain and off trail a bit to climb to a waterfall, so I had said ā€˜Iā€™m going to the spa. Peace!ā€™ So nobody was back from the hike yet, but I had no idea when they would be, so I acted fast. I grabbed my duct tape and went into sister and BILā€™s room and squished and squiggled my way as far under the bed as I could, an duct taped the linen bag of herbs and scrapings right under where he would lay his head to rest at night (according to his ā€˜Alpha Wolfā€™ status, he was always on the side of the bed between the door and the rest of his collectables in his room.
We had that day, two more days, and three nights left. BIL did not sleep a wink during that entire time - he had housekeeping change the bedding (including duvets and their covers) several times in that small frame of time, and demanded of my mom to rent him (on my moms dime, not this 40 y o mans money, the mooching leach, but her carefully budgeted money and visa card points hoarded over years.) his own, just perfectly sanitized room, obviously something had been left here by a former guest that was rotting. Finally, FINALLY my mom and sister had HAD IT. He whined and moaned more than my four yo niece. They finally ripped him a new one, saying he had been acting like an entitled baby man with delusions he is more important than he is, that we as women should fawn over him, and that he had already ruined all of ours, but especially my vacation by tossing my personal property and screaming at me for wearing perfume when I didn't even pack any. At one point I even piped up, ā€˜I didnā€™t put up with my father treating me like this, what makes you think Iā€™m gonna take it from you?ā€™ (AN/OP: my father abused me and mom and sister our whole lives. Lots of verbal, emotional, psychological abuse. Sister had it pretty literally; mom had it worst. But when my dad had 100% custody of me at beginning of divorce, my sister went away to college and moved out within the following two weeks, and I was his sole remaining target. For three years straight. Other, even more horrible disgusting things he did to me Iā€™ve only just started to talk about, and donā€™t want my whole life blasted online while I deal.
So i got my silent, sweet-smelling revenge. For those 3 days and 3 nights, he didn't sleep a wink, which meant he couldn't keep his 'good guy' image up, and everyone saw how he treats me, and I'm no longer a liaexaggerating. I hope some act of God, or him driving around while completely wasted, as he does every single freaking day. He a waste of space, a waste of oxygen.
Again, the reason this is so long is because 1.) I suck at summarizing 2.) backstory of some sort was needed 3.) Iā€™m not a good storyteller, but you are, Charlotte, and I know you can take this mess of info and turn it into a beautiful, long-time-coming, petty revenge story for your channel. Because what is more petty than an herbal, flowery Trojan horse type thing?
PS: he never did repay me for the OVER $300 worth of MY STUFF he upped and just tossed, or first broke then tossed, because it either offended his nose or him, personally, even though he begrudgingly promised to do so, and my sister promised he would. I only had like a 10% belief he would, but he has no money of his own, how was he gonna do that? Yes, I admit, I keep a record of anything I hear about him doing something negative, so one day if my sister even starts to consider divorce, I can whip out journal/notebook and show her his patterns, and he has always been this way, and he wonā€™t ever change.

i went to CPK the other day and asked my server why some pizzas can be certified GF and some canā€™t. mainly bc the pizza i wanted didnā€™t have the icon next to it. he asked the kitchen and they said there wasnā€™t really a reason. any of the pizzas could be put in the separate tray in the oven. ate my pizza and felt great after. soooo why wouldnā€™t the menu say this?

2024.05.19 12:57 Logical_Act_6927 My boyfriend makes me paranoid and I donā€™t know what to do

TLDR: My boyfriend is amazing, but has depression which makes him constantly upset and irritated with me, making me extremely paranoid and on edge with everything I say because iā€™m scared heā€™ll get upset. He keeps saying heā€™d change, but goes back to how he was, but he is now seemingly making more of an effort to change by changing his medication and going to therapy. I still feel very paranoid and anxious with him even though he is doing better, but iā€™m worried that in the process of him getting fully better, heā€™ll go back to how he was, and I donā€™t know how much more of it I can take. He is an amazing man and I love him so much, but Iā€™m worried I will always feel on edge when Iā€™m with him. Any advice?
Hi! A little backstory, my boyfriend (19M) suffers from depression, and has always taken medication for it since he was younger. Right before we met, he had taken a gap year to focus on his mental health, and got to a point where he went off his medication because he didnā€™t like how it made him feel (zombie-like). We first met (we technically already knew each other but thatā€™s besides the point)around 4-5 months before he wouldā€™ve started college again, and got together around 2 months into being friends. As school came around, he became really scared that he would have to take another gap semesteyear, because even though getting off his medication helped to an extent, he was still struggling with dealing with his mental health. At the same time, he was worried about getting on medication because he told me that he experiences and adjustment period for the first 6 weeks that causes him to become irritable and agitated very easily and have increased suicidal ideation, but even after the adjustment period, irritability would still be a side effect that he had to deal with and manage.
Eventually, when school started, his mental health did become worse, so he decided to get on medication again, and he did go through an adjustment period. It was a struggle- it was hard seeing him very sad and depressed all the time, and I always tried to help him as best as I could- offering to help him get ready in the morning/drive him to school if he couldnā€™t get out of bed, helping him with assignments, etc.
At the same time, he definitely became constantly agitated with me. If I didnā€™t hear him say something and asked him to repeat it (although this was also an issue before he started the medication, but i feel like it got more pronounced), he would basically get very clearly annoyed and quiet, barely talking to me or shutting me down with one word responses. If i didnā€™t text him for a couple of hours (i have adhd and will sometimes forget to text, which i know is reasonable to be upset about, but he would also do the same thing when playing games with friends), or talked just a bit too much (another adhd symptom, which again i understand can get annoying because i can sometimes go on for VERY long), or if i forget something (an item, memory, or something he told me before), or if we have a recurring joke but for some reason just didnā€™t like it that day, or if i called him on the phone unprompted (which he does to me too, so i didnā€™t know that was something i couldnā€™t do) or if i just say any normal thing but for some reason he just didnā€™t like it that day, i would be met with irritation, passive aggressiveness, and the silent treatment. I wouldā€™ve been slightly more okay with it if it was just a few minutes and then he was back to normal, but he would continue like this for HOURS. If we started talking in the evening, and i said something that slightly annoyed him, it was basically a guarantee that he would be essentially silent for the rest of the night. Not only that, but this happened almost every single day.
Iā€™d like to note that he never expressed his irritation in an angry way, or yelled/said harmful things about me/did anything physical, he would just become very quiet, and anything he did say was very clearly in an irritated voice, as well as passive aggressive remarks.
Eventually, I talked about this with him. When i did, i basically completely forgot that his medication was a reason for a lot of what was happening, so when i talked to him about it, I didnā€™t mention medication at all. He told me that his medication caused a lot of his agitation and at first accused me of not believing that his medication caused side effects/not taking them seriously, but eventually apologized and said that it wasnā€™t an excuse and that heā€™d do better, but also said that sometimes i misinterpreted him as upset when he really wasnā€™t (which tbh i donā€™t believe, because sometimes if i pointed something out that he did, heā€™d say he wasnā€™t upset or annoyed at all, but a day or two later, tell me he was irritated with me).
He did do better for a bit, but after around a month it basically went to the same way it was before. This went on for a few months, I continued to have conversations with him, he continued to tell me heā€™d do better, and he would be a bit until he wasnā€™t. To be fair, after the 6 week adjustment period was over, he still was not doing well at all for about another month, and so he increased his medication dose, which made him have another adjustment period, and he did tell me that his biggest concern was how heā€™d treat me during that time, so I decided to keep being patient until he got his medication under control.
Fast forward a couple of months, and I was seeing improvements- until about 2 months ago. We saw each other a lot more often; before this time, weā€™d usually see each other 1-2 times a week and weā€™d have some sleepovers, but in those two months, iā€™d stay over at his house for 3-5 days a week. During this time, his irritation got way worse. He definitely valued his independence, but would continuously ask me to stay over, it wasnā€™t like I urged him to let me stay over. Here are some examples of things that happened:
  1. before i came over, he told me how he didnā€™t want to think about making food because he was stressed over schoolwork. I asked him if I could make him something, he told me yes, so I made pizza while he showered. Iā€™ve made pizza several times before, he made it once with me(also, iā€™ve cooked for years while he only started occasionally baking things when we got together since i liked to cook/bake), and when he came down, he saw the pizza dough was slightly stickier than it looked when he made it with me. He got annoyed and kept asking what I did wrong, and that from now on, i should only cook when he was with me to make sure I donā€™t mess it up, and then basically became extremely quiet for the next 15-30 minutes. I think he realized he sounded super weird saying this, and tried to turn it into a joke after those 30 minuted, but it made me feel really bad in the moment becsude I only wanted to do something nice for him. By the way, the pizza turned out great- my friend came over to eat with us and told us it was one of the best pizzas sheā€™s ever had.
  2. These next few are connected: The next day, he was at school, and I happened to not have school that day so I stayed at his house while he was there to rest because I had a really bad headache. Again, the past few days he told me how stressed he was about school, so I wanted to surprise him. I cleaned his room, made pizza sauce for pizza since we had extra dough (he really likes the pizza), and made him cookies because he told me he was craving them a few days before. He took an uber to school (he couldnā€™t drive yet at this point), and so I also offered to pick him up.
* The first thing that happened was he has a mildly confusing alarm system I had to disable before going outside to get to the car. If i didnā€™t do the steps correctly, the alarm would sound. Basically, I had to disable the alarm, go through the garage door and close it fully, press the button to open the garage, go back inside and press another button tot turn the alarm back on, and go out the garage door while itā€™s beeping and fully close the door again to stop the beeping. He told me these directions and I followed them, and the beeping continue to happen even after I closed the door. i texted him that I was walking out the garage but there was still beeping, he told me it was okay, but then the alarm went off. I think he thought that I didnā€™t close the garage door yet, which is why he thought it was okay? But apparently I didnā€™t wait for him to fully give him instructions (which I was genuinely confused about bc even looking back at the texts now he did), and he got extremely frustrated with me, telling me that because I didnā€™t properly follow directions, it was now going to call his parents. He kept saying that it was whatever, and that heā€™d just take an uber, but I apologized profusely and kept telling him that Iā€™d do it right. He texted his mom, and apparently he told me to press the wrong button, and that i need to press a different one instead after going back in through the garage door. In the moment, he kept saying that the other button was still right and always works for him, but later he admitted that he was probably wrong about it. * The second thing that happened isnā€™t really a big deal, but iā€™ll still include it. My boyfriend also has anxiety, and is a very big backseat driver. However, backseat driving makes me extremely paranoid and be a worse driver, so itā€™s just a never ending cycle. I would be following the directions on the GPS, and he would keep telling me the directions as if I canā€™t see them myself. For example, if iā€™m about to turn right, heā€™d would keep repeating ā€œturn right over hereā€ a bunch of times, each one more with more urgency, as if it isnā€™t what I was already doing. He will pick apart everything I do, and tell me not to talk too much or turn the music up too loud because it would distract me. Again, to be fair, because of my ADHD, I do get distracted easily, even on the road, but itā€™s usually pretty manageable, and Iā€™m able to talk on the phone/listen to music when driving when Iā€™m by myself. The problem is with him, I get paranoid over what iā€™m doing, so I get distracted, and I guess that makes it seem like the music/talking is whatā€™s distracting me. Again, when he backseat drives, he also gets extremely agitated/quiet, and he basically continued on like that for the next few hours. * Lastly, when we got home, he was irritated over everything I did. I did leave a bit later than I told him I would because of the things I was preparing (i think i left at 3:15 instead of 3), but I told him beforehand, and he told me to take my time and come anytime I wanted to since I was going out of my way to drive him(be told me this right when I offered to drive him and after I told him iā€™d be a bit late). When we got home, I told him about what i made and that I cleaned his room, but he got upset because I made the pizza sauce/cookies because he wanted us to do it together. I told him that I wouldā€™ve loved to make them together, but just wanted to surprise him because he told me he had a lot of work to do and told me he was craving cookies earlier. He said that he didnā€™t have as much work anymore, and told me that he thought I knew that because he told me the assignments he need to do (i did know that most of the deadlines were for that day and the day before, but he told me he had some deadlines for a few days after and had told me his whole week was busy, but I guess to him I shouldā€™ve know that most of his pressing work wouldā€™ve been done that day). He was upset with me again for another few hours, and I tried to tell him there were things we could still do together like assemble the pizza, make something the next day, etc, but he wasnā€™t having it. Eventually a few hours later he got over it and told me he appreciated that I made him those things, and he was disappointed that we couldnā€™t do it together, and then mentioned that he was grateful that I cleaned up for him (he didnā€™t mention it before).
Several other things happened, but I think thatā€™s enough to somewhat get the picture. The biggest thing that happened though was just a couple of weeks ago. We hadnā€™t seen each other in maybe 2-3 weeks, and so I was really excited to get to see him. He had an exam that day, so I offered to drive him, and he again said that he didnā€™t want to worry about making food. The day before he told me he was craving pizza, so yet again I said iā€™d make it before i came over (starting to think pizza and me driving is cursed). I asked him before if it was okay that I made him pizza, and he said yes, and so we agreed that I would get to his house around 2 (it was maybe 10 am at the time). I bought supplies and started making the pizza. after a while though, I guess he changed his mind about me making the pizza because it took a while. Around 1, I could tell he was getting annoyed. He kept saying that the pizza wasnā€™t important enough bc i couldā€™ve been at his house already. I finished making the pizza and got to his house pretty early, maybe 5-10 minutes before 2. After that, I was still waiting in the car for another 30 minutes because he was still getting ready, and he got to my car around 2:30. He was still very upset and annoyed with me and gave me the silent treatment. I tried to keep the mood light, but again, he just didnā€™t say anything. When we were driving, I asked him if he wanted to play music, and what song I should play, but justā€¦ complete silence, not even a nod or head shake or anything. For the entire ride he was just on his phone, texting a few friends, and I started to silently cry because I felt so unappreciated. When we got to his campus, he went to a reserved room, but I had to stay in the car because i have a tutoring job thatā€™s online, and had a session at the same time we parked. The person I was supposed to tutor wasnā€™t there for the session, which was lucky for me because right when my boyfriend left, I started sobbing. When I got out of the car I was still crying as I was walking across the street, and decided to call my friend to take my mind off of everything. Her girlfriend also went to the same college as my boyfriend, and I didnā€™t know exactly where I was supposed to go, so I called her to help me find where I needed to go. Since we were calling, I didnā€™t see some texts my boyfriend sent me, but I finally found the room. I was a bit cheered up from my friend but still sad, but wanted to act happy and normal in case he was just randomly in a bad mood and just needed a distraction. When I came in, I was happy to see him and made some jokes, but all he said was ā€œwhy didnā€™t you text meā€ in the most monotone, upset voice. I told him that I was sorry and forgot, would do better next time, and was going to explain that I was on the phone so i didnā€™t see his texts, but he interrupted me and said something like ā€œi donā€™t care about you telling me youā€™re going to do better, just actually do itā€ in the meanest, irritated tone. It doesnā€™t seem like a big deal at all, but he has never retorted at me like that before, especially in the way he did. That was my final straw, and I just completely broke down and started crying. He kept asking me to talk to him and tell me what I was thinking, which only made it worse because it was pretty clear as to why I was crying. He comforted me, apologized, and then had to leave for his exam. For the next 4 hours he was in his exam, I was just crying nonstop. When he came back, I was still crying, and he kept apologizing and asked if I was going to break up with him. I told him I wasnā€™t, and then told him that this happened so often and I felt like no matter what I did, there was something I was doing wrong, and that I felt unloveable. He again apologized a lot and told me he loved me, and later told me that he really wanted to change his medication and get therapy.
A few days later, a similar thing happened, but not to that extent. My boyfriend just got his license and offered to pick me up from one of my exams. I told him I wasnā€™t sure how long the exam would be, and didnā€™t want to let him know yet because it couldā€™ve taken very long. I was right- it was supposed to be from 12-3, but I ended up starting later end ending around 6:30. I texted him after I finished, but he told me he wished I wouldā€™ve let him know earlier because he wasnā€™t comfortable driving in the dark yet, which is reasonable. He became very quiet and upset again though, and again, anytime I made conversation, he would shut it down and be really upset. I also told him that I had to move out of my dorm, and so he didnā€™t have to come if he didnā€™t want to because it wouldā€™ve been a lot of things to haul out. He said that it was okay and that he wanted to see me, and so he came over. When he did, he got upset again because we fooled around for an hour or two instead packing everything up (which he initiated), and then as we started pskcking, he became mean and frustrated again. He kept saying that he just didnā€™t expect to be moving me out, and that he just wanted to pick me up and go home, even though so told him before that thatā€™s what was going to happen. After everything was packed up and we were in the car, he was still silent and upset but a bit less so. I felt really bad and became quiet, and he told me and i quote: ā€œiā€™m feeling really anxious to drive this car at night, so can you just act normalā€, which felt weird for him to say because I was only acting like that because of he as acting mean. I wanted to get home though because it was pretty late, so I just played some music and acted like my normal self, and that made me feel a bit better. When we got home, he apologized again, and thanked me for being patient with him, and that heā€™d be getting help soon.
After that, he did become a lot nicer to me. There were things Iā€™ve said which I was sure he was going to get upset over, but he just didnā€™t at all. Usually, even after heā€™d apologize other times, he would still get a bit upset with me, but itā€™d only last a few minutes before he became normal again. This time, he wasnā€™t upset at all even for the things heā€™d most commonly get upset about (like me not hearing what he said for example). Hes been this way for around 2 weeks, and had not been getting upset at all, and he said heā€™s getting therapy soon.
The problem now is, especially because of the last two incidents, I still feel extremely anxious and paranoid when Iā€™m with him. I am constantly on edge because Iā€™m worried Iā€™ll say the wrong thing when Iā€™m with him, and itā€™ll be just like how it has been for the past almost one year.
Looking back at what i just wrote, these instances donā€™t really seem like that big of a deal, especially compared to how some other people are treated on this subreddit. I think what makes me upset is just how often it happens and how it completely messes up our entire day because heā€™s just upset the entire time. In the past 3-4 months, I donā€™t think weā€™ve ever had a call/hangout where he upset for at least 1-2 hours. I think another thing that really hurts me is that he just acts completely different around me vs anyone else. A lot of the times when I call him, he will get so upset and annoyed so quickly for menial things. He plays games for hours a day, so sometimes when weā€™re facetime and he wants to play with some friends, heā€™ll set his camera up so I can watch him play while i do other things, kind of like a youtube video. Whenever weā€™re on call and heā€™s upset, and then tells me he wants to play and sets his camera up, his mood instantly changes. His face literally brightens up, and he seems so much happier and talkative. I will sometimes hear his friends on the other end, and they will say/do the exact same things that he gets annoyed at me with, and it just is not a big deal at all, he doesnā€™t even seem to notice that it happened. Same with my friends- One day, we were planning a trip to the beach, and were supposed to leave around 12 PM. When he came home, he became upset and quiet with me again, and I kept asking him what was wrong and if weā€™re still going on our trip, but he just ignored me. Finally, at around 6 PM, he was normal again, and then took another hour and a half to get ready, so we ended up leaving at 7:30 PM. My friend was texting me at the same time, so I told my boyfriend to talk to her while I was driving. As we were driving (we were around 15 minutes away at this point), I realized I forgot my license. I asked him if I should turn around, he kept telling me he wasnā€™t sure, and he was just very upset and annoyed with me, even though judt before we left a whole 7 hours later because he was upset. We drove for an hour before he decided that I should drive back, and I kept apologizing for forgetting my license, and that we could try again tomorrow morning. His mom told us we could go to dinner or something to make up for the day, and I asked him if he wanted to do that, and he just said ā€œwhy would we do that what would we even eatā€ in a harsh tone. Again, I tried to keep it light, telling him that I was sorry and we could start fresh tomorrow, and he said that he didnā€™t want to go to the beach anymore in an upset tone. Again, for half of the night after we came home, he was upset and irritated with me. Later that night, I looked back at. the texts between my friend and boyfriend, and I was in shock with just how different he was acting with me in real life vs how he was acting with her. As he was upset with me, he was texting her with updates, making jokes, and basically just making it seem like it wasnā€™t a big deal at all that I didnā€™t have my license. In real life, he acted like I was so stupid for forgetting it, and that it was the worst thing I couldā€™ve possibly done.
I feel like most people who read this might just think he values his independence, and that aim too clingy. I too thought that maybe I just wasnā€™t giving him his space, especially because Iā€™m his first girlfriend. I will not offer to call/come over as much just to see if Iā€™m the one asking too often and he feels too bad to say no, but when I donā€™t, he will keep asking me to call him and come over, and ask why I havenā€™t been talking to him as much/initiates calls or hangouts. Heā€™ll tell me to call more often and hang out with him more often as well. If we hang out, Iā€™ll tell him that Iā€™ll go home for the night and donā€™t plan on sleeping over, and heā€™ll keep asking me if I could sleep over or when I could sleep over, and continue to make plans.
Despite what Iā€™ve said, my boyfriend is genuinely the most amazing guy anyone could ever meet. Heā€™s sweet, kind, and thoughtful with genuinely everyone- his parents, my friends, his friends, his professors, everyone. He is an amazing tipper, he goes out of his way to do things for my friends, and anytime i mention the slightest thing heā€™ll go out of his way to do it for me. For example, in the first month we met, he noticed my backpack and headphones were completely broken, so he bought me a new ones without me saying absolutely anything to him. When I drove him places, he saw that it was difficult for me to look at my phone to follow GPS directions, so he randomly bought me a car phone holder. On my birthday, he made me a card out of the acknowledgement page of the first book we read together, crossed out the authors name, and put my name, and wrote a bunch of sweet, adorable things about me. Because of my adhd, I would constantly forget to chargemy phone/laptop or bring my chargers, and would constantly have no charge on both, so he bought me a pack with 10 of each type of charger, as well as a portable charger. I offhandedly mentioned that I get really carsick, so he bought me dramamine and those carsickness goggles. He bought pads to keep with him just in case I need some, and always carries pepto and advil around because i get headaches a lot and have lots of stomachaches. He helped me move into my dorm, and bought me so many food and supplies even when I insisted that he didnā€™t. Whenever we go out with my friends, he always covers everything. For my friendā€™s birthday, everyone was going to chip in to buy her airpods, but he told them heā€™d cover their part and essentially just bought them for her. He is an insanely hard worker, and I am so proud of him for everything that heā€™s been through, and he is also just the most fun person to be around. I love him so so much, and I know that a lot of the way heā€™s acted is because of his depression, and I know that thatā€™s not really him. I visited him yesterday and we had a really good time, but the entire time I kept being really careful with what I said because I was scared of him becoming upset. Iā€™m scared that this anxiety I feel around him will last forever. I want to wait until he has everything under control, but if he becomes the same way that he was before again, I donā€™t know how much of it I can take. I donā€™t know what to do or where to go from here- can anyone help me?
